I hope you know what an idiot you have working for you in Editor Anthony Pignataro. COMET’s proposed property tax charter amendment will be disastrous for Maui, if passed by the voters (Coconut Wireless, July 27, 2006). Here’s why! It is simple math. If you cut taxes, then you have to cut county services. So here is the question: which county services would you like to see cut? Which county parks and swimming pools should we close and how many police officers and firemen should we layoff? Should we stop building new county roads and infrastructure? How much should we cut back on grants to such organizations as the Maui Humane Society, Maui Economic Opportunity, Community Work Day and other worthy organizations? Should we stop salary increases for county employees or maybe even reduce their salaries? We have a perfectly good property tax system right now which has a $300,000 exemption for homeowners plus a low rate which make our property taxes some of the lowest in the nation. Just to install the new system would cost a lot of money to write up all new software and to hire the new personnel in the finance department to implement and maintain it. The housing bubble has popped now and home values are declining. Would you like to have your assessment frozen at the top? If someone asks you to sign the petition, ask them which county services they want to cut! -Bob Babson, Kihei

I know of no one who has not been impacted by and complains about traffic on Maui (“Moratorium Time?” June 22, 2006). Especially during

rush hour. It’s such a waste of gas and although time in traffic can be well spent, you know we’d rather not be in traffic. It can take over an hour to get from Kahului to Lahaina, a distance of about 25 miles; or south Maui to Kahului, which is only about 12 miles. We’re probably using up more gas idling in bumper to bumper traffic than moving. Personally, I don’t think more roads is the answer. We do need more roads, but those will quickly fill up with traffic too. I have another idea to suggest. In the corporate world it’s called flex time. Basically, it’s an adjusted schedule. A lot of Maui’s traffic problem is caused by everyone trying to get someplace at the same time. What if only half the people trying to get someplace no longer needed to get there at that same time? What would happen if teachers and students didn’t need to get to school until 9 a.m.? What if school was 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., instead of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.? How might that alter morning traffic jams? What if we tended our shops, conducted our business and, basically, had “day time” work routines at night? If half the people who work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. could change to working 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., it may not drastically reduce rush hour traffic, but it sure would help. Maybe some day soon, private business and government agencies will allow employees to have this kind of flex time. Freedom is flexibility, not adherence to a social convention or system of habit. If a large enough number of parents simply refuse to bring their children to school until 9 a.m. due to the extra cost of idle gas time (and a higher safety risk) of transportation at “rush” hour, then so be it. After all, parents are taxpayers and, thereby, part owners of “the system”—complete with all the responsibilities of ownership. -Ken Fields, Wailuku

But apparently not. You know, I drove around half of Maui with a bag of AAs trying to find out where I could get rid of them. Literally not one person I found knew where I could dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. After persistent questioning at the dump I finally found out that a certain department store would properly dispose of them. So I went there and asked the first clerk I saw what I could do with my used batteries. “On Maui, we throw those into the trash,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “But that’s very bad for the environment!” I told him. “Yeeah, I know,” he said, still shrugging his shoulders. Thanks for nothing.

It was a copy of a public notice that ran in The Maui News a few weeks ago, alerting residents to a hearing on the department’s infamous Card Everyone Who Wants To Buy Booze rule. The hearing will take place after the usual licensing matters discussed during commission’s Sept. 13, 2006 meeting. The rule’s been on the books for years, but only recently has attracted widespread popular and media attention—mostly from senior citizens outraged that they have to show identification before getting their cocktail. Many island stores, bars and restaurants have been fined thousands of dollars each for getting caught in sting operations designed to see if clerks and servers routinely check patron IDs. Commissioner Ron McOmber asked Silva if holding this hearing would “quell” the growing opposition to the rule. “Oh, yeah,” Silva said. He then told the panel that his office hasn’t received a lot of complaints, but has heard from hotels asking about the rule. He said he’s also told some who call complaining to put their thoughts in writing in lieu of coming to the hearing. It’s unclear how much spoken or written testimony the Liquor Commission—which approves all county liquor rules—will take into account when they start discussing the rule. Probably not a lot, given the commission’s general distaste toward the whole controversy in the first place. Commissioner Frances Meshulam asked if the panel would be limiting testimony from citizens to just three minutes each—a perfectly legal though nonetheless questionable rule. “Definitely,” Moniz said, smiling.

Tourism? JOSEPH ZUIKER: My life experiences are as rich and broad as any of the candidates. As are my abilities to form opinions and make decisions. I worked in Washington, D.C. I was in the Peace Corps, I’ve traveled extensively. And I’m 64, I’ll be eligible for medicare soon! I’m painfully aware of the homeless problem and I’m different from the others in that I don’t take money from anyone (Zuiker won’t accept political contributions in excess of $200). My main goal is for people to visit my website (www.joezuikerforcongress.com) and actually hear my ideas. What’s the biggest problem facing your district? Thinking that it’s different from any other district in the country. We have the same problems. We are not alone. We’re getting old. We need Social Security. We’ve been stuck with a $9 trillion dollar debt. And $3 trillion has been added since the “family values” guys got elected. We need to have money for disasters.

What are your feelings on Hawaiian Sovereignty? I was in favor of the Akaka Bill. I thought at least it would rightfully preserve their [the Hawaiians’] money. I used to visit the Navajo nation in Arizona. A true sovereign nation. And I personally don’t believe there’ll ever be a sovereign nation here. Historically that just doesn’t happen. But my question to Hawaiians is this: Why not register to vote? Take over the government. Get all kinds of people in there. With the government comes the right to spend money. And the door is wide open. Right the injustices in practical ways. What do you think of the Superferry?

What do you intend to do about this problem? My whole campaign is about balancing burdens and benefits. First of all, we need to get out of Iraq no later than Jan. 1, 2007. We have to break our addiction to earmarks, which only serve to get congressmen re-elected. We need to get honest about budgeting. Congress needs to stop stealing money from Medicare and Social Security. Stop pork barrel spending. As I like to say, “Don’t bring home the bacon if it’s not on sale.”

I wonder what it’ll be like in 20 to 30-foot waves! But I support increased transportation. Airline prices have affected family unity. Maybe this’ll be a way to get back to visit Grandma. George W. Bush? When he finally leaves, I see major hassles over documents being destroyed. One of our worst presidents ever, in my book.

Going into the Peace Corps, getting dumped four miles from the Haitian border. Or being the first from my family to go to law school. What’s the last book you read? I’m reading Bob Woodward’s Plan of Attack now. And I just finished Assassin’s Gate, about how we blundered into Iraq. These people [the current administration] will be the McNamaras of our time, saying, “Oh, I guess we made a mistake.” What’s your favorite thing about Maui? I once camped on Haleakala and almost froze to death during a winter storm. I had some great experiences with my mom and dad at the Kaanapali resort. And I’ve represented some brave people on Maui. But I always miss the beaches—I’ve been jogging past all of them, campaigning!

Is Maui Land & Pineapple so powerful that they actually own the old Hawaiian name “Kapalua?” They seem to think so: according to the Pacific Business News, the company is suing Oregon-based Golf Gateways Ltd., saying that company’s “Kapaluagolf.com” website infringes on the name “Kapalua Land Co.,” which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Maui Land. Golf Gateways denies any infringement, saying that “Kapalua” is just the name of a place. “I feel like Maui Land & Pineapple Co. is trying to use its financial clout to force small guys like us into submission, and I won’t do that,” company president Bernd Reumann told PBN. Now I’m not an attorney, but if Maui Land should win, they might want to contact the people who publish the book Place Names of Hawaii and The Ready Mapbook of Maui County (2nd Edition). Both are filled with references to “Kapalua,” and don’t seem to have any copyright notice anywhere. MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle says on her official Linda Lingle for Governor website (www.lindalingle.com) about her record in office so far: “We have made great strides in restoring trust and integrity in government… [and] prepared for natural or man-made emergencies.”

What she didn’t say: One of the great things about political propaganda is that a politician—incumbent or otherwise—can say virtually anything during a campaign and get away with it. Lingle insists that her administration “prepared” the state for natural emergencies like hurricanes, floods or, oh, let’s just say dam bursts. For instance, some people might say that the state Department of Land and Natural Resources should have inspected the Kaloko Dam on Kauai—an earthen dam dating to the 1890s—at some point in its history, which ended when it burst on March 14, 2006 during heavy rains, killing seven people. Had the DLNR formulated a comprehensive dam inspection plan—it has since looked at every dam in the state—who knows whether such a tragedy could have been prevented.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 9 Somehow, whether by accident or vast conspiracy, Democratic Congressman Ed Case managed to get on the same stage as U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i). This went down at the Aug. 8 Hawai’i Publishers Association luncheon and it was apparently stunning to see. See, Case has been complaining almost since the day he declared he would run for the Senate that Akaka was refusing to debate him. That’s why it was so great that they both went to the luncheon: there, Case could—and did, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser—say that Akaka is old and ineffective, and Akaka could get all folksy and say we should honor our kupuna. Hey, this is important, people! But only until the Primary Election on Sept. 23. See, Jerry Coffee, the former Vietnam War POW, Midweek columnist and current front-runner for the Republican nomination, just checked into some hospital in Texas for emergency heart surgery. His son told the Associated Press that Coffee is expected to recover and will stay on the ballot, but won’t be doing any more campaigning. Hawai’i Republicans are funny people—they’ve got a lock on the Governor’s Mansion, but not much else.

THURSDAY, Aug. 10 Land development on Maui has literally become a sickness. Yesterday Judge Joseph Cardoza ruled that the county is not to issue any approvals or permits for the Maui Lani subdivisions in Kahului and Wailuku because the Mayor’s office should never have allowed the developer to grade the land in excess of county code. In a Maui News article today, Cardoza denied that he’d be issuing development permits from the bench, but really—given the Planning Department we’ve got now, would that be so bad? Even the Maui Planning Commissioners are kinda/sorta half-heartedly saying that something’s gotta be done about all this traffic that just keeps getting worse. In fact, they even started ripping into the Hyatt and its consultant

Chris Hart at their Tuesday hearing. “This is a collective problem that involves not just this project,” Hart told the commission. He’s exactly right. The choking, strangling West Maui traffic is a collective problem, and demands a collective solution: a moratorium on all new land development. Call it tough love for our beloved officials—just as if they were alcoholics in denial, we must carefully pull the bottle out of the their hands so they can’t drink anymore. It’ll be difficult—the developers will bitch and moan like you wouldn’t believe, but it’ll be worth it. If the developers complain to the county, they’ll hear that the moratorium will come off when the state starts building some highways or high-speed rail lines—anything that will alleviate some of that congestion. My guess is things will start happening fairly soon after that.

Case and Akaka “are running even with 43 days left to the primary election.” According to Case’s email, a survey of 500 likely Hawai’i voters shows 47 percent are for Akaka, 45 percent for Case and eight percent are undecided, with a 4.5 percent error rate. That’s huge! That’s crazy! That’s… probably bogus. See, the poll was done by Rasmussen Reports, which is notorious in the political campaign world for being less than reliable. See, they conduct polls using what they call “automated polling methodology”—or put another way, a computer calls people up and asks them polling questions. Since a human being never asks the questions, there’s no way for the company to be certain who’s exactly answering the questions. This might explain why other polls in which one human being interviewed by other human beings show Akaka leading Case by as many as 20 percentage points. Anyway, the respected Capitol Hill paper Roll Call, the Associated Press and CNN refuse to report automated polling results. I’m writing about the Rasmussen results here because otherwise, no one would ever know about the poll or its inherent problems. I mean, the local press around here is rather gullible, but not nearly so much to fall for a stunt like this.

SATURDAY, Aug. 12 Doh! Just opened up today’s Honolulu Advertiser and found a story headlined “Polls show Akaka still ahead of Case.” Seems that a “national polling firm released poll results yesterday that found that U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka holds a slight edge over U.S. Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary for Senate among all likely voters…” Yeah, I’m shocked, too.

SUNDAY, Aug. 13 There’s a far better—and scarier—story in the Advertiser today about the unknown but undoubtedly high number of unexploded bombs, artillery shells and torpedoes that litter our islands and waters. See, Maui is covered in the junk, which mostly dates to World War II. It’s all over the old Makawao Gunnery Site, Kamaole Training Base in Kihei and ‘Opana Point Bombing Range, as well as Kanouou Point, Kanahena Point and even the Molokini Crater. Of course the federal government hasn’t put nearly enough money into cleanup, so it’s likely we won’t find out where the old explosives are around here until commercial and residential development starts encroaching on the old ranges.

MONDAY, Aug. 14 Whoa! The Maui News editorializes today that something radical really needs to be done about traffic—light rail radical, to be exact: “A rail system [running from Kahului to Kapalua] built privately or publicly or in partnership, could take hundreds of tourist cars off the road each day, make commuting a breeze and avoid throwing millions of dollars into asphalt that would be jammed by cars the day after it’s down.” That sounds like an outstanding idea, though it’s doubtful it would happen anytime soon—certainly not soon enough to help when all those new timeshare towers start opening in North Beach next year.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES In July, Cory Neddermeyer, 42, was turned down for unemployment benefits in Iowa, after a judge ruled that he was fired for cause. His employer, the Amaizing Energy ethanol plant, suffered a massive spill that created a pond of fuel alcohol. Neddermeyer, a recovering alcoholic, after resisting as long as he could, began drinking from the pool. He eventually passed out and later registered a 0.72 blood-alcohol reading.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY The District of Columbia government’s payroll for 2005, reported by the Washington Times in July, included 1,268 employees paid over $100,000 a year (including 43 over $150,000 a year). The figures for Baltimore (with a slightly larger population) were 55 and two, respectively, and Chicago, with five times the population of D.C., still had fewer employ-

ees in both categories. In fact, even though the D.C. workforce has shrunk by 2,000 workers since 2002, the annual payroll has increased by $180 million.

New York state Sen. Ada Smith, known as the “Wild Woman of Albany” for her temper, pleaded not guilty in April for yet another outburst, this time assaulting a staff member with hot coffee after a comment about Smith’s weight. According to Senate officials cited by the New York Daily News, over the years more than 200 of her staff members have either quit or been fired. Besides Smith’s previous run-ins with Albany police, New York City police and United Airlines, other former employees have claimed that she assaulted them—the latest being a woman who said Smith threw a phone at her. Smith has denied virtually every accusation, but her exasperated Senate party leader has stripped Smith of seniority privileges.

And self-described “pro-traditional family” candidate Jim Galley lost a two-man June congressional primary in San Diego, with no help from the San Diego Union Tribune’s discovery a week before the voting that he had child-support payments garnisheed from his paycheck for four years and was once, for a 17-month period, married to two women.

Farewell Tour He had ballooned up to 750 pounds now, his massive bulk crushing his lungs, making it difficult to breathe. His face was swollen, his eyes almost shut, his angel voice raspy. Yet he sang his heart out for the people of Maui—the gang from Pukalani, folks from Kahakuloa, even the seniors from Hana (they came 52 miles by bus) who packed 1,200-seat Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului to see Israel one last time. He struggled through the concert. Seeing his energy flagging, Marlene worried backstage. No worry, a stagehand said, Maui Memorial just around the corner. It was not his best performance. Nobody complained. Israel sang the same songs at every concert. Nobody noticed. Sometimes he didn’t sing all the words. Nobody cared. He paused often to ad-lib, catch his breath, wave to folks. He spotted Uncle Charles Maxwell up in the balcony, waved him a shaka, called out: “Uncle Chaus, you there, I love you bradda.” “I answered him back, ‘We love you, too, Brudda Iz,’” Maxwell said. In between songs, little rest stops, Israel called out to others, saying aloha: hello, I love you, good-bye. “He wanted to go around the islands one last time,” Marlene said. “He wanted me to dance.” She became his caretaker and nurse as his days dwindled. He had only 75 days to live. After Maui, Israel flew home, out of breath, checked into the Queens Medical Center. It wasn’t called his farewell tour; that’s just how it turned out. “Three weeks after the concert I went to Queens to see him and again he told me how much he love me and said, ‘Uncle, no cry, it’s a better place there. I going fly, promise,’” said Maxwell. “That was the last time I saw him alive.” -RC

remember the bombs falling on Kaho’olawe the summer of 1976. I could see them every night that summer from Ben Keau’s little green plantation-style house in Kula on the slopes of Haleakala Crater. The air raids lit up the night like the Fourth of July. Ben Keau was the first person to tell me that the Navy, our Navy, was bombing one of the Hawaiian Islands. I didn’t believe him at first. “It’s true,” he said. “Look tonight.” And we did, and there it was—a time warp rerun of a World War II air battle. Only 12 miles away from where we sat, drinking cold Bud, on the lanai of Ben and Hilda’s house up in Kula, U.S. Navy planes dive-bombed the island. You could hear the concussions across the sea channel. I told people in California about the bombs falling in Hawai’i, but nobody believed me; what happened in Hawai’i was of no concern. Nobody in Hawai’i seemed too upset about the air raids, even after an errant, unexploded 500-pound Navy bomb was found in a West Maui sugarcane field—10 miles off bull’s-eye. That summer, while everyone in America celebrated the nation’s 200th birthday, nine native Hawaiians made the first of many landings on Kaho’olawe to protest the Navy’s use of the island as a bombing target. Nobody took them seriously, not even when they filed a federal lawsuit charging the United States Navy with violating laws of environment, historic preservation and religious freedom. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole turned 17 that summer and paid no heed to those festering issues; his mind was on surf, roast pork and rice, a certain girl named Marlene, and music. He and his older brother, Henry, 22, who everyone called Skippy, had started a backyard band, Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau, which began to attract a local following. “Israel was young, not interested, and very jokey,” Uncle Charles Maxwell recalled. “He was the one used to talk a lot onstage, and keep the group going, but when Hawaiian issues came up, Skippy really had a grasp of what the issues were about. Israel would make fun of everything.” That year, 1976, Skippy, caught up in Hawai’i’s emerging activism, began looking for a song of protest to record. While in Hilo one night for a gig, he met Mickey Ioane, who played in a band called, Da Blalahs of Keaukaha, a Hilo Bay neighborhood. “And they jammed all night long,” KCCN disc jockey Jacqueline Skylark Rossetti recalled. “Instead of flying home to Honolulu they stayed three more days, jamming with the boys of Keaukaha.” Moss green velvet reaches down to tide pools on this far shore of Hilo Bay, in stark contrast to the desert like Wai’anae Coast. The O’ahu boys from Mäkaha were captivated by the Eden-like nature and local hospitality.

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawai’i “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” “Hawai’i ‘78” turned Hawai’i’s state motto into a lyric over a traditional pahu beat, followed by a question: “If just for a day our king and queen/Would visit all these islands and saw everything. “How would they feel about the changes of our land? “Could you just imagine if they were around/And saw highways on their sacred grounds/How would they feel/about this modern city life? “Tears would come from each other’s eyes/As they would stop to realize/That our people are in great, great danger now.” “Hawai’i ‘78,” became the signature anthem for the Mäkaha Sons, Israel and a whole generation of Hawaiian activists. The bittersweet refrain still makes all who love Hawai’i weep. “Cry for the gods, cry for the people/Cry for the land that was taken away/And then yet you’ll find, Hawai’i.” Uncle Charles recalls: “After they released

‘Hawaii ‘78’ I returned from Washington, D.C., and since I missed my flight to Maui, we went to Chuck’s Cellar, where the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau were playing. The minute we sat at our table, Skippy said, “Uncle Chaus, this song for you,” and they played ‘Hawaii ‘78.’ We really had a good cry, and when the song was over, he asked me to come up and talk about the Hawaiian movement. I spoke about how we were part of a suit to stop the bombing of Kaho’olawe. It was the first time I noticed Bradda Iz was really listening.” Smooth as the south swell in summer, their albums kept appearing, one almost every year, each one more popular than the last. The Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau appealed to a diversity of fans: young and old Hawaiians, kama’aina, tourists, ‘akamai folks who liked traditional Hawaiian music. The island band seemed destined to go on to attract a wider audience on the mainland. And then the worst thing happened. On October 1, 1982, Skippy died of a massive heart attack at the age of 28. Israel and the Makaha Sons were devastated. Without Skippy how could they continue? Skippy’s death plunged Israel into grief. “He got lost in himself,” Moe Keale said. Israel and the band took time to grieve and regroup. It would be two more years before they released a new album, Puana Hou Me Ke Aloha. “After Skippy died, the Makaha Sons became stronger, more determined to continue their music, their sound, carry on,” Skylark Rossetti said. It was slow going at first. Israel, lost without his brother, was not able to lead the band—book dates, keep dates, sign contracts, give interviews,

set rehearsals, arrange travel, pay bills—so Louis “Moon” Kauakahi took charge as group leader, arranger, and composer. “After Skippy passed away, I noticed Bradda Iz really involved in the Hawaiian movement,” Uncle Charles recalled. “Whenever I would be in the news, or on TV, he would call me and say, “Eh Uncle Chaus, right on.” Motivated to carry on his brother Skippy’s mission, Israel began to embody the spirit of the sovereignty movement. He turned “Hawaii ‘78” into an anthem and sang it every concert. “Cry for the people, cry for the land…” became his cry. Inspired by the times, the kolohe kid grew serious about the sorry state of Hawaiian affairs; his music mirrored the mood of the people. He gave voice to grievances, articulated concerns, recited demands for sovereignty, and stood up for his people. His shaka sign sometimes now became a clenched fist. e sang on the back of flatbed trucks, on the beach at Waikiki. At ease in Tahiti under thatch, he looked uncomfortable in faux Vegas (but loved the buffets). Israel went all around the Islands, performing at baby luau and halau fundraisers, singing in upcountry Maui, on Oahu’s windward side at Patís in Punalu’u. His favorite venues were Hawai’i-kine places like Makua Valley and Waimanalo, out in the country where roosters crow, pit bulls prowl chain-link fences and the Hawaiian flag flies

They seemed more like backyard parties than staged events. You never knew what Israel might say or do. He was a natural comedian—a kolohe, or clown, in local patois—but he had “one ‘nother” side, too. Hawaiian flag flew upside down. Land was being sold out from under Hawaiians who found themselves homeless, living under blue luau tents at Makua Beach and Makapu’u while new million-dollar high-rise condos poked skyward. Fishponds were bulldozed for a new Big Island fantasy resort; ancient burials were churned up for Hyatt Regency and Ritz Carlton beach hotels on Maui and Kauai. Workers bulldozed a woman’s heiau in sacred Halawa Valley to build a $1.4 billion 16-mile freeway that linked Pearl Harbor to the Marine Corps base in Kaneohe. In Wao Kele ‘O Puna rain forest, Oklahoma drillers tapped Pele’s fire pits, with plans to light Waikiki hotels with cheap electricity. Hawai’i began to change. Waikiki looked like Rodeo Drive crossed with Tokyo’s Ginza. Momand-pop stores closed, replaced by Gucci, Prada, Tiffany, and Louis Vuitton. Beach bungalows became gated mansions seldom occupied by absentee owners. Taxicabs became stretch limos. The Japanization of Hawai’i was underway. Even as Hawaiians began relearning their own language, signs in Japanese appeared on storefronts. As the centennial of the 1893 overthrow

Marches and demonstrations escalated. Kanaka maoli rallied at Iolani Palace, where Queen Lili’uokalani was dethroned. Demands for sovereignty and independence grew louder. “Last Star On/First Star Off!” t-shirts read. Israel kicked it up a notch. While he never stopped singing the galvanizing lyrics to “Hawai’i ’78” (“Cry for the gods Cry for the land Cry for the people”), he sang new protest songs in plain and simple English, which used words like “liberty” and “justice” and “free.” The songs, sung in his soaring voice over a haunting drumbeat, resonated among dissident Hawaiians and became anthems on the march to sovereignty. With his eye on future generations, Israel sang “Living in a Sovereign Land” as a demand.

He began with a little pidgin patter, some half-mumbled Hawaiian words, plinked his four-string ‘ukulele, and then, in that sweet, clear voice that shivered you, began singing: “Hene hene kou aka…” In between songs, he paused to goof around, say “‘owzit” to a friend he recognized

The songs were played over and again on radio stations in Hawai’i and beyond, introducing others to the plight and struggle of native Hawaiians. Israel’s clear voice and plain lyrics contributed to the wide and growing belief that a Hawaiian nation might become reality. In 1992, four native sons of Hawai’i—Israel, Roland Cazimero, Cyril Pahinui, and Henry Kapono—joined their voices in a sad ballad, “Broken Promise,” written by Kapono about the Hawaiian Homelands scandal that kept promised land from the people. “Broken Promise” won Single of the Year at the 1992 Hoku Awards. With four protest songs, Israel became the voice of the Hawaiian nation—“the Bob Marley of Hawai’i,” a New York music critic called him. MTW

Succulent Juices Visiting the world of tequilas Ah, tequila. A mere mention of the word can send chills of excitement down your spine, or a finger to your lips in horrified remembrance of hurls gone past. Rarely do people feel indifferent about the potent agave nectar. And yet, most folks really know so little about the stuff. Many of us are introduced to tequila through our ol’ buddy, José. Damn near every bar carries Cuervo Gold and 1800; after all, the José Cuervo Especial brand is the best-selling tequila in the world. But there are over 2,000 other options. So in honor of the popular Mexican holiday, Feast of the Assumption, on Aug. 15, I decided to investigate some of these options right here on Maui. What is this holiday about, you ask? I’d assume it’s some sort of Catholic indoctrination—Mary’s passage into heaven and all that. What does this have to do with tequila consumption? Not much. Anyway, since Aug. 15 falls on a Tuesday, and what with newspaperdom and our dastardly deadlines being as they are, I decided to celebrate on the prior Saturday. My companion and I had limited resources and time, but did manage to make a few surprising discoveries. On Maui, you will find your better tequila selections at places like Nachos Grande and Compadres on the Westside, Fred’s Mexican Cantina and Horhito’s down south, Mañana Garage in central Maui and Milagros on the North Shore. But if you find yourself in other establishments with that special hankering for el liquido loco— knowledge is power, mi amigos. And you’d be wise to get yourself tequileducated. Real tequila—not worm-bottomed mezcal—is made from the blue agave plant, a succulent native to specific regions in Mexico. As long as you veer from the lesser-quality “golds”—which are really just young bottlings with caramel color added to look like it’s older—the best tequila is 100 percent blue agave, and divided into three distinct categories based on aging. The blanco, or silver tequila, is aged up to a couple months in oak barrels, the reposado is aged about a year and the añejo is aged from one to three years. This aging process not only affects the color of the

tequila, but also the significance of the oak influence in the many layers of tequila’s complex flavor. I would say that blancos are best for mixing or shooting, while añejos are ideal for sipping, as you would a fine cognac. Reposados fall generally somewhere in between, and at least for me, often take the edge off of a bellyaching sweet-and-sour mix, making for a slightly smoother, spicier margarita. Patron Silver seems to be a popular blanco, although it pales in comparison to the Corazon, which my compañero and I found to be a suave, more “boutique-y” alternative to Patron’s mass-produced, highoctane kick. We also greatly enjoyed the light and buttery, chardonnay-like qualities of the Cazadores Reposado. And we came across a rare bottle of El Señor Reposado at Mañana Garage that we agreed possessed a “lovely nose and creamy finish,” prompting a discus-

sion comparing the language of tequila tastings with that of wine. El Tesoro Añejo was another strong contender, with its smooth, full-bodied, butterscotch flavor. Don Alvaro Añejo—which came in a sexy, Chanel-like, art deco bottle—offered a uniquely sweet undertone that reminded my friend of Bailey’s and burnt crème brulee. We hit a snag with Don Eduardo Añejo, which was smooth but displayed the subtle essence of ashtray, prompting me to imagine waking up in a dusty old bar in Mexico, sitting next to a pistol-packing hombre with a mega-machismo mustache and sombrero and not knowing how I got there. But sometimes you want to feel like that. The thing with tequila is, there’s one out there made especially for you and your particular palate. You just gotta keep sipping until you find it. MTW

Living Buddha Thursday, Aug. 17 through Friday, Aug. 25, island-wide [SPIRITUALITY] All over Maui we are reminded of the costs of greed and exploitation. Monolithic hotels dominate what were once sacred and beautiful lands. Traffic congests our roads and businesses, causing impatience and resentment towards our neighbors. The few natives that remain fight to keep alive the memory of their culture and heritage, while those most responsible for their exploitation drive shiny new Benzes, Beemers and Hummers, blissfully ignorant of the damages done. In this culture of increasing frustration, it gives hope that a man such as Master Yu Tian Jian still exists. Called a “living Buddha,” Master Jian is the only living master of the ancient Chinese Hanmi school of Esoteric Buddhism. Jian has dedicated his life to relieving the suffering of others despite experiencing tremendous suffering himself. As a youth, he was shot twice (once through the head) and stabbed 27 times. He overcame his violent past and became a leader of industry in Communist China before finding his true path. Now an enlightened being, he is a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and has authored a book on Hanmi Buddhism. Master Jian will be offering a series of free and paid public teachings and healings from August 17th through the 24th, with emphasis on utilizing Buddhist meditations and movements to calm the body and mind. Bettering one’s environment is a selfless act that is impossible without first bettering oneself. Master Yu Tian Jian is here to teach us to do just that. For the people who know who they are, what you put on the outside represents who you are on the inside. Storyteller/Monologist Miss Coco Peru is one such character. Tall and slender, with beautiful blue eyes and fiery red wig, this queen has starred in shows, appeared in films, and been heard on radio broadcasts. Alternative Education Losers teach each other Steve Pink’s directorial debut (he was the screenwriter on John Cusack’s great black comedy Grosse Point Blank) is a slight but punchy comedy of collegeaged misfits that starts out strong before slipping down a greasy narrative slope into a dull third act that denies most of the laughs that preceded. High school senior Bartleby (the squeaky clean kid from the Mac commercials—Justin Long) is a clever guy whose marginal grades provoke rejection letters from every college he applies to. Desperate for validation and approval from his dismissive parents (Ann Cusack and Mark Derwin) Bartleby brainstorms into existence a phony Ohio college that accepts him as a student.

I hated this class in college Bartleby’s increasingly ambitious college hoax necessitates that he and his fellow college reject pals lease and renovate a disused mental hospital to house the “South Harmon Institute of Technology,” which he presents as a “sister college” to the actual Harmon College a few blocks away. A glitch in the bogus college’s website unexpectedly attracts a hoard of slackers who install themselves in the dorm only campus. What started out as a façade for learning becomes an alternative education hub with a swimming pool and a skateboard half-pipe where the curriculum is devised and taught by the students. Because mainstream American counter-culture movies have barely existed for the past 20-plus years, Accepted comes with a desperate gasp for oxygen. The comic foundation is sound but the film’s execution stumbles because the screenwriters (Adam Cooper, Bill

Collage and Mark Perez) don’t link enough witty dialogue to the film’s spastic tone. The overall casting of novice actors contributes to the failure of the production. Jerry Zucker’s Rock ‘n Roll High School (1979) is a good example of a similarly themed movie that turned the rebellion of academic underachievers into comic and musical wealth, thanks in part to that venerable punk band the Ramones. There’s an inspired moment in Accepted when Bartleby jumps on stage with a band at a blowout party to take over singing duties for a version of the Ramones’ anthem “Blitzkrieg Bop.” Uncle Ben (Lewis Black) steals the movie as a fiercely blunt anti-authoritarian social renegade that Bartleby enlists as the Dean and sole faculty member of South Harmon Institute. Ben is the eccentric uncle of Bartleby’s best friend Sherman (Jonah Hill) who suffers humiliating

hazing rituals at the fraternity of his father and grandfather at the authentic South Harmon college. Sherman takes the brunt of the most jokes, but we never get enough of his personality to embrace him as the protagonist’s alter ego. Accepted falls short of its zany goal because it doesn’t relate the relationships of its characters to their kooky behaviors. Bartleby’s crony “Hands” (Columbus Short) was a star high school football player before an injury sidelined him into creating African-inspired sculptures with surprisingly enormous phalluses. The art pieces are amusing by themselves, be we can’t appreciate how they equate to the seemingly creative mind of their designer. It’s just one example of how the story and its characters are kept in hermetic bubbles of comic potential that are never popped. MTW

Recent Releases by Badass Bitches

Kirsten Guenther’s tattered art Former Maui Time photographer and recent cover model Kirsten Guenther is into recycling. In fact, she’s been lugging around a pair of door-sized windows for six years. Despite her boyfriend’s imploring that they be taken to the dump, Guenther finally found a spot for them— lit with rope lights, the panels now encase a series of photographs in her first-ever solo exhibition at the Livewire Café in Lahaina. The theme of the exhibit is what Guenther likes to call “Ragged Beauty,” a juxtaposition of beautiful things with decaying or tattered objects. The photographs Guenther chose to work with are a mix of hard and soft images; metal spikes and barbed wire are interspersed with flowers and femme fatales. A reclining woman is seen amidst the ruins of a house falling apart. There are also a lot of photos from a recent conceptual series Guenther did called, “Dolls to the Walls,” in which women are shown in various guises of frilly antiquity and mock plasticity. “I thought it’d be fun for my girlfriends to dress up as dolls and play,” said Guenther. “You always have to have an excuse when you’re grown up but why do you have to be little to do it?” Of the 14 pieces covering the café’s walls, most are images inspired by “Alternative Methods of Photographic Printing” classes she took earlier this year at the Hui No’eau with Paul Mullowney and Gwen Arkin. In the classes, Guenther learned about cyanotype (blueprinting) and Van Dyke Brown, which are archival processes of contact printing. Typically in the dark room, a photographic

negative is put in a plate with clamps and enlarged on paper, making a print. However, for most of the photos in Guenther’s exhibit, the procedure was decidedly more intensive. After she first acquired each negative from an ink jet printer, Guenther then coated it with cyanotype or Van Dyke Brown chemicals and let it dry overnight. She then would place the dried negative on top of really thin, handmade Japanese paper called Gampi, sometimes adding peripheral touches, like actual lace around the border. Then she’d put a sheet of glass on top and sandwich it together. The last thing to do was take the sandwich outside so the sunlight could activate the ferric salts. “It’s like cooking it, really,” she said. The image would be left in the sun about 20 minutes, until the image was burned into the paper. Then Guenther would bring it back inside to the sink, take apart the sandwich and check the image. Finally, she’d have to gently wash the chemicals out of the tissue-thin paper for about a half an hour or it would continue to expose. “It rips, it tears—it’s so delicate,” said Guenther. “It requires so much patience and determination.” Once the paper dried, she adhered the Gampi to a regular watercolor printmaking paper, resulting in a one-ofa-kind piece she could never duplicate, even using the same steps. “It takes hours and hours for each print,” she said. “But I love all the imperfections you see. The wrinkles and the little hairs are so cute!” Guenther’s “Ragged Beauty” exhibit is on display now through Sept. 10, daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Livewire Café, 612 Front St., Lahaina, 661-4213. PEACHES “IMPEACH MY BUSH” [Canadian electro-punk] Peaches is an outright dirty, foul-mouthed slut. And I love her. As always, her lyrics are naughty as they wanna be on songs like “Tent in Your Pants” and “Two Guys (For Every Girl),” and take a slight political bent in “Fuck or Kill,” where she proudly claims, “I’d rather fuck who I want than kill who I’m told to.” But in between the toe-tapping catchiness of “Hit It Hard” and the handclappin’, roadhouse rocker blues of “Give ‘Er,” with raunchy guitar riffing provided by Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Peaches manages to sound like a Prince ingénue in the nu wave synth-pop of “Downtown.” And in the rocking “Boys Wanna Be Her,” she channels Joan Jett, who also happens to back her growl in the bad girl anthem “You Love It.” You can almost visualize the sexy snarl and the shiny luster of her leather pants—or in Peaches case, the disturbing spandex sheen of her camel toe. —2006 XL Recordings, Ltd.

SIA “COLOUR THE SMALL ONE” [Intimate, downtempo electronica] The overall vibe of this album epitomizes the sweet wrath of melancholy. Even on more upbeat tunes like “Sunday,” Sia (the Australian vocalist from Zero 7) sings languorously, imploringly, like she’s just finished a three-day bout of crying and might be ready to accompany you for a quiet tea in the garden now, as long as you don’t disturb her fragile state of wallow. But rather than being whiny, draining or obnoxiously depressing, Sia invites you in, smiles wanly and seductively croons for you to, “Be my friend/ Hold me, wrap me up/ Unfold me/ Warm me up/ And breathe me.” —2006 Astralwerks

CORINNE BAILEY RAE “CORINNE BAILEY RAE” [Soft, jazzy soul] It might seem strange to include Corinne Bailey Rae in this mix of “Badass Bitches.” Don’t get me wrong—her light, scratchy British inflections are still badass, but her silky smooth soul is less “bitchy,” more akin to the perpetually likeable, mellow Norah Jones and funky Macy Gray, although in her lush voice I do hear a bit of Martina Topley Bird—Tricky’s dark and bluesy trip-hop chanteuse—if she were to go mainstream. Rae is full of airy charm and earthy sweetness, making me feel like I’m lounging under a tree at the park on a sunny day, watching children and puppies play, while butterflies land on my nose. —2006 Capitol Records

NEKO CASE “FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD” [Alt-country noir] There is no one quite like her; to my ears, Neko Case has the strongest female voice in alt music today. Although she has an indie rock gig as vocalist for the New Pornographers, her solo music has a timeless, haunting beauty like that of Patsy Cline, but with a grittier edge and an eccentric narrative style of songwriting. This latest release may be a bit folksier and less dark than previous recordings, but that captivating voice on quintessentially Neko songs like “Star Witness” and “Hold On Hold On”—along with the Edward-Gorey-esque artwork on the cover— make this album yet another winner for me. Plus, I’m a sucker for steel guitar and echo-y reverb effects. —2006 Anti, Inc.

ANNA OXYGEN “THIS IS AN EXERCISE” [Dancy, operatic, electro-pop] Oh man, this chick makes some weird music. It reminds me of the “New Romantic” ‘80s era of heavily synthesized, poppy goth-rock dance music, like Clan of Xymox and Soft Cell—but with a sense of humor. It’s the kind of stuff I’d expect would seep out of some dank underground club in Chicago or something, but Anna Oxygen actually comes from Olympia, a small town in Washington. She even holds these cool classes there called “Loop Girls” so that girls ages 10 to 15 can learn how to work a drum machine and make three-chord pop songs. Chatting about Love, Tears and King Kong ME: Have you seen King Kong? HER: Yeah. The new one? It went on and on and on and on and... Yeah, it was fucking forever and a day... and I bawled my eyes out. Like, hardcore. Yeah, I hate when animals die. “‘Twas beauty that killed the beast.” Geez. All that poor ape wanted was his little lady to love and protect. Sure, he had anger management issues but she coulda stuck around for a while! If you think about it, it’s kinda like having a relationship with a really needy person and you just aren’t that into it. But, when you try to leave they freak and have the most dramatic broken heart ever. It’s not like it’s your fault though, if you just aren’t into them. Same type of situation and they always want to blame the girl!! Uh, yeah… That’s probably why I cried my eyes out, too. Gosh, you just hit the nail on my head. It hurts. Here’s why: Oh, sorry! Had a fun weekend with this guy I’m seeing. It was cool: we hung out, went to a couple parties— I met his boss and co-workers, he met some of my friends. Then we had this romantic, very lovely dinner and he was so charming, I was swooning all over him... (Don’t gag yet.) Then, probably because I’d had a couple glasses of wine (okay, AND three cocktails), I told him I didn’t think he was over his ex yet. Oh shit. When he insisted he was over her—that she’s totally with someone else now and he’s seeing me—I pressed the issue, and straight-out asked him if he was still in love with her. And after a long pause, he looked me in the eye, sighed, and said, “I don’t know.” OH SHIT. Then what??? Then we sat there in silence and stared at the dessert. It was so awkward and awful. And we drove all the way from Lahaina to Wailuku like that. And I threw a passive-aggressive/silent tizzy fit and dropped him off at his place, when we’d already made plans previously to go back to my crib and watch King Kong. And he didn’t say a word or look at me when he got out of the car. Have you spoken since? Nope. I went home, cried myself to sleep. Woke up two hours later and watched King Kong by myself. Cried some more and couldn’t go back to sleep. Been up since 3 a.m. I feel TERRIBLE. And I have, of course, all this work to do and it’s extremely difficult and I hate myself. I am The Sabotage Queen. It’s the psychologist in you that wants to show people their own insides. Is he at work right now? No. He’s off today so it’s killing me that he’s not calling. He usually calls by now. God I’m such a mess. You should probably bite the bullet and call him. Yeah, did that about a half hour ago. Left a lame message. Nothing to do now but wait. And work. I hate today. That sucks. I’m sorry. Thanks. And thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Can’t really talk about it, like, out loud. Yeah… I feel like actually verbalizing shit is so emotionally intensifying. Can be, yes. And you’re so horribly right on about the psychologist thing. I mean, we’re really just hanging out—I didn’t need to ask any deep questions, or make any “astute” observations. Why do I have to do that? It’s so obnoxious. It’s a Pisces thing. I totally do it, too. It’s like that situation with the guy that got mad at you at Tiki Lounge when you “innocently” asked him why he was attracted to underage girls. We just like to watch people and see the way they work and when we spot something about them that they don’t even know, we simply HAVE to tell them. You know, that’s exactly what you did and now he has a lot to think about. That’s probably why he hasn’t called yet. He’s trying to figure out his own shit. When he does, he’ll call and I bet it makes your (yeah, I’m gonna say it) relationship, or friendship, stronger. Wow. I guess so. Maybe you’re right. I still feel like an ass, though. Hey, it happens. I’m proud of you for holding back for so long. I just wish I was better prepared for his answer if I was so willing to dish it out like that. Now I have to defend my actions and I hate that. It’s understandable he still has feelings for his ex. I think I’m just trying to avoid having my feelings getting any deeper if he’s unwilling to let go. But he is— willing, I think. BUT then again, I guess some things take longer than you want sometimes. Ain’t that the truth. Anyway, that fucking King Kong movie really fucked me up. I was so irritated with that movie. They could’ve cut, like, five minutes out of each scene and I woulda been satisfied. Yeah, it was King Long. Ha. Ha ha. Samantha Campos does not find it ironic that she has just now received by mail an unsolicited copy of the book Minds in Distress: The Clash of Evolution, Human Conditioning, and Culture in America.
