LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR I spoke with Bob Watada (Lt. Ehren Watada’s father) who gave a speech at the Washington D.C. peace march Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 (“Exciting Times,” Feb. 1, 2007). I wanted to know what had happened during the march because our newspapers and network TV had given very little coverage over the weekend to what seemed to be building up as a milestone in public opinion and congressional opposition to the Iraq war. What I heard was an outrageous confirmation of the media underreporting this peaceful event. Watada said, “I looked out into what seemed like a sea of humanity. The U.S. capitol was surrounded by peaceful war protestors. Those there said hundreds of thousands of people came to D.C. from 48 states… I have never seen anything like it or have I been involved in something like this, ever.” It’s shocking to see our usual media sources saying “tens of thousands” attended the march. The only coverage

on CNN was of the “raging grannies” converging on the capitol steps as if there perhaps might be some violence from the over 60’s crowd of dangerous grandmas. I heard on NPR Jane Fonda saying, “silence [on the Iraq war] is no longer an option.” There was no coverage of six members of the U.S. Congress giving speeches, nor Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson, or Iraq veterans against the war or any others except a movie star or two. The silence of the media is no longer an option while $286 million a day is spent on this tragic mistake of a war. While our soldiers die, Iraqi civilians are caught in the crossfire and America waits for this long nightmare to end, one good American, Lt. Ehren Watada, is court martialed because he has spoken out against this illegal war. We, and all free Americans for that matter, must watch his back and do our part to end the madness. -Lance Holter, Paia

SEX AND JESUS In the last Holoholo Girl column (“Sexual Healing,” Jan. 25, 2007) I, Dr. Michael Ra Bouchard, was featured about my practice as a sex and relationship therapist. I was grateful for the opportunity to share some of my views in a lengthy phone interview for the Mind Body Spirit edition. However, I would now like to clarify my position on sexuality and religion—which when read out of context in the article due to space limitations—perhaps may have been understandably offensive to some Maui Time readers. Specifically, in the interview I referred to a portion of my work involving fundamentalist Christian couples that come to the islands and call me while on their honeymoon—about a dozen or so yearly— in deep distress over their trouble consummating their marriages. Typically I

HONOLUA BLUES [On] Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s plans to develop the area around Honolua Bay and Lipoa Point, including an 18-hole golf course and 40 home sites (The Maui 10, Feb. 1, 2007): Are we to believe that this will in no way be part of Kapalua Resort? Remember when the contentious Kapalua Mauka Project District expansion was being considered, ML&P stated that it would be the final expansion of the resort. Now this? I guess none of the homeowners in this new development will enjoy status as being part of the Kapalua Resort, nor enjoy any amenities beyond those “enjoyed” by the public at large. Sure. And none of the Kapalua Club members, homeowners, timeshare owners or guests of the resorts will enjoy discounts at the new golf course, right?

The statement that an assessment is being made as to how many people can use the area without negatively impacting it sounds like a thinly disguised attempt to control the general public from accessing the bay. Can’t have the Clampetts running loose around the McMansions, can we? How about the narrow winding road along this stretch of coast? The increased traffic, especially during construction, will be an increased danger on a road that was never meant to serve an area other than rural, agricultural and remote. Maybe the company’s lobbying organization can push for a four-lane highway around the backside after they get their bypass. It is also a bit disingenuous to hear a company official state they want to protect the ecology of the bay. Their black plastic mulch blew into the Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) for decades, endangering marine life. Development has never improved the environment. The word “development” implies an evolution or trend to a higher use, to improve and make better; development as it is used nowadays describes the opposite, either disturbing, degrading or destroying the environment. And FYI: the MLCD is on state land, as is all offshore waters to three miles out from the certified shoreline. ML&P’s late CEO Colin Cameron may have lobbied the state for its creation, but that’s as far as it goes. It’s a state-owned conservation district. I hope the people with the power to decide have the courage to finally say enough. Keep the country, country! -Herman Farquahar, Lahaina

Hawaii Superferry, Inc. is proceeding as though nothing will stop their beginning inter-island service this summer. It looks like the Maui County Council has other plans. On Jan. 26, 2007 Councilman Danny Mateo wrote his colleagues asking that a committee immediately undertake “discussion and action” on the proposed Superferry since everyone is still pretty much in the dark as to how the big boats are going to affect our islands. “[A]bsent an environmental impact study, the County has not received specific indications on what plans, if any, were made to address impacts to the County’s core services, namely emergency response and police,” Mateo wrote. “Furthermore, a referral of this matter to an appropriate committee will invite discussion on any changes in the harbor lawsuit proceedings relating to this matter.” It’s tempting to say that Maui Land—one of the Superferry’s biggest sponsors—needs to start writing checks again to a certain county councilman. In any case, the check highlighted above—the last one Mateo cashed from the company—came a few months after Maui Land poured $1 million into the Superferry.

ehbrah@mauitime.com You’re a nasty bar owner with no integrity, so I suppose it’s not surprising you fired your three best girls by voicemail. Or that you didn’t even hint at what they may or may not have done to bring down such wrath. Guess that’s the thanks they get for tripling your business and keeping quiet about the rats and cockroaches that infest your establishment. But why’d you have to go and waste their Christmas bonuses on discounted lava lamps and plastic surgery? And what a fabulous idea it was to make a manager out of your pig of a boyfriend—the same guy you already fired once before. We all wondered why you would stick with such a fat slob, but I guess it’s a reminder that you’re only as good as the company you keep. So go ahead and keep raising your drink prices while lowering your pour counts, all the while hoping your customers won’t notice. And don’t even worry that the three loyal, competent, extremely popular employees you so rudely let go are now working for your competition. You know best, right?

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

Giving Back How you can promote our oceans’ sustainability and health “The ocean is giving us so much. It’s only right that we give back.” So says marine biologist Hannah Bernard, cofounder in 1996 of Hawaii Wildlife Fund. Whether you’re surfing, paddling, diving, fishing or just gazing at the deep blue horizon, the ocean gives us more than we give back. In fact, scientific studies locally and worldwide indicate our oceans and nearshore waters are in grave danger. Bernard, who has guided numerous marine environmental programs and efforts, is now promoting public awareness through this Saturday’s “Malama Maui: Think Island, Think Sustainability” at Maui Community College (MCC). The free event will feature speakers, movies, music, booths, a Keiki Corner and more. “Maui is at a turning point, a tipping point,” Bernard says. “If we can take better care of Maui, maybe we can inspire all the other islands. It’s up to all of us to sustain the health of our planet.” In 2003, Bernard and fellow marine biologist Ann Fielding coauthored, Maui at the Turning Point: Threats to Nearshore Waters and Coastal Lands and Strategies for Recovery. The report, underwritten by The Nature Conservancy, Hawai`i Community Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), surveyed 40 key ocean users and kupuna. All agreed that our nearshore waters, marine life, reef ecosystems and water quality are in decline. The “Think Island” strategy as a coordinated education campaign was one of several recommendations in Maui at the Turning Point. It extends the view shared by kupuna that the canoe is the island, and vice versa. The voyaging canoe can only carry a finite amount of resources, with the same being true of our islands and the planet as well. Through environmental education, research, advocacy and action, Bernard has been building awareness for ocean issues for the past 25 years. She helped found the Maui Reef Fund, which accepts voluntary donations from the marine tourism industry to preserve the resource they share and to urge appropriate conduct for the industry. She also helped establish Makai Watch, which is supported by Hawaii Tourism Authority, Castle Foundation and the Department of

range of fish and sea life. After years of public hearings by DLNR to assess the threat and to discuss the need to ban the monofilament gill nets, signing of new rules by Governor Linda Lingle appears imminent. Yet House Bill 1578 and Senate Bill 1831 seek to have these proposed new rules reviewed by a cultural panel, which would likely delay this vital resource conservation measure even longer. Other proposed legislation this session would create a more equitable scientific and cultural review process for ocean issues, similar to the concept of the local resource council model.

Land and Natural Resources. Makai Watch works to restore and sustain Hawai`i’s coastal resources through community involvement. By placing marine educators at sensitive areas such as the `Ahihi-Kina`u Natural Area Reserve in South Maui, Makai Watch raises awareness, conducts biological and human-use monitoring and encourages compliance with area regulations. Bernard has long advocated halting noise pollution in our oceans. “What in the world are we doing blasting our oceans with sonar?” she asks. In 1993,

added that the potential secondary impacts are, “so insidious and alarming.” She detailed the systematic exploitation of sensitive marine areas for fishing, `opihi gathering and limu collecting by people from over-fished Oahu who have no allegiance to those areas. “We have to examine whether or not all commercial scale uses of an island are compatible,” she says. “We can’t say yes to every business that wants to establish here.” The collection of fish in Hawai`i’s waters for the home aquarium industry has been very troubling to resource managers and

with Earthtrust, she spoke out against U.S. Navy plans to deploy Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS) testing. She said her father “empowered” her to do so. A retired Pentagon official, he spoke on 60 Minutes, saying the testing is unnecessary. Bernard has traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby against further LFAS testing. She applauds the work of the National Resource Defense Council, which has sued the Navy. “Destroying the health of our oceans is a far greater threat to our national security,” she says. Then there’s the projected launching of Hawaii Superferry, which Bernard predicts will kill whales. While calling for greatly reduced speed limits at a minimum, she

enforcement agencies. The Associated Press recently reported that the activity is, “loosely regulated across most of the state, where a government permit allows collectors to net as many of a species as they want, wherever they want, and whenever they want.” Bernard feels West Hawai`i has provided a good working model for a local resource council to guide decisions. Beginning in 1999, they have established Marine Protected Areas on 35 percent of the Kona Coast and have watched reef fish populations rebound. In a culture of finger pointing, it’s important to bring people and groups together to manage the resource. Another threat to Hawai`i’s nearshore ecosystems is the continued use of lay-gill nets, which indiscriminately capture a wide

The “Think Island” event will feature four award-winning films and several esteemed speakers. Donna Kahakui is the founder of Kai Makana, a long-distance paddler of many epic voyages, and is one of the event co-sponsors. “The goal is for all of us to stand together in sending the message that we need to care for our ocean and each other,” Kahakui says. She says her previous longdistance paddles have taken her across the other channels of the main Hawaiian Islands “on courses in Tahiti and New Zealand and along 55 miles of the Hudson River in New York.” Vince Lucero’s documentary, Wahine O Ke Kai, follows Kahakui’s one-woman paddle from Oahu to Ni`ihau and around Kauai. Through Kai Makana, all of Kahakui’s long distance paddles are intended to increase ocean awareness and stewardship. Kenneth Burgmaier’s Wa`a Ho`olaule`a (Festival of Canoes) explores the journey of the canoe and master carvers from the Polynesian triangle. And Kat Tracy’s Passing the Gift: Malama Honokawai will showcase the efforts of Ed Lindsey to restore Hawaiian culture in Honokawai Valley. Jeff Mikulina, Director of the Sierra Club Hawaii recently completed training to present the information highlighted in Al Gore’s, An Inconvenient Truth, which also screens. “Many of us feel overwhelmed by the thought that being environmentally friendly is difficult or too expensive,” Kahakui says. “‘Malama Maui: Think Island’s’ vision is to empower everyone to make easy and economical changes in their lives to support the health of our islands.” Ultimately, Bernard would like to see these actions become a movement that grows increasingly popular, until it becomes our way of life. “People also need to see the urgency,” she says. “If we don’t live this way, we can survive, but we won’t live well.” MTW

This means Silva will be pulling down $87,400 a year, rather than the paltry $87,000 he was making. But that brings us to the bad news: a listing of proposed salaries recently approved by the Salary Commission makes clear that Silva’s salary will pale before those of other county department heads.

Even with his $400 a year salary increase, Silva will be the lowest paid of the 14 department directors working for the County of Maui. After Silva, the lowest paid director—the guy who runs the Transportation Department— makes $89,700 a year. What’s worse, 11 of the 13 deputy directors working for the county make more money than Silva—only the Deputy Personnel Director and Silva’s own deputy earn less money each year. How can this be? Doesn’t the county know how hard Silva works? Remember when all those seniors were complaining about getting carded at restaurants— it was Silva they were calling. You think it’s easy sending investigators out to enforce regulations prohibiting alcoholic beverages on dance floors or in restrooms? And those members of the Liquor Commission and Board of Adjudication aren’t pushovers, either—you think it’s easy going to work when some of them don’t actually worship the director, but merely revere him?

RISE OF THE GMO BILLS Really bad news this week for Monsanto, the global herbicide/genetically modified food manufacturer. A bunch of anti-GMO bills are moving through the state Legislature this week. There’s HB 704, which “Provides a 10-year moratorium on testing, propagating, cultivating, growing, and raising genetically engineered coffee and taro.” There’s HB 1577, which “Temporarily prohibits the growing of genetically modified coffee” and “Allows research on genetically modified coffee in environmentally secure facilities.” Then there’s HB 1048, which “Prohibits the growing of crops that produce pharmaceuticals” and “prohibits laboratory work relating to biopharmaceutical crops.” And there’s SB 958, which calls for a moratorium on genetically modified taro production. None of these bills target Monsanto Hawai`i directly, but should they pass, they could foreshadow far more restrictive anti-GMO bills in the future. Monsanto would have fallen even further were it not for a Jan. 29, 2007 Pacific Business News story that said GMOs are now “the second biggest crop category in Hawai`i.”

BONE TO PICK Maui Land rises a notch this week on news that construction at two sites of the former Kapalua Bay Hotel—soon to be The Residences at Kapalua Bay—has stopped after crews uncovered ancient Hawaiian remains. “That whole area, that Kapalua area, is considered sacred because of the thousands of remains on the sand dunes,” Maui Island Burial Council Chairman Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell, Sr. said in a Jan. 29, 2007 online Pacific Business News story. After the remains have been handled in the most appropriate way possible, construction will resume. Man, Maui Land gets to build anywhere! MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 31 Superrich Japanese landowner and developer Gensiro Kawamoto wants to donate 50 acres and $5 million to the state Department of Education so they can build a Kihei high school, according to today’s Maui News. Now before we all celebrate, it’s my duty to point out that Kawamoto is, to put it mildy, a strange guy. Back in 1989, Kawamoto wanted to build 1,000 homes in Kihei, but dumped his plan after the Maui County Council demanded he help pay for, of all things, a school for the children who would move into his new development. He’s currently lapping up good press for his plan to rent out 18 of his homes in Kahala on Oahu to Native Hawaiian families for just $150 to $200 a month, but few are noting that back in 2002 Kawamoto sent 30-day eviction notices to 800 families. Their crime? They were renting homes Kawamoto owned in Sacramento, California and Hawai`i Kai that he wanted to sell as fast as possible. Officials in both states were out-

raged, and even appealed to Japanese diplomats for help. In the end, he gave the California renters 90 days to clear out and delayed selling Hawai`i Kai until 2004, when he sent out new eviction notices a few weeks before Christmas. In the 1980’s, he reportedly purchased $100 million in homes in Hawai`i without even looking at them first. Though once considered one of Japan’s richest men, “If he made all his investments in the same brilliant fashion he did in Hawai`i, he’s probably not the richest man any more,” University of Hawai`i finance professor Nick Ordway said in 2002. Still, Kawamoto loves the state. Last year Kawamoto put out a written statement saying, according to the Oct. 11, 2006 Honolulu Star-Bulletin, that “Hawai`i is a place for me to release my creativity.” Though for reasons not immediately apparent, Kawamoto also told the paper that, “Women are very difficult to get along with.”

THURSDAY, Feb. 1 Gotta love CNBC’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.” CNBC bills Deutsch as a “maverick CEO” who interviews “the most powerful men in business, entertainment and politics”—men like Bill Gates, Harrison Ford, Donald Trump and Joe Sugarman. Self-made men who strive for— excuse me, Joe Sugarman? Wailea’s own, the guy who used to own and publish the Maui Weekly? The guy who thought publishing sensational stories about a mythical “Big Cat” that supposedly roamed Upcountry was journalism? THAT Joe Sugarman? Yup. Tonight Joe Sugarman was talking on “The Big Idea” about—you guessed it—the infomercial, which Sugarman invented a thousand years ago to sell BluBlocker Sunglasses. “Infomercials are really entertainment,” Sugarman told Deutsch. “My genre was Candid Camera… The real key I’ve found is write an ad for it—

FRIDAY, Feb. 2 For those keeping track at home with your Official 2007 Humpback Whale Strike Tally Cards, the number currently stands at three. This is, as the Honolulu Advertiser pointed out a couple days ago, an unusually high number, given that we’re now 32 days into the year. See, last whale season saw a total of six reported strikes, with four reported strikes in each of the three seasons before that, according to the paper. The question, still unresolved at press time, is whether there’s an increase in the actual number of strikes or just the reporting of strikes. On Jan. 31 the Advertiser quoted David Schofield, who tracks whale strikes here for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Islands Regional Office, as saying that “13 to 15 knots” is a “safe speed” for boats sailing through

Poet Laureate and local resident W.S. Merwin speaks at Maui Community College (MCC) and on Mana`o Radio about how he supports young U.S. Army Lt. Ehren Watada, whose court martial for refusing to fight in Iraq and publicly arguing that the war is illegal began today at Fort Lewis, Washington. Now who would have thought that a gifted poet— one of the most thoughtful and intelligent men in America— would figure that a war begun from a series of lies and sustained by even more lies would be wrong? Or that he would find common ground with a young man who values integrity and the rule of law over imperial aggression? I know, I was shocked, too. Still, Merwin was up to his usual eloquent self. “But I hope I may speak for us all when I express my own indebtedness to Ehren Watada for his costly and painful act of conscience in a time, and with an administration, that has managed to make conscience seem downright old-fashioned,” Merwin said at MCC, according to a written copy of his remarks. “It is Ehren Watada, and those forbears of his who have taken a similar honorable and dangerous stand, who continue to make it possible for us to believe not only in democracy but in the value of human individuality.”

TUESDAY, Feb. 6 In yesterday’s Honolulu Advertiser, U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D, Hawai`i) said it’s going to be tough to get the Congress to help out the tourism industry. “If the United States is going to make this a much more major industry, we will have to promote it, especially now when many Europeans and Asians look upon America as ‘Fortress America,’” he said in the paper. “We will have to work to undo that.” Undo that? Before President George W. Bush leaves office in 2008? Aren’t you asking a bit much from the Federal Government, Dan? Anthony Pignataro thanks you for all the cards and letters. MTW

SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR

In findings that could surely be matched in the United States, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives reported in January that the country’s 100 highest-paid business executives had, by 9:46 a.m. on Jan. 2, earned an amount equal to what the average Canadian would earn in all of 2007. And The New York Times reported in December that Wall Street bonuses for 2006 were so large that one real estate broker complained at New York City’s shortage of $20 million properties and a Greenwich, Conn., Ferrari dealer complained that Ferrari hadn’t manufactured enough 599 GTB Fioranos (price: about $250,000) to fill his customers’ orders.

A Nottingham University professor warned in January that farmers are now at work in the United Kingdom breeding “stress” and “hostility” out of pigs and cows to make them more obedient en route to the slaughterhouse. The professor said the goal of such breeders is to create animal “vegetables.”

On New Year’s Day at the South African tourist attraction of Cango Caves, an overweight visitor in the “Tunnel of Love” got stuck exiting, trapping her and the 23 people behind her for 12 hours until rescuers used a pulley and liquid paraffin (to grease the rocks) to extricate her.

CUTTING EDGE SCIENCE In November Don Karkos regained sight in his right eye after 65 years. A 1941 Navy submarine explosion had knocked him out, and doctors had told him many times that he would never see with that eye again, but Karkos, 82—a retired horse farmer who works as a security guard at New York’s Monticello Raceway—was butted in the head by a horse and awoke the next day with sight regained. He told the Times HeraldRecord of Middletown, N.Y. in December that the blow he took from My Buddy Chimo was even harder than the one from the concussion.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Employees at Wal-Mart’s headquarters in China have set up a branch of the Communist Party, according to a December Associated Press dispatch, to go with five existing branches at individual stores. The party said it would not interfere with Wal-Mart management. And outsourcing of American jobs recently reached a new category of corporate employees: lawyers. An estimated 23,000 lawyers’ jobs were lost in the U.S. last year to India, where document review and legal research can be performed at about half the cost as in America, according to a December story in the News Journal of Wilmington, Del.

SIGN OF THE TIMES London’s Observer reported in November that several UNICEF offices worldwide have complained to U.N. headquarters that celebrities endorsing the charity’s work have demoralized the staff because traveling celebrities are so high-maintenance when they arrive to “help” and also because some companies making donations (for example, Gucci) are owned by parent companies whose factories exploit Third World children more than the donations help.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Jeremy Lyons, 20, was arrested in Hanover Township, Pa., in October for an alleged vandalism spree, bashing car windows with a baseball bat. A local TV station had reported the arrest of another person, and Lyons called the station. Laughing, he told them they had the wrong man. Police arrested him after tracing the call. MTW

Network Nookie The hot future of cybersex

By Liliana Begley Here’s a tip for all you little lovebirds this Valentine’s Day: If you stay with your partner long enough, they will eventually get bored with your sexscapades. Yes, even your “Reverse Pile-Driver” or whatever it is that you like to call your signature move. This is a fact, and it usually means one of two things—you’re gonna have to step up your game through technology (and I’m not talking picture-messaging shots of your extremely large member... although that does serve its purposes) or embrace technology while you embrace yourself ‘cause you got severely dumped. Luckily, there are intelligent-pervy computer geeks out there who are looking out for you and your snooglebums. The world is filled with high tech gizmos, gadgets and computer programs that are dedicated to bringing sex—whether it’s solo, as a couple, group, herd, flock or whatever to a whole new level. The term is “teledildonics” and it’s something that everyone with a pulse (and consequent sexual response to stimuli) should know about. In layman’s terms it means messing around with sex toys that are controlled through a computer. Take HighJoy, for example. Through their website you can get a membership for under $10 a month (toys not included). What you do is plug your little toy into the computer through the USB cable (in case you’re wonder-

ing, they have male- and female-specific gadgets) and then hook up with someone online. The awesome and interactive part about it is that you’re not just flicking the bean while text-ing someone. They are actually controlling your toy’s speed/vibration/movement through their computer. Neato. You can sign up for a “community” membership (i.e. the dirty whore package) or the “couples” package. With the couples membership no one besides the one person that you signed up with can contact you or control your toy. The community membership is pretty much a free-for-all. This gives you a lot of options as a couple. Threesome? Why not? It’s not like I’m gonna have to bury someone in the backyard when we’re done or avoid eye-contact in the supermarket. Hell, we could’ve just had a tryst with a 600-pound tranny named Lulu for all I know, and I don’t give a rats-ass one way or another. No pictures (if you opt out), no voice, no risk of disease or “bee-yotch gonna steal my man/woman” drama, no nothing. It’s like swinging for people who actually want to stay together. Sites like this could really add a lot of excitement and faux-danger to a limp (sorry, couldn’t help it) relationship without actually posing too much of a real, physical threat. Just make sure to set ground rules and stick to them. Now let’s switch gears and talk about just the men. Say

you screw up this Valentine’s Day. Say she wants a Coach Bag but you’re a B.A.M.F. (Broke Ass Muh Fuggah). So, you go to the Swap Meet and get her a knockoff, but instead of a Coach Bag it’s a Cooch Bag. She gets pissed, kicks you to the curb and here you are hurt and confused with nowhere to hide the salami on V-day. Don’t despair. Teledildonics is here for you. Turn on your computer and buy yourself a virtual girlfriend. They’re as cheap as $12 and get naked as long as you tap the space bar the way they like it. If you’re really adventurous, with enough research you can find these video games where you plug a “sleeve” into the computer and then mount all sorts of virtual hotties while the computer relays info to your, er, sleeve. Fun, huh? And you never have to worry about buying them presents, brushing your teeth, getting a real job or anything! You can just sit there, all day, with your tightywhitey’s around your ankles, singing the Hallelujah chorus until your heart explodes or you run out of batteries, whichever comes first. The future is bright, and buzzing. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and, uh, do stuff. Did anyone see my USB cable? It’s ‘Only Flesh’ Talking with an adult entertainer By Krista Sherer Everyone has his or her own perspective on sex and love. Most of us consider them separate—one an action, the other an emotion. We know this, yet sometimes it’s hard not to find them entangled in our mind’s bed sheets. While most of us find this occasionally challenging, I spoke with one woman who finds the division very clear. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: So what would you say your job title is? GINGER (not her real name): I would say I provide adult entertainment, but I have other people work for me as well. What are your personal feelings about sex? I love sex. I think more people should have sex. It is a wonderful thing. I think if we did, the world would be a happier place. In my mind sex is only flesh. I mean this is a business and a lot of the people that we deal with don’t want a mistress or a girlfriend. They just want companionship and they don’t want the headache that comes with having a relationship. What do people most misunderstand about your profession?

Most people think that the women that do this are drug addicts, hookers or drunks and that’s not it. Most of the women that do this job have children, are on the PTA. We are soccer moms; we have two different lives. I’ve seen some of the girls in the grocery store with two kids in the shopping cart and you would never know. A lot of us are trying to make our way through college and this is how we are doing it. Sure, we could choose to get a waitress job and make a $100 a day or we could do this and make $1,000 and not have to be on welfare or rely on ex-husbands. Instead, we do it ourselves and provide for our families. You just have to have two personalities. What do you find that most men are looking for when they come to you?

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Most of them are looking for companionship—this isn’t all about sex. A lot of times we just have lunch with them and talk to them. It is as interesting to us as it is to them. We are never looking at our

watches thinking, “Hurry up, your time is almost up.” We like it, too, because we get to meet new people. But we also see these people at bars or at our kids’ games or with their wives. We never approach them—they never approach us. They don’t want the hassles, neither do we and it works out great. I have never had a bad encounter, ever. How would you describe love? Love is something everyone has felt. We have all had our heart broken. True love is the love you feel for your child, I don’t think there is any other love bigger than that. Love is one thing but what we do is based on flesh. They can love their wives, they can love their girlfriends, what we offer is companionship and flesh and that’s all it is. I have made great friends in this business, but what we do is not based on love. Do you think society, in general, has a healthy view on sex and love? I think that if people were more open-minded about their sexuality, like if they didn’t have the jealousy or the head games, I think there would be less divorces. I think most relationships end over jealousy. I could understand if I was a wife and I found an escort’s number in my husband’s wallet. But I would rather my husband have an escort’s number than a girlfriend who he would be buying things for, taking out on a regular basis or possibly taking around my friends. I’d rather have it the other way around. What is your favorite part of sex? My favorite part of sex is definitely the cigarette at the end. No, I’m just joking. Seriously, my favorite part is getting to know them and the whole process of that beginning stage that I enjoy. So many different kinds of people come to see us. We have young men, dads—grandpas, even. They are not coming to us because their spouses or girlfriends are ugly or fat or just had babies. They come to us because they want something different. But we are not here to hurt anyone—if I felt like I was hurting someone I would stop in a heartbeat. MTW

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

Romancing the Soufflé Roy’s Kahana oozes chocolate into our souls There wasn’t anything we didn’t enjoy that fateful night at Roy’s. The martinis were clean and smooth, with nary a bruised olive in sight. The Shrimp & Pork Lumpia with Pineapple Lingham Sauce—a delightful flavor and texture balance of tangy and sweet, crispy and succulent. The Pistachio Wasabi Pea Crusted Yellow Fin Tuna was also perfection, and surprisingly glorious with Roy’s signature pinot noir.

Roy’s Kahana Bar & Grill 4405 Honoapi`ilani Hwy., Kahana, 667-7477. $$$

But the soufflé… ah, Roy’s Chocolate Soufflé merely entranced us. They make you wait for it, of course, banking on the adage of good things coming to those who do. And even the menu warns oh-so-discreetly on the bottom of its entrée page, “Please ask about our signature Melting Hot Dark Chocolate Soufflé. We strongly recommend that you order before the arrival of your entrees to allow sufficient preparation time.” The simple words “Melting… Hot… Dark” elicit barely audible moans from deep within our very souls—somewhere beyond the superficial discomfort of a full meal and bloated bellies—and the activation of previously subtle salivary glands. But the adage underestimates. A diabolical mound of dark chocolate cake sprinkled with white powder arrives, sitting rather innocuously on a plate drizzled sexily with scarletred raspberry puree and a pert scoop of Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream. Good things come in threes? Perhaps. But a frenetic kind of culinary kinesthesia lingers in the space surrounding the cake as we plunge our spoons into it, slowly, methodically releasing the hot, molten lava of chocolate inside. Possibly a better adage would be “Good things come in small packages.” For certainly, who could imagine the exaltation from such a diminutive threeinch round protuberance? Just six tablespoons of unsalted butter, four wee ounces of semisweet chocolate, a half-cup of sugar, one and a half tablespoons cornstarch and two eggs—with two more egg yolks—somehow magically unite in a concoction worthy of deifying. And worship it, we did. My companion and I immersed deeper into our bubble of bliss, occasionally crying out something about the vanilla ice cream scoop being akin to a mother’s breast, the dusty cocoa layer beneath the dense cake like the favorite sand box of our youth, the powdered sugar on top like the fresh flaky snow on a perfect ski mountain—our delirious ramblings momentarily thwarted by the flavorful tang of raspberry.

(top to bottom) Roy’s Spring Rolls, Souffle and Fruit Platter Dessert

“Yes, yes!” cried my companion between quickly diminishing mouthfuls. “Don’t stop!” We noticed a steadily growing crowd of servers and diners stopping to marvel our gastronomic glee—our seemingly very unprivate lesbian dessert porn, if you will. But alas! I have another saying for you. All good things come to an end. Our server returned with more tempting options for a return trip, as we glowered sullenly over the last red-brown smears of chocolate and berry goo. “You know you can also do it with Bailey’s or peanut butter or Gran Marnier and light it on fire,” she said. “Just cut a hole in the middle and pour it through.”

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Swollen Members Thursday (Feb. 8), 9 p.m. at Casanova’s; Friday (Feb. 9), 9 p.m. at Paradice Bluz [HIP-HOP] It’s always a special treat when I don’t have to think of a witty title for these picks. Swollen Members kind of says it all, don’t you think? This Canadian group has released five pretty major albums. According to Wikipedia, it’s said that their name “Swollen Members” means “Phat Crew.” Uh huh. Sure, and I never fantasize about The Rock (naked) rescuing me (naked and artificially improved) from my dismal existence. Anyway, their music is snazzy, underground-ish and makes you feel like drinking a 40 in a smoky little room while giving someone a booty-dance. Gotta love it. Tickets: $20. [LILIANA BEGLEY]

Run for the Whales Saturday (Feb. 10), 6 a.m. at the Polo Beach parking lot in Wailea [FUNDRAISER] It’s Whale Season, and we all know what that means: time for another leg-stretching, heartracing fundraiser. There’s the half marathon, 5K run, 2K walking course or 2K “fun run” for the kids. Racers will compete for medals, leis and free whale-watch passes, and every entrant will get a t-shirt, continental breakfast and a nice steaming bowl of exhaustion. According to a Pacific Whale Foundation press release, the Run benefits “the marine science education programs offered by Pacific Whale Foundation for Maui schoolchildren” which “take place in the classroom/science labs at Pacific Whale Foundation’s Discovery Center and in the field.” These programs include “water testing programs, eco-friendly tidepool explorations, whale watches and career mentoring programs.” And that is why you must run—for the whales and other sea creatures that cannot run. They can swim pretty fast, but they can’t run… yet. To register or get more information, call 249-8811. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

V-Day WreckShop III Wednesday (Feb. 14), 3 p.m. at Lokelani Intermediate; 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz [HIP-HOP] Does anyone remember when 2 Live Crew came to Maui? Anyway, this is going to be better. 808 Connects is planning on bringing us all to a whole new level of hip-hop. And you thought it couldn’t be done. First off, there’s the all ages show—music, contests, hundreds of teenagers in baggie pants, and then there’s the 21 and over show—all of the above minus the teenagers plus a lot of alcohol. Luckyiam (pictured with The Grouch) from Living Legends will be performing at both shows, as well as many others. In case you didn’t know, the Living Legends are really awesome. Check out their music, and you won’t want to miss this chance to experience it live. I pinkie swear. Tickets: $30 (for allages event, kids get in free with paying adult), Lokelani Intermediate and Paradice Bluz. [LB]

DAY

Jerry’s Friends Wednesday (Feb. 14) and next Thursday (Feb. 15), 9 p.m. at Charley’s [ROCK/ROOTS/AMERICANA] In the 1970’s, Marin band New Riders of the Purple Sage was largely considered the greatest psychedelic country-rock band in the universe. It was formed, not surprisingly, by former Big Brother and the Holding Company electric lead guitarist David Nelson and Grateful Dead banjo player/pedal steel guitarist Jerry Garcia, when the Dead was offtour, and eventually shared management and stages with the Dead on tour. Anyhoo, Nelson has re-configured the re-configuration as of late, as his aptly named band, the David Nelson Band, featuring Barry Sless, Mookie Siegel, Pete Sears and John Molo—members of bands for various members of the Dead, as well as Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna and Rod Stewart—takes Paia by storm with its psychedelic roots-rock jamming and “almost acoustic” good-time style. Tickets: $20 at the door. For more info, visit online at www.NelsonBand.com.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Hannibal’s History Too much information hobbles horror The Hannibal Lecter horror movie franchise (Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and the Manhunter-remake Red Dragon) gets yet another installment from best-selling novelist Thomas Harris. With more than 150 films to his credit, iconic film producer Dino De Laurentiis valiantly attempts to compensate for the material’s manifest shortcomings by stacking the cinematic deck with an ardently talented cast and crew that execute the story with bold performances against a European backdrop.

Hannibal Rising

★★★★★ Rated R/117 mins.

French actor Gaspard Ulliel (Strayed) plays the incipient cannibal who, after his affluent parents are murdered by Nazis near his family’s Lithuanian castle, witnesses the cannibalization of his younger sister by a desperate pack of rogue soldiers who take the siblings hostage in a nearby hunting lodge. Hannibal goes temporarily mute before he’s taken to a brutal Soviet orphanage that solidifies his detached reasoning of cruelty before escaping to Paris where his widowed Japanese Aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li—

Memoirs of a Geisha), welcomes him. It isn’t long before Hannibal’s indoctrination into Japanese traditions, French cuisine and medical techniques, sends him on a revenge-killing spree unlike any other. Director Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring) grabs your attention with a staggering wartime opening sequence that looks like something out of a Paul Verhoeven movie. A fighter plane crashes into a Nazi tank near the castle grounds, and production designer Allan Starski (The Pianist) puts the metallic taste of war into your mouth as the dark shadows of death fall on the winter ground. Immediately, the filmmakers establish an anti-war theme that foreshadows an imagined aftermath of personal devastation that will inevitably deal out bizarre internalized forms of violence for the surviving victims and their oppressors. However, it’s here too that the audience starts to be robbed of their own dark and abstract ideas about the source of Hannibal’s nefarious desires. As suspense and horror master Alfred Hitchcock taught filmmakers and audiences, the true nature of fright lives in the piqued imagination of the spectator. Using our imaginations to fill in the blanks about the motivations of a Norman Bates or a Hannibal Lecter is half of the fun. In Hannibal Rising, our protagonist is the killer. With a deep dimple on his left cheek that doubles as a scar of unimaginable origin, Gaspard Ulliel is endlessly watchable. Ulliel’s strikingly handsome features belie the internal wounds of Hannibal’s traumatic childhood that we

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

The master of dine and dash become privy to. And so, when a butcher at a public French market insults Lady Murasaki about the direction of her genitalia, we look forward to Hannibal’s bloody revenge that will necessitate the use of a samurai sword in the service of a comical decapitation. The scene takes place at a clearing near a lake where the butcher fishes, and it is the most enjoyable sequence of the movie for the gallows humor that the filmmakers inject. Enter French Inspector Popil (Dominic West) to investigate the murder, and provide the story with a retrograde momentum where the author should have introduced a more powerful element of suspense and dangerous interplay between the characters. Having whetted his

appetite for murder, Hannibal sets about hunting down and dispatching the soldiers that cooked his little sister and shared the broth of her soup with him. Details about Hannibal’s taste for consuming the cheeks of his victims seem a perfunctory touch, as does his evolving love affair with his aunt who becomes a willing accomplice to his crimes. Director of Photography Ben Davis (Layer Cake) captures dense visual compositions that succeed in giving fertile, classical underpinnings to Thomas Harris’ formulaic plot. For all of the story’s lack of suspense and terror, it is Ulliel who makes the movie dramatic. His is an audacious performance that bewitches the viewer into relishing something that we should not. But there is nothing frightening here. MTW

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I’m always amazed at how sex-phobic (and, of course, sex-obsessed) our culture is. Certain people make a fuss over anything provocative; even an accidentally-exposed breast can be major drama. Violence, on the other hand, rarely generates such commotion. I think it’s sad that some people would rather see two people kill each than get it on (especially if those people are different races, or the same genders). You ultra-rational, progressive Aquarians are supposed to be the ones helping move our society along in the right direction. Have you been doing your part?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) I’m not a very organized person; when I clean my apartment, I simply gather armloads of things from the floor, stuff them in the closet, and slam the door shut. To find one of those items later, half the closet’s contents have to come out so I can get to the one I want. Your minds work similarly; I’ve watched Pisceans work their way towards an idea, taking so many detours, sidetrips, and tripping over so many non sequitors that it’s a wonder they get to where they’re going at all (often, they don’t). Totally reorganization is too much to ask, regarding my closet or your head. But imposing some orderliness, on both, might be a good idea. I just described, above, the Piscean brain as a cluttered closet. Yours, on the other hand, is often like an indoor shooting range: a simple, spare space with a target straight ahead, and the means to reach it. Naturally having that much focus is often extremely useful; occasionally, however, blinders that block out everything but your goal are actually the opposite of helpful, because you miss out on extremely important and relevant information. That’s what’s happening this week; although your objective is in plain sight, there are plenty of things that could potentially trip you up along the way, and will, unless you learn to see the big picture.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) If you see someone crying on the train, go ask them what’s wrong. If a stranger smiles at you, don’t be so suspicious as to not smile back. Treating people like friends—or at the very least potential friends—is totally the way to go this week. That’s right, it’s time to exercise your trust, which, like a muscle, has been slowly atrophying. If you don’t give it a workout now, soon you won’t be able to use it at all. A trustless life is not a very satisfying one. Avoid that sorry fate by having trust in others before you know they deserve it, and giving total strangers a chance to trust in you.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Why is youthfulness inherently beautiful? Why don’t we, instead, revere and lust after the signs of a life well-lived? Shouldn’t wrinkles and scars be sexy? I guess for many people they are, of course, but as a whole our culture is fairly youth-obsessed. You’ve done plenty of drooling over sexy bodies and pretty faces, of late. This week, give face time to some of the people whose beauty is more internal than external. You’ll get more out of it than the six-pack abs crowd could ever give you.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) When considering a mate, chemistry is far more important than looks, status, location, or timing—especially for you Cancers. You’re wonderful, but let’s face it—you’re also occasionally a handful. You need someone who can not only handle that, but actually enjoy or love it. Of course, no one out there wants to completely prop you up emotionally, so if you can’t yet handle it all on your own, don’t bother looking for someone to do so for you. But there are plenty of people who’d love to come along for the ride. Find one of them, instead of trying to convince whoever’s nearby that they’d love it, too (because, they probably won’t).

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I like that you think you deserve the best. Your confidence is powerful, but it shouldn’t substitute for actual worth, especially when trying to capture someone’s attention or affection. You do have a heck of a lot going for you, but because you’re lazy, you depend a little too heavily on just your natural radiance and poise. This week, dust off some of your metaphorical trophies, and show whoever you’re trying to impress that there’s some substance behind all that shine.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I wish that we could mix and match our characteristics, or even share them with others, sort of like Mr. Potato Head. You, for instance, could unscrew your phenomenal work ethic and lend it to someone else for a while. While they were transcending their laziness, you could borrow a willingness to luxuriate in pleasure and luxury, which is certainly something I wish you would try out a little more often. Most people who work as hard as you do also play as hard, but you just forget that part of the equation most of the time. This week, won’t you remember it and make good on it?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You like things that make sense and balance each other out: Commit a crime, suffer a punishment; do a good deed, receive praise and acknowledgement. But as you know all too well, not all crimes are punished, and not all good deeds are noticed, let alone rewarded. The world simply isn’t that neat and fair. This week, however, you can make it a little more so—if not for yourself, then for someone else. Don’t get confused, though; it’s not your turn to mete out punishments or hand out prizes. Your job is just to make sure they go to the right people.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Last night I had sex with Jesus. I dreamt he’d come back for a visit and I had hot, likely blasphemous, joyfully dirty sex with him. I think you’re probably the only ones who could understand what a great dream it was. You’re always pushing boundaries, challenging taboos, and repudiating pointless prudishness, so this kind of thing is right up your alley. Oh, wait, did I say you’re always pushing boundaries? Lately, you’ve sort of been copping out and toeing the line. Care to get your edgy, button-pushing, taboo-shattering reputation back? This week you can.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) So much can potentially happen in a week (or not) that to attempt to describe it all here would be virtually impossible; instead, I make my best guesses and predictions and hope that you guys find it useful, thought-provoking, entertaining, or funny. Every once in a while, though, I hit the nail on the head, and I have to confess, that feels good. You, too, in one area in your life, are more or less just making stabs in the dark. This week, though, you’re likely to be spot on. Take note of what did the trick, so you can revisit this minor miracle later.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Couples who fight all the time actually have an advantage over you two. Those bickering buddies know that their tiff will blow over, because it’s happened dozens of times before already. But you’re not sure how this fight is supposed to play out, because nothing like it’s ever happened before. Look to those seasoned battleaxes for inspiration and guidance. They know how to have a conflict, and how to move past it. It sounds horrible, I know, but it’s not all bad. The nice thing about duking it out with someone is that if and when you’re done fighting, you’re almost always closer and tighter than you were before.

Bite Me Special V-Day picks in books, movies and music Trust the Man Rated R. 103 min. You Suck: A Love Story, by Christopher Moore 328 pages. William Morrow. [HARDCOVER FICTION] There’s nothing more romantic than a good vampire tale. And nothing sexier than one featuring Starbucks-drinking, selftanning, adolescent bloodsuckers in love, a healthy dose of “Nosferatitude” and general vampyric screwball antics. Booklist calls Christopher Moore’s follow-up to 1995’s Bloodsucking Fiends a “hilarious mockery of the pursuit of the appetites.” Since its release last month, You Suck has been holding court in the Top 10 list of New York Times bestsellers. And why wouldn’t it? Like it says on Moore’s website, “If you’re looking for San Francisco scenery, hot vampire sex (similar to hot monkey sex, but hotter), giant shaven cats, the Cheddar Princess of Fond du Lac, and the Fighting Beatniks of Allen Ginsberg High School—four words: YOU SUCK. It doesn’t.”

[DVD/ROMANTIC COMEDY] I’ll be honest: this movie did not get rate well on the Tomatometer—the review gauge for the movie critics website, www.rottentomatoes.com. They mostly diss it for not being more like a Woody Allen film, but the extremely likeable cast—David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup and Maggie Gyllenhaal as lead characters; Eva Mendes, Ellen Barkin and Garry Shandling in supporting roles—and the tonguein-cheek title should dictate there are redeemable qualities at work here. Perhaps the movie critics haven’t had to date in this decade, for I believe the story, while “sitcomesque”—which is fine by me, I happen to like, nay, love sitcoms—addresses urban modern love and all its selfish hypocrisies and pretentiousness: men who don’t grow up, sex addiction, the-grass-is-always-greener-itis, et al. And there are moments that are uncomfortably painful, others that are hilarious, and some that are touching—often, simultaneously. It’s a romantic comedy, after all, and like real relationships, it will be alternately funny and not. Overall, I agree with amateur reviewer “Brian C.” from Kansas City who wrote, “Wity [sic] writing, and characters that are allowed to have some flaws made this one of the first chick flicks that did not make me want to vomit.” Yes... Just like a real relationship.

Return To Romance, Matt Catingub Orchestra Of Hawaii Mountain Apple Company, 2006 [CD/EASY-LISTENING] This is the equivalent of a feel-good Manhattan Transfer Christmas Album, only it’s all-love, all-thetime. Polite, tasteful, pleasant… oh, break out the bubbles and bearskin rugs, people—we’ve got sax solos. So basically, it’s soothing V-Day music for that candlelit dinner you’re making for your parents because you’re such a thoughtful kid. Well, that and you’re hoping to get on their good side so you can borrow the car next weekend for the SCCA races but whatever, let’s get back to the music. These are all the classic romantic tunes you (or your parents) love, as arranged by Honolulu Symphony Pops conductor Matt Catingub and accompanied by other great local musicians. There’s some lovely crooning by Patti Austin, Amy Hanaiali`i Gilliom and Raiatea Helm, distinctive Na Leo and Brothers Cazimero harmonizing and the requisite rendition of “When I Fall In Love”—this time with a smooth Jimmy Borges supplying vocals. Most swoon-worthy tracks: “How Deep Is The Ocean?” featuring Keali`i Reichel, “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?” featuring Amy Hanaiali`i Gilliom and “As Time Goes By” with Matt Catlingub.

22-JAN. 19)

DROP OFF

33 N. Market St. Ste. 201, Wailuku

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

An old high school flame recently contacted me on MySpace.com. He used to live down the street from me in Palm Springs, which was convenient back when I was 15 and didn’t yet have wheels. We had a casual thing, as he was a bit of a drunken punk at the time, and I was a sensitive girl (imagine that) intent on developing some sort of false belief that I could save and/or change the mohawked messes I dated. Needless to say, it didn’t end well. And we haven’t talked in almost 20 years. Until now. This is what he said: “I was going to comment on your latest blog, but I ran out of time and had to leave for tonight’s AA meeting. It’s sad because I know that I had an elegant if not profound response for you, and now it’s lost. “The coffee was too strong and I’m rambling, and there was a point. Relationship, no relationship, house, apartment, serial dating, or self-imposed singularity, it’s all good if you’re good with yourself. This whole growing up thing is a horrible fallacy, and I find those who think they are the mature ones by falling into these prescribed molds that society struck in some long forgotten suppressed time are mostly trying to avoid some personal issues that they are afraid to face. Then again I could just be justifying my own single apartment living roommate having silly ass. “One last thing, and I don’t even know if it’s relevant to you anymore at all. I should have committed to you way back in ancient history. I wanted to, I really did. You were one of the most beautiful and amazing women I ever dated. Unfortunately, I was a chicken shit, scared out of my mind of failure, getting hurt, and missing out on something unknown that I never had happen anyway to miss out on. It probably means nothing to you now almost 20 years later, but it’s bugged me for years. I feel like I did you wrong back then, and I regret that. It may be cliché, but if I knew then what I know now... “Well, let’s just say I wouldn’t have let childish fears stop me jumping in the deep end. I can say this though—I think of you fondly, and often, and sometimes every now and then I catch a scent that reminds me of you, and it leaves me happy for days thinking about the time we did have together. “Okay I’ll shut up now. – SK” Naturally, my first reaction when I read this was, “Wow—he’s in AA?” and then, “Holy [expletive], is this for real?!” Every girl who’s ever had her heart broken has wanted to hear these words—preferably sooner than 20 years later but still. I couldn’t believe my luck. When we’re younger we all want acknowledgement that we’re “amazing,” in our own way. And being dismissed leaves a lot of us feeling like we need to keep searching for some kind of outside resolution—or at least until the next rebuff. Which, considering how bummed I was back then, made me a little mad about the recent letter. What gives this guy the right to say this after so long? Why the hell couldn’t he realize it then? Dumbass. But the thing is, had I not suffered in love, felt the stinging pain of rejection, had my heart smashed to bits on the sidewalk and been trifled with all those years of romance following SK, I wouldn’t be so goddamned bitter and enjoyably cynical now! I kid, of course. But those failures made me realize that what I needed most was to—Cliché Alert!—love myself. And I do! Love myself. A lot. So much so that I no longer need anyone to resolve that for me. Which is exactly when the “right” person comes along. And he has. So for all that I have SK to thank, and will now respond with a grateful “Duh, I told you so,” after which I will buy myself an Extra Strong Dark bar of Chocolove, then go home to give a sloppy wet kiss to someone who appreciates me and all of my rejected, bitter, older and absolutely amazing parts. Samantha Campos would like to give the “people” who stole her car last week a big fat candy heart that says, “Bite Me.” MTW
