What Men Want Wherein we survey males on female fashion Esquire recently ran a feature surveying female glamour magazine employees on what they liked and disliked about men’s fashion. It was thoughtful, provocative and even a little humorous. It was also completely irrelevant. “Men’s fashion”—what the hell is that? For most men—and I know this because I’m a man—the biggest fashion question they’ll face in a week is whether to wear a shirt that has a collar. Far more important is, in my humble opinion, what us guys think of women’s fashion. To find out, I distributed the survey below to a scientifically derived sample of males. Their answers, given in complete anonymity, produced a rich batch of results that were both expected and surprising. Oh, you want to know how many guys I questioned? Oh, a lot… Look, many men generously donated their time to answer these questions—way more than… eight. What do you think this is, Gallup?

“They were part of our ‘ohana and I want to let you know how deeply we appreciate what they did for us as Americans so our way of life could continue.”
What she didn’t say: Actually, I’ve got to commend the good governor for her candor on this one. Where most Republican officials spout nonsense about how our soldiers, sailors and airmen have died “defending” our country, Lingle cut through the spin and said it in plain old-fashioned imperial terms: we’re fighting and our troops are dying to protect our way of life. You people like to drive sport utility vehicles? You people enjoy the highest standard of living in the world? You people are cool with the nation’s wealthiest individuals getting richer at a nearly hourly basis? Well, these things sometimes require us to get out there and fight, and it’s refreshing to see someone like Lingle embrace that logic to its fullest.

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the state official who attended a local high school’s recent anniversary celebration. Okay, we all get it... you’re an important person in the state, and you have a very busy schedule with lots of things to do... certainly not enough time to sit through a whole two-hour pageant. But if you’re such a busy person, maybe you shouldn’t have come at all. That would’ve been better than getting up in the middle of a hula performed by several students and walking directly in front of the stage. You even stopped for a few photo opportunities, directing attention away from the very students who worked so hard over the past few weeks to prepare for the evening’s show. At least have the decency to sit in the back and sneak away during a break in the action, if your time is too precious to make it through the whole performance.

‘Are You Crazy?’ What’s it like to feed the sharks at Maui Ocean Center Jeff Hedlund has always loved fish. He’s been keeping aquariums at home for as long as he can remember. An avid scuba diver, Hedlund graduated from the University of Colorado with degrees in biology and environmental science. In 2002, he went to work at the Maui Ocean Center as a naturalist. A year later, he became of the center’s divers. Now he feeds the sharks. We’re not just talking the relatively docile rays, sandbar, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks that reside in the mammoth 750,000-gallon salt-water aquarium. He also has to contend with the larger, potentially more aggressive grey reef, hammerhead and tiger sharks. Consequently, people ask Hedlund one question repeatedly. “Are you crazy?” “Perhaps,” says Hedlund. But he says the sharks are fed well and are not generally interested in people. Attacks, for all the media attention they get, are still rare. “At first, it was exciting,” he says. “It was exhilarating being bumped by a sandbar shark while cleaning a window about a month after I started working. Now it happens so frequently.” As with most jobs, there are other more mundane aspects Hedlund has to deal with. Every morning, the Center’s divers do a “walk-through,” ensuring that the water, filtration and lighting systems are functioning properly, and checking to see that the various exhibits’ creatures get fed. There’s also exhibit maintenance to conduct— mainly, cleaning walls, dusting, vacuuming and making sure there’s no algae in the delicate environments. Possibly the most important, and least liked task for the divers is the servicing of two filter pipelines that extend 1,500 feet into the ocean outside the harbor. Divers are in charge of spending hours pressure-washing the intake sleeves, as well as vacuuming a concrete-covered pit underwater. “It’s not fun,” says Hedlund. Also, the team sometimes conducts collection dives for exhibits and surveys for the Department of Land and Natural Resources. On alternate days of the week, two staff divers supervise the Center’s “Shark Dive” program, where certified-diver guests pay to have the opportunity for a guaranteed and safe, close encounter of the pelagic kind. And then there’s the feedings. There are four divers on staff, with two to three working each day. The

LC Watch Thousand Dollar Smiles It was last July, not quite 10 at night, when an 18-year-old girl employed by the Maui County Department of Liquor Control walked up to the bar at Milagros Food Company in Paia. “Your name is Dave, right?” the girl asked the bartender, whose name was, in fact, Dave. They chatted briefly. She eventually asked his specialty. He said margaritas. She ordered one. He served her one. The bartender’s mistake—not carding the chatty decoy—landed the popular restaurant before the LC Board of Adjudication on Apr. 6. But from the very beginning, owner Alfred Janneck decided to play things the LC’s way. At the hearing, Janneck and his bartender told the board how his restaurant now cards every single customer who orders alcohol; how his evening host warns customers to have their ID ready if they plan to drink; how employees during the day wear shirts saying “Valid ID Required”; how there are now three signs throughout the restaurant saying the same; how all trainees are indoctrinated in the mandatory ID-checking from the very beginning of their employment; how the restaurant recently carded a 102-year-old woman and Glenn Close; how the restaurant’s policy is so draconian that it costs them an estimated $500 a night in lost business from customers who are obviously of age but forgot to bring their ID to dinner.
Open Ocean Exhibit feedings—or Divelink presentations, as they call them—take about 30 minutes, depending on the audience size and participation. The sharks and rays, as well as the jacks and nearly 2,000 other fish in the tank, are hand-fed a mixture of clams, mussels, anchovies and vitamin-fortified squid from a mesh bag the divers carry. Meanwhile, a Center naturalist is narrating the feeding, taking questions from the audience and relaying back answers from the divers, as they’re feeding and making new friends with the various sea creatures in the tank. “My favorite is the Spotted Eagle Ray,” says Hedlund. “She’s super dynamic, beautiful, personable—interacts with the divers…” “Are you flirting with the Eagle Ray again?” asks Liz Smith, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for Maui Ocean Center. “Yeah, and she smells good, too,” says Hedlund, laughing. “It’s just kinda neat to have a large animal so inquisitive of a person.” But thinking of the future, Hedlund is uncertain where his shark diving experience will take him—or whether this is his
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
career for life. “It’s definitely different from other jobs,” he says. “I don’t know… Oh, look! That tiger shark is going to the bathroom!” Hedlund suddenly points to a murky stream trailing a shark swimming by. In front of it, a completely oblivious family is busy taking a photo. “That’s rare,” he says with awe. Maui Ocean Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $22 for adults; $19 for seniors; $15 for keiki (ages 3-12); free for keiki under three. Ask a naturalist for shark feeding times, as they do vary. For more info, call (808) 270-7000.

Through it all, the board members smiled and nodded, beside themselves with delight. Milagros was listening! Milagros was paying attention! Board member Darren Lopez “commended” Janneck, saying he was “very impressed.” Even Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin said Janneck’s actions were “the most impressive remedial efforts” he’d seen in the six months he’d been trying cases at the LC. The board still fined Janneck $1,000, but they did smile.

Wow, how did Dowling Co. climb so high without me noticing? Of course it’s deserved, but Dowling? Yeah, I suppose so, though he remains one of the most controversial developers on Maui. Years ago grading for his Palauaea project resulted in a pretty massive amount of dirt washing into the ocean. Today he’s building condos for the super-wealthy at Makena. Through it all he’s contributed handsomely to many, many elected officials. Of course, his nonprofit Dowling Community Improvement Foundation has also been making sizeable contributions, which are outlined in an Apr. 15 online Pacific Business News story. Some might say Dowling foundation’s donation of $732,000 last year to a bunch of Maui organizations equals or even outweighs his desire to construct ultra-exclusive homes on Makena land that native Hawaiians feel is sacred. Only the truly powerful enjoy such relativistic advantages. MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, Apr. 19 In a story that could have been headlined “Case silent on plans after upcoming primary loss,” the Honolulu Advertiser revealed today that U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) had something like $868,000 in campaign cash at the end of March compared to upstart primary challenger U.S. Representative Ed Case (D, Also Hawai’i), who raked in a paltry $277,000. Less than $300,000 and it’s already mid April? Ed, get out now buddy while you still can. Don’t you realize you’ve only got five months left to raise money? Five months! Sure, you’re getting some traction now from Time’s recent dubbing of Akaka as one of “America’s Worst Senators,” but sooner or later I’m going to have to mention that Time is owned by AOL/Time Warner, which is itself part-owned by your cousin Steve Case (whoops, guess it was sooner). Anyway, I’ll do what I can to bring it up now and then, but if you should pull in any favors you have now.
THURSDAY, Apr. 20 Though they probably intended it as a call to arms, the Maui Chamber of Commerce sent out an email today to its members publicizing a new resolution sponsored by Maui County Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson that “urges the Administration to temporarily suspend the issuance of building permits for dwellings in agricultural districts.” That’s right, folks, Johnson’s resolution would end the slow but considerable construction of giant “gentleman’s estates” at Launiupoko. Not a mandate—the key word in the two-page document is “urge”—the language in it is nonetheless uncompromising. “[R]esidential subdivisions on agricultural lands typically do not provide monetary contributions to mitigate development impacts, such as money for schools or roadways,” the resolution states. “[E]xpansion of dwellings into agricultural districts continues to reduce Hawai’i’s tropical foods

resources, open space areas, and agricultural irrigation previously used to replenish groundwater aquifers, among other environmental impacts.” With developers raking in so much money at places like Launiupoko, it will be interesting to see how far Johnson’s resolution gets before pro-business groups like the Chamber strangle it to death (by the way, this paper is a Chamber member).
FRIDAY, Apr. 21 And now, like every other publication in the Western World, I’m going to talk about the placenta. For too long, we journalists have been afraid to talk about the placenta, the organ that connects a fetus to its mother and gets expelled at birth. Thankfully, Tom Cruise’s recent “joke” in GQ about his wanting to fry up his newborn baby’s placenta has shattered those prudish conventions. You will find no placenta recipes here, though— you see, when I write about the placenta and/or placenta-related program activities, it’s because it concerns Governor Linda Lingle. Thanks to our good governor, it’s now legal for parents to take both their newborn baby and their afterbirth home with them from the hospital. The reason behind the law—the first in the nation!—is because Native Hawaiian tradition calls for the ceremonial burying of the placenta (‘iewe) beneath a tree, which in this era of HMOs, liability lawsuits and medical waste, is a lot to ask of your local pediatrician. The downside is that couples all over the country are going to be agitating, demanding that their state make it legal for parents to take the placenta home, presumably in something a little more solid than a Styrofoam container.
SATURDAY, Apr. 22 So the Maui County Council said no to hauling drinking water out of the Hamakuapoko Wells yesterday. Too much DBCP pesticide contamination from the old days when Maui Land & Pineapple sprayed the stuff over their crops, you know. Well, they kinda, sorta said no to the well water. According to today’s Maui News, they passed a “resolution”—much like the one on ag lands from Councilwoman Johnson—that says they’re “concerned about the issues

way to celebrate Earth Day is to all get together and denounce the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC). Been reading The Maui News letters section lately? Man, there’s some real hate out there—people writing in saying they’ll never contribute to the MACC again because they’re hosting anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan tonight. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: partially informed kooks are a source of never-ending fun. See, the MACC is just the venue for Sheehan’s talk— but the group that actually sponsored her is the Maui Film Festival. I wonder if people would be lining up to attack War Memorial Stadium if that’s where Sheehan ended up speaking. Attack War Memorial! Get it? What, too soon?

raised in public testimony and has not been convinced of the need to sue the Hamakuapoko Wells for drinking water.” Now while the water in the wells does receive DBCP treatment, residents testifying before the council worried that some contaminants could get through and into the water supply. But seriously, what are the odds of that happening? Possibly the same as, say, the sewage system breaking down in Honolulu and dumping millions of toxic sludge into a nearby boat harbor.
SUNDAY, Apr. 23 It’s Earth Day! And as we all know, the best
Speaking of the war against the war against the war, the Advertiser just reported that two Kaneohe-based Marines, Jason C. Ramseyer and Eric Lueken, are the most recent American soldiers to die in Iraq. They were, in Pentagon-speak, “conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar Province.” This means 2,390 Americans have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. So far, zero weapons of mass destruction have been found, Shiite-on-Sunni violence is killing scores of civilians every day and Baghdad still experiences regular power outages and fuel shortages. The only thing that mystifies me about Sheehan, whose son Casey died in Iraq in November 2003, is that there aren’t more like her.
TUESDAY, Apr. 25 Congressman Case? Supports the war. Senator Akaka? Against. But I’m just saying. Anthony Pignataro’s latest book, Bear Laid Bare: The Unauthorized Biography of Smoky the Bear, is due out this fall. MTW
OVERHEARD... “That’s messed up. It’s not cool to mess with somebody when they’re sleeping. One time at a party I passed out and got teabagged.” -Guy at a Haleakala Gardens party in Kihei, Apr. 20
Leonard Brown, 47, sentenced in 1982 to 99 years in prison in Florida for armed robbery, was released in April after a fellow inmate (having looked over Brown’s records) pointed out to officials that Brown’s sentence was illegally long and that 15 years was the maximum time he could have been kept behind bars. The probable explanation, according to sources cited by The Tampa Tribune, was that Brown’s judge (now deceased) misinterpreted whether Brown was ever armed. Thus, but for the fortuitous discovery of that eagle-eyed inmate, Brown would have spent his entire post-teenage life in prison.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS The Kuwait Times reported in April that food inspectors shut down the Hawally bakery in Kuwait City after finding dough stored in a toilet, which the owner explained was so that the humidity would keep it moist. And Houston police officials started an investigation in March into whether Lt. Joseph Buttitta had sexually harassed a female officer. KPRC-TV reported that the female at first described a consensual relationship that she should have broken off sooner, but then “accidentally” (in a reporter’s word) told Buttitta she loved him when she really meant to say goodbye.
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY Caught by police with illegal emergency lights on his car, Bradenton, Fla., restaurant manager Kenneth Holmes, 26, said at his February sentencing for impersonating a police officer that he did it “to get home quicker,” that the flashers were “cool” and a “fantastic time-saver” that enabled him to drive through red lights. And according to a February police report on the Arizona State University student newspaper’s Web site, an 18-year-old student, arrested
at Hayden Library for masturbating openly while watching Internet porn, explained to police, “To be honest, the Internet connection at my dorm isn’t good enough.”
OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY Michael Oddenino, a lawyer in Arcadia, Calif., filed a lawsuit in March against the coach of his daughter’s high school softball team for $3 million for her emotional distress from the coach’s calling her a “2-yearold” and calling the players in general “idiots” for making insignificant mistakes. A judge rejected it. And in Cardiff, Wales, in March, Sabrina Pace, 26, sued the manager of the car rental firm where she works because, following her breast-augmentation surgery, she couldn’t get the manager to stop paying attention to her breasts.
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENT In February, several patients at an unlicensed mental health facility in Columbus, Ga., told the local Ledger-Enquirer newspaper that they had recently worked security at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta during football games of the University of Georgia and the Atlanta Falcons. Among the facility’s patients are those diagnosed with antisocial personalities or bi-polar disorder or homicidal tendencies.

SHANIA TWAIN IS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE Matt Brownlee, 33, with a long record as a drunk driver, was acquitted of criminal DUI charges in Ottawa, Ontario, after psychiatrists concluded that his latest accident was the result of a sincere belief that singer Shania Twain was helping him drive the car. A 1996 brain injury might have given him a disorder in which he believes that celebrities communicate with him telepathically. And following a hung jury in England’s Winchester Crown Court in April, Linda West faces retrial in the 2005 death of her husband, which she said was accidental, in that her gun slipped while she was energetically performing a Shania Twain number (“Man! I Feel Like a Woman”) in what she described as the couple’s sex game. MTW

Hip Mixed Media The latest trend in high fashion jewelry is internationally inspired. Trade shows combine the looks from Europe, New York and the West making everything accessible, even on Maui. The latest hip look for necklaces in Paris is the layered look but there is no reason we can’t wear it on Maui. Throw together long charm necklaces, with other large pendants hanging on many strands of chain or beads. The key here is to have fun, so anything goes; asymmetrical looks, fabric over beads, chain or wood. Pair it with lace cuffs or big bangles. You will also find costume jewelry inspired by India, Africa and Mexico with a mix of modern ingenuity.

Day Shift Work days can be fashion forward with jewelry influenced by ethnic designs.Think long chains of gold with a mix of wood and glass beads, and beaded chandelier earrings, inspired by exotic islands like Madagascar and the Maldives. Bold colors and pieces accentuate this look. Multiple gold strands and groups of small charms are in. Simple diamond pieces are a classic look; pave rings, round cut diamonds and floating pendant necklaces are on the delicate side of this flattering trend.

Beach Wear Buzz The casual look steals its style from the shore incorporating found objects, shells and coconut into its designs. Multicolored delicate shells in multiple strands and large shell earrings dominate the style. Large stretch shell bracelets complete the look. Multi strand necklines, layers of wood beads, shell chunks, and coconut beads are all important in modern bohemian beach chic.

ONO KINEGRINDS
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
Solid Kine Grindz More than a mere roach coach Hello, I just have a really super, super story for you guys. I don’t know if you’ve heard about it, you may have already got wind of it, but there’s a local boy and a five-star chef—they’ve teamed up and they’ve just opened a lunch wagon and it’s in the K-Mart parking lot in Kahului. And the food is, like, out of this world. It’s like no plate lunch anyone’s ever had. And people are, like, just raving about it. And it’s kind of an unusual team: there is a kid born and raised here and a guy that’s worked in the best of the best restaurants in the country. And they’re doing this cute, cute little wagon with just great, great food: shave ice, local plates. I just thought it would be a hot story for you guys. You should check it out—K-Mart parking lot, Kahului. Later. -Recent anonymous voicemail message

Usually located at the K-Mart parking lot in Kahului, call 283-3206 to make sure. $ We used to call them roach coaches. Big, usually white vans equipped with refrigerators and grills that roll up to construction sites and college campuses selling usually cheap and nearly always terrible hamburgers, ham & egg sandwiches and burritos. Such food wagons seem to epitomize the worst of all possible food choices. “Come on honey, have a burrito,” Peg Bundy tells her sulking husband Al in one episode from the classic white trash sit-com Married With Children. “Aw, come on Al, it’s off a truck.” So you can imagine my delight when I got the above voicemail message
(which I later found out was from the owner’s wife, but no matter). For a food writer, the chance to write about a roach coach that might actually be good is too tempting a challenge to pass. The first time I tried to find the lunch wagon in question—named Solid Kine Grindz, by the way—I was thwarted by a lousy fundraiser that temporarily booted the truck from K-Mart’s lot. But a few days later they were back, and I bravely walked up to the window. Unlike the roach coaches of my youth, this wagon offered a slim menu: just three plate lunches—kalbi ribs, hamburger steak and barbecued chicken—shave ice and canned sodas. The lunches come in two sizes—regular for $7 and mini for $5. I opted for the mini barbecued chicken, and received a tender, delectable, smoky, delicious breast of chicken, a healthy scoop of white rice and a scoop of really good mac salad that went pretty far beyond the usual bland mac salad you find in plate lunches sold in restaurants equipped with things like tables and walls. “We try to change the menu every two days,” owner Mike Lofaro told me later. “That way we offer a variety and everything stays super fresh. We don’t spread ourselves thin doing 10 items.” According to Lofaro, any given menu can include the chicken—“we keep getting people asking for that”—ribs and hamburger as well as teriyaki steak and even Hawaiian hot dogs with all the condiments. A former East Coast chef, Lofaro and his partner Jeff Scida opened Solid Kine Grindz just a few weeks ago. They’re currently open five days a week in the K-Mart parking lot, but that might change soon. “We’re trying to get to Kihei in the beginning of May,” said Lofaro. “That’s where we’re from. We know a lot more people there, and it’s close to a lot of construction sites. We know a lot of those guys.” MTW

Best in Show
Saturday-Sunday, at the Horseshoe Pits in Keopuolani Park, Wailuku [DOG SHOW] If you haven’t yet seen the hilarious mockumentary Best in Show that Christopher Guest (This Is Spinal Tap) directed in 2000 about a national dog show, you really ought to. Of course, you don’t have to see the film in order to enjoy the more than 125 purebred canines and over 50 different breeds that will compete in the Valley Isle Kennel Club Silver Anniversary dog show this weekend. I’m just saying the movie could make your spectator experience a more rewarding one—albeit of the smirking, chuckling, rolling-in-laughter kind. Anyway, this weekend’s event features conformation, obedience and rally trials (dogs must be registered by the American Kennel Club). Groups include sporting, hounds, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting and herding. Hawai’i’s top Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Pugs—basically an array of sizes and styles from Irish Wolfhounds to Chihuahuas. Sigh. I want a dog. For info, call 572-0257 or email braskb001@hawaii.rr.com. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

No GMO Taro
Live Poetry Reading!
Saturday, 9 a.m to 4 p.m. at the University of Hawaii’s Bachman Hall
Thursday, 6:30 p.m. at the Wailuku Public Library; Friday, 7 p.m. at Borders Books & Music in Kahului
[PROTEST] We don’t normally plug events on other islands in these pages, but this one’s a little different. Organizers want people from every Hawaiian island to attend and “bring a stone” to build a platform that will hold the rather provocative carving pictured here. The whole thing’s part of a big fight by taro farmers against the University’s efforts to genetically modify the plant, the cultivation of which made up a key part of traditional Native Hawaiian life and culture. Not only are people worried about the long-term health effects of genetically modifying anything, but native activists are especially incensed that UH is patenting taros and asking farmers to sign licensing agreements. For more information about the fight against GMO taro, call Molokai activist and protest organizer Walter Ritte at (808) 558-0111. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
[POETRY READING] Eric Paul Shaffer is one of the best poets on Maui. He’s written a bunch of poetry books including Portable Planet, Lahaina Noon and Living at the Monastery, Working in the Kitchen. He’s also a charter member of the Ancient Order of the Fire Gigglers, whatever the hell that is. He also spent eight years living on the island of Okinawa for some reason. Oh, and he’s also contributed some very good writing to this publication, and since we’d like that relationship to continue, we’re going to end by saying that you should all go listen to him read some of his best work while it’s still National Poetry Month. [FESTIVAL] I was driving the backside to Hana the other day and enjoying the scenery when I noticed some amazing trees just doused in purple flowers and couldn’t remember what they were called... Oh yeah, Jacaranda, of course! Now I remember. There’s a festival for them, too. It’s the 2nd Annual Jacaranda Festival “Tea Party.” Not only will there be food, jewelry, door prizes and music from the Hula Honeys, there’ll also be some contests. One of which is for the best “Jacaranda Outfit” and the other for “Most Spectacular Hat.” Ever hear that pick-up line? “Baby, you’re ass is so fine I could where it like a hat.” Yeah, don’t do that for the festival. It’s a family affair. [HEIDI KING]

Honokowai Valley Exposed! Let’s Sunday, 5 p.m. at the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel’s Get Kanahele Room Cazi! [DOCUMENTARY] For the past six years, the volunteers that make up Maui Cultural Lands have been working very hard to restore the numerous and varied ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites along the Honokowai Stream in West Maui. The new film Passing the Gift: Malama Honokowai documents these efforts. “This film offers an inspiring view of Hawaiian culture flourishing in our own times,” Hawai’i Sierra Club chairperson Lucienne de Naie has said. “It shows how knowledge of Hawai’i’s past has a gift to offer all of us, Hawaiian or not.” And now you can see the film for free, though seating will be done on a first come, first served basis. For more information on the Honokowai restoration efforts, call 572-8085 or visit www.mauiculturallands.org. This pick ran prematurely in the Apr. 20 issue — sorry! [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Spelling bees make us all nervous
Scrabbling to the Top A spelling bee for the masses The spelling bee documentary hit of 2003 (Spellbound) spawns a heartwarming mainstream drama impaired by its intrusive overscored soundtrack and a lackluster performance by producer/actor Laurence Fishburne as a heavy-hearted English professor. Upstart 11-year-old actress Keke Palmer (The Wool Cap) more than pulls her weight as Akeelah, an underprivileged South Los Angeles schoolgirl with a knack for spelling. Angela Basset makes the most of her limited screen time as Akeelah’s widowed mother Tanya. Writer/director Doug Atchison puts a narrative foot in as many cliché landmines as he sidesteps in tailoring Akeelah And The Bee for young audiences.
Akeelah And The Bee
★★★★★ Rated PG/112 mins.
Akeelah is bullied by her Crenshaw school district peers into masking her intellect until school principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) insists that she participate in an informal spelling bee attended by former spelling champ and college professor Dr. Larabee (Fishburne). Akeelah effortlessly wins the bee only to be personally challenged by Dr. Larabee to spell increasingly difficult words in front of the small crowd of students and faculty. After Akeelah is suitably humiliated by the experience, a personality tug-of-war with Dr. Larabee develops into a sturdy mentor/student alliance. Without her mother’s consent,

Akeelah sets her sights on the regional spelling competition and travels to Beverly Hills to participate in a study group with better prepared kids, when she isn’t receiving private coaching from Dr. Larabee. In Dr. Larabee’s home library/office Akeelah learns about black intellectual leader W.E.B. DuBois and the importance of Latin, Greek and French to understand the root construction of words. Fishburne gives such a muted and onedimensional performance that he nearly topples the movie. As the story unfolds, we learn that Dr. Larabee lost his own daughter Denise to sickness when she was a couple of years younger than Akeelah, and that the loss cost him his marriage. Fishburne keeps his character’s inner turmoil in such a resoundingly hollow-ifwell-defended place that he risks mocking the condition he represents because he telegraphs it so willfully. The only time we see Larabee spring to life is during the director’s gratuitous musicenhanced montage sequences wherein coach and student work together with call-and-response precision. Akeelah becomes something of a South Central celebrity as she goes on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. with her newfound puppy-love spelling competitor Javier (well played by J.R. Villarreal) and her not-so-arch rival Dylan Chiu (Sean Michael Afable). Swelling music and a conscious tugging of the heartstrings add to the final competition’s suspense as the filmmakers consciously err on the side of sentimentality over sentiment. Akeelah And The Bee is a movie that parents should be happy to let their kids go see on their own; they just might start reading the dictionary. MTW

AKEELAH & THE BEE - (PG) - Drama - This is the story of an 11-year-old girl who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Stars Angela Bassett, Keke Palmer and Laurence Fishburne. See Film Critique, p. 26. 112 min. (Samantha Campos) RV - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Family - Robin Williams plays Bob, a work-obsessed guy who tricks his family into giving up their dream vacation to Hawai’i in exchange for a road trip in an RV. Bob only does this to please his boss, but his family doesn’t know that. Confusion, slapstick comedy and the eventual realization that family is what’s really important is inevitable. 98 min. (Heidi King) STICK IT - (PG13) - Comedy - The writer of Bring It On has come up with another movie with a similar concept. A rebel girl that fled the life of gymnastics gets in trouble with the law and is forced to go back to it. It’s a hard knock life. 103 min. (Anthony Pignataro) UNITED 93 - (R) - Drama - This is a dramatization of the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacking and crash of United Airlines Flight 93, as well as a best guess at what occurred on the plane itself. Lee, this heist-that-may-not-be-a-heist picture stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Willem Dafoe. You tell me if it’ll be good. 129 min. (AP) LARRY THE CABLE GUY: HEALTH INSPECTOR (PG13) - Comedy - Larry the Cable Guy stars as the Good Ol’ Boy health inspector in the big city who spends his days frequenting blue-collar restaurants, mixing with regulars and generally perpetuating the redneck stereotype. His routine comes to a screeching halt with the arrival of his new by-the-book partner and a sinister case of food poisonings at one of the most posh restaurants in the city. His reckless methods of investigation appall diners, charms a waitress, and gets him fired, prompting Larry to dust off a fresh bag of “Git-R-Done,” and go undercover to crack the case. Somewhere in Hollywood, a team of chimps thought this was a great idea. 89 min. (WW) LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN - R - Thriller, Crime, Gangster - Josh Hartnett stars as Slevin, the victim of both an unfortunate name as well a case of mistaken identity, who finds himself in the crossfire of two warring New York Crime Bosses known as The Rabbi (Ben Kingsly) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). To further complicate matters, he must also stay one step ahead of the dogged Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and the nefarious assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis). Wackiness ensues. 110 min. (WW) SCARY MOVIE 4 - (PG 13) - Comedy - The fourth installment of the popular horror movie-spoof series… Wait, there was a Scary Movie 3? Really? Who was—ah, forget it. (AP) THE SENTINEL - (PG 13) - Thriller - Think In the Line of Fire meets The Fugitive with a little 24 thrown in, kinda. Michael Douglas plays a veteran Secret Service agent wrongly accused of conspiring the kill the President and Keifer Sutherland plays his protégé charged with bringing him—the wrongfully accused agent, not the President—down, I think. I have a headache. 108 min. (AP) SHE’S THE MAN - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance - A teenage girl poses as her twin brother at a new school. It’s a love octagon with everyone crushing on somebody else, teenage angst, confusion and sexual awkwardness. Amazingly, it might actually be funny. 105 min. (HK) SILENT HILL - (R) - Horror - A little girl does some sleep walking and talks about a place she’s never been. So her mother decides it’ll help the girl if they go to the place, a town called Silent Hill. The girl goes missing and her mom has to go up against the forces of evil. ‘A Way of Life’ Conscious Healing shares their positive island sounds with you His band Conscious Healing was setting up amps for practice when Brad Kahikina started telling me about his group’s philosophy. “You can make music that affects people positively or negatively,” he said, “and reflect it in your music and performance. We choose the light side.”
Conscious Healing Thursday, 10 p.m. at Charley’s; Sunday, at War Memorial Stadium Little League benefit with KPOA.

“Everybody loves music,” said fellow band-mate Curtis Piligrin. “It affects their character, the way they live. It’s important what you listen to and who, ‘cause it can be healing for your body, mind and soul. Conscious Healing is more than just a good name, it’s a way of living—not only through music but to be a way of life, life-giving, a whole vibe.” Kahikina and Piligrin first played music together in the local 10-piece band, Backyard. Later, drummer Stacey Elaban and multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Chris Oana joined. “They just hung around,” said Piligrin. “It was all horns, rhythms and people just singing, looking like they’re playing and not playing anything. This was back in the… ‘60s! No, about eight years ago—mid ‘90s.” “I was a fan who got to play,” said saxophonist Jay Arcangel. The Backyard members went their separate ways. But throughout the years, Piligrin kept playing with Oana and Kahikina. Eventually, Elaban rejoined them. And now, along with Arcangel, a newly formed Conscious Healing also features trumpet player Riley Edwards and trombonist Scott Heintzman in their horn section. Piligrin, Oana and Kahikina do the brunt of the songwriting and sing their own songs, which means switching instruments when they change lead vocals. The band now plays mostly original music, with an occasional Steel Pulse or Katchafire cover. “When we’d play our music and people didn’t know it,” said Kahikina, “we’d see ‘em rockin’ in their seats but they wouldn’t get up until they heard something they knew.” Oana is also the founder of Base-2 Records, the indie label that recorded Conscious Healing’s self-titled debut last year. In addition, as a solo project, Oana recorded the soundtrack to the 2004 Maui-made film, Divers. The band prides itself on the various style elements it incorporates into its islandbased sound. Piligrin cites blues and reggae as his main influences—especially Bob Marley & the Wailing Souls—as well as Hank Williams. Kahikina goes for the classic rock, with The Eagles and Credence Clearwater Revival, as well as country and Hawaiian. Oana likes hip-hop, Ben Harper and especially Stevie Wonder. “Our tastes vary drastically,” said Oana. The rest of the band agrees wholeheartedly with Oana. “I like music as long as it doesn’t suck,” said Arcangel.

Giving praise “Also, C&K, Kalapana and Peter Moon are big influences,” added Piligrin. “They made us want to play.” The band freely admits that spirituality is the biggest part of their sound, and a major aspect of their songwriting. Although in performances, most people don’t notice. The band says they promote “the Lord—meaning Jesus Christ and God,” but they don’t preach. “I wouldn’t call it Christian music,” said Piligrin. “It’s just giving praise.” At the end of summer, Conscious Healing hopes to tour other Hawaiian islands. For now, they’re content to spreading the good vibes here at home. “We know this stuff won’t last forever,” said Kahikina. “So we got to do it the best we can, while we can.” The Conscious Healing sound ranges in tempo and style from one-drop reggae rhythms to faster ska and Latin-Caribbean beats or even to a smooth-as-molasses, slowed-down lovers rock. With the exception of the horn section, all members contribute to vocals and intermittent group call-outs. The result is an energetic, harmonious blending of feel-good sounds. “It’s hard to get a bunch of people—with different attitudes, morals, influences—to come together,” said Piligrin. “When you get the right formula of players, it works—it flows and prospers.” “We’ve been together for two and a half years,” said Kahikina. “Now we’re ready to promote positivity [sic] through our music and songwriting.” “That’s the plan,” said Piligrin. CAERIEL CRESTIN
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re renowned for your stick-to-it-iveness, but don’t confuse determination and persistence with just plain stubbornness. If what you’re doing isn’t working, you may be right in assuming it’s because you haven’t put enough blood, sweat and tears into it yet. But please consider the possibility that it’s simply not the right path for you and will never really work, no matter how long and hard you labor at it. Don’t be afraid to change your course, especially if a seemingly better route (or slightly different destination) presents itself.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Sorry, I keep getting distracted every time I sit down to write your horoscope. It’s almost as if the universe is conspiring to keep me from doing it. Sound familiar? You often let your situation get the best of you, and are kept from being in top form because you’re frazzled, overtired or easily diverted. The difference is, I know I’m in this predicament because of my mind, not because reality is conniving to impair my productivity. Are you really faced with more distractions than the average person, or simply more susceptible to being sidetracked by them? All I know is this: until you decide that your lack of focus is about you and not about your circumstances, nothing about the situation will improve.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Studies show that if you eat less you’ll live longer. Those that consume less than the recommended daily allowance are more likely to have longer, healthier lives. Why, then, does it feel good to overeat? What kind of shitty evolutionary trait is that? Who knows why our bodies can’t catch up with our minds. What I do know is that even though listening to your gut and body are generally good ideas, they can, occasionally, lead you astray. This week, let logic, reason and hardcore evidence sway you, even if they go against your gut instinct, or belly’s rumbling desires.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Leos are more susceptible to flattery than most other signs. Big deal. What are you supposed to do? Not feel good when someone gives you a sincere compliment? You should enjoy it when you receive praise. You have a problem, though, when you start to feel bad ‘cause you don’t get the admiration or tribute you think you deserve. That’s when it’s time for a thicker skin, so you can stop caring quite so much about what others think of you. Is what you’re doing important to you, for its own sake? Whatever the answer, it should be all you need. If it’s not yet, make it so.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Right now, you’re probably (secretly) semi-frantically searching for a new project to fill a recently vacated space in your agenda. However, may I encourage you to hold off on jumping into any new commitments? There’s simply nothing at the moment that’s especially worth your while. Keep yourself as free and available as possible as long as possible, because the right project (or person) lies just over the horizon. It’d be a shame to miss out on that chance because you jumped the gun on something or someone who’s simply not worthy of what you have to offer.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Imagine for a moment being lost and alone on a tropical island. There are no conflicts to mediate, no lovers to please, no expectations to live up to, no other people to react to in any way. How would you act? Would you even know what to do? It seems lately that everything you do is a reaction to someone else in some way. What about who you are really comes from you? This week, check yourself. Notice how much of what you’re doing is because you really and truly, deep down, want to do it, and how much is because someone else wants you to (or you think they do). It’s all right to bend to other people’s desires sometimes. But all the time (or even most of the time)? That’s just not right.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Of all the signs in the zodiac I am perhaps most intrigued and fascinated with you Scorpios. You have the potential to develop into some of the most powerful and intensely alive people around—but it takes time. You usually need many years to ripen into your full power; before that you’re usually charmingly idealistic or sweetly inexperienced. At those times, people can sometimes treat you with something less than the respect (and awe) you know you deserve. Please don’t blame them, though. You know what’s inside you, waiting to come out. This week, seek out the company of those who are able to see and appreciate your potential, even if it hasn’t fully manifested yet.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Darling, you can’t polish a turd. Your attempts to dress up some less-than-impressive chapter of your history are embarrassing and simply not worthy of you. Everyone has screwed up at some point. There’s no need to try to make it look like anything but a mistake you made. Your honesty is one of the main qualities people will admire (and be attracted to) in you, not your supposedly unblemished past. Own the shit you’ve done, both good and bad. The people you want in your life are those who can admire and appreciate a whole person—and that means someone who’s made (and learned from) a lot of mistakes.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I look for people who surprise me. I’m thrilled when someone does something I never would’ve guessed them capable of, or displays some part of themselves that I find shocking. Capricorns, as it turns out, are quite often capable of these kinds of surprises—you just don’t often let us experience them. You have many facets, but your life is so compartmentalized that the people in it generally don’t see more than one (or occasionally, two). Mix it up a little. You might be right in assuming that no one in your life is prepared to enjoy all sides of you, but most of us are ready to experience a few more.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I’ve met many a brilliant Aquarian—some virtual geniuses, even. But most of them are also notoriously impractical. They don’t value doing things the easy way. This isn’t such a bad thing, generally. But when you turn aside from the simplest route to your destination, even when it’s mapped out before you, simply out of principle, you’ve got a problem. Imagine that in this case (and in at least a few others), the easiest way to get where you’re going might actually also be the best way. I know it goes against all your (backwards) instincts but please—at least consider it.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Beware of cliques because they’re going to rule this week, at least from your perspective. Since you’ve never especially been the clique-y sort, you’re apt to feel quite cut off and isolated from these obnoxious little groupings whose main purpose appears to be to fuel your sense of isolation and alienation. What are we going to do with you, dear? I know you’re not much of a joiner, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend the next little bit totally alone. Why not invite people to gather around you? Start your own damn clique. People want to be around you. This week, they just need an excuse.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) This is a dangerous thing to tell an Aries but it’s nevertheless true: It’s not you, it’s them. Yep, it’s just not your problem, darling. There’s nothing wrong with how you are, much as some people don’t like or understand it. Instead of feeling bad about that, you’ve just got to get with some folks who get it and dig it. I’m one, and there are plenty more Ram fans out there. Stop forcing yourself on those who aren’t feeling it, and locate the ones who are not only ready to feel it, they’re desperate to. My Daily Soundtracks Just woke up, hit snooze button three times, need coffee: In A Space Outta Sound (2006), Nightmares on Wax… Funky, soulful downtempo—check out the “Flip Ya Lid” track for an ultra-smooth kickstart. Miss Perfumado (1992, released in U.S. in ’98), Cesaria Evora… Off to a slow morning? Try some slow morna—a rhythmically balladic blend of African blues and Portuguese fado. The Life Aquatic Sessions (2005), Seu Jorge… Acoustic guitar covers of David Bowie hits sung in Portuguese—what could be better? Seriously. Go (1962, remastered in ‘05), Dexter Gordon… Nothing goes better with coffee than this jazz standard. Careless Love (2004), Madeleine Peyroux… It’s modernized retro-torch songs, country ballads, blues and swingtime jazz—and yeah, this chick totally sounds like Billie Holiday. Gotta put in some time at the office, or at home writing: Like the Deserts Miss the Rain, Everything But the Girl… This jazzy techno-folkpop always makes me yearn for San Francisco fog. The Lost Art of the Idle Moment (2005), Carmen Rizzo… Hypnotic chill-out with non-distracting vocals. Mule Variations (1999), Tom Waits… I find Waits’ gravelly voice and eclectic use of industrial instruments to be wholly inspiring—kind of reinvigorates the rebellious geeky art chick in me. Feeling a little saucy—in the mood for love but no one’s around… hmm… where’s my batteries? Black Cherry (2003), Goldfrapp… A sexy, dance floor and downtempo electro treasure! When Alison Goldfrapp sings, “Put your dirty angel face between my legs and knicker lace” on “Twist” and simply moans through the largely instrumental slinker “Slippage,” I swoon. See also Massive Attack’s Mezzanine (1998) and Tricky’s Maxinquaye (1995) for more self-pleasuring electronica. With Teeth (2005), Nine Inch Nails… All that deep, dark brooding and pent-up rage Trent Reznor breathily scream-emotes really does something to me. For similar reasons, see also Deftones’ Deftones (2003) and Tool’s Undertow (1993).

Went out to get groceries looking haggard, ran into an ex—with his new girlfriend 4-Track Demos (1993), PJ Harvey… I live vicariously through Harvey’s angst-ridden, raw, razor-sharp wailings-that-rock. Grrrr! So Jealous (2004), Tegan and Sara… Who better than indie rock identical twin sisters who sound like the lesbian love children of Sinead O’Connor and Joan Jett to carry me through this torment? She Hangs Brightly (1991), Mazzy Star… A melancholy, dark folksy classic. Sea Change (2002), Beck… I almost just can’t listen to this one, it’s so depressing—especially with songs like “Lost Cause,” “Lonesome Tears,” “Already Dead” and “Nothing I Haven’t Seen.” But sometimes, this bitter medicine is just what the Love Doctor ordered. Got bored with being depressed, had a glass of wine, and am now dancing around my living room in very unsexy underwear Playing the Angel (2005), Depeche Mode… Actually, I’m obsessed with this one by the industrial ‘80s new wave gods. Supernature (2005), Goldfrapp… Synthesized disco for sequined hipsters. Times of Romance (2005), The Lovemakers… Sexy dance-pop with a sense of humor, from the Bay Area. Brazilian Girls (2005), Brazilian Girls… Playful, seductive trip-hop. This Island (2004), Le Tigre… I can’t help but do the pogo to Kathleen Hanna’s electro-pop punk cover of the Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited.” All that excitement is making me sleepy… Jazz for Lovers (1999), Various Artists… I’ll admit to putting Gene Ammons’ sultry sax-drenched “Someone to Watch Over Me” on continuous play, but after I get over that, by the time Clark Terry’s “Lullaby” kicks in, I’m counting zzz’s. Mozart at Midnight (1994)… It’s definitely soothing night music but I can’t help but wonder if there’s any validity to the theory that listening to Mozart’s music actually makes us smarter. If it does, it’s apparently only working in my dreams. Instrumental Peace (2002), Barry Flanagan… For some reason, this one lulls me to dream of waterfalls and lush tropical rainforests—so I always make sure my bladder is empty before dozing off to this one. For Your Dreams (2002), Various Artists… This is a romantic, classical mix featuring my favorite operatic piece composed by Leo Delibes. Greatest Hits of the Kali Yoga (2004), Krishna Das… The only non-instrumental album in the bunch is probably one of my guiltier pleasures; I may hesitate to tell my friends, but this album of Indian devotional chanting soothes the savage beast in my soul.
