I used to think Maui Time was about “being fair,” open, honest... showing ALL sides of a story, even when it was naked and covered with slime... I thought one of your main goals was to be unbiased and not just “reporting as you like” as the other major papers, TV stations and news media do, all to gain points for their side of an issue... Yet I am seeing more and more of your papers becoming one-sided, almost vindictive... You write about a “new” candidate in the May 18, 2006 Coconut Wireless as if she is the only one running, yet Nikhilananda has been in the running for months already, more active and more qualified than “your” choice... (in my opinion) but you write as if he doesn’t even exist! Perhaps you missed the ad he’s been running in your paper for weeks... You also talked about Pacific Biodiesel before as if everyone using biodiesel was having problems (“So Frustrating,” May 4, 2006)... In further reading though, it turns out it was only a couple people... Was there something “more personal” in here we missed? Need I go on? Is someone getting off the track at your paper and pushing for their personal gains instead of unbiased reporting, as you say you do? -Ben Williams, Kihei Anthony Pignataro responds: You say I’m not being fair, open or honest, yet you seem to be asking me to give favorable treatment to a candidate simply because he’s an advertiser. I can’t do that, but I can report on Lucienne de Naie’s candidacy because it’s “news”—she’s a longtime activist who just announced her first campaign for County Council. Nikhilananda is

someone who’s run—and lost—at least six previous political campaigns. As far as my biodiesel story is concerned, my point was never to rant that “everyone” using the fuel was experiencing problems, but to report that certain customers—including the County of Maui—seemed to be having trouble with it. And it was a difficult story to write, in part because I personally feel that alternative fuels like biodiesel are better than petroleum.

RIPS HOMELESS AGAIN First I want to say I love Maui Time, always right on and very informative. However, I was very disappointed to see that Carrie Courtney was given a full two pages to whine and throw a personal pity party (“Couch Surfing Flat Waves,” May 11, 2006)... Get a degree, stop bumming money off mom and dad, make your boyfriend and yourself be responsible for the choices you, not they, made and well, be an adult. You certainly appear old enough to know better. -Melissa Nelson, via email

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 17, 2006 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story about her approving $40 million to fight homelessness: “We have a 10-year plan to end homelessness. It is well thought out with all the stakeholders. We are not going to start throwing money around—that is not in the plan we all developed.”

CORRECTIONS In the May 25, 2006 story “Condoversy,” we got Prandini’s age wong. She’s 78. And in that same issue, we got the name of the chick in the photo for the food story “Hawaiian Moons” wrong. She’s Amber Watson.

Maui Time welcomes letters commenting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. We also reserve the right to edit your letters. Send your letters to the editor via e-mail (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 33 N. ehbrah@mauitime.com Just wanted to thank you so much for being such a considerate neighbor. And to thank you for letting your children play in the streets while you yell at everyone driving by to slow down. Thank you for reminding us time and time again to drive at a snail’s pace past your house while you carelessly race around on the same streets, which we’ve all seen you do countless times. Basically, I guess I’m thanking you for moving into our neighborhood and yelling at all the cars you see driving past our place. You know, I grew up in our neighborhood, and I don’t know if you realize it, but your house used to be a cow pasture that was filled with shit. Isn’t it amazing how the more things change, the more they stay exactly the same?

What she didn’t say: Now halfway through her fourth year as governor, campaigning for reelection, Lingle suddenly decides that she needs to end homelessness. The troubles plaguing the state Housing and Community Development Corporation (HCDCH)— which tries to house poor and homeless people—shows the state doesn’t know what to do. It’s splitting the agency into two agencies to become more “efficient,” yet nine years ago those same two agencies coalesced into the HCDCH for the very same reason. For years the number of homeless people throughout the state has been growing—reversing that trend will require lots of money, sure, but also a lot of attention, which Lingle hasn’t been willing to give so far.

Donald Dettloff’s surfboard fence

PHOTO: HOLLY HOKE

Nestled among the foliage in Haiku, Donald Dettloff is used to drawing a crowd with his unique fence. This North Shore landmark consists of someting like 300 surfboards, short and long, as well as windsurf boards. Dettloff says he gets a lot of attention for his surfboards, which surround half his property. “We get about a car a week, but usually if they see me they turn around real quick!” he says, laughing. Earnest and animated, Dettloff says he started building his surfboard fence four years ago as a fluke. “I used to scavenge surfboards from the old Makawao dump and fix them to sell,” the longtime island resident says. He began tying his surfboards to his fence to secure them from his brother-in-law, who accidentally tried to sell a board from Dettloff’s personal quiver. Liking the way it looked, he just kept tying. Today, surfboards of all colors and sizes outline his land. Dettloff says some of the boards are from the 1960’s and ’70s. One popular board colorfully proclaims “BAM!” with a large Superman logo. Dettloff says many people like to get their picture taken standing next to it. There are boards from Australia and California, and many boards previously ridden by surfers like David Husing, whose grave sits at Paukakalo. Friends and neighbors donated many of the boards, but an occasional pile of boards will appear mysteriously in his driveway. He doesn’t mind the random offerings; in fact, he welcomes them. “I’ll need about 300 more boards to finish it,” he says of his fence. But when he receives boards in fair condition, he’ll fix them up and loan them to young local rippers. Dettloff says a windstorm nearly ruined the fence two years ago, forcing him to storm-proof the boards. “I put a lot of thought into the arrangement,” he says. “It’s actually two fences.” The outer consists of tall windsurf boards and guns, while the inside is lined with short boards, leaving a gap for the wind. The boards stand at all heights, most yellowed by the sun, some shave ice-colored. There are many recognizable names: Kazuma, T&C, Mana, Naish, Timpone. Hana Highway Surf and HGA stickers are everywhere. The interior of Dettloff’s surfboard fence is as colorful and lively as the exterior. Several tall longboards flank

Dettloff and his fence his driveway, and his mailbox depicts yet more surf paraphernalia. The property is essentially a farm, which Dettloff claims is nearly self-sufficient. Old buoys hang from a starfruit tree, and the family sells lychee and citrus fruit. Dettloff says people come up to him nearly every day asking to buy beetlenuts, which he sells for 50 cents apiece. “We don’t advertise at all, but we do a good word of mouth trade,” he says. Tall palm trees shade the household’s many animals, including pit bulls, cows, horses, dwarf bunnies and fat pigs with names like Steak and Kalua. As I walk through, a pregnant Chihuahua begins hassling a bunch of day-old chicks. Dettloff’s children surf and participate in 4H and rodeo, and his wife is a prizewinning lei maker. Dettloff jokes easily that with all their projects, he’ll be ready for the apocalypse. Dettloff seems to have as many ideas as he does boards. He has tentative plans to open a fruit stand, using an old boat as a venue, and has a few artistic ideas for the many skegs and straps—“surfboard hard-

ware,” as he calls it—that he’s taken off his boards. He even thinks about taking down one board at a time from his fence, then taking it to the ocean so he can tell people he’s ridden each board. “I’m not a painter,” he says. “I can’t dance or sing, but I am an artist, and this is my art. This wasn’t easy, but I love it.”

Rough though it sometimes may be towards liquor licensees, you’ve got to love a Maui County agency that sends out a yearly newsletter called Booze Clues. And once again, the Liquor Control department doesn’t disappoint. The latest issue, labeled both “Spring 2006” and “June 2006,” has most of the usual features we’ve come to love—a warning that liquor licenses are about to expire, notification of the new Adjudication Board and Liquor Commission chairs and vice chairs and a note about the LC’s website. I say most, because my favorite part of the last issue—the gratuitous, unfunny blonde joke—is gone. Anyway, there is at least some humor in the latest issue. “With high school graduation and summer around the corner, the Department will increase random stakeouts and will again use minor decoys to insure licensees are in compliance with the liquor laws,” states the newsletter. “The Department has utilized minors in their enforcement program and several licensees have been caught selling or serving liquor to the minor decoys.” This is, of course, not a warning as some on the Board of Adjudication have implied, but just a statement of fact. By now nearly everyone on the island knows the LC operates minor decoy sting operations. A vague announcement once or twice a year that roving officers will be out sometime soon isn’t exactly worthy of a newsletter. But some kind of notification to licensees who passed sting operations? Nope. To do that, the LC would have change the way it operates. It might even have to change its rules. But by a remarkable coincidence, the newsletter says they’re going to do exactly that! “The Department has been working on proposed amendments to the Rules of the Liquor Commission and has received several proposals from licensees and organizations representing licensees,” says Booze Clues. “These proposals will be reviewed by the Liquor Commission and dates will be set for public hearings for the proposed rule amendments.” No idea when—LC Director Franklyn Silva has been mentioning them for the past year—but they’re sure to be fun. -Anthony Pignataro

COMPANY Monsanto Hawai’i Alexander & Baldwin Maui Electric Co. Maui Land & Pineapple Co. Tesoro Hawai’i Dowling Co. Hawaiian Telcom Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Wailuku Water Co. Makena Resort

This week marks the first appearance of Tesoro Hawai’i in the Maui 10, and, frankly, it’s about time. After all, it’s the largest oil refiner in the state, with 32 gas stations— four of which are on Maui. But we’re starting it out in the five spot for a couple reasons. The company is very powerful: the Honolulu Advertiser recently reported that Tesoro wouldn’t be meeting the state’s ethanol blend standards—a company spokesman said there were “manufacturing complications”—and state officials replied that not meeting the standards was fine by them. But at the same time, the company can be stymied by things like oil spills—like the one Tesoro caused last weekend off Barbers Point, which dumped about 2,000 gallons of precious, precious light crude into the briney deep. MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, May 24 Against all odds, Senate Bill 2133, which would ban the use of mercury in any vaccines administered in Hawai’i, has passed the state Legislature and is right now sitting on Governor Linda Lingle’s desk. Lingle hasn’t said what she’ll do with the bill, but given today’s Honolulu Advertiser story on the vaccine mercury debate, it wouldn’t be surprising if she let the bill fall into her circular file. Headlined “Health experts downplay risk, warn against vaccine ban,” the story gives more than the impression that a sober, unified scientific community is trying to stop grieving parents and uninformed luddites who think the ethyl mercury-laden Thimerosal preservative in vaccines has something to do with a recent spike in autism cases among children from destroying our state’s vaccine supplies. I won’t go into the details of the debate— you can read all about it in Maui Time’s April 20, 2006 story “When the Cure is Worse than the Disease”—except to say that the Advertiser piece completely ignored a few “health experts” who say it’s entirely possible that there’s a link between Thimerosal and autism. For instance, there’s Columbia University epidemiologist Dr. Mady Nornig; University of Arkansas professor of pediatrics Jill James; and Northeastern University pharmacologist Richard Deth. All three names come courtesy of an excellent November 2005 Columbia Journalism Review article that bemoaned mainstream press accounts of the Thimerosal debate similar to today’s Advertiser story.

THURSDAY, May 25 Andres Balmacda is a student at Lahainaluna. Balmacda, though just 15, has already achieved a distinction few of us enjoy: he’s become a life lesson. You see, according to today’s Maui News, a reef shark recently attacked Balmacda off the coast of Lanai—bit his left knee, to be exact, while Balmacda and a friend were spearfishing. The shark bit

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

Balmacda on the knee because Balmacda “poked” at the shark. Balmacda—and this part took real courage so don’t laugh—then told The Maui News that he was “kind of shocked” that the shark bit him. I find all this terribly amusing, not because I enjoy making fun of 15-year-olds, but because I am also a life lesson where sharks are concerned. You see, a few months ago I was sitting at a local bar with some friends, one of which was new to the island. And we were talking about sharks. “Mostly you find small reef sharks out there,” I said. “But every now and then you’ll hear about a tiger shark—those are the ones that’ll take your ear off.” And right then my two friends got real quiet for a moment, looked at each other, and then began snickering. A lot. “What’s so funny?” I asked. They responded with more snickering, which was now pretty much stifled laughter. Finally my friend from out of town leaned over. “That man sitting behind you only has one ear.” So Andres Balmacda, I may still have both of my knees intact, but I know your pain.

FRIDAY, May 26 Fascinating story in today’s Maui News about the Maui Planning Commission’s recent approval of Kihei plant nursery owner Dale Castleton’s zoning change. Headlined “Infested nursery gets OK from panel,” the story details how the commission gave its blessing to Castleton to expand his nursery property even though Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons offered considerable evidence that the plant nursery is not even close to being coqui frog-free. Castleton told the panel that he’s been working with the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) to eradicate the frogs, and while true, it does ignore the couple of years Castleton spent thumbing his nose at MISC and the county over the frogs (See Maui Time’s Jan 5, 2006 story “Infestation!” for more on this). Anyway, all this is fascinating because until this story, The Maui News had taken pains to portray Castleton’s plant nursery as anything but “infested” with coqui frogs. In fact, in a bizarre “clarification” to a letter to the editor in December that had alleged coqui frog

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

infestation at an unnamed Kihei nursery, The Maui News insisted that the nursery “states that it has worked with every interested federal, state and county agency to deal with the coqui frog problem” and left the issue at that.

SATURDAY, May 27 “We believe that God in fact is in control and indeed He does work all things for good for those who love the Lord.” That’s what former Enron boss Kenneth Lay said the other day after a jury of his peers found him guilty of conspiracy and fraud. For some reason, President George W. Bush, who used to call Lay “Kenny Boy,” hasn’t commented.

This is not, as election years go, a particularly happy one for the state Democratic Party, given their complete failure to find a strong candidate to run against Republican Governor Lingle and First District U.S. Representative Ed Case’s insistence on challenging entrenched U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) in the upcoming primary race. As such, there’s a lot of controversy over how the party should behave, if it’s to keep at least some control over the state. Headlined “Democrat urged to ‘get back to our values,’” there’s a story in today’s Honolulu Advertiser that at first, seems to violate one of the sacred rules of journalism. What “values” should the Democratic Party get back to? A living wage? Environmental support? Progressive income tax? Pacifism? Hell, we could go all the way back to support for slavery and opposition to a central bank if we wanted to. But then the story quoted U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie (D, 1st District). “Some people of this party and some across the country are trying to say to us that we have to change our values in order to appeal to the people of this country,” he said. “And what I say is, ‘No, we have to get back to our values to bring the people back in this country and where they want to be.” And that cleared everything up— see, the Democrats have no clue what values they stand for either.

TUESDAY, May 30 Me, I’d like to see a more progressive income tax. You?

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD CRISIS OF THE BLADDER The National Health Service office in Dundee, Scotland, has recommended toilet techniques for the estimated onethird of the population that suffers from bowel and bladder dysfunction, according to an April report in The Times of London. The pamphlet, “Good Defecation Dynamics, lists preferred breathing habits and describes the proper, upright, seated posture for effective elimination (“Keep your mouth open as you bulge and widen), and encourages support for the feet, perhaps “a small footstool.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT Earlier this year in separate incidents, two physical education teachers at Ernest Ward Middle School in Pensacola, Fla., were arrested and charged with bribery for allowing students to avoid gym classes by paying the teachers money. Tamara B. Tootle, 39, charged in April, allegedly gave students credits at $1 per student per class, and Terence Braxton, 28, arrested in February, pleaded guilty in May to a similar scheme, admitting to making at least $230.

MORE SIDE BUSINESSES A highly publicized attraction of the Isdaan restaurant in Gerona, Philippines (according to a March Reuters dispatch) is its “wall of fury, against which diners can vent frustrations by smashing things, with fees ranging from the equivalent of 30 U.S. cents for a plate up to $25 for an old TV set. And in July, according to BBC News, British farmer David Lucas will be forced by European Commission rules to give up his lucrative sideline of building gallows for Zimbabwe and other governments that still employ

hangings. Lucas’ single gallows sells for the equivalent of $22,000, and the MultiHanging Execution System, mounted on a trailer, goes for about $185,000.

CUTTING EDGE SCIENCE In April, noted surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub and a team at Ormond Hospital in London re-started and re-inserted the original heart of a 12-year-old girl after it had been in storage for 10 years while she lived with a donated heart. Because the donated heart was finally showing signs of rejection, Dr. Yacoub decided that the original, which was removed because of acute inflammation, might have repaired itself enough to work again.

And Arizona gubernatorial candidate Mike Harris donated $100,000 of his own money to his campaign in April, six months after successfully begging a judge to cut his $2,000-permonth child-support payments in half (and conceding that he had not disclosed that he owed his ex-wife $44,000 more from a property sale). Maui has no more precious natural resource than its ocean. How we use it, and pollute it, affects every aspect of life on our island. To give you an idea of the ocean’s importance, as well as many fine tips on how to respect it, we’re presenting selected excerpts from David Helvarg’s new book 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, published by Maui’s own Inner Ocean Publishing Company in Makawao (www.innerocean.com), along with special tips at the end of each excerpt telling you how you can help on Maui. The president of the Blue Frontier Campaign (www.bluefront.org), Helvarg has written extensively on ocean ecology, as well as the AIDS epidemic and fighting in Northern Ireland and Central America, for the Los Angeles Times, Popular Science, The New York Times, Sierra and The Nation. He’s also produced more than 40 documentaries for PBS, The Discovery Channel and others. On June 13, Helvarg will appear at the Maui Ocean Center in Ma’alaea as part of a nationwide book tour. From 1-3 p.m. he’ll sign books, then give a lecture at 6 p.m. The event is free but seating is limited. For more information please call 270-7075. -The Editors

Sail on an Ocean-Friendly Cruise Ship Avoid vacationing on a floating source of pollution. While ocean liners were once the major transportation for people crossing oceans to work and emigrate, today most people fly, and the old steam liners have been replaced by a new generation of cruise ships built for fun. More than 200 modern cruise ships now carry more than 10 million vacationers on the world’s oceans every year, including more than seven million United States residents, according to industry statistics. These floating vacation palaces, some carrying more people than an aircraft carrier, can be found in every ocean environment from the Arctic seas to the coral reefs of the tropics. As the primary customers of an industry expected to double its passenger load by 2010, American passengers can play a significant role in making sure the ships celebrate the sea and don’t pollute it. A typical 3,000 passenger cruise ship on a one-week voyage generates one million gallons of “gray water” (from sinks, showers, and laundries); more than 200,000 gallons of sewage; 25, 000 gallons of oily bilge water; more than 100 gallons of hazardous waste (from dry cleaning, photo processing, and other chemical activities); 50 tons of garbage (plastic, paper, cardboard, food and glass); and as much diesel exhaust as several thousand cars. Such a ship also contributes to the spread of invasive species from pumped out bilge water. Passengers often believe that the ship’s waste is treated or stored for land removal, but in fact most of it is dumped at sea, sometimes illegally. One of the worst impacts of cruise ships may be their discharge of nutrient-rich sewage around coral reefs that thrive in a low-nutrient environment; this destructive method of sewage disposal encourages the growth of algae, which in turn smother and kill coral reefs. Things can and must change. In 2004, Royal Caribbean pledged to install advanced wastewater treatment systems on its entire 28-ship fleet within the next 15 years. A small number of cruise ships also use gas-turbine engines that reduce harmful air pollutants by up to 90 percent. Alaska, Maine and California have passed laws restricting sewage dumping in their waters, and a national Clean Cruise Ship bill to set higher environmental standards for the industry has been introduced in Congress. Several ocean conservation groups, such as such as Oceana and Blue Water Network, are conducting public education campaigns to help reform the industry. But the greatest force for change can be the millions of Americans who are more than 70 percent of the industry’s customers.

On Maui… To report sewage dumping, call the U.S. Coast Guard’s pollution hotline at 808-842-2606. The Mayor’s Office final Cruise Ship Task Force report, released Aug. 15, 2005, is available at www.co.maui.hi.us/mayor/cstf.htm. A list of local commercial tour boats that dump their sewage in open waters—as well as a list of those who have their waste pumped out responsibly while in dock—is available at www.pumpdontdump.com, which also has plenty of information on how you can help end the dumping of raw sewage in Hawaiian waters.

Use Less Plastic The plastic that finds its way to the ocean never stops polluting. Plastic food wrappers, bags, balloons, bottles, cigarette filters and packaging, monofilament fishing nets and line, Styrofoam pellets and other objects make up about 60 percent of the trash found on beaches and about 90 percent of the debris found floating in the world’s oceans. Bits of plastic are absorbed or eaten by jellyfish, finned fish, turtles, birds, marine mammals, and other creatures, who mistake the pieces for food. Stranded seals and turtles have been found with their stomachs so full of plastic that they are unable to feed and are starving. Seabirds that mistake plastic pellets for food feed them to their chicks. After a major retail chain store opened on St. Thomas in the U.S Virgin Islands, I noticed that the ferry channel between St. Thomas and nearby St. John was littered with floating bags from the store. Plastic fishnets and cargo strapping entangle sea lions and other creatures, slowly strangling them as they grow larger. Plastic “ghost nets” discarded or lost at sea from fishing boats continue to ensnare and kill marine wildlife, sinking with the weight of their kill until gases formed by the decaying animals float the nets back up to kill again. Unlike cotton fishing nets, these nets never dissolve. While oil spills are a terrible environmental threat, oil is not nearly as destructive as the accumulation of everyday plastic items; oil eventually biodegrades, but plastic lasts forever. Through a process called photo degradation, sunlight slowly breaks down plastic polymers into pellets and fine dust. A study by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation found that plastic dust in parts of the North Pacific Ocean weighs six times more than zooplankton, the tiny animals that form the base of the marine food web. Marine plastic also acts as a toxic sponge, absorbing pollutants in the water such as PCBs and DDT. It concentrates these poisons tens of thousands of times more than seawater can. When consumed by fish, this poisonous plastic dust becomes part of the food web, increasing the toxic load in the flesh of tuna, billfish, sharks, and other top predators that humans then consume. Studies are now underway to see how these toxins may affect the development and reproduction of marine animals. Researchers who’ve been tracking marine debris believe plastic in the ocean may be one of the most alarming and least known environmental stories of our time. An international dumping treaty prohibits all overboard disposal of plastics from ships and boats, but the greatest “pulse” of active debris into the ocean comes from land-based human activities, particularly our habit of discarding plastic packaging material, plastic water bottles and plastic toys. Even plastic bags thrown in the trash and taken to the landfill may be carried by the breeze or out to sea. At the end of World War Two, plastic was a new creation that, like rayon, was seen as a way to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of rubber and silk. Today every American tosses out about 65 pounds of plastic a year. By reducing demand for plastic and limiting its use to essential purposes we can help save the greater part of our blue planet.

On Maui… Pu’unene resident and jeweler Mckenna Hallett hates plastic and recycling so much she’s created her own website (www.stoprecycling.com). Check it out for lots of cool ideas on how to stop relying on disposable goods in your life.

Don’t Exploit Sea Creatures for Vanity’s Sake Heed Jacques Cousteau’s warning: “The sea is not a bargain basement.” From coral jewelry to coral calcium, nautilus shells to ground seahorse, turtle oil to shark liver oil, a range of decorative items and supposed health products from the sea are creating profitable markets while depleting the ocean’s natural bounty. “Semiprecious” black corals are heavily exploited for jewelry even though they’re protected by many nations. To collect deep-ocean pink corals, which take hundreds of years to grow, chains are dragged across the sea bottom, and the broken pieces of coral that become caught in their links are then used for jewelry making. Left behind is the rubble of unique, once-living ecosystems. More than 100 million slow-breeding sharks are killed every year for their fins, which are used in a tasteless but expensive (and thus high status) soup popular in China. Shark body parts are also used in so-called health products popular in the West, including shark liver oil and shark cartilage. The unsubstantiated benefits claimed for these products in fighting cancer led to a government warning and court injunction against one manufacturer. By protecting marine ecosystems we’re also protecting a biological treasure trove of potential cures and treatments for human ills that can be harvested without abusing the sea. Two widely used drugs--Acyclovir, which treats herpes, and AZT which fights the HIV-AIDS virus--are derived from compounds first identified in marine sponges. Many other potentially useful drugs are now being developed from marine organisms, including cancer-fighting compounds from soft corals, anti-inflammation chemicals from sea feathers, virus-killing proteins from sea grass molds, and painkillers from cone snails. Scientists involved in prospecting for these promising new biological treatments are also working to synthesize them in the lab, in order to protect rather than deplete the marine sources and habitats that produce them.

On Maui… The Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council and Richard Grigg, a University of Hawai’i professor of marine biology, monitors all black coral harvesting in local waters. Currently, Aluani’s Black Coral Jewelry (www.mauiblackcoral.com) sells black coral items and operates the only local black coral harvesting boat.

Dive Responsibly Take only pictures and leave bubbles, while exploring underwater wonders. It’s been more than half a century since Jacques Cousteau and his friend Emile Gagnan invented the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (scuba) that allows a diver to swim freely and weightlessly through the water, and, in Cousteau’s words, “feel like you are an angel.” Today, diving and snorkeling have become hugely popular activities, with some five to 10 million Americans scuba-certified and 2 million actively diving on a regular basis. Among the certifying organizations that train people are the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). Both teach safe and responsible diving practices, and no one should don diving equipment without having passed these or similar professional courses. Having become certified some 20 years ago, I’ve witnessed changing conditions on our reefs, in our kelp forests, and in many other parts of our ocean, usually not for the better. I’ve also found that, once exposed to the wonders of our seas—the colorful diversity and mind-boggling variety of life underwater—divers and snorkelers often become leading advocates for the protection and restoration of marine wilderness. Ironically, through careless behaviors, lack of experience or lack of awareness, underwater visitors can also damage the very wonders they go below the surface to enjoy. In the early days, divers focused a lot on spearfishing and collecting. But sharp declines in abalone, sheepshead and other once-popular marine prey in areas like California have taught local divers to be careful stewards of the marine wilderness they value. Today, far more divers are shooting pictures than spearguns as they seek ways to explore Jacques Cousteau’s “silent world” without harming it.

On Maui… Every July volunteer divers and snorkelers jump in the water for the Great Annual Fish Count. The idea is to learn not just the numbers and locations of the various creatures that live in the ocean, but how to interact with them responsibly. Dives will take place all over the island and the surrounding waters. For more information, call Liz Foote at 808669-9062 or email lfoote@maui.net.

Speak for the Seas at Local Public Hearings Active citizenship can help restore our oceans and coasts More than half the United States population lives near the seacoast, where development is booming (some say sprawling). In California, 80 percent of the residents now live in coastal counties. Of the nation’s 20 fastest growing counties, 17 are coastal; of the 20 largest cities, 14 are coastal. Cities and townships are where most decisions about growth and planning are made. That’s why they are such vital government links in ensuring that your coast and ocean are protected. Don’t think you have to travel to Washington or your state capital; you can affect government decisions by attending local public hearings. Local zoning boards set building and land use standards that can determine the impact of construction and development on coastal waters and the watersheds that feed into them. A zoning board meeting is a good place to speak out in favor of protecting local wetlands and recreational beaches and of setting high standards of environmental protection for your neighborhood. Departments of sanitation, public works departments, and sewage districts maintain services vital to healthy oceans, including sewage plants, sewage pipes, and storm drains. At these agencies you can advocate for the most advanced treatment to reduce pollution and make sure that the existing infrastructure isn’t being outstripped by growth. Public health departments track the safety of swimming water and locally caught fish but don’t always provide enough public warning or take precautionary measures unless they feel pressure from the public. Water boards allocate water resource use. Developer and agricultural interests often attend meetings of or serve on these boards, but too few people work with them to promote the benefits of maintaining free-flowing water for fish, wildlife and coastal habitat. Park departments establish, maintain and protect recreational beaches and coastal parks. Your good citizenship and participation at the local level can help keep our oceans and coasts healthy and abundant or restore them to that state.

On Maui… The Maui Planning Commission meets at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at the Kalana Pukui Building, 250 S. High St., Wailuku. For more information, call 270-7735. The Maui County Council meets at 9 a.m. on the first and third Friday of every month on the eighth floor of the Kalana O Maui Building, 200 S. High St., Wailuku. Agendas are posted at www.co.maui.hi.us/county/clerkSub/Agenda.php. For more information, call 270-7748. For a complete list of county commissions and agencies, visit www.co.maui.hi.us.

Eating is Knowing At Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar You can tell a lot about someone by the choices they make. Especially if they are choices made during dinner on a first date. More tellingly, if that first date happens to take place at Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar.

Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar 744 Front St., 661-9090. Open for lunch and dinner. $$$ The first decision is an important one and sets the tone for the rest of our evening: where to sit? The most obvious choice would be to dine on the roof, with its spectacular, under-the-stars ambience and glimmering views of the Auau Channel, Lanai and Lahaina Harbor. But that’s maybe a little too over-the-top romantic for a first date. We could sit inside the expansive dining room, with its plush décor and centrally located, all-glass exhibition kitchen and bake shop. But that’s maybe too distracting for this initial getting-to-knowyou scenario. We opted instead for the casual comfort and proximity to liquor at the enticing 47-foot raw oyster bar. Right away, my date showed his confidence with the menu by putting in an order for their ahi poké—one of his favorites, he said—before our bartender even had a chance to acquaint us with the specials. After being informed of the six selections of oysters available, my date chose the medium-point, meaty oysters from Washington over the highly recommended, sweeter ones from Japan. A bold, impressive move—one that proved to be in my date’s favor as the oysters and poké were some of the best I’d had recently. Apparently realizing his knack with successful ordering, my date also suggested we have the Tellicherrypepper-crusted ahi drizzled with wasabi aioli. The pepper gave a unique and crunchy kick to the melt-in-your-mouth quality of the seared ahi. I was swooning.

But the hardest decision was yet to come—the entree. LSG&OB offers an eclectic array of Euro-American fare with a PacRim influence that’s big on seafood and interesting combinations. And the choices are tough, with items like coriander-cumincrusted ahi with stirfried vegetables served atop saffron risotto and wasabi butter. Or the orange-dusted jumbo prawns over butternut squash ravioli with brown-butter sage vinaigrette. Who could resist the cashew-coconut-crusted opakapaka on habañero mashed potatoes with papaya jam chutney? Of course, aside from the surf there’s also turf options, like the firecrackerglazed lamb chops or slow-roasted, double-cut Mongolian pork chops served with braised red cabbage and mustard demi. Or there’s also grilled tenderloin served with Cambozola cheese, caramelized onions, roasted shallot mashed potatoes and a house-made Worcestershire sauce. But my date, already proving himself to be a man with a propensity to go against the grain, lingered over the fresh semolina pasta selection. Would it be the lobster ravioli or linguine with clams, jumbo prawns and Portuguese sausage in roasted tomato jus? Perhaps the fettuccine with grilled chicken, shiitake mushrooms, crispy pancetta and julienne snow peas? Not this time. With a calm, assured finesse, my date quietly shut his menu and ordered the potato gnocchi with country ham, shiitake mushrooms, English peas and fresh tomatoes in a light cream sauce. Although at first I thought this dish sounded somewhat less dazzling than the others, in actuality it tasted like a bowl of frosted doughnuts—a good thing for someone like me, who would eat a bowl of frosted doughnuts for dinner every night. In the end, I can’t really tell you what all this means about my companion and our first date. But I do know that I am ready for a second date—with Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar. MTW

Legalize It? Saturday, noon to sunset at Baldwin Beach Park [POLITICAL/CONCERT] I don’t smoke marijuana. I have, of course, but it’s been a really long time. For me, the experience of being stoned never quite lived up to the romantic notions I had about getting high. Except for the times when I’d forget all my worries and laugh like the guy at the beginning of the Gorillaz’ “Feel Good, Inc.” Yeah, that was cool. Except that it usually ended with more worries, such as “Did I just pee my pants? I don’t see any pee on my pants, but it really feels like I did.” That said, my aversion to marijuana—unlike my decision not to drink—has not been supported by any evidence that pot turns people into monsters. If anything, I find people more tolerable when they’re stoned. I even encouraged my dear grandmother to experiment when she lived in Mendocino, where it was legal to “grow your own” (she declined, I think). Now it’s time for Maui—led by the freedom fighters of “Democracy in Action”—to join the ranks of the open-minded, and to that I say, “Far out, man.” All that’s needed is a few more signatures, which is where the “action” part of Democracy in Action comes in. For those of you who haven’t yet signed D.I.A.’s two circulating petitions, they’ve made it easy for you by organizing an amazing free concert, featuring Crazy Fingers, Vince Esquire, Gomega, Khrinj, Ras Gabriel & 4-Word and many others, at which you can make your voice heard. So much for the myth about marijuana destroying your motivation! ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Farm to Table Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Surfing Goat Dairy [FOOD] Have you ever seen a goat surfing? I know I’ve seen a dog do it, with some assistance. It seems like their hooves could be a disadvantage for a goat in this sport. Oh, wait. It’s not a goat surfing event. It’s a Surfing Goat Dairy hosted event! How silly of me. Ali’i Kula Lavender and Surfing Goat Dairy join together to raise funds for Maui Food Bank at the Best of Upcountry: Farm to Table food event. Delicious foods, pony rides, chef demonstrations, local produce, and goat petting promise to be a bucking good time. Admission is $10 by the car load and don’t forget your canned food donations for the Maui Food Bank. The Dairy is located at 3651 Omaopio Rd. Call 878-2870. [HEIDI KING]

Saturday, 6 p.m. at Viewpoints Gallery, Makawao [ART] There are some to whom the phrase “vanishing boundaries” likely means nothing more than the desired result of buying drinks for the opposite sex. These are the people who think a “Monet” is a seemingly attractive potential mate who, under closer inspection, turns out to be quite flawed. To the enlightened artists being featured in Viewpoints Gallery’s “Luminosity” exhibit, vanishing boundaries has an entirely different meaning, and the only Monet worth mentioning is Claude. One of the original French Impressionist painters, Monet helped introduce the technique of placing light or dark colors with similar hues together to create a visually stunning effect. The result is a literal vanishing of the boundaries between the colors, making them appear to glow. Richard Nelson, a local artist and teacher, studied this phenomenon at Yale under Josef Albers, a pioneer in the study of the interaction of colors. On Saturday, Nelson and seven others—Douglas Chun, Alejandro Goya, Kari McCarthy, Joelle Perz, Robena, John Shoemaker, and Sally Worcester—will be on hand for a symposium from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. (reservations required), followed by an opening reception at 6 p.m. to discuss their works (which include prints and blown glass, as well as paintings) and educate the public about the visual gift of color. Just think—after this exhibit, your topics of conversation will include more than your conviction that the new Budweiser with ginseng, caffeine, and guarana is healthier than milk. The Luminosity Exhibit runs June 1-28. Viewpoints Gallery is located at 3620 Baldwin Ave. in Makawao. For info, call 572-5979. Shown: “Salt Spring Recollection” by Dick Nelson. [COREY NIELSEN]

A Quan To-Do Saturday, 7 p.m. at The Studio Maui [ART] She used to design album covers. Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin and Grateful Dead have all used her creative expertise to give the ultimate visual to their music. So she started her own graphic design company, working with the top labels in the biz. Then she diversified and launched a glossy magazine, Urban Mozaik, promoting cross-cultural understanding. But then in 2000, Carolyn Quan moved from New York to Maui and refocused. Yep, that tends to happen when you leave the Big Apple for the pineapple. Ha! Now her signature work deals in photographs of people, animals and nature that are collected into fine art collages with an almost mystical, spiritual beauty. At this exhibit opening, Quan will talk about her creative digital collage techniques, while you mingle, gaze at all the pretty pictures and nosh on pupus and wine. The Studio Maui is located at Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Rd. For more info, call 575-9390 or visit www.thestudiomaui.com. Shown: “Dragonfly Dreams” by Carolyn Quan.

Thursday, June 8, 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater, MACC [COMEDY] Alison Arngrim, the child star who played Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie, brings her onewoman act to the MACC. At 15, Arngrim was already taking the stage as a stand up comic but when her friend was diagnosed with HIV in the ‘80s, she found that her sense of humor could work as a healing agent. Now, after fundraising and educating galore, she is taking time out so that you too can experience her outrageous wit and gain a whole new perspective on growing up in “the Biz,” telling about her life as everyone’s favorite toxic pre-teen brat, complete with petticoats and ringlets. Prepare for some serious dishing of the dirt on Hollywood, TV land in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and much more. Tickets: $18, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Maui AIDS Foundation. Call 242-7469. MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Stealing Suburbia Woodland creatures fight SUV culture Co-directors Tim Johnson (Antz) and Karey Kirkpatrick (the film’s screenwriter) make sly commentary on the suburbanization of America with a computer-animated kid’s comedy notable for its ingenious voice cast that includes Bruce Willis as a con-artist raccoon named RJ and Garry Shandling as Verne, a conscientious turtle. RJ the loner raccoon makes a terrible mistake when he attempts to steal a wealth of packaged food from Vincent (Nick Nolte), a hibernating bear, one week before his spring awakening.

Over The Hedge

★★★★★ Rated PG/87 mins.

Vincent demands under threat of death that RJ replace the accidentally destroyed food in one week when he ceremoniously awakens from his slumber. RJ convinces a family of possums, a skunk, and a turtle to take advantage of the suburban sprawl that has suddenly sprung up around their hedge-walled enclave to plunder vast quantities of processed junk food from their human neighbors. But homeowner’s association president Gladys (Allison Janney) makes big trouble by hiring a militaryminded exterminator calling himself “The Verminator” (Thomas Haden Church—Sideways) to lay waste to the little critters. RJ gets a lasting lesson in the ethics of familial trust from his newfound clan before the story is over. As with all modern animated movies, half of the fun of watching them is associating the camouflaged actors with the eccentric characters onscreen. Steve

Carell’s zippy vocal interpretation is especially inspired as Hammy, a hyperactive squirrel whose superfast antics give the story’s climax an unexpected hook when he’s suddenly able to move so quickly that the Earth’s orbit veritably stalls. Nick Nolte’s presence as Vincent the bear is perhaps the most recognizable voice in the cast, and his gently booming phonation connects well against Thomas Haden Church’s self-evident enjoyment in delivering his evil character’s droll lines. Wanda Sykes steals the show as an impertinent skunk named Stella when RJ disguises her as a slinky black cat to flirt with Gladys’ magisterial tomcat Tiger (Omid Djalili) so that she can filch the automatic cat door key from his collar. The bit is an obvious homage to the Looney Tunes skunk Pepe Le Peu, famous for his guileless efforts at romance in spite of his stinky inner nature. Over The Hedge is a kids’ movie made up of adult circuitry. The only human children in the story are a couple of realistic and therefore unsympathetic girl scouts selling cookies that have a narcotic effect on Hammy when he steals them. What really pushes the uncomfortable interaction between the cute woodland creatures and the narcissistic humans that have invaded their habitat is what critic David Thomson calls “a primitive feeling for endangered civilization.” The animals are barely able to co-exist with the artificial territory built up around them, and their future seems gloomy at best. For all of the animals’ efforts at storing up stolen unhealthy people-food for the next winter, it’s Hammy’s constant search for nuts that finally serves their purpose best. The metaphoric subtext is as clear as the apocalyptic destruction that befalls Gladys’ treasured suburban home. All of the humans have gone nuts. MTW

House is in the Hale A look at Chicago’s DJ Mark Grant Not everyone understands house music. So the old anthem goes. Nearly three decades after its post-disco implosion in Chi-town’s Warehouse club, the genre has lent itself to global ab-fab (read: absolutely fabulous) soirees, massive desert raves and, let’s face it, awful aerobic pop renditions.

Mark Grant Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s, 879-9001 From commercialism comes the need for quality control. For crying out loud, it’s not trance, nor is it techno; and if not spun by a Chicago great or someone with equal respect to its origin, then you might not have heard it properly at all. One of the few left who values the true-blue gritty Chicago sound is the legendary Mark Grant. With production credentials matching his seamless three-turntable mixing prowess, this modern-day maestro has blessed dance floors with his sexy, soulful sets for 20-something years now. Grant makes self-proclaimed music snobs happy to pay the cover, gives young-ins plenty of aural education and has enough cache with the white boy house-head ciphers to champion that sound for new generations to bump. “I just want to continue what I do, branch out and keep that feeling I had when I was 12,” he says. It was at this tender age, when his brother and his friends gave him a mixed tape, sparking an initial passion that eventually led to the production of 1990’s classics “Gotta New Love Thang,” “House Music Will Never Die,” “Dancin’” and a

slew of highly-coveted remixes under the Cajual label. This relationship resulted in the label’s 1997 mega-compilation, A Taste of Cajual, which put Grant above the international radar and in the same company of his early musical heroes. In 2001, he released Sound Design/v2 under San Francisco outfit Om Records, which found its way to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of top 15 records for that year. “It’s hard to say how I got hooked,” says Grant. “It was the chemistry of everything—the fact that my brother and his friends introduced me to it. I remember not being able to go out because I was too young. I would listen to the radio until late and was playing records at home. It was a Chicago-based sound and it was new.” The aforementioned radio show, an orientation of sorts, was Hot Mix 5 and featured house pioneers, Scott “Smokin” Silz, Ralphi “Rockin” Rosario, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Kenny “Jammin” Jason and Mickey “Mixin” Oliver. Grant took in the fusion of disco, electro, hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul and blues into a 4/4 beat like fish to water. Three snaps and a soul-clap later, he scored his first job at his very own grammar school for a whopping 15 bucks. Paying dues was not too bad though, especially when your dad is your personal roadie. “I have the best parents in the world,” says Grant. “They might’ve not exactly known what I was doing but from the very start, they supported me all the way through. I am so grateful because not everyone can say that.” Mom bought him his first set-up, spacing it out between his birthday and Christmas. Grant also recalls his father tirelessly helping him break down equipment at five in the morning, driv-

While bookings for Grant are worldwide, he can still be found once a month at house music haven Boom Boom Room located at Chi-town’s Green Dolphin club, where the genre’s most discerning audience could be found. With the recent upstart of his own record label, Blackstone Recordings, a couple house gems are slated for release

this year—“Shame” featuring hometown vocalist Swaylo in mid-June, and “Guessin’ Again,” with Chicago Idol’s Russoul by early August. Grant previously worked with Russoul on “There 4 Me,” currently his favorite club track. “It has different elements and textures in one song,” he says. “I like it funky, soulful and energetic and I feel like I hit it on the nose with this one. I get the thrill of creating as an artist and producer and then playing it as a DJ.” MTW

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) If you’re planning on cutting something out of your life—be it smoking or an unhealthy relationship or ice cream—forget doing it gradually. Trust me on this. Either you want the thing in your life or you don’t. If you can’t make the decision to eliminate it 100%, you won’t be able to cut it down 10%, so why bother trying? You’ll just piss people off for no reason. So, that’s the deal. It’s all or nothing on this one—no in-betweens. Which, my dear, would you prefer?

This week I encourage Geminis to embrace extremes when making edits from their lives. Cutting something or someone cleanly out is the only way. Similarly, I’d like to encourage you to be that full-on. Only instead of cutting something or someone out of the picture, I’d like you to add someone or something in, and in a way that’s totally risky and exciting. It’s not the only way, but it’s the way best suited to “success” (whatever that means for that particular situation). It’s also, fortunately, the path involving the most fun!

CLEAN, AFFORDABLE Accommodations in our vacation rental from $49 per day. Call Toll Free Wailuku Guesthouse 877-986-8270 or www.wailukuhouse.com

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Something Leos struggle with is that you are social creatures, yet you’re not always excellent team players. You like being surrounded by people, as long as you have some status. Being the low person on the totem pole just doesn’t suit you. Sometimes even equal status can gall you. Where am I going with this? I’m trying to encourage you to do what you’ve got to do to achieve some status in the social situations you’re in this week. It’s for the happiness and wellbeing of all concerned. Better a sweet, generous, benevolent tyrant than a surly serf.

Kaimana’s Beach Hale at Baby Beach www.kaimanasbeachhale.com Special this month. $125-$195 a day. Your own private Ohana. Continental breakfast served. Full kitchen with espresso machine & D/W. Call 667-6968 for info.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Believe it or not, the world is conspiring in some very subtle ways to curb you Virgos. All anyone has to do to prevent you from getting anywhere is to keep you busy with stuff that really doesn’t matter. As long as you’re actively getting something done, you’re usually pretty happy, even if your accomplishments don’t ultimately get you any closer to your real goals. I’ve seen Virgos waste years of their lives helping other people realize their dreams while doing virtually nothing to further their own. Be honest with yourself. Then make the changes that’ll ensure that at least 51% of your best time and energy is devoted to what you want and need and dream about.

This week I’m trying to teach Scorpios an impossible lesson: how to be optimists. That’s something I’ve never had to school you on, exactly. Where you fall short, sometimes, is by not setting your hopes and aspirations high enough. Sure, higher hopes means occasionally devastating disappointments instead of simply mild ones. But I’m sick of you being just simply more mediocre than you ought to be. You’re supposed to (and able to) shine! Start by making your dreams ambitious enough to truly be worthy of someone like you. People who’ve struggled through hard experiences usually come out the other side stronger and more resolved and determined than ever. That’s almost always the case with you Capricorns, but I have seen it happen that an unexpected defeat, failure, or mistake can throw you guys for a loop that takes months to come out of. Don’t let that happen next time around. This week, stretch—physically and spiritually. The goal is to start improving your elasticity and flexibility— the better to bounce back the next time life tosses you to the ground.

We offer “Maui’s Best” an amazing opportunity to work with our Mandarin Wok Exhibition Kitchen in a stylish, high energy, oceanfront setting.

Whenever I’m down and out, I like to see myself as a character in a movie or a novel, just as they’re struggling through the hardest part of the dramatic conflict. This hero figure may not win, but s/he’ll grow or learn something or occasionally triumph through persistence and unfailing hope. I choose to believe that simply having faith that things will turn around will eventually yield positive results. It may or may not be true or work exactly like that. I just don’t know. But I can tell you what I do know, without a shadow of a doubt: If you believe that things will get worse, they definitely will.

Librans love comfort and adore popularity. Unfortunately, this week may force you to choose between the two. I don’t envy you the kind of little choices you’ll have to face over the next chapter, constantly evaluating what you’ll sacrifice and what you’ll get for whatever you give up. It’s a tricky situation for anyone, but eventually it boils down to this: Do you want your life to be easy and comfortable, if a bit lonely? Or would you rather suffer and strive, just to be surrounded by people who respect you (but may or may not actually like you)?

3-5

Located at Lahaina Center, just behind the Wallace Front Street Theatres 9000 Frontt Street,, Lahaina,, HII 96761

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) What do you expect? Beat up your body and you’ll get sick. Stomp on a relationship and it’ll fall apart. Do a half-ass job and you’ll lose your job. You understand and believe in these concepts, right? So why do you sometimes have a hard time believing in their opposites? Eat well and sleep enough and you’ll be healthy. Nurture your relationship with respect and affection and it’ll be solid and dependable. Rock out at work and you’ll be rewarded. While not all of these things (positive or negative) are true all the time, most of them are true most of the time.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes you want to be wrapped up safe, as snug as a babe in Mama’s arms. Other times that very same treatment would have you feeling terrified and claustrophobic and ultimately running for the hills. Sometimes it feels as if there’s no pleasing you—even when you’re the one trying! This week may be one of those frustrating weeks where you don’t quite know what you want, or how to make yourself happy. Don’t freak out. Instead of trying to figure out what’ll work (a hopeless task, at the moment), concentrate on the present moment, whatever it is, and simply doing your best to enjoy that.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re a natural leader—until you burn out. You take on too much (or fail to refuse too many burdens), and you collapse under the pressure. What’s important is that you get back up and don’t become a shrinking violet as a result of your negative experience. The next time around, you learn from your mistakes: don’t put yourself in a position to bark out orders when you’re prone to laryngitis, for example. Bottom line is: first accept that you have limitations. Then gracefully accept those limitations. Then, and only then, try to—carefully and wisely—transcend them.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I’ve never met an especially gullible Taurus. It’s not that you’re overly suspicious, either. You just take your time deciding whether someone’s worthy of your trust. It’s that patience that will benefit you this week, as nothing will be especially clear, either way. I urge you not to reach any conclusions yet, although you ought to feel free to develop your ideas about the situation. Your chain may indeed be getting yanked. But this could also be for real. Only time will tell, and only if you give it time. Jump to conclusions now and you may soon regret them. CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

DJ CONTEST

Number of Mind Erasers I had with Sonja on Sunday night, after we clearly stated to each other that we only wanted to go out for one, maybe two cocktails. But as it happened, we both got caught up in the moment—actually, several moments, including that one time a Jurassic-sized cockroach that flew into my cleavage—warranting a quick erasing of memory with said cocktail. And then another of same cocktail to erase the feeling of tiny roach legs scampering across my tender bosomy flesh.

920

Number of minutes I spent watching 23 CSI episodes in three days. You see for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to rent the first season on Netflix but then I started house-sitting for some friends who happen to have a big-screen projector in their living room and I kinda thought it would be a shame to waste it on a television series so the logical thing to do would be to drink a lot of coffee I mean a LOT of coffee and spend the whole weekend powering through all those crime scenes and dead bodies and maggots and ha ha it really wasn’t so bad and hey what’s that noise?

148

Number of student loan payments I have left before it’s finally paid off. Yeah, that’s 21 years of paying for a science degree I’m not currently using. But hey, talking about the sex lives of cephalopods is big at the bars so I guess it’s all worth it.

17

Number of purple garments I spotted people wearing at the Ali’i Lavender Kula Farm on Sunday. And I’m talking about people who weren’t actually employed by the lavender farm. You know, I went up initially thinking it would be a sufficiently calm and peaceful getaway for me to do some much-neglected personal writing. But the purple-people were loudly ebullient in their praise for how calm and peaceful upcountry (seemingly) is.

4

Number of years I studied Spanish in grade school. Also the number of prefabricated Spanish sentences I can actually speak now, with some difficulty. My mother tells me I was fluent when I was quite young. I was even the lead in our fifth grade Spanish play of “Little Red Riding Hood.” And yet, somehow having to utilize my education in the real world scared that fluency right outta me. And now I could more easily recite the words to “All I Need” by Jack Wagner than any pertinent vocabulary words in Spanish.

We’re weird. We actually LOVE doing taxes.

Number of Google hits I got for the words “Samantha Campos, Brussels sprouts.” Amongst the convoluted info I discovered about “bold broccoli, lanky lettuce and courageous cauliflower” was this obscurely pertinent sentence on a UK TV Guide: “For Boxing Day, Gary suggests original ways to use up the remains of the Christmas pudding and Brussels sprouts…”

In no time at all, you’ll have beautifully prepared returns, with every possible deduction and credit. The IRS will be happy, you'll be happy, and you may even discover something for yourself.

Number of minutes I spent driving around Central Maui looking for an open taqueria at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Doesn’t this seem odd to you? I mean, the very nature of taquerias states that they must serve heaping plates of mammoth burritos, steaming Spanish rice and stale tortilla chips into the wee hours of the morn— or at the very least, 9 frickin’ p.m. Right?

Okay. Not many people can say this, but we at the DK Levin Company actually ENJOY doing tax returns. The forms. The worksheets. All that complex math and figures. It may not make sense, but it’s true. We’d like NOTHING better than to sit down with you and go over your W-2’s and 1099’s and other tax information. Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff. email: Web:

Approximate number of miles on my Jeep before it blew up in flames. It also seems to be how many days it’ll take for me to collect my insurance money and get a new ride. Not that I’m anxious or impatient or anything, or that I don’t simply love staring at the heartbreaking heap of molten metal in my driveway every morning I leave for work. No, really, I’m fine—thanks for asking.

Number of minutes before I finally broke down and went to Taco Bell.

Samantha Campos once aspired to be a high school calculus teacher but has now pushed that notion aside for loftier ambitions—like teaching Functional Analysis or “Fun Anal,” as the kids call it. MTW
