War Balloons!
What Governor Linda Lingle said in an Apr. 3, 2006 press release on storm damage:
Another chat with a partially informed kook
“Having personally visited the flood-impacted areas and having seen the devastation, it is clear that any legislation providing flood victims with relief must be available in a fair and comprehensive fashion… We should extend tax credits to all those who have lost property or suffered property damage statewide.”
The U.S. occupation of Iraq has officially entered its fourth year, with no end in sight. To get insight into how the war is affecting the average man on the street, I talked recently with Howard T. Muskogee of Wailea. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Thanks so much for talking with us about the war. HOWARD T. MUSKOGEE: My pleasure. I’ve been saying for a long time that this whole thing stinks.
What she didn’t say:
Um… I mean, you could blast them out of the sky with slingshots! Slingshots! They’re just balloons! If they didn’t work in the Civil War, why the hell would they work now? Doesn’t anyone in the government think these things through?
Tax relief? Why not just organize a public-private partnership and pay victims that way? Oh yes, I forgot—some state legislators think something might be amiss with the way Lingle’s been using public-private partnerships to pay for things like trade missions to China and such. In fact, they just voted last week to get the state auditor to look into those trips and see if getting all those companies to underwrite trip costs without going through the usual bid processes violated state procurement laws. Then again, Lingle’s raised less than $1 million through these things, so they probably wouldn’t be able to give storm victims that much in relief. -Anthony Pignataro
Really? Howard! It’s all messed up. I mean, take a look at this Associated Press story that ran in The Maui News on April 5. Just look at this headline! That tells you everything: “Must-pass legislation tempts panel; bill to fund war balloons.” That’s outrageous! I’ll say. I recently read an estimate that the war is costing taxpayers $2 billion every weekNot that, you pencil-necked cretin—the part about the war balloons. What the hell are we doing funding war balloons? I’m sorry, what was that? War balloons, you imbecile! Why is the Pentagon funding war balloons? My God, even I know that war balloons are totally obsolete. Why, you don’t even need a missile to shoot one down-
What? And don’t call me Howard. We’re not friends. I don’t even know you. For all I know, you could be a serial arsonist. Call me Mr. Muskogee. Okay, Mr. Muskogee. I think you might have read the headline wrong. I mean, it certainly is awkwardly phrased, but I think you’ve got the wrong idea. The bill isn’t funding war balloons—it’s funding for the war that’s ballooned. What? See, the story’s about how congressional funding for the war has ballooned this year. See, if you read the first paragraph of the story, you see that legislators added more than $10 billion in new war spending just last week. Mr. Muskogee, I don’t-

Mismatch
How I got rid of three junk cars for free
PHOTO: PIETRO ORTIZ
I recently had a big a problem. I live Upcountry, so like most of my neighbors, I drive 45 minutes to and from work. I have driven cheap Maui junker cars all my life. I know them, I’m comfortable with them. But somehow, due to circumstances completely beyond my control, I accumulated three junkers. They sat in my front yard and driveway, collecting dust and rust. I needed to get rid of them, and I had no idea how to do it. Now, I’ve always said that I wouldn’t abandon a car. I’ve always said that I would get rid of it the “right way.” I mean, the abandoned car problem on Maui has become unconscionable. Around every country road, main highway or hidden in the cane fields, there seems to be a local pick-n-pull. One day you see the car, sitting there all innocent. “Oh, perhaps the owner went to get a spare tire and they’re coming right back,” you say to yourself as you drive by, hoping that it’s true but knowing it’s not. Then the next day, you pass the same car and see it’s now missing tires. The next day the window is shattered and the following day it’s been spray painted with a seasonal theme. It sits there forever, literally forever, slowly returning to nature right before your eyes like one of those National Geographic films showing a dead rodent decompose in the wild. Who would do this and why? Everyone likes to blame the crack heads. Surely no respectable citizen would do such a thing as simply dump a car on the side of the road and walk away. But here I am, a taxpaying, non-drug taking private citizen who works for a nationally respected company. I recycle everything I can, even if I don’t get a nickel back on the return. And yet I spend too much time dreaming about pushing my broke-down ‘94 Ford Festiva and my boyfriend’s two trucks over a cliff. Are there support groups for this kind of thing? At first I thought, “Let’s just get these things towed.” Simple, right? I heard Kitigawa’s was the cheapest. And by “cheapest,” they mean $400 to tow a car. I threw up after I found that out. If a person like me can only afford junker cars, how the hell can we afford $400 to tow it away? I’m getting desperate, so I start thinking of desperate solutions. I could rob a bank. No—I’ll call the tow truck, and once he gets my cars I’ll just run away and lock myself in the house until he gives up and leaves! No, that wouldn’t work either. But the more I drive around, the more every spare stretch of highway, cliff, gulch and cane field looks to be a way out. I can’t do that. So I called the county. Surely my tax dollars are going to some-

thing that can help me right now. Surely there has to be some program for people like me, who can’t afford to tow their own broken mess away. “Call Kitigawa’s,” the clerk said before hanging up. Now I’m mad. So I called back. “WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THIS ABANDONDED CAR PROBLEM?” This time she connected me to Mike Miamoto, the Solid Waste Division’s director. He was friendly. He told me that once a car is left somewhere for a specified amount of time, the Maui Police Department tags it, then faxes a report to the Solid Waste Division, who in turn passes the buck to the Towing Coordinators who select a tow company that will tow the junk car to a lot for future auction. If the car’s a derelict, then it goes to a processor for disposal. Miamoto said they’ve been towing “about 1,200 cars a month” and that they’re going to ask “the system” for more money to keep going. That’s a lot of cars, but what about my problem? What are the options for people like me who, through no fault of their own, ended up with three junk cars on their front lawn? “They are working on it,” he said. I told him that there should be a program for people who are trying to do the right thing, which is get rid of the cars before they end up on the roadside where they can decay into a public endangerment and environmental toxin. After all, the animal shelter gave me a coupon so I could neuter my cats, because the county doesn’t want little kittens everywhere. Why isn’t there some incentive like that so we don’t have little cars everywhere?
LC Watch
Miamoto said he understands. He’s got six cats. As it is, the county gets a discounted contract price with a couple of local tow companies. I told Miamoto that if they could pass this savings onto us, then I bet the number of cars on the side of the road would diminish. Miamota said he would share this with the person they’ve hired to focus on this problem, and that was that. Then I called the mayor’s office, but all I got was the exact same runaround. I was back to square one. I couldn’t afford to tow, or wait for the county to do something. I had to get rid of the cars. So I took a breath, swallowed my pride, and did what I should have done a long time ago. I put an ad in the paper. “FREE Ford Festiva, Toyota 4-Runner, Nissan Truck! For parts or maybe you can fix it,” it said. And at the bottom were the words “YOU TOW.” You know what? It worked, and now I have no junk cars in my driveway. MTW
Even Gabriel Sallard will admit he’s a lousy attorney. But that wasn’t the point. On Apr. 6, Sallard—one of the owners of the Tiki Lounge in Kihei—appeared before the LC’s Board of Adjudication on two counts related to his club allegedly overserving a 26-year-old girl back in July, 2005 (See “Tiki Lounge,” Mar. 30, 2006 for more on the case). Most licensees simply trade no contest pleas for lighter sentences, but Sallard chose to fight the matter. He also chose to represent himself. Sallard said his reasoning for taking such an extraordinary step was financial. At most, considering it was his club’s first offense for over-service, Sallard faced $4,000 in fines—$2,000 for each count. An attorney could easily cost him much more. “If I thought I was guilty, I would have pled no contest and been done with it,” Sallard said on the day of his trial. “But I honestly don’t think we did anything wrong.” Indeed, the case preceding Sallard’s over-service matter dealt with a charge that Tiki Lounge violated the LC’s aisle congestion rules. To that, Sallard pled no contest, and received a $500 fine. The trial took two and a half hours, and it was from the outset a hopeless mismatch. Sallard, who had no legal training, faced two deputy prosecuting attorneys— Andrew Martin, who was actually trying his last case before the LC, and his replacement, Jeffrey Temas. Though in a nice step, Sallard did ask that the board secretary read both charges out loud into the record—an act previous boards have all but openly discouraged. Assuming that he would have an opportunity to cross-examine the girl in question, Sallard was stunned to see prosecutor Martin rely solely on LC Investigator David Olsten and his incident report. Stumbling through his own ill-prepared questioning of Olsten, Sallard then unsuccessfully asked the board for a continuance, saying he wanted more time to hire an attorney and subpoena both the girl—who Martin said was now off-island—and her friend who’d also been with her that night. When that died, he rested his case without calling any witnesses. It took the board 25 minutes to find him guilty and sentence him to a $2,000 fine on each count, with $1,000 suspended on each if he can avoid another over-service conviction for a year. -Anthony Pignataro

ing, “Woohoo! Another reason to pile on Ed Case!” I mean, who cares about a Democrat who thinks we should fight in Iraq until Dubya tells us to leave? But then I remembered something: I hate 527 groups. Yes, they largely help Democrats take on the increasingly caveman-like Republicans, but they also make it possible for unlimited big money contributions to take over elections. That’s why good government organizations like Common Cause oppose 527 groups. Ditto The League of Women Voters. And Ralph Nader’s organization Public Citizen. I can argue with Case, but I can’t argue with them.
Today Kathleen from Mana Means Advertising & Public Relations on Oahu called. Yes, Mana Means. The same guys who do PR for Mail Boxes, Etc., Bandito’s Cantina and Wilkinson Shake Roofing, wherever those places are. I know, I was shocked, too. I tried desperately not to sound nervous over the phone. Anyway, Kathleen told me she was working on behalf of a “congressional candidate” and wanted to send me—ME!— some press releases as they became available. Pausing to catch my breath, I told her that was fine, and to just send them to me. “Would fax or email be best?,” she asked. I froze. I didn’t want to seem too informal by saying email, but then again fax machines are horribly obsolete, like steam engines and TV comedies starring Scott Baio. “Either works, but email’s probably more convenient,” I said, throwing caution to the wind. She accepted that easily enough, and that’s when I made my big blunder. “Who is the congressional candidate?” I said, flushed with overconfidence. “Oh, we’re not announcing that yet,” she said, giggling slightly. “But you’ll hear about it soon.”
FRIDAY, APR. 7 Isn’t it great to wake up one morning and find that not only is there such a thing as the Hawai’i Superferry Advisory Group, but that it’s already met twice? Superferry president John Garibaldi told The Maui News today that it was “coincidental” that his company suddenly announced the group as the state Senate Ways and Means Committee toyed with the idea of cutting $20 million in harbor expansion funds—money the ferries need if they’re going to disgorge cars on Maui. And maybe it is all a big coincidence. But let’s look a bit closer at the group itself. It’s apparently been meeting in secret, so it’s not exactly a force for public insight. It’s got six members, so if they ever have to vote on anything, they run the risk of ties. But how often would they deadlock, really? Let’s see: there’s Madge Schaeffer, chairwoman of the Governor Linda Lingle’s Maui Council of Advisors (I think it’s safe to call her proSuperferry); there’s Diane Ho, head coach of the Hawaiian Canoe Club (anti-Superferry, if there is such a thing); there’s Robin Newbold, alternate member of the Humpback Whale Sanctuary Council (pro, given the revelations in our “Whale of a marriage” story from Apr. 6); there’s Mahina Martin, another canoe paddler (anti); there’s Warren Watanabe of the Maui County Farm Bureau (pro); and there’s Teya Penniman of the Maui Invasive Species Committee (anti). Now let’s just add up the
THURSDAY, APR. 6 Big story in today’s Washington Post about House Resolution 513, which would severely limit contributions to socalled 527 political committees that in the last election spent gobs of money on “issue-ads.” Since the vast majority of 527 groups—named for the provision of the Internal Revenue Code that allows them tax-exempt status—benefit Democrats, the bill is seen as a major blow to the party’s ability to fight the Republicans, who raise their money through the party. Anyway, the bill narrowly passed “in a virtual party-line vote”—virtual, because seven Democrats, including our own congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Ed Case (D, 2nd District), voted for it. Now when I first heard all this, I’ll admit to say-

votes and… well, look at that: three pro votes and three anti votes. I see nothing but calm waters ahead.
SATURDAY, APR. 8 Recovering.
SUNDAY, APR. 9 Everything you need to know about how the State of Hawai’i views corrections can be found in this single sentence, taken from today’s Honolulu Advertiser: “The state created a computer model in 2000 that allowed corrections officials to calculate how changes such as a
three-strikes law would affect the prison population, but the state abandoned the computer simulation two years ago after funding ran out.” See, the state is considering a threestrikes law similar to that used in California. But state officials are worried that such a law would explode our already overcrowded prison system, which is already so bad many Hawai’i inmates are actually held in Arizona. Yet state law enforcement officials can’t even scrape together enough money to run a lousy computer model of how such a law would work here. But hey—we gotta lock more people up, right?
MONDAY, APR. 10 With so much focus these days on all the crooks and cronies that seem to infest the Republican-run U.S. Congress, you’d think our own Hawai’i state Legislature would move quickly and decisively to limit lobbyist influence. Or failing that, they could come up with some kind of weak bill that would at least make a show of pushing lobbyists away from the trough. But no. According to an Associated Press story in yesterday’s Maui News, a bill that would have banned lobbyists from giving money to state senators and representatives while the Legislature was in session has died. The bill said nothing about giving money during the eight months of the year when legislators aren’t working on the people’s business, but apparently even that was too much to ask in an election year.
TUESDAY, APR. 11 Just got a press release titled “Governors’ Spouses Take the Lead on Alcohol Awareness Month.” It’s about a new 21-member group called Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free. I was about to toss the thing when I noticed that one of the “Governors’ Spouses” is our own Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona. I wish I could make up stuff like that. Anthony Pignataro is currently working with Jerry Bruckheimer to bring those old Mr. T cartoons they air late night on the Cartoon Network to the big screen. MTW

In fact, Carlyle Group had expected a decline, but one less than two percent. Whereas Verizon Hawai’i made $36.9 million in 2004, Hawaiian Telcom lost nearly $176 million this year… And Maui Land slips a notch after the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported on Apr. 6 that a couple state senators threatened to cut $20 million in Superferry funding. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD ARE WE SAFE? In a two-day period in March, alarming reports revealed that “dirty (radiation) bombs” easily entered the country in car trunks in tests, that one-third of U.S. civilian nuclear research reactors were insufficiently secure, and that concerns were heightened about the 2,000 shoulderfired missiles said to be unaccounted for in the world’s arsenals. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Times reported that the fishing village of Dillingham, Alaska, at least, is secure, now that a $200,000 Homeland Security anti-terrorism grant has paid for 60 “downtown” surveillance cameras (with 20 more to come). Dillingham (pop. 2,400) is about 300 miles from Anchorage, with no roads linking it to anywhere.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In earnest testimony in March, Douglas Dyer explained how it was just bad luck that his married girlfriend got shot twice, fatally, in the middle of her back by the rifle he was holding. Dyer said he had originally intended to kill himself, but when she grabbed at the gun to stop him, it fired into her hand. Then, as she ran out a door, he followed and bumped the door open with the gun, causing it to fire and accidentally hit her flush in the back. As his body flinched from the shot, banging into a wall, the rifle again accidentally fired, putting another bullet in the center of her back. The Rockland, Maine, jury apparently didn’t believe a word of it and convicted him of murder.

However, a psychoanalyst interviewed by the New York Daily News rejected the suggestion. Farber, said the doctor, just “needs a spanking.”

The Interview Of My Life t was doomed from the beginning. The story had been assigned a month prior, but due to unforeseen circumstances, was redirected to me at the last minute. My phone interview with Ben Harper—yes, the Ben Harper—was to take place Thursday morning, promptly at 7:30 a.m. I scrambled to prepare. At first,I was elated. This was Ben Harper. Ben Harper! I’d coveted nearly all of his albums, from 1994’s Welcome to the Cruel World to 2005’s Live at the Apollo. I even fought with an ex over a copy of 1995’s Fight for Your Mind. And his most recent release, Both Sides of the Gun, is on continuous play in my stereo. Isn’t it every fan’s dream to be able to talk to one of their favorite artists? I should also say that Harper was a folkrock crooning heartthrob before Jack Johnson’s first album hit the Billboards. Oh, and although most serious music critics would never acknowledge this, I’ve got to say that the man is hot. But the elation quickly turned to fear. What the hell would I ask him? As a musician, Harper puts everything out there. It’s hard to ask a songwriter about inspiration when his lyrics— whether about love, politics or social turmoil—are so emotionally honest. His music,as well,is straightforward in its nods to American roots, reggae, funk and rock. Put simply, an interview with Ben Harper was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.

was very familiar with his music, but I had only a few hours to review whatever background information I could scrounge up. I made a chronological list of his albums dating back from 1992, then jotted down notes about specific songs and characteristics I remembered from each. I read every Both Sides of the Gun review I could find. I read a few pages of fans’ posts. And I skimmed through dozens of articles. And I learned a lot. Like, where his love of music started. His grandparents owned the Folk Music Centre and Museum in Claremont, California, where he was raised. I learned that he grew up with hip-hop in the 1980s and that he was starstruck when he met Chuck D. at the Beastie Boys’ Tibetan Freedom Concert in New York, and that the highlight of winning a Grammy was seeing the look on his mom’s face. And that he currently has Stereophonics, John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things and Coldplay in his CD player. He’s also fond of old cars—in 2003, he had a ‘62 Impala but was considering investing in an Escalade for more cargo space. And I read of his spiritual and physical transformation when he had his back covered in moko—Maori tattoo—in Aotearoa. I also learned that he got married last December to his longtime girlfriend (and mother of two of his four children) actress Laura Dern; that he recently recorded a reggae version of the Beatles’ song “Michelle;” that he worked with Jack Johnson on the soundtrack to
I
Curious George; and that on his new CD, he wrote the songs, played all the instruments, self-produced and is now extensively touring for and promoting it. I listened to a webcast of a radio spot Harper did with his bandmate, just to get used to the sound of his speaking voice, so it wouldn’t throw me off on the phone. I also didn’t want to ask the same questions previous reporters had, so I scoured any interview I could find on the Internet. Some of the information intimidated me. In a Feb. 27, 2006 Sydney Morning Herald story titled “Ben’s other side is worth a look,” Jane Rocca reported that while Harper has been construed as arrogant and esoteric, he may be “one of the industry’s quietly misunderstood rock stars.” “People take me as being difficult when there are certain questions that are unanswerable,” said Harper in the article.“But what I mean is in the song. It’s for everyone to hear and interpret.” Then there was Angela Chiew, the Australian girl who transcribed her lengthy 1998 interview with Harper. In it, Harper validated my worst fears when he either humbly or sincerely admitted that he didn’t have much to say beyond his music. “I’m not that interesting,” he said. “Certain people would find me extremely boring. I can’t talk about like 18th century literature or what really fine or pretentious people like. I don’t know about a whole lot but I know I love to make music.” You can’t blame a man for that. But the
rest of the interview was mainly an ingratiating account of all the times Chiew had seen Harper, mixed with the six degrees of people they knew in common, as well as her shameless attempt to connect with what she believed was Harper’s shared fanaticism of Jeff Buckley. While Chiew’s admiration was endearing at first, it quickly became nauseating. I vowed to do my best to prevent the same excessive fawning. I did learn from her not to ask Harper about skateboarding, religion or his signature lap-slide Weissenborn guitar— topics reporters repeatedly chose to address. And I wouldn’t dare call his new Both Sides of the Gun 18-track dual-CD a “double album”—he prefers to think of it as two different sides of the same old-school vinyl record. This kind of musical polarity is familiar in Harper’s music. Both with his band, the Innocent Criminals, and solo, Harper makes music that veers from funk, rock, ska, reggae and hip-hop to folk, jazz, middle-eastern and blues. He even won two Grammys for his 2004 soul-gospel album, There Will Be A Light, with the Blind Boys of Alabama. s I went to bed, nervous flashes kept my mind wide awake. I thought of the DVD Pleasure and Pain that I had seen a few years back documenting Harper on tour. But what stuck out for me as I tossed and turned in bed was when Harper was shown doing a series of interviews and a reporter asked some seemingly innocuous question that made him snap. I remember at the time how I sympathized with Harper, thinking the toil of so much necessary but unpleasant media attention had taken its toll, and that the reporter should’ve had more tact or done more research to prevent such a fiasco. I also remember thinking that I would never want to warrant such a reaction from a musician I admire. But what terrified me the most was that I couldn’t remember what the heinous question was. I couldn’t shake the idea that I could potentially, perhaps even subconsciously, conjure it up and ask it. In an attempt to block the flurry of negative thoughts, I once again put on Harper’s latest double-CD, starting with the mellower first disc. In the first disc, Harper poetically infuses his stripped-down acoustic ballads with symphonic strings and a lyrically romantic longing, emphasized by a raw, near-whispered vocal delivery. The result is a beautifully aching, impassioned and quietly imploring vibe— music that speaks to my melancholy soul in no way words ever could. “I was hoping I could come back to

the root of my earlier records, the sparseness and intimacy,” Harper said on his website bio. He also added that the recordings were guided by “absolute fearlessness—just diving into a song and ripping it wide open, with a lot of onetake vocals and guitar solos that are nasty, loose, raw, immediate.” And it definitely shows in the second disc as well. Equally impassioned as the first but showing a harder, funkier edge, the songs of the second CD has critics drawing comparisons to Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Curtis Mayfield and the Rolling Stones.Still naked emotionally, Harper turns his whisper into a scream through hopeful but angry anthems like “Better Way” and “Black Rain”—a song about the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and the neglect that followed. eedless to say, sleep was difficult. About three seconds later my editor walked in and asked me how the interview went. I shrugged, launching into my pitiful explanation. Then the phone rang. I stared at it. My editor stared at it. “You better get that,” he said. I picked up the receiver. “Hi, my name is Ben Harper,” said the voice at the other end. Delirious, I laughingly said, “get outta here” but Harper was more subdued. Panicked but awake,I asked him to please hold for a moment while I gathered my tools. Harper politely acquiesced. “I’m sorry, I thought we were scheduled for 11:30,” he said.“I’m in the middle of a bunch of interviews this morning and got mixed up.” Wonderful. A bunch of interviews. He’s been talking to reporters he’s never met working for publications he’s probably never seen all morning. But I assured him it was no problem.

It was probably going to go well. After all, I had questions I was sure no one had ever asked him before. We’d develop a rapport, even to the point of him asking me to come backstage after the show and say hi… When I got to the office, I connected the digital recorder to the landline. I also checked the website advertising Harper’s tour dates. I opened my pad of questions, as well as some notes on the last album. To relax, I put on some light jazz and tried to remember to breathe. Finally it was 7:30 and I called. The phone rang and rang. Then a female’s recorded voice came on and asked me to leave a message. No problem, I thought, he’ll call me back in a few minutes. I checked out a video of Better Way, which Harper directed with his wife, and waited. A half an hour later, I called again with no luck. Getting a little worried, I phoned the publicist. “Hmm,” she said. “Maybe you should try one more time.” But it was no use. I told her perhaps we should reschedule. She agreed. So I wrapped up my notes, unplugged the

I started to make small talk, asking him where he was (“Chicago”), where he was going next (“New York,” a bunch of places in Canada) and when he would be coming to Maui (“a couple days before the show”). I asked him what a typical day on the road is like, what his most memorable gig on this tour has been so far,and what kind of influence growing up in the Southern California inland had on his music. His answers were thoughtful, but brief. He listened patiently while I droned on nervously about Hawaiian music, growing up in the Southern California desert and how I could relate so well to his music—basically all the fawning I swore I wouldn’t do. He soberly and with as much detail as he could muster, answered my questions succinctly. “I’m a big dork,” I said at one point.“I still make mix tapes.” “No, that’s good,” he said, with some warmth. I started to relax. Then I happened to glance down at my recorder. The word “battery” was flashing and the machine wasn’t doing anything. I hadn’t recorded a word he’d said. Not wanting to let on to my considerable technological blunder, I grabbed my pen and notepad and began scribbling his answers to the next few questions…

I hope it’s how I fantasize it, that it’s some kind of release, with greener pastures. Who knows? We may already be dead and in heaven. Or hell. But I dunno… it feels like we’re alive. he thing about doing a phone interview is that you lose a certain normal, conversational flow. There are long pauses while you catch up with your subject’s quickly verbalized thoughts. They can’t see you and don’t know if you’re even paying attention, but you’re too busy trying to think tangentially about the next question as you’re still writing the previous answer to worry about that. It can result in a stilted, awkward interview. Thinking about this filled me with dread. All my social skills flew out the window, and I wished I could, too. I didn’t know what to ask him anymore. I was completely empty and felt like a loser. I stared at the recorder and my barely legible notes. My entire reporting life flashed before my eyes. I thought back to every interview I’d ever done, every generic question I’d asked, every rehearsed or spontaneous answer they facilitated and the more interesting ones that resulted in rare, editorial gems. But there was nothing more I could pull out this fateful morning. Nothing more I wanted to say. And knowing that he had more interviews ahead of him, I figured Harper would be grateful for a quick goodbye. So I thanked him for his time. “See you in Maui,” he said. And then he hung up. MTW

Wise Decisions The local wonders of Hana Hou Café When you walk into Hana Hou in the Haiku Cannery Mall, through the wood fence that surrounds the outdoor area and past the demure exterior façade, you’ll see some of the most popular local dining options around. Generally when I go to restaurants I sit at the bar because there’s usually no wait, you can get drinks pretty much immediately and you can usually get the full menu during regular hours. And when my friend and I got to Hana Hou recently, I felt a strong urge after walking in to make a sharp right turn and head towards the sushi bar.

DINING
See, most customers pass the sushi bar on the right and take-out window on the left and just keep walking straight through the outdoor seating for a more traditional Hawaiian dining experience. But this time, my friend and I decided to dine outside. We weren’t disappointed. Once we got the menu, we had more difficult decisions ahead of us. The curry shrimp was appealing but I ultimately went with the grilled teriyaki mahi burger ($7.95). My friend was enticed by the curry chicken plate, but opted for the kalua pork and cabbage plate, which was also $7.95.
Since we were dining on the early side, they prepared our food really quickly and served it to us piping hot. My mahi burger arrived slathered in a layer of melted cheddar cheese and served on a toasted onion bun. On the side were several slices of fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, lemon and a serving of caper tartar sauce. The large portion of fish was juicy and tender and tasted even better with a squeeze of lemon and some tartar sauce. The kalua pork and cabbage plate came with a large scoop of rice and macaroni salad. It was also served with a slice of pineapple and piece of haupia. My friend, who knows kalua pork, raved that this was the best kalua pork and cabbage he ever had. There were hearty chunks of pork mixed into the shreds of meat that had already broken apart. The meat was mixed with large pieces and small shreds of tender but still crisp cabbage. What’s more, the dish wasn’t swimming in oil as you so often find with kalua pork and cabbage. The mac salad and haupia were also quite tasty but he said he’d sacrifice them both for another serving of the pork and cabbage. After finishing our main courses we decided to split an order of chocolate lava cake. This was actually our easiest decision of the day. The warm chocolate cake was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, several dollops of whipped cream and a few splashes of raspberry sauce. The gooey warm chocolate center and the cool creamy ice cream were a perfectly sweet end to our meal. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Hooray for Boobies!
Easter Hopp’nings
Thursday, 10 p.m., Hapa’s Nightclub
Friday-Sunday, at the Lahaina Cannery Mall
[BIKINI CONTEST] Hapa’s presents “Bustin’ Out for Spring,” and that’s just what these sexy ladies are gonna do—bust out in those tiny bikinis! Local girls and possibly some chicks from Oahu will strut their stuff for money and prizes. The contest is based on the entire female package, including attitude. There will even be a photographer there so all you guys can prove to friends that the hot mamas did indeed stand next to you. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll touch you when you pose for the photo. Directly following the competition, the Afrodisiacs will take the stage. Nearly naked girls and groovin’ ‘70s music—why, that’s just a few ingredients shy of Studio 54! Our own Tommy Russo will be on the panel of judges. And word is, he likes drinking contests so go ahead and give him a challenge. [HEIDI KING]
[HOLIDAY] My Grandma Honey used to be the best at hiding stuff. My sister and I would play games that involved hiding things in the living room at her house when it wasn’t Easter. She taught me many lessons, but one that’s particularly helpful during this season is that you can often hide things in plain sight and people won’t even notice that it’s there because it’s too obvious. Another lesson is that you should always count your eggs before you hide them. If one gets left behind, especially if it’s inside, I can assure you the result is not pleasant. Happy hunting! [HEIDI KING] Friday, 5:30-8 p.m.—Picture taking with the Easter Bunny! (Easter Cantata at 7 p.m.) Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.—More picture taking with the Easter Bunny, as well as silent auction, Jolie the Clown face painting, Kenn Serrano magic, Easter basket giveaways, keiki hula and performance by LHS school band and choir. Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.—Maui Humane Society mobile pet adoption

Obvious plot similarities to Dreamworks animated kid’s movie Madagascar haunts this superior Disney produced CG animated story about a group of New York Zoo animals that go for an unexpected boat trip to an African jungle. Samson the lion (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland), has convinced his lion cub son Ryan (Greg Cipes) and the rest of the zoo animals of his mythic experiences in the wild.
The Wild
★★★★★ Rated G/85 mins.
The king of the zoo wears his mighty roar like a badge of honor that little Ryan can barely hope to emulate with his slight whimper of a howl. When the forlorn Ryan steals away from the zoo in a shipping container, Samson and his best friend, a squirrel named Benny (Jim Belushi), are joined by Nigel the koala bear, Bridget the giraffe, and Larry the goofy anaconda to rescue Ryan from the wilds of Africa. The animation for The Wild has a more intricate look than Madagascar thanks to director Steve “Spaz” Williams’ CG process that he developed working on films like The Mask, The Abyss, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. However, it’s the unique chemistry of vocal performances by Kiefer Sutherland, Greg Cipes, Jim Belushi, Eddie Izzard (Nigel), Janeane Garofalo (Bridget), Richard Kind (Larry), and William Shatner (as a bloodthirsty wildebeest) that harmonizes the movie. Where Madagascar suffered from vocal interpretations that frequently clashed, The Wild carries a dulcet and dynamic harmony that plays like a well-practiced orchestra.

FILM
Izzard brings an understated nuance and flair to his role as Nigel the egocentric British koala bear. Much of the plot turns on Nigel’s character when he is adopted by a tribe of African wildebeests who believe him to be a deity due to the stuffed koala they have previously been praying to. The strained relationship between Samson and Ryan resonates with an unresolved romantic connection between Bridget the giraffe and her romantic admirer Benny the squirrel. Bridget disdains Benny because of his petite size, but that doesn’t prevent the little guy from trying his heart out to win her over. In the same way that Ryan seeks respect from his father for his effort to roar like a big lion, so too does Benny crave props for his sincere affection and loyalty toward Bridget. Belushi creates a perfectly transparent vocal character for Benny that zings with just the right pitch of emotional investment and youthful exuberance. For her part, Garofalo practically sings Bridget’s voice and outlines her character’s condescension that eventually turns a bit warmer toward Benny. The Wild carries Madagascar’s themes of animals “going wild” and a lion releasing his pent-up primal roar to get in touch with his true nature. And yet, there’s more emotional closeness and paternal significance attached to the animal characters here. Even the music, scored by Alan Silvestri (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), contributes to the aural textures of the story better than Madagascar’s sometimes jarring score did. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Eric Idle, Lifehouse, Coldplay and Everlife contribute songs that nestle into the movie rather than calling inordinate attention to themselves. The Wild is a visually arresting and thematically inspired animated movie that shuns the typical kiddie toilet humor of the genre. It’s a children’s movie that should stand up well to many a repeated viewing. MTW

New This Week LARRY THE CABLE GUY: HEALTH INSPECTOR - (PG13) - Comedy - Larry the Cable Guy stars as the Good Ol’ Boy health inspector in the big city who spends his days frequenting blue-collar restaurants, mixing with regulars and generally perpetuating the redneck stereotype. His routine comes to a screeching halt with the arrival of his new by-the-book partner and a sinister case of food poisonings at one of the most posh restaurants in the city. His reckless methods of investigation appall diners, charms a waitress, and gets him fired, prompting Larry to dust off a fresh bag of “Git-R-Done,” and go undercover to crack the case. Somewhere in Hollywood, a team of chimps thought this was a great idea. 89 min. (Will Watkins) SCARY MOVIE 4 - (PG 13) - Comedy - The fourth installment of the popular horror movie-spoof series… Wait, there was a Scary Movie 3? Really? Who was—ah, forget it. Directed by David Zucker, this one stars Leslie Nielson, Anna Faris and that Dr. Phil guy. 100 min. (Anthony Pignataro) THE WILD - (G) - Animation, Family - A young lion is transported to Africa from the New York City zoo...by mistake. Then freed, also by mistake. His loving ‘ohana from the zoo band together to try to locate and bring him back. Does anyone else think this seems a lot like Madagascar? The difference is this is Disney and that was Dreamworks. Kinda like A Bugs Life and Antz. 94 min. (Heidi King)
Now Showing ATL - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama - A 17-year-old has to assume the position of man of the house. His younger brother is getting into a bad scene and his only joy is going to the hip hop rollerskating rink and being with his girlfriend. I think it’s going to be a cross of Saturday Night Fever and Boyz in the Hood. 105 min. (HK) BASIC INSTINCT 2 - (R) - Crime, Thriller - This, the not-at-all awaited sequel to the 1991 Basic Instinct, finds novelist/psychotic killer Catherine Trammel (Sharon Stone) living in England. Oh, and Stone—who’s 48 years old now—supposedly she gets even more naked than in the original. Enjoy! 114 min. (AP) THE BENCHWARMERS - (PG13) - Comedy, Sports - It’s Revenge of the Nerds meets Bad News Bears in this tale of dorks overcoming all, starring Rob Schneider, a pack of SNL alumni, and that guy from Napoleon Dynamite. Mel the Millionaire Nerd hatches a plan to form a team of pariahs to do battle against the toughest little league team in the state and enlists the aid of Gus and his misfit friends, Ritchie and Clark. Gus’s prowess on the diamond earns him the adoration of the dweeb masses, but what happens when they learn that he was once a bully? I think I smell Oscar. 87 min. (WW)
My agent warned me it would be like this FAILURE TO LAUNCH - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker star. It reminds me of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. Matthew (Tripp) is charming and sexy and doesn’t want to commit. Parker is a Professional Motivator who’s hired by Tripp’s parents to get him to finally leave the nest. But have they finally stumbled upon their soulmates?!? 96 min. (HK) FINAL DESTINATION 3 - (R) - Thriller, Horror - Follows the same storyline as the first two. High school girl predicts a tragic incident, this time it’s a roller coaster accident, then it happens. The people she convinced to not ride the ride now have to try and cheat death again and again and again... 92 min. (HK) ICE AGE 2: THE MELTDOWN - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Animation - I’m sorry but I loved the first one. Suprisingly, the sequel may just be up to par. They’ve got the original voices for this unlikely group of pre-historic animals as they cope with a new set of rules due to the ice, y’know, melting. 90 min. (HK) INSIDE MAN - (R) - Crime, Thriller - Directed by Spike Lee, this heist-that-may-not-be-a-heist picture stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Willem Dafoe. You tell me if it’ll be good. 129 min. (AP) LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN - R - Thriller, Crime, Gangster - Josh Hartnett stars as Slevin, the victim of both an unfortunate name as well a case of mistaken identity, who finds himself in the crossfire of two warring New York Crime Bosses known as The Rabbi (Ben Kingsly) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). To further complicate matters, he must also stay one step ahead of the dogged Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and the nefarious assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis). Wackiness ensues. 110 min. (WW) PHAT GIRLS - (PG13) - Comedy - Mo’Nique Imes plays a fashion designer who wants to sell trendy but plus-
sized clothes and then wins a trip to Palm Springs where she meets a hot Nigerian doctor. Could happen. Happened to my cousin. I mean, we all think that’s what happened, but we’re not sure because we never found the body. 93 min. (AP) SHE’S THE MAN - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance - A teenage girl poses as her twin brother at a new school. It’s a love octagon with everyone crushing on somebody else, teenage angst, confusion and sexual awkwardness. Amazingly, it might actually be funny. 105 min. (HK) SLITHER - (R) - Horror, Sci-Fi - Something evil is lurking beneath the genteel charm of a small town... (hmm, wonder if it has anything to do with gossiping neighbors?!) Pets start missing, and the rich guy’s acting weird... (Does this movie take place on Maui or what?) As events get more gruesome, the Sheriff and his team resolve to stop the mysterious dark force. (Is it a dark force called “Overdevelopment,” maybe?!) 96 min. (Samantha Campos) STAY ALIVE - (PG13) - Horror, Thiller - There will be no disco dancing in this one. Video game fiends get their paws on a new game that hasn’t been released to the public. Oddly, as gamers die on the screen, they turn up dead in the real world. 85 min. (HK) TAKE THE LEAD - (PG13) - Drama, Biopic - Antonio Banderas plays a ballroom teacher/competitor who volunteers his services to New York inner city high school kids. They know how to work it already, but to hip hop. Caring is sharing, so each will learn the other’s type of dance moves. In doing so, building one of those tearjerking bonds. I’m all choked up already. 108 min. (HK) V FOR VENDETTA - (R) - Sci-Fi, Action, Drama - A masked vigilante (Hugo Weaving) known only as “V” rescues a young woman (Natalie Portman) to join him in a struggle against the force of oppression that is the totalitarian government of the future. 132 min. (SC) WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN - (PG13) - Adventure, Drama - In this biopic, Anthony Hopkins plays Burt Munro, a 68-year old Kiwi and damned fool who rebuilds a 1920s Indian motorcycle into a racer capable of taking on the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. 127 min. (AP)

‘It’s Not About the Booty’ DjBlast, revealed Some of the most popular nights and places for dancing are Wednesday at Casanova and Saturday at Spats. The DJ for both nights, usually wearing baggy pants, glasses and long hair pulled into a ponytail, is DjBlast—a.k.a. Bud Galarita. It all began when he heard “Planet Rock” by Africa Bambaata. He immediately purchased two turntables from a yard sale, spliced them together and started mixing music. He was 11 years old. Growing up in Waihee and Wailuku, most people didn’t really appreciate the new music style that interested him. When he was 15, DjBlast started playing at the Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens in Iao “as loud as possible.” People would see the lights and hear the music and show up thinking there was a party going on. When he was a freshman at Baldwin High in 1986, he was hired to play for the Drama Club Banquet. A few years later, DjBlast flew over to Honolulu to hit the under 21 clubs. “I would shop for records all day,” he said. “Then go dancing all night and catch a flight out. No hotel, nothing.” Since then, he’s played at Maui Brews, Hapa’s Nightclub, Blue Tropix, Casanova, Spats and others. He’s evolved from vinyl to CD and now DVDs, playing new music through the eras. He’s gone from Run DMC and Salt n’ Peppa to Sean Paul and Beyonce. And he never shows up with a set playlist. “I make it up as I go,” said DjBlast. “I know my music so I just feel [the crowd] out. I was playing disco earlier for the older people ‘cause they’re not gonna stay out late anyway. So when I put on this shit they cut out feelin’ like they had a good time.” DjBlast will stop a song short if he sees that it’s clearing the dance floor. To expose listeners to new music, he’ll play stuff that isn’t necessarily top 40. But if the crowd isn’t feelin’ a song, it’s gone (for instance, on the night I went, it was Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”). In the DJ booth doorway, one of DjBlast’s crew, Sean Rosette, blocks the entryway while taking requests. Sometimes the requests can be… intriguing. “It’s not that there are really odd requests,” said Rosette. “It’s more who requests what. Tonight, I had this little white guy come up to me with, ‘Yo yo! Play me some of dat Young Bloodz shit.’” Girls have even offered sex just to hear their song. Now that’s easy listening. But DjBlast insists it’s not about the booty. “[You have] all of these people from different walks of life, different ages, different financial standings forgetting all about their troubles and worries to get together and have a good time,” said DjBlast. His dream is to open an all-ages club that doesn’t sell alcohol. He used to do a teen night at Hapa’s and beams with pride when he talks about all of the young people he met at the time. “Kids see people going out to the bars and think that you have to have alcohol to have a good time,” he said. “If they spend a night out dancing and have a great time, they know that isn’t true.” Thing is, DJ isn’t religious and he’s not a recovering alcoholic. Though at age 15 he got so drunk
Know your DJ that he fell down behind the turntables and passed out. That was all the alcohol experience he needed. “The world moves to the power of music,” he said. “Music will save us all.” For more information on DjBlast, visit www.chilltown.com. MTW

CAERIEL CRESTIN
Pollsters and call-center surveyors would be lost without you guys. You always have an opinion about everything so most of you are thrilled, when asked, to step up to the plate and deliver it. What surprises you, deep down, is when people are shocked, offended or outraged by what you have to say, as if they expected you, all along, to agree with them. Don’t be put off by negative reactions to your ideas this week, Aries. Listen to them and consider them, of course—but don’t let them keep you from speaking your piece. What you’ve got to say matters—not because of its content but because you’re willing to say it, and what that says about you.
“we do all the work . . . so you can enjoy your yard”
TA U R US (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Would you feel validated, betrayed or simply scornful if I suggested that Taureans were astrologically predisposed towards weight gain? Don’t get me wrong—I’ve met my share of skinny Taureans. But generally, many of you guys are blessed with more solid builds. Naturally, genetics matters more than astrology in this case, but a Taurean’s normal predisposition towards luxury, hedonism and sensuality isn’t likely to help your modeling career. I’m not saying give up. We should all keep trying to be the people we hope to be, regardless of obstacles. I’m just suggesting: don’t be so hard on yourself if you fall slightly short.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) In terms of your day-to-day experience at the moment, don’t underestimate the effects of your environment. It’s more powerful than you think. For example, that extra hour of sunlight we got last week made me unquestionably happier, more productive and spontaneous. Your focus on making big changes in your life is well-intentioned but misguided, at the moment. Concentrate on all the little things you can do to make your life—especially regarding your surroundings—better. I believe you’ll find that when you’ve improved all the subtle peripheral stuff in your life, all the big stuff will fall much more easily into place.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Honolua Surf Co. is now hiring:
When it comes time to take a leap of faith, it doesn’t make a bit of difference whether you do it smiling, with wide-open eyes, or screw them shut and scream the whole way down. It’s great if you can work yourself up to a degree of trust and acceptance before you jump, and certainly more fun than taking the plunge while terrified and full of dread. But your attitude is of secondary importance this week. Your memory of the terror will fade, while the pride remains. What matters at the moment is that you actually go for it, because if you don’t do it now, you probably never will—and that, my dear, is something you will certainly always remember, and regret.
Managers, Assistant Managers, Supervisors, Full and Part time Sales
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Everyone’s heard dozens of bizarre conspiracy theories involving yeti, crop circles, illuminati, psychedelic mushroom spores from outer space and so on, but most of us don’t take that shit too seriously, viewing it mostly as intriguing and entertaining, but not life-changing. You, too, are definitely guilty of cultivating your own strange pet theories—about your boss, coworkers, lover, neighbors, etc. But I wouldn’t share them this week (at least not with anyone even remotely involved; you can, however, write me: Caeriel@yahoo.com). It would only get you into trouble—the kind it’s not so easy to squirm out of.
We offer competitive pay, generous employee discount, 401K plan, Medical and Dental insurance, and opportunity for career advancement.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Apply at any of our Maui locations: Front Street, Cannery Mall, Whalers Village, South Kihei, Shops at Wailea Or fax resume to: 667-2875
Virgos have a reputation as the most practical signs in the zodiac but it’s just not true. Yeah, sure, you’re efficient, pragmatic and have more energy than any two other people. But you’re also prone to eccentricities that are more esoteric than truly concrete. Pursuing your more spiritual or idealistic concerns is nothing to scoff at; I’m certainly not going to condemn your veganism, herbal medicine, aggressive yoga routine, or penchant to read astrology columns. But it doesn’t necessarily promote your rep as the no-nonsense workhorse some people think you are. This is, however, a good thing! All work and no weirdness is dull. This week, play up what’s strange about you (tell me: Caeriel@yahoo.com), not what makes you “normal.”
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) This week is all about playing the wait-and-see-game. You might wake up to pouring rain, but assuming the day is shot and canceling all your fantastic plans would be a mistake. If you’re flexible and play it by ear, you’ll discover that the shit weather will probably clear up in a few hours, thus enabling you to continue with a brilliant day—provided you haven’t already screwed it up by calling it off. Chances are that serenely awaiting a change in circumstance will work out better than the original arrangements would have. In other words, be patient. Don’t jump the gun—you’ll only end up shooting yourself in the foot.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Your behavior, at certain points in your life, could be described as saintly. Conversely, you’ve also had your share of equally slutty or otherwise devilish moments. Personally, I think your embrace of these extremes is one of the most interesting things about you but not everyone gets it. Some of those you encounter this week are likely to misunderstand or despise some of your past behavior (you may be surprised at how many privately object to the saintly stuff). However, don’t apologize or otherwise feel pressured to justify yourself. I love your usual takeit-or-leave-it attitude. Don’t change that now. If those asses don’t get it, they’re not worth it.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Bide your time and don’t freak. This week you’re quite likely to encounter some tremendous obstacle, suffer someone’s disapproval, or slam into a seemingly immovable wall. Don’t get upset, though. Keeping your cool and maintaining absolute faith that it will all work out (despite the lack of supporting evidence) is your best move. Losing your shit would mean losing your one shot at detonating the obstacle, securing approval, or shattering the wall. A powerful, unexpected ally (someone you could never solicit, properly anticipate or control) is likely to step in to help you out, but s/he’ll take some time getting around to it, and won’t bother if you’re too busy freaking out to accept the help. Relax. Patience and cool, at the moment, are all you need.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Many people believe they’d love a Capricorn partner—until they actually get one. At that point they’re often disappointed when you don’t meet their unrealistic expectations. You’re a great package but you’re not for everyone. What you can offer: a reasonably high degree of security, sex drive and loyalty, among other things. Where you often fall short: time and attention—those who need tons may feel deprived. This week, cancel your personal PR. Don’t spin this stuff. You are what you are, and you need someone who appreciates that, since you’re not going to fundamentally change. Make sure whoever’s interested gets the entire, honest picture right now or there’ll be hellish drama later.
A Q U A R I U S ( J A N . 20-FEB. 1 8 ) You’re as incorruptible as they come. Aquarians are less likely to be thrown off-course by power, wealth or fame. Having acquired one or more of these, most of you are happy to carry on mostly as before: You hang with the same people, do mostly the same things, and so on. That isn’t to say you’re completely immune to the personality-skewing effects of these influences, just more resistant than most. What does screw you up? Love, of course. You’ll do shit you’d normally never consider just to understand, pursue, or keep love in your life. This week, check that behavior. If a million bucks can’t buy your soul, why should another person be able to (often without even trying)?
P I S C E S ( F E B . 19-MARCH 20) That person who keeps calling your number and not leaving messages… that was me. Well, maybe not me, but it certainly wasn’t the person you were hoping it was. Unfortunately, if you ever get to the bottom of the tantalizing mystery you’re currently facing, you’ll probably be quite disappointed with the anticlimactic results. So, what to do? Decide I’m wrong and carry on with your wishful delusion? Let go of your fantasy altogether? Nah, those options both suck. I suggest just picking up the phone and calling the person you wish would call you. In other words, forget the dissatisfying reality and make your fantasy real.
