LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR BLAME THE VOTERS, NOT US To list Nikhilananda as “Activist of the Year” is one of the more absurd things I have seen in this newspaper [Best of Maui, July 13, 2006]. You have a great newspaper, but this is ridiculous. On substantive issues— affordable housing, Superferry, cruise ships, invasive species, stopping airport expansion, lawsuits against outof-control development, growth boundaries... where has he been? If I were to name the top 20 environmentalists, Nick would not be on the list: Ed Lindsay, Rene Sylva, Robin Newbold, Hannah Bernard, Lucienne de Naie, Richard and Judith Michaels, Kapua Sproat, Ron Sturtz, Maile Luuwai, Art Medeiros, Scott Crawford, John & Tweety Lind. Nick’s a good guy. Get to know the real heroes of the island, please. -Mark Sheehan, Haiku
ANOTHER DOWLING FAN According to a recent Maui Planning Commission vote, uber-developer Everett Dowling is getting his superrich gated development approved in Makena area of South Maui, sacred places notwithstanding [The Maui 10, July 6, 2006]. Surprise, surprise! This is the same Dowling who was named “Maui’s Influence Peddler of the Year” in 2005 along with his Building Imbalance Gang—aka, Dowling B.I.G. For those tracking inequity and corruption, the latest gated Makena deal is just another piece of their cake. Ever since local voices started to be heard in Maui on live TV, Dowling’s gang has been trying to tear down Akaku: Maui Community TV. Dowling B.I.G. wants to build a fence around local voices and ensure only gated communications are heard. There is profit to be made building imbalance. That’s why the same special interests are attacking Akaku,
Spaying and neutering your pet helps them live longer, healthier lives.
paying mercenaries to hijack the free speech of Maui’s local people. Shame on Dowling B.I.G. and the corrupt State officials who do their bidding. Now that Makena is being gated, it’s time to audit Time Warner, shine some light on the State’s cable TV regulator, and clean up the mess they’ve made of Maui’s gem, Akaku! Free speech should be free—not gated by private interests nor state controlled. -Sean McLaughlin, former Akaku president and CEO, Honolulu

CASE AGAINST CASE A friend pointed me to your item about Mazie Hirono [Coconut Wireless, June 22, 2006]. Then I proceeded to scan your other articles. The one about your Congressman Ed Case voting yes on House Resolution 861 caught my eye. In short, he voted to “Stay the Course.” In joining the bandwagon cheering on the administration, Case sent a loud message that he does not believe in a full and open debate on Iraq on the House Floor, operating on Open Rules where all alternatives to the failed ”stay the course” policy can be offered and debated. HR 543, a Discharge Petition filed by Congressman Abercrombie calls for exactly that. By this yes vote on 861, he demonstrated where his real allegiance is—and it’s NOT with the troops, their suffering families, the dead, the wounded and their families and it’s definitely not with looking for real solutions in bringing peace in Iraq and change at home. Peace. -JBK, via email

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said at Republican Jerry Coffee’s July 11 press conference announcing his intention to run for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Daniel Akaka, according to the July 12 Honolulu Star-Bulletin: “I am a big supporter of Jerry Coffee. I think he is a terrific candidate and will make it a very exciting race.”
What she didn’t say: It certainly is ironic that Akaka Bill-fan Lingle just loves Jerry Coffee, a 72-year-old Midweek columnist and former Vietnam War POW who has long denounced Akaka’s Native Hawaiian Recognition Act as “race-based and unconstitutional.” While it’s entirely possible that Coffee’s correct, his opposition to the bill—and Native Hawaiian activism in general—can be quite vicious. In a May 3, 2006 Midweek column, Coffee referenced unnamed “Hawaiian activists who denounce anything ‘American’ (except for the U.S. government handouts) and would rather live “sovereign” in the dark ages of tribalism… as provided by the Akaka Bill.” Sounds like a future senator to me! -Anthony Pignataro

Delaying the Delay
RUNNING FOR: U.S. Senate
Homelands Homeownership Act of 2000, and give those people the land, fee simple. The Act can be seen as non-ethnic because it is based on an actual law. We don’t need a government agency that sucks up a lot of money in itself. Also, they can participate in the welfare system like everyone else, regardless of race.
CURRENT OCCUPATION: Attorney, owns Everything Tailor, a custom suit company with production in Vietnam MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you?
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of healthcare?
MARK BEATTY: There are three areas I am focused on: education, security (specifically, against illegal drugs) and pro-business efficiency. Dan Akaka, my main competition, ran as the great educator, but he has pretty much done nothing. We’re held passive to a monopoly that’s run by union bosses and a Democratic Party monopoly. Also, Akaka has been voted one of the most anti-business senators. For example, because of the Jones Act [which mandates U.S.-flagged vessels in interisland waters], a lot of trade just doesn’t happen here in Hawai’i.
victory is so close in Iraq. Think about it, five years ago, who would want to go to Iraq for vacation? Maybe in five years, people will.
What do you think about George W. Bush?
What is the biggest issue facing the United States?
I’m fairly positive toward George Bush.
I would say security, but I don’t think terrorists are the biggest security risks. It’s the illegal drug trade. After 9/11 I was called for a year of active duty—I’m in my 17th year in the Army Reserves—on a homeland security mission, and I found that there are all these agencies that aren’t working together.
Big government and low quality services. That’s what’s coming to my mind. Sorry I’m so negative. I guess I have trauma in my background coming out. Marijuana? Wasted lives. Labor? I think of human value and union monopoly. One’s positive, and one’s negative. Education? Fun. As in, math is fun.
What is your favorite thing about him? He makes decisions based on what he thinks is the best thing to do. Look at the Iraq war. Public opinion is down, and then there are a few victories and public opinion goes up. You can’t run public policy based on a fickle public opinion. In fact, it will probably go up pretty soon. I’ve talked to a lot of people that have been involved on both sides of the Vietnam War. The communists were one week away from giving up when we pulled out. That’s sticking in my mind—
What do you think is the best way to approach Hawaiian sovereignty?
If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be?
No, I want you to answer it.
No, who would you meet?
Well, first of all I would direct you to some of the articles I have written on my website [electmarkbeatty.com]. I think what we should do is modify the Hawaiian

You watch enough Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearings, and you start thinking you can anticipate how each member will act. It’s a delusion, of course—just because you pay attention to what’s being said, it doesn’t mean the members do. Case in point was the Alii Nui Charters matter that came up during the July 6, 2006 hearing. Up on two counts related to alleged over-service, the case was delayed from the Dec. 1, 2005 hearing when company attorney Richard Lesser mumbled something about confusion involving a possible plea agreement and asked for another delay. Normally the prosecution recoils at such requests, but today Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas told the board he had no problem with delaying the case because he had long ago told his potential witnesses they didn’t need to show. If the board went ahead with Lesser pleading not guilty, Temas would be in trouble. “The State is at a disadvantage,” he told the board. Okay, I thought, done deal. The board has sternly lectured defense attorneys before when they asked for delays, but rarely denies a delay request from the prosecution. But then acting chairwoman Marilyn Chapman asked for a vote approving the delay. It failed. Stunned, I listened to board members Donald Fujii and M.D. Alborano—both solid supporters of the department—talk about the horrors of “wasting the board’s time” and how it was best to “settle it today.” Finally Temas could take no more, and reiterated his earlier point. “Minutes before I arrived here I got a telephone call,” he said, explaining how Lesser’s delay request came at the last second and that if they proceeded, he would have to try the case without the police officer and LC officer witnesses he needed. “How can I now fairly present my case before the board?” he asked. It was as if a light was switched on in Fujii’s and Alborano’s heads. They smiled and even apologized to Temas. Minutes later they voted for the delay, and returned balance to the LC universe. -Anthony Pignataro

Tesoro drops a notch this week on news, reported in the July 13 Honolulu Advertiser, that the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers are throwing a fit over the state’s recent decision to waive volatility standards for the gasoline refiner’s ethanol fuel. It’s shocking, but the automaker groups are concerned that with lower standards, Tesoro could produce low-grade ethanol that would cause “driveability problems.” Bad news, certainly, but there’s good news for A&B: its subsidiary Matson Navigation just got the keys to a brand-new containership, the MV Maunalei! In fact, that ship is so good that Matson President James Andrasick told the Advertiser that ships like these give the company the confidence “to enter China, the most significant and largest export market in the world.” You mean we can get even more cheap imports from China now and drive up our trade deficit even further? ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to all you completely obvious, disrespectful, peeking perverts! While I’m sure it’s hard for any man not to look at a goddess’ body, there’s a difference between respectful spectators and disrespectful ones. For instance, recently I was in the health food store and this guy indecently stared at my entire body from toe to head, silently whistling and nodding his head in perverted approval while I stared right back at him with hatred and disgust, then boldly told him to stop looking at me. Or how about you, the old man with the big black shades—only a few days ago, you followed my every footstep when I went down to Hamoa beach. Didn’t you see me looking freaked out by your ill manners? Oh, but wait, there’s the old surfer out at the Breakwall who took a few too many minutes staring at me, but then turned around just in time to see a perfect wave coming and you took it. Of course you wouldn’t have the decency to realize that the wave came perfectly to me. Did you think you were impressing me with your donkey skills? Just because we live in a tropical climate where women don’t wear turtlenecks all the time doesn’t mean we’re begging to be stared at. Don’t ever expect to find a respectful woman when you rape them with your eyes! Guys, how about finally getting a hint and waking up from your sexual fantasy when you see me giving you stink-eye or yelling at you!! Or does that just add to your disgusting fantasy? Give respect and you’ll get respect! Please live consciously! Aloha.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, July 12 After a marathon session that ended early, early this morning, Maui County Council Chairman G. Riki Hokama seemed to be leading his colleagues to the unthinkable decision that the county should join a lawsuit by three Maui environmental organizations against the state’s Department of Transportation. The grounds are simple and well known: the state refuses to require Superferry, Inc. to do a full environmental review of the plan to run high-speed car ferries between the islands even though it will require massive construction work at Kahului Harbor. For all his bravery and hardedged realism on the lawsuit idea, Hokama did display a certain naiveté during the hearing when he asked why preeminent Superferry backer Governor Linda Lingle—ostensibly a supporter of “home rule”—had forsaken her beloved Maui. This shocks you Riki? Really? See, Lingle’s a state politician instead of merely a county one, and that means she reserves the right to completely reverse herself on long-held “home rule” principles if expediency demands it.
THURSDAY, July 13 Today political neophyte Angus McKelvey, who’s running for the state House of Representative’s 10th District against Democrat incumbent Kam Tanaka and former Maui Republican Party chairwoman Kay Ghean, wrote a letter to Her Majesty Governor Lingle pleading for her to “declare a state of emergency for West Maui because the traffic situation has reached the point of disaster.” McKelvey told the governor that West Maui needs more bypass roads now or risks a major drop-off in tourism. “To put a personal spin on this impact, I have had some West Maui hotel managers tell me that for the first time in twenty years visitors have directly told them that they will not return to the island again because of the traffic,” he
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
wrote. McKelvey’s right, but he’s only got half the story. The state has been ridiculously slow in building highways in West Maui, but the Maui County Council has also been trigger-happy in approving massive residential and hotel expansion throughout the region. And it’s just going to get worse. “A Kaanapali Development Corp. executive laid out plans Wednesday night for 4,850 new housing units on the company’s West Maui lands,” reported The Maui News today. Yeah, that’ll make things better
COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
FRIDAY, July 14 Looks like we’re going to have to wait on that plan to get the County of Maui to sue the state over the Superferry, says today’s Maui News. Seems the whole matter hasn’t been “noticed properly” and any action taken would violate the state’s open meetings law. Over-development, insanely high home prices and toothless resolutions— those things we can have now, but looks like we’re just going to have to wait for county officials to start their war against the Superferry.
SATURDAY, July 15 It also doesn’t look like we—or anyone else in the U.S.—will get to the bottom of that whole deal where the National Security Agency apparently got secret phone records from a bunch of phone companies. State legislators tried to hold an “informational briefing” on Wednesday to get some answers, but no one wants to cooperate. According to an Associated Press story published today, State Attorney General Mark Bennett refuses to subpoena any phone companies, even though New Jersey officials are doing exactly that. The phone companies— including Carlyle Group’s Hawaiian Telcom—are denying they gave any records to the NSA. None of this is surprising—when was the last time you got a straight answer from the phone company?
SUNDAY, July 16 Which came first—the traffic or the headache?
MONDAY, July 17 With barely a week left before the filing deadline (July 25), political junkies are still asking Big Island Mayor Harry Kim— who is a Republican—if he will please, Please, PLEASE run on the Democratic ticket against Governor Lingle. This is not so far-fetched: Kim is popular, moderate and reasonable. What’s more, he’s got statewide recognition—an advantage sorely lacking in both Lingle’s current Democratic challengers, former state Senator Randall Iwase and Oahu harbor-
master William Aila. Then again, Kim’s not exactly been decisive on the run-forgovernor question. Lingle already has $3 million in her campaign bank account, and has said she’d spend double that to hold onto her job. If Kim wants to run against that, more power to him, but it ain’t gonna be easy.
TUESDAY, July 18 There are 10 people running for Case’s 2nd District Congressional seat, but the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on July 14 strongly suggest the pack is already narrowing to just two. In terms of cash on hand, Democrat/former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono is way out front with a little more than $335,000, while Republican/former State Representative Quentin Kawananakoa—his platform mirrors the Bush Administration’s talking points—is running a distant second with nearly $177,000. The reports show he’s loaned himself $250,000 and already started pouring tens of thousands of dollars into high-powered consultants as well as television and radio spots. Democrats Brian Schatz and Colleen Hanabusa are doing well—they’ve got $121,000 and $113,000, respectively—but the Political Action Committee (PAC) EMILY’s List has not yet begun contributing money to Hirono’s campaign. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD PAKISTANI POLO The Gilgit tribe beat Chitral, 9-6, this year in the annual, bloody, takeno-prisoners, referee-less polo match on a remote, two-mile-high field on a mountain in Pakistan, an event that, despite its viciousness, some observers credit with forestalling actual war between the tribes. According to a May dispatch in ESPN The Magazine, clubbing of opponents is rampant. And when a star player was thrown and landed on his head, motionless and thought perhaps even to be dead, fans screamed for him to be cleared from the field quickly so the match could continue. He only had a broken neck and concussion.
UNIQUE RESPONSES TO DANGER In May, just after bird flu was discovered in Ivory Coast, hundreds of young people flocked to Abidjan’s nightclubs to taunt the disease with a new dance imitating a chicken in the throes of death, according to a Reuters dispatch (“leaning backward, shaking [the] wrists, arms and legs... with a loud clucking sound”).
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS In May, a U.S. Court of Appeals panel ruled that Scott Panetti remains eligible for execution in Texas despite his delusional and schizoaffective disorders and the opinion of one law professor that Panetti is the “gold-plated craziest” death-row inmate he’d ever seen. Charged with murder after having been drug-addicted since childhood and in mental institutions 14 times, Panetti was nonetheless permitted by his trial judge to act as his own lawyer. CAKE, ICE CREAM AND JIM LEHRER Troy and Jennifer Schally disclosed in June that their son Henry had chosen, among several possibilities as the theme for his third birthday party, PBS’s NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, and the Schallys supplied a birthday cake with a photo of the show’s correspondents and a periodic playing of its theme music. According to a Washington Post report, Lehrer sent along an autographed photo, signed in the name Henry calls him, “Jimmy Jimmy BoBo.”
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS William Collins, 37, was arrested in Baldwin Place, N.Y., in June and charged with DUI even though his car wasn’t moving. According to police, Collins was passed out drunk in the driver’s seat of the locked car, in “park,” with his body positioned so that the gas pedal was depressed, causing the engine to race and start to overheat. Collins was so unresponsive that only when police broke a window did he awaken and notice them.

THE MARCH OF SCIENCE Researchers from the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center announced in May that they had grown a fully functional, artificial penis from a rabbit—using his own genes—which they hoped would lead to future development of a human penis, for men with birth defects, body trauma or cancer. And Ambreed New Zealand introduced in June a go-cart-like machine for ranchers to gather sperm from bulls. A driver maneuvers the vehicle, designed to resemble a cow, so that the bull can mount it. The driver waits patiently until the bull is done and then drives away with the sperm. MTW

Stepping into Maui’s tango community By Samantha Campos T
he studio is buzzing with activity and the sounds of Latin music. A woman walks in. A little nervous, slightly giddy, she signs her name on a sheet by the front door. Then she hands some money to the smiling assistant behind the desk and sits down. Rebecca is an attractive woman in her 40’s, with sleek blonde hair and glasses. She’s wearing a silk blouse and matching knee-length skirt. Slipping off her beige designer flats, she replaces them with threeinch black high heels with straps. Anxiously, she surveys the room. This is Rebecca’s first tango class. She’s always wanted to take lessons, but because of the hectic schedule required by her job running her own consulting firm, she just never had the time. Until now. There are about 25 people in the beginning class of Argentine Tango at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s Omori Studio. The instructor, Gawain Bantle, stands in the middle of the room and warmly addresses his new students, who are now crowded against one wall, alongside a row of a dozen chairs. Bantle inspects everyone’s shoes—one woman’s open-toed, backless heels won’t work but thankfully she has brought another pair—and tells them to form two lines. “First, we must learn to walk,” he says. Unlike other Latin dances like salsa, rumba and cha cha, tango is a walking dance. It originated as a social dance during the late 19th century in Buenos Aires that derived from the music of Europe, South America and Africa. Tango is a dance for couples, with the man taking the leading role and the woman following. And though basic steps and postures are taught in classes today, the most marked characteristic of traditional Argentine tango is improvisation. Bantle explains this to the class as he leads them in a slow, sliding walk from one side of the room to the other. He then instructs everyone how to “push off”—the energetic steps that gives tango its definitive style. “Make a decisive step into the space,” says Bantle. “It’s a big statement, almost like saying, ‘I’m here!’ It gives the masculine quality to the dance.” In tango usually, with a few exceptions, the man walks forward and the woman walks backwards. Bantle demonstrates this with an assistant. And then he teaches everyone in Five-day event, including milongas, the class—male and female—to walk backwards, leaning forward as they walk back, and looking straight ahead. “Stay connected,” he says. “Find your balance by yourself. Then you share the balance with another person.” classes, performances and the A few days earlier, I met with Bantle outside at a small café table in a Makawao courtyard. Grand Milonga/Dinner. He is a handsome man, with graying hair and sparkling light eyes, an easy smile and not-so-easy-to-place accent. And a year and a half ago, he got into tango. or call 876-0485. After training with various dancers—Sonny and Nancy Newman from Seattle, George Garcia in Oahu, among others— Bantle got caught up in the community of tango lovers, and went to his first tango fest in Portland. danced in all-night milongas—a more rustic, faster-paced tango. Bantle was hooked. “You go into some kind of trance when you dance,” he says. “[In tango] you learn to listen to where the weight is going. It creates an intimacy and you really have to be present. That’s where the energy is.” Bantle says the allure, as well as the dance, is multi-faceted. People young and old can dance close together or in open-style, improvising movements, which leads to endless possibilities. He believes the complexities of dancing tango helps people become more alert, bringing awareness to all parts of the body. But he also admits it can sometimes be difficult for men to lead and women to follow in the traditional masculine and feminine roles of the dance. While it may look nice as an art form, these days it’s not generally “okay” in American society for women to yield and men to direct. “Today, gender rules are blurred,” says Bantle. “But with tango, you can be really direct. People relax into it, when they otherwise might not choose to live their life this way. It’s something biological almost. When you feel the connection, a whole energetic wave occurs—undulations—and the sensations are great.” Another instructor, Diane, who teaches Bantle’s classes when he is away, concurs. “Following is like falling into a warm pool,” she says. “You have to let go, surrender to your partner total control and responsibility. It’s not submission. For American women in particular, they’re used to not letting go, resisting it. But it’s a beautiful balance. I can spend my whole day [being a businesswoman] then I can come and just exhale. Let them do it. It’s like a sigh.” A week later, a practica—an informal community dance to practice tango movements—is taking place at Studio Maui in Haiku. Rebecca is there, along with other students from her beginning class, as well as students from an intermediate class and several instructors. In all, about 40 dancers of varying skill levels switch partners freely between songs. “I heard you’re a beginner for the first four years anyway,” says one “intermediate” student amicably to her “first-time” partner. The sultry beats of tango coincide with the gentle swooshing of skirts and sliding of soles across the wooden floor of the studio. Some partners are in postured embrace, looking into each other’s eyes and shifting weight from one side to another, before taking the first tentative step. And yet other couples dance with eyes closed, falling into a seamless rhythm, lifting and gliding in perfect syncopation. Every so often, dancers retreat to the chairs set up to the side of the room, in order to rest and recharge. Tomas, a student of seven months, came with his wife, a professional dancer who had never before tried tango. Like many couples that sign up for lessons, Tomas and his wife were looking to find something fun to do together, that could get them on equal ground and establish a deeper bond. “There is a perfect connection between the music, the resistance and the grace that creates an energy between people,” says Tomas. He laughs. “Some people don’t know what to do when it hits them. But I can see how some people pack up their stuff and move to a bigger tango community. It’s like yoga for two—like a relationship. There’s a certain point where you feel like you don’t what the hell is going on. And then, after time, there’s a symmetry, a connection. It can be addictive.” Another woman sitting on the sidelines agrees. “This is great meditation—a great way to stay in the present,” she says. “It’s all about give and take. The minute I put my focus on somebody or something else, I lose it. I’m not very good at surrendering so it’s great to have that tension and surrender to the partner.” Avi, a dancer of “all types” but a student of tango for two months, has caught the bug as well. “This dance is more than a dance,” he says. “It’s a different vibe, energy, challenge with yourself. The responsibility the leader has and the connection the follower has—it’s more like a meditation, it’s not sexual. You can feel more with tango. It is the root of masculinity and femininity—there’s no other dance like it. I used to be afraid but now I feel really connected to who I am and what I am.” He pauses, smiles and nods his head emphatically. “What you’re doing here is affecting life.” For more info on classes and events, visit www.Loveoftango.com or call Gawain Bantle at (808) 876-0485. Marc Aurel taunting me with my own lunch
Café Fare Sidewalk dining at Café Marc Aurel The other day my colleague Wendy and I decided to have lunch at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku. On our way out the door, we ran into Samantha.
Café Marc Aurel 28 N. Market St., Wailuku, 2440852. Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or later Mon.-Sat. $ “Want anything from Café Marc Aurel?” I naively asked. “Just came from there,” she said, still holding the coffee concoction she’d just purchased. There’s no question that the Maui Time Weekly staff enjoys the café. I mean, we all liked it fine in the days when the office was in Lahaina. But now that we’ve moved into an office building directly across the street from it, we can see the café’s tables and hear the nightly entertainment from our balcony overlooking Market St. It’s a wonder we don’t spend the whole day over there. It’s especially shocking given that in early May, Aurel considerably expanded his lunch menu. Mediterranean Tacos? Baguette Sandwiches with Prosciutto, Black Forest Ham or Buendner Fleisch Air Cured Beef? Panzanella Marinara Italian Summer Salads? The names and descriptions flew at Wendy and I as we stood at the counter looking over the menu. So many decisions, so much time… Some of this stuff I’ve had before. The Salade du Saison, a simple mix of Kula greens and vegetables served with either lemonette dressing or
balsamic vinegar is quite good, though the former dressing is a little too lemonette for my tastes. The baguette sandwich with turkey is also delicious, though the cheddar it comes with is a bit too overpowering a cheese for such an understated meat. Then there’s the panzanella salad. It looks almost like salsa, but it’s so much more. It’s nothing more than chopped Roma tomatoes, yellow bell peppers, green onions, Kalamata olive and chunks of bread marinated in balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s stunningly tasty. All of it is perfect café food—a solid but light dish that goes with a glass of wine or juice while sitting at a sidewalk table. But now I wanted something new. Wendy opted for the Margerit sandwich, which is simply sliced mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, capers, onions, olive oil and Balsamic Vinegar stuffed into a baguette. It’s a simple, elegant little sandwich, and she loved it. “The baguette is crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not at all chewy,” she said. And that’s not a trivial point—too many baguettes are chewy, requiring nearly far too much gnawing when taking a bite. I decided to go with the Mediterranean Tacos. They actually fall somewhere between a falafel and a taco: take a pita and top it with the panzanella salad, cucumbers, hummus, tzatziki (a Greek cucumber sauce) and feta cheese sprinkles. Add a dash of lemon juice and you’ve got quite a lunch. Later, Aurel said the Margerit sandwich and the tacos are easily his best selling items. I believe it. MTW

No Ordinary Moments Wednesday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] I’m not usually one to fall for the latest popular new-age theory on how to live my life. Too many of these “alternative spiritualities” seem based on some half-cocked scheme, like life’s big secret actually comes from telepathic geckos from outer space or something. But every once in awhile, some outside-of-the-box theories resonate in my desolate soul. It’s usually stuff that just feels right, or gives me a different perspective that I instantly relate to, but had never consciously thought of before. Peaceful Warrior is one of those films that did this for me. Of all people, Jim Carrey—the facially gymnastic comedic actor—agrees. “When you hear the truth, it sounds familiar,” he said. “Like seeing a reflection of something you already possess. This film is that clear and simple reflection. I enjoyed every moment.” And this is also sure to ring true for fans of the similarly inspiring spiritual-mind-trip flick What the Bleep, whose own associate producer, Straw Weisman, said Peaceful Warrior is “Like Rocky for the soul!” Based on Dan Millman’s best-selling memoir, The Way of Peaceful Warrior, the movie revolves around the story of a young, ambitious male gymnast, as he re-examines his life and learns to live in the moment after meeting an enigmatic gas-station guru who challenges his notions of achievement and victory for an ideology that favors consciousness over intelligence, and spiritual strength over physical prowess. Stars Scott Mechlowicz as Dan Millman, Nick Nolte as Socrates, Tim DeKay as Coach Garrick and Amy Smart as Joy. Also playing Friday, July 28. 120 min. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

Affordable Housing Now! Thursday (Tonight!), 6 p.m. at the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater [PLANNING SYMPOSIUM] The press release on what’s going to be discussed at this thing sounds deadly dull— “The focus of these efforts will be on housing for a sustainable workforce; the execution of policy; traffic; staffing; and other workforce-related issues consequent to community-wide housing”—but put simply, it’s a big meeting for people to listen and talk about why the hell no one except the Oprah Winfreys and Everett Dowlings of the world can afford to live on this rock anymore. Hosted by the Kihei Community Association, it’s free and open to the public. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Roots Empress Returns Friday, 6 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center [REGGAE] Light it up! All sorts of flames will be ignited Friday when “roots empress” Dezarie joins Ikahba, Humble Soul, THC and Paula Fuga in a scorching reggae concert. Fans trying to spiritually match the music’s vibe will be setting aflame the kind of THC that one inhales while watching the kind that sings onstage. Also, since these events always seem to remind us of how small of a world it is, count on the high possibility of running into an old boyfriend/girlfriend/hook-up and thus reigniting an old flame. Finally, of course, many will hold up their lighters to the hot music of Dezarie and company (incidentally, her newest CD is called Set the Flame). Tickets: $23 advance, $30 at the door; available at Beach Road Records (Kihei), Bahama Mama (Paia), Requests (Wailuku), Paradise Audio (Wailuku). Gates open at 5 p.m. All ages welcome. Damon Wayans
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC
Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC
[HAWAIIAN MUSIC] I don’t really know how to put this, but Henry Kapono is kind of a big deal. He’s one of those guys who you’d want to call “Mister” upon meeting in person, and I usually don’t even feel comfortable calling my bosses mister. He commands that kind of respect because of the length and quality of his music career and the deep love he has for Hawai’i, which is reflected in every one of his 21 solo and collaborative albums. Also noteworthy is the name of his first band (Pakalolo), the fact that he once received an athletic scholarship to UH Manoa, and that he’s been around for a minute. As a young man he entertained the troops in Vietnam, and he even appeared on Magnum, P.I. and Regis, way back when Kathy Lee was still around. His latest release, Wild Hawaiian, is his first all-Hawaiian release and is the number-one seller at Borders stores statewide, proving that Kapono (which means “righteous” in Hawaiian) is no moldy oldie. My personal favorite Henry Kapono story is the time he awoke me at yet another boring Jack Johnson concert by singing the most stunning version of Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song” I’ve ever heard. Thank you, Mister Kapono. Stay classy. Tickets: $10, $25, $30, keiki get half-price. [COREY NIELSEN]
DAY
[COMEDY] In nine months I will attempt to interview the Dalai Lama, who many consider the spiritual leader of the world. Taking nothing away from his Holiness, I have to wonder if his devotees have ever beheld the divinity of one Damon Wayans. When I heard that Wayans would be appearing on Maui for a night of stand-up comedy I shuddered, mistaking him for one of the Wayans responsible for the atrocious White Chicks and equally atrocious looking Little Guy. But enlightenment hit me like a coin-filled sock when I realized that it was not Shawn or Marlon, but DAMONFREAKING-WAYANS who would be preaching the gospel of humor at the MACC. That’s the Damon Wayans, who on the strength of his “Homie the Clown” In Living Color character alone is a comedy god (a “Homie” movie is due in 2007). Still not a believer? Damon is the divine creator of perhaps the most heavenly character ever committed to celluloid, Major Payne, orator of the immortal line, “Maybe what he need is for you to pop your titty out his mouth and let the boy grow up.” I can only pray that my attempt to meet with the Dalai Lama works out better than my efforts to nail down Wayans for a pre-show interview. But I know I can’t be too disappointed. For as the Dalai Lama might say, it is desire that causes suffering. Or in the words of Major Payne, “You want sympathy? Look in the dictionary between spit and syphilis.” [CN]

Water Torture M. Night Shyamalan sinks to the bottom Apologists for the categorically inadequate M. Night Shyamalan have their work cut out defending yet another cinematic killjoy from the “auteur” whose high box office receipts do not reflect the ineptitude of his filmmaking skills. Inflated from an impromptu “bedtime story” that Shyamalan invented for his children, Lady In The Water is a hackneyed story about a water nymph inappropriately named “Story” (Bryce Dallas Howard) who resides at the bottom of an apartment complex swimming pool.

Paul Giamatti is Cleveland Heep, a stuttering superintendent who discovers the sprite, or “narf” as she’s called, and protects her until he can wrench enough exposition from his underemployed neighbors to send Story back to her “Blue World” home via an eagle. Standing in their way is a red-eyed hyena creature called a “scrunt” that roams the compound attempting to kill Story. The pun is intrinsic. Voice-over narration informs us that the narf has the potential to save humanity from capitalism if the humans around her merely glimpse her naked nymph form. It’s fitting that Shyamalan intended Lady In The Water as a bedtime story because no matter how awake you are before you watch the movie, it will put you right to sleep. Shyamalan uses so much clunky exposition that there is hardly any forward-moving action.
Shyamalan doesn’t just break the “showdon’t-tell” rule of screenwriting, he rejects the virtuous theorem as so much debris. Lady In The Water is a visual drone of muted colors embellished with a ham-fisted musical score by James Newton Howard (The Village). Newton isn’t satisfied at only telling the audience what to feel with bombastic aural cues, he wants to bulldoze the spectators into a corner and slap them around some. The effect is equally as deadening as Shyamalan’s onerous attempt at story construction. The script screams pretentious affectation. Every time Cleveland calls out Story’s name it is as if he is inhabited by Shyamalan’s alter ego searching for elusive narrative threads to fill out the movie. If the film weren’t already feeble enough, Shyamalan insists on upgrading his signature cameo performances in his own films to that of featured supporting player. Shyamalan plays a novelist who lives with his “sister” in Cleveland’s apartment complex. Forget that his acting skills couldn’t get him cast in a high school production of Our Town. Watching a skilled acting craftsman like Giamatti delivering lines to Shyamalan is like watching Robert Duvall talk to his cat about politics. It’s the only thing in the movie that sent shivers down my spine. M. Night Shyamalan got incredibly lucky on his vastly overrated feature The Sixth Sense and has milked that unjustified success over four increasingly abysmal films Unbreakable, Signs, The Village and now Lady In The Water. He has become the David Blaine of hack auteurs. If David Blaine finds failure upsetting, I wonder how Shyamalan will face the day when his audience finally abandons him. MTW

On the Road Again... With Willie Nelson and Harmonic Tribe July 7, 2006 Going from Maui to the heart of Texas is probably hard to wrap your mind around. I’m traveling with Harmonic Tribe, which is comprised of Willie Nelson’s sons, Lukas (guitar) and Micah (drums); also Andrew Kloppel (bass), Donny Smith (guitar), Tato Melgar (Percussion), and myself on lead vocals. Try to imagine a rock band with a Latin percussionist and a reggae singer trying to sing the blues in front of 15,000 die-hard, shit-kickin’, country music fans at Willie Nelson’s 33d annual 4th of July picnic in Ft. Worth, Texas. Don’t underestimate the Texas audience, though. We had them out of their lawn chairs, waving their peace signs and singing along. What makes our acceptance by this crowd even more mind-boggling is the fact that we had to follow acts like Shooter Jennings and Leon Russell, who are both musical giants in the South. Focusing on songs from our first CD, The Awakening, the highlight of our set was when Willie joined us onstage for his song, “Whatever Happened To Peace On Earth,” which was a serious moment during a day of 4th of July fun in the Texas sun. He stayed onstage as we tore into our closing song, “The Harder They Come” from his reggae album and had all 15,000 in attendance skanking to the beat. What a start to our summer tour with our hero and host. From here we are off to Youngstown, Ohio as we make our way through the states as the opening act for Willie’s summer tour. Please check our MySpace profile at www.myspace.com/harmonictribe for our tour schedule, photos and updates. Feel free to leave us some comments from home. We would love to hear from y’all and look forward to our return. July 13, 2006 Checking in again. Here we are, 10 days and nine shows into the tour. Every show has been sold out, from Texas to Ohio, all the way to Indiana. People really
Marty and friends seem to be responding to our mix of blues and reggae. It is amazing to witness the range of ages at Willie’s concerts. Whether it’s people from age eight to 80-yearolds, everyone is personally touched by the experience. We’ve played at a variety of venues including the sublime Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and had the whole crowd singing in three-part harmony to our song, “Pray For Them,” which in a predominantly Republican State, was quite a feat. When we took the stage in Canton, Ohio, we knew this was not “our” audience. But the Vibe of Maui shined through our performance, and the audience was soon singing and dancing to our songs.
Being from Maui is a great calling card, and it also doesn’t it hurt to have Willie’s own sons in the band. But sons of the headliner or not, this band pegged the crowd and gave from its heart. Even though no one here has ever heard of us, I get the feeling we would be welcome back. In Louisville, Kentucky, the warmth and acceptance was the same. From my years of doing this, I know when people really like something and when they are just being polite. We were shaking hands with 50-somethings, who said things like, “Your songs took me right back to Hawai’i” or “You guys stepped out of another decade.” The morale of the group is high as we head to West Virginia. More stories from the road next week... MTW

If you’re having trouble with the IRS, haven’t filed tax returns in years, or owe money, we can help. We’re the “we’re weird, we actually love doing taxes” folks, so if there’s anyway humanely possible to make this a pleasant experience, it’s with us. And now that our tax season is finally over this is the best time of the year for us to help you with your little problem. Start soon though. We don’t want to scare you but... it can take months to gather lost/missing information, prepare returns, wait for IRS assessment, request penalty abatement, prepare an offer in compromise, and all the other miriad steps necessary before your problem is resolved for the least amount possible.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I wouldn’t say you’re riding a bike with square wheels, exactly, but they’re hardly round, either. The worst part is you can only blame your limited progress on yourself, since you chose— consciously or unconsciously—the means you’re using to move forward, which can best be described as clunky, laughable and nearly pointless. There’s a downhill section coming up; it’d be a shame not to be able to take advantage of it. Hammer those tires into perfect circles, already. The tool I’d use for the job? The unadulterated truth.

VACATION RENTALS
I believe you can manifest stuff in your life just by wishing for it (in the right way). It helps if you’re not attached to any exact picture of results, so the universe can surprise you with something you’d actually like better than what you think you’d like. It’s a tricky, fiddly thing: your wish has to be fueled by real, personal desire, but not limited to excessive attachment to that desire. What’s something you truly want? Be specific, but not too specific. You may think it’s bullshit, but why not try it? You’re more likely to make it work this week than most.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) We use this word, “instinct,” to describe what animals know without ever having to learn. But what the hell is instinct? These creatures are born knowing things. They don’t need to be taught this knowledge. Beavers know how to build dams. Could you build an effective dam? This is knowledge, the kind it would take you or me a long time to figure out, learn and remember. There are certain things you know without ever having been taught them. This week is a good one for accessing and using that knowledge.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The most common question I’m asked: “How do you write your horoscopes?” I’m bored of my standard answer, so I’ve started making shit up. I’ve invented imaginary aliens (who I supposedly channel) as well as a mysterious and ancient monkey paw. Sometimes I tell them I let whoever asks predict their own future. What would you say, Libra? What’s your horoscope for two weeks from now? Make a prediction for yourself. (Tell me, if you like: Caeriel@yahoo.com). It’ll probably be more accurate than mine; I’ve only got a few charts and my intuition to work with. You have your whole life.

Sorry, Scorpio. Nothing exciting’s likely to happen to you this week. Hey, don’t get dramatic. You can’t have earth-shattering events occur every week. Just because you’re ready for action doesn’t mean the universe will automatically provide it. Of course, you always have the option of stirring crap up yourself—but I wouldn’t. Come on, take a vacation from intensity. Practice being lighthearted and silly. Take nothing seriously. Put away your sting, your bedroom eyes and your piercing stare. Have some fun. When was the last time you just played?

What’s gotten you so hot and bothered, Sag? I know it’s not just the weather. You’re worked up into an internal frenzy because of something else—an unrequited desire, or perhaps even a requited one. Ready for a break? Too bad. Because things are likely to heat up even further. I know, your first instinct in that case is to run for the hills. But fleeing won’t do you any good. Besides, you can take this, even if it’s more than just uncomfortable. Stick it out a little longer. See where you can take it. If it’s still “unbearable” in two weeks time, then you have my permission to skip town.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You missed out on World Cup fever. Even though I’m hardly a sports fan, I let myself get sucked in, carried on the exuberant madness of those around me. You may not naturally share the enthusiasm your partner or your friends have about something, but won’t you consider going along with it, just this once? I’m not talking about lamely humoring them while dragging your feet the whole way. I’m suggesting you wholeheartedly run with the pack this time. It might be a “waste” of time, but you never know—you might actually enjoy it.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Don’t you wish, sometimes, that you could experience life as a video game? Screw something up, and you could just play it again until you get it right. Unfortunately, life’s stakes are higher than any video game—you usually only get one try. This week, however, is an exception. You are likely to be granted a single second chance to redo one thing you definitely could’ve done better. I hope you’ve been practicing (in your head, at least). Because if you screw up this time around, you definitely won’t get another shot.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
classifieds@mauitime.com
You can’t spin straw into gold—yet. But you are capable of performing similar wealthattracting miracles—when you want to. Your problem isn’t lack of ability; it’s discipline over your own mind. You don’t lack ambition, really; Pisces are dreamers first and foremost. It’s just sometimes difficult getting yourself to do the things that will make your dreams reality. I think you question, often, whether you truly want your dreams to come true. Once you stop doing that, they probably will.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
MAILING
I’ve adored every Ram I’ve ever met. But one thing I’ve noticed is you don’t hear how well you’re loved nearly often enough. Sometimes you’re led to believe that you’re too needy and selfcentered, and shouldn’t crave so much affection. Bullshit. You do deserve more than you get. So here’s some more: You rock. Your warmth, generosity and playfulness are awesome. Hopefully there’ll be a lot more of this kind of thing coming your way this week. You don’t even need to ask for it; just put yourself in situations where it might come your way and it probably will.

Your fellow Taurus David Attenborough—the man best-known for his brilliant nature documentaries—is one of my heroes. What an amazing career he’s created for himself: getting paid (probably well) to get up close and personal with Earth’s most fascinating creatures. Aim in his direction, would you? Find some way to earn money doing things you’d do for free. Too many of us spend too much time earning money doing things we hate. Can you see even a halfway-decent chance of making things happen your way? If you do, it’d be a crime not to go full-throttle for it.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I’ve never met a Gemini who consistently had trouble talking—about pretty much anything, anytime. So why have you shut yourself down, at least about one particular (and admittedly touchy) subject? It’s most unlike you. Do you really want that sore place to fester and get worse before you’ll open your mouth about it? That’s lame. Speak up now, because forever holding your peace isn’t an option. You’ll have to mention what’s bugging you, eventually, believe me— and it’ll be a million times harder to resolve later than it is right this second. CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

In my 20’s, I never worried about it. Even now that I’m occupying that dreadful age bracket that elicits cries of, “But don’t you want to?” and “Are you ever gonna?” from my mother and nervous inquisitions from potential suitors, I wholeheartedly avoid the subject altogether. Don’t get me wrong—I love kids. Babies, too, especially the ones with the fauxhawk hairdos and the spit-up on their duck-embroidered jumpers who consistently wail louder and with a more impressive vocal range than a majority of those stupid emo-pop punk bands on the radio. It’s not that I don’t want children. I just don’t want them right now. The problem is I’ve been saying this for the last 10 years. And I imagine I’ll be saying it for the next—oh, I dunno—15? And that means I should be ready to conceive as I’m approaching my 56th birthday. Look, I know the technology is there and I may be a progressive thinker but the idea of having a 12-year-old when I’m 68 is not that appealing. Who would father my little future Pulitzer Prize-winning rock star anyway? I don’t have a boyfriend and I am NOT about to go on some big, desperate hunt for my “baby’s daddy.” It’s hard enough just to find someone I like long enough to want to sit through a movie with after dinner. But the idea of thinking some guy and I will make it through not just the end credits but also the prepubescent years of some wild-haired, halfSatan spawn that has his looks and my persistently mocking tendencies? Yeah, just pass the popcorn and tell me where the nearest exit is. A lot of men my age already have children of their own. Whether they’re reeling from divorce, or split amicably from their spouses, they’re still contending with the obligations—emotional, physical and financial—stemming from a relationship that didn’t work out. While it’s gratifying to see these men pour themselves into their children, I can’t help but think these men would not be willing to undertake another procreation venture any time soon. And I hate that I’d ever have to entertain such possibilities anyway. I date who I want, when I want, with no audible time clock a-ticking. But that doesn’t stop the Great Baby Hope of friends and family who constantly provide alternative solutions. “You don’t need a man,” a friend told me recently. “Go to the sperm bank or adopt. Do it on your own!” The thing is, I don’t want to do it on my own. I have the utmost respect and admiration for single women raising children by themselves, especially my mom. And I think I turned out okay. But I also saw what she sacrificed. And I often wonder— even if she doesn’t—who she could’ve become had she not had me on her own, or what she would have done had my father stuck around long enough to help. I keep reading about these single women who “make the big choice” between having a career or a kid. And that if you’re still single without children by the time you’re 32, well, it’s just not likely gonna happen. But that’s exactly the time when the desperate or deflated dream truly comes alive, changing the romantic priorities of single women nationwide. Maybe I’m ignorant, naïve and selfish, but I just can’t do that. When I was younger, I always thought of achievement in terms of age: By the time I’m 25, I will have received my doctorate; at 28, I’ll be married; at 30, I’ll pop out my first kid; my first book comes at 33, with an appearance on Oprah around 35. Etcetera. Of course, life isn’t really working out like that. It’s enough at the moment just to try to do something meaningful with my life, even if it means I’m not currently in hot pursuit of having a child. Though I’m way off schedule, I haven’t completely given up on the baby dream. For now, I’ve just decided to be.
