Free Advice! Ask a Martial Arts Advertising Press Release Dear Martial Arts Advertising Press Release, I love my husband dearly—really, I truly do—but lately, he’s been even more of a chowder-brained idiot than usual. His latest craze, if you can call it that, is ice fishing. It’s all he ever talks about, morning, noon and night. I tell you, he’s obsessed! And this is really starting to piss me off, mostly because we live in the state of Arizona. The last time I mentioned this, he shook his head and told me to sit down and read something called Ice Fishing for Dummies. What can I do? -Fed up in Phoenix

Dear Phoenix, WANT TO BECOME THE “GO-TO” MARTIAL ARTS STUDIO IN YOUR COMMUNITY? With television reaching 98 percent of the homes in the U.S., TV advertising is absolutely essential for the promotion of your studio. As you know, finding students for your dojo is not always an easy task. You have to let people know that you’re out there. TV advertising is the most cost-effective way to reach potential clients and drive them through your doors. Let me tell you why. Dear Martial Arts Advertising Press Release, My boss just doesn’t appreciate me. I mean, I work really hard, but it sometimes seems that he just doesn’t care. A couple times I’ve faced him on this, only to have him leer at me and suggest that maybe what I ought to do is start wearing a lowcut top and a short skirt. At first I actually thought about taking him up on his offer, but then I remembered that I’m a hetero-

sexual male. Any advice? -Perplexed in Poughkeepsie Dear Perplexed, • Immediate lead generation. An effective 60-Second TV Spot is one that’s carefully scripted in such a way that leads the viewers who are in need of your services to take action immediately. • Air time is not as expensive as you think. We can arrange to have your local TV spot aired on the cable channels people watch the most. We recommend advertising on national cable networks like CNN, Oxygen, ESPN, TBS, Lifetime, USA Network, etc., as you can reach a large number of local viewers at a fraction of the cost of advertising on the major networks. Dear Martial Arts Advertising Press Release, I think Joan Rivers is in love with me. I don’t have any proof of this, but I have my suspicions. Also, that the toaster wants to kill me. That I’m pretty sure of, because the coffee pot told me. My question is this: who won the 1948 World Series? -Wondering in Walpole Dear Wondering, By presenting you and your message on television, you’ll increase your company profile and become the “go-to” dojo for your entire community. The head of our production team, Bob Francis, wrote, produced and directed 8Minute Abs, the 60-second TV spot which sold over $20 million in 18 months and is still being sold on the internet today! Imagine having that kind of talent producing TV spots touting you and your martial arts studio! MTW

Congratulations! You have officially won the Worst Neighbor in America Award! I thought you might’ve been tied with maybe Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, or even Dick Cheney but no, you win by a landslide—which, by the way, I hope fills your backyard and silences the squawking parrot you insist on keeping. I’ve often thought about taking a hand grenade to that neglected bird of yours, but I realize it’s not the poor animal’s fault. It clearly has issues, probably due to the fact that your baby is constantly crying and you yell at your other kids, who in turn, crank up the stereo and keep replaying that crappy American Idol shit. Or maybe that’s you singing like William Hung on steroids. But on top of all that, now you’ve decided that it would be a good idea to bring a rooster into the situation. Are you insane?!? Don’t you see the homes two feet to your left and right? You don’t live in the country, sweetheart. Of course, if I had a kazillion dollars, I would buy you your own island to live on, where you wouldn’t torture anybody else with your dysfunction. But since I’m poor, and can’t move out of this hell you’ve created for me, I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest your bed and keep you awake at night and jolt you awake every morning in anger, like you do to me every goddamned day. Oh, and you can pick up your award, after I shove it up your ass.

Hiking to NARS Why you shouldn’t think about it

In wilderness is the preservation of the world. -Henry David Thoreau Non-native plants and wild pigs aren’t the only invasive species threatening the delicate ecosystem and watershed of West Maui’s Kahakaloa Natural Area Reserve System (NARS). Careless human explorers are blazing trails through this pristine wilderness area’s ridges and valleys. “We are concerned that unchecked and uncontrolled human presence and trail formation will jeopardize the watershed area and damage the ecosystem,” said John Cumming, district manager for the Department of Land and Natural Resource (DLNR) Forestry and Wildlife division. “This is no place for the adventurous to be encroaching, tromping around and disturbing the fragile environment.” Set up to protect the best remaining examples of native ecosystems and geological sites on state-managed lands, NARS protect entire ecosystems as opposed to just a single species. The reason stems from the fact that individual species have difficulty surviving when parts of its habitat are destroyed. Located within the Kahakuloa Ahupu’a (land division), the NARS includes native communities of endangered plants and forest bird habitat. The Reserve also protects major watershed areas that provide fresh water to people living at the base of the mountains. Bruce Turnbull, a sculptor, teacher and 36-year resident of Kahakaloa, is alarmed

by these new trails being cut into the mountainside. He’s noticing new ones traversing next to his community’s watershed and into the NARS area. “The frequency of use on these newly cut trails is evident,” Bruce told me as he pointed out the cut tree branches and trampled ferns revealing bare earth during a recent hike through the area. “The heavy foot traffic is not allowing nature the time it needs to repair itself.” As one of the caretakers of the water catchment system leased to Kahaklaoa rancher Buddy Nobriga, Turnbull hikes into the forest once a month as part of his job maintaining the intake. Lately, he’s had to help lost hikers stumbling within the forest area. He said he often sees groups of hikers gather in the upper pools of the Makamakaole River. He’s anxiously watching these trails grow wider. It’s clear why so many people are heading up there. The kehau (mist) dancing along the mountain ridges and valleys gives a feeling of Jurassic Park adventure. Yellow and red flowers on native ‘Ohia trees, wild orchids and native ferns sparkle through the dewdrops. The silence is only broken by the songs of birds. Walking into the region is like stepping back in time. Turnbull worries the increase in human traffic will not only cause erosion and sediment into the streams and water catchments, but also introduce invasive species’ into the native ecosystem. DLNR’s John Cunning is worried, too. The state established NARS to protect one of Maui’s rare and extremely sensitive native forests. “With every entry into these sensitive areas comes the threat that a new unwanted

weed may be introduced, or a rare and endangered plant may be unknowingly destroyed,” he said. Turnbull feels that would-be adventurers looking for exciting new spots to explore will continue to blaze paths into the wilderness. And since this NARS is land-locked and surrounded by private property—by the Boy Scout Camp, “Camp Maluhia” and Maluhia Estates—the only way to access it is to get permission or trespass. Most, it seems, are opting for the latter. In fact, Boy Scout Executive Robert Fawcett said he’s frustrated by hikers ignoring their “No Trespass” signs that lead onto the Boy Scout property from the highway. “People just keep cutting and pulling back the fence to access the area,” he said. Turnbull added that he’s watched groups of people entering through a hole cut in the fence. After crossing over the Boy Scout camp land, just outside the camp boundary, they climb ropes that have been tied in the trees to allow access to the ridges and access the forest area. “Removing these ropes is one way to help stop the illegal activity and encroachment,” said Turnbull. “People are in exploration mode now. This needs to stop before the activity snowballs. We need to take the steps to protect this rare ecosystem before it’s too late.” MTW

Some people like to knock the Maui County Department of Liquor Control for coming down hard on locally owned bars and restaurants while leaving all the big resorts alone. A glance over a year’s worth of LC Board of Adjudication agendas shows precious few resorts falling into their gun sights, but it does occasionally happen. For instance, on July 29, 2005, the LC sent an 18-year-old female decoy on a sting operation against the small retail store in Wailea’s Diamond Resort: 15 acres of luxury offering 72 Japanese-themed suites. That she was able to buy two 12-ounce cans of Heineken explains why the store’s general manager had to appear before the LC board on Feb. 2, 2006 Pleading no contest to one charge of serving liquor to a minor, the GM offered a couple details about the sting that neither deputy prosecuting attorney Andrew Martin nor LC Director Franklyn Silva refuted or even acknowledged during the hearing. According to the GM, the minor used by the LC for the sting didn’t simply walk into the store, head to the refrigerator, grab a couple cans of beer, then walk to the cashier and offer up some cash. Instead, the GM told the board that the minor talked a lot to the cashier—so much so that she felt “distracted.” In addition, when the cashier asked to see the girl’s ID, the minor decoy apparently kept it in her wallet and placed her finger over the card’s bright red stripe saying “Under 21 until Dec. 2, 2007.” Of course, it was the cashier’s responsibility to ask the girl to remove the ID from her wallet and hand it to her—which the GM admitted the cashier never did—but still, there’s no denying the technique was a tad sneaky. Because this was Diamond Resort’s first conviction for anything, the board fined them $2,000 but suspended half that amount if they can avoid serving another minor for a year.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15 Could it be? Are the days of the Hawai’i Gas Cap numbered? Will the state Legislature actually get rid of the ultracontroversial cap? Of course, I speak of the Gas Cap law, not the actual Gas Cap, which never—if you noticed—capped anything. See, free market types love to argue against price caps because they say artificially lowering a given price will ruin businesses, kill jobs, etc. And they—from Governor Linda Lingle on up—were more than vocal in their outrage against State Senator Ron Menor (D, 17 th District) and his big Gas Cap plan. Only thing is that the cap didn’t lower any gas prices. Gas prices rose before the cap, and they rose when the cap was supposedly capping them. Ditto oil corporate profits—they rose spectacularly during the gas cap. For the refiner Tesoro, they never had it so good as when Hawai’i was in the throes of the business-ruining, jobkilling gas cap.

THURSDAY, FEB. 16 On this, the same day The Maui News publishes Maui County Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson’s op-ed piece demanding that the county address West Maui infrastructure problems—water, sewage and roads, to name but three—before approving more big development projects, the state Land Use Commission (LUC) plopped down in the swanky but doomed Kapalua Bay Hotel to discuss the Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s big Pulelehua project (see our Jan. 26, 2006 story “Toxic Water” for more on water quality concerns facing the proposed residential development). Of course, this is going on amidst well-meaning but terribly misguided efforts to further hobble the LUC—namely, by passing HB 2353 and

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

SB 2316, which would turn the commission from a quasi-judicial body into one that’s “quasi-legislative.” The concern is that this is just another step towards getting rid of the LUC’s greatest protection to citizens: unlimited speaking times for anyone who files a petition challenging a pending project… By the way, Menor says they can repeal his gas cap over his dead body. Hurray—for what, I have no idea, but Hurray!

FRIDAY, FEB. 17 This always happens to me—whenever I go and try to defend some government agency or official, he, she or it goes off and does something completely boneheaded and indefensible. Today, the LUC voted six to nothing that people who live in the Pu’unoa agricultural lands are doing all the farming they need to do. See, everyone who builds a house up there—and consequently makes landowners Jim Reilly and Peter Martin just a little bit richer—has to come up with some sort of “farm plan” that says they intend to do farming, since all that wonderful ocean-view hillside land is zoned as ag land. In any case, the Hawaiian families who first brought the suit and live in nearby Kauaula Valley—they actually grow taro on their lands—are unconvinced. They’re vowing to appeal the decision all the way to the Hawai’i Supreme Court, which if you remember the news from last week, is pretty busy right now.

SATURDAY, FEB. 18 Looks like the bloody trauma mess that is Akaku, Maui’s public access cable channel, may finally be over. According to a press release sent out this weekend by Lance Collins—the LC Adjudication Board member who in real life works as an attorney—mediation between the two warring Akaku Board factions has finally brought about a settlement. And it looks like the real deal, too: for

instance, both factions “have agreed to refrain from making disparaging remarks about each other, and have agreed that any investigations into alleged misconduct on the part of any Board members will be terminated.” See, they’re all friends again. Seriously, all this came about because super-developer Everett Dowling began a two-track policy to hobble Akaku—why, who knows—that involved promoting state legislation to slash the station’s funding as well as packing the Akaku Board of Directors with cronies like Wailea 670 developer Charlie Jencks. A board faction headed by member Jay April then retained Collins’ legal services and started fighting back. As part of the deal each side will have to give up two board seats and then hold an election. Oh, and all board members—who theoretically took their seats because they support the station—also have agreed “not to promote

any legislation that would divert funds from Akaku…” Sounds silly, but it’s what started the whole mess.

SUNDAY, FEB. 19

U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, 2nd District) threw me a hanging curve today, which is unusual, because I didn’t think government officials worked on Sundays—especially with Presidents’ Day coming up and all. Anyway, the guy who says he wants Daniel Akaka’s U.S. Senate seat because the old guy is an old guy is apparently worried over who his own successor’s going to be. So he sent over an email listing the “Top Ten Qualities Required To Represent Hawaii’s Second Congressional [District].” They run the gamut from “Leadership” to “Communication/Outreach,” hitting all the political and corporate buzzwords. The real kicker though is Number Five: “Long-term Commitment.” Apparently, Case—who got the congressional job way back in 2002 and is currently campaigning against Akaka on grounds that he’s been in office too long—feels that whoever takes over his congressional seat should be willing to stay in Congress a long time. “A small state 5,000 miles from D.C. relies on continuity in seniority, experience and relationships,” Case wrote. “Just as is the case with Hawaii’s U.S. Senate representation, this is a time of transition for us in the U.S. House, and we must expect that, with our consent, our Representative can and will make a long-term commitment to the job.”

MONDAY, FEB. 20 You tell ‘em, Ed.

TUESDAY, FEB. 21 One more thing on that LUC decision on Pu’unoa farming: Launiupoko next door has grown exponentially in the last few years. All that’s ag land too. How many of those residents are actually farming? Some? A few? As long as the LUC pretends everything fine, why have such a thing as ag zoning in the first place? Anthony Pignataro fears he’s the only one who misses Heather Graham’s one-episode sit-com Emily’s Reasons Why Not. MTW

WOULD YOU PAY A 281% INTEREST RATE? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED AT THE ANSWER. When you’re promised a tax refund in 48 hours, it’s not a refund, it’s a loan. If you’re expecting $2000, and you pay a $200 fee to have it in 48 hours, you’re paying an effective rate of 281% to receive it 13 days sooner than you otherwise would. You’re going to be inundated the next few months with ads spouting the virtues of these refunds in hours – don’t believe them. These loans are expensive, often costing more than the return preparation itself. For these reasons we chose not to offer them. We do a lot of other cool things for our clients too.

WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. NOT ALL PRODUCTS EXACTLY AS SHOWN.

“I am proposing a dramatic increase of $132.5 million for K-12 public education, including $90 million in additional funds for school construction and repairs and maintenance. This money is on top of the $570 million already appropriated, but not yet spent by the Department of Education.”

This is a very common political tactic—raise the spectre of a do-nothing government bureaucracy (in this case, the state Department of Education) just sitting around all day, doing nothing with more than half a billion dollars in appropriated funds, then ask the Legislature to drop nearly $100 million more on top of those funds the DOE supposedly isn’t spending. So what that the department insists that it’s spent or is in the process of spending all the money allocated to it—the tactic works because Lingle gets to be both generous benefactor and stern disciplinarian. And they say State of the State addresses have nothing to do with politics… -Anthony Pignataro

THE GREAT STATE OF FLORIDUH

abused by Rader might feel lucky.

Palm Beach County, Fla., created the controversial “butterfly ballot” in the 2000 presidential election that reportedly confused more than a thousand GoreLieberman voters such that they wound up marking their ballots for a minor-party candidate. In February 2006, local education officials told the Palm Beach Post that too many of the county’s high school students apparently knew answers on the statewide comprehensive test but were incorrectly marking the answer sheets. The multiple choice questions require only one circle to be darkened on the sheet, but other questions require darkening digits of an actual numerical answer, apparently bewildering students into darkening too many or too few circles.

Gerard Glock, 39, filed a claim against the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, N.Y., in January to reimburse two months’ wages he lost when he was too traumatized to work. He had been trimming weeds in a cemetery operated by the church when the ground collapsed, and he wound up waist-deep in his brother-in-law’s grave.

A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist, quoting a spokesman for the telecommunications company Lucent in January, reported that “nearly a million people” in the United States still lease their house phones for around $60 a year rather than buy them for as little as $20 each.

INEXPLICABLE The Wichita Eagle reported in January that the BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader (now serving 10 consecutive life sentences), has been sued by a former employee, Mary Capps, for $75,000 because, while she worked for him, he used “abusive, intimidating language and physical gestures” toward her, damaging her career prospects with the Park City, Kan., government. Rader is unlikely ever to have $75,000 in assets, and besides, most people who were only verbally

An exhaustive report in December on CIA operatives who staffed the so-called “rendition” program, secretly transferring suspected terrorists from U.S. custody to foreign governments, revealed sometimes-sloppy undercover work of the agents. In one rendition, in Milan, Italy, covert agents failed to remove their cell phones’ batteries, thus enabling them to be electronically tracked even though the phones were off. Also, one clandestine operative left a clear trail of her whereabouts because, even though she booked herself at foreign hotels under aliases, she insisted that frequent-flier miles earned at the hotels be credited to her personal, non-secret frequent-flier account.

NEW FETISHIST SPECIES Masafumi Natsukawa, 39, was arrested in Yokohama, Japan, in January for allegedly tricking more than 30 young girls to open their mouths on the pretense that he was checking for tooth decay, and when they did, he licked their tongues. And in January, former schoolteacher Michael Codde, 44, was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty in Santa Cruz, Calif., to felony child molestation. The case against Codde consisted mostly of testimony that he put whipped cream on teenage boys’ toes and made them lick it off while he took photos (a practice the judge said that Codde engaged in for sexual arousal). Maui Land & Pine rises a few notches this week because the Maui County Council finally approved its uber-luxurious Kapalua Mauka project. Was there ever any doubt? Well, yeah, there was actually. But the fact that it took this long shows even a well-heeled landowner like MLP can still be slowed by citizen outrage at the promotion of yet another big West Maui project that will tax that region’s already-taxed sewage, water and road infrastructure. And A&B rises a couple rungs on news that semi-retired company man Mercer “Chubby” Vicens has all but anointed his longtime friend Gladys Baisa—recently retired from Maui Economic Opportunity—to the Maui County Council. She still has run first—hell, she hasn’t even pulled papers yet—but she’s pretty much a shoe-in. MTW

By Anthony Pignataro

There’s a scene about a third of the way into Kiana Davenport’s new novel House of Many Gods in which a hundred Native Hawaiian anti-war activists try to protest U.S. military bombings and maneuvers on Oahu’s Wai’anae coast. Led by a partially crippled Vietnam vet named Lopaka, the demonstrators attempt to unfurl huge banners saying “NO MORE MILITARY BOMBING” and “GET OFF OUR SACRED LANDS” while bombs explode in the nearby Makua Valley. The cops who start cracking their heads are Hawaiian, too. “You’re a brother,” the main character Ana asks one of the indifferent cops. “How can you do this?” This Machiavellian pitting of Hawaiian against Hawaiian while American troops practice invasion tactics in the background is a brutal indictment of U.S. rule over Hawai’i— which has always been pretty much been low-key violent from the 1893 overthrow to the present. That the scene takes place in a lush work of romantic fiction is stunning. Complex and unforgiving, tragic and yet still hopeful, House of Many Gods is also one of the sharpest and most articulate arguments yet made against the U.S. military’s running roughshod over Hawai’i. It’s not completely hyperbolic to say

there are a million things going on in Davenport’s novel, her third after the critically acclaimed Shark Dialogues in 1994 and Song of the Exile in 1999. Ostensibly the tale of a fiery Hawaiian woman and her estranged mother, the story has interludes on the conflict between Native Hawaiian culture with western religions, Russian environmental degradation, San Francisco, illegitimate children, cancer, traditional Hawaiian childbirth techniques, 1950’s nuclear testing, crime, Wai’anae poverty, the Moscow Circus, the horrors of a teaching hospital’s emergency room, Vietnam vets who turn against war, anger management and Hurricane ‘Iniki. Any one of those ideas could easily fill House of Many God’s 330 pages. Most are touched on briefly, but running consistently throughout the story is struggle against the American military’s often heavy-handed presence. Davenport’s bitterness at the Pentagon is sometimes as heavy-handed as the Army’s exploding bombs. “These lands are our lands,” Lopaka, lectures an army guard at one point. “You stole them from us. You’re storing nuclear weapons here. You’re testing bombs up the highway at Makua. You think we’re stupid? We don’t know?… You think this is what I fought for? To

watch my homelands blown to bits?” A hapa-haole from Oahu, Davenport is an internationally bestselling novelist. Currently in the middle of a nationwide book tour, on Feb. 19 she signed copies of House of Many Gods at Borders Bookstore in Kahului for dozens of fans. Though a novel, Davenport insists that everything in her book is based on fact. In fact, she says her Oahu cousins have been demonstrating against the military in Makua Valley for years. “Just this week, I was looking at the papers—they want more live fire training,” she told me. “And more landfills. They’re just dumping things out there—where the poorest and least educated Hawaiians live. It just infuriates me. Five percent of the population, but they get 95 percent of the dumpsites. I know we do need to be alert, but Jesus—they’re supposed to be protecting the people. What’s going on in certain areas is not advantageous to the people.” Actually, it’s more than just certain areas. Military weapons training and maneuvers run throughout the Hawaiian Islands. On the Big Island, the U.S. Army wants a huge swath of territory to train crews in using new “Stryker” armored vehicles. The U.S. Navy has a missile test range at Barking Sands, Kauai. The U.S.

Depleted Uranium One of the hotter topics these days concerning military environmental degradation concerns depleted uranium (DU)—the use of ultra-hard, ultra-toxic spent uranium to make armor-piercing rounds. The stuff is all over Iraq—used extensively today and in the first Gulf War—and pops up here and there throughout Hawai’i training areas. This Friday, Feb. 24, Maui Peace Action and the Maui Community College Peace Club are offering a free showing of the film Downwind: Depleted Uranium Weapons in the Age of Virtual War as well as hosting a panel discussion. Speakers include Maui District Health Office Dr. Lorrin Pang, Kaho’olawe Reserve Commission Executive Director Sol Kaho’ohalahala and depleted uranium researcher Karen Chun. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at MCC in Ka Lama 103. For more information, call 573-3255.

Navy’s been gone from Kaho’olawe for a while now, but their presence—in the form of tons of unexploded ordinance— will most likely remain for many decades to come. Shattered bombs and spent depleted uranium bullets litter much of the Hawaiian chain (see the sidebar “Depleted Uranium” on how you can learn more about the toxic effects of this wonder weapon on Hawai’i). Not a new phenomenon. We now know, for example, that in the mid1940’s the U.S. Army dumped tens of thousands of bombs—totalling perhaps 15 million pounds—containing mustard gas and other chemical weapons into the water barely five miles off the Wai’anae Coast. Exactly where all the warheads are, and their present state, remains a mystery. Apparently, military records concerning weapons dumpings are pretty much non-existent, or so the Pentagon claims. In fact, because of recent pressure from Oahu’s U.S. Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D, 1st District) and U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i), the Pentagon is only now studying the long-term health and environmental effects of the gas warhead dumpings. At various times in House of Many Gods, characters talk of nuclear weapons stored in the Makua Valley. The Red Hill ordinance depot on Oahu has also long been a rumored home to worst weapons in the U.S. arsenal. Because of the understandable paranoia that grips the U.S. Government concerning nuclear weapons, the presence of such weapons remains a matter of conjecture. In fact, it’s the stated policy of the U.S. Government—most recently articulated in a Feb. 6, 2006 memo from Deputy Chief of Naval Operations Vice Admiral J. G. Morgan, Jr. (obtained and made by public by the Federation of American Scientists)—that no one in the armed forces is to tell anywhere where we keep our nukes. “It is the policy of the U.S. Government to neither confirm nor deny the presence or absence of nuclear weapons at any general or specific location,” is how any member of the military is to answer any question regarding the alleged storage of nuclear weapons at any U.S. military base. The reason is National Security—we

don’t want our enemies to have any advantage in finding our doomsday weapons. The logic is inescapable. But in the rush to “protect” the American people, health and environmental security for those who live near those weapons ends up getting sacrificed. “Cancer seems to be rampant on the Wainaie Coast, along with respiratory diseases,” Davenport said. Indeed, her novel is filled with gripping instances of people dealing with “da Big C.” For a love story, death is a constant throughout House of Many Gods. Characters come and go, but always in the background, army bombs go off. Indeed, drama seems to ebb and flow, depending on whether the army is training for amphibious warfare. “The book took longer than it should have,” Davenport said, adding that the book went through 24 drafts. “What stopped me cold was 9/11—I lost four friends in that. I was in hospitals looking for them for weeks. I didn’t write for a year. “With all that’s happening in the world, you wonder why you write fiction,” she continued. “Do you know what I mean? Why does anybody bother writing fiction anymore? The world seems so unbelievable.” MTW

Cary and Eddie’s Hideaway I’m voting for the buffet Cary and Eddie’s Hideaway in Kahului has long been a local Maui favorite— especially with politicians. It’s where Councilwoman Charmaine Tavares recently kicked off her mayor campaign. At press time Upcountry council candidate Gladys Baisa was scheduled to hold a fundraising luncheon there on Feb. 23.

Cary & Eddie’s Hideaway 500 N. Pu’unene Ave., Kahului, 873-6555. $ It must be the buffet. Nestled behind First Hawaiian Bank, the restaurant offers a delicious variety of traditional American and Hawaiian foods along with a hearty salad and dessert bar. When the hostess seats you she presents you with a full menu. Of course, those familiar with Cary and Eddie’s are quick to hand it back and make their way to the buffet, which costs $20.99 per person. I’m a fan of starting in the center of the main dining room, at the salad bar. The giant island is divided into two parts. The first holds your traditional salad fixings, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, etc. The other has a variety of prepared salads like potato, pasta, three-bean and cole slaw. While I enjoy a few greens before my main course, those of you who hate eating their vegetables will be happy to hear the buffet always includes beanless chili and a soup du jour. Once you’re done with your first

course or if you just can’t wait to dig into the real food, be prepared to make some difficult decisions. Cary and Eddie’s offers so many main courses you’ll have to make more than one trip. To the right of the salad bar there’s a table stocked with American food: on the other side, Hawaiian specialties. The American is mostly stocked with barbecue favorites. Meat-wise you can choose from incredibly tender ribs, barbecued chicken, catch of the day and a local main entrée like ham hock stew. There’s also a vegetable du jour and paniolo baked beans. When I ate at Cary and Eddie’s last week, they also offered a delicious spicy seafood dish loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops. The seafood was tender and the broth reminiscent of an herby bouillabaisse. On the Hawaiian side of the buffet, the kalua pig and cabbage is dynamite. The cabbage is soft but still crunchy and the pork pieces fall apart in your mouth. The beef luau also has a perfect combination of greens and tender meat chunks. The teriyaki chicken tastes similar to the barbecued variety. Both of which are drenched in a mouth watering sauce that’s maple-sweet but still tangy. If you haven’t had enough or you’re still looking for more to try, you can help yourself to chicken lau lau, chicken long rice, or poi and lomi lomi. They also offer a full menu with salads, prime rib, sandwiches and king crab legs, but really, you want the buffet. Political candidates come and go, but the buffet never disappoints. MTW

Thar She Blows! Saturday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m across the Maui shoreline [ECO] Every year the Pacific Whale Foundation does a Great Whale Count to find out how many whales are lollygagging in Hawaiian waters. Anybody can do this, though it does require getting up before 8 a.m. on a Saturday and then standing on a beach at one of the 13 official “counting stations” and staring out over the ocean. Then, for the next few hours, you get to say things like “There’s one” and “There’s another one” while, someone presumably records this information in an official Great Whale Count ledger. What’s not to like? To volunteer, call 249-8811. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Do the Hustle? Thursday, Feb. 23, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater [DANCE] No… Seriously, though, the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble (pictured left) is about more than the beautiful movement and elaborate costumes of the classical dance of India. It’s a way of life for dedicated dancers who undergo intensive training, as well as schooling in Indian literature, mythology, poetry, Sanskrit, music, aesthetics, history of dance, philosophy, spiritual thought and dance theory. They’re also trained in martial arts, yoga, mime, meditation and sculpture. They believe in self-sufficiency, the inter-relatedness of all arts and physical traditions, and evoking a “feminine spirituality for a contemporary exploration of the identity of women.” And The New York Times calls it, “a modern devotion to a sacred Indian ritual.” Yeah… kinda hard to make any smarmy comments about that, isn’t it? Tickets: $10, $20, $35, half price for keiki 12 and under. Call 242-7469.

Ulua Thursday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m., McCoy Studio Theater, MACC [STAGE/MUSICAL COMEDY] All new! All Hawaiian! The story is about a boy from Oahu who moves to Maui in search of the meaning of life. Whoa. That’s why I moved here, too! I sure hope he finds it. Then maybe I can figure it out as well. My friend assures me that the meaning of life can be found stuck to the bottom of a barstool by some gum, but I’ve seen the underside of many a barstool on this island and I have yet to find it. Is it possible that the answers to life’s biggest questions are out there in nature? Or within one’s self? We’ll just have to watch and find out. Tickets: $20. Call 242-7469. [HEIDI KING]

Playing Outdoors Saturday, 6 p.m. at MCC [DRIVE-IN MOVIES] This week, March of the Penguins is making its “outdoor Maui” premiere, which is appropriate considering our near-arctic temperatures as of late (what is it now, like, 70 degrees?! Brrr…). But let this be the time to cuddle up with your woman, man or dog, as you witness the tuxedoed birds’ quest to find the perfect mate and start a family, “a journey that will take them hundreds of miles across the continent by foot, in freezing cold temperatures, in brittle, icy winds and through deep, treacherous waters.” Hunh. Can’t be any worse than trying to find love at Tsunami’s every weekend, right? Then it’s on to Fishbowl (pictured below) a local film from the same director of Picture Bride and based on the novel Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers, about an awkward teen girl, her fickle best friend and the evil popular girl. And wrapping it up for the evening is Wahine O Ke Kai, a film about Donna Kahi Kahakui, who paddled from Oahu to Kaua’i to Lehua to Ni’ihau—nearly 200 miles—in a matter of days, in 2004. Admission: $5 per person, $20 per car, keiki FREE. Call 573-5530.

DAY

First Descent Friday, 5 & 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater [FILM] Five of the best boarders today go balls deep with no wires, no stunt doubles and no special effects. Who races an avalanche down a mountain? Seriously gnar gnar peeps, that’s who. The documentary discusses the snow boarding movement and shows some sweet footage of boarders throughout the years as well as the super intense voyage down a mountain in Alaska that no one had ridden up to until the movie was made. Not like a bunny slope, or even the advanced runs. It’s more like skate boarding down Haleakala with no road… and add snow... and no wheels. In other words, attempted suicide. It’s intense. Tickets: $10. Call 242-7469. [HEIDI KING]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

I said emote, dammit!

Old School Religion Tyler Perry smacks some sense up Tyler Perry’s movies are surprisingly liberating in light of their seriously preachy nature. The visionary playwright/screenwriter/director/actor returns after the enormous success of Diary Of A Mad Black Woman as 68year-old Southern matriarch Grandma Mabel “Madea” Simmons in a homespun story set in Georgia where Madea restores some semblance of self-respect to her diverse family at their family reunion.

Madea’s Family Reunion

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/107 mins.

Domestic violence, incest and greed are some of the issues that boil over in this sweet and sour comedy that adheres to theatrical guidelines that are seldom politically correct. A lively R&B soundtrack and impressive cameo performances by Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou invigorate the finely drawn burlesque. Madea’s troubled nieces Lisa (Rochelle Aytes—White Chicks) and Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) carry the scars of abusive childhoods that haunt them in their daily lives. Lisa is engaged to Carlos (Blair Underwood—Rules Of Engagement) a wealthy banking consultant incapable of controlling his temper toward her. The movie opens to the strains of Ray Charles’ “Georgia On My Mind” while a helicopter shot of the city of Georgia zooms in on an idyllic penthouse apartment where Lisa is led by her fiancé to a palatial bathtub filled with rose petals while live violinists play. The serene circumstance is shattered when we realize that this is Carlos’ juvenile way

FILM

of overcompensating for the physical abuse he levied against Lisa the night before. Lisa’s half-sister Vanessa is a protective single mother living in fear of ever again entering into an intimate relationship with a man even though her kindly public bus driver Brian (Boris Kadjoe) is constantly trying to arrange a date. Victoria (Lynn Whitfield) is the maternal common denominator between the two young women, and the untold behind-the-scenes reason for much of her daughters’ grief. Victoria has quietly been meeting with Carlos to insure her daughter’s marriage into the upper class echelon that will satisfy her own bourgeoisie desires. The eloquent synergy that Perry sets up between these two very authentic women (Lisa and Vanessa) against their unspeakably cruel mother is beautifully offset by the comic antics that Madea practices with her every breath. Madea’s motto, “Remember that life is sometimes hard, and you have to laugh your way through it,” comes across even without the line ever being spoken in the movie. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion is part of a body of work that cuts across class prejudices with a joke-ridden air of nostalgia for a time yet to come where dignity and respect are thoroughly integrated into American society from the bottom to the top. Although the movie is an unapologetic rally for family values, wisdom and spirituality, the tone is never condescending, patronizing or tame. Perry is a retro-futurist with a natural knack for making audiences laugh. When he’s onscreen, in drag as Madea saying “Hallelujah” or in old-age make-up as the flatulent Uncle Joe, Perry is infectiously charismatic and hilarious in the same wise way that Groucho Marx was in his movies. There’s a magic here that points to the power of the human spirit to overcome personal, social and political oppression. It’s a good example of social satire. MTW

with the blind hatred of society over a span of like 20 years. 134 min. (HK)

5 & 7:30 P.M., CASTLE THEATER FIRST DESCENT - (PG13) - Documentary - Hardcore snow boarders try to stay ahead of an Alaskan avalanche. (See ”This Week’s Picks,” p. 19) 111 min.

New This Week DOOGAL - (G) - Animation - Based on a U.K. children’s series. A variety of animals, the leader being a dog, go on a dangerous voyage to save the world from falling into the hands of the evil wizard, ZeeBadee. Famous voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Chevy Chase, Kylie Minogue, Kevin Smith & Jon Stewart. 81 min. (Heidi King) MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION - (PG13) Comedy, Drama - Tyler Perry is back with Grandma Madea in another follow-up that started with Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The whole family is having issues from weddings to children to abusive lovers. You know she’s gonna lay the smack down. 107 min. (HK) MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS - (R) Comedy, Drama - When Mrs. Henderson is widowed, she discovers that she owns an old abandoned theater. After fixing it up, the community is shocked to find that she plans on having the girls in the show perform nude. But, hey, sex sells. 102 min. (HK) RUNNING SCARED - (R) - Crime, Drama - Paul Walker plays Joey Gazelle (have you known many Gazelles in your life? I sure haven’t) in this new mob thriller directed by Wayne Kramer. Long story short, Gazelle is a low-level mob guy who ends up pissing off his bosses, who then threaten Gazelle’s family. Big surprise there! Also stars Cameron Bright. 119 min. (Anthony Pignataro) TRANSAMERICA - (R) - Comedy, Drama - A conservative transsexual woman finds out she produced a son when she was a male. They meet and end up having to take a road trip together. Felicity Huffman stars. 103 min. (HK)

MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX

CURIOUS GEORGE - (G) - Animation, Family - How cute is this; Jack Johnson does all of the songs and Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke are the main voices. As if the little monkey needed any help getting cuter. That is just frickin’ precious. Oh yeah, you know who Curious George is, right? The monkey that gets in trouble all of the time. Think back, you grew up on this stuff. 82 min. (HK) DATE MOVIE - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance - Two of the writers for “Scary Movie” put this one together. It looks hilarious and usually spoof movies don’t impress me. I guess you can’t really go wrong with making fun of relationships and the games we play. 83 min. (HK) EIGHT BELOW - (Unrated) - Action, Adventure - Paul Walker stars in this new Disney movie about sled dogs. It takes place in Antarctica where a series of events leads to eight sled dogs being stuck out in a storm. Based on an article in National Geographic. Unfortunately, it’s cold weather, so Walker will probably be keeping all of his clothes on. (HK) FINAL DESTINATION 3 - (R) - Thriller, Horror Follows the same story line as the first two. High school girl predicts a tragic roller coaster accident, it happens. The people she convinced to not ride the ride now have to try and cheat death. 92 min. (HK) FIREWALL - (R) - Action, Thriller - Harrison Ford stars as the loving husband and father that just happens to work at a huge bank and be the software creator. Paul Bettany plays the villan that kidnaps Ford’s family in order to rob the bank. Although we’ve seen the basic story before, it looks like a good one. 100 min. (HK) FREEDOMLAND - (R) - Drama - Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore star in this new thriller about a woman who gets car-jacked with her 4 year old son still inside. But the case keeps getting creepier as we find out the boy may be lost in the old abandoned child asylum. What is really going on here? 113 min. (HK)

ANNAPOLIS - (PG-13) - Drama - Ever see Richard Gere and Lou Gossett, Jr. in An Officer and a Gentleman? Cool, then you don’t have to see this rip-off, about a young bad boy (James Franco) who tries to find out if he measures up at the U.S. Naval Academy. 108 min. (AP)

HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family - Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. It looks cute. 81 min. (HK)

BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE 2 - (PG13) - Comedy Martin Lawrence is back wearing the fat suit, once again needing to go deep undercover for the F.B.I. Isn’t it amazing how all a man needs to do is dress up like a woman in the movies, and all of a sudden he can run faster than a speeding bullet, leap over buildings in a single bound and kick just about anyone’s ass? Incredible. 99 min. (HK)

THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama Queen Latifah plays a quiet and reserved woman who, upon a visit to the doctor, thinks she only has three weeks to live. This news pushes her to take risks she normally wouldn’t. Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK)

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama, Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? See how they deal

Castle Theater, 572-3456 First Descent - (PG13) - Fr 5, 7:30

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) - ActionAdventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch)

MATCH POINT - (R) - Drama, Thriller - A guy (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) marries a lovely young lady (Emily Mortimer) who happens to come from a filthy rich family. Everything is picturesque...until he meets and becomes enchanted by another woman (Scarlett Johansson). Then the scandolous activity begins. I can’t tell if this one is going to be like Fatal Attraction or

Your earring is caught on my lip something more original. Written and directed by Woody Allen. 124 min. (HK) NANNY MCPHEE - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Think ugly Mary Poppins, except with Emma Thompson in the lead role. Pretty routine stuff, really—nanny checks in, uses magic to tame naughty brats—but Thompson is also one of the screenwriters, so there might be something to it. Also stars Colin Firth. 88 min. (AP) THE NEW WORLD - PG13 - Adventure, Drama - One of the most famous romances of all time, John Smith and Pocahontas. I highly doubt Smith was as hot as Colin Farrell though. You all know the story, I just hope that it’s more historically correct than the Disney version. 150 min. (HK) PINK PANTHER - PG - Comedy - Steve Martin plays well-to-do Inspector Clouseau. The Pink Panther is an amazing diamond that has been stolen and the Inspector, through “unintentional” slapstick comedy and dumb luck, is trying to catch the culprit. Don’t forget about his hilarious accent. 92 min. (HK) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - Action-Horror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampy-vixen Selene, the vampire heroine who realized in the prequel she was fighting against the wrong evil. But with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) at her side, they battle against this ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Oh, the agony! The heartache! The torture of being a vam—I mean lyca—er...hmm. 106 min. (Tallia Monterroso) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS - PG13 - Horror, Thriller - Remake of the 1979 movie that spawned one of my favorite urban legends. A babysitter keeps getting creepy calls, repeatedly being asked if she’s checked the children. Normally I wouldn’t put any expectations on a horror movie with a piddly little PG13 rating, but this one actually looks pretty freaky. (HK)

Bassnectar So Sweet ‘Vegan’ deejay delivers bass lines that mesmerize He’s not just another killer deejay. The music of Lorin Ashton, a.k.a. Bassnectar, is rooted in a deeply textured, low frequency bass vibration that makes speakers crackle and gasp. When he performs, he bounces to the rhythm and flips his long hair around in a rockstar dance style as distinctive as the “Bassnectar whomp” of his signature sound.

DJ Bassnectar Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s. Tickets: $10-15. His thick, chunky beats wobble, bounce, squelch and reverberate with a funky syncopated rhythm that propels you deep into the chambers of the groove. He prides himself on creating healthy “vegan music”— remixing existing tracks but removing all the cheesy vocals and fatty lyrics. Bassnectar opts instead to expand his fans’ social awareness by mixing in intelligent and provocative vocal samples from political activists Saul Williams, Noam Chomsky and Mumia Abu Jamal. These unexpectedly interspersed sound bites inspire listeners to take action against the many injustices within our current political regime. But he’s also a master wordsmith. His creatively titled tracks—“The Wicked Twitch of the West,” “Force of Suction” and “Inspire the Empathetic,” for example—are designed to arrest the attention and intrigue the mind. His semi-frequent news updates on his bassnectar.net site, and his postings on tribe.net and myspace.com, are enlightening and further showcase his wordskilletry and verbal flexibility. Bassnectar has been creating music since he was 12 years old. And after more than a decade of studio production and remixing, his list of collaborators reads

like a “best of electronica” lineup, including Sound Tribe Sector 9, Spearhead, String Cheese Incident, Cheb I Sabbah, Bucket Head, Karsh Kale, HDC & KRS One, FreQ Nasty, Landslide, Crash Berlin and Perry Farrell. His latest production, Mesmerizing the Ultra, is a double disc that will captivate your conscience with deep beats and powerful political messages. Disc one contains 18 previously unreleased original Bassnectar tracks, while the second disc is a selection of re-mastered tracks from the Bassnectar Labs, including a bonus song featuring HDC & KRS One. Throughout both discs, Bassnectar delivers a satisfying dose of innovative electronic music that appeals to all beat-loving junkies. Lorin’s earlier CD releases, Diverse Systems of Throb and Motions of Mutation, were clever, well-designed albums that became instant underground classics. But the September release of Mesemerizing the Ultra broadened the spectrum of Bassnectar fans. Distribution by Fontana Universal is bringing mainstream recognition to Lorin’s label Amorphous Music, a subsidiary of Organic Music. In late October 2005, the new double disc topped the charts as best-selling electronic music at popular San Francisco retailer Amoeba Records. This marks a new era in the age of Bassnectar, in which his seductive bass lines meet ears both virgin and veteran, by way of big-name retailers like Amazon.com, Borders, Virgin Music, Tower Records and iTunes. Coining coveted electronic music descriptors like, “throbbing grinding breakbeats, dreamy melodic downtempo, and heavy churning hip-hop,” it’s no small wonder the Bassnectar sound has a global fan club and a devoted tribe of “bassnymphos.” For more info on joining the Bassnectar revolution, visit www.bassnectar.net. As much as you’d love to just wipe the slate clean and start over, your repeated attempts to do so simply aren’t likely to succeed at the moment. Sometimes there’s no use in trying to force things. They require time and nothing else—no amount of herculean effort or passionate desire—will do. Give them that time. Everything changes, eventually. Sometimes you can influence how and how fast things transform, and sometimes you just have to wait for an opening. Be patient, my dear. It might not happen exactly when and how you wish it would but it will, ultimately, all work out.

“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) A classic Aries mistake is to take on too much. You generate a magnificent game plan and instead of breaking it up into manageable chunks, you attempt to make it all happen at once. Despite your tremendous vigor and determination, this almost always results in disaster, because the next time your energy wanes, you become overwhelmed by the enormity of what you’ve taken on. Your strategy for self-improvement is like a nine-course meal. You’ve got to pace yourself and tackle it in bite-sized pieces. Chew and swallow one at a time. It may take you longer than you wished to get to dessert but at least you’ll get there (without choking).

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Now is not the time to indulge in one of your favorite activities: wallowing in nostalgia. But touching base with the sweeter moments of your past could be useful, as you have the chance to create a number of delicious, vivid memories this week (the kind you’d wallow in later in life). Try to remember the best times of your life, if only to recall why they were the best times. You can’t recreate your youth and you shouldn’t try. But some (and only some) of the habits of those good times could be reinvented now, with amazing results. Don’t waste time thinking your best years are behind you. Consider it a challenge to somehow make this one (and every one) better than the last. It’s all about unbridled generosity, about lavishing those you love (and even some of those you don’t) with all the blessings you have it in your power to dispense. You have many faults, Leo; this you know. Unfortunately, some people have been noticing the crap sides of you much more than the sweet ones. Maybe you have been a bit selfish? Make up for it now by giving, without thought of what you’ll get back, without self-doubt, without investing it in meaning either way. Remember that giving to others is quite a nice thing to do—and the fewer strings attached to your offerings, the nicer it is.

Sorry, darling. You’re fun to play jokes on. We don’t mean you to suffer, really, and if we thought our mischief would actually hurt you, we wouldn’t go there. It’s just that your reactions are so entertaining, your good sportsmanship exemplary; and your pragmatically forgiving nature ensures there won’t be long-term repercussions to a silly prank. However, despite your sweetness I suspect the thought of revenge occasionally crosses your mind. I hope you don’t take this notion too seriously, but if you can deliver it as lightheartedly as the original offenses (which were never especially mean-spirited) then this week is a good time to dispense your vengeance.

Because you’ve had so much practice, you’re awfully good at living with regret. Woulda, coulda, shoulda— these words occur way too often in your personal soundtrack. Yeah, you’ve screwed up, at times, and because you’re a Scorpio, those mistakes have occasionally been huge. And even though you rationally accept that there’s nothing to be done but move on, it’s often awfully hard for you to do so. This week, however, you should get a good solid boost in that direction—if you choose to run with it, you could travel so far down the road away from your screw-up that you can’t even see it, let alone spend hours reliving it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Your personal PR isn’t inaccurate; it’s simply optimistic. It pertains to only the best parts of you—sort of the you that’d exist, full-time, if you’d never been hurt, damaged, or suffered self-doubt. You’re lucky; your best self makes frequent appearances. Inevitably, though, you eventually get bogged down. This is when you get into trouble. Because you initially put on your best face, some people feel betrayed when the less-than-perfect reality shows up. This week, try a new strategy: modesty. Downplay your greatness. That way, when reality doesn’t match your advertising, it won’t matter, because people will be surprised and impressed, not disappointed.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Sweetheart, we just want an in. Sometimes the very thing we found attractive at first—your inscrutability, for instance—is exactly what keeps us from acting on that attraction; we just don’t know how. Help us out, Capricorn. Spill your guts. These are not the kinds of secrets that serve you well; indeed, it’s in your best interest that they become common knowledge—everyone will be happier that way. Give me some clues, too, if you please (Caeriel@yahoo.com), regarding how to seduce one of you emotional weirdos. I’ll pass them along, as a public service, to all those who might be interested.

I wish I could be as cool as you. I don’t mean that facetiously; I’m often subject to embarrassing lapses when my emotionality gets the best of me; I’ve rarely, if ever, witnessed anything like that happening to you. If you ever allow your feelings to rage out of control, you must do it in private, where no one else can see. Although this has surely often been useful—it won’t be this week. See, some people are (desperately) looking for signs of emotion. Whether you feel the way they hope you do, or not, giving them that rare glimpse of your internal workings will not only avoid lots of trouble and needless drama—it’s likely to be an unexpected win-win.

NEWS

Geminis are prone to caffeine addiction. Most of you hate to begin your day without a cup of joe. We know the story: at first it’s a performance enhancer but eventually it’s simply a performance maintainer—you can’t function without it. Constantly running this kind of energy deficit isn’t healthy. Now, we both know asking you to give up your java, mate, tea or cola is a ridiculous proposition. But changing your relationship to it isn’t so much to ask. Assess how often you consume the stuff because you “need’ it, and how often simply out of boredom or habit. I suspect you’ll find areas where you could (and probably should, admit it) significantly cut down. If you agree, heed me: this is a good week to try.

Bonsai trees are genetically no different than the full-size trees in the park. They’ve just been trimmed and trained to limit their growth so that they develop into the attractively stunted form that’s their defining characteristic. Humans aren’t quite so malleable; nevertheless, there are those who’d limit your access to the things that will help you grow. These people have their own specific agendas, but generally the idea is to maintain the status quo. They might even believe it’s for your own good. However, I find the idea of keeping you limited and safe repugnant. Don’t you? Break out of the tiny pot that’s keeping your roots short and shallow, and get out of the shade. It’s time to grow—whether those around you like it, or not.

Room to Move

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

This search for what you want is like tracking something that doesn’t want to be tracked. It takes time to get a dance right, to create something memorable. – Fred Astaire

We DO IT Because IT FEELS GOOD!

Monkey Spankers

Lightbulb moments happen at the oddest times. Do you know what I’m talking about? That instant, nearly spiritual spark of mental cognizance—like a mini-revelation—and you can practically see the light bulb over your head, just floating there and suddenly shining brightly, like in the old Bugs Bunny or Popeye cartoons. Sometimes certain events happen in your life or you face a sort of incoherent malaise that forces you to ask, “What the hell am I doing?” or “Why am I doing this?” And so, for me, I’ve been in this sort of questioning fog lately and yet still going about my business, doing the day-to-day operations, the procrastinating, the eating of lavish meals and drinking of the finest wines, the paying of the bills, the having of the amazing sex, blah blah blah, when it hit me. It was something David Ward said to me a couple weeks ago, as I was interviewing him for a possible story. Ward is this revered dancer-choreographer who, for the past 20 years, has elevated modern dance in the Hawaiian Islands and brought an unprecedented vitality to the performing arts scene at large, and especially in regards to state funding. He also teaches dance at Seabury Hall. But anyway, for the past six months, he’d been intensely working on his big choreographic swan-songy retrospective called, “Dancing Through Life” (Feb. 17, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center). Naturally, we talked about the importance of dance—how it’s used as a means of storytelling in many different cultures, how aesthetically pleasing it is to see the human body in all its various forms of movement, how if everyone did more of it, we’d be healthier people. I enjoyed talking with Ward. He was dynamic and accessible, warm, wise, funny and supremely youthful. But honestly, I didn’t know what to expect at his big dance performance. My grandmother used to take me to the ballet when I was younger but nowadays, the extent of my knowledge has more to do with hip hop’s b-boy battles or jokingly making modern dance “jazz hands” for dramatic measure when goofing off with friends. On the night of the show, the Castle Theater was packed with beaming folks busily not making jazz hands. You could tell these people had seen a Ward show or three in their time, and were anxious to see more. The curtain rose to reveal a dream-like set, with a large canopied bed covered in scarlet ribbons, and a backdrop of video-ed images, signifying Ward’s imagination as a child and early artistic influences, including clips from Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. On stage, dancers seem to pour out from all around, on top and under the bed frame, flowing like the diaphanous crimson strips that adorned it. This first segment set the scene for a highly varied body of Ward’s work that included an ode to early American folk music and the homeless epidemic, a celebration of the beauty of Middle Eastern culture, a tribute to Paul Robeson and his songs of slavery, a phenomenal tongue-in-cheek tango presentation, and a beautifully tender piece that paid respect to the elders of our society. The dancing was phenomenal, but what most surprised me was the sentiment, and how purely emotional dance—primal movement, non-verbal communication, body language, jazz hands or no—can be. I cried. So what? It was touching shit. The deeply effective finale featured Ward and his main dancers in energetic numbers to David Byrne’s “Don’t Fence Me In” and Judy Garland’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” The closing segment of this finale had Ward back in bed, sleeping, set against a retrospective video montage, with his dancers assuming seemingly haphazard positions around the four-poster canopy. Ward then rose from bed, stretched his arms over his head and grinned. At the end, the crowd was still beaming, albeit with dewy eyes, as they gave Ward and his troupes an enthusiastic standing ovation. Taking his final bow on the edge of the stage, lei’d, flushed and sweaty, with tears streaming down his cheeks, he looked so genuinely happy. And I thought about the last thing Ward said to me in our interview the week prior—and the moment when my introspective fog momentarily lifted. I’d asked him, “What are you going to do now?” And he said, “I don’t know. That’s what I’m so excited about, again—the thrill of possibilities.” Samantha Campos was the pre-J-Lo “Fly Girl” stand-in for the popular variety/comedy show In Living Color, first season, episode six.
