Kill Public Television! Why Congressmen Case, Abercrombie are wrong to support more PBS funding I love PBS Hawai’i. The Public Broadcasting station runs local documentaries and community affairs that you can’t find anywhere else. On PBS as a whole, Frontline provides some of the best investigative reporting anywhere. American Experience recently ran the compelling documentary The Massie Affair, which explored a little known 1931 rape trial of five innocent Hawaiians that ended in murder, racial strife and eventually began moves to make Hawai’i a U.S. state. I love these programs, but for the good of the country, PBS needs to die. Or at least ditch federal money and supervision. On June 23, 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 284-140 to restore $100 million of the $400 million of the PBS budget—money House Republicans had tried to move elsewhere. For PBS Hawai’i, that would have meant a loss of more than $420,000, or roughly 45 percent of its entire budget. In the Honolulu Advertiser the next day, Representative Ed Case (D, Hawai’i) called the vote “obviously a good, solid demonstration” of the American people’s desire to keep PBS as it is. His fellow Hawai’i Democratic congressman Neil Abercrombie said it “affirms the value of our Public Broadcasting System stations.” The Republican effort to redirect funds away from PBS was bizarre. In fact, if Case and Abercrombie really took a look at what PBS is doing these days, they’d advocate that the federal government kill all the non-profit’s funding. Republicans from Richard Nixon to Newt Gingrich have tried to get rid of PBS, and they all failed. But after George W. Bush came to power in 2000, shoving all
sorts of right-wing Christian neo-cons into the federal government, the Republicans got smart. Ranting about a supposed “left-wing bias” that permeates PBS, Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) chairman—and Bush appointee—Kenneth Y. Tomlinson secretly paid conservative activist Fred Mann $14,170 to monitor Bill Moyer’s Now interview progam and report back on its alleged biases. According to The New York Times, Mann was reactionary that he characterized the conservative guest Senator Chuck Hagel (R, Nebraska) as “liberal.” Tomlinson defended his hiring of Mann, saying they were “in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations.” The move is currently under investigation. In any case, Moyers is now off PBS. New programs involve the right-wing Wall St. Journal editorial page and conservative columnist Tucker Carlson—a man whose ideology is even older than his signature bowtie. On the same day Case, Abercrombie and 282 other Representatives voted to restore federal PBS funding, Tomlinson hired former Republican National Committee co-chairwoman Patricia S. Harrison to be the CPB’s new president and chief executive officer. This is what Case and Abercrombie were so desperate to save? Thanks. Now we all get to live with the consequences. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com You were surfing breakwall the other morning, and I’m sure you saw me just before you ran over me with your board. I was a little upset about that, but when your leash wrapped around my arm and you fell off, sending your board flying in the other direction, a little bit of panic set in. I saw that all the flesh on my arm had been pulled towards my wrist into one big black and blue mound. I wondered if my hand still worked. Then I looked up and saw you giving me stinkeye instead of, I don’t know, saying you were sorry. After a surf instructor gave me my board back and helped me push my bruised flesh into place I had to ice my arm for a good half hour. I wonder if you acted the way you did because I was on a boogie board or simply because you’re an asshole. Try sharing the waves for a change.

Can’t Spell ‘Drinking’ Without ‘Ing’
Can Maui afford Ka’anapali 2020? Walking along beach path between the lavish Ka’anapali resorts, it’s hard to miss the immaculately trimmed trees, cut grass and polished statues. Everything is perfectly cleaned and arranged. Even the giant anchor near the Ka’anapali Ali’i is coated with just the appropriate layer of rust. It’s all spotless, until you get to the public beach access path next to the big anchor. That path, which stretches from the beach walk to a tiny free parking lot just off Nohea Kai Dr., is an entirely different story. Rather than smooth concrete, the pavement is bumpy asphalt. It’s covered in leaves and seed pods that break up easily and stick to your slippers. It’s heavily overgrown with trees and has no lights, so it’s got a Sleepy Hollow feel at night. It’s worth noting this rather striking chasm between public and private development because the Ka’anapali Development Corporation (KDC)—which used to be called Amfac—is starting to get serious about its vaunted Ka’anapali 202o project, which will mix public and private development on a considerable scale. Spread before me as I write this is their latest full-color brochure “The Ka’anapali Land Bulletin,” dated June, 2005. Filled with images of rolling coffee fields and happy, engaged citizens as well as plenty of copy on the proposed West Maui Acute Care Hospital, the brochure paints a picture of a comfortable, sublime community that will blend seamlessly with the surround agricultural lands.
“[The KDC has] made some honest efforts to reach out to the community,” said Lucienne de Naie, a slow growth activist with Maui Tomorrow who’s been asked to comment on the upcoming project Environmental Impact Statement. “My input has always been respectfully received, which is very unique.” The Ka’anapali 2020 land area covers an immense 4,325 acres—roughly the size of the entire 10-mile-long Iao Valley. Of course, KDC
That means traffic, and lots of it. The EIS will include a “traffic impact analysis report” and the proposed project boasts all sorts of promises of “trolleys,” bicycle lanes, golf cart paths and other “alternative transportation modes,” but clearly this development will dramatically increase the already choking auto traffic on Honoapi’ilani Highway through Ka’anapali and Lahaina. Water use is another concern. The EIS Notice projects that at build-out, the Ka’anapali 2020
THE KA’ANAPALI 2020 LAND AREA COVERS AN IMMENSE 4,325 ACRES—ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF THE ENTIRE 10-MILE-LONG IAO VALLEY. is only planning on actually building on 1,158.6 acres, but still, it’s a lot of land going under the bulldozer. “The vision… is to create distinct communities that provide options for residents with varying lifestyles and incomes,” notes the KDC’s February, 2005 EIS Preparation Notice. “Using Smart Growth principles, a range of housing types and densities will generally extend outward from community centers.” To its credit, KDC has promised to mix affluent and affordable homes—a truly unique plan indeed. But there will be many, many houses. The Ka’anapali 2020 plan envisions 2,810 units in total, split roughly in half between single-family homes and multi-family dwellings.
development will consume an astonishing 2.3 million gallons of water every day. Considering Maui County is having a hard time hydrating existing customers today, to say nothing of the big Pulelehu and Kapalua Mauka projects already planned for the Westside, the source of all that water is a big question. It’s a question that will have to wait. The whole planning process for Ka’anapali 2020 is a bit behind schedule. The original plan was to submit the EIS Preparation Notice in September, 2002, instead of this February, which is actually what happened. Who knows when the full EIS will come out. In the mean time, KDC will assuredly send us more flowery project brochures to keep us occupied. MTW
Cunning Lingle WHAT GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE SAID ABOUT HER RECENT TRIP TO CHINA AND SOUTH KOREA DURING HER JUN. 22, 2005 TALK STORY WITH LINDA LINGLE RADIO SHOW: “The entire mission was like a political campaign in its pacing…”
WHAT SHE DIDN’T SAY: Yeah, “like” a political campaign. Her communications staff shot photos of Lingle smiling with troops, walking on the Great Wall, glad-handing local Chinese officials, looking interested while being briefed on some new park, signing an agreement with some corporate guy, chatting with the U.S. ambassador and posing for a group shot with all the women leaders from Guandong Province. For someone who’s running for reelection next year against as-yet totally unknown Democratic Party challenger, trips like these provide all sorts of political capital. -Anthony Pignataro

He’s been off the powerful state Land Use Commission for a year now, but that doesn’t mean attorney Lawrence Ing has been taking it easy. “I’ll be jumping up and down this morning,” Ing told the Maui County Liquor Commission at the start of its June 15, 2005 hearing. “[I] have several items on the agenda.” Actually, Ing and his law partner Dave Jorgensen represented six of the 12 establishments appearing before the commission that day. First up was Uptown Food Mart and Car Wash in Wailuku, which wanted more time before its liquor license goes into effect. That was a slam-dunk. But when Lanai Citybased Richard’s Shopping Center came before the commission requesting approval a transfer of capital stock within the company’s owners, Ing had to do a little legal dancing to explain why he had failed to alert the LC within 30 days of the deal. The commission happily complied. Ditto Ray’s Deli and Lounge in Wailuku, which also involved a capital stock transfer. For bonus points, Ing explained how after Sept. 11, 2001, Ray’s had dropped the deli part of its name and focused on being a lounge. But now it was dropping the lounge and going back to being a deli. They approved the transfer. But things got dicey when Bamboo Grill in Lahaina came up to get approval for transferring its liquor license to a new owner. Mainly, Ing had to contend with the announcement that the LC had received a whopping 135 letters of protest—all apparently from the Lahaina Shores Resort, which sits next door to Bamboo. This meant Ing had to walk a delicate line—he’d acted as counsel to Bamboo’s previous owner last year, when the establishment found itself on the bad end of an LC sting. But now Ing had to make the case that the new owners would be running a better operation. “It’s a new concept, new people to work with,” he told the commission. “Give a new person a chance to try for the American dream.” Of course, it helped that the Lahaina Shores and Bamboo had already struck a deal negating all 135 letters of protest. The commission quickly approved the license transfer. Ing got everything he wanted, so he must be doing something right.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22 Well, it looks like the sordid Akaku public access cable tale is coming to an end. Those station board members who want to cut a deal and keep the state legislature at bay solidly outnumber those who oppose the plan to share state funds with schools, according to today’s Maui News. What’s more, the paper reports that an attorney for Everett Dowling— the mega developer who wants to build at Makena that first started this insane fight over Akaku—helped write the fund-sharing deal. This is just like that Downing Street memo thing on how George W. Bush wanted to invade Iraq as early as 2002 that no one wrote about until everyone started talking about it and now everyone’s written about it. By that I mean that Dowling’s involvement in the slow financial dismemberment of Akaku is shocking only to those people who don’t normally watch the news or read magazines or go outside during normal business hours. Dowling has been gunning for Akaku for years. He initiated two bills— one each for the state House and Senate—then offered to help the poor legislators in any way he could. Of course his attorney helped write the settlement agreement. I’d be disappointed in Dowling if that wasn’t the case.
THURSDAY, JUNE 23 I had no idea that sending criminals to jail was becoming so passé on Hawai’i. Sure, we’re still filling up our prisons at an alarming rate, but now—at least where illegal narcotics are concerned—state justice officials want to ratchet up the punishment. On June 21, the state Attorney General’s office filed its fourth “drug nuisance abatement action.” It seeks to
ban Tiffany K. Anderson from her residence in Wailuku. It’s identical to a move back in February to ban 19-year-old Jason Reardon from Ka’anapali Beach. In fact, it’s so identical that Acting Attorney General Lisa Ginoza recycled her own quote from the Reardon action—taking care to substitute “Wailuku” for “Ka’anapali”: “This action sends a message to drug dealers that the sale of drugs in the community will not be tolerated,” she wrote in a press release. “We expect this action to bring some relief to the Wailuku community and its residents.”
Quick, grab your gerbil! Today’s National Take Your Pet to Work Day! I know, this year’s festivities seemed to sneak up on us, but as everyone knows, today’s the day when you’re supposed to pack up Seabiscuit or Rover or whatever it is that you keep around the house for love and companionship and haul it off to the jobsite. No one really knows why we have National Take Your Pet to Work Day—I seriously doubt it was the animals’ idea—but you can count on Governor Linda Lingle to take full advantage of event. Today she appeared in the State Capitol Rotunda with local officials, dignitaries and “cats, dogs and other critters” to sign HB1453, a bill which will finally allow Hawai’i residents to leave trusts for the care of their pets, should the owners, you know, pass on. It’s comforting our esteemed governor and state legislators have finally put aside their partisan differences and come together to support the financial well being of our pets.

Today Maui News reporter Harry Eagar planted a big wet one on the cheeks of Edna Bayliff and Laren Gartner, the two women who opened Cheeseburgers in Paradise in Lahaina back in 1989. Eagar wrote about how the two Orange County, California women created an “instant success story” selling “gooey” cheeseburgers to tourists in Hawai’i, and even quoted Gartner as saying her best advice for other businesswomen is to “never take no for an answer.” Which is ironic, considering that singer/songwriter/insufferable pox on humanity Jimmy Buffett sued the two women in 1997 for trademark infringement—a fact Eagar apparently felt was totally irrelevant to their “success story.” Anyway, the women countered that they had Buffett’s “blessing” when they opened the restaurants, and a judge let them keep the Lahaina joint’s name as it was, but he barred them from ever using the name again. In any case, it sounds to me like someone took no for an answer.

over veterans. Hey, it happens. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, the Veterans Affairs Department says it needs $1 billion immediately or else it can’t pay for vet health care this year. This apparently has our own Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) steamed. “The VA has already been forced to tap into emergency funds for next year as well as vital construction funds,” he told the Advertiser. “Now that we have confirmation that there truly is a problem, we can get to work on it together.” Now look—I don’t feel good about bashing Akaka. He’s probably a very nice guy with a heart of gold. But seriously, does he ever stop with the bullshit? First it was that his sole interest in selling out the Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling was catering to the indigenous people. Uh huh. But now this? war in Iraq and Afghanistan. American men and women are dying pretty much every single day over there. The Bush Administration just asked for another $82 billion to pay for another year of violence and mayhem, yet can’t seem to find a measly single billion to make sure that the survivors who somehow escape that maelstrom get proper health care. That’s called an atrocity, and it’s got to stop. Just because historians can go back to the Bonus Army in the 1930s and say the fed has always screwed over vets doesn’t mean it should continue. Hell, even warmonger Dubya has made clear that he doesn’t give a damn about soldiers once they’re out of uniform—he’s long reneged on the old federal government promise to provide lifetime health care to all World War II and Korean War vets. Where’s Akaka and Senator Daniel Inouye (D, Hawai’i)—an actual WWII vet—on that? Where’s the Democratic Party? Anyone?

Gerardo Flores, 19, was convicted of murder in June in Lufkin, Texas, in the death of the 5-month-old fetus of his girlfriend, Erica Basoria. Flores admitted that he had stood on Basoria’s stomach several times at her request to induce a miscarriage, but Basoria had told authorities that she had also punched herself in the stomach several times. Under Texas law, killing a fetus is a capital offense, and so Flores automatically received a life sentence, but Basoria could not be charged because of her constitutional right to abortion.
In March, Mark Allen Shook, 43, and his dog attempted to flee Mountain Ranch, Calif. Police officers who had come to arrest him on a domestic violence charge. He was finally captured after a chaotic fight during which the dog bit off part of Shook’s ear. And in Eltham, England, in May, a family’s dog, chasing a ball, bumped the ladder on which a man was standing to trim some bushes with a chainsaw, causing him to fall and fatally slice the neck of his wife, who was holding the ladder.
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT British entrepreneur Colin Dowse recently introduced Sprayonmud (about US$14 a quart), which is dirty water chemically treated for greater stickiness, so urban SUV owners can pass themselves off as all-terrain adventurers. And the maker of Doggles (which for several years has sold sunglasses for dogs at about $25) now offers corrective-lens Doggles starting at $75, which veterinary ophthalmologists can prescribe as alternatives to $2,000 lens-replacement surgery, according to a March report by KMGH-TV in Denver.

Five Buddhist monks in Bangkok were defrocked in May after a street fight culminating years of hostility between two temples, according to a Reuters dispatch. Said one (who used brass knuckles), “When an ordinary person is given a middle-finger sign, he will be mad. So will I.” And in May, a 1,500-pound camel named Poon, roaming around his home at the Mayle Farm in Shinnston, W.Va., decided to sit down on top of a woman who was painting a fence. No one could hear her muffled screams, but she managed to call 911 on her cell phone, and help arrived just as Poon had begun to bite her.

Pushing the limits of rhetorical credulity has proved one of the Bush Administration’s most effective tactics. At a time when leftist postmodernists argue against objective truth and rightist antiintellectuals promote proven lies as absolute truths, reality has become marginalized by legitimized frauds. In this twisted post-objective world, White House spinners see every screw-up as a golden opportunity. Not only did he not lose the election, Bush and his media organs drone on, he won a mandate! If WMDs weren’t found in Iraq, it just proves that they were moved to Syria—not that the war was based on lies. The former detainees who claim they were tortured at Gitmo? They “hate America,” says Bush. Besides, they had been “trained in some instances to disassemble [sic]—that means not tell the truth.” So why did the military release anti-American terrorists? They don’t have an answer to that. Purveyors of propaganda, like pushers of narcotics, seal their doom when they start partaking of their own product. The first signs that the Bushies were breaking this cardinal rule appeared earlier this year after demonstrations led Syria to withdraw troops from Lebanon. Kindly ignore the bombs blowing up scores of Iraqis and American occupation troops, the neoconmen demanded, even arguing that coverage of the carnage plays into the hands of the Iraqis—er, terrorists. Events in Lebanon, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan, they declared, vindicated Bush, preemptive attacks, the war on terrorism—everything. “Well, who’s the simpleton now?” crowed conservative columnist Max Boot in the Los Angeles Times as if war were a game. Which it is when you wage it for fun, safely ensconced behind a computer keyboard thousands of miles away from the front lines. Politicians live or die on their sense of what the average voter cares about and suss out their take on any given issue. Republican leaders put a thumb right on the national pulse after 9/11: Americans were willing to do just about anything in the name of fighting terrorism, including going to war against two countries that had little to nothing to do with the attacks. Working up the gay-bashing anti-abortion bigots proved equally potent in 2004. But victory wasn’t the blank check for
which they’d hoped. They lost touch. They believed their own hype. They overreached. People don’t want Social Security to be privatized. Nor will they accept, despite Rumsfeld’s oughta-be-classic channeling of Rudyard Kipling “it’s dangerous to civilize nations,” an endless occupation of Iraq. Failing an increasingly elusive military victory against the Iraqi resistance, the American public is looking for any excuse to cut and run. Revelations of systemic torture of innocent civilian detainees by American troops at Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram provide a perfect reason for immediate withdrawal. There are neither WMDs to find nor hearts and minds to win, so why the hell are we there? It’s American common sense at its finest, but Bush is too self-benumbed to see it. The Pentagon released a report finding that, despite “a consistent, documented policy of respectful handling of the Koran dating back almost two and a half years,” military investigators had confirmed five cases of desecration of Islam’s holy text by American soldiers. But when Bush and his dogs took to the airwaves to bark “Only five! Only five!,” even owners of multiple patriotic car magnets shrugged. An Amnesty International report that called Gitmo the “gulag of our time” and declared the United States the world’s most influential torture state stuck. Even Fox News asked whether the GOP would suffer in the 2006 midterm elections as a result. Standard Bush tactics of blaming the murder and torture of Muslim prisoners on “a few bad apples” like Lynndie England are falling flat. Even people who voted for Bush and supported his wars are changing their minds about torture. What’s going wrong? Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and most Americans know that if the Pentagon confirms five cases of trashing the Koran there are probably hundreds, possibly thousands more cases, unconfirmed by official channels but no less true. Ditto for the torture allegations. How often have you driven faster than the speed limit? What percent of the time did you receive a ticket? How many times have you fudged your taxes? Ever been audited? Now consider this: How often would you get caught if you had the federal government to cover up for you? Americans know that torture is the norm and that Bush approves of it. The more they focus on what that says about America, and thus about them, the more their revulsion will grow. It will take more than the usual poohpooh propaganda to distract them from their growing disgust. MTW

Family Business Jesse & Shawn Richman dominated the Maui Kite Fest
Last weekend’s second annual Maui Kite Fest sported a good turnout, great wind and some very cool action in the air and water. There were many competitors, but two young men were conspicuous. They were the Richman brothers—Jesse, 12 and Shawn, 16. Each performed a few impressive handlepasses, kiteloops and jumps. Despite their ages, they competed in the Men’s Pro Division. They fought all the way to the finals with Jesse beating his brother at first, though in the end Shawn won. “I always look out for him,” says Shawn. “Sometimes I guess I worry too much,” As for Jesse, he sees more practical advantages to kiteboarding with his brother. “Shawn is now 16 and he can drive the car,” he says. “That’s so awesome. Every day we would wait for my dad to get to the beach and home, but now since he has his license it’s ‘Goodbye.’” The two ride together, do tricks together and push each other like all brothers do. “We fight on the beach, we fight at home,” says Shawn. “That’s normal, but we always get on. We’re brothers.” While Jesse names world champions Aaron Hadlow and Robby Naish as his idols, Shawn only has one. “Jesse is my hero,” he says. “He can do anything. He beat me in the Maui Kite Fest when I thought I was gonna beat him. He rises to any great occasion. He can get pretty crazy out there. When he eats it I am like, ‘Oh my god, that hurts’ and I swing by and check out if he’s okay. We talk a lot out there on the water.” At first I thought the elder Shawn first took interest in kiteboarding and got his younger brother to tag along, but in fact it was the other way around. When he was

nine, Jesse got a small trainer kite from his dad’s friend and started to fly it. He really enjoyed it, but at the time Shawn didn’t think much of it, preferring to play video games. “I thought it was stupid,” Shawn says now with a smile. “But one day I broke my arm during scouts. [After I healed] I tried it out and loved it. I got hooked. It was so cool. I had never felt anything like it. And of course Jesse was better than me so I had to get better than him!” They flew that trainer kite for about half a year, then finally went down to the beach to start learning with a real kite and board. Mike Collin, a kiteboarding teacher and family friend, coached them. “At first, we weren’t sure about it,” says Shawn. “For six to eight months we came down to the beach just once a week. Then summer came around and we tried every day. Within three months we were staying up wind, but really we were jumping before we could stay upwind. At the time the boards were bigger than us. We were so small it was funny.” Quite a few people who watched them at the beach told them that they should wait a few years, but the brothers ignored them. In fact, Jesse still remembers his first jump. “I even have a picture of that,” he says. “I just remember sending the kite and thinking, ‘oh my god, I’m in the air.’ I didn’t look at the kite and ate it. I tried again and it went the same, but after a couple of weeks I managed to do the smooth landing.” Today their dad rides with them as well, and they want to teach their mother as well. Even their little sister Eva, who’s just 48 inches tall, wants to get started. “She is eight now and she can fly the trainer kite pretty good,” says Shawn. “We want to get her into the water in a few months. She is pretty small but she really wants to do it. She came and watched us in the contest and now she’s hooked.” MTW

, Because it s the liberals, and not the conservatives, who truly love America Q: How many Republicans does it take to replace a light bulb? A: None. The light bulb doesn,t need to be replaced. It is working just fine, thanks to a $50 billion government contract with Halliburton. Only a pro-dark person would consider asking that question. Your hysteric insinuation that there is a light bulb crisis is the overblown hype of the bulblists. As societies become more democratic and richer all of their bulb problems are solved through the marketplace. Worrying about bulbs is simply done to distract attention from the evildoers. God bless America and the red, white and blue. Why do you hate freedom? 10

he Fourth of July is coming and my patriotism is unflagging. Strangely enough, that’s become a bit of a contradiction—not to mention a cool little double-entendre. See, I’ve always loved the American flag, but over the years I’ve reached the point where I don’t wave it anymore. I can’t. The Stars and Stripes have been all but taken away from me. Flying the flag used to express my simple pride in a nation dedicated to the principles of liberty and justice for all. It used to be a red, white and blue permission slip granting me the freedom to express my sometimes-strident opinions about how we can best live up to those principles. But now displaying the flag communicates something else entirely. Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. What message comes through to you when you see an American flag hanging on a front-yard pole, flapping from a car antenna, stickered to a bumper or pinned to a lapel? Think the person who put it there is against the bombing, invasion and torture the United States has done in Iraq and Afghanistan? Favors sweeping environmental protections? Believes that eliminating
weapons of mass destruction ought to start with those in the U.S. arsenal? Favors guaranteeing basic housing, health care and higher education to all Americans? Opposes capital punishment, prayer in public schools and constitutional amendments that ban desecration of the American flag? Me neither. But that’s what I mean when I fly the flag—or when I used to, anyway, back before left-of-center perspectives were somehow disconnected from the conventional definition of patriotism. More often, those opinions are considered outright unpatriotic—even anti-patriotic. Meantime, the conservative right has wrapped itself in the flag, dyed its viewpoints and policies red, white and blue—and when political battles get intense, splatters anyone who disagrees with the colors of suspicion and treason. How has it come to pass that dissent automatically equals anti-Americanism? Well, see, it hasn’t. Consider the ongoing fight about reproductive rights. The law of the United States guarantees a woman’s right to choose whether she will have a baby. In my mind, this is a freedom worth waving the flag about. But it is the dissenters—those who oppose this law of the land, sometimes to the extremes of harassing pregnant women, bombing medical clinics and shooting doctors—who brand their position with the Star-Spangled Banner. Of course, that’s their right, not to mention a brilliant strategy. But I think it’s time for those of us who dissent on the other side of the conservative agenda to take back the flag—or at least stretch it so that it once again is a symbol of the inclusive right to debate the issues of our time. After all, we’re the ones with history on our side. Some of those dudes with their pictures on our dollars—like George Washington and Ben Franklin, for instance—were outright radicals. Those who protest the actions of our government today are patriotic and brave supporters of the principles upon which this nation was founded. Those who seek to limit dissent, invade personal privacy and control how adults can behave in private go against these principles. Yet they are the ones waving the flag. Some of the United States‚ most prominent symbols of patriotism—the inscription on the Statue of Liberty, the Pledge of Allegiance, the lyrics to “America the Beautiful”—were created by people whose lives were devoted to the kind of political dissent that might be branded unpatriotic today. Consider the following:

The inscription on the Statue of Liberty—“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”—was written in 1883 by Emma Lazarus, a well-known poet who ran with socialists. She openly supported the single-tax program of Henry George. Leading British socialist William Morris was her close friend. Lazarus believed in the American Dream, but she wrote the words on the Statue of Liberty to emphasize that this country should be available to even the most oppressed of the world’s people. Especially to them. Francis Bellamy of Boston wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in 1892, but he was more famous for delivering controversial sermons portraying Jesus Christ as a socialist. The Pledge was part of a magazine campaign to promote the use of U.S. flags in public schools in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. But the Pledge was also a defiant document, asserting the country’s core moral values—“one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”—during an era when capitalism’s individualism begat the greed of the robber barons and the exploitation of the working class. The lyrics to “America the Beautiful” were composed by progressive poet Katharine Lee Bates, a lesbian who had a decades-long, live-in relationship with economist Katharine Coman. Both women were professors at Wellesley College, outside Boston, and both were active in reform movements involving workers’ rights, the inner-city poor and women’s right to vote. The book that presented the lyrics was called America the Beautiful and Other Poems, and those “other poems” included several that excoriated the United States for its imperialistic policies in the Philippines. In that context, the closing words of the poem take on the tone of strong moral resolution: “And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.” Then again, it’s not like left-leaning dissenters of the past half-century haven’t played a part in losing their grip on the flag. During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the occasional desecration of the flag by civil rights activists and anti-war protesters was such a powerful and polarizing technique that the image of flag burning became associated with their causes. The same is true of the anti-globalization protesters of the past 10 years. Even when they color their protests red, white and blue, they usually alter the image. Maybe the stars are replaced by a peace sign. Maybe they are replaced by corporate logos to satirize their charge that the United States

is corporately controlled. One group outfitted the American flag with shopping bag handles. I happen to believe that the right to desecrate the American flag is another of the things that makes it so great—another protected form of free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment—but in the real world it’s not the best way to win the war of public opinion. Its longterm result has been to allow the right to seize the flag as a partisan symbol, giving its candidates an advantage they still enjoy. This strategy has been so successful that lots of leftists—like me— have come to accept it. To reverse that trend, we’ve got to get comfortable with our flag again. In addition to their placards of protest, demonstrators must wave the star spangled banner. Campaigners must use both car bumpers and coat lapels—one side with a sticker or button naming their candidate, the other with the image of the flag. And this Fourth of July, in the name of love and dedication to improving a country that still doesn’t stand behind all that it says it stands for, fly the flag. MTW

A Simple Order

My quest for the imperfect sandwich The other day I was sitting in Mr. Sub in Lahaina eating a perfectly satisfying turkey and bacon sub on a soft wheat roll when I started fantasizing about sitting in a completely different establishment eating a completely different sandwich. I know, it wasn’t healthy. The place I thought of isn’t even on Maui. It’s in a totally unremarkable strip mall shop that operated under a variety of names—all involving the word “deli”—in the years I patronized the joint. It was located in the totally unremarkable bedroom community of Costa Mesa, California. But the deli had a grill that was equally useful for BLTs as monster cheese steaks. The place was small—you ate outside on wobbly plastic chairs next to the parking lot or you took your food to go— and it was all business. You shared no witty banter with the proprietor. If you tried to thank him or talk to him about something other than his golf game or the sandwich you had ordered or were considering ordering, he just stared at you like you were a complete idiot. Oh, and the sandwich I was dreaming of was a thoroughly pedestrian turkey and Swiss on wheat, piled only moderately high with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayo and mustard, then served on a paper plate with a pickle spear and maybe some pasta salad. It wasn’t even the best sandwich I’ve ever had—the bread would get thin and spongy; the onion slices tended to be too thick; on more than one occasion the tomatoes were yellowish. In other words, it was like a million other sandwiches, and yet I ache for it as I write these words.
You see, I love sandwiches. I love everything about sandwiches—the bread, choice of vegetables, cheese (or no cheese—it’s important) and condiments. My favorite insult in the world, told to someone I wish to demean, is simply “Go make me a sandwich.” I also know exactly how I want them prepared. I can’t make a decent one at home—my peanut butter and jelly is about the best I’ve accomplished—which is probably why I put good sandwich-makers on a pedestal. My sandwich needs are simple—sliced bread, razor thin meats and high quality pickles. The rest must be adequate, but those first three criteria make or break sandwiches for me. Ironically, one of the best examples of those sandwiches comes from Dina’s Sandwitch in North Kihei. Dina serves a solid sandwich—it’s even served on the correct kind of paper plate with pickle spear—but the atmosphere’s all wrong. It’s not a sandwich shop at all, but a dive bar that serves sandwiches. For good reason, the beginning and ending of all sandwiches on Maui is Sub Paradise in Kahului. It’s that classic, comfortable sandwich shop that springs up in every American college town that all the activist kids boost to get the rest of the students away from Subway. Their 27 sandwiches—all served on white, wheat or French rolls—are quite good. They make especially good use of both cotto and dry salami as well as pepperoni. All the usual fixins are available and optional. But the place isn’t a deli. You can’t get sandwiches on sliced bread. There’s no cheesesteak or hot dog options. Sandwiches come in plastic baskets, not paper plates. And the people who run it are just too nice. I was in there one afternoon when it was crowded—even more so than usual. This partic-

See? Sub Paradise is too nice! ular afternoon the line seemed to stretch forever. And there was no place to sit, even at the window-fronting counter. A couple came in, ordered their lunch, looked around, stood there awkwardly while the staff apologized for the lack of chairs, then went outside and sat on the curb. When the line finally abated, a staff member
bagged up a couple cookies and walked outside to give them to the couple eating on the curb—a token of apology for forcing them to eat under less than ideal circumstances—but they had just driven away moments before. See? Too nice. My old buddy in Costa Mesa would never have done that, mostly because he made us all eat by the curb anyway. MTW

“Hart” Haymaker Server, Cool Cat Café It’s like a family at Cool Cat’s and it feels really good to have that especially when you are so far away from home. I came to Lahaina in August of 2004 and started working at Cool Cat’s in September. When I first arrived I had to work three jobs but now I work enough and make enough money at the café to only have one job. One job kicks ass. I moved from Ruston, Louisiana to Maui because I love the sun and surf. I had worked as a chef at several restaurants around Ruston and at a ski resort in Colorado but really wanted to be in the front of the house so I could talk with the customers. I had a few serving jobs during college that were not too serious but I wanted to be a server so I applied at Cool Cat’s. It sounds corny but I really believe in Cool Cat’s. Compared to a lot of restaurants they have very high quality food and they treat the customers and the employees really well. It’s a family-owned restaurant so it’s not all about turn and burn. They don’t just want to make as much money as possible but want to make sure that the customers and the employees are happy. Since it’s not corporate there’s no one breathing down your neck and you can do your job your own way. I like that I actually have to work the customers and not just feed as many people as I can. While I work there I want to learn as much as I can from the mangers. I think that if I work hard it will pay off some day when I own my own business. I would like to one day open a restaurant that is closely based on Cool Cat Cafe. The menu is great, the outdoor setting is relaxing and the employees are happy. I could care less about the ‘50s memorabilia, though; it definitely wouldn’t fly in Louisiana. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
The Poetress Friday, 7 p.m. at Maui Baha’i Center [POETRY] Maui and Oahu performance poet and storyteller Vernyce Dannells is a Renaissance woman. Her book of poetry called Temporarily Abated uses “song-stories and call-andresponse tales gathered from around the world.” In the piece “Maui Night,” Dannells writes, “Sometimes when the air is fevered/and breathing seems the only motion in the universe/we know the stars will lose their places/and streak a radiant trajectory to earth.” Marie Murphy Hara called Temporarily Abated, “A courageous assessment of what it means to be alive, female and unwilling to be anyone’s stereotype.” The event is free and Dannells will remain to sign copies. The Maui Baha’i Center is located at 3574 Kekahi Place in Makawao. Call 572-0474 for more info.
Rodeo Daze Friday, 7 p.m. at the Oskie Rice Arena in Makawao [EVENT] Everyone loves a good calf-roping, bronc-busting rodeo, right? Well, most everyone. For animal lovers, rodeos can be dark places, full of animal abuse and neglect. But Maui Humane Society officials say Makawao’s rodeo is a whole different ballgame. For the last 14 years, the Humane Society has been sending observers to the rodeo to make sure handlers were treating the animals well. That means no electric cattle prods, horse tripping, knocking calves over during roping contests and plenty of shade and water for the animals. “They expect us there,” said Aimee Anderson, the Humane Society’s Director of Animal Control. “They know it’s in their best interest to run a cruelty free rodeo.” The festivities start Friday night and extend through Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 572-2076. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Fourth of July
Saturday, 6 p.m. at Whaler’s Village
Monday, 12-5 p.m., Center Courtyard of Whalers Village
[MUSIC] Emil Richards is out of control. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1932, he learned to play the xylophone at a mere 6 years old. Hello, precocious! He hasn’t stopped with the music since. He’s played, recorded, toured, composed, taught and conducted for over 60 years now. According to his biography on www.emilrichards.com, Richards has “recorded over 1350 film scores and counts over 650 artists that he has recorded and performed with.” Wow, like, all at once? I looked through his list of artists—not only is it impressive in quantity, but in quality as well. The list includes The Beach Boys, Nat King Cole, Blondie, Judy Garland, Bjork and The Supremes, and that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. The list of movies and shows Richards has worked on is even more gargantuan and includes all kinds of famous flicks and shows from the 1960s on through to the present. The more recent including Chicago, Spiderman and X-Men. Lucky for us, he seems to like our island quite a bit, as he visits quite often. If you miss him this weekend, check for sit-ins with the jazz band at Pacific’O in Lahaina on Friday and Saturday nights. [HEIDI KING]
[HOLIDAY] Fireworks, Shmireworks. There’s a ton of free and fun stuff for kids to do in Ka’anapali! Activities include arts and crafts, such as the annual Keiki Coloring Contest, visor-making with foam shapes, stickers and stamps and dino puzzles for making mini-dinosaurs. There’ll be inflatable rides on the oceanfront lawn, holiday face painting and carnival games like Bottle Knock, Quarterback Challenge and Bean Bag Bear Toss. Geez, they never had that stuff around when I was growing up. Plus, Feather Duster the Clown will entertain visitors with balloons while Keith Brenton and his Bag o’ Tricks will be working magic along the walkway. Okay, now that sounds a little more familiar… The bigger kids will enjoy the Ka’anapali Classic Car Show, stationed along the Ka’anapali Parkway with more than 60 exotic cars from 1916 to 1960. And the Whaler’s Village stage features the following performances:

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY
Stalemate Spielberg and Cruise taken by aliens “This is E.T. gone bad,” said Tom Cruise of Steven Spielberg’s cinematic adaptation of H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel as scripted by David Koepp (Panic Room) and Josh Friedman. Cruise’s quote certainly applies to Dakota Fanning’s pungent performance here as a negative reversal of Drew Barrymore’s character in E.T. Only there are a lot of other factors that contribute to this film’s inadequacy in the face of impressive sound and special effects that get upstaged by specious situations, a deviating performance by Cruise and collapsing plot points. Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a blue-collar divorced father looking forward to spending a weekend of child custody with his young daughter Rachel (Fanning) and his teenaged son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) in his American flag-lined block of New Jersey row houses. Ray is a gear head who drives a muscle car and has a partially built engine sitting in his kitchen. He’s a guy who thinks he’s a lot smarter than he really is and for the first half-hour Cruise creates a suitably domestic version of a New Jersey dockworker living comfortably inside his skin.
War Of The Worlds
Rated PG-13/117 mins.
Ray is unpretentious toward his disinterested son but dismissive of his daughter’s precocious tendencies that veer toward her mother’s upwardly mobile qualities. Ray’s ex-wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) has traded up for a life in the suburbs with a shiny trophy husband and a brand new SUV. In short, Ray got the better end of the deal and relishes his bachelor lifestyle for all it’s worth. A colossal swirling lightening storm kick starts the film’s combustible inciting incident as a giant three-legged alien spacecraft emerges from the ground beneath an intersection of streets in Ray’s Americana immigrant filled neighborhood. Spielberg tilts toward George Lucas’ idealistic territory of American Graffiti when Ray’s small town USA suffers the sudden alien invasion with a church serving as the initial target. Ray exercises his right wing leanings by collecting his semiautomatic handgun with his children before stealing an SUV to take his kids to the imagined safety of their mother’s palatial suburban home. Somehow Ray is the only person manic enough to continue driving on a highway that is effectively blocked. Ray’s good fortune for driving through barriers continues after a commercial air-

Tom Cruise, abductee liner crashes in front of his ex-wife’s house. Once again the god otherwise known as Steven Spielberg provides a clear path for Ray to exit the disaster. Throughout these tragic episodes, Spielberg retains a hermetic seal on the violence and gore that contradicts the shock ride he guided in Saving Private Ryan. Spielberg’s potent eschewing of a musical score comes to an obvious halt when the director gets around to directly addressing his career’s recurring theme of paternal resolution during a showdown between Ray and Robbie. Robbie has a knee-jerk inclination to team up with the U.S. military to battle against the impossibly strong alien foe. The scene takes place on a hill where Rachel waits by a nearby tree for her father’s return while tanks speed toward the fast approaching aliens. We realize here that not only is Ray an ineffectual father, but that Tom Cruise has broken character from the blue-collar jock in the film’s beginning and morphed into an action movie star. By the time Ray and Rachel seek refuge from the blood-sucking aliens in a dank basement with Tim Robbins as a rifle-packing nutcase named Harlan Ogilvy, the movie devolves into a board game where every plot shift occurs with flashing neon signs. Robbins’ character is so poorly introduced and developed that his scenes come off as a mockery of humor rather than representative of the dark lines his character speaks. War of the Worlds marks a collapse of power for Spielberg and Cruise. It’s the first Cruise film that doesn’t feature his personage on a poster, and it’s a Spielberg spectacle that scrapes where it should ascend. From a sonic and visual standpoint the movie is remarkable, but from a narrative perspective it never engages the audience with either the evil motivations of the aliens or with the moral foundation of their victims. This war of worlds is a deadlock. MTW

MOVIECAPSULES MAUI FILM FESTIVAL’S CANDLELIGHT CINEMA Wednesday July 6 MILLIONS 5 & 7:30 P.M., CASTLE THEATER When challenged with what to do with millions of "dollars" that fall off a train on the eve of the switch over to the Euro in Europe, two young brothers, through a simple act of faith, find their own heaven on earth. An enchanting and heartwarming story of two little boys, faith, miracles... and lots of money. Still, no less a critic than Roger Ebert said it’s got “limitless imagination and surprising joy." PG. 98 min
New This Week REBOUND - (PG) - Comedy - Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys, Big Mama’s House) stars in this new feel-good flick that’s rated PG. How wholesome of him. Lawrence plays a college basketball coach, who apparently is good as a coach, yet somewhat lacking as a human being. He’s kicked out of the college coaching scene and finds himself bannished to the middle school world. Though painfully predictable, the movie features some of my favorite comedians, specifically Megan Mullally (Will & Grace). It’s also got Breckin Meyer (Garfield), Wendy Raquel Robinson (Miss Congeniality) and Horatio Sanz (Saturday Night Live). It should be good for a few laughs and there won’t be much thinking necessary. 87 min. WAR OF THE WORLDS - (PG13) - Science Fiction/Fantasy - Here’s another end-of-the world, everyone is going to die action movie featuring Tom Cruise. This one is based on the classic H.G. Well’s novel that tells about the battle for humankind’s future. Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a working class dude who lives in New Jersey, just trying to support his children. His life is shaken when aliens arrive to destroy Earth and he is forced to protect his children. People are so obsessed with the little green guys invading our planet, what about the people who already live here destroying it!? THE LAND HAS EYES - (NR) - No snarky rhetoric here, just this: “Shamed by her village for being poor and the daughter of a convicted thief, Viki (Sapeta Taito) is inspired and haunted by the Warrior Woman from her island’s mythology. The lush tropical beauty of Rotuma, Fiji contrasts with the stifling conformity of island culture as Viki fights for justice and her freedom.” Well said, Mr. Press Release!
Now Showing ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL IN 3D - (PG) - Action/Adventure, Kids/Family - Here comes another flashy kids flick from the same director responsible for the Spy Kids series. This is about 10-year-old Max who is an imaginative boy, forced to spend a summer alone with only his superhero friends, Shark Boy and Lava Girl. When his crazy summer is over he tells his family and friends all about these two characters but no one believes him. But then the heroes emerge out of space and take little Max along on a mission to save life on their weird planet. And hey, it’s in 3D! BATMAN BEGINS - (PG13) - Action/Adventure, Crime/Gangster - It’s about time a movie explains the emergence of the Dark Knight into a do-gooder for Gotham City! After his parents are murdered, Bruce Wayne fights injustice in the world, returning to Gotham city as Batman. He uses his strength and intelligence to fight off bad guys. Christian Bale plays Batman in yet another installment but this time they got Batman right, including his infamous skintight leather suit. Val Kilmer was a sure-miss as Batman, and George Clooney was too Chanel-looking for the role of this tough, dark hero. BEWITCHED - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance and

Fantasy - Instead of simply making the 1970s TV sitcom Bewitched into a movie, filmmaker Nora Ephron made a movie about making a the 1970s TV sitcom Bewitched into a movie. Except the actress they get to reprise Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha (Nicole Kidman) is actually a witch! Not Nicole Kidman—the actress portrayed by Kidman. That’s hot! Maybe. Also stars Will Farrell as the guy who plays the Darrin role.
Castle Theater, 572-3456 Millions - PG - Wed 5, 7:30
MAUI MALL MEGAPLEX Maui Mall, 249-2222 (Showtimes) = Matinee Cinderella Man - PG13 - Th (1:20, 4:30), 7:40, Fr, M-W (1:30, 4:45), 7:55, Sa-Su (1:30), 4:45, 7:55
CINDERELLA MAN - (PG13) - Drama - Set in New York during the Great Depression era, this tells the story of heavyweight champion James Braddock’s (Russell Crowe) rise to stardom. There aren’t any glass slippers or magic pumpkins in this film but there’s a lot of drama, as Braddock struggles to overcome poverty and provide for his wife (Renee Zellweger) through boxing. Directed by Ron Howard, it’s nice to see Crowe back in some Gladiator-type action in this two-plus hour flick. Scary fact: Ben Affleck was supposed to play Braddock. GEORGE A. ROMERO'S LAND OF THE DEAD (R) - Action/Adventure and Suspense/Horror. An uprising of the dead in the barren wasteland surrounding a tenuously enclosed civilization? Oh, sure. But really, this is just a classic tale of greed, corruption, zombies and really, really bad decisions. Much like what went on in Ohio last September. Stars Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento and John Leguizamo. HERBIE: FULLY LOADED - (G) - Comedy - “Fully Loaded?” That’s what I’ll have to be in order to watch this flick. A comedy/action/adventure/kids/family/Walt Disney movie rated G (no way!), this movie stars Lindsay Lohan, Justin Long, Michael Keaton, Matt Dillon, Brecklen Meyer, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. That’s a pretty solid line-up. I loved Justin Long in Dodgeball and Michael Keaton is one of my all time faves. But, honestly, one-and-a-half hours of Lindsay Lohan being all cute, driving a self-minded Volkswagon bug in Nascar is more than l can stomach. I’m sure children will enjoy it. But for those of us who saw the original, what’s the point?000, let’s all breathe a sign of relief that he didn’t! THE HONEYMOONERS - (PG13) - Comedy - Ralph Kramden and his wife Alice struggle with money despite Ralph’s attempts at get-rich-quick schemes and a motivational speaker tape series. They have some money saved up, so they decide they want to buy a Brooklyn duplex with their best friends, Ed and Trixie. But whoops, Ralph manages to lose their savedup money when he mixes it up with another one of his money-making schemes. Why couldn’t he have left the money alone!? Now he’s lost their money and Alice as well. Ralph is going to fight hard to get his marriage and money back. Hmm... maybe sell more tapes? THE LONGEST YARD - (PG13) - Comedy - This remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds classic stars Adam Sandler and, um, Reynolds again as current and former football star, respectively, who wind up in stir together. They end up putting a team together to play the guards and hilarity ensues. At least, it did back in ’74. Also stars Chris Rock. MADAGASCAR - (PG) - Comedy, Kids/Family and Animation - Ah! Finally a movie with stars we can respect: a lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a pregnant hippo (voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith, respectively). See, the animals were all “residents” of the zoo but when one of them disappears, the other three go looking for him and all four end up getting captured, put in boxes and shipped back to Africa. Only, something happens with the ship and the four wash up on the shores of Madagascar, having to fend for themselves after being “cared for” by humans all their lives. Yeah, I know, it sounds fishy to me, too, but that’s just half of it! Also stars (the voice of) Cedric the Entertainer.
Honeymooners - PG13 - Th (1:05, 3:15, 5:25), 7:35, 9:45, Fr, M-W (4:10), 9:30, Sa-Su 4:10, 9:30 Land Has Eyes - NR - Th-Fr, M-W (1:25, 3:20, 5:15), 7:10, 9:25, Sa-Su (1:25, 3:20), 5:15, 7:10, 9:25 Land of the Dead - R - Th (1, 3:15, 5:30), 7:45, 10, Fr, M-W (1:15, 3:25, 5:35), 7:45, 10, Sa-Su (1:15, 3:25), 5:35, 7:45, 10 Longest Yard - PG13 - Th (1:30, 1:50, 4:20, 4:40), 6:55, 7:20, 9;40, 9:55, Fr, M-W (1:50, 4:40), 7:20, 9:55, Sa-Su (1:50), 4:40, 7:20, 9:55 Madagascar - PG - Th (1, 3:10, 5:20), Fr, M-W (1, 3:10, 5:20), 7:30, 9:50, Sa-Su (1, 3:10), 5:20, 7:30, 9:50 Monster In-Law - PG13 - Th only 7:30, 9:50
Has anyone seen my whistle? MONSTER IN-LAW - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy Okay, hasn’t this story been told already? Charlie Cantilini (Jennifer Lopez) has finally met the man of her dreams (geez, J-Lo, another one??), Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). There's just one problem—his overbearing and controlling mother (Jane Fonda). Also stars the hilariously sassified Wanda Sykes. SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (PG) - Drama - Pants that travel? A sisterhood of pants? I think girls will even be embarrassed to go see a movie with such a lame title. But there you have it; the traveling pants and these pants sure get around! Four friends are out shopping when they find a pair of pants that fit all of them perfectly. Hmmm. Then they decide these pants must be magic, so they buy them and send them to each friend for one week over summer as a way to stay in touch. The movie has a good cast (Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel) and a promising storyline, so if you can get over the title—and I’m sure your boyfriend/husband won’t, so don’t bother—it might be worth seeing. STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH - (PG-13) - Action/Adventure, Science Fiction/Fantasy - The furry and lovable Chewbacca makes his anticipated return to the big screen in the last installment (really!) of the Star Wars trilogy. Get ready to witness the transformation of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) into the evil and deep-voiced man in black, Darth Vader (because, let’s face it, without the voice he would not be cool). The rest of the gang is ready for some action as well, including the bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi (sexy Scottish Ewan McGregor, mmmmm), the Senator Padme Amidala and her insane hair (Natalie Portman) and best of all, Yoda! People go crazy for that little green guy, agreed?… Too bad we all know how this trilogy ends.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT
BY HEIDI KING
Youth Gone Wild The many events of the Arts Education for Children Group Festival School’s out for the summer so you know what that means: lots of kids running rampant in the streets. Mostly, they’ll gather in packs at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, fill the skate park at Paia Youth & Cultural Center and crowd the surf and shore breaks at every beach. But for the past two weeks, the Arts Education for Children Group (AECG) has been practicing musical scores and getting ready for the annual Maui Invitational Band Festival. The AECG started in 1996 when a group of parents decided it was time to address the issue of after-school childcare and arts education on Maui. Since that time they’ve developed after-school arts and cultural enrichment programs for Sacred Hearts School, Pukalani Elementary, Haleakala Waldorf, Emanuel Lutheran, King Kamehameha III and The West Maui Boys and Girls Club. It’s nice to hear of such a productive feat accomplished by local parents. Their arts education philosophy (according to their website, www.aecg.org) is one that embraces the notion that “talent is not inborn.” Clearly, talent can only be developed through exposure to a nurturing and loving environment. This is what AECG offers to every child aged five to 15—an opportunity to explore his or her creative boundaries as well as sharpen cognitive and abstract skills and concepts. Studies since the 1970s have shown that music-arts education does affect a child’s academic skills, particularly in the state-mandated standardized exams and SAT scores. Their first performance takes place on Thursday in the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m. The Maui Community Band kicks off the pre-show festivities under the direction of Lisa Owen. The main event features Maui’s own Uluwehi Guerrero, Oahu’s young cello prodigy Riana Anthony, the popular Zenshin Daiko and Jinpu Kai USA—Kin Lyosho Ryukyu Geino Ken Kyusho Okinawan Dancers. Yeah, try and say that just one time fast. Then on Friday, New Yorker Carl Strommen will conduct his own “Fanfare for a Festival,” which he composed specifically for this event—we’ve got a world premiere here, people. He will by accompanied by the Maui Festival Wind Symphony in the Aloha Pavilion of The Westin Maui Resort & Spa in Ka’anapali at 6:30 p.m.

NEWS
You water signs are nothing if not totally yourselves. You get into the most trouble when you try to conform to other people’s expectations, simply because you’re fluid enough to effortlessly flow into the molds they’ve created for you—temporarily. That same dynamism, however, makes staying within the lines your parents, friends and lovers have drawn practically impossible. Resist assuming the shape or (especially) adopting the timetable someone wants you to take on, because it’ll just lead to confusion, disappointment and strife when you seep, evaporate or expand beyond its borders. Tell them you’re a precocious late bloomer and you need to approach tasks (especially ones this personal) in your own way and time. Be clear: They can accept that, or get out of your way.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Consider this week your early birthday present. With Mercury and Venus snogging in your sign, you’ll attract loads of loving attention, of varying types and intensities, without even trying. It’s not that your actual birthday season will be drab and tedious by comparison; it just might not be quite this special (due to circumstances more than people). So enjoy this time while it lasts. Above all, please don’t play the pleasure-deferring games you can sometimes get mixed up in, because at least some of the current pleasantness is definitely of the now-or-never variety. Grab it, or give it up.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Bees communicate by dancing, and so should Virgos. You talk too much, you think too much, you do too much. I’m not foolhardy enough to advise you to actually chill out and lay around; you’d never do it, unless someone huge (and not ticklish) sat on you and made you do it. I get it. You’ve got too much energy to burn. But give your brain a break, okay? My advice for this week is so simple it’s ridiculous: dance. Dance until your arches fall, your clothes are soaked, and you can’t stop smiling. Doesn’t matter where or how or with whom. Just do it. I guarantee you’ll have a better idea, when you’re finished, of exactly where the honey is.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Some complain that Librans lack stick-to-it-iveness. It’s not that you don’t have the strength or discipline to see something through to its end; it’s that you sometimes don’t care enough to bother. That’s not necessarily a critique; you move on well, and usually for good reasons and to better things. But occasionally you need to stand your ground and stick something out, even if it’s unpleasant, or you’re lured by (supposedly) better things, or even if you believe the venture is doomed. Plant your heels, please. Ignore the carrots and sticks goading you toward new territory. Right here’s where you’re supposed to be, so stay.
A public health message provided by The Maui AIDS Foundation.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You wear intensity like a mink coat on a sultry midsummer afternoon. You wish you could step out of it sometimes, I know, but it’s no use trying; there are just more layers of fur coats under there. The heat, in any case, isn’t external. It’s coming from within, and there’s no off switch. Also, for good or ill, you’re not the only one feeling the burn. You’re just the only one who can’t decide whether or not you want to sweat it out. Whether you desire company in this emotional sauna is your decision. If you do, however, now’s the time to sweeten the deal—start buying ice cream and air conditioners like there’s no tomorrow, and whoever you want to stick around might do just that.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Cut up your metaphorical credit cards. Living in perpetual material debt is one thing, especially because you’ve mostly accumulated it acquiring experiences, not possessions. But spiritual debt is another story, and it’s definitely not healthy to let it build up or stick around long. Before you know it, it’ll be holding you back on so many levels it won’t matter where you go, how much money you spend, or even who you screw. Scary, right? You know what you need to do. Make things right. Remember—this isn’t the kind of debt you simply pay off. It’s the kind of debt you transcend.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Your ruling planet, Saturn, will soon finish crawling out of the watery realm of Cancer into the fiery domain of Leo. The shift will make your life easier and more comfortable in many ways, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. I’m not sure; you may still need the extra goad provided by that Cancer energy to force you to let your feelings show, and go out of your way to express them. Have you truly changed your emotional habits? Unfortunately, most of those involved are unwilling to give you the benefit of the doubt in this arena. This week, humor us: prove it.

COVER STORY
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Some things should stay in the realm of fantasy. Living in a gingerbread house or coating your lover in hot fudge; these are actually more likely to be gross than appealing. Many of your other sexual and emotional desires are equally unappetizing when removed from the fuzzy confines of your imagination. In there, it’s easy to edit certain details out, fast forward through slow or clumsy sections, and linger on the good stuff. Unless you’re on exactly the right drugs, reality doesn’t usually work that way, though. Remember that this week, when the opportunity to actualize a fantasy of yours manifests. Will it translate, or deteriorate? Might it keep better in your head, where you can savor it for years?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Sometimes you want a dog collar to wear, and someone to hold the leash. It’s not because you’re especially kinky (although you are, admit it). You just often long for someone to take care of you, to absolve you of all responsibility. If you’re unlucky enough to be exceptionally good-looking or talented, someone might actually play this role for you—until you’re about 25, at which point they’d probably leave you high and dry with virtually no reallife coping skills and hardly any actual friends. Resist donning the collar this week, or ever again (except for an occasional evening’s bedroom experiment). It’s a harsh truth, but it’s better you accept (and cope with) it sooner, rather than later: you might have allies in this life, but mostly, you’re on your own.
HOODIA GORDONII SUCCULENT DIET PILLS Imagine an organic pill that kills your appetite and fools your brain into believing you are full. www.PureHoodia.com (AAN CAN)
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Stock your freezer with bags and bags of frozen peas. You’ll need them for all the bruises, black eyes and assorted other injuries you’re sure to acquire this month. And that’s good news. Remember, collecting minor wounds is apparently what passes for fun in your world lately, filled with rough and tumble sports, crazy-ass sex, and juvenile horseplay. You can take it. In fact, it’s downright good for you. Considering who you are and what you’re capable of, if you’re not playing rough enough to hurt yourself (just a little) right now, you’re not really living your life.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Maui Recycling Service
Be careful whose fingernails you let scrape across your skin this week. There’s only so many scratches you can blame on the cat, and when the marks run across your back even that excuse doesn’t fly. I hear you telling me: “But I’m not breaking any rules.” Maybe not technically, but I’m guessing there are a few unwritten rules whose lines you’re crossing. Maybe it’s time you expanded beyond those boundaries—it could be that they’re just too limiting. But don’t you think it’d be better to do it on the up-and-up, with everyone’s knowledge (and perhaps, if you’re lucky, blessing)?
If not now, when?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re goofy, quirky, friendly, unique, eminently likable, creative, funny, talkative…and the list of your positive qualities truly goes on and on. But sometimes people—partially because of the above—have trouble taking you seriously. This can extend to imagining a serious relationship with you, or just trusting you with their innermost feelings, or similarly intimate things. Of course, you and I both know you’re up for this kind of heavier stuff as well. It’s not even that those denying you think you’re unworthy. They simply assume you’re uninterested. They’re wrong, of course, but how to show it? Figuring out that dilemma is—you guessed it—this week’s assignment.

The Durannie I was 11 when my mom and I moved to Las Vegas. We lived in a small apartment around the corner from the Liberace museum. And while the first album I ever bought was Journey’s Escape, my next 10 were all Duran Duran. My girlfriends and I spent countless days behind the Burger King fantasizing about specific band members—Simon le Bon 4Ever!—and bragging about which imports we had. We simulated their video choreography, which basically consisted of lots of stiff pouting and offbeat finger-snapping, typed up all the lyrics in computer class, and talked to each other in British accents whenever possible. God I hope no one actually reads this… The Mod When I started junior high, I got into a heavy mod and ska phase. I watched Quadrophenia endlessly, listened to the Jam and the Specials, saw the Untouchables, Roman Holiday and Jo Boxers. I’d wear pillbox hats, long gloves and dresses only from the 1950s. My Grandma especially enjoyed this phase as she used to take me to all the thrift shops in Long Beach when I went to visit. The New Waver I had a great time in Vegas. Even though it’s known for its adult activities, us kids had lots to do and a bevy of underage clubs we would visit every weekend to dance, smoke cloves and hook up. We listened to The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Yaz, Kate Bush, Wolfgang Press and the Smiths. That was when MTV actually played videos. And it was “cool” for teens to be sexually ambiguous. It wasn’t just the girls who wanted to be Madonna, and there were plenty of Robert Smith, Prince and Boy George wannabes to steal our makeup and hair products when we weren’t looking.

The Punk Rocker After I got sick of all the hair spray and morose whining of mamby-pamby new wavers, I shaved my head and started checking out the myriad punk shows in downtown Vegas. I saw GBH, TSOL, DI, DRI, Alien Sex Fiend, the Misfits, the Dickies, Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion and the Vandals. Because I was still such a school nerd, I used my status in the various “clubs” I was in— Science, Math, Ski, Thespian—to gain access to the field trips, where I would sneak off to see more shows and go shopping for those hard-to-find laces for my Doc Martens. I also thought it would be really fun to try out for the cheerleading squad. They didn’t think it was so funny.
The Desert Hippie/Metal Head There weren’t a lot of kids in the desert. It was mainly a place for old people and gay movie stars. But we made the most of it. In Palm Springs, the same kids who were listening to Guns ‘n Roses, Motorhead and Jane’s Addiction, were the same ones going on Grateful Dead tours and selling burritos so they could fund their daily dosage. When the Dead was off tour, we would head up to the abandoned nudist colony. We had a lot of parties there with great hardcore, metal and pre-“prog rock” bands set up on generators. The band that birthed Queens of the Stone Age was one of ‘em. And we used to make fun of those guys. Stupid us. Up until that point, I had managed to avoid drugs and heavy drinking and was an honors student. That is, until my last year of high school. That’s when all hell broke loose. I barely graduated. And I barely got out alive. Samantha Campos thinks it’s creepy to continue referring to herself in the third person to fill this space. MTW

The Goth I was 15 when my mom decided to move us to Palm Springs, California. And I was pissed. By this time, I had had it with all the moving. Just as soon as I’d develop a circle of friends, an identity, a comfortable lifestyle, we’d have to split. It was around this time that I got into Joy Division, Bauhaus, Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Lords of the New Church. I donned the obvious black attire, was obsessed with vampires and witches, wrote morbid poetry and hung out in cemeteries. But I was a good student so my mom didn’t give me too much trouble. On the weekends, I went to L.A. with friends and hung out at a club called Scream. We’d sometimes slip backstage at shows—the Damned, the Cult, Peter Murphy, Love and Rockets, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephilim. Even underage Goth girls get VIP treatment in Hollywood.

We’re weird. We actually LOVE doing taxes. Okay. Not many people can say this, but we at the DK Levin Company actually ENJOY doing tax returns. The forms. The worksheets. All that complex math and figures. It may not make sense, but it’s true. We’d like NOTHING better than to sit down with you and go over your W-2’s and 1099’s and other tax information. Then you can go home and we’ll get down to the fun stuff. Web:
