‘Enhanced Protection’ Spinner dolphin speaks out on new rules Last week Peter Young, chairman of the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, announced that his office supports the federal government giving “enhanced protection” to spinner dolphins in Hawaiian waters. “We are confident there are management solutions that will allow for enjoyable, educational, economically viable and culturally appropriate dolphin watching activities in Hawai`i,” Young said in an Oct. 13 press release. To learn more about how new protection rules will affect our plucky spinner dolphins, I recently spoke by phone to Lord Smiley, master of Pod 8739-J-18, which lives just off the coast of Lanai: MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Hello? Lord Smiley? Are you there?
under any circumstances. Right here in the release he says, and I quote, “Scientific evidence and basic common sense tell us that dolphins are often disturbed when swimmers place themselves in close proximity to resting dolphins, and therefore we support any reasonable effort to prevent such disturbance.” Oh, that’s not the problem. Young’s absolutely right that it’s wrong for people to swim near us. It causes social disruption, caloric energy loss and habituation to humans. Also, I don’t know that you realize this since you’re a human, but you guys always stink of suntan lotion. Spinner dolphins hate that. Anyway, my problem with Young’s call for “enhanced protection” is that it doesn’t go nearly far enough. How so?
LORD SMILEY: Yup, I’m here. Thanks a lot of talking to us about this. No problem. So I assume you’ve looked over Young’s statement. What do you make of it? Unmitigated bullshit, pure and simple. What? Young seems to be on your side, saying things like it’s not good for people to swim with dolphins
Young, the DLNR and, I suspect, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration—which has jurisdiction over all us non-endangered marine animals—are all interested in keeping humans out of the water around dolphins. But we want you guys off the land, too. Excuse me? Off the land? But you guys only live in the water—what difference does it make whether we’re on landWe only live in the water now. Who’s to say where evolution will take us in a million years. No, you guys need to clear out now, so your cities and towns have time to crum-
ble back into the Earth. Last thing we want to do is grow feet and walk on shore, only to find a bunch of buildings and highways full of people who smell like suntan lotion.

BRANDED! A&B drops a couple notches on the news that it hired Venture magazine publisher Kevin Halloran as a director for corporate finance and investor relations. According to an Oct. 12 Pacific Business News story, the owner of Matson Navigation, A&B Properties, Kauai Coffee and Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar likes Halloran’s “unique blend of investment banking and corporate development experience,” which is doubletalk for the fact that Halloran knows all about “branding”—a huge deal with corporations worried that they’re becoming passé or unpopular. “Your brand is your promise to customers,” Halloran told PBN back in 2002, when he was also running the Honolulu consultant firm Media Venture Partners. Guess A&B figures that today’s youth just aren’t hip to the company’s sprawling land holdings, ocean-going freighters and odorous sugar refineries. Then again, Halloran does have good timing: he left Media Venture Partners in 2004, which is also the same year state records show the company stopped filing annual reports to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, which now considers the firm “not in good standing.” DISCONNECTED? Carlyle Group-owned Hawaiian Telcom is very lucky this week—it’s already at the bottom of the list, and can’t drop any lower, even though on Oct. 10 Pacific Business News reported that the company is fielding so many customer complaints that they’ve had to use a professional call center located on the Mainland. You’d think that Carlyle Group—one of the world’s largest private equity firms, managing more than $14 billion worth of investments, properties and other companies—would be able to run a little phone company in the little state of Hawai`i without having to call for help when so many of their customers start calling them for help, but I guess you’d be wrong. Jo Anne Johnson Problems. Big problems. How about George W. Bush?
MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Why should people vote for you?
How long do we have ‘till he’s out of office?
JO ANNE JOHNSON: I really believe I’ve done the best possible job I could have for the people. I raised issues for council members, even though they’ve been buried in committee. With other, new individuals on the council, we’ll have the opportunity to hear those measures and we may have a chance to complete what we began.
Land Development? To build or not to build, that is the question! We need better planning. Pakalolo? I’ve always believed that hemp has been a crop we could use for sustainable purposes. People that could benefit from medicinal marijuana should be given that alternative.
What’s the biggest problem facing your district? The County Council hasn’t seemed to have a goal and objective that’s based on reason. The biggest problem is lack of political will. Can you be more specific?
tion. Many projects that could provide housing are having to go to find water for resorts. It’s important to set priorities to serve the local population. Otherwise, resentment will continue to grow.
All of the problems are systematic of a deteriorating quality of life.
What are your feelings on Hawaiian Sovereignty?
What will be your role in fixing these problems?
I feel really sad for the people of the host culture. Their issues are being marginilized by the day-to-day issues we’re facing. We need to address issues regarding land titles and water rights or there’ll be continued conflict. Too many have already been forced to leave the island.

It was near the end of the Oct. 11 Maui County Liquor Commission hearing when Ramoda Anand, 21, addressed the panel. Dressed in a bright red shirt, Anand slowly made his way to the front table. He has severe Cerebral Palsy and is confined to a powered wheelchair, so his friend Anthony Simmons, sporting a wild blue aloha shirt and even wilder afro, gently pushed his chair forward and then took a seat by his side, where he began translating Anand’s statements. According to Simmons, Anand said that he enjoys dancing in Maui nightclubs but found the LC’s rules—no dancing by tables, in aisles or anywhere outside specially marked zones—to be utterly incomprehensible. “He doesn’t want to break the nice rules you have,” Simmons told the commissioners. “He wants you to come up with a good definition of dancing but don’t invade our personal space.” A few minutes later, Simmons spoke for himself, saying that he also wondered what the LC did and didn’t consider dancing and worried that his actions could get a club in trouble. “Dancing is freedom,” he said. “Dancing is a form of communication. It should be on the dance floor if it’s extreme, but if you’re just in your own space, I don’t see how you can make a rule on this.” LC Director Franklyn Silva very politely responded that his office’s definition of dancing came from Webster’s Dictionary—movement to the beat of music—and that, like pornography or calculus, “you know it when you see it.” He added that his department usually only hauls establishments before the Adjudication Board for dancing violations if they happen “over and over,” but even then the club or restaurant has an opportunity to defend itself. The commissioners, not really knowing what to do with Anand’s request for clarification, looked a bit lost. Silva then said that he would put his answer in writing for Anand, and that seemed to satisfy the commissioners, who happily went on with other business like getting details on an upcoming state liquor conference.

Living with the frustration that I continue to be a minority on the council and cannot move forward with a public agenda. Too many bills are sitting in the planning committee without even a hearing. Traffic impact fees, agricultural subdivision ordinances, and two moratorium bills have been sitting in Charmaine Tavares’ planning committee. One would have saved us from the North Beach development. It’s ironic that some of the individuals trying to find solutions have had items sitting in their committee, buried.
The Bible. Sometimes prayer is all I have to turn to in times of frustration!
Paper made from Hemp lasts longer than paper made from trees, up to 100 years without turning brown.

“If we had information about what the true costs are—the true expenses—were for the refiners, what they were charging wholesale and what our families end up paying at the pump, we could make a decision in the state: Does it make sense for us to offer tax credits for someone to build a terminal in Kahului on Maui or in West Hawai`i on the Big Island, because that would inject more competition into those markets.”
And in her energy plan, as outlined in a Jan. 13, 2006 Honolulu Advertiser story: “[I would] Require oil companies to submit price, product and profit data to help determine whether gas prices are fair. Use the information for an index that would give consumers more information about pricing.”

What she didn’t say: That apparently she had no intention of asking the oil companies to actually do the things she said they wanted them to do. An Oct. 11, 2006 Advertiser story says the state has done absolutely nothing in the last five months to enforce the law requiring Big Oil to make public financial details about gas prices. In that time, Lingle’s done little except continue to tell the public that she wants more transparency, even though the fact that Big Oil has long given her thousands of dollars in campaign contributions would seem to indicate Lingle has considerable access to the industry. True to form, Lingle’s office insists that the fault lay with the state Legislature, which hasn’t authorized any money to enforce the law, even though as the Advertiser points out, the state Public Utilities Commission has all along had $700,000 to do exactly that.

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the Westside girl who decided the rest of her neighborhood should take care of her dog instead of just assuming the responsibility herself. If the responsibility of a dog is so much trouble that you can’t handle it, then why don’t you sell the dog or give it away? It’s bad enough that you decided to run a youth hostel in your front yard, which is a sea of tents bursting with unmotivated pot heads, or that you party and make noise until four in the morning. But really, I’m just tired of feeding your dog and watching it ravage the neighborhood every day. See, after the novelty of owning a puppy wears off, there are obligations to the dog that every owner, including you, have to take care of. That’s why I think it would be best for both of you if you separated. It’s only fair. That way your dog will get a good home where someone will actually walk it and feed it, instead of leaving it for all the home owners to do the job. So when can you leave?

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, Oct. 11 Hey, Don Ho’s back! Fresh from the “heart-related concerns” and “heart-related issues”—as today’s Honolulu Advertiser so delicately put it—that caused him to fly to Thailand last November for an emergency stem cell procedure that isn’t really kosher in this country—Ho will once again sing “Tiny Bubbles” to the tourists at the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber, just like the old days of 1962 when he started out at Duke’s. You kids have no idea how big a deal this is—for countless rubes and shut-ins around the world, 76-year-old Don Ho is Hawai`i. So much so, in fact, that he’s played himself on countless TV shows, including Life Goes On, Fantasy Island, Charlie’s Angels, Sanford & Son, I Dream of Jeannie, Batman, The Andy Williams Show, The Fall Guy and, of course, The Brady Bunch. Ahh, the Hawai`i episode of The Brady Bunch—did television get any better than that? They had Vincent Price playing some nut who lived in a cave in that episode. Just like real life.
THURSDAY, Oct. 12 Ahh, Hawai`i politics. It’s a beautiful thing, really. Fun, too—take yesterday’s announcement by Democratic U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye that he’s endorsing Republican Charmaine Tavares for Maui Mayor. “I think she’s first class,” Inouye said of the top mayoral vote getter in the September Primary Election at a Maui Democratic Century Club luncheon yesterday, according to today’s Maui News. Now some people might be mystified as to why one of the most senior Democrats in the entire nation would help a Republican get elected as Mayor of Maui, but it actually makes perfect sense. See, Tavares is running against incumbent Alan Arakawa, who is also a Republican. Now Inouye is sharp, you see, but he’s also a Democrat. And he wants Democrats to win elections—and the Democrat he clearly wants to be the next Mayor is Alan Arakawa, who is a Republican. Confused? Don’t be: Inouye is clearly a student of former President Harry Truman, a Democrat’s Democrat, except where nuclear weapons, war and breaking up strikes were concerned, but the Democratic Party back then was a little different than it is now. Anyway, it was Truman who said—I believe it was in 1952—that “If

They—that would be Pacific Rim Land Co.—will pay tribute to the Hawaiian farmers of old by putting up giant estates ranging from three to nearly 14 acres, but all priced between $1.18 million Tavares: Inouye’s choice and $1.4 million! “That’s what you need, dude! You need a girl with tiny hands and, if you’re into it, tiny feet.”
Way to puss out, Honolulu StarBulletin. Yesterday the paper refused to endorse either Democrat Mazie Hirono or Republican Bob Hogue (who writes a column for Star-Bulletin-owned Midweek) in the U.S. Congress Second District race, saying that “neither has shown a deep understanding of the neighbor islands’ problems and of voters who rightly feel their interests fall second to those of urban Oahu voters.” But then they totally negated that opinion with their next sentence, insisting that “continued partisanship won’t fix what’s wrong with a do-nothing Congress.” Actually, what we need is more partisanship—more liberal Democratic partisanship to counterbalance the caveman Republican administration that equates debate with treachery and has been grabbing power wherever it can. For anyone who wants to see this madness end, the choice in the Second District race is clear.

In the midst of violence and despair in Baghdad, at least two institutions are working smoothly, according to September stories in, respectively, The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Iraq Star, an American Idol-type reality show, attracted 10,000 contestants for 45 slots in filming at the downtown Baghdad Hotel, and will be shown locally and around the Arab world. Other reality shows are in the works. Second, the nearly 3,500 Baghdad traffic officers still command high respect despite the city’s other problems. Said an engineer, “The traffic law is the only thing nowadays that functions correctly.” In fact, the Web site of the Shi’ite Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani contains a query whether it is permissible, even when a driver has the street all to himself, to violate traffic laws. The ayatollah’s answer is no.
THIS WEEK IN EEL BOWLING The 30-year-old traditional festival of eel bowling in the fishing village of Lyme Regis, England, was canceled in July after complaints from an animal rights activist that it was disrespectful to eels. In the ritual, teams of anglers stand on platforms and swing a giant (but dead) conger eel, attached to the ceiling, to see who will be the last person standing. Said a spokesman for the charitable event, which raises money for lifeboat crews, “But it’s a dead conger, for Pete’s sake. I shouldn’t think the conger could care one way or another.”
SMART GUY Leon Howard Matter was arrested in Sandusky, Ohio, in August for
sending a letter containing “anthrax” (it turned out to be harmless powder) to the local FBI office. He told agents the reason he did it was because he was facing earlier child pornography charges and didn’t want to go to prison for that because he’d get beaten up. Threatening the FBI, he reasoned, has a better cachet.

At the Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in England in July, Andrew Curzon was charged with wrongfully attempting to cash a neighbor’s pension-adjustment check, in the equivalent of about $220,000. The explanation by Curzon (who is a law student) is that he has “dyspraxia,” which renders him unable “to engage in logical thinking.”

STUPID IRONY U.S. Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio agreed to plead guilty in September to corruption charges stemming from investigations of the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and even though Ney faces as much as 27 months in prison, he will still be eligible for a congressional pension (based on 12 years’ service) when he gets out. Earlier this year, Congress passed a corruption-reform bill, which Ney enthusiastically supported, which would have caused a congressman in Ney’s position to forfeit his pension, but the bill has been stalled in a HouseSenate conference and was not enacted before Ney’s plea was accepted.

or the last couple weeks vicious rumors have swirled through my email, saying Halloween in Lahaina was cancelled or was about to be cancelled. Later I began hearing from people that there were going to be serious cutbacks and new rules: no sexy costumes, no entertainment and/or no adults in the big parade. Naturally, I was skeptical. Halloween has been an institution in Lahaina for many years. It’s the largest Oct. 31 block party in the state, with 20,000 to 30,000 people in annual attendance. But on Oct. 12 the buzz really got going after The Maui News ran a front-page story reporting a “hitch” in Halloween but offering only vague details. Yet for all the concern and drama created by this news, it looks like there really is no big threat to Halloween this year. According to Sergeant Ricky Uedoi of Maui Police Department (MPD), this year’s rules of conduct are exactly the same as last year’s. “Same rules apply,” Sergeant Uedoi said. “Nothing perverted, no alcohol, no weapons, no replica swords. Dancing is fine. People do their little skits and such and then they move on down the street.” A press release recently sent out by the LahainaTown Action Committee (LAC)—the Westside merchant group responsible for working with the County to get event permits—reports that the Keiki Parade sponsored by the Soroptomists will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Papalaua Street, with Front Street closing at 3 p.m. Maui Tacos is also sponsoring the costume contest with a $1000 prize on the main stage under the Banyan Tree. So what was this “hitch” mentioned in The Maui News? According to Sergeant Uedoi, the Lahaina Town Action Committee’s new staff may have been a factor. “The permit process with the Cultural Resources

Commission is complex,” he said. “They might have needed to submit something earlier.” Karee Carlucci, who took over as LAC executive director in January, had a completely different reason. “Repeated play of video footage from years past on Akaku caught the eye of a reverend,” she said, though she didn’t name the reverend. “And some families believing the video footage to be what the Halloween event is all about. This caused some protest to the permits.” And according to Don Couch, Deputy Planning Director at the County’s Department of Planning, there was “concern from Native Hawaiians that the event is too risqué.” All these reasons may have affected LahainaTown Action Committee’s request for permits for the Halloween event. Permits need to be filed and approved with the Planning Department because the event takes place in Lahaina’s historic district. It’s the responsibility of the Maui County Cultural Resource Commission to review various events and developments to make sure they observe local cultural significance. “Departments in the County were questioning why this event was in a cultural place,” said Carlucci. “They were seeing it as a barhopping event. But the Maui Police Department came out as the event’s defenders.” Indeed, Sergeant Uedoi actually wrote a letter to the County supporting the event. “The thing is it [the event] is going to happen whether LAC gets the permits or not,” Uedoi said. “With MPD and LAC working together we make it safest for everybody. Our main thing is the safety. There is the assumption that there is always nudity, always drugs. Those people try to sneak it but they do get arrested.” Despite careful planning for safety by LahainaTown Action Committee and the Maui Police Department for the past 17 years, the County did ultimately insist on some changes to Halloween. “It was nothing specific, but we are asked to avoid a ‘Carnivale’ or a ‘Mardi Gras’ element or atmosphere,” Carlucci said. In previous years the LAC had billed the LahainaTown Halloween celebration as the “Mardi Gras of the Pacific,” but Carlucci said that wouldn’t happen this year. As a result, Carlucci cancelled appearances by the marimba band Mapenzi, the Brazilian band Banda Dende, a belly dance troupe and has excluded Samba Maui from the parade. All these artists and musicians were understandably disappointed, and the whole thing contained a bitter irony. In the concern over lewd behavior, the County has turned on these professional performers and artists who suddenly didn’t seem to fit the bill of approved historic district performers for Halloween. Couch also mentioned a concern over a commemorative T-shirt from a couple years back. LahainaTown Action Committee generates funds for the event by designing a collectable T-shirt that sells out every year. “We listened to the concern,” said Couch. “It
had a headless horseman with a Hawaiian physique, with a cape, holding a pineapple for its head. There are two main aspects of the cultural sensitivity of the area. There is Lahaina as the old Hawaiian capital, and there is the whaling history. We want to make sure everyone is sensitive.” This year’s official LAC T-shirt features the Bride of Frankenstein and classic movie lore. Ironically, many of the local church leaders I contacted for this story said they saw no need to get rid of Lahaina’s Halloween celebration. “I have a personal problem with some of the costumes being sexist,” Waiola Church’s Kahu Donald Schmidt said. “But the church uses the event as a fundraiser. We have a food booth and we sell parking. Churches that have a problem with Halloween are being petty. They have no idea what they are talking about.” Pastor Brad Hall of Calvary Chapel agreed. “Halloween accentuates a lifestyle that I do not condone, but I don’t stand in protest against the event,” he said. “Because of its Pagan origin we don’t participate, but for the sake of the kids we offer some alternatives.” The college town of Chico, California stands as a warning for Lahaina. Through the years they saw their Halloween celebration grow to include more than 20,000 people, but some residents didn’t like it. In 2002 they began an extensive media campaign against the event, buying print and television advertising that warned young people to stay out of downtown on Halloween night. The next year, downtown Chico and the college campus area were a literal ghost town on Halloween. While it would take new laws to shut down Lahaina on Halloween, an action like this could devastate the many Lahaina businesses that have grown to depend on the money that they get from the street festival. For some restaurants and centers this is one of their highest revenue generating nights. “It’s one of our biggest nights of the year,” Hard Rock Cafe sales and marketing manager Natalie Capitano said. “You can’t even compare it to our regular evenings. The event is fun and creative and we don’t have any problems at all.” As expected, the calls to the County Planning Department on Halloween have initiated a review of the whole event. Next March or April, the CRC will hold a hearing on it. It’s been 10 years since the Commission took a look at Lahaina’s Halloween. But even if the CRC review comes up with new rules for the event or asks for a toned-down celebration, it will be nearly impossible to stop it. “One thing we know, it would be difficult to shut it down,” Couch said. One key reason is that if the Planning Department does not approve the usual
Halloween permits, the usual 80 police officers that patrol the event—pulled from all parts of the island—would dwindle down to just the five that work the Lahaina beat. Five officers for 20 to 30 thousand revelers translates into complete anarchy, the police say, which they add would be far worse than the alleged lewdness and inappropriate behavior that spurred the initial complaints. Beer! It’s not just for breakfast anymore never put anything in my mouth that I know nothing about. This presented something of a problem where upcoming Oktoberfest was concerned, since I don’t know all that much about beer. And as anyone knows, you can’t have Oktoberfest without beer. To find out more, I went to Maui Brewing Co. in Kahana. There, I tried all the locally brewed selections. I found the Bikini Blonde Lager light and refreshing. The Honolua Lager was very similar, but had a little higher alcohol content. Primo Pilsner has a full-bodied taste with a little kick. The Maui Pale Ale had a similar bite to it but was more aromatic. Their Coconut Porter was a dark, chocolatey-coconut concoction. The Wild Hog Stout was dark like Guinness but not nearly as thick. The whole experience was awesome, but I realized I didn’t know enough about the basics of beer to appreciate all of the aspects of the brews. So the

next night I went to Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku for an actual beer tasting hosted by Marc himself. There I learned so much about beer that I actually remembered most of it the next morning. First, we had some Pabst Blue Ribbon as a palate cleanser. PBR was originally called “Select” but in 1882 people began referring to it as “Blue Ribbon” because there used to be an actual blue ribbon tied around the neck. Some say Pabst is the first brewery to put beer in a can. I was surprised to find that common beers like Pabst, Budweiser and Miller are all lagers. By the way, there are only three types of beer: ale, lager and specialty. Ales are distinguished by the use of top fermenting yeasts and fermenting at warmer temperatures. Lagers use bottom fermenting yeasts and fermenting at cooler temperatures. And specialty beers have additional ingredients other than the basic four used in all beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. Next, we tasted Amstel Light, which is both a lager and refreshing. Blue Moon is a wheat beer spiced with coriander and orange peel, making it a specialty beer and my personal favorite. I.P.A. Inversion followed with its hoppy kick (any beer with the term “Indian” in it is going to be hoppy). Then we moved on to Sam Adams Oktoberfest Beer, with its four different roasts of barley that gives it hints of caramel and toffee. Next we tried Paulaner, which comes from the Paulaner Brewery, first opened in 1634 by German monks. “Bocks” are hearty beers, high in alcohol and go through a long second fer-
mentation. A Doppelbock (double bock) has an even higher alcohol content and traditionally the brewer gives it a name ending in “ator”—like Spaten Optimator, which is what we had next. Deschutes Black Butte Porter is rich with chocolate essence. And lastly, we had Murphy’s Stout, a beer that comes in a can equipped with a nitrogen widget. You know, that plastic thing that clicks around in the can. It actually gives it a “pub effect,” making it taste as though it

came straight from a keg. When I was done, I felt confident that I could go out into the world and choose a beer that I actually knew something about. Remember, beer can be your friend and one of the best social lubricants. And October is the month when we pay homage to that. MTW

Hawai`i International Film Festival Monday-Thursday (Oct. 23-26) at the Maui Mall in Kahului [MOVIES!] Now in its 26th year, the Hawai`i International Film Festival brings a dozen movies from Hawai`i and the Pacific to Maui that wouldn’t ordinarily reach our shores, much less our megaplexes. This year’s lineup includes The Shimmering, which deals with Hawaiian mythology and was partially filmed on Maui; Samoan Wedding, a comedy about four Samoan bachelors who have to be nice at a wedding; King and the Clown, about two South Korean jesters in the Chosun Dynasty who have to make their king laugh or get the axe; and Winds of God Kamikaze, a comedy about two New York comedians who get sent back in time to a Japanese suicide pilots’ school in World War II. There are also films about Vietnamese boat people, big wave surfer Sarah Gerhardt and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. For a complete schedule of films and showtimes, visit www.hiff.org or call 5798081. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
Unexpected Mall Pampering Saturday (Oct. 21), 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Lahaina Cannery Mall [HEALTH EXPO] There will be an interesting juxtaposition between the usual and unusual this weekend at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. The typically busy family shoppers will no doubt take advantage of the mall’s plethora of delicious fast food options (which reminds me—I still haven’t used my free Blizzard certificate). To do so, they’ll have to navigate unexpected and foreign obstacles. Specifically, the presenters and attendees of the Fall 2006 Healthy Hawai`i Expo. Included in your free admission are presentations by Paul Gotel, a professional life coach who will be sharing his success secrets; and Amy Leigh, a psychic channel teaching transformation and insight. The Psychic Alley will offer up palm, tarot and psychic readings, while the Pampering Place should be an ideal environment for a low-cost massage or energy healing. Vendors will be overseeing at least 30 exhibits featuring the best in nutritional products and fitness options, and music and hula demonstrations can be caught throughout the day. But I’m most excited about the appearance of Ariadne Green. She’s a local urban shaman and writer who once stopped my wife and I cold in Ace Hardware and intuitively dissected the most intimate dynamics of our relationship like a Jedi Master. I’m guessing that as she discusses the intricacies of finding a soul mate, L&L Drive Thru will no longer have the only chicken skin in the mall. [COREY NIELSEN]
THURSDAY
In Search Of... The Great Pumpkin Saturday (Oct. 21), 5:30-11 p.m. at Iao Theater [HOLIDAY PARTY/BENEFIT] This event has the promise of being the “Great Pumpkin” of the season. While “An Evening of Stars” has nothing to do with Charlie Brown, deep down in our collective thought, we are all seeking a “real Halloween.” First off, you can show up with a costume, or in evening attire, in which case you can purchase a mask, hence the Masquerade Ball. Then join the festivities which will include a foggy graveyard, littered with live performers, an abundant gourmet dinner, made possible by the restaurant’s A Saigon Café, Chez Paul Restaurant, Café O’Lei and AK’s Café. There’s also going to be a costume contest, and non-stop entertainment. Tickets are $69 in advance or $75 at door. “An Evening of Stars III” Masquerade Ball is a benefit for Maui OnStage—21 and over only. Call 2426969 for ticket info. [KEITH BENEDICT]

‘Naupaka,’ A Hawaiian Love Story Saturday (Oct. 21), 7:30 p.m. at Castle Theater [STAGE] I am an easy target when it comes to tragic love stories. Add a stage, beautiful performers and incredible musicians and I am like a moth to the flame. Peter Rockford Espiritu, director and choreographer for the Tau Dance Theatre of O`ahu, is bringing an ambitious new production of Naupaka to Maui. Although it is described as an opera, this is not your typical libretto where rotund women sing about broken hearts and betrayal. This three-act epic is more of an operatic re-telling of a Hawaiian legend and a heartrending love story told through a mixture of song, chant, hula and modern dance. The music is a blending of traditional slack-key guitar, orchestral compositions, tango and even hip-hop, creating a hybrid of artistic achievement by John Signor. The viewer is taken on a voyage of two star-crossed lovers and their ill-fated bond based on the traditional Hawaiian legend of the Naupaka half-flower, which is eternally separated. Oh, unrequited love! Tickets: $10, $25, $35, half-price for keiki. Call 2427469. [KRISTA SHERER]
DAY
The Big Cheese Olympics Sunday (Oct. 22), 3-7 p.m. at Kalama Park [FOOD FESTIVAL] There’s good cheesy and there’s bad cheesy. “Bad” cheesy is a guy all up in your face at the bar claiming you’re the most beautiful woman in the world while fiddling with his belt when you know damn well that you just got off work, your hair is pulled back tight and you’ve got eight hours of sweat and grease built up on your skin. “Good” cheesy is four hours of tasting and playing with cheese. Hurray! Cheese is one product you can find in just about any culture (ha!). It can be super soft, rock hard or anywhere in between, and the variation in flavors is limitless. It’s never a bad idea to get to know some more cheeses—unless, of course, you’re lactose intolerant. At the Cheese Olympics, the keiki can play cheesy games, like a cheese wheel-rolling contest, and a cheesecake-eating contest. Adults get to chew on cheese as well as have the opportunity to purchase cheese platters. Entertainment provided by Pito Javier and Lawa. For info, call 874-3930. [HEIDI KING]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Eastwood Deconstructs Heroism Iwo Jima becomes talking point for reality Clint Eastwood distills a wartime story of epic proportions and personal truths from the worst single engagement of World War II on the island of Iwo Jima. From the brutal reality of the bloody 40-day battle to the way a group of its soldiers were made famous and taken advantage of by their government before being discarded, the movie gives context and personality to the soldiers whose faces were hidden in the war’s most famous image. Based on James Bradley’s best-selling book about his personal journey into his father John Bradley’s wartime achievements, screenwriters William Broyles Jr. and Paul Haggis (Crash) craft a carefully organized script that breathes with poignancy, emotion, and relevance without ever succumbing to sentimentality. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal took the iconic “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” picture on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945, just five days after hundreds of warships delivered 30,000 soldiers to the shores of the small but heavily fortified Japanese island covered in black sand and volcanic ash. Far from the photo’s perceived significance of triumph, it privately revealed a more prosaic reality beneath the surface. For the picture, the photographer actually recorded a second flag raising, performed in order to insure that the original banner did not end up “tacked on some politician’s wall”
after a covetous troop leader demanded it for his own. Of the six men in the photo, only three survived long enough to be returned to America for the government’s Seventh War Loan Drive fund-raising tour to sell war bonds to the American public.
Flags of Our Fathers
★★★★★ Rated R/131 mins.
The battle for Iwo Jima came at a time when the U.S. military was broke, and only the sale of war bonds could keep the combat effort afloat. The news media’s widespread embrace of Rosenthal’s picture enabled an unprecedented phenomenon of hero/celebrity culture around the country that overshadowed the many sufferings and deaths still taking place on Iwo Jima and elsewhere. The three surviving flag-raisers Marines Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), Native American Ira Hares (Adam Beach), and Navy Corpsman John “Doc” Bradley (Ryan Phillippe) resist personal issues of guilt as they appear before ardent fans to explain that the real heroes of the battle are the men killed in action or still fighting the war. Doc Bradley is the group’s spokesperson who ends his humble statement with a plea for the public to purchase war bonds. James Bradley

said that the goal for his book was to break down the hero myths about the men in the picture. Just as the film follows the somber fate of the three soldiers propped up as war bond hawkers, it also chronicles the fates of the other three soldiers in the photo who died on the battlefield. The deaths of Sergeant Michael Strank (Barry Pepper), Pfc. Harlan Block (Benjamin Walker), and Franklin Sousley (Joseph Cross) give poignant context to the fireworks specta-
cle at home where Bradley, Gagnon and Hares reenact their flag-raising effort atop a giant paper mache hill in the middle of Chicago’s Soldier Field. Flags of Our Fathers is a tremendous film about the very beginning of celebrity worship, and our need to invent and memorialize brave men. It is a deeply heartfelt and highly original war movie that takes time to get your head arounddays, weeks, or months. MTW

Chris Isaak A play in one act SAMANTHA: Hey Krista, what do you know about Chris Isaak? I’ve got to write a story about him and I don’t know what to say.
ANTHONY: He was in Silence of the Lambs.
KRISTA: Other than that one song that was on MTV with the hot model, nothing.
SAMANTHA: That’s not a crappy movie.
TOMMY: See?
TOMMY: No, but his cameo might’ve been. ANTHONY: I hated that black and white video. He was trying too hard. He was always moaning and really… how do I put this? It’s like, “Look at me, I’m sensitive! Look at me, I’ve got a hot Asian chick I’m sleeping with!”
SAMANTHA: Hey Joey, what do you know about Chris Isaak? JOEY: I know he had that hot girl from the Guess ads in that one video. And that his Showtime show was mildly entertaining. It was supposed to be like a guys’ version of Sex and the City, talking about dating and stuff, but anybody who knows anything about guys knows that we’re not interested in talking about that stuff.
SAMANTHA: The girl in the video isn’t Asian. ANTHONY: No, but I think in real life he had a hot Asian girlfriend. SAMANTHA: How do you know that?
SAMANTHA: Maybe he’s sensitive. ANTHONY: Because years ago a colleague of mine had a huge crush on him and then she saw him out in public and he was casually dismissive and then she hated him. JEN: Wasn’t he a one-hit wonder? I’m trying to remember the name but a Roxy Music song keeps coming to mind. SAMANTHA: Actually, no. He’s had a lot of hits. But everybody always just remembers that one video on the beach. He even had, like, a TV show—I think it was called The Chris Isaak Show or something. ANTHONY: Was it on public access? SAMANTHA: No! It was either on cable or one of the major networks. It was a variety show, I believe. I think I know quite a bit about him ‘cause he’s from the Bay Area. And he’s funny. Oh, and I know he used to live with his mom.
ANTHONY: Who said I despised him? SAMANTHA: Whatever. I think he’s hot. And he’s multi-talented. ANTHONY: Didn’t he make one of those shows that came out about the moon landing where he played an astronaut? I’m gonna look that up right now.
Chris Isaak Friday (Oct. 20), 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC. Opening act: Makana. Tickets: $35, $45, $55, $65. Call 242-SHOW.
[BRAD walks in.] BRAD: Who’s a hound dog? JOEY: Chris Isaak. BRAD: Oh, he’s awesome! I’ve seen him a bunch of times. Back in the day, he wore a mirror-ball suit—it was fucking awesome! He comes out, playing his guitar, and then the lights shine on him. It was kind of his shtick. But he’s an awesome performer, and a great guy. After one of his shows, he did a “meet and greet” backstage, signing autographs and talking to people—he even gave my wife a hug. And he’s hilarious, too. WENDY: I like Chris Isaak, too. He has such a unique, strong voice. I saw him once in L.A. at the House of Blues. I have his autograph on a CD somewhere…
ANTHONY: I used to live with my mom, too. But that was, like, over a decade ago.
[Short pause while ANTHONY runs back to his office. Two minutes later he returns.]
SAMANTHA: Well, he was living with his mom as an adult when he was, uh…
ANTHONY: It was a mini series called From the Earth to the Moon, produced by Tom Hanks. I think it was on HBO. He played an astronaut. And he played a SWAT officer in the Silence of the Lambs.
ANTHONY: Overexposed?
JOEY: I think he just tries to play it off like he’s sensitive but he’s really a hound dog.
SAMANTHA: Popular! But a big deal was made about it and how it made him such a humble guy.
SAMANTHA [ignoring ANTHONY as TOMMY walks in]: Tommy, you know anything about Chris Isaak?
ANTHONY: Yeah, that also repulsed me. It’s like, “Look at me, I’m humble! Look at me, I’m a superstar!”
TOMMY: I know a lot about Chris Isaak! He’s a one-hit wonder. You know why I don’t like him? He wears that little country boy tie thing.
BRAD: He’s, like, the shit. And he’s in that last John Waters’ movie, A Dirty Shame. And he’s, like, the Bakersfield guy. ANTHONY: No, he’s from Stockton. SAMANTHA: How do YOU know that? ANTHONY: I just looked him up. SAMANTHA: Oh. I was born in Bakersfield, you know.
SAMANTHA: It was a good song! It was called, “Wicked Game.” And he wasn’t moaning. ANTHONY: That’s right, yes it was. But it seemed to go on forever. It sounded like he was in pain. I think it was his conscience—he knew he was a fraud. SAMANTHA: Why do you despise him?

SAMANTHA: You mean a bolero tie? You hate him because of a bolero tie? Everybody wore those back in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s. TOMMY: How about the pompadour? That cowboy vest? The chiseled manly good looks coming out of someone so wimpy? And didn’t he do a bunch of crappy movie cameos?
TOMMY: You were born in Bakersfield? You’ve never claimed that before! BRAD: Nobody claims that! Except for Buck Owens. But no, I mean Chris Isaak’s got that Bakersfield sound. He plays that classic rockabilly thing. But he’s done some bad movies, too, like Little Buddha. And I didn’t like his TV show. I just didn’t get it. TOMMY: Hey, does anybody know if that one big church is doing their Halloween thing this year? MTW

The Prophet - Oct. 26-27. A new play, third in a trilogy, from an internationally acclaimed Maori playwright. A young boy takes his own life, and five of his cousins return to their “home” on the east coast of New Zealand to grieve; over the course of three days, they cope with the loss of one of their own, and grow into adulthood. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Beware of excess this week. Whether your particular poison takes the form of alcohol, sex or (very likely) fat and sugar, the likelihood that you’ll overindulge is quite high right now. It may seem, from your perspective, like just an occasional treat or extravagance but in this case it’s potentially relationship- or job-threatening. I know I frequently encourage you Librans to explore extremes, but this week your usual instincts should prevail: the middle path is indeed the best one.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Don’t let yourself become overwhelmed with self-doubt regarding certain questionable decisions you’ve made in the past. Luckily, this week you have a couple guardian angels who’ll be there—if you let them—to help reassure you that you’ve made the right choice, or set you on the correct path if you’ve screwed up. All you have to do is resist your talent for introspection long enough to notice and listen to these helpful companions.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I sure hope neither of us ever decides that we’ve actually “seen it all.” We both crave surprises and new experiences. Every once in a while I guess you probably also get bored with your circumstances but can’t quite rouse your imagination enough to figure out where or how to indulge your craving for exploration and expansion. Luckily, this week holds the cure to that particular ailment. Keep your eyes peeled; you’re likely to see so many doors open (each revealing a glimpse into many possible futures), that exploring them will keep you busy for years to come.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
WEBSITE
Creation is the key. I’m obsessed with it. I like making things. Some of these things I suck at; others less so. But that doesn’t matter; what matters is that I’ve made something new, and enjoyed them all. Too much of your life is abstract at the moment. You need to use your hands to create something. Forget whether you’re any “good” or not; there’ll always be someone “better” than you, anyway. Just make something new. It’s the cure for what ails you.

You’re a confused bee, trapped indoors. You’re buzzing against the glass, frustratingly uncomprehending why you can’t get to that gorgeous expanse of blue sky right in front of you. Meanwhile, as if that weren’t enough, you have to dodge potentially deadly slaps with a rolled-up magazine. What you don’t know is that someone’s opened the window right next to the one you’re trapped behind, and their attempts to shoo you towards it are meant to help you, not compound your misery. Let yourself be swatted in the right direction, so you can zip out into the open and finally escape the trap that could otherwise be your doom.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You’ve been taxiing down the runway for years but haven’t been able to build up enough speed to get airborne. Now, just ahead of you, is a long, straight expanse of smooth concrete. Here’s your chance to get aloft for the first time in ages. Take advantage of it! Increase your momentum, immediately. If you hit full speed right now, you’ll be in the air long before the runway ends, but the thing’s not endless. If you wait at all to achieve take-off velocity, you’ll miss this window of opportunity. I can’t tell you exactly when you’ll have your next chance to soar but I can tell you this: it’s not soon.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Radio has never sounded so good for
West Maui “Enhanced Radio Signal” Tune in to your favorite stations in West Maui as we provide you with alternative frequencies
KPOA 93.5 FM – Westside tune to 92.9 FM KJKS 99.9 KISS FM – Westside tune to 99.3 FM KJMD 98.3 DaJAM – Westside tune to 107.3 FM KLHI 101.1 The Point – Westside tune to 101.7 FM
Our pasts are just stories we tell ourselves, not “reality.” You’ve let your past limit you, but it’s really about the stories you’re telling yourself about it, not what “really” happened. You’ve unconsciously distorted your own perception of it, actually robbing yourself of power. You have a chance this week to “rewrite” history; that is, reconsider your perception of it. What standards should you use when developing a new interpretation of your personal story? Not necessarily the ones that make you “look good,” whatever that means. Simply make it into the best story possible. What’s that mean? Why, the one that enables your brightest future, of course.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Sometimes it’s helpful to think of yourself as a soul simply clothed, for the moment, in a body. Then you can separate your idea of yourself from whatever’s happening to your body and address it in a more rational, dispassionate way. For example, an emotional reaction to being overweight might involve miserable self-deprivation and recrimination, whereas a more balanced one would coordinate a sustainably edited diet with increased exercise. Your knee-jerk flip-outs to your circumstances aren’t helping anyone. Take a step back from the situation to assess it. In this case, that might mean actually taking a step back from yourself.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your scars don’t make you ugly, not to anyone who’s lived. To me, scars usually make people more beautiful. Don’t be embarrassed about the pain you’ve suffered. It’s a part of who you are—in fact, you wouldn’t be that person without having endured hardship, nor would you be able to appreciate the joyful times so well, if you’d never experienced misery. You’ve done your best to cover over and hide your scars, but I think that’s the wrong strategy, especially right now. Be honest about them. It’ll make you feel good, at least. And at best, it’ll make someone else feel a lot better about you.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This week’s about balance. You’ve resisted moderation of your emotions because in some corner of your brain their extremity helps you feel alive. Ironically, however, more balance means more intensity, not less. What you’re giving up is being helplessly at the mercy of your out-of-control emotions, which means you need no longer fear them. Since they’ll no longer (or at least less often) knock you on your back, you can embrace them in ways you never have. In other words, adopt the middle path this time; it’ll make your life more vivid and rich, not less.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Usually you’re one of “the cool kids,” but occasionally you find yourself on the outside of the inner circle of some group of people you find compelling. I know how awful that can make you feel, especially because you, at least, know you really belong among them, even if they haven’t figured it out yet. This week, luckily, you have a good chance of catching their collective eye and revealing just what they’ve been missing out on. Ironically, once you’re inside the clique, you might realize you don’t actually belong there at all. I guess this falls under the category of “what you see is not always what you get.”
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) A Virgo acquaintance recently moved into a new apartment. Once there, he decided the place had a “bad feeling” about it, and tried everything to rid the apartment of its negative vibe. He burnt sage, had a new age friend bless the space with her pouch full of crystals, tried feng shui, and did everything short of calling in a voodoo priestess. It never once occurred to him that the feeling might be coming from inside him, instead of from the rooms he inhabited. I don’t know you. But I ask you to consider the possibility that your problems are internal, not external. Just asking yourself the question, I guarantee, will bring you at least a little closer to resolving them.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY
BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM
Damnation and Hellfire I am calling about what you wrote in the October 12 issue of your paper. You know, we’ve all been talking about it in the office and we agree this is really bad. Why do you write such filth? You know, children can read this. And it’s a free publication. Why do you write about stuff like this in a free publication on the street that children can read? You know, children will pick this up and think it’s funny and it’s not funny. I am disappointed that as a woman, you would do this. Why don’t you write for a dirty magazine or something? I’ll bet you’re not a mother. Are you a mother? Why can’t you write about something else? Not this… this… smut! I hope I don’t have to read this kind of thing in the future in your paper. -Anonymous phone call received Friday, Oct. 13, regarding my column “Slippery When Wet!” Dear Caller, Since you hung up on me and gave me no chance for explanation—i.e. a mutual discussion or clarification of something that removes misunderstandings—or defense, and did not take my patient silence as respectful accommodation, hear me now. I have thought much about what you said. My column is meant to provide readers with a look at the social life of a single, educated woman on Maui. My hope is that sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s insightful or that sometimes people can relate to something I’m saying. Mostly, my hope is that it’s entertaining. But the best thing about this column is that if you don’t think it’s entertaining or insightful or funny, you can—as you said in your call to our General Manager—wipe your ass with it when you use the toilet. And you most definitely do not have to read it. “As a woman,” I am proud to have this power and freedom to voice my opinion, thoughts and feelings in this medium. And no, I’m not a mother. But that doesn’t mean I eat children for breakfast. But I do have faith in your good parenting. Is it misplaced? First of all, I feel like if anybody’s reading anything these days, it’s a good thing. Literacy, like knowledge, is power. And yes, this column can be of an adult nature—that’s why it’s in the back of the paper. But I also hope that parents, like you, will teach their children right from wrong, and will help them to make appropriate choices. There are many things kids can read, watch or Google for free. But sheltering them, or harboring ignorance, is not the solution. To be honest, writing this column hasn’t exactly been easy for me either. Take my mom, for instance. When she first started reading my stories, she was aghast that I remembered everything from my wild 1970’s upbringing when, clearly, she did not. Then she was horrified to learn that I knew anything about Ben Wa Balls. But when I wrote about my grandmother, Mom made me read it at her farewell cocktail party, and when I wrote intimately about a bad past relationship, she said she finally got its significance. At last, there was an understanding between us. And it was probably the best compliment I’ve ever received. You know, I’m surprised by your comments; if anything, this particular column about coital injuries was more anti-sex than smutty. Basically I was saying, “Hey people, this kind of doom and destruction can happen to you, too, should you decide to put the candle in the pumpkin!” And somehow, I just don’t think Hustler has a huge need for an article on fractured penises. But thanks, anyway, for the encouragement. Newsflash, Monday, Oct. 16: I just found out that you merely read the first four words of my column before making your “outraged” calls.
