MAUI NEWS REPORTS FORMER MPD COP IS PUKALANI FLASHER

“As a board, we were grateful for the opportunity to talk to staff, physicians, and our friends and neighbors about what kind of healthcare model we want moving forward,” said Avery Chumbley, chairperson of the Maui Regional System Board, in a Sept. 23 news release. “Kaiser Permanente provided us with its vision and strategy for improved healthcare in the Maui Region.

We felt Kaiser Permanente could best serve the needs of our community.”

The stakes for this deal are very high. As Chumbley’s news release pointed out, the Maui Region of HHSC serves more than 11,000 inpatients and more than 45,000 emergency room patients per year. It also employs more than 1,500 people. In fact, Maui Memorial is this island’s only fullservice, acute medical care facility. It’s also the only neighbor island hospital that provides complete cardiac services, including open-heart surgery and angioplasty.

But at least one public official–and a fairly powerful one, at that–isn’t happy with Kaiser.

“The recent selection of Kaiser Permanente to operate and manage the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Maui Regional System facilities raises many questions and causes me to be concerned, not only with the process for the selection, but also the actions to be taken going forward in negotiating an agreement,” said Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui in a statement also sent out yesterday afternoon.

In fact, Tsutsui would rather the Maui hospitals partner up with a different company entirely–Hawaii Pacific Health. “From all accounts, Hawaii Pacific Health had been

Man, police work is hard. Especially here on Maui. And nothing better illustrates this than the case of John Salomon, ex-Maui Police Officer.

According to the Sept. 23 Maui News, Salomon is officially being charged with nine counts of allegedly exposing himself in Pukalani back on May 30. Nine counts– one of which involves Salomon allegedly exposing his genitals to a minor.

“Beginning shortly before 1 p.m. that day, police reported receiving ‘numerous calls regarding a male exposing his genitals and masturbating in a vehicle’ at the parking lots of Pukalani Terrace Center and Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center across the street,” The Maui News reported. “The suspect was driving a green Toyota 4Runner, police said.”

At the time, the identity of the perp remained unknown–or rather, unsaid. On June 3, Hawaii News Now reported that “multiple sources” told them that the Pukalani Flasher was a cop. “Multiple sources tell Hawaii News Now the man accused of exposing himself on Maui over the weekend is a Maui County police officer,” Hawaii News Now reported. “Police confirm five separate sexual assault in the fourth degree cases were initiated, but witnesses are upset because they say nothing has been done.”

And nothing was done. But about a week after that Hawaii News Now story came out, the Maui PD announced that they’d just arrested one of their own–John Salomon–for alleged drunk driving. Speculation flew around social media that Salomon was also the Pukalani Flasher, but the MPD kept its mouth shut. It was the same when Salomon got himself arrested again on June 27, this time for allegedly being drunk in public in Newport Beach, California.

The Pukalani Flasher case just kinda went away. Until today–more than three months after it allegedly happened–we finally find out that the MPD is alleging that Salomon is, in fact, the Pukalani Flasher.

Oh, and The Maui News also reported the

MPD fired him. Salomon will be arraigned on Oct. 1, according to The Maui News.

On Sept. 23, after we posted the above on Mauitime.com, a county official emailed me to say I had Salomon all wrong. That Salomon was a decent cop who developed PTSD after responding to that bad 2014 plane crash on Lanai that killed three, including two county Planning Department employees. “He needs help and should go to some sort of mental health facility, not jail.”

Well, yes and no. Yes, it’s true that if Salomon is guilty, then he clearly needs therapy for his alleged actions. But at same time, lots of cops, paramedics and firefighters (and soldiers) face all sorts of trauma during their jobs, and they don’t even contemplate doing what Salomon is accused of.

It’s also true that for the last three years, Salomon has been a willing, paid participant in a criminal justice system that throws many, many non-police officers accused of doing exactly what he did (or less) into prison for a long time.

We know Maui County is something like a small town, but that’s hardly an excuse to abandon the principle that those in society given a badge and gun and authorized to use deadly force to enforce our laws ought to be held to a higher standard.

Like we said: police work is very hard.

MAUI HOSPITAL BOARD WANTS KAISER So on Sept. 23, the board that runs Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lanai Community Hospital decided that it wants to partner with Kaiser Permanente. For much of the last year, local hospital and public officials have been talking up the financial doomsday these hospitals were facing. Either give us more money, these officials told the state Legislature, or let us find a private partner. Giving Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC, the quasi-public company that runs our hospitals) more money was dead on arrival, so in June, Governor David Ige–after contentious negotiations–signed Act 103, which made a private partnership possible.

Future home of Maui Kaiser Hospital?

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa wasted no time in applauding the board’s choice.

“The Maui Regional System Board has made its selection and I am confident that it was in the best interests of everyone in Maui County,” said Arakawa in a statement his office released yesterday afternoon.

“Their main goal is to get our primary medical care facility on stable financial footing so that Maui Memorial may better

working with stakeholders for months and expressed interest in ensuring that the needs of the Maui Regional System and the community it serves would be met,” Tsutsui said. “Kaiser Permanente, however, only more recently expressed interest in servicing the community.

It remains to be seen whether Kaiser possesses the same level of commitment to the wellbeing of the residents of Maui County.”

The Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA), which represents about 850 people at Maui’s hospitals and has opposed allowing the hospitals to get private partners from the get-go, is predictably skeptical about the Kaiser choice.

“Now that a private operator is selected, HGEA will continue to advocate for our more than 800 members in the HHSC Maui Region during this time of great uncertainty,” said HGEA Executive Director Randy Perreira. “As is our responsibility, we will remain a strong watchdog to ensure employees are being treated fairly and that contract terms are being upheld.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

LC FINALLY SCHEDULES DANCING RULE HEARING So this Thursday, Oct. 1 is the ostensible deadline for the County of Maui to get its act together in regards to Act 136, the new state law that requires county Liquor Commissions to define dancing (since they’re so insistent on enforcing dancing restrictions).

“No later than October 1, 2015, each county liquor commission that regulates dancing shall adopt or amend rules regarding dancing in premises licensed to sell liquor for consumption thereon,” states the text Act 136. “The rules of each county liquor commission that regulate dancing shall

SENATOR SCHATZ WEIGHS IN ON US-CHINA CLIMATE DEAL On Sept. 25, the U.S. and China have agreed to an historic cap-and-trade deal on carbon emissions. It’s yet another foreign policy victory for President Barack Obama, and U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, wasted no time patting him on the back with this statement his office sent out today: “The momentum is palpable,” Schatz said the day Obama and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping sealed the deal. “People, governments, companies, and institutions are beginning to take the kinds of actions that give us a legitimate chance to solve this problem. I’ve never been so hopeful on this issue. We’ve got a long way to go, but this was enormously important.

“This agreement marks a historic step towards protecting our planet from the impacts of climate change. What our two countries are saying with this agreement is that climate change is real, caused by humans, and is solvable.

“For years, naysayers and deniers said that the U.S. shouldn’t move forward to regulate carbon pollution until and unless China took action. As of today, that argument is no longer valid.

“This agreement gives momentum to the ongoing international climate negotiations and will inspire other countries to commit to action prior to the Paris talks.

“While this agreement is an incredibly

important foundation and gives people around the world hope, we must not let up. We have to work towards full implementation of the Clean Power Plan, a successful Paris conference, and the eventual passage of carbon fee legislation.”

In case you’re wondering what “cap and trade” actually means, here’s a little primer from the Sept. 24 New York Times: “Under a cap-and-trade system, a concept created by American economists, governments place a cap on the amount of carbon pollution that may be emitted annually,” stated the paper. “Companies can then buy and sell permits to pollute. Western economists have long backed the idea as a market-driven way to push industry to cleaner forms of energy, by making polluting energy more expensive.”

Here’s the thing, though: just because something was “created by American economists” and is “market-driven,” that doesn’t mean Republicans will support it. They may have championed it many years ago–as late as 2008, it was officially part of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s platform–but these days, with Obama advocating it, they downright hate it.

“If cap and trade were imposed on America it would devastate economic growth, it would get rid of jobs, it would be permanently debilitating,” U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, R–Florida, said in 2010, according

Three state senators (including Maui’s own J. Kalani English) introduced the original bill (SB 868) as a result of lobbying and agitating from the group Maui Dance Advocates, which spent many unsuccessful years trying to convince the Maui County Liquor Commission that if they were going to regulate where clubs and restaurants could have dancing, then they could at least define the word “dancing” in the statutes.

But (or, of course, depending on your view of the LC), the Commission’s Sept. 9 meeting came and went with no decision on Act 136 compliance, which means they’ll take it up at their next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7–six days after the state deadline.

“Are we Footloose for six days?” Maui Dance Advocates member Jiva Jive (fka Anthony Simmons) emailed me on Sept. 24. “I have no idea what they are going to decide.”

In the mean time, he'll be holding a “Freedom Dance” on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Makawao Union Church from 7:30pm to 11pm.

In September, Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery concluded that records of an investigation need not be released to the Memphis City Council–because there was no comma. The law requires the records’ release “only in compliance with a subpoena or an order of a court.” Slatery said if there had been a comma after “subpoena,” a council subpoena would get the records, but without the comma, only court subpoenas. And in July, Andrea Cammelleri prevailed on her parking ticket challenge because there was no comma. A West Jefferson, Ohio, ordinance banned parking of any “motor vehicle camper, trailer.” A state appeals judge ruled that, with a comma after “vehicle,” Cammelleri’s truck would have been banned, but without it, only campers and trailers were.

GREAT MOMENTS IN GERRYMANDERING In April, the City Council of Columbia, Missouri, rigged a specially drawn “Community Improvement District” to pass a sales tax increase. Under the law, if the District had no “residents” to vote, the “election” would be decided by the tax-friendly business owners.

However, the Council somehow missed that college student Jen Henderson, 23, actually lived there and had registered to vote, meaning the business owners could not vote and that the tax increase would be decided by... Henderson. (In late August, the Council “postponed” the election and at press time were in a quandary, as Henderson said she’s against higher taxes.)

THE CONTINUING CRISIS A teenage girl in Wyandotte, Michigan, using $9.95 tools from a website called FakeABaby.com, pretended for months to be pregnant (with abdomen extenders and ultrasound photos of her “triplets”). She received gifts, had a baby shower, joined expectant mother groups and even frightened her 16-year-old boyfriend enough that he began looking for full-time work to feed the soon-due “babies.” However (obviously), the ruse fell apart in the 10th month (in August), drawing community outrage, but according to the sheriff, none of the “victims” who were fooled have come forward to press fraud charges.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY While “Deep South” states’ courts are notorious for death sentences, the “epicenter” of capital punishment in recent years has shifted to Southern California, according to a September Slate.com analysis. While neither Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, nor Virginia has issued a death sentence this year, Riverside County, California, has recorded seven, and since 2010, Riverside and Los Angeles County have led the nation in death-row assignments. (Ironically, of course, California rarely actually executes anyone; its death row has 748 residents, and no one has walked the last mile since 2006.)

BRIGHT IDEAS The Cambridge, Massachusetts, company AOBiome believes we have dangerously stripped “good bacteria” from our skins via “excessive cleaning” and has introduced for sale “Mother Dirt” spray to add it back. Chemical engineer and co-founder Dave Whitlock told WBZ-TV in September that he personally has “not taken a shower in over 12 years,” but instead uses his odorless bacteria-restoring mist twice a day to cover himself with helpful “dirt” that activates the “good” bacteria. The company will soon begin clinical trials to demonstrate whether Mother Dirt (which also comes in shampoo form) can additionally improve certain skin conditions.

FINE POINTS OF THE LAW Cormega Copening, 17, and his girlfriend Brianna Denson, 16, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, are old enough to have sex (“adults,” according to state law) but apparently too young to exchange nude photos. Copening was charged with five counts of “sexual exploitation”–for receiving “sexts” from Denson and having nude photos of himself on his phone (i.e., “exploiting” himself). Denson accepted a lesser sentence and is serving a tedious, restrictive probation; she had also been charged with self-exploiting. After much criticism for threatening felony charges and sex-offender registration, prosecutors offered Copening a similar tedious, restrictive probation in September.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES According to a divorce petition filed by Carole Mundy (and reported in the New York Post in August), her estranged husband Jeffrey Stein (a “top administrator” for New York’s Nassau County District Attorney) drove her to post-traumatic stress disorder with his “lifestyle.” According to the petition, Stein sometimes wore a chastity belt to work and, during sex, wore diapers and “a horse tail” (with an anal plug) and “gallop[ed]” around their home, used a litter box, had his wife “walk” him on a leash, dressed like a “sissy maid” named “Jessica,” and wanted to be fed and diapered like a baby. Said Mundy’s lawyer, it was “a bedroom nightmare.” ■

DUKE KAHANAMOKU

T

here are few visitors to Oahu who haven’t seen the bronze statue of Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku at Kuhio Beach.

It’s a major landmark, and even serves as a stop for the myriad trolleys and shuttles that roll in and out of Waikiki. His arms are outstretched, as though welcoming everyone to Hawaii.

But even for many people who live here, it’s hard to separate the real Kahanamoku– Olympic swimmer, famous surfer, Honolulu Sheriff, world-renowned “Ambassador of Aloha”–from his likeness on Kalakaua Avenue. Unlike, say, Eddie Aikau, Duke seems remote, a product of an era long

gone. This is hardly surprising–born in the last years of the Hawaiian kingdom, Kahanamoku died at the end of Hawaii’s first decade as a state.

Part of the reason for this is a near-complete lack of authoritative, modern scholarship on Kahanamoku’s life and legacy. But now there’s a new book out that seeks to strip away the mythology and folklore surrounding Kahanamoku and reveal the real man beneath. It’s called Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku, and its author is David Davis, who’s also written tomes on Los Angeles sports photography, the 1908 Olympics and Merry Lepper, the first woman to run a marathon.

Waterman’s official release date is Oct. 1, and last week I spoke to Davis by phone to find why he decided to write about one of Hawaii’s most famous personalities, and what challenges he faced. write about Duke Q: Why Kahanamoku? impetus really came from reA: The search I was doing on my previous book–Showdown at Shepherd’s Bush–on the 1908 Olympics. It was on three marathon runners, but there was a little bit of overlap with the 1912 Olympics. So I did some research on the 1912 Olympics, and founds lots of information on Jim Thorpe.

But I also found that though not the star, but certainly the number two or number three star, was Duke Kahanamoku. you started reading up on Q: SoKahanamoku…

Honestly, I didn’t see a great, comprehensive biography of Duke. Frankly, A: what I saw was a lot of hagiography–some had good research, but they weren’t serious works. This was three years ago.

But this was a great story. I’m a journalist, so I go where the stories are. I thought I’d give it a shot. I was lucky to sell a book in this market.

places. But I looked high and low, and I couldn’t find him saying anything about that.

People witnessed it, but they were the ones telling the story, not Duke.

Now one of the things I like to think I drew out was his role as a race pioneer in sports.

This was before Joe Louis, before Jesse Owens. He faced racism, but he was able to integrate. At the time, certain Southern California beaches were reserved for whites only.

But Duke surfed everywhere; he didn’t let that stop him.

The Outrigger Canoe Club also snubbed him–it was written about at the time, because he was the greatest athlete in the islands. But eventually he became a member, and it became his home away from home.

Did you delve into Hawaiian language sources?

But his surfing, not so much. Certainly in the beginning, he’s more associated with swimming–his fame comes from the Olympics. But by the ‘60s, he’s known for surfing. Part of this has to do with a promoter he has working for him. He forms the Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team.

He was in his 70s, but was still part of the scene. It adopted him, and proclaimed him the father of surfing, and he stepped into it.

I wasn’t out to slam somebody, I just wanted to tell a good story. But there was an effort to keep all that off-limits.

We’re at an age where it’s okay for our heroes to have setbacks. Not everyone is perfect. I’ll give you an example: Duke is known as an ambassador of aloha. I think that term has been bandied about, and it conjures up an image of big smiles and everything being hunkydory. He did talk about this–welcoming the world, aloha, may have gone too far. Well, the world came, and sort of trashed Waikiki. It built it up in many ways I don’t think he saw as paradise.

it, I want one more draft… But there was a competitor that Duke raced against. Recently I heard his papers are in Chicago. Oh no! I also didn’t get to Switzerland, another great repository of Olympic material.

do you sum up Kahanamoku’s Q: How legacy? multi-layered. He was the A: It’s father of modern surfing, and in a sense, surf culture and the lifestyle.

You can also extrapolate skateboarding and snowboarding. I think he’s the godfather of those.

He’s also a pioneer of race in sports.

He’s alongside Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson. He’s in that realm.

And to bring it back to Hawaii, I don’t think there’s another athlete who’s so intrinsically tied to place than Duke. You could say Derek Jeter, but he didn’t grow up in New York and lives in Florida now. But Duke’s life–he was born in 1890, died in 1968–encompasses what Hawaii went through. I don’t know of any other athlete who competed in that respect.

I may sound naive, but I didn’t realize how big he was in Hawaii.

There’s a quote from an old sportswriter named Bob Considine. When he went to Hawaii in the ‘30s or the ‘40s, he wrote, “Duke is Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined.” That’s pretty accurate. This was another challenge–all the mythic status that surrounds him to this day.

But I also think that Duke is totally underrated in terms of sports icons in American history. He helped make swimming a popular sport at the Olympics–you can attribute that to Duke. He was also a kind of Johnny Appleseed of surfing. And you don’t have skateboard-

on him. Towards the end of his life, there were books by Joe Brennan. But Joe was a friend.

Sandy Hall is a Duke historian and was good friends with his widow. She’s been working on a book for a decade.

I think people did want to, but they were friends. I think that was part of it. But I don’t know the answer to it. Maybe Nebraska Press, when I started, saw this as a great story that needs to be told. I want to pay respect to Duke, but also examine him as a human being and athlete as best as I can.

that I wasn’t able to access.

I hope this will be the first one, and there will be other books. Look at Jim Thorpe–there are three, four, five books about him. I don’t think the story’s done–I’m sure there’s lots of stuff I didn’t get to.

I did lots of research at the Bishop Museum and the archives in Honolulu. I also tried to reach out to relatives and friends of Duke who are still alive. That was met with mixed results. Some didn’t want to speak for whatever reason. Some were of advanced age. But I did as much as I could do.

I tracked down any interview he did. He even did one in Upstate New York. I went to Duke University to look at [his friend and possible lover] Doris Duke’s papers.

topping by Pau Hana Kava Cafe in Wailuku is like taking in a breath of fresh air. The outdoor courtyard cafe is sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the Wailuku business district. Once you step in, you’re quickly decompressed by the shaded couches, groovy music and tasty raw food, green juices and kava drinks. It’s a completely new dimension in town to discover.

“I lived on the Big Island,” says owner Sara Tovie. “That is where I learned about kava.

I was living in New York managing a street team for a hip hop magazine. I was the token white girl and it didn’t work out. I almost made it a year in New York. I ran away to live on the Big Island. There was a kava bar down the road that we would go to at night.”

Tovie has been into kava ever since that time on Hawaii Island, when she lived near Kalapana. When she moved to Maui, she couldn’t find a place to hang out, drink kava and eat healthy bites. So she enlisted her friend Shannon Strazdas and created the Pau Hana Kava Cafe.

Kava comes from the root of the kava plant. You will also hear it referred to as ‘awa, and kava-kava. It’s made into a tea that you drink, and it has relaxing properties (as well as a bitter taste). Tovie dresses her kava up with coconut water and blasts of stevia chocolate or vanilla, giving it a pleasant flavor.

You drink it right out of an authentic husked coconut shell cup. You can get cups of traditional for $4, or dressed up versions for $7.

They also have Maca and chai flavors. I like how they balance the coconut cup on top of a mason jar, so you can put the cup down.

“Kava is such an amazing medicine,” she says. “It blows my mind how there are so many young single people on this sleepy island, which is wonderful because it promotes water sports and a healthy, lifestyle.

But at the same time, the only social activities at night involve alcohol. So for me, there

aren’t enough options. This is really about creating an outdoor space, cool music and tiki torches, bringing the kava and kombucha and have this be a meeting place for everyone. An alternative to the bar scene.”

I came down at lunch time and tried some of the Si Raw offerings on the menu. They have nachos–blue corn chips that come with three different dips: a dairy-free nacho cheese made with cashews and spices, avocado with spirulina and herbs and an olive tepanade.

They went down really fast. But the Si Raw salad was my favorite. It’s a great mix of veggies, seeds and herbs, with a tangy lilikoi dressing.

It had bits of red bell pepper, sunflower seeds, dates, sugar snap peas, chia seeds, cucumber, carrots, romaine and red cabbage, while the dressing had lemon, fennel, tarragon and turmeric in it. I also tried the raw pizza, with ulu, zucchini and broccoli. The raw food is so creative and flavorful, it’s always delicious.

Everything served here has pretty much been made, grown or created in Hawaii.

“We get fresh frozen root from the Big Island, from Kava Dave,” says Tovie. “He runs the Bay Front Kava Bar in Hilo. He is like the kava man in Hilo. He distributes kava from the Hamakua coast.”

Their kombucha is from Awaken Tea, and you can get servings for $5-19. They aso have noni shots, cold brew coffee and chai. On Fridays they have a Farmer’s Market at 4 to 7pm. On Mondays they host a Pau Hana Kava Yoga Sesh at 5:30pm, and they go off on First Fridays in Wailuku.

Pau Hana Kava Cafe will host a Halloween Party on Friday, Oct. 30. Strazdas and Tovie are also working on getting a food truck in the courtyard. She would love to have some other lunch foods to offer and a truck seems the perfect fit.

Pinktober ALL THE WAYS YOU CAN HAVE FUN WHILE FIGHTING BREAST CANCER THIS MONTH

O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time for us to reflect on the fact that one in eight women will have to fight breast cancer sometime in their lives–the second most common cancer in women.

On Maui, the Pacific Cancer Foundation is launching Breast Cancer month with a ton of Go Pink events. Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina has always jumped in with lots of Pinktober events, and this year they hope to raise at least $10,000 for the Foundation.

First, the Maui Fire Department and the Maui Police Department will compete on who can sell the most Go Pink gear. Don’t be surprised if you see cops and firefighters wearing pink tee shirts as part of this friendly competition.

“So many of us have been hit hard by cancer,” Maui County Fire Chief, Jeff Murray says in a recent press release. “We want everyone to know we are here for the Maui community whether we are putting out fires or supporting cancer patients and survivors. We were looking for a way to do something locally, in our own community to help the folks battling cancer.”

MPD and MFD logo wear will be available beginning Oct. 1 and can be purchased online at Pacificcancerfoundation.org, the Kahului Fire House or the Wailuku Police Station. In November, the two departments will face off in a softball game billed as “Guns vs. Hoses.”

“We are so excited to be a part of this partnership with the Police and Fire Departments,” said Nancy La Joy, Executive Director of the Pacific Cancer Foundation. “They are an amazing group of people going above and beyond to do great things in our community. The support of our Maui ohana means so much to our organization.”

t’s Maui Pride Weekend–Oct. 2-4–when the LGBTQ lifestyle is celebrated by the community.

The Pride Festival’s message this year is “Love is Love,” which is meant to spread awareness of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same sex marriage.

The Maui Pride Festival has activities all weekend. Friday night will feature a film festival screening of Kumu Hina, a film about transgender Native Hawaiian Hina Wong-Kalu, who will make an appearance. Keali‘i Reichel will also perform. Following the festival on Friday night, there will be a dance party at Kono’s on the Green.

The annual Maui Pride Awards Gala and Dinner will spotlight the Maui Pride scholarships, education and community outreach. In fact, the organization will dish out more than $10,000

in scholarships at its awards gala. They will also recognize several college students who are positive influences in the LGBTQ community. There will be great food and music from the Kahili Golf Club. Maui Pride will also identify outstanding community members and organizations, like the Maui AIDS Foundation (MAF). The cure for HIV may still be out of reach, but MAF has been fighting for the LGBTQ community for more than 27 years.

“The educational scholarship program is the pinnacle of the work this organization does all year round,” said Chuck Spence, vice president of Maui Pride and owner of the Maui Sunseeker LGBT Resort in Kihei.

Ms. Hawaii 2015 Flecha Tovar and Hawaii State Senator Roz Baker, D–South Maui, will present the scholarships and community member awards, like the ones going to Deborah Vial and Caron Barrett for their financial support and volunteer work with Maui Pride.

“We do not just focus on Pride Weekend itself,” said board president Paul Tonnessen. “It is very important that we are here to support our community and the organizations that share our same goals.”

Later on Saturday night, dance music star Kristine W will perform at the Maui Pride ‘Love Wins’ Concert and Dance Party. This star has the world record for most number one Billboard club hits.

Relentlessly Cute ‘The Intern’ twinkles like a kitten, but isn’t that great ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 121 Min.

T

he best scenes in writer/director Nancy Meyers’ schmaltzy The Holiday were between Eli Wallach, playing an elderly Hollywood legend, and Kate Winslet, his best friend. In those scenes, a sweet, unforced, deeply rooted friendship was established between the wise old man and his affectionate young neighbor. Now, with Meyers’ new film The Intern, it seems she’s made a feature-length expansion of that subplot. While uneven, there is a real warmth to her latest work that’s rare in a modern Hollywood comedy.

Robert De Niro plays a widower and retiree who, for fun, applies for a senior intern position at an online clothing company.

Once hired, his presence is initially questionable, until his years of business experience inspires those around him, particularly his boss (played by Anne Hathway).

The Intern is so relentlessly cute, it practically twinkles. This is the cinematic equivalent of a kitten. In comparison, Cocoon is a gritty, hard-edged depiction of the elderly.

For better or worse, this is the kind of movie you could take your grandparents to, as I counted a single use of “the F-word,” a no-frills suggestion of hanky panky and nothing else remotely offensive. For much of Meyers’ film, I wondered if she wanted to infect me with the case of the “cutes” that clearly has taken over her actors.

De Niro and Hathaway are both good here but they’ve been such powerhouse actors elsewhere, this isn’t the best showcase for either of them.

After decades of playing some of the most tormented, conflicted, guilt-ridden, deranged or haunted figures in cinema, De Niro deserves his third act phase of having fun and not pushing himself too hard (unless it’s for David O’Russell). De Niro mugs a lot, appears both tightly wound as the lifelong professional but engages with his co-stars and loosens up when necessary. He gives the role what’s required but not much more. In fact, he was far more nuanced, suggested complex layers and was deeply moving in the little seen Everybody’s Fine, the under-appreciated 2009 drama where he also played a single, retired former businessman. Hathaway is ap-

pealing, beautiful and invests feeling into every scene, though she’s been better.

Meyers finally adds some comedic heft to the second act, during a scene of an ineptly staged, Danny Ocean-style heist. I won’t describe this ridiculous but welcome sequence, as it’s the funniest part of the movie. This setpiece is the shot in the arm that wakes up the whole movie, in the same way Steve Martin and Meryl Streep getting stoned belatedly brought Meyers’ It’s Complicated to life.

A late night scene, where De Niro and Hathaway have a layered, unguarded conversation on a hotel bed, is the film at its best: it wisely avoids the needless plot complication of suggesting any kind of sexual tension between the two leads and, finally, gives us a genuinely great scene for the two accomplished actors to sink their teeth into. The third act is consistently better than

what came before it, leading up to an unforced, quite lovely final scene I liked a lot.

While there’s a sensitivity to the issue of the age gap, this doesn’t dig deep enough into how both the young and old need to meet each other halfway and seek an understanding. On the other hand, this is much better than The Internship, the feature-length Google commercial in which the old guys at a tech company teach the callous young hipsters about life.

The best scenes cut through the mirth and have smart observations to make on the definition of a modern day businesswoman. The worst scene, easily, is when Rene Russo (playing the company masseuse) gives De Niro an erection. No two-time Academy Award winning actor should be subjected to a moment right out of Grumpier Old Men, although Jack Lemmon also won two Oscars, so never mind. ■

Slow down, slow down. I know how you love fast things. You dig fast cars (or better yet, motorcycles), fast Internet connections and loads of other fast things; even quickies hold a special allure for you on occasion. You know it can be dangerous moving at your favorite speeds–that’s part of the appeal. But if you know ahead of time that if you pass the speed limit (let alone double it, as you’re fond of attempting), you will definitely careen off the road, then you might be more inclined to keep your speedster tendencies in check. I don’t expect you to suddenly become a gleeful joiner, but you’re also not going to ever be perfectly happy doing the hermit/ loner thing. Find someplace where you belong, at least some of the time. It’ll do you good.

Your willingness to experiment has occasionally hurt people. It’s the unfortunate fallout that comes of taking something on that you’re not certain you’re up for.

But what else are you supposed to do? Sometimes the only way to figure out if you’re into something is to try it. All you can do is be honest with those involved that it’s just an experiment and it might not work out. That might not be enough to completely avoid bruised feelings, but it’s all you can (and should) do.
