MAUI TIME WEEKLY
BETTER KNOW A CANDIDATE
BY COREY NIELSEN COREY@MAUITIME.COM
Nestor Garcia RUNNING FOR: U.S. Congress, 2nd District
I backed the Akaka Bill. It went down in flames, but I backed it. I see Hawaiians with health problems, their land taken. I’ve always felt we should do something. It’s not much, though, compared to what was taken.
OCCUPATION: Honolulu City Councilman MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you? NESTOR GARCIA: I’m the kind of guy who likes to take risks. For example, as a state representative, I supported same-sex marriage in a district heavily populated by Filipinos, the majority of whom are Catholic. I supported treatment for first-time, nonviolent drug offenders instead of jail. I also pushed for a raise of the excise tax for mass transit, which is not recommended, by the way. I like to get involved in the mix. People need to understand that the decisions we make today will affect us for years to come. They will affect how others see us and how we see ourselves. Some people can’t see past their own busy lives to make a difference. I want to make a difference. What’s the biggest problem facing your district? Education. Congressional District 2 has two-and-a-half times more kids receiving Title I assistance (which provides food assistance for lowincome families). Education, though, is only a symptom of the struggle. Economy and jobs are maybe the real root of it. We need to create quality jobs. The environment is another issue—they’re all related. Oil, global warming. But I really think education
What about the Superferry? Infrastructure: is it there to support it? What about the harbors? Not just the physical, but the human infrastructure. Who’s going to collect the trash? Who’s going to put out the fires, etc.? We need to consider these things. George W. Bush?
is number one. When you’re poor, you’re not given much hope. You should see where I grew up. You wouldn’t want to walk around where I grew up. But I’m an example that with an education you can make it. What do you intend to do about this? We need to reduce spending on the war in Iraq. We need an increase in alternate energy sources. There are four military bases being built in Iraq right now. Permanent bases. Serious installations. Why are these being built if we’re supposedly leaving? Nobody is leaving. We really need to push for alternative energy. What are your feelings on Hawaiian Sovereignty?
EH BRAH!
[Shaking head slowly from side to side] I have the opposite opinion of our governor, who recently called him “one of the best presidents ever.” Exactly the opposite opinion.
nonviolent offenders. What’s the most difficult thing that ever happened to you? I guess I haven’t lived long enough to say something like that. Probably growing up in a single-parent household, growing up on welfare. What’s the last book you read? I’m still reading it. It’s a book about [Theodore] Roosevelt’s trip to chart a river in South America after a political loss. I believe it’s called River of Doubt. It reminds me of what I like about politics. I want to go to uncharted territory. What’s your favorite thing about Maui? The people. C’mon!
Land development? Smart growth. I want you to Google “smart growth” and you’ll understand what I mean. We need transportation between where people live, work and play.
Well, the physical beauty is always there. But everyone told me that I’d meet a lot of good people campaigning out here, and I’m finding that to be true. MTW
Tourism? We are right at capacity. Hoteliers will back me up on this. Yes, old time hoteliers will tell you we can’t take much more. Again, the infrastructure. Roads, sewage, human infrastructure, are all at capacity. We’ll need more cops, more state government workers. Sit t on n it t today,, Sleep p on n it t tonight
Pakalolo?

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the five donkeys who lined up to watch me back my brandnew truck into one of those three-foot yellow cement poles outside a convenience store. Yeah, I know I’m pretty stupid for not seeing a bright neon pole, but you five obviously could. In fact, it looked to me like all of you anticipated my grand collision and stood around just to watch the impact. You clearly thought it was hilarious when it did happen, and laughed and laughed as you went back to work. Here’s a thought—next time you see somebody like me doing something stupid like that, how about yelling out a warning?

How Did You Vote on the War, Daddy? Pro-war pols don’t deserve a political future
PHOTO COURTESY OF U.S. ARMY, STAFF SGT. JACOB N. BAILEY
The congressmen and senators who lined up to cast their yeas and nays on Oct. 11, 2002 knew that they were casting one of the most, if not the most, important votes of their political careers. Public Law 107-243, 116 Stat. 1497-1502, the result of the vote to authorize the Bush Administration to attack Iraq, would have incalculable moral, economic and geopolitical implications for the long-term future of the United States. But not every congressman put the interests of his country ahead of his career prospects. With George W. Bush still riding high in the polls less than a year after 9/11, it took courage and foresight—the ability to see a future in which the public would sour on Bush and his wars—to defy him. As is often the case during times of crisis, when history tests the mettle of men and women, courage and foresight were in short supply. Fewer than a third—156 out of 529—dared vote no. Four years later, the Iraq war resolution reads like a classic of embarrassingly brazen propaganda. It says that Iraq posed a “threat to the national security of the United States,” something that anyone with access to a map knew couldn’t possibly be true. It includes the debunked statements that Iraq had “a significant chemical and biological weapons capability” and was “actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability.” It’s obvious to the 59 percent of Americans who think the war was a mistake that the 296 representatives and 77 senators who voted for this ridiculous tripe showed a spectacular lack of good judgment. As a result, nearly 2500 American troops are dead. So are 200,000 Iraqis. Between 18,000 and 48,000 U.S. troops have been
wounded. We have no idea how many Iraqis have been crippled. Nearly $300 billion— more than 100 times the total amount spent to protect American cities from another 9/11—has been wasted. This mess was predictable. In fact, I predicted it. So did many others. Still, the 374 politicians who voted for the war can reasonably argue, this dismal outcome wasn’t set in stone. Only a total idiot, however, could have bought the most bald-faced lie in the 2002 war resolution: conflating Iraq with the 9/11 terrorists. Accusing Iraq of “continuing to aid and harboring terrorist organizations” like Al Qaeda, the resolution contains 19 variants of the word “terrorism” and 10 references to “September 11, 2001.” But Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Now that the political winds have changed, our wormy “leaders” are backing away from having voted for the war in October 2002. “If Congress had been asked [to authorize the war], based on what we know now, we never would have agreed,” probable 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton backtracked in a fundraising letter to Democrats. “Americans should argue about the war,” now allows John McCain, a slimy Republican who argued on the Senate floor in 2002 that “giving peace a chance only gives Saddam Hussein more time to prepare for war.” Hecklers are tormenting Clinton and McCain at campaign appearances with reminders of their pro-war votes. “I think I was wrong to vote for the war,” admits

But war is so pretty!
John Edwards, who will probably watch 2008 from the sidelines in preparation for a run in 2012 or 2016. Second-tier Democratic hopeful Mark Warner, reflecting the militant moderation of state-controlled media, warns against speaking ill of the politically braindead: “I don’t think any U.S. senator, regardless of party, if they had known there weren’t WMD, that we were going to get selected leaks, I don’t think they would have voted for it. Second-guessing people who made a valiant attempt at judgment is not where I am at.” It ought to be. Our elected representatives are paid to make the right choices for our country and its future. They deserve to be held accountable when they fail to measure up. Especially when it’s important. Especially when it’s easy to make “a valiant attempt at judgment.” On Oct. 11, 2002, 156 congressmen and senators stood up for decency and common sense. The others, who proved they were too stupid and short-sighted to do the right thing when it counted, should resign. They don’t deserve our votes, much less a shot at the White House.

LC Watch Bad Date For the most part, it’s easy to see why most establishments that find themselves in the I-sold-alcohol-to-aminor hot seat at a liquor control Adjudication Board hearing are facing the music. A clerk never carded a customer or a bartender just gave a careless glance at an ID—you can argue over the merits of the law, but the violations are clear. But every once in a while, a case goes before the board that is so petty it borders on the ridiculous. The case against Lamont’s, a small retail store in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency, is one such case. On Aug. 5, 2005 at about 8:20 at night, Lamont’s got busted for selling a six-pack of Bacardi Silver 03 malt liquor to a minor decoy working for the LC. According to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas, the minor walked up to the cash register with the booze. The clerk then asked the minor for her ID, which she handed over. Because Lamont’s has a cash register that requires the customer’s date of birth for all alcohol sales, the clerk then punched in the minor’s birthday. And here’s where things went sour for Lamont’s. According to the LC’s reports on the matter, the clerk entered Dec. 2, 1966 as the birthday and rang up the sale. Which would have been great, except the minor’s birthday was actually Dec. 2, 1986. Had the clerk entered that birthday into the register, it would have froze up. When interviewed later by the investigating LC officer, the clerk said she didn’t know why she entered 1966 as the minor’s year of birth, though she seemed sure that’s what the ID said. Unlike many other cases that go before the board, Lamont’s clerk seemed to have tried to do the right thing. She actually carded the minor and attempted to input the correct date of birth into her cash register— not simply punch in 1-1-1-1-11 to speed the customer through like so many other clerks apparently do. Still, Lamont’s didn’t try to fight the case. Pleading no contest to a single charge of selling alcohol to a minor, they wound up with a $2,000 fine, $500 of which was suspended pending no further such violations for a year.

Though not party to the University of Hawai’i’s decision to drop three genetically modified taro patents, the proHawaiian culture, antiGMO decision will bring enough bad publicity to the biotech industry to drop mighty Monsanto a notch or two. Even more impressive, Tesoro moves way up this week on word that one of its storage tanks caught fire on Oahu. This fire shows Tesoro Hawai’i’s amazing power and influence, because it threatens the state’s sole—that is, only— provider of liquid asphalt. Back in April, when the company ran out of liquid asphalt, the state didn’t do repair work that month. Now, according to a state transportation official quoted in the June 14 Honolulu StarBulletin, the state only had enough asphalt on hand to do road paving work through June 16. Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a June 15, 2006 press release on President George W. Bush’s designation of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands as a National Monument: “This seamless partnership between the state and federal government, environmental conservationists, and Native Hawaiian organizations will preserve this special chain of atolls and reefs as a natural and cultural legacy.”

What she didn’t say: Not to put too fine a point on Bush’s decision to preserve the islands—it’s a great victory to all of us, not merely Lingle who has advocated some kind of preservation— but Lingle’s use of the word “seamless” is a bit problematic. According to the June 16, 2006 Honolulu Advertiser, at least some Native Hawaiians are perturbed at the new ban on taking fish out of the monument, even if it was caught by Hawaiians engaging in sustenance fishing. “The access rights we’re talking about is to feed our family,” Native Hawaiian activist Walter Ritte told the Advertiser. “On the one hand, it’s like a natural hatchery up there so we get more food down here, but they should have the option for Hawaiians to collect from the sea. They need to recognize our rights.”

FRIDAY, June 16
Huge news this week for all you Mazie Hirono fans out there. The former lieutenant governor who got beaten by Linda Lingle in the 2002 governor’s race, Hirono is just one of many, many candidates fighting for U.S. Congressman Ed Case’s 2nd District seat. Somebody powerful must have noticed her, because EMILY’s List—the pro-choice, 100,000 member political action committee—just endorsed her. “She has the political experience and the dedication to her work to fight for what is best for her community,” EMILY’s List President Ellen R. Malcolm said in a press release. “[S]he is our best opportunity to retain this historically Democratic seat. EMILY’s List recognizes the importance of this race, and our membership will lend all its considerable strength to seeing that Mazie Hirono is victorious.” This is a big deal not only because the 2nd District is an open congressional seat that has to stay Democratic if that party wants to end Republican rule over the House of Representatives. See, EMILY’s List doesn’t mess around. If their polling shows that Hirono is likely to win the Democratic Primary—and it does—then you can pretty much take it to the bank because EMILY’s List isn’t known for just throwing around money.
Today the guy who’s running for U.S. Senator against fellow Democrat Daniel Akaka—U.S Representative Ed Case (D, 2nd District)—voted with 255 other representatives—the vast majority of whom were Republicans—to approve House Resolution 861, which among other things “declares that it is not in the national security interest of the United States to set an arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment of United States Armed Forces from Iraq” and that “the United States will prevail in the Global War on Terror, the noble struggle to protect freedom from the terrorist adversary.” The resolution is non-binding, but it forms a critical part of the Republican’s master plan to retain control over the U.S. Congress. Practically drowning with patriotic glory and jingo fever, the resolution proudly shouts to the world that the U.S. will never back down in Iraq, even though the Pentagon is right now this second working out the final details on withdrawing most— but not quite all—of the American soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines currently fighting in Iraq. They should announce the plans sometime before the big vote in November. This way the GOP can trumpet steadfast resolve, even as the generals are heading for the exits. And thanks to guys like Ed Case, the Republicans can call the whole thing “bipartisan.”
THURSDAY, June 15 I’m not really sure, since all the details aren’t in yet, but given today’s very preliminary news reports and headlines, I think President George W. Bush’s decision to designate the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a National Monument—which will restrict access and end all fishing in the environmentally delicate region—is the first thing he’s done since he took office in 2001 that isn’t stupid, evil, corrupt, moronic, stupid, anti-democratic, tyrannical, idiotic, stupid, poorly-articulated or all of the above. But like I said, all the details aren’t in yet.
SATURDAY, June 17 Ahhh… Ed Case. Fascinating guy. Looking over his 2006 Congressional Report—the glossy full color flyer he sends out every year—“prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense”—to tell us what a great U.S. Representative he is. Bulleted under the headline “109th Congress (2005-2006) Highlights,” Case listed a modest 60 of his “efforts,” including but not limited to “Advocated for full federal funding of state and local homeland security obligations,” “Sought adequate funding of veterans obligations,” “Opposed use of [Social Security] trust fund for non-Social Security purposes” and “Opposed unauthorized and warrantless wiretapping/surveillance of American

citizens.” Yeah, these things are all great, but don’t they fall under the bare minimal obligations of our nation’s elected representatives? Do we pat the judge on the back when he boasts that never in all his years on the bench did he ever send a man he knew to be innocent to the gas chamber? We’re happy for him, but we also expect such behavior from every man and woman who wears the black robe. Then why should we cheer Case when he says he “opposed” illegal wiretapping by the National Security Agency or “advocated” that the federal government spend all the money it said it was going to spend on protecting its citizens?
Hi Dad.
MONDAY, June 19 Okay, maybe I’m coming down a bit hard on Congressman Case. He did oppose any oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)— something Senator Akaka has long supported and voted for. And he’s tried to get the federal government to investigate Big Oil for alleged “monopolistic behavior and gas price gouging.” No way the Bush Administration is going to all any real snooping around that, but still, it was a nice gesture. And he’s voted against raising the debt ceiling—a routine move in the Congress whereby a bunch of supposed “fiscally conservative” Republican representatives get together and vote to spend more money than they’re legally allowed. Oh, what’s this—Case’s Highlights brochure also says he’s “appeared in national media in D.C., New York, Chicago and elsewhere to focus attention on [the] budget crisis.” National media?! What a brave guy, being so willing to go on coast-to-coast television to tell the American people that we’re in a budget crisis. Love him or hate him, you can’t question that he’s U.S. Senate material.
TUESDAY, June 20 Hey, today’s online Pacific Business News says gas prices are dropping! In fact, the price of crude oil has dropped to less than $69 a barrel, which in turn has driven down prices at Maui’s pumps to something insane like $3.61 a gallon. How utterly glorious. A 5-year-old boy in Broward County, Fla., preparing to enter kindergarten, is believed by genderidentity experts to be the youngest kid in the country whose family supports his decision to live completely as the other sex (according to a May profile in New Times Broward-Palm Beach). The parents doubt that the unnamed now-girl (dubbed “Nicole Anderson” in the article) is “just going through a phase,” because of “her” early, constant, and insistent female preferences and comments, e.g., “I want the fairy princess to come and make my penis into a vagina.”
BRIGHT IDEAS New Scientist magazine reported in May that the Pentagon’s cuttingedge research agency, DARPA, was considering a human-launching device that works like a cannon, to blast special-forces troops (and maybe firefighters and police officers) at just the right trajectory so that they land on hard-to-reach locations, such as rooftops.
THE CONTINUING CAMPAIGN TO MAKE EVERYTHING PERFECT The principal of Liberty Elementary School in Colleyville, Texas, authorized an enlarged photo of a nickel on this year’s yearbook cover, but with “In God We Trust” deleted so as not to cause offense— but then handed out stickers with those four words so that students could place them on the cover photo if they wished. And a British government agency recently decided to spend the equivalent of $33 million over 10 years to encourage women and minorities to become fishermen

Said a police detective, “It’s like all he wants is to be in the presence of a woman with a cast on and have her attention.” And in April in Wausau, Wis., Thomas Vogedes, 58, was sentenced to six months’ probation for incidents in which he hung dozens of bras and panties (new and used) from car mirrors and videotaped them.

When a court clerk tracked her down, Zabolotny asked if she could just give it back and forget the whole thing, but the clerk said no. And in Williston, N.D., in March, Ryan Wright, 20, was arrested for bank robbery, even though he insisted that all he did was walk in to the bank wearing a ski mask and demand money, before saying, “Just kidding” and leaving.

friend of mine calls them the “official birds of West Maui.” There’s at least one in Ka’anapali, but you can find a whole nest of them on North Beach. Bright yellow with long necks and immense beaks that sweep over the land, they’re clearly visible from Honoapi’ilani Highway between the Ka’anapali Beach Resort and that giant pink ziggurat otherwise known as the Embassy Vacation Resort. Of course, I’m talking about the cranes slowly erecting West Maui’s latest hotels and condominiums—they may not actually be alive, but lately they sure seem to reproduce themselves as fast as the birds they resemble. West Maui is changing—possibly more dramatically than ever before. Intense demand for vacations and housing is pushing new home and resort construction all over the island, but it’s in West Maui where the delicate balance between private development and public infrastructure is boiling over. You can get a taste of it today at Kapalua Airport. Standing in the parking lot and looking down towards the ocean, you can see what will become the Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s vaunted Pulelehua project. Off to the left, next to a gulch that looks a lot greener on the pretty Dover, Kohl & Partners master plan illustration than in real life, will be the new elementary school. While Maui Land is donating the 13 acres of land beneath the school and kicking in $2.4 million for its construction, state officials have said it won’t get built until around 2011. When it opens, the kids will have postcard views of Lanai, Honokowai and, once those cranes building Intrawest’s 700 new condos are gone, the North Beach and Ka’anapali resorts. On the right, alongside and wrapping around the airport’s western edge, will be a lot of new open space and trails. They will provide unparalleled views of Molokai, to say nothing of inter-island commuter planes landing at Kapalua. Since there are only a couple dozen takeoffs and landings each day, hikers will be able to enjoy their strolls reasonably

free of propeller noise and aviation gasoline fumes. And in the center, fanning out from the airport to the highway, will be the homes. Lots of homes—882 to be exact, half of which are slated to be affordable to working-class people—lined up on lots of brand new streets. Assuming Maui Land continues to get its permits approved, in 2009 new residents will be able to gaze out their windows at the ocean, the glorious West Maui sunset and, if projections from a few local citizens hold, a virtual used car lot on what locals like to call Honoapi’ilani Highway. Though the Maui Planning Commission put a few “conditions” on the project, on June 19, 2006 they sidestepped calls to sit on Pulelehua—and all new West Maui development—until new infrastructure like additional schools and roads get built. “Please do not allow this project to proceed without… a requirement that a school, as well as measures to improve traffic, be in place before any construction can commence,” former Maui Planning Commissioner Louise Ross wrote in a June 1, 2006 letter to the current commissioners. “It is unfortunate that the two massive projects presently underway on North Beach, were allowed to proceed without requiring the developers to participate in sewage treatment plant improvements and traffic abatement measures. Please do not allow these problems to compound by allowing this new project to be built without imposing the above conditions.” Most of the people who spoke at the June 19 Pulelehua hearing supported the project, touting the promised affordable homes that would make half the housing. Some openly mentioned they worked for Maui Land & Pineapple, and at least one wore her snappy red Kapalua Land Co. polo shirt. But retired Maui Community College professor Dick Mayer—who is also a member of the Maui General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC), which is charged trashing out a new general plan for the entire island—asked that the commission kill Pulelehua and every other West Maui project it sees.
“You haven’t assessed the impact on West Maui infrastructure,” he warned the panel. “There are many, many roads that need to be built.” Earlier this month, Mayer and 18 of his GPAC panelists voted to send a strongly worded letter to all Maui County Councilmembers and Planning Commissioners saying much the same thing and asking that they halt further development approvals until work onWest Maui infrastructure begins. Citing an alleged Open Meetings Act violation at that GPAC hearing, the county’s attorneys have prevented county officials from getting the GPAC letter. But at the June 19 Pulelehua hearing, Commissioner Jonathan Starr agreed with just about everything Mayer said. Calling the project “the wrong time and the wrong place” for affordable housing, he made a motion that his colleagues turn down the project entirely. “Until we catch up in terms of planning,” he said, “we should allow GPAC to do its work.” Just one of Starr’s colleagues agreed with him and his motion ended up dying. But his recommendation for a moratorium—a dead halt in what has been an inexorable march to a mythical land known in developer circles as “build-out”—is neither new nor particularly radical. Once derided as unrealistic, especially when skyrocketing real estate values make it nearly impossible for working people to buy their own home, a moratorium may be Maui’s last hope to stay Maui. That’s because Pulelehua is just one part—a considerable part, but a part nonetheless—of a problem that spans the Westside. According to numbers crunched by Mayer, of the 20,553 housing units already committed for Maui—thus not including Pulelehua, which hasn’t yet earned final approval—an astonishing 7,483 of them will go up in West Maui. It’s a major increase in the Westside’s size and population. And while it’s less than the 8,512 getting built in Central Maui, it’s still an immensely high number for a region restricted to a single road in and out of town. And that’s not going to change for at least another decade— assuming the state ponies up the estimated $100 million it would take to build a Lahaina Bypass. Yet the homebuilding goes on. Since a great many people work in West Maui but live elsewhere, the rest of island will reap the benefits of this planning imbalance.
“No one has really wanted to make a good assessment of what is needed in West Maui,” Mayer told me. “Unless this is done, people won’t be able to live here. Young people can get jobs, but they can’t live here. What’s the road through Olowalu and Ukumehame going to look like?” West Maui has been a decade away from a Lahaina Bypass for the last 20 years. To its credit, earlier this year Maui Land helped start “Bypass Now,” a group dedicated to push for some kind of alternative road in and out of Lahaina. While laudable, land developers like Maui Land also take advantage of the uniquely permissive Maui planning world. On the mainland, developers have to pay substantial “impact fees” if they want approval for the big residential and commercial projects. The logic is that the company that stands to profit from bringing so many new people into an area should have to pay to alleviate the corresponding drain on the public infrastructure. As a result, developers routinely pay traffic fees, school fees, sewage fees, water fees and even “community benefit” fees. Maui’s different. Here, land developers don’t have to pay very many fees to get their projects approved. Those fees they do pay tend to be, as Dick Mayer put it, “a joke.” For instance, take the $2.4 million Maui Land & Pineapple is giving over for the new elementary school in Pulelehua. That’s great and all, but new elementary schools cost about $35 million—more than $100 million if you want a high school—which means the developer is contributing a little less than seven percent of the cost. This, at a time when it seems everyone, including Maui Land, acknowledges that Lahaina schools are already overcrowded. It’s not really fair to bash MLP for this, since they’re only doing what the county asks them to do. But that may change: county officials have long talked of asking developers to pay more impact fees for the traffic their projects inevitably cause. For the last few years, a plan to charge developers a fee per every new housing unit or 1,000 square feet of commercial space based on projected increased traffic and highway expansion costs has floated around the county
council. As it is, the plan is flawed, most notably because it’s wildly favorable to West Maui developers: a company building a new hotel in Ka’anapali would be hit with a $5,957 per new room charge, while the same developer building the same hotel in Wailea would have to pay $14,670 per room. “I’m told that there are and there are not traffic impact fees,” said Sharyn Matin, an attorney and founder of the non-profit organization West Maui Preservation Association (WMPA). “It’s up and down. Everywhere in the world you have to pay impact fees. The county may not be able to charge you, but I can.” Matin may be on to something. Last year WMPA— pronounced “Wompa”—forced developer Intrawest to pay small but significant impact fees for its 700-unit condo complex in North Beach. She did so by “intervening” in the case—legally standing for people, like herself, who live near the project—to get Intrawest to pay attention to the increased traffic and potential environmental harm the project was going to cause. On Feb. 2, 2005, Intrawest and WMPA settled out of court. The developer agreed to build a number of pedestrian bridges to protect the shrubbery and delicate sand dunes along the shore—“the only bit of history we have left showing what the beach was like pre-development,” said Matin. They also said there would be no pile driving at the construction site. She also got Intrawest to agree to pay $2.5 million in traffic impact fees, some of which will go towards synchronizing the lights along Honoapi’ilani Highway. And there’s a smaller “community benefit impact fee” that will “manage and distribute funds for projects benefiting he community of West Maui.” Still, these are stopgap measures. Many thousands of new residents from all the new residential, hotel and commercial development will pour onto West Maui’s already clogged roads, which in turn will routinely back up traffic clear to the Pali. It’s happening now, and with the recent Pulelehua approval, any hope of alleviating it seems a distant dream. MTW

Scoping the menu, I found a bountiful selection of preparations ranging from “Evil Prince” (chicken, beef or shrimp with bamboo shoots, basil, coconut milk and red curry paste over shredded cabbage) to “Crispy Cornish Game Hen” (one pound whole Game hen, herb marinated and deep fried served with sweet chili sauce). They also serve plenty of soups, salads, noodle and rice dishes, as well as seafood and vegetarian options. To my pleasant surprise, there are about 20 items in this category and not all of them were based around tofu. Alright! I started with a large Singha beer ($7.50) and vegetarian Thai spring rolls ($7.95). The spring rolls were crispy fried and filled with long rice noodles, cabbage, carrots and onion. They came with lettuce, mint, cucumber and a really good pineapple sweet and sour sauce that had ground peanuts. So tasty, and available with chicken, too. There’s a little note on the bottom of the Maui Thai menu warning customers that the chef’s idea of hot is pretty damn hot, so if you want to be
spicy, it’s best to try out the medium before you get ahead of yourself. I, of course, love all things spicy, but I heeded their warning once I had decided on the sautéed chili tofu ($8.95) and only ordered medium spicy. My server rewarned me that spicy was pretty hot, but I stuck with my decision. My partner in crime went for the Thai beef steak ($9.95). Our entrees arrived shortly after devouring the veggie Thai spring rolls. A large bowl of white rice between us, I looked down at one dish, piled high with tofu sautéed with bell peppers, kaffir onions, black mushrooms, baby corn, bamboo shoots, carrots and basil in red chili sauce. I scooped white rice onto my empty plate and then spooned the veggie and tofu mixture on top. Then I ladled even more sauce over that. I probably should have done a tastetest first, but I was thinking with my stomach, not my brain. It was so good, but oh, so very spicy! I couldn’t stop eating the food, but I was also emptying glasses of water like I had just spent three weeks in the desert. My lips were tingling, and not in that wasabi sting kind of way that goes away after just a minute, or that Mexican salsa sting that burns your mouth worse when you drink water. It was that really good but really long-lasting Thai sting that I’ve been looking for. My companion, chuckling at me and my water guzzling, thoroughly enjoyed his grilled, sliced beef with onions served with a tangy Thai steak sauce over chopped lettuce and topped with sesame seeds and green onions. “It tastes just like when you smell beef cooking,” he said. But I wasn’t really paying attention to that. I was too busy cleaning my plate at my new favorite Thai restaurant. MTW

I Knew It! Sunday, 1-2 p.m., Borders Books, Kahului [HEALTH] In recent years, scientists have uncovered data to support theories that cocoa may help keep high blood pressure down and increase circulation, while coffee may lower the risks for such afflictions as type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, liver damage, Parkinson’s disease and Mondaymorningitis. Yeah, that’s right: chocolate and coffee are GOOD FOR YOU. And I knew it all along. Of course, we’re talking about consumption in moderation but whatever. Wanna hear more proof? Come to this free talk from doctor of holistic health and registered herbalist, Steve Blake, author of Healing Medicine, as he presents “Chocolate, Coffee and Ginseng,” sharing his surprising and fabulous research on plant antioxidants. Ginseng, too? Oh boy! For more info, visit www.naturalhealthwizards.com. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

In Your Face!
Camp Hip Hop
Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m. at Unity Church
Thursday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Studio Maui (Haiku Marketplace)
[HEALTH] It’s amazing how much tension you can hold in your face. We always assume our tension goes straight to our necks and backs, but stress gets into all of your muscles. Sabrina Stevens has 28 years of experience in ridding the tension from your face, neck and jaw. Not only will this relieve your muscles, it’s supposed to keep you looking younger as well. Experience a different kind of yoga/pilates. $30. Unity Church is located at 483 S. High St. in Wailuku. Call 2429327 or 341-6870. [HEIDI KING]
[DANCE] Quick! What do Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera and Kevin Federline have in common? (Sorry, this is not an off-color joke). The answer is, regardless of their less than inspiring behavior, they’re all really, really good dancers— which is a skill that comes in handy, especially if you’re trying to break the ice at an awkward high school dance. Bring the kiddies to Studio Maui this Thursday and Friday, and they’ll learn to do more than just “lean back” and shake their “laffy taffy.” Tito Reyes, a former Maui Arts & Cultural Center theater guest instructor now dancing, choreographing and teaching in Los Angeles, will be hosting this youth dance camp. Admission is only $5, which is far cheaper than the cost of the humiliation of being “served” in front of your classmates. So hide the PS2 and head up to Haiku for the last two days of this event. Maybe one day your son or daughter will be the next M.J., XTina, or K-Fed— on the dance floor, anyway. Call 575-9390 or visit www.thestudiomaui.com. [COREY NIELSEN]

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Multiple Medias Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Seabury Hall [ART/MUSIC] Normally, when you go to see a show, you get a basic story with basic sound. This multi media sequel to Tony Walholm’s, “Thief of Fire” promises to be so much more. Unrequited Luv Reeves and Bullock make homey romance from afar Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Auburn (Proof) performs the repellent task of drafting a Swiss cheese script for The Lake House based on Lee Hyeon-seung’s original 2000 South Korean film Il Mare. While the movie isn’t as bad as its dubious trailer portends, it suffers terribly from a truncated narrative puzzle device that connects two lovers from different eras via an old-fashioned mailbox at a lake house.

From a quaint but unique lake house that his father (Christopher Plummer) built, journeyman architect Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) finds himself in a love letter romance across time with Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock). The time-cursed lovers exist two years apart, and yet are somehow able to communicate as if they were carrying on an immediate interactive conversation. Split-screen visuals frequently veer drama into comedy as Reeves and Bullock do a commendable job of masking some of the plot’s glaring potholes with their intrinsic onscreen chemistry. Director Alejandro Agresti (Valentin) will not be accused of being a visionary or even literal director. In a movie where the main character is a house, Agresti never takes the time to properly introduce the viewer to its finite interior spaces that hover 10 feet above the water. Designed and built specifically for the film, the house is an enchanting piece of iron, glass and wood architecture. It’s a Swiss cross design with all glass walls surrounding a center area occupied by a large tree that links the interiors of its four equal sized rooms. The center roof opens to allow sun and air to bathe the home’s interior tree, and yet the director makes an incalculable mistake by constantly returning to an attic that clearly doesn’t exist. Agresti is too selfish with his camera to disclose intimate details of the home’s interior spaces, and it’s in keeping with this refusal of logic that
I don’t see any lake or house here
he obscures the love story at the heart of the film. Alex is a dog-loving architect who functions as a contractor boss at a suburban building site where his crew completes a 40-home community. Alex has been out of touch with his brother Henry (well played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and his father Simon because Alex has been unsuccessfully attempting to either “forgive or forget” his father for unspoken sins. The subplots here, as with Bullock’s character Kate, feel cobbled together and never assist in elucidating the intangible romantic connection between Alex and Kate. Early in the story, Kate attempts to save the life of a man struck by a bus across the street from Chicago’s Daly Plaza where she eats her lunch. Although we only see him from the back, we realize that this is Alex, and that his spirit has invaded Kate’s body on some level that she is left to grapple with on a day-to-day basis. The story flips back on itself as we discover that although Alex, circa 2004, moved into the house after Kate moved out, circa 2006, he had already lived there before her as witnessed by his dog’s paw prints on the entrance deck to the house. This kind of irritating flip-flop syllogism plagues the story during which Alex and Kate attempt to schedule a 2006 meeting at the homage-titled restaurant “Il Mare.” The Lake House does arrive at a certain romantic inertia in spite of its overstrained narrative puzzlement, but it wraps up before the long-awaited resolution can take hold. There’s no coda. The impact of the movie rests on one scene between Alex and Kate where they meet and dance together at a birthday party thrown for Kate by her former fiancé Morgan (Dylan Walsh). The couple strikes up a secluded conversation and relate on a romantic level that leads to a gentle dance and a meaningful kiss. It’s the one time that their relationship feels real. MTW

Marty’s Guitar The Hard Rock Café welcomes local musician’s memorabilia for the first time ever We’re talking about the first guitar he ever played in public. Originally belonging to his great uncle, the 1950’s rockabilly-era jazz guitar was given to Marty Dread by his cousins in New York after his uncle died. Marty then played the electric-acoustic guitar in Hawai’i’s premier talent show, Brown Bags to Stardom, when he was a junior in high school. Soon after, Marty got a Gibson Les Paul—like the kind Bob Marley played—and retired his vintage Heit to the back of his closet. Now Marty’s guitar is featured at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina, along with other mementos from artists like Dave Matthews, Maroon 5, Sublime and Velvet Revolver. The autographed Heit guitar is currently mounted, labeled with a wooden plaque and hanging on the wall next to the kitchen door, between Jimmy Buffett’s acoustic guitar and a photo of Bob Marley. It’s a big deal. And it’s an unprecedented move by the Hard Rock Café, who generally feature memorabilia from more nationally known Rock ‘N Roll’s Hall of Famers, Grammy Award winners and MTV-mavens. Marty Dread—for all his accolades in nearly 20 years of playing music—is the only musician from Hawai’i ever to have something on the wall. “I don’t think I’ve grasped the full monty of having people walk by and see it and be like, ‘Who’s that guy?’” said Marty. “Hopefully, this will lead

Oh no! He’s stealing his own guitar! the way for other Hawaiian musicians to get stuff on the wall, like Lahaina Grown— this is their hometown.” The momentous occasion comes at an appropriate time for the prolific Maui entertainer who has filled the Lahaina Hard Rock Café’s only regular weekly live music slot for over five years.
MAUI TIME WEEKLY
His album Next Level was released earlier this month. At the end of the month, Marty embarks on a mainland tour opening for Willie Nelson. And he has two albums coming out July 4: one album he did with a band called Harmonic Tribes, featuring Nelson’s sons, that will be released on Nelson’s Lost Highway label,
and another—a duets album called In Good Company—with Willie Nelson, Anthony B., Junior Reid and Fiji. One of the songs off this album, “No Ice in Paradise”—a track produced by the Mad Professor that addresses the crystal meth problem in Hawai’i—will be featured in an upcoming episode of Dog the Bounty Hunter. This summer also marks the first time Marty will perform at Jamaica’s annual Reggae Sunsplash—ironically, it will also be the first time Hawai’i’s Reggae Ambassador will set his bare feet on Jamaican soil. It’s been a banner year for Marty. He admits that the attention now, followed by the high energy and pressures of the next few months, will be a good indicator of where his career goes next and how he handles the next level of notoriety. “I didn’t think I’d embrace it so much,” he said. “But it’s not gonna be forever so I want to really enjoy it while it lasts. We’ll see, I guess.” The addition of Marty’s guitar is part of a recent move by Hard Rock to update their stash of historical music goods. In the process, the restaurant’s three well-known, oversized clocks—telling time in New York, London and Maui—were pulled down and gotten rid of. That bothered Marty somewhat, since he now has no idea when to stop on his Monday night gigs. “I guess I could get a watch but I don’t wanna break up my life into little pieces,” said Marty. “It kinda goes against my fabric! I’d rather let the sun set on my life in its own time.” MTW

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Everyone agrees: you move at your own speed when processing life’s events, and that’s usually a bit slower than the breakneck pace most of the rest of us pursue. You need to retreat into the safety of your shell and decide how best to react to the world, only emerging when you’re ready. Impatient, pushy people who won’t let that happen can cause problems. Let’s forgo those potential explosions, shall we? You need time? We’ll give it to you. All you need to do, in no uncertain terms, is ask.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Go ahead, peel up that carpet. See what’s underneath the dingy old thing. You might be disappointed at first by the crappy linoleum you find there. That’s why you should rip that shit up too. Don’t even stop at the much cooler retro print linoleum beneath that. Persist until you get to the gorgeous hardwood that’s been hidden for decades. It’s there, and worth getting to. Don’t waste time marveling at the idiots who first decided to cover that beauty in the first place. Just be glad someone—you—was smart and determined enough to uncover it again.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I’ve never actually met an insincere Virgo. You generally deal with people as they are, without putting too many filters or censors between what you think and the world. This is a good thing, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Please remember that when you receive advice to be more political this week. You’ll never be good at that shit, so I say don’t bother, especially when your beautiful, tactless authentic self is so much more appealing than any more diplomatic, edited version you could come up with.

In cities, people have a tendency to use public spaces as their living rooms. They deal with everything out in the open, whether it’s arguing with their lovers, popping zits, crying, making out or sometimes even having a pee. Privacy is sometimes such an unaffordable commodity that people learn to do without. What have you been going without, without noticing? You’re about to find out, when it suddenly reappears in your life. Will you make room for it, welcoming it back, and risk missing it if you ever lose it again? Or will you carry on, happily, as you have been?
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Scorpios often go grey early. I think it’s the consequence of not shying away from extremes, especially within your own minds. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Our world would be so much cooler and more evolved if more people were willing to just go there. So don’t be ashamed if you’ve got these little physical indicators of your hard-won wisdom, or life forbid, dye them dark. Some of us are looking for just those signs. It’s how we recognize family.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) There are a thousand reasons why you shouldn’t just lay down and take it, but that still might be your best move anyway. After all, fighting the annoyances you’re facing would involve acknowledging them, thereby strengthening them and making them that much more difficult to defeat. Accepting your fate passively and peacefully takes a lot less effort on your part, and actually makes you that much harder to affect.

Humankind has been using substances to alter their experience of life since before recorded history. But that doesn’t mean you need to be a slave to it, or anything else for that matter. I know you’re not a big fan of the cold turkey thing; most of the things you do, or the movements you make—in any direction—are done in increments. But because you’re kind of a slow mover and changer in general, you can all too easily get stuck without making anything happen at all. Break out of the rut. Even if you only do two things towards improving your situation, it’d help a little, and make the next two that much easier.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) There is such a thing as being too flip, you know. You attract people because of your easy good humor and laidback nature, and that’s great. What you might not know, however, is that you also put people off by your apparent inability to really get serious or heavy. But do you really want someone who desires intensity and passion writing you off because they don’t think they could get those things from you? Don’t you have them? The first step, of course, is finding someone to share them with, which means letting people know they’re available.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes you impress me, Pisces, with your incredible lack of judgment. Sometimes, of course, this is a dangerous or slightly negative thing. However, I believe it generates far more positive benefits, which is probably why you haven’t tried to become more cynical and discerning (unless you’ve been really badly burnt). However, every once in a while, even you get a little warning light behind your eyes about something or someone. You may not trust this rusty, infrequent warning signal, so I urge you to pick one of your most critical and shrewd friends (a Leo or a Scorpio, perhaps?) and see what they think.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
WEBSITE www.mauitime.com
MAILING 33 N. Market St., #201 Wailuku, HI 96793-1742
DROP OFF 33 N. Market St., Ste. 201, Wailuku
Have another cookie, Aries. You need to indulge yourself just a little, this week, to distract from the bits of unpleasantness you also have to deal with. Sugar will help the medicine go down, as you know, and probably won’t do you much harm in the process. So don’t deprive yourself. It’s important that you don’t shy away from all the lame shit that you’ve just got to do this week; if you leave it untended it’ll just snowball and become something monstrous and truly overwhelming. Mix in some treats and reward yourself, often, for just rolling up your sleeves and taking care of business, even when it sucks.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You don’t often go into total hermit mode, but when you do, it can sometimes seem tricky how to get out of it. Playing catch-up with all your neglected friends and fam is exhausting; it might wear you out and send you right back into isolation before it’s half-done. I say get that shit out of the way, fast. Have a party. Invite everyone over. This week’s the best time to do it. Go on, what are you waiting for? You’ve got to get those invites out, buy some goodies and some booze, and then just wait for all that long-absent love to roll in.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re like a complicated city; beneath your surface tunnels connect everything to everything else. Given enough time, you can draw lines between obscure and wildly different ideas and virtual destinations. It’s actually this talent that you’ll be called upon to wield this week, as people need to find ways to connect to other people or ideas that they’d normally not have access to. We’re counting on your odd, overactive mind to build the bridges we need to go the places we want to go. Not only will it solidify your rep as everyone’s go-to guy/gal, but it’ll make your world better, too. CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

Best Way to Meet a Mate People are always asking me, “How do we get with the chicks/dudes?” And to tell you the truth, homeys—I have no idea. I mean, sure, there are the bars and the late-night lines at Jack in the Box and those super VIP parties I crashed at last week’s Film Festival in Wailea, but I’m no expert in meeting potential mates for long-term potential. So on the sly, I asked a few of my more intelligent, less-barhopping single pals and this is what I got… ME: What’s the ideal way to meet a guy? SHE #1: Accidentally. Like in a bookstore or a record store or at the beach. Somewhere that you just somehow come together and realize that you enjoy one another’s company, but if it doesn’t work out, they aren’t gonna be all up in your space (like a work associate or classmate).

So... you’re at the bookstore or record store or beach, and then... they talk to you? What do they say?
HAIRCUTS
Something small talkish. Like, “I just bought that record last week. It’s amazing. Do you have their earlier stuff?” and then it snowballs into a lengthy conversation where you find out the two of you have stuff in common and similar senses of humor and interests.
•Men,, Women & Children n $30
But do you or they initiate conversation, ideally? Does it matter? Ideally, he starts it. But, if it starts out that small, it doesn’t matter. Oh, I have a perfect example; that guy I met on the plane. I leaned forward to push my bag under the chair and he looked over and smiled, then a baby cried and we both sort of chuckled and I said, “Is it gonna be like that?” and we talked the whole rest of the way.

ME: What’s the ideal way to meet a girl? HE: You’re asking ME? I’m talking “ideal” here—how would you love to meet a cool girl, ideally? Probably at a concert or museum or something.

And then what? Do you say something to them or do they initiate conversation, you know, in an ideal situation? Is this going into your column? We’re just chatting here. Sheesh! It’s okay if it is. It might. Just playing around with ideas right now. Just answer the freakin’ question, please. Well, I guess the ideal way for me to meet a girl is at a museum. That way I know she’s smart and cultured even before I find out if she can speak English. I suppose I’m walking around, checking out the various paintings or sculptures or antique airplanes or whatever it is they have there, and I see her stopped and studying something I happen to know something about, which gives me an excuse to talk to her. Is that sufficient? Yes, thank you.

Cool. *** ME: What’s the ideal way to meet a guy? SHE #2: Through a mutual friend. Is that correct? Why do you ask? Just curious. So like, you’d want to be set up by mutual friends or you all just happen to be hanging out together somewhere?

The former. I’d want it to be a real date but when mutual friends set you up, they usually have your best interests in mind and hopefully know the type of person that appeals to you. Are you getting set up by someone? Oh no. I don’t think I’ve ever been set up, come to think of it—I think it’s because my friends have my best interests in mind. Ha! And I barely know the type of person that appeals to me, anyway...
Sweet Life Fruit Co.
Guys always follow their dicks so naturally they’re going to flock to a girl they’ve watched give it up. It’s an ideal way to meet guys but doesn’t mean the guys you meet will be ideal. But you know, guys are like buses—another one comes along every five minutes. Or, at least, buses on the mainland do anyway.
