BETTER KNOW A CANDIDATE

BY GENA GAMMIE GENA@MAUITIME.COM

Pat Borge RUNNING FOR: Councilmember, MakawaoHaiku-Paia District

What’s the most difficult thing that’s ever happened to you?

OCCUPATION: Owns and operates Makena Stables with his wife, Helaine

Probably the hardest thing was to get my house. I had to work very hard to try to get a down payment. Thank God I had friends. You know, locals always say, “No can, but can,” and that’s what I say. Never give up. A lot of people think they won’t be able to make it on this island, but with the right people in government we can do it.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you? PAT BORGE: Because I care. I was born and raised on Maui, and I think it is time for a change. It’s time for local citizens to have a voice, and I want to be the people’s voice.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? Well, I got bucked off in an arena at a rodeo in front of hundreds of people. That was pretty embarrassing.

What’s the biggest problem facing your district? The infrastructure. It’s everything from the roads to affordable housing.

What’s the last book you read? Actually, it was a book about that surfer, Eddie Aikau. It’s called Eddie Would Go.

If you’re elected, what are you going to do about the infrastructure?

What are your feelings on Hawaiian sovereignty? I have a lot of friends who are Hawaiians, and they have their rights. As the host culture, they should be treated with respect, and they should have a say in the direc-

tion Maui is going, too. As for sovereignty, I support it. But the only way Hawaiians are going to be sovereign is to be one. Against the United States of America, they cannot be divided. All right, now we’ll try some word association. I say a word and you say the first thing that comes to mind. Superferrry.. Public hearings. I’m a firm believer in public hearings. Okay, next word: George W. Bush.

[Laughing] Who?

What is your favorite thing about Maui?

Land development.

The people. No question about it.

Need controlled growth.

Who is the person you most admire?

Tourism.

Let’s see, I better say my wife, huh?

Well, I’m in the tourist business. We need quality not quantity.

My door will never be closed to nobody. MTW

Parking Lot of Trouble

Casanova’s Appeal

Wailuku Town edges toward ‘revitalization’ Many years ago, the County of Maui used eminent domain to raze a small neighborhood of houses in Wailuku between Market and Vineyard Streets to make way for a public 208-stall parking lot. More than adequate to meet Wailuku Town parking needs, the lot has recently taken on an almost frantic importance to those wanting a “catalyst for economic revitalization” in Wailuku. Representing both intense hopes and withering nightmares, the lot has somehow become the most controversial part of town. Ironically, nearly every private developer or local merchant involved in the debate agrees on what to do with the lot: replace it with a giant parking structure holding at least 450 but preferably 700 stalls. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen any time soon. Parking in Wailuku Town these days is tough (Note: Maui Time Weekly recently began renting an office next to the lot in question). Most street parking is limited to two hours, which Maui Police Officer Keith Taguma relentlessly patrols in his little meter maid cart. The public lot, with its rows of cracked and unstriped but still precious 12-hour stalls, understandably fills by 8 a.m. In the old days, the county would simply identify that Wailuku’s current size and population demands at least a couple hundred more parking stalls, put out a request for bids to build a garage and appropriate the necessary millions of dollars to build the thing. But today, in this era when government is loathe to spend money, the Maui Redevelopment Agency (MRA) is looking for a way to reverse the principle. Seeing the structure as a potential

Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama was indignant. “That is not to be presented,” he said. “If I’m challenged in court that’s fine.” That was back on Feb. 2, 2006, when the Liquor Control Board of Adjudication heard the first of two overservice cases against the Makawao restaurant and nightclub Casanova. Murayama’s retired from the board, but his decision is being challenged in court.

Not a lot of space

engine of growth, the MRA recently put out a Request for Proposals (RFP) to private developers. Two came back—one from the Blue Hawai’i Realty hui and another from a partnership of Agora Realty and Prudential Iwado Realty— offering massive structures linked to condos, shops and big retail stores. The advantages were compelling: all the commercial and residential development would make the project free to the county— which would give up ownership of the land, though—and Wailuku would get plenty of new growth that would further increase local property values as well as bring in new business to nearby merchants. “We feel it’s important to have people here after 5 p.m.,” bidder Steve Bronstein of the Blue Hawai’i Realty hui told the Wailuku Community Association during its June 21, 2006 meeting at the Good Shepherd Church. But the idea of turning a free, unregulated public parking lot into a privately held and gated parking structure in which

everyone would have to pay for parking made local merchants nervous. Citing everything from concerns over parking availability to increased traffic caused by all the new development, the WCA ended up voting against recommending any of the proposals to the MRA. For its part, the MRA actually agreed. Well, kind of. Citing the original eminent domain action that built the lot in the first place as well as the community’s queasiness with giving up such a valuable piece of public land, MRA Vice Chairman Lloyd Poelman said during the panel’s June 26, 2006 hearing that, “whoever has control over that lot has the moral obligation to do what’s best for the public’s interest.” But then the panel voted to table the whole matter to their July 21 hearing. Worried that the Maui County Council— though apparently wanting to retain ownership of the lot—would balk at spending $10 million or so on a new parking garage, the MRA members wanted to hear a more detailed discussion of a potential public-private partnership between the County or them and a private developer. As anyone who parks in Wailuku Town knows, there’s nothing easy about finding a place to park. MTW

During the June 1, 2006 Adjudication Board hearing, LC Director Franklyn Silva announced that Casanova hired an attorney and had gone to court to appeal the board’s guilty verdicts in both cases. Board members seemed more concerned with the possibility that they might have to deal with the matters again than with a judge potentially overturning their decisions. There’s certainly plenty for the judge to look at. In the first case, involving a guy who drank beers all day at Iao Valley and then gone home to sleep before going to the club that night, the board found Casanova guilty of serving a drunk customer and failing to exercise due care. The second case, the events of which happened occur on the same day—May 11, 2005—as the first case, dealt with a woman who drank three glasses of wine in three hours. There, the board found Casanova innocent of serving a drunk and of failing to exercise due care, but guilty of letting a drunk on their premises. The first case brought $3,500 in fines—$1,500 of which was suspended pending no further violations that year—while the second case brought a $2,000 fine with $1,000 suspended. The club paid the fines, but in both cases, Casanova general manager Steven Burgelin thought the board was asking his employees to do the impossible: namely, identify and isolate customers who didn’t seem to be intoxicated. “Financially, we would be better off doing nothing,” Burgelin told me. “Our legal expenses cost way more than the fines. But it’s time to make a point.”

Man, Hawaiian Telcom is in trouble these days. Is it any surprise they recently reported lower than expected earnings, given their very recent, very comical billing problems? Even with 120 new temporary customer service reps, the company still can’t get to every customer’s complaint about bad billing charges. At first, all Hawaiian Telcom did was waive April and May late fees for customers with problems. But now things are so bad that the company is now telling customers to just pay what they feel is the correct amount on their bills and ignore whatever they feel are bogus charges. This is why rich and powerful Washington, D.C.-based global equity firm Carlyle Group—with close ties to Saudi royals and former President George H. W. Bush—bought out Verizon last year? MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in her May 23, 2006 Weekly Radio Address on her 15-20 percent state tax credit for the film industry that goes into effect July 1: “Hawai’i has long been a favorite location for film and television. From South Pacific and Jurassic Park to Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I. and Lost, our islands have captivated audiences for decades… Last year film projects spent $100 million in the state, creating hundreds of jobs and generating $160 million in secondary spending and invaluable exposure.”

What she didn’t say: Of those movies and TV programs cited above, three—South Pacific, Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum—all had to be filmed in Hawai’i because they were about Hawai’i. And that’s because mainland people—and people around the world, I suppose—want to see stuff on Hawai’i. Tax credits or no—all three of those shows pre-dated any corporate welfare from Honolulu to the film industry—those shows were coming here, as will future shows like North Shore (whoops, that was cancelled) and Baywatch Hawaii (ditto, though in that case cancellation was a tragedy).

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, June 21 Once again, the State of Hawai’i’s legislature leads the nation in introducing bills regulating Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). So says a new report put out today by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology, which I originally thought was a hate group but apparently isn’t. Go figure. Anyway, some of the bills include disclosing GMO crop fields—currently carefully guarded corporate secrets—and doling out liability for GMO-related injuries. None of this stuff passed of course, but still, it’s the thought that counts.

THURSDAY, June 22 Looks like Maui County Council Chairman G. Riki Hokama just fired a shot across the proposed Hawai’i Superferry’s bow. It’s not a particularly powerful shot, but it is very accurate. According to a completely legal but utterly toothless resolution Hokama plans to introduce at an upcoming County Council hearing, the good chairman wants a delay in letting the big Superferries into Kahului Harbor until the whole Harbor Master Plan has been updated to include the boats that will haul passengers, automobiles, U.S. Army trucks and who knows what else between the Hawaiian Islands starting sometime next year. He also wants a full environmental impact study on all this. According to today’s Maui News story on the resolution, Hokama says this is necessary because “questions remain regarding the impact of the Hawai’i Superferry operation on traffic circulation, potential county costs, existing harbor users and other concerns.” Yeah, that’s all great Riki, but where were you last year when locals were blown out of the water when they sued to get a full environmental review? Isn’t it a little late to start agitating for big Superferry study when the state’s already shelling out money?

FRIDAY, June 23 So I guess that war in Iraq is going real

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

swell because 86 U.S. Senators voted yesterday to kill an effort to get just about all American soldiers out of Iraq by July 1, 2007. Just 13 senators—including our own Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye—voted to stop “staying the course” and end the war. “Absolutely the worst possible thing we could do at this point would be to validate and encourage the terrorists by doing exactly what they want us to do, which is to leave,” thundered a visibly emotional but non-gun-toting Vice President Dick Cheney on CNN. Senator Majority Leader and presidential hopeful Bill Frist (R, Tennessee) agreed, calling the withdrawal plan a “cut and run” move. Got it—any mention at this point of withdrawing U.S. troops from the bloody stalemate that is Iraq would embolden the terrorists and evil-doers. No more talk of withdrawals.

English but I think we all get the idea. Anyway, Case’s “Agenda” is as modest as his backbencher career in the House. First off, presumably because this is the easiest, quickest thing he could do once he becomes 1/100th of the Senate, Case wants to “Balance Our Budget.” “We must run our country’s finances just as we would our personal and business books,” he said in a press release today. Manage the national treasury as if it were our own—isn’t that what exploded the federal budget deficit in the first place? But I digress: Case also wants to do stuff like “Secure Our Homeland,” “Lead Our World,” “Protect Our Earth,” “Fulfill Our Promises” and “Care For Ourselves.” No word yet on why Case didn’t include “Nurture Our Universe” and “Smite Our Evil Alien Overlords” to his agenda.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

SATURDAY, June 24

TUESDAY, June 27

Oh wow, look at this: The New York Times is reporting today that General George Casey, who commands all U.S. troops in Iraq, has drafted a plan to pull most American units out of Iraq by the end of 2008, with the first cuts beginning this September. No word yet on whether Cheney and Frist have denounced Casey’s withdrawal plan as just another “cut and run” move, but I’m sure they will shortly… Hey, and while I’ve still got your attention, what’s with todays’ Maui News? On the front page we’ve got a big Associated Press story headlined “Whole pigs, goats next ‘big’ thing in barbecue” about a growing trend in roasting whole animals on massive backyard grills, but on Page A6 there’s a Knight Ridder story on how a new poll shows that one out of every four Americans has no close friends. So I guess all that whole hog grilling is being done by the 75 percent of us who have pals we can confide in, right? Or are we simply becoming a nation of loners who sit on our couches watching The Simple Life while chowing down on immense quantities of pork? Apparently, according to the National Barbecue Association (NBA)— yeah, I didn’t know they existed either—it’s the former. “Doing a whole hog lends a festive atmosphere to things,” NBA Executive Vice President Don McCullough is quoted

Lot going on in the county, what with the County Council getting squeamish over all them building permits they’ve approved and the Paia minibypass road finally opening, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out today’s CNN story on conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh. Court-ordered to avoid all prescription drugs—Rush allegedly gets a little too much relief from the OxyContin—Limbaugh got the shaft at Palm Beach International Airport after Customs agents found a bottle of Viagra prescribed to someone other than Rush Limbaugh in his luggage as he was returning from his Dominican Republic vacation. It’s hilarious, and horrific at the same time. Much like Limbaugh himself, I suppose, except for the hilarious part.

as saying in the AP story. “Everybody wants to see it. It’s like watching a wreck.” That friends, is the quote of the year.

SUNDAY, June 25 Sleeping.

MONDAY, June 26 Akaka won’t debate him—would you?— but our beloved U.S. Representative Ed Case (D, 2nd District) is forging ahead with his campaign to unseat the 81-year-old U.S. Senator. Among the company’s charges was that Coppinger had had sex on top of his desk with a co-worker, but Coppinger argued that that should not be a terminating offense, since many other company employees had had sex on his desk, too.

CREME DE LA WEIRD In May, a judge in Reno, Nev., sentenced Raymond Russell George, 58, to five consecutive life sentences for molesting three young girls over a two-year period, but George said he welcomes the prison time because it will give him a chance to use his comprehensive knowledge of the Bible to help inmates find Jesus. George is notorious also for his dreadful inattention to hygiene, which he said is necessary to keep fellow prisoners—potential congregant—from getting too close to him. Otherwise, he said, they “flick boogers at me and fart in my face.”

Britain’s Prince Philip has for at least 30 years accommodated a tribe of 400 “cargo cult” people on the South Sea island of Tanna, who revere him as the human face of an ancestral spirit, according to June revelations by London’s Daily Mail. Both sides have been discreet, but the prince has acquiesced by sending the tribe signed photographs, including one in which he is holding the traditional war club (even though a totally authentic pose would require that the prince hold it while naked). Cargo cults are so named because, lore has it, an ancient god forecast that one day, wealth would fall from the sky, and then, during World War II, it did, in the form of parachuted-in supplies for American troops who used the islands as staging areas.

green light. Apparently I didn’t jump as fast as you liked when the light changed because otherwise why would you feel it necessary to drive into the oncoming lane to pass me? I couldn’t believe that you were speeding as well as passing, right where the 20 miles per hour speed limit sign is posted! Did you care that you were within sight of the Kihei Elementary School? Do you not know the rules about driving in a school zone? Or do you just believe the rules don’t apply to you? Either way, you’re just nuts.

For a society utterly dependent on the internal combustion engine, you people sure hate driving. Okay, you don’t hate driving per se, but you hate traffic, speeding, lousy drivers, traffic, loud motorcycles, traffic, arrogant drivers, traffic, traffic, stupid drivers, gasoline thieves and traffic. At least, that’s what you tell us. And it’s all marvelously entertaining, so please keep those Eh Brah! submissions coming. As always, you can send your completely anonymous denunciations of anyone or anything on Maui to Eh Brah!, c/o Maui Time Weekly, 33 N. Market St., Ste. 201, Wailuku, HI 96793 or email them to ehbrah@mauitime.com. -The Editors To the pretty lady who tried to drive under my 18-wheeler and then shouted at me when I didn’t stop instantly: You and your little car are very cute, but cuteness doesn’t exactly stop 80,000 pounds of rolling truck. In the traffic situation you and I found ourselves in, you’re obligated to stay in your lane, just as I was staying in my lane. Otherwise, very bad things will happen. See, I really hate doing all the paperwork that comes from someone driving under my truck, to say nothing of the fact that it takes 3,000 miles to get the bloodstains out of my tires. By the way, you’re very cute when you’re angry, and I hope to see you and your little car whizzing merrily around the island for a long time to come. So please be careful. This goes out to that guy who insisted on spying on his soon-to-be ex-wife by speeding up and down our road. You know, there are many keiki who walk on the road, not to mention the various cars that park on both sides of the street. So try driving slow—I suggest the speed limit or perhaps slower when you see kids running around—or else there will be more calls to your employer, whose name is so helpfully printed on the side of your vehicle. I don’t know why you don’t trust your wife, because no one else visits her. Look, whatever you do, just slow down, watch your mouth and don’t upset the neighbors. Also, a lot of us have pets and if you hit one of our pets or keiki—well, I think you get the idea. Slow down! Just wanted to explain to the couple in the blue truck with the camper why I gave them the bird times: your reckless, stupid driving put myself and my family in danger. I was driving the blue van on Kahului Beach Road and you kept trying to merge into my lane. See, if you had hit my van, it would have been on the side where my precious two-month-old daughter was sleeping so peacefully in her car seat. I guess you were too busy rushing to get to the Jack Johnson concert to see passing trivialities like my van. But what was the deal with your chick laughing every time I honked my horn at you or stuck my finger out at you? My husband, who was sitting with my baby, would have given her something more to laugh at if you had hit my van. So next time, be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention when you merge into other people’s lanes or you may get more than the flick of the bird.

Just wanted to thank the ignorant girl who rear-ended my sister pau hana time, 5 p.m. on Friday at the Ka’anapali Parkway intersection. Thanks especially for running off because you’re either too young to be driving, had no insurance or was just a flat-out inconsiderate asshole. My sister totally suffers from whiplash because you hit her so damn hard and didn’t even have the decency to pull over and see if she was okay and exchange insurance information and then call the police, like the law says you’re supposed to do. Please, stay off the roads if you can’t comply. Dear young road rager: since very few people like you know how to drive on this island with any sense of etiquette or common sense, let me fill you in on why you had no reason to get out of your car and yell like you did a few weeks ago. See, when I was in the lane next to you at the stoplight and I stepped on the gas, it was with the intention of passing you before the merge. I like to drive at the speed limit, but when you insisted on taking the lead and driving far slower than the speed limit, that’s where your poor behavior started. At first I tried to ignore your ranting at me, but when we reached the traffic jam in Paia it was just too much when you got out of your car and yelled “Get off my ass” at me. Now I can understand that being in a traffic jam is frustrating, but let me assure you, when we were going about five miles per hour, and there was a car length between us, that’s not tailgating. It’s called going slow. So, my young sistah, think twice next time before you jump out of your car and vent your frustrations at someone on the road. You really should get your license revoked. You, sitting in your white SUV, were behind me at the Liloa St. intersection waiting for the

Thanks, punks, for teaching me that a lock on gas caps is useless. One Wednesday night last month, after working long and hard on my car, I parked it in North Kihei. I figured that a lockable gas cap would prevent people from siphoning my expensive gasoline. But you enterprising young bastards just punched a hole through my fuel tank so you could steal my full tank of gas. And you did it under the lights and away from the growing weeds, too. Very impressive—I thought my car was safe, but I was wrong. And when I got into my car that night, the fuel gauge showed plenty of gas in the tank. But I’d only driven a few yards when the fuel light went on. At the gas station, I smelled gas and found a mean puddle forming beneath the car. The next morning, checking out the underside, I saw a paper towel stuck in the gas tank. Unbelievable! Now though I found a fuel tank repair kit and fixed it myself—which I’m proud of, thank you very much—what you jackasses did was unconscionable. How can you sleep at night? This is for the fool in a blue car exiting the Shops at Wailea parking lot on a few Sunday mornings ago. You drove across Alanui and headed towards Kihei as I was on the left lane of Alanui heading towards Makena. I had to change course to avoid a head-on collision, but I couldn’t veer off fast enough to avoid you. Since you hit the back of my vehicle really hard, I figured that you would stop to see the damage on my car or maybe make sure that I wasn’t hurt. Instead you kept on going as if nothing happened. Well, I have some

This goes out to the young lady in the tank top who is in serious need of some driving lessons and an attitude overhaul. You know you’re a crazy bitch, right? It wasn’t enough that when you sat at the light at Pu’unene and Dairy Rd., you continually inched forward as you wait for the light to change. Or that when it finally did go green you charged forward in an attempt to pass as many cars as possible. Or that you had to lurch in front of me at the last second—even though your lane had ended and THERE WERE KIDS ON BIKES on the shoulder! But when I honked at you for almost hitting me, you had to go and flip me off and shout out your window. Then at the next light you jumped out of your car and came storming towards me yelling—and this is what I found most funny—that I needed “to calm the fuck down!” and “Get back to the mainland!” First of all, you didn’t look local yourself, and my 10 years on Maui is surely longer than your time here. Second, it’s customary for someone who has to make car payments—like me—to honk when almost run into by some beat-up cruiser—that would be you. And third, when you’re the only person standing in the middle of the street screaming at someone to calm down, maybe you’re the one who needs to calm down. Anyway, you also asked me, “What did you want me to do?” Here’s a thought: stop acting like a fool who drives around like the street is a racetrack. Clearly, anyone who drives so fast that she nearly hits other drivers and a few kids on bikes needs to “get back to the mainland.” Oh, how I wish all you noise-polluting, wanna-be bad-boy Harley motorcycle idiots who ride Upcountry on Sunday would buy a muffler. How would you like it if I pulled up in front of your house at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning in a flatbed truck hauling a 5,000watt concert sound system and turned it on full blast with the speakers

aimed at your living room window? Because that’s what it’s like when you morons ride en masse up Kula and Kekaulike Highways on Sunday mornings. Whether you’re riding on the lower or upper highway, you ruin Sundays for Kula residents from Crater Road to Five Trees to Keokea. It’s bad enough you usually ride at 80 to 120 miles per hour up Crater Road and on Kula Highway between Rice Park and Grandma’s. But I smile when I see that, because sooner or later the police will be scraping your remains off the pavement, and you will have removed your lame-brained selves from the gene pool—hopefully, before you’ve procreated and passed your cretinism on to progeny. Just want to say Aloha to the asshole in the dark blue 4-door pickup that passed me in the school zone in front of Kula Elementary the other morning. You rode my ass most of the way through the school zone and then decided you needed to pass me on the left—in a no passing zone—and then speed through the rest of the school zone. All that just so you could get stuck behind other traffic from there until your turn onto Pulehu Rd. Your blatant disregard for the safety of little children and other drivers, to say nothing of numerous traffic laws, really warmed my heart. I hope those two whole seconds you gained were really worth risking innocent lives and chancing a $277 fine. I hope you and all the other assholes like you get everything you deserve. Thanks a lot, jerk. All I wanted was a ride into town— a distance of not more than two miles. You were coming out of the complex the same time I was, so I asked you if you were going my way. Without even hesitating, you said no, drove out of the complex and then turned towards town. What the hell? Was giving me a ride going to be that horrible? I was headed to work, though I doubt you care, and was, as usual, freshly showered. Normally I drive, but car problems forced me to hitch that particular day. I would have been in the car with you at most 10 minutes. If you didn’t want to give me a ride, why didn’t you just say you don’t pick up hitchhikers or something like that, instead of just lying to me and then heading off as if I didn’t exist. Sure, I got to work eventually—an hour late. Thank God my boss is an understanding person, unlike you. MTW

Fred’s The best Mexican food comes from Hell’s Kitchen I wanted to go out to dinner on Saturday night. I didn’t want anything too fancy, just tasty food, good times and great company. It sounded like a good time to check out Fred’s Mexican Café in Kihei.

Fred’s Mexican Café 2492 S. Kihei Rd., 891-8600. 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. $ It was very lively at Fred’s, with lots of people, music and a short wait at the door since they don’t take reservations. We sat down in their front area and made friends with a party of 11 waiting to be seated. Later we were seated on the lanai under the warm evening Kihei sky. The setting couldn’t be better for beer and chips. Our server, Leilani, was there in an instant with the house corn chips and fresh salsa, as well as our Dos Equis on tap and orange soda on ice. We also got the evening feast going with Fred’s shrimp quesadilla. A fantastic combo of shrimp, jalapeño and cheese, it’s served hot and gooey with guacamole and sour cream. At the neighboring table, a couple in their 60’s were getting their leftovers boxed up, so I asked them what they liked on the menu. The wife said the enchiladas and the husband enjoyed the fish tacos, but they both came back for the chingaderas—delectable burrito cross-sections dipped in egg batter and breadcrumbs and fried. They’re pretty irresistible once you get started on them. “We were here in March,” the wife said as she was leaving. “And it was

just a great place to eat so we are back. Our condo is just over there. My husband got the combo plate—it’s a lot of food.” The menu is huge, too. It comes in the form of a big tablemat. I ordered a combo plate with fish taco, chicken enchilada and chingaderas. It came with beans and rice and cost me about $11. My husband got a burrito stuffed with fresh chicken breast, black beans and rice. While the menu boasted that all burritos weighed more than a pound, his looked like at least three pounds. The grilled mahi fish taco was excellent, slathered in delicious fish taco sauce. I brought my leftovers home and gave it the second-day taste test and was amazed at how well the taco held up. All of the chicken used in their kitchen, dubbed “Hell’s Kitchen” by a huge mural across the establishment’s wall, is fresh breast meat. They also use black beans, and their Mexican rice is unusual in that it contains veggies. All of it was quite tasty. A little while later our friends Steve and Victoria from Kahului ended up sitting at the table next to us. Victoria’s Caesar salad was a big bed of romaine loaded with medium-size shrimp. “Gosh, there was a lot of shrimp, at least two dozen!” she said. Ironically, they found kismet that night when they realized they were seated at exactly the same table where they’d had their first date years ago—when the restaurant was KKO. I finished up the evening with Fred’s one and only signature dessert, the Chocolate Diablo. The devil was surely involved in this concoction of chocolate mousse, brownie pieces and whipped cream. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to Hell’s Kitchen. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Independence Day Tuesday, all over the USA [HOLIDAY] The day in 1776 when USA declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain has been celebrated every year since. While watermelon, BBQ and patriotic colors are all symbols of this holiday, I think fireworks take the apple pie as the 4th of July representative. I’ve noticed that through the years, fireworks have gotten bigger, louder and more creative. This year the Rotary Club will keep in stride by making the show in Lahaina more explosive—ha!—than ever before. But, you know how that traffic is, so I suggest going up to Lahaina Town early, checking out the hotties on the beach, then head down Front St for some shopping or to see the entertainment. Live music will be performed on the Makai Library lawn and the lineup includes Jahmiel, Jamalaad, Fluid Motion and Omar & Friends from 5:25-8 p.m. Fireworks begin at 8 p.m. and will be shot from a barge post located off Front St. [HEIDI KING]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Maui Invitational Band Festival Thursday through Tuesday, island-wide [MUSIC] There are summer music camps, and there is the 2006 Maui Invitational Band Festival. This multi-venue, multigenre music extravaganza kicks off Thursday with The Festival Wind Symphony Concert at 6 p.m. at the Westin Maui, and concludes with a 4th of July outdoor concert on the Lahaina Library lawn at 5 p.m. In addition to the various live performances scheduled for the 10-day event are a multitude of educational workshops covering a variety of musical instruments and styles. Besides the opening and closing festivities, some of the performance highlights include Friday’s Maui Festival Orchestra Concert, featuring 2006 Grammy nominee Raiatea Helm, Peter Rockford Espiritu and the Tau Dance Theater, Ballroom and Latin Dance professional Rita O’Connor, and legendary vocalist Emma Veary at the MACC’s Castle Theater at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday’s Festival Jazz Concert at the Grand Wailea Resort, featuring the Emil Richards Jazz Quartet, Nassau Suffolk Jazz Vocal Ensemble, and Maui student Jazz ensembles, which begins at 6 p.m. A complete schedule of performances and workshops can be found at festival host Arts Education for Children Group’s website, www.aecg.org, or by calling Bryant Neal of the AECG at 283-3576. [COREY NIELSEN]

Hemp Rally Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Honolli Park, Wailuku [POLITICAL] Last year in April, IHEMP (Industrial Hemp Echelons, Maui Project) was created with the intention of keeping Hawaiian Hemp Laws from expiring. The attempt was in vain, but has nonetheless created a group of people fighting for new hemp laws. Hemp could be a feasible fuel alternative, paper product and possibly a cash crop for Hawai’i. Show your support by attending the rally where you can learn more, enjoy live music, make hemp banners and watch the 1942 film Hemp for Victory. After the festivities, all who are willing are invited to head over to the county council chambers. Email ihemp@hemp.com for more info. [HEIDI KING]

[POLITICAL FUNDRAISER] It’s hard to believe that it’s been 12 years since Newt Gingrich of Georgia and his bomb-throwing band of merry Republicans burst onto the American political landscape and wrested control of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Democrats, which had somehow managed to hold onto it since the Eisenhower Administration. Former congressman, history professor, author (of the novel 1945 where evil Nazis invade the U.S.!) and eminent Fox News guest, Newt gave us the Do Nothing Congress we relish today. And now you can eat scrambled eggs and sausage with him! And it will only cost you $250! All proceeds go to benefit the Maui County Republican Party. For more information or to make reservations, call 874-8028. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

[LECTURE] Well, sign me up! Award-winning international author and practicing physician, Todd Michael, gives a two-hour interactive program exploring state-of-art practical aspects of “Sexual Chemistry: What Actually Works.” In the seminar, Michael will fill us in (eek! sorry) on pheromones, hormones, sex drives, herbal aphrodisiacs, and the chemistry of tantra—basically uncovering (oops again!) the visual, verbal and emotional elements of true sexual attraction. What, you mean it isn’t just beer? The Maui Beach Hotel is located at 170 Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului. $15 at the door. For info, call 875-8820.

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

The Ultimate Illegal Alien The Man of Steel bears a heavy heart An undercurrent of sadness permeates Superman’s return to earth as an alien Christ figure sent here by his father to cure humanity of its endless calamities and crimes. Crucial to the film’s success is newcomer Brandon Routh who fills Superman’s and Clark Kent’s ever-changing shoes with a perfectly mannered nuance of best intentions and calm resolve. Kate Bosworth ideally anchors the story as Superman’s eternal flame Lois Lane with a guarded romantic gravitas that sustains the film’s two-and-a-halfhour duration.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Director Bryan Singer and his gifted design team perform a neat cinematic slight of hand by embellishing the story’s modern day settings with 1930’s art deco touches that hearken back to the era when the Superman comic first began. Most present are effortless brushstrokes of modern day subtext that relate to apolitical issues of global warming, greed for oil and the way the media leads public consciousness. Superman Returns is a meticulous study in how a much-beloved comic book hero and movie franchise can depart enough from its predictable source material to render surprises while still paying reverence to its quintessential narrative and character constraints. We are introduced to the outer space context of Superman’s origin with a striking scene of planetary cataclysm (namely Krypton) that gives way to Superman’s meteor crashing arrival on earth near the farm where his compassionate human parents first raised him from a baby. A brief flashback sequence shows Clark Kent’s discovery as a teenager of his otherworldly powers amid the cornfields of his earthly home. In the five years since Superman last left earth to check on the status of his destroyed home planet, the evertreacherous Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has freed himself from jail

Must you check the oil now? and connived away the fortune of an elderly dying millionaire. Luthor and his assistants pay a visit to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude where they encounter a threedimensional recording of Superman’s father Jor-El (Marlon Brando) bestowing advice to his absent son. Luther steals a set of precious crystals that soon enable him to create a quickly expanding landmass that will end the lives of billions of people and reconfigure North America. Clark returns to his desk job at the Daily Planet where he discovers that Lois won a Pulitzer Prize for an article entitled “Why The World Doesn’t Need Superman,” and that she has a son (Jason) out of wedlock with the editor’s nephew Richard White (James Marsden), a big-hearted pilot. Young Jason (Tristan Lake Leabu) becomes an increasingly important aspect of the story and provides a key element for younger audience members to relate to. The ever-reliable Frank Langella ornaments the story as the Daily Planet’s demanding editor-in-chief Perry White. The first major computer-assisted spectacle arrives when Lex Luthor causes a power outage that disables the release devices on an airliner attempting to launch a space shuttle into orbit. The plane also carries a group of journalists covering the event led by one vociferous Lois Lane. Story and spectacle coalesce as Superman proves his mettle in liberating the shuttle and setting the crashing airplane down in the middle of a baseball field during a game. The action sequence distills all that Superman represents into one lasting moment of exuberant relief. The audience I was with applauded the feat, and I experienced the communal elation as it was kept in check by the weighty emotional undercurrents of John Ottman’s brilliant musical score. As with Superman’s eloquently unhurried assents to the sky and equally deliberate descents to the ground Superman Returns is a powerful knockout. MTW

BY COREY NIELSEN COREY@MAUITIME.COM

Divas, not Dickheads What to expect from a ‘gay night’ at Hapa’s “We can’t dance here,” Johnny said, “without making people feel uncomfortable.” He and Craig looked at me like I was insane, but all I’d done was ask if they’d wanted to dance. My wife and I had brought our friends—a gay couple visiting from Southern California—to Hapa’s on Monday to see Willie K. I thought they were being paranoid until Craig asked, “How many times have you ever seen men dance together?” And I thought about it. “I gotta get out more,” I told myself. That was a few months ago. “South Maui Divas” night is one of only two regular weekly “gay nights” on Maui, the other being Friday night at Horhito’s. Hapa’s has hosted some form of gay night for the last five years. After living on Maui for nearly that long, I decided it was time to experience it. I had no idea what to expect. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was the spread of hors d’oeuvres lining the bar. An attractive plate of fruits, vegetables and candy had been set out

in a very welcoming display. The music, which I was afraid would feature more Cher and Madonna than I wanted to hear, actually featured more Lil’ Jon than Elton John. The crowd was a typical mix of young and old, male and female. The only presumable difference was that the majority was either gay or bisexual. This presumption was supported by the unusual amount of friendliness directed my way; nearly every guy I passed greeted me with smiles and nods. Some of the more outgoing men introduced themselves. “You’re a good-looking guy,” said one gentleman at the bar. “Everyone thinks you’re “fresh meat.” I asked him if anyone might feel insulted by a straight guy showing up. “No,” he laughed, “because they figure if you’re here, you’re gay.” Fair enough. We moved to a table to take in our surroundings. Before long a representative of the Maui Aids Foundation approached. Beaming a wonderful smile, he handed us a package of condoms and continued on his way, spreading his joy like a sex-crazed

The usual surly, posturing frat kings had been supplanted by considerate queens with perfect posture–the club was packed with divas, not dickheads. Everyone I asked agreed that this complete absence of any threat of tension or violence was the biggest advantage of gay night. The only major difference was the most obvious. All around me for the first time, people of the same gender flirted, danced and kissed. Everyone seemed to have a great time, enjoying for just a few hours the freedom to be themselves. Stepping out of the club, I thought of Craig and Johnny. I wished they were allowed more than a few hours a week to let their guard down. Now I’m sure there are some people who won’t read this–I lost them at the words “gay couple” or “men dance together.” And that’s too bad, because they’re just the people who could benefit from the knowledge that gay clubs are not the nightmares they might expect. On second thought, perhaps it’s good they’re not interested. Because who wants them showing up and ruining all the fun? MTW

Santa Claus. We agreed this was a great idea in any club. Looking around, I noticed that people’s clothes seemed to have been carefully selected from their closets, not hastily collected and thrown on from dirty clothes piles. Used to seeing board shorts, teeshirts and slippers, I was thrown by the designer jeans, button-down shirts and stylish shoes. This gave the atmosphere a certain sophistication, which was reflected in the behavior of the patrons. Jorge, bartender extraordinaire at Horhito’s, told me earlier that night that he preferred working gay nights. “People tip better, smell better and there’s no fights,” he said. He wasn’t kidding–I don’t recall seeing the bouncer leave his seat all night.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’re shopping for a stereo system. You already know it’d be really teenage and shortsighted to assume that bigger speakers are better than smaller ones. Your usage is important, too. For example, some people prefer a clear, crisp sound in a small space while others have to make their warehouse parties boom. Anyway, don’t be too superficial when making selections this week, whether you’re dealing with speakers or people. Be aware that you’re looking for the exceptional—and therefore should ignore broad generalities on principle—and that your needs are quite specific, and can only be met by something or someone just as fine-tuned.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) 595 Linekona Pl. New 2 bedroom & 2 baths, pole house, light & bright ceramic tile. Plenty of parking! JEFF VON SCHMAUDER, R (S) 808-214-4456

I’ve noticed you’ve been smiling a lot lately, Leo. It’s easy when the sun is shining, like you’re a solar cell being charged right up and letting the overflow spill out in generous radiant good cheer. Don’t hold back. Like a solar cell, you’re not all that good at saving this kind of energy for later; it’ll just trickle out unnoticed until virtually nothing’s left. You might as well spend, spend, spend. You’re almost inexhaustible at the moment, so why not? Convert your abundance of personal warmth into karmic good credit. You can’t go wrong with karmic credit—and you can never have too much.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’ve got this week. On the 4th of July Mercury goes retrograde, so getting shit done will not be nearly as easy—especially all that nitpicky little must-do crap that you’ve been sort of putting off. Get it out of the way; it’ll be a lot simpler during the next few days than it will be in the next few weeks, when it’ll take three times as long to complete, if you can complete it at all; you may find that some of it is just plain impossible. I know, that makes this week look kind of lame and crappy, overall. All I can say is: better this week be blah than this month.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Don’t buy crap you don’t need. That’s July’s lesson for you, coming up. Try it if you don’t believe me. You’ll see. This doesn’t mean you can’t be hedonistic or lavish at all. You do need a certain amount of luxury in your life, don’t you? Just keep it to a minimum, especially avoiding impulse purchases, which will pretty much never work out as you hoped. Keep the luxuriousness to a reliable minimum and you’ll have a month of perhaps relatively moderate pleasures—but you’ll enjoy them a lot more because you’re not busy kicking yourself.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Things have been kind of twisted for a while now. Everyone knows that advice, no matter how good, simply can’t get you untangled—and we’ve tried, and tried. But how about a good example? How about someone living her life in a way that—while far from perfect and perhaps even as messed up as yours (but in different ways)—inspires or guides you to unravel your own mess? That might actually work. Keep an eye out for that someone this week, and next.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Take charge. It’s fun, and you’re good at it, even though on principle you tend to avoid too conspicuously taking the leadership role. But sometimes people just need to be told what to do, and at those times they’ll pretty much listen to anyone who acts like she knows what she’s doing. Unfortunately, that over-confident loudmouth is often also an idiot, and steers the poor sheep-folk in totally the wrong direction. Since you do know where you’re going and what everyone ought to be getting up to, not taking charge would almost be an insult, and a crime.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I adore my Capricorn friends. But sometimes I long, desperately, for you to break out of your shells. I see you straining and struggling to shatter your cool, distanced reserve, and usually failing. Hopefully next week’s Full Moon on the 4th can charge you with enough energy to smash your inhibitions, at least temporarily—while retaining enough control to keep from doing anything too embarrassing. What would help you break free (besides, you know, intoxication)? Let me know, and I’ll pass it on: Caeriel@yahoo.com.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I’d forgotten just how enthusiastic you can be; your spark and energy for life rivaled that of those Leos lurking on the opposite side of the zodiac (they’re actually quite like you, in many ways). Why had this slipped my mind? Because, unlike those socially-hungry Lions, you just haven’t been around much. Remedy your absence by reconnecting with those you’d inadvertently distanced yourself from. They won’t hold it against you; charmed by your smile, they’ll let you pick up right where you last left off.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) I have tons of compassion for you Pisces. Most of the Fish I know spend a lot of time being just plain bewildered by life. I think it’s having fewer filters between you and reality, not more, that generates so much confusion. This is why so many Pisceans adopt artificial filters—but your attempts at buffering and softening your world can often generate more gigantic, scarier monsters than you’ve ever had to face before. Be careful, when you’re sipping that cocktail, or knocking back that pill, or nurturing codependence with your partner, that you’re not actually making things worse, in the long run. Perhaps you can keep an eye out for a healthier, more sustainable filter? They exist.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your fans (or would-be fans) are looking high and low for you—but a lot of them are emerging from the social fray empty-handed. This is when they turn to me and wonder: Where the hell are all the Aries? Thus—for your own good as well as ours, since I know how much you enjoy admiration (and despise unsolicited criticism)—I ask you: How does one meet a good Aries? How do we catch your eye? I welcome, especially, interesting tales of how you met people important to you: Caeriel@yahoo.com.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Let’s dispense with inadequate measures, shall we? I’m talking of the kinds of precautions you’re taking that will ultimately do you no good. These are the equivalent of hiding under a desk holding your head during a nuclear explosion. They’re worse than pointless. So decide ahead of time what you can actually do to help or protect yourself, realistically. Do that, then relax. Life’s unpredictable. It’s not safe. Be reasonable and wise; beyond that, why not dance? Living it up, post reasonable precautions, is the way to go this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I know certain artists and writers who seem to have their tongues in the groove. They have this knack for reaching into the ether and snatching something vital straight from the cosmic unconscious. Then they all work with the idea at the same time, without really being aware that they’re riding the same wave until it crashes up on shore and they let everyone see their work. You’re tapped in now, too. Can you feel it? It’s your turn to play cultural shaman and introduce us to the next phase of the new ideas we’ve been percolating all together. What will it be this month, Gemini? Clue us in. CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

She tries it on, like a dress. She decides it doesn’t fit, And starts to take it off. Her skin comes, too. - “Love” by Lola Haskins Nervously, I stood before him, a long table between us, and slowly lifted my shirt. He beckoned for me to come closer. For a moment, he stared at my bare flesh, contemplating me as a carver would a block of intricate sandstone. I flushed under his scrutinizing gaze. At first, I made sure to leave the t-shirt bunched up around my neck, tucking it carefully under the right cup of my bra in a halfhearted attempt at modesty. Shyly, I unzipped my skirt, sliding it a few inches below my navel, holding my breath as I looked back at him. He paid no attention to me. Wordlessly, he slipped on one latex glove, then another, and looked over his array of tools on the small stand next to his chair. I inhaled deeply and removed my top. My skin tingled. He turned to face me again, grabbing my hips and pulling me closer still. Leaning back in his chair, he coolly swabbed, cleaned and meticulously shaved my exposed flesh. And though I stood under bright lamps that warmed my face and neck, I shivered. “Hold still,” he said. Steadying me, he sketched elaborate lines and swirls of purple and red on my torso. I stood there for what seemed like an eternity, listening to the blaring noise and wail of 1980’s hair band love songs from the shop’s overhead stereo speakers. Heaven isn’t too far awaaay… ahhh… Closer to it every daaay… oh-oh… No matter what your friends say, I know we’re gonna find a way—yeah, heaven! I shut my eyes, focusing on the feathery touch of his marker flitting over my skin, his hands gently turning me this way, then that. He was so intent on his creation I could feel the warmth and rhythm of his breathing. I began to meld into the design, imagining myself taking the shape of its jagged waves and turbulent tides. My body began to sway. “I feel dizzy,” I said. He guided me to the table just before I passed out. I came to, in what seemed like mere seconds later, as the piercing blue of his concerned, bemused and peering eyes met mine. “Uh, sorry,” I said, embarrassed. He smiled, looking sideways at me and exhaling the last of his cigarette. “Are you ready?” he asked. He instructed me to lie on my side, with my back towards him and my head resting on the thin leather pillow that I gripped in anticipation. At the initial whir of his gun, my senses quickened. I tensed. “Breathe,” he said. I inhaled deeply, as a slow burning penetrated my skin. The burn quickly turned into a scorching fire, an unyielding pain gliding over my flesh, then disappearing. My mind exploded in quiet panic: What am I doing? Can I handle this? “It’s best if you face the pain head on,” I heard a voice say. And then, it began again. Only this time, it was more intense. My tender skin boiled under the pressure, then teased with fermata. He changed positions, deftly covering my hips with his chest, his fingers splayed against the curve of my waist, digging deeper, stoically following lines up to my breast, engorged with ink and blood, pulsing with determination. At each sustained pause, my entire body shuddered uncontrollably. A different curve now, trailed with care like a shard of glass across the belly of a betraying lover. Another point was flourished with a jarring sting, an abrupt pinching of nerve endings and cells. At last, a disturbing calm enveloped me, as I sank further into the stringent pain, no longer clutching onto any mental vision of relief. I focused only on the sound of buzzing, my body intensely alive, and the vague feeling of fans cooling the flames that surrounded me. There was no fanfare when he finished. The room was now quiet. He simply turned off his instrument, wiped my flesh, removed his gloves and walked away. I lay still for a moment, feeling what could only be the pulsating waves and violently quivering layer of my new skin. A dark and stormy sea where once was soft and uncertain.
