BIG TURNOUT FOR WOMEN’S MARCH ON MAUI

SAFE-BACKED COUNCILMEMBERS STILL SCREWED ON COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS One of Maui County Council Chairperson Mike White’s surprising concessions in the wee hours of the Jan. 2-3 County Council organizational meeting was to back off his ruthless, vindictive restructuring of the panel’s many committees to zero out the voting power of four councilmembers: Alika Atay, Elle Cochran, Don Guzman and Kelly King. Their crime, of course, was being backed by the slow-growth, anti-GMO SAFE Action Fund, which is directly arrayed against the interests

But in a new statement released today, Hawaii Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui, says he’s not buying any of that. And he says he’ll introduce a bill next week to change the law on quiet title suits.

“Zuckerberg is using the same legal loophole that sugar barons have historically exploited to scoop thousands of acres of Hawaiian lands,” Ing said. “Zuckerberg’s actions may be legal and slightly more transparent, but it doesn’t make them right. We need to look at this issue through the eyes of the families affected. Here we have the world’s sixth richest individual, with a team of the world’s best lawyers, suing you, then asking you to make a deal. Obviously, no matter how expensive, you will lawyer up too. So in the end, you have a mainland billionaire exploiting our legal system, and bullying his way through local residents, all to build his beach playground. This is not the intent of the law.”

Ing lays partial blame for all this on the State of Hawaii because Kuleana Land title laws are so outdated and records are often hard to find.

By all accounts, the Women’s March on Maui on Saturday, Jan. 21 was a big success. At around 8am that morning, an organizer told the crowd assembled on the University of Hawaii Maui College lawn that an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 people had shown up for the Women’s March, one of hundreds that went off around the country today in response to Donald Trump becoming president of the United States.

“Show me what democracy looks like!” an organizer would shout at the crowd at one point. “This is what democracy looks like!” the crowd would shout back. Even in intermittent rain, the huge crowd walked slowly down Ka‘ahumanu Avenue, crossed the street in groups in front of the Queen Ka‘ahumunu Center, then slowly made their way back towards the college. It was a brief march, to be sure, but a cacophony of horns from passing cars filled the air.

Signs were humorous (“We Shall Overcomb”), celebratory (“Yes We DID!”) and aggressive (“This pussy GRABS BACK!”).

“This is the biggest crowd I’ve seen show up for a demonstration in 40 years,” one marcher told me.

That meeting took place on Monday, Jan. 16. Guess what! SAFE-backed candidates are still screwed. Sure, the idea of fivemember committees seems dead, but once again, SAFE candidates are in the minority of every single committee. So it goes.

Of course, Zuckerberg insists that there’s nothing unseemly or even unusual about his lawsuits.

“As with most transactions, the majority owners have the right to sell their land if they want, but we need to make sure smaller partial owners get paid for their fair share too,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post he made on the lawsuits. “In Hawaii, this is where it gets more complicated. As part of Hawaiian history, in the mid-1800s, small parcels were granted to families, which after generations might now be split among hundreds of descendants. There aren’t always clear records, and in many cases descendants who own 1/4% or 1% of a property don’t even know they are entitled to anything.

“To find all these partial owners so we can pay them their fair share, we filed what

“If Zuckerberg truly cared about Hawaiian culture, and these families, he would (1) let them hui together as a trust, rather than fighting them off one by one, then, (2) he would pay for and enter mediation to reach a fair deal without litigation,” Ing said in his statement. “My proposal is fair and will help address this and hundreds of other quiet title cases that are weighted too heavily for the plaintiff. It goes well beyond sympathy for Native Hawaiians, because it could happen to anyone. We must stop mainland billionaires from stacking money to tilt Hawaii’s legal system against local residents.”

Quality Over Consistency Dive into the local produce found at Upcountry Farmers Market

W

ith all of the organic and local movement, there are more options in our supermarkets than ever. But are the supermarkets really looking out for their consumers? I took a trip to the Upcountry Farmers Market with Katheryn Dahm of Choice Health Bar to speak with Joel Gil Coca of Coca Farms.

My thought was to reboot my thinking about organic fruits and veggies and what it really means to buy local. Dahm owns Choice Health Bar with Emily Kunz, and the two of them have created their own distribution network to get the fresh organic local fruits and vegetables to their Westside restaurant.

Katheryn tells me you have to start early here–the market starts at 7am sharp on Saturday morning, and competition is fierce. Since I’m already running late, Dahm tells me to park on the side road by the roundabout and walk in because parking gets tight. The weather is chilly, and I have a rain jacket on, but even though there’s drizzle, the weather can change in a heartbeat. Dahm also recommends layering when dressing for the market.

The market is bustling at 7:45am when I get there. There are lots of farmers and lots of tables of fruits and veggies, but also loads of prepared foods: fresh bread, jars of tangelo juice, local coffee, vegan cheese, raw crackers, local pickles, vegan sushi plates, handmade sea salts, local olive oil. I find

“In this age of social media you see a lot about ‘I’m a vegan, I support organic, I support local,’” says Dahm. “All the values are there.

What’s so ironic is that people aren’t willing to put their money where their mouth is. In social media you see this health food trend–there’s a lot more organic now, more health food places are opening, but is there integrity behind the trend? I want to believe that it is. Are you willing to buy a $15 smoothie because that’s what it takes to pay the farmer to stay in business, and for the customer to get an epic local organic product? Are we willing to finish that whole loop and be stoked about it? This farmers market gives me hope. Everyone is hungry and happy.

It’s definitely one of the best faces of the movement–the headlamp shoppers that are here at 6:30am before it even opens.”

Joel Coca, of Coca Farm agrees. His wife Marta does the set up.

“Marta is here a little before 5am and there are people already waiting in their cars here,” says Coca. “That is a good thing.”

Soon one of their regular customers chimes in. “If you want to get something fresh you have to start early! Everybody is here ready, pulling stuff from her car.”

“What I say, the Foodland commercial that says, ‘Eat fresh,’ it’s not really fresh,” says Coca.

“If you really want to eat fresh, the stuff I’m selling today was in the ground yesterday. If you

eat this lettuce in the next few days you’re going to have the full nutrients. If you eat it one month later, there is nothing there.

Only the fiber. It’s like if you eat this kale in the next day–guaranteed your body is going to like it. At the supermarket, if I bring it in Monday, you won’t get it until the next Monday. That is how they work.”

Coca produces his organic veggies and fruits with flavor and nutrients first on his list of priorities. That’s something you don’t really see or taste at the supermarkets.

“Actually the condition of organic produce makes a specific difference between conventional produce,” says Coca. “At a certain point everybody is doing organic but it’s not real because they’re practicing the conventional way of growing. The thing is people are still using the conventional approach to growing: water, water, water, fertilizer, fertilizer. That’s not what I call real organic because they are forcing the plant to grow. That’s not how to find the real flavor of the plant. But that’s what I started doing. I’ve been tasting the vegetables since 1996, seeing which ones have the best flavor in the plant, as I grow them. I’ve been thinking to run nutrition tests on the plants.

I’m positive my style of growing is going to be 99 percent better and have more nutrients over the conventional or organics grown in the conventional style. When you see the cel-

Coca then tells me how he grows corn.

“The conventional farmers water the corn every two days,” he says. “They like to see the plants very nice, the corn very big. But when you eat it, there’s not enough nutrients since they accelerate the plants. I grew the corn from University of Hawaii–they have the one called Number 9, Hawaiian Yellow. I got with them that I have to grow the corn in 75 days but I pull them in 90 days for the harvest. It’s 120 days to harvest them for seed. They accelerate the plant. When you eat it, you don’t feel it inside your mouth but it’s like I say, people forgot in their mind how to eat.”

For Coca, nutrient levels in organics done right make a huge difference, and taste better.

“The eggs I raised were tested,” says Coca. “They told me the eggs I grew were 100 percent nutrients compared with the ones coming from Tyson farms. Their eggs were 90 percent cholesterol and 10 percent nutrients for human beings. People don’t understand the point or don’t know what they are doing wrong. The thing I learned is to taste it. Then taste the other conventional style produce by my neighbor to compare.

That’s how I know I’m doing it the right way. Sometimes I don’t water for four days to make the produce stronger, and bring that

ery in the store, it’s big and yellow. Because the farmer fertilized every 15 days the way we are taught at school. If you do that, of course, it’s going to be big and grow faster. These smaller, dark green celery may look ugly but the taste is so incredible. But that’s another thing–people are losing the ability to taste. We don’t have that in our mouth anymore.”

Coca then has me taste some of the leaves off of the top of his celery. They zing with celery flavor. The stalks are smaller, but a vibrant green color rarely seen in the supermarket. There’s a definite difference in flavor. ”We brought our staff from the restaurant up to the farm to do tasting,” says Dahm. “Everyone has eaten so much corn in their life. Joel was plucking it off of his plants, and husking it right there and handing it out. Some people were saying, ‘I don’t even like corn.’ But once we were tasting it, the raw corn straight from the cob, it was like candy. We had to redefine our idea of corn because it wasn’t like anything you were used to tasting. It

He then busts open a basket of organic local strawberries for me to try.

“It’s like these strawberries,” Coca says.

“Have you ever tasted the real organic ones? Taste these. These we water every other day, and fertilize every five days to make them produce. According to University of Hawaii, we’re supposed to harvest about two to three pounds every other day from each plant. Sometimes I’m only harvesting two pieces from each plant. With conventional, we grow fast but it goes down in nutrient level quickly.”

The focus has sometimes forced restaurants and supermarkets into a false idea of seasons, providing consumers with what they want over what is available.

“The focus has been consistency over quality,” says Dahm. “Trying to force things to bloom when it’s not their season. I find that that’s what makes a lot of restaurants choose to import things. Like having orange Continued on page 11

understand why we don’t have it. Like the green beans–every single Saturday people come looking for green beans, or cucumber. I tell people it’s not the time to have it.You have to come during the season for it. We don’t even understand that concept anymore–that vegetables have seasons. We’re at the point of where we don’t think about what we’re eating.”

There’s also a discrepancy between the prices the farmers here can charge and competing with big box economies.

“People are shocked at what it costs for local organic,” says Dahm. “But we need to pay the farmers top dollar so they can reinvest it in the fields.You have to be willing to pay four to five times the cost for a case of something here as you would from the Mainland, and that’s bogus. That’s a critical flaw in our whole island produce ecosystem. It’s so much cheaper to get stuff from the Mainland for the people that are doing the bulk purchasing that our farmers here feel guilty about the price they have

to charge–and that’s even less than what they should be charging. But when you’re comparing it to the BS prices of bulk goods that come into the island from the Mainland, there’s no way to compete.You can get carrots for 70 cents a pound–juicy, big organic carrots from the Mainland. How’s the local farmer going to get $5 a pound for a juicy delicious carrot, which is what they need to make it make sense for them? No one’s going to pay six times the amount for a carrot just for a juice. Even places like Choice, where we’re really anal about it, we’re forced to make some really tough decisions. How do we justify that? The economy has to change on its heels, so people will say, ‘Yes I will pay six times as much for that carrot because I want that carrot.’”

Coca says he doesn’t let that discourage him, and that his bottom line is health, not dollars.

And the restaurant is like, we have orange juice on the menu, and they are a local based cafe or whatever, but there are a few weeks out of the year where there might be no orange juice.

People do not want to hear that you don’t have orange juice. But these restaurants menus are in such a way where they have to make compromises to their ethics because they want to provide a consistent product for their customer. But if you really want to embrace the local variety and what’s available you have to be willing to say, ‘There is no orange juice today. Today it’s star fruit juice.’ And it’s also about delivering that to the customers in a way that makes them feel psyched that it’s star fruit juice. But some businesses don’t know how to translate that. And people feel like they have to have their orange juice. So they’re going to get this crate of shitty Valencias from California that aren’t in line with their ethos, but they have to be like, let’s just pretend this didn’t happened this week. But I’m saying, just tell them there isn’t orange juice today.”

Coca says there’s a divide in people’s education about organic products and seasons.

“They are afraid to educate themselves,” says Coca. “They think we have to have a certain thing daily. When in my case, if I don’t have broccoli for six months, I don’t eat broccoli.

I don’t buy it from the store. Once I grow it and become used to the real taste of broccoli, I don’t buy it in the store. Many people don’t

are in business. So many farmers are coming, saying they have to do organic, but they don’t have a clue what it is for real life. That’s what turns everything upside down. The big corporations from USA go to Mexico and grow huge quantities, making it cheaper and easier. That’s affecting us. I went to Kula Produce and I offer them: if I harvest 5,000 pounds of broccoli, will they buy it? They laugh at me. They say they bring the whole container for 25 cents a pound. I said I don’t care about that, I’m asking if you’re willing to buy. Everything is about the money. The competition from outside the state is a problem. A lot of people don’t think Maui has the potential to grow all their own food and fresh produce. That perception is from the produce coming from California. That’s affecting the cost of production here, and the labor here to do it. It’s really hard to get the labor. Nobody wants to sacrifice for the good. The market, VIP, Morrad, Kula Produce–if they will say okay, we will buy local first, that would be a different story. We have the land. We could survive without help from the outside. But labor and sales, that’s the hard part.”

The Dragon’s Den For nearly three decades, Dr. Malik Cotter has brought eastern medicine to Makawao

n 1988, Makawao was just a sleepy country town. Paniolo, hippies and the occasional windsurfer from Paia would make their way into town along with the odd tourist, looking for the authentic Upcountry experience. One thing that hasn’t changed much since those days is the Dragon’s Den, Dr. Malik Cotter’s outpost for herbs and his natural medical practice.

You’ve probably spotted it while walking–it’s tucked up in the alley between some clothing boutiques and gift shops.

“I began studying herbs and food medicine as well as Chinese Medicine in the early 1970s,” says Cotter. “It all started with my interest in nature as the teacher, t’ai qi movement and helping people with their health and reaching their full potential.”

Cotter studied in Hawaii and the Mainland but his real education into eastern medicine happened in China.

“As soon as Americans were allowed in, I went to China,” says Cotter. “I completed the training of a traditional Chinese Medical Doctor at the Beijing Medical school and Chengdu Medical University, receiving an honorary professorship as well as a doctorate in Chinese medicine. In Chengdu, Sichuan China, I took on the traditional training of being a ‘grasshopper’–following my teacher’s instruction

and direction. I’m one of a few westerners to live, work and study in China with masters of medicine, meditation and the martial/internal arts. I also worked in hospitals and monasteries in North India, Tibet and Nepal.”

He decided to open his place in Makawao to share his knowledge and help folks with his natural and Chinese medicinal practice.

“After 28 years, I’m still here and the Dragon’s Den is still in its original location in Makawao,” says Cotter. “The Den

has turned into a health hub for the Maui community and people call and come in from all over the world. We sell Chinese and western herbs as well as other health supplies. Our focus is on organic plant-based medicines and herbals. Locally grown herbs and plants also make their way into the store when they are of high quality.”

I ask him what kind of person benefits from from his medicine.

“An ideal client is someone who sincerely

wants high-level health, will do what it takes, has the patience to stay the course and wishes to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” says Cotter. “People follow the medical model that they primarily believe in. An integration of the western conventional medical model with the now blended western and Oriental natural health medical model appears to work best these days.”

Cotter has become known for creating his own medicines that are available to the public.

“The Dragon’s Den carries a number of signature items of proprietary blends of mine,” says Cotter. “A few of these items include the ‘Original Green Drink,’ which is one of the Dragon’s Den’s most popular items. 'Silence' Once again, Martin Scorsese delivers a masterpiece ★★★★★ Rated R / 161 Min.

F

or decades, there were two passion projects Martin Scorsese had been striving to make. His long discussed, bucket list films had been Gangs of New York, which he made in 2002, and finally, Silence.

Harrowing, intelligent and rewarding overall, Scorsese’s Silence is a tough sit but unquestionably one of the filmmaker’s greatest films.

In the early 1600’s, two Portuguese Jesuit priests, Rodrigues and Garrpe (played by Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver), are sent to Japan to locate Ferreira, their mentor (played

by Liam Neeson). The priests are aware of the great danger involved, as practicing Christianity was Japan is considered a crime, punishable by death. Also, they have no way of knowing whether the man they seek is still alive.

It’s is astonishing to consider that Scorsese’ previous film was The Wolf of Wall Street, which is as different from this movie as Star Wars is to The Shawshank Redemption. Film buffs may recognize that, at times, Scorsese is paying visual homage to

Akira Kurosawa, Roberto Rossellini, Yasujiro Ozu and Terrence Malick. The filmmaker is openly dealing with themes and topics that are under the surface in his more mainstream movies but have always been a part of his work. The level of ambition and artistic accomplishment here is amazing. Longtime fans of the director will note that he’s made another vastly unexpected, out-of-left field masterpiece on par with his equally dissimilar Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, After Hours, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence and Kundun.

Scorsese has made a deeply religious film that honors the complexity of the subject matter by not going down easy in pat sermonizing. Both faith-based and atheist audiences will have lots to discuss afterwards, though the response will likely be divisive. I was challenged and intrigued by the film’s examination of living and dying by faith, what it means to be a missionary and the cost of both declaring and denying one’s faith.

Shot in Taiwan, the cinematography captures exotic locales but never makes the imagery pretty; the look of the film compliments the somber tone. Garfield and Driver gives re-

markable, go-for-broke performances, but its Neeson’s work that really knocked me out. Of the large Japanese ensemble, I’ll never forget Yosuke Kobuzuka as the Judas-like Kichijiro and Issei Ogata as “The Inquisitor.”

Those who are big fans of Scorsese’ gangster films and are nonchalant about the bloodshed in his films may, nevertheless, find the violence here shocking. The brutality depicted is intimate and a sense of dread fills many scenes. Although Silence moves briskly for a nearly three-hour movie, the scenes of torture and anguish will make it a challenge. Yet, that’s also the point, as Scorsese intends to put his audience through the ringer and allow the questions he raises to weigh on us as it does his protagonist.

An argument will likely be made that Scorsese has demonized the Japanese charac-

ters but that isn’t the case. While they are the “villains” on a surface level, the “Inquisitor” and his soldiers are articulate and thoughtful about what they do.

By the film’s end, I was exhausted and drained but found Silence thoroughly engrossing. There were other great films released in 2016 but this one is an easy pick for the best of its year. What gives this movie the greatest edge over its competition is its closing image. I won’t spoil it, but the last shot Scorsese leaves us with it left me moved and re-thinking many earlier scenes. The master filmmaker is both celebrating and questioning his faith, honing his passion for cinema to create a deeply personal and meaningful work. All of Scorsese’ films are entertaining and made with great skill but this one, like his best, aches with purpose and feeling. ■

Eventually, she guessed that he was responding to tidal forces, even though he was miles from any ocean. I thought of this essay when contemplating you, Pisces, because your internal rhythms, especially this week, are just as inexplicable–perhaps to you as much as to the rest of us. Trust them anyway; they are responding to something bigger than yourself. You don’t need to explain them, just accommodate them.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Enlist your nearest and dearest to help you identify the five main things holding you back. Now is a good time to unlearn the habits and thought patterns that keep these shit blockades in play. This isn’t something you can do overnight, although you ought to start today. It might not even be clear what you can do to knock those barriers down for good. Ask for help. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

According to Mayan astrology, their Long Count calendar ended in 2012, and we entered a new era at that time. Mayans believed that during the next Long Count our lives would become unrecognizably different. I doubt a rational Taurus would be freaked by ancient prophecies. Nevertheless it’s hard to deny that reality does look a bit different these days. Passively observing all these changes, however, isn’t the solution. I view this as an opportunity to shape what our future will look like, now, while it’s still hopefully malleable. Don’t waste this time– visualize what you want your world to look like, and start doing what you can to make your dreams come true.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Geminis are hardly immune to codependency. But you’ll rarely hear one bragging about their soulmate, or making theatrical avowals of eternal love. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

As part of my process to enact my 38 New Year’s resolutions, I’m attempting to become more of a morning person. Naturally, after many years of being a total night owl, I’m encountering heaps of internal resistance. I’m willing to give this venture a few months before I leap to the unlikely conclusion that this new schedule simply doesn’t work for me. You, too, will need to be persistent and less thin-skinned when trying to bring about certain changes in your life. Don’t be daunted by your clever subconscious attempts at self-sabotage, which are likely to take many forms. Doggedness will be rewarded.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Buddhism is tricky for Leos. It’s those crazy-ass supersized egos of yours. While you can recognize how your ego is perhaps keeping you from enlightenment

or oneness with the universe, it’s hard to shake how it’s also a big source of your power. It’s where all that shine comes from. Isn’t it? I’m not so sure. Of course, believing you’re the shit can gift you with heaps of attractive confidence. But isn’t there a way you can be confident while acknowledging that you’re–when viewed from a more objective standpoint–fairly insignificant? It’s freeing, in a way–which is, naturally, another fantastic source of shine.

See where I’m going here? Stop reinforcing your flaws. You have the raw material with which to excel.

Your task this week, and in the weeks to come: Enjoy the honeymoon period with whatever’s new in your life–be it person, job, or new surroundings–but concentrate on stretching out and milking the stage that comes right after, because that’s when the really good shit goes down.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Capricorns believe in insurance. It’s not that you’re necessarily negative by default–although many of you are.

It’s that you believe in taking precautions. “Just in case,” as an idea, makes perfect sense to you, and you’re probably right in believing in it. But applying this philosophy all across the board simply doesn’t work, and trying can cause some serious havoc. Love, for instance, can’t be insured. It’s a leap of faith with no real safety net. There are a few instances in your imminent future when you won’t be able to make everything safe and secure ahead of time. You’ll just have to run, close your eyes, and jump.
