LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR ANOTHER BIO COMPLAINT In response to the recent article regarding Pacific Biodiesel (“So Frustrating,” May 4, 2006), it is too bad the author did such a poor job of researching the facts. There is a lot of misinformation out there concerning biodiesel use and this was a missed opportunity to write a balanced article concerning all the positive uses and pleased consumers of their product. It is easy to be negative toward new ideas and new ways to doing things. The harder thing is to pioneer and create something good out of something bad. Bob and Kelly King have turned used cooking oil that was filling up our landfills into a new useable fuel when at the same time petroleum products are getting less available and more expensive. They are to be applauded for their public service. They are some of the “good people.” -Gary Elster, Kihei Anthony Pignataro responds: In the absence of specific instances where I did “poor” research or repeated “misinformation,” all I can say is that my story was not in any way an attack on Pacific Biodiesel or alternative fuels, but rather a reporting of various complaints alleged by numerous parties that the fuel may have played a role in mechanical breakdowns—complaints that have received no examination in any other publication.

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 5, 2006 press release announcing her signing HB 3115:

“I am pleased that Hawai’i consumers will no longer be subject to the failed experiment to artificially control gas prices… [But] It is unfortunate that in repealing one failed experiment, the Legislature has approved another measure that attempts to fool the public into thinking gas prices should be lower than what is realistically possible.”

What she didn’t say: At least the state Legislature tried to do something about high gas prices. Lingle’s solution has long been to let the oil companies charge whatever they wanted, even as they raked in billions of dollars. Chevron made $4 billion in the first three months of 2006. Four billion dollars—not in revenue, but in profit. And that was nothing compared to Exxon Mobil, which made $8.4 billion in profits in the first quarter. Even though it’s painfully obvious these record earnings have come at our expense, the federal government refuses to impose any kind of windfall profits tax on Big Oil. Laying down a gasoline price cap, even one as flawed as the one Lingle just eliminated, showed working people out here that government—or at least part of the government—cared about the situation.

Well, our beloved governor, the ever cunning Ms. Linda Lingle, seems
to have done it to us again! Her noble justification for the addition of 10 percent ethanol to our gasoline was to help reduce our dependance on oil, if you all recall. Reality is that it has provided nothing for the people and plenty of opportunity for the refiners, retailers and HC&S proving once again that she is, perhaps, King George’s best understudy. I’ve just used my first tank full of her magic elixir. It was obviously more expensive as the addition of the ethanol added five cents to its wholesale cost which translates into who knows how much at the pump. I couldn’t help but notice the reduced power of my engine as I now have to downshift more frequently when returning to my home on Haleakala and my calculated gas mileage dropped from 22 miles per gallon to 20 miles per gallon Say, isn’t that a 10 percent reduction? Curious! No matter! Look at all Ms. Lingle has accomplished! She’s created a new ethanol production industry we really didn’t need. She’s extended the death throws of the sugar industry by providing a market for their green waste. And now, our gasoline prices will vary not only as a function of the oil companies’ greed but also that of the ethanol producers (and keep in mind that a gallon of ethanol is more expensive now than a gallon of gasoline). The topper—we’ll all be using more of a more expensive product! Didn’t the Guv just browbeat the legislature into suspending the gas cap? Whoops! Different subject! Different letter! -Al Rabold, Kula

This goes out to the new owners of what used to be my favorite local Kahului. My friends made reservations weeks ahead of to make sure we had a place to enjoy each other’s company on Cinco de Mayo. But as soon as we sat down, we were told that we had a time limit. How unprofessional, considering that we were going to order an endless stream of apps, dinners and drinks. Yet you insisted on giving us hard looks as we ate. You tried to pull away our plates before we were finished. You told us we had to go after we had just ordered deserts and more drinks. We may not been up to your flashy tastes but remember that it’s us everyday locals who keep your business up and running during the slow season. We know this, because we’re business owners, too. The sad thing was that we left after dessert because we all had to work the next day. But since you tossed us out at 7:30 you had the whole night ahead of you to treat others like crap for profit. You suck.

Neocons Squander Their Only Victory Facing collapse, Palestinians turn to America’s enemies Abandon the tactic of terrorism and work within the system, the United States and its Western allies have long urged armed resistance groups. Lay down your weapons and pick up a megaphone. Campaign for public office and, if the people you claim to represent agree with your ideas, you’ll win power peacefully. Then, whether or not they share your values, the world will recognize your movement as legitimate and will treat you accordingly. In the Muslim world, the focus of American-led democratization efforts since 9/11, Republican neoconservatives have repeatedly used a Sunni boycott of Iraqi elections as a cautionary tale: you’ll be shut out if you don’t participate. Hamas, formally known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, got the message. After two decades of suicide bombings and guerilla warfare against Israel the Palestinian group, founded in 1987 as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, was exhausted. In 2004 Israel assassinated four of Hamas’ top officials, including 67-year-old founder Sheikh Ahmed Ishmail Yassin—whose paralysis had confined him to a wheelchair. Hamas boycotted the January 2005 Palestinian presidential election held to replace Yassir Arafat only to see its political enemy Mahmoud Abbas take power. Frustrated that they were no closer to their goal of an independent Palestinian state than they had been in 1987, Hamas’ leaders changed course. They declared a unilateral ceasefire, or tahdiyah (Arabic for “period of calm”) in March 2005.
They ran candidates in municipal elections. Some won. Encouraged by their success in working within a democratic process developed at the behest of the Clinton and Bush Administrations, Hamas ran a full slate of candidates for the Palestinian Authority Legislative Council. Palestinians liked what they saw and heard from Hamas. In January 2006 Hamas won 76 out of 132 seats in the Council, becoming the majority party in a race with a turnout of over 80 percent. Celebrating their sweeping victory, Hamas officials promised not to cave in to American and Israeli demands that the group disarm and recognize Israel’s right to exist. Despite their clear mandate, however, Hamas indicated that they were willing to make concessions. The tahdiyah remained in effect, and the party’s leaders said they were ready to start peace talks with Israel. “Negotiation is not a taboo,” said Mahmoud Zahar, a major Hamas figure. The Bushies might have lost Afghanistan and Iraq, but they got exactly what they wanted in Palestine: democratic elections, a peaceful transfer of power, a radical Islamist group ready to disavow terrorism and transform itself into a parliamentary political party, a majority party willing to work with Israel and her allies. It was a staggering victory for the neoconservative agenda, a golden opportunity to co-opt one of the most prominent organizations of militant Muslims in the world, and proof positive that democracy prevails over terrorism. And the neocons hated it. U.S. state-controlled media reacted to Hamas’ victory with dismay. “[It] can hardly be considered good news,” editorialized The Wall Street Journal. “If your

Five Months Many of the cases involving the serving of minors or already intoxicated customers that come before the Liquor Control Board of Adjudication begin with routine calls LC investigators make to the Maui Police Department. During the late night, early morning hours, LC officers will call the PD and ask if they’ve got any drunks or liquor-related matters. If they do, the LCO will head over and open a case file right there. The matter involving the Ka’anapali restaurant Rusty Harpoon that went before the board on May 4 didn’t start out that way. But it exemplifies the lengths LC investigators will go to pursue a potential violation. Way back on the night of April 5, 2005, two guys—both underage—took seats at the Harpoon bar and began drinking. For reasons that aren’t very clear, the two guys left the Harpoon and promptly got into a fight with another Harpoon customer. That night, Maui police officers arrested both underage guys on charges of assault. Should have been an easy investigation for the LC, given that the two perps were in custody the night of the incident. But the LC never investigated the guys that night. In fact, they didn’t talk to them—or anyone at the Harpoon—until late August and early September of 2005. According to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas, the guys eluded the LC by given phony contact info to the police, forcing the LC to spend the next five months checking “public information” in an attempt to find the guys. When they finally did track the two down, they conducted their interviews—apparently the passage of so much time didn’t harm their memories of the night one bit— and wrote up their complaint. The LC charged Rusty Harpoon with 10 counts related to over-service and serving alcohol to minors. At first pleading not guilty, the Harpoon’s attorney cut a deal with Temas just minutes before the May 4 hearing was to begin, dropping the count list to just four in exchange for a no contest plea. The board later fined the Rusty Harpoon $8,000, $2,000 for each count.

platform is the destruction of Israel, it means you’re not a partner in peace, and we’re interested in peace,” said George W. Bush (shortly after going to war against two countries and sponsoring coups in several others). He ordered a stop to American aid and froze Palestinian bank accounts. Elections, it seems, are only good when you like who wins. “It’s not possible,” asserted Hamas spokesman Farhat Asaad, “for the U.S. and the world to turn its back on an elected democracy.” He underestimated our capacity for hypocrisy. On February 13, The New York Times reported that “The United States and Israel are discussing ways to destabilize the Palestinian government so that newly elected Hamas officials will fail and elections will be called again, according to Israeli officials and Western diplomats. The intention is to starve the Palestinian Authority of money and international connections to the point where, some months from now, its president, Mahmoud Abbas, is compelled to call a new election...[They] say Hamas will be given a choice: recognize Israel’s right to exist, forswear violence and accept previous PalestinianIsraeli agreements—as called for by the United Nations and the West—or face isolation and collapse.” Once again, the geniuses who run United States foreign policy have transformed a glorious opportunity to gain an ally into total disaster. Rejected by the West whose democratic game it played and won, the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority has been shoved into the arms of America’s enemies. Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia—financiers of right-wing madrassas and the 9/11 attacks—have agreed to help the Authority make payroll for its 140,000 government employees. MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, May 10 For those of you not sufficiently terrified of a potential H5N1 “bird flu” influenza pandemic tearing across the world and destroying any semblance of society and normality in Hawai’i, then by all means check out today’s Honolulu Advertiser. The story outlines that if there’s an outbreak, “experts say” that there will be no shortage of catastrophes that will inundate our beloved islands. We’ll have to worry about running out of food and medicine since “25 percent to 30 percent of the population could be affected.” Sanitation, public transportation—such as it is—and communications could all break down. “I’ve even heard of scenarios where ATM machines ran out of cash,” said the state Health Department’s Disease Outbreak Control Division Deputy Chief Sarah Y. Park, who’s actually the only “expert” quoted in the story. Now I’ll admit all that is bad—especially the part about the ATMs. Now no one likes a good global disaster more than me—the World Health Organization estimates H5N1 could potentially mutate into a virus that could kill 7.4 million people—but there’s something about all this bird flu hysteria that’s bothering me. Perhaps it was Greg Easterbrook’s analysis of this very subject that posted on Slate.com on May. 8. In the story, Easterbrook pointed out that since 2003 bird flu has killed 113 people, yet the far less publicized rotavirus has done away with an astonishing 1.5 million people in the same period. Easterbrook also dared to point out that traffic accidents have killed four million people worldwide since 2003.

the Maui County Council. After many years of local activism, agitation, analysis and basically doing the work council members should have been doing themselves all along, Huelo resident Lucienne de Naie has announced that she will be a candidate for the East Maui council seat currently occupied by the retiring Bob Carroll. And it’s about time. De Naie understands land development, water resource management, transportation, historic preservation and probably a half dozen other things I’m forgetting. She’s more qualified to sit on that council than most of the incumbents and should have gotten herself elected to public office at least a decade ago. Yeah, I think that’s enough fawning for now.
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
TUESDAY, May 16
FRIDAY, May 12 I suppose it was bound to happen. Like Britney Spears getting pregnant again or Mel Gibson filming a weird movie in Yucatec, U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka has finally gotten his wish. Maybe. According to a breaking story just posted on the Honolulu Advertiser’s website, Akaka says his Senate colleagues have finally tired of his constant harping about his big Native Hawaiian recognition bill and have agreed to a floor debate. Sometime in June, assuming that in the meantime they don’t lose interest and there aren’t any killer hurricanes that drown a major American city, not that something like that would happen… again.
SATURDAY, May 13 Nothing. You?
SUNDAY, May 14 Maybe I’m just hypersensitive to stuff like this because I watched the outstanding but nauseating documentary The Corporation this weekend, but did anyone catch that full page Oceanic Time Warner Cable ad on page A12 of The Maui News today? If you didn’t, it was because the cable giant disguised their ad
Mall. But the Gateway won’t be just some ordinary, boring mall—it’s going to be a “lifestyle mall.” “A lifestyle mall isn’t [a] place you go to run errands,” Ellis Vice President Scott Crockford said in today’s Pacific Business News. “It’s a place where you go for fun… This is a trend nationwide and you’ll see more of it across Hawai’i—small malls anchored by fun places like big book stores and coffee shops with restaurants and fun places to shop, aimed at affluent residents and visitors.” See! Fun! He said it three times! It must be fun!
to look like a regular newspaper page, with stories, headlines and datelines all matching the usual Maui News style sheets. Except there was no news at all— just pure Oceanic fluff with “headlines” like “Control Freaks welcome ‘On Demand’ service” and “Oceanic’s Digital Revolution has something for everyone.” Of course, the word “Advertisement” appears on the top and bottom of the ad in type just large enough to be read without the aid of a scanning electron microscope, so it’s all ethical.
MONDAY, May 15 Who says corporations aren’t fun? Sure, some are all button-down shirts, spreadsheets and bovine growth hormone, but many are making great strides in the Department of Fun! Like CB Richard Ellis Hawai’i, which is developing the new Lahaina Gateway shopping center across from the Lahaina Cannery
The Toyota TAPESTRY program just gave Seabury Hall math and science teacher Martin Emde $10,000 to build an electric car, according to yesterday’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. This is great and wonderful and all—especially for Embe’s students, who will get tremendous experience building the car—but it’s also just a tad ironic. See, the grant comes from Toyota, which the last time I checked was still a carmaker. In fact, from 2002 to 2003, Toyota built the RAV4-EV, which was an actual electric car. This car was only around a short time—like all electric cars, which actually date back to the 1880s—but was enormously popular; in just eight months, the company sold out it’s entire two-year supply. But the car was a product of California’s then-strong Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate. See, in 1990, the state actually passed a law requiring that by 2003, 10 percent of all cars had to be electric. Companies like General Motors, which produced the EV-1, and Toyota duly complied with that law. And they were good cars, too, capable of driving as fast and nearly as far as any gasoline-powered automobile. Until 2003, that is, when the state decided it didn’t need any electric car mandate. Overnight, all those EV-1s and RAV4-EVs vanished. Which, unfortunately, is probably what’s going to happen to the car Embe’s class eventually builds.
Anthony Pignataro could really use one of those $10,000 grants right now.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD INGENIOUS! A Texas jury decided in 1991 that Steven Kenneth Staley, now 43, should be put to death for killing a restaurant manager, but three days before his February 2006 date with destiny, psychologists testified that he is mentally ill, and the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a mentally ill person cannot be executed. The solution, declared state judge Wayne Salvant in April, is for the state to inject Staley with enough psychotropic medicine to make him sufficiently sane to understand why he is going to die, at which point he can be killed. In similar cases, drugs improved Charles Singleton enough for his 2004 execution in Arkansas, but have failed since 1999 to restore Texan Emanuel Kemp’s competency.

April that a man still serving time for hiring a hit man to kill his wife was actually put in charge of the purchasing office of the state’s emergency management agency. Inmate Daniel Erickson was participating in a rehabilitation program intended to help prisoners find work when they get out and apparently was so good at his job that agency officials promoted him.
CHEESY POLITICS Last year, New York Gov. George Pataki, criticizing the legislature’s spending priorities, deplored wasting money on trivial state projects like “cheese museums and pro wrestling halls of fame.” In 2006, however, another $5,000 of state funds went to the Cuba (N.Y.) Cheese Museum, from a fund nominally controlled by Pataki. The Cuba Cheese Museum is not to be confused with the New York State Museum of Cheese in Rome, N.Y.
GOVERNMENT IN ACTION The newly installed municipal sewer system in the Florida Keys town of Islamorada was scheduled to go on line in May, but the real test will come shortly after that if the town cannot hook up a threshold number of residents to allow the system full, efficient functioning. The fallback plan, according to the town government, will require it to buy enough out-of-town sewage to boost the weak flow that would be running through the system.

In his hospital bed suffering from broken ribs, a punctured lung, and other injuries, Maggrah said, “I thought, ‘Holy crap, dude, you just got hit by a train.’ Maybe the metal gods above were smiling on me, and they didn’t want one of their true warriors to die on them.”
ARE WE SAFE YET? To free up soldiers for war-zone duty, the Army hires contractors to man the gates at 57 domestic installations, including Fort Bragg and West Point, but in April, the Government Accountability Office announced that, despite three warnings, some of the contractors continue to hire an alarming number of convicted felons as security guards. Lisa and Pete Cabrinha’s creative endeavors flow from Maui’s surf

isa and Pete Cabrinha have lived on Maui for 20 years. Surfing dominates their lives. It makes sense, considering that Lisa is a former professional windsurfer and Pete holds the largest wave ever ridden record, which he won at Peahi in 2004. “Surfing is the basis of my life,” says Pete, the founder of Cabrinha Kitesurfing. “Art is just one of those things that sits in the background and sort of claws its way out. My art allows me to be edgy and more provocative about what I’m trying to say.” Displayed on small and large canvases that hang in his home and studio, Pete’s surf-inspired art is a provoking combination of collage, photography, and paint with different methods of application. Pete says his artwork explores two different paths. The first is closely connected to Hawaiiana, while the second is more urban, inspired by street art and graffiti he’s seen during his frequent travel abroad.“There’s something I like about the grittiness of the city and how fast things move,” he says, though he insists he would never choose to live there. A piece hanging in the couple’s living room exemplifies both paths. It shows a seemingly typical beach scene with palm trees and a clear sky, yet the canvas

is distressed and manipulated to add a grainy, black and white feel that belies the ocean’s easygoing appearance. The Cabrinha’s breezy Haiku home is the central location for their creative output. Both have studios in the home, and though they use a completely different medium, the couple definitely share a common theme. Pete’s willowy wife Lisa, the creator and owner of Letarte swimwear, matches Pete’s creative drive and enthusiasm for Maui surf culture. Her swimwear, sold at Maui Girl in Paia and featured on the cover of such major national publications as the Victoria’s Secret catalog and Sports Illustrated, is unique and almost whimsical in design. “This year’s theme was love, peace and aloha,” Lisa says, citing the peace signs and flowing, easy shapes. Provocative patterns, sparkly details and a rainbow of colors set her swimsuits apart. Lisa’s studio is an explosion of color with racks of shimmery cover-ups and fabrics. Intricate details adorn the pieces. “Letarte has turned into almost a cult, and is definitely a collector’s brand,” Lisa says of her swimwear. She says her line has loyal customers all over the world, from Brazil to Europe to New York. Lisa is often contacted personally by celebrities—Kelly Osbourne was the latest—in search of her suits. Back when she was a pro windsurfer, Lisa eased into the swimwear industry by giving input to her sponsor’s lines. Starting her own line allowed her to get more imaginative with the designs.
“It is definitely a creative energy outlet,” she says, adding that her suits are known as some of the most original and artistic on the market. Recently she began designing beachwear and rash guards, among other accessories. Letarte stands out in that it is a homegrown, family business. Lisa’s sister handles marketing, and local seamstress Pam Winans hand-sews all the swimsuits. Lisa and Pete often give each other creative feedback, drawing on their different methods and approaches to infuse their diverse art mediums with meaning and style. Tahiti, the Cabrinah’s three-year-old daughter, was the inspiration for Petite Letarte, the child swimwear portion of the line. Lisa also employs local Maui girls as models, with Pete doing all the photo shoots for the Letarte catalogues. And either Lisa or her right hand woman Tammy Snodgrass, who assists Lisa in graphic design and is a creative collaborator to the swimwear line, personally test all new suits geared toward surfing. The couple’s lifestyle and artwork exudes both a powerful force as well as symbiotic peace, much like the ocean that Lisa and Pete hold so dear. From swimsuits to canvasses and everywhere in between, the couple’s creative energy and output work together to create something beautiful and meaningful. “The ocean is a pretty strong force,” says Pete. “There is enough commercial-looking art out there.” MTW

t’s been five months since the Clark Foam factory in Laguna Niguel, California spit out its last polyurethane surfboard blank. Still no word on why the company shut its doors—federal officials insist that owner Grubby Clark’s rambling Dec. 5, 2005 fax alleging “very large fines, civil lawsuits, and even time in prison” from massive environmental investigations should he stay open had no basis in reality. But what about the effect of the closure? For four decades, Clark Foam was the surfboard blank provider. The company dominated the industry—where most manufacturers were lucky to churn out 400 blanks
a week, Clark produced nearly 1,500 a day. There was no one anywhere in the world who made anywhere near the number of board blanks. According to the guy who runs the free online classifieds website Mauiusedboards.com, the number of used surfboards advertised for sale on his site spiked after Clark shut down. “It may be because more people have been hearing about the site,” he said.“But in the last few months, 31 boards have been posted, and 17 have already sold.” “It’s put a damper on everybody,” said Neal Norris of Valley Isle Surfboards. “Limited availability has made it real hard
on everybody.” Matt Kinoshita of Kazuma Surf agreed.“It’s been kinda difficult for everybody,” he said. Well, not really everybody. Though Kinoshita has had to make adjustments, he said the loss of Clark Foam didn’t hurt him at all. “I’ve been lucky enough to have supplies from Australia,” he said. “So it hasn’t really affected me. It’s been business as usual. But I feel bad for some of the other companies who didn’t have supplies lined up.The companies in Australia are so busy now. If you weren’t an existing customer [when Clark Foam closed], you’re basically out of luck. I know for a fact that it’s impossible to start accounts with Australian companies.” Indeed, Norris had just 46 blanks on hand when Clark shut down—less than a third of what he’d burn through in a week. But Norris’ immediate response was vintage surfer.
Could the loss of Clark Foam actually be a good thing?

By Anthony Pignataro
“We got to take a break,” Norris said.“The surf was really good. But now we’re back to work. Usually I do 150-200 boards a year. This year I’ll do about 100. That’s just because of that three months of all surf, no work.” For Kinoshita, business has never been better. “I average 40 boards a week,” he said. “That hasn’t changed in a couple of years. But the big difference now is that I’m exporting a whole lot of boards to Oregon, Virginia, places like that. The closure has hit the mainland 10 times more than here. They’re willing to pay shipping costs—$5060 per board—to get them there. It’s not a problem, because they’re willing to pay. This week we exported 15 boards to a North Carolina surf shop. “My whole export business has increased,” he added. “When everything’s said and done, I’ll have a lot more accounts than I started with.” Even so, Kinoshita is still having trouble meeting local demand. “Shortboard blanks are coming in, but no one has longboard blanks,” he said. “Longboards are really popular here. But you’ve either got a ton of import boards, Styrofoam boards or high-priced boards. I’m not sure what’s going to happen.” Both shapers said their costs have gone up. Because of scarcity and the need for more imported boards, Kinoshita’s costs have increased about $35 per board, while Norris has seen increases of $15 to $25 per board. “Obviously everyone had to raise their prices,” said Norris. “But I try to keep it affordable because surfers don’t have a lot of money.” The boards themselves are changing, too. Clark used polyurethane, but there’s not much of that lying around now. As a result,

shapers are now dealing with other, very different materials. “The majority of companies out there haven’t been able to get supplies,” said Kinoshita. “They’re now using Styrofoam and epoxy resin. We’re used to certain quality. Styrofoam might be a really good product, but visually it’s not what we expect.” Norris has encountered similar problems with the batch of blanks he recently received from Argentina and Australia.
Neal Norris, owner & shaper of Valley Isle surfboards
“There are a lot of gluing issues like dried glue on stringers,” he said. “The quality is on the low side. I just got some Australian blanks. They seem to be higher quality, but you have to be super careful. Shaping machines tear the foam very easily. You have to go real super slow with a hand planer.” Yet this might not be such a bad thing. According to Norris, not all of the repercussions from the loss of Clark Foam’s overwhelming influence on shaping may necessarily be bad. “The most important point here is that [the new blanks are] really testing the shaper’s ability,” said Norris. “A lot of shapers got so used to Clark Foam blanks being low tolerance, meaning they’re very close to the final shape. Blanks now are a bit older school. They require a lot more shaping. “I’ve been shaping since the 1960’s, so it’s kinda fun for me,” he continued. “But rookies are having a tough time. You really have to know how to work a planer. I usually have a smile on my face when I’m shaping, but a couple of times I was bummed out. But it will probably be corrected. Some guys just turned back the blanks. It was really testing their abilities.” Many shapers here and on the mainland have already looked to China, where whole factories are gearing up to replace the production numbers only Clark could put out. Cheaper boards produced there have filled outlet giants like Costco for years, leading some to question whether shapers can still work like artisans. “Nothing will kill quality,” said Kinoshita. “You can find the best quality, if you pay for it. I pay a premium price for what I know is the best. My reputation depends on it. Reputable companies will end up buying the best. This whole thing is probably good for the industry.” MTW

urf fashion is an oxymoron.Ask any surfer what the latest trend is in
board shorts and you will promptly get a “Huh?” Surf wear is fashion’s anarchy, and the runways are green with envy. While the designers try to mimic the beach wear styles stealing aloha prints and the casual flair, nobody wears it or does it better than Maui. With beaches all around us, and surfing our most popular sport, the bikini has replaced the bra, the board short is the quintessential garment, and the beach towel your most important accessory.

From high tech quick dry fabrics to the old fashioned Birdwell shoe-string tie front, the market for trunks is whatever you want it to be. nything goes this season at the beach. Bright colors, soft colors, stripes, aloha

Logan Torricer and my lunch
Paradise Café Where you’ll forget you’re in a food court Lunch is the most underappreciated meal you can eat. Most people recognize that a good breakfast is necessary to start the day fresh, and there are few better delights than a rich, sumptuous dinner, but few take the time to really think through lunch. Occurring right in the middle of the day, a good lunch can return people to work or school refreshed and productive, while a bad one can leave them wasting the rest of the day as they suffer through a knotted stomach or worse.
Paradise Café Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, Kahului, 893-2233. $ I, too, fretted over lunch. Then I went to Paradise Café, located in the Queen Ka’ahumanu food court between Alexander’s and some Japanese place. Never again will I settle for quick burgers or two-item combos that make me choose between fried rice or chow mein. The thing about Paradise Café is that it’s actually a café, minus the quaint ambience, cramped tables and artsy clientele. They offer sandwiches on focaccia, portofino pasta salad, baked potatoes, soup in a bread bowl and gelato. Last week, Sam, Wendy and I stood gawking at the counter, alternately staring at the menu and tasting tiny
spoonfuls of the dairy-free strawberry, mango, chocolate, mint and coconut-flavored Maui Gelato. At last we decided. I opted for a BLT&A—bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado—sandwich on wheat with a cup of Portuguese bean soup. Sam and Wendy decided to split a turkey cranberry sandwich on squaw bread. We paid, got our tray and picked a choice table by the window overlooking the parking lot. I began by dipping my spoon into the soup. Ordering soup in a Styrofoam cup is always a dicey proposition—for some reason I always think of hospital cafeterias—but there was no need to worry. The soup was hot and full of beany goodness. As for my BLT&A, it was really, really good. And why not? They used thick bacon, lots of avocado and quality greens and tomato. And they weren’t afraid to leave the bread untoasted, either. If there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s a dry BLT on dry toasted bread. Sam and Wendy devoured their turkey cran sandwich, though not without at least one complaint. “The bread’s a bit dry,” said Sam of her half of the sandwich. “But really, where else can you get squaw bread in a food court?” You can order dessert—we went back for a couple cups of that wonderful gelato—but it isn’t really necessary. Each sandwich half comes topped with an “oatmeal chocolate chipper,” a small but terribly tasty cookie. All lunches should end so well. MTW

Minister of Laughter: Frank De Lima Friday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater [COMEDY] It’s hard to describe the unique brand of Hawaiian style comedy, depicted by the outrageous characters of such popular comedians as Da Braddahs, Augie T. and Mr. Frank Wilcox Napuakekaulike De Lima. But since nearly all of his 13 comedic albums have received Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, De Lima seems to be the natural authority in the matter of Hawaiian humor. In an interview on acidlogic.com, deLima states: “Hawai’i’s ethnic humor developed in the plantation days when people had humility, which they needed because if they weren’t humble, the pride everybody has could have turned into arrogance and hatred and violence. Instead it turned into humor. And there was a lesson that went out through the years. Most people can handle Hawai’i’s humor, not everybody. But during the plantation days, most people could find humor in the different ethnic behaviors, and that’s why there was peace.” But I believe it was also Frank deLima who said, “Don’t sneeze when you eat saimin… ‘Cause the soup’s gonna go all over your clothes and the noodles are gonna come out of your nose…” So you know, there’s always that. Tickets: $25, half price kids 12/under. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

Kamen Rider V3 Saturday, 11 a.m. and 12 noon at Border’s Books in Kahului [KEIKI] Kamen Rider V3, Kikaida, and an android or two will be available for picture taking, and Miyauchi and Ban Daisuke will sign autographs on copyright cleared items. If you watch the Power Rangers, you’ll have a clue of what the characters look like. Not one of the rangers, more like one of the villains, bug-eyed creatures from another world. Likewise, if you have watched anime, you know the basic story line. Lots of action! Although, maybe I’m alone on this one, but sometimes the story is hard to follow. If it’s just me I’ll shut up. Actually… No. No, I won’t. It’s kinda like on Wedding Singer, “Well, I have a microphone. And you don’t. So you will listen to every damn word I say!” But mine is written. I suppose you could stop reading. Okay, the point is you can meet the characters. [HEIDI KING]

More Pumping, Less Dumping Saturday, 6:30 a.m. at Ma’alaea Harbor [PROTEST] For many, many months now, the Pump Don’t Dump group has yelled, complained, bitched, moaned and in general made people aware that it’s not a good thing for commercial tour boats to be dumping raw sewage into Hawaiian waters. With the state and county now funding a pump truck at Ma’alaea Harbor until a proper pump-out facility is built, there’s absolutely no excuse for any boats there to be releasing their sludge into the ocean. Most boats are pumping, but there are still some holdouts. Hence this morning protest, to try to bring pressure on the last of the dumpers. For more information, visit www.pumpdontdump.com. That you actually ENJOYED it too.
It may not make sense, but it’s true. We’d like NOTHING better than to sit down with you and go over your W-2’s and 1099’s and other tax information. Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff. email: Web:

Talking with Gretchen Mol Gretchen Mol is stunning for her uninhibited spot-on portrayal of the famous 1950’s S&M pin-up queen in director Mary Harron’s new partial biopic The Notorious Bettie Page. Although limited by a script that reveals more skin than depth of character, Mol inhabits Page with a purity of intent that carries the film. She doesn’t just elevate the source material; she imbues it with a virtuosic savior faire that transcends Page’s enigmatic spirit. I recently spoke with the 33-year-old actress from Deep River, Connecticut at Manhattan’s Regency Hotel: MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Do you think that Bettie Page considered what she did a feminist act? GRETCHEN MOL: I knew because I’d read interviews and heard her speak about this, that she didn’t take that on herself. She didn’t try to do anything but her job and just happened to have this non-judgmental spirit. Again, people were always able to look at Bettie Page and see what they wanted her to be. She gave them that permission to do so. In that way she’s a feminist. I don’t think she was ever trying to be consciously.

Pin-Up Queen
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Was she ahead of her time or was she simply naïve? I don’t think she was naïve. I think it was the attitude of the 1950’s to pick and choose what you looked at deeply. Nobody was going to force that on her. She didn’t really come in contact with the people that were looking and using her photographs; for her it was a job. I think she was doing her job
the best she could. And she was non-judgmental about the people that were interested in bondage fetish.
Was it hard to figure out what she was thinking? It was because there were a lot of contradictions. Like you said about being naïve, there’s something that seemed naïve, but there was another part of her that seemed, not calculated at all, but very much aware. But not necessarily wanting to look at it. Her psychology was very interesting, and the film, because it’s so subtle about that, doesn’t say A happened, so B is this way. It wasn’t a typical biopic.
What differences do you perceive between women then and now? I really don’t think the differences are that great. She was always a small town girl without a real sense of home. Now, she would be probably be the same way, but there was a limit to what she was going to do. She could have done stag films, but she didn’t. She could have slept with a producer to advance her movie career but she didn’t. It would be interesting to see what she would do today.
Why do you think Bettie Page has lasted this long? It’s all the dichotomies, the juxtapositions, kind of bumping up against each other. That’s what Bettie represents. She’s kind of whatever people needed her to be. She had a quality that other models didn’t have that’s still kind of a mystery to me. That’s what I love about the film, too. It retains the enigmatic quality of Bettie Page. It lets her still be what they need her to be. MTW

New This Week OVER THE HEDGE - (PG) - Animation, Comedy - Bruce Willis is the voice of a raccoon that helps woodland creatures adapt to gathering food in their new surroundings when a suburb takes over their forest and their food supply diminishes. It’s cute and cuddly and full of cheap laughs. 80 min. (Heidi King) DA VINCI CODE - (PG13) - Thriller - You’ve read the book, seen the History Channel documentaries and listened to the Vatican’s bitching—now see the Ron Howard-directed adaptation! Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Ian McKellen star in this gripping tale of murder and intrigue that will shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church! Well, maybe rattle them a little. 149 min. (Anthony Pignataro)
Now Showing AKEELAH & THE BEE - (PG) - Drama - This is the story of an 11-year-old girl who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. (Samantha Campos) AN AMERICAN HAUNTING - (PG13) - Thriller - Supposedly based on a true story. In 1818 a ghost, refered to as “Old Kate” took up residency in the Bell household. C’mon, is that the best Mona Lisa impression you can do? all, starring Rob Schneider, a pack of SNL alumni, and that guy from Napoleon Dynamite. Mel the Millionaire Nerd hatches a plan to form a team of pariahs to do battle against the toughest little league team in the state and enlists the aid of Gus and his misfit friends, Ritchie and Clark. Gus’s prowess on the diamond earns him the adoration of the dweeb masses, but what happens when they learn that he was once a bully? I think I smell Oscar. 87 min. (Will Watkins) HOOT - (PG) - Family, Adventure - No, it’s not about large breasted females in tight white shirts and orange shorts. It’s about about a young boy that moves from Montana to Florida and finds himself defending the lives of endangered owls. Sure to be a heart-warming, eye-welling good time. 90 min. (HK) ICE AGE 2: THE MELTDOWN - (PG) - Animation I’m sorry but I loved the first one. Suprisingly, the sequel may just be up to par. They’ve got the original voices for this unlikely group of pre-historic animals as they cope with a new set of rules due to the ice, y’know, melting. 90 min. (HK) JUST MY LUCK - (PG13) - Lindsay Lohan plays a college graduate that is just starting a career in the big city and she seems to have the best luck ever. Until she goes to a masquerade ball and somehow switches her luck with a guy she kisses. Watch her hunt him down. (HK) LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN - R - Thriller, Crime, Gangster - Josh Hartnett stars as Slevin, the victim of both an unfortunate name as well a case of mistaken identity, who finds himself in the crossfire of two warring New York Crime Bosses known as The Rabbi (Ben Kingsly) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). To further complicate matters, he must also stay one step ahead of the dogged Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and the nefarious assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis). Wackiness ensues. 110 min. (WW) MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III - (PG 13) Action/Adventure - Once again Tom Cruise plays super-elite spymaster Ethan Hunt, this time tasked with finding some uber-bad guy played by Philip
Seymour Hoffman. Expect the same big explosions, hot chicks and Ving Rhames that carried the previous MI flicks. 126 min. (AP) POSEIDON - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - This ridiculous remake of a ridiculous film concerns a luxury ocean liner that gets hit by a tidal wave (uh huh) and rolls upside down (yeah, right) forcing survivors (led by Kurt Russell) to climb (or down, I suppose) the ship to the surface. 98 min. (AP) RV - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Family - Robin Williams plays Bob, a work obsessed guy that tricks his family into giving up their dream vacation to Hawai’i in exchange for a road trip in an RV. Bob only does this to please his boss, but his family doesn’t know that. Confusion, slap-stick comedy and the eventual realization that family is whats really important is inevitable. 98 min. (HK) THE SENTINEL - (PG 13) - Thriller - Think In the Line of Fire meets The Fugitive with a little 24 thrown in, kinda. Michael Douglas plays a veteran Secret Service agent wrongly accused of conspiring the kill the President and Keifer Sutherland plays his protégé charged with bringing him—the wrongfully accused agent, not the President— down, I think. I have a headache. 108 min. (AP) SILENT HILL - (R) - Horror - A little girl does some sleep walking and talks about a place she’s never been. So her mother decides it’ll help the girl if they go to the place, a town called Silent Hill. The girl goes missing and her mom has to go up against the forces of evil. Moms are hardcore when it comes to their babies. 127 min. (HK) STICK IT - (PG13) - Comedy - The writer of Bring It On has come up with another movie with a similar concept. A rebel girl that fled the life of gymnastics gets in trouble with the law and is forced to go back to it. It’s a hard knock life. 103 min. (HK) UNITED 93 - (R) - Drama - This is a dramatization of the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001 hijacking and crash of United Airlines Flight 93, as well as a best guess at what occurred on the plane itself. Movie audiences are already freaking out over the trailer, so you can imagine how they’ll receive the movie itself. 90 min. (AP) THE WILD - (G) - Animation, Family - A young lion is transported to Africa from the New York City zoo...by mistake—then freed, also by mistake. His loving ‘ohana from the zoo band together to try to locate and bring him back. Does anyone else think this seems a lot like Madagascar? The difference is this is Disney and that was Dreamworks. Kinda like A Bugs Life and Antz. 94 min. (HK)

On Your Mark Talking with Mark Yokoyama of Lyri-Cool Productions You all know Mark Yokoyama. Lyri-Cool Productions. Maui Girls CD. Maui Style 2nd Edition. If you listen to local music and participate in the cult following of KPOA, you definitely know the man behind a large amount of our local music. Or you think you do. I had the pleasure of spending time with him in his music studio in Kahului.
momma’s boy, but at 16 she kicked my ‘okole out.
MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Where were you born?
So when did your life turn around?
MARK YOKOYAMA: I was born on Oahu. Downtown. Hotel Street. The Ghetto. I lived in the ghetto—five projects on each corner. Each of them didn’t like each other, there was MWH next to Kukui Garden, and believe me, brah, it was no garden.
When was this? It was the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. We saw prostitutes coming from the store alley with needles sticking out of their arms—many of them young girls who would go to school during the day and sell their bodies at night. Their girlfriends—just as young as they were— would watch the baby, while the mother would be downtown trying to get enough money to buy diapers and milk.
I just can’t believe that this happened here, it sounds like the Bronx or Washington D.C. Yeah, I know. Now ice is an epidemic in Hawai’i. Just think, one million people on a dot on a map, just a little dot. We’ve got houses, on top of houses, on top of mountains. It’s a crazy life. I was a drug addict—coke, ice, speed, you name it. I was a
Where did you go? I was homeless. I used to steal cars. Not to sell them, but to have a dry, warm place to sleep. I had a screwed-up attitude. Everyone was like that. I just thought this is life and this is how it is.
In prison. I got a call from my brother crying saying my mom was sick and she wasn’t going to make it. I realized I was helpless, and I took her for granted. I prayed. I asked God not to take her... My mother came out of her coma and I thank God and Jesus for more time. In prison I stayed in my cell, read books, wrote to my mom, worked the system. In two-and-ahalf years, I came out with a vengeance. I got a $6 an hour job delivering seafood, smelling like blood and guts, busting my ‘okole, and I finally went home. My mom’s said she had been waiting for that day.
How did you break into the music industry? Well, I wanted to be an artist so I put an album together. The songs were terrible. It cost a lot of money. I realized I could do that myself—make music without charging so much. I’m a hustler but today, it’s a legal hustle. I got da kine tactics and knowledge from the street.
Yokoyama, legal hustler still better than what my life was back then. But, I want to do more.
What is it you’d like to do? I want to set up a place, with positive energy for the youth. There is so much talent on the street, but to them their dreams are unattainable. If I had a successful role model and if I knew there was a better way, maybe I would not go through what I went through. I’m gonna tell my story. Everything I got, I earned.
And here you are. I understand you’re a one-man show. Yeah, four years later. I don’t even have a jaywalking ticket. I used to steal, lie, con, cheat and now people trust me to hold $50,000. I’m a high-paid middleman. I realize that the worst day of my life now is
Yeah, I produce, record, market and manage. I even do the designing of the artwork on the CDs. When people call to speak to the graphics department, I put
the phone down and pick back up say, “Graphics Department?” I do the same with people call to ask for sound engineering—“Hello, this is Mark, Engineering, how can I help you?”
So what’s up next for Lyri-Cool Productions? Well, we’ve got a lot of things going on right now. On May 23rd, Friday Eleneki will be releasing her album Magic. Also, be on the lookout this summer for Maui Style 3 featuring Chantelle, Chazar’e, and Shane—Hawaiian Homeboy. I just recently learned that I’m nominated for the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano music award for Best Compilation: Maui Style 2nd Edition and for Best Rock Album: Mana Ohana’s Journey. MTW

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You like to define things. You like knowing exactly where you stand in any situation, without lots of ambiguity and guesswork. However, for now you’ve got to let that shit go. The current situation can’t be defined, at least not yet; trying will just destroy it. Lower your horns and charge into the unknown. Let this thing be everything and nothing and anything, without even wondering (at least aloud) which. Enjoy it for whatever it is. It might turn out to be exactly what you want and need—and then some.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your playful obsession with your appearance has faded somewhat; you used to crave a lot more attention than you need now, and do nearly anything to get it. I’m glad you’ve evolved, but would you consider reverting to your old ways anyway, just for this week? The world around us is degenerating alarmingly rapidly into a horde of label-flaunting, unthinking and unutterably dull clones. I’m sorry to be so cynical, but most people are sheep. They need someone to give them “permission” before they can express their modicum of personality and individuality. Won’t you—just by boldly being your unique self—give it to them?
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Goddamn, I despise cigarette smoke. When someone whips out the cancer sticks—no matter how hot they are—it’s an instant turn-off. Everyone has their prejudices. I own mine proudly. What’s dangerous is when you’re not even aware of yours, or in denial about them. What kinds of (possibly unfair) judgments are you subjecting people to, Cancer? It’s okay to look at the world through a distorted lens— we all do, anyway. But if you’re going to look at your reality through thick, colored glasses, at least know what your prescription is.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) How strong are you, Leo? I’m not talking about proving you can ring the bell with the sledgehammer at the carnival’s jokey strength test. The most powerful forces arrayed against you all come from within. This is about overcoming your own efforts at self-sabotage, which at this point have become quite sophisticated and subtle. You know that if you could just get your shit together consistently, you’d be even brighter and shinier than you are now. What’s stopping you? It’s not your circumstances, despite what you tell yourself. It’s you. When are you going to stop doing that?
PLACING AN AD IS EASY! CALL 283-3260
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Screw that shit about keeping your enemies closer than your friends. It’s a good time to bring your friends in for some catch-up bonding, preferably far away from those who have it out for you. Focus especially on those long-lost friends you haven’t managed to see in years. Track them down. You need those people in your life. Start with a friendster-y networking website, google, hire a detective if you have to. Make time for this. It’s important. Rebuild fallen-down or burnt bridges this week; you’ll be thrilled and amazed at how many lands and spaces and loves they open to you.
Maui Recycling Service If not now, when?
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You know that thing about your greatest strength being your greatest curse (and vice versa)? This week’s lesson is all about that. What’s your chief talent? Versatility and adaptability. How is that bad? When you’re so used to bending and warping to fit into whatever the situation (or relationship, especially) requires of you that you’re no longer sure who you really are, or what you really want. Isn’t that what’s happened? Get your head straight this week, Libra, until you’ve figured out what you’re really about again.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) One of the reasons I love Scorpios is your willingness to try on lots of different masks and explore many (often extreme) sides to your personality. A problem occurs, however, when one of the masks becomes too comfortable, and you end up spending more time wearing it than is probably strictly healthy. I know this is part of you, and how you do life, diving deep into the most intense places you can find. But you’re missing out on a lot of other shit while you’re going there. Give it a break this week, Scorpio. Come up for air.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Eagerness is almost always a good thing. But every once in a while restraint has its benefits. For example, if you’re too keen to bite into that fresh slice of pizza before it’s cooled, you won’t get to taste anything except burnt tongue for the next day or two. Wait a minute and the possibilities are endless. This situation’s a bit like that boiling hot mozzarella atop the slice of deliciousness in front of you. Show the tiniest bit of self-control and you’ll be rewarded. Too gung-ho, though, and you’re just going to get burned.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I know it’s your competitiveness that drives you. But there have to be limits. You are amazing, and almost unstoppable—but there’s always going to be someone better. There’ll always be someone smarter, prettier, stronger, richer, more powerful, and so on. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t strive to be better. But run too hard at that brick wall and you may just knock yourself out of the race altogether. This week, give it a rest. Why not try just being the best you you can be, for a week? You can go back to trying to beat everyone else next week.

Sorry, Aquarius. I can’t write you a proper horoscope right now because I want to go lie in my hammock for a while, sip iced tea, and listen to music. You might find that a lot of other people don’t have time to take care of you this week, either, because they’re too busy taking care of their own comforts and needs. Use it as an excuse to grab some much-needed downtime of your own. No one will expect you to be on call while they’re relaxing. And if they do, screw that; they’re just fooling themselves.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You’re a drama queen and at the same time you’re not. You’re not dramatic, say, in the way a slighted Cancer or aroused Aries would be. But you do seem to find ways to feel hurt over things no one else would even think about. That sensitivity is a strength, mostly, but it can trip you up, especially when you’re dealing with one of the less insightful members of the zodiac (like an over-blunt Leo or a sliptongued Virgo). Try not to hold it against them when they hurt your feelings—without even knowing it, probably. You’ve got a point, but that doesn’t mean harping on it is a good idea. Let it go, if you can.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re not really better than everyone else. You just feel that way, and I’m sure it can look that way to you through your own very subjective perspective. Also, it certainly doesn’t help that you are better (or at least more awake, inspired, and interesting) than most people, as much as anyone can be compared to another. But be aware that your superiority complex—or anything that even smells like one— will get your ass kicked this week. Be humble, my dear, proud Ram. Be sweet and overflowing with humility and self-effacement. It’ll get you so much farther than bragging ever could. CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

Everyone knows it’s easier to dish out advice than to take it. And that it’s also easier to give advice to friends than to follow your own. So I thought I’d maybe try to consult myself with dilemmas I’ve had in the past with the knowledge I’ve gained in the years since. Hey, now I’m older, wiser and way more debauched—I mean, experienced—so why shouldn’t I follow my own advice?
Dear Holoholo Girl, I like a boy in my class. He is super fine. But he doesn’t even know I exist. I sent him a secret Valentine once but he just crumpled it up, lifted the lid on his desk and threw it inside. Sometimes I wait for him after school but when he comes out, he and his friends just hop on their Huffy dirt bikes and nearly run me over, cackling like hyenas. The Sadie Hawkins dance is coming up and I want him to go with me, because I just know we’re going to get married someday. We’re, like, totally destined 2 B 2-gether 4-ever. But first, how do I get him to notice me? -Seriously Crushing, 1982 Dear SC ‘82, It’s been my experience that guys, like monkeys, respond most to irregular bouts of affection interspersed with being ignored completely. It’s okay to show him you’re interested but then walk away and do the pogo on your own. And it’s possible he may never come around but so what? Unrequited love is as old as the hills. It’s also the stuff of great art. Literature, film and music have all benefited from the longing, unmet gaze of burning desire. Where would the world be without Dante’s The Divine Comedy, King Kong and the blues? Ah, but this is, like, totally not helping you right now, is it? It’s been said that love not reciprocated can lead to depression, anxiety, mood swings and stalking. But I say, all that lovelorn torture builds character. So get ‘em, girl! Keep rockin’ that side-ponytail and frosted pink lipstick and he’ll either come around, or you could be part of the next great American epic—like Monica Lewinski!
Dear Holoholo Girl, My boyfriend is constantly trying to get me to have a threesome with him and one of my girlfriends—or really, just any girl. I’m not opposed to the idea but going for my science degree at UC Santa Cruz has me busy with schoolwork. Plus, I’ve failed my first class—chemistry—not just once but three humiliating times. I fear between my boyfriend’s pressuring, my mom’s bragging to her friends about my impending “doctor” status, coinciding with my suddenly discouraging scientific ineptitude, maybe I won’t be able to please everyone and this is disappointing to me. Plus, the chicks here don’t shave and I find that slightly unattractive, not to mention unsanitary. -Scholastically Cracking, 1994 Dear SC ’94, While excessive partying and risqué socializing in college is to be expected, it sounds like you should be focusing more on the experimenting in your chemistry lab and less in your personal dysfunctional relationship. If he’s trying to help you experience more of life in a balance between the scholastic and the sensual, that’s one thing. But if he’s withholding his love and support for his own selfish gains while holding you back from your potential career, that’s entirely another. Besides, who the hell has a boyfriend while they’re going to college anyway? What the hell were you thinking??
Dear Holoholo Girl, I finally have a job I love—hurray! But while my mother has accepted the fact that I may not ever get married or have children, I am deeply disturbed by this knowledge. What if she’s right? I am happily single, but everywhere I look, success seems to be measured by how closely we achieve the (I believe) outdated American Dream: career, marriage, house, kids, and obscure kitchen utensils. Who says life can’t be fulfilling without all that baggage? - Single & Carefree (?), 2006 Dear SC ’06, I’m not sure what the question is here. But it sounds like YOU are the one who needs to accept how your life is and that you have ultimate control over the amount of happiness and “success” you achieve. And you may find that the conditions for happiness change over time—but that’s okay. Maybe this year it’s a Prada purse and a week barhopping in New York City, next year it’s a house in the country and a colored bullterrier named “Rufus.” Nobody, not even your mom, can ultimately judge how fulfilling your life is to you.
