2015: THE YEAR IN CLAIMS AGAINST THE STATE Oh, what a magical time it is. Here we are in the couple weeks of January–the nights have gotten a bit chilly, the whales are appearing and the state Legislature is preparing to go into session. The actual sausage-making doesn’t start until Jan. 20, but that doesn’t mean we can’t rummage around their online attic, looking for interesting stuff.

Like this report, which is whimsically titled State of Hawaii Department of Accounting and General Services Annual Report of Claims and Lawsuits Arbitrated, Compromised, or Settled for $10,000 or less for Fiscal Year 2014-2015. Okay, so maybe the title needed some trimming, but fear not: the meat of the report is juicy and delicious.

As the title makes clear, this is just a 30page list of all the claims (of up to $10,000) against the State of Hawaii that were paid off during the last fiscal year. The report lists 174 such claims for a total of $239,055.18 (the fact that the report shows the state paid out $210,431.53 indicates that filing a claim may be a wise decision). Most of the claims are pretty routine–pothole damage to cars, lost

Late last year, Maui County officials really started blaming the “Show Me The Water” law (passed back in 2007) for the county’s serious lack of affordable housing. The law, quite simply, requires housing developers to prove they had a long-term water source before the County Council would authorize new home construction. Mayor Alan Arakawa blamed it for a “3,000-unit deficit” while Councilmember Gladys Baisa said the law is “one of the main reasons why affordable housing has not been built.”

Councilmember Mike Victorino introduced a bill to repeal Show Me The Water, and the Council’s Water Resources Committee started holding hearings. The first was in early December, and another that considered amending the law was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 6 (Mauitime went to press as this hearing took place).

Now Shaka Movement–the grassroots organization last seen spearheading a ballot measure to ban GMO crops in Maui County (which was narrowly approved by the voters in 2014 and tossed out by the courts in 2015)–is fighting to save Show Me The Water.

“Developers want you to believe that our affordable housing shortage is due to the ‘strict’ regulations requiring them to show adequate water for those units,” states a Jan. 2 Shaka Movement press release. “They want you to believe that they cannot build more affordable units because of this water availability policy. The TRUTH is that our County doesn't actually know how many affordable units are OWED to the county from some of these same developers who have yet to build them, and who are lining up future projects without fulfilling their existing responsibilities. The TRUTH is that SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT (75%) of future housing units will be unavailable to most Maui residents as we have seen market priced units climb into the high $650,000s and up, thus making it unaffordable to many… The TRUTH is that many of these developers have been sitting on these affordable unit permits for years and have done NOTHING about them, all the while successfully building and selling their “market-priced” units within the project.”

Whoa, dial it down Shaka–yes, there are many reasons why affordable housing is practically non-existent on the island, but that’s no reason to go crazy with the caps lock key.

NEW UNDER-21 SMOKING BAN WENT INTO EFFECT ON JAN. 1

“It is my honor and privilege to serve alongside a group of individuals committed to making access to justice a reality for the people of Hawaii,” said Justice Acoba in a Dec. 31, 2015 news release. “I’d like to thank Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald for his continued leadership and support, the volunteer attorneys, community partners and legal service providers who make our mission possible.”

Put simply, the commission exists to make sure that access to proper legal service and advice is available to everyone in Hawaii.

They do this through Self-Help Centers located statewide, as well as a variety of other efforts. The need for such legal access is great, according to this list of facts found on the commission’s website: • Only 1 in 5 low and moderate-income Hawai‘i residents have their legal needs met.

• Legal service providers are able to help only 1 in 3 of those who contact them for assistance.

• The areas with the greatest unmet civil legal needs are housing (24%), family (23%),

In other new law news, effective Jan. 1, “anyone that operates a motion picture theater in more than two locations in the state” now has to provide “open captioning during at least two showings per week of each motion picture that is produced with open movie captioning,” according to a Dec. 30, 2015 press release from the Hawaii House of Representatives. The law also requires theaters “to provide an audio description of any motion picture that is produced and offered with audio description.”

This is the result of HB 1272, passed last year and signed into law by Governor David Ige. A wide variety of groups and organizations dedicated to assisting disabled people supported the bill. And why not?

Just wanted to remind you that starting on Jan. 1, the legal smoking age in the state of Hawaii rose from 18 to 21 years old. You can read all about it in our July cover story “Not Unless You’re 21” by Ashley Probst. Proponents of the law, according to our story, say it will really cut tobacco use: “According to studies done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4.6 million students reported being current tobacco users between 2011 and 2014, and roughly half those students reported using electronic smoking devices,” Probst wrote. “That means that one in four high school students and one in 13 middle school students are current users of tobacco products. Although the prevalence of tobacco use has been declining in Hawaii since 2000, the Hawaii Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (HTPEP) says the additional laws will help bring this rate down even more.”

Of course, at least one young smoker, Dominick Haney, told Probst that he didn’t think the new law would make much difference: “I’m just going to keep buying ciga-

rettes and if they don’t let me buy cigarettes, then my family will just buy them for me and the police are going to start giving me tickets,” Haney said.

Well, we’re all going to find out.

all the other states. No other state has enacted any legislation in this area. The U.S. Department of Justice will soon issue regulations that will set forth a national standard for all– the motion picture distributors, the theatres, as well as the theatre-going community.”

The MPAA also called the bill “unconstitutional” because “it requires and compels speech, in the form of open captioning.” The MPAA even warned of future litigation, saying that “Enacting the bill will likely invite a lawsuit, which will come at great cost to the state.”

News Of The Weird ONE-MAN ARSENAL According to the flabbergasted sheriff of rural Chesterfield County, South Carolina, “This has completely changed our definition of (what constitutes) an ‘ass-load’ of guns.”

Brent Nicholson, 51, had been storing more than 7,000 firearms (most of them likely stolen) in his home and a storage building on his property. Every room of the house was stacked with weapons, and it took four tractor-trailer trips to haul everything away, with help of 100 law-enforcement officers. Nicholson also had 500 chainsaws, at least 250 taxidermied deer, elk and alligator heads, and more. No motive was obvious to deputies. (Nicholson would still be living in the shadows today if he hadn’t run that stop sign on Oct. 21 with bogus license plates on his truck.)

HUMAN FANNY PACK Brandon Wilson, 26, was arrested in November in Cedar Rapids, Iowa–his second bust of 2015 in which a substantial number of crack cocaine “baggies” were found in his rectum. Fifty-one were recovered this time (counting the ones with marijuana), down from the 109 discovered in his February arrest. Police in November also found $1,700 cash on him (but just in his pocket).

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Following the release of Apple’s yearly financials in October (and based on sales of its iPhone 6), the company announced that, apart from other assets, it was sitting on $206 billion in cash–about like owning the entire gross domestic product of Venezuela, but all in cash.

Another way of expressing it: Using only its cash, Apple could buy every single NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL team, plus the 20 most valuable international soccer teams–and still have plenty left. Or, as the BGR.com blog also pointed out, it could instead simply give every man, woman and child in America $646 (coincidentally, about what a new iPhone 6 sells for).

NOT A GOOD SIGN Even if Armageddon doesn’t happen, the CEO of the massive online retailer Overstock. com believes there is a “10 to 20 percent” chance of a world financial meltdown in the next few years, and he is arranging to be back in business in the aftermath. Patrick Byrnes told the NewYork Post in November he has stashed away enough food in a well-fortified facility in Utah’s Granite Mountain to serve his 2,000 employees for “30 to 60 days,” along with several thousand other emergency preparations and $10 million in gold. But, he insisted, he’s not a gun-toting “prepper;” the plan is only about tiding employees over until the Internet and banking systems are back up and running.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS In November in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mison Sere, 42, was judged winner of the 4th annual “Mister Ugly” contest after showcasing his seemingly random

However, many in the crowd thought their favorite was even uglier and threatened to riot. “I am naturally ugly,” said a jealous (former winner) William Masvinu; “He (Sere) is ugly only when he opens his mouth.”

COOL MOMS? Jennifer Terry, 44, was charged with driving her daughter and several other minors around Riverdale, Utah, in August to facilitate their tossing eggs at 10 to 20 homes.

Some damage was reported, but so far, Terry is the only one charged. And Mandy Wells, 32, told police that she thought “for a minute” that it was a bad idea, “but did it anyway”–she invited 10 kids (aged 12 to 14) to her home for a party and served beer and marijuana. Wells, of Springtown, Texas, said her daughter, 14, smokes marijuana because the girl (go figure!) suffers from depression.

WAIT WHAT Kuala Lumpur International Airport took out ads in two Malaysian daily newspapers in December to find the owners of three Boeing 747-200Fs parked there for months (one for at least a year) and threatening to auction them off in 14 days if not claimed. Two are white, and one is “off-white” (if the reader is checking his inventory). The planes’ last listed owner said it sold them in 2008.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Matthew Riggins had told his girlfriend earlier that he and a pal were planning to burglarize some homes around Barefoot Bay in Brevard County, Florida, and was apparently on that mission on Nov. 23 when an alert resident called 911, and the men scrambled. The accomplice was caught several days later, but Riggins himself did not survive the night–having taken refuge in nearby woods and drowning trying to outswim an apparently hungry 11-foot alligator.

UPDATE Russian artist Pyotr Pavlensky, 31, has devoted his career to getting on the government’s nerves and succeeded once again in November. (News of the Weird last mentioned him in 2013 when he nailed his scrotum to the floor in Moscow’s Red Square to protest police oppression.) In his latest event, he set fire to the front door of the headquarters of Russia’s security service (the FSB, formerly KGB) and has been detained–though from his cell, he demanded his charge of “vandalism” be changed to “terrorism.”

100 YEARS

I

t’s early on a chilly Makawao morning, but I’ve come Upcountry to participate in ritual that stretches back a century: waiting in line on Baldwin Avenue to get into Komoda’s Bakery. It’s a holiday tradition for me, and many more on Maui.

One hundred years of Komoda’s. It’s hard to believe, but at the same time, not hard to believe.

Back in November of 1916 when it first opened, Komoda’s sat kitty-corner to its current location–where Polli’s stands now–but I’m certain their saimin, fresh bread and sandwiches were lineworthy then. It’s a mixed crowd today, tourists and locals alike are forming up to get their goodies.

Their selection ranges from the bakery’s popular butter rolls, cream puffs and stick donuts to their turnovers, pies, cakes and Long Johns.

Soon, T Komoda Store and Bakery patriarch Calvin Shibuya, his wife Betty and their daughter Michelle welcome me into the store. It suddenly dawns on me that I’ve been eating pastries and breads from Komoda’s Bakery my whole

life. Other mom and pop markets, okazuya and bakeries have closed, but I can still buy from Komoda’s. The morning hustle is in full force, and giant bakers racks–full of wonderful sweets–are getting pushed into position for the day. In the first half hour that I’m there, pies and pre-packed boxes of cream puffs fly out of the bakery. This is hardly surprising–on a recent Monday I stopped by at 1pm, only to find that they had sold out of everything a full three hours before their 4pm closing time.

I ask Calvin about tourists discovering Komoda’s. This is something he’s seen really take off over the last decade.

“We were mostly local,” he says.

“Then when we had the depression in 2008 sales really really dropped. The locals haven’t picked up the level of their purchases as it used be, which indicates the economy is still not as strong as it used to be. But that is where the tourists have filled in. The highlight for me is the continued support that we get from the community. We are so blessed with the loyalty of our customers. In recent years, the tourists have really helped us out in sales. Without them, I don’t think we would have success.

Through their support we have been successful for 99 years.”

Calvin and Betty and their family are also a big part of Komoda’s continued success.

“I’m a newbie,” Calvin says. “I only started in 1990. I am an outsider. My wife is the Komoda. The reason why I am involved is because back in 1990 the bakers–chief baker Ikuo Komoda and his brothers–were all reaching retirement age. They were considering all retiring. Consequently, the business at the bakery was in jeopardy of closing unless someone came in to help. That is how I got involved.”

After his career in the Air Force, Calvin moved back to Maui to take up baking.

“My plan was to always come back to Maui to take care of family obligations,” he says. “I have always had that in the back of my mind that I was going to come back here. However my goal was to go fly for the airlines. But because the business needed help I decided to forgo that and come here and work in the bakery. Which I don’t mind, it is really rewarding to run the business, and apply some of the things that you learned in school.”

Calvin says Ikuo taught him what he needs to know, but he’s also had to develop his own recipes and innovate.

“If we cannot get an ingredient, we stop making a product,” Calvin tells me.

“A good case in point is our cakes. Ikuo used to make the cakes from scratch, and it was tedious and time-consuming.

Very manpower intensive.When Ikuo fell ill and could not work any more, we did not have any cakes because he was the one making all of our cakes.

We took the cakes off of the menu for a year. And then I said, ‘God, we have to have cakes, we are a full-scale bakery, I am a baker!’ And that is when I started to experiment. Although I have his recipe, I just couldn’t do it his way. It was too much on me. I went ahead and developed my own recipe, testing it on

my workers. They are the ones that tell me it’s ok. Right now, people can’t tell the difference, and it’s a really simple system. I am really glad I came up with this idea to redevelop the cakes.”

Calvin and Ikuo also developed the bakery’s current bread recipe together.

“Our bread recipe is a combination recipe between Ikuo and I,” says Calvin.

“We came up with this. The original recipe was forgotten when the person that was baking the bread couldn’t remember what the ingredients and the proportions were.”

Ikuo Komoda returned to Makawao from baking school in 1947, toting his pastry recipes that have since formed the bakery’s standby cream puffs and stick donuts. The bakery, opened by Takezo Komoda and his wife Shigeri had already been around for 31 years.

Later, Takeo Komoda, the eldest son of Takezo and Shigeri, ran the business with his wife Kiyuko with other family members. Today, Takezo and Shigeri’s granddaughter Betty, her husband Calvin and their daughter Michelle carry on the traditions and recipes. Calvin says the cream puffs he prepares each day are identical to Ikuo’s.

“The recipe has not changed,” says Shibuya. “Although Ikuo is now gone–he passed away about a month ago. He entrusted the formula to me and I continue to use it.”

Of course, tastes do change. The cream puff is not as popular as it used to be. Since the Shibuyas have come to Komoda’s, Calvin says the stick donut is king.

“The volume of cream puff sales have dwindled,” he says. “Now the stick donut has become an icon like the cream puff. The volume of the stick donuts has more than quadrupled since the ‘90s. The volume has just really gone up, while the cream puff has gone down.”

Putting donuts on a stick wasn’t even Ikuo’s idea–in fact, it was a customer’s.

“It was recommended by a customer from Seabury Hall,” says Calvin. “Ikuo did not know who the person was, just somebody from Seabury recommended ‘put it on a stick.’ He took that to heart and started making the stick donuts.

Probably the ingredients have changed but basically the recipe remains the same. It’s not a wheat dough; it’s a different kind of dough. When anyone first tries a stick donut they always say ‘Wow! That is so good.’”

While the popularity of various products has changed, the sales volume has returned to where it used to be before 2008.

“Our sales have come back up,” says Calvin. “The volume of product is based on history–if it’s a holiday or standard day. The volume will be different for Christmas and Thanksgiving. After New Year’s it will slow down. Bread is not as popular as the butter rolls. The butter rolls are really popular. The pies and cakes have maintained the same level. Except for pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving–people love our pumpkin pies.”

Calvin says turning 100 this year is exciting for the family and the business.

“Turning 100 is an achievement that not very many people can claim,” he says. “I would like to have a really big celebration in November. What the celebration is and what we plan on doing is up to my daughters. They are the planning committee. They are supposed to come up with the ideas.”

For them the key to staying in business this long comes down to your workforce and attitude–it’s not always about expanding. Komoda Bakery has come into its centennial with just a brick and mortar store. They have no website to maintain and post to no social media sites. Right now, 40 percent of the bakery’s staff are family members.

But when I ask Calvin if he’s hiring, he laughs, saying he just hired someone and she’s a Godsend.

Here’s how Calvin explains their longevity: “First of all, you have to have a niche,” he says. “If it’s a product or a service, whatever. Once you find your niche, you have to maintain the quality.

Quality control is so important. You have to maintain the same level of service or taste in your products. Don’t try to overdo and stress out your work place.

Be happy with what you have. Do not only think about expansion. I think a lot of businesses fail because they expand and only want to get bigger and bigger.

It’s a downfall, you can’t do it. Especially if your workforce is maintained at the same level. You can’t do it and you are going to stress them out.”

After the New Year, the bakery took a few days off and but they will reopen at 7am on Thursday, Jan. 7. They are open weekdays except Wednesday from 7am to 4pm. They’re open on Saturdays from 7am to 2pm but closed on Sunday.

The full service bakery has an extensive menu, which they’ve kept at reasonable prices. There are chocolate and vanilla cream puffs, pies, donuts, cakes, cupcakes, malasadas, breads, rolls, hamburger and hot dog buns, cookies, turnovers, long johns and more. I’ve always loved their hot dogs, which come out hot in fresh bread buns.

There are so many items on the menu that I’ve made new favorites through the years. My latest are cupcakes, cakes and pies. I always pick up two bags of butter rolls, one for the office and one for home. The store also displays a lot of memorabilia of a running a business in a bygone era tucked into corners here and there, along with tons of pantry essentials, birthday cake candles, postcards and logo tee shirts.

Calvin says they plan to make a few changes to the menu this year.

“I have had a strategic meeting with the powers that be and we are going to be scaling back and discontinuing certain products,” he says. “Items that are not really profitable, or too manpower intensive.

We are going to start cutting some products out. Eventually, because right now I am the only one doing the baking” My goal is to make sure I’ve tried everything before they get pulled, but in the meantime I ask Calvin why he doesn’t just bring in someone else to help with the baking.

“I have considered having someone come in and help with the baking, but what I am looking for is someone to take over,” says Shibuya. “It’s time for me to retire. Ku'ulei Hanohano and Toni Matsuda make it Mo' Ono

T

oni Matsuda and Ku‘ulei Hanohano make some of the best acai bowls I’ve ever put in my belly. You can get the bowls by going to their food truck–called Mo ‘Ono Hawai‘i–at the Kahului small boat harbor.

They have been bringing their truck to this location full time for the last two months, but they started their acai bowl business about four years ago.

“After eating a lot of acai bowls on Oahu, I had a craving for it over here,” says Hanohano. “But no one was selling acai bowls then. The craze hadn’t reached Maui.

So we started making them for ourselves at home, trying different recipes.”

Matsuda and Hanohano both graduated from Kamehameha Maui High School, and having recently finished their undergrad at UH Maui College, they decided to devote their time to the truck. Their families pitched in to build out their really cute purple and yellow mobile acai kitchen, and they keep it bedecked with a flower arrangement and signage. There’s definitely a nice girl’s touch here.

“We developed our recipe on taste,” says Hanohano. “Our recipe tasted good to us. A lot of times when you go to get an acai bowl, it just comes with a set amount of toppings. For us, we start with our signature base and customers can choose what they like on top of it. A lot of times other acai bowls have a set mix, we think ours is a bit different, and that is what makes it ‘ono.”

Their signature base ingredients are secret. It’s acai plus some special stuff that makes it good, according to Hanohano. The bowls come in three sizes:

small 12-oz ($5), medium 16-oz ($7) or large 24-oz ($10). Then you can choose your toppings–banana, strawberry, pineapple, coconut, almonds, granola and honey. You can choose everything if you like. Then you can get add-ons like lilikoi butter and Greek yogurt for a dollar more each. I ask the girls what’s the best, and they said that if you like everything, then you should try it with everything because that one is the bomb. They were right–delicious down to the last spoonful.

They built up a following making their bowls for events and pop-ups even before they got their mobile truck going. But now that they plan to stay full time in it, there’s no telling how many more Mo ‘Ono Acai addicts they will recruit. In face, in order for us to meet I had to come 15 minutes before opening because lately they’ve had lines form as they were setting up. And when I was there, morning traffic was non-stop and began as soon as the window opened.

“That is why our name is Mo ‘Ono,” says Hanohano. “Because ‘ono means delicious but it also means to crave something.

A lot of times for our customers, they crave it, and we crave it, too. That is our motto.

he 808 Plates food truck is the great big ocean blue and chrome beauty that parks just to the Waiehu side of the entrance to the Kahului small boat harbor.

Brothers Kainoa and Rycin Pavao run the truck (which is open Monday through Friday from 10:30pm to 5pm) and they say every day is different, from the weather to the menu to the tastes of the customers. But mostly they love working for themselves, and at 24 and 22 years old, respectively, they are some of the youngest restaurateurs I know.

They’ve been parking at this spot for about a year now. They said they tried Lahaina and loved it but the drive over the Pali was hard on them. They’ve parked at the other side of the harbor entrance but there isn’t always enough room for the truck over there. They figured on just parking at their current spot every time, and it caught on. They focus their menu around seafood and it changes every day, depending on what the boats bring in.

“Our menu is based on fresh fish,” says Kainoa. “We just figured we would use the resources around us. We have all these fishermen in Hawaii. There are about five or six boats that fish for the truck. Two of them are full time. There is pretty much a fisherman that goes out every other day.

That is how we get our fish. We do chicken, steak, ribs and shrimp, too.”

“There are a couple of popular dishes,” says Rycin. “The garlic ahi katsu, the wasabi-glazed ahi katsu, the ribeye steak and the coconut shrimp. We have a big menu.”

I met them early in the morning, as they were writing up the menu. Kainoa says he started working at Costco, then did some

work at Kinaole food truck, when his dad offered to help him start off on his own food truck business. He went to the Mainland in search of the truck, an adventure in and of itself, he says.

They only use sashimi-grade ahi for their poke, and it’s really fresh and succulent with furikake and a dark glaze of seasoning. Their ribeye is served steak bites style seasoned just right. They do their ahi katsu in plain, garlic, wasabi style or teriyaki. I tried the garlic ahi katsu. The katsu-breaded, deep-fried ahi chunks are coated in garlic with a garlic aioli on top. It’s one of those dishes you can’t stop eating until it’s gone.

“Growing up over here we hear a lot of people grumbling about their work,” says Kainoa. “I’m just happy we found something we don’t mind doing. We both love cooking, we started off always cooking for family. I like feeding people, I like to see their reaction. I want them to tell me if it’s junk, or tell me if they love it. That is what we are here for.”

The day I went they also had fried poke, breaded teriyaki, Korean chicken, ahi belly and garlic chicken. All their plates come with rice and greens, but the menu does change up frequently with what’s available, and what the fishermen are bringing in. Be warned: if the ahi isn’t perfect, they won’t have poke.

The plates run from $8 to $12 depending on the day. They also do the 4th Friday Town Party in Kihei and occasional private events and concerts.

“I like working for myself,” says Kainoa.

“It’s difficult to juggle with my personal life.

But at the end of the day we are here working our own business and that feels good.” ■

Frank Vignola's Coming To The MACC HERE’S WHY THIS IS A BIG DEAL

on that guitar like nobody’s business. I’d be terrified to play with Frank–it’s a very tough genre, and not that many Americans play this way.

I haven’t met him, but I have DVDs of some of his concerts. He did a solo of “Donna Lee,” an old Charlie Parker song. It’s a challenging song–the guy’s versatility is really deep. Frank is able to reach way back into American jazz from the beginning.

When I was playing Gypsy jazz, I knew of most of the players in Europe,

a lot–mostly in commercials. Johnny Depp plays it in the movie Chocolat.

And Willie Nelson’s favorite guitar player is Django Reinhardt. Most people may not know much about the genre, but most old time metal and rock guys cite Django as a big love.

It’s physically demanding–not just a brain thing. It’s acoustic music played with the power of rock. You can’t be a wimp playing Gypsy jazz. It’s not for everybody, but I like it. And I can tell you Frank is one of the best guys playing it.

f you’re like me, the name Frank Vignola probably doesn’t mean much.

I only know of him because he’s playing at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center next week. If you look up his name online (at Frankvignola.com), you’ll find that he’s a 51-year-old musician who bills himself as a “guitarist extraordinaire” and “one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today.”

Sure, I scoffed too, until I spoke with my friend Tom Conway, a talented guitarist in his own right who plays gigs all around Maui, including Thursday nights with Willie K at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.

According to Conway, Vignola is extraordinary–a true musical genius. In fact, Conway was so effusive in his praise for Vignola that I’ll just let him finish this story:

I

I first heard of Frank Vignola when I was playing a lot of Gypsy jazz about 10,

12 years ago. Not that many Americans were playing that. He’s played with Mark O’Connor, Jimmy Rosenberg. Frank is one of America’s best acoustic guitar players, for sure.

Gypsy jazz is like American swing music, but instead of being orchestrated for a big band, it’s for guitars and violins, with no drums and then some little Gypsy inflections added in. It was first pioneered by the great Django Reinhardt.

It’s American jazz with European elements. Django Reinhardt was the prime architect of that style, and he was a musical sensation (he died in 1953).

From what I know about Frank, he did a residency with Les Paul–Frank was his rhythm guitar player. Frank is a great all-around guitar player, but I’m most impressed with his rhythm guitar playing. A lot of guys can pick hot licks, but Frank is incredible. He can get moving

but at the time, there were very few Americans playing at that level. Frank, however, is a Gypsy jazz master.

We had a niche here on Maui–at the time, we were the only band in the state that played this kind of music. But if I had to sit around at home waiting for the phone to ring from people wanting us to play Gypsy jazz, I’d have to get another job.

Because not a lot of people have ever heard of Gypsy jazz. I could walk into Bounty Music and ask 20 people, “Do you know Frank Vignola?” “Nope.” Even my musician friends don’t know who Frank is. I subscribe to Guitar Player magazine, and he’s not someone you see there a lot. I only know about Frank because I’m a guitar nut.

Pointless Swagger There’s a lot to hate in ‘The Hateful Eight’ ★★★★★ Rated R / 187 Min.

I

spent my last 2015 movie review touting my lifelong fandom of Star Wars, so allow me to begin 2016 by declaring my feelings for Quentin Tarantino. After the opening minutes of Reservoir Dogs, he had an instant fan in me. I saw Pulp Fiction twice in theaters, once on opening day, then months later, with a cheering audience, when it was up for Best Picture. I spent two Christmas Eves attending the premieres of the disastrous, quasi-Tarantino anthology Four Rooms and Jackie Brown, which wasn’t a disaster. Like everyone else, I was addicted to The Bride’s quest to kill Bill.

But I had issues with Django Unchained. Exploiting slavery violence in a glorified B-movie felt like a misstep, as if Tarantino were trying to shock us by showing off, and not with his usual pop culture wit. Likewise, his latest goes over the line, but for material that doesn’t seem worth the trouble.

The Colorado-shot The Hateful Eight is a post-Civil War western in which eight despicable outlaws are holed up in Min-

nie’s Haberdashery during a blizzard. Of the actors, Kurt Russell and especially Samuel L. Jackson are so commanding that their performances stand with their best work. The rest of the cast isn’t as well positioned with their roles, as Walt Goggins’ flamboyant work can’t overcome how onenote his character is (ditto Bruce Dern).

Tim Roth uses the same unfortunate vocal mannerisms from Four Rooms, while the only thing interesting about Michael Madsen’s character is the actor playing him. Channing Tatum is poorly miscast, his boyish, low key charisma at odds with the vermin he’s playing. Jennifer Jason Leigh is portraying the latest in a long line of Tarantino femme fatales who are beaten but stronger than they appear; unlike the women Uma Thurman played for Tarantino, Leigh’s increasingly feral character and performance grows more degrading with each passing hour.

After an intriguing start, the longwinded 187 minutes begins to drag.

There’s no sustained tension or momentum. The intrusion of blackouts and title cards only stops and starts the tale, eliminating the suspense.

formed me that some of it is a reprise of his work from Exorcist II: The Heretic and John Carpenter’s The Thing, a movie this visually and thematically references.

There’s also a lot of McCabe and Miss Miller, though Robert Altman’s western has never been matched for its depiction of the wild west as a muddy, dirty, morally scuzzy landscape of lost souls. Tarantino piles on the film references but even his song choices seem off.

By the end, the result is not only mean-spirited but quite sadistic. Tarantino has been justifiably cagey for journalists and critics who slap him on the wrist for his ultra-violence: he has a right to utilize extreme bloodletting in his narratives, for either story turns or shock value. He’s not the first to do so

and won’t be the last. However, whereas the violence in prior his films have been used as dark humor, character reveals or commentaries on audience expectations, the wit in his splatter is absent here.

These characters aren’t just hateful, they’re vile and the camera revels in their sick behavior. I remain a Tarantino fan and appreciate how his works inspire film fans to seek out the films that inspired him. But his latest is a swaggering, pointless mess, both in terms of story and the pools of blood it leaves behind.

Since Tarantino loves to quote his prior works, here’s the final sentence from my Django Unchained review: “Django Unchained isn’t as hip and above the hateful muck as much as it thinks.” The same goes for his latest, hateful muck. ■
