Dear Tree Care Industry Association press release: I think my new neighbor is an ax murderer. It’s just a hunch I have, given that he’s kind of secretive, twitches a lot and recently killed a guy with an axe the other night in front of me. What should I do? -Concerned in Carson Dear Carson: You may think that the approach of the end of the growing season means you can stop worrying about the trees in your landscape. Think again! Fall is one of the best times to examine the safety and health of your trees, say experts in tree care. Why? With the leaves off, cracks, defects and deadwood are easier to see. Also, with winter storms approaching, hazards should be removed now—before they damage property. Dear Tree Care Industry Association press release: I’ve been dating this guy for a year now, and I’m really over it. He never speaks to me anymore, sex is practically non-existent and he hasn’t bathed in I don’t know how long. I want to break it off, but he’s been in a coma for the past six weeks and I don’t know if he can hear me. What do I do? -Perplexed in Pacoima Dear Perplexed: “Most trees can be pruned yearround,” says Peter Gerstenberger, senior advisor for safety, standards & compliance for the Tree Care Industry Association, “And certain operations are easier to do in the fall, when dead branches are easily seen and removed.” Some homeowners worry that arborists will not be able to determine deadwood on a tree when the leaves are off. “On the contrary,” says Gerstenberger, “This is the best time for an arborist to locate deadwood by looking for changes in color, fungus growth, cracks, and other symptoms that can help them make this determination. Since the leaves are off, the view of the entire tree’s architecture is clear and a thorough check can be performed.” Dear Tree Care Industry Association press release:
You’re not really a human being, right? And please hurry with your answer, because I’ve got money riding on it. -Skeptical in Skokie Dear Skeptical: Pruning is much more than the simple act of sawing off limbs. Proper pruning is an art based on scientific principles of plant physiology. At its most basic level, pruning trees involves removing damaged, dead or structurally weak limbs, which will improve a tree’s health and reduce the chances of personal or property damage caused by falling limbs. Professional arborists have the capability to make the tree safer and more attractive by pruning live growth as well. Proper pruning encourages growth, increases flower and fruit production, improves plant health, repairs damage and helps add aesthetic appeal to a tree. Pruning at the right time and in the right way is critical, since it is possible to kill a tree through neglect or over-pruning.

Big companies often use their power to say things in public, but sometimes they get cagey and exercise their power by not saying things and then watching everyone get jittery and scatter. That’s the case wit this week’s announcement from Japanese railway giant Seibu that they’re selling Makena Resort. What that means for the giant development plans pending before the Maui County Council—to say nothing of the company’s existing Maui Prince Hotel—is impossible to say. The Sept. 22 Maui News ran an article showing how everyone from the ILWU people to the slow growth organization Maui Tomorrow are going nuts trying to figure out the ramifications of the impending sale, but it’s a pretty safe bet that whoever buys Makena Resort will want some serious condo and hotel construction. MTW
Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said on her reelection website (www.lindalingle.com) about the Sept. 23 Primary Election: “I encourage you to vote in the Republican Primary to guarantee a better, more balanced political system in Hawai`i. A strong two-party system produces better legislation, and is truly in the best interest of all the people of Hawai`i.”
What she didn’t say: Two-party systems aren’t bad—when there are substantial ideological differences between the two parties. Given the stratospheric levels of corporate political action committee money both the Democrats and Republicans consume each campaign, candidate statements and actions are too often indistinguishable from each other. But in a pluralistic environment, where multiple political parties gain legislative representation based on their vote percentages, virtually all interests can get an official seat at the table. For true “balance,” you have to look to Europe, where people don’t seem frightened of letting Greens and Fascists sit in Parliament alongside the traditional right and left.

Case Closed Our take on the 2006 Primary Election
Photo: Mark D’Antonio
By now everyone on the island who gives a damn which human beings sit in Hawai`i’s two U.S. Senate seats knows that 81-year-old Daniel Akaka handily beat back U.S. Representative Ed Case (D, 2nd District)—just as all the big polls were saying he was going to do. The upstart backbencher’s argument that Akaka was too old and ineffective was no match for the wily incumbent’s considerable financial and union support. As a result, Akaka gets the honor and privilege of going on to the November election where he will presumably slaughter right-wing state Representative Cynthia Thielen (R, Kailua), drafted by the Republican Party Central Committee to take over the nomination won by Midweek columnist Jerry Coffee, who dropped out of the race months ago following emergency heart surgery (and they say the Democrats run a political machine!). Speaking of troubled Midweek columnists, pro-Iraq War Republican Bob Hogue is the GOP’s choice to take on Democratic nominee and former Lt. Governor Mazie Hirono in Ed Case’s old 2nd District Congressional seat. Hogue’s got a tough fight against him, considering that Hirono’s liberal views are very popular and there are just way more Democrats than Republicans in the district. In the big state races, labor favorites Randy Iwase (a retired state Senator) and Malama Solomon (an OHA trustee) won the nominations for Governor and Lt. Governor respectively, dashing hopes that the party would nominate far more progressive candidates like Waianae Harbor Master William Aila and attorney David Henkin. Of
course, the unions weren’t impervious to defeat—Stephen West, a Wailea bartender, had both ILWU and Sierra Club backing, but still lost to longtime Kihei activist and former Maui Planning Commissioner Joe Bertram III in the Democratic 11th District state Representative race. Of course, this means Bertram will now presumably have to talk about something other than greenways and bikeways now that he’s taking on Republican Tony Fisher. In the land of minimal voter interest—I’m speaking of course of the Westside—a major upset took place when first term 10th District Representative Kam Tanaka lost his primary race to political newcomer Angus McKelvey. It wasn’t even close, either, with McKelvey winning 1,359 votes, which was nearly twice as much as Tanaka’s pathetic 689 votes. For McKelvey—son of
Lahaina News founder and Republican activist Joan McKelvey—this was a far better result than the 2004 primary when Tanaka narrowly beat his wife Greta “Mo Bettah” McKelvey for the Democratic nomination. McKelvey now faces Republican physician Ben Azman, who beat former Maui County Republican Party chairwoman Kay Ghean by a mere 20 votes, 300 to 280, nearly prompting her to ask for a recount. And now we come to the saddest news of the night: James “Kimo” Apana’s disappointing third— might as well be last—place finish in the 10-candidate Maui County Mayor’s race. We’ll never know if Kimo’s hilarious insistence in The Maui News three days before the election that the fat Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and Alexander & Baldwin PAC contributions he was devouring weren’t “corporate money,” but it would
be fitting if that did in the former king of big money politics on Maui. Though even I can’t bring myself to think that we won’t see Apana again. In any case, county voters now get a showdown between termedout Upcounty County Councilwoman Charmaine Tavares (8,701 votes) and incumbent Mayor Alan Arakawa (7,689 votes). They’re both promising a clean race, but hopefully that’s just early election hype. Termed-out Wailuku Councilman Dain Kane placed fourth in that race, brilliantly meeting the expectations of most seasoned observers of Maui politics. Water Board Chairman Mike Victorino—benefiting from Chamber of Commerce and `Ohana Coalition endorsements—was the big vote-getter in the race for Kane’s old seat, beating second-place finisher and t-shirt screener Rudy Cabebe by nearly 15,000 votes. The race between those two in November should be a real nail-biter. As for the fourperson battle over retiring council member Bob Carroll’s East Maui seat, about the only thing that matters is that longtime political activist/first time candidate Lucienne de Naie lost. Had she placed in the top two and then gone on to win in November, her activist tendencies and anti-developer passions could have changed the way the County Council does business. Instead, Bill Medeiros— Carroll’s handpicked successor—will take on part-time farmer Sam Kalalau. As for Akaku TV personality Nick Nikhilananda, his feeble fourth-place finish arguably stripped votes away from de Naie—who came within just 304 votes of Kalalau—and now gives him a statewide campaign record of seven races and seven losses. His greatest gift to the progressive, politics he supposedly holds so dear would be to announce his refusal to ever again seek elected office on Maui. MTW

ehbrah@mauitime.com To the girl who threw soda at me while we were watching the movie The Protector: What, no one can laugh at a movie anymore? If there’s a problem with people being loud, then you ask if they could keep it down. You’d be surprised how people usually react kindly to politeness. What you shouldn’t do is get so passive-aggressive with your comments. “Oh, you think it’s funny?” you asked me. Why yes, I did think it was funny—hence my laughter throughout the film. I really liked how you ran into the bathroom once you saw me, too. Honestly, your reaction was a little over the top. Are you going to throw soda at all the people who challenge you? What are you gonna do when the soda runs out? Be a sad little bitch? But I’m sure you were like that before, so I guess you‘ll always be a bitch.

Shot in the Dark The Maui County Liquor Control Board of Adjudication recently fined the South Shore Tiki Lounge in Kihei $2,000 for serving an intoxicated customer. Strangely, about the only point not contested by either side was that when she walked into the Tiki Lounge sometime around midnight on Oct. 17, 2005, Pikake Shores was a “3-4” on a sliding scale of drunkenness, with one possessing the sobriety of a Catholic School nun and 10 being Nick Nolte. But what exactly Shores drank at the Tiki Lounge—the critical question of the complaint—is very hard to say.
KIHEI KALAMA VILLAGE 875-0303
Ukuleles
LC Watch
Bar manger Renie Hamayelian emphatically testified that he served Shores one shot of Patron and nothing else. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas disagreed. Reading straight from LC Investigator David Olsten’s Nov. 21, 2005 report, Temas told the Adjudication Board that once inside the Tiki Lounge, Shores consumed “five shots of Patron” and “three to five bottles of Heineken”—a huge amount of alcohol that he insisted Shores downed “in an hour.” The problem is that Temas read from just part of Olsten’s report, the first page, in fact. But further on in the report—which is based almost entirely on Shores’ statement— Olsten reported that while at the Tiki Lounge that night Shores consumed far less alcohol: “2 shots of Patron tequila and 4 Heineken beers.” While there’s no question that four Heinekens is within “three to five,” there’s a huge difference—trust me on this one, people—between two shots of Patron and “five.” Yet this considerable discrepancy in the report never came out during the Sept. 7 Adjudication Board hearing. Had Tiki Lounge pled not guilty instead of no contest, this point would undoubtedly have been a core part of their case. But after the hearing, Tiki Lounge general manager Terry Richardson said that the establishment was gunshy following their unsuccessful attempt to fight their last case before the board and didn’t want to repeat the experience.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM
includes Hawai`i and eight other western states—into itty bitty pieces. Okay, two pieces: there would be a slimmer 9th District comprising the traditionally liberal California, Hawai`i and a few Pacific islands, and then there would be a new 12th District containing Oregon, Washington and the far more conservative states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Arizona. The reasoning is ostensibly the size of the district itself, which holds 28 judgeships and 54 million people, but a story in today’s Honolulu Advertiser also holds up the possibility that Republicans are just tired of the 9th’s progressive rulings. Because if there’s anything that’s ruining this country for those who want to invade Middle Eastern nations, lock away prisoners in secret jails and then try them in kangaroo courts, it’s the liberal judges of the 9th District.
WEDNESDAY, Sept. 20 We’re all cool with the big Kaheawa Wind farm up on the ridge overlooking Ma`alaea, right? I mean, we all love clean power, and there are few things cleaner than wind spinning turbines. But the look of the thing: all those white turbines standing in a neat little row stretching across the otherwise barren ridgeline—we’re all happy and okay with that, right? Good, because today’s Honolulu StarBulletin says the company just put a proposal before the state Board of Natural Resources asking permission to nearly double the number of windmills up there, from 20 to 38. Whether this actually happens is still—forgive me—up in the air. That’s because state Forestry and Wildlife officials apparently are still waiting to see the finished environmental assessment of the wind farm’s 20 existing turbines. Of course, the windmills—clean and efficient power generators though they are—probably wouldn’t be so much of an eyesore if they were painted more like the surrounding hillside (in this case, charred black) but would be significantly less friendly towards low-flying aircraft. And that would not be right.
THURSDAY, Sept. 21 Republicans from President George W. Bush on up sure love to talk about spreading democracy around the world, but when a military coup topples Thailand’s loathsome but democratically elected prime minister, they utter few complaints. Probably because they’re too busy working themselves into a lather over a new plan to chop the 9th District U.S. Court of Appeals—which
Well, it’s official: today Mayor Alan Arakawa signed into law the new liquor rule that says establishments no longer have to card every single person who wants to buy booze. They still have to card people who look younger than 21 but for the most part our island’s older folks will no longer have to show their drivers licenses to every bartender and server they come across. “Although I understand that the department’s efforts were laudably intended to ensure that underage or impaired persons not be allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages,” Arakawa said in a press release sent out today, “I am very happy that the Liquor Control Commission has responded to my request to reconsider their earlier ruling and to once again exercise common sense in the application of the law and not otherwise interfere with law abiding citizens.” The new rule takes affect Oct. 2. Don’t you just love election years?
SATURDAY, Sept. 23 Goodnight, Mr. Apana, wherever you are.
SUNDAY, Sept. 24 Got an email today from Ray Masters. “Death of a landmark,” is how it begins. “September 16th 2006 marked the end of an era for the Maui windsurfing community, when at 11:45 Rope Tree fell to its death. Rope Tree has been a landmark at Camp One for as long as anyone can remember, sitting at the water’s edge and providing the perfect platform for almost every photo-shoot ever held there. Kids aged 3-90, residents and visitors alike have loved the rope swing. Summer 2006 has seen the highest levels of beach erosion at Camp One in a decade. Rope Tree was not the first to fall. It will probably not be the last. One thing is for sure; it will be the most missed.” Those wishing to share their “condolences” are asked to visit www.mauiwindcam.com/ropetree. I

RIP Rope Tree think Rope Tree would have wanted it that way.
MONDAY, Sept. 25 As of noon today there are 15 condolences for Rope Tree at the Maui Wind Cam website, including this poem, submitted by Robert and Mary Jo Masters’ dog Kachina, which I excerpt here because it more than captures Rope Tree’s charm, wit and humility: Oh tree, oh tree!/You stood so tall, so free./I yearn for ye, like a piece of Brie./Why oh why did you have to flee?… Now where oh where will I take a pee/After my morning bowl of Earl Grey tea?/I know not now—all is lost for me,/Since Matt and Kev knocked over my favorite pissing spot.
TUESDAY, Sept. 26 And now for another installment in my occasional series of rants against the Bush Administration’s No Child Left Behind program. Two days ago the Honolulu Advertiser ran a tiny story telling parents that there’s still a little time to get in those
“opt-out forms” for their kids. You know, so school officials won’t give your child’s personal contact information to military recruiters. Because this is America and we want our public school teachers and administrators to play a big role in the Military Industrial Complex. We want them to teach math and science and history and geography and the infield fly rule, and then at the end of the day after the kids have gone home, hand over all their students’ files to Pentagon recruiters. That’s the Bush Administration’s price for these schools to stay on the public dole. Hey, you think it’s easy getting people into uniform when there are a couple actual shooting wars—neither of which happens to be going particularly well—leading the evening news every single night? That’s what we get for electing George W. Bush, who is every bit the “The Edumacation President” he thinks he is. Anthony Pignataro wonders why Hollywood doesn’t make more movies with all-chimp casts. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD CARRY-ON BLUES Just after the Aug. 10 travel restrictions were imposed, British Airways refused to allow disabled New Zealand runner Kate Horan—on her way to the paralympic world championships in the Netherlands—to carry on her prosthetic leg, as she had long been allowed to do. Her checked-baggage leg was then lost in the chaos at Heathrow airport, and the prosthetic’s manufacturer scrambled to make Horan a new one. The leg was found a week later, and at press time, Horan had won at least one medal. Oh, and the Transportation Security Administration’s ban on carry-on liquids, gels and ointments apparently does not apply to small quantities of “personal lubricants,” such as sex aid gels.
LEAVE NO ANIMAL UNEATEN Colombia’s exports of “hormiga culona” (“big-butt queen ants”) are down this year due to a harsh winter and aggressive lizards and birds, creating steep prices for chocolate-dipped ants in London and ant-based sauces and spreads at home, according to an August Associated Press dispatch. And a July Reuters story on the Explorers Club in New York City called it virtually the only place where gourmets can enjoy such delicacies as scorpion, cricket, tarantula and maggot, and pigeon pate, as well as odd parts of common livestock. Worms are also prized if they’ve been “evacuated” on oatmeal for a few days before serving.

And electrician Paul Trotman, 51, was arrested in Clay County, Fla., in August after allegedly rigging an electrical device to shock a 3 1/2-year-old boy who lived with Trotman and his wife, after Trotman got fed up that the boy was constantly urinating on electrical outlets just to see sparks fly.

CREME DE LA WEIRD A recent documentary produced for Australia’s Channel 4 (and described in a July story in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph) caught up with a Ukrainian woman, now 23, who had been forgotten by her mother and father and raised by dogs until age 8. Oxana Malaya— one of about 100 known feral children—has the tested mental age of 6, stilted speech and an uncoordinated gait, and still buries any gifts she receives and runs into the woods when she is upset. On camera, Malaya barked, ran on all fours, panted with her tongue out and dried herself off by shaking.

or the last two years, Michele Anderson has represented South Maui on the Maui County Council. She’s also chaired the council’s Water Resource Committee, which conducts hearings and makes recommendations on the island’s water usage and future sources. Lately she’s gone head to head with Mayor Alan Arakawa over his desire to pump drinking water from the Hamakuopoko Wells despite the fact that the well has long been contaminated with pesticides and must be chemically treated. I sat down with her recently to get her thoughts on her first term in office as well as the difficulties posed by highway traffic, land development and water usage. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Let me start off with traffic. I know a lot of people who are losing patience with commute times around here. It seems that traffic between Central Maui and Lahaina has passed a tipping point and is much worse than I can remember. Is that true? MICHELE ANDERSON: Oh yes. For any land use approval, you’re required to have an impact analysis. Every approval requires a traffic impact analysis. We have to recognize that we’re on an island. It’s irresponsible for agencies to allow traffic to exceed maximum carrying capacity. Honoapi`ilani Highway has exceeded maximum carrying capacity. The Department of Transportation recently admitted it, despite the fact that they’ve allowed all this development to occur without adequate mitigation. We can’t keep doing all this development without adding to the road system. It’s a public safety issue—what about people who are trying to get to the hospital? Is there some kind of traffic mitigation coming soon? I hope the state and county could move forward on developing the cane haul road along Honoapi`ilani Highway from the Pali to Lahaina Town. Since there’s no active ag there, it’s very simple for the county or state to condemn that road and use it for immediate relief. They could possibly institute a contraflow program similar to the one on Haleakala Highway for the morning and afternoon commute. But then again it’s not just commute times anymore— the traffic happens all the time. What about all the land development that’s exacerbating the problem? I think the situation has escalated to such an unsafe level that it would be irresponsible to allow further development without a resolution to the traffic problem first. Okay. What’s the most important thing you’ve done in office in the last two years? As chair of the Water Resource Committee I’d have to say the most important thing we’ve done in the last term is ban the use of Hamakuopoko Well water for human consumption. The future growth of Maui depends on the development of water. We have to develop clean sources for public use instead of developing wells under active agriculture. Where do we put our priorities? Are we spending $7.5 million for use of contaminated water? How many clean wells could we drill for $7.5 million? I’m pretty sure we’re the only county in the state that’s considered the health of its citizens in developing new sources of water. Oahu has many contaminated wells, but they don’t have any other choices. We do. This sends a message to the big landowners: look for other sources than contaminated water. Now Mayor Arakawa and the county water department have been saying that Hamakuopoko Well water is necessary because Upcountry is facing seri-

ous drought conditions. In fact, on Sept. 28 he’s holding a press conference with a few water experts to show that the water’s perfectly safe to drink. I just came from the Board of Water Supply. There are drought emergency guidelines that the board adopted for determining whether it’s necessary to call a drought. There are six different triggers, four of which must be met. Four of those consider water levels at various points in the system. Based on the department’s own figures currently on their website, levels at all these points far exceed the trigger. Besides that, if there really was a serious drought, the governor has the power to declare a disaster and suspend all laws, including any ordinance we pass prohibiting any use for human consumption. This was invoked twice by Governor Ben Cayetano in 1998, 1999. Records show Hamakuopoko Well water has been rarely used in the last six years. It’s very disingenuous of the administration to use these scare tactics to get Upcountry farmers up in arms. Let me switch topics for a moment—what do you like least about your job? There just physically isn’t enough time to address all the problems. Many should be addressed by the administration, but aren’t. So we take them up because residents are frustrated. The community brought the Hamakuopoko Wells issue to us—they couldn’t even get the courtesy of an open discussion. There are a lot of things the council could do proactively, but a lot of our time is covered dealing with problems the administration is ignoring. We only meet six hours a month—that’s a pitiful amount of time to do the people’s business. A few months ago, Kuau resident Robert Karpovich wrote you and the council’s Budget Committee about some serious discrepancies with the way the county assess property values [“Tax Breaks,” Aug. 24, 2006]. Is the council going to address that in any way? I hope in the next term the Budget & Finance Committee will bring forward all the inequities in the property tax system. We need to close the loopholes, make sure fair assessments are done and make sure the unfair assessments currently being done are corrected. Is that your biggest priority in the next term? We need to have viable water use and development ready for adoption by the council. Without that, there is no plan. We have to look at it in its totality. State law, the county charter and the county code all require that any use has to be adopted into a water use and development plan. That hasn’t been done for over 15 years. We need to take the issue of water development out from behind closed doors and put it in the public arena where it belongs. Water is the most important resource we have and the public deserves a hand in the decisionmaking process. Where do you want to see water development take place? There are opportunities Upcountry above the ag line to develop clean wells. Development of wells in East Maui is still controversial because we don’t know how it will affect stream flow. Restoring stream flow is a priority for the council. The Water Resource Committee was also recently presented with an exciting possibility: Dr. Richard
Thomas, a professor at the University of Hawai`i, did a study on the Big Island on volcanic substrate. He drilled a deep well there, beyond the basal lens, through areas of high chlorides which indicate the presence of salt water and discovered deep artesian water in a dynamic system. It delivers a billion gallons of pure water a day that’s self-delivered without a pump system. This is a groundbreaking scientific discovery in the Hawaiian Islands. He never expected to find water that deep. The council allocated $250,000 in this year’s budget to initiate exploration to see if this kind of water exists on Maui. When will that study take place? That’s the problem. The administration hasn’t picked up the ball and run with it. The money’s been sitting there since July 1. When we spend all our time fighting, very little can be accomplished. This is the purpose of the water use and development plan. It plans for providing water to various regions. If we had that document we’d have a plan. And we could fund the studies to make sure our water needs would be met. Seibu just announced that they’re selling Makena Resort. What’s the latest that’s happening there? The council Land Use Committee recommended approval of the zoning with 40 conditions. The developer [Makena Resort] then had to submit a unilateral agreement. But Makena Resort has refused to do this. Their approval has never been finalized or adopted by the council itself. Currently there are zoning entitlements on the land that would allow Makena Resort to go ahead with some development regardless of whether the county rezones it. But the real question on that is where is the water going to come from? It seems we get back to water on just about every subject. Exactly. So where do we get the water? For South Maui, realistically we have to go towards Kahakaloa and drill more wells. There’s also the possibility of using more surface water, but that would require an adequate filtration plant and more storage. We need more [water] storage in all the systems. If we had more storage, we could serve more people with the water we already have. Okay, let’s finish with something that surprised me. Two years ago you first ran for office in a field crowded with challenges—one of whom, longtime radio personality Ron Vaught, had considerable developer backing. But this time you were unopposed for reelection. What gives? My opponent [in 2004] had every endorsement you could possibly get except for the environmental community. He spent twice the money I spent. He had way more name recognition than I did. Now it certainly didn’t hurt that the tremendously popular Councilman Wayne Nishiki endorsed me. I had eight years experience in Maui County government. But I presented thoughtful and informed responses to questions posed during all the candidate forums. See, I love public service. I think we need to have people in office who see the job as one of public service first and foremost. MTW

Front Street’s delightful communal affair

At the north end of Front Street in Lahaina is Mala, a cozy tapas-style restaurant that offers its loyal crowd wonderful flavors and a stunning view to match. Named after the wharf it overlooks, Mala shies away from Lahaina Town’s tourist traffic and has grown to be a solid local favorite. Chef Mark Ellman of Maui Tacos and Penne Pasta fame is widely considered a pioneer of Hawaiian cuisine. For this lively ocean tavern, Ellman created a menu that showcases good, health-conscious food at modest prices. Having dined at the restaurant on a couple occasions, I’ve always been pleased by the quick and attentive staff and prime open-air seating. Browsing the menu the first time, I was half smitten, half skeptical, but just until we were brought the complimentary tortilla chips with edamame guacamole. The cool, creamy and surprisingly avocado-

less concoction was an automatic pleaser and paired perfectly well with extra spicy salsa. The grilled pita bread swiftly diminished my other doubts. Soft and buttery, it melted with a balanced medley of hummus, raita yogurt, babaganoush and fried chick peas with feta cheese.

The menu offered more tasty vegetarian fare. Sugar snap peas prepared in different variations of heat had a fresh crunch and the tomato shitake mushroom on crispy flat bread done with melted mozzarella and basil was plain delicious. While the Caesar salad was in dire need of a flavor tune-up, my taste buds kicked into overdrive for the sweet and tender chicken wings. Prepared with pomegranate, ginger and chili, it ranks at the top of the mustorder list; the succulent Manila clams in aromatic ginger black bean sauce run a close second. The Rolls Royce Kobe beef cheeseburger with caramelized onions and choice of cheddar or Maytag Blue cheese sounds like a definite test drive. Equally tempting were the adult macaroni and cheese
with rigatoni, mushroom cream and mozzarella, and the baby back ribs served over spicy edamame with mashed potatoes. But the last time I checked, gluttony is still frowned upon by society, so I’ll have to save that ride for the next time. The restaurant highlights a well-rounded wine list that includes California’s Conundrum—a full-bodied tropical explosion of pineapple, peaches, kiwi with a hint of vanilla and and Naia Verdejo, a sweet Spanish chardonnay with citrus overtones. Both are cool choices for Maui’s sweltering summer. To close the feast, it was a tough choice between the chocolate soufflé and house gelatos. But in the end, we opted for the chef’s signature dessert, Carmen Miranda. White chocolate toffee macadamia nut ice cream with a sweet soiree of glazed strawberries, baby coconuts, blackberries, pineapple and kiwi, it’s a delightful farewell to this communal affair. MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Convicted Thespianism Friday-Sunday (Sept. 29-Oct. 1), 6 p.m. at Iao Theater [STAGE] Inspired by the book Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen, the play A Queen’s Story brings together life lessons and experiences of the actors as well as the historical events leading to the dismantling of the Hawaiian monarchy. The catch is, these actors are the inmates at Maui Community Correctional Center and this is part of their reintegration program. Support rehabilitation instead of punishment by checking out their latest accomplishment—the play! I’ve always considered art and expression a good form of introspection. Visit Meoinc.charityfinders.org or call 249-2990. [HEIDI KING]
THURSDAY
Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit Saturday (Sept. 30), 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at War Memorial Gymnasium [FOOD] Yessir, the Maui Fire Department will be hosting their second annual “Who’s got the heat” chili cook-off fundraiser at this year’s Maui County Fair. Chili, my friends, is a topic I do not take lightly. It is my belief that chili fanaticism—much like religion—is instilled in us by our parents at a very early and impressionable age. My own undergraduate experience with chili occurred in early childhood with the introduction of my mother’s recipe to the family table. Being completely objective, it is simply the greatest chili ever created by humankind. Seriously. I’m not arguing, It’s a fact. Anyway, I’ve spent my entire life seeking a chili to rival Mom’s. Nothing’s come close. I’m starting to grow hair on my feet. But a chili cookoff? There may be some competition here, others like Mom. Then my eyes light up. Not only can the public taste the competitors’ chili, (for a $1 per bowl donation to benefit the Shriners Children’s Hospital’s transportation burn unit) it can also JOIN THE COMPETITION! So, finally, my mother will get her due. Justice will be served, and the universe will swell with emotional gratitude for what it never knew it was missing. For details, call 270-7561. MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Heartbreaker, Dreammaker Tuesday (Oct. 3), 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [ROCK ‘N ROLL] Pat Benatar is a real tough cookie with a long history. And why not? After all, she belongs to the light, she belongs to the thunder— she belongs to the sound of the words, we’ve all fallen under. For over 25 years, Benatar’s music has been like a tidal wave, spinnin’ over my head. But at this Maui Arts & Cultural Center show, she’ll be movin’ in for the kill tonight, she’s got every advantage when they put out the lights. So what, gotta work early tomorrow? Can’t afford a ticket? I’m warning you, just when you think you got it down, resistance nowhere to be found. Baby, take her hand, it’ll be all right. Surrender all your dreams to her tonight—they’ll come true in the end. So go to the show and open your eyes, maybe you’ll see the light. Tickets: $35, $45, $55, $65. Call 242-7469.
DAY
More Candidates Stuff! Thursday (Oct. 5), 6 p.m. at the Kula Community Center [CANDIDATES FORUM] The Primary Election may be over, but the politics are just getting started. We’ve got a General Election on Nov. 7—barely a month away!—and that means there’s lots of campaigning left to do. And I don’t mean that ridiculous sign-waving thing candidates do at major intersections—I’m talking a real issue-debating gabfest where those who want to hold the public trust tell voters where they think Maui’s going to get its water in 10 years, how we can bring affordable housing to those who need it, where we should build new schools and hospitals and how the hell we’re going to deal with all the traffic the island’s massive land development is causing. On Oct. 7, the Kula Community Association is sponsoring a big forum for all the candidates. There are a lot of them out there so the event should last a while, but there will be free refreshments. For more information call 878-1874 or 878-1342. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
Nat’l Day of Resistance Thursday (Oct. 5), 10 a.m. at Maui Community College [PEACE MARCH] The national organization World Can’t Wait—which has already protested the war in Iraq at the United Nations—has declared Oct. 5 to be a National Day of Resistance. That means you get to take to the streets and tell the island that you’re sick and tired of our useless, bloody war in Iraq that gets worse every day we stay. The march on Maui, which is sponsored jointly by World Can’t Wait’s local chapter and Maui Peace Action, will march (peaceably, I’m told) from MCC, along Ka`ahumanu Ave., to the state office building in Wailuku, where a rally will take place at Honoli`i Park. The march should include marching bands, community leaders, tons of signs and, hopefully, a whole lot of people. The march begins at 10 a.m., but you should be at the school by 9:45 a.m. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
School’s Out Too much Napoleon, not enough Silverman Fashioned loosely after Stephen Potter’s series of humorous books featuring inventive ways of exacting revenge from culpable offenders, School For Scoundrels invokes similarly themed comedies like Rushmore and Hitch without rising above either of those middling movies. Jon Heder stays in his Napoleon Dynamite goofball stereotype as Roger, an abused New York City meter maid vulnerable to fainting spells in the presence of his longed-for-neighbor Amanda (Jacinda Barrett).
School For Scoundrels
★★★★★ Rated PG-13/97 mins.
A tip-off from a coworker puts Roger in touch with a private self-esteem course for losers taught by the truly misanthropic Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton). Almost as soon as Roger parts with the $5000 for Dr. P’s “Be a lion in life” course, he jumps to the top of the class, ready to give the teacher a run for his money. A fierce rivalry ignites as Dr. P sets his own romantic sights on Amanda, and Roger is left to fend for himself in a gloves-off battle of oneupsmanship for the girl. Writer/director Todd Phillips (Old School) relies on slapstick to compensate for his script’s anemic narrative and ends up with a flat comedy occasionally punctuated with snaps of absolving vulgarity from Billy Bob Thornton’s colorful delivery. School For Scoundrels relies on Thornton’s hovering performance to drive the film, and the formula nearly succeeds in the face of Jon Heder’s narrow comic range and inability to develop his character over the course of the story. Thornton has made a cottage industry as the king of cynical attitude for dark comedies. Since slapping audiences around with his savory brand of crude love in Bad Santa, Thornton has sharpened the pitch of his acrid characters in The Ice Harvest and Bad News Bears. Here, Thornton comes across like a debauched jet set uncle on too much Viagra. He’s not only the lion of the jungle, but he’s also the snake and the gorilla too.
School was a lot like this for me, too
It’s this vitality that Roger feeds on and that enlivens Dr. P’s “Lie, lie, and lie some more” motto when he uses every dirty trick in his arsenal to romantically ensnare Amanda under the excuse of educating Roger in how to rise to the challenge of the dog-eat-dog lesson. Sarah Silverman steals a couple of key scenes as Amanda’s all-business roommate who has no time for the shenanigans that accompany Roger and Dr. P. It’s a nagging disappointment that the filmmakers didn’t include some comic spark-throwing between Silverman

and Thornton whose characters seem primed for comedic conflict. Jacinda Barrett (Poseidon) is woefully miscast as Roger’s romantically ambivalent cute-girlnext-door, if only for her lack of chemical zip with Thornton and Heder. School for Scoundrels provokes belly laughs during an obligatory paintball battle and a repetitive tennis court gag between Roger and Dr. P as witnessed by Amanda, but the picture remains an average comedy even by Hollywood standards. The laughs just evaporate. MTW

Get Down and Durty DJ Durty shares the nitty gritty on Maui nightlife Haiku resident Kyle Sanchez, 23, also known as DJ Durty, offers island partiers something stronger than the watered down piña colada mixes served in this magical paradise. After all, we deserve more than pretentious dress codes, overpriced admission, long waits, screaming security and bad trance, don’t we? Seriously, none of us should have to wait for DJ Chicago or Detroit or San Francisco or buckshot Egypt to entertain our booty-shaking tendencies. So if your ears are craving a little more heady electronica, a little more DJ Shadow or a lot less 50 Cent, you might add another local DJ to put your hardearned drinking money on—especially one prone to include off-the-beaten-path artists like Skream, Luke Envoy and The Body Snatcher in his rotation. “I am known to spin an amalgamation of a lot of

sounds,” says Sanchez. “My dad was an old-school funk and 1960’s psychedelic records collector. I started getting into music that way. I developed my tastes and taught myself how to mix. I didn’t grow up in a DJ culture-prone area. It was the Big Island and there wasn’t much of anything besides top 40 CD DJs really.” Finding a used Danny Tenaglia mixed tape got Sanchez hooked on electronic music, and from there he dug the crates from all directions. With a fair share of weddings and house parties as practice ground, he has been spinning for five years and has even graced decks in the mainland and Tokyo. “I just bring a wide-spectrum of tunes and let the night dictate the vibe,” says Sanchez. “Club owners are usually inhibited to do something slightly different but there are heads out there who pay attention to the music and support.”

This self-taught wax slinger’s calendar starts off on Wednesday nights at Charley’s in Paia where he drops a bass-heavy, dub, step and break beats set. Admission is free. Thursday nights take him to Kihei’s Tiki Lounge where he enjoys a set-up in the tropical tavern’s breezy lanai. After adding some ragga to his bag of tricks, he pushes westward to a new Friday weekly at Mango Grill and Bar Restaurant in Ka`anapali. Admission is $3 and parking is easy. “I put a lot of good intention into that party,” said Sanchez. “It’s fun to see a space go from being empty to really banging.” You can also spot Sanchez playing tunes at Livewire Café’s monthly events on Front Street in Lahaina. Beautiful honeymooners and kama`ainas can take a break from the pristine waters and daily toils and appreciate some contemporary art accompanied by tasty dance floor treats. Ain’t too shabby. “When you party in Maui, you got the party people, the old-school aunties and uncles, the freaks, the tourists, young inhibited Japanese girls, and that’s the beauty of it,” says Sanchez. “There are heads who support the music and who are lending their talents. Whether they are promoters, dancers, movers and shakers who want to hear something different, it is all welcomed energy to build the night.” Catch DJ Durty at Casanova’s Club Crimson along with Ray Masters and Miss Bootzie this Saturday, Sept. 30. Club Crimson dishes up uplifting, sexy house music and happens on the first Saturdays of every month following Nov. 4. MTW

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Like you, I cherish beauty, Libra. But I don’t get hung up on prettiness like some of you do. Evolved Libras have learned not to seek beauty but simply to see it, in everything. They know that ugly can be beautiful too, and that grace and loveliness can be found in surprising places. Those are the kinds of places you’ll have to learn to look in this week, Libra, if you haven’t already, because the surface of your surroundings won’t be obviously charming. The splendor you’re privy to at the moment is buried so far it’s invisible unless you’re patient and determined enough to find it. Are you?

You don’t often make snap judgments about people you’ve just met but you do, occasionally, screw up. This may come as news to some of you, because it’s rare that you ever look back in such a case to realize your mistake. Instead you stumble onwards, oblivious to the coolness, beauty, inspiration or brilliant sex you’re missing out on because of your error. Check yourself. In fact, that’s just what this week is good for: reconsidering previously-held opinions, especially about others, and delivering at least a couple second chances.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
WEBSITE
Essentially, you’ve taken your message to the fanciest place you could get to. Your art—whatever form it takes—is sitting on blank white walls in an art gallery being half-contemplated by rich art snobs over idle conversation and plastic cups of wine. That’s all fine but what you need to do is take your message to the streets. Go buy some spray paint and cover the walls with graffiti—or whatever equivalent action works for you. This week, proclaim your ideas loudly (but intelligently, please) to those who need them, not just those who can afford them.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
MAILING
Put a carnival mask on a Capricorn and they usually go delightfully insane. So few and far between are the opportunities for you to bust out of your attractive and well-fitting shell that whenever you get the chance to do so, you grab it and run with it, further and faster than even the craziest party animal you know. This is actually not only good for you; it’s essential. Without these occasional chances to go wild, all the time you spend being productive and efficient will quite simply stifle your soul. Usually you wait for these rare chances to just come along; this week, however, seek one out.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) With our addictions to cellphones, ipods and laptops, we’re already halfway towards becoming fullfledged technology-dependent cyborgs. I have no objection; I’m on a laptop right now, with a cellphone and ipod in my pockets. It’s important to remember, though, that the point of all these things is to bring us all closer to each other, to help us share art, music and ideas with our fellow humans. Are yours serving that purpose, or actually isolating you? Your cyborg extensions ought to make you more human, not less.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) If you were somehow translated into medieval times, you’d soon be branded a witch and probably burnt at the stake. It’s all a matter of perspective. Your basic knowledge and abilities would be terrifying indicators of black magic. Similarly, ideas that frighten you now are things we may embrace in the future. You forward-thinkers are already aware of this on some level. This week’s task is getting the rest of us to open our minds to it.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Radio has never sounded so good for

Neither of us really knows the point of life or death, but when I’m assailed by doubts I find comfort in a curious mix of logic and faith. For instance, if we have souls that somehow cycle through life after life, the only way it could function, logistically, is if we had no memory of the lives that came before. I combine this logical conclusion with a leap of faith—that the universe is an ultimately benevolent place that makes sense—and feel, truly, comforted. Most Aries, being both powerfully intellectual and emotional, feel uncomfortable in the province of pure religion or science. Somehow combining the two, however, might yield the “solution” to the problem you’ve been grappling with.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Your average American landfill would be considered a treasure trove of useful and usable items to poor folk from your average Third World country. I think this is one of the areas where we fall most short of the example we ought to be setting: transforming our relative wealth into a smaller footprint on the earth, not a greater one. We can afford to, after all. You, too, can afford to make an extra effort to have less impact on others. It’s a luxury and a responsibility at the same time, to compensate for those who have neither. Please embrace and accept it.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I heard about a social experiment regarding kindness and a willingness to help strangers. A woman would pass by a phone booth as the person using it emerged, hitting a trick switch on her briefcase which caused it to fall open, spilling its contents onto the sidewalk. The point was to determine how many people would stop to help her. The phone itself was rigged to return the money to the person using it about half the time. The vast majority of those who got their change back stopped to help. Most of those who got nothing didn’t stop. I mention this fascinating insight into human nature to remind you of the ripple effect even the smallest kindness can have, and vice versa. This is important information, considering this week’s events.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Nearly every Cancer has what I call a “Cinderella” phase of her life, where she, for whatever reason, subverts most or all of her own desires in order to please another. Growing out of this unhealthy chapter is an important milestone in each Cancer’s life. However, so is relearning it, to some extent. Don’t get me wrong. You should never sacrifice so much for someone else like that. But learning to unselfishly put aside some of your own desires in order to give something to someone else can, ironically, be extremely rewarding, especially this week.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) There are scientists studying everything, from a cure for cancer, to the lifecycles of dinosaurs, to how to prevent flatulence, etc. But these specialized interests didn’t occur overnight. All these men and women began by studying the foundations of science and what we already know, and gradually refined their areas of interest until they concerned just one or two things. You, too, have become just that specialized, only, just like the poor fellow studying the meaning of dog barks (he concluded they don’t necessarily mean anything), you’ve driven into a dead end. It’s now time to back up and branch out again, just a little, until your new path appears.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You need people. This is no criticism; Leos need people to admire them, Geminis need people to listen to them, and Aries need people to entertain them. You need people to need you. This makes you seem very evolved and selfless to some, and in some ways you are. But the true sign of an evolved Virgo is one who knows how to serve others and herself, at the same time, somehow being just as available as she always was to those who need her, while simultaneously doing what she can to prevent her own deprivation and suffering. How close are you to that example? This week is your chance to get quite a bit closer.

Taking a Bite, Part Two When I got to New York City, I tried not to plan too much. I only had two days there, and I was determined to go with the flow. But one thing I really wanted to do was visit the Museum of Sex—MoSex, for short. Their current exhibits included “Peeping, Probing & Porn: Four Centuries of Graphic Sex in Japan” and “Stags, Smokers & Blue Movies: The Origins of American Pornographic Film.” Yeah, that’s my kind of culture. But my first night in Manhattan, Ashley took me to a hip Latin joint called Rosa Mexicano. After a few frozen pomegranate margaritas, I headed upstairs where I encountered a two-story piece of art by David Rockwell, in which rows and rows of little human figurines jutted out as if diving from tiers of miniature waterfalls on a wall of blue glass tile. To say the least, that’s not what a person generally sees after a several shots of tequila. On 9/11, while much of the city was in tribute mode at Ground Zero, I checked out The Village and developed an eye infection. Naturally, the best thing I could do with a seeping eyeball was to find a dive bar, fast. So I groped my way to a place called Doc Holliday’s, where some guy asked what I thought of a sign they’d made offering a “two for one” deal, only with a sketch of the Twin Towers as the Roman numeral “two.” I peeked inside and saw a lineup of bikers and the requisite slouching old drunk in the corner. Cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon lined the bar top, and a Big Buck Hunter Pro video game sat blinking on the opposite wall. I told the guy it didn’t look like anyone was offended, and decided to go in. I soon made friends with a large, septum-pierced, bald man in a leather jacket who had just finished a three-month stint on a merchant ship. He asked if I liked Cuban cigars, said he had just smuggled over a bottle of absinthe and then bought the entire bar a couple rounds. The bartender was a charming, attractive young girl gearing up to emcee an open mic night later. Soon a bespectacled man in his early 40’s with a slight Hispanic accent came in holding a book by Dennis Prager, called Happiness is a Serious Problem. “I’m fucking wasted,” said the man. “Sorry.” Who knew New Yorkers were so nice? Spectacles then proceeded to tell the bartendress, with whom he declared he was in love, that he just hasn’t been able to make himself happy lately. He cited various romantic problems. “Well, if you can look yourself in the mirror everyday and not spit,” counseled the leather sea man, “you’re okay.” And then later, just to mix it up a little, I fell in lust with Kiki. Kiki De Montparnasse is a shop for a “luxury and lifestyle brand that celebrates intimacy and inspires the romantic imagination”—basically, an upscale sex boutique. A tall, dark and handsome man in a three-piece greeted me at the door, and soon after I was offered assistance by a beautiful salesgirl in lingerie and heels. My imagination was inspired alright, with stuff like hand-sculpted obsidian glass dilettos ($1,750), tension set cock-rings with 5mm cubic zirconia ($795), a sparkling rose quartz anal plug ($795) and a handy little Sony DVD Camcorder with lightweight tripod ($715). And the dressing rooms—velvet draped boudoirs, really—came equipped with three settings for lighting: Before, During and After. Precious! The next day featured more of the same, and flew by in a flurry of shops, bars and interesting people. But then I realized I only had a half-hour to get back to Ashley’s before running off to Philadelphia to see Jen, who had just moved there. In a panic, I crammed into the subway at rush hour, and somehow landed in the middle of a filming of Dancing With the Stars at the Lincoln Center. Taking a detour in the opposite direction, I stopped to watch another filming of some sort of cop show. By the time I got to Penn Station, it was a zoo of untamed business-attired beasts. In Pennsylvania, Jen’s mom schooled me immediately on pronunciation—“It’s Lanc-asTER, not LAN-cas-ter”—and Jen’s dad drove us by various Amish settlements. While I was busy formulating my theory that the “tobacco” the Amish were “drying” in their huge warehouses was something a little more illicit, Jen expressed anxiety over her decision to move back to the East Coast. Her brother and I convinced her it was all about establishing connections again—making friends and all that. Jen was doubtful. Later, we sat at the bar of a newly opened, fancy restaurant called Christopher’s. As her brother and I looked on, a cooing Jen was being hand-fed what looked to be a rather succulent seafood risotto by an obliging stranger seated next to her. Yeah, we’re really worried she’s not gonna be able to make any new friends. Anyway, I never did make it to the MoSex. And I opted to buy a fabulous pair of shoes instead of that amazing “upscale” vibrator at Kiki. But still, I had a fabulous time. And I believe I’ve discovered three syllables more harmonious than the word “vacation.” Return trip.
