Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle says on her campaign website’s “Accomplishments” page (www.lindalingle.com/accomplishments) about her administration’s handling of the state Procurement Code: “Reformed the state’s purchasing system, known as the Procurement Code. Reduced exemptions from the code to ensure fairness and competition for all stakeholders—the vendors/contractors and the public.”

What she didn’t say: One of the most important “stakeholders” in the business of buying shirts and uniforms and such for state government is labor, and they remain completely outside the state’s Procurement Code. To this day, the State of Hawai’i buys clothes from sweatshops all over the world, including Honduras, El Salvador and Madagascar. And there’s no way state or county officials can even negotiate with vendors over labor practices because Lingle doesn’t want anything—like worker rights, wages or living conditions—to affect her ability to arrange trade agreements. -Anthony Pignataro

BETTER KNOW A CANDIDATE

BY GENA GAMMIE GENA@MAUITIME.COM

Bill Stroud

LC Watch Campaign Time

RUNNING FOR: Maui County Mayor

“The decision to enforce checking IDs for everyone is absolute horseshit,” Kula resident Kent Noonan emailed me recently. “Now I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore. This is really a waste of everybody’s time and an exercise in authoritarian control.”

CURRENT OCCUPATION: President of the Vietnam Veterans of Maui County MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you? BILL STROUD: I’m not a politician, for one thing, and that should actually be enough. In Hawai’i politicians have been leading us for 50 years, and what good have they done us? Everybody admits that there is something wrong with our society. The cause of our demise is our political system. Our leaders are supposed to represent us, not lead us. Instead we are led by special interests. I’m a war vet; I’ve been in combat. One of the things that I learned in combat is to learn how to get something done with common sense, practical approaches. So I have the strength, the experience and the leadership to be a good mayor. If people want to get together and institute their dream, I’m their guy.

Now the LC does many things that piss people off—like requiring all dancing at nightclubs take place within carefully taped-off zones or prohibiting cursing on stage—but the Card Everyone rule has really struck a nerve. Even the Maui County Department of Liquor Control now understands that Noonan speaks for many people. In fact, they’ve scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 13 to discuss eliminating the long-established LC rule of requiring all bars, restaurants and stores to card every man and woman, regardless of apparent age, who wants to buy booze.

When it comes to land development, what is your number one priority? The first thing I would do in relation to that is to get the county attorney to figure out why the developers still owe us 3,200 affordable housing units. The developers don’t want to put out; they just want to take their profits and run away. The biggest plan I have is to get the input of the united group of Hawaiians to work with the county to help us find agreements on what’s to be done to protect our land based on their knowledge of being on this land for thousands of years. We can learn how to reinstitute stream flow, clean up the coasts and get the ecosystem rebalanced. What are your feelings on Hawaiian sovereignty? I think it’s a battle that may or may not be won by them, but I do agree that they have titles to lands that have been stolen from under them that need to be redressed. As mayor I will work with six or eight thousand acres to help Hawaiians live a lifestyle of their choice. I will lease them county land to build houses or little communities on. I can’t redress all the wrongs of the past, but I can do what I can as mayor to start treating them equally. Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when I say Governor Linda Lingle. Clone. Iraq? A bloody mess.

sleeping with another guy. I wanted to jump out a window—I had to really root myself and get my energy right to get through that. But being in combat—I was in combat during the Tet Offensive—was the hardest in a way. I had to really look at myself and at my character. There were things I really didn’t like and had to change. That was the most difficult and the most rewarding experience in a way. Nothing can prepare you for combat. What was the last book you read? 1417. It’s about the Chinese discovering the world before Columbus in the West, and how Columbus really used Chinese charts [NOTE: the book is actually called 1421]. If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be? Because I live here, I would like to meet the oldest, most knowledgeable living Hawaiian. I don’t even know who that would be, but it would be someone who has not yet been lost to the ills of society. No second stringers, though, just straight to the top person, male or female. What is your favorite thing about Maui?

Pakalolo?

That I’m here raising my son, and I think Maui offers me the hope of an opportunity to leave him a better world. MTW

Medicinally, yes. Tourism?

Of course, there’s no guarantee the Liquor Commission—which approves all the county’s liquor rules—will agree to change the policy, regardless of how many Kent Noonans show up at the hearing. Being an insular body that’s part of an insular, self-funded county agency, it’s hard to predict how they’ll react to public criticism. Then again, I realized as I chewed over Noonan’s email, the fact that the LC is a county agency is actually an advantage to those who want to change the carding rule. Sure, they do as they please, but they’re also beholden to the Mayor’s office, which appoints both the LC’s director and the various members of the Liquor Commission. The mayor. Alan Arakawa—guy who’s running for reelection this year. You know, now that I think about it, the LC’s rule requiring all establishments to card everyone would make one hell of an issue in the mayoral campaign. Imagine if you will, the spectacle of all 10 mayoral candidates sitting together at a candidate forum trying to explain to anxious voters how they’d want the LC to behave during their administration. All someone has to do is ask, and the rest should take care of itself.

A natural resource that is being exploited by the rich.

-Anthony Pignataro What is the most difficult thing that you’ve ever had to do? [Laughing] Well, in my youth, my girlfriend ended up

Have you heard those new radio spots for Alexander & Baldwin, which takes over the top slot this week? You know, the ones where A&B Properties Vice President Grant Chun talks and talks about how the company is so selflessly building all those homes around Maui and donates money to all these charities and has always looked out for the island and its people? Oh man, that’s good pub—especially since Chun was one of the Gang of Seven that wined and dined five Maui County Councilmembers—that would be Bob Carroll, Mike Molina, Joe Pontanilla, Riki Hokama and mayoral hopeful Dain Kane—at Mama’s Fish House in early March. None of the A&B execs or councilmembers said anything was illegal or unethical about what Molina later described to The Maui News as a “courtesy call where [A&B] expressed their appreciation for our being accessible to them.” In addition, Chun couldn’t explain to the News why councilmembers Jo Anne Johnson, Michelle Anderson and Danny Mateo weren’t invited. Sounds like a great radio spokesman to me! MTW

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, Aug. 2 The Republicans are really worried they’re going to lose the U.S. House of Representatives to the Democrats this November. Know how I know? They just told me by bashing three progressive Democrats running for the notso-progressive Ed Case’s 2nd District congressional seat. “Would Brian Schatz Vote Against Hourly Workers?” screamed the message from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC)—the main lobbying force trying to get as many Republicans elected to the House as possible. Four minutes later, an identical email—this time sporting Mazie Hirono’s name instead of Schatz’s— came in. Five minutes after that, they attacked Colleen Hanabusa. Each message was identical, insisting that voters “deserve to know” if Schatz/Hirono/ Hanabusa would have voted for House Resolution 5970, which passed the House on July 29. “Among other items, the legislation would increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour over three years,” said the NRCC email. “Additionally, the bill would provide permanent estate and gift tax relief.” See, this whole email thing is a great big bunch of bullshit designed to mess with a key congressional race. HR 5970 is a big bill—183 pages long, in fact. Of that, the first 180 pages deals with “estate tax” relief (letting rich kids keep their inheritances tax-free) and a host of other tax credits, subsidies and giveaways to the wealthy. Only on page 181 does the bill get around to raising the minimum wage, which seems to have been tacked on solely so Republicans could hammer Democrats. By the way, both Case and 1st District Representative Neil Abercrombie voted for the bill, but 22 Republicans actually voted against it. If the NRCC sent nasty emails denouncing those guys, I didn’t receive them.

THURSDAY, Aug. 3 He may not have been ridiculed by

the NRCC, but Democratic Kauai state Senator/2nd District candidate Gary Hooser sure knows how to get headlines. “I believe that Gary Hooser deserves to represent us,” said Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young fame in an Aug. 2 Hooser press release. Calling Hooser “the real deal,” Nash—who’s identified in the release as a “legendary singer-activist”— praised Hooser’s integrity, commitment to his constituents and Hendrix-like ability to play a Stratocaster with his teeth. “We have to remain vigilant about what kind of leaders we are sending to Washington,” said Nash. “These men and women affect our very lives.” No word yet on who Crosby, Stills and Young plan on endorsing.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

FRIDAY, Aug. 4 Today I bought 13.4 gallons of what drivers used to call “cheap” 87 Octane gasoline. At $3.59 a gallon, the grand total came to $48.10. What’s more, as long as public transportation on the island remains a sketchy, difficult alternative to driving, I will do this again and again and again. Is there a person on this island—or world, for that matter—who’s surprised that companies like Tesoro, which operates an oil refinery on Oahu, has in the second quarter once again posted record profits? In the spring, Tesoro made $326 million in profits, up from a paltry $184 million in the same quarter from 2005. Good thing Congress refused to impose any kind of windfall profits tax on the oil companies. It would break my heart if I found out they couldn’t rake in record money during these times of Middle East war and misery that have done so much to drive up the price of petroleum.

So Makena State Beach now closes at 6 p.m. Citing a spate of assaults and problems, state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) officials decided this weekend that both Big and Little beaches will close before sundown from now on. And you know what this means: a whole lot of pissed off naked people. “I feel like my church is being ripped away from me,” Essence Satterfield, 23, of Makawao says in today’s Maui News. According to DLNR officials quoted in the story, the whole decision was based on a “public safety issue” centered on repeated claims of assaults and robberies after dark. While I don’t doubt this is true, there’s another solution that doesn’t seem to be getting any airtime: keep the beach open as usual, but post a few DLNR rangers, lifeguards or state sheriffs there. Of course, that’s not going to happen because it would require a lot of money, and we all know the Lingle Administration hasn’t exactly thrown a lot of money toward the DLNR. But it’s cool—who said the public needs to use public beaches anyway?

TUESDAY, Aug. 8 Zuiker plans to run around the island telling people about his ideas—the war in Iraq is a disaster, massive budget deficits will harm future generations, out of control spending in congress and other nutty stuff. “Zuiker has pledged to run his ideas from the mountains to the sea,” said a Zuiker press release sent out today. From the mountains to the sea? Yeah, I suppose that’s impressive, though it would be something to watch him run from the sea to the mountains.

Crude oil costs $77 a barrel? Paris Hilton says she’s going to remain celibate for a year? Mayoral candidate James “Kimo” Apana tells The Maui News that he won’t accept any corporate contributions? DLNR now says the naked hippies can stay at Little Beach until sunset? I really wish people would tell me sooner that the world has ended. Anthony Pignataro just now discovered the exciting world of Sprunch. MTW

Art Ambassadors Seabury Hall kids show Maui to the world To help people understand what it would be like to live in an exotic place like Alexandria, Cachoeira or Maui, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently invited students, teachers and new media mentors from around the world to document life wherever they live. Called Scenes and Sounds of My City, it’s a chance for youth to create digital art that’s inspired by their home environment and then share it with the world. Of the 60 youth new media programs from 29 countries selected by UNESCO, organizers then choose by jury the 10 best and reward them with a trip to the Zero One ISEA 2006 Symposium, which runs Aug. 7-23 in San Jose, California. There, students will learn about many culturally diverse organizations and individuals working with art, science and emerging technologies. This year, students from Seabury Hall’s summer program and

OtherFriday, a youth new media lab located in Wailuku, made the cut. OtherFriday provides physical as well as virtual space for youth to use technology to engage their peers in a creative, constructive way. As such, they were also ideal candidates to develop on short notice a stunning audiovisual montage of Maui. In less than three weeks, OtherFriday founder HaiDai Nguyen said the 23 students finished a vibrant assortment of photos from Maui, digitally enhanced and artfully manipulated using the tools at their summer computer lab. Motivated by the promise of “Yes, you guys can play if you finish early,” they set their visuals to live ’ukulele music and poems that describe their photos and what is special about living on Maui. But it’s their project’s audio element that sets their project apart from the rest in the International Gallery. “HaiDai told me to do a nice rhythm on the ’ukulele,” says Allie Moskow, 10. “What I did for him was soft movement showing the pictures of the ocean and our town—where we live, our island. It didn’t take us that long

Allie Moskow and her family to come up with the poems because we looked at our pictures and we saw what we were writing about and thought of ideas about how to rhyme. “At first we were all confused with it and then after about 10 minutes we all got it,” she adds. “It was awesome when we heard everyone’s poems and recorded them.” Moskow will act as her school’s ambassador, and will travel with her father to San Jose to present the work.

“HaiDai showed us how to put pictures on Photoshop and how to record sound,” she says. “Then, we had to pick out pictures and do a poem, record it, and put it all together. It was really interesting, but kinda hard, I just had to keep on trying and he made it really clear what to do. He challenges us to keep on working with it. I think that we first didn’t know what to do and it was kind of confusing. Then, as we got onto different levels we knew what we were doing and how to get all the pictures and poems together onto the computer. It was really cool to see all of our stuff put together like that.” To say the least, Moskow is looking forward to working in the computer rooms. “I am excited to learn more and let my friends know what I did so that they can do it, too,” she says. “And to show them how our thing won and to show them all the different kids from different places so they can share the experience because I am going to take a lot of pictures there.” You can see all the Scenes and Sounds of My City projects at unesco.sjsu.edu. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD The parents of wannabe singeractor-celebrity Marissa Leigh, 16, of Scottsdale, Ariz., employ 10 people for her career development, according to an April Arizona Republic story. They include manager; publicist; voice coach; two acting coaches; people to do makeup, hair and wardrobe; musical composer; photographer; and webmaster. “She’s spoiled,” said her mother, “but hopefully, it’s a grounded spoiled.” However, on her national TV debut, on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16—a party which her parents spent $150,000 to stage—she was caught saying “I’m a princess,” “I’m such a rock star that I can do this” and “I always get exactly what I want.” Even after MTV cut the two songs she sang, she was optimistic: “[This show will] still put my name out there and stuff.”

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In Yorktown, N.Y., in June, one spouse who was roughed up by the other during a domestic eruption tried to talk police out of filing charges. However, the battering spouse this time was Emily Hanlon-Tarasov, a novelist, and the explanation of her husband—who was knocked unconscious when Hanlon-Tarasov angrily threw a book—was fittingly creative: “A few things began flying at the wall,” he said, “and one of them was a telephone book. And unfortunately, my head moved into the space that the book was flying [into].” Police nonetheless charged Hanlon-Tarasov with assault.

THE LAW OF IRONY The British watchdog Environmental Agency, which prosecutes pollution violators, was fined the equivalent of nearly $14,000 in May for allowing toxic

waste to flow from its monitoring station along the River Exe in Somerset. And in July, municipal officials in Provincetown, Mass., held a community meeting to air numerous complaints by heterosexuals that they are targets of hate speech by the town’s large gay and lesbian population.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES In June, Betty Jean Barachie was sentenced to 27 months in prison for embezzling $1.5 million from her employer so that she could indulge a mindless compulsiveshopping habit; among her inexplicable, 1,500-item haul were 58 coats, 16 chain saws, more than 3,000 books, and a John Deere tractor. And Nurse Christopher Irvin, 32, was charged in April with molesting a comatose 4-year-old girl under his care at Children’s Hospital in San Diego; he told police he had touched the girl’s genitals only “to see if I liked it.” He said he didn’t and that, because he wasn’t sexually aroused, he must not be attracted to children.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A federal appeals court in June affirmed the conviction of Aaron Fraser (aka Asante Kahari) for defrauding a Michigan woman he had met in an Internet chat room and had eventually taken for $38,000 in a counterfeit check scam. Kahari had sent the woman bogus checks for deposit into her account, and then met her to collect the cash, and was gone by the time the bank realized the checks were counterfeit. Kahari had denied the charges, but the prosecutor introduced portions of a book, The Birth of a Criminal by Asante Kahari, which describes in precise detail the very scheme Kahari was accused of pulling on the Michigan woman. “I would get online,” he wrote, “meet a broad and be mailing her the [computer-generated counterfeit] check the next day.” MTW

Piercing is fun. Poking a hole in your dermis and hanging some metal from it is neat. There’s nothing like sticking a needle through your flesh and jamming a metal rod, ring or stud into it. Did you know that the oldest mummified body discovered to date, Otzi the Iceman, had an ear piercing? Or that nose and ear piercing are mentioned in the Bible? Yeah, Genesis 24:22—check it out. Anyway, to find out how much things have changed—or not changed—since those days, we spoke with some of Maui’s best piercers about their own piercing experiences, preferences and just what it’s like to stick a needle in someone for fun and profit…

Debra Skin Deep Tattoo The very first piercing I did was my best friend’s labia. We did it in her bedroom and I was scared shitless. It was clean and sterile but it was a bloody mess. That was over 15 years ago, and I apprenticed after that. I don’t really have a favorite body part to pierce but I do have a favorite type of person to pierce: over 30 and not freaking out. My least favorite is a teen who’s freaking out, and their parents are freaking out, too. The best was this 76year-old man who had his nipples pierced, and a 75-year-old woman who did her bellybutton. It’s cute to see people of a more advanced age do something that’s not a normal part of their routine. 626 Front St., Lahaina, 661-8531.

Rachel Helmich Maui Tattoo Co. I don’t know if you want to print the story of my first piercing. You know how when you’re apprenticing, you just watch, watch, watch? Well, on my third day of watching my teacher had a walk-in. She said, “My nails are wet so you are going to do this belly button.” I was nervous and shaking. I had to tell the client to close their eyes so they wouldn’t see me shaking. I like to pierce the ear. Not the lobes but through the other parts of it. There are so many ways to pierce the ear—the tragus, the industrial, the conch, the rook. The greatest thing about piercing is it’s quick. It’s instant gratification for my clients. They always leave happy. It’s not long torture, like tattoos. My clients like to come to my shop because they feel comfortable and welcome. It’s a nice presentation here. 1945 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 874-0034.

Phoenix Maisel Lahaina Tattoo Co. My first piercing involved a safety pin and an ice cube in a bathroom. Ten years ago, it was just about pushing the needle through and not really knowing what you’re doing. But nothing went wrong, so I ended up the unofficial piercer at two different high schools. Now I enjoy unusual piercings—neck, throat, arms—and have just started studying implants. Whatever I can do to help that person’s beautification process—give them the confidence to help achieve their goal in how they wanna look— that’s what does it for me. It’s a real art form. My favorite experience was with a family—two brothers, two sisters, the mom and dad—who got a combination of 12 piercings in memory of their son who strayed away from the church-going family and got into narcotics and passed away. But they always kept the love for him. 222 Papalaua St., Suite 130, Lahaina, 661-8788.

Dora Caoile Outlaw Tattoo Man, my first piercing I shook. It was scary. I pierced a belly button. It was at Alley Cat, where I apprenticed. The belly button is the easiest to clamp and position, so I like that piercing the best. The scariest place to pierce is the nipple. I was a tattoo artist first, then I picked up piercing as a hobby. I like that you meet all kinds of weird people on the job. They want to pierce all kine places that you wouldn’t think of. Only thing is I don’t do any piercing down below [i.e., the genitals]. Hippies come in with da weird smells. I like everyone shower before they come in for piercing. I want them to smell good before I work on them. 291 Hookahi St. #210, Wailuku, 244-0700.

Brad Island Ink Tattoo Co. The first piercing I did was 22 years ago. I wanted to have my ears pierced so I did it myself, using a hat pin. Yeah, it hurt! What’re you thinking, woman? You’re putting a needle through your skin! My most memorable experience was hanging someone from a ceiling at my old job. My favorite is piercing septums—I’ve always had a love of them, since I was eight. It’s such a technical piercing, completely blind. And I just really like the way they look. Oh, and please let everyone know, you should never use a piercing gun—they’re filthy dirty and damage tissue. 100 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-9461.

Amy Boysen Island Ink Tattoo My first piercing was my best friend’s boyfriend’s nipples. It was in my brother’s shop in Colorado. I was a shop girl for three years, then I started apprenticing for piercing. They came out perfect but it took an hour and a half for me to mark them. The nostril is my favorite piercing because they are fun and cute. They look good on anybody. Piercing is all about where you put it. It’s all about placement. Our clientele here is diverse—we have the locals, the tourists, and the here-and-then-gone types. Everyone gets along great in our shop—not all shops have that environment. The best thing about this job is that people are always happy about the outcome of their peircings. 100 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-9461.

Jasn Sacred Center Tattoo I was 17 the first time I pierced someone. I did my girlfriend’s eyebrow with a couple pairs of tweezers and a pretty thick sewing needle. I started doing it professionally about four or five years later. I like what I do but especially if it’s not the regular ole navel, nostril or tongue piercing. My favorite experience was not too long ago, with my girlfriend. She was suspended from two hooks in her chest, in traditional Native American style. It was really, really painful—a life-changing experience that separates the soul from the body. We did it for spiritual reasons. Piercing is temporary but this wasn’t about wearing something around for everybody to see. 1847 S. Kihei Rd., Unit 102, Kihei, 96753, 891-1828.

Teri Cameron Chrome Lotus Tattoo I started piercing in 1991 with an eyebrow—it went very well but I was very nervous. It was at a seminar through the Gauntlet in San Francisco and L.A., who I later went to work for. My favorite piercings to do now are the sensual to exotics—that is to say, genital piercings—because they add more flavor to a person’s anatomy, and can be more pleasurable for them. My all-time favorite and most memorable piercing was in ’97 at the Gauntlet. These two gentlemen came in—one was wearing a codpiece, a leather hooded mask and a leash on his neck, held by his leather daddy. Their request was for an ampallang, which is a horizontal piercing through the head of the penis. It’s a big one for a guy and the most painful. But as I was doing the consultation, I noticed he had severely modified his penis, basically turning it into a mangina. Ultimately, we did six piercings—so he could zip-up his entire shaft—in order for it to become a “workable” unit. 143 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 661-1369. 16

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY JEN RUSSO JEN@MAUITIME.COM

Maui Grill & Bento The best Gobo ever I can eat a lot for lunch. Sometimes I’ll pack a lunch for work but find a few hours after I get there that I could really use some take out. I’m guessing the fact that I’m breastfeeding has something to do with it. Anyway, during these times of meal duress I often just head to the counter at Maui Grill and Bento in Wailuku.

Maui Grill and Bento 2050 Main St., Wailuku, 249-2161. Open Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. $ They have Japanese, Korean, American and “Maui style” cuisine. All their plate lunches come with a choice of green salad or mac salad, as well as two Asian veggie side dishes, like yummy pickled cabbage or crisp, seasoned lotus root. That means three salads per plate, people. Nobody does that. Maui Grill and Bento also takes their grilling and bentos seriously. It’s not in their name for nothing. With choices from delicious teriyaki unagi, fried mandoo, California roll, salmon, steak or chicken, these little boxes packed with side dishes and rice are healthy and quick. Economical too, with prices starting at a mere $4.50. If you get hungry on the way home, stop by after 5 p.m. when all bentos go for half price. The grill is a very earthy way to prepare food. The fire roasts meats and seafoods in a low fat preparation, but gives it that delicious fired-up barbecue flavor. The grilled Mahi Mahi, Salmon, calamari, kalbi, duck or chicken all come in a generous serving at an affordable $8.95. The steak and jumbo shrimp are a bit more, but you can combine them for a surf and turf lunch plate for just $10.95. Maui Grill and Bento also has a large selection of fresh sushi made to order ranging in price from $3 to $10.95. Big sushi combination platters go for between $10 and $30. All that’s great, but I rarely get past the specials board. One memorable day the choices were opakapaka with lemon caper sauce, seared ahi, barbecue pork

Owner, Gina Kim, with “Maui Style” steak and chicken combo plate chops or sausage and spaghetti. I opted for the opakapaka. It was grilled perfectly. The green salad came crisp and fresh with julienned carrots, shredded purple cabbage, green romaine and a shoyu-based dressing. Another day I ordered the gobo and pickled cabbage. Gobo is burdock root, julienned and cooked until tender and then seasoned just right. It’s a Japanese delicacy. I’ve also enjoyed their meat and fish jun combo, with thin teriyaki steak; fish filets prepared the authentic Korean

way, dipped in egg and fried; and their filling crab cake sandwich served with French fries. Their beverage refrigerator is stocked full of vitamin water, green tea, iced coffee, aloe drinks, sodas and water. You’ll also find containers of seasoned lotus root, prepared gobo, salted cabbage, kim chee, pickled cucumber, daikon and ginger, all of which is homemade. I haven’t seen a selection this good since O’oka’s was open. They also offer chips, cookies, candies and friendly service all week long. MTW

Perfect Foods Saturday, 2 p.m. at Maui Booksellers in Wailuku [HEALTH LECTURE/SLIDE SHOW] For many years I thought the perfect food was a deepdish pizza topped with pepperoni, olives, mushrooms, onions and green peppers. I still think it’s pretty damn near Olympian in terms of taste, but even the slimmest knowledge of nutrition tells me it’s far from perfect. Thank God for people like Dr. Steve Blake, who devote their lives to holistic health and the discovery of things like “antioxidant defense foods” and “perfect protein satisfaction” while the rest of us fumble through our kitchen drawers looking for pizza delivery menus. People like Dr. Steve Blake understand that many of the foods crucial to our health don’t come in cardboard boxes with breadsticks and a side of wings, delicious though they may be. But this Saturday, Dr. Steve Blake will show you exactly what you should be eating and why, if you want to live as healthy as possible. The event is free. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Wolf Songs

Welcome to Spintasy Island!

Friday, 7:30-10 p.m. at Hawaiian Village Coffee, Kahana

Saturday, 3-10 p.m. at Kalama Park in Kihei

[MUSIC] Micah Wolf is a relatively new musician on the local scene, straight outta Saskatchewan. Well, he’s also lived in the woods of Idaho, the oasis of Bear Springs in Arizona, and a coastal town in Mexico—seems his hippie ma raised her young Wolf amidst many communes. But she also thankfully exposed him to the music of Bob Marley, Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan, which resulted in a surprising talent today in Wolf’s mellow but infectious vibe and sound akin to Jack Johnson and with a little Citizen Cope thrown in. Now Wolf has his own studio in which he produced his debut CD, along with bandmate Eric Devine, who handcrafted the guitars, ukuleles and stand-up bass that are featured on the album. The ambitious duo also started a record label, Blockplane Records. This weekend, check out Wolf, as he’s joined by DeVine on bass and Rick Tyner on guitar and piano. For more info, visit www.micahwolf.com. No cover.

[DJ FEST.] I have some good news and some bad news. I’ll get the bad out of the way first. Summer is almost over (sigh). Which brings me to the good news (hooray!). Thanks to SunnLounge and Love-n-Light productions, your coolest summer vacation story doesn’t have to be how you made out to Hoobastank’s “The Reason” last week at the MACC. This Saturday, the local promoters are hosting an all-day, free DJ showcase at the old Kalama Park pavilion. At least seven DJs (from everywhere from Maui to Oregon to the Midwest) will be waxing poetic on a selection of reggae/dub, tech house funk, and break beats for your aural pleasure. Featured spinners include (in order of appearance) Alf, Tobin, Tim Dawg, Heavy Kev, Daniel J, Sal, and Max. Word around the campfire is that there may also be appearances by local bands and fire dancers. If for no other reason, come down to get the Hoobastank out of your head. [COREY NIELSEN]

[FILM, FOOD, MUSIC] This free, outdoor, under-the-stars festival features no less than nine award-winning Polynesian films, live music and food booths. Movies include: The Land Has Eyes, Wa’a Ho’olaule’a (Festival of Canoes), Rolling Down Like Pele, Ipo Le Manu, Dreams of a Pagan Tattooed Savage, Fishbowl Project, The Red Hibiscus, Ki Ho’alu, Keola Beamer (Paniolo Version) and Passing the Gift: Malama Honokowai. Live music by 2006 Grammy-winning George Kahumoku, Kipe Ebana, Atu, 2006 Hoku Lifetime Achievement honoree Herb Ohta-San, Kristen Toda & Po’okela Wood, Tony Gamble, Zenshin Daiko Taiko Drummers, and Uncle “Boy” Kanae as Master of Ceremonies. For more info, visit www.mauifest.net or call 573-5530. Campbell Park is located on Front Street, between Wharf Cinema Center and Baldwin Home Museum.

DAY

[FILM] This week’s Maui Film Festival selection, Kinky Boots, is about ingenuity, inspiration and finding your niche in PVC. When a shoe company that makes functional shoes starts to go under, the owner decides to change the product… to shoes fit for a drag queen. Bring on the 6” heels, glitter and zippers. I’ve always been a strong believer in fetish footwear. If strapping on a pair of fuck-me boots made of vinyl is wrong, then I don’t want to be right! Get there early to enjoy a glass of wine. It’ll give your feet a break before you go up all of the stairs for the good seats. $10. [HEIDI KING]

AUGUST 10, 2006

The questionable concept of mixing ballet with hip-hop dance moves is explored only as far as Line Dance choreography will allow in a clichériddled romance movie that coasts on the strength of its two charismatic leads Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. Tyler Gage (Tatum— Supercross) is a Baltimore ghetto hood sent to do community service at the city’s Maryland School of the Arts for his involvement in trashing the school’s stage facility with his carthief friends. Cupid’s arrow flies when Tyler

offers to stand in as a dance partner to ballerina Nora (Dewan) to assist in her upcoming senior showcase. Nora’s fickle nature and Tyler’s lack of discipline threaten to sabotage the couple’s romance even as Tyler’s ghetto reality takes a heavy toll on his sense of desperation. Tyler is a white kid growing up in a black ghetto where he squanders his time stealing cars and hustling cash with his best friend Mac (Damaine Radcliff) and Mac’s feisty little brother Skinny (De’Shawn Washington). At the top of the film the three friends are goofing around one night when Skinny breaks a window on the ground level of a large building and

disappears inside. Tyler and Mac follow the boy and walk the empty halls of what turns out to be an arts school. In one of the most telling scenes of the movie the three boys discover the school’s auditorium and begin trying on various costumes that send them into an oblivious reverie of vandalism. Not only do these kids have no respect

for private property, but they also have no regard for the arts. A security guard arrives and Tyler allows himself to be caught so that Mac and Skinny can escape. Once he’s sentenced to serve community service as a janitor at the school that he vandalized Tyler soon trades in his mop for a girlfriend. It’s a glaring pothole in the story that Tyler so effortlessly casts off his court appointed janitorial duties in lieu of dancing with Nora, but it’s the silly dance sequences that send the movie into a tailspin like a hummingbird with motion sickness. Choreographer-turned-director Anne Fletcher (choreographer on Bring It On) makes an obvious mistake in choreographing the dancing in her directorial debut. Step Up, as the film’s title vaguely illustrates, is a story about dance. It has a skeletal narrative template from Romeo and Juliet to underscore what should be a celebration of cultural sharing between the highbrow discipline of ballet with the street dance form of hip-hop. However the screenwriters (Duane Adler and Melissa Rosenberg) neglect to outline the stern prejudices that exist between the vastly different styles of dance. Step Up is a weak movie because it barely touches the surface of its primary subjects, dance and the inner city struggle of both impoverished and privileged teens. No one in the story tries hard enough, and neither did the filmmakers. MTW

Herb, Heartbreak, Hookups and God Versatile is five bands in one

RADIOHEAD TIE: “THE BENDS,” “OK COMPUTER” AND “KID A” I spent three grand last month to fly to California, just to see them play. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Their onstage energy, confidence and virtuosity were seared into my brain. These CD’s include a first in the history of music—three consecutive albums with not one throwaway song. Do yourself a favor and go buy them. Right now. You can finish reading this column later. Warning: music this good might not have been made by humans.

Versatile Friday, Aug. 18 at Charley’s in Paia.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: You guys represent haole, Filipino, Hawaiian and Japanese cultures. How does that work? DAYTON: Everyone’s Asian in the band. Sunday and Kendall are just Caucasian! SUNDAY: We’ll play a gig and I’ll be the only white guy anywhere. It’ll be all good for Kendall [the band’s only female] but I’m like… Everyone sings and plays multiple instruments. Is it difficult getting organized? ALIKA: Not really. Everyone brings his own flavor. Usually whoever brings a song will sing on that song. Does that work well live? ALIKA: Yeah, we’ll play five songs and sound like five different bands. And every set list is different, so people don’t get bored. How was the band started? DAYTON: At first it was just a conspiracy to get chicks. Most of us are from Lahainaluna. We just started hanging out, playing the ‘uke. Now you have eight members—but no cowbell. Maybe I could join? DAYTON: That’s actually how Alika started. Just hanging around with a huge smile on his face! SUNDAY: The great thing is, if someone’s sick or has to work it’s like, “The show must go on.” Who’s the funniest member of the band? ALIKA: Sunday’s the funniest looking! KAWIKA: I’m the prick of the band. ALIKA: Yeah, he’s the bitch! SUNDAY: He’ll call you out onstage if you fuck up.

Top Five CD’s by Bands I’ve Seen Live By Corey Nielsen

Considering that Versatile was formed in 2001 and have been playing their infectious brand of roots reggae live all over Maui ever since, it’s surprising they’ve managed to keep such a low profile. They also acquired the coveted Monday night slot at the Hard Rock Café during the month of August, while Marty Dread was on tour.

Speaking recently with Sunday, Kawika Cosma, Dayton Lum and Alika Ikeda—band mates Josh Lum, Kendall Easterly, Keoni Dapitan and Kalani Dapitan couldn’t attend—I was struck by the band’s humor, talent, humility and, um, versatility:

EAR SHOT

LED ZEPPELIN While looking for the entrance to Sunday’s house, I encountered a serious-looking Kawika and thought, “Either this guy’s gonna lump me out, or he’s in the band.” SUNDAY: Yeah, but Veeks is the soul of the band. Before each show, we all pray together. DAYTON: Yeah, and if we don’t, that show sucks. A lot of your lyrics mention the ganj. DAYTON: We’re all inspired in different ways. There’s songs about herb, heartbreak, hookups, and inspiration from above. During your cover of Israel Vibration’s “What’s the Use,” a beautiful collaboration of female-sounding voices can be heard singing background vocals. Who’s that? DAYTON: That’s us. We tried to sound masculine but said, “Fuck it!” Your songs have been featured on Q103, KPOA and “Da Jam.” But you have yet to record a CD, and seem disinterested in the business side of music. SUNDAY: People say, “It’s not about the money.” For us it’s really not. ALIKA: Nobody takes any money, it goes right back into the band. It’s just good fun being in a band. At work, it makes it easier to get through the day knowing that you’re going to play a show. But it’d be nice to travel, release a CD, and hopefully make a name for ourselves. How were the Hard Rock crowds? DAYTON: They were sick! There was a line behind the line! Word of mouth gets around quick. ALIKA: Gotta give a shout-out to the soldiers that come to all the shows. Coming eight strong in a truck, each throwing in $3 for gas. Just call ‘em soldiers, they know who they are. Any interest in kidnapping Marty Dread and taking his regular Monday slot? SUNDAY: Nah, because then you become a coin band. You know, put in a coin and play that song! MTW

“LED ZEPPELIN” Sure, technically I only saw Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. But I was still rockin’ the Huggies when John Bonham died. And they did hurl down three hours of classic Zeppelin from the heavens. The hardest thing about including Zeppelin is choosing just one album. Throw a dart at any record and you’ll hit one of about eight impossibly brilliant songs. I picked the first album for no explainable reason, other than that upon its release, it was annihilated by critics. But what the hell do we know?

PRINCE “THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE” I was fortunate enough to see Prince at the MACC a few years ago, and I’ve never had my world so thoroughly rocked. He basically ripped my mind out by the roots. Maximum brain rototillage. I missed his aftershow performance at Hapa’s with Willie K. though—my friend insisted we go to a house party in Spreckelsville instead. I had no choice, she was my ride. Unforgivable. Do I need a reason for this one? How about the first nine tracks: “I Wanna be Your Lover,” “1999,” “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s go Crazy,” “Purple Rain,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Raspberry Beret” and “Kiss.” The guitar solo at the end of “Purple Rain” alone makes omitting this impossible.

NEIL YOUNG “DECADE” I agonized the most over this spot. Would it be Young, Tom Petty or the Violent Femmes? In the end, I went with the album that accompanied me on many a long road trip across Northern California. It includes “Cinnamon Girl,” “Southern Man,” “Ohio,” “Old Man,” Heart of Gold,” “The Needle and the Damage Done,” “Like a Hurricane” and one of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs ever, “Cortez the Killer.” No “Hey Hey, My My” or “Rockin’ in the Free World?” So what, how much do you expect of one man in one decade? People booed when Eddie Vedder got sick at a Pearl Jam concert and Young stepped in. I couldn’t believe my good fortune.

PEARL JAM “NO CODE” The sentimental choice, Eddie Vender & Co. was the first concert I ever saw. An unforgettable initiation, complete with stage diving and crowd surfing (sorry, but it was 1993). Ten was actually the album that first awakened me to music other than Def Leppard and Milli Vanilli (both of whom I loved), but this is their most underappreciated and soulful work. “Hail, Hail” is classic rocking Pearl Jam and “In my Tree” and “Smile” are among the most sublime songs ever recorded by anyone. I’m sure all three were omitted from the lame “Greatest Hits” collection. MTW

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Go ahead and wear a crown this week. Ruling the world (or even your small part of it) actually isn’t that much fun, at least if it’s done right. It’s more responsibility than you’d prefer, and the demands on you are never-ending. Still, you got yourself into this position, and there’s no shirking it now. So don that heavy crown, fix a grin on your face (finding a way to laugh, at least privately, at your troubles is far better than being made miserable by them), and get to your royal work.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I dreamt I was climbing Everest, but woefully underdressed. My companion, similarly unprepared for such a venture, was criminally unworried by our precarious and probably lethal situation. Eventually, I was forced to choose—either ditch her or suffer with her. I chose to share her fate, and was glad I did— when I awoke. You too may face a decision between what’s sensible and what’s sentimental. I know which you’d normally choose; this week, however, consider the emotional option, even if it doesn’t make much rational sense. It’s better for your soul.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Smile and the whole world smiles with you. It’s true, at least to some extent, this week; your mood—whatever it is—is powerfully contagious at the moment. So, for everyone’s sake, try to stay upbeat. You know: all the usual focus-on-the-bright-side crap. But please don’t pretend to be happy when you’re not; it won’t work. Try to actually feel happy. Even if your life is shit at the moment, there’s got to be something to feel good about. Focus, please, on that.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re like a radiator, only what you’re putting out isn’t heat. It’s not even your usual frequency (sexual energy). Weirdly, it’s more like healing. I’m not saying you could start restoring blind people’s sight with your hands or magically whip up a cure for AIDS, but there is something subtly helpful about you right now for those who are suffering. Keep in mind: your vibe is beneficial, but no cure-all. You’re more like chicken soup than antibiotics. Nevertheless please visit those in need of a little comfort this week. You’re so good at providing it right now that it’d be almost criminal of you not to.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Help others. That’s this week’s motto. A buddy of yours is moving house? Get right on it. A depressed friend’s kitchen desperately needs scrubbing and tidying? Please do it. Your neighbors are building an addition to their house? Grab your hammer. This is an excellent time to pick up some good karma credit, not least because there are so many people around you at the moment who could use your skills. This is not about just racking up favors to cash in on later, though. It’s about doing something generous and helpful just for how good it makes you (and them) feel, and because it’s right.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Most Capricorns are horrified by excess. The idea of swimming in a vat of chocolate—no matter how much of a chocoholic you may be—is so grotesque it could put you off sweets of all kinds forever. Unfortunately this week nothing’s likely to present itself in the right amounts, be it affection, sex, fun, work, or money. What can you do? Not a whole lot. Just get through it. Try to enjoy the gluts as much as possible while enduring the shortages as cheerfully as you can. My only comfort: this feast or famine scenario will only last a few more days.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) This week’s Full Moon in your sign is likely to give you the idea that it’s the perfect time to reveal hidden feelings and just generally let people know how much they’re loved by you. Go ahead and do it if you like but don’t raise your expectations about what kind of responses you’ll get. Most people will be pleasantly surprised but a little shocked—and unlikely to spontaneously reciprocate your feelings. Still, sharing your love shouldn’t (at least not always) be about what you’ll get in return. I say do it anyway, and to hell with whether it comes back to you or not.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20 I love that quiet period after you’ve overcome your own resistance to a task, eliminated all other delays and obstacles, and you can just settle in for some steady, focused work. This week, unfortunately, will be completely devoid of any of this kind of productive and peaceful time. There are just too many stumbling blocks. Next week’s better, though; you should have plenty of big chunks of time in which you can actually get things done—as long as you spend this week getting rid of anything that could get in your way later, instead of waiting until then to see if it does. You deal with problems like they’re rats. You spot one, you kill it. But sometimes there are simply so many that you can’t tackle them all, let alone assess where the hell they’re coming from. This week’s strategy may involve doing something counterintuitive: ignoring your most pressing-seeming difficulties (like the rat right in front of you) in order to track down their origins. If you can stop them at the source, you’ll be much better off than if you have to deal with them, one by one, once they’ve had time to grow, reproduce and spread.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I dreamt that Third World aboriginals were being coerced by massive corporations to present live infomercials to travelers, along with their native art forms. I woke up horrified and repulsed, knowing that someone, somewhere, has probably already thought of this and is trying to think of a way to make it viable. Corporations are fantastic at taking advantage of people’s desperation and need. Taureans, however, are not. You are, in fact, the cure for such greed. When you see the defenseless getting trampled by the unscrupulous, please help them. You’re strong enough, and what’s more—possibly the only one who can.

Whatever. That’s your probable response to this horoscope, or virtually anything else you encounter this week. You’re tired of getting worked up about things. You’re sick of being stressed out. So you’ve stopped caring. It’s understandable. But you should still beware of this curious apathy that’s settled over you. Sure, it could shield you from a lot of life’s stresses at the moment, but it could also damage your life in other areas, like your relationship(s). Is a little numbness worth all the havoc it will wreak? Give a shit, would you? Even if it’s hard. It’ll be easier on you in the long run, I promise.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Your usual allies may abandon you in droves this week seemingly just because it’s the “in” thing to do. This, just after something (a party, perhaps?) that made you feel popular and loved, might feel like a betrayal of sorts, but it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. It’s almost certainly not personal—more a reflection of how fickle some of your acquaintances might be. Don’t cut those capricious associates out of your life, though, despite the temptation. They’re not even worth the effort of ignoring them. Trusting them again, however, is a different story.

Men often say, ‘Women! Who could ever understand them?’ Don’t ask a lesbian for the answer. All you’ll get is a sympathetic nod. – Joanne Brigden I had my first girl crush in the tenth grade, on an artsy senior named Natalie. She was a lead actor in the Thespian Club, very popular and extremely beautiful. Like, Angelina Jolie/Rosario Dawson beautiful but with Siouxsie Sioux make-up, crimped bangs sprayed eight inches high and a patched black trenchcoat she wore daily, even in Las Vegas’ scorching heat. Although I was a mere sophomore, Natalie was always nice to me—greeting me in the hallway with an exuberant “Hey, cutie!” to which I would smile shyly and then look behind me to see if she was talking to someone else. I had heard from someone at school that Natalie was “bisexual”—a lifestyle we associated at the time with the androgynous singers of the goth-rock bands we loved but a term used casually by only the coolest of cool, older kids in fringe circles. None of my closest friends would claim it, or even knew that it meant anything beyond making particular hair, wardrobe and accessory choices. All I knew is that Natalie exuded sexy confidence and it scared the hell outta me. With a sly grin, she’d watch me watching her smoke with such cool finesse in the quad while the rest of the mods, punks and drama kids passed cloves and cigarette lighters to each other. Often she’d wave for me to come over. But I could never say more than two words to her. I couldn’t even begin to contemplate what would happen if I did. When I moved to Santa Cruz after high school, I discovered that the bisexual tag had made a precarious comeback amongst the “curious,” sexually experimenting young women attending university—“queer before graduation” became almost cliché. But I experienced none of that, as I remained in a monogamous, heterosexual relationship throughout college. Back then it was a fairly common novelty for chicks (and still is, apparently, according to the Girls Gone Wild videos) to engage in pseudo-lesbian shenanigans—drinking until they could make out with each other in front of a crowd of straight male onlookers. But there were also many of my collegiate friends who headed to gay clubs, and Women’s Studies classes, for bona fide Sapphic action. Meanwhile, my boyfriend repeatedly suggested that I do a little experimenting as well—as long as I brought enough home to share. But I was still much too inhibited to instigate such a notion. And although Santa Cruz had a prominent gay and lesbian community, no woman ever hit on me. I felt so unwanted. It wasn’t until after I graduated, and the relationship with Mr. Greedy was over, that it finally happened. Of course at this point I was kinda over the whole “sexually curious” thing. But I figured I might as well give it a go. And then gleefully tell my ex all about it. Aside from the excitement of doing something slightly “naughty,” I felt pretty unemotional about the whole thing. Much like the first time I had hetero-sex, I was just pleased I had gotten the experience out of the way so I could move on. And I remember having a renewed appreciation for how guys actually figure out how to do these things and make us women feel so good. Props to my lesbian sistahs, too. It’s certainly not as easy as it looks. It actually takes quite a bit of patience, creativity and a good deal of work. For all my mindless hedonism, some things made me realize I am quite the traditionalist at heart. Unfortunately, the girl I hooked up with didn’t feel the same way. Instead of the strong, independent woman I had met, she quickly became frail, vulnerable, clingy and manipulative. Suddenly, I was the asshole saying things like, “It’s not you, it’s me,” “I think you’re great but this just isn’t going to work out” and “Everything was cool until she got all psycho.” It was disturbing but the biggest thing I got from the whole experience was that I actually gained a new respect for guys and everything we put them through. I saw myself with new eyes. And I felt empowered with the knowledge that I would never again put some dude through that needy, girly bullshit. Women are amazingly beautiful, sexy, intelligent, highly demanding beings. I know because I am one. But I also know I’m much happier to be wonderfully frustrated by men and all their fabulously stupid ways.
