LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR BERTRAM SPEAKS OUT

WHAT TRUTH?

Eh brah—OK, I didn’t really catch the “gadfly” thing last time (“Know Your Candidates!” Oct. 26, 2006). I knew it wasn’t good but I had to look it up. Egad! Gad*fly: a fly that bites or annoys livestock! Will your attacks never end? Do you know how high a gadfly could fly if a gadfly could fly high? At least I do. But I don’t gad (to wander about restlessly with little or no purpose) and I’m no gaffer (old man, rustic). But now you find me short, with short gray hair! Am I also shortsighted? What are my other shortcomings? Still with my shortness, you can’t get over it! Like getting over a cold or a divorce? What about getting through or around it? And I’m always speaking (won’t shut up) at public hearings (where no one listens). Finally you accuse me of “sitting pretty over [in the 11th]” (“Midterm Follies,” Nov. 9, 2006)— I’ve never over-sat in my district ever and I pledge to your readers to address this and many other serious community issues in the Legislature. And I’m not old. -Representative-elect Joe Bertram III, 11th District

Anthony, brah, congratulations for finally telling the masses about the truth! (“The Brave and the Dead,” Nov. 9, 2006). Some of us have heard such stories... usualy repeated upon faith to defend the oppressed, desperate and disposed in this society. Your article showed facts that cannot be argued that there was indeed a larger, intentional, devious, evil hand involved in the crack epidemic that strangled the inner city... and then the suburbs (which finally caused people to notice). Why would they (the US government) do such things? To keep the poor and dependant poor and dependant. There is no better “boogey man” in America than a cracked-out black man with a gun. -Arthur Madison, Lahaina

DOESN’T LIKE TO RALLY Why do we allow war or other dramas to be the only way we can meet our neighbors and create or participate in a sense of community (“Warrior Society,” Nov. 2, 2006)? Why have we forgotten how to live together in peace? Why do we need a common enemy to “rally” around so that we feel smarter and superior? Why do we let warmongers with no love for the wellbeing of their country jerk us around? Let’s figure it out, people. It’s called being responsible for the wellbeing of the community and for ourselves. Actually, it’s called Democracy. -Blue Moon, via email

Anthony Pignataro responds: Thanks for the compliment, but I should make clear that at no time has any evidence surfaced that the CIA intentionally moved crack cocaine into inner cities to eradicate African Americans. The CIA admitted that its assets working for the contra rebels sold drugs in America’s inner cities during the 1980s, but no evidence of a larger conspiracy has ever surfaced. What’s more, reporter Gary Webb never made such assertions either, but that didn’t stop the mainstream media from attacking him for exactly that nonsense.

If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar— that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. We also reserve the right to edit your letters. Send your letters to the editor via email (letters@mauitime.com), regular mail (Letters to the Editor, Maui Time Weekly, 33 N. MONEY MONEY MONEY Huge changes this week as we pour over some recent campaign finance reports, filed with the state Office of Elections in late September. The campaign contributions from various members of the Maui 10 are, as expected, quite large, but the above rankings stem not from who gave the most (any fool can hand over a grand to Dain Kane’s mayoral race) but who gave the smartest. And that was clearly Makena-developing Dowling Company, donor of nearly $49,000 from Jan. 1 through Sept. 9 (records covering the later part of the campaign aren’t yet available), $12,800 of which went to Maui candidates. There was County Councilman Joe Pontanilla ($500, reelected); County Council candidate Mike Victorino ($1,000, elected); Council candidate Gladys Baisa ($1,000, elected); Councilman Mike Molina ($800, reelected) and Representative Kyle Yamashita ($2,000, reelected). In fact, except for the $150 in Longs gift cards to Dain Kane and $250 to Council candidate Sam Kalalau (matched by $250 to victorious opponent Bill Medeiros), Dowling didn’t back any losers. Too bad the same can’t be said for A&B, which lavished $2,500 on Kane’s quixotic run for mayor, another grand on Kimo Apana’s equally failed mayoral race and $300 on Representative Kam Tanaka, who couldn’t even get out of the primary election. Maui Land & Pine gave to all the usual suspects (Representative Joe Souki, Victorino, Molina, Yamashita, Pontanilla, Baisa) as well as newcomers Joe Bertram III and Angus McKelvey and losers Kane ($1,000) and Apana ($500). Carlyle Group-owned Hawaiian Telcom evidently has a lot to learn about politics, having given a miserly $1,300 to local candidates including Pontanilla, Souki, Yamashita, Representative Bob Nakasone and Representative Chris Halford, who earlier this year announced he wasn’t even going to run again. Monsanto, which donated $1,250 to various candidates in the above period and grows tons of genetically modified crops on Maui, didn’t give a dime to any island candidate. And Tesoro, which raised more than $11,000, didn’t give anything at all.

PINEAPPLE COSTS Maui Land & Pine would have topped this week’s ranking were it not for a pesky Nov. 4, 2006 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story detailing how the company lost $2.5 million in the third quarter, due to costs associated with that grand pineapple packing plant the company boasted about a few months ago. Since the facility is far more automated than previous operations, the company insists it will eventually save tons of money on the deal. But revenue on the company’s development side was also off, down to a mere $2 million from the $7.6 million in the same quarter of 2005. MTW

‘Big Dreams’

Hearings

The men who love riding bulls For the very first time in the Professional Bull Riders’ (PBR) history, top-ranked bull riding athletes got to compete on Maui. On Nov. 10 and 11, men from Australia, Brazil and even Texas rode bulls at the Myron Duarte Maui Challenge at War Memorial Stadium. Replacing wax with rosin, they approached bull riding with the same love that a local surfer might prepare a board. This makes sense, as bull riders in general are as hard to grasp as our local surfers. They tend to stick to themselves due to the fact that they are not often understood by the outside world. Both seem to be chasing that perfect ride. The two-time world champion, Chris Shivers, has surpassed the $3 million mark in career earnings, making him the first person in bull riding history to reach this mark. “Just kinda grew up around it,” he said with a knife-like look in his eyes when I asked him how he got started. “The opportunity was there for me, I could ride as many bulls in one day as I wanted. All I needed to do was take advantage of it. This is my life; it’s where I have my everything. If I quit right now I wouldn’t be happy the rest of my life.” During the competition I was up against the fence taking pictures, literally dodging bullshit as it was kicked up towards the gate where I was on the brink of risk. Because I was so close to the action, I could really feel the thrill. But I was still curious why any human would want to get on the back of a bucking bull. “Big hopes, big dreams!” Shivers said. “I would rather go with pride in the front of 10,000 people than die in a car wreck. The only fear I have is the fear of losing. No one wants to lose.” Later, during the after-party at Cheeseburger Island Style in the Shops at Wailea I sat with riders Rob Bell and Thomas Taylor, who has a scar under

There are two main citizen panels that ostensibly run the county’s alcohol operations. The Liquor Commission, which grants liquor licenses, and the Board of Adjudication, which takes away licenses from establishments found guilty of liquor law violations. They both work very fast and, sometimes, at cross purposes. Take the case of Smiley’s Super Service, which came up before the Liquor Commission on Nov. 8 of this year. The owner of a convenience store in Kahului, Smiley’s appeared before the commission to get its Retail General license transferred from former owner 2 Go Tesoro. Normally a quick, routine thing, the matter got bogged down when Commissioner Curt Morimoto asked Liquor Control Officer Mike Kawagishi— the LC staffer who reports to the commision on new licensees—how many liquor law violations the Tesoro station had racked up during the years.

Thomas Taylor

the left side of his jaw from a bull’s horn. Both agreed that riders aren’t in it for the money. Taylor, a breeder who’s responsible for “Taylor Made Bucking Bulls,” has been Bell’s advisor for many years. Chris Shivers “Not only because he rides so well, but also because of the obstacles he has overcome to get where he is today.” Taylor said. “Believing is everything. He is going to the top!” Bell has impressed bull riding fans since he rode his first calf at age two. He won his first buckle at that event. By age 15, he was riding big bulls and competing in rodeos. “Ninety-five percent of the guys who get into it for the money don’t ride any longer because they lost the desire to do it,” he said. “For most here in PBR land, the heart is what leads them on. Take away the title, and nothing would change.” MTW

LC Watch

It turned out the place had never seen any real violations—just some administrative stuff that would have earned them scolding letters—but the question was extraordinary. Clearly, it showed that in all the records and papers handed out to the commissioners before every license applicant appears before the panel, the LC staff doesn’t put in an accounting of any previous violations the establishment might have incurred in the past. It also took LC staff a few minutes get the necessary records to answer Morimoto’s question. Morimoto’s inquiry was also unique—in fact, in the last couple years I’ve covered the LC, I’m hard-pressed to think of another time when commissioners wanted to delve into an applicant’s past transgressions. Most of the time, the two public hearings all licensee applicants have to go through are quick affairs taking just a few minutes. This raises a fascinating paradox of a county quick to hand out liquor licenses and even quicker to slap them down or even take them away. But that’s the Maui LC for you.

WHO GAVE: Dale Castleton WHO RECEIVED: Charmaine Tavares DATE: Oct. 6, 2006 AMOUNT: $250

From 2002 to the first weeks of 2006, county officials were more or less in constant contact with Kihei nursery owner Dale Castleton. They wanted Castleton to allow Maui Invasive Species Committee people onto the property to spray for dreaded coqui frogs, which at the time were infesting the place. Alternately sympathetic and then intransigent, Castleton—who also has a proposed subdivision slowly making its way through the county’s Planning Department—dragged negotiations on into the winter of 2005. Mostly he insisted that the frogs were beneficial to his nursery. Just a couple days before New Year’s, Mayor Alan Arakawa—who lost his reelection bid to Tavares—took the unprecedented step of appearing at Castleton’s nursery in a last ditch effort to get him to agree to spraying. It worked and sprayers began visiting the nursery a few weeks later, though the whole matter clearly didn’t endear Castleton to Arakawa.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

Darwinian terms, this is an evolutional disaster just waiting to happen. As of press time park officials have no suspects.

THURSDAY, Nov. 9 Two days after it could have possibly made a difference, The Maui News reports that Maui County Clerk Roy Hiraga has opened an investigation into where exactly County Councilman-elect Bill Medeiros actually lives. According to a protest filed by Hana resident Cheryl Vasconcellos—who the News said “resides with” Medeiros opponent Sam Kalalau—Medeiros doesn’t actually live in East Maui. According to the article, Medeiros himself mentioned during the campaign that while he owns property in Hana, he actually works in West Maui and lives during the week in Kahului. “He said he returns to Hana on weekends and receives his mail there,” reported the News. If that isn’t being in touch with his constituents—or at least the constituents who deliver his mail—what is?

FRIDAY, Nov. 10

PHOTO: COURTESY HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 8 Try as I might, I just can’t make fun of this: a rare, endangered Nene—the state bird of Hawai`i—got killed yesterday by a “careless driver,” according to a release sent out today by Haleakala National Park officials. This is, of course, very serious, though I have to point out that the press release was a bit melodramatic in a CSI way: “Several visitors reported the dead Nene to Park Ranger Kiera Strohm-Herman at about 11:00 a.m.,” stated the release. “Biologist Raina Kaholo`a retrieved the dead Nene from the road, about 1/4 mile above the park’s headquarters. The Nene was in the up-bound lane. The death occurred sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Visibility is not considered to be a factor since the weather was clear and sunny.” Some Nene walk along the road, which they often cross to “get to the other side” (the quote is from the press release, people) because drivers often slow down to feed them. As a result, “Nene associate feeding with cars and have learned to approach rather than flee from cars,” says the release. In

Voter turnout in Maui County for the 2006 General Election was a whopping 48.3 percent, says the state Office of Elections and today’s Maui News. Woohoo! And state turnout was a bit better at 52.6 percent, but that was the worst figure ever for Hawai`i. Today’s News offers a variety of explanations for the anemic interest in all things politics: uninteresting candidates, heavily favored incumbents, boring candidates, lots of transient residents, unappealing candidates and just plain lousy candidates. All good reasons, though we can also suspect that the paper’s partially bogus, thoroughly lame editorial “One vote can decide” which ran on Election Day might have also played a role. Predicated on the view that it’s important for everyone to vote because “One vote can, and does, make a difference,” the editorial is largely based on a list of shabby urban myths—one vote decided English would be our national language, kept President Andrew Johnson from being impeached, got Adolf Hitler to power and so forth—that have been floating around the country for decades and obviously went completely unchecked by The Maui News. In fact, the myths are so old they duped columnists Abigail van Buren

SATURDAY, Nov. 11 Recovering.

SUNDAY, Nov. 12 You know it’s a slow news day when CNN reports that a shark attacked a tourist in South Maui. But it apparently happened, with the 29-year-old Canadian guy suffering cuts on his left hand and thigh. State officials promptly closed all beaches from Kam I to Kam III. Heading over to Charley Young Beach in the afternoon to see what a closed beach looked like, I instead found dozens of sun worshippers milling around next to a large shark warning sign posted in the sand and a few brave fools frolicking in the water. Love that Maui attitude.

MONDAY, Nov. 13 Not sure if this is in honor of Veteran’s Day, but the Pentagon is planning on sending a bunch of National Guard units back to Iraq. Now I don’t know what’s more alarming—the fact that Iraq has become so precarious that Washington is squeezing everything they can from NG soldiers or that the citizen soldiers are

starting to disagree. In a statement of unusual candor for a uniformed officer, state adjutant general Robert G. F. Lee says in today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin that Hawai`i combat units are still under strength from their last trip to the war. “We won’t be reset until April 2007,” he told the paper. Turns out that a year spent in the desert whittled the 29th Brigade Combat Team’s equipment so much that even now it has just 30 percent of the vehicles and supplies it needs. Not to sharpen too fine a point on all this—we are at war, after all, and stuff gets worn and broken in war—but isn’t this kinda sorta what Democrat Randy Iwase was talking about during his ultimately fruitless bid to unseat Governor Linda Lingle? Iwase charged that Lingle wasn’t arguing as Washington deployed more than this state’s “fair share” of National Guard troops to Iraq. Seems to me that Lee’s statement indicates at the very least that, even assuming Iwase was wrong about the past, he’s dead on about the future.

TUESDAY, Nov. 14 Well, they finally did it: today the Maui Planning Commission finally gave the nod to Kapalua Mauka’s Phase 2. This means there’s now little standing in the way of Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s plans to build more million dollar homes and yet another golf course in Kapalua. At first the commission was hesitant to approve, with commissioners using words like “weasel” and “chicken shit” to describe ML&P’s plan to build required affordable homes as far from Kapalua Mauka as possible. But the commission eventually came around. Was there ever any doubt? Anthony Pignataro would like to know why no TV network aired Apocalypse Now during the Veteran’s Day weekend. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD FIT SHRIMP The chosen professional interest of biologist David Scholnick of Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) is in how shrimp act when they get an infection, which he gauged by building a tiny treadmill in order to run crustaceans through their paces to measure blood lactate levels. “As far as I know,” Scholnick told LiveScience.com in October, “this is the first time that shrimp have been exercised on a treadmill.” To increase the shrimps’ stress, Scholnick designed tiny backpacks out of duct tape but still found that healthy shrimp could go for about an hour without fatigue.

CLEANING UP THE CITY A civic group in Vienna, Austria, gathered 157,000 signatures on petitions in May and presented them to city officials to encourage a government program toward cleaner streets. Under the proposal, the government would assign the populace the task of counting and mapping dog droppings as a first step to greater penalties for owners who fail to clean up after their mutts. Critics were pessimistic that citizens wanted to count and map dog droppings.

GREAT ART! Simon Pope’s “Gallery Space Recall” exhibit at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, Wales, in October is a startlingly empty room, with patrons called upon to supply the art by imagining another art show they have seen so that, wrote Pope, the two exhibits “exist at two locations simultaneously, both here and there.” Pope wrote that the exhibit suggested the brain-injury disorder “reduplicative paramnesia,” in which a person has a delusional belief that something exists at two places at once.

The Havering town council in Romford, England, prepared a 300page report in October, the result of a 12-month investigation, to find out who had heckled a speaker at a zoning meeting by making “baaa” noises. The authors said they had narrowed the list of suspects. And in September, London’s mayor Ken Livingstone defended his downtown anti-pigeon program, which consisted of empowering two hawks to scare the birds

A 33-year-old woman was detained by police in September after complaints by residents at a mobile home park in Michigan City, Ind., that she had been having sex in an untinted-windowed limousine on one of the park’s streets, in front of what grew to be a large crowd, mostly yelling at her for her indecency. At one point, according to police, the otherwise-occupied woman yelled back at the crowd defiantly that she was “doing adult business” and “I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.” MTW

In October, Robert Russel Moore, 33, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the burglary of an Arby’s in Prince Frederick, Md. Actually, Moore was assistant manager of the restaurant and was identified by clues from the surveillance tape. Four employees said they recognized the burglar’s body shape, clothing and (when he bent over) the distinctive top portion of his buttocks, as being those of Moore. The owner of the restaurant said he had had to counsel Moore “more than once” about the inadvertent exposure of his butt crack.

It was early in the morning of Sept. 1 when the alarm sounded in Station 6 in Kihei. As the truck passed Sugar Beach it was clear that the fires raging across the Pali weren’t going to be put out in one night. Engines 1 and 2 were already there when the Station 6 crew arrived. They had been concentrating on getting to the head of the fire and protecting the Wind Farm, so Engine 6—which had just four firefighters, the minimal crew—and a few tankers moved to protect the power lines and Ma`alaea itself. Normally with large fires like the one on the Pali, firefighters mop it up or, as they say, “shoot it down well.” But in these fires, which ended up shutting down the Pali for virtually all of Sept. 1, high winds continuously re-ignited the flames. Fire crews found their only option was to “mitigate the damages”—monitor and protect the highway flanks and power lines. Being that it was a low brush fire, the crews worked together to “find a system” well into the morning. “It was intense but it was fun,” firefighter Lani

Gomes told me later. “The first day was just damage control and then after that we were just stomping out the smaller fires. We had very minimal water so we had to use hand tools a lot of the time.” I told her how dramatic it had been for me to watch half the mountain lit up like embers in a bonfire. “Yeah, it was beautiful, though,” she said. According to the Madison, Wisconsinbased group Women in the Fire Service Inc., there are more than 6,000 female firefighters in the United States. The state of Hawai`i currently employs 10 women in four different departments, with Maui claiming two of them. Gomes is one, working out of Station 6. Valerie Brandon is based at Station 13 in Kula. A few weeks ago I met both women at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku. Brandon arrived first. She wasn’t wearing a uniform and looked fresh from the beach, but I knew it had to be her. She looked as if she were in the best possible shape a woman could be in, possessing a professional athlete’s physique

and body type that most women envy. A few minutes later an ambulance pulled up and Gomes and her partner walked into the café. Gomes flashed me an infectious smile as she introduced herself. I could tell she was a Maui girl by the rhythm in her speech. It also turned that we had gone to Saint Anthony together. Not as tall as Brandon, she projected the feeling of someone who could hold her own. The two women ordered coffee and we sat down. Brandon told me that firefighting wasn’t something she had always wanted to do. She had heard that the job was physically active and exciting, which convinced her that she would enjoy it. First she took the department’s written test. Passing that, she took a two-day physical agility test. After that was a personal interview. The process took a year and a half—which was usual— and then the department accepted her and she eventually joined the team at Station 13. It was somewhat similar for Gomes. She said it was important to her to be a part of the communi-

ty. Before she had decided to be a firefighter, she had worked as an accountant but decided she needed a change of pace. She had always loved exercising and working out, and wanted to find a career that would stimulate her. Firefighter training is rigorous and takes four months. Because they were both in top shape, they were more vertically than physically challenged. They explained that many of the obstacles encountered in the fitness tests were created for the height of a typical man. Even the shorter guys found themselves having to be resourceful at times. Gomes said that their strength was more in agility and that their size sometimes came in handy. When it came to climbing ladders or crawling into a small opening, they said that their size is always useful. “When it comes to extrication of cars, we can jump into the cars because we’re smaller,” Gomes said. “We’re more flexible too, so jumping into the window for a man can sometimes be awkward. Brandon agreed. “In the beginning of training they tell you right away that two people will not make it,” she said. “So there is a competitive side to it, too. They do that on purpose: put you under a lot of stress to build your ability to tolerate stress on the job. “It’s similar to military training where they break you down a bit and then build you back up,” Brandon added. “It’s almost every man for themselves while you’re in, but they’re a lot more supportive once you’re done.” Brandon said that although firefighting was still predominantly a male endeavor, she felt that most men knew that women in the station houses was “the wave of the future.” In searching the history of female firefighters, I found very little information about them, which is probably understandable, since there haven’t been very many of them. What surprised me though was that many of the stories I read were written in the early 1800’s and conveyed inspirational tales of women arbitrarily jumping into the line of duty. In 1912, because of a shortage of daytime fire fighters, the Fire Chief of Los Angeles promoted the LAFD’s first all-women volunteer company. Led by Captain Marie Stack, it consisted of just two other women. But because of the vast size of the county, two other female companies formed soon after. One was called the Society Fire Department, while the other called themselves the Wilmington Park Fire Ladies. All were trained to work hand-drawn, two-wheel hose reels that had to be pulled on a rig down the street. But it wasn’t until 1973 that Sandra Forcier became the first known paid firefighter. Once a Public Safety Officer, which is a combination of a police officer and a firefighter, she is now the Battalion Chief of the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In Hawai`i, we too have seen the winds of change. Debbie Eleneki, who came from a family of firefighters, recently became the first female to earn the rank of captain in the

Honolulu Fire Department. Even with today’s kids, female firefighters are still a novelty. Gomes told me how good it made her feel when the kids would come into the station on school field trips. “The little girls point and whisper to each other, ‘That’s a girl! Oh my God!’” she said.

Valerie Brandon

Lani Gomes

Back in 2003 Brandon found herself battling a blaze on Molokai. “I was called over for one of those big ones and they were doing stand-offs,” she said. “The fire is 25 feet high or higher and you have to make a stand and you’re wondering whether we’re gonna be able to fight this thing off. The winds change direction and swirl and sometimes the fire comes right back at you. The theories they came up with for wild land fire fighting weren’t done on Molokai so it can get a little scary.” As firefighters, Brandon and Gomes have to do everything from emergency medical response, “hazmat” (the handling of hazardous materials), rope rescue, swift water training and even just driving the truck. “You have to pick your strength and excel at that because there is no way to be an expert at all of them,” Brandon said. I asked them what the least favorite parts of the job were. “Cooking,” Brandon teased. Gomes said it was the tragedies that occur within the medical portion of her work. “Sometimes you lose people,” she said. “You just hope it’s not someone you or your family knows. We have a tendency to keep ourselves separate but there was a time that I had to respond to a good friend of mine and it was really hard. It was the only time I felt that I didn’t want to do what I was doing.” “It’s common,” Brandon added. “We’ve had a few guys quit especially when it comes to fatalities with children. You really just hope it doesn’t happen.” What frustrated them both were the “misconceptions” many people have with firefighters in general. Many seem to think that firefighters just hang out in the firehouse. “It takes a lot of work,” Gomes said. “People think sometimes it’s a county job, you get to take naps, you get to play basketball and it’s a lot harder than that.” “It takes a lot of dedication,” Brandon said. “You have to really want to do it. We are both the type of women that don’t give up. We never would have made it otherwise. It’s really been a great experience.” Fire, with its mesmerizing colors and dangers, has always intrigued me. I was curious as to whether Brandon and Gomes were also lured by it. Gomes beamed shamelessly, agreeing that she loved getting as close as she could to the fire. “Yeah, you definitely can’t be afraid of it,” Brandon said. “I love the power of fire, it’s so unpredictable,” Gomes told me. “I love watching the state of it change from roaring in the wind to the mellowness of the kindling. Sometimes they’re so beautiful I just have to look at it for a little bit.” MTW

Amore in Red Sauce Five excuses to get your love-thang on at Serpico’s Food is lovely. Food never screws me over, stands me up, monitors my spending or tells me to get a real job. I love food and food loves me. So it’s totally natural that I would spend a lot of time exploring random culinary delights—hey, I never said that I was a monogamous eater. Monogamy, especially when it comes to tasty delectable meals, is highly overrated. Or so I thought… until that fateful day, starving and lovelorn, when I stumbled into Serpico’s Pizzeria and Restaurant—the Italian Stallion of Maui restaurants.

Serpico’s 7 Aewa Pl., Pukalani, 572-8498. Open seven days a week, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. $

Ah, Serpico’s. Oh Captain of my quivering taste buds, how I love thee! Let me count the ways:

PHOTOS: BILL GEOGHEGAN

Uno You are conveniently located in Upcountry Maui. You shine like a beacon, mocking my hopeless other suitors like McDonald’s, Subway and KFC. They can’t hold a light to you as you wait patiently for my presence. Not to mention, you give great parking. I love the parking, baby. So on the spot, so right there. Due You give me options. I love options. Some days I feel like a big slice of pizza, some days I feel a little more on the Fettucine Alfredo side, other times I’m all for stuffing my mouth full of a thick

and juicy Philly Cheesesteak. Monotony? No, not at Serpico’s. Pizza Hut eat your heart out... No Meatball Parmigiana or Baked Ziti on your menu. I’m afraid that we can never go back to how we were. Tre You’re fresh, darling! As fresh as they come. Daily deliveries keep you clean, crisp and tasty. There’s nothing worse than that not-so-fresh feeling. We’ve all been there. It’s even worse when the not-so-fresh feeling is happening to your food. I love that I never have to worry about those icky moments with you. Quattro You keep it real. Authentic. Italian. Everything is made from scratch, from the rich and tangy olive oil-drenched marinara and zippy pizza sauce to the smooth and satisfying Caesar dressing. Pity the fool who sticks with the $3 Costco Caesar. Cinque You’ve got roots. You’ve got a successful brother out in Allenhurst, New Jersey with the same name. Twins? Hmm… You don’t say! Serpico’s opened in June 2006. They don’t sell liquor, but you can bring your own wine or beer. Owner Hatch Clarke actually moved his “main guy” (manager—how Jersey is that?) Dario Martinez out from Jersey to open the restaurant. You can meet him most days at the joint. He makes great pizza and looks good doing it. That was a blatant hint, ladies. Clarke has worked with Italian food all over New Jersey since he was 16. Not to give away his age or anything, but he’s been doing it for 30 years. And he’s a nice guy. No nonsense, good service, great food. He’s also got six kids and a stressedout wife who does yoga. God bless that woman. MTW

They’ve Got Balls Monday-Wednesday (Nov. 20-22) at the Lahaina Civic Center [BASKETBALL] It seems like just yesterday Connecticut narrowly defeated crowd favorite Gonzaga in the finals at the 2005 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational, which was arguably the most exciting tournament in the event’s 21-year history. To celebrate the arrival of the 2006 Invitational, we offer a look inside the numbers of college basketball’s most prestigious preseason event: 2,400—Seats at the Lahaina Civic Center, creating the intimate nature of the tournament (not to mention the scarcity of available tickets). 18—Combined NCAA titles won by 2006 invitees UCLA and Kentucky. 1—Former Invitational champions (Kentucky, 1993) competing this year. 12—Tournament games (the entire tournament, for the second straight year) being televised by ESPN. 4—2006 Invitational teams ranked in the preseason top 25: UCLA (6), Memphis (14), Kentucky (22), and Georgia Tech (23). 4,000—Annual out-of-state visitors attending the tournament (responsible for an estimated $12,000,000 annual contribution to Maui’s economy). 43—Points scored by Gonzaga’s Adam Morrison against Michigan State last year, a single-game tournament record. 7—2006 tournament games already sold out. For tickets to the remaining five, try online at www.mauiinvitational.com, or by calling (808)667-DUNK (3865) or stopping by the tournament’s on-site box office. [COREY NIELSEN]

Eight Roles, Two Actors Friday-Saturday (Nov.17-18), 7:30 p.m.; Sunday (Nov. 19), 5 p.m. at Iao Theater [STAGE] Charles Ludlum, founder of New York’s Ridiculous Theater Company, winner of many awards and original playwright of The Mystery Of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful, has also created a very tricky play—one with eight roles, but only two actors. The plot revolves around Lord Edgar and his second wife Lady Enid at their home, the Mandacrest Estate. Add in the house staff, mummies, vampires, werewolves and ghosts and you have yourself a full-blown adventure. It’ll be worth it just to see actors Tom Althouse and Alexander Cardinalli pull this off! Opening night (this Friday, Nov. 17) includes a full gourmet meal for an additional $20 and all proceeds to benefit MauiOnStage. The Mystery of Irma Vep runs weekends through Dec. 3. Fri-Sat: $18; Sun: $12. Tickets available at If the Shoe Fits, 12 N. Market St. in Wailuku, or online at www.mauionstage.com or by calling the box office at 242-6969. [HEIDI KING]

DAY

A Musician’s Musician Sunday (Nov. 19), 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater [FOLK/ROCK] Richard Thompson is a “musician’s musician.” Here’s why: Thompson started his career in 1967. As a teenager he was one of the founding members of the group Fairport Convention. The album Liege and Lief was recorded in 1969 by the group and is still regarded as the most influential folk records of all-time, according to the British public. The BBC awarded Thompson this year with their lifetime achievement award. Back in America in 2003, Rolling Stone gave Thompson the distinction of being the 19th (out of 100) guitarists of all time. Thompson has a song list that dates from present day to the 11th century, along with over 40 albums to his name. This would equate to an entire arsenal of songs that rival a musicologist’s entire library. Tickets are $30 in advance of $35 the day of the show. Call 242-SHOW for info or to purchase. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Best Superspy Yet James Bond begins anew All fears surrounding the future of cinema’s longest running franchise are put to rest with Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) more than capably filling 007’s shoes in a Bond film that shatters formula constraints and delivers nail-biting action in a considerably darker mode. Screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis adapt Ian Fleming’s inaugural 1953 James Bond novel with a more serious pitch that compliments their depiction of the author’s budding international spy as an arrogant if capable renegade with a sizable ego to match his muscled physique. A sumptuous animated red-andblack retro title sequence segues into a grainy black-and-white noir realization of Craig’s super-action Bond earning his Double O license to kill in Prague before the movie shifts into full color. With a $10 million dollar bankroll, Bond travels to Montenegro to play a high stakes game of poker opposite terrorism-financier Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) to deplete the over-leveraged villain whose impatient investors wait with loaded guns and baited breath. This younger, meaner Bond exerts calm acrobatic athleticism while in Africa attempting to capture Mollaka (Sebastien Foucan), a potential suicide bomber, with the unnecessary aid of another secret agent incapable of concealing his radio transmissions about Mollaka’s location at a cobraand-mongoose competition. The perp flees and Bond gives hot chase through a high-rise construction site that serves as a gauntlet of mindbending obstacles for the two men to exhibit their skills while jumping long distances from rooftops, cranes and skeletal elevators.

Director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye) pushes the high-energy segment to establish Bond’s unprecedented physical discipline and encyclopedic knowledge that he uses to manipulate the site’s imposing machinery. To his chagrin, the chase ends badly in a bloody standoff with Nambutu Embassy guards, and Bond’s explosive miscalculation is soon posted on the Internet to the embarrassment of M16 and Bond’s boss M (played by Judi Dench in

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/144 mins.

Wow, that is a gun and you’re happy to see me. her fifth Bond film). We get a sense of 007’s slash-and-burn ambition when he breaks into M’s apartment to search her personal computer for information that will point him to terrorist-backer Le Chiffre. This loner incarnation doesn’t wait to be sent on a mission; he assigns his own objectives. But Craig’s laser-focused Bond is no mercenary. He has a much deeper itch to scratch—one that will only be enjoyed briefly and much later in the story when he believes he has achieved what’s revealed as a latent objective. An obvious break from the franchise’s signature formula comes in the form of anti-Bond girl Vesper Lynd (Eva Green— The Dreamers). Vesper appears midflight as a Treasury agent sent to approve and supply the millions of dollars in cash that Bond will bet with against Le Chiffre, a man who weeps blood due to a rare medical condition.

“I’m the money,” Vesper tells Bond. To which he replies, “Every penny of it.” It’s a moment that rings like a platinum bell in announcing the yin and yang tension between Bond and the ravishing woman who is his intellectual and sexual equal. Vesper goes on to read his personality just as precisely as he scans hers. The oddly romantic tete-a-tete provides some well-deserved humor spiced with a heavy dose of insight into the similarly isolated backgrounds of both characters. These are not the cardboard cutouts of previous Bond films, but rather genuinely intriguing people who communicate in a

shorthand code of mixed messages. Everything about Casino Royale is big without overreaching. Craig epitomizes the ethic with a fluid performance that fills every scene like mercury seeping into a grooved floor. He has a feline quickness and an innate understanding of Fleming’s character that would make the author proud. Most importantly, Craig’s Bond is a modern self-made man with a strong sense of immediacy who understands sacrifice, pain and pleasure. There is a new James Bond, and for once the comparison to Sean Connery’s heretofore-unrivaled interpretation is valid. Daniel Craig is better. MTW

Open Mic Nights

PHOTOS: MEGAN BAKER

Mondays, 7 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel; Mondays, 9 p.m. at Life’s a Beach; Tuesdays, 9:30 p.m. at Unisan; Wednesdays, 10:30 p.m. at Maui Brewing Co.

Recently, I spent an evening at Café Marc Aurel’s Open Mic and was shocked at how different it was from others I’d been to in Lahaina and Kihei. The event started with a poet reciting a few of his own. He was in the minority at this open mic. Most of the entertainment was music, and predominantly made by women. But the poetry fit like a glove on this occasion. Next was a flutist—this woman was having a great time doing her thing on stage. You could tell by the expression on her face that she lived for this. Then came a few different acoustic guitarplaying singers. When one of the performers started singing a folk ballad about road rage, I tuned out for a bit. Not everything is a gem at open mics and it’s all subjective to taste. My date and I instead talked about the different open mic nights we’ve been to and participated in. What made this one unique was the complete lack of electric guitar heroes. This was a welcome occurrence. As pointed out by Russ Reina, a.k.a. “Firetender,” the mood at the Café was nonjudgmental; the var-

Introducing the New Intern… Keith Benedict! And his Top Five (sometimes of all time) LED ZEPPELIN “LED ZEPPELIN I”

What it’s like at Open Mic Night It takes a special kind of courage to play an instrument and/or sing alone. This is unlike being able to hide behind a band or an obscenely loud guitar amplifier. Open Mic Night is a venue for musicians to play a few songs without having to put on a concert. It’s where lesser known musical newbies and veterans alike have a place to bare their souls to the public.

EAR SHOT

ious performers were very encouraging towards one another. I couldn’t agree more. This could explain why the audience was so unusually receptive to the artists—unusual, because this is not the case at other open mics. At some events, it’s a misplaced competition between the performers and the hosts—almost a subtle battle of the egos. Another complaint I have is listening to the same covers, especially when they’re butchered with half-buzzed arrogance. No wonder the audience at such open mics gets detached from the music. Once in a while you do get to hear something genuinely creative. When this happens I’m reminded of why I showed up in the first place. Open mics come and go, especially on the West Side. Eric’s Seafood offered one for a few years, and changed hosts more often than I could keep up. Dave Carroll took the helm shortly before the establishment went out of business. I liked the direction that particular Open Mic Night was going in that short time. As I remember, original artists would be allowed to play more songs than artists doing cover songs. To me original music should be the whole point. On busier nights, all the performers played with a time limit. On slower nights, the real hams and guitar shredders would go on and on. Back at Café Marc Aurel, Firetender began singing a reflective song about “sending our kids to war.” He said expressing these opinions was what motivated him to perform. “I have a chance to communicate with an audience that I wouldn’t otherwise get at open mic,” he said. As I finished my chocolate marquis and double espresso, a rasta belted out a reggae tune. He was out of key, but sincere. More customers were walking in looking for a table and I didn’t want to be a table hog anymore than I already had so I left. In 1970, Led Zeppelin started the term “heavy.” It was a year before I was born and a new era in rock began. The heavy aspect is mostly due to John Bonham’s powerhouse technical ability, and Jimmy Page’s unrelenting riffage. Another of Page’s contributions was the tone he crafted with his guitar, made primarily by employing a Gibson Les Paul guitar and a Marshall amplifier. It’s a tradition carried on by many esteemed guitarists today. The band did have a couple covers on the album; “I Can’t Quit You Babe” and “You Shook Me” were originally recorded by bluesman Willie Dixon. And Robert Plant is no old-time blues singer, at least traditionally speaking. But he hit octaves usually best sung by female vocalists, and thereby originated glam rock vocals. – Atlantic Records, 1969

FOO FIGHTERS “THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE” Dave Grohl uses Gibson guitars 95 percent of the time—further proof of their exquisite tonality. But who’d have thought the former drummer of a grunge band (Nirvana), would go on to write, play and sing such a timeless album. I must’ve listened to it at least a hundred times and I still appreciate its originality and the genuine substance of the music. The surprising part is that it’s loaded with pop hooks. Grohl is a songwriting genius but it’s my opinion Pat Smear had a lot to do with the style of this album. No other Foo release has had this caliber of creativity since. Sadly, Smear quit the band right after recording was finished. – RCA Records, 1997

THE STROKES “IS THIS IT?” The Strokes must be fans of Lou Reed. Being a fan of the man myself, it’s not a surprise I also like the band. While inheriting their sound from groups well before their day, The Strokes manage to make it their own—dirty yet stylish, retro/pop/punk, guitar driven, back-beat rock. One of the best aspects of the album is that you can hear every instrument without all the polish. The dynamics between the two guitars is understated and poignant for each song. No guitar heroes here. Julian Casablancas eloquently slithers his vocal phrases in a talk/sing style that would make his idol (Lou Reed) proud. – RCA Records, 2001

THE PIXIES “WAVE OF MUTILATION: BEST OF PIXIES” With 23 great songs in a row, it’s nice to press play and walk away—that is, if you’re still an iPodless cave person. Back in ‘86, Frank Black dropped out of college to make the band happen. Then Black convinced a friend, Joey Santiago to do the same. The two recruited bassist Kim Deal, and drummer Dave Loveing. The Pixies helped usher in an era of music that would save our ever-loving souls from the tasteless, ego-driven crap of mainstream ‘80s music. Basically, Black and the rest of the band laid the foundation for all that is good about music today. You would disagree? Well, there’s Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Kings of Leon, just to name a few. That’s right—now go listen to Best of Pixies. – 4ad Records, 2004

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE “SONGS FOR THE DEAF” This is rock in its purest form. Normally, repetitive guitar riffs bore me. However, with all the talent in this band, the repetition comes across like a freight train, pounding those blissful guitar tones into your skull. I’ve heard some complaints of the overly mid to low frequencies in the guitar parts. Personally, I love it. I think it has a lot to do with what makes this recording so powerful. Josh Homme’s and Mark Lanegan’s crooning vocal melodies, along with Nick Oliveri’s psychotic screaming, rounds it all out. Another interesting part about this album is the intros for most of the songs, sounding as if actual DJs—ranging from an underpaid sloth to an over-hyping spazz— are introducing the material. Anyway, it’s a conceptual touch that is aural icing on the cake. – Interscope Records, 2002

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Don’t wait for “the complete package.” It won’t fit in your mailbox. Instead, expect to receive your dream ____ (fill-in-the-blank: relationship, job, house, etc) to arrive in installments over the next several months. They probably won’t arrive in the order you’d expect or prefer. For instance, if it’s a relationship we’re putting together, the sex might come first, with soulful conversation and deep friendship not showing up for weeks or months—or vice versa. All you have to do is be patient and wait.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You of all people should know how suddenly and completely things can change. What seems on Wednesday a hopelessly intractable situation can flip on Friday, becoming a scenario where your prospects are actually bright. Of course, the reverse is also possible, in which a stellar future becomes a grim one overnight. You can, of course, adapt to whatever your new circumstances are—as long as you’re not too busy congratulating or berating yourself for whatever’s happened.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The camera can lie. A trick of lighting or perspective can make you look more beautiful or hideous than usual. If an impersonal machine can be fooled by an angle or a splash of backlighting, what makes you think a human being—who’s toting baggage and wearing dozens of lenses (perhaps without even being aware of it)—can be at all objective? Instead of taking personally someone’s misperceptions about you, try to remember (or guess at) where they’re coming from. Then, and only then, you’ll be able to gently disabuse them of their misguided notions and find some common ground.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

WEBSITE

www.mauitime.com

I’m sensitive to caffeine. So I give my body breaks—a few months drinking coffee, a few months off. You, too, can choose what poisons to put in your body, and how much, and how often. Don’t act as if you have no choice. You’ve been a bit of a victim of your cravings (both physical and emotional) when we’d all prefer you take control. Finding a way to manage them (perhaps by eliminating them entirely, or perhaps by creating a sort of balance, as I have with coffee) is this week’s most important task.

MAILING

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

33 N. Market St. Ste. 201 Wailuku, HI 96793

DROP OFF

33 N. Market St. Ste. 201, Wailuku

Show me a Pisces who enjoys being rushed or hurried, and I’ll show you someone whose birth certificate’s got a typo—she must actually be a Virgo or an Aries. Unfortunately, you’re sometimes subject to schedules and itineraries that aren’t at the pace you’d prefer; this week is, regrettably, chock full of rushing, deadlines and anxious bosses, dates and friends who are likely to dig the spurs in a bit too often. Do your best. If you’re able to speed yourself up with grace, you’ll have a good chance—in a few weeks—of getting those harrying you to finally slow down.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re teetering on the edge of control freakhood. I know you’re just trying to be careful and protect yourself, but your diligence and vigilance is about to backfire. No one likes being kept on a short leash, and you’re about to hear about it unless you release your death grip, right now. The opposite extreme— turning a blind, faithful eye to everything that might be going on—would be just as bad; seek, instead, a middle path balancing caution, freedom and trust. It may be hard to let go and give the one(s) you love some breathing room, but you’ll find that once you do, you’ll be able to breathe easier, too.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Telling the truth takes courage. I’m depressed and astonished when people are gutless. Even when they know it’s the right thing to do, that it’s actually kinder in the long run, they shy away from saying something that’s hard or negative. I prefer the truth, even when it’s harsh. I’ve never regretted being fully honest with someone, even if it was difficult or painful at the time. I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that yanking the Band-Aid off was better than slowly removing it; that I, by being brutally honest, had actually spared them more heartache and pain. Think about that this week, and be truly, radically honest—now and always.

NOW HIRING NEWSPAPER DRIVERS • Reliable Vehicle • Valid Drivers License and Insurance Required • For more info call 808-283-0512

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Don’t be passive this week. You’re sometimes awfully good at passing the buck and putting the onus on other people to take action—then you’re disappointed when they don’t. Like it or not, the first move is yours. You want something from someone—you’ve got to step up and ask for it. Sure, there’ll be rejections and failures if you take risks like that, and they may crush you—if you’re made of paper. Personally, I think you can take it. It’s an easy equation: If you don’t make the first move, I guarantee nothing will happen. If you give it a go, you might fail, sure—but you might succeed. And with each attempt, you’ll get better, and succeed that much more often.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Cancers are first-class procrastinators. Unfortunately, the more you procrastinate, the more you procrastinate. As your To-Do list gets longer and longer, it also gets more daunting. You become more reluctant to begin it. Yours is already too long, isn’t it? That’s why you’re hiding out reading horoscopes instead of getting shit done. Tear that thing in half. Choose the half that’s easier and tackle that. Screw the rest, for now. That stuff will just have to sort itself out. Well, what are you waiting for? You’ve still go half a To-Do list to get to, and it’s not going to get any shorter.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Let’s face it, Leo. You’re not an especially organized person. Oh, I’ll admit you’re better than you used to be, but compared to your average Virgo or Capricorn, you’re a total slob. You shouldn’t, however, let anyone judge you for it. Your goal this week isn’t to glean the approval of those more tidy (or anal) than yourself. It’s to figure out the environment that will maximize your creativity (which is much more important than an orderly sock drawer) and generate that. If it turns out total chaos will make you flourish, then you have a responsibility to yourself to provide it, and screw anyone who disapproves.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’ve been driving for weeks or months with the emergency brake on. You’ve known, all along, that something didn’t feel right; the car was acting weird, but you couldn’t figure out what it was. This week you’ll get a clue and remember to release the damn thing. Get ready to experience that lovely feeling of liberation and release when suddenly the vehicle steers, accelerates and stops exactly as it’s supposed to. Gone (for now) are the days in which you simply grimly try to get to where you’re going as quickly as possible. Now you can take the scenic route, and enjoy the journey, besides.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) More and more studies are implying that calorie deprivation may extend lifespan. Eat less (while maintaining nutrition) and you just might add years to your life. This is the kind of equation that’s pleasing to Libras. Take one thing off one side of the scale, and get some kind of payback on the other. However, what about those sacrifices whose payoff isn’t a sure thing? What good does it do you to be kind to some stranger, for example? This week is full of uncertain formulas, where your actions have unknowable consequences. In those cases, you can’t be guided by self-interest. However, don’t despair; it’s still quite simple: Do what’s right, whether it’ll obviously help you or not.

Which MTW Staffer Are You? The last time you got drunk… a) You were premenstrual, kidnapped by a girlfriend and taken to a bar for Buttery Nipples and Oyster Shooters, then to a couple more bars, then to a crazy party at a million-dollar home to drink beers possibly laced with acid. b) You went to a show at a club, danced too close with your roommate, flirted with older men, then later went home and drank several champagne flutes of red wine with homemade wheat thin nachos. c) It was last month and you went to a Japanese restaurant with friends and drank Chambord. d) It was sometime in 2004 and you were celebrating a night off work. e) It was last year and two of your friends cooked a big Thanksgiving feast, then you all played drinking games with beer, vodka and this really syrupy dessert wine, ultimately ending the evening by lying on the floor moaning a lot. f) You were at home and fell asleep. g) It was six months ago and you and some friends decided to taste various liquors at a bar at last call. h) You asked your friends the next day to tell you what happened so you could write about it.
