In very sad news, Pat Masumoto, one of Maui’s greatest artistic treasures, passed away this weekend. Her cause of death hasn’t yet been reported, but it apparently occurred sometime around Friday, Jan. 22, according to her Facebook page, which filled with tributes over the weekend.

I last saw Masumoto perform in 2015 during a One Night Only (ONO) show at the Iao Theater. It was just a bunch of local creative people going onstage and read from their favorite books. Masumoto chose Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, but she didn’t just read from the book–she transformed into a Russian prince, full of magnificent bombast and flourish. Whether you were watching her perform, listening to her words or seeing the color and splendor she gathered at her old Gallerie Ha in Wailuku, you knew you were experiencing something special.

Here’s an excerpt from Anu Yagi’s Apr. 28, 2011 story “Mama Drama,” on Masumoto’s My Mama Monologues, which (of course) sprang from Masumoto’s relationship with her own mother, affectionately known as Grandma Florence. Given Grandma Florence’s age at the time of writing (she passed away at the age of 105 in 2014), it was perhaps inevitable that Masumoto’s monologue touches on death.

Here, Yagi wonderfully captured Masumoto’s humor, attention to detail, heart and gentle humanity:

This year, “She Did Not Die” is on hiatus, so I’ve been cleared for spoilers. The punch line to the story’s sad gore (because yes, it’s a comedy) builds off the premise of Grandma Florence’s consummate frugality (she’s a career bookkeeper who only recently retired as “the oldest marriage licensor in America” and who Masumoto writes is “a humanoid adding machine’). At a time when ‘it looked like death warmed over her,” Masumoto concludes: “Mom’s eyes suddenly opened wide. She stared at me for about five seconds—then came the words, barely audible, ‘Patty.

Write this down.’ …What was she going to tell me? Had she left her body and gone to the other side, only to return with an important message? I pressed my ear against her mouth. She gave me Mr. Kawaguchi’s phone number! Then instructed loudly, ‘Please call him. Let him know that I won’t be coming to the Credit Union luncheon on Saturday… Ask him if I can have

MAUI TEEN SPOTLIGHTED ON HIKI NO A Maui teen with Tourette Syndrome has re-entered public school with more confidence–and her story has been highlighted on HIKI NO, a weekly student news show that airs on PBS Hawaii. Bristyl Dempsey, 13, was diagnosed with the neurological disorder while she was in intermediate school.

Classmates teased Dempsey because of her tics–and one teacher thought she was intentionally misbehaving in class.

Because of these difficulties, Dempsey’s mother had her home-schooled for one year.

During that time, Bristyl’s symptoms improved through therapies including meditation. Now that she has joined her peers in public school, she has a renewed confidence and aspires to be a cheerleader.

The episode of HIKI NO premiered Jan. 21 on PBS Hawaii (you can watch it online at PBSHawaii.org).

The episode featuring Bristyl was hosted by students attending Ewa Makai Middle School Oahu; the episode also features stories about students from MidPacific Institute in Honolulu who profile ukulele phenom Jody Kamisato, who chose the high risk/high reward route of opening his own music school over the option of being an employee of someone else’s school.

Additional segments will feature students from Wheeler Middle School offering tips on how to prepare an emergency kit in the event of a hurricane; students from Kalani High School introducing The Canvas, a student designed, student run work/play space in Kalihi.

In keeping with the theme of students creating their own venues of expression, the episode takes a look at a past HIKI NO story from Maui Waena Intermediate School about a high school student who created a youth version of TEDx, global events that promote “ideas worth spreading.”

Additionally, students from Kapolei High School on West Oahu tell the story of a youth volunteer at the Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a no-kill animal shelter.

HIKI NO is a weekly student news show created and produced by students from a statewide network of schools. Maui’s 2016 Art of Trash event will highlight art that is made from materials that are reused, recycled and reinvented with an opening night Trashion Show April 8 at the Maui Mall.

This year’s event was designed to celebrate Earth Day and will run April 8-30 with the goal of finding artwork that promotes creative reuse, stimulates environmental awareness and redefines how we view “garbage.”

Entry day for the Art of Trash 2016 juried show is April 2. Exhibit organizers will be accepting work from artists between 9:30am and 3pm at Maui Mall in the store space across from Thailand Cuisine; the entry fee is $15 per piece. Please note that driftwood pieces, water-feature pieces and works that include food are not accepted.

More than $30,000 in scholarships are now available to Lahainaluna High School seniors and alumni for the 2016-2017 school year. Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s Scholarship Committee has announced that a total of $35,000 in scholarships will be made available for the upcoming school year.

Ten scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each and one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to qualifying seniors who will be graduating from Lahainaluna in 2016. Scholarship eligibility requirements include being accepted into an accredited four-year college or university; students must also write an essay as part of the eligibility requirements.

Additionally, five scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each and one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to currently enrolled full-time college or trade school students in 2016. Eligibility for these scholarships includes being an alumnus of Lahainaluna High School.

to Be Kind’ and ‘Save The Planet’,” said Ryan Beenken, Sales and Marketing Manager for Hard Rock Cafe Maui. “The scholarship helps us support youths and their aspirations of furthering their music education.”

oga is an ancient philosophy from India with many contemporary applications. It’s gained popularity for its fitness and stress-relieving aspects, and while most of us know it’s good for the spine, did you know there are many other ailments that yoga can treat? In India, yoga is practiced with meditation, breathing and body poses, with several different schools of thought from Hatha to Ashtanga. We asked our local yogis to match an asana that can counter a particular body ailment, and what they found may surprise you. Forget apples– an asana a day can definitely keep the headaches at bay. Whatever’s bothering your body or mind, there’s an asana for that.

Ohhh, anger. An emotion that’s not pretty.

Those who see my yoga practice now would never believe this but when I first found Vinyasa yoga, I was deeply in love yet so freaking pissed, all at the same time. Very much like a soap opera love story or novella as we call it in Southern California. Heart-wrenching and intensely fulfilling, yet, at least for me in the beginning, so incredibly dramatic.

Anytime a posture or transition came up for me that was challenging, you could feel my blood boil from a mile away. I truly believe this is why it’s called a yoga “practice.” By no means is anger something that we get rid of but it’s something that we get better at. The more we learn on our yoga mats, the more we can apply to our lives. Most of the students that come to my classes know that this type of philosophy will be woven into the physical work that we’re doing. Postures like Bakasana or Crow Pose test our endurance.

This helps us establish a genuine relationship with our mind control. The Bhagavad Gita, which is basically the most profound book anyone may ever read, states that “He who can withdraw his senses completely from the sense objects like a tortoise withdraws its limbs, his mastery is established.” To me, that’s like saying that if we can control the fluctuations of our mind, then we’ve become a master at living in this life.

Ujjayi or the conqueror breath is pivotal for withdrawing our senses.You can imagine a similar feeling and sound of fogging up a mirror or sunglasses, that same kind of “haa” sound and vibration but the mouth is closed.

Open the left nostril and exhale to the count of four to eight. The longer you can make the exhalation, the better. Concentrate on completely emptying the lungs. Breathe in through that same left nostril to the count of four. Close off the nostril with the ring finger again and hold to the count of one to four. Exhale through the right nostril to the count of four to eight. This makes up one round of Nadi Shodhana.

This is an easier option to invert without doing a headstand or handstand. If you wish to detoxify, you can activate the kidneys a bit more by lowering one leg to the earth and then raising it back up and then alternate. I find it calming, mind-opening and open to all perspectives. It’s wonderful to enter and leave this pose from Halasana (plough pose).

This pose reduces stress and fatigue, calms the mind, aids in insomnia, and invigorates abdominal organs.

Detox can mean many things. People can detox the obvious things, chemicals, alcohol, food and poisons. But there’s also detoxing the viruses of the mind. Feelings like sadness, grief, anger, resentment and judgment can be released out of the mind.

I practice hot yoga, and postures like back bends really help to detox the deep internal organs. With the breathing, combined with stretching and sweating, the body can release these impurities. Hot yoga helps assist one in releasing the waste around the waist and helps it pour out the pores. The toxins from the mind, like stress and depression can release. It’s understood that the brain can only handle so much stress and anxiety. It has to discharge it into the body. Depending on your condition, this can lead to headaches, tight neck, shoulder pain, TMJ and stomach

When I feel bloated I will often practice apanasana (which translates to wind removing pose). This posture invites us to lay on our back and draw one or both knees into our chest, drawing our bent knees in closer by holding them with our hands or arms. The closeness of the legs to the belly can help relieve the pressure experienced when we feel bloated and stimulates digestion which can help get things moving! ■

Nuturing Water Therapy

M

assage is an incredibly nurturing thing that you can do for your body. It can be relaxing and detoxifying, meditative and cathartic. Compression brings oxygen and blood flow to muscles, and it can increase movement around stiff joints. It can detox by stimulating your lymphatic system and flushing waste. Massage styles of Lomi Lomi, Swedish and Thai are very tangible studied modalities to the muscle and body. There are some lesser known modalities of massage that specialize in energy, surroundings or specific parts of the body. Some of these therapies call on the healing energies of the universe, Mother Nature and the inner self, but they can all be found on Maui.

When veteran massage therapist Vicki Sorenson discovered Ashiatsu–a deep tissue massage done with the feet–on the Big Island three years ago, she knew instantly that she was on to something.

“I already had 20 years of professional massage under my belt,” says Sorenson. “But it was like learning massage all over again.”

Sorenson says she discovered the style on Youtube, and found a teacher from Sacramento. She calls her therapy DeepFeet Bar Therapy. She dispenses a deep, gliding compression massage with her feet, while she’s supported by parallel bars over the massage table.

For Jen Leighty, Janzu Water Massage brought her back to health after being told she needed surgery for ulcerative colitis. After several trips to the hospital and facing a life on pharmaceuticals, she sought alternatives. When aquatic therapy paved the way to her recovery, she in turn became a pupil of the healing art.

“The man who became my teacher, Janzu Master Sol Naciente, is the primary figure in the Janzu community in Latin America responsible for carrying on its legacy since its creator, Juan Pathik Villatoro, passed on about 10 years ago,” says Leighty.

“I won’t go into every breakthrough I had in my sessions with Janzu, but I will tell you that I was finally able to release the emotional traumas that had manifested in me as ulcerative colitis and that I’m now cured, free of medications, and living the life of my dreams as a Janzu healer.”

Janzu is well known in Mexico where Leighty learned, but she’s the first to offer it here. The process involves wearing a swimsuit and nose plug and meeting at a large natural body of water, fresh or salt water. You float in a passive state while the therapist moves your body through the water. As sessions progress, your therapist may take you under the water.

“It’s an opportunity to trust and surrender, to be held and nurtured in an unconditional, non-judgmental way,” say Leighty.

Shannon Paapanen, a lecturer in the Inner Peace Movement, says she teaches techniques that unfold your gifts of psychic and spiritual perception, allowing people to gain a bigger picture of who they are, which lets them relax and heal themselves.

At Padma’s Healing Heaven in Haiku, Xiaofang Chen Padma says energy healing is the future of medicine. Padma uses purity of intention, aura, color therapy, cleansing light and cellular focus for her quantum touch therapy sessions.

“In 2006 I read a book called Quantum Touch,” says Padma. “It simply explained how love is the healing energy. As a native Chinese, I grew up with a culture in Qi-gong and nature–how the body universe and our outer universe correspond to each other. I’ve done energy work now for 10 years.”

Or, how acupuncture can do a lot more than just alleviate pain

A

cupuncture, herbal medicine and Qigong make up a three-pronged approach to whole body health that’s been practiced in China for thousands of years. It was brought to America in the 1970s and has slowly become well known in Western medicine for pain management. But there are many more conditions beyond pain that acupuncture can help with.

Jeffrey Tice, the owner and acupuncturist at Longevity Health Center in Wailuku, knows this very well. His vision for Longevity is to create a new model of integrative health for individuals that includes practitioners of acupuncture, massage, chiropractor, Chinese medicine and eventually a medical doctor, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

“Our business is a bit different from many small healthcare offices in the model that I used to create it,” says Tice. “We are offering many common services and presenting them to the community with a unified front, but most of our providers are self-employed and run their own business within our walls. Our services are all built within the model of Integrative Medicine, a modern phrase, created by traditional and classical Chinese medicine,

the ancient practice.”

Tice built a cohesive clinic where a person can make appointments for the different kinds of services–a one-stop shop, of sorts. At the clinic, you can choose from several different therapies, and they accept most forms of insurance. Longevity also offers a community acupuncture clinic Mondays through Thursdays.

“I don’t like paperwork,” he says. “Most of us as sole proprietors are tasked with a lot of stuff we do not like doing, just to get our practice running. I don’t like administration or dealing with insurance companies.

None of us do. but it is a necessary evil, and in order to do what we love to do that part has to come with it. so I have envisioned that the medical professionals partner with a business person and divide the work. What we are trying to do is streamline the experience for the consumer. We want to provide education for patients so people can make better choices for themselves. I want to fill all the gaps for my patients. Right now, when you get injured you have to drive all over town to get different therapies. I would like to prevent that from happening for our patients. There is no continuity of care, and I want to change that.”

The idea behind community acupuncture is to provide access to care at a lower cost.

Tice also says that the level of healing energy in the room gets elevated when everyone is getting treated at the same time.

“The model of care we want to eventually have here is five branches,” says Tice. “One, acupuncture. Two, herbal medications and Chinese

herbs. Three, massage and chiropractic. Four, exercise. And the last branch is Five, meditation.”

When you think of acupuncture treatments, probably the last thing that comes to mind is pediatrics. But at Iao Acupuncture in Wailuku, owner and acupuncturist Christine Asuncion is very familiar with treatments for children, and says it can be very advantageous to their health.

“People are unaware that kids can benefit from acupuncture, and one of the first things they ask is do the kids get needles?” she says.

“They can but actually I do pediatrics mostly without needles. We refer to that as a treatment protocol called Shoni Shin–it’s a traditional Japanese treatment. We use certain tools to help move stagnation or blockage in a child.”

She says acupuncture can help keiki with colds, flu, fever, digestive, sleep disorders, skin disorders and asthma but can also work on building immunity and preventing future blocking of chi.

“It’s preventative medicine,” says Asuncion.

“You don’t need to wait for something to happen. If you are getting vaccinations and flu shots, it’s important to get your child to see an acupuncturist to get a treatment alongside of that. A treatment can really help them process those harsh pharmacopeia. We can treat that child’s body so it’s more accepting of the medicine and decrease the byproducts.”

Asuncion says the energetics in children is much more mobile, and their treatments run shorter in time. She also says a lot of time you need to treat mother and child together because what happens is if the child isn’t sleeping, that will affect the mother. And the reverse is also true: if the mother is stressed, that will definitely affect the child.

“Bringing your child in while young is a good time to address what your child could potentially have issues with as they age,” says

Asuncion. “While their bodies are young, their chi is easily movable. We work with the channel system but the treatment is lighter and they do not have to lay as long. We tap into their chi and organize the chaos brewing in the body. Anything from flicking to scrapping to little points of stimulation.”

Acupuncture can treat gastrointestinal issues and immunity; it can help pre- and post- dental work and address infertility issues; it can alleviate headaches and swelling; it can assist in circulation; it can treat thyroid, ulcer, fibromyalgia and diverticulitis, among other conditions. Right now, most medical insurance covering acupuncture will do so only for pain, headache and nausea related to pregnancy or chemotherapy. It will not allow for treatments related to other conditions. I asked Tice about that gap in coverage.

“You’re not going to find a strong lobby in acupuncture, we don’t have a lot of money,” he says. “More research is being done, but they claim to be an evidence-based model. There is something there that circulates in your body, besides blood and lymph. That potentially gets into new science conversations we don’t necessarily have answers for. And that is where the struggle comes from, we are using this word chi. Until that is proven, that chi exists.You can stick a needle here and see the brain light up over here and watch circulation change–we say the root of that is chi. That automatically makes us discredited. It always cracks me up when people call acupuncture an alternative medicine.

Mostly True Grit ‘The Revenant’ is overdone, but still stunning ★★★★★ Rated R / 156 Min.

L

eonardo Di Caprio stars as Hugh Glass, a fur trapper working in the wilderness during the 1800s.

With his son in tow, Glass is an essential member his hunting team and a master at tracking the path of any man or animal.

When Glass barely survives a bear attack, he’s left for dead by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), a colleague at odds with Glass over his half-Native American son. Although appearing nearly dead and partially buried alive by Fitzgerald, something in Glass pushes him to crawl out of his final resting place and pursue a path home.

Early on, I stopped believing in the story, which is partially based on truth but becomes so over the top, the “real” scenes become just as surreal as the dream sequences.

Alejandro G. Inarritu’s film is an often spellbinding work and couldn’t be more different than his prior work, the Best Picture winner Birdman. I found that film, as ambitious and impressively made as it was, to be a jumbled, smug and obvious commentary on the egos of ac-

tors and the profession of make-believe.

The Revenant is slightly less pretentious, though even more visually innovative.

The entire film isn’t a single long shot (the Birdman stunt Inarritu would be wise to never repeat) but has clearly been filmed under harsh conditions, using natural lighting and utilizing locations that are stunning to behold. While this is relentlessly downbeat and emotionally draining (akin to Inarritu’s earlier films, Babel and 21 Grams), Inarritu is once again joined

by Emmanuel Lubezki, the brilliant cinematographer whose work on The Tree of Life, Children of Men, Gravity, A Walk in the Clouds and The New World ranks him among cinema’s finest cameramen.

The Revenant is at its best when Innaritu and Lubezki are showing off. The scenes with the fur trappers and supporting characters are old hat, as the cast is attired like the Deliverance mountain men, intentionally mumbling their dialogue. When we’re with DiCaprio’s Glass, the film maintains its firm grip and stuns with one astonishing image after another.

scenes are the painstakingly realized setpieces, such as a pursuit on horseback, and Glass being swept down a roaring river. While the much discussed bear attack sequence is a jaw-dropper, so is the outrageous fate of Glass’ horse (one of several moments that made the audience gasp and cry out in surprise).

Hardy’s performance is reliably good, though the character isn’t quite as compelling and despicable enough to merit the bloodlust in Di Caprio’s character.

Yes, he’s bad but should have come across as evil incarnate. Glass is so obviously superior in his survival skills, resilience and intelligence, his pursuit of Fitzgerald doesn’t seem entirely necessary.

Does Di Caprio deserve to win an Oscar for his work here? Sure, though he deserved it even more for The Aviator, The

Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, Catch Me If You Can, This Boy’s Life and The Basketball Diaries. However you look at it, he’s overdue for Academy Award recognition.

This is an especially grueling film, with ample gore and bloodletting.

There’s also a rape, which seems unnecessary (the point of the scene would have been made without it). Inarritu is far more successful at evoking the dread and grime of the wild west than The Hateful Eight. This fine hybrid of western and survivalist adventure is a lot closer to The Grey than True Grit.

The Revenant is longer than it needs to be and offers as much bloodshed as entertainment value. If you’re going to see it, be sure to catch it on the big screen.

You’ll want its otherworldly visions to wash over you. ■
