The Run to the Sun Why people run from Kahului to Haleakala

Tabled Discussion

The Run to the Sun began in 1977 as a personal challenge between two teachers and a former student. Dipping their feet in the ocean at Kanaha Beach before the sunrise, Maui High cross country coach David Sakugawa, Haiku School teacher Bill Carroll and Steve Sobaje began their jog to the summit of Haleakala. “We just wanted to see if we could run to the top of the mountain,” says Sobaje. With Bill’s daughter Ann providing water and food in an escort vehicle, the three made it to the summit in less than seven hours.

The Run to the Sun

Sat., March 25, 4:30 a.m. Runners begin at the Maui Mall, in Kahului. For more information, call 871-6441 or visit www.virr.com. It wasn’t their intention at the time, but these marathoners and Valley Isle Road Runners members ended up founding a challenging uphill race that continues to this day. In fact, Sobaje still holds the best time finishing the race: four hours and 45 minutes, which he ran in 1987. “Starting at sea level and ascending to 10,000 feet, it’s the only race like it in the world,” says race director Bram Denhaan. Presented by Valley Isle Road Runners and Hawaiian Ultra Running Team, the 36-mile ultra marathon course starts at the Maui Mall and climbs to the 10,023foot summit of Haleakala. With thighs and calves as defined as their determination to make it up the mountain, participants are not novice marathoners. Endurance is key.

“We get extreme types from all over the world come and run this race,” says Denhaan. Extreme is a nice way of saying that many of the runners are as unique as the racecourse. Running barefoot and taking smoke breaks throughout, Kawika Spaulding of Hawai’i would crack open a beer or two after he crossed the finish line. “One year, when he finished our race, he put on his tennis shoes and took off into the crater,” says Denhaan. Then there’s Cow Man. “Cow Man had two sets of bull horns he would wear while running,” says Sobaje, “One for training and one for racing.” One year after finishing the race, Cow Man shocked race

organizers when he decided to run back down the mountain. Then there is Stephen Ley from Honolulu who loves the Run to the Sun so much, he tattooed the entire RTS logo on his chest. Every time he finishes, he tattoos another running man petroglyph on his arm. This endurance run tends to attract an older crowd—the average participant age runs between 30 and 40. There are many 50 and 60-year old runners. “It’s a race against yourself, a personal challenge,” says Denhaan, who believes the younger crowd is more attracted to a fasterpaced, more competitive race. The average finishing time of this competition runs between seven and nine hours, with a strict 10-hour time limit. Now in his fifth year as director, Denhaan—a full-time firefighter in Kahului— will step down at the end of this year’s race. He plans on running this year and hopes to beat his best time of seven hours and 40 minutes. Denhaan expects 70 individual runners and 10 teams of three to join him in the race up the mountain. Despite its popularity, the Run to the Sun has never made a profit for its organizers. In fact, it barely breaks even. With 109 volunteers and 21 aid stations, as well as police, ambulances and nurses, the event is truly a labor of love. There are no prizes except the reward that comes from pushing yourself past personal doubt and perceived limits until you reach the summit and its cloud-shrouded silence. MTW

The Liquor Control Board of Adjudication is one step closer to getting a table for their hearing room that doesn’t make it seem to licensees responding to charges against them that the LC staff and prosecutor are part of the actual nine-member panel that will render judgment. Who knows if they’ll actually get that table, but they are one step closer. Spurred by now-ex-Board Member Lance Collins, the table matter came up during the Feb. 9, 2006 Liquor Commission hearing. The issue before the five commissioners who bothered to show up that day was whether to accept Collins’ request for an official rule change and ask for a public hearing on the issue or reject the whole thing outright. The hearing minutes show that, at first, Commissioners Blake Takayama and Manuel Moniz, Jr. seemed to have no idea what Collins wanted. After Collins methodically explained to them that the Adjudication Board weighs all evidence presented to it and not merely LC staff reports—and that he wasn’t asking the LC staff to leave the room but just sit away from the board—they seemed to figure it out. But they still weren’t convinced. “To me is if [sic] the respondent did his homework with his attorney and his investigation, and he has a solid case, so to speak, to me, it shouldn’t be no fear [sic],” Takayama said, according the minutes. “It shouldn’t be no fear [sic] who sits there… You know, so, I do see your point, but I kinda don’t agree with the Department not being involved, which I think they should be, because, you know, we are basing a lot of stuff from their reports and their investigators.” Having no idea what to do with Collins’ requested rule chance— which the commission actually failed to address within 30 days of receipt, as required by its rules—it toyed with simply rejecting the whole thing. Then LC Director Franklyn Silva suggested they agree to hold a hearing on the issue at the same time they’re going to address other proposed liquor rule changes—whenever that will be. The commissioners happily and immediately agreed. “You know, in this case I think it’s a good recommendation,” Silva told the commissioners. “[O]ur main concern is being fair to the licensees, being fair to whoever comes before either the Commission or the Board.”

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15 People often tell me that Maui politics are completely different from the mainland, and it’s easy to see that when you come across something like Mayor Alan Arakawa’s proposed 2007 county budget, which he presented publicly for the first time today. Now we all know Arakawa’s a Republican, so it comes as no surprise that his budget offers a bunch of tax cuts. What’s a Republican without tax cuts? Anyway, Arakawa wants property taxes—no joke on an island where real estate values are boiling over—slashed a whopping 39 percent. But get this—unlike Republicans in, say, Washington, D.C., Arakawa says his tax cuts are possible because of the expected budget surplus. Surplus?! What happened to George W. Bush’s cut-taxes-when-times-are-good/cuttaxes-when-times-are-bad philosophy? And what’s the deal with Arakawa’s budget being 20 percent bigger than last year’s? He’s got millions in new spending packed in there—community centers, fire stations, civic centers, road extensions—even possible Upcountry bus service, which we first told you about last week (see “Missing the Bus,” March 16, 2006). Cutting taxes because of a budget surplus and increasing spending on badly needed community projects—some Republican Arakawa is.

THURSDAY, MARCH 16 The County Council gets to spend the next two months thrashing out Arakawa’s budget numbers, and I think there’s no question it’ll go smoothly. I mean, so what that two council members—Charmaine Tavares and Dain Kane—will be actively campaigning for Arakawa’s job? So what that Riki

Hokama is still relatively new in his position as council chairman, and still feeling out his power relative to the mayor’s office? And so what that, for the Democratic Party as a whole, 2006 has extremely high stakes where the U.S. Congress is concerned? Everybody loves budget discussions—in fact, Tavares has already pretty much thrown in the towel—and she’s running against Arakawa for mayor. “I agree with the mayor,” she’s quoted as saying in today’s Maui News. “[W]hen we have good times, we should use those funds to invest.” Seriously, though—someone really ought to sit Tavares down and explain to her that if she agrees too much with the incumbent during an election campaign, people might start asking why she’s running in the first place.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

FRIDAY, MARCH 17 Well, looks like yet another whale got plowed by some boat. For those of you at home keeping score, boats have so far struck five whales this season in Maui waters. One of those boats even belonged to the Pacific Whale Foundation. Apparently, one of its whale watching boats hit a whale that it apparently wasn’t watching close enough. Anyway, the score stands at five for human race, zero for the whale race or species or society or whatever they are.

MONDAY, MARCH 20

SATURDAY, MARCH 18 So I’m hanging out at a Westside establishment with a buddy of mine (yes, we were drinking—no, we weren’t drunk) and the old Ray Parker, Jr. song “Ghostbusters” starts playing. He and I are carrying on about college basketball, the flooding on Kauai, how President Bush’s longtime domestic policy adviser just got arrested for repeated refund fraud at Target (go ahead and look it up!) or something like that when it hits me— “Ghostbusters” is an anti-lynching song. Hold on—hear me out on this one. If I recall the

to worry about dams breaking the way they did on Kauai. Hmm, could it be because it’s pretty much only rained hard one day (that would be yesterday) in the last six months? That being said, the Honolulu Advertiser recently published a list of “high hazard” dams, and four of them are on our lovely island. And guess what? They’re all old earthen dams that date to the sugar plantation days. According to today’s Maui News, there’s one in Wahikuli of indeterminate ownership, two in Pu’ukoli’i that belong to the Ka’anapali Development Corporation and one in Paia that belongs to Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar. Officials with both companies say they dutifully inspect their dams all the time, though one of the Ka’anapali dams is empty right now. As far as the story with that fourth dam—the Wahikuli one that no one seems to own—the story didn’t say when (if?) that one gets inspected.

lyrics correctly, and I like to think that I do, the song starts off with “If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood/Who ya gonna call? (Ghostbusters).” What’s stranger in your neighborhood than a bunch of Ku Klux Klansmen running around terrorizing people? Dressed in white sheets, wouldn’t they bear at least a passing resemblance to ghosts? And remember the old Ghostbusters logo with the ghost? You look carefully at that ghost, and it’s suddenly pretty obvious that it’s a guy wearing a sheet. I’m telling you, the whole thing is about “busting” the Klan, people! And no, I wasn’t high, either.

As if we don’t have enough to worry about right now—dams breaking all over the place, whales getting whacked, everybody and his uncle running for mayor—the Honolulu Advertiser tells us that Bird Flu is on its way, perhaps arriving “on the wings of a Pacific golden plover or some other migratory bird returning from arctic nesting grounds.” Looks like we’re doing another SARS scare, like the one that proved so much fun back in 2003, except this time we really could all die. At this point the disease is still only transmissible from bird to animal, so as long as we don’t eat any infected animal or play catch with its severed head, we should be good to go.

TUESDAY, MARCH 21

SUNDAY, MARCH 19

The war on whales apparently taking care of itself, we can now safely turn our attention to smokers. According to the Associated Press, there’s a bill moving through the state House right now that would make it illegal to smoke in bars, airports, bowling alleys, art galleries, enclosed portions of stadiums and coin-op laundries. Coin-op laundries! Man, that’s harsh.

So state Department of Land and Natural Resources Director Peter Young says there’s need for people on Maui

Anthony Pignataro has been eating food off and on for the last 33 years. MTW

It’s taken nine weeks, but Maui Land & Pineapple has finally clawed its way back into the top slot. It’s really awe-inspiring when The Maui News does a story on pesticide-contaminated wells and never mentions the name of the company responsible for putting the junk in the water in the first place, but that’s what happened on March 16 when Reporter Harry Eagar detailed how the County Council Water Resources Committee voted unanimously to tell the Department of Water Supply not to use treated water from two contaminated Hamakuapoko wells in Paia, Haiku and Sprecklesville. It was, of course, MLP who sprayed the pesticide DBCP all over the island in the 1970s and 1980s, and it’s MLP that has to help pay for DBCP cleanup as part of a 1999 lawsuit settlement. MTW

“I find that the dangerous conditions of certain reservoirs in the State of Hawai’i and erosion, and fear of failure in certain reservoirs constitute a public nuisance which are dangerous to the public health and safety or to property.”

It’s too bad the State of Hawai’i didn’t know about the condition of the 53 “high hazard” dams on Kauai before last week’s flooding, which killed seven people. After all, the dams are all earthen and date to the 19th century, long before modern safety standards. Yet the Honolulu Star-Bulletin just reported that the state hasn’t inspected a single dam anywhere in Hawai’i for over a year. State officials don’t even know who owns many of the dams. “Ownership of the dams in these cases is a complicated issue,” state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Director Peter Young said in a March 15 press release. “DLNR is conducting further investigation into the legal ownership of these structures.” -Anthony Pignataro

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD REEKING AS A CAREER Homeless New Jersey man Richard Kreimer said in February that he had settled, on undisclosed terms, part of his most recent lawsuit, against a transit company and two drivers, for having denied him rides because of his foul odor. Kreimer’s history includes a $150,000 settlement in 1991 with the public library in Morris County, which had tried to keep him out because of the odor, and, by his count, $80,000 in additional lawsuit-related income (though some went for legal expenses). Kreimer dropped another foulodor lawsuit in February, against a transit company and a train station in Summit.

GOOD NEWS FOR COLLEGE KIDS In January, history professor David Weale of Canada’s University of Prince Edward Island offered B-minus grades to any students in his overcrowded class if they would just go away, and 20 of the 95 accepted. But the administration found out, and Professor Weale, who had retired last year but returned to teach that one course, was forced into re-retirement.

SCHOOL DAZE In February, Bolivia’s foreign minister proposed to include coca leaves as part of school breakfast programs, noting that

they contain many times more calcium than does milk (and unless processed as cocaine, are not mind-altering). And in November, the Coffee Industry Association of Brazil proposed to help fund a breakfast program for a million schoolchildren as young as age 6, provided that the meal includes coffee.

also was jailed recently for four months in England after a 30-year history of stealing from hundreds of nests. His lawyer told the judge that Wheal needs professional help.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Police in Milford, Texas (just south of Dallas), arrested a man in February who had fled a traffic stop, and in the ensuing chase, saw him tear open

and toss out bag after bag of a substance (but some blew back in the car). When finally stopped, said police chief Carlos Phoenix, the man was “literally covered in marijuana” from the blowback. And in January, in Anchorage, Alaska, a man who had painted his face Smurf-like blue robbed the Super 8 Motel, and police put out a description. A short time later, a caller reported a man with blue smudges behind his ears, and police soon arrested Daniel Peter Clark, 19. MTW

HOME, SWEET HOME Developer Ryan Pedram was finally ordered to stop work on his new three-story home in the Bronx in New York City after he had begun building it flush with a disputed property line, including constructing one cinder-block wall to encompass the trunk of an oak tree that ostensibly belongs to his neighbor. (He had figured on winning the property dispute and removing the tree; his plan, in case of loss, was not reported.) Also, in Brooklyn, a judge recently allowed industrialist Simon Taub to install Sheetrock walls in several rooms in his home as a temporary solution in a pending divorce, to allow both husband and wife to share the house (reminiscent of the 1989 movie The War of the Roses).

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it takes two 12-gram slices to make a single serving of bacon. That serving has 100 calories, eight grams of fat and, like all pork products, a monster amount of sodium—in this case, 370 milligrams. In 2002, the Harvard School of Public Health published research showing that men who ate a lot of processed meat—like bacon—faced a “substantially greater” risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Two years later, a separate, nine-year study showed women who ate more than two servings of bacon each week had a 17 percent greater risk of getting Diabetes than those who didn’t. People have been eating bacon—thinly sliced and salt-cured pig sides—since the

adding a few bacon strips to their egg breakfasts, rather than simply eating bacon with pease, as was the medieval fashion. Practically everyone sells bacon these days. Moose McGillycuddy’s sells a really good, really cheap early morning bacon and egg breakfast. Mark Ellman’s Mala places a couple strips of sweet, delicious applewood bacon on its extravagant hamburger. Those who want excellent, outstanding, incredible bacon tend to go to Longhi’s. SUSHI

Making sushi is an art. Have you ever watched a sushi chef work? He sits behind the bar waiting for you to blurt out what kind of fish you want. He pretends not to notice your crappy pronunciation of Japanese words, and repeats the order back to you in perfect Japanese. “Maagoo-ro Nee-geery” you say. “Maguro Nigiri, Hai,” he replies. Then he gets to work. Lucky for you the Japanese know how to play your game. They make rolls with English names so you can order easily and confidently. You smugly add to your order, “Rainbow roll and California roll” and he comes back with, “Hai, ru-ain-boru ro n kari-fuoni-a ro.” A few minutes later a small bowl holding boiled soybeans is placed in front of you to distract you. Meanwhile your chef is opening and closing the sliding doors of the fish case in front of you. Then he’s slicing gorgeous, shining slabs of raw fish, avocado, cucumber and sprouts. His glistening hands work the rice, yet not a grain sticks to his fingers. Then he skillfully puts all this into a sleeve of seaweed, or he sometimes arranges the roll so the rice is on the outside.

Chef Elaine Rothermel’s

Then he slices it up and arranges it on a platter next to a green blob of wasabi and a pink pile of pickled ginger. Like snowflakes, no two platters look alike. You dive in and it disappears before your eyes. Before you know it’s time to order more. Sushi is the ultimate food. In Western culture it seems ultra-modern but the Japanese have been eating it for centuries. Leave it to the Japanese to find a way to consume raw ocean products in a way that’s as visually appealing as it is delicious. Sushi bars are popular on Maui and you will find one in every town. There are many to choose from: Sansei, Unisan, Wow Wee Kava Bar, Isana, Rockin Sushi, Sushi Paradise, or whatever sushi bar is nearest you. Isana, 515 S. TARO

The National Academy of Science regards taro as one of the most underutilized crops of the world. This is surprising news, since we’ve been utilizing it since 23 B.C. It has also been a Hawaiian agricultural tradition for more than a thousand years. Early Hawaiians allegedly ate 15 pounds of poi—a mashed and strained product of taro—on a daily basis. Taro is an important plant for Ke’anae, where most of the people use the cultivation of the plant as a second income. But harvesting is not easy, due to predation, disease, cost, fluctuation in water source and market demand, and physical labor—most of the work is still done by hand, plant by plant. Perhaps as a consequence, in the past 50 years the 1,000acre Hawaiian industry has diminished to just around 180 acres, most of which are on the Big Island. Although it has been a staple of the Polynesian diet for centuries, today we see taro mainly in the form of chips and luau leaves. It’s a starchy tuber, much like rice but richer in iron, calories and Vitamins B

and C. And it’s hypoallergenic, which means people who are normally allergic to other starches could possibly eat taro as it’s processed into a white flour. As for other local sources of taro, check out the grilled taro burger at Stella Blues Café, the poi and taro salad at Old Lahaina Luau, the poi with kalua pork at the Feast at Lele, the taro-crusted sea bass at the Sea House Restaurant or the infamous taro pancakes at the 14th annual East Maui Taro Festival, Mar. 31 through Apr. 2 in Hana. CHEESECAKE

Back in 2002 The New Yorker ran a story about the popularity Gino’s Italian restaurant in Yorkville held with major league ballplayers. The story mentioned that Wade Boggs used to dine there before games, always ordering the same chicken and plain cheesecake. Then one day he ate his cheesecake topped with strawberries, and went hitless that day. “Boggs never made this mistake again,” Tim Struby wrote. Cheesecake is powerful stuff. Smooth, creamy and undeniably decadent, it sits atop the pyramid of desserts, easily beating out cookies, cakes, pies, ice cream and those little chocolaty pastry things with all the layers. Is it any wonder that the word “cheesecake” has become synonymous with photographs of leggy, scantily clad babes? Cheesecake is big business. Throughout a hundred franchise operations, The Cheesecake Factory sold seven million cheesecakes last year. Flavor options are limitless. Some want slices dense with nuts and/or chocolate chips. Some top theirs with fruit—strawberries, cherries, pineapple, practically anyGuitar • Amps • Bass • Drums

thing with seeds. Stella Blues, undoubtedly among others, sell lilikoi cheesecake. The Kahului Ale House sells a good blueberry cheesecake. The old Plumeria Terrace in the doomed Kapalua Bay Hotel offered a wicked Crème Brulee cheesecake. Then there’s the little Maui Bake Shop in Wailuku. For a scant $3.95, you can get a small but terribly good sliver of white chocolate macadamia nut cheesecake. Bada Bing in Kihei cuts their cream cheese with ricotta—the old New York way. Indeed, cheesecake is a decidedly New York invention—even Philadelphia brand cream cheese—the most popular cheesecake base—was started by two New York dairy farmers.

CHILI

Who would have thought that here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean chili would be king? That’s right, America’s favorite cowboy grub is also the staple of choice for local folks. Nothing is more satisfying than a bowl of chili over steamed rice with a side of mac salad. It’s so versatile, you can even ladle it onto hamburgers and hotdogs, spoon it into a bowl as a side dish, serve it with barbequed ribs or just enjoy it by itself. With Texas laying claim to inventing chili in the early 1800s, and Native Americans claiming they did so earlier still, how did those meaty recipes make it to the melting pot in the Pacific? No one really knows for sure, but my guess is some rogue cowboy made his way to the islands to herd cattle and in the meantime taught his chili-making skills to the Hawaiian paniolos.

Supposedly, cheesecake is ancient. Mary Crownover’s Cheesecake Extraordinaire—the definitive cheesecake recipe guide— insists that the Greeks were eating cheesecake more than 3,000 years ago, and fed it to their Olympic athletes. As for me, I have yet to find my ideal cheesecake. It’s simple, really—a thick slice of plain cheesecake topped with nothing more than a generous pour of Chambord. The liqueur provides the most elegant and satisfying raspberry flavor. Stella Blues, 1279 S. Kihei Rd., 874-3779; Kahului Ale House, 355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, 877-9001; Maui Bake Shop, 2092 Vineyard, Wailuku, 242-0064; Bada Bing, 1945 S. Kihei Rd., 875-0188. (AP)

Anything goes with chili. It’s a smorgasbord of ingredients, including meat, veggies, peppers and spices. Some say you must add beans to chili; others say true chili has everything but beans. Some places take their chili seriously, making it from scratch using carefully guarded home recipes; others just open a can of Dennison’s and enjoy. But true Hawaiian chili is pretty basic, following the moderately spicy with beans model and then served over steamed white rice. Need a hearty bowl right now? Try the chili at Cool Cat Café served over a grilled dog, or the local style chili plate at Cupies with a side of mac salad. You won’t be disappointed. Cool Cat, 658 Front St., 667-0908; Cupies, 134 W Kamehameha Ave., 8773055. (JR)

MASHED POTATOES

“However it is prepared, this root is tasteless and starchy,” said the French philosopher and encyclopedist Denis Diderot in the late 1700s. “One would not include it among agreeable foods, but it does provide plentiful and sufficient healthful nourishment for men who do not require more than sustenance.” Harsh words for our beloved potato, but historians can now say with overwhelming confidence why Diderot felt that way: he never tasted the wondrous delight—and delightful wonder—that is a bowl of mashed potatoes at Outback Steakhouse. And that is a 100 percent true statement— assuming of course that you substitute the word “I” for “historians.” No, really. And I can prove it, too. Did I just say I could prove it? Yeah, see, what I meant to say was that I can… not prove it. But have you ever been to Outback and ordered some of their mashed potatoes? Have you ever dug your fork into that whipped, creamy goodness? Fluffier than whipped cream, tastier than any French Fries or mere baked potato, the

Three, four of my friends and I have sat around a table there and openly and unabashedly dreamed of eating these potatoes—maybe even with a burger or chicken sandwich on the side. My God, man, such mashed potatoes have never before or since been equaled! In a way, mashed potatoes are the ultimate so-called comfort food. Now I’m not saying to only eat salads, but try to balance out all the unhealthy things you do eat by feasting on a great salad. Look for fresh ingredients like spinach, baby greens, field greens, tomatoes, carrots and sprouts. Have something against forking green plants? Have it wrapped in a tortilla. Chinese chicken salad is amazing, with breast meat and greens topped with crispy won ton strips or noodles and tossed in Asian dressing. But don’t settle for one of those fake Cobbs, where all the ingredients are arranged on the plate like a palette—true, honest Cobb Salad is chopped, almost to the consistency of potato salad. A great chopped salad is one of my favorite meals. A salad bar is also a good place to start, and Hawaiian Moons in Kihei has an excellent one. You can choose from so many different ingredients already prepared and cleaned. Alive and Well in Kahului also has a salad trio that you can order at the deli, which gives you a sampler platter that will stuff you, guilt-free. The taco salad at Maui Tacos will satiate your appetite with beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole. I hate pineapple. I think it is a deplorable fruit, too sweet and overwhelming, apparent in so many Pacific Rim and Caribbeanstyle dishes. And I say this with no hesitation, as a food lover, and fully aware of the significance pineapple has played in the shaping of Hawaiian history. But I cannot help my bias—it runs long and deep. As with most of my issues today, I can blame my mother for this. Well, her and the Beverly Hills Diet. This was one of those fad diets in the ‘80s which

the digestive system. Needless to say, the herbaceous perennial became Hawai’i’s second largest industry in the early 1900’s. Apparently, I have my own people to blame; Spaniards introduced the pineapple to King Kamehameha in 1813. But then, nearly a century later, James Drummond Dole harvested his own pineapples on Oahu, founding the Hawaiian Pineapple Company and creating a legacy of canned pineapple for the rest of the nation to savor.

entailed something called “Conscious Combining,” which basically meant you had to eat whole fruits—strawberries, papayas, watermelon, etc.—and nothing else for the first 10 days. Sounds easy, right? Except that you couldn’t combine fruits. For instance, if you were eating watermelon, you had to eat the watermelon in its entirety, including seeds, and nothing else, morning to night. On the day that I was supposed to eat three whole pineapples, and nothing but pineapples, I got the runs. My mouth broke out in bloody, painful sores. And my stomach felt like a World War II minefield. It was a special feeling that I can recall nearly every time I see, smell or—god forbid— have to once again, taste a pineapple. Although seriously skewed, what the diet was honing in on was the pineapple’s amazing holistic properties. It has tons of Vitamins A and C, as well as an enzyme called Bromelain, which has been used to treat heart disease, arthritis, upper respiratory infections and is an important aid to

Yuck! They even went on to become a symbol of hospitality, which makes sense here on the islands, despite its overwhelming awfulness. So if you must have this obnoxious spiky fruit, give it a go at the Pineapple Grill, where you can have a tangy pineapple coleslaw with your sandwich or caramelized pineapple and soy butter sauce with a pistachiowasabi pea seared ahi. Or try ruining your pizza with the ever popular “Hawaiian” combo—that’s ham and pineapple, of course—at your favorite local pizzeria. As far as desserts go, some would also say that Pacific’O’s banana pineapple lumpia is delicious, as well as the pineapple flambé at WM. But I’d imagine these same people probably also like eggplant. CHOCOLATE

I believe the discovery of chocolate is the most important thing to have happened to civilization, next to the invention of the wheel. Mayans were the smarties who discovered the cacao tree somewhere between 250 and 900 A.D. Since then, chocolate has lifted the spirits of people worldwide with its confections, from truffles, cakes and pastries to pints of Ben & Jerry ice cream and edible undies. I looooove chocolate. Although I am not one of those women who equate its velvety texture, creamy flavor

guess you could say. Decadent as it sounds, this particular treatment makes sense. Chocolate’s beneficial properties range from reducing anxiety, lifting your energy, reducing pain and increasing blood circulation. It’s also a powerful antioxidant. But chocolate is probably best known for its “feel-good” qualities. Most people are acquainted with its mood-lifting chemicals—caffeine and theobromine. And chocolate also appears to boost endorphins and serotonin. In

and dark musky scent to the pleasures of sex, I do admit on occasion to enjoying multiple chocorgasms. It’s happened with Roy’s Chocolate Soufflé, but that’s so obvious. It’s also happened at Ruth’s Chris Steak House with their Chocolate Sin Cake—a companion and I even deemed it as a possible antidote for morphine addiction. And I might’ve given a shudder and a sigh to the Chocolate Pot de Crème at Penne Pasta, the Nutella and banana crepe at Café des Amis, and the chocolate martini at Sansei, or anywhere that has Godiva liqueur, really. Sometimes it’s best to have those chocorgasms at home. So I am constantly refilling my supply of the Endangered Species’ Extreme Dark Chocolate bar that I get at Mana Foods but which I’d imagine are available at any health food store. I am willing to try anything chocolate, with few exceptions. So when I heard about the Spa Moana’s Chocolate Macadamia Nut Body Wrap, I was all over it—or under it, I

fact, researchers at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego recently discovered something else: chocolate contains anandamide, a chemical akin to marijuana in its calming effects on the brain. Needless to say, after my chocolate body wrap, my skin was soft and supple and smelled delicious, although I had to resist the urge to lick my arm in public. Oh, and you might have to wait until next February for this special spa treatment, which I’m sure will be ample time for my skin to develop the munchies. NAMED MAUI’S BEST ADULT STORE

Any Given Tuesday On an island where inexpensive food usually involves a fast food window or paper plate, finding a reasonably priced meal that’s both filling and satisfying is not an easy task. My solution to this problem comes in just two simple, elegant words: TACO TUESDAY. Every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Compadres in the Lahaina Cannery Mall offers tacos for a buck, $3 Coronas and margaritas as well as free chips and salsa. In fact, Compadres knows their tacos are too good to wait for so on Tuesday nights they set up a special window just to the left of the bar where hungry customers can exchange their dollars for a delicious taco dinner. On any given Tuesday you can choose between beef, chicken or bean tacos. And these are good, too—a bit small, perhaps, but they’re still filling. After you’ve paid for your taco, the people behind the counter fill a corn taco shell with your requested meat or beans, lettuce, tomato and salsa fresca. Once you’ve been handed your tacos be sure to make a stop at the salsa bar directly behind the taco counter to add some additional zest to your meal.

Compadres Bar & Grill Lahaina Cannery Mall, 661-7189. $ While the tasty food and drinks specials are reason enough to stop in to Compadres Tuesday nights, Taco Tuesday is also a social hotspot. Even if you haven’t made plans to meet friends, you’re likely to run into at least a handful of people you know. The majority of the crowd is composed of local 20 and 30-somethings filling up on tacos, enjoying pau hana or just coordinating their next stop. Occasionally there’s a live reggae band to entertain the crowd but generally there’s just friends gathered at the bar and on the lanai. While the crowd is mainly local, there’s a certain conglomerate of tourists who clearly stand out from the young kama’aina crowd and are easily spotted. Look for the women wearing carefully ironed sundresses sipping vodka sodas or

They sure are ugly but man, they’re too good to wait for!

the men in khaki shorts and polo shirts downing Budweisers. While the dollar tacos are my favorite food item at Compadres, they also offer a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu with all the classic dishes. The menu is divided into aperitivos such as the six-layer dip ($10.95), macho nachos ($12.95), or my favorite, the Texas Quesadillas ($13.95), fajita marinated grilled chicken or signature carnitas wrapped in a large flour tortilla with chopped green onions, Monterey jack cheese, cotija cheese and salsa fresca. If the aperitivo section doesn’t appeal to you there’s a full variety of sopas and ensaladas, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, rellenos, chimichangas and signature items. One of the classics in the signature sections is the fajitas ($16.95-23.95) which offers a choice of meat grilled to order, sliced thin and served with whole pinto beans, grilled onions, peppers, guacamole, sour cream and salsa fresca. Another favorite are the Texas Quesadillas ($13.95), fajita marinated grilled chicken or signature carnitas wrapped in a large flour tortilla with chopped green onions, Monterey jack cheese, cotija cheese and salsa fresca. The fish tacos—battered and fried and served with huge helpings of rice and beans—are quite popular. But those on a budget, there’s still no substitute for waiting until Tuesday before visiting Compadres. MTW

Roots Ras Reggae Friday, 9:30 p.m. at Charley’s; Monday, 10 p.m. at the Kahului Ale House [REGGAE] When you hear Rastafarians speaking to one another, they say “I and I,” rather than “you and I.” This is because they believe that all people are created equally and bound together under one God, Jah. It is in this spirit that Ras Gabriel and 4-Word put on their roots/dancehall/reggae show. This time around they’re joined by Jus Goodie, who sings in both Hebrew and English. It’s like a spiritual and worldly experience… in a bar. Hey, why not? I like to think of bars as holy places.

Ras Gabriel and the 4-Word Band featuring Shoshana B. with special guest Jus Goodie. Also playing next Thursday, Mar. 30, at Hapa’s, Kihei; Friday, Mar. 31 at Mandala Ethnic Arts, Paia; and Saturday, Apr. 1 at Waveriders, Lahaina. Tickets: $10. [HEIDI KING]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Ocean Noise Thursday, 6-7 p.m. at Ocean Science Discovery Center [LECTURE] No, they’re not blasting Skynyrd under there—at least, as far as we know—but with all the noise from commercial air guns used for oil and gas exploration, seismic surveys, underwater explosives, shipping traffic and low frequency active sonar (LFAS), our humpback whales and other marine life are getting quite a gill-full. Marine mammals are especially dependent on sound for communication and feeding, so it only stands to reason that increased noise underwater could be detrimental to their survival. And so Pacific Whale Foundation is hosting this free talk and slideshow by Marsha L. Green, Ph.D. called, “Effects of underwater noise on marine mammals and fish: research, conservation and politicsâ€?—which is maybe not such a catchy title, but this is serious business here, people. No time for witticisms! We’ll leave that to the journalistic hacks like, uh‌ ME! Yeah‌ ‘cept I’m having a whale of a time coming up with anything so‌ The OSDC is located at the Harbor Shops at Ma’alaea, next to Maui Ocean Center. For more info, call 249-8811.

THURSDAY

Fur Ball Friday, 6-11 p.m. at the Wailea Marriott Resort [FUNDRAISER] Normally, the only good deeds I do on my nights out are tipping well. But if I were ridiculously rich, I would totally adopt thousands of pets and then hire hot boys to tend to them. Until then, the Maui Humane Society is going to need your continued support. Fortunately, they make their fundraising events fun and exciting. There aren’t many nights that you can put on some formal wear and go out to a venue with gourmet food, champagne, live music, raffles, auctions and all that while doing a good deed. And I believe it was Aesop who said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. So true. Tickets: $160. Call 8773680 x32. [HEIDI KING]

Na Palapalai Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater

War Stories Friday, 7 p.m. in room Ka Lama 103 at Maui Community College

[HAWAIIAN MUSIC] In 1997, Kehau Tamure and Kuana Torres joined Akoni Malacas in a group called Akoni & the Palapalai Patch. A year later, Malacas left the group and Keao Costa came aboard, forming the award-winning trio known today as Na Palapalai. All three members honed their natural talent with backyard training from friends, family and kupuna, to release their first album of falsetto-style Hawaiian classics, Makani ‘Olu ‘olu in 2002. Their debut was a success and warranted five Na Hoku Hanohano awards. And just last year, at the 2005 Na Hoku Awards, Na Palapalai took home Best Group of the Year and Hawaiian Album of the Year for their second album, Ke ‘Ala Beauty. Tickets: $28. Call 242-7469.

[LECTURE] The war in Iraq has now entered its fourth year. Want to know what things are really like over there—straight from two Joes who recently got back? At MCC this Friday, “Two Iraq veterans (Mike Hoffman and Kelly Dougherty) speak about why they joined the military, recruiters’ unkept promises, the psychic legacy of being a combat soldier, what this war is really about, the possibility of democracy in Iraq, and why soldiers fight,” says an event press release. Sponsored by Maui Peace Action and the MCC Peace Club, this free talk should be enlightening, to say the least. For more information, call 878-8015. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Conspiracy of Dunces Harry grows a pair but can’t use ‘em With the inane promise of making the “darkest” Harry Potter movie yet, Mike Newell (producer on The Constant Gardener) takes on directing duties to issue forth a gruelingly sluggish film in the latest installment of the vastly overrated movie franchise based on J.K. Rowling’s eggheaded children’s books. On the heels of puberty, the bushy browed Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his friends Ron and Hermione return from their summer vacation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/157 mins.

The promise of a “Triwizard Tournament” consumes half of the film’s overlong two-and-a-half hour running time before giving way to the promise of a cheesy dance ball where teen jealousy trickles down dress gowns like undiluted Kool Aid. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire ticks along like a watch with a dying battery. If “darker” means that the movie makes you close your eyes for extended periods, then this Harry Potter episode seems very dim indeed. Harry Potter is not an interesting character. He’s not especially smart, ambitious or diligent. For all of the “magic” that Potter should be flicking from his wand, he doesn’t hold a candle to the late Bill Bixby’s character on the 1970’s TV show The Magician. Harry’s navel gazing burden, which he bears because of his parents’ death, is his most defined character trait. As such, Harry is a boring protagonist. The audience never has much invested in what Harry will do next, because he’s too busy moping around waiting for something to be done to him. Harry’s valued friends Ron and, the insipidly named, Hermione are too gossip-driven to be as interesting as, say, the kids on Johnny Depp’s 21 Jumpstreet. Neither Ron nor Hermione seem especially good at anything other than talking about Harry’s delicate existence. You could watch all four Harry Potter movies back-to-back and still not feel like you know much about the three main characters because there isn’t much personality to discover. The problem is in the writing. Early on, Harry has a nightmare about Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), the cruel villain responsible for murdering his parents, before the story shifts to the Quidditch World Cup where Harry and his friends witness an attack on the wizards’ tent city by Voldemort’s gang of Death Eaters. Dressed in dunce hats, the Death

Less than magical Eaters leave behind Lord Voldemort’s “Dark Mark” insignia of a gigantic skull and snake on the night sky with an underlying message of white supremacy. Upon their return to Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) inaugurates the arrival of a group of French female students of Beauxbatons and a group of German boys from Durmstrang who will vie to participate in the Triwizard Tournament. In spite of rules that mandate a 17 years-old minimum age for the competition, Harry’s name is mysteriously entered into the “goblet of fire” from which participants are chosen. Much to Ron’s chagrin, the 14-year-old Harry is allowed to participate in the Tournament and their friendship suffers a brief falling out that’s resolved far too soon for much drama to foment. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is an endurance test for its audience. Every plot point is a technical exercise calibrated to add another digit to box office profit without staining your memory or emotions. There’s no humor, no sincerity and no soul to any of the characters. Harry Potter, as a concept, has passed through too many marketing meetings on how his young adult visage should be presented. The result is a vision of youthful impotence. Harry Potter is a fake. Harry Potter screens at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., March 25 as part of the Drive In at Maui Community College. $20 per car. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday, March 29 5 & 7:30 P.M., CASTLE THEATER TRISTRAM AND SHANDY: A COCK & BULL STORY - (R) - A zesty comedic and satirical celebration of storytelling and the life that spills out of it, in the smartly intertwined behind-the-scenes story of 21st century filmmakers' attempt to shoot an 18th century Masterpiece Theater-like period costume drama from what Roger Ebert calls "the most creative team in British filmmaking" and Entertainment Weekly raves is "The first great, mind-tickling treat of the new movie year!" 94 min.

New This Week INSIDE MAN - (R) - Crime, Thriller - Directed by Spike Lee, this heist-that-may-not-be-a-heist picture stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Willem Dafoe. You tell me if it’ll be good. 129 min. (Anthony Pignataro) STAY ALIVE - (PG13) - Horror, Thiller - There will be no disco dancing in this one. Video game fiends get their paws on a new game that hasn’t been released to the public. Oddly, as gamers die on the screen, they turn up dead in the real world. (Heidi King)

Now Showing AQUAMARINE - (PG) - Comedy, Drama, Family - Adolescent best friends need a miracle. When a mermaid washes into one of their pools, she promises that she can grant them a wish if they help her out. It’s about growing up, friends and learning that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the people you love. Aw, I got all mushy on ya. 103 min. (HK) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama, Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? See how they deal with the blind hatred of society over a span of like 20 years. 134 min. (HK) CURIOUS GEORGE - (G) - Animation, Family How cute is this; Jack Johnson does all of the songs and Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke are the main voices. As if the little monkey needed any help getting cuter. That is just frickin’ precious. Oh yeah, you know who Curious George is, right? The monkey that gets in trouble all of the time. Think back, you grew up on this stuff. 82 min. (HK) DATE MOVIE - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance Two of the writers for “Scary Movie” put this one together. It looks hilarious and usually spoof movies don’t impress me. I guess you can’t really go wrong with making fun of relationships and the games we play. 83 min. (HK) DOOGAL - (G) - Animation - Based on a U.K. children’s series. A variety of animals, the leader

being a dog, go on a dangerous voyage to save the world from falling into the hands of the evil wizard, ZeeBadee. Famous voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Fallon, Chevy Chase, Kylie Minogue, Kevin Smith & Jon Stewart. 81 min. (HK) EIGHT BELOW - (PG) - Action, Adventure - Paul Walker stars in this new Disney movie about sled dogs. It takes place in Antarctica where a series of events leads to eight sled dogs being stuck out in a storm. Based on an article in National Geographic. Unfortunately, it’s cold weather, so Walker will probably be keeping all of his clothes on. 120 min. (HK) FAILURE TO LAUNCH - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance - Matthew McCanoughey and Sarah Jessica Parker star. It reminds me of “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”. Matthew (Tripp) is charming and sexy and doesn’t want to commit. Parker is a Professional Motivator who’s hired by Tripp’s parents to get him to finally leave the nest. But have they finally stumbled upon there soulmates?!? 96 min. (HK) FINAL DESTINATION 3 - (R) - Thriller, Horror Follows the same story line as the first two. High school girl predicts a tragic incident, this time it’s a roller coaster accident, then it happens. The people she convinced to not ride the ride now have to try and cheat death again and again and again... 92 min. (HK) THE HILLS HAVE EYES - (R) - Drama, Horror, Thriller - A family sets off to have a fun little road trip down to San Diego. They’re tires mysteriously blow out and leave them stranded in the middle of nowhere. Creeping noises and inexplicable things start to happen.....aaaaaaaaaaand...enter the mutant people, begin bloodfest. 107 min. (HK) THE LIBERTINE - (R) - Drama - Johnny Depp stars as a scurrilous but disturbingly hot and decidedly free-thinking (read: boozin’ and sexin’) poet and the second Earl of Rochester in 17th century England. Oh, he’s such a naughty boy. Do you like him now? How ‘bout now? 104 min. (Samantha Campos) PINK PANTHER - PG - Comedy - Steve Martin plays well-to-do Inspector Clouseau. The Pink Panther is an amazing diamond that has been stolen and the Inspector, through “unintentional” slapstick comedy and dumb luck, is trying to catch the culprit. Don’t forget about his hilarious accent. 92 min. (HK) THE SHAGGY DOG - (PG) - Comedy, Family - Now Disney is ripping off… Disney. In this “update” of the 1959 Fred MacMurray film of the same name, Tim Allen plays a workaholic District Attorney who turns into the family dog. Man, that’s science fiction! Who’s going to believe Allen is a DA? 98 min. (AP) SHE’S THE MAN - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance - A teenage girl poses as her twin brother at a new school. It’s a love octagon with everyone crushing on somebody else, teenage angst, confusion and sexual awkwardness. Amazingly, it might actually be funny. 105 min. (HK) 16 BLOCKS - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - Bruce Willis plays an aging cop that is assigned to get Mos Def’s character from the jail to a courthouse. The problem is; cops want dude dead. It’s tough to be a cop running

What’s the 3-11? Speakin’ easy about wives, burgers and modern rock They’ve been together for nearly 20 years. Fusing rap, rock and ska, they hit it big with their 1995 singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up.” Since then, all but one of their albums have been in the top 15 on the Billboard charts. They got their name from the police code for indecent exposure. And they’ll be playing their first show on Maui this weekend. Recently, we talked with 311 bassist P-Nut by phone.

311 Sunday, March 26, 7 p.m. at the A& B Amphitheater, MACC. Tickets: $43, $38. Gates open 5 p.m. Call 242-7469.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: You just came back from Jamaica. How was that? P-NUT: Beautiful, except that my wife wasn’t there. You’re not going to believe that I’m actually ordering a burger right now. So hold on one short second… It’s lunchtime there, yeah… so are you excited to come to Maui? Yes, of course. [Burger Lady]: Do you want ketchup? No, thanks. The only fault of the Jamaica trip was that my wife wasn’t there. But she’ll be able to come out [to Maui]. Ah, that’s perfect. Will you guys get to chill out here or are you going right back on the road? Um, we are going to be home for a week—

well, a little less than that… actually about five days all together. And my wife is coming to see me in Maui, as a matter of fact, and spend a couple of days with me, so it’s going to be really nice. Nice and mellow, and we will forget all about being separated in Jamaica. Yeah, I think Maui will let you forget all about that. I read something about you guys doing a 3-11 Day in New Orleans. How did that get started? Well, we heard about fans getting together and listing to music on March 11, and [we decided] that it would be a good idea to do a concert that day and celebrate the best of the band and what we could come up with, and, you know, turn it into a marathon eventually like it did. It started officially in 2000, and in 2004 we filmed it, released it, and then we just did the show in Memphis last week. I’m still reeling from it ‘cause it was such an expenditure of energy. Yeah, I bet. I know you guys do a major set, too—a few hours or something like that? Yeah, we did like 65 songs. We started at 7:30 and ended at 12. Yeah, it was insane, a lota, lota fun. That’s why we only do it every two years. We were really disappointed that we weren’t able to do the show in New Orleans this time but Memphis was an easy second choice, another open container town. A good destination for Americans to see—that was one of the things that made us really happy to go to New Orleans. Every time we go there we have so much fun. Yeah, you can let it go. Hey, it’s St. Patty’s day today, speaking of letting go. Are you going out tonight? No, no. I’m just going to be recovering from

the tour. I’m not the most social person. When I’m home, I just like to be at home and cook with my wife and hang out and enjoy the space that we created together. Yeah, you want to be sleeping in your bed, vegging on your couch... For sure. I got to have some grounding. It’s good to have the balance, it makes it all that much more worthwhile. So when you’re on the road, what are you listening to music-wise? You know, oddly enough, I didn’t listen to much specific stuff. I’ve been listening to a lot of vintage reggae and Curtis Mayfield, like always, and Ween. They’re so great. And uh, I love the most recent Coheed and Cambria disc. I am always singing the praises of their cre-

ative spark. The bass player is kick-ass. It’s going in such a unique direction that I can’t help but love every iota. So as far as this show, are you going back to the 311 old-school roots? Yeah, we always play our older stuff—it’s always a big part of the set, not an overwhelming part, but we always love to tip a little nod to the first albums. And we always play a diverse set, just kind of appreciating what we’ve done, and still looking forward. Well, I know your burger is getting cold so I’m going to let you go, and I really appreciate you taking the time out to talk to me. Not a problem, I am happy to do it. I appreciate you cutting it a little short. No worries ‘bout the burger. I got a microwave. MTW

Some people don’t understand your passion, probably because they’ve never let themselves experience anything like it. They see it as changeable, inconsistent and unreliable—which it is, but so what? It’s a tremendous, all-consuming flame, constantly hungry for new fuel to feed it. That scares them. This week, though, you have a chance to introduce someone to the painful joy that real passion entails. Just don’t instantly unleash the full force of that fiery intensity, because at the first singe they’ll turn tail and run for the hills. Warm them up slowly. If you really take your time, you’ll eventually light a fire so bright it’ll cut your electricity bills in half.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I recently tracked down an old Taurus friend. It was easy. He had the same number he’s had for the last 10 years. In the same amount of time, I’ve lived in half a dozen different cities and wandered the whole world. I was impressed and deeply intrigued, as I always am with someone who’s quite consciously made different choices than I have. I guarantee there’s a lot of richness to be gained there. This week, track down and catch up with someone you loved, but whose choices diverged wildly from the ones you made. You both have something important to be learned from the other—and guess what? There’s fun to be had there, too.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) This is a good week, astrologically, what with your ruling planet, Mercury, pulling out of its hassle-causing retrograde movement, and Mars having a hot threesome in your house with sexy Venus and mysterious Neptune. What does all this mean in human terms? Perhaps nothing amazing, per se, but whole mountains of pleasantness lie before you; everything you set your hand to at the moment will turn out at least alright. You could just chill and enjoy it, if you like. But you could also see that as a good base upon which to build. You could turn this above-average week into an extraordinary one. That, my dear, is entirely up to you.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Honolua Surf Co. is now hiring:

Don’t self-sabotage. You may feel daunted by the convolutions of the path ahead of you, but to quit before you’ve begun would be incredibly stupid. After all, you’ve been training for this kind of thing your whole life (especially since the obstacle course ahead is mostly of your own design and choosing). It won’t be easy, but if anyone can navigate that treacherous maze, it’s you. What’s the worst that could happen, after all? Yeah, it would suck to make it three-quarters of the way through and then fail. But I can’t help thinking that even though breaking your own leg now would be easier, it would, in the bigger picture view, suck a whole lot more.

Managers, Assistant Managers, Supervisors, Full and Part time Sales

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Darling, I know how much you want to be loved. And you’re never happier than when you’ve got your entourage of admirers. But you’ve also got to learn to operate and shine without your coterie/lover/minions. It may not come naturally to you; after all, lions are social creatures who normally operate in a pride. But it’s also necessary for not only your happiness but your survival, because those who love you simply can’t be there all the times you need them to. You’ve gotten lazy, using all that attention to supply the radiance you’re famous for. This week, let your shine come from within, regardless of who’s there to notice or appreciate it.

We offer competitive pay, generous employee discount, 401K plan, Medical and Dental insurance, and opportunity for career advancement.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Apply at any of our Maui locations: Front Street, Cannery Mall, Whalers Village, South Kihei, Shops at Wailea Or fax resume to: 667-2875

Transcend anything that might be construed as prudish. You’re not naturally squeamish or prim (what earth sign is?) but you’re sometimes innocent or inexperienced in a way that can come off as straitlaced or pedantic. However, considering the crowd, or person, you want to impress this week, displaying anything less than a lusty sense of humor and an eager willingness to try anything at least once would be doing yourself an injustice. After all, here’s a chance to become that much more worldly and experienced—and have a blast doing it. Please, darling: don’t blow it.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) As I’ve gotten older, I’ve nurtured a growing appreciation for you guys. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still terribly bored by those Libras who manifest their impulses towards balance by choosing an incredibly average middleof-the-road path. They’re stultifyingly “nice” and “normal.” However, those Libras who are more ambitious and imaginative, who take their artistic impulses and sprint with them, who use their flexibility, in every sense of the word, to add true beauty and not just bland prettiness to the world—those Libras are my heroes. If you’re not fulfilling that gorgeous potential, get on it. Remember, you’ll never be anyone’s hero by maintaining the status quo, diluting or obscuring your individuality, or just being “nice.”

Lahaina’s soon to be amazing Chinese Restaurant is seeking the following positions:

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re the kind of acquired taste it’s hard to shake. People may cringe at your intense flavor at first but given a second or third chance, they often come around to loving it. You’ve been getting down on yourself lately, because people haven’t been lapping you up like ice cream. They just haven’t gotten used to you yet. It’s certainly no reason to try to tone yourself down so that more people can enjoy you. Be patient. If you’ll just hang tight, I guarantee that at least a few of those people who initially turned their noses up at what you had to offer will soon come back around for more.

•Restaurant Manager •Bookkeeper •Wok Kitchen Staff

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Unlike you, some of us don’t spring from our beds looking as fresh as daisies. We’ve got horrible bedhead, morning breath and bags under our eyes, and it takes at least a little while before we’re ready to face the world, let alone embark on the next adventure. Oh, you need some prep, too? We’d never get that impression from the kind of superhuman attitude you’ve been sporting lately. I have to tell you—it’s put a few of your potential admirers off. You don’t need to flaunt your flaws, exactly, but letting us catch a glimpse of them wouldn’t be so hard, would it? I think you’ll find that the whole picture of who you are—good and bad—earns you more respect (and gets you laid more often) than trying to put your best face forward.

(Experience prefered but not required)

Email resume to craig@zuihao.net

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Many Capricorns think of their bodies as machines—something to be maintained and often a source of embarrassment or inconvenience. But this week you’re likely to remember, quite viscerally, how great a fount of pleasure and joy your body can be, despite its imperfections or “malfunctions.” Go with it. It’s about time you revised your perception of your body and started to actually love it, instead of just deal with it. You’ve too long had a kind of disconnect between heart, mind and flesh. This week’s sensual potential could be just the thing to heal that gap.

3 GUYS a computer and stacks of CD’s KINKY

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Watch where you’re slinging the cooling influence of the water you carry this week, Water Bearer. Although people mostly benefit from the kind of reason and logic you bring to emotional situations, it can also be quite a damper if improperly used. Sometimes people need to explore extremes of feeling—even if they’re dangerous— to learn something new about themselves, or just to satisfy themselves that they’re really living their lives. So be wary about the kind of help you offer this week. If you see someone in flames, certainly get the bucket ready. But don’t put the fire out unless you’re quite certain they want you to.

Monkey

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Spankers

I’ve never met a Pisces who could perfectly “fit in.” Despite your extreme malleability and changeability, or perhaps because of it, consistently blending into your surroundings and not startling people nearby with your numerous eccentricities has always been impossible. That tendency’s likely to be magnified this week, so don’t torture yourself with perceived social pressures. We love you just the way you are. Let it all hang out. It will, anyway, and we’d much rather you sported all your idiosyncrasies with grace and pride, rather than spend your time and energy scrambling to try to cover them up.

WOULD YOU PAY A 281% INTEREST RATE? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED AT THE ANSWER. When you’re promised a tax refund in 48 hours, it’s not a refund, it’s a loan. If you’re expecting $2000, and you pay a $200 fee to have it in 48 hours, you’re paying an effective rate of 281% to receive it 13 days sooner than you otherwise would. You’re going to be inundated the next few months with ads spouting the virtues of these refunds in hours – don’t believe them. These loans are expensive, often costing more than the return preparation itself. For these reasons we chose not to offer them. We do a lot of other cool things for our clients too.

This week marks an official halfway point for the “season of sorrowful reflection” otherwise known as Lent. These particular 40 days and 40 nights—not the 2002 teen-comedy flick with Josh Hartnett—started Mar. 1 this year and will end Easter Sunday, Apr. 16. Now, I’m not a practicing Christian. Nor am I a non-practicing Christian. But I do find the tradition fascinating. In ancient times, this religious custom included a strict regiment of penance, which included increased prayers, decreased eating—or fasting—and abstinence from all festivities in general, including the sexual kind. Conveniently, there are exceptions made for Irish Catholics on St. Patrick’s Day. Nowadays, the Lent tradition seems to have relaxed somewhat. From what I can tell, most folks simply give up something they regularly enjoy—a favorite food or activity—a sole but meaningful sacrifice that some Christians refer to as a kind of “redemptive death” meant to satisfy the perfect justice of their spirituality. All that sounds pretty heavy, I know. But my friends seem to view Lent as a fun choice— something to test their ability to let go of things. I have to admit, the number of people I know who actually practice Lent has diminished significantly over the years. But every spring, without fail, the topic comes up and I yearn to hear what, exactly, people would be willing to give up for the seven weeks (apparently Sundays don’t count) of Lent. “Hmm… 40 days and 40 nights, hunh?” asked one. “I guess I’d give up fast food. And yelling at my computer.” “Are you talking about that one movie where the guy gives up sex?” asked another. “Yeah, I wouldn’t do that. But I could give up alcohol.” “I couldn’t give up alcohol,” said another. “But I could give up coffee, chocolate, meat and my cell phone.” Still others would give up air conditioning, but not video games; contacting ex-boyfriends, but not flirting; sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, but not petroleum; and one even went so far as to say, “I don’t have nothin’ to give up, I’m still tryin’ to get stuff!” I’m surprised no one said hookers. But not cocaine. And what would I give up? Alcohol is an easy choice, but I’d do that without so much decorum. Television would be a good idea. Chocolate, sugar and carb-heavy foods could be another, if only for the intense gratification I’d feel after stuffing my face at Easter with a basketful. Same goes for sex. Hey, I’m all for delayed gratification. Come to think of it, for 40 days and nights, I would easily give up reggae music, dating, going to the same bar/restaurant/grocery store/porn shop twice in one week, small town gossip, the effects of living so close to the ocean—namely rust—on my Jeep, the likelihood of running into the same people over and over again, trying to find somewhere to eat late night, the notion that I’ll ever buy a house on Maui, thinking I’ll never do enough and that there’s not enough to do, wondering if he’ll call—annoyed if he does/hurt if he doesn’t, the idea that I can have my cake and eat it too. Yes, I am talking about things I normally enjoy… giving it all up… for 40 blissful days and nights of peace and redemption. Doesn’t sound so heavy now, does it? But I’ll tell you what I couldn’t give up: Defending my groove. Being able to make strangers smile and my friends double over with laughter. The appreciative moan of that first bite of dessert and the satisfied sigh of the last. Music. Movies. Reading anything. Late night drunk dials from friends I can taunt the next day. The smell of Kim’s lotion. The way Sasha always takes over my couch. BJ’s giggle. Tommy’s thinking he can beat me in a drinking competition, and me finally realizing nobody will be the winner. That first whale breach of the season. The Sly Mongoose. The friends and family of the Goose. Little Jen’s stilettos. Sonja’s Scandal-labiasness. Elan’s energetic, impromptu gourmet meals. Readers of this column. The intense weekend of my grandmother’s goodbye cocktail party. My mother’s embrace. My step-dad’s patience. Getting endless pictures of friends’ babies. My job. Making my editor blush. Every night’s sunset on the west side. Driving my Jeep anywhere. My other boyfriend, Tony. The sound of ice being stirred in a cocktail glass. And hope. That I can one day have a career I love, a family and a dog. That’ll I’ll figure it all out in the end, mainly. And that I’ll have enough happiness to share. Did I say I would give up chocolate? Okay, I so wouldn’t give up chocolate. What would you give up? Samantha Campos has done nothing and everything wrong for as long as she can remember. MTW
