'This Woman's Story Is As Good As It Gets'

While that final name may not be as well known as those of the famed primate observers, Dr. Denise Herzing certainly deserves her place in that respected triumvirate of behavioral biologists. Now in her fourth decade of studying wild cetacean behavior–specifically spotted dolphins in the Bahamas–Herzing’s work went viral after a 2013 TED Talk she gave on her efforts to communicate with them via an underwater computer. Herzing will discuss her latest research Friday, Feb. 24 at Whale Trust Maui’s 11th annual Whale Tales event

at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua.

“Denise Herzing’s study of wild dolphins is inspirational,” says longtime friend Flip Nicklin, Whale Trust co-founder and National Geographic photographer.

“To study wild cetaceans, face-to-face, in the wild, in the water and to continue the work for decades is the stuff of dreams for future marine biologists, conservationists and even photographers. This woman’s story is as good as it gets.”

Since 1985, Herzing has spent four months each summer and thousands of hours in the water studying dolphin culture and behavior in the research-friendly crystalline waters near the Bahamas. She has

now collected data on three generations of the same pods and has offered up groundbreaking observations on their behavior. A dolphin’s brain-to-body weight is second only to humans and Herzing has catalogued their various communication methods: body language, touch and–most significantly–sound. She learned how dolphins identified themselves and each other using signature “whistles” and how they use echolocation, “buzzes” and “pulse bursts” to engage in a number of social activities.

As she wrote in her 2011 book, Dolphin Diaries: My 25 Years with Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas, “An average spotted dolphin travels around 10 to 20 miles a day, has a large network of friends and family and invests years in teaching young dolphins how to survive. Dolphins teach their young complex skills ranging from feeding, babysitting and negotiating the fine lines of dolphin behavior.”

That research has left her deeply invested in the species and its survival–and beyond. “What hits home is that dolphins are a community and culture unto themselves,” Herzing told MauiTime.

“It makes me perceive many animals as unique and possessing precious cultures, but [humans] still monitor them as stocks or numbers. They are individual beings with unique cultures. To lose them would be species genocide.”

After years spent identifying various family groups and individuals through her nonprofit Wild Dolphin Project, Herzing watched dolphins mimic researchers’ vocal sounds and play dolphin games with them–such as “keep away” with pieces of seaweed. She decided to move to the next phase of her research: taking what she had learned about the language of dolphins

and trying to bridge the communication gap with the community of dolphins she had been studying.

In her TED Talk she posited, “Imagine what it would be like to really understand the mind of another intelligent species on the planet,” as she highlighted her research team’s early attempts at two-way communication using an underwater keyboard. With it, her team played back acoustic signals: the whistles that dolphins use to identify themselves as well as the ones researchers invented for themselves.

The team also developed dolphin-friendly sounds corresponding to toys that dolphins liked to play with, such as pieces of rope, scarves and seaweed. The results were rudimentary, but promising. “We had opened a window at least,” she wrote in her book.

Herzing laughed ruefully about the repercussions of her TED talk, which was translated by a lot of non-scientifically focused media into “there’s a woman out there talking to dolphins.”

“Unfortunately a lot of it has been really miscommunicated and that’s so frustrating,” she said. “It’s such a sensitive area of work because of the potential for exaggeration.”

Herzing said that the past few years have been spent refining her team’s technology which has resulted in a new underwater computer she described as “bigger, better, faster and smarter.” She’ll present an update in her talk at 2:15pm Friday. Herzing also will be aboard one of the whale watches donated by local companies to benefit whale research in Hawaii. WILL REP. GABBARD’S TRIP TO SYRIA HURT HER POPULARITY?

MAYOR ARAKAWA DENOUNCES SACRED ROCKS So on the morning of Friday, Feb. 17, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa went on Hawaii News Now for an “Ask the Mayor” feature. The first question was in regards to the the destruction of rocks that native Hawaiians consider sacred during the recent cleanup of Iao Valley–an act that county Communications Director Rod Antone already apologized for. But Arakawa wasn’t feeling so generous.

“It’s very simple,” Arakawa said.

“There’s no such thing as sacred rocks.

First of all, the monarchy, starting with Kamehameha, his lineage, declared Christianity the religion of Hawaii. In Christianity, if I remember the Ten Commandments correctly, ‘Thou shall have no false God before me’. There are no sacred rocks in that religion. We have a group of people that are political wannabes that ran for political office the last time, and they’re trying to make an issue out of nothing. During an emergency situation where people’s lives are endangered, we have to do what we have to do.”

In a word, wow. Let’s leave aside the fact that Arakawa’s argument is condescending, patriarchal and wildly illogical (I’m

sorry, but the county is still a Christian kingdom?) and just look at it in raw political terms. Sure, he’s throwing gasoline on a fire for no good reason–needlessly enraging native Hawaiian anger against him–but what does he have to lose? His term as mayor is up in 2018, and then he’ll undoubtedly retire. Why wait until he’s out of office to be that cranky old guy who yells at kids who stray across his lawn?

He can’t be tossed out for being a wiseass, the Maui County Council has already been dicking him around for years and now we have a new blowhard to denounce on Facebook. So where’s the downside to all this?

Speaking of Hawaii News Now, they posted a very interesting story on Feb. 15 about U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–2nd District, and her recent fact-finding trip to Syria, where she met twice with dictator Bashar al-Assad. The story is hooked to statements from Muslim Association of Hawaii chairperson Hakim Ouansafi, who is very critical of Gabbard’s trip.

“It is absolutely no different than saying we want to help the victims of the Holocaust, and then you go and meet with Hitler twice,” Ouansafi said in the story.

“Truly, this will go in history as a black mark in her record.”

While I completely agree with the assertion, I also doubt it will do any political damage to Gabbard. See, Gabbard is very popular in Hawaii (and around the country, as you’ll see in a moment). During the 2016 election, she decisively beat back her challengers (Gabbard won 77.6 percent of the vote in the primary and 76.2 percent during the general).

But when reader recently asked me whether Gabbard’s Syria trip had hurt her popularity, I could only say that I had no idea (there is little to no polling done here, especially in non-election years). So I posed the question to Colin Moore, UH Manoa professor of political science and longtime observer of Hawaii elections.

“It’s hard to know because there’s no polling data, so there’s no way to really do any analysis,” Moore said. “My guess is that she’s still quite popular and that most voters either don’t know or don’t care about her trip to Syria. Her base is an unusual mix of veterans and progressives. My guess is that not all of them were happy about the Syria trip, but they probably still support her.”

Moore is just speculating, but I have no argument with his analysis. What’s more, when you look at her campaign contributions, it’s easy to wonder whether it would make a difference to Gabbard’s election chances even if her trip (or anything else) made her unpopular with her constituents.

That’s because Gabbard raises the vast majority of her campaign money from

political action committees and individuals located outside of the 2nd District (and Hawaii itself, as it turns out). According to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP), an astonishing 90 percent of her campaign contributions during the 2016 election came from outside her district. And it’s not like she was just pulling in a lot of Honolulu money, either–during the election, just 27 percent of Gabbard’s campaign contributions came from Hawaii. The rest came in from the Mainland (much of it from California, Texas and Massachusetts).

The same was true during the 2014 election, the CRP noted (during that year, 91 percent of her campaign contributions came from outside her district and 70 percent arrived from some state other than Hawaii).

This is not normal–even for Hawaii.

To see that we need only check on the campaign contributions of Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, D–1st District. During the 2016 election, the CRP noted, 62 percent of her campaign contributions came from within the 1st District. What’s more, 79 percent of her contributions came from within Hawaii.

We can also look at the data from Gabbard’s direct predecessor, though the CRP only has state percentages for that race. During the 2010 election, Mazie Hirono (who is now a U.S. Senator) won reelection to the 2nd District seat with 74 percent of her contributions coming from within Hawaii.

Information like this should make 2nd District voters nervous. But given Moore’s earlier analysis, I doubt it will happen.

PERSONAL AND PUBLIC And now for something fun: Steven Greenhut, a very intelligent and conscientious writer–and one of my former editors from my time in California–will be on Maui this weekend to do a talk for the Grassroot Institute about public employee unions and pensions. “County public employees in the state of Hawaii make among the highest wages in the nation, even after adjusted for Hawaii’s high cost of living,” states the lecture notice.

“Steven Greenhut is the author of Plunder!

How public employee unions are raiding treasuries, controlling our lives and bankrupting the nation. He will open the books on police and fire departments across the country, and show that the problems of pension spiking, overtime, and Cadillac benefits are also happening in Hawaii.”

Seriously, this will be a good talk. Greenhut will speak at 11:30am on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Maui Country Club (48 Nonohe Pl., Paia). The cost is $20, and it includes lunch. The Lahaina Restoration Foundation will be awarding a total of $35,000 in scholarships to Lahainaluna High School seniors and alumni at the end of April.

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s Scholarship Committee will award 10 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each and one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to qualifying seniors who will graduate from Lahainaluna High School in 2017. Scholarship eligibility requirements include being accepted into an accredited two- or four-year college, trade school or university–and writing an essay.

Additionally, five scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each and one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to currently enrolled full-time college, trade school or university students in 2017. Eligibility for these scholarships includes being an alumnus of Lahainaluna High School and writing an essay.

Wrote Marneweck, “I think my record for waiting for a rhino to poo was 7 1/2 hours.” Conclusion: Rhinos use feces to send distinct social signals on genetically compatible herds, mating access and predator dangers.

THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS Settlement of a class-action lawsuit against a group of dairy co-ops was announced in January with milk producers agreeing to pay $52 million on charges they had conspired to fix the dairy supply for years to get top-dollar prices. Among the producers’ primary tactics, allegedly, was using what the industry calls “herd retirement,” which is “retirement” only in the sense that 500,000 healthy young cows were slaughtered–just to drive up prices by eliminating otherwise-available milk. The $52 million will be for consumers in 15 states and Washington, D.C.

Doctors say that finding rogue brain cells in ovaries is not that uncommon, but that an already-organized brain, capable of transmitting electric impulses, is almost unheard-of.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATOR Doughnut lovers have legitimately mused for years how U.S. law could condemn, say, marijuana, yet permit Krispy Kreme to openly sell its seemingly addictive sugary delights on America’s streets. Sonia Garcia, 51, realized a while back that residents of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, so much needed Krispy Kreme fixes that she earns a handsome living running a black market from El Paso, Texas, bringing in 40 boxes at a time and re-selling from the trunk of her car at a 60 percent markup, pointing out to a Los Angeles Times reporter in January that her trafficking has already put one son through engineering school. (Mexico City now has Krispy Kremes, but apparently the company’s distribution system cannot yet vanquish Sonia Garcia’s car.)

Rutgers University Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, responding to the NCAA’s announcement of violations against the school’s sports programs (including failure to penalize 16 football players who tested positive for drugs), told the Asbury Park Press in January that he would immediately dismiss from teams any player testing positive for hard drugs–upon the fourth violation (if for marijuana only, upon the fifth). And in January, the Russian parliament voted 380 to 3 to amend its assault law to allow a spouse one punishment-by“ticketing” (i.e., not criminal) for domestic violence against his partner–provided the bodily harm was not “substantial” and that it happens no more than once a year.

Reporting from Mbyo, Rwanda, in January on the success of a “reconciliation” program following the country’s bloody genocidal wars, London’s The Guardian found, for example, Laurencia Niyogira living peacefully and forgivingly alongside neighbor Tasian Nkundiye–even though, 22 years ago, Nkundiye murdered Niyogira’s entire family (except for her and her siblings, left barely alive). (Over a 100-day span in 1994, 800,000 ethnic Tutsis were systematically slaughtered by Hutus.) A survey by the country’s national unity commission showed that 92 percent of Rwandans have come to accept reconciliation.

Koa Johnson KoJo Couture I enjoy being a part of my brides special day. I design couture and custom wedding garments, all aspects of wardrobe for a bridal party. I love dressing not only the bride but also all the groomsmen and bridesmaids as well so that they are able to compliment the bride on her special day. I wanted to make sure that the pieces I created for the annual MauiTime Wedding Guide were very non-traditional. I desired a fashion edge to it but still needed to have that bridal feel. The cover look was a twopiece wedding gown and bodysuit with a tulle skirt and train. The second look was an ivory plunging neckline jumpsuit with a cape. The last look I designed is a sheer white mesh mermaid gown with beaded lace appliqué. My inspiration is introduce a new kind of bridal to the newly engaged so that they can have something very different for their wedding or be inspired to be different. Anna and Florian fell in love at the European Forum Alpbach, a Festival of Ideas held in Austria each summer. At the time Anna was visiting a friend and Florian was working for BMW at the convention. Anna was lunching alone, and he asked if he could join her. A few months later Florian flew halfway around the world for two days to their family vacation in Maui just to tell his parents he had found the one. Florian proposed on a summer stroll while they were visiting his family home in the Bavarian Alps.

Florian’s dad, Georg Bartz, says he pushed for a beach ceremony at Mama’s Fish House with Rev. Laki coordinated by Vicki Habib of Elegant Island Weddings. During the the ring exchange two white birds flew overhead, and the ocean filled with sea turtles for the ceremony. The family lunched at Mama’s in celebration and the honeymoon continued in Ka‘anapali.

Tanya and Khoi found love in the library at the University of Minnesota when they were both students. They married in a traditional Vietnamese wedding ceremony, and a United Church of Christ ceremony as well. But they knew they would renew their vows on their 10th wedding anniversary and have the destination wedding that they always wanted. Tanya says she never cried at her first wedding, but when she recited her vows the second time around “all of the last 10 years went rushing through my head of the ‘better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health’ moments that we have had in our years of marriage. I couldn’t help but have a tear and I had a hard time saying them again without crying tears of joy.

Then, my husband, very kindly wiped away my tears. It is a very special moment I will never forget.” They got remarried on Ulua Beach in a small lei exchange ceremony with their two children as flower and ring bearer coordinated by Peggy Temple of Maui Aloha Weddings.

Leah and Alan Alves had a hot and stormy romance that started with his friend chatting her up at a Top Shelf Restaurant in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Alan owns Lighthouse Masonry with his brother, and Leah was a student of social work at the time. She says they were both set in their ways, and have a lot of social and political differences, but love prevailed. Leah says she wasn’t 100 percent serious when she asked Alan to marry her on Valentine’s Day last year, but he said yes. They had an intimate wedding with just the two of them at the Royal Lahaina Resort.

Kira Carlton coordinated the wedding by the ocean. Leah walked down the aisle in a white dress while “If We’re Honest” by Francesca Battistelli played. She says the way Alan looked and smiled at her at that moment told her she was a lucky woman.

Mary and Josh got married on the beach on Kapalua, with the bride in a swimsuit and sheer pareo and the groom in swim trunks. Mary says they wanted nothing more than comfort, their feet planted in the sand. The relationship blossomed for seven years. During their first visit to Oahu, Josh waved Mary over to look at something while they were snorkeling. It was a ring. She may have choked on water with surprise, but said yes. Peggy Temple of Maui Aloha Weddings coordinated the intimate ceremony for two performed by Carl Robilotta.

Dinner that night was at Merriman’s, and they spent their honeymoon at the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas. The sweetest moment of the ceremony was their vows.

Matt Damon Vs. The Lizard Monsters ‘The Great Wall’ is spectacularly awful ★★★★★

goes easily back to Allan Quartermain, not only because it instigated this journey that I love so much but because seeing and enjoying it as B-movie trash was a lot like my experience with The Great Wall.

Here is a gigantic epic, filmed in China, starring Matt Damon as an 11th century warrior who helps the Chinese military protect the Great Wall. Allow me to be more specific: Damon, sporting long, Fabio-like hair and an on-again/off-again, vaguely Minnesotan accent, aides Chinese warriors as they protect the Great Wall of China from an infestation of giant lizard monsters. I was baffled when I discovered that this turkey is a massive blockbuster overseas and that it’s been directed by the great Zhang Yimou.

Damon has made ambitious movies that didn’t work out before but this is, bar none, the most absurd role and unfortunate movie choice of his career. The problem isn’t that Damon in the lead is a case of “whitewashing” (as early criticism declared) but that he’s wrong for the part and embarrasses himself. If Jimmy Kimmel is looking for further material to mock his faux late night nemesis, look no further.

he first movie I ever reviewed was Allan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold, a bad Indiana Jones rip-off that starred Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone (poor substitutes for Harrison Ford and Karen Allen). I was 10 and loved the movie, despite its abundant cheesiness, horrible plotting, horrible acting... basically, its horrible everything. As my father drove us home from the movie theater, I exclaimed excitedly how much I loved the movie. My father interjected with, “How about when we get home, you write a movie review about it?” Once I got home, I sat down at my desk and wrote my first film critique. From that day on, I reviewed every single movie I watch.

As I sit here and type this, I’m celebrating my 40th birthday, which means I’ve been writing film reviews (in varying forms ranging from a local hand-out, to a college paper columnist and as a professional member of the film reviewing press) for 30 years. I love being a movie critic. My mind

Hey Damon, the big lizard war is behind you

Yimou once made To Live, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero and (my favorite) House of Flying Daggers. His gift at staging complicated action sequences and large scale pageantry remains strong but he’s defeated by a dopey script, overflowing with clunky one-liners. There’s lots of disjointed editing, making many scenes feel pared down from a longer cut.

How silly is this movie? Imagine a circus clown trying to swat a fly with a rubber chicken, while riding a unicycle as “Row Row Row Your Boat” plays. It’s that kind of silly, resulting in the kind of I-can’t-believeI’m-really-watching-this spectacle that is worth it for bad movie lovers.

As an action movie, The Great Wall moves well and has lots of cool Damon-versus-

dragon battle scenes. The CGI is well-done but sometimes overly obvious and cartoonish. It will work best for kids and adults who’ve never seen Dragonslayer or Reign of Fire. As snicker-worthy dragon flicks go, this one is equal to Dungeons & Dragons.

It appears that lavish fantasy stinkers come out this time of year, following the visionary but laughable Jupiter Ascending and Gods of Egypt. I enjoyed those movies for their undeniable entertainment value but cannot deny nor forgive how awful they were. I feel the same way about The Great Wall, which works and fails on the same level as Allan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold. Both movies are colossally stupid.

Yet, I laughed so hard and smiled so wide, I’m grateful they exist. ■
