HARPING ABOUT HARPER Seriously. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, but I hope to God that lame interview with Ben Harper was NOT the interview of her life (“Ben Harper: The interview of my life,” Apr. 13, 2006). That was an amazing opportunity, and it was unfortunately squandered. I picked up Maui Time today, anticipating something great—a Maui Time exclusive interview with my favorite musician and the heroine HoloHolo Girl!

I prepared to get psyched for the concert next week. I hoped I would learn something new about Ben Harper, or the Kokua Fest and I was sadly disappointed on all fronts. I was also bummed by the Elvis Costello non-interview a few weeks ago. If you continue to publish crappy “interviews” like that, publicists will stop returning your phone calls. I usually love your paper, and I am underwhelmed by the standards you are setting these days. Ask some interesting questions, get some interesting answers, remember what they were, and then PUBLISH it—I’m begging you! -Vanessa and Sam Ghantous, via email I really enjoyed your article about Ben Harper. I hope you were able to go to the Kokua Festival yesterday. I’m sure it was great. I recently met Ben in Jacksonville, Florida after his show. Leading up to meeting him, I saw the first-graders at my child’s school singing “With My Own Two Hands.” He is my favorite musician and I thought he should see it. It was filmed and I acquired a copy. Anyway, he found out about it from a radio station and he called me. I related to how you felt in every way. Unfortunately, I was not expecting his call and I was not home. So, he left a nice message (which is forever saved). I got to give him the DVD in Florida and he is very polite and engaging. But, like you describe it was overwhelming and I was more star-struck than I had anticipated. So, your words were a welcome relief to me because I was absolutely blank. I could not even come with one good thing to talk about. I do pray that I can meet him again soon and be better prepared. -Laura Bay, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in an Apr. 26, 2006 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story about a potential influenza pandemic in Hawai’i: “It is important for people to understand what they can do, what they should be doing.”

What she didn’t say: Leaving aside the fact that Lingle’s quote could be used for nearly any emergency or even non-emergency situation, it’s difficult to say what exactly she means here. An influenza pandemic means that millions of people everywhere contract a deadly disease and die. There’s not much any of us can or will do, since the very fact that there’s a pandemic means federal and state officials failed to distribute an effective influenza vaccine in time. Though the same Star-Bulletin article that includes Lingle’s statement has such helpful tips as not going out or kissing people during the pandemic, to cut down on germ transmission and so forth.

I thought the point of your article was fair (“When the Cure is Worse than the Disease,” Apr. 20, 2006). If consumers demand that a product be changed so as to be more reassuring to them the free market should respond in kind. It’s ironic that regulation would be necessary for this to happen especially after your use of The Journal of American Physicians as a reference. The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is the official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, which is not a medical or science research organization but is a political advocacy group made up of doctors and lawyers and other free market limited government advocates. Strange then that we should use your article as information to organize others to then require our state to regulate the vaccines that they purchase for public health programs based partially on data offered by a Libertarian organization that would really prefer that regulation and public health programs didn’t exist in the first place. I realize you reference many other reputable associations but the use of a JofAPS as a reference clouds the inferences you offer up during other parts of your story. -Darrel Smith, Kihei

ehbrah@mauitime.com Thanks Brah. Your olfactory abomination really made my night. See, I was excited to go fishing after working all day, and really wanted to try out my brand new $150 ulua setup. So I cast out my live bait and put my pole into the PVC holder. No fish, but I did catch a beautiful sunset and a wiff of your pungent, rotting urine that you’d so helpfully pissed into the PVC fishing pole holder. It soaked into my grip and onto my hands. I gagged liked I was wearing a baby diaper for a gas mask. You’re probably the guy that also let his plastic bags float in the ocean and drops cigarette butts in the sand. Why Maui’s environmentalists need a home On Maui, people who want to raise awareness of environmental issues like clean air, sewage dumping or invasive species are often locked into a kind of traveling road show. They’re just citizens with day jobs. Usually their only hope of connecting with people face to face requires them to haul stacks of flyers and tables with folding legs to Earth Day celebrations and the Maui County Fair. Rob Parsons, Maui’s Environmental Coordinator, wants to change that. He wants to turn a vacant beach house that belongs to the county into the Maui County Environmental Resource Center (MCERC). “This could be a permanent place for Maui’s environmental organizations to house their information and host public workshops,” he said. “This could become a central location where visitors, residents and students could go to learn about environmental issues and organizations and learn how to get involved.” Maui County acquired the 2,250 square-foot house, located on one-anda-half acres along Baldwin Beach in Paia, in August 2005 as part of a legal settlement agreement with the previous owners over improperly issued permits. The terms of the $4.58 million settlement require that the county utilize the property only for public purposes.

offices or meeting places.” At the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens Earth Day celebration in Kahului, Alex Michailidis said the putting the MCERC in Paia would be “ideal. “Visitors want to learn about the place they visit, they want to contribute,” he said. “This facility will show them the importance of Maui’s environment and how these groups are working to protect it.”

Kokua Clean Up Day On May 6 volunteers will help clean up the site of the proposed MCERC. For more information, call Rob Parsons at 270-7960 or email him at rob.parsons@co.maui.hi.us. Parsons said the administration first wants to get the property’s zoning changed from “Urban Reserve” to “Park.” Community centers like the one he’s described are legal in areas zoned for Park. He envisions a community resource center similar to visitor centers found in the mainland and the National Parks. He believes this facility could become the focal point for the proposed North Shore Regional Park. Local environmentalists agree. “The MCERC would be a dream come true to homeless non-profits such as Hawai’i Wildlife Fund,” said Maui Research Coordinator Cheryl King. King spearheads HWF’s Hawksbill Recovery Project. “There are so many grass-roots organizations on Maui that barely get by with the help of volunteers and the occasional donation, and that don’t have central

Joe Bertram of Greenways Maui sees it as an ideal way to reach children. “An environmental resource center would be a new venue to get our messages out to a greater audience,” he said. “It could help our keiki learn about the importance of environmentally friendly, pedestrian-orientated communities.” Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairmen Peter Young supports developing environmental education centers and expanding environmental education programs across the state. He included a request for $1-million in the DLNR budget to enhance environmental education programs. “Environmental education, and the importance of understanding our individual and collective responsibility to protect the world around us, needs to start at the earliest possible moment, at the earliest grade levels, as well as through continued education as we grow and age,” Young

said. “Although the legislative session is not over, it does not appear that we will get the $1 million this year.” Parsons is asking the county for $150,000 to support the MCERC. Two thirds of that would cover repair, maintenance and upgrades to the vacant building and property, while $50,000 would provide a conceptual design and study for using the building as an environmental resource center. So far, council members aren’t going along with Parsons. “If Hawai’i’s environment is our economy, why does the environment always get the leftovers in the budget?” Parsons asked. “The environment always is an afterthought when it should be the focus in planning and budgeting—especially during this booming real estate and construction economy. We cannot lose sight of the environment. I don’t think asking for $150,000 out of a $467 million budget to be used for environmental education and protection is unreasonable.” MTW

For a Maui County Prosecuting Attorney, there can’t be many cushier assignments than arguing cases before the Liquor Control Adjudication Board. You only have to go to court one day a month, and you’re rarely there for more than five hours. Most of the time licensees plead no contest so they can face reduced charges, which means you only need to make opening and closing statements and don’t need to concern yourself with q u e s t i o n i n g o r c r o s s - e x a m i n i n g w i tnesses. Oh, and no contest pleas still end up as guilty verdicts so they get recorded as convictions on your record. When you do have to face a licensee who’s pleading not guilty, a lot of times they lack the money to retain legal counsel. So they end up representing themselves, and that’s always going to be a poor match against your law degree and license. Also, Adjudication Board “trials” aren’t really trials, since it’s not a criminal or even civil matter requiring a judge or jury. The Rules of Evidence don’t apply, so you can admit hearsay as evidence. You don’t have to face a legal-savvy judge or a jury, but a panel of political appointees who are mostly retired and demonstrate little or no working knowledge of the liquor establishments and industry. As such, you get to make wide and sweeping generalizations like “The licensee is responsible for every one in the premises,” after which the board members will slowly nod their heads in complete agreement. For some reason, deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin is giving all that up. After just six months prosecuting licensees at the LC, he said at the Apr. 6, 2006 he aring that he was moving on. His replacement, Jeffrey Temas, sat next to him during the hearing to get a feel for the place. “So we’re probably not going to be losing any more cases,” Silva joked at the hearing, referring to M a rt i n ’s sole loss before the board—the Dec. 1, 2005 hearing in which the b o a r d a c q u i t t e d L a h a i n a ’s M o o s e M c G i l l y c u d d y ’s on three counts related t o o v e r-service. Looking back, that joke was about the hardest t h i n g M a r tin had to face.

Landowner and developer Alexander & Baldwin moves up a few notches this week on news that it’s secured $400 million in financing from Prudential Financial to help it pay for upcoming development projects. That’s quite an amount, though the company isn’t getting it all right now. According to the Apr. 22 Honolulu Advertiser, A&B plans to start small, taking out just $125 million this December at a 5.5 percent interest rate, which it can pay back in 10 years. MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, Apr. 26 So the state Senate is thinking about repealing the gasoline price cap. Whoop-de-fucking-do. Oh, but it would allow the governor to bring back the cap should prices get “too high.” Too high?! Gas prices are too high right now! Or are we supposed to wait until they reach $4 a gallon? How about $5 a gallon? Why do you think the state Legislature passed the cap in the first place? Hell, they’ve been too high for the last five years. Which reminds me: oil’s selling for $75 a barrel right now. What happens if President George W. Bush loses what’s left of his mind and starts bombing Iran? Even if he doesn’t drop any nuclear bunker-busters, an attack like that will set fire to the entire Persian Gulf. The whole world will be in a world of hurt then. And another thing—this “It gives them a way to be able to seek relief from the governor” line state Senator Ron Menor (D, 17th District) is spouting won’t fly. The governor is now and will likely be for the next four years Linda Lingle, a longtime friend of the oil industry and an avowed opponent of all things gas cap. You think she’s going to step in and impose price controls?

THURSDAY, Apr. 27 Three weeks ago I reported in this very column that Mana Means Advertising & Public Relations had contacted me on behalf of a mysterious candidate they refused to name who was considering running for Ed Case’s soon-to-be-vacated 2nd District congressional seat. But now, dear readers, thanks to my ingenious investigative skills, I can reveal to you the name of that individual. And I will, eventually, but first I wanted to explain the subtle nuances and cleverness that went into my finding out the name of the candidate in the first place. See, the good folks at Mana Means Advertising & Public Relations are cagey—they know how to get the word out, but they also know how to make sure the word doesn’t get out too soon. The trick—which I

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

discovered and foiled today—lay in their first call to me three weeks ago, when they asked if it was better for them to send email or fax press releases. Initially thinking nothing of it, I said email and assumed—a potentially huge miscalculation on my part—that they’d alert me to the candidate’s identity in an email. But that was what they wanted me to think! Sure enough, day after day, I checked my email and never saw word one from Mana Means. Until today, that is, when I got my daily selection of snail mail. It was the usual mix of angry letters, press releases from Wisconsin and other junk. I was going to toss it all like I normally do when a large envelope bearing a Mana Means return address caught my eye. And that’s when it hit me: that whole email line of inquiry was a ruse to throw me off the scent! The mystery candidate’s identity was here, in this very envelope! Making sure no one was looking, I then opened the envelope. Using a technique mastered by investigators Bob Woodward, Sy Hersh and Jack Anderson long ago, I poured the envelope’s papers onto my desk. Then I began to read the papers. “Quentin Kawananakoa announces candidacy for United States 2nd Congressional District,” announced one press release. It was a brilliant coup, I don’t mind saying myself—one I’m sure even Quentin Kawananakoa, whoever the hell he is, would salute.

FRIDAY, Apr. 28 Looks like Ma’alaea Harbor is finally going to get a proper sewage pump-out station, thanks to—you guessed it— Governor Lingle. Of course I’m kidding—all Lingle did was release $1.1 million in state money to the harbor, $350,000 of which will go to pump-out facility. And while I applaud the good governor’s actions, I find it hard— okay, absolutely impossible—to believe that she would have spent all that money on little Ma’alaea Harbor were it not for the many Pump-Don’t-Dump activists who continue to make a stink over the commercial boats that continue to this day to dump raw sewage into the waters just off Maui. And yeah, that pun was very much intended.

SATURDAY, Apr. 29 Mmm… sunny.

SUNDAY, Apr. 30 So the Associated Press is reporting today that the state’s gas cap is just about dead. And Republican legislators are beside themselves with glee. “The rescission of the gas cap is a huge victory for consumers,” Senate Minority Leader Fred Hemmings (R, 25th District) told the news agency. “Now we can focus on making oil obsolete by diversifying our energy consumption

You know what, I forgot about those magical hydrogen cars Republican officials keep saying will save us all. And they’ll be wonderful, too, when they finally start selling them in a decade or two. In the meantime, working people who have to drive because Maui lacks comprehensive bus service are screwed.

with renewable and other alternative energy sources.” Okay, let me take that in stages. Victory for consumers? Really? Oil’s looking to top $100 a barrel. Does Hemmings seriously think throwing the state on the mercy of the commodities market will drive down prices at the pump? As far as the “alternative energy sources” are concerned, do you think we’re all stupid? We’ve been hearing about the glories of alternative fuels and vehicles since the 1970s. Except for biodiesel, which Republicans did nothing to help bring about, where the hell is the stuff? Remember those electric cars from GM that came out in the mid-1990s and vanished in the late 1990s because the auto giant never wanted to sell them in the first place? I miss those little cars.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD ROACH BROOCH Salt Lake City fashion designer Jared Gold recently began offering jeweled brooches featuring brightly colored Swarovski crystals affixed to a live, three-inch-long Madagascar hissing cockroach that a woman can allow to roam a short distance around her dress or jacket via a silver chain affixed to the roach’s back. The brooch sells for $80 at Gold’s Web site. An April New York Post story quoted an animal-rights spokesman as calling the bauble “just the gift” for the “person who doesn’t mind a small animal excreting on them throughout the day.”

JUST PLAIN STUPID Teachers at several nursery schools in Oxfordshire, England, have been encouraging kids to learn the verse “Baa, baa, black sheep/Have you any wool?” without the word “black,” but in its place a variety of emotions (e.g., “Baa, baa, sad sheep”) or colors (including “Baa, baa, rainbow sheep”) because they believe that kids with black skin might feel disrespected. According to a March Cox News Service dispatch from London, the campaign seems of a piece with a UK media flurry in 2003 suggesting changing the ending to Humpty Dumpty so that he receives merely a mild bump instead of shattering.

DEFINITELY NOT CRIPPLED In March, on state Highway 2 near Papamoa, New Zealand, police stopped a 32-year-old man driving 121 km/hr (75 mph), with no license and also no arms, having kept relatively good control with one foot on the gas and the other on the steering wheel. He told officers he had been

It happened at the worst possible time. MidOctober, 2005 was supposed to be a time of celebration for Pacific Biodiesel. The Kahului-based, environmentally friendly refiner had just won a coveted BlueSky Award. Sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the International Technology Promotion Center for Sustainable Development in Shenzen, China, the award encourages renewable energy research in developing countries. “All the experts were very receptive to our process of recycling used cooking oil into biodiesel,” Pacific Biodiesel Marketing and Communications Director Kelly King—wife of company president Robert King— said in a company press release. “Most of them could see the application as beneficial to China as well as their own countries.” Back home, things were very different. At roughly the same time Chinese officials were congratulating the Kings in Shenzen, mechanics working for the County of Maui’s Public Works department were staging a revolt against the very fuel so many were honoring around the world. The County of Maui had been using Pacific Biodiesel’s B20 blend—20 percent biodiesel, 80 percent regular diesel—since the late 1990s. But for much of October and November 2005, county Public Works mechanics stopped pouring biodiesel into about 200 county trucks and vehicles. “None of our garage personnel care for biodiesel,” said a county official familiar with the mechanic’s revolt. “We had a lot of problems with it. [Using biodiesel] was something that came from higher up. [The mechanics] were kinda pushed into it.” The official said mechanics were repeatedly cleaning and replacing clogged fuel lines, injection pumps and even fuel tanks. It added up to thousands of dollars in maintenance to a variety of vehicles that the official insisted never had to be done when petroleum-based diesel fuel was running through the engines. “There was rubber deterioration,” the official said. “Gelling, too. And rapid growth of algae [in the tanks],

clogged filters and fuel tanks. They had to remove the fuel tanks to remove the gel on the bottom. You could clean it, but they just replaced the tanks. Biodiesel doesn’t like to sit. It separates. No one ever warned us about separation.” According to the official and county memoranda, county public works officials weren’t happy with the revolt. “It has come to my attention that the use of B20 fuel… has been discontinued within the County’s fleet of vehicles which fill up at Public Works’ baseyards,” Public Works and Environmental Management Director Milton M. Arakawa wrote to Highways Division Chief Brian Hashiro on Nov. 14, 2005. “Although I understand that B20 has been suspected of causing problems with fuel line coagulation and injector clogging, I have not been able to confirm such problems are caused by the direct use of B20… You are hereby directed to resume use of B20 fuel at the Wailuku Baseyard, subject to its availability.” Public Works mechanics were soon pumping Pacific Biodiesel B20 again. The official familiar with the revolt—who requested anonymity, fearing his job would be in jeopardy if he spoke out publicly—said baseyard mechanics haven’t dealt with any fuel system problems since. “It seems like they [Pacific Biodiesel] had some bad stuff coming through,” the official familiar with the mechanics revolt said. “Biodiesel has not been, from what I gather, thoroughly researched. It hasn’t had enough time on the road. In Europe, there are crops grown for the fuel. It’s clean. But here, they’re using waste oil. You get all kinds of stuff in there.” It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Bob King founded Pacific Biodiesel in 1996 to provide the island—indeed, the whole Pacific Rim—a steady source of inexpensive, recycled fuel that wouldn’t produce anything like the emissions that come from petroleum-based diesel fuel. “We’re not going to get rich,” he told The Maui News at the time. “But it will pay for itself.”

Since then King has built a biodiesel plant in Honolulu; partnered with a Nagano, Japan-based Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise to turn grease into biodiesel; opened plants in Virginia, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania; and partnered with Willie Nelson to build another plant in Carl’s Corner, Texas. In April 2005, President George W. Bush honored Pacific Biodiesel with a visit to the company’s Virginia refinery. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel—a mix of regular petroleum-based diesel fuel and some sort of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), usually derived from corn, canola, sugar or, in the case of Pacific Biodiesel’s Maui operation, used cooking oil from restaurants. There are a variety of blends, ranging from B2 and B5—two and five percent bio-substitutes, respectively—to B20 and even B100, which is 100 percent FAME. The advantages are plentiful and include lower cost than petroleum-based diesel fuel and much lower emissions. At press time, a gallon of biodiesel sold at Pacific Biodiesel’s Kahului refinery costs $2.84, while petroleum-based diesel elsewhere on the island costs $3.92. The automotive industry seems to be embracing biodiesel, though in a tentative way. For instance, Jeep introduced its 2005 Liberty as biodiesel-ready, though the company recommended drivers not use a richer blend than B5, which has so little actual biodiesel in it that government standards consider it merely an additive. But what about the county mechanics? They rebelled against the fuel at precisely the time Pacific Biodiesel was getting global publicity. What was going on? “The mechanics never wanted to run biodiesel in the first place,” King said. “When they started having ‘troubles’ I asked them what they were. A guy at one of the baseyards said there was an old truck with goop in the tank. I offered to take a look, but he said they’d already cleaned it out. What stuff were they seeing? I couldn’t find anything.” King may not have been able to find anything, but county memoranda reviewed by Maui Time listed a half dozen separated incidents of Public Works trucks

requiring fuel system repairs—problems the mechanics insisted never occurred when the vehicles were using petroleum diesel. A U.S. Department of Energy paper titled Biodiesel Performance, Costs, and Use, written by Anthony Radich, briefly touches on the fuel’s potential to cause engine clogs. “The initial use of B20 or B100 in any vehicle or machine requires care,” Radich wrote. “Petroleum diesel forms deposits in vehicular fuel systems, and because biodiesel can loosen those deposits, they can migrate and clog fuel lines and filters.” In June 2004, five European fuel injector manufacturers—Delphi, Bosch, Siemens VDO, Denso and Stanadyne—signed a “Common Position Statement” on biofuels. The document makes clear that biodiesel carries with it potential problems— especially if a vehicle sits for a period of time. “Tests have shown that fuel deterioration can take place in the fuel supply and in the vehicle fuel system,” read the statement. “Fuel ageing is accelerated in the presence of heat, oxygen, water, metal ions and other impurities. The products of oxidative ageing have been shown to be corrosive… Aged or poor quality FAME contains organic acids like formic and acetic acids and acids of higher molecular weight as well as polymerization products which attack many components, drastically reducing the service life of the FIE [fuel injection equipment].” For that reason, King recommended that the County of Maui not pour biodiesel into its emergency generators or anything else that doesn’t run for an extended period of time. “Biodiesel is three to five times more stable than regular diesel—in the lab,” King said. “But in the field, if you store it in plastic or certain steel tanks, it could have a problem and degrade in the tank.” But there’s also evidence that biodiesel might have caused problems in engines that ran constantly. Recently, Kahului-based SpeediShuttle complained to Pacific Biodiesel of power losses associated with its B100 use. According to owner Cecil Morton, his company ran 10 Mercedes Benz Sprinters on B100 approximately 200,000 miles in just a few months. “I’m just disappointed,” said Morton. “I really wanted to contribute to the environment,” he said. “It was cost effective, but we experienced loss of power and water in the fuel.” Though King and his wife insisted that they always warn new customers of potential issues—they showed me a couple checklists they said they give customers warning them to regularly clean fuel filters, keep the fuel tank full to avoid condensation and avoid cold starts and stops—Morton said no one at Pacific Biodiesel ever warned him about potential power losses caused by water condensing in the tank. In response, King said that water condensation in the tank is a concern, but added that he hasn’t seen anything so serious that it would cause engine problems. “Biodiesel will absorb moisture out of the air,” King said. “We’ve been doing this a long time. Are we accumulating water in the tank? I opened a lot of tanks [to see]. The Volkswagen that had the most water had a quarter of a teaspoon. That was a B20 customer. I’ve found no water in the B100.” Despite his problems, Morton said he wants his

vehicles to burn a clean, environmentally friendly fuel. He also wants to go back to using biodiesel. “King would like to bring me back on,” Morton said. “I’m just waiting for him to move forward.” By no means does everyone who uses biodiesel experience trouble. King said he’s got about 500 customers, and only “a couple” have complained to him of trouble. Shaun Stenshol, who runs the BioBeetle car rental agency (which distributes Maui Time Weekly issues) and Maui Recycling Service, both of which use biodiesel, was effusive in praise for the fuel. “BioBeetle has never had an issue,” he said. “On Maui we have 12 cars—four Beetles, five Golfs, two Jettas and the Jeep Liberty. B100 is all they run on. We only use biodiesel, and there are no issues.” But Stenshol said a couple of his Maui Recycling trucks have had problems. His 2004 Ford truck had to have all eight of its fuel injectors replaced on three separate occasions. Stenshol said the truck in question has had engine concerns, but Ford blamed the problems on biodiesel. “Ford refused to tell me how biodiesel caused that problem,” Stenshol said. “If it caused a problem, they should know how it caused a problem. But they just said no.” Stenshol added that Maui Recycling’s 1989 Isuzu truck also needed new fuel lines, but he said he expected that because of the vehicle’s age. “Some of the older vehicles have fuel lines that aren’t compatible,” said King. “Some new vehicles, too. Certain types of rubber aren’t compatible with vegetable-based products.” King’s wife Kelly, who handles Pacific Biodiesel’s marketing, said the company sells biodieselcompatible hoses to customers for $2 a foot. Many customers, Bob King said, simply don’t realize that diesel engines—even one that consumes petroleum-based fuel—are different than gasoline engines. For instance, he said customers are sometimes surprised to learn that changing fuel filters is a regular requirement. “In the diesel business, we change fuel filters every time we change the oil,” King said. “I’m recommending changing the filter no more than every 10,000 miles. It kind of depends on the service of the vehicle.” Kelly King added that the company has recently started hosting regular “TDI Days,” when customers can come in and learn about maintenance like replacing filter changes and reading diagnostic codes. Microbial growth, another complaint county Public Works mechanics used to justify their revolt, is another problem apparently universal to diesel fuels. “It’s really bacteria and fungus, not algae,” said King. “You kill it in the factory, then it grows in the tank farm. We use biocide, then they get immune. They’re very hearty bugs.” King said his company is considering putting a microbe-killing biocide in the fuel, but hasn’t come to a conclusion yet. “We’ve been testing and we’re not comfortable with the results,” he said. “Often it can cause more problems than it solves.” King added that in the early days, biodiesel was free of microbial growth, but acknowledged that the “free time is over now.” He said he lacked sufficient data to say whether biodiesel supported more bacterial

growth than petroleum-based fuel. Alleged problems don’t seem confined to Maui. Minnesota was the first U.S. state to pass a law requiring B2 biodiesel. But fuel system clogs there became so bad in late 2005 that state officials stopped fueling with biodiesel for three weeks so the provider could find out what was wrong. Fuel suppliers blamed the bitter cold weather, but when they were done, investigators concluded that “off-spec” biodiesel was at least partially the culprit. “Although investigations have indicated that other factors unrelated to biodiesel may have led to at least some of the filter plugging reports in Minnesota, there’s no question that off-spec biodiesel can have a severe reaction in cold weather, even in low blends,” National Biodiesel Board (NBB) Technical Director Steve Howell said in a NBB press release. “There’s no room for poor quality biodiesel in the marketplace.” The issue of how to achieve high quality biodiesel is far from resolved. In the June 2004 Common Position Statement from the five European fuel injector manufacturers, meeting fuel quality standards was so important they put it in bold letters: “In order to reduce the risk of premature failure of the fuel system, FAME must conform to EN 14214 [a European biofuel standard].” In the U.S., the NBB has long asked that all biodiesel manufacturers achieve BQ-9000 accreditation. Not quite an industry standard—few manufacturers actually adhere to it—BQ 9000 is nonetheless the only current standard in the American biodiesel industry. To achieve it, a manufacturer’s fuel must meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D 6751 standard—not a guarantee there will be no problems, but certainly a way to bring better quality fuel to consumers. Indeed, while many engine manufacturers refuse to honor warranties if customers choose to start filling their tanks with biodiesel, many have agreed that B20 fuel meeting the ASTM D 6751 standard won’t void a warranty. “An ASTM standard is not easily achieved,” says NBB press materials. “Some standards can take over 10 years to gain agreement and be issued by ASTM… ASTM fuel standards are the minimum accepted values for properties of the fuel to provide adequate customer satisfaction and/or protection.” Pacific Biodiesel is not BQ 9000 accredited. When asked why, King said his company regularly sends fuel samples to a private lab for testing. He also criticized BQ 9000 itself. “I don’t think BQ 9000 is a good program,” he said. “The problem is you pay money, get accreditation and test. There are six to eight tests, which can be done in as little as a week, and then you don’t have to test again for two years. You could change the feedstock and not have to test.” King insisted that he’s looking into coming up with his own fuel quality standard. But he couldn’t say when that would happen. “It’s so frustrating,” said King of the complaints he hears. “It’s just driving me up the wall. One [customer] said the car was giving problems. The problem was he hadn’t driven it in six months. All in all, I’ve got to say we’re having extremely good luck with this fuel.” MTW

Authentic Mexican Food

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

When I was in middle school, I had a best friend named Concha Hernandez. She and her four siblings spoke only Spanish to their parents, who were immigrants from Mexico and spoke no English. Visiting her was an awesome experience. I got to brush up on my Spanish, see a little bit of their culture and enjoy authentic Mexican food on a regular basis. I had always been fond of Mexican food when I was growing up, but this was the point in my life when I came to love it.

feel the pounds shedding away with every bite. Being a wet burrito, all this came topped with red sauce and cheese to make a perfect concoction of salty goodness that could have come straight from the kitchen of my childhood friend. It was served alongside a wealth of crispy, warm tortilla chips. One of my favorite things that I found in the Mexican restaurants of old is the bottles of carbonated, non-alcoholic sangria. Sangria is a drink normally consisting of red wine and fruit

Enrique’s Cocina Mexicana Located in the Dolphin Plaza, 2395 S. Kihei Rd., #112, Kihei. 875-2910. $ Since moving to the island, I’ve lamented the fact that the taquerias here, though delicious, have less of that authentic flavor I remember so well. Then I discovered Enrique’s. Walking in for the first time, I ordered a rice and bean, wet burrito. I was amazed to find Enrique’s rice is that soft rice displaying a tint of red drawn from the sauce it’s cooked in. It’s real Mexican rice, not the sticky white stuffy you get with plate lunches. This part of the burrito alone took me back to memories of dinners at Concha’s house. The beans are the creamy refried kind that you know can’t be low calorie, but pretend that they’re okay. Because they are beans, they do have a lot of protein. Yes. That’s it. I can

juices, but taquerias often sell bottles that taste very similar, even though they contain bubbles and lack the alcohol content. Enrique’s Concina Mexicana is the first place on the island I’ve found that carries this tasty treat. There are also plenty of vegetarian and even vegan items on the menu, as well as daily specials on food and drink specials throughout the week. You can get these items to go, or sit at the cute picnic-esque tables in front. And, if you want to switch things up a bit, their sister store is next door: Enrique’s Deli & Liquor Store. There you can find made-to-order sandwiches, salads, hot dogs and more. Since it’s a liquor store, you can also find singleserve bottles of Patron. MTW

Cinco de Mayo! Friday [HOLIDAY] Cinco de Mayo serves the nationalist project of promoting pride in a country and its culture. And it’s worked like a charm in making Mexicans out of all ethnicities come May 5, even if the extent of commitment toward México lindo y querido is drinking Corona instead of Coors. But celebrating Cinco de Mayo is ridiculous because it commemorates a victory that ultimately meant nothing. Sure, General Ignacio Zaragoza and his troops held off an invading French army that glorious day of May 5, 1862, in Puebla, but the Mexican triumph was shortlived. When the French and Mexicans fought a year later on the same battlefield, the French whipped some Mexican ass and ushered in a five-year occupation under the Hapsburg Maximillian. Nevertheless, Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and you probably will too, just to seem multiculti and all, or to try to nail a hot Mexican chica. Although the multitude of Mexicans swarming the mainland have yet to swim to Hawai’i en masse, you can still celebrate Cinco de Mayo at a number of venues on Maui (see The Grid and Da Kine Calendar, p.23-26). Drink tequila, don a sombrero, but remember: even the sight of you in a mustache isn’t as stupid as the holiday you celebrate. [GUSTAVO ARELLANO]

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at St. Theresa Church, Kihei

[WORLD MUSIC] Jai Uttal is a longtime student of Indian music and kirtan, or devotional chanting. But he’s also performed in various reggae, R&B and punk bands. Uttal and his band the Pagan Love Orchestra gained global recognition with their albums Footprints and Monkey in the early ‘90s. His concerts started a trend in dance music that “united the temple and the nightclub, the sacred and the worldly.” His latest album, Mondo Rama, combined Brazilian music with Hebrew prayers, Appalachian blues, Beatlesesque psychedelics and Indian chanting. Naturally, it was nominated in 2002 for a Grammy as “Best New Age Album.” Plus, yoga practitioners just adore him! Jai Uttal will be accompanied this weekend by Daniel Paul, as well as the Kirtan Choir and Bhakti dancer Nubia Teixeira on Sunday. $20. The Studio Maui is located at Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Rd., 575-9390 or for more info, visit www.thestudiomaui.com.

Saturday, 9 p.m. at Hapa’s [DJ] A truly international turntablist, Raoul Belmans has played in clubs from Almaty (Kazakhstan) to Zurich (Switzerland). Get it? That’s A to Z! Yeah… anyway, his cuts can be found on myriad record labels but Swirl People is his main project moniker—the debut album Hi Mom, Let’s Dance was a big hit in the UK. He’s got his own record label now, which boasts many names vital to the dance music scene, as well as a radio show called “Aroma” in Belgium. And you know DJs, they tend to come in flocks—so Raoul will be joined by other Boomp-Tee House players from Hawai’i, Daniel J and Erik Penn.

[CLASSICAL] Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart was born in Salzburg on Jan. 27, 1756—that makes him an Aquarius! Oh, and of course, he’s also one of the most important composers of European classical music in history. In fact, the Italian composer Rossini once noted of Mozart, “He is the only musician who had as much knowledge as genius, and as much genius as knowledge.” And he was only 35 when he died. Anyway, this year marks his 250th birthday. In honor, the Galliard String Quartet from Chamber Music Hawaii, as well as the Maui Concert Chorus and Maui Youth Chorus, a chamber ensemble of local musicians, and sopranos Lisa Paulson and Vania Jerome will perform the ambitious Mass that Mozart composed for his wife. St. Theresa Church is located at 25 W. Lipoa St. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. $25 general seating, or $5 for youth 18 and under. For tickets or info, call 870-5560 or visit online at mauimusicarts.org.

This Week in Imported Reggae Bands

Sunday, 3 p.m. at Launiupoko Beach Park

Sunday, 5:30 p.m., VFW’s in Kihei; Tuesday, 10 p.m. at Casanova in Makawao

[HEALTH] The Encyclopedia Britannica describes laughter as, “…a rhythmic, vocalized, expiratory and involuntary action…” There is proof that laughter can improve health and fight disease. Now, let’s be clear, laughter is not the same as humor. Trust me, I’ve seen people laugh even thought they completely lack a sense of humor. I, on the other hand, have a great sense of humor and yet sometimes people don’t know why I’m laughing. They just didn’t get it. Anyways, every year “World Laughter Day” is celebrated on the first Sunday of May. Conveniently, there is a laughter club on Maui called “Aloha Ha.” Clever, eh? So after some surf and barbeque, the club’s Stu Alexander will lead a free, 45-minute laughter session followed by a prayer for world peace, and then a laughing competition with prizes. Here’s a little inspiration to get you in the mood: Three guys are out fishing. One somehow catches a mermaid who immediately promises to grant each of them a wish if they set her free. The first one wishes to be twice as intelligent and POOF! He’s reciting Shakespeare. The second is impressed so he wishes to be three times as intelligent and POOF! He’s figuring out math and science problems at rapid speeds. The third watches in amazement and decides he wants to quadruple his intelligence. The mermaid tries to warn him against this, but he’s determined and POOF! He’s a woman. HA! For more info, call 344-5442. [HEIDI KING]

[REGGAE] Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA) is a socially conscious reggae-based band from Washington, D.C. And the critics love them, throwing terms out like “flawless,” “fiery,” and “mesmerizing,” as well as the requisite hemp jokes and references to white boys with dreads. Word is, if you’re a fan of Groundation—and I know there are tons of you out there—you might wanna check these guys out, too. VFW’s (Veterans of Foreign Wars Bldg) is located at 2502 Uluniu Rd. behind Azeka Plaza parking lot, Oceanside. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Sunday’s show is all ages. Tuesday’s show is 21 and over. Doors open one hour before showtime. Get your tickets online at www.inticketing.com or call 866-55-TICKETS; also available at Beach Road Records, Bahama Mama, Requests, Paradise Audio and Maui Sea Skins.

Filmmaker Paul Greengrass (notable for his terrific 2002 docudrama Bloody Sunday about the 1972 British Army massacre of 27 civilians in Northern Ireland) wrote and directed what is a disturbingly prosaic piece of dramatic conjecture about one of the most puzzling events of 9/11. As a fictionalized docudrama, United 93 punctures all suspension-of-disbelief because of the intrinsic absurdness that the mightiest military power on earth couldn’t scramble F-16 fighter planes to perform aerial escorts for the “11 commercial airliners” first believed hijacked on 9/11. A somber prologue introduces four young Muslim men praying inside their

hotel room in the wee hours on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The scene divulges a subtly racist undercurrent that plays out during the film with the thinly concealed hubris that America’s Neocons have benefited from under the guise of false patriotism since 9/11. In the film’s production notes, Greengrass gives his mission statement: “There are lots of ways to find meaning in the events of 9/11. Television can convey events as they happen. A reporter can write history’s rough first draft. Historians can widen the time frame and give us context… Filmmakers have a part to play, too, and I believe that sometimes, if you look clearly and unflinchingly at a single event, you can find in its

shape something much larger than the event itself—the DNA of our times.” In practice, the filmmaker leverages the contrasting estimable talents of Ken Loach’s devoted director of photography Barry Akroyd (Raining Stones) with three editors: Clare Douglas (Bloody Sunday), Christopher Rouse (The Bourne Supremacy), and Richard Pearson (Men in Black II). His “clear and unflinching” gaze at the “single event” diverts in telling ways from recorded facts. Greengrass gets a performance windfall from Ben Sliney, the actual FAA Operations Manager on duty at Herndon, Virginia on 9/11, playing himself with the hard-bitten charisma that comes from years of experience. However, Greengrass still can’t help nudging out dramatic truth when he has Sliney give the order for a “national ground stop” for all air traffic in the country, when, in fact, it was FAA head Jane Garvey who gave that order. The cell phone/air phone calls are an area of tacit fiction that the auteur fudges with discreet but significant treatment. The actual recorded calls from the “passengers” of United Airlines Flight 93 are suspiciously vague and calculated. The calls were never more than a couple of sentences long and share a symmetrical brand of abstract logic that rings false in the context of a hijacked aircraft. They’re telling for their clipped structure and ridiculously short length. They don’t convey any of the mile-a-minute patter that a panicked person would use to call for immediate help in a hijack situation. Ultimately, United 93 is a regurgitation of suspicious media-fueled speculation about events on an airplane that we know very little about. This is a movie that does more to discourage raising questions about what really happened to Flight 93 than it does to encourage debate over the bastion of lies that have been fed to the American people. New This Week AN AMERICAN HAUNTING - (PG13) Thriller - Supposedly based on a true story. In 1818 a ghost, refered to as “Old Kate,” took up residency in the Bell household. The spirit tortured mainly the youngest daughter and only became stronger as they tried to get rid of her. Now Hollywood has come up with a film to show how it all went down. 84 min. (Heidi King) HOOT - (PG) - Family, Adventure - No, it’s not about large-breasted females in tight white shirts and orange shorts. It’s about about a young boy who moves from Montana to Florida and finds himself defending the lives of endangered owls. Sure to be a heartwarming, eye-welling good time. 90 min. (HK) MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III - (PG 13) Action/Adventure - Once again Tom Cruise plays super-elite spymaster Ethan Hunt, this time tasked with finding some uber-bad guy played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Expect

AMERICAN DREAMZ - (PG13) - Comedy Dennis Quaid plays the “out of touch” President (much like Bush) who goes on everyone’s favorite karaoke-esque show. Hugh Grant plays the producer of American Dreamz (much like American Idol). I wonder what Simon would tell Bush if he were on the show. (HK) THE BENCHWARMERS - (PG13) - Comedy, Sports - It’s Revenge of the Nerds meets Bad News Bears in this tale of dorks overcoming all, starring Rob Schneider, a pack of SNL alumni, and that guy from Napoleon Dynamite. Mel the Millionaire Nerd hatches a plan to form a team of pariahs to do battle against the toughest little league team in the state and enlists the aid of Gus and his misfit friends, Ritchie and Clark. Gus’ prowess on the diamond earns him the adoration of the dweeb masses, but what happens when they learn that he was once a bully? I think I smell Oscar. 87 min. (Will Watkins) FRIENDS WITH MONEY - (R) - Comedy Jennifer Anniston and Joan Cusack lead an ensemble cast portraying the plight of upperclass, West Coast gals on the brink of going Middle-Age Crazy. No animals were harmed in the making of this motion picture. 88min. (WW) ICE AGE 2: THE MELTDOWN - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Animation - I’m sorry but I loved the first one. Suprisingly, the sequel may just be up to par. They’ve got the original voices for this unlikely group of pre-historic animals as they cope with a new set of rules due to the ice, y’know, melting. 90 min. (HK) LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN - R - Thriller, Crime, Gangster - Josh Hartnett stars as Slevin, the victim of both an unfortunate name as well a case of mistaken identity, who finds himself in the crossfire of two warring New York Crime Bosses known as The Rabbi (Ben Kingsly) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). To further complicate matters, he must also stay one step ahead of the dogged Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and the nefarious assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis). Wackiness ensues. 110 min. (WW)

SHOWTIMES RV - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Family - Robin Williams plays Bob, a work-obsessed guy who tricks his family into giving up their dream vacation to Hawai’i in exchange for a road trip in an RV. Bob only does this to please his boss, but his family doesn’t know that. Confusion, slapstick comedy and the eventual realization that family is what’s really important is inevitable. 98 min. (HK) SCARY MOVIE 4 - (PG 13) - Comedy - The fourth installment of the popular horror movie-spoof series… Wait, there was a Scary Movie 3? Really? Who was—ah, forget it. Directed by David Zucker, this one stars Leslie Nielson, Anna Faris and that Dr. Phil guy. 100 min. (AP) THE SENTINEL - (PG 13) - Thriller - Think In the Line of Fire meets The Fugitive with a little 24 thrown in, kinda. Michael Douglas plays a veteran Secret Service agent wrongly accused of conspiring to kill the President and Keifer Sutherland plays his protégé charged with bringing him—the wrongfully accused agent, not the President— down, I think. I have a headache. 108 min. (AP) SHE’S THE MAN - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance A teenage girl poses as her twin brother at a new school. It’s a love octagon with everyone crushing on somebody else, teenage angst, confusion and sexual awkwardness. Amazingly, it might actually be funny. 105 min. (HK) SILENT HILL - (R) - Horror - A little girl does some sleep walking and talks about a place she’s never been. So her mother decides it’ll help the girl if they head for a town called Silent Hill. The girl goes missing and her mom is up against the forces of evil. Moms are hardcore when it comes to their babies. 127 min. (HK) STICK IT - (PG13) - Comedy - The writer of Bring It On has come up with another movie with a similar concept. A rebel girl who fled the life of gymnastics gets in trouble with the law and is forced to go back to it. It’s a hard knock life. 103 min. (HK) TSOTSI - (NR) - Drama - This rather intense film shows six days in the life of a ruthless gang leader in the South African township of Soweto, who ends up caring for a baby that happened to be in the car he just jacked. Stars Presley Chweneyagae and Mothusi Mogano. 94 min. (AP) UNITED 93 - (R) - Drama - This is a dramatization of the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacking and crash of United Airlines Flight 93, as well as a best guess at what occurred on the plane itself. Movie audiences are already freaking out over the trailer, so you can imagine how they’ll receive the movie itself. (See Film Critique, p. 20.) 90 min. (AP) THE WILD - (G) - Animation, Family - A young lion is transported to Africa from the New York City zoo...by mistake. Then freed, also by mistake. His loving ‘ohana from the zoo band together to try to locate and bring him back. Does anyone else think this seems a lot like Madagascar? The difference is this is Disney and that was Dreamworks. Kinda like A Bugs Life and Antz. 94 min. (HK)

Keeping the Zine Alive Talking with Scumbag Tulip founder, Gannon Gilmore Zines may be the only true voice of the people left. These small-circulation, selfpublished, produced and distributed magazines carry no advertising or limitations on content. Gannon Gilmore, who publishes Scumbag Tulip in Wailuku, knows all about them. He’s been keeping the underground press alive on Maui for 10 years. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: What was the first zine you remember reading, and when did it occur to you to do one yourself? GANNON GILMORE: Truthfully when we started the zine, [Scumbag Tulip co-creator] Shaun Mohan and I had no concept of them, or the whole culture involved. We both fell deeply in love with punk rock and we were a couple losers with no girls around so somehow the idea came around of putting out a “punk rock” magazine of some sort. It wasn’t until later when Rop, from Lookout Records at the time, sent us a package of zines. It was from this package that I read my first fanzine Molasses Soulkiss that I really dug and where I first grew to love the handwritten, hand-

I don’t ever rush myself so I’ll always come around to it when I want to. What’s funny is I’ll give myself vague deadlines then extend them as I procrastinate over time. I try to get them in coffee shops, record stores, momand-pop places but really infrequently. So I end up sending them out to people in Oahu for help and pass them out myself. It’s more fun and personal that way but sometimes embarrassing when they actually read them.

made aspect of them.

How did you get started? I remember writing to Aaron Cometbus [creator of seminal punk zine Cometbus in the 1980s and ‘90s] a long time ago and asking him about this very kind of thing and his response was actually, “What are you talking about?” There were no zines on Maui, no one around to help, so we figured it out along the way. I handwrote everything because I hated sitting and typing for hours. I collaborate and get the material together, edit, print, staple, distribute, etc. It’s probably more work than most people would put into something with little reward or remuneration.

Why do you do this? I really got into writing through reading fanzines like Scam, Cometbus and Second Guess which led to guys like Kerouac, Orwell, Bukowski, and of course, Palahniuk. I just fell in love with the idea of writing and publishing my own work. Too many people who write spend a lot of time trying to get their work to publishers. But why not be your own?

Who contributes to each issue and how

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a zine? do you find them? As far as the writers and artists that show up in the rag, that just comes down to whoever we bump shoulders with along the way. Naturally, a lot of friends get featured but then some folks get a hold of a copy and want to submit something. What was great was that most of the folks who wrote for ST ended up doing their own zines, too.

How long does it take to put an issue together and how do you distribute it? Production has taken me from a week to six months. Sometimes I’ll end up spending a week on just getting a title the way I like it.

Don’t do it to get girls. Don’t do it for comped CD’s. Don’t do it to get backstage. Do it because you have something to say. Do it because you have creativity and you want people to see it. Do it to help other people get their work out there. Fanzines are the best place for writers and artists to show off their work when no one will give you that big break. Of course in the age of blogging, that’s a moot point but I’m of the opinion that something tangible that you can hold in your hands is more worthwhile.

You can request the 10th Anniversary issue of Scumbag Tulip (#17) by sending $2 (ppd) to P.O. Box 2071, Kahului, HI 96732. MTW

CAERIEL CRESTIN

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You know why you have to be a leader this week? Because you’re in a position to be one. Maybe it’s because you know things others don’t, or simply because you can see the situation from a wider perspective. Perhaps it’s just because they want or need you to take control. It might just be because you can do a good job and you know it. Whatever the reason, please don’t deny the obvious role you’re to take in all the things happening around you. When the reins are presented (or otherwise available) to you, please grab them.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) One of these things is not like the others; one of these things does not belong… Most of the stuff you’re doing is helping you become a better person or proceed towards your dreams. The other activity (or three) you’re engaging in isn’t exactly bad, it’s just not adding anything especially to your life, bigpicture-wise. This week, take notice of which of your pursuits aren’t truly part of the master plan. There’s no need to completely eliminate them (at least not yet), but once you see how much time they’re taking away from what really counts, you might want to cut down.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’re sometimes a bit like Frankenstein’s monster: made up of dozens of assorted pieces that don’t necessarily cooperate well with each other—in fact many of them compete and conflict, rebel and resist. While this may be conceptually fascinating, it’s exhausting in practice. You’re constantly wondering how to get all your different parts to start pulling in the same direction, so you can get on with your life, instead of regularly sabotaging your own efforts. The whole answer to this question will require many years to discover, but a juicy helpful clue should present itself this week.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Being stalked is only fun in theory. Drop your secret fantasy about it; that oversized ego will get you in trouble this week, otherwise. Remember that any time a lover has displayed the slightest clinginess, you’ve run for the hills. Even worshipful adoration got tiresome, didn’t it? This week you’re due to receive the kind of attention that could easily explode into something more extreme, if you let your perverse ego have its way. Don’t encourage your potential admirer(s), despite the temptation. Nip this one now, or it’ll come back to bite you, hard, and sooner than you think.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I’m sure you’ve noticed how our world is becoming less and less free. How small will the boxes we’re forced to live inside become before we find them unendurable? And will we then be too weak to actually break free? Please recognize that when even you—who can find ways to flourish in the most limiting circumstances—feel cramped and anxious by the strictures that bind you, the rest of us are really in trouble. Can you help yourself (and us) break out? There’s no time to waste. This week, please devote your considerable resourcefulness and energy towards finding ways to protect and expand what freedoms we still have.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Here’s to your glamour and flair, Libra. Whatever you do, from the noble to the ignoble, you do with style. This is why some of you end up manifesting a world more superficial than substantial; the people around you are so dazzled by your methods that they don’t notice the (lack of) content beneath. Although they may not care, I know you do. If you haven’t exactly been living up to your own private standards, this week is a good time to remedy that. Most of those around you may not be any more or less impressed when your actions and intentions shift from selfish to altruistic but I guarantee, it’ll make a difference to you.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) An ambigram is a word that can be read in more than one way—for instance it can say one thing when simply read, and another when reflected in a mirror, or flipped upside-down. It’s kind of gimmicky, I know, but it nevertheless reminds me of you—how you can appear to be your own polar opposite depending on when and where someone is looking at you. Bear this in mind when someone reacts to you this week in a totally unexpected way—it’s probably more a reflection of where they’re coming from and how they’re seeing you than anything real about you. However, practice patience and compassion, instead of dismissing them out of hand. If you can talk them around to seeing something like the “real” you (whoever that is), you’ll be deeply thankful you bothered.

Most everyone ties their shoelaces basically the same way but why? There are actually many knot variations that are faster to tie, more secure, or both. It’s one of those things we almost never think about or question. Would our lives change much if we did? Probably not. But you never know. What I do know is that there are at least two other things you do on automatic, without wondering if there’s a “better” (More efficient? More happiness-inducing?) way. If you can identify them, and switch over to some improved method, your life would change, in at least 11 good (if not mind-blowing or earth-shattering) ways. If that’s not a good ratio of effort to result, I don’t know what is.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Kyle MacDonald (http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com) started less than a year ago with one red paperclip on offer. He traded that for a wooden fish pen, then a handmade doorknob, then a Coleman stove. He’s continued “trading up” from there, and now has a year’s free rent on a house in Phoenix. He’s hoping he can keep doing better and better trades until he has his own house. Granted he’s making “something” out of “nothing” mostly because people are charmed by the idea and kindly helping him out. But you could do something similar (if on a smaller, less grand scale) this week, if you were but to try.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When planning your next move, don’t be too ambitious. I know jumping into deep water has worked for you before, but it’s just not a good idea this time. The water’s likely to be so cold you’ll be climbing out again before you’ve even had time to think. I suggest the torturous but manageable strategy of wading in a few inches at a time. It’ll take ages to get to where you want to be, and it won’t be a pleasant process but at least you’ll actually get there, eventually.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You could live happily on an island by yourself, if you had to. The trick is, you’d have to have no chance of escape or rescue. In that case, you’d adapt and even thrive. But possessing even a glimmer of hope might poison the whole thing—instead of making the best of things, and learning to enjoy what you can in the situation, you’d obsess over the (unlikely) way out of it. Can you see how having options can occasionally be bad for you? Please, when presented with some this week, do your best to pretend they don’t exist. I promise, you’ll almost certainly be happier for it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) An Aries walking around with an empty belly? Usually, you experience a need and you fill it. So what could possibly convince you to deprive yourself? A potential love? A principle? Some authority figure? (Yeah, right.) Or could it be that you’ve already grasped the point of this week’s lesson—sometimes it feels better to sacrifice what you have (or could have) just to give it to someone else. Give up something you want this week, and make sure someone who needs it gets it. The rumblings in your tummy won’t matter in the slightest—even the faintest whispered “thank you” will be able to drown them out CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

The Magical World of Disney I am interested in entertaining people, in bringing pleasure, particularly laughter, to others, rather than being concerned with ‘expressing’ myself with obscure creative impressions. – Walt Disney This week was like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride for me. Any of you experience this once C-ticket, now-defunct ride at Disneyland? It was in the Anaheim theme park’s Fantasyland section, and it was a crazy, jarring, darkly surreal kiddie rollercoaster—especially for the likes of Disney. It was one of my favorites. As the Widen Your World (A Restful Haven for Walt Disney World’s Deceased, Deferred and Deflowered) website states, Mr. Toad’s was a ride that, “No matter which way riders swerved or ducked, all roads ultimately led to a direct collision with a speeding locomotive in a pitch-black tunnel and an audience with Satan, surrounded by a horde of grinning red devils in the volcanic bowels of hell.” That’s right. Hell. Stop by and see me sometime. So my week like a wild amusement park ride was fun, to be sure. And probably the kind of week you’d imagine I’m having all the time. Full of drinking, debauchery, transgendered fun, the high fashion of 1986, sex, candlewax, amphibious organs, glamour, hilarity, excitement and all roads leading straight to hell. Some of which I can actually tell you about right here in this column! I spent a good deal of time at Ray’s and the Sly Mongoose last week, sharing laughs with Mikey, Tio and their respective, wonderfully un-OC/Laguna Beach bar ‘ohana. Thursday night I briefly checked in with the Erin Smith Band at Henry’s. Yep, she still rocks. Then it was on to the Zion-I gig at Hapa’s, where Amphibeus Tungs gave me a hip-hop lashing I thoroughly enjoyed. Get it? Tung-lashing? But it was the good kind. See, that was Tung-in-cheek… Anyway, I’m saying I really liked the show. And on Saturday I was fortunate enough to know people who know people who got me in to see Gomega and Slightly Stoopid at Paradice Bluz, where I promptly got slightly dumb with tequila. Okay, maybe more than slightly. Those people even ushered me into the coveted VIP section at the joint. But it was lonely at the top so I resumed my usual cavorting with the peasant masses. Them’s my people. Thankfully, Mr. Escargot supplied me with bitter limes for my journey to Club Pillow. He’s good like that. Even for a VIP. Sunday I watched Private Benjamin for the umpteenth time before I donned Madonna-crosses and ankle boots for the big ‘80s Prom Party at Bocalino. The kids there barely remembered the ‘80s, but did a fantastic job mimicking the style and dancing with gusto to “PYT” and “Push It.” Although one pretty young thing in leg warmers and neon pink half-gloves expressed disappointment that she couldn’t have her “Safety Dance.” “It’s my most favorite song ever!” she said. Her friend with Dynasty-fabulous hair wearing a shoulder-padded power suit and pearls agreed. And then the next night Kim and I returned to Bocalino for the cross-dressing Victor/Victoria Party. While we reveled in Taylor Dayne, Cher and Gloria Gaynor hits, we admired the drawn moustaches and sideburns of our lady friends, and the grace with which six-foot tall divas walked in size 13 stilettos. “Damn!” said Kim, of one. “She looks better in those heels than I would.” Unfortunately we’d left our camouflaged pants, combat boots and Rambo-dirty wifebeaters at the cleaners. So we very unimaginatively went as women dressed as men dressed as women. I know, we suck. But a machine gun bandolier has no place at Hapa’s, where we went to next to check out Willie K and his much-deserved legion of fans. But yeah… this past week is just so not normal. Generally, my life is filled with schmaltz, kitsch, sarcasm, borderline boredom, cheesy jokes, nice scenery, fun but underpaid tour guides, wild but docile animals, plastic snakes…. and is overall, pretty relaxing—until the cannibals get restless. Yep, my life is more like the Jungle Cruise Ride in Adventureland. Still, it’s entertaining for three-year-olds, teenagers on acid and perpetually drunk grown-ups. Definitely an E-ticket attraction— I don’t care what Walt says.
