What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 25, 2006 press release on her signing six identity theft bills: “These bills offer new ways to protect consumers from the fastest growing crime across the nation. My administration is proud to announce that Hawai’i will now have some of the most comprehensive laws in place to protect consumers from identity theft.”

What she didn’t say: Though one of the protections Lingle signed—allowing identity theft victims to place a “security freeze” on your credit report—is a good step (all consumers should have this option), the “fastest growing crime” line seems to be pure hype. The release sources such a claim to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), but recent press reports in the Associated Press, Money magazine and Slate.com indicate the FTC data may be overblown, with actual cases of someone of one person using another’s name to get credit still quite rare. “But while it’s certainly important to be vigilant against this potentially devastating crime, it also appears identity theft is too broadly defined and often misunderstood,” wrote the AP’s Brian Bergstein on Nov. 13, 2005. -Anthony Pignataro

‘Like a Prison, Really’

Killing civilians in Iraq is old news

Months after Time magazine reported that U.S. Marines had allegedly carried out a My Lai-style massacre of at least two dozen innocent Iraqi civilians, the average “support our troops” American is waking up and smelling the butchery. As usual, the U.S. government tried to cover up the mass murder—it initially claimed that the victims were blown up by an insurgent IED. But, as Time reported in March, the “civilians who died in Haditha on Nov. 19 were killed not by a roadside bomb but by the Marines themselves, who went on a rampage in the village after the attack, killing 15 unarmed Iraqis in their homes, including seven women and three children.” As at My Lai, the bloodlust was not easily sated. “The raids took five hours and left at least 23 people dead.” Jane and Joe Sixpack are shocked. Congressional Democrats are calling for an investigation and, for once, will probably get one. Political analysts worry that the Haditha massacre could hurt U.S. propaganda efforts even more than the infamous photos of torture at its Abu Ghraib concentration camp. So far reaction to Haditha has been the reverse of what you might expect. Republicans and other pro-war types are running around like it’s the end of the world. Meanwhile the streets of Arab capitals, recently ablaze over the Danish Mohammed cartoon controversy, are quiet. The reason is simple: For Iraqis, American atrocities are old news, dating back to the invasion in March 2003 and a full decade earlier. “As the war in Iraq rages on,” CBS News’ Dotty Lynch asks, “Where are the young people this time around? Where are the campuses? Where are the new Tom Haydens and Sam Browns and where are the Noam Chomskys, William Sloane Coffins and Daniel Berrigans?” Well, Chomsky’s still around. Over a million young Americans, many of them college students, protested Iraq. They certainly had allies in the media. But The System is even less responsive to protest now than it was during Vietnam. State-run media made fun of antiwar activists as tattooed neo-hippies, called them treasonous and refused airtime to Administration critics. When is the last time a hard-hitting opponent of the Iraq war showed his or her face on national TV? Those of us who raised our voices against this war from the start, having fruitlessly complained about stories of battlefield abuse reported by the European media, are suffering from marginalization fatigue. Meanwhile, in the “new” Iraq, Abdel Salam al-Qubaisy of Iraq’s Sunni Muslim Scholars Association says, U.S. massacres of civilians occur routinely. “The American soldier has become an expert in killing,” he shrugs. Like many Iraqis, Baghdad shopkeeper Mohammed Jawdaat says that U.S. troops have never shown respect for the lives of Iraqi civilians. “Six months ago,” remembers Jawdaat, “a car pulled out of a street towards an American convoy and a soldier just opened fire. The driver was shot in the head. There were no warning shots and the Americans didn’t even stop.” Abd Mohammed Falah, a Ramadi attorney, says: “U.S. forces have committed more crimes against the Iraqi people than appears in the media. The U.S. defense secretary and his generals should be sent to court instead of two or three soldiers who will be scapegoats.” Rami Khouri, editor at The Daily Star in Lebanon tells NPR that Haditha is “not a huge story [in the Middle East]. It’s getting a lot of coverage in the United States, obviously, but most people in the Arab world are against what the United States did in Iraq… They say look, this was a catastrophe from the beginning and they’re not surprised that this is happening.

LC Watch It was nearly 7 p.m., closing time. Sidney Inokuma had been working in his little Hali’imaile liquor store all day. His sister sometimes worked the register during the day, but he’d opened this morning, 12 hours ago. Anyway, it was near closing when a guy walked in and started milling about. Then a few minutes later a young woman entered and went to the beer cooler. After selecting a six-pack of Heineken, she went to the register. Inokuma was tired and wanted to get home. He was also careless. Though he was standing in front of a 25-year-old sign warning him not to sell alcohol to minors, he rang up the sale without asking the girl for her ID. She handed over a $20 bill. Inokuma made change. As the girl walked out, the first guy walked over to Inokuma and identified himself as a Maui County Liquor Control Officer. Then he said Inokuma had just sold alcohol to a minor. It’s doubtful the whole incident took more than three minutes. That was last July 29. On June 1 of this year, Inokuma spent considerably more time before the LC’s Board of Adjudication.

They kind of take it in stride because everything the United States is doing in Iraq is seen as morally and politically unacceptable.” The morality-come-latelies still don’t understand that nothing good will ever come out of the U.S. war against Iraq. Marine General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says that massacres of civilians by U.S. soldiers do “not happen very frequently, so there’s no way to say historically why something like this might have happened.” Actually, similar incidents have taken place in every war, including World War II. Pace’s statement is either a dazzling display of historical ignorance or a bald-faced lie—take your pick. Pace adds that if some of his men committed an atrocity at Haditha, they “have not performed their duty the way that 99.9 percent of their fellow Marines have.” That’s not what the Iraqis say. MTW

Dressed in jeans, a white t-shirt and a baseball cap that he respectfully removed when he walked into the hearing room, he pled no contest to the single count against him. It was the first time this had happened to him. “I was trying to close out,” he said. “I work seven days a week. It’s like a prison, really.” That last line got a healthy chuckle from the board. While Inokuma was pacing outside during the board’s deliberation, LC Director Franklyn Silva went up to him and said he tossed out one count against him because no one from the department had offered him a plea agreement. Inokuma nodded but said nothing. The board’s verdict, reached after just five minutes, was typical: a $2,000 fine, half of which was suspended if Inokuma doesn’t sell to another minor for a year. Inokuma thanked the board, then walked out and went back to work.

Recent bad news has dropped Maui Land and Hawaiian Telcom a notch each. On the former, The Maui News has been kicking the ass of the proposed Hawai’i Superferry—partially funded by MLP—by running a series of stories on how the boats will squeeze poor Young Brother Shipping and bring chaos to the Kahului Harbor. And Carlyle Group’s Hawaiian Telcom just posted a first quarter loss of $38.6 million, compared to just a $15.7 million loss last year. But such drops are nothing compared to

Dowling Co. plummeting three slots on news that some University of Hawaii regents are questioning the ethics of a deal between the school and Dowling’s subsidiary Kulamalu Science for some new astronomy projects. Dowling, who is a UH regent, apparently got a thumbs-up from the state Ethics Commission, but that didn’t stop his fellow regents from asking for other developers to start bidding on the project. MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, May 31 Been wondering lately whatever happened to Chris Halford (R, 11th District). He’s the guy who’s been silently representing South Maui in the state Legislature for the last 12 years. Anyway, he’s not yet pulled papers to run for reelection, and we’re getting near the deadline. No one else has announced for that seat, probably since the Democratic Party bungled the job so badly back in 2004. That’s when Halford’s challenger was former Maui Weekly writer Cort Gallup, who shouldn’t have even been on the ballot because he was a Canadian citizen. Anyway, it’s hard to decide which candidate slipped into greater obscurity after the race. With mostly mediocre marks from the Sierra Club, gun lobby, Chamber of Commerce and labor groups, Halford has spent more than a decade doing not much of anything in the state House of Representatives. After all, he’s a Republican—there’s not much those guys can do in Honolulu unless your name is Linda Lingle. And for the most part, this was fine with Halford. This is remarkably similar to something Halford said last year. “The opportunity for a minority member is to be a constructive critic when the Legislature is misguided,” Halford told the paper in April 2005. “I see that as my job.” Considering that the Democrats still look to control the state House and Senate this time around, I guess Halford’s job is secure.

New York City and Washington, D.C. are crying the loudest, but even the great State of Hawai’i is being hit, with our share of the HS pork dropping from $22 million to a paltry $13 million. Did I mention this is an election year? Yeah. Anyway, just about everyone in Congress—including a lot of Republicans—are pissed, and not simply because this is an election year. Seems some of them feel it’s utter insanity for a U.S. President to create a monster federal bureaucracy dedicated to national defense, then start to defund that bureaucracy because of what can only be described as poor management. Heck of a job, Bushie.

FRIDAY, June 2 Good news for anyone who feels it’s important to restore water flow in West Maui streams. Which is everyone, right? Well, everyone except Wailuku Water, which used to be part of Wailuku Agribusiness, which used to divert all that water to its sugarcane fields. Anyhoo, that’s all done now, according to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. See, Mayor Alan Arakawa—who’s currently running for reelection against a bunch of people—just signed a $476.8 million budget that includes a $7 million payment to Wailuku Water for West Maui stream water rights. Sure, some of that water will go for the

Guess he wasn’t being dramatic after all—today he announced that his days of representing South Maui anymore in the state House are over. And wow, this sounds familiar: “It has been constructive for Maui to have a person in the minority,” Halford’s quoted as saying in The Maui News announcement of his decision not to run again. Constructive? By not being able to get bills or amendments passed? By not having the opportunity to chair committees? By having to sit at the card table with the other kiddie Republicans every time the grown-up Democrats want to throw a party? What’s constructive about all that?

Hey, speaking of tired politicians withering away in the minority, I got a newsletter from U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) today! And it’s full color, too—he’s really getting his money’s worth from that “Prepared, Published and Mailed at Taxpayers Expense” line at the bottom of the flyer. Anyway, it’s jammed with reasons why we should reelect Akaka this year. The first and most prominent, of course, is that only Danny Akaka dares say that President Bush “Must Articulate Clear Plan for Iraq Withdrawal.” Akaka bravely feels that Bush’s insistence that future administrations will have to extricate this great nation from Iraq is “completely unacceptable.” See, Akaka wants a plan for withdrawal now—not three years from now. Right now. A plan. Not an actual withdrawal—that would be crazy. And by “be crazy,” I mean “make too much sense.” Heck of a job, Danny.

Ship Happens My last day working on a cruise ship The alarm kept beeping. It was another morning, like every other morning. A good night’s sleep has always been a prized commodity, but on the ship it was merely a dream. “Jamie, get up,” I said. “One more write up and you’re fired. Get up, go to work, and let Ashley and I go back to sleep.” She gave an unintelligible grunt in return. Ashley would lose it if that alarm went off again. Then I’d get to start my day with a screaming match. Maybe if Jamie wasn’t up all night frolicking about she might find it easier to wake up in the wee hours. I stared at the ceiling less than two feet from my nose and sighed. This was my fourth week aboard the cruise ship that circled the Hawaiian waters like a fat, lazy shark. I had entered this vocation with the lofty ideal of living aboard a floating city, working as a bartender as part of a crew exemplifying responsibility and dedication—a utopia of rules, regulations and professional decorum set beneath a tropical sun. Things weren’t going as planned. I threw back the curtain and jumped from my bunk, landing in the narrow walkway. Jamie was still snoring. Fifteen minutes later I was out the door to collect the bar waiters allotted to assist me with morning stores, the ship’s term for stocking the bar with required inventory. I trudged down the long hallway that snaked through the crew cabins, giving the most cheerful good mornings I could muster to any who caught my zombie-like gaze. Most did not return my greeting. I passed the garbage sorting room, its sickly-sweet smell saturating my senses with nausea. Up the stairs and through the crew mess, I found that they’d stopped serving breakfast. What a surprise. “This is not the Love Boat,” the job recruiter had told me in the fluorescent-lit room an eternity ago. “This is a job. It’s hard work, long hours. Don’t go into this believing you’re boarding a pleasure cruise, I cannot stress that enough. Living and working on a ship are some of the most difficult things to acclimate yourself to. But it’s not all bad; there are also plenty of rewards for your efforts.” Rewards like a 60 percent off discount for friends and family beginning at date of hire; free shore excursions that normally cost passengers anywhere from $40 to $200 per per-

son; plenty of time to go ashore and explore uncharted territory. Nothing I had been told was true. Well, except for the part about the hard work. The friends and family discount didn’t go into effect until after your second fivemonth contract. Shore excursions were offered but they certainly weren’t free, just discounted slightly. And they were only available if there was an open space. And having a block of time long enough to attempt the experience was a myth in itself. At least it was for me and those I called friends onboard, though I always saw crew going ashore with beach towels in hand and wondered how they wrangled the time off. No one was at the food and beverage office when I got there. After a few minutes two of my five groggily sauntered by. “Hey, uh, where you guys going?” I asked. “To smoke,” one said. “We’ll be back in a second.” “Um, no,” I said. “We only have an hour and a half to get the entire inventory and bring it up to the bar before drill. We need to get started. Anyone know where my other three are?” Dumb stares. “Alright, let’s go and see if they’re waiting downstairs,” I finally said. Walking through the ship, a wry smiled passed over my lips as I recalled the assistant bar manager’s reprimand to me the night before. “This isn’t the military,” he said. “You need to try to treat people with more respect. They’re people, just like you and me.” My ears had burned in humiliation. Had he known how much I let those lazy cretins get away with in a given day, his rebuke would have come from quite the opposite direction. We reached the storeroom and discovered one more waiter lounging outside. “Alright, now we’ve got three out of five,” I said. “My other two?” They shrugged their shoulders. Okay, so I asked about our cart. Someone said it had been stolen. Wonderful. Eventually I was able to borrow a cart, and we went off to Deck 13 to get to work. We had only 15 minutes until a regularly scheduled lifeboat drill to get it all put away and get the cart returned. Interestingly enough, there we found my missing two waiters, lounging on deck and chatting idly with my bar partner. “Hi guys,” I said, unsuccessfully hiding my irritation. “In case you didn’t notice all those bottles and kegs, we had stores this morning. Did you forget?” “Oh, our alarm didn’t go off,” one of the

waiters said. “We’re roommates, you know, so neither one of us got up.” How ironic. But before I could utter the sarcastic comment, the sharp whistle blasts for the lifeboat drill began, commanding us to rush to our pre-assigned stations. One of the first to arrive at my station, I began passing out life jackets. That was pretty much all I did, save for lining up and waiting for my safety number to be called. Supposedly missing a drill was grounds for termination, but I knew many crewmembers that had missed a drill yet still remained onboard. For an hour I stood, fidgeting in that cumbersome life jacket as roll was called over and over. After that we waited while fire and lifeboat teams practiced their routines. As I waited, I started to think. Many crewmembers were paranoid, thinking officers were out to get them. I didn’t think that way about my treatment, but I had ample reason to be suspicious. One morning I had awoken with a sore throat. During my off time I skipped breakfast to visit the ship’s doctor. Skipping a meal instead of visiting during working hours was a big sacrifice on my part but I wanted my supervisors to know I truly was ill, not just trying to blow off a shift. The doctor prescribed me antibiotics and said to take them with food four times a day. That was preposterous—how was I to get in four meals a day? Not his problem, he said. So I talked to the head bartender, but it wasn’t his problem, either. Never mind that I had accrued this ailment as a direct result of being forced, by his order, to wipe down tables in the rain. I had no choice, so I ended up leaving my station without permission to hurry down to the mess to eat so I could take my medication. Alas, the mess had already

closed and would not reopen until dinner, which I was scheduled to work through. In any case, the next day I got a write-up. I didn’t dispute it. Finally the dismissal bell sounded, signaling the end of the lifeboat drill. If I hurried to put my safety card away I might be able to grab lunch before work. So I rushed to my cabin, where I found Jamie yelling, accusing either Ashley or myself of unplugging her alarm clock in an attempt to get her fired. “Jamie, no one’s sabotaging you but you,” I said. “I’m over arguing with you about every little thing and your smelly, moldy feet. Once again, we’re almost out of bleach for the shower to keep your infectious fungus from spreading. Your alarm clock woke me up at least five times this morning. You were just snoring too loud to hear it, get over it.” I stomped out, close to tears. I couldn’t stomach the idea of going into work for a full nine hours without a break. Heading to the lunch line, I tried to compose myself with my boyfriend Jesse. He had just returned from emergency leave to go to his grandmother’s funeral—the ship had rejected my request to join him. “What’s wrong, baby?” he asked “Oh, remember how I always said I feared the day when we both felt like being irresponsible at the same time?” I said. “Yeah.” “Well, I think today’s the day. Want to leave?” “You mean, the ship?” “Yeah.” There was a brief moment of silence while I looked at his face and prayed for discernment. Then he smiled. “Yeah, I do.” He said. “Let’s go.” MTW

JUSTICE DENIED

Wheelchair-confined Richard Paey committed almost exactly the same violations of Florida prescription drug laws that radio personality Rush Limbaugh did, with a different result: Limbaugh’s sentence, in May, was addiction treatment, and Paey’s, in 2004, was 25 years in prison. Both illegally possessed large quantities of painkillers for personal use, which Paey defiantly argued was (and will be) necessary to relieve nearly constant pain from unsuccessful spinal surgeries after an auto accident, but which Limbaugh admitted was simply the result of addiction. In fact, if Limbaugh complies with his plea bargain, his conviction will be erased. Paey’s sentence now rests with a state Court of Appeal.

An Illinois Appellate Court in April upheld a lower court ruling reversing Mongo the steer’s disqualification for steroids after he had been chosen junior grand champion at the 2003 Illinois State Fair. Mongo had tested positive for the anti-inflammatory Banamine, for his sore foot, but the court declared the test improperly administered. It was a victory for Mongo’s owner, Whitney Gray, but of utterly no benefit to Mongo, who shortly after the fair was slaughtered for steak.

THE CONTINUING CRISIS China, sensitive about the impression it will make on visitors to the 2008 Olympics, has undertaken a major campaign against open spitting, monitored by volunteer scolders who wear shirts that spell out “mucus” in Chinese and who hand out bags to spit in. And India’s Rural Development Minister vowed in March that the country will eliminate open defecation by 2012, despite reports of toilet use in some states as low as 15 percent. The government gives homeowners toiletinstallation grants.

THE PERVO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY New York City raw-food restaurateur Dan Hoyt, 43, was sentenced to two years’ probation in April for a highly publicized 2005 incident in which he indecently exposed himself on a subway train in front of a 22-year-old woman, who reacted by photographing him with her cell phone and displaying the shot on the Internet. In an April interview with New York magazine, Hoyt shrugged off the incident, calling his habit just another facet of a “pretty cool,” thrill-seeking person. “I’ve met women who enjoy [being flashed].” Except for the subway incident, even his victim would “probably want to go out with me.”

SHORT ATTENTION SPANS Brian M. Williams, 21, was arrested for allegedly robbing Houchens Market in Glasgow, Ky., in April; police had found him minutes afterward across the street filling his gas tank. And Nathan Myles, 25, was sentenced in March to three years in prison for a lengthy, destructive police chase in Thunder Bay, Ontario; it ended when Myles stopped for a haircut. And Mario Caracoza, 26, was arrested for allegedly robbing a Bank of America in Bristol Township, Pa., in May; police had found him minutes afterward eating breakfast at the Sunrise Diner next door. “You wanna try the multi-culti chicken?” the waitress suggests. “He likes lemon chicken,” says Willie. “We’ll have the chicken chow fun, with the gravy…” Willie turns to Eric. “You wanted the egg foo young with gravy,” he says. “You want shrimp or vegetable? You want kau youk? “No,” says Eric. Willie continues ordering. “One rice… and hot tea.” “Five this is, yeah?” says the waitress. “Lemme repeat your order—“ She goes down the list. “And one cake noodle,” adds Willie. Willie tells Eric how he was videotaping his daughter’s hula dancing at school, on the same day they were giving out various school awards. Senator Roz Baker even made an appearance. “Yeah, there’s the Presidential Fitness award,” says Willie, “and awards to kids who’ve never been absent—there were a lot of ‘em!” “Did you perform?” asks Eric.. “Nah,” says Willie. “But do you remember elementary school sound systems? Well, they had it rigged—all you have to do is plug in the CD and go—and they still had technical problems! My daughter had the classic look like, ‘Don’t make me stand here all day.’ They did ‘Ulupalakua’—you know that song?” Eric starts singing it. “My daughter is such the thespian,” says Willie, laughing. “She’s your protégé.” The waitress sets down a plate of food. “Your father still eat here?” asks Willie. “Oh yeah. You know, we still haven’t had the old lady come around and say, right in my ear, ‘Where your father?’ She make you feel guilty you only order 10 things. ‘What? You no eat?!’” “I heard they retired two years ago,” says Willie. Another plate appears.

But before the heyday actually starts, I joined them for lunch. Sunday, 4 p.m. The two men are sitting at a large round table looking at Lahaina Civic Amphitheater over menus. A waitress comes to take their order. The men briefly discuss the options but have a hard time deciding $30/$35. between their usual favorites.

“So what—are we heading back to Germany?” asks Eric. “In September,” says Willie. They talk of potential future dealings with the music producer who commissioned their last European trip for a private party. “That would put us in the company of Madonna,” says Eric, “Billy Joel…” “Eric Clapton,” says Willie. “Yep, all that.” Eric suddenly gets out of his chair to inspect the next table’s bowls of rice soup. “If they want us in September,” says Willie. “What do we got in September? We should figure that out now. I think we should do New York City, D.C., Augusta, Georgia…” “What’s in Augusta?” asks Eric. “A lot of Hawaiians,” says Willie. “Oh, that’s where they went,” says Eric. “Yeah, and then we fly from the East Coast to Germany,” says Willie. “And then it’s only five hours.” “You know, we should set up the entire tour around golfing,” says Eric. “And food.” “Yeah, that’s a good idea,” says Willie. The waitress drops the rest of the food. Willie claps happily, Eric oohs and ahhs. Then the men are quiet for a few moments as they load up their plates. “So I’m thinking you gotta do ‘Oh Tahiti,’” says Willie, between bites. “That song is really hot.” “Yes, master,” says Eric, chewing. “Then let’s do an arrangement.” “You don’t wanna do the album version?” asks Willie. The last plate of food arrives. Willie deems it the “Holy Grail of Chow Fun.” The lazy Susan is now housing Honey Walnut Shrimp, a huge mountain of rice, another plate of steaming shrimp and vegetables and another yet of something green. “We’re trying to get into Iraq,” says Willie. “We got friends trying to get us to go. But I don’t think you’d call ‘em friends for wanting us to go—and get shot.” The men laugh. “So we get this Barefoot Bash thing,” says Willie. “What else do you think would be a good idea? What else do you want to be connected with it?” “I think you should do a Barefoot Natives Golf Tournament,” says Eric. “And everybody has to be barefoot.” “Mmm hmm…” says Willie. “What’s the insurance coverage for people who get stung by bees?” More silence as the men eat. “But this Barefoot Tournament,” says Willie. “We should raise funds for… what?” “Well,” says Eric. “Something cultural…” “A lot of private companies over here want to sponsor,” says Willie. “You know, to raise money for the cause. I wanna do something for abused children.” “There’s the homeless thing,” offers Eric. “You can’t do the homeless thing here,” says Willie. “You got all that ocean and you can’t do something with it? You got opihi, you can make one fishing pole—you got the biggest shopping mall out there floating in the ocean! Don’t talk to me about homeless here.” Willie is quiet for moment. “I was homeless in San Francisco myself,” he says. “I was homeless once,” says Eric. “For a week…” “No, I mean I was in the streets— homeless,” says Willie. “But I pulled through.” “Well, I guess I’ve never been

Granted, you got the Hawaiian immersion program. But when you walk around, you don’t hear Hawaiian spoken. But in Italy, you do. Hot Meals on Wheels Nobu Yoshida’s magnificent truck When the name Nobu pops up in the context of food, a more culinary-inclined bunch might think of a renowned restaurateur titan whose namesake Japanese-fusion eateries span Tokyo, California, New York, London and Milan. But on the Westside, the Nobu that reigns supreme has been in the ranks for as long as his acclaimed counterpart. Try 14 years. And business is solid as ever.

The truck operates Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until da grinds run out. The truck is usually located in the industrial section of Lahaina near the intersection of Hinau St. and Honoapi’ilani Hwy, not far from the vibrant mural that says, “Family Fun in the Sun on Maui.” Nobu Yoshida, 44, came to Hawai’i from Yokosuka, Japan, to work with Olympic wrestler turned heavyweight entrepreneur Rocky Aoki for the grand opening of Benihana in Honolulu. As the popular franchise expanded to Maui, he and his wife Masako moved as well. When the restaurant closed its doors nine years later, he was faced with the choice to pack up to Honolulu or Japan. “I decided to stay and open up my own business,” he says. With little overhead, he opened a lunch truck in Lahaina that would serve one of the first industrial areas of the island for over a decade to come. The trim menu consists of six staple favorites, including shoyu chicken, beef stew, chicken curry and meatballs; there’s also a special item that changes daily.

Nobu and his truck Having sampled most of the menu without disappointments, I chanced the roast pork special on my last visit. Cooked to tender perfection, the pork is delightfully topped with a sweet mabo dofu glaze. Noodles accompany each order and are made with thin spaghetti pasta done lightly in soy sauce and garlic. Though lacking sauce, the noodles are pleasantly far from dry and pair very well with all the entrees. With a side of macaroni or fresh green salad tossed with a tangy ginger-onion dressing, a plate lunch costs about $7. But in true aloha fashion, Yoshida has been known to let a few regulars pay in kine—local musicians Keola Beamer and George Kahumoku in exchange for gui-

tar lessons, for instance, or a broke surfer or two in exchange for a good wave. Yoshida has been an avid surfer since the age of 16. The pink truck—its color credited to his wife’s adventurous aesthetics—serves more than a 100 hungry heads a day, around 30 of which turn up regularly. “I have been going there for five years, maybe longer,” says Desmond Alexander, 23, a regular who stops by twice a week and works at one of the island’s highly noted five-star restaurants. “I like that the food is consistent. My favorite is the hamburger steak but instead of the salad, I get an extra scoop of noodles.” MTW

[ANTI WAR TALKS] At last count, 2,475 American soldiers have died in the Iraqi war, and another 296 were killed in Afghanistan. Joshua Dawson is one of those who survived, having served in Iraq from January 2004 to Januay 2005. Dawson saw combat at Tuz Kurmatzu, Tal Afar, An Najaf, Kirkuk, Samara and Mosul. After being honorably discharged, Dawson decided that he could best support his fellow soldiers by helping organize the Hawai’i chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Now Dawson travels around and tells people what it’s like to fight in Iraq, and why we need to end the war as soon as possible. The MCC lecture is free, but the Maui Beach Hotel breakfast—which includes appearances from other veterans, including Vietnam Veterans of Maui President Bill Stroud—costs $15 per person. [CLASSICAL MUSIC] When asked to preview Paul Jacobs’ organ recital at the Makawao Union Church, I immediately thought of all sorts of clever double entendres featuring the word “organ.” I decided not to use any of them. Then, I tried to call upon my knowledge of the organ, but could only remember hearing it at ball games. Finally, I attempted to relate to the life of a 29-year-old organist, but I can’t say that I had much luck with that, either. But what I will say is this—Paul Jacobs is incredible. In addition to being one of the world’s finest concert organists, he is the chairman of the organ department at the prestigious Julliard School in New York. The list of his accolades is staggering. Among his most notable achievements was his 18-consecutive-hour performance of the complete organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Perhaps most impressive is his undeniable enthusiasm for music and performing, and the effect his exuberance has had on the sometimes too-conservative world of organ music. In Makawao, Jacobs will be performing a program of works by Bach, Brahms, Handel, Vierne, Ives, and John Weaver. As Jacobs has said, “Real music, beautiful music—you can listen to it without understanding it, you do not need to have studied rhythm or harmony. You must feel it.” We are lucky to have him, and should seize the opportunity to feel his magnificent music resonate off the walls of the Makawao Union Church (1445 Baldwin Ave.). [COREY NIELSEN]

[ENVIRONMENTAL LECTURE] Noted environmental activist David Helvarg’s new book 50 Ways to Save the Ocean—published by Makawao’s own Inner Ocean Publishing—is a comprehensive but still easily readable guide to all the horrible things we human beings do every day to 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. In fact, it’s so good we excerpted a small portion of it for our June 1, 2006 cover story “5 Ways to Save the Ocean.” Anyway, Helvarg will stop by the Maui Ocean Center this Tuesday to sign copies of his book (1-3 p.m.) and talk about how to make more ocean-respecting choices in our daily lives (6 p.m.). Can a movie change your DNA? When I recently read The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, written by Dan Millman in 1980, I think my eyes actually stuttered. The Way of the Peaceful Warrior is the semi-autobiographical story of main character Dan’s metaphysical journey toward self-enlightenment. The novel introduces Dan as a talented and egotistical gymnast at UC Berkley. Then, by a not-so-coincidental turn of fate, Dan meets an enigmatic auto mechanic late one night. Dan nicknames the always-curious mechanic Socrates. Socrates lives simply yet deliberately; he calls himself a “peaceful warrior” and offers to lend Dan a hand in exploring a more meaningful approach to life. The story unfolds as Socrates mentors Dan in his discovery of what a peaceful warrior is and how such a warrior lives. The novel weaves love, pain, passion and heartbreak together to fabricate a story that is real and vibrant. Millman’s words are poetic yet plain while Socrates’ maxims are more poignant and riddled. The novel clev-

erly applies modern techniques of magical realism in a present-day setting to the ageold themes of clarity and enlightenment. Millman challenges the reader to control his or her mind, to pay attention and to find the extraordinary in every seemingly ordinary moment. Since the novel’s publishing, Millman has enjoyed a cult-like following of hippies and mainstreamers who find truth in his words. The novel has been translated into 29 languages and has even inspired “enlightened warrior” summer camps where campers learn, among other things, the “simple secrets to peace and happiness in everyday life.” Salva is an interesting choice for a director. Known for the thrillers Jeepers Creepers, Powder and Jeepers Creepers II, he’s also found the time to plead guilty to five counts of child molestation. But Salva’s flair for drama and details should highlight the more subtle points of the story. Early reviews point to strong performances by the cast as a major strength in the film’s execution. Scott Mechlowicz plays Dan and Nick Nolte plays Socrates; Amy Smart also stars and Millman himself makes a cameo. Both promotions and reviews point to its closely following the plot and tone of the original story. “When you hear the truth, it sounds familiar,” said actor Jim Carrey after he saw the movie. “Like seeing a reflection of something you already possess. This film is that clear and simple reflection. I enjoyed every moment.” If the movie truly does justice to the book, it should be more than just an entertaining manifesto. It should express personal discovery and empowerment. According to Straw Weisman, associate producer of What the Bleep Do We Know?, the film has indeed captured this sentiment. “It’s like Rocky for the soul,” he said.

Reggae’s Adventurous Traveler Talking with Ky-Mani Marley I recently had the opportunity to speak with reggae musician Ky-Mani (pronounced key-mani) Marley—yes, one of Bob’s sons—by phone. At home in Miami, surrounded by his family and friends, he sounded loose and relaxed. As children audibly played in the background, Marley spoke of music, travel, brotherhood, some of the downfalls of being the son of a musical and political savior, and his firm belief that he could whoop me in table tennis.

It’s like you’re trapped in a hot air balloon whose controls are broken. All you can do is ride the wind and watch the world passing by below, and wait for the balloon to lose buoyancy and eventually lower you. You’re not used to being so passive, but it’s good (occasional) practice for you to just let things play out as they will, instead of interfering. You don’t always need to be the leader, the one with all the great ideas. This time around, for the next little bit, you can just allow life to happen on its own.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Discipline has never been your problem. I know Capricorns who can stick to—for months or years— diets or work schedules that’d break a Leo or a Pisces in under 24 hours. It’s overcoming your natural caution and making the kinds of wild and irrational choices that come so easily to, for example, those two signs. That’s where you run into difficulty. The Cenozoic Era: Pre-Early Days, Part III Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow; a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing. -From Macbeth, William Shakespeare I first started telling you about my origins a little more than a year ago (“The Early Days,” May 12, 2005). That was when I explained how I moved to Maui after college, leaving a now unfathomable existence as hausfrau to a bullying lover in Santa Cruz. I told you about my first two years here, with my new Neil Diamond-obsessed, bartender boyfriend, a Jeep I didn’t yet know how to drive, working four jobs simultaneously in Lahaina, and how I then moved back to San Francisco. I followed that up (“The Early Days, Part II: Sex, Drugs and the Hard Rock,” May 26, 2005) with glossed-over stories of how island fever led to my stint back in the city, figuratively and literally leading the rock ‘n roll lifestyle, having spanking orgies and smoking crack with a naughty Hard Rock Café trainer. Soon after, I curtailed my memoir (“The Paleozoic Era: Pre-Early Days, Part I,” Jun. 9, 2005) with an even earlier tale of life in Beverly Hills with my mom and her rock band manager boyfriend, leading us on tours to Europe and Hawai’i with Van Halen and the like, before said boyfriend ended up in some jail in Peru. Then you learned of our move to Las Vegas (“The Mesozoic Era: Pre-Early Days, Part II,” Jun. 30, 2005) and my many embarrassing phases as a Durannie, a mod, a new waver, a punk rocker and after a move to Palm Springs, a goth and a desert hippie/metal head. But then I redirected my story to more recent times (“The Early Days, Part 3: How I Got the Job,” Oct. 27, 2005), after the HRC trainer and I moved back to Maui and I bounced around several jobs, including serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and $1800 bottles of cognac to the fabulously rich and famous at a Wailea resort. That was when I also told you how I got this here job. The part I’ve left out, probably with excellent subconscious reason, is that last year of high school and up to when I left for college. You see, it was somewhat turbulent times back then. My mother was going through a rough batch of addiction and alcohol abuse, and I felt like I was facing my teenage years alone and unsupervised. My normally clean and responsible record as a good kid, as the daughter who “raised” her mother, and as a teacher’s pet, hit a wall during my senior year of high school. Although I had seen it countless uninterested times before—a mountain of white powder on a glass table at some weekend rental in Palm Springs, lines of it cut with credit cards in the bathrooms backstage—it proved to be too great a temptation to pass up as I stayed up all night and, of all things, studied for my Shakespearean recital in AP English. Ironically, it was the girl I was tutoring who offered it to me and I accepted, ambitiously memorizing (or so I thought) lines of prose along with the stuff that went up my nose. This is sounding like some cheesy after-school special, isn’t it? Well, it could’ve been much worse, I’m sure. All that inevitably happened is that I made a complete ass of myself in front of my AP class, as I blankly repeated the same first line of Macbeth’s famous speech—“Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…. Um… Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow… uh…”—over and over again. I simply couldn’t remember anything else. My sudden drug-induced, erratic behavior resulted in an automatic failure—my first, but certainly not last—a suspension and up to the very final hour, being told I would not be allowed to graduate. Needless to say, the mom was not pleased. We had an ugly battle wherein she warned me of becoming a loser and I coldly replied that she was merely looking at a mirror reflection of herself. You could say it was a turning point. Luckily, I did end up graduating high school that year. And it took a little while longer, but my mom eventually got healthy and actually became one of the top businesswomen in the Coachella Valley—I think she won an award. And she just celebrated her 20th anniversary with my step-dad so that’s something. As for me, I tooled around the desert for a few years, taking classes at the community college, working at a record store, using fake ID’s to get into the clubs where my boyfriend was DJ-ing, and fantasizing about my future as a glamorous marine biologist making documentaries with Jacques Cousteau. And then I moved to Santa Cruz.
