‘You Have Any Enemies?’ Domestic terrorists attack freedom of the press do, I believe, to keep people I care about safe for the time being.” Blake understands. “Corey’s life really is in danger,” he says. The terrorists have won. Somewhere Ari Fleischer, the Bush Administration spokesman who warned that Americans “need to watch what they say, watch what they do,” is laughing. Hutchins, who has worked many weeks without pay to get Columbia City Paper off the ground, has been hit hard by the fire. If you’d like to help him get back on his feet, you can send donations via the Internet service PayPal to coreyhutchins@gmail.com. If you’d like to save a free press, write your Congressman. MTW

On Dec. 31, 2005 the editor of the Columbia City Paper in South Carolina returned from a trip to find that someone had attempted to burn down his house. “Someone had taken all the jackets out of the hall and thrown them on the stove,” Corey Hutchins told the Associated Press. “They turned the stove on and threw liquor bottles on the fire. Then they went upstairs and set fire to my bed, and came back down and threw library books on the fire on the stove.” Fortunately for Hutchins his arsonist was less than fully competent. His home sustained only minor fire and smoke damage. He noticed something disturbing. “Nothing was stolen. No money, no computers, guitar equipment.” Columbia police believe that the fire was set to send the scrappy alternative newspaper’s editor a message. “You have any enemies?” Hutchins recalls the police officers on the scene asking. “I paused, said I was the editor of the Columbia City Paper. They just nodded, spit out their tobacco, told me ‘well, someone’s mad at you.’” The FBI has opened an investigation. The paper is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist(s). This domestic terror attack is a direct assault on basic American civil liberties— more so than 9/11, which was not, contrary to President George W. Bush’s assertion, carried out because “they hate our freedoms.” The freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment, voluntarily ceded by newspaper editors and television news producers across the country, has found its Ground Zero in a despicable act of terror in Columbia. But most “journalists” remain oblivious. Hutchins and publisher Paul Blake

describe a mixed reception to their newspaper since it began publication last August, offering a “liberal angle in a city choking with conservatives.” (Full disclosure: Columbia City Paper publishes my cartoons and this column.) Immediately unleashing a fierce barrage against entrenched power structures, City Paper broke the story of a sexual discrimination lawsuit at the University of South Carolina, and published the Governor’s home phone number on a front page urging him not to sign off on the nation’s 1001st modern-era execution. Their reportage hits close to home. “The crime reporting is a big deal around here,” says Hutchins. “People can’t believe we’ll print a wife beater’s address block in the paper.” This is just the sort of take-no-prisoners journalism that Americans crave but rarely see. The citizens of Columbia have responded. City Paper has become a must-read, already profitable in an industry where others are being forced to fold. But not everyone is supportive. Blake calls the refusal of some local businesses to distribute the City Paper “a censorship problem.” Angry letters and e-mails, including threats of violence, have followed controversial stories like a recent feature story filed from Iraq. “I get phone calls where grown men are in tears over an anti-Bush piece,” says Hutchins. Now a homegrown terrorist has turned to violence to attempt to shut them up—and down. Here, undeniably, is someone who truly “hates our freedoms.” And the silence of the Right—from local Republican politicians on up to the White House, sends a strong message of tacit consent. Hutchins is certain that the arsonist was politically motivated. “Whoever did it didn’t even go into my roommate’s room,” he notes. “I’ve lived in this town for four years, I’ve never made any enemies as far as I’m concerned.” The editor has resigned out of concern for his roommates’ safety. “It’s the best thing to

In 1776 Washington’s soldiers were clothed with thread spun from hemp fibers....

What she didn’t say: Can you tell there’s an election coming up? Can you? All those years she spent on the Maui County Council and in the Mayor’s office, to say nothing of three full years as Governor, and now is suddenly the right time to start spending money on a Kihei-Upcounty road? Ironically, this may backfire on her—build that road, and quaint little Upcountry won’t be so quaint anymore, what with convoys of rentals choking Ulupalakua and Kula. Of course, the trade-off is that it would now be a breeze for locals to flood the Wailea resorts. Sounds like a beautiful situation to me.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18 On a day when so much is big news: Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa presents his funding priorities to the state legislature; state officials call for 15,000 more affordable homes; GoldenPalace.com pays $25,000 for Captain Kirk’s kidney stone—I’m going to focus on Gladys Baisa’s announcement that she wants the Upcounty County Council seat. Who’s Gladys Baisa? Everyone knows Gladys Baisa—until she recently retired, she’d worked for 21 years as executive director of the non-profit Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO), which provides social services for the county’s neediest residents. A diminutive, extremely friendly woman who always seems to smile and seems to get along great with just about everyone who holds power on Maui. Public officials love her. Police officers love her. Developers love her. Everyone loves her. And for that reason, she will absolutely slaughter anyone who tries to run against her for the seat, currently held by Charmaine Tavares, who’s termedout and considering running against Arakawa. I mean, no offense to Baisa, but she will massacre her opponent(s). Won’t even be close.

THURSDAY, JAN. 19 Not now—moving.

FRIDAY, JAN. 20 So Big Ed Case (D, Hawai’i) wants to leave the little old House of Representatives and get a seat in the mighty U.S. Senate. And the path is an easy one, blocked only by one Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i). See the problem, folks? See how Case has a big “D” after his name, just like Akaka? Welcome to the Hawai’i Democratic Party. See, it’s not enough that Republicans beat the living hell out of Democrats. The Democrats— and this has been true since, oh, the founding of the party—enjoy whipping each other as much as the GOP enjoys whipping them. And right off the bat, Case is tearing into Akaka, telling us all why we need to drive the senator who voted to give ANWR to the oil drillers clean out of power. “Like all of our Hawai’i, I have the deepest aloha for Senator Akaka and truly honor his decades of selfless service,” said Case in his Jan. 19 campaign kick-off announcement. Okay, so there’s not as much stabbing and biting as I expected. But Case did, in carefully guarded terms, outline in that little bit of seemingly shameless praise, lay out his campaign strategy. Catch how he used the word “decades” to describe Akaka’s experience? That’s a little Washington code word for “ancient.” See, Akaka is 81

(so is Senator Daniel Inouye, but he got overwhelmingly reelected in 2004). And this scares Democrats. “The last thing we want is for both our Senators to leave office at the same time, with all of their accumulated seniority disappearing overnight, leaving our Hawai’i vulnerable while we build it anew from scratch,” said Case, who’s an infantile 53. See how he used “accumulated seniority” in a sentence? That’s called getting off to a good start.

SATURDAY, JAN. 21 And now the hand wringing begins. Senator Akaka told the Honolulu Advertiser today that he doesn’t “feel betrayed” by Case announcing that he wants his Senate seat even though they apparently never discussed it before and they’re all supposedly friends in the same political party. “I won’t say that he was disloyal, but he did not discuss it with the delegation,” Akaka told the paper. “And, if he did, I think the delegation would have tried to persuade him not to run.” Well, duh! Hmm, I’m Ed Case, loyal Democrat, and I’m going to run against another loyal Democrat who’s been in politics nearly as long as I’ve been alive. I think I’ll run and tell the rest of the party! I’m sure they’ll have nothing but support for me! Even more shocking is that Governor Linda Lingle thinks Case’s announcement is a good thing. “It will increase awareness of the upcoming election,” she told reporters. “It should boost voter turnout. And I think anything that involves more people in voting is a positive thing for our state and for our country.” Well, double duh! See, Lingle is a Republican. They could potentially win big here if Case’s gambit backfires and he ends up souring the state’s liberal voters when the November elections finally roll around. All the GOP would have to do is put forward a moderate candidate and they could finally, after all these years, win a U.S. Senate seat in the great state of Hawai’i.

SUNDAY, JAN. 22 Maybe.

MONDAY, JAN. 23 So state assistant superintendent Kathy Kawaguchi wants a thorough looking-over given to the DARE program. This nationwide drug prevention deal, used in most of the state’s elementary schools, brings cops into the classroom in an attempt to steer kids away from smoking the reefer and snorting the coke. It’s also been the target of numerous studies and reports saying its standard of telling 10-year-olds to just say no doesn’t really work. “DARE tends not to be as effective for drug prevention,” Kawaguchi told a state Board of Education committee, according to today’s Advertiser. Though she did add that it does succeed in building a “child partnership” with the fuzz. If this sounds familiar, dear readers, it’s because you’re dear readers and have already read about problems and

controversies with the DARE program in the pages of this paper (Barukh Shalev’s “Be Respectful,” Sept. 8, 2005).

TUESDAY, JAN. 24 Looks like we’ve got to put our beloved Hawaiian ahi on that growing list of fish—shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, to name a few—that kids and women who may shortly give birth to kids shouldn’t eat because of high mercury contamination. That’s because new federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) studies show ahi’s mercury content is higher than originally thought. “The federal data are not news to us,” Dr. Linda Rosen, deputy state health director for health resources, is quoted as saying in today’s Advertiser. “[They] are in the range of levels we found in our own survey.” Wait a sec— the state already knew the ahi mercury levels were high, and they’re only mentioning it now? Considering that the Bush Administration wants to let toxic polluters dump more mercury into the environment, shouldn’t they have spoken up sooner? Anthony Pignataro really, Really, REALLY hates moving.

LC Watch Strike Two

Casanova, the popular Italian restaurant and nightclub that gives many people on Maui a reason to head to Makawao on Wednesday nights, just got its second strike from the LC. One more strike—be it serving liquor to a minor, serving someone already intoxicated, etc.—and the Maui County Department of Liquor Control could take away Casanova’s liquor license. The second strike happened at the Jan. 5, 2006 Adjudication Board hearing, right after Casanova got its first strike for serving a minor (see last week’s column, “Wristband Wonder,” for more on that). In a way that was fitting, because the incident that led to Casanova’s second strike—also serving a minor—occurred barely a week after the Strike One event. In this case, an 18-year-old girl used her 24-year-old sister’s ID to get into the club. LC Investigator Pedro Gapero, who happened to be at the bar that particular night doing “routine checks,” noticed the girl and confronted her about her age. When the girl insisted she was 24, Gapero threatened to call her parents. Only then did she admit she was underage, at which point Gapero wrote out another violation for Casanova and then made a “citizen’s arrest” of the girl. As it happened, the board chose only to fine Casanova $2,000, the mandatory minimum punishment for a second strike (they could have suspended the club’s license for 30 days). The comparatively lenient sanction probably had a lot to do with the owners telling the board they had immediately instituted Gapero’s suggestion that in the future bartenders and door personnel hold IDs up to the face of the person trying to get in, rather than constantly looking up and down between the two. “We are thoroughly open to suggestions from inspectors,” Casanova owner Steven Segre told the board. But then he added that Gapero had also suggested that they obtain an infrared light to check to see if IDs are fake, but never followed up later on where to get one. -Anthony Pignataro

WOULD YOU PAY A 281% INTEREST RATE? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED AT THE ANSWER. When you’re promised a tax refund in 48 hours, it’s not a refund, it’s a loan. If you’re expecting $2000, and you pay a $200 fee to have it in 48 hours, you’re paying an effective rate of 281% to receive it 13 days sooner than you otherwise would. You’re going to be inundated the next few months with ads spouting the virtues of these refunds in hours – don’t believe them. These loans are expensive, often costing more than the return preparation itself. For these reasons we chose not to offer them. We do a lot of other cool things for our clients too.

In September, fertility experts interviewed by London’s Daily Telegraph said an alarming number of women were choosing in-vitro fertilization not because of trouble conceiving but merely because “fast track” pregnancies better fit their busy lifestyles. Said one clinician, “Some people are horrified by the idea that they have to have sex two to three times a week.”

VOX POPULI In a race between two AfricanAmericans, Don Samuels was elected again to the Minneapolis City Council in November, despite—or thanks to—his 2004 statements that he can effectively serve the city’s blacks because he descended from “house slaves” in the South rather than “field slaves.” And City Council member Clark Griep failed in his bid for mayor of Broomfield, Colo., despite his revealing that the incumbent mayor, Karen Stuart, had had an extra-marital affair eight years ago with him (which she denied.)

records search, found in January that the city’s Department of Water and Power had spent $1 million in the last two years in a campaign to convince residents that the city does, indeed, have top-quality municipal water, yet its employees spent $88,000 of taxpayer money during the same period on commercial bottled water.

GREAT ART! In November, prominent, occasionally selfmutilating performance artist Marina Abramovic, 59, performed “covers” of other performance artists’ seminal works (with their permission) in her “Seven Easy Pieces” show at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum. In one, according to a New York Times profile, she covered her head in honey and gold leaf, cradled a dead rabbit, and whispered to it about pictures on the wall (original artist: Joseph Beuys). In another, she lay on a bed above lighted candles and made cuts on her fingers while slides of women painting their nails flashed on a screen (original artist: Gina Pane). However, she was stymied by the denial of permission for her fondest proposed “cover”: Chris Burden’s 1973 piece in which his hands were nailed to the roof of a Volkswagen as it was rolled out of a garage.

READERS’ CHOICE A judge in Montgomery County, Md., ruled in January that angrily pulling down one’s pants and “mooning” a neighbor (even in front of the neighbor’s 8-year-old daughter) is not illegal in the state (though the judge did call it “disgusting”). And widespread news reports in December at first said a Blue Springs, Mo., woman had “swallowed” her cell phone after an argument with her boyfriend, but of course, miniaturization technology is not quite that advanced, and, several days later, Blue Springs police said it was not a swallowing but an attempted cramming and arrested the boyfriend. of Maui County Department of Water Supply stationery are the words “By Water All Things Find Life.” It’s a fitting, if somewhat awkwardly worded, motto for the county agency tasked with making sure all residents have ready access to potable water. Doing so requires a complex network of pipes, pumps, trucks and wells connecting aquifers, streams and storage tanks throughout the island. Of course, not all of it is functioning at any given moment—some wells, for instance, have rarely been tapped because of subsurface contamination. These wells do not bring life to anything. Two of these wells are on the Westside, and they concern us today. They lie at the heart of a problem facing some of the island’s biggest proposed land developments. On Jan. 19, Maui Land & Pineapple Co. people interested in buying a home on the Westside gathered at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua for a briefing on the company’s proposed 300-acre Pulelehua development. The project has the potential to be another West Maui town on the order of Honokowai or Kahana. Most of the people attending the Ritz Carlton meeting wanted to hear more about the company’s plans, according to repeated statements from Maui Land Executive Vice President Bob McNatt, to put 125 “permanently affordable” rentals and 325 affordable homes “priced from approximately $190,000 to $360,000 in today’s dollars.” As company employees, they get first crack at the homes, when they come on line sometime in 2008. At some point in the near future, both the homebuilders and buyers will have to contend with a chemical called DBCP. Known as 1,2 Dibromo-3-Chloropropane to its closest friends,

DBCP is nasty stuff, especially for males. The EPA considers it a “probable human carcinogen.” “Acute (short-term) exposure to DBCP in humans results in moderate depression of the central nervous system (CNS) and pulmonary congestion from inhalation, and gastrointestinal distress and pulmonary edema from oral exposure,” states an EPA fact sheet on DBCP. “Chronic (long-term) exposure to DBCP in humans causes male reproductive effects, such as decreased sperm counts. Testicular effects and decreased sperm counts were observed in animals chronically exposed to DBCP by inhalation.” At least two West Maui wells are contaminated with so much DBCP that they’re no longer in use. Growers like the Maui Land & Pineapple Co. apparently used the stuff with abandon in Hawai’i during the later half of the 20th century. “Until 1977, DBCP was used as a soil fumigant and nematocide [worm killer] on over 40 different crops in the United States,” states the EPA fact sheet. “From 1977 to 1979, EPA suspended registration for all DBCP-containing products except for use on pineapples in Hawaii. In 1985, EPA issued an intent to cancel all registrations for DBCP, including use on pineapples.” That’s right: pineapple growers in Hawai’i sprayed DBCP for eight full years after it was banned for use on the mainland. It made sense, since chemists developed DBCP in the 1950s for Hawaiian pineapple crops. It took a couple decades, but contamination finally appeared in California wells. By 1979, Maui Land & Pineapple— one of the state’s biggest DBCP fans—began its own tests. In June of that year, they hired the late hydrologist John Mink— husband of former Congresswoman Patsy Mink. His tests showed

the dreaded poison in five of 10 test sites. In Hawai’i today, the maximum allowed contaminant level is 0.04 parts per billion. According to a June, 1996 Environment Hawai’i report, Mink found significantly more than that. In fact, the lowest contaminant level he found was 0.26 parts per billion, which occurred at a test site in Honolua. On the other side of the island at Pauwela, Mink found 2.23 parts per billion. Significant levels, certainly, but remember that Mink ran his tests back in 1979. DCBP was still perfectly legal for Maui Land to spray, and spray they did, making sure not to advertise Mink’s data. Indeed, a June 21, 1979 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story—quoted in the Environment Hawai’i insisted that “Federal inspectors have found no traces” of DBCP in their tests. It was only in 1985 when the EPA finally ordered Maui Land to end DBCP use, even though the company was requesting permission to use up not only the rest of its pesticide stocks, but also any remaining on the mainland. Until February 1992, DBCP on Maui only appeared in test sites. That changed when it started showing up—at nearly 10 times the state limit—in a Napili well. Then it appeared in a nearby well used by Amfac for Ka’anapali. For two years, county health officials tried treating the water. Then in 1994 the state ordered that the county stop using the Napili well (Ka’anapali continues to aerate its well to this day). On May 3, 1996, the County of Maui sued a host of chemical companies—Dow, Shell Oil, Brewer Environmental Industries, Occidental and Amvac—as well as Maui Land & Pineapple, asking that they pay to clean up the DBCP mess. Municipal litigation on DBCP began in the 1980s, with all sorts of cities and counties suing the same list of chemical companies. Like most such lawsuits, the matter settled out of court. On the last day of August, 1999, the companies agreed to pay Maui County $3 million in “tort damages” as well as “certain sums” to install carbon filtration systems on future wells until Sept. 1, 2039. The settlement sounds like a good deal, except that in the 1990s other cities got lots more money from their litigation: $25 million here, $16.25 million plus another $6 million to $10 million in treatment costs there. The city of Fresno, California scored $70 million in damages and treatment contracts. That was then. What about now? Homes for Pulelehua will start going up in a couple years. Maui Land & Pineapple’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project includes vague promises that potable water supplies exist for the development. Others aren’t so sure. “The EIS does not include analysis of water for DBCP and other nematode pesticides,” insists the slow-growth citizens’ group Maui Tomorrow in its written comments on Pulelehua. “DBCP has reportedly been found in other area wells. If such pollution is found, how will Pulelehua provide a safe water supply?” The Sierra Club’s Pulelehua comments, submitted by Maui Chapter President Lance Holter, are just as succinct. “Two of the 5 county wells in the Honolua aquifer (Napili A and Honokua A) are contaminated with DCBP and have rarely been used over the past decade,” Holter wrote. “The other 3 county wells have been pumped at an average rate about 1.5 MGD [million gallons per day], but as pumping has increased, chloride levels have risen as high as 200 ppm [parts per million].” Holter also dryly noted that the contaminated Napili A well is the closest potential water source to Pulelehua. We’ve always been Maui’s one stop for great coffee but did you know we have

David Paul’s doesn’t let the gourmet intimidate you They’re everywhere. Maui is absolutely inundated with them. I’m talking about fine dining restaurants that serve Pacific Rim-esque cuisine with a sophisticated, tropical ambience and a high-dollar menu. You know the kind. They’re award winning. They feature celebrity chefs. They’re written about in all the gourmet magazines. And they come highly recommended by concierges and travel agents worldwide. But unless it’s your birthday or the family’s visiting—in other words, when you’re not paying—chances are you haven’t been to one in a while.

David Paul’s 127 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 667-5117. $$$ David Paul’s Lahaina Grill is one of those establishments. Although they label their cuisine “New American,” Chef Arnulfo Gonzalez favors local fish and a noticeable Asian flair in dishes like the sautéed Opakapaka with caramelized shiitake mushrooms, the Maui onion and sesame seed crusted seared ahi, or the crispy Shanghai spring rolls. They’ve won numerous awards, including Best Maui Restaurant in the Honolulu Magazine readers’ poll for the past 13 years. Entrees range from $26 to $43. And reservations are damn near required. But one thing you may not know, David Paul’s has seasonal discounts. Yay! Starting in April and continuing through mid-December, from Sunday through Thursday nights David Paul’s features a “Demi Menu” for people—like myself— who dine at the bar. It’s sort of like a sample menu of their signature goods, at half the price, which is great because you can

try a lot of different things, and more casually. Kona coffee roasted rack of lamb, four-cheese manicotti, grilled salmon fillet with sautéed spinach, Kula asparagus, broiled Hau’ula tomatoes and vanilla bean jasmine rice—you can have it all, at demi-portion and price. Personally, I enjoy eating at the bar because you don’t need a reservation, you don’t have to stare at your date across the table and try to make awkward conversation (thankfully, that’s what the bartender’s for) and, well, the drinks are right there. Yay again! Speaking of drinks—and you know I have to—the wine list is extraordinary (over 350 selections!). The cocktails, while tropically inclined, are like none other you’d find on Maui. Blame it on their new sommelier, Richard Olson III, and bartendresses supreme, Mary Swiger, Annabehl Sinclair and Tara Thomas. While Olson deftly points out what glass goes well with Chef Arnie’s meatballs, the bar crew will dazzle you with their Colada Martini rimmed in toasted coconut. Every so often, David Paul’s will also have a month of “Kama’aina Tuesdays,” where locals—gotta show Hawai’i I.D.—get 50 percent off any entrée. Translated, that means the macadamia nut smoked Kurobuta pork chop with Poblano chili and Dungeness crab golden potato hash, picked red cabbage and apples with a pomegranate demi-glace would be a mere $18. The oven roasted chicken breast filled with upcountry mushrooms, braised apples, Kula spinach, smoked Mozzarella, wrapped in pancetta and served on tomato risotto with Madeira wine jus? A fabulously un-intimidating $14.50. Anyway, their next slated “Kama’aina Tuesdays” month is in May. Hopefully, this also means my dinner dates will be decidedly more—shall we say—genteel? Ahem. Another great thing about the bar is that you can also dine alone. MTW

Afrika Bambaataa Thursday, 10 p.m. at Casanova; Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s [HIP-HOP] This is big. Honey, this is HUGE. Afrika Bambaataa. THE Afrika Bambaataa. The Godfather of Hip-Hop? The guy who, in the early 1970’s, formed the idealistic Zulu Nation in the Bronx, headed DJ battles and b-boy/girl competitions, organized the collective that included graffiti artists and birthed the powerful ideology that hip-hop was a pro-active, creative and peaceful force of the people? The dude who produced the seminal electrofunk hit, ”Planet Rock,” made popular the use of mixedgenre sampling that would smoothly incorporate dance music with a Martin Luther King, Jr. speech or AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long,” and collaborated with James Brown, Boy George and the Sex Pistols’ John Lydon, further establishing the unifying force that music truly, beautifully is? The man practically invented hip-hop. He’s coming here? No shit. Tickets: $20 in advance. Tickets can be purchased at Casanova and Hapa’s, or in Paia at the Wine Corner, Groove 2 Music and Livewire Cafe (in Lahaina, too); also, Bounty Music (Kahului), Requests Records (Wailuku), Beach Road Records (Kihei) or online at www.hulatickets.com. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Lightning Fingers Thursday-Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater, MACC [HAWAIIAN MUSIC] Jake Shimabukuro—it’s funny that he’s known for his fast fingers when his name is such a mouthful. That’s right, I went there. This dude is so crafty with the ‘ukulele that it’s getting him world recognition. The kid’s famous! Along with his available CD’s and DVD’s, Jake has New York and Japan booking him, not to mention his appearance in November on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Now, we all love the ‘ukulele—if you live here you have to—but to capture outsider attention is impressive. It must be the way he breaks the barriers of the traditional type of ‘ukulele play, which is his foundation, but takes it to another place where no genre is safe. Tickets: $30 or half-price for keiki. Call 242-7469. [HEIDI KING]

Kick Off Your Sunday Shoes Friday-Sunday, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [STAGE/MUSICAL] Baldwin High School students present the energetic musical “Footloose”, a story about a city boy who moves to a small rural town during his high school senior year, only to discover that the town has sticks up their butts and a strict ban on dancing. Oh, you know he’s gonna get them to let loose. Let’s hear it for the boy! Tickets: $14 adults, $10 seniors, $7 students. Call 242-7469.

Pandora’s Seed Saturday, 5:30 p.m. at the Iao Theater in Wailuku [GMO FILM] Pandora’s Seed, the story of “GMOs in Hawai’i Nei,” is likely an informative but depressing look at the extent to which companies like Monsanto are growing genetically modified seeds throughout the state. But that doesn’t mean a screening of this important new film needs to be a downer. Thanks to GMO-Free Maui, which is sponsoring this Saturday’s showing, you can see the new documentary for free. Free! Plus you get to enjoy live music from O Kula Noe, pupus and raffle prices. Raffle prizes! And like I said, admission is free. For more information like where to pick up raffle tickets, visit www.gmofreemaui.com or call 572-5831. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

What’s dysfunctional about this?

Correcting Dysfunctional Children Nanny McPhee comes up a lesson short Emma Thompson (Sense And Sensibility) plays a magic-working nanny in a script she wrote based loosely on Christianna Brand’s 1960’s era Nurse Matilda books. Under the clumsy direction of Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine) Thompson’s witch of a nanny—she sports a single eyebrow, two hairy warts and one overly long front tooth—mysteriously arrives at the unkempt household of widowed funeral director Mr. Brown (Colin Firth). Mr. Brown’s seven devilish children take pride in the speed with which they have scared off 17 prospective nannies with diabolical antics such as pretending to eat their infant sibling.

Nanny McPhee

★★★★★ Rated PG/88 mins.

With calm aplomb Nanny McPhee instills in the disobedient children her five lessons for well mannered behavior while Mr. Brown searches for a wife within the one month timeframe that his late wife’s Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) has allowed him if she is to continue financing the oversized family. The movie is hampered by production designer Michael Howell’s garish neon color palate contrasted against clownish costumes by Nic Ede that drag the movie through a romper room of spilled nursery school paint. Even though the good-natured Mr. Brown’s house is attended by a militarytrained cook (Imelda Staunton) and an attractive scullery maid named Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald), none of the home’s adults seem capable of exerting any discipline over the anarchist children who turn rooms into war zones. For his part, Mr. Brown is concerned primarily with perpe-

trating the dubious child-rearing customs of his deceased wife who was loved by her kids for things like giving them sweets and ice cream whenever they were bedridden with sickness. Upon meeting the children, Nanny McPhee informs the kids that so long as they need her but do not want her she must remain, and when they want her but no longer need her then she must go. With the aid of her magic cane McPhee breaks the spell of chaos with her first command that the children go to bed when they’re told. As the tikes gradually begin to comply with her five lessons, McPhee’s ugly physical features begin to vanish one by one and she transitions into an almost attractive lady. This promising subplot asserts itself with the notion that McPhee is, at heart, the ideal marital partner for Mr. Brown even if she vociferously denies engaging in affairs of the heart. Nanny McPhee’s ever-improving appearance becomes the story’s most enticing yet abandoned narrative thread. The nanny’s exceptionally long tooth never shortens even after success with her five lessons has reversed her obesity, warts and eyebrow issues. A messy food fight climax precipitates a surprise resolution for Mr. Brown whose marital and financial problems are solved in a way that solicits some expository explanation to defend against the age difference between himself and his new bride. Here Emma Thompson the screenwriter robs the story of its thunder by substituting what should have been Nanny McPhee’s reward for her parenting prowess. Instead the children are abandoned to regress into the same horrid conditions that the story began. Thompson’s impaired narrative instincts seem to have been instructed by her own sense of humility for her character or by some possible allegiance to Christianna Brand’s source material. Either way, the anti-climatic ending comes as a forced and rushed affair that leaves the story with no guiding protagonist. Nanny McPhee needed one more lesson. MTW

SHOWTIMES

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday, February 1

5 & 7:30 P.M., CASTLE THEATER TOUCH THE SOUND - (Unrated) - A documentary which explores the connections among sound, rhythm, time and the body by following percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who is nearly deaf. 99 min.

New This Week

ANNAPOLIS - (PG-13) - Drama - Ever see Richard Gere and Lou Gossett, Jr. in An Officer and a Gentleman? Cool, then you don’t have to see this rip-off, about a young bad boy (James Franco) who tries to find out if he measures up at the U.S. Naval Academy. 108 min. (Anthony Pignataro) BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE 2 - (PG13) - Comedy Martin Lawrence is back wearing the fat suit, once again needing to go deep undercover for the F.B.I. Isn’t it amazing how all a man needs to do is dress up like a woman in the movies, and all of a sudden he can run faster than a speeding bullet, leap over buildings in a single bound and kick just about anyone’s ass? Incredible. 99 min. (Heidi King) THE MATADOR - (R) - Drama, Thriller - Okay, it’s supposed to be a drama thriller, but it looks like they want to be a comedy. I don’t know. It’s Pierce Brosnan as a hitman who’s kind of over his job. He, by chance, makes friends with a regular Joe played by Greg Kinnear. When the hitman finds himself in a sticky situation, he goes to his new friend for help. 96 min. (HK) MATCH POINT - (R) - Drama, Thriller - A guy (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) marries a lovely young lady (Emily Mortimer) who happens to come from a filthy rich family. Everything is picturesque...until he meets and becomes enchanted by another woman (Scarlett Johansson). Then the scandolous activity begins. I can’t tell if this one is going to be like Fatal Attraction or something more original. Written and directed by Woody Allen. 124 min. (HK) NANNY MCPHEE - (PG) - Family, Comedy Think ugly Mary Poppins, except with Emma Thompson in the lead role. Pretty routine stuff, really—nanny checks in, uses magic to tame naughty brats—but Thompson is also one of the screenwriters, so there might be something to it. Also stars Colin Firth. 88 min. (AP)

Now Showing

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama,

Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? It’s a tale of the issues people face due to the blind hatred of society. Society is such a dumbass. Anyway, I’m thinking this one’s going to be a romantic and touching tearjerker. 134 min. (HK) CAPOTE - (R) - Drama - The Hollywood version of the true story of writer Truman Capote. In 1959, a family was murdered in a small Kansas town. Capote was sent to write a piece for The New Yorker magazine and ended up getting more involved than he expected by be-friending the murderer. Moral dilemmas galore! 110 min. (HK) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) - ActionAdventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe and discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) END OF THE SPEAR - (PG13) - Drama - Some missionaries go to help an Amazon tribe, the tribesmen kill them and later one finds himself involved with the family of one of the missionaries. Twisted. 112 min. (HK) GLORY ROAD - (PG) - Sports, Drama - Just in time for March Madness, this is the story of Texas Western College, the first school in college basketball history to field five African-American starters, and the troubles they encountered on their way to the NCAA finals. Stars Josh Lucas and Derek Luke. 106 min. (AP) HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family - Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. It looks cute. 81 min. (HK) HOSTEL - (R) - Thriller, Horror - Paxton and Josh backpack through Europe eager to make quintessentially hazy travel memories with new friend Oli, an Icelander they've met along the way. They’re eventually lured by a fellow traveler to what's described as a nirvana for American backpackers. which happens to be a particular hostel in an out-of-the-way Slovakian town stocked with Eastern European women as desperate as they are gorgeous. But is it really too good to be true? 95 min. (KLW) KING KONG - (PG13) - Action-Adventure - In a massive jungle on Skull Island, prehistoric creatures have been protected and hidden for millions of years. But a group of nosy filmmakers discover a giant gorilla so, of course, they have to go on a great-ape search. Their greedy quest puts them up against not only Kong but his dinosaur enemies, too. Starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody. 187 min. (KLW) THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama Queen Latifah plays a quiet and reserved woman who, upon a visit to the doctor, thinks she only has three

weeks to live. This news pushes her to take risks she normally wouldn’t. Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - (PG13) - Drama - Based on the bestselling book by Arthur Golden about the journey of a peasant girl into one of Japan’s most notorious geishas. 145 min. (Samantha Campos) MUNICH - (R) - Set in the aftermath of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, story follows a secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and kill the 11 Palestinians suspected to have planned the Munich attack--and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. 164 min. (KLW) THE PRODUCERS - (PG13) - Comedy - The huge stars (Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane) who brought this classic back on Broadway are now gettin’ it to the silver screen. Basically, two dudes try to make money off the inverstors of their play by creating a flop. I was sold as soon as I found out Will Ferrell has a part. I love that man. Also stars Uma Thurman. 134 min. (HK) THE RINGER - (PG-13) - Comedy - This has all the makings of the greatest film of the year—maybe even the decade. Johnny Knoxville plays some guy who decides to enter the Special Olympics by pretending to be stupider than he actually is. Gold! 100 min. (AP) RUMOR HAS IT - (PG13) - Comedy - Kevin Costner plays a guy suave enough to seduce a beautiful woman (Jennifer Aniston) as well as her mother...and grandma?!? Ew. Emotional distress ensues. 97 min. (HK) SYRIANA - (R) - Thriller - George Clooney and Matt Damon star in this tense political thriller which unfolds against the backdrop of the global oil industry. From the filmmakers that brought us Traffic. 123 min. (HK) TRISTAN & ISOLDE - (PG-13) - Drama, Romance - So when I looked up this flick on Yahoo! Movies, I read the following sentence, written presumably to explain what the movie is about: “In the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde, young lovers become doomed against the forces of royal politics.” Okay, that makes no sense— grammatically or otherwise. From what I can tell, this is a love story about two kids who like each other, set in the time when they had knights and stuff. It “stars” James Franco and Sophia Myles. 125 min. (AP) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - Action-Horror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampy-vixen Selene, the vampire heroine who joins with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) as they battle against an ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Learning… to a Point The art of church decorating with piercer/tattooist Brad of Island Ink He’s only been doing it for three years. But Brad already knows this is what he wants to do forever. “You’re helping someone decorate their church,” he says. “Their body’s their temple, right?” Though he grew up in Idaho, Brad started his bodily “church decorating” 15 years ago in Eugene, Oregon, in a back-of-the-house shop he and his friend constructed. While his friend handled the ink, Brad took care of the piercing, an art form he says he’d been fascinated with since he was eight years old and watching National Geographic programs on TV. “It just goes to show you your parents should really pay attention to what you’re watching,” says Brad. Still piercing, he moved to Maui nearly eight years ago to fill a guest spot for another piercer at Island Ink Tattoo Co. in Paia. When that piercer left two days later, Brad decided to stay, with the stipulation that he would eventually pursue a tattoo apprenticeship at the shop. Then-owner Tom, now at Lahaina Tattoo, took Brad under his wing, teaching him the “technical shit” of ink slinging, needle-making, cleanliness and other glamorous tricks of the trade. Brad took it all in, also gaining insight from the other people in the shop, as well as his years of poking people with his piercing gun. “Yeah, I’ve already dealt with people’s trips,” he says.

“Piercing is faster but way more intimate. The energy is different. But I don’t ever want to stop doing either.” He says his first professional tattoo was done on a friend’s mom who had never been inked before. She wanted a heart in remembrance of her husband who had just died. Brad says he was nervous and it seemed to take forever. But on her next trip, she had him add flowers to the design. When asked if there’s something he wants to be known for as an artist, Brad says simply, “doing good work. “Is there really anything else?” he says. “I’ve known complete assholes, total pricks but hey, they do really good work and that’s all that matters.” Brad says he’s inspired by “the amount of exceptional artists here,” as well as visiting artists, preferring that they come here to guest spot so he doesn’t ever have to leave the island in order to continue his education. He also studies art online and is touched by people’s imaginations. “I love how they take a normal picture, turn it abnormal, then make it a tattoo,” he says. He’s also impressed by artists who do big freehand pieces— tattoos drawn directly on the body without the use of a stencil— like Samson, a local artist who’s known for his amazing freehand Polynesian tattoos. But Brad also says the hardest thing he’s had to learn is patience.

Brad doing a little decorating “In a busy shop, everyone’s pushing you to go faster,” he says. “It’s a challenge to try slowing down, and at the same time you want to gain speed.” “One thing Brad understands is tribal and the whole Polynesian angle,” says Caz, another tattoo artist at Island Ink. “He knows what things mean, or at least where to look, so he can give people what they want.” But ask Brad what he specializes in and he bristles. “I refuse to limit myself,” he says. “People get stereotyped into a genre or image and I don’t want that.” In his spare time, Brad hangs out with his dogs, paints, dives, surfs, fishes and drinks coffee. But like most tattoo artists, he hopes to own his own shop one day. In the meantime, he’s content to stay on Maui, developing the skill and knowledge of his body craft. “I’ve got the hang of it,” he says. “But with the growth of the industry, new stuff’s popping up. The bottom line is I don’t ever want to stop learning. Anyway, it’s the know-it-all I want to avoid.” MTW

In theory, I’m trilingual. But since I spend most of my time speaking only two of my languages, the third’s nearly inaccessible. On those rare occasions when I’m called upon to use it, I make embarrassing gaffes and speak like a child. It’s not that I’ve completely lost that knowledge—I’ve forgotten how to quickly access it. You, too, are struggling to remember something you once knew intimately. It’s frustrating, I know, but stick with it. For me it takes a week or three before I’ve rebuilt the synaptic connections to my rusty tongue. It might take longer (or shorter) for you, but there’s no question in my mind that—if you persist—you’ll get there.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) How many times do I—and all your friends—have to tell you how amazing you are before you’ll stop being so insecure? You’re incredible—except when you’re not. When’s that? Whenever you hold yourself back because you can’t quite believe how much you’re capable of. That’s just self-defeatist bullshit, and I’m as bored of it as you are. You’ve had countless moments of validation: basically whenever you’ve tried something (with a very few exceptions), you’ve succeeded. Yet somehow you doubt that you can repeat your accomplishments. Well, get the hell over it, please. When you do—and not before—you’ll quite likely be, well, rich and successful.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Maui Time Weekly accepts credit cards for classified and display ads

Your sign is the province of little children and the ancient. The essence of Aries is playful, innocent, slightly selfish, enthusiasm. Little kids are like that. So are some old people—the ones who are so over it they’re into it again. They’ve released the responsibility and heaviness they’ve shouldered their whole lives, to just play. Everything’s funny to toddlers of all ages. What a cool way of being! And you’re lucky enough to have it come naturally. Why would you bother straying far from it? You may not quite have the freedom (enjoyed by the very old and young) to just play all the time—but surely you can justify doing so on most nights and weekends.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) When I moved in, the walls of my apartment wore seven layers of wallpaper and paint. It was difficult to describe the place without using the words “dingy” and “run-down.” Stripping the walls and soaking them with a fresh coat, however, made it something entirely different. You, too, have recently (or perhaps not so recently) moved in somewhere that’s not exactly the homey haven you imagined and hoped for. It could be, though. Your job, this week, is to determine exactly how much energy and time you’d need to transform it. Then you can decide, finally, whether it’s worth it to stick around, or simply easier to find someplace new.

Maui Recycling Service

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

If not now, when?

I have this utter compulsion to share everything (and everyone) I enjoy. Subconsciously I believe that they’ll love what and who I do. Rationally, I know that’s ridiculous, especially given my taste in highly original friends. Nevertheless, I’ve optimistically organized countless parties populated by people who mixed as well as oil and water, or forced my buddies to endure experiences I should’ve known they’d despise, just because I couldn’t wrap my head around our essential differences. Don’t make the same mistake. Your intentions are good, but not appreciated—at least not by these guys. If you want them to stick around, chill out. You can still enjoy the thing(s) you were so eager to share—by yourself.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING! FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee! When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 1/31/06

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) New Moons don’t get more chill than this week’s dark night in Aquarius. Talk about mellow. Don’t bother having ambitions this week; you’ll be lucky if you can manage to cook a proper dinner more than twice. Not that you should forget about long-term dreams; just don’t expect short-term results. If you’re going to aspire to anything right at the moment, keep it simple and social: hanging with friends is bound to be sweet, casual and utterly drama-free. Don’t push any of that stuff that’s been nagging at you. All that shit can—and will have to—wait.

244-0443 • www.mauirecycles.com

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) There’s very little you can’t do. But let’s face it: just because you’re capable of something doesn’t mean you enjoy it. This week it’s important to make the distinction: are you doing something because it pleases others, or because it pleases yourself? A lot of Leos get into this trap of doing shit because it earns them praise and admiration. That’s not entirely a bad thing, and certainly not a reason to stop, necessarily. But I think it’s important to find something you’d do whether anyone else praised you (or even noticed) or not—and this week is the right time to start doing, at least part-time, exactly that.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I spent about an hour singing your praises tonight. Once I got started, I just couldn’t stop. I love you people. But I found myself, at the end, feeling stung with compassion when I was compelled to add: “But I wouldn’t want to be one.” You sure don’t have it easy. The problem is, you often make things look so easy—accomplishing more with one hand than any two of us could do with our whole bodies. Many people don’t appreciate how much effort it actually takes. This week is a good time to gently clue them in. If you do it sweetly and without a built-in guilt trip, my solo song of praise will almost instantly blossom into a full-on choir. Now, doesn’t that sound fantastic?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Some Libras have a problem: they’re nice. Fine. Nice is nice. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of it. They’re stuck with this idea that the only alternative to nice is not nice. Nasty. Mean-spirited. Ugly. Sure, that’s one option. But for the majority of you (who are, I believe, slightly more worldly and/or evolved than that) you know there are other options. Recognize that nice is a fine starting point, but to finish there is about as dull as dishwater. You’ve got to push the boundaries of who you are until it goes beyond the tedious mundanity of nice, sweet and pretty. Stretch beyond nice until you’re simply amazing. Anything less—quite frankly—will just bore us to tears.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I’ve never known you to be so romantic. I don’t mean red roses and seduction—that’s well-trod ground. I just have never known you to wear such a Vaseline-smeared lens when reviewing your memories, distorting them into appealing confections that they simply are not. Why are you subjecting yourself to such powerful self-delusion? Is it because your present isn’t what you wish it were? Trying to relive or recreate half-forgotten chapters isn’t the right way to improve it. Even if you “succeeded,” the new version would never be what it was—and you might even destroy anything good about the old version while you’re at it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’ve been looking backwards a lot lately—not because you’re longing for the past, but only to attempt to cover your tracks. Why don’t you want people knowing how you got here? Or is it that you’re embarrassed about (or ashamed of) the detours you took along the way? Ironically, all your efforts to hide or obscure where you’ve been only point them out, because they stand in stark contrast to your usual forthrightness. If you don’t want us to notice, pay attention to, or care about what you’ve been up to before, you’ve got to stop focusing so intently on it yourself. Keep your eyes on where you’re headed and who you are now, and so will we.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) A ladybug has taken shelter in my apartment. I wonder if it’s escaped the frozen death it faced outside just so it can wait longer to die, or if it has some reason to continue. How about you? I don’t mean to be too dramatic, but you’re reminding me of that insect. Does your current inaction stem from helplessness or apathy? Is there really nothing you can do, or simply nothing you can motivate yourself to do? I suspect the latter. Waiting for something to happen won’t work for the ladybug, or for you. Get your butt in gear, darling. It’s a long time ‘til spring.
