‘Work Here? I Don’t Work Here’ Getting to know the Maui Time Weekly family In this office? Oh, about seven minutes, I guess. Is that how long we’ve been talking? […]
Sure, okay.
I’m sorry, you just started working here seven minutes ago?
What’s your background, Andrea?
Work here? I don’t work here. I work next door at the law firm. I just came over to ask if anyone drives a beige 1973 Volkswagen beetle with the back window shot out.
Well, I was born and raised on Maui, but I moved to the mainland to go to college at UCLA. Fascinating. I think so.
What? I drive a beige 1973 Volkswagen Beetle with the back window shot out.
What did you study there? Law. I graduated Summa Cum Laude. Outstanding! See, I always tell our many, many fans that our people are just brilliant. Thanks.
MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Good afternoon, Andrea.
Anytime. So what brought you back to Maui?
ANDREA FELICIANO: Good afternoon to you.
An airplane. [Hysterical laughter for 35 seconds] That’s a good one, Andrea! An airplane!
You know, we’re always happy to see such bright, intelligent people in the office. Just looking at your face I can tell
$
Yeah, here—Maui Time.
that you’re thrilled at the opportunity to be here, Maui Time Weekly, where we can inspire people each week to better their communities.
Whenever people find out I work for Maui Time Weekly, they all jump at the chance to ask me questions. What’s it like working there? Is working on the paper fun? How do you guys come up with stories? Can I get a date with Holoholo Girl? Mostly, people want to know what the staffers here are like. They want to know all about the people behind the news—the hard working, dedicated minions who spend their days putting the paper together. So in the interests of answering some of those queries—and hopefully getting many of you people off my back—each week I’m going to chat with one of our hard working, dedicated minions, as long as space permits and I don’t get fired. This week I’ll start with Andrea Feliciano, who just walked into my office so she gets to go first:
Thanks, but you know it’s not that funny.
Says you! Anyway, seriously, how come you moved here? Oh, about three years ago my husband got this really great job offer to come out here and do public relations at one of the resorts. We thought about it for about three seconds before we decided to drop everything and get out here as soon as possible. That’s fantastic. So how long have you been here? Here?
Oh, then you might want to run out to the parking lot. How come? Because it’s on fire. [...] Riiiight. Okay. Well, hey Andrea, thanks for chatting with me. It’s been really informative. And folks, stay tuned next week when I interview one of our island’s many brave firefighters. Take care, and keep reading! MTW

Responsibility
Will the Kealia Boardwalk open soon?
Photo: Pietro Ortiz
Looks like work may finally be starting again on the scenic boardwalk through the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. According to a refuge spokeswoman, on Sept. 19 work began again on the 2,200-foot boardwalk, though at press time there’s no evidence of anything new at the site. The coastal boardwalk has been empty for more than a year—even the bright orange plastic netting strung around to keep people away is falling apart. But now workers from Central Construction in Kahului—the same outfit that built the boardwalk in the first place—will hopefully soon be tearing out the plastic boards to make way for new decking made by Trex. That material, a composite made from “recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood,” is guaranteed for at least 25 years and is supposed to resist moisture, sunlight and insects, according to the company’s website. Kahului firm Aloha Plastic Recyling was originally supposed to manufac-

ture the planking from 1.5 million milk jugs, but nowhere near that number ever materialized. That forced the company to draw 90 percent of its recycled plastic from the mainland. The project was also supposed to cost $2.2 million—provided by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA)—but the new job of tearing apart and rebuilding the asyet unused boardwalk will add at least $600,000 to $700,000 to the budget, said Central Construction manager Stanley Matsumoto. He added that the funds will come from a “costsharing arrangement” between FHA and his firm. This new work couldn’t come at a better time. With summer ending this weekend, that big orange sign by the makai side of North Kihei Road is threatening to become a really pathetic joke. “Boardwalk scheduled to open summer 2006 pending parking lot completion,” it taunts passing drivers as it stands over a couple piles of gravel, conex container and a conspicuous lack of any paved parking lot. But then again, the seemingly endless delays in the opening of the 2,200-foot scenic boardwalk through the Kealia refuge never had much to do with the proposed parking lot. After four months of construction— which itself was delayed a couple months because of rain and to accommodate “nesting season”—it was during final inspection in January 2005 when construction officials noticed severe cracking in many of the recycled plastic lumber used for the boardwalk’s decking. Officials said the problem was partly due to the material itself not taking to the intense Kihei sun but also a result of the absurd order to nail—rather than screw—the plastic planks to their wooden supports. “We had found that the plastic material was not [made] according to specifica-

LC Watch It was more than a year ago when a 19-year-old Liquor Control minor decoy walked into Lahaina Shell on Mill St., pulled a 40 of Miller Genuine Draft out of the cooler and walked up to the counter. The cashier ran the decoy’s ID through the register, which promptly rejected it. As the decoy walked away, the cashier suddenly yelled out, “You need to be one year older,” punched another, older birth date into the machine and then rang up the sale.
tions,” says Kealia refuge manager Glynnis Nakai. “Nailing was one of the problems, but it’s a moot point now because we have to replace all the plastic material.” If it ever opens, the boardwalk will provide an unparalleled hike (6/10ths of a mile) through some of the state’s last natural wildlife habitat. The mudflats and wetlands of the refuge—used by U.S. Marines for amphibious warfare training in World War II—is home to rare and endangered Hawaiian stilts, coots, Hawaiian ducks, black-crowned night herons, pacific golden plovers, sanderlings, wandering tattlers and ruddy turnstones. How long this new work will take is, as is typical for Maui construction jobs, anybody’s guess. After all, a Kealia news release dated Aug. 4, 2004 mentioned that boardwalk planning had been ongoing since 1996. Matsumoto said about three months, but Nakai laughed when I asked her for an estimate. “A few months?” she said. “Anything can happen.” On Sept. 18, a version of this story appeared on Mauitime.com
MTW
On Sept. 7, 2006, the case finally came up before the LC’s Board of Adjudication. Al Gustavson, president of Goose’s Edge, Inc., which owns Lahaina Shell, plea bargained at the last second to plead no contest to one charge of serving a minor in exchange for the LC dropping another count of failing to check ID. When offered the chance to speak, Gustavson first asked Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas if the cashier had ever been prosecuted for selling the beer to the minor. “I’m glad you asked me that,” said Temas. “I don’t have that in front of me.” “See, that’s the crux of the problem,” said Gustavson. “That was his responsibility—it should not be put on me. I’m guilty in the sense that it was my employee [who sold the beer] but I think the whole thing should be thrown out. Goose’s Edge didn’t sell [the minor] the liquor, he sold him the liquor… I’d love to have you make a statement and go after this guy and back off the licensee.” Board member Glenn Kunitake not so gently reminded Gustavson that he, as the owner, was responsible for all his employees’ actions, which Gustavson agreed was correct. But the board didn’t seem to be in a mood to push the point beyond that, and only fined Gustavson $1,000, which is the mandatory minimum for such a conviction.

Maui Land & Pine rises to the top on word that the Maui County Board of Ethics has dismissed a complaint that company VP Warren Suzuki shouldn’t have voted at a Maui County General Plan Advisory Committee meeting in June. For now, at least, the company’s voice on the committee dedicated to thrashing out a new county General Plan is safe and secure. And A&B drops a notch on news that the Ethics Board declined to take any action on an anonymous complaint that County Council Members Bob Carroll, G. Riki Hokama, Dain Kane, Mike Molina and Joe Pontanilla dined in February at the company’s behest at Mama’s Fish House. The Ethics Board said there was nothing wrong with the dinner, but their action on the complaint did bring about an additional mention of the infamous dinner in both this paper and The Maui News. MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle says on her reelection campaign website (www.lindalingle.com) about voting: “I get a thrill out of voting every time. It never loses its excitement for me, and I hope people will feel the same way this election.”
What she didn’t say: One of the people Lingle later announced she had voted for was Jerry Coffee, who’s running for Democrat Daniel Akaka’s U.S. Senate seat. Now Coffee—a rabidly right-wing Midweek columnist and former Vietnam War POW—went through open-heart surgery early in his campaign and dropped out of the race. But he remains on the ballot. By this strategy, Lingle hopes to create a situation whereby Coffee wins and then the Republican Party drafts an 11th hour replacement. Of course, who that person might be is a closely guarded secret? Will it be Mark Beatty, the best known Republican still actually in the race? Will it be Lingle herself, who recently raised an astounding $6 million and still has her hat out? Or could it possibly be Democrat Ed Case in a smashing about-face, should he lose the primary to Akaka? Or will none of this matter because Akaka has a lock on the seat? Will you people hurry up and vote so I can find out? -Anthony Pignataro

One day I watched you folks dig a hole and then fill it up again for seemingly no reason. Then you disappeared for a week before returning to do it again. This went on for months. Wouldn’t practicing with a Tonka truck in a sand pit be cheaper? Then, after you used your gigantic tracked vehicles to transform the semi-passable road into a treacherous stretch of potholes and half-assed patches, you took a vacation for several months. Was anybody going to consider returning to fix the damage? Also, I suggest that in the future that you put your road crew signs OUTSIDE the work area so people coming around the corner don’t almost run into you while you stand in the road and yell at people for driving too fast.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

taking anything for granted,” but come on: she’s not facing a primary challenger of note and her two Democratic adversaries—former state Senator Randall Iwase and current Waianae harbormaster William Aila, Jr.— have between them raised less than $300,000. Right now, Lingle has more than $2 million in the bank, and you can bet she’ll have a good chunk of money still there when the race is over and she’s free to start thinking about her next campaign… As for Case, he’s trailing in the polls and in campaign fundraising. The Star-Bulletin nod—“It is time for a younger person to begin building seniority in the Senate”—is a helpful boost, but unlikely to do much for the congressman who still feels the best for the country is to keep U.S. troops in Iraq for the foreseeable future. Anyway, if he’s elected, maybe he can do something about Dog Chapman.
FRIDAY, Sept. 15 WEDNESDAY, Sept. 13 I think this is going to be a quiet week. I don’t see much of anything happening.
THURSDAY, Sept. 14 Governor Linda Lingle raises $6 million with more than two months to go before the general election! The Honolulu Star-Bulletin endorses Ed Case for U.S. Senate! Bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman gets arrested and will be carted off to Mexico! There’s too much news! Deep breaths… Deep breaths… Okay, I’ve calmed down now. So, Lingle’s broken Hawai`i’s record for campaign fundraising, the previous holder being… Linda Lingle! Lingle says she needs all this money because she’s “not
It’s a strange way to run a reelection campaign, but hell, she knows best. Anyway, according to today’s Maui News, yesterday Her Majesty Linda Lingle got onstage at the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association’s annual membership meeting and said that Maui’s roads and sewers and such are failing to keep up with growth. Yes, failing. This comes as no surprise to anyone who’s spent more than 30 seconds on any of Maui’s lovely highways, but it’s odd for the state’s top elected official to say—namely because she’s the state’s top elected official, and has been for the last three and a half years. As governor, it’s her job to articulate her vision for Hawai`i, set the agenda and generally poke and prod the often unwieldy state Legislature into action. She’s done so, by her account, on the matters of homelessness, affordable housing, crime prevention, education, health care access and environmental preservation. But
where state highway improvement was concerned, evil “bureaucracy” stymied the mighty Lingle Administration. Oh yes, my friends, we’re all screwed.
SATURDAY, Sept. 16 Looks like the whole Hamakuapoko Wells issue is over finally… and was never really an issue to begin with. The Maui News is reporting that yesterday the Maui County Council voted 6-2 to ban use of the controversial wells for drinking water purposes even as it discovered a 2000 consent decree between the county and the state Department of Health meant the water would still be available for emergencies. Councilman Dain Kane even used the revelation to jab at Mayor Alan Arakawa—his primary opponent—saying it showed the incumbent “doesn’t have a clue.” Now I can’t tell if this means everyone wins or everyone loses. In fact, the two dissenting votes, Jo Anne Johnson and Mike Molina, said they did so because they want more information. But with the election just around the corner and two of Arakawa’s opponents sitting on the council, I doubt there will be time for that.
SUNDAY, Sept. 17 Dog, now that you’ve made bail, you know what you have to do: Run!
MONDAY, Sept. 18 With the primary election this Saturday, two new polls show U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka strongly leading upstart challenger Case. I mean, with numbers like these, the election could be a real blowout. In the first poll of likely Democratic voters statewide and conducted
by Ward Research, Inc., Akaka leads Case by 13 points, 51 percent to 38 percent. The second poll, by SMS Research and Marketing Services, surveys Big Island voters. Those numbers have Akaka leading Case by 14 points, 42 percent to 28 percent. What’s fascinating about these polls is that they haven’t really changed during the campaign—there’s never been a point in the race when Case led Akaka, mostly because there hasn’t really been a race. From the beginning, incumbent Akaka had the firm backing of the Democratic Party. It’s hard for a guy like Case, who holds views on wedge issues like the Iraq War that differ substantially from the party platform, to gain any kind of ground in that kind of race. Ironically, Case’s view that it’s time for younger representation in the Senate is right on: Akaka, though very progressive, hasn’t been particularly effective. But Case, who is far too supportive of the Bush Administration’s war in Iraq, just isn’t the guy to replace him. That means another term for the 81-year-old Akaka—not a particularly exciting prospect, but we’ve survived far worse.
TUESDAY, Sept. 19 First Dog Chapman and now this: CNN has reported that Sprecklesville resident and country music legend Willie Nelson was busted today in Lafayette, Louisiana for possession of marijuana and narcotic mushrooms. His tour bus was rolling through town when the fuzz pulled it over during a traffic stop. Searching the bus, the cops found one and a half pounds of MJ and another two-tenths of a pound of shrooms. Shocking, just shocking. Anthony Pignataro voted early and voted often. MTW

By Krista Sherer Being that I was born and raised here, Hawaiiana was a big part of my education as a child and I have always loved the myths and legends of the islands. I hold a deep reverence for the Hawaiian culture, touched with sadness for a race of people struggling to keep their customs alive. Yet even through this struggle Hawaiians have maintained their legends and history. But when I heard about `Ulalena—which runs five days a week at the Maui Theatre in Lahaina—I was skeptical. I thought
it would be another tourist trap, drenched with cheesy routines that disregarded Hawai`i’s cultural depth. Though skeptical, I decided to go. I wasn’t prepared for the show’s power and significance. The word `Ulalena is defined as a wind unique to Maui, as well as a red-yellow colored rain at twilight. This mystical element sets the basis for the beginning and end of the story. The viewer is guided through a journey of Hawaiian mythology, dance, chants and history. And from moment to moment, metaphors
integrated with original music, choreography, acrobatics and visuals create a spectacular experience. The story itself has a universal theme with hidden meanings. The Kumulipo, or the Hawaiian creation chant, signifies the endless cycles of life and lays the foundation of the show. The production begins with a man carrying the burial casket or ka`ai to an unknown destination. The taro, which is so important to all of Polynesia, dances with the first breath of life. way for the first ocean travelers navigating by the stars. In a magical forest a young ali`i, or king, has a vision of a lizard or mo`o. Trees come to life displaying their supernatural power, or mana and the kamapua`a, a pig demi-god, falls in love with Pele, the Volcano Goddess. In the Village, men pound poi while women beat kapa cloth. In honor of Lono, the village celebrates an ancient festival, the Makahiki. Then a European explorer arrives and the people show him great respect, thinking Lono has arrived in human form. The clash of old and new ways mixed with an introduction of foreign elements results in the overthrow of the old kapu, or taboo, system. Conflict and confusion, along with disease, killed a huge portion of the indigenous population. As this happens, immigrants come in to work on the island’s sugar cane fields, bringing more death. In response, Pele explodes into the audience. Then life begins again under the magnetic light of the Moon Goddess, Hina. The audience is finally invited to help manifest `Ulalena rain which blesses a new age of people facing the future. If you have ever seen `Ulalena you know it can leave you thoughtful and elated. For me at least, it also left me with a feeling to learn more about who was behind the performance. With more than 30 professional performers and musicians, most of them from Hawai`i, I went backstage shortly before one of their recent shows to gain a better understanding of what made the show so special. The show began to take shape in 1998 when Roy Tokujo, the managing partner of Lahaina Myth & Magic Theatre, imagined a production that would express the passion and beauty of Hawai`i’s past.

who plays Mo’o and just happens to be an exceptional acrobat. She is originally from Colombia. “I am not Hawaiian, but I come from a place where the same thing happened to the people,” she said. “With us it was the Spanish. `Ulalena is a universal story.” With barely 15 minutes until show time, I quickly thanked the ladies and followed Walker to another dressing room. There I met with two original cast members, Lynette Chun, who plays The Mother, and Cyndi Davis, a vocalist. They both exuded a calm, maternal feel and I found myself trying to slow down my delivery to match their demeanors. “`Ulalena was a basis of life and love,” Davis said, while Chun spoke of the universal concept in the show. She wanted people to “take with them a sense of awareness of the richness of the Hawaiian heritage, so that we can continue to regenerate a sense and place in history and allow the future to take from the past.” At this point it was time to get a male’s perspective, so I followed Walker to the other side of the theatre to visit some of the gentlemen players. Outside the men’s dressing room, Walker poked her head in and asked if the men were decent. “Never!” two or three responded. Kipe Ebana, who plays Kamapua`a, then walked out. I asked him what he wanted people to get out of the show. “Some people don’t even know that Hawai`i has its

Working together with ARRAMontreal—a renowned Canadian company specializing in high concept productions—as well as noted Hawaiian historians, composers and entertainers, `Ulalena was born. Kalapana Kollars, who seems serenely poised and plays the young ali`i, hasn’t been with the show that long. But he has an eloquent grasp of the story’s subtleties. “`Ulalena is a chance for us to express our culture though dancing as well as chanting,” he told me backstage. “I want people to experience Hawai`i’s history, beauty of the music and chant as well as the legends in a crash course hour and 18 minutes. You can’t really get that anywhere else.” Kawai`ola Sellars agreed, adding that it was important for people to appreciate Hawaiian culture. Later, Caro Walker, the show’s Production Manager, met me in the hallway and guided me through the dark and into dressing rooms. She led me to the ladies’ dressing room first. There, four women sat talking and applying make-up to their faces. They invited me in and I asked them what they wanted people to get from the show. Makalani Franco Francis, a striking young woman who plays Pele, said she hoped people would understand that “The History of our people is a big part of our lifestyle. I would just hope that people would want to indulge themselves in learning more about our culture after seeing the show.” Cora Yamagata, a Japanese woman sitting next to Makalani, plays a woman in the immigrant scene that performed Butoh, the Japanese dance technique imitating a corpse that’s standing upright. She explained how in studying the art form it brought her full circle back to her own roots. And that many times after the show, audience members who had worked in the sugar cane fields would come up to her relating their experiences and “how suffocated and overwhelmed they felt under the tall stalks of the sugar cane.” Seated next to me was Ana Prada,
own race or language,” he said. “So when they ask me I tell them, ‘If it intrigues you, find out more.’ I want people to get that Hawai`i has a culture and that it is alive.” My last stop was the musicians. In `Ulalena, music is the first thing you hear and plays a critical role in the show. So Walker hurried me upstairs. There I found Anthony Natividad, the effusive nose flute player who was well versed in current Hawaiian issues. He’s been with the show since the beginning. “When I heard about what `Ulalena was I made sure that the bamboo that I got for the flutes was from the region where the rain falls in Makawao,” he said. We talked about his feeling that the show was a lot of hard work until I heard a conch blow from the theatre announcing the beginning of the show. The usher kindly escorted me to my seat where I looked around at the packed, mostly tourist audience who had no idea what they
were in for. As I settled into my seat, I thought back to a conversation I had with Andrea Torres, an original cast member who plays Hina. I had asked her what it was that made the performance so unique. “There is a movement happening in Hawai`i and `Ulalena is a part of that movement,” she said. “We are all channeling the spirit of the show which is based on the mythology and history of the islands.” The drums started to echo, reminding me that I was witnessing change in motion. There is a Hawaiian word, kaona, which translates as hidden or figurative meaning. I knew that it was most likely this kaona that the audience would consume. As I heard the waves crashing, signifying the birth of the islands, I started to remember Hawai`i’s resilience and knew that `Ulalena was a seed planted for Hawai`i’s future. MTW

food. Gena started in on the salad and I took a bite from the sandwich. The side Caesar was tangy with garlic, while the baby greens and tomatoes on the sandwich were fresh and added just enough to the meal without drowning out the flavor of baby baked brie on baguette. The Quinoa Salad was equally awesome. And the basil vinaigrette was creamy and just strong enough with balsamic to spark my taste buds. Gena and I agreed that everything was tasty and delicious. We also decided to call the food “stylish hippie”—offering healthy and veggie options while remaining upscale by including premium ingredients.
After reading the menu board on a recent visit, my friend Gena and I took a seat at a two-top near the entrance of the gallery. The door was open to the gallery, so every once in awhile a delicious airconditioned breeze cooled us down. It was peaceful outside, with nothing more than the sound of birds and rustling leaves to disturb the tranquility while a small chicken in the “Aaron Carter stage”— older than a chick but younger than an adult— ran around. We started with a cup of the soup of the day, which was ginger rice. We also wanted a salad, but there were too many choices. There’s the Taro Salad and the Asian Salad, but we were mostly interested in the Quinoa Salad, mainly because she’d never had quinoa before and I couldn’t be certain I remembered it correctly. USO Returns to Maui
Beautiful Conundrum
Thursday (Sept. 21), 6:30 p.m. at the Wailuku Public Library
Saturday (Sept. 23), 7-11 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel
[WWII music revue] Maui and the rest of Hawai`i sat under the thumb of martial law during World War II, but life wasn’t all bad. In and amidst the legions of soldiers, sailors and marines stationed here, USO (United Service Organizations) entertainers put on shows periodically. In conjunction with a traveling Smithsonian Institution poster exhibition “Produce for Victory: Posters on the American Home Front 19411945” that runs at the Wailuku Library through Oct. 20, tonight the Baldwin Theater Guild will showcase song and dance routines that were popular at USO shows during the war. In addition, Lisa Owen’s “Moonglow” Swing Band performs live music and local author Gail Ainsworth will talk about what Word War II USOs were like on Maui. The event is free, and there will be refreshments. For more information, call the library at 2435766. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
[ART/MUSIC] This latest of Café Marc Aurel exhibits features its usual eclectic array of known and unknown artistes magnifique—this time, as they express abstraction by way of “Beautiful Conundrums.” And for an added bonus, local folk rock singer-songwriter Joe Benedett will be performing his upbeat solo acoustic set. Not just another art show shlebb, Benedett’s played with band members from the likes of Paul McCartney and Wings, The Beach Boys, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, and others. This is a double whammy for the price of… well, none. No conundrum here! See, there’s NO COVER. Café Marc Aurel is located at 28 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-0852.

Sunday (Sept. 24) 2 p.m. at Casanova [ACOUSTIC MUSIC/BENEFIT] It’s time to pull yourself away from the television and record the game. After taking a little month and a half break, Mana’o Radio’s entertaining benefit “Upcountry Sundays” is back at Casanova with your favorite acoustic sounds. This weekend brings Hawaiian soul group Lawa, ramblin’ man singer-songwriter Jordan Kolton, and talk story extraordinaire Jeff Gere. Once again, this reminds me of a joke. How many musicians does it take to screw in a light bulb? One, two, one, two, three, four! Ha ha. I am hilarious. Casanova is located at 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-0220. [HEIDI KING]

Hailed as Jet Li’s final martial arts epic, Jet Li’s Fearless is a unique story about Chinese historical figure Huo Yuanjia who rose to fame in China before disgracing himself and bringing tragedy upon his family, only to later redeem himself and his country in a national tournament. The movie opens on a competition promoted by the Foreign Chamber of Commerce in 1910 in which Yuanjia (Li) must fight four opponents in succession, each representing a different faction of foreign influence in China.
Jet Li’s Fearless
★★★★★ Rated PG-13/104 mins.
The thrilling fight sequence segues to Yuanjia’s backstory as the asthmatic son of a wushu master who attempted to shield his weak son from the skills he taught others. Director/producer Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) and action choreographer Yuen Wo Peng (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2) pack the film with twice the action of a typical kung fu action movie and still render a poignant parable of human experience. After his father loses a public match, the young Yuanjia loses a fight to a bully and vows never again to lose. Yuanjia remains true to his oath as he diligently trains in solitude for years before battling against fighters from all around his region, exhibiting an outsized ego to match his increasing fame. With his best friend and trusted accountant beside him, Yuanjia invariably takes on disciples and dilettantes interested in taking advantage of the free food and drinks that he offers them. Yuanjia’s hubris backfires when another local wushu master beats up one of his students, and the revenge-seeking
Yuanjia interrupts the man’s birthday celebration to challenge him to a contest that will serve as the action centerpiece of the movie. As party guests flee, Yuanjia and his opponent wield mighty Daoshu swords against one another in a breathtaking duel that is one of the most electrifying fight sequences ever filmed. Before the combat is over, the swords will be chipped apart and the men will resort to their most lethal barehanded techniques. The aftermath of the fight sends Yuanjia on a self-imposed exile that finds him aided by a blind rural farm girl named Moon (Sun Li) who gradually helps the disconsolate man restore his sense of self. It’s during this second act that the unspoken meaning of “wushu” surfaces in the subtext of the narrative and we witness Yuanjia’s competitive nature put in check. For all its phenomenal action-packed combat scenes that feature rarely seen weapons such as the three-section staff and the spear, the movie meticulously fulfills its emotional and thematic context to its historical subject. Jet Li thoroughly inhabits his character’s spiritual transformation with a transparent and uninhibited performance that sticks with you long after the rush of the visual action has subsided. Director Ronny Yu eschews wires and quick cuts in favor of allowing the audience to savor the full scope of Li’s estimable skill set. In clarifying his public statement about the movie marking the end of his career as a martial arts star, Jet Li has stated that it is merely the last film in which he will practice the strenuous traditional wushu style of masters like Huo Yuanjia. At the age of 43, Jet’s body won’t allow him the hyperbolic displays of athleticism that the genre demands. He will however continue to perform roles that utilize his fantastic skills in films like the upcoming Rogue opposite Jason Statham, where Li plays an enigmatic assassin. Jet Li’s Fearless isn’t just a martial arts movie; it is a truly great one. MTW

men with the “SS” on their chests all in different colors. “SS men were the worst of the worst in Hitler’s Germany,” says Smith. “It’s symbolism, but it’s tongue in cheek because they are very non-threatening caricatures.” Smith says he brings this kind of humor throughout the show by “removing the seriousness” and “twisting things around to build contradictions.” The other side of the gallery is artwork made up of clay in earth tones. There are four sections of four square white pillars with Freedman’s works perched on top. The

room to Ron Smith and the right to Stephen Freedman. Smith’s works are all bright colors and clean-cut designs. One display takes up most of an entire wall with 20 Buddhas in a sort of pyramid formation. Most of the Buddhas are plain black silhouettes, but on the bottom row there are some on the end that are neon lit outlines in red and blue. One of which seems to be bouncing away. The work is “Untitled” but in parenthesis reads “Twenty Buddhas with one or so reaching enlightenment.” Buddhas are one of Smith’s signature characters in this exhibit, as well as flamethrowing fire extinguishers, people with lightning bolt-SS’s on their chests, and rocks. One work is made up of six neon outlines of

pieces are pottery that has been altered so that they are bent, torn or give the impression of dripping or melting. Smaller pots are squished into the larger pots. “The vessel became the body for me,” says Freedman. “I manipulate it to change, move, and grow as our bodies do.” In a large piece in the center of the room, Stephen Freedman has stacked pots of all sizes with the largest ones sort of making the totem while smaller ones push out from every direction. Some of the pots seem to be dripping even smaller pots. Freedman says he caught himself making “smaller and smaller vessels that are part of a larger and larger whole.” Near the front of the room are the tall thin totems, all slightly curving. They are pale in color and look to be made of cement. Although mostly gray, what made this piece so interesting was the fact that each totem had a bit of blue, even if you have to search for it. It turns out these totems are made from mud loosely packed into a mold and fired. The blue comes from copper thrown or left in the kiln. In front of a half wall is a piece shaped like a vase standing approximately four feet tall. Words have been cut out completely. This work is titled “Moments.” If you walk circles around it, you will read a quote from his book Roberto’s Head, “Amongst moments within the Pantheon are moments such as these,” which trails off as it reaches the floor. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Manatees are smarter than previously thought. What we thought of as endearingly dumb, shortsighted and gentle cows of the sea are actually more engaged and intelligent than we were able to see at first. Perhaps it’s because we’re naturally drawn towards faster animals, like leopards, hawks and sharks. But there’s virtue to be had in slow things, too. Keep that in mind this week; the best parts and people are likely to be gentle, peaceful and unhurried, not attention-grabbing, clever and fast. Avoid the latter and seek the former. They’re just what you need.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I love being startled. I couldn’t tell you how many times my neighbor has somehow surprised me on the stairs, making my heart pound and my knees pleasantly weak. It’s always good for a laugh afterwards, which is really the best part. You, on the other hand, tend to detest real surprises, so you don’t always react with such good humor and pleasure when they manage to sneak up on you. However, I suggest you marshal whatever ability you do have to laugh at these little surprises, because you’re likely to be subject to a lot of them—if not this week, then in the weeks to come.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I was sitting in a friend’s house, sweating and wishing I could cool off. Imagine my pleasure when I literally reached out my right arm and my hand fell upon a lovely bamboo fan. What you need is within such easy reach it’s ridiculous, only you’ll never see it if you’re looking for it. It’ll only be there when you hold your hand out, truly without expectation, and see what drops into it. Sounds easy, right? No, it’s actually way harder than you’d think. Nevertheless, I think you have a good chance of pulling it off.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I’m working on a novel and today I realized I had to kill one of my beloved characters. You, too, have been avoiding a hard outcome you’d rather not face. I don’t blame you. You’re worse off; what you have to do isn’t as bad as what I did, but who you have to do it to is made of flesh and blood, with a soul and emotions as real as your own, not someone you made up. But that doesn’t change things. Luckily, you can choose how. I had to let my character die cruelly; it made the best story. You can afford to be kinder. Make the cut, but do it as gently as you can.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Apparently, a very high number of rescue workers who helped after the World Trade Center fell are now suffering from a variety of respiratory illnesses. It’s not altogether surprising, given the kinds of toxins they were breathing in at that time. What’s shocking is that many of them are having trouble getting appropriate medical care for these problems. People shouldn’t necessarily be rewarded for doing the right thing, but they ought to be taken care of after they’ve done so, not screwed over. Remember that, this week, when you’re in a position to give someone the help they need and deserve.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s like you’re hunting for that perfect gift, but you have no idea what it is. So essentially you’re wandering around aimlessly and hoping the right thing will somehow hit you over the head and surprise you with its utter perfection. Surprisingly, this strategy actually works for you Fish but it depends on keeping your mind absolutely blank. Even a vague idea (“Maybe a book…”) can prevent you from noticing the exact right thing, because you’ll be at least halfway searching for a book, instead of the shower curtain or shoes that would actually constitute the most apt gift. Avoid thinking; it’ll just get in your way.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Radio has never sounded so good for
West Maui “Enhanced Radio Signal” Tune in to your favorite stations in West Maui as we provide you with alternative frequencies
Okay, it’s compromise time. You’ve accepted that, but you’re not sure the other person has. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about that. All we know for sure is that if you stay where you are, nothing’s going to happen. Do you really want to remain in that lame place? No, I didn’t think so. So what if you can’t see what the other person is up to? You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do: Act on faith and meet the person halfway. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when s/he’s already there, waiting for you.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) “It’s my way or the highway.” Damn, you’ve always wanted to say that in earnest. Well, this week you’ll get the chance. You’re able to call the shots here, and all those involved will listen. You may not like the choices they make—more might select the highway than you’d imagined. It’s about time you knew for certain where certain people stand. If they decide to walk away, that’s their call, and you can deal with that later. Wooing them back with a compromise is certainly an option; starting with a compromise, however, in this case is not.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) It’s like you’ve got this annoying tickle in your throat, but no matter how much you cough or drink, it won’t go away. I hate to compare a person to that phenomenon, but it’s kind of accurate. However, the strategies you’re contemplating to get rid of the annoyance are something equivalent to surgically removing your own neck just to address the dry tickle within it. There’s got to be something less drastic you can do. This week figure out what that is, because there’s no need for the kind of melodrama you’d enact otherwise.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) We both know the problems you have with letting go. Even when you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that the only hope you have of getting what you want is by utterly releasing all desire for it, it’s sometimes almost impossible to do so. You grip it, crablike, until it’s dead and truly beyond your reach. Now, you ought to be incredibly busy this week with cleaning out your life from the bottom up, but please spare a moment for your soul as well. Practice release, on both counts. There’s a lot of crap— inside and outside you—that you’d be better off without.

It doesn’t matter if you bring a photo with you to the hairdresser. It won’t matter what well-honed eloquence you wield to describe your desired new do. They won’t get it right, not this week. This isn’t just advice about your hair; just about anything where you rely on someone else to manifest your vision is likely to go awry at the moment. It might be best to put those projects on hold for a while, or risk them going in entirely the wrong direction. Don’t chance it. You’ve got plenty of other things you can work on.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) It’s not that you’re not spiritual. Most Virgos have a strong soulful streak; it’s just not as obvious as it would be on a Cancer or Pisces. You just don’t have time to go stand around in church or sit in the corner staring at a wall. You’re too busy for that shit. No, you’ve got to get your spiritual groove on while on the go. I get that, but squeezing it in somewhere is something you’ve got to do. Now. Waiting in traffic or on the train, inside elevators—find a time to click off your cellphone and get in a few minutes of quiet time with your higher power. If you don’t get in touch now, they might cut you off completely, and that would suck.

Taking A Bite No matter where you sit in New York you feel the vibrations of great times and tall deeds, of queer people and events and undertakings. – E.B. White Vacation. Is there a more harmonious, three-syllable word in existence? I think not. And it all starts at the airport. It’s truly the best place to get a sense of the city or town you’re arriving to or departing from. One of my favorite things to do is just sit and observe people at the busy airport bar, casually striking up a conversation with someone on their way to a visit a relative, or attend a business conference, or return home. At the Kahului airport bar, I talked to a gregarious man from the Big Island, officially on Maui for work. But as we discussed the lackluster dating scene on his home turf, I got the distinct impression he was unofficially looking to import some exotics. In Los Angeles, I cruised past trendy airport boutiques stocked with the latest in designer impulse ware, and nearly got run over by a buxom beanpole beauty with her botoxerific boyfriend in tow. In Chicago, people are boisterous and sporty. I had a bit more time to spare there, so I sat at a bar called Prairie Dog and ordered a charbroiled hot dog, “Chicago-style”—which apparently means, load that sucker up with a mountain of sliced cucumber and tomato, whole jalapeño peppers, red onions, mustard, neon green relish and pickle spears. It was like a piñata exploded on my hot dog. The bartender—Ms. Gray—was telling a couple to my left about the kid who just walked by and said hello to everyone in the kitchen. She was proud that he had apparently won several medals at a recent Special Olympics. “And he said, ‘Ms. Gray, I love her—I even gave her my gold medal and she turned it down!’” said Ms. Gray, chuckling. “Now what woman would turn down a jury? He may be slow but he ain’t crazy! Sweetest thing…” At that point, a man approached the bar, interrupting conversation. “Whattya got in cans?” he asked. “We don’t do no cans here,” said Ms. Gray. “That’s Wisconsin.” So after 13 hours of flight and airport time, I arrived in tact to Newark, New Jersey, and met up with the Amy and Randall wedding clan in anticipation of further traveling—this time, by RV to upstate New York. I had never seen so many cornfields as when I sat on the bed for the five-hour journey 14 of us embarked on. Bouckville is a small town near Hamilton—home of Colgate University—comprised almost entirely of antique shops. The wedding was to take place in a quaint bed and breakfast called Ye Olde Landmark Tavern. Pictures of dead presidents adorned the hallways, along with images from the town in the early 1800’s—which remarkably, did not look as though it had changed much. The ceremony was glorious and perfect, complete with a blushing, eight-month pregnant bride, her flushed but happy groom, and a handful of seashells used in metaphorical symbolism by the reverend—Amy’s mom—depicting the bonds and timelessness of love. After the reception, a select few of us took leave and retired to the RV, where a rollicking karaoke session commenced. My girl companions and I scoffed initially. “Karaoke is dumb,” we cried. “I can’t sing,” we declared. But then after the boys botched Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” I grabbed the mic. “Holiday,” “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Let’s Get Physical” and “Hello” later, somebody turned off the sound—much to the dismay of my newly found karaoke compulsion. We called it a night. But no wedding party is complete until you wake up in the middle of the night with the drunken brother of the bride sleepily peeing on you. Once the RV dropped me back off in Jersey, three of us took a cab into Manhattan. It was an exciting ride. My very first New York cabbie was a hilarious and engaging Russian man who liked to complain loudly about President Bush, ignorant visitors and other drivers, all the while laughing maniacally at I’m not sure what. My companions cowered inside the taxi as our cabbie jerked and barreled his way through the congestion and bright lights. But I faced forward excitedly and tried to see the sky past the metal and cement structures like towering alien gods that seemed to stretch straight up into the next atmosphere. Already, I sensed a city of possibilities and couldn’t wait for the thrills to begin. I practically leapt out of the cab and skipped down the block, careful not to trip over my naiveté and the occasional homeless person. I was to stay with Ashley—East Coast native and one-time Maui Time employee—in her new flat in the Upper West Side. As I approached her building, the doorman greeted me and led me into the marble-covered lobby, announcing my arrival by phone to my dear friend. Seeing her apartment was an exercise in envy retention. The place is an expansive, two-bedroom, two-bath layout covered in hardwood floors with brand-new everything sporting stunning views of downtown Manhattan and the river. It turns out Miss A landed a position as personal assistant to a successful—and very amenable—editor and writer of textbooks. “It’s kind of like a Devil Wears Prada situation,” said Ashley, “without the devil.” Needless to say, if I didn’t already love the girl, I would hate her.
