AUGUST 24, 2006

We Mauians have an often courageously independent and creative rag in Maui Time Weekly. Continuing respect and mahalos to you all. If that were all I had to relate herewith, you could smile more widely and settle more deeply into the comfy chair of your smug self-righteousness... but, oh darn, it doesn’t end there... Here’s the first thing that irks me (as a lover might be irked by continuously meeting some stubborn, unnecessary, detrimental and easily-changed egocrap in one’s partner week after week after week...) Your continued refusal to upgrade your calendaring SOP [Standard Operating Procedure] to ALWAYS post calendar listings/events with BOTH the numbered date TOGETHER WITH the NAME of the DAY of the week upon which it occurs. (Incidentally, your rag happens to mirror the careless practice of the Maui local daily paper in this regard— I would think you’d do as much as you could to differ from that example.) I’m actually experiencing extra pissedness on this matter due to my once having called your office to see about redressing this situation, yet my call and expressed concern was met with merely nonchalant disdain, and rebutted with lame excuses for continuing the current deplorable practice rather than actually listening to some sincere and valid perspective shared from among your readership. Okay, so you still think I’m overreacting, hmm? Let me elaborate: Though your publication is rightly, perhaps, the center of “your” universe, it is not so for everyone else, not even for your regular readers. As such, the vast majority of humanity do not know exactly what fucking day of the week your paper appears on the streets (though I may have been so informed at one time, I seem to have forgotten, not to mention the fact that that glorious day may have been changed since last I checked...) And while you DO print the date of publication at the bottom of the page, you DO NOT print the NAME of the day of the week therewith, so... when one who is so uninformed as I (and, again, basically all of humanity excepting yourselves) reads a line in the calendar, “such and such will happen on Thursday”, I have to start doing some paper-flipping research to discern which fucking Thursday the event will occur upon... and sometimes one discovers (later) that one happens to have been reading a leftover issue from last week or earlier. Any respectful and respectable

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

scheduler knows that every humanoid printer/publisher is likely to commit a typo or ten-thousand in the course of their career, right? As such, the simple way to negate any potential harm from such error in calendaring of events is to ALWAYS post BOTH the numbered DATE AND THE NAME of the day of the week together, for this method carries a built-in typo-warning to the reader whenever the day and the date do not match. Without this double-data check, the readership will remain clueless and pissed when they arrive at an event that isn’t happening on the date which was typo’d in the printed promotion. Why not be professional, respectful, and cover your collective ass by including all relevant clarifying information????? Calendar-makers who do not practice this simple principle are fucking careless, irresponsible, and disrespectful not only to their readership, but also disrespectful to the promoters of said events who have paid to have a clear and complete listing of their event publicized. It matters not if such a typo is unintentional or a case of intentional sabotage of the event in question—the result is the same. That is, by not printing together BOTH bits of information, you and the local daily paper thereby set the scene for flatly ruining and destroying some events for which many persons have spent many precious hours and dollars in planning and preparation, due to some stupid, careless unnecessary typo in regard to the date. Yeah, I hear in my mind your defensive response again—rather than listening to what a sincere and long-concerned reader is relating to you, you want to snap back, “Well, pull out a calendar and figure it out!” And my response to that is: why don’t YOU take a look at a fucking calendar and print it all out, so tens of thousands of others don’t have to grab a calendar to figure it out?! Further—and this point will require a more psychologically astute awareness of which I’m not yet sure you’re capable of honestly acknowledging or conceding: Promoters/advertisers generally rate the success of their promotion by how many people are actually physically drawn to an establishment or to an event, and by how many tickets or units of product are sold. Generally speaking, people who don’t show up in the right place at the correct time, don’t make a purchase, duhhh! This is especially true for any one-time special event. As such, it is a principle uppermost in the mind of any effective promoter/advertiser to make the promotion as clear, quick and easy as possible to understand and to follow through on... with as little possibility for confusion, distraction, or delay of understanding. It is my contention that you cannot con-

sider yourselves anywhere near as successful as you might be as an advertising publication as long as this sloppy calendaring practice continues. You do a great disservice to your advertisers/promoters by not posting BOTH the date and the day of an event, even if sans typo, for in such omission you thereby have included an automatic delay (regardless how immeasurable or miniscule), a distraction, a disconnect in the interpretation of the promotional matter... a distraction which, in this media and people-flooded world of distractions may actually prevent a certain percentage of individuals from returning their focus and attention to the printed promotional material. Ideally, enough info will be provided to elicit an “instantaneous and complete” mental calendaring of the exact day, date and time of the event. Savvy? Are we grokking the significance of what is being communicated here? It’s clear that everyone—readers, promoters, and publisher—will benefit when your calendaring SOP is upgraded in this regard. Okay. (I hate being ignored!) Please be willing to reveal in your daily/weekly deed that you truly are better, clearer, more hip, and more user-friendly than some other disdainful, obsolete publications by no longer leaving the people of Maui vulnerable to any further date-typo event sabotaging. Please reveal your intelligence, clarity, professionalism and respect by always posting the whole name of the day AND the date of every event. Mahalos evermore. -Jeffrey Turnbull, Kula The Editor responds: Okay, okay! We surrender! No other weekly paper’s calendar lists both the day and date of every event, but now ours does. No more will our readers have to—heaven forbid—look at a calendar to find out the exact day of the week for of our listed events.

menting on our coverage, but only if they’re complimentary. So, just wanted to thank you for firing me on my birthday. I especially enjoyed finding out from someone who doesn’t even work there. Then again, maybe you did me a favor: at least I got out before the ship sunk. I knew the company wasn’t doing well when we were forced to work with customers in the dark with no AC because we had to stay “on a budget.” Here’s a thought: you could save real money by eliminating all managers who get stoned on the clock, spread rumors about their employees, plan their weddings while on the clock or use their time to be tweaked-out, bitchy controlfreaks jacked up on coffee and cigarettes. While you’re at it, consider taking Human Relations 101. Don’t treat your employees like slaves, thieves or idiots. Bad word of mouth and high turnover can be very costly.

LC Watch Cards A woman who sells alcohol for a living called me the other day to say that she likes the Maui County Liquor Control rule requiring all establishments to ask for identification before selling booze to anyone. “It cuts out discrimination,” she said, and I had to agree with her on that point. No one can ever bitch about favoritism to a clerk or bartender if everyone young and old, spry and feeble, has to reach into his or her wallet and pull out an ID card.

Of course, what piece of identification the customer pulls out is a matter of some concern. Members of LC’s Board of Adjudication are fond of telling licensees hauled before them on charges of serving minors that a State of Hawai`i drivers license belonging to someone underage always has displays in red bold letters the words “Under 21 until” and then the date of the holder’s 21st birthday. That’s all fine and dandy for locals who try to sneak a six-pack of malt liquor or a bottle of Jager past a weary clerk, but what about a tourist? There are, according to a federal Homeland Security spokesman mentioned in an Aug. 1, 2006 Associated Press story, more than 8,000 different forms of legally acceptable identification.

In fact, there are so many IDs—and so many fakes—that this year investigators with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) who were carrying counterfeit identification cards were repeatedly able to enter the United States through the Canadian and Mexican borders. According to the GAO report, which was cited in the article, border agents at nine separate checkpoints “never questioned the authenticity of the counterfeit documents.” If U.S. border patrol agents are getting fooled by fake IDs, what chance to do local booze merchants have?

Sam Kalalau RUNNING FOR: East Maui Councilmember

ocean traffic with boats and ferries. Hawai`i doesn’t utilize that opportunity. Whether Hawai`i is ready for the Superferry—with our ports and infrastructure—is really the question.

OCCUPATION: Chair of the Maui County Cultural Resource Commission, organic farmer

What about George W. Bush? Enough is enough. I think he should get more of his priorities in line… I have a son and he’s been to Iraq three times—in fact he’s still there. I think he should start bringing everyone home already.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you? SAM KALALAU: I’ve been very active in Maui County for the past 25 years. I’ve sat on various boards and commissions, like the Planning Commission and the Grants Review Commission. I’ve also stood on the Lanai Burial Council, which is a state board. Presently I am the chair of the Maui County Cultural Resource Commission.

What would you do about ice? It’s an epidemic. The state and county are coming on real strong, but more needs to be done. There’s no treatment house on Maui—people have to go to Oahu to get clean. It’s very important for these guys when they get back home to have a job or place to go back. I am supporting building a housing project for those people when they come back home—a half-way house—in Hana.

What’s the biggest problem facing East Maui right now? One of the biggest problems I think is our old, overused highway system. Hana Highway needs to be improved for safety, and in the meantime we need to protect the cultural values of the highway.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you? I kind of get along with everybody real well. I no shame. If you no shame, you no more embarrassing moment.

Your father was on the original Hokule`a crew that sailed to Tahiti in 1976. How did that affect you?

What’s the last book you read? That was neat because I had the opportunity to help a lot with the inter-island Hokule`a voyages in the ’70s. Then I flew down and met them when they arrived in Papeete, Tahiti. I felt a connection with the people down there. The only difference was the language barrier—they speak Tahitian and French— and they drive on the opposite side of the highway. And they have siesta time, where they close down all the shops in the afternoon and take a nap. I think they should have that in Hawai`i, too.

What do you think about the Superferry? As a Hawaiian—as somebody who was involved with Hokule`a—and because on land we get all this traffic congestion, I think the Hawaiians had the right idea with ocean travel. I do think ocean travel would help the congestion on land. Maybe the answer isn’t the Superferry, but other types of ocean travel. You go Tahiti, New Zealand, Hong Kong, or Indonesia, they have super

Man, the GMO makers just aren’t getting any respect these days. Monsanto isn’t apparently growing genetically modified corn to make experimental drugs, but they’re still taking heat over it. In mid-August U.S. District Judge Michael Seabright ruled that the federal Department of Agriculture exhibited “utter disregard” for both the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act by allowing companies like Monsanto plant all sorts of GMO crops throughout the state without any environmental review of potential crop contamination that could potentially endanger the entire—and extremely delicate—Hawaiian ecosystem. Monsanto and other GMO-makers may have many friends in the White House and Congress expediting permits for them and so forth, but for the time being, the courts are still insisting that things like environmental laws are important. Lingle has in the past couple of years given police officers statewide more powers to conduct electronic surveillance on all of us; successfully convinced the courts to start getting teens convicted of dealing drugs banned for life from public places like Ka`anapali Beach; asked for a constitutional amendment that would legalize the currently unconstitutional practice of letting cops search people at airports without probable cause; watched as tens of thousands of arrest warrants sat idle in police stations state-wide; pushed hard for mandatory sentencing laws guaranteed to balloon our prison population, then abandon plans to build another prison on Maui in favor of just throwing more convicted felons into Arizona facilities. Sound like “protecting” the community to you?

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 16 Yippee! U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai`i) and U.S. Representative Ed Case (D, 2nd District) are finally going to debate each other! We’ve got to wait until Aug. 31 to see it, and then we’ve got to watch PBS, but on the whole, this is probably a good thing. The voters just haven’t seen enough of the two Democrats arguing with each other over the War in Iraq (Case is for, Akaka’s agin); the environment (both are for it, though Akaka voted to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge); and Hawaiian Sovereignty (both are for it, though Akaka’s been ripping Case’s sincerity, which Case denies). But mostly, we will all finally be able to put this ridiculous debate over whether to have a debate behind us. “We are interested in participating in something that will be informative, even and dignified,” Akaka spokesperson Elisa Yadao says in today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Dignified? If Akaka wants to participate in something “dignified” then he better get out of the Senate. Hell, one of Akaka’s own colleagues, Senator George Allen (R, Virginia) just made an ass out of himself by publicly calling an IndianAmerican man a “Makaka,” which is either a monkey or a racial slur directed against African-Americans—take your pick as to which is more “dignified.”

THURSDAY, Aug. 17 Wearing a bright orange polo shirt, beige cargo shorts and a gray beard, lefty columnist, author and island timeshare owner Robert Scheer spoke for nearly two hours tonight at Maui Booksellers in Wailuku. Scheer is the guy who got Jimmy Carter to say in a 1976 Playboy Magazine interview that he had “lust in my heart”— those of you who didn’t live through this have no idea how big a deal it was at the time—and he was at the small bookstore reading from and signing his newest book Playing President, which is a collection of thoughts on every U.S. President going back to Richard Nixon. Before a crowd of nearly 50 people, Scheer said some interesting things which for space reasons I’ve chosen to radically condense into the following quote : “I think the [Bush Administration] is part of a process that destroys common sense, that destroys responsibility. Nixon went to great pains to say [to me] that [Ronald] Reagan was not a ‘right wing kook.’ Carter is the best ex-president we’ve ever had [but] he was a shitty president. I don’t want to go light on Reagan, but there’s no question there was a there, there. He had a sense of reality. Same thing for George Bush’s father—he actually

Oh boy! I get to debate Akaka!

SUNDAY, Aug. 20 Yeah, I’m scared, too.

MONDAY, Aug. 21 played the game of baseball, rather than just cheerleading. I teach 600 students a year at USC. They’re great, but we’ve made them stupid with our testing process. My students [also] have absolutely no sense of history. The reason we have international terrorism is to have an enemy. What was Hitler’s pitch? What was Stalin’s pitch? We’re besieged by enemies! And they ended up getting their own people killed and their treasure wasted. Where is the patriotism in that? We learn about countries when we invade them and when we leave we don’t care. We don’t even know how many poor people we have because they don’t even keep the stats anymore. Democrats should take a page out of the Republican playbook and support people of principle. In a parliamentary system, you don’t get a total doofus in power because you have to prove yourself to your peers. The parliament in Iraq has unanimously voted to support Hezbollah. The whole parliament—it’s the only thing they’ve agreed on. [Bill] O’Reilly said I’m the most irresponsible journalist in the whole world. I think I’m going to put that on the back of the book.”

FRIDAY, Aug. 18 Hehe… doofus.

SATURDAY, Aug. 19 Wait, he’s talking about George W. Bush, president and commander-in-chief of the most powerful nation in history.

So the Honolulu Advertiser has a big story today on campaign signs. “Hawai`i law prohibits the placement of political signs on any public property, including median strips, sidewalks, fences and rights of way,” said the story. Come on! This is Hawai`i! We’ve got to have signs lining every street corner and chain-link fence in the state! Do you really think posting signs on privately owned walls, fences and yards will do the trick? If not for the signs, what kind of campaigns would he have? You want a bunch of candidates walking down your street and knocking on your door? I didn’t think so.

the people who shared their stories at a series of five sessions held around the island in June and July,” stated the report, which was mailed to County Council Housing and Human Concerns Committee Chairman Danny Mateo. “What is affordable housing for you?” read one survey question given to all participants. “Ability to pay for housing without having to sacrifice food, gas and other necessities,” said one resident. A single mother told of moving her family 17 times in 20 years. Another participant from Kihei offered that “We would be very happy in a small two-bedroom plantation-style home that is under $250,000 [but] they don’t exist.” How many more elections do we have to suffer through before those who win finally start holding land developers accountable for this?

TUESDAY, Aug. 22 Just finished reading a report from the group Housing for the Local Person (HLP) on a series of talk story sessions on affordable housing. Carroll, whose day job is as a homebuilder, said volunteers designed and then built the church, but agreed to get a permit for the re-building.

SHOW YOUR TATS!

Despite education campaigns by women’s groups, about one-fourth of girls in Cameroon still undergo ritual “breast-ironing” at puberty as their families attempt to squash their developing bosoms to make them sexually unattractive to boys and reduce their temptation to marry. The most popular “ironing” instrument is a heated wooden pestle, mashed painfully against the chest. Some girls are supportive, however, like the one who told BBC News in June that she just “wanted to [stay in] school like other girls who had no breasts.”

The tattoo-removal business is booming, according to a May Fox News report that highlights dissatisfaction with formerly trendy Chinese-language tats that were often either mistranslated as nonsense (“blood and guts” translated as “blood and intestines”) or were actually jokes pulled on people too cool for their own good (such as Chinese words for “gullible white boy”). A removal service in Beverly Hills, Calif., said it takes off at least seven Asian tattoos a week.

Until June 2005 the Maui Land & Pineapple Company owned a 40-acre triangular parcel of land in Pukalani near the Superette that exemplifies the imprecise, problematic way in which the County of Maui conducts property tax assessments. The land, popularly known as the “Pukalani Triangle,” is zoned for agriculture. Since the county considered it part of ML&P’s pineapple fields, it was willing to assess its value at just $2.3 million. Yet the land hadn’t seen any pineapple production since at least the early 1990s, according to a company spokesperson. Because construction of the Pukalani Bypass separated the parcel from the rest of the company’s pineapple fields, making it difficult to move farm equipment over to it, Maui Land decided to stop farming it. Since then, a jungle of weeds and other plants took over the field, making it obvious to anyone driving by that the land wasn’t part of any pineapple production. Despite that, the company—which made $14.6 million in profits last year on $186.7 million in sales—paid just $162 a year in property taxes on the parcel. Assuming ML&P owned the parcel for at least a decade after it stopped farming pineapples there, the company’s property taxes on the parcel came to about $1,620 from the time it stopped pineapple farming to the date of sale. That’s a substantial savings over what Maui Land would have paid had the county Department of Finance assessed the parcel at its “highest and best use,” which in this case would probably be something closer to commercial or residential development. Had the land been zoned that way, Maui Land would have had to pay $10,813 a year in property taxes on the parcel. Over a decade, that comes to more than $100,000—money that could have gone to

county human services, the fire department or who knows what. The reason Maui Land paid such a low tax rate is simple: county officials say they had no idea the company had stopped growing pineapples there. County property tax officials thought the land was still a big pineapple patch, so they didn’t inspect it. “I’m always curious as to how there are slip-throughs,” County Director of Finance Kalbert Young told me. “It’s a prominent location. Our last records show it was in ag production. I spoke to our appraiser last week on this. We don’t see any active ag [there]. We don’t know how long it’s not been in ag.” County law requires property owners to notify the Department of Finance if they stop doing agriculture on ag parcels, but Maui Land & Pine apparently never said anything to the county when it stopped growing pineapples on the parcel. In fact, the only reason we know about this parcel and its peculiar tax issue is because a private citizen researched the property and then wrote a letter to the county about it. “They’re supposed to tell the county when they take property out of ag,” said Kuau resident Robert Karpovich, who wrote a letter to County Councilwoman Michele Anderson back on March 28, 2006 about the Pukalani Triangle and other problems he had with county tax policy. “I have a problem with the ag use system, but even with the system it should be administered properly.” Nearly a month later, in an April 24, 2006 letter to the County Council Budget Committee, Finance Director Young tried to explain what had happened after he read Karpovich’s letter. “Upon field check on April 21, 2006 by the appraisal supervisor, it was confirmed that

Mr. Karpovich’s claim of non-use for this parcel is totally correct,” Young wrote. “The RPTD [Real Property Tax Division] was not notified of any intent to discontinue the agriculture uses, and therefore was not able to reassess the parcel for highest and best use. This situation underscores the potential for properties to circumvent requirements in the

“It really is a lottery as to what your tax assessment is going to be,” Karpovich told me. “They can’t just decide to tax some people and not others.” Code (inadvertently or intentionally).” For its part, Maui Land & Pineapple denies that it did anything wrong. In fact, it says it was proper for the company to pay the ag tax rate because they always used the Pukalani Triangle for agriculture. According to a Maui Land spokesperson, the company always considered the land part of its agricultural holdings and was just keeping the parcel “fallow.” In addition, the company also leased “a few acres” of the parcel to a private stable. “We do allow our fields to go fallow for some time,” said Teri Freitas Gorman, Maui Land & Pineapple’s Director of Corporate Communications “It’s still being used for

ag purposes.” Young said his office is currently reevaluating the property. But when I asked him why Maui Land & Pine never said they’d stopped growing pineapples on their Pukalani Triangle, Young said he didn’t know. There’s no way to tell how many “Pukalani Triangles” exist elsewhere in Maui County. And that’s a big problem because the County of Maui’s whole system of collecting taxes rests on proper property assessments. Since the county taxes landowners on what they own, officials need to know what it is exactly that the owners own. Otherwise, the county can’t be sure it’s getting the right amount of tax revenue for a given piece of property—a rate too high is unfair, while a rate that’s too low risks starving the government of needed services. The whole system also needs to be equitable, or other nearby property owners will feel cheated. “While no properties are exactly alike, tax assessment values of similar properties should be done on an equitable basis,” Young wrote to the County Council Budget Committee back on April 24. “The Maui County Code currently mandates appraisals through techniques that allow for mass appraisal, and this allows for efficient distribution of resources and operations within the RPTD.” Put simply, “mass appraisals” are a poor substitute for actual individual inspections and assessments. Young admitted as much, but added that it’s not realistic for any jurisdiction to physically visit every piece of property every year. Nonetheless, county law is very clear on property tax assessments: the Department of Finance needs to do them every year on every parcel of land. On paper, this looks

great. In practice, it’s a nightmare. “We have nine appraisers and 66,000 parcels of land,” said Young. “As a result we’re only able to physically inspect property once every five or six years.” Young added that his office has wanted to hire another compliance officer, one whose job would be to inspect questionable property tax situations exactly like the Pukalani Triangle, but no recruiting has been done since the job itself is still being reviewed by the county Department of Personnel Services. Karpovich, who says he’s watched his own property taxes climb while those of his neighbors—who live in identical houses—stays constant, finds these explanations unacceptable. “The county needs to send guys out with computers and spreadsheets and do assessments,” said Karpovich. “They say they can’t do it here because there are too many properties. If the county wants to pay me a 10 percent commission, I could collect them millions of dollars.” In fact, Maui Land & Pineapple’s Pukalani Triangle wasn’t the only example of questionable tax assessment that Karpovich included in his letter to Anderson. Most notably, Karpovich pointed to the popular Kuau restaurant Mama’s Fish House—with an apparent assessed value of just $133,500—as something the county might want to investigate. “The assessors apparently do not care to look at this property in spite of its significant expansion and upgrading,” Karpovich wrote.

“[E]ven though I have questioned them for several years on the fairness of this extremely low assessment, when comparing it to my house assessment.” In response to Karpovich’s letter, Young sent an apppraisal supervisor to Mama’s Fish House on April 21—the same day he had the Pukalani Triangle checked out. “[I]t was confirmed that there have been changes made that are not reflected on the real property tax records,” Karpovich told the Council Budget Committee in his April 24 letter. “According to the [appraisal] supervisor, the Division has no records of building permits issued for any construction work done on this parcel that would have initiated a site inspection by an appraiser.” Young told me that copies of all new building permits get sent to the Real Property Tax Division. At that point an assessor goes out and reappraises the property. In a case where the owner doesn’t file for a new building permit, there’s not much his office can do, though Young said he has asked for a new assessment of Mama’s based on Karpovich’s letter. “As far as we know, we’ve filed permits for all our improvements,” said Karen Christenson Marshall, head of marketing for Mama’s Fish House. Marshall added that, to her knowledge, no one from the county had contacted them about their alleged failure to file permits for improvements or any new property appraisal. “This is the first we’ve heard of this,” she

said, referring to my faxing copies of Karpovich’s and Young’s letters to her office on Aug. 17—four months after the letters were written. “None of us are aware of any investigation.” Karpovich also included instances of adjoining lots that seemed to have wildly different land values. The first dealt with a lot in Kuau holding a $96 per square foot land value that’s next to a lot valued at $208 per square foot. According to Young’s April 24 letter to the Budget Committee, the difference was due to shoreline erosion at the more expensive lot, which caused assessors to value it as “oceanfront” property. But Young said his office would carry out an additional review to see if further erosion has given it oceanfront status as well. In Huelo, Karpovich wrote that he found six adjoining two-acre lots with land values ranging from $109,500 to $1 million. Young told the Budget Committee that since those parcels carried ag as well as conservation designations, “some parcels may have incorrect use rates applied to their parcels or may have an error in the application of the agricultural use rate, highest and best use rate, and conservation rate.” Once again, he told the committee that his office would conduct “a more detailed review.” “It really is a lottery as to what your tax assessment is going to be,” Karpovich told me. “They can’t just decide to tax some people and not others.” MTW

Sticky Ribs and Kung Pao Scallops ZuiHao brings fusion cuisine to Front Street There aren’t many restaurants crazy enough to enclose their kitchen in glass and then show it off to virtually every customer in the house. Do patrons really want to see their chefs and cooks—regular-type people like you and me—chopping, dicing, frying and otherwise touching their food? Most establishments look on their kitchen as the hospital handles its ER: staff it with the best, but don’t let family members anywhere near it.

Open Sun.-Thurs., 5 p.m.-10 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 5 p.m.-1 a.m. $$ There seems no such worry at ZuiHao, the new stylish Chinese restaurant at the north end of Lahaina Town. Indeed, the whole place seems to be on display, from the front and back patios to the open kitchen to the amber-lit bar where everyone it seems is in love with the lychee martinis. The bill of fare is titled “The Best Chinese Cuisine on Maui,” and there’s certainly plenty of it on the menu: Mu Shu Pork, Hunan Beef, Moo Goo Gai Pan, General Chu’s Chicken. Their Wonton Soup is some of the best and heartiest I’ve had. Indeed, I’m hard pressed to think of a place on the island besides ZuiHao that serves Egg Foo Young—that classic Chinese omelet containing pork, sprouts, onions and mushrooms—this good. But don’t think this is the place to go for those little cardboard containers full of egg rolls and cashew chicken. Look for potstickers and wontons here. The chicken spring rolls are fine—a bit thin, but tasty. Far more interesting than all of that

Hot and Sour Salmon are the “fusion” items. Like P.F. Chang’s or Thaifoon on the mainland, ZuiHao offers Chinese dishes touched by Pacific influences. Hence the delicious Coconut Curry Chicken, Hot and Sour Salmon, Seared Ahi Salad and Crab Rangoon— deep fried Wonton-like pastries stuffed with crab, folded up like a flower and served with a spicy mustard plum sauce. That’s nothing. Like Kung Pao Chicken? They’ve got it, but spend three bucks more and get Kung Pao Scallops. Your reward will be a plate of sizzling, delicate scallops stir-fried with scallions,

peanuts and those little red demon chili pods that add delicious zest when cooked in a meal but scorch your tongue like molten steel when bitten. Want something really different? Go for the Sticky Ribs—a small plate of meaty but surprisingly tender ribs slathered in a Mango Hoisin sauce. Or the Dan Dan noodles: think Chinese spaghetti, but topped with chopped chicken. Every table gets a chemistry set of shoyu, spicy oils and pastes for dipping, but those sitting at the bar get an added bonus—access to the special house chili

sauce. This simple but divine flavoring goes best on the lettuce wraps—a plate of delicious chopped garlic chicken much like your old Sloppy Joe mix and served with five lettuce “cups” for wrapping—but works wonders for just about every other entrée or appetizer on the menu. There are desserts, too: macadamia torte, cheesecake and lychee crème brulee, but those kinds of sweets you can get pretty much anywhere. It’s the moderately priced, dependably delicious Chinese/fusion food that sets this place apart. MTW

First off there’s Hidden Dangers in Kids’ Meals, which at first I thought was a strange title for a comedy, but then when I read about the movie I realized it’s actually a bit more dramatic. Produced by anti-GMO researcher Jeffrey Smith, who wrote Seeds of Deception, the film explores how one Wisconsin school started serving healthy lunches to their students, only to find that student behavior started changing for the better. After that is Manoomin: Saving Wild Rice, a look at the importance of wild rice in Minnesota and how genetic manipulation could upset the whole state’s ecosystem. After the films, which clock in at less than 30 minutes, Dr. Lorrin Pang—though a Maui District Health Officer, he’s appearing as a private citizen—will talk about his concerns about GMOs and take questions. For more information call 572-1865. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Five for Five Thursday, Aug. 24, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz, Lahaina [PUNK ROCK] I researched the “Five Bands for Five Bucks” show at Paradise Bluz the way any selfrespecting journalist investigates bands these days—I went to MySpace.com. There, I learned that Highly Unlikely is an upcountry punk band that counts amongst their “friends” Metallica, Bad Brains (impressive!) and Jim Morrison (apparently lurking MySpace from the great beyond). I couldn’t find information on the other bands—event-flyer coverboys Never Say Die share a name with at least 29 other bands—but that’s probably due to punk’s honorable tradition of spiting anything mainstream. No matter. It’s not every Thursday that we get to see five punk bands in Lahaina. For five bucks. Count me in, I’ll see you there! I’ll be the one who looks exactly like my MySpace profile photo. Except I’ll be wearing clothes and not holding that rented python. Admission: $5. [COREY NIELSEN]

No Shame Hula Saturday, Aug. 26, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [CULTURAL/DANCE] Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt-Padilla will showcase the beauty and spirit of the Hawaiian culture in a concert called “ `A`a I Ka Hula: Dare to Dance.” Several local halau—including the Tau Dance Theater troupe, known for their modern interpretations of the hula—will perform along with four Miss Aloha Hula and musical guests Holunape and Waiehu Sons. This should be a lot different from the last “shameless dancing”-themed event I attended. Tickets: $10, $28, $30; half-price for children 12 and under. Call 2427469. [GENA GAMMIE]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Smoke and Mirrors Ed Norton and Jessica Biel love mysteriously Filmmaker-to-watch Neil Burger (his first film Interview With The Assassin is a gem of independent cinema) tells an enchanting story about Eisenheim, a turn of the century magician (immaculately played by Ed Norton) who reconnects with his childhood sweetheart the Duchess Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel). Sophie responds to Eisenheim’s romantic plan to escape together from the razor clutches of Vienna’s corrupt Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) to whom Sophie is nearly engaged. A tragedy incites Eisenheim to abandon his signature illusions toward conjuring “ghosts” of real people in order to publicly trap Prince Leopold. Melodramatic passion and a snappy mystery complement this well-written movie based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize winning writer Steven Millhauser.

The Illusionist

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/109 mins.

Eisenheim sits in a café chair on an empty stage in a packed Eastern European theater (although set in Vienna, the film was shot in Prague). His patient demeanor and carefully trimmed goatee belie Eisenheim’s youthful physicality. This is not merely a skilled sleight-of-hand magician but rather a socially aware illusionist

effortlessly manipulating the laws of power to bestow on his audience revelations of physical and metaphoric significance. The conjurer plants a seed into a flowerpot, and an orange plant full of fresh fruit abruptly blossoms; he tosses one of the ripe oranges out to an excited patron in the astonished crowd. Magic historian and performer Ricky Jay served as technical consultant to the production, making sure that all of the illusions pertain directly to the story’s turn of the century timeframe. The effect is beguiling as Eisenheim sets free two butterflies carrying a borrowed hand-

kerchief to its proper owner in the crowd of spectators. There are no gratuitous sequences of computer generated imagery to distract from the story. The point of each illusion is to reflect an aspect of the story’s progression. In this way Neil Burger enables the audience to discern and examine hidden qualities of Eisenheim’s intelligence and sense of desire. Flashbacks reveal Eisenheim as a teenage prestidigitator and cabinetmaker’s son when his juvenile relationship with the equally adolescent Sophie von Teschen was halted by her bigoted and

wealthy parents. Now 15 years later Eisenheim catches Sophie, still wearing the locket that he handmade for her in childhood, when he randomly calls her up onstage from an audience to participate in one of his tricks. The lovers meet in the afternoons of the following days in clandestine carriage rides that coincide with the geeky-but-effective Inspector Uhl’s surveillance of Eisenheim at the Prince Leopold’s bequest. The dramatic elements of the romantic story coalesce when Prince Leopold commands Eisenheim to perform in the royal palace. Undaunted by the parlor room constraints imposed on him, Eisenheim takes the bait of the prince’s gambit to use an object found in the room to entertain the elite assemblage. Eisenheim requests the prince’s sword and balances it on the floor from where it can only be removed— like Excalibur—by someone pure at heart. Paul Giamatti does a deft supporting turn as Chief Inspector Uhl a local detective with an amateur’s passion for magic tricks. The pristine scenes that Giamatti and Norton share are layered with entertaining levels of dramatic and almost comic inflection. These guys are having fun. The Illusionist is first and foremost a love story. There is a formal reverence for the unspoken loyalty between Eisenheim and Sophie that elegantly expounds on the period aspects of the story to create an atmosphere of timeless devotion and uncommon humility. It supports the old adage that says, “Love will find a way.” The mystery lies in how. MTW

Class Project The music of Halau Ku Mana and Native Sound Underground There is a lot at stake. You can hear it in the lyrics of songs they sing and see it by the way over 200 students and professional musicians join together to raise funds for it, in producing a double-disc compilation of diverse Hawaiian offerings. Halau Ku Mana (HKM) is a public charter school— one of 12 schools in Hawai`i’s Na Lei Na`auao Charter School Alliance—dedicated to providing a culture-based, hands-on education for disadvantaged students ages 11 through 17. Now five years running, the biggest obstacle the school currently faces is financing. Receiving approximately half the funds from the state as other public schools, with no money allocated for a permanent residence, Halau Ku Mana must get creative with resources. And they’ve accomplished this mainly by holding benefits and producing music. Mana Maoli, Vol. II & III is HKM’s second release, which features previously unreleased originals and freestyle recordings from students, teachers and family, as well as the likes of Jack Johnson, Oshen, Paula Fuga, John Cruz and others—a loose, informal collective known as the Native Sound Underground. Many students have contributed to the project, but this is no amateur operation. Slick production, natural talent and what appears to be the heart and soul of everyone involved makes for a double-CD—that’s 89 songs, clips, chants and riffs—filled with some surprising gems. In “Life’s Butterfly” on Vol. II (InnoNative), HKM senior Kapua Chock sings of inner strength and letting go of pain and suffering. It’s a haunting melody that Chock composed and her voice is magnetic—at once vulnerable and proud, passionate and insightful—as she is backed by musicians from The Girlas, Inner Session and the Opihi Pickers. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) This week, the first week with the sun in Virgo, deserves some celebration. That means it’s time to release the party animal I know (or at least suspect) is hidden beneath your pragmatic exterior. Most of the year you’re like an industrious and indefatigable ant, but right now you need to be the carefree grasshopper. After all, what’s all that hard work for, unless it occasionally earns you a guilt-free vacation, of sorts? You could have a blast this week, if you let yourself. Are you so set in your ways that you’d deny yourself fun?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I know you practice discretion out of natural tact and concern for others’ feelings (as well as for your own reputation), but right now anything worth saying is worth saying loudly and openly. Own your words and opinions, and stand by them (or, if you’re open-minded enough, truly reconsider them) when they’re challenged. Sneakiness is an undeniably ugly trait, and even though I know your prudence isn’t exactly underhandedness, it’s likely to be interpreted as such. Be loud and bold this week when you speak. If you think you can’t do that, then please just don’t say anything at all.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Your craving for extremes makes you procrastinate. You believe you function best under tremendous pressure. Because of your habit of waiting until the last possible minute you’ve probably become conditioned to working only under desperate circumstances. But you don’t actually have to wait until the outside world leans on you that hard. There’s a trick that someone with your astute grasp of mental manipulation can perform: choosing to believe that your circumstances have indeed become dire when they haven’t (yet). It’s a self-deception I suggest you learn and practice this week; if you wait until what you think is the last minute, it’ll already be too late.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’re definitely not a sore loser. But to be fair you haven’t had much practice at it, since you win so often. Luckily, you’re mostly a gracious winner, instead of gloating and lording your prowess over those less fortunate. Don’t forget that decent habit this week, when your victories will (once again) far outnumber your losses. Even for someone with luck as incredible as yours this winning streak can’t last. When those you’ve trounced trounce you back, you’ll be glad you treated them right when you were on top, because they’re quite likely to return the favor once your positions are reversed.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

SERVICES MAUI RECYCLING SERVICE Picks up all your glass, plastic, aluminum, tin, newspaper, & cardboard. Home Pickup; a convenience for $17.50/mo! Bi-monthly pick up. Commercial accounts avail. Call Now! 244-0443

Getting to know you is a process of becoming familiar with one idiosyncrasy after another. There’s no one around who looks more “normal” at first glance but proves to be anything but, the deeper one explores. Consequently, all of you have experienced this at some point: someone drawn to your “ordinary” façade is scared off by your extraordinary and deep inner world. That could be the case with anyone new who’s recently come into your life. May I suggest flaunting your quirks this week? You might indeed freak a few people out, but better now than later.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’ve heard the adage, “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer,” right? Bullshit—at least this week. You need to get as far away from those you dislike or disagree with, in favor of having some truly sweet moments with those you love. That wise saw intends to protect you by giving you insight into your enemies’ plots against you, but these guys aren’t clever enough to really screw you over, even if they catch you totally by surprise. So ditch them. Go hang, instead, with the people who are really worthy of your time.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Just keep plugging away at whatever it is you’re working on. Even though it may seem as if you have an interminably long road ahead of you, you’re actually much, much closer to the finish line than you think. The only problem is you won’t know how close you are until you actually cross the thing. So all you can really do for now is to keep inching forward and not give up. It’s totally an act of faith, and especially of self-belief. But luckily you, dreamy Pisces, because of your many acts of well-meaning selfdelusion, are eminently suited for it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Maui Recycling Service

Some trees and plants require the destructive force of a fire to explode into life. Their seeds wait patiently, sometimes for decades, for the incredible heat of a massive blaze that signals that their window of opportunity has finally come. Now that the trees that have dominated their territory have been killed or stripped down they have an opening to grab some sunlight and space for themselves. You, too, are waiting for just such a sign. To germinate prematurely would mean certain doom, as you’d just starve for lack of nourishment in the shadows of those who’ve had years and years to establish themselves. What am I hinting at? Patience. Wait for your moment, Aries. It’s coming, but not here yet.

If not now, when?

Curbside Recycling! FREE Recycling Bins – And No Sign-up Fee! When you subscribe for 3 months of bi-weekly service – (A $25 value!) New customers only – offer expires 8/31/06 244-0443 • www.mauirecycles.com

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re being forged. You shouldn’t regard your troubles purely as curses. Yeah, they suck, but they have a silver lining too: they make you, and your relationships, stronger. Those that suffer together also bond; they form connections of much greater intimacy and resilience than those who’ve only shared pleasant times in each other’s company. Remember that this week, if it’s not all sunshine and roses. This shit won’t break you, or your relationships. It’s just going to make them that much more powerful and enduring. In that way, it’s not so much a curse as, ultimately, a blessing.

Your world is trembling this week, Gemini. All you crave is feeling something solid beneath your feet, but tremors are shaking your foundations at the moment. This could be quite alarming, I realize, but please try to stay calm. The earthquakes rocking your landscape are actually quite gentle. They’re not going to knock down any buildings, disrupt any power lines, or generate any tsunamis. At most, they’re likely to blow down cobwebs, unearth bits of buried treasure, and finally give you an excuse to run into the arms of those you’ve been wanting to share that kind of intimacy with. You’ve been waiting for just this kind of opening. Now use it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) There’s a time for romance, but there’s also a time for practicality. Sometimes it’s nice to dance around a delicate subject but occasionally it’s better to just be blunt and lay all your cards on the table. You could easily choose either method this week, probably with similar results. But the direct and honest approach will also earn you a bit of respect, since lately you’ve developed a reputation for beating around the bush. Speak out, Cancer. Tell it like it is. It’s easier, faster, and just as effective as exercising pointless tact.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Let’s face it—even the most evolved Leo has habits born of a powerful ego drive. And every one of us has had the experience of feeling let down—just when you most needed the intoxicating lift of a compliment or some kind of validation, you didn’t get it. As you get older, you learn to provide more and more of your own encouragement. This week, when external validation continues to soar, don’t let your inner strength go soft and flabby from lack of use. Popular acclaim can’t last forever. You’ll want those emotional muscles strong for whenever they get their next workout.

Who writes Eh Brah? And why is it always so negative? If we told you, we’d have to kill you. Frankly we just don’t have that kind of time. It’s always negative because the anonymous people who write in are mad, really mad, and we don’t want to piss them off by saying anything “positive” or “happy” to dilute their message of pure, unadulterated malcontent. What’s it like working for a newspaper?

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

What’s it like? Hmm… well, there’s the hard reporting, you know, like when the Editor sends me out on assignment to interview an eccentric upcountry artist who’s making penis molds out of dirt, saliva and human feces. And there’s the even harder reporting, like when I have to sift through pages of MySpace profiles, listening to hours of some band’s “uplifting and inspirational” blend of dancehall, acid house and electronic Serbian chamber music. But really, working for a newspaper is best exemplified by the following memo the head honcho sent out last week: “Because I’m the editor or something I’ve been spending too much time thinking about the way we spell the name Hawaii in our paper. We’ve been spelling it Hawai’i (that’s an apostrophe in between each “i”) but I think we should actually be spelling it Hawai`i (using that accent mark thing that is on the key with that squiggle mark located on the extreme left corner of the keyboard directly beneath the esc key. I’ve noticed other papers do the spelling this way, though I wish I could say why. Anyway, unless you have objections, I think we should begin making this spelling change this week. Please let me know if you’re okay with this or if you think I’ve gone mad with power. That is all.” Do you really do all those things you write about? Is it difficult to come up with a column week after week? And do you really drink that much? Yes, yes and more. Much, much more. Who is “MTW” and why does he/she have their initials at the bottom of every story? Ah, yes—the late, great MTW. You see, MTW stands for Michael Thomas Worchester, who helped found Maui Times [sic] in 1892 and served as its first editor. I’m told he was a brooding chap, given to binges of naked, drunken croquet playing, when he wasn’t busy collecting outmoded dental equipment and making Faulkner-esque pontifications on the role of evil and corruption in the plight of the Populist Party. As an editor, Worchester adhered to strict rules of satire and sarcasm, always maintaining that no story uncovered in the quest for truth and justice should be devoid of a superfluous use of conjunctions and definitive articles. So now, we honor him by placing his initials at the end of each and every story that follows his time-honored, trusted guidelines. Did you just make that last part up? Duh. Samantha Campos is evil, really evil, and she will eat your head to prove it. MTW
