BETTER KNOW A CANDIDATE

BY GENA GAMMIE GENA@MAUITIME.COM

Bill Medeiros RUNNING FOR: East Maui Councilmember

Development?

CURRENT OCCUPATION: County of Maui Public Works Adviser, West Maui District

I am pro-business because if we are successful in businesses—mainly small businesses—and they produce jobs for people, we have done the right thing.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you? BILL MEDEIROS: First of all, I have the experience. I’ve been appointed to and involved in many community and government organizations, including the Hana Community Association, the Citizens Advisory Council, Hana Community Center Task Force, Boy Scouts, and youth sports in Hana and Central Maui. I have worked extensively with government officials and in public relations. Also, I know the East Maui district very well. Both of my parents are from the Hana and Keanae areas, and I was born in Hana and raised there for most of my life. What is the biggest problem facing your district? The infrastructure on Maui is a big problem—especially the roads and affordable housing. The bypass projects in Paia and in Lahaina are good examples. We need to fix these problems, but it’s not just up to the county because both of those come off of state highways. The county should be encouraging the state legislative team to provide money and projects for traffic on the Westside and in Paia.

three of the top 10 beaches in the world—Flemmings, Hamoa and one other one. But besides the beaches, there still exists that warm aloha spirit that is part of the culture of Maui and Hawai’i. That makes us different—other places in the world have beaches but not the aloha spirit. MTW

Pakalolo? I am against the use of illegal substances. What’s the most difficult thing that has ever happened to you?

One option that we can explore is a mass transit rail system. We can look at projects in other states and counties. Right now, people are concerned that a rail system or other form of mass transit will take away from the pristine look of Maui. With proper landscaping, however, rail systems can almost be hidden and the land underneath is still utilized.

The most difficult thing has to have been when my grandfather and my father, both police officers in Hana, were shot in the same incident. My grandfather died and my father was wounded but survived. What is your favorite thing about Maui? After traveling around the world, especially Europe, in the U.S. Air Force for over three years, I am still convinced that Maui is the most beautiful place in the world. I think we have

Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when I say the word “Superferry.” It presents a good alternative of travel, but how will we accommodate it without the infrastructure in place? How about “George W. Bush?” We need to get back as a nation into concentrating resources on our own economy and people that live in this nation.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Just want to thank the nice people who recently came into the establishment I work at, had their fill and then walked out without paying their tab! Who do you think has to pay for that? Do you think the owner just pays the bill? Or that maybe it’s paid for by some sort of insurance? If you did, then you’re dumber than you looked, you drunk asses, because I had to pay your bill. Any time one of my customers dines and dashes, I—being the server—has to pick up the check. Now I work a lot—five jobs, to be honest—but it’s not so I can get losers like you drunk for free. I work five jobs to pay for my child’s food and our education. What you did is the same as walking into my house, taking my food from my fridge and leaving us to go hungry for a few days. You did teach me one good lesson: from now on, it’s CREDIT CARD TABS ONLY.

I’m no stranger to extreme sports. I’ve ridden overhead waves, my brother’s quad, and once broke my arm launching myself off a hill on my bike (it probably sounds more intense than it was but hey, it was painful). Basically, I’m a sucker for the adrenaline rush. Usually, my attempts at extremism take place on the ground or in the ocean, but when my friend Katie Morgenstern suggested I go up to Polipoli for a tandem paraglide flight with her company Paraflyght, I rallied my courage and accepted. The challenges began early that morning, when I had to get up at 6 a.m. Dragging my sister with me, figuring she’d be good for moral support, we made the trek up Waipoli road. The whole way, my nerves and early morning appetite battled in my stomach. But Polipoli has an incredible view of the entire island, and the mornings are breathtakingly chilly and clear. Katie, the operation’s sunny and easygoing groundwoman, met us up at the landing site and prepped me for the flight. The waiver I had to sign didn’t do much for my nerves, but the instructional video did. “When Dexter says run, run!” it told me. “And keep running until your feet are off the ground, like Fred Flintstone.” Dexter Clearwater is Paraflyght’s owner and operator, as well as the tandem instructor who will help launch me off the mountain. Super friendly, earnest and passionate about paragliding, Clearwater has

been paragliding for 18 years. He exudes a confidence about his sport that puts me at ease. He also has a pet duck named Chuckie the Duckie that he trained to fly alongside him. Paragliding began in the 1980s as an offshoot of hang gliding, its more technically demanding cousin. People have been paragliding at Polipoli for about 15 years, and Clearwater has owned Paraflyght for the last five years. He and Katie are at Polipoli every single morning, seven days a week, 365 days a year. There are about 30 active paragliding pilots on Maui, and some of them are at Polipoli this morning, getting ready to take flight into the rising sun. Clearwater’s students line the road, as bodies and equipment are loaded into his truck for a ride up the mountain to Ferns, the highest spot. We can see them through the trees as they launch, the tiny paragliders winding down over the trees. Clearwater sends his students down first before taking off with his first tandem of the day, an 18-year-old girl. We watch them float down the mountain as we sit at the landing site. While we “parawait” for the first two tandems, Katie tells me that no one’s ever died paragliding at this site, though a girl was paralyzed many years ago, before Clearwater owned the company. “The most common injury, besides broken ankles, is tailbone fractures,” she says as she shows us her harness, a comfy 14-inch thick cradle seat you sit in during flights. “A couple of pilots got stuck in the trees a couple weeks ago, but they’re okay.” The average flight for a tandem with Paraflyght lasts about 15 minutes, but Katie says that some crazies have logged nine and 10 hour flights. I can’t help but wonder what they did when they had to pee. Then the paragliders start making their landings. Most are pretty smooth, but one guy sits down pretty hard on his butt. Finally it’s my turn. Clearwater tells me on our ride up the mountain that Polipoli is one of the most consistent paragliding sites in the world. Because the clouds obscure the view by 11 a.m. most days, paragliding is a morning sport here. In his 18 years of paragliding, Clearwater says he’s never had an accident. I find this very reassuring. At the launch site, called Echos, I’m strapped into a tandem harness in front of Clearwater. The air is completely still, so we wait for a breeze. As my anticipation builds, I wonder if he’s stalling on purpose, just to make my heart pound. Probably not. Then the wind picks up and he calls out, “One, two, three… run!” We run, or at least I try to, and I feel the resistance of the big wing pulling behind us.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Which one’s Chuckie the Duckie?

I do my Fred Flintstone bit, digging my heels into the ground, and then suddenly I’m hanging over the quickly receding ground. Then Clearwater pulls me back in the cocoon-like safety of the harness, and I’m cradled comfortably in the soft snailshaped seat. It’s a bit like the swings at the county fair, but much higher and much, much calmer. Since I don’t have to do anything, my heart slows down as I begin emjoying the view of the whole island. The instructional video had said, “fly like a bird,” and while I know of few birds that hang from giant pillow-like kites, it’s still about as close to actually flying as us humans are probably going to get. We catch some air pockets, cruise back and forth, then approach the landing site. Clearwater skillfully guides us back. We hit the ground running for a surprisingly smooth landing. Paragliding is awesome. That morning at Polipoli, I experienced new sensations, the least of which was a constant need to sneeze in the bright morning sunlight. It’s an expensive sport, but it also provides a unique adrenaline rush, especially when coupled with the total view of Maui it provides. “It’s what I want to do, every day, all day, for the rest of my life,” Clearwater tells me. I can see why. MTW

Old people of the island unite! You have nothing to lose but your drivers’ licenses! Ever since Edwin Tanji wrote the story “When buying liquor, expect to be carded” in the June 4, 2006 Maui News about how the county Department of Liquor Control was really cracking the whip on licensees to get them to card everyone—whether they sport acne or liver spots, it makes no difference—who wants to buy a bottle of beer or glass of Chablis on this rock, Maui’s senior citizens have been in open revolt. “This latest carding game is absolutely ludicrous!” harrumphed the “anonymous” Up Front Lahaina column in the June 21, 2006 Lahaina News. “I stood next to a lady who was refused a bottle of wine by a 17-yearold clerk because she didn’t have her ID. The lady was 80 years old!… [A] word to the Liquor Commission and whomever you report to: grow up! We are not children, and you are not the guardians of our morals.” None of this is new. For years, the LC has been fining restaurants, bars, supermarkets and convenience stores thousands of dollars for not asking to see every single liquor-buying customer’s identification. It’s one of the LC’s rules— Section 08-101-61(b) of the Rules of the Liquor Commission, to be exact: “Licensees are responsible for the checking or for the proper checking of personal identification of those persons seeking admission to, or any person ordering, being furnished, in possession of, or consuming liquor within, the premises where liquor is sold for consumption on the premises; or any person in possession of or seeking to purchase liquor at premises where liquor is sold for consumption off the premises.” Translation: everyone gets carded. Now here’s some good news for all you outraged drinkers of legal age—the LC is overhauling its rules. Sometime this year they’re supposed to hold public hearings on proposed rule changes. So let the LC know how you feel! You can call them at 244-7753, write them at Department of Liquor Control, 2145 Kaohu St., Room 105, Wailuku, HI 96793 or email them at liquor@co.maui.hi.us. I’m sure they’ll love to hear from you. -Anthony Pignataro

Big week for super-developer Everett Dowling and his company. On June 27, the Maui Planning Commission voted 5-2 to approve his plan to build 71 super-condos for the super-rich at Makena (reported asking price: $3 million each). This was despite a revelation last year that the archaeological survey of his property Dowling initially told state and local planning officials to rely on was woefully deficient of ancient Hawaiian sites. But Dowling’s a smart guy—he contracted for a new site with the knowledge that he’d still win in the end. Oh, and Carlyle Group-owned Hawaiian Telcom drops to the bottom on news that five customers just sued the company in U.S. District Court in Honolulu for alleging allowing the National Security Agency to monitor phone calls—a charge the company denies. MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a June 26, 2006 press release announcing that she may veto 28 bills, including HB 3118, the Responsible Business Corporation Act: “While I recognize that the Legislature and many in the community worked hard to pass these measures, it is ultimately my responsibility as Governor to ensure that the bills are legal, constitutional, fiscally sound, and in the best interest of the public.” What she didn’t say: There was absolutely nothing wrong with HB 3118—if you believe that most corporations are anti-democratic organizations run by boards of directors focused solely on maximizing shareholder profit. It’s true that many corporations donate much money to worthy charities and causes. But it’s also true that many corporations have committed serious crimes. In the 1990s, BASF, Exxon, ADM, Pfizer, GE, Unisys, Bristol-Meyers Squibb and Royal Caribbean Cruises paid a combined $575 million in fines for assorted anti-trust, fraud, environmental and bribery violations. This seems like a lot of money, except when you consider the many, many billions of dollars in profits those same corporations made, making the fines mere drops in the revenue buckets. HB 3118 would have established a state “task force” to watch over corporations here as well as provide tax incentives to companies that “consider the public interest in doing business.” Given Lingle’s addiction to corporate Political Action Committee (PAC) campaign contributions, her veto isn’t at all surprising.

WEDNESDAY, June 28 I don’t normally do this, but today I’m going to cheer U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D, Hawai’i). That’s because yesterday he was one of the 34 brave senators who killed the Republican Party’s proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would make burning an American flag a federal offense. What, didn’t you know that people burning American flags is the most pressing and important issue in the land right now? So important that we need to rewrite our constitution? Anyway, the Republicans needed 67 votes to win, but the impending election-nervous GOP could only muster 66 votes to approve this craven sop to the Republican’s caveman constituency. “This objectionable expression is obscene, it is painful, it is unpatriotic,” Inouye said during the debate, according to today’s New York Times. “But I believe Americans gave their lives in many wars to make certain all Americans have a right to express themselves, even those who harbor hateful thoughts.” For those quick to judge Inouye a commie-pinko-lovingliberal, I’d like to point out that he’s also a World War II Medal of Honor winner, which he earned for showing great bravery as he led his men even while being desperately wounded. So there.

THURSDAY, June 29 Okay, listen up folks: just got word from my good buddy U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, 2nd District) that his campaign to unseat U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) is not going so well and he needs money. Lots of money. Oh, and it’s got to happen by tomorrow. That’s the deadline for the latest filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and Case wants to “maximize our contributions on or prior to June 30th,” he said in a statement emailed to supporters yesterday. See, Case is running what us political science types call a “grass roots” campaign. In layman’s terms, this means Case is a long-shot outsider who can’t attract any big

money, so he’s having to scrape up as many small contributions from regular citizens as possible. So far, Case hasn’t been too bad— his most recent FEC report, which he filed April 19 of this year, showed he had about $266,000 in the bank. This sounds like a lot of money, except that Akaka’s filing, which came out at roughly the same time, showed the incumbent senator had a whopping $868,146 on hand. “We will likely be outspent by our opponent, who is supported largely by powerful special interest money not interested in constructive change for our state and country,” wrote Case, who believes the U.S. is right to “stay the course” in Iraq, in his email to supporters. “The question is whether we will nonetheless have sufficient financial resources to get our message to Hawai’i’s voters by election day and to counter the negative campaigning which has already begun and will no doubt accelerate.”

in getting the sponsor right on an upcoming “meet and greet” political luncheon. On June 27, the paper reported that the real estate industry is sponsoring a big shindig for former mayor/current mayoral candidate James “Kimo” Apana. Given Apana’s ironclad ties to local developers, don’t feel bad if that kind of thing makes you queasy. But have no fear! See, according to today’s correction, it’s actually Apana’s campaign that’s throwing the party for the real estate people. Don’t you feel better now?

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Hey, remember earlier this week when I said Case needs your money? Yeah, apparently he needs your support, too. A poll released today that was conducted for the Honolulu Advertiser says 51 percent of likely voters in Hawai’i will vote for Akaka while just 40 percent back Case. Ironically, the poll said Case is more popular on Oahu than the Neighbor Islands, which make up much of Case’s congressional district... In other poll news, Governor Linda Lingle has a 46point lead over Democratic challenger and former state Senator Randall Iwase (as well as a 46-point lead over “Don’t know/Refused to state”) and a 59-point lead over Waianae harbor master and fellow Democratic hopeful William Aila, Jr. (here, “Don’t know” did better than Aila, coming in just 45 points behind Lingle). You know, you pit “Don’t know” against Lingle head to head—you could have a pretty decent race.

walked in. “Did you know there’s a couple people downstairs protesting?” he asked. To which I answered, “Protesting? Protesting me?” “No, not you. The rainforest.” “They’re protesting the rainforest?!” “No, they want people to save the rainforest. They’re standing downstairs, holding a sign and some branches.” “Branches? What branches?” “I don’t know what branches. Why don’t you go down there and ask them? You are a reporter, aren’t you?” So I grabbed my notepad and went downstairs. There I found Roxanne and Amberly, two very earnest Seabury Hall students, standing in the shade by the front gate. They were spending their day not by going to the beach or the mall or by putting more music on their MySpace pages, but by good, honest agitation. In this case they were standing in front of 33 Market Street in Wailuku while holding some large tree branches they “found behind the building” and a crude piece of cardboard on which they scrawled “Save the Rainforests!!! They were here first.” They said they were going to stay there until the rainforests were saved or it got to be 2:30, whichever came first. I was about to point out that the cardboard they were holding could have come from a rainforest, but then I realized that they might counter that my notepad could have come from a rainforest, too, so I wished them luck and left it at that.

TUESDAY, July 4 In case anyone cares, Lingle has $3.17 million in the bank, and she’s already pledged to spend twice that on her campaign. Given her recent poll numbers, I don’t think that’s going to happen.

MONDAY, July 3 So today I was sitting in my office doing something really important that I can’t remember right now when my boss Tommy

Anthony Pignataro wants to save the rainforests, but just doesn’t have the room right now. MTW

OUR GOVERNMENT IN ACTION

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The Federal Communications Commission is proposing to fine the CBS television network and its affiliates $3.3 million fine for airing an “indecent” episode of the drama Without a Trace in December 2005 despite the fact that just two viewers complained out of the estimated 8.2 million who watched the show, according to records that CBS cited in a June filing to the commission. Those two (plus 4,209 complaints from people who apparently only heard about the show) did arrive at the FCC until 12 days after the episode—the same day a family watchdog organization began alerting its members about the show. The same CBS program aired in 2003 with no complaints.

Zimbabwe’s world’s-worst inflation officially reached 1,042 percent in April, with prices doubling every three or four months and unemployment rising to 70 percent. Only the unsophisticated fail to spend any money they have promptly, even though, for example, toilet paper sells for $145,000 a roll (about 69 U.S. cents). According to an April New York Times dispatch, President Robert Mugabe’s remedy is simply to print the trillions of dollars in new money he needs to keep his government workers loyal and to prop up his dictatorship.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT The San Diego firm Allerca Inc. announced in June that it is accepting advance orders (at $5,000 each) for hypoallergenic cats it intends to create by crossbreeding species that lack the noxious bacteria that most cats produce that are so dangerous to asthmatics and others. A competitor, New York’s Transgenic Pets, is after the same result by modifying the actual gene that produces the cat saliva bacteria.

THE MARCH OF SCIENCE Researchers at England’s University of Birmingham announced in May that they had powered a fuel cell by giving chocolate waste to E. coli bacteria, which converted the sugar into hydrogen. The bacteria are also expected to produce precious metals from discarded automobile catalytic converters. And researcher Mayu Yamamoto of Japan’s International Medical Center said her team succeeded in extracting vanilla from cow dung, though she conceded the flavoring could only be commercially used in non-food products like shampoos.

CHUTZPAH! As Congress debates whether to retain the federal estate tax, two advocacy groups released evidence in April that 18 super-rich families—including the owners of Wal-Mart, Gallo wine, Campbell’s soup and the Mars candy company—spent as much as $500 million in the last 10 years through industry and trade associations to urge abolition of the tax, and if their campaign is successful, the families will have saved themselves an estimated $71 billion in taxes, a return of 142 times the investment. Polls show that around 70 percent of Americans favor abolition, even though only one taxpayer in 400 owes any tax.

PUMP DON’ T DUMP IN OUR OCEAN WATERS!

TODAY’S CHRISTIANITY In May, The Times of London reported on Japan’s Shingo Village, which is well known to locals, and practically no one else, as the burial place of Jesus Christ. According to documents written in ancient Japanese, Jesus supposedly moved to Shingo from Jerusalem as a young man, married Miyuko, became a farmer, and died at age 106. But that can’t be true, according to Katherine Jhawarelall, 35, a Hindu woman living in Durban, South Africa. She became certain that she is Jesus Christ after awakening one day in 2004 with a swollen arm containing a miracle-producing stigmata, according to a report in Durban’s Post. MTW

alking into the main office of Hale o Lanakila in Wailuku, I was surprised at how ordinary it seemed. Sitting behind a desk, a pleasant woman with short wavy hair and freckles greeted me. “How can I help you?” she asked. I told her that I was there to meet with Lisa Darcy, the organization’s director. The woman told me that they were expecting me. “I’ll be giving you a tour,” she said, “but I’m going to be reading a script.” As the woman prepared to show me around the Clubhouse, I noticed three people nearby sitting at computers or quietly reading. A few more were outside under a tree smoking. I found it difficult to tell who worked there and who was a member. Telling me her name was Susan, my tour guide read to me in a controlled voice as we walked through the facility. She explained how all members and staff collaborated to create every section of the center. She showed me the clerical unit, employee office, advocacy center and snack shop. “There are a large variety of snacks,” she read to me. “Please feel free to help yourself.” She broke from her script just once to tell me that today they would be having spinach salad and garlic bread. When the tour was done, she led me into the employee office and introduced me to Darcy. I thanked Susan for the tour, and she responded with a shy smile. Hale o Lanakila is Maui’s most unique, comprehensive program for adults struggling with mental illness. It emulates a long running, self-help program in New York City called the Fountain House, where Darcy once worked. The Fountain House is based on the Clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation. A Clubhouse is a place where mentally ill people can go to rebuild their lives. The format of a Clubhouse is revealed in its lingo. Participants are called “members” instead of “patients.” And membership is voluntary, without time limits. It’s an environment that’s all-inclusive, with an atmosphere full of feelings of community and support. The focus is on recovery, where each member’s strengths, abilities and goals are more important than their illness, symptoms or history. Members and staff work together to cultivate the tools necessary for recovery. This distinct approach to rehabilitation has been shown to change people’s lives and gives hope to those families struggling with overwhelming obstacles. We sat down, then Darcy invited everyone else who happened to be in the center at that time into our meeting. I was confused until she explained the organization’s “open door” policy allowing members to be a part of every aspect of the Clubhouse.

A woman named Nina joined us at the table and flashed me a huge grin, appearing happy to be included. While I interviewed Darcy, she continuously involved Nina into our conversation. Darcy began by explaining the name Hale o Lanakila (or The Hale, as Darcy liked to call it) which means “House of Victory.” She told me how all of the members and staff had wanted to work together in naming the club while staying true to the culture of Hawai’i. “When you are involved and you can contribute,” she said, “then you feel like you have ownership, and that is rehabilitation.” Employment is an essential part of the clubhouse philosophy. “Once you have work, everything else makes sense,” was a statement I often heard. Work is a universal component of accomplishment

By Krista Sherer and empowerment. Hale o Lanakila helps each member get back into the community through different work programs. They have the Transitional Employment Program (TEP), Supported Employment (SE), and Independent Employment (IE) programs along with Supported Education for those members who wish to further their education. TEP is a program in which Hale staff trains members for part-time jobs. If a member isn’t able to make his or her shift for some reason, then a Hale staff member will take over. The SE program follows more traditional job placement lines. IE requires the member to do virtually all the work in finding and obtaining a job. The staff is well aware of the challenges members brave each day, so they try to create a relationship

with companies where success is possible. These companies—like Wal-Mart, Maui Quality Cleaners, Café Marc Aurel, the Salvation Army and Alamo— provide a vital service to the members by allowing them to gain the confidence and self-worth that comes from having a job. The general public often underestimates mental illness in the United States. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about one in four adults experience a diagnosable mental disorder every year. That’s about 57.7 million people. One in 17 suffers from serious mental illness and many battle more than one disorder at a time. Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada for people aged 15 to 44. These numbers are higher than those afflicted with cancer. Many people diagnosed with a mental illness also suffer from addictive disorders. In total, 28 to 30 percent of the population suffers from a mental or addictive disorder. When you consider Hawai’i’s Ice epidemic, you start to see why people like Darcy and Hale o Lanakila are so crucial to our community. Darcy is a loquacious woman who is clearly dedicated to the members of Hale o Lanakila. She spoke to me of the recent shift in our culture and how we now think of recovery. “There have been so few resources in the past that people just survived,” she said.” Now we are actually implementing structures that work and that empower people to get better.” I made a comment that this type of thinking was progressive for the mental health community. “It’s actually normal,” said Darcy. “The psychiatric community has gotten away from normal for so many years and things have gotten so over-thought. So we talk about what it looks like when someone is getting sick and we do what it takes as a community to help that person.” We talked about the misconceptions of mental health and the stigma associated with mental illness. Often, feelings of shame lead people to shun help for family members. Mental illness is a condition, just like diabetes, that can be treated. “Recovery is possible,” said Darcy. “And recovery looks different for everyone. People are people before they are an illness.” I asked if I could meet with some of the members and ask them what the Hale did for them. Six members then sat around a table with me. Their stories varied and yet all were woven with threads of inspiration and hope. One by one they told me about their jobs and how they made them feel like a part of society. Ventura, who spoke deliberately, told me about how

he was an advocate for community issues. Every month or so, he and Darcy go to Oahu for the Hawai’i Clubhouse Coalition meetings. “The program has helped me to grow in areas where I did not know how to go about doing it,” he said. “It has fulfilled me by helping me become a coalition representative for the island of Maui.” Others spoke of their housing challenges and the few options available for the disabled. Dylan talked about the confidence and motivation he felt. “I have met astonishing people and I am very glad to be affiliated with the people that I know here,” said Donna, speaking in a thick Queens accent. “It’s also been nice for me to stay with certain things so that my consciousness is active in different ways.” Mark, an eccentric and colorful character, spoke persuasively of the love and support he felt from everyone at Hale o Lanakila. Then he joked about his duty of the day. “Today I have the job of resurrecting my team’s chairs,” by which he meant reupholstering them. “What do you feel the public misunderstands the most about you?” I asked the group at the end of my visit. They all agreed that people thought they were dangerous. Mark teased that because they had an open house “people could see that we’re not walking

around with knives.” Susan, my tour guide, said, “They think we are monsters.” Darcy then asked the group how they all felt when they came to the Clubhouse. Everyone agreed that they felt supported and not judged. “All we really want is to be treated normal,” one member, Patricia, told me a few days after I left the center. “People need to remember I may be a little bit crazy, but I’m not stupid.”

Eating, Drinking and Being Meridional Seven tips for this year’s Kapalua Wine & Food Festival 1. CONGRATULATE THE ORGANIZERS It’s the 25th anniversary of the longestrunning festival of its kind in Hawai’i. This year’s four-day “Silver Salute” food and wine celebration is being held entirely at the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, since the closure of its usual location at the Kapalua Bay Hotel. And there’s a French countryside theme, so break out your scarves and practice saying things like “Chateauneuf du Pape” and “My, this seared foie gras with quail egg and pineapple on brioche is delightful!” 2. CHEF COOKING DEMOS ARE COOL Whether it’s with Julian Serrano of Las Vegas’ Picasso Restaurant at the Bellagio on Friday, Iron Chef Champion Ming Sai on Saturday or Andrew Sutton of the Napa Rose in California on Sunday, you might learn a thing or two in the kitchen. Top chefs you’d normally only see on TV basically show you how to prepare recipes—like Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Butterfish with Wasabi Oil, Soy Syrup and Vegetarian Soba Noodle Sushi—and then you eat it. Oh, and since this is a wine and food festival, each dish gets paired with an appropriate vintage. That’s my kind of education! 3. TRIED AND TRUE IS NOT FOR YOU Most people gravitate towards the wines they know—trés gauche!—but this simply won’t do. “I like to tell people to start at one end and work your way to the other,” says Brian Clancy of JMD Beverages. “Try an obscure French or a wine from Washington you’ve never had before. This event really gives you the ability to expand your palate.” 4. TALK TO STRANGERS With master sommeliers, more than 25 winemakers, top chefs, visiting aristocrats and local celebrities all in the mix, you never know who you’ll fight over that last drop of Cakebread Cellars chardonnay. And don’t pretend to know more than you do—picking the brains of foodies and wine experts from Germany, Spain or Anaheim about their region and varietal is one of the best parts of an event like this for the voracious and open-minded.

5. DRINK LOTS OF WATER There are many wine tasting seminars, like the Silver Salute on Friday featuring three decades of vintages from five noted wineries, the Master Sommelier 103 blind tasting, Kapalua Wine Tour and Que Shiraz? Syrah? on Saturday and the French Finds on Sunday. And of course there’s the Grand Tasting on Friday, a showcase of over 100 vineyards from around the world. But along with the themed tents that include sparkling wines, sommeliers’ choice picks and wines of summertime, there are booths and buckets full of the good stuff that’ll alleviate the very real disaster of a global hangover. 6. BE CAMERA READY From the Welcome Reception on Thursday to the Seafood Festival on Sunday, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival is one big, prestigious gastronomic frenzy. And that means reporters and photographers from high-fallutin’ culinary magazines will be hovering close-by. Do you want to be caught wearing your I’m-about-to-eat-alot-of-food-so-I-want-to-be-comfortable muumuu, mid-bite through a cabernetblackberry braised prime beef short rib? Or smile with teeth stained by your 10 “tasting” glasses of “Terroir de Chablis” Verget? 7. CHEW SLOWLY It’s very French and you’ll taste more. The Seafood Festival on Sunday can be an overwhelming temptation for your tummy, with chefs from Chez Paul, Hali’imaile General Store, Plantation House and many more, showing off their masterpieces. But relax. Unless you’re a journalist or just finishing some weird food cleanse, there’s no need to kill yourself and everyone else in your path trying every morsel placed in front of you. And please, there’s no need to push and shove. Unless that schmuck ahead of you is about to get the last chocolate ding-dong. Then all bets are off. For a complete schedule of events, please visit www.kapaluamaui.com or call 669-2440. MTW

Little Shop of Horrors Friday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 5 p.m. at Iao Theater [STAGE] “Feed me, Seymour! Feeeeed meeeeeee!” A desperate, nerdy young floral assistant cultivates an intriguing plant with a voracious diet—of human blood and flesh. Yummy! I get like that sometimes. But the kid can’t resist the sudden fame and fortune his carnivorous, phyto-diva“Audrey II” provides, even as its hunger grows to global proportions. Now that’s a musical! Jazz hands! It’s also a story that was originally released in 1960 as a dark comedy film that later spawned a softcore porno in 1973 (the 70’s, go figure), a stage musical in ’82 and an updated movie in ’86. Apparently, there’s also an animated TV series and a colorized version of the original film, too. But live and in color is what you’ll get this week, and really, when it comes to R&B singing, man-eating plants and sadistic dentists, isn’t that best? Suitable for all ages. Tickets: $20 adults, $18 seniors and students. Sunday matinee: $15. Get tickets online at www.mauionstage.com or at If the Shoe Fits, 14 N. Market St., Wailuku. For more info, call 242-6969. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Remember My Name!

Behold! Lo-Boy

Thursday-Sunday, 7:30 p.m., Steppingstone Playhouse

Thursday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s

[STAGE] In 1980, the musical Fame was born. It told the tale of the leading pupils in a New York City school of performing arts. Since then, Fame was made into a movie and dramatic TV series, as well as a play performed time and again on stages throughout the world and continuing to present day. Musicals are awesome. It’s how the real world should work. If you have a problem, you sing it out and wind up dancing up a solution. I think I’ll call the President with this idea. Call MAPA at 244-8760. [HEIDI KING]

[HIP-HOP] It wasn’t too difficult to convince me to preview Lo-Boy’s upcoming shows. I believe the conversation went something like this: (Associate Editor): “Would you like to write about LoBoy? They’re two cute girls who perform hip-hop in bikinis. Or you can blah blah blah blah blah art exhibit, blah blah blah blah community blah blah.” (Me): “Um, Lo-Boy sounds good!” I’m not typically interested in hip-hop, but hip-hop performed by two smoking hot, scantily clad local girls? Sure boss, no problem. A visit to the groups website, www.lo-boy.com, confirmed their hotness. It also awoke me to the ambition of this homegrown act, whose two Maui shows (their second is later this month, July 20 at Paradice Bluz) are kicking off their “Clean and Sexy” U.S. Tour. Included are stops at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco and the Palms Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Hmm. Lo-Boy on the loose in San Francisco and Vegas? I wonder if they’ll need a “Press Liaison?” Or “Sweat Towel Engineer?” No? “Green M&M remover?” Just wondering. Call me! [COREY NIELSEN]

DAY

P.S. 69 Next Thursday, July 13, McCoy Studio Theater [COMEDY] Susan Jeremy’s one-woman tour de force, “P.S. 69,” poignantly and hilariously portrays life as an inner city substitute teacher/aspiring stripper. Jeremy plays 24 different characters, seamlessly segueing between streetsmart fourth graders, burnedout public school teachers, and a hopelessly futile exotic dancer. “69” won the Best Comedy award at the Montreal Fringe Festival, and Jeremy has since heard the praises of everyone from The Boston Globe to The Village Voice to President George W. Bush, who somewhat infamously remarked, “Susan Jeremy is a true American. All able-bodied teachers should follow her example and supplement their meager incomes by any means necessary. She’s almost as funny as Larry the Cable Guy!” I’m kidding about Bush, of course. He’d never blaspheme Larry the Cable Guy. But he might appreciate the intelligence and wit of this unique performance. I’m sure you will too. [CN]

Watching Ourselves Richard Linklater pushes the envelope on Philip K. Dick

JULY 6, 2006

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Richard Linklater gives an audacious cinematic adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel about corporate/government surveillance of a public led by their noses with drug addictions similarly fueled and fed by the “system.” Given the novel’s scattershot method of dipping in and out of a reflexive reality occupied by a group of drug addicts and stateemployed wonks, Linklater’s use of rotoscoping (see Waking Life) adds a veneer of narrative information that causes you to further question the identity puzzles presented in the story.

A Scanner Darkly

★★★★★ Rated R/100 mins.

Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is an undercover Los Angeles narcotics cop who wears a “scramble suit” that disguises his identity, even to his employers, behind an ever-shifting amalgam of physical appearances. Arctor himself has become addicted to a drug called “Substance D” and is so far removed from his personal sense of identity that he puts what little faith he has in the hope that the all-seeing scanner will view him clearly. Set seven years in the future the movie immediately submerges you in its comic paranoid atmosphere. A young drug-affected guy, Charles Freck (Rory Cochrane) scratches all over his nude body at real or imagined aphids that attack him. It’s a specific brand of insect dread that William Friedkin’s upcoming thriller Bug explores with accelerating visceral detail. Freck desperately phones his friend Jim Barris (Robert

Downey Jr.) who requests that Freck bring him samples of the aphids in a jar. We can tell by Barris’ wry and distant tone that he’s not a shrink or even much a friend to Freck but he’s the closest person the poor guy can talk to. Freck nervously drives to a diner where he and Barris engage in a superficially lofty conversation about the extent of Freck’s addiction to Substance D (causes “dumbness, despair, desertion and death”) before retiring to a mini-mart to acquire inexpensive ingredients that Barris will magically turn into another mind-altering substance. It’s inside this intimate world of codified self-destruction that Bob Arctor resides in a low-rent Anaheim cul-de-sac with Barris and Ernie Luckman (Woody Harrelson) an equally wobbly addict. The three live a dead-end frathouse existence that mocks society with a pre-disastered sense of skeptical autonomy. The intellectual apathy that the men rely on as their moral imperative for pursuing oblivion is to be savored as when Barris brings a newly purchased bicycle into their house. Acquired from a neighbor, the ostensibly stolen bike’s gear count gets considerable attention as an object of animated debate among Luckman, Arctor and their mutual friend and drug dealer Donna (Winona Ryder). Here, as in other scenes, Linklater embraces Dick’s source material for its inherent humor and let’s the comedy soar. Linklater sticks to the narrative flow of Philip K. Dick’s novel without embellishing it with current sociopolitical realities that the book foreshadowed. In so doing, the director contains the author’s enigmatic work as it pinpoints all-consuming aspects of our modern existence—the pervasive use drugs and surveillance to stifle freedom of thought and action. Wicked Sounds San Francisco’s DJ Garth keeps people dancing San Francisco is a cradle for diversity, openness and counterculture. So it’s no surprise that the City-by-theBay’s nocturnal set dares to push musical boundaries as well.

DJ Garth Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s B-boys laced with soul and finesse bust familiar power moves but to a faster tempo; women in stilettos display footwork reminiscent of a fitter James Brown. Like an orchestra in front of its conductor, each new blend of tunes sends the crowd’s energy to peaks, valleys and eruptions in between. My ears and limbs have never been the same since I was treated to one of San Francisco’s finest—the Wicked Sound System. A self-proclaimed hip-hop head at the time, it was my first all-nighter at the 1015 Folsom club. As the beats progressed, DJ Garth served a sonic soup of dub, acid rock, funk, electro, house, disco classics and everything in between, setting off an aural journey that stirred the eclectic crowd into a rhythmic frenzy. DJ Garth co-founded the Wicked crew in 1991 with fellow DJs Jeno, Markie and Thomas. Fresh from United Kingdom’s acid house explosion, he moved to San Francisco “just to see how it went.” With the weather ripe for outdoor festivities and a musical void ready for the filling, they organized underground fullmoon parties that instantly gathered a following that was to last six years. “It was very raw,” said Garth. “We would find a secluded beach, set up a small sound system and play records all night long. Nobody has done that before.” At its peak, the party topped 3,000 in attendance. The full-moon gatherings, along with events Come Unity, Together and Roots, made this eloquent vinyl maverick

instrumental to San Francisco’s early rave movement. “We threw loads of after-hours,” said Garth. “If we had a basement or a small club, we would quickly shuffle around the chairs, light some candles; put a strobe light on and, voila!” Garth’s popular mixed tapes and live sets lured beat connoisseurs and massive promoters paving the way to 16 years of worldwide bookings. He made the leap to production in 1996 when he released Twenty Minutes of Disco Glory with E.T.I. to significant success. “He is definitely an inspiration to me when it comes to DJing as far as selection and technical abilities,” said Jayvi Velasco, an up-and-coming DJ from the Bay Area. “He frequently would take chances during his sets that took the party to another level. He also put out a lot of groundbreaking music that are still relevant today.” Prior to the release of Twenty Minutes of Disco Glory, the posse launched a whimsical tour in a restored 1947 Greyhound bus that housed a sound rig preaching the Wicked sound to the willing. The party bus inspired the name for Garth’s own label,

Grayhound Recordings, which he founded in 1998. Juggling entrepreneurship, DJ commitments, original production, remixes and compilations became the norm for Garth, while still squeezing in projects such as Om Records’ house classics compilations, San Francisco Sessions Vol. 3 and AIDS benefit CD reBOOT: Notes for the Next Generation. Grayhound now boasts over 50 releases, all from the left coast’s hottest selectors and bedroom producers including Doc Martin, DJ Rasoul and the rest of the Wicked DJs. August 2006 marks the release of this grassroots outfit’s compilation, Unleash the Hound. “It’s basically a snapshot of where we’re at in 2006,” said Garth. “Grayhound is predominantly a vinyl label so with this release on CD, we’re giving something tangible to people who don’t play records, obviously a far broader audience.” Already well-received in Tokyo, Unleash the Hound features production by Nectar, Stranger and Michoacan. As always, it showcases a slew of music at a house tempo. “Electro, dub, jazz, blues, funk, techno, disco,” said Garth. “Anything goes as long as you keep people dancing.” MTW

SHARED HOUSING, ROOMMATES

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I was recently on a plane full of whiners. What a drag: Babies crying uncontrollably, for hours, while nearby adults did the grown-up counterpart, for nearly as long. Some people complain habitually. They’ve forgotten how to simply be content. In the winter they complain it’s too cold. In the summer, naturally, it’s too hot, and there’s something not quite right about—well, everything. I hope that’s not you, Leo. Sometimes your sense of entitlement can get out of hand. Make sure that’s not so this week. Your life is actually pretty great. Please notice.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Don’t be square. You’ve done a good job, especially lately, of overcoming your natural prudishness and tendency to blindly follow rules. That’s good news for this week, because so many delicious opportunities lie just outside the box. The thing to keep in mind, Virgo, is that you really ought to be breaking rules. No one suspects you in the slightest, so you can get away with anything. I don’t expect you to go hog-wild here, Virgo. But it’d be a shame to not at least get away with something, wouldn’t it? Your prince(ss) in shining armor won’t come galloping up on a magnificent white stallion to rescue you from your problems. You know this. So why do you think s/he might get dragged in, unconscious, by the trawling nets you’ve cast into the ocean in all directions? I like the idea of you being proactive, but think about what or who you’re trying to draw into your life. If they’re stupid or desperate enough to fall for the kinds of weak efforts you’ve recently put forth, they’re not going to impress you in the long run. The “prey” you seek is exceptional. Your methods ought to be, too.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Scorpios don’t take much downtime. But you usually poop out around now, when opportunities to indulge your whims and wiles are more available than at any other time of year. Something about the summer heat drags you down. In this case, your internal rhythms are ever so slightly out of whack. Dig deep and find a second (or third, or fourth) wind and run with what’s happening. Watch carefully; the frenzy of potential fun and intensity will ebb in a few weeks. Postpone your coma nap until then.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) When you’re finally left alone to do your own thing, you’re kind of sad. Well, now you’ve got what you said you wanted: freedom to pursue your goals without interference. Well? What are you waiting for? No one’s standing in your way. In fact, most of the people you know are as far away as they can get. You’re free. What? Maybe that’s not exactly what you wanted? Maybe it’s no fun getting where you’re going if there’s no one to accompany you, or at least watch. If you feel you must push people away this week, be careful about how hard you shove. They may go further than you wish, and retrieving them from there’ll be a bitch.

Some bats screw during hibernation season. When a male awakens he helps himself to various comatose females before he settles back in to sleep the rest of the winter. So it’s the lot of the lady bat to go to sleep a virgin and wake up pregnant. Similarly, minor crimes against you are likely to be perpetrated while you’re not paying attention. Don’t focus on revenge, though. It won’t work. Instead, don’t let these wrongs become bigger ones by damaging you forever. Do your best to move on.

If there was ever a time that was well-suited to forthright directness, it’s now. Just spill it. Be boldly honest, even if it makes you sound a little assholic. If it’s real, it’ll work out. I know it flies in the face of your overly-cautious instincts. Your self-editing mechanisms will resent being turned off. But there are some things that tact and diplomacy just can’t accomplish. When you need to get some important shit done, you’ve got to speak from the heart, the gut, even the crotch—anywhere but your hyper-analytical head.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I don’t think you’re naturally masochistic, but sometimes you put yourself in situations where you simply collect rejections like candy on Halloween. You know, rationally, that your methods aren’t likely to yield success, yet you insist on plugging away with them, anyway. Take a step back. Putting your nose to the grindstone may eventually get you somewhere. But there’s an easier way, one which involves a much more selective and thoughtful application of your energies. Use that brilliant mind of yours to stop punishing yourself and start getting somewhere, instead.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) The beaten path ain’t for you. Even when you try to follow it, you end up tripping and falling off a cliff. Your route is not the one that’s tried-and-true. For better or worse, you’ve got to forge your own unique way to your destination. This is hopeful, though, not a cause for despair. You suck at following others’ footsteps. Doing things “the way they’re always done,” just isn’t the right way for you, no matter what people tell you. So if you’re on the 10-lane highway, get off it now. Start bushwhacking. It’ll feel right in a way the interstate never did—you’ll see.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

www.mauitime.com

Some seeds only sprout after a hard frost, or a forest fire. Sometimes a struggle is just what you need. Without it, you’re never pushed to crack open the resources or parts of yourself capable of greatness. This is why you always put yourself into challenging situations; it’s your route to personal evolution. However, don’t take this as a mandate to keep doing things exactly the same (difficult) way. Hopefully, this week should present you with a new contest. If it doesn’t, figure out why.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

DROP OFF 33 N. Market St., Ste. 201, Wailuku

Your eyes are tired. Your vision is swimming. Is it really the best time to be reading your horoscope? What can you possibly get out of it—or anything—in this state? Go get some rest, then think about what needs to be done. Contemplating it now will just exhaust you needlessly, especially because it’ll cost you much needed, spiritually-replenishing sleep. Turn off your phone, television and computer, and go lie down. I’m not suggesting you sleep this week away, by any means. You really do have too much to do to get away with that. But maybe you can spare an afternoon?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) The reason you have such a wishy-washy reputation is because you’re vocal. In reality, Pisceans, for example, are far more indecisive than you. But they have this tricky way of never verbally committing to an opinion or a course of action. You have no problem formulating and expressing your opinion—it just mutates often. And because you’re vocal, people know about your frequent changes of heart. So my tip for you this week is: shut up. Wait until you’re sure before you speak up—and even then, wait until you’re asked. I get a million—sometimes two—invitations for this lecture on tantric goddess empowerment and that workshop on raw food penile enhancement all the time. But when I saw the press release for “Sexual Chemistry: What Actually Works” in my box, I knew I had to go. And as with most things sexually related, I had a couple drinks and brought along some friends. No, I kid. But I did bring Sasha. And we might’ve lubed up first—with alcoholic beverages, people—at the Kahului Ale House, where we were two of, like, four chicks that I’m sure any one of the several hundred sausage farmers there would’ve loved to instruct in their own knucklehead course of Sex Chem lab. But I digress. I’m not sure what I was expecting at the “two-hour interactive program exploring state-of-the-art practical aspects” of lé mixing your peanut butter with my jelly, so to speak. But when Dr. Todd Michael began his discourse with a reference to What the Bleep—“the more we study the universe, the more we run into a wall of mystery”—about the chemistry between people and what we can do to avoid “mistakes” (ahem—musicians, DJ’s, writers, et al.), I quickly whipped out my notepad and began scribbling. But what he said next left me aghast. “Women need to balance their hormones,” he said. “It’s so easily corrected. And it’s SO MUCH FUN!” Uh, where’s the sex part? “Fatigue is the worst thing for sexual chemistry,” Dr. Todd continued. “Stress, depression, insomnia all stem from low progesterone, high estrogen levels. Progesterone makes women feel good, have longer orgasms, etc. Estrogen decreases sex drive.” The horror, I moaned! Get it? Hor-mone? Anyway, he went on to say that the environment is flooded with estrogen. That it’s in the plastic packaging of our foods, in the Teflons of our cooking pans, insecticides—and here’s where it gets scary—caffeine, tap water, detergents, dry cleaning, hot computers and solvents of any kind. Excuse me—did he say caffeine? This is my worst nightmare. The excess of estrogen, or xenoestrogens, polluting our environment may be contributing to a younger puberty, or why girls are now having their periods at age nine. It can also contribute to heavy periods, severe cramps, breast tenderness, weight gain and hair loss. Estrogen makes cells divide more rapidly, which leads to accelerated aging, anxiety and panic attacks. I think I’m panicking right now. But there is hope. Dr. Todd said there are natural foods—like cauliflower, broccoli, cherries, rosemary and turmeric—that will block xenoestrogens. And that by choosing a plant-based diet, reducing sugar and caffeine (gasp!), increasing fiber and hormonefree, organic stuff, you can weaken the ravaging effects of estrogen overdose. Fortunately, from there we moved on to sexier topics: Natural aphrodisiacs do indeed exist! Yippee! Maca seems to be the most potent, according to the good doctor and the room full of knowingly nodding partakers. It’s a root from Peru that’s been clinically proven to increase sperm count, stamina, strength, energy and good old-fashioned desire. Can I get a hallelujah? There’s also something called Epimedium or Yin Yang Huo that Dr. Todd was embarrassed to say is commonly referred to as “Horny Goat Weed.” It’s fairly popular in traditional Chinese medicine, used to reduce fatigue and menopausal discomfort, as well as boost erectile function and “restore sexual fire.” Damiana, a small shrub found in Mexico, South America, Texas and the West Indies, is another one. Although Dr. Todd said its effect is low to medium, damiana is thought to reduce blood sugar, calm nerves, relieve depression and increase libido. But other than that, Dr. Todd said the aphrodisiac industry is mostly a sham. The room was quiet for a moment. Then a guy in the third row raised his hand. “Isn’t cacao a natural aphrodisiac?” he asked. “Yes, that’s right,” said Dr. Todd. “Well, but… doesn’t it have caffeine in it?” “Yes. But in that case, you’ve got to take the good with the bad, and the benefits of cacao far outweigh the detriments.” Oh, phew! And so, my friends, chocolate is saved. And thankfully, so is my sex life, as well as the life of one caffeine-killing Dr. Todd.
