Intelligence. Compassion. Ambition. Determination. These are not words generally used to describe Gordon L. “Gordo” Bisbee, a 37-year-old divorcee who makes a pretty mediocre living as a door-to-door spoon salesman. Generally considered slovenly, craven and uncommonly ignorant by neighbors, coworkers and even strangers who pass him on the street, Bisbee hasn’t exactly had a good life, much less a good year. But this year, 2006, that’s all going to change. Because in 2006, Gordo Bisbee will make a difference. Will it be in the field of medicine? Science? Education? I had no clue. But I decided to find out. With the help of an IRS field agent who was coincidentally also seeking Bisbee to find out why he hadn’t paid income taxes since 1998, I located Bisbee’s home address. After tailing him for a while as he made his spoon rounds, I cornered Bisbee and asked him what difference he was going to make in 2006. “Excuse me?” Bisbee asked, shaking the dirt off his pants leg he got a few moments earlier when a prospective spoon customer had kicked him off his front doorstep. “Get out of my face, you crazy fool. Can’t you see I’m busy?” Perhaps because of modesty, Bisbee was, at first, hesitant to speak. But I persisted, asking him if he was going to volunteer his time to assist children with learning disabilities, or perhaps try to donate a large quantity of blood throughout the year.

Bisbee just stood there for a while, saying nothing. I thought he was overcome with emotion at the thought of getting publicity for actions he was planning to keep to himself. Then he reached into his sample case, pulled out a large soup spoon and hit me with it. Then again. Soon he was beating me liberally about the head and shoulders. I was about to alter my line of questioning and ask Bisbee why he was beating me liberally about the head and shoulders with a soup spoon when IRS Agent Rodriguez and two

other individuals (I was later told they were with the FBI) jumped out of a van parked across the street, ran over and knocked Bisbee to the ground. As they were cuffing him, Bisbee began frothing at the mouth and kicking in my general direction. “Fink!” Bisbee yelled at me as they dragged him over to the van, one of the agents methodically reading him his rights. “You dirty fink! This is all your fault!” Sighing as the van drove off, I realized that people like Bisbee—people who will make a difference—are indeed a rare breed. They truly serve as examples to us all. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com Bravo to the big guy I saw the other morning who was pushing a keiki in a stroller down the middle of Haiku Road around a 20-mph blind curve. You must live nearby, but that should have meant that you were far less likely than someone who didn’t live nearby to do something so phenomenally stupid. Haven’t you noticed how many crazy dudes careen their four-by-fours around that same corner? I don’t know, maybe you were trying to make the point that roads ought to be safe for pedestrians. as the personal embodiment of the state, with “inherent” powers. For example, the Nazi “führer principle,” in which the head of state was answerable to no one and the legislative and judicial branches of governments were reduced to rubber stamps, required Hitler to assign himself inherent powers. Bush and Gonzales’ interpretation of their roles is alien, un-American. Do they understand our system of government? Or are they trying to change it to something more “efficient”—something closer to authoritarian state led by a strongman, or even outright fascism?

Cunning Lingle real Verizon guy too. But then, last week, Bush also claimed the right to spy within the United States. Despite Congressional denials Bush said the resolution that authorized him to use force to go after the perpetrators behind 9/11—which he used to invade Afghanistan—also gave him the right to listen in on Greenpeace and infiltrate a PETA seminar on veganism (yes, really). Attorney General and torture aficionado Alberto R. Gonzales cited the president’s “inherent power as commander in chief.” Actually, as Peter Irons documents in his outstanding War Powers: How the Imperial Presidency Hijacked the Constitution, the Founding Fathers never intended for the “commander in chief” to have any powers beyond ordering troops to repel an invasion force. As everyone understood in 1787, the title was strictly ceremonial. A president can’t declare war, much less violate our privacy, based on his commander-in-chief “authority.” Officials of a democratic republic derive their power and authority from law. As servants of the people, they can’t do anything unless it’s specifically authorized by law or judicial interpretations thereof. Only in authoritarian and totalitarian regimes may a legal theory be created that imbues the leader,

Civil libertarians relaxed when, in September 2003, Republicans bowed to public outcry and cancelled Total Information Awareness. TIA was a covert “data mining” operation run out of the Pentagon by creepy Iran-Contra figure John Poindexter. Bush Administration marketing mavens had tried to dress up the sinister “dataveillance” spook squad— first by changing TIA to Terrorism Information Awareness, then to the Information Awareness Office—to no avail. “But,” wondered the Electronic Frontier Foundation watchdog group a month after Congress cut its funding, “is TIA truly dead?” At the time I bet “no.” Once a regime has revealed a predilection for spying on its own people, the histories of East Germany and Richard Nixon teach us, they never quit voluntarily. The cyclical clicks that appeared on my phone line after 9/11 corroborated my belief that federal spy agencies were using the War on Terrorism as a pretext for harassing their real enemies: liberals and others who criticized their policies. As did the phony Verizon employee tearing out of my building’s basement, leaving the phone switching box open, when I demanded to see his identification. He drove away in an unmarked van. So I was barely surprised to hear the big news that Bush had ordered the National Security Agency, FBI and CIA to tap the phones and emails of such dangerously subversive radical Islamist antiAmerican terrorist groups as Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the American Indian Movement and the Catholic Workers, without bothering to apply for a warrant. “The Catholic Workers advocated peace with a Christian and semi-communistic ideology,” an agent wrote in an FBI dossier, a man sadly unaware of the passings of J. Edgar Hoover and the Soviet Union. The return of brazen Nixon-style domestic eavesdropping—it undoubtedly occurred under presidents from Ford to Clinton, though on a smaller, more discreet scale—indicates that the White House is flipping ahead to the next page in its Hitler playbook, the part about exploiting a state of perpetual war to stifle internal dissent on a vast scale. “As part of the program approved by President Bush for domestic surveillance without warrants,” The New York Times reports, “the NSA has gained the cooperation of American telecommunications companies to obtain backdoor access to streams of domestic and international communications.” Maybe I should worry about the

What Linda Lingle said in a Sept. 13, 2002 Honolulu Advertiser was her “One Big Idea” for her gubernatorial campaign: “I think the most important is to get an [independent] financial audit of the books of the state of Hawai’i and then to—based on what we learned—press forward with performancebased budgeting that measures results.”

What she didn’t say: It’s now more than four years after Lingle’s heady campaign promise, and state Auditor Marian Higa has just announced that her audit of the Lingle Administration has found 934 “unauthorized” positions within the executive branch, according to the Dec. 28, 2005 Advertiser. These positions, which bypassed the legislature but still cost the state $30 million, stem from what the paper calls a very “liberal interpretation” of the word “exempt,” which is state hiring-speak for giving latitude to the governor’s office to move people around government for special or temporary work. State budget officials say it’s all legal because the governor needs “flexibility” to run things “efficiently,” but that doesn’t explain why Lingle felt the need to fatten the state government so much in the first place. -Anthony Pignataro

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, DEC. 28 So Maui County Councilman Dain Kane doesn’t have to do any jail time for his little DUI adventure in November on Kauai. He has to pay $652 in fines and fees, but he gets to stay out of the slammer. What can I say—this is what happens when you plead the fifth. Get it? The fifth? See, he was drunk and so when he got to court… How could you not find this stuff hilarious? Kane’s a public official who helps make county laws—a potential mayoral candidate, really—and he committed a crime! And it’s a real crime, not just one of those super-political crimes that only powerful officials can possibly commit. I mean, those are bad, too: look at the mayhem President George W. Bush is causing because he decided that simply because he’s president he didn’t have to obey the law requiring government officials to get a court warrant before engaging in electronic espionage of U.S. citizens. That’s jacked up, but it’s not like you or I could go out and break that law. I mean, not anytime soon. But with Kane, he broke a law that only requires someone to be stupid and get behind the wheel while drunk. And that is funny. Oh, and it helps that Kane didn’t hurt or kill anyone either.

THURSDAY, DEC. 29 Went to see Syriana tonight with my buddy Steve. Everything went well, until we got to the Maui Mall box office and saw that Syriana—a complex Steven Soderbergh picture about oil politics, geo-strategy and espionage that’s been out a few weeks—was sold out. Theron flick where she dresses in black spandex and kills people in favor of a gritty look at U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. The night wasn’t a total loss—we ended up having dinner at the Ale House, where a 62-year-old Kahului local guy who looked 42 told us the key to staying young is a steady stream of young chicks and booze. Needless to say, we drank to that.

FRIDAY, DEC. 30 Bad news for anyone who runs one of those ridiculously wealthy credit card companies: Hawai’i bankruptcies are really high this year, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser. Well, maybe it’s bad—it could just be that the glorious Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 kind of spiked the number of personal bankruptcies before it went into effect in October. See, that month saw 1,463 bankruptcies statewide, but just 14 in November. So it’s a success! And by success, I mean that it makes it all but impossible for normal working people to declare personal bankruptcy. See, this has been the credit cart company’s wet dream for years, and President Bush was more than happy to make it come true. They couldn’t exactly call their bill the “Squeeze Working People and Credit Industry Protection Act of 2005,” so they just went with something a little softer and misleading. Trust me, this kind of stuff happens all the time. Anyway, the important thing is that Bush’s No Corporation Left Behind plan is working.

SATURDAY, DEC. 31 Speaking of giving the big guys what they want, the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Agriculture says that department isn’t doing as much as it could to keep an eye on biotech companies and the field tests they’re conducting on Genetically

Today the Advertiser says “exotic” mortgages involving adjustable-rate loans and interest-only payments are really getting hot. But before you say “housing bubble,” just listen to what outgoing Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said about them back in June: “To be sure, these financing vehicles have their appropriate uses,” said Greenspan, who I think is the only guy on the planet who uses the phrase “financing vehicle.” “But some households may be employing these instruments to purchase homes that would otherwise be unaffordable and consequently their use could be adding pressures in the housing market.” See? Nothing to worry about. Well, as long as rates stay where they are and buyer incomes rise… Oh yeah, we’re doomed.

TUESDAY, JAN. 3

Modified Organisms (GMOs). “Current [USDA] regulations, policies and procedures do not go far enough to ensure the safe introduction of agricultural biotechnology,” stated the Inspector General’s report, according to the Advertiser. The problem is that if government oversight isn’t sufficient, then it’s possible genetically modified seeds could escape from their test fields and enter the greater agricultural world, thus contaminating the world’s food supply. GMO seed companies like Monsanto—and its local affiliate Monsanto Hawai’i—have always said such contamination wasn’t likely, but without proper U.S. government oversight, who’s to say?

MONDAY, JAN 2

You know, the coming of the New Year isn’t all happy times and pass the Zipperhead shots. We should all be hopeful and positive and all that, but we should also be vigilant. There are dangers out there, people! Big ones! Just listen to our president—he seems to love telling us that the world is a scary, dangerous place and we have to be tough! Who knows what kind of threat lurks around the corner? There’s Iraq, a burning maelstrom of horrors. And there’s avian influenza, which is just waiting to unleash a pandemic on us all. And then there’s cheerleading-related injuries. They’re up, you know. By a lot, according to an Associated Press report in today’s Maui News. From 1990 to 2002, the number of cuts, scrapes, bruises, strains and fractures caused by cheerleading more than doubled, while the nation’s cheerleader population grew just 18 percent. Doubled! “Cheerleading is not what it used to be,” safety instructor and ex-cheerleader Erin Brooks told the AP. “It’s no longer standing on the sidelines looking cute in a skirt. It’s more body skills.” Given the injury data, it’s more like a lack of skills. Anthony Pignataro feels that it’s far too easy to delete computer files and someone really ought to do something about that. MTW

If you’ve been paying attention, then you’ve certainly noticed the steady rise of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation up the power rankings. The reason is simple: they keep their mouths shut. For instance, two weeks ago the foundation cut a $10,000 check to the nonprofit Catholic Charities Hawaii so it can get small bilingual medical emergency cards to all non-English-speaking residents in the state. An undeniably good deed, it came on the heals of the Foundation’s booting of a small familyowned thrift store that always paid its rent from one of its Oahu commercial properties for reasons that it declined to give to anyone, including the thrift store. In fact, the Honolulu Advertiser’s Bob Krauss was so incensed by the foundation’s action he wrote a scathing Nov. 23, 2005 column on it. MTW

MORE WEIRD ANIMAL MATING HABITS In September, scientists from the Institute of Marine Research in Vigo, Spain, described, for likely the first time, the probable mating ritual of giant squid (which are typically 50 feet long, with eight legs and two tentacles, living in the blackness of the ocean a mile down). Based on examining five squid stranded on a beach in Spain, they posited that the larger female could rather easily resist the male, whose 8-foot-long, hypodermic needle-like penis is wielded so clumsily that he could mistakenly inseminate another passing male, or his own tentacle.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY In South Korea, which has the highest rate of high-speed Internet use in the world, more than one-third of the population plays video games, with the result an alarming number of obsessive gamers requiring counseling (and, so far, two deaths after, respectively, 50 and 86 straight hours of playing). According to an October Associated Press dispatch from Seoul, at the many Internet cafes, gamers “typically live on instant [noodles] and cigarettes, barely sleeping and seldom washing.” Video games are also a spectator sport: Three cable channels show matches, and the government is building an electronic-sports “stadium,” where competitions will be shown on big screens.

Andrew Uitvlugt, candidate for mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia, proposed in November to coax drug addicts into public jobs, such as trash collection, by rewarding them with crack cocaine, on the theory that the work would be so fulfilling that they would ultimately decline the drugs. He finished fourth out of five candidates.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS In New Braunfels, Texas, in November, Robert Villarreal, 34, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after he sold drugs to the same undercover officer for the third time in a 14year period. He had actually argued “entrapment,” claiming that for the first sale, in 1988, he was so young that he shouldn’t be expected to remember later what the officer looked like.

THIS WEEK IN SCAMS A 50-year-old dentist in Amsterdam, Netherlands, received only a suspended sentence in November for a scheme in which he had chopped off a finger but then staged a car accident to claim the equivalent of about $2.2 million for the finger-maiming under his auto policy. Also in November, a 35-year-old man in St. Johann, Austria, was arrested for trying to claim the equivalent of about $1.17 million in insurance based on his severed finger, from a bicycle injury, when, according to police, he had actually placed his finger on a rail and let a train run over it. New Table

Lance Collins has barely sat on the Maui County Liquor Control Board of Adjudication for six months, and he already wants a new table. Sound silly? Actually, the way things are arranged now, he should get one. Currently the nine adjudication board members sit at the base of a U-shaped table facing a much smaller table where the liquor licensee facing a complaint sits. From the licensee’s point of view, the board secretary and court stenographer sit on the right of the U, the corporation counsel attorney sits at the center next to the board chairman and the deputy prosecuting attorney sits on the left arm of the table, flanked on either side by the LC director and his chief of investigations. From the licensee’s point of view, Collins pointed out in a Dec. 21, 2005 letter to Liquor Commission Chairman Donald Fujii, the prosecutor accusing the licensee of committing a crime and the Board of Adjudication ruling on that accusation are one and the same. To say the least, such an arrangement is disorienting—if indeed the Adjudication Board makes its decisions completely independent of the Liquor Control department. “It would be highly irregular and perhaps even prejudicial to the Department if the licensee-respondent and its representatives, who are also parties to the contested case, were permitted to sit [at] the Board table during [an] adjudicatory hearing,” Collins wrote in his letter. “Yet, the custom and practice of the Board has been to permit the Department to do so. This is highly irregular in terms of impartiality and is somewhat prejudicial to the non-Department party to the contested case.” Collins’ solution is simply to seat the LC director and deputy prosecuting attorney at a separate table—perhaps similar to the table where the licensee has to sit now—“to demonstrate that both parties are being treated in a similar and fair manner.” LC Director Franklyn Silva has said many times that his department goes out of his way to be fair to liquor licensees. Here’s an excellent chance to show that fairness.

At about 6 p.m. last Friday, Dec. 30, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa stopped by the nursery located directly behind the Island Surf Building in Kihei. It was to be a cordial visit, but he wasn’t there to buy plants. At the end of a busy week right before New Year’s, Arakawa dropped by for a face-to-face talk with the nursery owner about coqui frogs. For almost the last four years, coqui frogs—by far the loudest and most notorious invasive species currently building a home on Maui— have infested that nursery. They’ve apparently hitched rides on plants the nursery imported from elsewhere—a common threat facing nurseries throughout Hawai’i. The point of Arakawa’s visit was to convince the owner to let members of the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) into his nursery to try to get rid of the frogs. That seems to have happened. “We had a very pleasant conversation,” said Arakawa. “But there’s no formal agreement. We’re just trying to get a [spraying] program together.” That it took Arakawa’s personal intervention on behalf of MISC shows how bad relations between the county and the nursery have gotten. Official county notes and correspondence concerning the nursery show that since 2002 county officials and MISC have patiently tried to get Dale Castleton, the nursery owner, to get rid of the frogs. These notes and documents show that at first Castleton was helpful, but in recent months he’d taken a hard line, insisting that the frogs are “beneficial” to his nursery and the environment as a whole and refusing to let MISC spray for frogs. For local residents, the sounds of incessant coqui frog chirping throughout the night have long passed the unbearable point. “They’ve had frogs there for years,” said Kihei resident and community activist Buck Joiner. “It’s infuriating that he won’t take responsibility.” Castleton politely refused to comment for this story—saying he was “involved with some legal issues” surrounding the nursery—unless I submitted written questions to him that he would then forward to his attorney. When I said my preference was to conduct a straight interview and asked to speak directly to his attorney, Castleton declined to name his attorney and hung up on me. A MISC manager also didn’t want to comment on the matter. “I’m very hesitant to talk about that with the press,” said Teya Penniman, the MISC manager who’s spent a lot of time dealing with the nursery. “Our focus is on cooperation. He has been cooperative in the past. An ongoing issue with us is to work with different nurseries. We stand ready to help anyone.”

A county official familiar with the Castleton matter referred to coqui frogs as the county’s “number one target invasive species.” The males are famous for their nocturnal 90-100 decibel mating chirp, which will last long into the night. Pack them into, say, a 3,000-square-foot plant nursery, and they’ll sound like a weird alien jam session. “From an economic perspective, they lower property values,” said Penniman. “That’s happening on the Big Island. It’s also a quality of life issue. A lot of people find them extremely annoying.” As a non-native species, the coqui have no natural predator in Hawai’i. For that reason, they’re able to multiply quickly. They also eat virtually all the native insects around here, except for mosquitoes. There’s also the hypothetical concern that should snakes ever get introduced to Hawai’i, the coqui could provide a more than adequate food source for them. “The nursery industry should be concerned about having other countries and states getting shipments [of frogs] from Hawai’i,” said Penniman. “A nursery in San Diego has an infestation, and it’s believed to have come from Hawai’i. This isn’t just about us—they impact on other places as well.” For these reasons, coqui frogs are illegal to own, breed, sell, import or export in the State of Hawai’i. Hence MISC’s interest in Castleton’s nursery. It’s an interest that the local daily paper doesn’t seem to share. Or at least not anymore. Readers of The Maui News got a tantalizing glimpse of the Castleton controversy last month in its letters to the editor section, which offers readers an open forum to publish their opinions on any subject, ILLUSTRATION: DAN MAY

Infestation!

Why county officials have spent nearly four years battling coqui frogs at one Kihei nursery By Anthony Pignataro regardless of whether they’ve appeared in the News. On Dec. 5, 2005, the paper ran a brief letter from Jackie Ross of Kahului under the headline “Coqui frogs continue to be alive and noisy at a Kihei nursery.” In her letter, Ross blasted “the nursery on the corner of Kanani and South Kihei roads” for allegedly not “taking care of its coqui frog problem.” Ross added that she’d contacted MISC and was told “that they are very aware of the problem and requested numerous times that this property owner take care of it.” But then 11 days letter, the News completely backpedaled. On Dec. 16, the paper ran a “Clarification” that seemed to say all was fine and dandy between MISC and Castleton’s nursery. “[A] letter to the editor in the Dec. 5, 2005, issue of The Maui News contained statements regarding the nursery at Auhana Road in Kihei that may have led some readers to reach erroneous conclusions about the nursery and coqui frogs,” read the clarification. It went on to say that “The nursery states that it takes particular care to ensure that all plants shipped from its premises are from coqui frogs” and that the nursery “also states that it has worked with every interested federal, state and county agency to deal with the coqui frog problem.” Infuriated at what he deemed a complete whitewash of the nursery’s coqui frog problem, Kihei activist Joiner emailed his own letter to the paper. He blasted the paper’s clarification and called on the nursery “to “grow up, accept responsibility, get rid of the coqui frogs, and write your own letters.” Shortly thereafter, Joiner said he got a call from the News, saying they wouldn’t be printing his letter or any other letter or story on Castleton’s nursery. “At this time, we have no plans to do a story on a specific offender,” Maui News City Editor Edwin Tanji emailed me on Dec. 30, 2005. “We have been told of a number of businesses that are failing to deal with coqui infestations in their operations; would you consider it fair to focus on just one? We have had stories about nursery operations that have programs to prevent coqui infestations.” Tanji’s explanation is reasonable but misses two important points. While it’s true that a number of nurseries around Maui had and continue to have coqui frog infestations, a county official familiar with the controversy says Castleton’s is the only nursery that hasn’t been working with the Maui Invasive Species Committee to control it. The official also said that negotiations hadn’t deteriorated with any other Maui nursery to the point that Mayor Arakawa felt it prudent and necessary to become personally involved.

One of the quirks about the battle between the county and Castleton is that no one really knows what to call his nursery. There’s no sign posted on the grounds beyond “No Trespassing,” and no listing in the phone book. A business registration filed with the Hawai’i Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs seems to show the name as “Hula Girl Garden and Gallery,” but that filing expired in June, 2001. A timeline of MISC actions concerning the nursery show Castleton did cooperate—at first. In 2002, he agreed to let MISC officials spray

caffeine in his nursery to kill the frogs. It didn’t work. Two years later, MISC went back and sprayed citric acid. The infestation continued. Then talks stalled. By May of this year, Mayor Arakawa asked Castleton for a face-toface meeting. On May 23, 2005, Castleton and his attorney met Arakawa in the mayor’s office. Things seemed to go well, with Castleton apparently agreeing to “cooperate.” The next month, on June 19, county and MISC officials visited Castleton’s nursery. The MISC timeline shows that Castleton agreed to let the committee staff to work on eradicating from his smaller parcel. He would also allow MISC staff to inspect his plants. They talked of a written agreement, which Castleton said he’d have to go over with his attorney. But Castleton apparently still had concerns. “During this meeting, Mr. Castleton asserted that he believes the coquis are beneficial to his nursery and the environment,” the timeline notes. “He also expressed frustration about negative publicity associated with frogs and his nursery and attributed negative publicity to MISC and/or the Mayor’s Office.” By September 2005, according to the MISC timeline, Castleton still hadn’t signed onto the MISC agreement. The frogs were still on the nursery property. Once again, Arakawa intervened. “Recently I learned that [MISC] believes that efforts to collaborate with you on coqui frog control on your property are at ‘an impasse,’” Arakawa wrote Castleton on Sept. 6, 2005. I find this information disturbing, given your stated agreement during the meeting in my office on May 23, 2005 to cooperate with MISC on control efforts.” The back and forth continued into October. Meanwhile, no action took place on the supposed agreement between MISC and Castleton. On Sept. 23, Sanford J. Langa, Castleton’s Wailuku-based attorney, responded to the mayor, writing that the proposed agreement was problematic and questioning the “organization and status” of MISC. On Oct. 10, Arakawa responded to Langa in writing, explaining MISC’s 10-year history of working within the University of Hawai’i to eradicate coquis from island nurseries. “I am glad to hear that Mr. Castleton is still interested in cooperating with the County to promote environmental health,” Arakawa wrote. “However, I am concerned with the time which has passed since our meeting in May, and urge you to assist him in swiftly reaching an agreement with MISC to partner with them to control the frog infestation at your client’s properties in Kihei.” Ntohing much happened after that, according to the MISC timeline and an interview with a county official familiar with the controversy. Then Arakawa made his personal visit to the nursery on Dec. 30, and shortley thereafter Castleton agreed to let MISC back onto his property. What happens next is hard to say. A few nights ago I drove to Castleton’s nursery and parked outside. Coqui chirping filled the warm night air. After nearly four years of stalemate, it looks like county invasive species officials may finally get a chance to end that symphony of irritation. Maybe. “The proof will be in actually getting the project going and doing the eradication,” said Arakawa. MTW

Amigo’s Just make sure you get the cheese I’ve never trusted anyone who doesn’t like cheese. “What do you mean?” my friend Allison asked as we were finishing a round of sunset cocktails. “I mean just that,” I said. “I’ve got no beef with vegetarians but you just can’t trust anyone who doesn’t like cheese.” As I tried to explain my all-encompassing cheese theory to her—there has to be something wrong with a person who doesn’t like the most delicious food ever—I could tell she was less focused on understanding my rationale and more on pondering whether I had lied to her about working for a newspaper and was really just spending my days here developing my crackpot theory.

Amigo’s 41 E. Lipoa St., Kihei, 879-9952. Open 9 a.m.9 p.m. $ After a lengthy and ultimately fruitless discussion, we both realized we were hungry and craving cheese. It didn’t take us long to decide Mexican food was just what we needed. We were already in South Maui, so we went to Amigo’s. As we browsed the menu at Amigo’s in Kihei, I told Allison that Hispanic people understand cheese. Instead of replying, she shot me a disturbed look and waited for me to elaborate. I explained that one of the beauties of cheese is that adding it to savory foods inevitably makes them taste better. See, Mexican food is already delicious because of the winning combination of beans, tomato, onion, tortilla and meat, but it’s the cheese that brings it all together. Allison didn’t respond to this line of thinking but I knew I was making progress when she ordered the Chicken Enchilada ($3.95) and asked if I wanted to share a Cheese Quesadilla ($4.99). Just to emphasize my point, I ordered my Soft Fish Taco ($3.50) with extra cheese. While our food was being fixed, we gave the great cheese debate a rest and instead prepared for our meal by stocking up at the salsa bar. I helped myself to some of the spicy chipotle salsa and jalapeno peppers while Allison loaded up on salsa verde and pico de gallo. We were both pleased when our food arrived. It was hot and smothered in lots of melted cheese. We started by cutting into the big and cheesy quesadilla. We’d had the option of getting it with steak, chicken or ground beef, but that seemed too fancy. All we needed was a simple but nicely toasted tortilla stuffed with delicious, glorious melted cheese. After completing our first course, we

Owner Jesus Ortega moved on to our individual dishes. My taco was right on the money. The fish was cooked nicely and served with a good proportion of tomato, lettuce, onion and, of course, cheese. Allison found her enchilada just as satisfying. The combination of tender chicken, the tasty sauce it was swimming in and the layer of melted cheese made every bite enjoyable. If you are just in the mood for something small, the a la carte menu is your best bet. It offers the full spectrum at very reasonable prices. If you’re looking for something a little more substantial, ask for one of the combination plates that have generally larger portions, served with rice and beans. And of course, whatever you do decide to order, make sure it comes with cheese. MTW

A Boy and His Cheetah Friday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] Duma is an awesomely heartwarming story about a boy named Xan and an abadoned cheetah cub he befriends and names Duma. Taking place in the gorgeous landscapes of South Africa, Duma is mainly an entertaining adventure tale. But the film’s also ties in mature themes like death, the cycle of life, the sacrifices of family, and “love” meaning sometimes having to set it free. Sigh. A cool, cool movie. Directed by Carroll Ballard and starring Hope Davis, Campbell Scott and newcomer Alex Michaeletos. Rated PG. 100 min. $10. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

[LIVE MUSIC] Anytime there’s a band with an upright bass and a guy whose last name is “Danger,” you know there’s gonna be some rockin’ and a fair share of rollin’. Citing influences from Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and The Ventures, to The Cramps, The Misfits and Fugazi, The Hell Caminos is a band who knows how tap into the dark caverns of their punk heart and rockabilly soul. And they’re from Honolulu! Michael Camino, Nick Danger and Handsome Jack have only been together for two years and yet they’ve already opened for the likes of ‘80s punk veterans TSOL, The Briefs and The Cro-Mags. And they’ve inspired one fan at a recent show on Oahu to compare their high-energy performance to Six String Samurai, a 1999 indie flick centered around a postapocalyptic kung fu rock ‘n roll hero on a journey to Vegas, where he is to succeed Elvis as the King. Somebody hand me my pomade and jean cuffs—I’m a gonna hop in my ’69 Chevy pickup and find me a new pompadoured boyfriend! (With Khrinj and White Rose at Casanova. $10).

[SPIRITUAL] The Diamond Approach is the latest in spiritual paths incorporating psychology with spirituality, that claims its aim is “to live fully and deeply” by helping you to get rid of fixed patterns and discovering your “true essence.” Created by physicist A.H. Almaas while attending UC Berkeley in the early 1970’s, the Diamond Approach, writes Almaas, “vies reality to be fundamentally the eternal truth of spirit that manifests itself in various dimensions, from the deepest dimension of absolute emptiness to the physical realm.” The spiritual teachings attempt to enliven a spirit of inquiry, motivated by a “love of truth” and “dissolution of biases,” including the belief that what’s being studied is not separate from the student. And in the book The Diamond Approach by John Davis, chapters cover “The Phenomenology of Space,” “Nonconceptual Reality and the Nameless” and “The Theory of Holes”—pretty heady stuff. But hey, whatever floats your boat, melts your butter or, uh, shines your diamond. Free.

up Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Lane) as he induces his straight-laced accountant Leo Bloom (Broderick) to conspire on a sure-thing-flop musical production called Springtime For Hitler. Their scheme to become millionaires, by swindling their blue-haired backers, backfires when the play becomes an overnight hit. Uma Thurman adds zest as Ulla, the producers’ Swedish bombshell secretary. For giddy musical fans who never saw The Producers on Broadway, the movie is a competent rendition that, like Rent, never lets the audience forget that you’re watching a film version of a play. Set in the cloistered Broadway world of the late 1950s, the woof and warp of Brooks’ cheesy characters wears thin as his cartoon stereotypes go through the motions of producing a musical flop. It doesn’t help matters that Brooks’ satire of Hitler hits as many bum notes as good ones with its assertion that there’s no accounting for the public’s fickle tastes.

Matthew Broderick’s intricately modulated stage performance comes to brilliant light under Stoman’s lens. The first third of the movie involves Max trying to convince Leo to put his high morals and low self-esteem on a shelf long enough to fleece a million dollars from Broadway investors. It’s in these early scenes that Broderick steals focus with surprising facial expressions and an off-kilter delivery that simmers with comic heat. Broderick’s dancing may not enter the realm of Fred Astaire but he works the choreography of his character like a Broadway veteran. Brooks’ songs are spiked with darts of humorous vulgarity but are not the kind to send you humming any specific tune on your way out of the cinema. Will Ferrell makes the most of his glorified cameo performance as escaped Nazi-turned-playwright Franz Liebken. Complete with Nazi armbands and a flock of saluting pigeons, Ferrell’s Liebken stays true to Brooks’ irreverent brand of kooky operatic comedy. The story hinges on Leo and Max’s decision to hire a campy cross-dressing director (think Ed Wood) named Roger De Bris (Gary Beach) to oversee their “doomed” production. The limelight seeking De Bris pulls out all of his Ethyl Mermen moves when he steps in to fill the Hitler role after Franz Liebken breaks his leg on opening night. De Bris hits a self-mocking attitude as Hitler that lures the escaping audience back to their seats and ensures some jail time for Max and Leo. The Producers is a dated play with an outdated brand of humor that is at once too racy and yet too soft to function as meaningful satire by today’s standards. Broderick and Lane work every angle of comedy available to their naive characters and set an easy comic tone that everything hangs on. The play may be lousy, but the actors are great. MTW

Adventures in Book Readings When a travel book writer meets his latest fan Brandon Wilson is the author of adventure travel books Yak Butter Blues and Dead Men Don’t Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa. Both have done well, which have instigated a series of book signings far and near. And while Wilson may have faced alligators and dagger-wielding tribesmen in Africa, what he faces at some signings could be deemed a tad more perilous, as evidenced by a recent reading at Borders Books in Kahului. The store was filled to capacity with an aggregation of shoppers just one weekend before Christmas. Possibly because of their holiday frenzy, the shoppers didn’t notice the row of chairs and a table adorned with stacks of Wilson’s books, as well as a wall map of Africa depicting his travels. A few minutes after Wilson’s scheduled reading, just three people occupied the seats in front of him. He smiled at the “intimate group” and proceeded. He started his talk by citing the source of inspiration for his travels: Tarzan movies and National Geographic. Wilson said he and his wife were just sitting around the dinner table one night and decided to join an organized safari in Africa. They figured it would be safer to travel with experts. “We were the old guys,” said Wilson. “Some of these kids had never left home before.” And no one in their safari group had ever traveled across Africa, except for the one-eyed driver who would invariably veer into soft sand pists and get stuck every 15 minutes. “Did you ever feel you’re going to get lost?” asked the older gentleman in the front row. “That was the least of my worries, at some points,” said Wilson. He continued to describe the 10,000mile trip—a venture four times the length of the United States. After he and his wife separated from the hapless crew, they visited with French-speaking jungle inhabitants, went antelope hunting with Pygmies, rendezvoused with mountain gorillas, went whitewater rafting and climbed Kilimanjaro. “You gotta be adventurous to do that!” said the front row man. “Weren’t you afraid of getting kidnapped?” Wilson explained that the people they met were so isolated, so cut off from the rest of the world that they were eager to talk to strangers as a source of information.

He also said kids always asked for Bic pens since they couldn’t attend school without one. “Did you see a lot of crocodiles?” asked the man up front. “Yes,” said Wilson. He then proceeded to read an excerpt from Dead Men Don’t Leave Tips, pointing to the map of Africa behind him and reading on about an adventure in Victoria Falls. “How is the Zambizi River—is it cold or hot?” asked the man. “Freezing,” said Wilson. And he continued reading. “You gotta be adventurous to do that,” said the man again, interrupting. “My son’s like that. He’s been to Tibet and stuff. He used to be an Olympic swimmer, now he climbs mountains.” Wilson took the interruption as an opportunity to talk about his first book, Yak Butter Blues, in which he and his wife trekked across Tibet, from Lhasa to Kathmandu, Nepal. “Your wife’s gotta be as crazy as you!” said the front row man. “Did she get thrown out at the rapids?” “We all did,” said Wilson. “What was your motivation to do this?” “My passion to be able to travel, one step at a time,” said Wilson. “Walking gets to be a meditation.” “Isn’t there a civil war in Kathmandu?” the man asked. “My son got an award in San Francisco from the Dalai Lama.” Wilson smiled, eventually wrapped up his reading, and offered to sign a book for his new fan. “I gotta read this,” said the man. “It sounds interesting. I’m getting kinda bored and I’m gonna be here for two months!” MTW

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) Happy Birthday, Cap! May all your birthday wishes and New Year’s resolutions come true. Let the love shine this week and express your excitement to all those interested in your point of view. A kind and gentle spirit is with you in a dream, with an important message about someone very close to you. Have you written your Thank You notes?

The Shops & Restaurants

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) What is your favorite book? Are you reading anything lately? Now is a good time to not be bored, so crack a whip on your ass and start by learning new information. Ask yourself: what do I like? Study it and find out how it will better your survival here on Earth. Instead of kicking back on the sofa, get your butt into the gym. No excuses like, “I don’t have the energy.” That is where energy is made. PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) Now is an excellent time to look back and see what you want to change about your carelessness and weakness to outside forces when it comes to making decisions for yourself. You are number one in this world and you must not forget how important it is to take care of you. It’s not being selfish when it comes to nutrition and getting enough sleep. Stay away from negative influences. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It looks like a good weekend for Aries. The moon is in your sign until the transition into Taurus Saturday morning; so, it might be a rough start. Knowing how to stick to one drink of choice the entire night during the holidays is hopefully a lesson already perfected. Remember to celebrate the good life every moment, but lava flow floaters and double 1800 margaritas on the rocks with salt can still be disciplined into moderation. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Your responsibilities have grown somewhat; enjoy the ability to perform at your best. You don’t have to worry so much about the time thing this week—you just need to be on it when it comes to your morning chores. With each step in the direction of your goals and happiness, your magnificent stride will shine extra bright and your friends will be there for you in a time of need.

• Bamboo Bar & Grill • Breakwall Cafe

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) Love is the smile on your face but it can also bring emptiness to someone’s heart. It can be very hard to lose a best friend and lover, only to return to that road of hoping one day, love will find you again. So we need to start focusing on all the different avenues your energy can be put towards, pointing directly at what you want to do. Stand firm. When the earth questions your motivation, live and speak from the heart.

• The Feast at LeLe • Friends of Moku’ula • Gaby’s Pizzeria

CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) This weekend could bring a twist of restlessness. Rise and shine! Time to get out of the house and pick up some fresh jungle flowers to decorate the home. An early call from a friend will tempt you for some serious travel. But is that what you really need? Maybe a trip to the other side is all that’s necessary to satisfy that restless itch for new adventure. Bring someone with you or travel alone, and don’t forget to bring your camera.

• Gallerie Hawaii • Goofy Foot Surf School • Hecocks Restaurant • I’O Restaurant

LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) When you ask the question, be prepared for the truth. If aliens asked you to go with them, what would you say? Maybe they’re already here among us. My point here is, dear Leo, no matter who’s right or who’s wrong, a sweet kiss from your lover in the shower keeps the smile on your face and the spring in your step.

• Joelle C. Gallery • Lahaina Printsellers • Lei Spa Maui

VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) The soothing sound of waves on the shore cools your mind and worry of anything. Miracles happen everyday, good people work hard for their families and the light they shine brings strength in uncertain times. One day, together, we the people of the planet will be as one surviving team and the violence and disrespect to nature comes to an end.

• Maggie Coulombe • Maui To Go Arts & Crafts • Nancy Emerson School of Surfing

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) Thursday, Friday and Saturday are going to be challenging days but Sunday and Monday are rewarding. It’s very important to know what days are going to be harder for you, instead of wondering: “What the flip is wrong with me today?” Knowing your challenges can keep you out of the deep end, so get ready!

• The Needlework Shop • Pacific’O Restaurant • Seaside Gems Maui

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) Are we having a problem with loyalty? Knowing all the problems and drama at work are things easily spoken about, but loose lips sink ships. Being a good secret keeper is major key at this time. Doesn’t matter if the ink is blue or black, but it does matter if you have a signature. Pick your team wisely.

• Whalers General Store

20+ Shops & Boutiques • 4 Oceanfront Restaurants • Polynesian Canoe Exhibits

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) When the time is right, the “one” for you will come along. All those who’ve given up hope need to turn up the music and get back into that mind frame of positive, patient energy. It’s not all about the money, honey. Maui is the perfect lover’s paradise. Respect and good vibes will keep you satisfied until love blossoms once again.

After Twilight

THE

INSIDER

Love is the flower of life, and blossoms unexpectedly and without law, and must be plucked before it is found, and enjoyed for the brief hour of its duration. - D.H. Lawrence On New Year’s Day, Sasha and I had a movie marathon, which included the romantic thinkers Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. The movies dealt with attraction, idealism, timing, passion, “the one that got away” and second chances. The next day, I was reading Classic Nasty by Jack Murnighan and came across a word I had never seen before: Weltschmerz. It’s a term used to depict a kind of sentimental melancholy caused by the feeling of having known perfect joy and then missing it incessantly. Weltschmerz. Fabulous, isn’t it? Go ahead, say it out loud. There are defining loves in everyone’s life, just as there are defining moments. Sometimes the two are the same. You could have loved and lost many times since, but you will never forget them. For me, that relationship started as a failed attempt at a one-night stand. I had just turned 22, broken up with my boyfriend in Palm Springs and planned to move to Santa Cruz to attend the university there. With my mom’s help, I hauled all my crap and my cat to a red-walled studio in the middle of an old motel that was converted into a bunch of by-the-sea bungalows on Beach Hill in Santa Cruz. After a couple weeks, I secured a job, got adjusted to my new surroundings, unpacked my last box and met the neighbors. But one evening, I decided to let loose and check out the infamous nightclub downtown called The Catalyst—the Arc Angels with Charlie Sexton were playing. I also decided I would drink a 40-ounce bottle of MGD in the parking lot. And that I’d find some stranger to fool around with. It was sorta like my declaration of independence, you know, only seedier. He was sitting at the bar, next to the only empty seat in the place. He had dark hair and was wearing a black leather jacket and glasses. Naturally, we struck up a conversation. He told me he was visiting from San Francisco, on a mid-week motorcycle ride with his pop. As I eased into the confidence of knowing I had found my match for the evening, he excused himself and left. I was hooked. So we did the coy mating dance for a while but we did eventually end up leaving the bar and making out on the beach in front of my new pad. When we got to my place, I neglected to realize the importance of shutting windows when you live in the middle of a bunch of other people’s apartments. So my neighbors got to know me a little better. Ahem. He showed up the next day with a rose. And though our passionate five-year stint was fraught with jealousy, cheating, financial troubles, career changes, breakups, make-ups and our pit bull munching on a trespasser’s foot, there are some things I just can’t seem to shake. Like, I loved wearing his jeans. They were always covered in paint and grease, appropriately faded and a little too baggy. I loved the smell of his hair—it always smelled vaguely like he washed it with a bar of Irish Spring and then slicked it back with Brillo cream. I loved the way he snored and how his hands twitched in his sleep. His hands were rough, calloused and nails bitten down to the skin. He had broad shoulders and strong arms—he wasn’t even six feet but he walked tall and made me feel like a little lady. In fact, that’s what he called me. That, or “She-Monster.” When he smiled, he would squint his eyes and jut out his chin like he was Marlon Brando about to make an offer you couldn’t refuse. He and his father had a collection of vintage Italian bikes. He even gave me one—a Moto Guzzi cruiser that he promised to fix up one day. He taught me about Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs and Charles Bukowski. He made me listen to Tom Waits, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Mazzy Star and Portishead. We watched foreign films and tons of kung fu movies. He was an amateur photographer and took me to Robert Mapplethorpe exhibits. He introduced me to Coop, Robert Williams and Juxtapoz magazine. Of course, sex was an important aspect of our relationship and there were a lot of firsts. He bought me my first toy—nipple clamps. He gave me my first Cherry Poptart erotic comic book. He took me to my first peep show at the Lusty Lady in North Beach, San Francisco. It was with him that I first learned of S&M, B&D and other reindeer games. But am I glamorizing this particular relationship? It certainly wasn’t perfect; there was a reason we broke up. Am I doomed to contemplate its demise as my first fantastic failure at love? Is it absolutely necessary to compare all subsequent relationships to that one, as flawed as it was? Or is it just part of my personality to be forever longing for an ideal I can never hope to achieve? It’s uncanny that one word could so easily sum me up. Weltschmerz... And it’s German, too!
