LAHAINA, Hawai’i, Feb. 2—With Hollywood, Malibu and Newport Beach saturated with healthy, bubbly, beautiful people, one new Maui-based talent agency is offering a totally new and fresh perspective. “Oooh, everyone’s saying, ‘Look, a Maui chick is the new GUESS? Jeans girl,’” said Patti Punani, who heads the agency Mac Nut Talent. “Well, guess how hard that was to set up? Look, any idiot who spends about five minutes in this industry can find work for a 5’11” blonde surfer chick with green eyes and a 34-inch chest like Tori Praver. What we do at Mac Nut is a little different: we take your bloated, somewhat disgusting fat ass and get him into the Big Show. Now that’s real talent.” According to Punani, Mac Nut’s latest find is 32-year-old Eric “Tiny” Bolton, who recently moved to Maui from West Texas. She calls him “the biggest of the next big things to come along” yet. “Mac Nut has a certain look—a little bit obnoxious, a little bit lazy,” said Punani. “Think Chris Farley, if Chris Farley was a whiny right-winger who spent his mornings getting a dose of Angry White Man crap from talk radio.” Punani’s keen eye and strong stomach have already served Mac Nut well, finding talent for billboard companies as diverse as NASCAR, Chevron Texaco, Shell Lubricants and Redman Chewing Tobacco. “Mac Nut is always looking for big, ugly jerk-offs to turn into America’s newest, hottest model,” said Punani. “I encourage any young fool out there—or old fool, we don’t discriminate—who wants to switch things up and start modeling to go ahead and give me a call. Who knows, maybe he can be the next Mac Nut superstar.”

I’m a star Punani added that Mac Nut is starting a theatrical division and is already signing deals for more than one of its models to appear in the new, sure-to-be-a-hit TV series remake of Battlefield Earth, coming this fall. MTW

In case you don’t remember me, I was the one who stopped you and asked you to help me with my gas tank cap. It was stripped and I had no strength to get it to open, I was COMPLETELY out of gas. That left me stranded there. You were nice enough to tell me, “Oh yeah, my car has the same problem. You gotta take it to the mechanic and have him fix it.” Brah, it was 8 o’clock at night and I was with my 11-year-old daughter. That was all you—a police officer—could do for me? You drove off saying you were sorry, but you never offered to help get us home safely. You didn’t even offer a good effort to get my damn gas cap off. Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in her Jan. 23, 2006 State of the State Address: “It is also the right time to address many unmet needs… from dilapidated school buildings… to a lack of access to healthcare… to deteriorating public housing and a growing homeless problem… to overburdened transportation systems.”

What she didn’t say: It’s also the perfect time to fix what ails the state’s welfare system. According to state Auditor Marian Higa’s recent report, the whole program is so disorganized that it’s hard to tell how well money is being spent. “Perhaps those who got services will feel the money was well spent,” she wrote. “But what about people who didn’t get money but may have been more deserving of those services?” For her part, state Department of Human Services Director Lillian Koller—a Lingle crony from way back—told the Associated Press on Jan. 25, 2006 that the state is doing fine and even lowered caseloads by 7.4 percent from 2003 to 2005. What she didn’t say was whether that decrease was due to people transitioning from welfare to work or simply dropping out of the system entirely. - Anthony Pignataro

A Republican group’s offer of a hundred bucks for information leading to the identification and conviction of the University of California at Los Angeles’ “most radical professors” has all the hallmarks of a cheap publicity stunt: an abrasive young quotemonger, the Nixon-style “Dirty Thirty” enemies list of alleged liberal instructors, and its attempt to compromise students willing to furtively tape their teachers’ lectures. The media, for which “at first glance” could equally serve as a motto and epitaph, has treated it as unworthy of serious coverage. Scratch the surface, however, and it becomes clear that the UCLA story is a chilling new front in the right’s offensive against the last liberal redoubt in America: academia. The “Bruin Alumni Association”—not the actual UCLA alumni association, but a one-man shell operation run by one Andrew Jones, Class of 2003, age 24— says it/he merely wants to “restore an atmosphere of respectful political discourse on campus.” Linda Chavez, a former official in the Reagan White House, assures: “No one is suggesting that anyone be fired for his or her views.” Maybe not yet. But why make a hit list and pay for evidence of ideological incorrectness— unless you plan to use them? Jones is a former researcher for David Horowitz, a bizarre fringe neoconservative with his own taste for enemies lists. Last year he launched a website smearing Bush Administration critics like Phil Donahue and yours truly by lumping them with Al Qaeda leaders wanted for Islamist terrorism. Horowitz, now operating under the banner “Students for Academic Freedom,” has spun himself as a self-appointed campus watchdog arguing that professors with left-wing views

doubt. The small-l liberal tradition in academia, on the other hand, relies on the willingness to set aside preconceived notions and beliefs in the pursuit of truth, regardless of where it may lead them. It places progress for the many over the good of a few elites. The longer they study society’s complex problems, academics tend to find that the simplistic prescriptions advocated by conservatives don’t work. There is no such thing as a conservative intellectual. If people like Andrew Jones get their way, there won’t be any liberal ones either. MTW

should help themselves to a nice big cup of shut-the-hell-up or, better yet, face dismissal. And big-time media outlets that ought to know better, like The New York Times, are taking him seriously. Last week Horowitz spooked the Pennsylvania Legislature into holding HUACesque hearings on the pernicious presence of liberal professors in state colleges and universities. Read into the record was witless testimony by disgruntled conservative students. “This professor always had something negative to say not only about the Bush Administration,” wrote a snitch about an English class at Temple University, “but about conservatives in general. She stated on one occasion that it is impossible to be a moral capitalist. She stated that the U.S. does not have the right to say anything about the Taliban’s record of oppressing women because the U.S. oppresses women too.” Rings true to me. But Horowitz’s message was as clear as when it appeared in the original German: Unless you’re waving the flag and cheering the president, stay away from politics. Stick to the textbook. Though twice as many journalists vote Democratic as Republican, that’s the lowest number since 1971. America’s media, passing off discussions between right-wing extremists and squishy New Republic centrists as genuine debate, has silenced the liberals in its ranks. Leaders of major religious groups, including the traditionally activist Roman Catholic Church, have cozied up to the right. Corporate power, historically controlled by Republicans, has consolidated its hold on all three branches of government, which are dominated by the GOP on the federal level as well as most states. Institutions of higher education, where the hearts and minds of America’s next generation of leaders are formed, has become the equivalent of the medieval city-state: tiny refuges where intellectuals and their students can question such conservative articles of faith as free markets, free trade and American military and corporate hegemony. The nail that sticks out, says the Japanese proverb, must be pounded down. American conservatives, having pounded their liberal foes into nearly total submission, see the campus culture wars as their chance to finish the job. “By their own description,” The Washington Post reported in March 2005, “72 percent of those teaching at American universities and colleges are liberal and 15 percent are conservative.” At the most elite institutions including the Ivy League, the ideological differential was even wider—87 percent were self-identified liberals, 13 percent conservatives. There’s a simple reason for that gap: conservatives, by definition, are closed-minded. When in doubt, they favor the status quo. Republicans give government officials, the wealthy and others in power the benefit of the

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25 We’ve got less than eight months to go before the State of Hawai’i Primary Election, and the fight over which Democrat gets to run for the U.S. Senate is really heating up. On one hand we have the incumbent, Daniel Akaka, the 81year-old fan of both Native Hawaiian Recognition and drilling oil in Alaska’s frozen Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). It’s often hard to tell which position gives him more grief. And on the other hand—the one that always gets us into trouble, according to that well-known voice of wisdom and rationality called Gilligan—we have Congressman Ed Case. Case is, well, what political science types call a “backbencher.” He’s running against Akaka because he says Akaka is old and ossified (my words, to be fair, but you get the point). Well, now Akaka is striking back, telling the Honolulu Advertiser that if he doesn’t get reelected, Native Hawaiians can kiss his recognition bill goodbye. “It has been my bill,” he told the paper in a story running today. “I’ve been the one that has been pushing it. Also, all the commitments, well, many commitments that have been made have been made to me. And so when I go what happens to those commitments?” If Akaka is saying that only he—of all the American people—can get his Native Hawaiian Recognition bill through Congress and into law, then by all means, vote for Case.

THURSDAY, JAN. 26 In a brilliant counter-move to her own brilliant bullshit move two weeks ago, Chicago talk show host/Hana land-owner Oprah Winfrey “confronted” Million

Little Pieces author James Frey on her own show today about why he’s such a big fat liar. “It is difficult for me to talk to you because I really feel duped,” she told Frey, whose book wasn’t a mega-bestseller until Oprah went on the air and urged her billions of listeners to gain strength from his courageous tale of “redemption” from a life of crime and drug abuse—virtually all of which, according to the investigative website The Smoking Gun, was made up (the part about him being a loser drug addict seems to be legit, though). Anyway, Oprah also said it was wrong of her to defend Frey a few weeks ago on the Larry King show—at that time she said revelations that Frey seemed to be cynically making up stories about him supposedly assaulting cops and going to jail just to write books were “much ado about nothing.” Anyway, she now says that wasn’t a good idea because it gave people “the impression that the truth is not important” (to say nothing of the impression that Oprah was more concerned about her own credibility and popularity than some book she was pushing). But now all is right with the world, especially since Frey’s publisher—that would be Doubleday—says future editions of the book will have an “author’s note” addressing the fabrications. Future editions—is this a great country or what?

Anyway, it looks like Akaku, the great county public access cable channel that lets you watch education programs about the refraction of light, gavel-to-gavel coverage of local planning and Maui County Council hearings and slightly spacey programs about UFOs and the peace-loving aliens they contain, might be going the way of Heather Graham’s television career. According to yesterday’s Maui News, the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA)—by far the wildest and craziest of all the state departments—has just ruled that all public access contracts need to go out to competitive bid. And just to make things interesting, since it’s possible Akaku could lose its contract after it runs out this June, the DCCA wants to hold on to half of the station’s funding this year. No word on who might take over from Akaku this summer, but you can be sure it won’t be ABC.

Will the pain for Monsanto never cease? Genetically modified organisms enjoy powerful friends in Washington, but the normally compliant mainstream press is starting to ask difficult questions. Case in point was the Jan. 22, 2006 Honolulu Advertiser commentary by Hector Valenzuela, who demanded more GMO testing to study potential environmental pollution, cross-contamination, human health effects, secrecy and even corporate profits. “[T]he public should not be kept on the sidelines as corporations and universities use taxpayer subsidies to help develop and release new products into our environment,” Valenzuela wrote. On the flip side, A&B and its subsidiary HC&S move up the ladder on news that the company spread $2 million in donations among a few hundred non-profits throughout the state. It’s hard to call that anything other than good publicity. MTW

According to a January dispatch from Aarhus, Denmark, in London’s Observer, Mr. Torben Vegener Hansen, 59, who has cerebral palsy and lives at home on government assistance, is challenging the government also to pay for prostitutes to make house calls, claiming that he is unable to have sex manually because of his illness and must be accorded this “human right” by a service similar to the government’s meals-onwheels program.

REVERSE REVERSE DISCRIMINATION Scotland Yard agreed in January to pay the equivalent of about $52,000 to London police Sgt. Leslie Turner to settle Turner’s claim that the reason he failed in a 2004 assignment was that he had been “overpromoted” to the job because he is black. Researcher Jean-Louis Martin of the Universite Claude Bernard in Lyon, France, found (for a December British Medical Journal article) that consuming cannabis doubled motorists’ likelihood of a fatal auto collision, and alarming news headlines about the report followed. Less prominently noted in the article, and consequently in news reports, was that drivers impaired by alcohol were six times more likely than an unimpaired driver to have a fatal collision, thus suggesting that the generally illegal drug, cannabis, is only one-third as dangerous for drivers as the legal drug, alcohol.

LC Watch Overdoing Over-Service?

Fresh from two guilty verdicts for selling alcohol to minors last month, Casanova now has to face the LC on two more complaints, this time dealing with two alleged incidents of over-service. Rather than roll over and plead no contest to each complaint, the popular Makawao restaurant and nightclub intends to plead not guilty. If convicted of just one of the cases at the Feb. 2, 2006 Adjudication Board hearing, Casanova faces a fine as high as $2,000. If convicted of both, they’re looking at a possible license suspension (the two strikes the club picked up last month dealing with minor service, wouldn’t add onto any they might pick up today’s hearing). Part-owner Steven Burgelin, who also said he worked as an attorney in Italy years ago, said he will act as Casanova’s legal counsel. He explained that $5,000 to $6,000 for legal fees was too much, especially considering that the fines he might have to pay would be less than that. Though he added that he was heartened by the December not guilty verdicts won by Moose McGillycuddy’s of Lahaina in a similar over-serving complaint. “In these two cases, I don’t think that we did anything wrong,” he said. Both complaints concern the night of May 11, 2005. The first deals with a guy who drank at Casanova between 9:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. According to Burgelin, he consumed just two drinks, though admitted to police that he’d drank earlier in the day. The second results from a woman who, again according to Burgelin, drank three glasses of wine in Casanova between 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. In both complaints, the LC is throwing the book at Casanova. They’re charging the club the full three counts—serving the alcohol, failing to exercise due care and knowingly permitting an intoxicated person on the premises— for each case. “Before these, in 16 years of business we’ve never had a case of over-serving,” said Burgelin.

Ekolu Loves You

Listening to one of Maui’s most popular Jawaiian bands on and off the radio By Samantha Campos A pale man with spiky brown hair, glasses and a thick German accent is talking with a young, tall Hawaiian man in a baseball cap standing by the front desk. The Hawaiian tells the German to clear it with “Lukela.” The German man and his companion, both carrying large black bags with wires spilling out, walk down the expansive hallway of the Q103 radio station, past even younger musicians talking and plucking an occasional ‘ukulele. The two men enter a smaller room containing a couch, a couple chairs and a DJ manning a computerized soundboard. “Excuse me,” asks the German. “We are students from Munich, working on our final project for film school. Would it be alright if we filmed you as part of our documentary on Maui?” Lukela Keala is sitting on a stool next to the soundboard and “Shaggy,” one of the station’s DJ’s and the host of this evening’s Underground Island program. Keala listens to the filmmaker and nods his head. He then turns to two men holding guitars on the couch. “It’s okay by me,” he says. “Is it alright with you guys?” The guys smile and nod. The young filmmakers immediately outfit the men with small black boxes—wireless microphones—while the musicians tune their instruments and Keala discusses the night’s program with Shaggy.

Keala, along with the men on the couch— Akoni Dellomes and Makapu Hoopii—make up Ekolu, a popular Hawaiian band based on Maui. Ekolu is best known for their islandstyle lovers’ rock and infectious contemporary Hawaiian reggae hits, also known as “Jawaiian,” on the albums Down in the Valley and Shores of Waiehu. Their third album, Back to the Valley: The 3rilogy won a Na Hoku Hanohano award in 2004 for best contemporary album. And now, they’re getting ready to appear on Shaggy’s radio show to promote their latest album, Ekolu Music, which has spent the past six weeks on the Billboard’s world music charts. “It’s [been there] the longest of all our albums,” says Keala. They’re also here to play a few songs live in the studio, and introduce a couple of bands—No Boundaries and Kohomua—that they’ve recently signed on to their indie label, Waiehu Records. Shaggy makes sure the studio mics are placed properly on the floor in front of the couch and chairs for optimum sound when the bands play live on the air. He puts his headphones on and checks his monitor. A photographer darts in to take a few shots of the band. Darnelle—Keala’s wife and the band’s manager who’s also known as “Dar”— takes a quick shot with her disposable camera.

Meanwhile, the guys in Ekolu begin an impromptu, off-the-air warm-up. “You’re mine…. For eternity,” croons Keala. “Your lips belong to only me.” The two men have stopped playing their instruments and are now harmonizing with Keala, as he strums a ‘ukulele and sings the refrain. Eyes shut, all three men lean forward, tapping their feet and gently swaying to the smooth, silky ballad. When they’re done, Keala shifts in his seat, gently tugs at his neck and looks over at his band mates. “Dry, yeah?” he says. The other two nod, smile and clear their throats. Keala, Dellomes and Hoopii formed Ekolu back in 1995, while attending Baldwin High School. They jammed together in music class and gave their first performance at Brown Bags to Stardom, a televised youth talent contest in Hawai’i. Although they took second place that year to ballerina dancers, Ekolu went on to become one of Hawai’i’s most popular and successful bands with their first hit, “Down in the Valley,” just four years later. Now Dellomes begins playing an acoustic guitar melody that the other two then follow—Keala on ‘uke, Hoopii on bass. “About five more minutes,” Shaggy says, indicating to the band members the impending airtime. The band stops playing to shake hands with

the photographer, then do a brief rundown with Shaggy before going on air. One of the filmmakers tells Dellomes to flip his long hair—it’s covering the wireless mic. The musicians resume harmonizing a different tune. “Sixty seconds,” says Shaggy. The music stops, as the filmmakers erupt in flurried German with each other in the doorway, then one rushes into the room to make an adjustment with Dellomes’ microphone. Dellomes smiles as they go on the air. “This is Q103—I’m your host, Shaggy, and this is Underground Island,” says Shaggy into the mic. “Right now in the studio, we have EKOLU! Yayyyy!!!” After the band members introduce themselves, Shaggy cuts to one of their new tracks, “Mistah Offisah.” Once off the air, Keala and Shaggy talk about fishing earlier in the day and the “huge tako” they caught that morning. Talk turns to food, Shaggy’s desire for grits and the food they consumed while camping over the weekend. “Next time you gotta make that oyster stew, like I was telling you about,” says Keala. Then Keala and Shaggy go over what they will talk about on air next, and Dar leans in from the hallway to suggest mentioning the

new CD, which is currently being nominated for Best Reggae Album in the 9th Annual Hawai’i Music Awards. “So you just released Ekolu Music on Dec. 20 of last year,” says Shaggy, now back on the air. “And it’s doing well in sales…” “Yeah, the first week it was number nine [on the Billboards],” says Keala. “This week it’s number six in the world music charts.” “Wow, isn’t that the largest number of any band in Hawai’i? Besides Iz?” says Shaggy. “How long did it take you to do the album?” “Eighty percent of the songs were already written before we got to the studio,” says Keala. “So not that long.” “Let’s go back to the first CD,” says Shaggy. “Tell me about [The Everly Brothers cover] ‘Bye Bye Love.’” “We used to hear that one all the time at our aunties’ and uncles’ backyards,” says Keala. “So aunties, uncles—thank you!” Shaggy cues the song and talk again resumes off-air. “That’s old-school, hunh?” says Keala. “We did this back in ’99. Sound so young, yeah?” Dellomes and Hoopii laugh. Shaggy says that when they get back on the air he wants to talk about the group’s 10-year

anniversary and their history. Whenever they’re ready to play live, he’ll stop the recorded tracks. “So we’ll play a song, talk, play a song, talk,” says Keala. “Then we’ll talk about the record label stuff.” They chat easily on the air. “Let’s play another song off the new CD, called ‘Dim the Lights,’” says Shaggy. “This is old-school reggae,” says Keala. “Another favorite of mine.” “How many originals you doing on this album?” “Ten originals, three covers,” says Keala. “Check it out online…” Off the air, the guys continue talking about camping, birthdays and Ekolu’s upcoming weeklong stint in Tahiti in March. “Ah, Tahitian dancing girls!” says Shaggy. The band nods approvingly. Dar leans in and gives her husband a smile. “Eh, don’t get me in trouble, huh?” says Keala. Everyone laughs. “So you’re hugely popular worldwide,” says Shaggy, back on air. “But how many bands have you seen fizzle out before they reached the top?” “Not too much,” says Keala. “When we go off island,” says Dellomes, “a

lot of people say there are so many talented people from Maui. We push each other. Even the younger bands, you know, we’re always willing to share or open up with them. Malino, No Boundaries, Kohomua, Versatile, Conscious Healing—a lot of our friends are in good bands.” Shaggy cuts to a Sassaman track, and the boys are once again off the air. “This is a cool song,” says Shaggy. “Never heard this one,” says Dellomes. “Got stuck there, sorry.” “Look tired, Mike!” says Keala. “Got school tomorrow?” A young guy standing in the doorway answers him. Later, he will play ‘uke in an impressive, finger-flying solo on the air with his band, No Boundaries. “No, only a couple periods,” he says. “I can sleep through them.” “One minute…” says Shaggy. The décor is what you typically find in family-style Italian restaurants: tables covered with red and whitecheckered cloths and walls plastered with old posters, photos and record labels celebrating the Rat Pack in all their glory. After toasting Betty’s arrival, we contemplated the menu. Bada Bing offers a full selection of traditional appetizers and entrees and a few house originals, in addition to offering full bar service. The group unanimously decided to start with a two-foot order of garlic bread slathered in melted mozzarella ($4.99) and the famous spinach artichoke dip ($6.99). The bread was excellent and the dip quickly vanished. As for entrees, Anthony went with the Spicy Italian Pizza topped with sausage, peppers and onions ($9.99). Kim and Rudi both decided on the Chicken Marsala ($12.99). Kim took our waiter’s suggestion to have it served on a bed of garlic-mashed potatoes while Rudi stuck with the traditional bed of pasta. Brad and Samantha were won over by the special Tiger Shrimp cooked in a white wine sauce and served on a bed of pasta ($14.99). Nancy ordered the classic Eggplant Parmesan ($11.99) while Heidi opted for the Mac Nut Mahi Mahi Florentine ($17.99). I initially planned to order the Chicken Marsala or Mac Nut Mahi, but eventually settled on the Basil Seared Fresh Ahi ($17.99). As we were discussing reality shows and our recent office move to Wailuku, our waiter arrived with our food. Heidi raved about her tender and creamy fish, served on a generous bed of pasta. Nancy was equally pleased about her tender pieces of eggplant smothered in marinara and mozzarella. Brad and Samantha wasted no time digging into their jumbo prawns. After devouring his Chicken Marsala and all the sides, Rudi said his chicken was a bit dry but not so dry to stop him from finishing it in record time.

Careful, careful... As for me, my perfectly cooked fish was served with a side of root vegetables. The fish was smothered in a lemon caper sauce that was creamier than I expected but had just the right blend of flavors. The vegetables were tender but not soggy and seasoned nicely. My dish came with a side of al-dente penne pasta and sauce that could be considered a meal in itself. I enjoyed a few bites but was more than full after finishing my fish and veggies. The only real disappointment of the night came during dessert when Anthony was denied a bowl of Spumoni ice cream. Even in his state of profound disappointment—“How can an Italian restaurant not serve Spumoni Ice Cream?!” he thundered—even he admitted that he had nothing but praise for his pizza, which he somehow consumed in its entirety. Through his songs he has influenced the political scene in Jamaica during elections. Like his hero, Peter Tosh, the most revolutionary of the Wailing Wailers, he is an uncompromising Pan Afrikanist, in the tradition of Marcus Mosiah Garveyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Jamaicaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first national hero and the founder and leader of the largest Africans organization ever, the Universal Negro Improvement Association and Africans Communities League. Growing up in Clarks Town in the Parish of Trelawny, his Revivalist grandmother and Seventh Day Adventist mother immersed him in the singing, call and response and clapping mechanics of rural Jamaica. [ABORIGINAL MUSIC] Brace yourself, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cause Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to get Discovery Channel on you. You know how sometimes, when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at a tree, you see what looks like white ants? Those are termites and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more closely related to cockroaches than to ants. They live in the middle of the tree and slowly hollow it out by eating it. Poor tree doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even have a chance. But some good does come from this cruel mutilation. That is the origin of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Didgeridoo.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an instrument, possibly the oldest instrument ever, and it comes from Northern Australia. It makes that unique, low droning/buzzing noise you hear whenever anyone goes to Australia in a movie. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sort of like a hum but much more complex. The Aboriginal people claim itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the voice of the Earth, which actually makes sense if you think about it. Well, nowadays, didgeridooâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are manmade as well as termite-made and can even be purchased online. Gotta love the Internet. Anyway, the point is, Frank Heinkel (pictured right) is going to be presenting the â&#x20AC;&#x153;voice of the Earth,â&#x20AC;? along with guests playing acoustic instruments. George Clooney knocks the ball out of the park with his second directorial effort (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was his first) about newscaster Edward R. Murrow’s public confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy when the diabolical Senator was ruining lives and careers under a banner of an antiCommunist ideology. In rich black and white, Clooney uses a limited number of strictly indoor locations to convey Murrow’s insular world of newsroom television from which the highly revered newsman spoke directly to 40 million Americans every night. Clooney’s rigorous attention to detail presents the audience with a consummate depiction of the media speaking truth to power via one honest man with more integrity than any single person working in media or politics today. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Did your choice to make this movie have anything to do with how much your father revered Murrow? GEORGE CLOONEY: It started, obviously, because I grew up on a newsroom floor watching my dad work with reporters like Deborah Dixon in Cincinnati, Ohio, and watching them piece a news show together. Murrow was always the high water mark that everyone aimed for. So it was my love of that and it was certainly a tip of the hat to my dad and the sacrifices that he made over the years. What do you think journalists aim for now? I think there a lot of great journalists out there. I don’t find much fault in the journalists. In general, I think everybody would like to break a good story. I think the problem is the same problem that Murrow fought in 1954, and that my father fought in 1974; that is a continuous and diligent fight. It’s not a simple answer. I understand the problems of delivering to shareholders, and the market is getting smaller, and the money is getting less. But it has always been, and it will always be, the battle between corporate and information. It’s complicated, and I don’t know great answers to it. As one of Hollywood’s most outspoken liberals, is it plausible to think that George Clooney will one day be running for elected office? That’s ridiculous. I think I should run on the, “Yes I did it” ticket.

“Yes, I was the sexiest man alive?” No, worse than that. It starts with, “And I drank the bong water.” Do you think that the movie is also about the state of television today? We thought it was twofold in a way. It’s not just the state of television today, because it’s been a fight that’s gone on forever. It was about the responsibility of the Fourth Estate to constantly question power no matter who was in power. My father went after Jimmy Carter with the OPEC nations raising the price of gas and he went after Gerald Ford for pardoning Nixon. It was his job. He believed that authority, or government, unchallenged and unquestioned corrupts. And we’ve proven over a long period of time that it’s not unpatriotic to ask questions. The other thing we thought was important was to talk about the dangers of allowing fear to erode away civil liberties because that’s always a dangerous step. We [America] do it every 30 years or so and we panic. Usually someone capitalizes on that for their own gains, and then we fix it because of newsmen. Without them, we don’t have a civil rights movement or we don’t have a women’s rights movement or an anti-Vietnam movement. It’s newsmen; so that’s why it’s important to talk about. MTW

It takes place in Antartica where a series of events leads to eight sled dogs being stuck out in a storm. Based on an article in National Geographic. Unfortunately, it’s cold weather, so Walker will probably be keeping all of his clothes on. 100 min. (Heidi King) GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK - PG - Drama Written, directed and starring George Clooney. A chronicle of 1950’s real-life conflict between newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. This is during the Communist black listing period so it’s pretty hectic stuff. Also stars Jeff Daniels. And, it’s in black-and-white! 90min. (HK) THE NEW WORLD - PG13 - Adventure, Drama One of the most famous romances of all time, John Smith and Pocahontas. I highly doubt Smith was as hot as Colin Farrell, though. You all know the story, I just hope that it’s more historically correct than the Disney version. 150 min. (HK) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS - PG13 - Horror, Thriller - Remake of the 1979 movie that spawned one of my favorite urban legends. A babysitter keeps getting creepy calls, repeatedly being asked if she’s checked the children. Normally, I wouldn’t put any expectations on a horror movie with a piddly little PG13 rating, but this one actually looks pretty freaky. 90 min. (HK)

Cool, then you don’t have to see this rip-off, about a young bad boy (James Franco) who tries to find out if he measures up at the U.S. Naval Academy. 108 min. (Anthony Pignataro) BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE 2 - (PG13) - Comedy Martin Lawrence is back wearing the fat suit, once

In 1959, a family was murdered in a small Kansas town. Capote was sent to write a piece for The New Yorker magazine and ended up getting more involved than he expected by be-friending the murderer. (HK) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) - ActionAdventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) END OF THE SPEAR - (PG13) - Drama - Okay, so another “based on a true story” movie. This one is where some missionaries go to help an Amazon tribe. The tribesmen kill them and later one finds himself involved with the family of one of the missionaries. Twisted. 112 min. (HK) GLORY ROAD - (PG) - Sports, Drama - Just in time for March Madness, this is the story of Texas Western College, the first school in college basketball history to field five African-American starters, and the troubles they encountered on their way to the NCAA finals. Stars Josh Lucas and Derek Luke. 106 min. (AP) HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family - Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. It looks cute. 81 min. (HK) KING KONG - (PG13) - Action-Adventure - In a massive jungle on Skull Island, prehistoric creatures have been protected and hidden for millions of years. But a group of nosy filmmakers discover a giant gorilla so, of course, they have to go on a great-ape search. Their greedy quest puts them up against not only Kong but his dinosaur enemies, too. Starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody. 187 min. (KLW) THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama -

Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK) THE MATADOR - (R) - Drama, Thriller - Okay, it’s supposed to be a drama thriller, but it looks like they want to be a comedy. I don’t know. It’s Pierce Brosnan as a hitman who’s kind of over his job. He, by chance, makes friends with a regular Joe played by Greg Kinnear. When the hitman finds himself in a sticky situation, he goes to his new friend for help. 96 min. (HK) MATCH POINT - (R) - Drama, Thriller - A guy (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) marries a lovely young lady (Emily Mortimer) who happens to come from a filthy rich family. Everything is picturesque...until he meets and becomes enchanted by another woman (Scarlett Johansson). Then the scandolous activity begins. I can’t tell if this one is going to be like Fatal Attraction or something more original. Written and directed by Woody Allen. 124 min. (HK) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - (PG13) - Drama - Based on the bestselling book by Arthur Golden about the journey of a peasant girl into one of Japan’s most notorious geishas. As long as you don’t think too much about the implications of the actresses not being Japanese, the movie is entertaining in that Hollywoodepic kind of way. The cinematography and costumes are predictably gorgeous, and the villainess is deliciously wicked. 145 min. (Samantha Campos) MUNICH - (R) - Set in the aftermath of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, story follows a secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and kill the 11 Palestinians suspected to have planned the Munich attack--and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. 164 min. (KLW) NANNY MCPHEE - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Think ugly Mary Poppins, except with Emma Thompson in the lead role. Pretty routine stuff, really—nanny checks in, uses magic to tame naughty brats—but Thompson is also one of the screenwriters, so there might be something to it. Also stars Colin Firth. 88 min. (AP) THE RINGER - (PG-13) - Comedy - This has all the makings of the greatest film of the year—maybe even the decade. Johnny Knoxville plays some guy who decides to enter the Special Olympics by pretending to be stupider than he actually is. Gold! 100 min. (AP) SYRIANA - (R) - Thriller - George Clooney and Matt Damon star in this tense political thriller which unfolds against the backdrop of the global oil industry. From the filmmakers that brought us Traffic. 123 min. (HK) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - Action-Horror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampy-vixen Selene, the vampire heroine who realized in the prequel she was fighting against the wrong evil. But with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) at her side, they battle against this ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Oh, the agony! The heartache! The torture of being a vam—I mean lyca—er...hmm. 106 min. (Tallia Monterroso)

The itch for recognition is one you often canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite reach, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll teach you to be humble. Just like Emily Dickinson, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m nobody. Although with respect to Easy D, I, at least, just completed my first book tour. Whoop-de-doo. Let me set the scene. Lahaina Noon, my fifth book of poetry, was published in 2005. The poems were all written on Maui, so the publication celebration party was at Borders, and 78

morning air. Ah, but when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking to yourself, you ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talking to nobody. Lesson Three: Tuesday night in San JosĂŠ, we read at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. We had 17 audience members, and when we left, 15 books were missing. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask me how that happened. Anyway, this reading included what we in Po-Biz like to call â&#x20AC;&#x153;audience participation.â&#x20AC;? They asked me about my favorite writer, what is absolutely and fundamentally the most essential element of poetry, where poets should send their thick manuscripts of sonnets and ballads and odes (oh, my!), and why my first two books are out of print. Fortunately, all of these questions

I joked we should tour Northern California. He surprised me. If I could schedule three poetry readings there, he would use his frequent flyer miles for my trip. Born that night was â&#x20AC;&#x153;The One-Week Three-City Northern California Book Tour,â&#x20AC;? a grand sweep through all the major N CA metropoliâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;San JosĂŠ, Sacramento and Davis. Lesson One: Our first reading, on a Sunday afternoon in Sacramento, drew five people. Richard, the bookstore owner, a guy the size of a grizzly, apologized for the diminutive crowd, but we were delighted. Our books were in a store! He felt so bad he bought two books, and another went to a woman who wandered in when she caught the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lahaina.â&#x20AC;? We rejoiced. Richard was not only a large man, but a man of great largesse: there were three kinds of wine and four kinds of cheese. Score! We ate every last Triscuit. Lesson Two: On Tuesday morning, we joined Ann Arbor on her radio show Dancinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; In The Fast Lane on KFJC at 7:20 a.m. We read poems to people on their various highways to work, choosing only lines that were eye opening. A radio audience is quite attractiveâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;you just cannot see how many people there are, or are not, when your words are waves in the crisp California

required the same answer, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Billy Collins.â&#x20AC;? Lesson Four: At The Avid Reader in Davis, as local UC alumni, we had the home-court advantage and an audience of 25 or 27. We rocked the stacks. Books flew off the shelves, a few of them ours. Confetti showered the aisles, but that was mostly because I knocked over a rack of postcards. My old professor fondly recounted for 15 minutes an excellent graduate paper on Elizabeth Bishop that I never wrote. I smiled and nodded. I was standing right there, and nobody knew who I was. It was perfect. It was liberating. A book tour can really benefit a career, except that careers require that money be made. Still, my lack of fame is widespread and growing. When I returned to Maui, I found an invitation to Cedarville University in Ohio in April. They promise to fly me in, put me up and pay me for class visits and poetry readings. The University of Wisconsin asked me to drop by on the same trip. April is, like, the coolest month. In my newly humbled opinion, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be crazy not to go, right? Soon, I could be unknown all over the world, and if I break even on this next book tour, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be way ahead. Wish me luck. It sounds impossible but that’s just the kind of magic you can wield this week. Thanks for bearing with me and my numerous reminisces lately. I know you want me to get back to the boozin’ and sexin’ and rigorous introspection. Well, my friends, there’s time for all that, too. Soon, I promise. I do feel like I’ve lived a year in January already—so much has happened. I’m still reeling, actually. More friends got married, others got engaged and still others popped out kids, and I… umm… Did I tell you I went to Palm Springs, California? Yeah… that was interesting. You see, when I lived there, way back when Sonny Bono was mayor, the desert was mainly a small hideaway commune for the fabulously wealthy and famous. And it still is, for the most part. Yes, that Sonny Bono. Of Sonny & Cher? Right. Mayor. You see, I lived in Palm Springs in the time of Less Then Zero, when the rich brats from L.A. really did come in their convertible BMW’s on the weekends and do lots of blow by the pool of their parents’ country clubs. Spring Break used to be a big deal there, too, when chicks from all over would line up in neon thongs on the back of crotch rockets navigated by young dudes in muscle shirts cruising down “the strip” known as Palm Canyon Drive. Not as glamorous as the golden mid-century heyday of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack when Palm Springs was their desert playground, of course, but it’s what I got. The ‘80s. Gotta love ‘em. Even so, growing up in Palm Springs meant everyone had a kidney-shaped pool in their background—even us middle-class folks. The many, abundantly watered golf courses also made for excellent ice-blocking after scouring the abandoned wet bars of rich classmates’ parents. And we all lived on streets named after iconic celebs of yore: Sinatra, Bob Hope, Gene Autry, Dinah Shore and Gerald Ford. My hometown is where the Betty Ford Clinic is, you know... Oh, shut up. As a teen, I used to party by the cemetery down the road from George Hamilton’s house, screech down Liberace’s street on my friend’s moped, and do various after-school functions at Elvis Presley’s pad. The architecture was real neat, too. My high school was pink stucco. Bob Hope’s house looked like a flying saucer. Anyway, Bob’s dead now, my school’s been painted beige and surrounded by a huge fence and there’s casinos where cactus should be. Aw, getting old bites. So I spent some time with the family, mainly having supremely awesome dinners with my mom at her favorite haunts, like Shame On the Moon, Peter’s and Villa Abbate Ristorante Italiano, where I embarrassed my step-papa by licking my plate clean of some kind of merlot fig demi-glace type sauce. I’m a fool for figs. But I did go carousing at night, after family dinners, to check out the desert nightlife I was too young to appreciate when I lived there. So I followed the tips of my mom’s friends, who all pointed me in the direction of a block of fabulously stylish gay bars, which was just fine by me ‘cause I knew they’d like their drinks as stiff as I do. I sat as the sole bio-femme in one such place, quietly admiring Shag’s postmodern retro-art on the walls, and the gentle murmurings of young, gay love. “Is there a place to sit in here?” asked one handsome stud, who’d just walked in. “Honey, as long as I’ve got a face, you’ve got a place to sit down!” said the vivacious man-muffin to my left. “Excuse me,” said someone on my right, tapping my shoulder. “I just want to let you know, you look fabulous sitting there on your barstool.” What’s not to love?
