LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR WAILEA 670 WORRIES

Super Saver Special

Just a couple months ago, Charlie Jencks harrumphed and bemoaned county regulations impeding his ability to build affordable housing (“My Meeting,” Dec. 29, 2005). Today he wants to build luxury homes in Wailea, but ignore the county regulation requiring one in four of those homes to be affordable. Instead, “Two-Time” Charlie intends to donate to low-income apartment renters. This money will end up right back in the pockets of the rich apartment owners, the same folks who can afford those fancy luxury homes. It’s like a rebate for the rich. Meanwhile, the working class remains apartment renters instead of homeowners. If we’re going to build affordable homes, the best way to drive down prices is to take away the ability of real estate speculators to drive up costs post-construction. The county should require all residential subdivisions to follow the model that worked so well in Skill Village, Paia; for 10 years, no renters and no resale for profit. This ensures sales only to those folks who truly want a home. -Nick Rusnak, Paia The Editor responds: Actually, Jencks isn’t ignoring the county’s affordable housing rules. Out of his proposed 1,400 homes for Wailea 670, he’s said that 350 would be affordable. That’s one out of four. Of course, not all those 350 would actually be in the Wailea 670 area—he’s said about onethird would be elsewhere—but to be fair most developers do everything they can to make sure the affordable homes they have to build are far from the luxurious homes they desperately want to build. The real problem with Wailea 670—or

“Honua’ula,” as Jencks prefers to call it—is that the county as a whole can’t afford it. It’s a massive development coming at a time when other massive developments are popping up all over the island. Where’s the water coming from? Where are the corresponding expansions in roads and infrastructure? Jencks has the affordable housing angle fixed—he talks about it constantly—but it’s the rest of the package that bothers me.

FROG TALK Thanks to Maui Time Weekly for handling a story that was evidently too hot for others (“Infestation!” Jan. 5, 2006). Anthony Pignataro’s report on the coqui problem at Castleton’s nursery in Kihei was a great piece. It’s heartening to know that our mayor is doing what he can to solve this. Thanks for keeping us informed. -Warren Woodward, Kihei

This is for the girl who came into my business demanding cash for a $160 gift certificate that you received as a present. Obviously, you have no common sense since gift certificates aren’t redeemable for cash. But after I told you and offered several options, you started yelling. Then I had to look like the bad guy and ask you to leave, since I couldn’t very well have you standing there creating a scene in front of the rest of my customers. I’ve got to say that you really helped things by calling your mommy and daddy down to save you—that sure didn’t make an ass out of you when you still didn’t get your way. Look, I didn’t want to call the cops, but that seems to have been what it took to get you to leave. Maybe now you will understand that you can’t simply walk into someone’s place of business and start acting like a brat.

Democracy in Action Call 579-8320 or visit www.patientswithouttime.com. “We’re also hoping to register 20,000 Maui residents to vote as Democrats,” Murphy said. But even if they succeed, it’s far from certain that patients will have an easier time obtaining medical marijuana. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal government had the right to prohibit medical marijuana and prosecute patients for illegal drug possession and use even if states like Hawai’i permitted it. adult use. Private adult use would be lawful only in a private adult location and all safety regulations created for alcohol shall apply to marijuana. The later would create an allotment system allowing agriculturally zoned family farmers to grow and supply the medical needs of the community. The allotment system would be a farming program resembling the Tobacco Allotment system that was started during the 1920s to help struggling family farmers stay on their land. To prevent just anyone from suddenly deciding he’s a “family farmer,” anyone wishing to qualify for a medical marijuana allotment must create a five-year organic farm plan based on at least two organic crops. Licensed family farmers would be able to grow and cultivate up to six mature plants, 18 seedlings and 24 ounces of usable marijuana. This law would also tax and regulate the sale of marijuana for adult use, while directing the Maui Police Department to make investigating, citing and arresting individuals for private adult cannabis offenses its “lowest” law enforcement priority. Last June, PWT submitted a proposed ordinance to the Maui County Council. After receiving no response, the group went before Circuit Court Judge Joel E. August. Judge August didn’t order the Council to act, but he did remind Murphy of Article II in the Maui County Charter: “The voters of the county shall have the power to propose ordinances to the Council,” reads the charter. “If the Council fails to adopt the ordinance so proposed without any changes in substance, the voters may adopt the same at the polls.” Taking the two proposed laws before the voters this November is easier said than done. First, the group needs to collect 8,000 signatures—roughly 20 percent of the number of voters who cast ballots in the last mayoral election. They have until May to collect the signatures. Murphy said his group will canvass public meetings, rallies, special events and concerts, as well as people traveling down Kahului’s Dairy Road.

At the Patients Without Time (PWT) office in Paia last week, patients suffering from Cancer, Glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, chronic nausea, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn’s disease were streaming in like rain on a winter day in Seattle. For the last two years, the medical marijuana advocacy and advisory organization’s small staff has taken on the big job of helping qualified medical patients with their medical marijuana needs. Along with helping people get a Blue Card—the state’s license to legally use marijuana as medicine—PWT staff explains the different ways to ingest medical marijuana and advises patients on how to grow their own plants for medicinal use. At last count, PWT serves 680 patients. “Over 90 percent of Maui County medical marijuana patients cannot meet their own medical marijuana needs on their own,” said Murphy. “Most medical marijuana cardholders are too sick, or they do not have the knowledge or a secure place to grow their medical-grade marijuana. Patients with Hawai’i State Medical Marijuana issued Blue Cards need to be able to have an adequate supply of their medicine.” On the day I visited, PWT director Brian Murphy was busy trying to rectify that. Visiting with lawyers, accountants and various other medical marijuana advocates, he was learning how to launch a political crusade. On Jan. 13, 2006, Murphy and supporters—acting under the new group name Democracy in Action—submitted two proposed ordinances supporting efforts to reform state drug laws: “The Maui County Crime Reduction/AlcoholMarijuana Equalization Ordinance” and “The Maui County Compassionate Choice/Family Farmer Regulation and Revenue Ordinance.” The first would make it lawful for any adult at least 21 years old to use and possess one ounce of marijuana for private

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Jan. 6, 2006 press release about her releasing a $460,000 grant to the Hawai’i 3R’s program: “I am very proud to support this initiative that gets the community involved in a collaborative effort to repair and improve Hawai’i’s public schools.”

What she didn’t say: The state Department of Education needs nearly $500 million to fund and fix its 97 schools. That’s tough, especially since it’s far more important to get some tax cuts passed now, while we’ve still got an election year to worry about. But what if the administration just guilted taxpayers—who are already paying for the Department of Education—into doing the repair work themselves? That’s easy! Cheap, too!

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, JAN. 11 After two and a half years of asking, it looks like local schools will finally get drug-sniffing dogs. And our very own Lahaina Intermediate might be the first to get the crack-hunting canines. And it’s not a moment too soon. According to today’s Maui News, there’s been lots of “troublesome” activity at Lahaina Intermediate after hours, according to Principal Marsha Nakamura. Bad stuff, too, like “broken glass and rearranged bleachers and benches apparently used by skaters.” Man, if that doesn’t just scream Dope Epidemic, I don’t know what does. And students are getting busted for marijuana use left and right. Nakamura told the News that she’s already disciplined one student this year for smoking the reefer, on top of “two or three” last year. Now there are risks to simply running police dogs through the school, indiscriminately sniffing lockers and rooms: mostly, that some uppity, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)-loving parents will start questioning whether their son’s or daughter’s rights were violated. This doesn’t bother at least one school board member. “Don’t waste time,” said school board member Mary Cochran—one of the dogs’ original proponents—according to the Jan. 10, 2006 Honolulu Advertiser. “Go for it. What’s the worst thing that’s going to happen? You’re going to get your wrist slapped or you’re going to get sued.” That’s the spirit! Screw civil liberties attorneys or potential state Supreme Court decisions! Were talking broken glass and rearranged bleachers here! Somebody’s got to do something now!

night’s edition of Larry King Live during a “surprise” phone call. See, Winfrey obviously draws strength from Frey’s “redemption” from a fake life of crime, and presumably, his calling on people to “fuck the bullshit.” Well, that and strength and monster publicity. Oh yeah, this can only help both Frey and Winfrey.

FRIDAY, JAN. 13 THURSDAY, JAN. 12 Don’t you love it when Hana’s most famous landowner steps in it real good but still comes out looking good? Of course I speak of Oprah Winfrey, who’s having to answer tough questions about whether she should continue to tell millions of people to buy James Frey’s now-thoroughly disgraced “memoir” A Million Little Pieces about how he “redeemed” himself after many crimes and months in prison—virtually none of which seems to have actually happened. You mean to tell me that memoirs aren’t always completely factual? You mean there might be a lie or two in Richard Nixon’s voluminous ramblings? No! Of course, that doesn’t mean Oprah’s actions are anything other than completely shameless. “[T]he underlying message of redemption in James Frey’s memoir still resonates with me, and I know it resonates with millions of other people who have read this book and who will continue to read this book,” she said on last

SATURDAY, JAN. 14 So it looks like Maui’s population is going to double over the next decade. That’s right— according to Mayor Alan Arakawa, developers have an amazing 38,000 new homes and apartments planned or already approved for the island. “We’re going to have to look very seriously at how the community evolves and whether we want to look like New York City,” Arakawa said, according to The Maui News. This revelation was mentioned almost offhandedly 15 paragraphs into a 42-graph story about the 949 houses and apartments that make up Ma’alaea Mauka, which Ma’alaea Properties wants to build next to the Maui Ocean Center. If Arakawa’s right—and him being mayor and all, the chances are pretty good that he’s close to the mark—then Maui in 2015 will look very differ-

NEWS

ent from what it does now. Know all those hundreds and hundreds of acres of sugarcane draped over the central part of the island? Yeah, they’ll all be homes and strip malls at that projected rate of growth.

SUNDAY, JAN. 15 Well, maybe all that land will be built up—if Hawaiian Cement can cut a deal with the Teamsters so they won’t go on strike and all but terminate construction throughout the state. What’s remarkable here isn’t so much that Hawaiian Cement is the state’s sole cement importer, but that the number of Teamsters who would actually go on strike—they’re talking 12:01 a.m. this coming Thursday—hovers between 20 and 26. That’s it—a little over twodozen guys stop working, and suddenly no cement—the key ingredient in concrete—moves throughout Hawai’i. Leaving aside the labor demands and counter-demands driving the threatened strike, how on earth could things get to the point where there’s just one cement importer in the entire state? Especially since all this happened before. Granted, that was way, way back in 2004, but the strike was sufficient to put hundreds of construction guys out of work for months. Look, I’m as anti-development as they come, but this only having one cement company is stupid.

MONDAY, JAN. 16 Perhaps sensing trouble stemming from the bloody, increasingly fruitless war in Iraq that’s already killed 2,220 American soldiers and perhaps as many as a couple hundred thousand Iraqi civilians; the smoldering insurgency that will never end in Afghanistan; stories of U.S. troops beating and torturing prisoners; revelations of secret prisons in Eastern Europe; and massive, illegal spying on American citizens, the Pentagon has decided that the solution to its woes is that we’re just not laughing enough. So they went and hired Colonel James “Scotty” Scott, U.S. Army (Ret.) who works as a certified “laughter training specialist,” according to a USA Today story run in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. No, I’m serious: he goes around the country, teaching National Guard families “to laugh for no reason.” The idea being that the more the families are laughing, the healthier they’ll be and the less they’ll be worrying over their loved ones sent overseas.

TUESDAY, JAN. 17 Now that’s funny, but not quite for the reasons the Pentagon generals probably thought of when they dreamed up this wonder. Anthony Pignataro is currently finishing a memoir detailing how he recently overcame a painful, wrenching Triscuit addiction that nearly destroyed him. MTW

LC Watch Wristband Wonder

It seems strange now, but the whole case hinged on a wristband. The kid shouldn’t have gotten one, but he did, and it cost Casanova in Makawao $1,000. It happened the night of May 25, 2005—a Ladies’ Night as it was, and the place was packed. Standing in line at 10 p.m. was Dennett M. K. Hesia, 18, and he wanted to get inside. Somehow, according to prosecuting attorney Andrew Martin, Hesia managed to bypass the first doorman, whose job was to check patron IDs and proceed straight to the second doorman, who collected cover charges and handed out wristbands. Hesia paid his money, got his wristband, and went inside, where he drank three Heinekens. At the Jan. 5, 2006 Board of Adjudication hearing, Casanova owners Steven Segre and Steven Burgelin pled No Contest to one count relating to the incident (they dropped their earlier Not Guilty plea in exchange for reduced charges). They spoke of how Burgelin had spotted Hesia—who apparently tried to gain entrance to the club on a regular basis—in the parking lot shortly before 10 p.m., and had warned him not to try to get in on that night. They talked of how they felt Hesia had actually used a fake ID to get past their doorman—the police found only his legitimate ID on him when they arrested him later that night following a car accident—and they said both doormen would now be carding all incoming patrons, while four other bouncers patrolled the club and parking lot. They’ve also decided to begin using new wristbands—ones that can’t be removed with soap and water—that they found when they asked the Grand Wailea how they keep unauthorized people from dipping into their pool. It was a lot of effort, which the board recognized by not slapping Casanova with the $2,000 maximum fine.

Huge move down the chart this week for Monsanto, stemming from the Jan. 13, 2006 revelation from BusinessWeek Online that the giant GMO maker paid $60,000 to a ScrippsHoward columnist in exchange for a favorable book about biotechnology. The report says that in 1999 Michael Fumento asked Monsanto for the money so he could write a pro-GMO book “I’ve got to be honest,” he told BusinessWeek Online, “I told them them that if I tell the truth in this book, the biotech industry is going to look really good, and you should really contribute.” Fumento says he did nothing wrong, even though he never disclosed in the book or in any of the eight pro-GMO columns he’s written since then that he got cash from Monsanto. Scripps-Howard disagreed, and has terminated its relationship with Fumento, robbing the biotech industry and Monsanto in particular of one of its friendliest mainstream voices. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD FAMILY VALUES In December, according to police in Jersey City, N.J., Roselean Walker, 36, sat at one screen in a movie cineplex with her boyfriend while her 11-year-old son watched the longer Harry Potter film at another screen, but after her movie ended, she tired of waiting for the son and went home with the boyfriend to New York City. When police called her the next morning to come pick up the boy, she demanded that they drive him home. After officers ordered her immediately to the station, she showed up in a bad mood, threatening a lawsuit for the inconvenience, and wound up being charged with assaulting an officer, in addition to endangering a child’s welfare.

DADDY DEAREST According to the Nov. 10 Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., a father was under investigation by police after War Memorial Hospital reported an assault on the man’s 11-year-old son. Police said it appeared that the two were playing a video game, that the son had beaten his dad by using a secret upgrade that made his character more powerful, and that the dad, in anger, had spanked the kid, put soap in his mouth and slapped him several times in the head. The father said only that he had punished the boy for lying.

Judge Jack found that one plaintiff’s doctor, Ray Harron (who had given up his practice in order to interpret X-rays full-time, at $125 each), had detected asbestosis (but no silicosis) in all 1,807 X-rays he saw, and then, only a few years later, detected silicosis (but no asbestosis) in the same 1,807 X-rays.

Jin-Sheng is supposedly a leader of the branch of Qigong known as “Iron Crotch,” whose 60,000 adherents worldwide believe that strengthening the genitals increases energy. To warm up for the pull, Jin-Sheng had an assistant kick him hard between the legs.

And Landon McQuilkin, 21, arrested in November in Jacksonville, Fla., after he allegedly abducted a man and said he would kill him, relented to his victim’s “last request” to visit his girlfriend before he died; with McQuilkin waiting in the car outside her house, the victim went in, locked the door and called police. The Spice of Life On a journey with healer Dennis Prince By Jennifer Russo “The body is like a car,” he says. “It needs maintenance.” Dennis Prince, proprietor of Island Spice, explains that to be healthy, you have to keep yourself mentally clean and nourished, and that healing is a continuous process. He says every plant has a function, whether it’s anti-bacterial or diuretic or otherwise, and that you must

When he does detect negative energy lingering in the body he applies plant energies, known as “vibrations,” to kick-start you up and start drawing those vibes out. His father exposed him to spirituality early, and it’s a vital influence on all of his teachings. Spice is able to sense disturbances in your personality, spirituality and health, and can recommend positive changes to your whole being that includes a combination of spiritual exercise, vibrations and herbs. Most people seek counsel from him when they’re fed up with the medical industry and are determined to find a solution to their healthcare problems. Spice lives up in the mountains of West Maui, in a shack he constructed fromscraps. Living close to nature is something he feels he must do, as it helps him eliminate some of the mental baggage he collects while dealing with folks and their health. He tells me that he now operates primarily on an appointment-only basis for patients so that he can focus on some of his other important tasks this year. He’ll be tackling a book project, offering this dying art of healing therapies some immortality. He’s also focusing more on his clothing line that has an emphasis in surf apparel, called Island Spice Spiritual Surf Co. Actually, it’s this new merchandise idea that will be taking front and center as Spice develops a group of products designed to assist the traveling surfer, including an endurance formula, general cleanse, mosquito repellant, sleep aid and immunity formula. Back at the shop, I look around at the jars of herbs, Bearwood Bark, Wheat Grass, Fenugreek, Oak Wood, as well as the labels on the bottles of vibrations—Tuna Cactus, Pink Hibiscus, Humbleness. I am ready to begin my treatment. Spice tells me my left side is a bit atrophied by “darkness,” and my left arm is “weighed down.” He lights incense for aromatherapy. He asks if I feel a tightness in my throat. Also, he says I have a nervous

energy that travels down my spine. We get to the bottom of this by consulting my astrological chart and what Spice calls “God’s Cocktail.” We find that I have much Scorpio influence that could be creating that “jumping” energy in me. But plenty of Virgo offsets all this with much down-to-earth energy, creating the even keel I am commonly known for. Nevertheless, I want to be rid of this negativity on the left side so I try several “frequencies” in an original product that Spice has developed based on plant personalities. Each frequency embodies the vibrations and spirit of the plant. These have an immediate calming—then lifting—effect. To finish it off, he blows on my forehead to “clear out” the bad energy. With my eyes closed I am treated to images of haliconia, night blooming cirrus and swirling colors. And my tension is miraculously released. I leave determined to have this higher vibratory mindset and promise to report back with positive feeling. Easier said than done, as I am released from the herbal cocoon of his office back to the modern vibrations of paint fumes, traffic and work stress.

You ever notice how your dog sometimes just sits there, tongue hanging out of his slobbering jaws, eyes half-closed, seemingly gazing out at nothing at all and sometimes for hours? Well, give your canine companion some slack! He’s just meditating. In fact, James Jacobson, author of How to Meditate with Your Dog (along with coauthor Kristine Chandler Madera), calls this zoned-out state the “Hound Lounge.” And you can get in on it, too, if you want. You’ve always heard how meditation is good for you—reduces stress, depression, anxiety, plus increases focus and all that—so why not include your bow-wow buddy? To get started, Jacobson encourages you to schedule a regular time with your dog, develop a ritual and let go of expectation. Have your dog sit next to you or on your lap, then put one or both hands on your dog, synchronizing your breathing. But don’t get discouraged; meditation— whether you’re canine or Homo sapiens— takes practice. Plus, Jacobson says it’s an excellent way to strengthen your bond. “Becoming more dog,” he writes, “can give us a whole new leash on life.” MTW

Chef M a rk E llma n’s

I’m all for vegetarianism

The Food Choice is Yours Talking with Gene Bauston about bad farming Gene Bauston is the co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, a New York-based vegan organization boasting more than 100,000 members. The group is currently regarded as the nation’s largest farm animal rescue and protection organization. On Jan. 18, Bauston spoke on the relationship between farm animal slaughter practices and society as a whole at the Cameron Center as part of the Vegetarian Society of Hawai’i’s monthly lecture series. Recently I had the chance to talk with Bauston on his thoughts about food and food choices. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why did you start Farm Sanctuary in 1986?

GENE BAUSTON: At the time not much attention was being given to farming practices. As I began visiting farms, I noticed the alarming number of animals being disposed of in trash piles. One day I noticed a sheep named Hilda lying passed out but alive on top of a mound of dead farm animals. She was being transported in a truck with many of the other animals in the pile when she passed out due to the poor conditions. The owners thought she was dead so they threw her in their dead pile behind the barn. I took her home and nursed her back to health. Since then we’ve continued to rescue farm animals in need. What are your thoughts on eating local and/or organic foods? Food choices affect our health and wellbeing. They also have a direct effect

on farming, farmers, other producers and policies. When you buy organic or local foods you are supporting people concerned with the quality of their product, the treatment of their animals and their impact on the environment. Everything you eat has a significant impact— not just on your body but also on your surroundings, which is why we encourage people to adhere to either a vegetarian or vegan diet. Have you always been a vegan? I’ve been a vegan since 1985. I grew up in L.A. eating meat like most people. As I got older and became more informed through reading and talking to people on farms and about farming, environmental pollution and work standards, I naturally gravitated towards a vegan diet. There was also a day during this transition when I saw a dead chicken lying on its back with its legs in the air and I decided, “I don’t want to eat that anymore.” What are your thoughts on organic meat? With the growing concerns over Mad Cow [Disease] and other pathogens, more people are turning to organic meat. It’s definitely better than industrially farmed meat. Each time you substitute organic meat or vegetables for industrially farmed meat that’s a step in the right direction. Like I said before, we advocate a vegan lifestyle because we think it’s best but everyone needs to make their own decision. There’s no right answer for everyone. It’s more important that you’re conscious of what you eat than whether or not you’re a vegan or vegetarian. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Buddhism Live! Friday through Sunday at the Maui Dharma Center in Paia [BUDDHIST TALKS] It’s not every day that a couple Buddhist scholars drop by Maui for a friendly chat. Which is why you don’t want to miss Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, two of the hottest and most respected Buddhist teachers currently on the lecture circuit. The former is a Mahamudra yogi guru master while the later is a Nyingma & Kagma Schools of Tibetan Buddhism scholar. They’re hosting a ton of sessions, too: the whole thing kicks off Friday night, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon and then again from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you just go for the evening session, they’re suggesting a $20-40 donation; $35-75 for the fullday jobs, depending on how long you’re there and how much you get out of it. The Maui Dharma Center is located at 81 Baldwin Ave., in Paia. For more information, call 579-8076 or visit www.mauidharmacenter.org. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Clements-ism Friday-Saturday, 7:30-9 p.m. at The Studio Maui [SPIRITUAL COMEDY] Ever wonder about your life? What to believe when it comes to belief? Contemplate what the world is going to be like when our children, nieces, nephews and grandkids get older? Sometimes I think, “Damn. My ancestors-to-come are really going to have it bad.” Human rights activist and former Buddhist monk Alan Clements has some ideas. He’ll be exploring the answers to these questions and more. But don’t get the notion that it’s all going to be serious. Actually, here’s a quote from an interview he did for Shared Vision Magazine: “Someone needs to do a workshop for men on how not to think with your balls, but no one would come, no pun intended.” Now that’s a belief I believe we can all share. $15 suggested contribution. You’re Jiggling, Baby Prenatal Belly Dance offers preparation for moms-to-be

Start dancing, baby! In my journey through pregnancy, I’m on the last leg. With birth a mere three weeks away, I’ve been preparing with research and classes, trying to find that elusive solution to the fear and pain of springing my offspring. When I heard of Zoe Weston’s class “Prenatal Belly Dance,” I thought it would be more about fitness than childbirth preparation. So I headed to her lesson in anticipation of a good workout and an opportunity to dance and shake my hips—something that’s been impossible with such a big belly.

I’ve always enjoyed dancing. And I’ve also known shaking my moneymaker was going to get me in a world of trouble—nine months of trouble, that is. My daughter was conceived over a fun night of dancing and music. Dance has been an expression of sensual seduction since prehistoric times. But from Weston’s class, I also learned dance can be a pathway to natural, painless childbirth. Weston is a petite girl, married with no kids. But she is a tireless researcher and supporter of pregnancy and birthing, offering prenatal yoga, HypnoBirthing lessons and her services as a doula. She began her work on the topic over 10 years ago in preparation of starting her own family, along with anthropology studies and dance practice. In her belly dance class I learned that as I practiced these moves, I was actually preparing myself for a more relaxed and pain-free birth. Belly dance is an ancient form of childbirth preparation, strengthening muscles in the belly and legs that come in handy during labor. During a recent class, music filled my ears as we practiced six main moves, hip circles, figure eights, undulations, rib cage isolations, hip hits and pelvic circles. It was cool and rainy outside but I was working up a sweat without lifting my feet off the ground. In belly dance most moves are isolations, which are cleverly low-impact and pregnancy appropriate. Class lasts for about an hour, with warm up and cool down periods. I could physically feel how these dance moves were strengthening my belly and hips. But Weston reminded me that dance and music also help to relax your body and mind, important in easing labor. “Pregnancy and labor is not a medical condition,” Weston said. “It is a natural function. Women have been giving birth for years without hospitals. It is the fear of the unknown, the flight or fight factor, that makes it painful.” I left the class with a new high on birth and several new methods on easing labor, as well as a dance tip for helping induce my pregnancy should I become overdue. “It’s never too late to began preparing,” said Weston. “I even helped a lady who came in at nine months, weeks overdue. I showed her how to do some pelvic circles, which can help you if you’re late. She was elated that her labor began after practicing some at home.” While I’m hoping for an early, painless and quick labor, others might be interested in taking classes from Weston for their prenatal preparations. You will find her at www.zoeweston.com, email zoe@zoeweston.com, or phone for her latest class schedule at 808-387-1980. MTW

Glory Road tells the story of the first all African-American starting lineup of basketball players, at Texas Western College in 1966, as led by their groundbreaking coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas, Undertow). Debut director James Gartner struggles with solidifying the film’s socially explosive period aspects against the exacting demands of recreating a season’s worth of hair-raising basketball games surging toward the 1966 NCAA tournament.

Glory Road

★★★★★ Rated PG/106 mins.

Josh Lucas excites the screen as Coach Haskins, but is frequently upstaged by the talented ensemble of upstart actors that include Derek Luke, Mehcad Brooks, Al Shearer and Damaine Radcliff. Jon Voight delivers a remarkable performance as University of Kentucky’s bigoted coach Adolph Rupp. Entertaining and cathartic in spite of its faults, Glory Road fills an important gap in sports history. Texas Western College is now called the University of Texas at El Paso, and it’s easy to imagine that Don Haskins’ color-blind basketball coaching contributed in some degree to the school’s name change. For their part, screenwriters Christopher Cleveland and Bettina Giliois do an admirable job of capturing the turbulent

social atmosphere of racism that plagued the young African American basketball players whose game skills exceeded those of their rivals. It’s too bad that the director, James Gartner, doesn’t know how to frame and layer the on-the-court action so that it resonates against the rest of the movie. Most surprising is the sloppy editing from the estimable John Wright (The Hunt For Red October) that turns the finale game of the movie to a kind of fast-forward pulp accented by some glaring continuity mistakes. Here is a movie that should and could have been every bit as invigorating and satisfying as Gavin O’Connor’s Miracle (2004) which layered its Olympic hockey story with a full range of character emotion, social context and sports action. James Gartner lets us feel some of the vehement hatred and abuse that these African American Basketball players suffered, but we don’t get enough of their expression against it. There is a brief period when the black players on the team shun the white players during a game, but we don’t see the decisiveness in their eyes that portrays their inner crisis because the director doesn’t know how to incorporate close-ups into the sequence. The movie ends with a credit sequence that’s balanced with commentary from the real-life Don Haskins and several of the actual Texas Western players who contributed so famously to opposing segregation in college basketball during that amazing NCAA season in 1966. The closure helps to compensate for the personal revelation that the film lacks. MTW

I’m wondering what happened to the half Lichen half Vampire guy? watching the couple make asses out of themselves is much more entertaining. 90 min. (Ashley Fitch) GLORY ROAD - (PG) - Sports, Drama - Just in time for March Madness, this is the story of Texas Western College, the first school in college basketball history to field five African-American starters, and the troubles they encountered on their way to the NCAA finals. Stars Josh Lucas and Derek Luke. 106 min. (Anthony Pignataro) GRANDMA’S BOY - (R) - Comedy - So a 36-year-old video game slacke, has to move in with his grandmother and her roommates. And, of course, he tells all his friends that he lives with really hot babes. Nice. Hey loser, get a job. (KLW) HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family - Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. It looks cute. 81 min. (HK) HOSTEL - (R) - Thriller, Horror - Paxton and Josh backpack through Europe eager to make quintessentially hazy travel memories with new friend Oli, an Icelander they've met along the way. They’re eventually lured by a fellow traveler to what's described as a nirvana for American backpackers. which happens to be a particular hostel in an out-of-the-way Slovakian town stocked with Eastern European women as desperate as they are gorgeous. Oh-Oh! This is really too good to be true. 95 min. (KLW) KING KONG - (PG13) - Action-Adventure - In a massive jungle on Skull Island, creatures from prehistoric times have been protected and hidden for millions of years. But a group of nosy filmmakers discover a giant gorilla so, of course, they have to go on a great-ape search. Their greedy quest puts them up against not only Kong but his dinosaur enemies, too. Starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody. 187 min. (KLW) THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama Queen Latifah plays a quiet and reserved woman who, upon a visit to the doctor, thinks she only has three weeks to live. This news pushes her to take risks she normally wouldn’t. Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - (PG13) - Drama - Based on the bestselling book by Arthur Golden about the journey of a peasant girl into one of Japan’s most notorious geishas. As long as you don’t think too much about the implications of the actresses not being Japanese, the movie is entertaining in that Hollywoodepic kind of way. The cinematography and costumes are predictably gorgeous, and the villainess is deliciously wicked. 145 min. (Samantha Campos) MUNICH - (R)- Set in the aftermath of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, story follows a secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and kill the 11 Palestinians suspected to have planned the Munich attack--and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. silver screen. Basically, two dudes try to make money off the inverstors of their play by creating a flop. I was sold as soon as I found out Will Ferrell has a part. I love that man. Also stars Uma Thurman. 134 min. (HK) THE RINGER - (PG-13) - Comedy - This has all the makings of the greatest film of the year—maybe even the decade. Johnny Knoxville plays some guy who decides to enter the Special Olympics by pretending to be stupider than he actually is. Gold! 100 min. (AP) RUMOR HAS IT - (PG13) - Comedy - Kevin Costner plays a guy suave enough to seduce a beautiful woman (Jennifer Aniston) as well as her mother...and grandma?!? Ew. Emotional distress ensues. 97 min. (HK) TRISTAN & ISOLDE - (PG-13) - Drama, Romance - So when I looked up this flick on Yahoo! Movies, I read the following sentence, written presumably to explain what the movie is about: “In the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde, young lovers become doomed against the forces of royal politics.” Okay, that makes no sense— grammatically or otherwise. From what I can tell, this is a love story about two kids who like each other, set in the time when they had knights and stuff. It “stars” James Franco and Sophia Myles. 125 min. (AP)

AEON FLUX - (PG-13) - Action - In the future the seemingly perfect world is anything but and there is no freedom, only government control. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is the head agent of a rebel force and on the frontline of a secret fight. 125 min. (Gabrielle Poccia) CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN II - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Sometimes I think Hollywood just wants me to feel like a bitch for ripping on every movie released, because they totally set me up to do so! Many people enjoyed the first time around with Steve Martin playing the hapless father of 12—I wasn’t one of them. Now, we all know sequels usually aren’t as good as the originals. So I’m going to just keep my comments to myself. 94 min. (HK) CHICKEN LITTLE - (G) - Animated, Comedy Chicken Little is trying to mend his reputation. He’s already made an ass out of himself by falsely telling the whole town that the sky was falling and now is just trying to lay low. Unfortunately, he discovers that the sky really is going to fall and he and his misfit friends must get the whole town out of harm’s way. 96 min. (GP) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) Action-Adventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) THE FAMILY STONE - (PG13) - Comedy, Family - A Christmas flick chock full of movie stars. This one is garaunteed to make us all laugh, cry and walk out of the theatre holding hands. Maybe that’s taking it a step too far, but we’re definitely dealing with a predictable feel-good movie in the spirit of the holidays. 103 min. (HK) FUN WITH DICK AND JANE - (PG13) Comedy, Adventure - One day after being promoted, Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) realizes he’s in the heart of an Enron-like scandal. With no stable source of income, Dick and his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) are forced to sell off their beloved plasma TV. After a series of crappy jobs and no hope of a new flat screen, the couple embark on a full-blown crime spree. There’s a moral lesson in all this but

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama, Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? It’s a tale of the issues people face due to the blind hatred of society. It’s going to be a romantic and touching tear jerker. The title could be referring to the back breaking struggles the characters are forced to face. But, let’s be honest, we’re all thinking it means these two are breaking each other’s backs in the sack. I’m sorry, but it had to be said. 134 min. (Heidi King) CAPOTE - (R) - Drama - The Hollywood version of the true story of writer Truman Capote. In 1959, a family was murdered in a small Kansas town. Capote was sent to write a piece for The New Yorker magazine and ended up getting more involved than he expected by be-friending the murderer. Moral dilemmas galore! 110 min. (HK) END OF THE SPEAR - (PG13) - Drama - There’s a lot of drama this week isn’t there? Okay, so another “based on a true story” movie. This one is where some missionaries go to help an Amazon tribe. The tribesmen kill them and later one finds himself involved with the family of one of the missionaries. Twisted. 112 min. (HK) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - ActionHorror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampyvixen Selene, the vampire heroine who realized in the prequel she was fighting against the wrong evil. But with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) at her side, they battle against this ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Oh, the agony! The heartache! The torture of being a vam—I mean lyca—er...hmm. 106 min. (Tallia Monterroso)

ASTROMANA

We DO IT Because IT FEELS GOOD!

MASON MCGRAW

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) One of the coolest traits about you Capricorns is your strong interest in art. I love how you take time out of your busy schedule to do something artistic. But why not bring your friends with you? Now is an excellent time to organize a meeting place, have everyone bring their supplies and really do something creative in a supportive and cooperative way. Let your selfless leadership shine this week and really have some fun. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) If you have a problem with the way you look or feel about yourself, don’t hide anymore. Now is the time for you to say, “I love myself! I love my body!” Step into the spotlight and let your energy shine. There are lots of things to do and see, so remember how to keep it all within your budget. Because it’s not about today, it’s about the next 10 years. Going for a walk will bring a cool, insightful melody that’s sure to enchant and bloom these new ideas and plans for the future.

Monkey

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) Would you quit your job if your astrologer said it was a good idea for Pisces this week? Or maybe look for a new love because the column states in black and white that a new hot stud or sexy lady is right around the corner? Oh, please! The truth is you are a very easily persuaded sign, known for your emotional instability. But it’s time to listen to the conflict within and face it—go right up to it and talk it out with yourself. If you feel in your gut you should not do something, then don’t.

Spankers

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Well, my fellow Aries, what can I say? Enjoy every day the best you can, no matter who gives you shit or puts you down. Don’t ignore the ignorance in the world, be love, but don’t try and change or fight them. Respect is key. There’s a snowball effect happening everywhere I look, and money is changing everything, for the worse. Unlock the hearts to all humans and bestow the powers of one love. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You are so strong and patient, waiting for the right moment to put your hand in theirs and explain how you really feel. That certain special someone is ready for you to make the first move. It is up to you to decide what you’re going to do about it. As your astrologer and friend, I simply point to the road of complete honesty and respect. Go forward with grace and continuous strength. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) No matter who you were yesterday or how you’ll feel tomorrow, self-control is key. Being able to control your emotions to a level of professionalism is major important. If you need more definite advice, you can email me anytime. But your gift of communication is the essential bliss you carry with you at all times. Think before you speak and look before you leap. You will land on your feet if you understand the finish line of a goal and how to accomplish it. A little bit at a time in the right direction goes a long way. CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) Your presence in the classroom brings a sense of discipline and time management. Going the extra mile could just put you in first place. But are you ready? Of course you are! Step up to the plate and really let your colors shine! Holding on to an old love is not a good thing right now. Remember, an ex is an ex for a reason. Time to move on. LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) Most Leos are a bit catlike; they love to eat meat, take naps and lay in the shade on the grass next to the beach under a bunch of trees. They’re also famous for their brilliance in completing The Game. Once the rest of the crew thinks it’s over and time to hang up their jersey, Leos are up and blazing—burning their fire throughout the night. Vive le meow! VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) There are only so many teachers in the schools, and I believe it is very much up to the leadership of the Virgo to put your foot down and really strive to do your best at helping others understand the true quality of life, and how to enjoy it. We are talking about saving the U.S. from destroying itself with greed and disrespect! How can you be of assistance? LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) Dear, dear Libra. Why won’t you learn? It’s time to really get serious with your life and throw all distractions gently to the past. You do remember all those fun nights you had and the lovely nights you don’t remember, but others do. Well, it’s time to move on and get ready for the Year of the Dog. Smell the flowers but don’t be late for work. I love to hear the sound of your laughter but if you don’t get cracking, you’ll be homeless! SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) The cool waters of your emotional balance hold you gently in the calm before the storm. Unless someone really makes you angry, you have complete control. So let’s work on this. Keeping your cool no matter what is how you get to the next level. Go outside and warm yourself in the sun to begin the new day with your feet on the ground. Sleeping closer to the earth is a good way to rejuvenate your energy supply. SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) When another door closes, a new one opens. There will be plenty of opportunities this week to do something new. There are so many distractions in the world; people are losing sight of their happiness and self-control. Don’t let this happen to you. No matter what is going on around you, don’t be afraid of saying no to something you know is not good for you or don’t want to do. MASON123LOVE@YAHOO.COM

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

Cheers to Lucille! Here’s to the lady who dresses in black She always looks good and never looks slack And when she kisses, she kisses so sweet She makes things stand that have no feet! - Grandma’s Toast It was the shakiest take-off I’ve ever experienced. It’s usually my favorite part about flying but this time, my heart dropped as the plane shook and loudly rattled its way up into the sky. And as I stared at the seats in front of me, seams were frayed, the vinyl looked worn and the tray was covered in pen doodling—the cabin had definitely seen better days. So it was no surprise when I heard one of the flight attendants tell one of the passengers, “This is the last run for this plane. When we land in L.A., they’re going to retire it.” For some reason, this knowledge comforted me. Actually, I suddenly felt something like sympathy for the airplane. Here it had transported hundreds, probably thousands, maybe even millions of people—couples on their honeymoon, families on vacation, kids going to college—and now it was just going to be dropped in the boneyard, left like just a pile of metal scraps and unusable parts. And I know it’s absurd but I began to cry. I thought of what it would be like seeing my grandma in the hospital—the sole focus of this trip back home. I started thinking about all the years of past visits with her. How she helped me make clothes for my Barbies. How every Christmas, she made me a new robe with slippers to match. How there were always pies in the kitchen, no matter what time of year. And how I could never possibly have enough to eat of her cooking. How she would endlessly ask me to sit down at the organ and play her something. How she always had a few art projects in progress, though she would never call it “art”—they were just things she was “throwing together.” And she would always teach me a new card game, proudly including me in gin rummy when we went to visit her many friends. How when I got older, she took me thrift store shopping and helped me find the coolest vintage wear from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s without ever making me feel weird. How she took me to fabric stores, had me help her pick out patterns and taught me to sew. How she had dozens of jewelry boxes filled with sparkly delights, which she would dip into and offer me casually, every time I stopped by. How she was always so elegant, sophisticated and appropriate—how she never went out without her classic silvery white “updo” and makeup, her clutch and pumps with matching accessories, which made it all the more fun when she ordered her second Scotch on the rocks and would say, “Well, you can’t fly on one wing!” How she had a toast for every occasion. And I reflected on how she might be feeling now—possibly lonely, afraid, confused. Most likely, knowing her, she will be simply trying to find her place in an unfamiliar environment, struggling to exist with the increasing pain of getting older, and yearning for the time when she can just once again peacefully enjoy her days visiting with friends and family, and telling racy jokes with that twinkle in her eye. So I was sitting in this plane about to be retired, and as it cruised high above the clouds, I settled in with an almost subconscious looming dread. But eventually I relaxed, becoming more comfortably determined with the hope of a safe landing and the resignation of accepting whatever fate nature—and time— bestows. Samantha Campos would forgo world dominance, astronomical wealth and greater cell phone reception in Haiku, for just one more afternoon swilling Scotch with her grandmother. MTW
