COUNTY COUNCIL REAPPOINTS PROSECUTOR J.D. KIM AFTER BIZARRE HEARING Four years ago, when I was investigating various salacious lawsuits filed against the County of Maui, alleging all manner of mismanagement at the county Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, I asked a number of local defense attorneys for context and insight. Unanimously, they said that the lawsuits–which alleged misconduct under the administration of former Prosecutor Benjamin Acob–were symptomatic of the “chaos” under Acob’s reign. But the attorneys also said that Prosecutor’s office had definitely calmed down under John D. Kim, who’s run the office since 2011.

But recently similar accusations began plaguing Kim–unfair treatment of employees, a considerable backlog of cases, high employee turnover. Most distressing to County Councilmembers Mike White and Don Guzman (who is a former deputy prosecuting attorney) seems to be the news that in 2009, then-Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kim was reprimanded by his superiors. White and Guzman referred to the reprimand during a special Maui County Council meeting on Mar. 3. Both council members said they learned of reprimand was discovered in a court document and that Kim has not explained to them what happened (they also admitted that it apparently never came up during Kim’s first appointment, back in 2011).

Kim’s reappointment this year was supposed to be easy–not the often comical circus that finally ended on Mar. 3 with his confirmation. On Feb. 18, the Maui County Council brought up Kim’s reappointment, and were set to rubber-stamp it like they do for nearly every other mayoral appointment. But then a few current and former clerical employees of the Prosecutor’s Office came forward to tell dark tales of “alleged favoritism” and “mismanagement” of Kim, everything went sideways. (Disclosure: Kim’s office is appealing a recent District Court judge’s rul-

ing that threw out the criminal prosecution of MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo, who in 2012 was arrested for photographing police officers during a traffic stop.)

Despite a legion of other Prosecutors testifying that Kim was great, it was enough to derail the nomination by a vote of two to five. Only Councilmembers Gladys Baisa and Mike Victorino voted for Kim, with Councilmembers Bob Carroll, Elle Cochran, Stacy Crivello, Guzman and White voting against him (Don Couch and Riki Hokama were excused).

White even went out of his way to say that things at the Prosecutor’s Office were bad, real bad. “The concerns raised by some employees in the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney about alleged favoritism and mismanagement are serious,” he said in a statement released on Feb. 18. “The council is obligated to take them into account.”

He also cast doubt on the prosecutors who defended Kim: “But it is concerning that what appeared to be dozens of prosecutors and other staff were summoned to the Chamber during the council’s deliberations, with the obvious goal of influencing the county’s policy makers through a show of physical presence.”

During the special meeting on Mar. 3, the County Council took up Kim’s reappointment yet again (throughout the hearing, Kim sat next to the council at the Prosecutor’s table, though he didn’t speak until late in the afternoon). And in a replay of the last hearing, plenty of Kim’s deputies once again showed up to say what a bang-up job he’s doing. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lewis Littlepage testified at length about how wonderful Kim was (he even called the office a “fighting office,” as though it were a combat unit like the Rangers or Marines), but when asked by Cochran about the complaints against Kim from various clerical employees, he had nothing to add except to speculate that maybe they weren’t “doing their jobs.”

And others outside the office defended Kim as well. Wailuku criminal defense attorney David Sereno provided a spirited defense of Kim. “Me, 15 years ago, I would have said kick him out,” he told the council. “But he needs to stay. The problem with chaos is it creates more chaos. What’s jeopardized is fairness–it’s not about winning, it’s about doing the right thing. And that’s what J.D. Kim brought to this job.” Deputy Public Defender Jim Rouse echoed Sereno’s comments.

But three former Prosecutor’s Office employees and one current staffer–all women– stepped forward to testify that their experience working with Kim was profoundly “unfair.”

One of them, Karen Apana, was a former clerk with the Prosecutor’s Office. She testified that she was terminated without cause (she said she got a settlement through mediation after filing a claim against the county).

When Guzman asked Apana about how she was told about employee policies, she said, “After JD came on, it was mostly verbal. And everything changed, depending on who you were.”

Another testifier, a current employee at the Prosecutor’s Office, said she was “advised not to testify” because she still works there. “We have nothing to gain by being here,” she said. “We have a lot to lose being out here. Why did it come to this?”

Testimony during the hearing got very heated and personal. And by 11:30am, the hearing had gotten every bit as chaotic as the accusations against Kim. William Sloper, a criminal defense attorney, said he knows Kim very well. Said Kim attending his wedding, and his wife’s funeral. Then he said he knows Guzman very well–and said Guzman was also at his wedding and his wife’s funeral.

But then Sloper called Guzman’s opposition to Kim was “misguided political retaliation.” According to Sloper, prosecutors had supported Guzman’s opponent in last campaign (former Councilman Joe Pontanilla), and now Guzman was seeking revenge.

At that point, White interrupted Sloper, telling him not to get personal. Victorino seconded that, saying Sloper’s criticism against Guzman was “uncalled for” and threatened to walk out if Sloper continued.

“There’s the door,” Sloper said, to which White responded by immediately calling a quick a quick recess. When they came back a minute later, Sloper stopped bashing Guzman. “There has not been a more fair prosecuting attorney in the last 12 years than Mr. Kim,” Sloper said.

A few minutes later, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Richard Minatoya, who accused Guzman in the election of unlawfully assisting abortive Mayoral candidate (and Guzman aide) Neldon Mamuad, started to testify that Guzman was out of line for going after Kim, but someone on the Council yelled “objection!” and White recessed the hearing again. When they returned a couple minutes later, White warned him to refrain from attacking Guzman personally. Minatoya denied

that he was personally attacking anyone, then proceeded to accuse Guzman of violating the charter by asking Kim to fire him.

“We’re not going to turn this into a circus,” White said. “Some of us have seen what you posted on Facebook and it was rather repulsive.”

“I’m going to object to that,” Minatoya said. “What was repulsive?”

“Recess!” White said.

When they finally returned a few minutes later, Minatoya quickly concluded his statement by calling for Kim’s confirmation.

Guzman then responded to Minatoya, calling allegations that this is all Guzman’s attempt at electoral revenge “absurd.” He then said that Minatoya harassed him at a Don Couch fundraiser (!) and sent him Facebook messages that included images of dead squirrels (!!) and that he would be proceeding with a workplace violence complaint against Minatoya (!!!).

Public testimony ended around 12:30.

After an hour break for lunch, White came back and made a few comments. At first, he said, he thought the nomination would be a “complete slam-dunk” but that “concerns were brought to us… at the very last minute.” Though he said he was heartened by testimony of deputies supporting Kim, he still had a “heightened concern” about Kim. “The [Alan Arakawa] administration probably thought this would be a slamdunk,” White said. “I don’t think they made a strong case for reappointment… [they] didn’t provide us performance reviews or anything of that sort.”

But Couch defended Kim–even on the issue of his past reprimand, saying that even if that happened, Kim’s done a lot of good since then. Baisa agreed, and made a point other councilmembers had already made: every boss has detractors, but Kim seemed to have far more supporters than critics.

Finally around 3:30, Victorino asked if White would call Kim forward to face questioning about the 2009 reprimand.

White rejected this, but allowed Victorino to ask him about the employees who were complaining about his management.

“I can’t get involved in investigations,” Kim said. “If it appears that I’m standoffish, it’s only because I’m following labor law.

I’ve always been open and listened to those concerns. That’s how I run the department.”

When Couch then asked Kim if he’d promise not to retaliate against those employees who’ve complained against him, he said his office has a no-retaliation policy.

“You don’t know you’re doing a good job unless you get complaints,” Kim added.

In the end, the council voted 7-2 to approve Kim for another term (Guzman and Cochran voted no). Nearly every council member also expressed support for both auditing the Prosecutor’s Office and being more diligent when faced with confirming appointees. Whale Trust Maui’s celebration of its mammalian friends, Whale Tales 2015, wrapped up on Feb. 16 with 75 whale watchers aboard the Maui Princess, the flagship of the Hawaii Ocean Project fleet. Noted speaker and marine mammal photographer Flip Nicklin hosted the whale watch.

Nicklin is part of the Whale Trust organization, headed by Dr. Meagan Jones-Gray and Dr. Jim Darling. Whale Trust is one of the recipients of research money raised by Hawaii Ocean Project which is the conservation division of the Lahaina Cruise Company. The funds raised and donations collected by the project go to their “100% Research Direct” program to support respected, genuine researchers.

Other direct research recipients of the Hawaii Ocean Project this year include Dr. Joe Mobley of the University of Hawaii at Manoa; Jill Mickelsen of the Hawaii Whale Research Foundation; Mark and Debbie Ferrari of The Center for Whale Studies and Dr. Robin W. Baird of the Cascadia Research Collective.

“We have an immediate need for our community to support legitimate and peer reviewed research on Hawaii’s whales, dolphins, and marine ecosystem,” said Hawaii Ocean Project Captain Dave H. Jung.

The six-screen movie theater at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center in Kahului has completed a $1 million improvement to enhance movie-goers’ experiences. The improvements, which took a year to complete, include new, over-sized seating that features more than 21 inches of seat width and built-in drink holders.

Additional theater upgrades include new carpet, wall drapes and better lighting in the aisles.

The improvements come on the heels of the theater’s all-digital projection and sound equipment upgrade in 2014. In addition to all these

MAUI BUS MAKES CHANGES Starting Saturday, Feb. 28, the County of Maui made some changes to the Maui Bus Upcountry Islander and Kula Villager routes, according to a Feb. 25 County of Maui news release: • The bus connection between the Upcountry Islander and the Kula Villager will be relocated to the Kulamalu Town Center, near Longs Drug Store.

• Kulamalu Town Center has been added to the Upcountry Islander route.

• Both the Upcountry Islander and Kula Villager will continue to service the Pukalani Street bus stop separately.

• The Kula Villager bus schedule will be moved to 17 minutes after the hour with the first bus now starting service at 7:17am from Pukalani Street.

NEW SNORKEL STORE OPENS IN KIHEI The Snorkel Store has opened a new, third location in Kihei. Co-owners Kevin Lewis, Micah Wolf and Daniel Sykes created The Snorkel Store to provide an alternative to the high resort prices, and gimmicky timeshare techniques in the Maui market. In 2012, the local friends opened their first store in the Lahaina Square Shopping Center. Then one year later, they opened a much larger store in Ka‘anapali. The addition of a new Southside store now provides island wide convenience to The Snorkel Store customers.

“To visitors, the new Kihei location brings convenience by giving customers a new place to pick-up and drop-off their snorkel and beach rentals,” Lewis said.

Customers can now rent or buy snorkel equipment at a location that is within 10 minutes of most places on the island.

The Snorkel Store is celebrating its new grand opening by offering a two-for-one discount on premium snorkel rentals, in addition to a $20 credit toward rentals and activities, through the end of the month.

The Utah Court of Appeals ruled in February that Barbara Bagley has a legal right to sue herself for her own negligent driving that caused the death of her husband. Typically, in U.S. courts, a party cannot profit from its own negligence, but Bagley is the official “representative” administering her husband’s estate and has a duty to claim debts owed to the husband.

Those debts would include “wrongful death” damages from a careless driver (actually, the careless driver’s insurance company), even if the careless driver was herself. Of course, if her lawsuit is successful, the monetary award would become part of the husband’s estate, a portion of which will likely go to her.

For a brief period in 1951 and 1952, an educational kit, the Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab, was for sale in the United States even though it came with testable samples of four types of uranium ore and three different radiation sources (alpha, beta, gamma). A surviving copy of the kit has been on display recently at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but the radioactive materials had to be removed before the kit could be shipped to Belfast. (The kit had failed to sell well; kids apparently preferred the company’s erector sets.)

In February, the Kansas Humanities Council, providing background to a current, traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibit, posted a description of a 1925 baseball game in Wichita in which the professional, all-black Wichita Monrovians took on members of the local Ku Klux Klan. Historians guessed that the KKK risked the embarrassment of defeat only because it needed the exposure to overcome declining enrollments. The Monrovians (champions of the Colored Western League the year before) won, 10-8, and the Klan shut down in Kansas two years later.

WAR IS ALL HELL ISIS’ very public recent executions of a Jordanian pilot and two Japanese citizens were met with starkly different reactions. In Jordan, King Abdullah II led his nation in a call for bloody revenge. In Japan (according to a February Associated Press dispatch from Tokyo), feelings were mixed because of “meiwaku”–Japan’s cultural feeling that the dead victims (and their families) were “causing trouble” by placing themselves in harm’s way. Said one man cited by the AP, “In the old days, their parents would have had to commit hara-kiri to apologize.” In fact, both victims’ families did repeatedly apologize for inconveniencing the government, which had warned citizens to stay away from the war zone.

At a February meeting in Geneva of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament, regarding whether meetings should be open to the general public, the representative from Belarus expressed alarm because of potential problems for the security staff. “What if,” he asked (according to a Reuters report), “there were topless ladies screaming from the public gallery throwing bottles of mayonnaise?” According to the official summary, the Mexican delegate apparently earnestly pointed out that some U.N. meetings were already open to the public, but as yet there had been no mayonnaise-droppings.

CSI: NETHERLANDS INTELLIGENT DESIGN A 37-year-old Lancashire, England, businessman (identified in later news reports as Duane Walters), fearing surgery for suspected bladder cancer, was discovered to be cancer-free, but on the other hand, he was found to have a uterus, ovaries and cervix–even though he has fully functioning exterior male genitalia. He was referred to Manchester University Hospital for a hysterectomy (to prevent the possibility of pregnancy)– and was counseled that he might eventually become menopausal. His condition, “persistent Mullerian duct syndrome,” is rare enough when diagnosed at birth but, according to experts cited by the Daily Telegraph, virtually unheard-of at age 37. Walters said he will continue living as a man.

PUMAS, COYOTES AND WAVE GLIDERS How scientists in Hawaii and around the world are using remotely operated vehicles for research

T

he machines are definitely rising. The drones, it sometimes seems, are all around us.

Commercial, military, scientific–it makes no difference. Stories of alleged terrorists killed in the Middle East by American missiles launched from remotely piloted American aircraft have been commonplace for years. Go to any beach on the island and you’re likely to see a small quad-rotor drone buzzing above surfers and even just people relaxing on the sand.

shooter Sean M. Hower–are starting to use drones. Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar has started to use drones to monitor its 37,000 acres of cane on Maui. In Los Angeles, a Singaporean marketing company recently deployed a drone that tracked people carrying cell phones, then zeroed in on their location so they could receive mobile phone advertisements. While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to debate how it should regulate the flying of small drone aircraft by the general public, law enforcement agencies are increasingly looking

to robots for surveillance (the Maui Police Department recently took possession of a tracked drone that can climb stairs, open doors and even hold and fire a gun).

And now we have drones that can watch whales. But it’s not activity companies that are operating these drones–it’s the federal government. Specifically, it’s the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that’s working with these latest drones.

“From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration

and supporting marine commerce, NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product,” states the NOAA website. “NOAA’s dedicated scientists use cutting-edge research and hightech instrumentation to provide citizens, planners, emergency managers and other decision makers with reliable information they need when they need it.”

That’s right: the part of the federal government that deals with the weather is now playing around with robots. And they’ve

So why the sudden fascination with devices that most of the public see as either expensive toys or weapons of assassination?

“They allow us to monitor without man-made disturbances and at a lower cost,” said Pickett. “They’ve let us see sea otters in playful behavior that we’ve never been able to see before. They allow us to go places we can’t get to safely–remote, rugged, dangerous areas.”

Amazingly enough, modern drones even allow NOAA researchers to follow birds in flight. Recent experiments outlined in Feb. 3, 2015 American Association for the Advancement of Science blog post showed that only dropping down on the birds from a 90 degree angle really spooked birds (in fact, look up the words “birds attack drones” on-

been testing them right here, in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary–1,400 square miles of protected ocean around our islands.

In early February, NOAA researchers began testing two drones (though the operators loathe that term) in the sanctuary waters. Both are very different than the cute little quadcopters that make up the bulk of commercial sales. The first is a video camera-equipped aircraft called the Puma.

“The Puma is a 13-pound, battery-powered aircraft with a nine-foot wingspan, equipped with real-time video and photo capability,” states a Feb. 25 NOAA news release. “The aircraft can be hand-launched and recovered from any location on land or at sea from a boat. Durable and rugged for deployment to remote marine areas and repeat usage, the aircraft can fly for up to two hours on a single charge and cover a range of about 50 square miles.”

The second NOAA robot tested out here is even more unusual–it stays in the water.

“The Liquid Robotics Wave Glider has a propulsion system that uses both wavepowered and stored solar energy to navigate challenging ocean environments,” states the NOAA press release. “Its innovative design allows it to cost-effectively collect and transmit data gathered during missions of [sic] lasting up to a year, over thousands of miles, or while remaining in place. Individual or small group glider deployments carry suites of sensors and operate individually or in fleets.”

Matt Pickett, NOAA’s aviation operations director for the national marine sanctuaries, told me that the agency has been using unmanned aerial vehicles (“we don’t like to use the term ‘drones’”) for a few years now. And they’ve been used in a lot of places, for a lot of different purposes:

ago a whale got entangled, and they could have been a big help. That’s one of our long-term goals.”

Pickett also said that though commercially sold drones can usually be flown out of the box (though the FAA may someday require pilot licenses for certain drones), training operators in how to use UAVs like the Wave Glider and Puma isn’t easy.

“We just went through a two-week military course that was pretty intense,” Pickett said. “It was challenging, with a lot of technical training for the mapping system and communications system.”

The mischief in me asked Pickett–a government researcher–if using the Puma and Wave Glider was fun. “It’s always fun to be on the water,” he said before quickly returning to government speak. “But I’d say they’re challenging– it’s always challenging to get all these pieces together in an operation.”

As for when these things will be fully operational, Pickett said that hasn’t yet been determined. “We’re testing them in sanctuaries all over the country, and we’re not really ready to deploy them,” he said.

That’s probably for the best, because the FAA is still nowhere near ready to issue flight rules governing drones.

Though the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that those surveyed were concerned about the use of drones in surveillance, most had no problem with law enforcement flying them. “Sixty-eight percent of respondents support police flying drones to solve crimes, and 62 percent support using them to deter crime,” stated the story.

The FAA is still months away from issuing a directive on drones, and public comment could take another year or more.

That’s why I wasn’t surprised at Pickett’s answer when I asked him if the recent drone tests in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary showed any shortcomings.

“Technically, there were no shortcomings,” he said. “But in terms of regulations, the FAA is very restrictive, for good reason. The technology is ahead of the regulatory environment. That’s one of the challenges.” ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news, visit: mauitime.com/news

Grow Some Good's Doing Great With School Gardens And the Hawaii state Legislature is finally taking notice

Baldwin High School’s Workforce Readiness Program has taken to the garden to teach entrepreneurial skills from planting to harvest. And Princess Nahienaena is the newest school to jump aboard Grow Some Good’s budding list.

Success stories like these are making state legislators take notice. Senate Bill 376 seeks to create a farm school program at the state level as well as a link between school gardens, school food and Department of Agriculture. It passed the Ways and Means committee last month.

Education is about making the relevant connections to knowledge that will last into your future. That isn’t always obvious in classroom sessions, but taking lessons outdoors to a school garden can be refreshing and inspiring. There, students can learn where their food comes from.

Eventually, the gardens will expand and students can take their knowledge home and create garden exchanges in their neighborhoods. From there, they learn how to market and sell their projects and (hopefully) the importance of rein-

aui was behind the times when it came to school gardens. In fact, when Grow Some Good started their nonprofit to help local schools build out fertile grounds on campus, it was a hard sell at first.

Administrators just weren’t sure of their value.

Now, with a few years under their belts, the program is flourishing. Sure, there’s a long list of schools that tap into their plant nurturing organization, but Grow Some Good has also exponentially affected our local food-growing systems and access to vegetables by teaching kids how to grow food.

our company has grown, it’s gone from small brew pub to self-distributing small packaging brew pub, regional craft brewery and now we are with Maui Stone Craft Beverages as one division of what we do. And a main brewery here, a second restaurant and now we’re adding spirits. I’m referring to us more and more as a craft beverage company, because of what we’re doing.”

The tasting room has 30 taps, and while there’s always beer on rotation, you can count on them to have more than you can taste and drink in one sitting. It’s a one stop shop for beer education: Crystal 808, Milk of Magnesia, Blood Orange IPA and Vienna are just a few I’ve tasted. aui Brewing Company’s new Kihei facility is up and running. It’s not just a beer production facility anymore, and their tasting room has an amazing range of taps for you to taste. And if you want a backstage pass to the beer, it’s best to take the tour.

“We run this a little different than most breweries,” owner and founder Garrett Marrero told me during a recent tour. “This is two brew houses as opposed to just having one. There is a 50-barrel on one side and a 25 here. So with the 25, we can do smaller runs.

We’ll do four runs to the 100 barrel tanks like we did in Lahaina, only we can do it much more efficiently here.”

Then Marrero headed over to a digital screen that shows what’s happening inside any of the tanks. From there he can measure sugar extraction, gravity, weight and so much more that I don’t quite understand enough to explain.

Then he showed off a tasting station with a little tap, and a lab where strains of yeast are created and stored and every batch of beer is run through a stat test. Then there’s the canning line, grain storage, spent grain and solar power headquarters. There’s a lot of ground to cover back there.

“We are becoming a real craft beverage company, more than just a brewery,” says Marrero. “If you look at the way

“This is everything we always promised to do,” says Marerro. “Authentic local production. We scaled it up, we put our money where our mouth is.

We are always a craft brewery at heart but to add those other products is taking steps in a process that we already do, and we are already built for it. They are just extensions of what we already do. Think about it this way: whiskey is just the IPA–without hops–that’s been distilled.”

The Grifter Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ is better than ‘After Earth’ but worse than every other con movie ever made ★★★★★ Rated R / 105 Min.

H

e’s a seasoned con man who goes by the nickname “Mellow” (played by Will Smith) and she’s an attractive but inexperienced watch snatcher, named Jess (Margot Robbie), with an approach both clumsy and in need of schooling. The first time they see each other, he recognizes the potential, the skill and the danger she possesses. He takes her in, showing her a little at a time, how to use her presence and a silent touch to get whatever she wants, from anyone.

Coming from the writer/director duo of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (who made the sensational I Love You Phillip Morris and the above average romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love), I expected something much stronger than this. The beautiful cinematography and sex appeal of the two leads can’t con us on such a dull movie.

Having Smith, one of the most charismatic actors of his generation, play a character nicknamed “Mellow” wasn’t the greatest idea. Smith’s performance is fine

but he appears tired and reigned in. Robbie is much better, giving a striking turn that doesn’t merely showcase her radiance but displays intelligence and depth in her acting.

The colors practically pop off the screen, with every set and location filmed in a way to utilize the rich, gorgeous palette available. I mean this as a compliment: this looks like a Tony Scott film, in that its slick but there is such a striking quality to the imagery.

Otherwise, the story is nothing new and doesn’t offer surprises that are worth the wait. The thrill of con artist movies is to see just how far the filmmakers can go in giving their audience a sleight of hand.

Here, I walked away feeling scammed, not tricked. It all builds to an ending somehow both unconventional and unexceptional.

If you’re a fan of Smith’s, as I certainly am, he’s been better. Ever since his dramatic breakout in Six Degrees of Separation, and his terrific performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has proven to be a major movie star, capable of extraordinary performances. While thankfully not a dud like his recent After Earth, Seven Pounds or MIB 3, he’s still in

need of a comeback vehicle worthy of his talent. This is more a showcase for Robbie, though she was just as dynamic and memorable in The Wolf of Wall Street.

I find it odd and more than a little sad that it's 2015 and the filmmakers seem uncomfortable with the interracial relationship taking place between the two protagonists. This is nothing new (good luck thinking of any movie where Denzel kisses a white woman or Brad Pitt smooches a non-Caucasian). Still, I was annoyed at how the film clearly presents a powerful attraction between Smith and Robbie and seemingly can’t cut away fast enough from them kissing or spending time together in bed. So far this season, I’ve had to endure the whips and chains freak show of Fifty Shades of Grey, but will not be permitted to see Will Smith and Margot Robbie make

love. When it comes to sensuality in mainstream American films, we’re less progressive than we think.

The best scene comes before the midpoint, where we see Mellow’s weakness with gambling exploited by a wily businessman (played by the wonderful, seldom seen B.D. Wong). The mounting tension in this sequence and the manner in which the actors create the heightened excitement and dread in the moment, is exhilarating. It’s the film at its best and most alive.

If you’ve never seen The Sting, Matchstick Men, The Grifters, Catch Me If You Can, The Color of Money, Paper Moon, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or The Spanish Prisoner, you’re better off giving one of those perfect movies a look and avoiding this one altogether. ■

The Dunes at Maui Lani provide the backdrop for a day of fun on the greens, honoring MACC visionary and founder, Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi, who loved the arts and golf. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 7 am and ends with an awards luncheon at Cafe O’ Lei in The Dunes Clubhouse. Four par-3 holes are eligible for closest-to-the-pin and hole-in-one contests.

EVENTS THURSDAY, MAR 5 PAWS FOR READING - Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, a nonprofit organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially-trained dogs to assist them in living more independent lives, will present the program, which is said to improve children’s reading and communication skills. Reading to a Therapy Dog can help build a keiki’s reading confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and is a lot of fun. Parents should contact the Library to sign up their children for 15-minute reading sessions.
