LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THE DEMOCRATIC WAY It is very sad that our once upon a time Democratic Senators are now voting with the Republicans (“Party People: what it means to be a Democrat in Hawai’i,” Nov. 17, 2005). Both Senators [Daniel] Inouye and [Daniel] Akaka voted yes to cut Medicare, Medicaid, student loans and other programs to help the poor. Later in the day both Inouye and Akaka voted with the Republicans to end a filibuster so the Senate could then vote to drill in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. Fortunately, enough Republicans voted with the Democrats to continue the filibuster. But no thanks to Inouye and Akaka. What’s happened to our two Senators that they are now voting with the Republicans? They should explain their votes! One theory is that they want the Akaka Bill to be favorably voted on so badly, that they are now willing to kowtow to the Republicans to gain favor. To cut Medicare and Medicaid for Hawai’i’s elderly people and to destroy the Arctic Refuge in hopes that someday the Akaka Bill will be passed is unforgivable! This could go on for years. As long as the Republicans know they can always count on Inouye and Akaka to vote with them until the Akaka Bill is finally voted on, why should the Republicans ever allow the Akaka Bill to be voted on? Every Hawaiian whose Medicare and Medicaid is being cut should write a letter to Inouye and Akaka demanding an explanation! What’s next? Will they vote with the Republicans to cut taxes for the rich while the national debt is going through the roof? -Bob Babson, Kihei

VERY MYSTERIOUS Maui Time Weekly Debra Lordan [actually editor of the Maui Weekly], I am simpatico with your editorial views

on “The Homeless in Maui” and Toni Polancy’s “Help for the Homeless.” I have a “sense” you would be interested in my plans to utilize my specific knowledge of Cosmic Forces (“Identified by Numbers”) to help pinpoint the real causes of the current teen suicide epidemic in America, a ridiculous tragedy. I was contacted—prior to coming to Hawai’i—to help due to the vital information I uncovered (discovered?) and documented over twenty years ago on the “Mysterious forces that trigger events” in peoples lives. But more important, I now have the logical alternative to “ignorance of the cause and timing” which lends to medical subjugation and—too many times lately—teen suicide. I will share this knowledge at the press party along with my specific plans and unique donation to help the National Public Radio and TV stations in Hawai’i raise sorely needed operating funds cut off by the present administration. -Jack Tafoya, “recent Maui resident”

CORRECTIONS It should have been noted in the Dec. 29, 2005 article “My Meeting” that the proposed Wailea 670 project received zoning approval in 1992 and Maui County Planning Commission approval in 2001. Also, project spokesman Charlie Jencks should have been identified as a member and past president of the Maui Contractors Association.

Fire in the Hole Maui Planners move to restrict the DeCoite landfill in Ma’alaea One of Maui’s nastiest environmental accidents occurred last July 3. That’s when the DeCoite Construction and Demolition (C&D) landfill in Ma’alaea caught fire. Heavy plumes of smoke forced Maui Police to close North Kihei Road from Honoapi’ilani Highway to the MokulelePi’ilani intersection for hours. To keep noxious smoke and odors from filling their lungs and homes, Ma’alaea residents braved the summer heat by closing their doors and windows. It took firefighters nearly nine hours to put out the blaze. It wasn’t the first time the landfill ignited. On April 18, 2004 a subsurface fire broke out in the landfill that inundated the Ma’alaea community with fumes and black smoke. Six years earlier, on Jan. 26, 1998, a similar fire broke out and took weeks to extinguish. Robert Riebling, President of the

The dump in question Ma’alaea Community Association (MCA), knows all about the dump and the occasional fires. He’s complained to county officials that his neighbors have suffered from these blazes: breathing difficulties, headaches, eye irritation, congestion and coughing. That’s why it wasn’t surprising seeing Riebling at the Jan. 10, 2006 Maui Planning Commission hearing. The agenda included a permit extension for the DeCoite C&D Landfill, and Riebling stood as the main testifier, asking that the county consider a host of special conditions before granting any permit extension. As it happened, Planning Director Mike Foley had already agreed to many of Riebling’s suggestions. “We are pleased that Director Foley has addressed many of our considerations, Riebling said. “In particular, we welcome the broadening of the definition of combustion in the Special Conditions to include surface, as well as subsurface events because both can generate toxic substances.” The dump opened in 1996 and certainly seemed like a good idea at the time. It’s the old Pu’uhele cinder cone—one of four small eruptions centers that formed long after the main West Maui volcano went dormant. “The cinder cone was heavily mined during the 1940’s as a source of rock for the U.S. military,” testified Rory Frampton, a land use planner from Chris Hart and Partners working on behalf of Decoite Trucking, the dump operator. The excavation eliminated the original cinder cone and left a 100-foot-deep pit nearly 10 acres in size. Labeled an “attractive nuisance,” Frampton said the open puka was a public danger that would have cost landowner Alexander & Baldwin $8 million to $10 million to fill in. One of Riebling’s most important conditions

was that any type of combustion event occurring in the pit—either on the surface or beneath—should trigger mandatory actions on the operator’s part. He also asked that the operator notify an MCA representative and the rest of the community in writing within 24 hours of any combustion event. As it happened, the Planning Department met him halfway, ordering Decoit to verbally alert residences within 24 hours of an incident but allowing seven days for the sending of written notices. Riebling also suggested that all types of fires trigger sampling and reporting requirements, not just subsurface combustion. But when Frampton suggested that only a subsurface fire should trigger toxic samplings, the commissioners agreed. Though they did stipulate that the test must be done within 30 days of a fire. And the commission rebuffed Riebling’s request that permit extensions last for just two years. Agreeing that Decoite was working to prevent future fires and to ensure the safety of Maui residents, the commission approved a decade extension. But all that could prove irrelevant. As the only construction dump on Maui, the Decoite Construction and Demolition Landfill is about to get a massive influx of junk once the Kapalua Bay hotel, Royal Lahaina, Maui Lu and Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort all get torn down. In fact, at the hearing Foley asked Decoite consultant Stephen Joseph what the projected capacity of the dump would be when factoring in these future demolitions and remodels. “No one has considered this,” Joseph said. “I bet the lifespan would be considerably shortened with such an increase caused by the demo of these major hotels.” Great news, said Riebling. “Anything which would accelerate the rate at which it is filled up and closed would be regarded as beneficial,” he said. Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle told reporters on Jan. 5, 2006 during her trip to Manila: “The Philippines in many ways is a first line of defense for us, so the cooperation among the defense forces here is very important.”

What she didn’t say: U.S. foreign policy has rarely been expressed both so eloquently and so very bizarrely. Much like President George W. Bush, who loves to tell the American people that we’re fighting a bloody guerilla war in Iraq so we won’t have to fight “terrorists” at home, Lingle speaks of the Philippines as a kind of trip-wire, bravely fighting off an assault by terrorists/insurgents/evil-doers to the last man, giving us time to pack up the kids and the SUV and head to safer shores. Yet like Bush, she neglects to say why the Filipino people—or the Iraqi people, for that matter—agreed to turn their own country into our defense zone. -Anthony Pignataro

THURSDAY, JAN. 5 So the state Auditor is really putting in overtime doing all these audits. The latest, plugged in today’s Pacific Business News, says the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) doesn’t provide proper leadership over its Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), which has the thankless job of patrolling state-controlled lands. According to the report, DOCARE officers “rarely patrol the state’s waterways in available boats,” must deal with a 50 percent workload increase without a corresponding staff increase

and find their time taken up by paperwork instead of actual law enforcement in the field. But somehow through it all, Maui DOCARE officers have managed to lead the state in average enforcement actions each year. Forgive me, but all this sounds a tad familiar to me. I know I’ve read it somewhere before… Oh, of course: it was the point of our Dec. 8, 2005 cover story “Those who DOCARE” by Cheryl Ambrozic-Mooz that profiled numerous DOCARE officers who were willing to put on the record their complaints that tight budgets are preventing them from doing their jobs. How silly of me to forget.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Great news for rich people! The Maui County Council just approved Maui Land & Pineapple’s big Kapalua Mauka plan! It wasn’t a complete blowout for the land king—just a 6-3 vote of approval—but it was more than enough to get the big resort expansion on its 20-year way. Was there ever really any doubt that the company would get its chance to build another 690 condos and homes for the wealthy and powerful? Or that the county would let it get away with building its mandatory affordable homes somewhere other than Kapalua Mauka, so the rich people who do live there don’t have to deal with unsightly working-class types— most of whom will be MLP employees anyway?

washed up on our shores. Put much too simply, Abramoff was until last year a Type A, highpowered devil-may-care Republican lobbyist who took many millions of dollars from Indian tribes and other clients and then allegedly bribed a boatload of congressmen, most but not all of which are Republicans. For instance, our own Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye and Congressman Neil Abercrombie took Abramoff money. Anyway, citing Abramoff’s recent guilty plea on charges of tax evasion, fraud and conspiracy, Governor Linda Lingle announced she’s returning $4,000 she’s taken from Abramoff and his lobbying firm since late 2003 (Inouye has said he’s giving back the $6,000 he got from Abramoff, but Abercrombie’s insisting he’s going to keep his $2,000). My only question is why Lingle—and Inouye, for that matter—is giving the dough away now. Why not back in June 2005, when the U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Committee reported that Abramoff spent money given to

him by a Mississippi Indian tribe on a West Bank sniper school instead of on anti-gambling groups, which is how the tribe wanted the money spent in the first place? Or how about even earlier than that, in April of 2005, when the papers were reporting that Abramoff referred to his Indian tribe clients as “monkeys,” “troglodytes” and “idiots”? Or here’s an idea: she could just never have taken the money in the first place. She would have a perfect excuse, too: she could have cited the 1989 Dolph Lundgren picture Red Scorpion, which Abramoff produced and wrote. No one, including quite possible Abramoff himself, would have argued that point.

So tonight Charlie Jencks finally got a county Land Use Committee hearing his big Wailea 670—oops, I think I’m supposed to call it Honua’ula, which translates as either “red earth” or “dark sugar cane,” depending on which dictionary you check out and whether you get off on this kind of marketing—project that seeks to build 1,400 new homes in Wailea. As Jencks likes to point out, the new development will have 350 affordable homes. Or put another way, it will have 1,050 unaffordable homes. Anyway, the point is that it will have a lot of homes, as well as the added bonus of an as-yet not really specified source of water. Let the good times roll! You know, we really need this Wailea 670. There just aren’t enough rich people living on Maui. Ask anyone. I mean, Maui Land & Pineapple’s Kapalua Mauka will help, but who knows when that will go through.

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

Lingle may not have Abramoff’s money to play with anymore, but if the Hawai’i Democratic Party continues to find new ways to define the term “hapless,” she won’t need it. Yup, the state party lost another of its potential candidates to run against Lingle this weekend. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, former Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue opted out of the race after determining that he was going to have to raise money to pay for the campaign. This whittles down the number of potential Lingle adversaries to two, one of which—Hawai’i County Mayor Harry Kim—is actually a Republican. But hey! There’s still nine full months of potential campaigning before the election! That’s plenty of time to draft someone, plaster his or her face all over the state and cut a half-dozen awkward commercials in which he or she talks about life-long dreams of being governor. They could even do a debate or two! Oh yeah, Lingle’s toast.

TUESDAY, JAN. 10 So the DLNR just announced that they want $92 million in fiscal year 2007—a $15 million increase over what they’re getting this year. You think this has anything to do with that recent state audit saying the department has a week enforcement branch? Anthony Pignataro is currently working on a sequel to the 1993 movie Swing Kids, tentatively titled Swing Adults, which deals with littleknown German efforts to introduce swing dancing to Stalingrad during World War II. Get people to think of your big land development company as environmentally friendly and you’ll get your projects faster and easier. It’s just public relations, people, but it works. A&B and Dowling Co. have long “green-washed” their massive homebuilding projects, and two key moves this week show they haven’t lost their style. The new 2006 state Department of Land and Natural Resources calendar is out, and it’s hardly surprising that the old Alexander and Baldwin Foundation is one of its biggest sponsors. And this week we also learned that developer Everett Dowling—who’s going to build million-dollar condos right on the beautiful Makena shore—has without a trace of irony signed on to sponsor the upcoming Maui Coastal Land Trust’s “Buy Back the Beach” luau. Bangkok economics student Panupol Sujjayakorn interrupted his studies in November to defend his World Scrabble Championship in London, one of many non-English-speaking competitors who achieved top-of-the-line ranking by memorizing up to 100,000 words in English without ever knowing their meanings. Like the others, reported the Chronicle of Higher Education, Mr. Panupol learned first those premium words that overuse the prominent Scrabble letter tiles like “aureolae.” Alas, this time around, a native English speaker, Dr. Adam Logan, a number theory researcher, won the title, building actual words like “qanat” and “euripi.”

A bold weight-loss program of the Life of Life Healing Spa in Hong Kong involves actually setting fire briefly to the parts of the body holding the most fat, according to a December dispatch in London’s Daily Telegraph. According to owner Karen Chu, the fire follows an energy flow “reading,” full-body exfoliation, high-pressure hose spray, and herband-potion and alcohol rub-downs (but wet towels and a fire extinguisher are at the ready in case of problems). Chu said about 100 clients have undergone the treatment, with no complications, and the ones interviewed by the Daily Telegraph reporter praised the service. Chu said the treatment is based on traditional Chinese medicine, but a Hong Kong doctor interviewed by Agence France-Presse said, “I have never heard of such a thing.”

GUILTY DESPITE DEFORMITY

In November in Murfreesboro, Tenn., U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs bureaucrats Joseph Haymond and Natalie Coker were charged with taking kickbacks from suppliers on government purchases of 100,000 rolls of red tape. The tape is distinctive, red “security” tape used on packages of VA pharmaceuticals. And according to a November Washington Post profile of federal examiner Russell Stormer, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has, since 1790, granted about 30,000 patents to people who have imagined unique ways to reinvent the wheel, or at least improve upon it.

In November, engineering student Mischa Beutling, 22, became the most recent rape defendant to profess innocence by impossibility, arguing that his penis is simply too large to have committed the crime. Beutling, who stands 6-7 and weighs 240 pounds, called a urologist to the stand in Newmarket, Ontario, to testify that Beutling’s is 8 1/2 inches long “semi-relaxed” and 6 1/2 inches in circumference and that a woman who has not given birth could not accommodate it without serious injury. In December, a judge named Margaret Eberhard found Beutling guilty.

MOST CONVENIENT AMBULANCE CHASE In November, according to an Indianapolis Star report of a local accident, an SUV driver collided with another car, causing the SUV to crash into an office building, partially smashing through a wall. Among the building’s tenants: the personalinjury law firm Mitchell Hurst Jacobs & Dick, which specializes in automobile accidents.

Children’s Crusade It was 1982. I was 18 and snotty and wanted to see the world. And so, a few days after a brief chat with an army recruiter I rode the bus to downtown Dayton to take the Armed Forces Qualifying Test. The math, I remember, was at about a fifth-grade level. My biggest challenge was remembering material that I’d digested years earlier. But the guys around me were visibly struggling, sighing and staring vacantly at the acoustical tiles suspended from the ceiling. My mom’s phone rang a few days later. It was my recruiter. “I’ve got to tell you, we haven’t seen scores like this in years,” he said. “We can offer you an amazing career. We can guarantee you a fast-track to full officer. We’ll station you anywhere you want. You can write your own ticket.” “What about this text in the enlistment agreement, where you say you can send me anywhere?” “Oh, that’s just technical. Nothing to worry about.” Uh-huh. He may have been lying about my “unprecedented” test scores, but I knew they’d send me to whichever unappealing war zone most suited their needs. Still, I was flattered by their interest in me. I’d just finished a grueling freshman year at Columbia, where I was one of the dumbest students in most of my engineering classes. After having been ranked first in calculus during high school, it was a brutal fall from grace. The Army might be my chance to shine—a world where many of my peers were likely to be, well, stupid. Then I had a dream, perhaps inspired by some movie I’d since forgotten, placing me under a driving rain, obviously at boot camp, being ordered by a sergeant to perform an absurd number of push-ups. I hate push-ups. Finally, in clichéed form, I suggested that he have sex with himself. The scene flashed forward to my courtmartial for insubordination. When I awoke I knew that I wasn’t suited for military life. I had always chafed under discipline, even when it was meted out by someone I respected. My response could prove disastrous were I to find myself ordered around by the wrong person. As I write this now, at 42, I’m a different person. I know I could handle the same Army I shunned at 18. I’ve tolerated idiotic bosses and uncomfortable living arrangements and I understand that hierarchy is required to maintain a cohesive organization. I’m in better physical condition than I’ve ever been. I know when to keep my mouth shut. Moreover, I’m aware that the military exists to open and protect markets for big

corporations and to conquer and control regions with energy resources. The United States, instead of promoting democracy, is the single greatest enemy of democracy and self-determination in the world, repeatedly supporting dictators and overthrowing elected regimes. And I know that wars kill. I’ve watched war transform sentient human beings into boxes of freight. But I’m smarter now because I’m 42. Eighteen-year-olds? They have no business entering the military. On Jan. 2, 2006 The New York Times profiled Katherine Jordan, an 18-year-old Army recruit from rural Kansas who, when she’d enlisted a year before, had doubted the war would continue. Now she was preparing to ship off to fight in Iraq. Reading her comments emptied a pit in my stomach. “I don’t know the facts [about the war in Iraq] as much as I should,” said Private Jordan. “What I know is that we’re protecting our country still. We’re concentrating on keeping insurgents away from the United States.” Most 18-year-olds have lived their entire lives in the same community. Few have traveled abroad, held a full-time job or been forced by experience to understand that death means that you’re really gone forever and you’re never coming back and your body rots away and everyone stops talking about you. Fewer still comprehend that wars that are pumped up as glorious soon turn sour, that people come home without arms and legs, that veterans are forgotten and disposable and frequently sleep outside. Congress agrees that 18-year-olds aren’t mature enough to drink alcohol. Rental car agencies refuse to lease automobiles to 24-yearolds. Surely military service, in which a citizen may be ordered to blast people to bits with heavy ordnance, requires more maturity than consuming a Miller Lite or piloting a Ford Focus down an Interstate highway. Conversely, soldiers take extraordinary risks. They should possess sufficient life experience to understand and accept those risks before being permitted to undertake them. Congress ought to raise the minimum age of military service to at least 30. Not only do older recruits make better soldiers—ask any officer—they’ll be more realistic veterans after the fighting ends. MTW

By far the one Maui County liquor rule that chafes at local bars and restaurants the most is the prohibition against “over-service.” That’s the ever popular “Thou shalt not serve alcohol to someone who’s already intoxicated.” Licensees come up with all sorts of excuses why this rule is either unfair or impossible, and some of them make sense. They say some people can mask their drunkenness, making it difficult to tell when it’s time to say when. And they say it’s rare for the LC to present evidence showing conclusively that a customer was actually, undeniably intoxicated when he or she was served. But except on rare occasions—we’re thinking Moose McGillycuddy’s back in December 2005—the island’s liquor licensees never fight over-service accusations. They bitch and moan in private, but when it comes time to face the Liquor Control Board of Adjudication, they plead No Contest and suck up a fine. Case in point is the Sly Mongoose. A small, working class bar located in Lahaina’s industrial section, the Goose found itself on the wrong end of an over-service rap back in early 2005 when three of its customers wound up in an automobile accident. One of the passengers, who had a blood alcohol content of 0.19 and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. At first, Sly Mongoose owner Hana Rawlings opted to fight the charge. She appeared without an attorney at the August 2005 Adjudication Board hearing pleading Not Guilty to three counts related to the incident. But because the prosecution found itself unprepared to go forward with the case, the board very helpfully gave it a five-month delay. Had Rawlings brought an attorney, she could have forcefully argued that the board was showing preferential treatment to the prosecution and possibly got all the charges thrown out. As the months ticked by, Rawlings changed her approach. She fired the bartender who had been on duty the night in question and switched to a No Contest plea. But during her Jan. 5, 2006 hearing, she bungled her defense and never told the board she’d fired her bartender—a move the board loves to hear in these types of cases. Probably figuring she wasn’t serious about preventing further trouble, they fined her $2,000.

5 Marshals

Or, how you can play cowboy and shoot up the Old West right here on Maui

It was a scorching hot Saturday on the West Side. Driving into the Ukumehame Firing Range, I noticed a group of four men and one woman sitting and talking beneath the only shade around. Over on the left side of the range I saw three other gentlemen walking around what looked a stagecoach and prairie wagon as well as a series of low walls topped with sandbags. Everyone was dressed like a Wild West cowboy. I have to admit, they looked dapper. These are the Maui Marshals, the island’s only “Cowboy Action Shooting Group.” This may sound like some hokey gathering for people with too much time on their hands, but there’s actually much more to it.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a timed, competitive sport in which participants shoot a variety of targets. It requires a great deal of preparation and imagination, as participants must also choose an alias—an alter ego, really—that’s suitable for a character or profession in the late 19th century. This character can come from anywhere, including well-known Hollywood Western stars or entirely fictional characters. The only rule is that each participant has to have a different alias. From the characters I met that Saturday, that wasn’t going to be a problem. Some, like Darning Daisy and her husband Doctor Who, decided to do it as an activity they enjoyed together. Others like Lobo Negro, Bad Burt, Buckshot Slaughter, Longhair and Rolling Bird do it for the camaraderie and the chance to fire off single-action guns. And characters like Cyclone Drifter do it simply because it

gives him a chance to dress like an oldtime cowboy. After a participant has chosen a persona, he or she then has to find the proper clothing. This sounds staggeringly difficult for someone on Maui, but you’d be surprised at the number of commerical traditional western clothing suppliers on the web. Thrift stores are also an option when looking for ideas. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Levis, Wranglers and Lee denim or cotton work shirts with button fronts are simple styles of shirts worn in the late 1800’s. Outlawed are short sleeve shirts, modern feathered cowboy hats like a “Shady Brady” used in the 1970’s, contemporary shooting gloves, ball caps, tennis shoes and any designer jeans or clothes displaying logos. And come hell or high water, you better believe no varmint is going to wear any Velcro. When I saw Cyclone Drifter (obviously not his real name) on that Saturday, he was dressed mostly in black and wore a trimmed mustache. He had a pleasant disposition and spoke with ease. He spoke of his appreciation for western apparel and how much he enjoyed the sound of the bullets hitting the steel targets. In the beginning, he said, “I might not have shot too good but I looked good shooting.” The Maui Marshals are very welcoming to newcomers. Members are more than willing to support anyone who shows up on a Saturday, even if she shows up in a ball cap and tennis shoes. In fact, anyone who does show up is pretty much obligated to join in. And yes, even I had to when I showed up on that Saturday. Now—and here I have to make a small disclosure—most people might think that I would be pretty handy with a pistol since my father is the Maui Marshals’ Territorial Governo. But when I dropped by I was something awful. If I had to choose a period character to portray, I would prefer someone like Ethel Waxham, the teacher and poet of the Wild West who did very little shooting. But as A Cowboy’s Guide to Life says, “There’s no place ‘round the campfire for a quitter’s blanket.” The sport’s focus, the Marshals told me, is safety and fun. A lot of it is on safety, really. In fact, they said there’s never been a serious accident in the history of Cowboy Action Shooting. For instance, the ammunition they use is “downloaded,” meaning it’s a lighter weight and uses less powder than more traditional ammunition. That helps ensure safety when shooting at

steel targets. The Marshals use firearms distinctive to the period of roughly 1850 through 1890. Most are replica firearm. In all, they use single-action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles and pump or double barrel shotguns. The stages are set in well-known Old West styles like the saloon or outhouse. Participants will use all four of the above-mentioned firearms during the action. The steel targets are called “reactive” because they allow everyone to hear hits and misses. Basically, participants go through a course of fire using two pistols, one after the other, then they shoot the rifle and finally they take out the shotgun. The whole sequence is timed and precise scores are kept. The object is to go through the course and fire as rapidly and as accurately as possible. At one point on that Saturday I asked Lobo Negro to explain the whole action scenerio. His spurs jingled as he got comfortable and told me about the last State Annual Shoot, The Great Pineapple Roundup. “Well see, you’re sittin’ on the john and you look out the half moon in the door and you see some guys pulling into camp and they start messing with the cook,” he said. “And you don’t want anyone fooling with the coosie. So you holler through the half moon, ‘Stop messin’ with the cook.’ You then pick up your rifle, which happens to be next to you, and you blast 10 bad guys through the half moon. “You then see that there’s more trouble out there and so you run out of the outhouse and notice that there is a chicken on the ground that just hasn’t been cooked enough,” he continued. “So you grab the rubber chicken, put it in the pot and say, ‘This chicken needs cookin.’ Then you set your rifle down, pull out your pistols and shoot 10 more bad guys. You put those back in your holsters and when you notice there’s still more trouble a brewing, you pull out your shotgun and dust 10 more. And now the coosie’s safe, the chicken’s cooked and you can go about your business.”

doing their next match using Western-type guns. Slowly the outfits followed and then the rules began to form. Before they knew it, 65 registered shooters were competing. All shared a love of Old West history and a desire to carry on its traditions. By 1987 the worldwide membership organization known as Single Action Shooting Society (SASS)—based in Yorba Linda, California—emerged to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. SASS claims more than 60,000 members in all 50 states as well as in 18 countries. It has a monthly The Cowboy journal, Chronicle, and supports regional matches. Its board of directors, known as “The Wild Bunch,” enforces rules and procedures that ensure consistency and safety in all Cowboy Action Matches. On Dec. 29, 2005, the Marshals held their second annual Hawaiian Territorial Cowboy Action Shooting Championship at Ukumehame. It was a four-day shootout with the Side Matches on Thursday, the Main Matches on Friday and Saturday and the Fun Shoots on Sunday. As it turned out, the Maui Marshals’ own Darnin’ Daisy and her husband Doctor Who ended up as State of Hawai’i CAS Champions. It wasn’t easy, especially when an endangered Nene slowly flapped its way across the shooting range. “Cease Fire!” someone yelled over the gunfire. “Nene!” All shooting stopped while our Hawaiian State Bird slowly made its way across the course, stopping only for a moment on one of the berms to honk. Everyone silently watched the goose for a moment, and then one of the Cowboys smiled and tipped his hat. “Well, I guess we all know who’s runnin’ this show, don’t we?” he said. MTW

If you’d like to jump on the wagon with the Maui Marshals and become a SASS member, call Lobo Negro at 242-6024. Though every good cowboy knows that “When you’re tryin’ something new, the fewer people who know about it, the better.”

The sport of Cowboy Action Shooting began in 1981, formed by a man named Harper Criegh—aka Judge Roy Bean—in the equestrian-loving gated community known as Coto de Caza, located in Orange County, California. After being inspired by a few TV Westerns he rustled up some shooting buddies and suggested the idea of

Fish & Game Brewing Company is a unique place on the West Side. Very popular with tourists who want fine dining that isn’t unbelievably pricey, it’s also a well-known hang for locals, especially those who work in the service industry. I’ve spent many nights sitting at the bar sampling their various microbrews, chatting with friends or taking advantage of their late night menu of nachos, burgers and sandwiches. But recently I realized I’d never actually gone there and sat down for a normal Fish & Game dinner. I’d experienced the Brewing Company side of the place many times, but never yet indulged in the fish and/or game. So one night last week a friend who found himself in a similar predicament and I rectified the situation. As we browsed the menu, we were somewhat surprised to discover how much more extensive it is then the late night bar menu. Okay, I was—my friend’s been going there a lot longer than I have. Anyway, I was having trouble deciding between seafood dishes like the Garlic Clams ($12), Fresh Catch of the Day (Market Price) and the Thai Barbeque Shrimp ($24). But Anthony took no time in settling on the King Cut of the Prime Rib ($26). When our waiter returned with our drinks and to take our order, I went with my first instinct and ordered the Thai BBQ Shrimp.

Fish & Game Brewing Co. 4405 Honoapi’ilani Rd., Kahana, 669-3474. $$ As we enjoyed our beers—Bikini Blonde Ales, the night’s special ($3)—we took a moment to check out the crowd. The scene was definitely a bit different from their late night crowd and the opposite of their Wednesday Open Mic Night crowd. Instead of a throng of local 20 and 30somethings bouncing from table to table, there were elegantly dressed families on vacation spreading butter onto fresh rolls and listening to some light guitar music. Considering the crowd and relative complexity of the items we ordered, our food arrived rather quickly. My shrimp were served atop steamed vegetables, both smothered in a tangy barbecue sauce with just the right kick. It also came with a side of steamed rice carefully decorated with taro strings curls. The presentation was impressive and the food delicious. Anthony seemed to be equally pleased with his sizable cut of prime rib, which he pretty much devoured. So pleased, that when I asked him how his meal was, the only response I got was a smile and grunt between bites. When he was done, he said

Johnny Jones, Rotisserie Chef they cooked the thick slab of meat exactly right (medium). At first concerned about the decision to place the prime rib directly over the au gratin potatoes, he said a couple bites of flakey, cheesy potatoes convinced him it made no difference whatsoever. In other words, the food’s good. It’s no Open Mic Night, but if you want something more substantial than a plate of nachos at 12:30 a.m., there are few places better. MTW

Hemp Now! Saturday, 4-8 p.m. at Hapa’s in Kihei [POLITICAL RALLY] With very little fanfare, the state law that made it legal for Hawaiians to grow hemp expired back on June 30, 2005. But have no fear, hemp lovers: there are people right now— none of whom is Republican super-lobbyist/fraud Jack Abramoff, I believe—lobbying to get a new hemp law on the books. But they require money and support, political legislation being so time-consuming and expensive, you know. Anyway, you can help out this Saturday by showing up at Hapa’s for the big IHEMP Social. There will be plenty of hemp discussions, but also live music from Erin Smith, The Easy and Sirus B Posse. So go. I’m sure it will be hemptastic. Oh, and there’s a $4.20 cover charge. Get it? That is so hilarious. Just don’t forget the money. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Da Mayor Speaks Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at the Baldwin High School Auditorium in Wailuku

Keb’ Mo’

[STATE OF THE COUNTY ADDRESS] Alan Arakawa’s been Maui County Mayor since 2002. A lot’s happened since then: Wailuku redevelopment, coqui frog infestations, talk of a new trash incinerator and, of course, the Great Junked Car Crisis. Anyway, this being 2006 and all, Arakawa will be running for reelection in a few months. So what he says now about the state of the county and his plans for the future are rather important. The speech is free, but since they’re serving food after he gets through talking, his office wants people to reserve a seat by calling 2707710. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

[MUSIC] Combining folksy storytelling and traditional country blues with a contemporary twist of soul and gospel music, Keb’ Mo’ has become a legend in the modern blues world. Since his first selftitled album in 1994, he’s won Grammy Awards for contemporary blues album in 1997 and 1999. He’s made numerous television appearances, including all the major talk shows—Late Night with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Rosie O’Donnell—as well as Sesame Street and Martha Stewart Living. He’s composed scores and starred in Spunk and Lost Highway—he even portrayed Robert Johnson in the docu-drama Can’t You Hear the Wind Howl and was interviewed in Martin Scorcese: Feel Like Going Home. Of course, there’s also the music for series Boston Public, Melrose Place, Touched By an Angel and Felicity, as well as commercials for AT&T and Victoria’s Secret. And yet, in spite of all this, Keb’ Mo’ is low-key and reflective. In the title track of his latest album, Keep It Simple, he sings, “I don’t wanna be a superman, I just wanna go somewhere and use my hands and keep it simple.” Tickets: $30, $40, $45. Call 242-7469.

Higher Ground

[MLK MARCH] In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the African American Heritage Foundation of Maui will host a peace march and festivities, including potluck. The march begins at 10 a.m. in the Ka’ahumanu parking lot at Maui Community College, and will proceed down Ka’ahumanu Ave. to Hoaloha Park. Everyone is invited to express themselves through music, song, dance or poetry—just call 879-4748 to be included in the program.

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] I once watched a surf video on a wall. My boyfriend at the time was so excited that he’d purchased a projector we had to watch it. I thought his enthusiasm was somewhat childish, or maybe I’m remembering it that way because I resent him. Nonetheless, I was blown away. Seeing the skills of talented athletes always gives me goose bumps. And that was only a projection about four-by-six feet. Imagine what watching an intense winter sport video on the largest screen in Maui complete with surround sound could do to a girl. Yes, that’s right, keep imagining and I’ll leave you with a quote from Max Bervy, Higher Ground Producer/Director. “To achieve Higher Ground we set out to capture a select group of individuals in amazing locations, pushing their athletic boundaries. For mountaineer Dave Barlia it meant flying 10 feet off the ground, at 130 miles per hour, while wearing his winged suit on the slopes of Chamonix, France. For World Cup mogul champion and Olympic Gold Medal favorite Jeremy Bloom, ‘it was a life changing experience,’ when we invited him to heli-ski for the first time in the wild backcountry terrain of British Columbia.” Tix are $12 for adults, $10 for the keiki. Call 242-7469.

Red Riding Hood rides again On first look, this animated revamping of the Little Red Riding Hood story seems to farm the same well-tilled soil as the plethora of big studio animated features. Yet there’s much more of a rich homegrown quality to this little animated pearl that kicks with spicy zing emanating from its original songs. Anne Hathaway does her best little blasé Janeane Garofalo voice

Hoodwinked!

★★★★★ Rated PG/80 mins.

as Red, a bicycle-riding delivery girl for her Granny’s (Glenn Close) baked goodies. An unknown thief has been stealing pastries from around the forest at the same time that Red discovers a crossdressing wolf in her Granny’s bed. Screenwriter and co-director Todd Edwards caresses the fun with 27 brilliantly poppy songs that range in style from driving rock to hip-hop, funk, surf, country, folk, Bossa Nova, teen pop and inspired instrumental orchestral motifs. The soundtrack alone is enough to make the movie a winner. These Little Red Riding Hood characters are full of personality surprises. The movie opens with Red arriving at her Granny’s house only to confront the big bad Wolf wearing a Granny disguise that our quick-witted lass sees right through. Red questions the Wolf at length before the scene comes to an abrupt finale when her gagged and bound Granny pops out of the closet just as a Woodsman bursts in on

the cottage with his trusty ax. Detective frog Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers) arrives at the scene to weed through four interweaving testimonies told by Red, the Woodsman (Jim Belushi), Granny and the Wolf (Patrick Warburton). It’s soon revealed that the Wolf is not the drooling monster we traditionally think of, but rather a reporter researching the spate of bakery robberies. The Woodsman is really an actor rehearsing for a role as a Woodsman when he isn’t driving a schnitzel truck and Granny has a knack for extreme sports. Red has some kung fu moves up her sleeve that come in handy against some villainous humans with their own grudges against our snowboarding Granny. Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mountain) cinches the film’s enjoyable tone with a vocal characterization that breathes with comic life. Andy Dick does a neat vocal turn as a quirky bunny rabbit and Jim Belushi’s intonation is downright hilarious as pictured through the clumsy guise of the muscle bound Woodsman. The animation is state-of-the-art CGI that the filmmakers contain in a consistent palate of visual smartness. Cory Edwards, Tony Leech and Todd Edwards all did dual duties of scripting and directing the movie, and their euphoric collaboration carries an unmistakable stamp of unique talents working in harmony. The film’s cheerful songs are immediately memorable and infectious, and although the version that I screened was not in 3-D, Hoodwinked! is due to be released as a 3-D feature film. With or without the 3-D, Hoodwinked! is a clever screwball take on the Little Red Riding Hood fable that speaks to the kid in all of us. MTW

THE PRIZE WINNER OF DEFIANCE, OHIO(PG-13) - Drama - Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern star in this tale based on a true story of a 1950’s housewife, and mother of 10, who has a knack for writing commercial jingles. 99 min. (Heidi King)

New This Week HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. Looks cute. 81 min. (HK) THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama - Queen Latifah plays a quiet and reserved woman who, upon a visit to the doctor, thinks she only has three weeks to live. This news pushes her to take risks she normally wouldn’t. Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK) TRISTAN & ISOLDE – (PG-13) – Drama, Romance – So when I looked up this flick on Yahoo! Movies, I read the following sentence, written presumably to explain what the movie is about: “In the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde, young lovers become doomed against the forces of royal politics.” Okay, that makes no sense—grammatically or otherwise. From what I can tell, this is a love story about two kids who like each other, set in the time when they had knights and stuff. It “stars” James Franco and Sophia Myles. 125 minutes. AEON FLUX - (PG-13) - Action - In the future the seemingly perfect world is anything but and there is no freedom, only government control. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is the head agent of a rebel force and on the frontline of a secret fight. 125 min. (Gabrielle Poccia) CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN II - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Sometimes I think Hollywood just wants me to feel like a bitch for ripping on every movie released, because they totally set me up to do so! Many people enjoyed the first time around with Steve Martin playing the hapless father of 12—I wasn’t one of them. Now, we all know sequels usually aren’t as good as the originals. So I’m going to just keep my comments to myself. 94 min. (HK) CHICKEN LITTLE - (G) - Animated, Comedy Chicken Little is trying to mend his reputation. He’s already made an ass out of himself by falsely telling the whole town that the sky was falling and now is just trying to lay low. Unfortunately, he discovers that the sky really is going to fall and he and his misfit friends must get the whole town out of harm’s way. 96 min. (GP) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) Action-Adventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) THE FAMILY STONE - (PG13) - Comedy, Family - A Christmas flick chock full of movie stars. This one is garaunteed to make us all laugh, cry and walk out of the theatre holding hands. Maybe that’s taking it a step too far, but we’re definitely dealing with a predictable feel-good movie in the spirit of the holidays. 103 min. (HK) FUN WITH DICK AND JANE - (PG13) Comedy, Adventure - One day after being promoted, Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) realizes he’s in the heart of an Enron-like scandal. With no stable source of income, Dick and his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) are forced to sell off their beloved plasma TV. After a series of crappy jobs and no hope of a new flat screen, the couple embark on a full-blown crime spree. There’s a moral lesson in all this but watching the couple make asses out of themselves is much more entertaining. 90 min. (Ashley Fitch) GRANDMA’S BOY - (R) - So let’s see if this

rious geishas. As long as you don’t think too much about the implications of the actresses not being Japanese, the movie is entertaining in that Hollywoodepic kind of way. The cinematography and costumes are predictably gorgeous, and the villainess is deliciously wicked. 145 min. (Samantha Campos)

HOSTEL - (R) - Paxton and Josh backpack through Europe eager to make quintessentially hazy travel memories with new friend Oli, an Icelander they've met along the way. Paxton and Josh are eventually lured by a fellow traveler to what's described as a nirvana for American backpackers. which happens to be a particular hostel in an out-of-the-way Slovakian town stocked with Eastern European women as desperate as they are gorgeous. Oh-Oh! This is really too good to be true. Initially distracted by the good time they’re having, the two Americans quickly find themselves trapped in an increasingly sinister situation that they will discover is as wide and as deep as the darkest, sickest recess of human nature itself. Will they survive? (KLW)

MUNICH - (R)- Set in the aftermath of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, story follows a secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and kill the 11 Palestinians suspected to have planned the Munich attack--and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. ‘Big Ball of Sacrilege’ If Monty Python were a rock band, it would be the Nigel Mustafa Memorial Quartet

Call 242-show

NMMQ Thursday, Jan. 19, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz. Tickets: $10. Call 667-5299. Nothing’s worse than a rock band that takes itself too seriously. But have no fear—the Nigel Mustafa Memorial Quartet could never be guilty of that. A selfdescribed “music therapy group from St. Axle Center for the Criminally Retarded,” NMMQ fuses ska, hip-hop, metal, country and jazz, and deems their musical style as “Avant ‘Tard.” They’ve been together since 1998, releasing Little Box of Barf two years ago and are set to release Rankle Dankle Fish with Hands this year. Recently, I talked to lead vocalist Steven Parris, a.k.a. Father Victor Pickles of Sandwich. Maui Time Weekly: Describe NMMQ—how did you begin? Steven Parris: The band is sort of like this theater production and we kind of take on these characters. There’s the “real” story and then there’s this fictitious backstory [see www.nigelmustafa.com]. But the reality is that we’re all from an area north of Seattle and were playing in that scene for a while, and kind of remarked that, “Wow, that drummer’s really good. I’d like to jam with that guy!” or “That bassist is

really quite good” and so we just sort of began as everybody’s side project, until it was quickly realized that the other bands sucked in comparison. So we decided to go with the winning band. Do you ever run into opposition for your naughtier lyrics or off-the-wall stage personas? No. People seem to look at our big ball of sacrilege as something that’s non-malevolent. It’s so silly and absurd that really, there’s been no problems along those lines. Believe it or not, there aren’t that many songs—especially with our new material that is totally PG-13, all the way. That’s part of the evolution of the band. We’ve been really lewd and lascivious in the past. And now we are more clever and subversive. That’s kind of one of the things that you’ll see at the show. Yes, we’re very irreverent but we really don’t target anybody in particular. The biggest target is, of course, ourselves. You know what I’ve discovered, though? Just a really, nice, friendly, dry hump on the leg eases any tensions in the room. What are some songs on your new album? We think our big hit is a song called, “Rasta Ninja.” It’s basically about this guy who lives in Trenchtown, Jamaica, whose dreadlocks operate as nunchucks. He just kicks everybody’s ass. We’ve got another song called, “My Mom’s in Jail Tonight,” which is a true story, sadly. My mother is a convicted felon, and the first woman in the state of Washington to be convicted of felony stalking. And I’m very proud of that. Are you being serious? I’m dead serious. What’s funny is, in my personal life—aside from being Father Pickles on stage—I’m not a criminalistic person whatsoever. I mean, I’ve got a masters degree from NYU. But my mother just went off the deep end. And so some of that primordial frustration exerts itself on stage to the enjoyment of others. Especially during “My Mom’s In Jail Tonight.” The key lyric in that song comes at the bridge when it says, “I bet my mom’s playing cards and taking bets, making love through the bars to the guards for cigarettes.” Yeah, that’s quite touching… Nigel Mustafa is based on entertaining people—the thrust of it is to reach out to our audience and put on a good show. We’re not up there trying to look cool or trying to get chicks. I mean, we got those in spades! I mean, those are lined up at the back of the van when we’re loading in—I mean, that goes without saying, sister! MTW

MASON MCGRAW

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) The light that keeps your eyes focused on the road ahead, this week, might bring you into an interesting situation with long-lost friends and fire dancing. Your Earth element and fifth dimensional perspective shines more truth on the “argument”—or transition to another level, call it what you will—the neighbors are wondering if you’re going to work out. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) Meditation and disciplining your most primal instincts brings you to the conclusion once again that no matter if it rains or pours, your talent and gift to the world will shine brighter than ever. Did you know that Aquarians are recognized throughout time as the stars of the show? In other words, by not being so intent on bending and changing everything around you, the possibilities of being in the spotlight increase tremendously.

Monkey

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) The good things in your life right now are reflecting your psychic antennae. First you head one way, and then it’s the next. But how do you get both fish to swim in the same direction? Well, tune in next week. The feeling of intensity and excitement, simultaneously subtle and exhausting, will be extra strong—especially in your dreams. Calling an acquaintance and inviting them over to dinner could be a wonderful new start to a friendship.

Spankers

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) “Get on the good foot” (James Brown). So what are you going to do, you big baby? Just because you’re the youngest of all the signs, it doesn’t necessarily give you the mic to complain and whine about every possible wrongdoing in the world. You know you got what it takes to be one of the most magical lights in the universe so stick to the positive vibration, all the way. You know why those golfers in Kapalua right now are making the big bucks? Because they perform with excellent follow-through. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) And the next thing you know, SHAZAM! It’s right in front of you. These new visions you’ve been having—in your dreams and when you’re awake—have something to do with the future and how the end is really just the beginning. And you may be right but the whole world isn’t going to agree with you. Anyway, your natural beauty and love from your planet Venus will never cease to glow. Just remember, you are the Earth element, you are the mystery of life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) Have you ever been to the windy city? Home sweet home, Chicago. This amazing place booms with history and an incredible influence into the USA’s frame of reference. I have also heard Chicago called Chi-Town. I feel this amazing point to express to you, Gemini, how important it is right now in helping you pursue and practice Tai Chi. Have you ever thought about it? Making new time for new learning is major key right now. Please, go for it!

CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) The harder your shell, the harder you fall. Why not be a little friendlier this week? I know you might not be in the mood but can’t we all just get along? Sunlight dancing through the prism and colorful scattered light moves across the room in a moment of silence. And then the phone rings. This week is going to have a spicy and fiery flavor. Although, it isn’t like you didn’t expect it. The smile in your eyes is the sweetest light; we all thank you for your nourishment.

COCONUT WIRELESS

LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) This week is going to feel like the beginning a whole new world! What are you going to do? Believe it or not, you really do know the right decision in where to go. Whether it’s college or a new job, sometimes having to move is a real bitch. Well, the location is up to you but if you’re having a hard time deciding, really listen to your heart on this one and make it happen. Find out all the details and make your plan from there. It’s not about today; it’s about the next 10 years.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) You tend to let certain goals “make or break” you. This focus on the top of the pyramid is making you miss the entire pyramid. Everything in existence is moving and growing. Remind the universe of your strength of perfection and durability. Virgos have one of the strongest tolerances of just about anything. Solid as a rock, they can just keep on going. Just be careful who you take with you!

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) Sitting there on the sand all by yourself, no one else on the beach—do you feel lonely? Or are you happier alone? Something tells me you’re going to be very alone for some time but don’t be afraid; it might be just what you were asking for. There are other things for you to do other than focusing on someone else’s needs and desires. Go forward with your plan and take it to the next level. An Aries brings a fire of warmth and gladness.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) Do you remember the last time you went for a swim in the ocean? What’s stopping you? Getting too wrapped up in having to do this and then do that, etc. upon etc. could disconnect you from the bliss of Maui. Really, when will you get the time if you don’t stand up and just take it? Take life back into your own hands and discuss with your superiors your true desires at work, communicate your sincere expression of love to your family, and give yourself a greater appreciation of your life on this island.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) By finishing what you started in a timely manner and with plenty of energy to spare, you will know what it’s like to be a true Sagittarius. You are fire, baby! Passing Notes with Alex

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

Alex (a.k.a. “Grimes”) is one of my dearest high school friends—in fact, my grandma still asks about him—and we recently began corresponding again, after more than a decade of not. He now lives in Oakland, working as a warehouse manager and making documentaries with his wife, Eerie, their wee dog Cello and the ghosts that dwell in their flat. This is a sampling of some of the emails he’s sent me over the past year… Dear Sam, Ahhhh, the wonderful trap of Nostaglia. You lived in the desert, you know about mirages... Okay so I am itching to write, and I am overbooked as always, and I am waaaaaay behind at work, and I don’t want to be here I would rather be at home unpacking so I can get my life back to where I can write but before I do that I just want to be with my “roomie”—who I see seldom—and my doggie who is freaked out by the move and though it is great that she is developing intonations that sound a lot like “Grimes stay” when I am trying to leave it breaks my tiny black heart to have to come to this place where I find myself itching to write and I am so overbooked and waaaay behind at work and why did I agree to be in this wedding this weekend anyways? I have no time to go to my friend’s birthday party because I am going to my other friend’s going-away party and the whole time I am going to try to duck out early of both ‘cause my puppy with the Ewokian pout is scratching at the front door wondering when the hairless ape with the treats and the food will be returning... and I do miss you and I wish that I had a better sense of self when I was young and you were around and less an emotional spaz but not so unemotional as I am today and how’s that for nostalgia and anxiety all in one? And I was listening to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me last night as Eerie played it on the record player and sang along, and I thought of how much time was lost because I was so overbooked, and itching to write and waaaay behind... and I thought of the people that I made cry and I felt like a star snuffing black and I thought of what terrible and wonderful people we can be. And I thought I understood for a second but there was so much distracting me that I was pulled back into the desert. “You and I will meet again one day, under a night sky lit by soft black stars” This world is not for us... Love, Alex Ms. Campos, I have been thinking a lot about how men and women are wired so differently. It is remarkable to me and the more I ponder it, the wider the gulf becomes and the bottom sinks deeper still. It’s wild! I realize that I know even less than I thought I did about people. This gives me that horrible feeling you had as a kid at the start of the school year when you were overrun with people you are forced to interact with. It’s awful... too much to ponder... back to my tea. Deep thought is not only self-indulgent, it’s downright introspectively dangerous. Yours, Alex

Dearest Sam, I have the wandering death booked and have contacted the appropriate hookers in Paris to find me. I will need to borrow a manuscript or two—something juicy from your erotic collection that you are working on—so as to have people think I wrote it and then have it published posthumously. Then you can contest it and it will create more of a buzz about the work and me and you, and then you can make up stories about us and publish that. Turn it into a movie. Then Eerie can sue you. You both write a book about yourselves, me, us and that then gets turned into a movie of the week on Fox where Lou Diamond Phillips will play all three of us. You two get together to sue Fox and Lou. My name is back in the paper and somewhere in Springfield, IL, a 16-year-old will go to a Hot Topic and buy a T-shirt with a quote wrongfully attributed to me and a bad picture of me in Paris with some hooker taken just a few hours before I am found with your manuscript that is attributed to me that makes you sue... and she will remove the size label from the Hot Topic T-shirt and use it to light her cigarette that she will eventually put out using her arm. Having a terrible day... You? Signed, Me Samantha Campos raises a glass to all her friends, in every dive bar she’s in. MTW
