When he read in the Washington Post that the CIA is holding an unknown number of terror suspects in secret prisons throughout Eastern Europe, Republican U.S. Majority Leader Bill Frist… a) Said that he wasn’t concerned “about what goes on” in the prisons but thought the unnamed CIA sources for the story were a far greater threat to national security. b) Said he was outraged that the U.S. would stoop to using former Soviet gulag prisons and would immediately hold hearings to find out how this could happen. c) Said he never believes anything he reads in the Washington Post. 3. I guess if you don’t care about that, you probably also don’t care that you were driving without a license plate. DLNR Officers Awo and DeCambra looking over some of the damage Six thousand, four hundred feet up the western slope of Haleakala is the stateowned Kula Forest Reserve. There fog blankets the conifers and native trees, mist kisses your skin and silence slows your mind while serenity embraces your spirit. That is, until the growling of ATVs and dirt bike engines rip through the forest and whatever peace of mind you’ve achieved. Annoying? Yes. Illegal? Absolutely, though that doesn’t seem to stop people from tearing apart the landscape. On Nov. 4, 2005, Randy DeCambra, an officer with the state’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), went on a little expedition through the reserve. With him were fellow Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) officers like Maui Branch Chief Randy Awo, East Maui Supervisor Dexter Tom and enforcement officer Brooks Tamaye. Their job was to assess the deep scarring of the forest caused by the increasing illegal dirt bike runs through the area. “This is really disturbing,” said Awo as he examined the trampled native shrubs and freshly cut tire tracks. Overwhelmed by the extent of the damage, the DOCARE officers were speechless as they looked at the tire ruts scarring the face of Kanahau summit. Back in May, personnel from the state’s Division of Forestry and Division of State Parks installed barriers at the lower Skyline trail gate at Kanahau to prevent

off-road vehicles from getting in. They’re clearly not working. “I’ve seen enough,” said Awo, finally breaking the silence. “This must be stopped.” A mountain man at heart, DeCambra spends part of his time in the Kula Forest Reserve as a civilian hunter and hiker. When staffing allows, he also patrols as a DOCARE enforcement officer. “The ATV and dirt bike activity up here is out of control,” DeCambra told me. “This careless destruction is causing erosion, disturbing the native bird populations, bringing in invasive species and hampering the ability of native Koa, Sandalwood and Ohia trees to successfully reestablish throughout the reserve… Maui lacks an off-road trail system for these thrill seekers so they come up here cutting up the mountainside and carving out new tracks.” It’s pretty clear that DOCARE enforcement officers are spread thin. They say it’s because of state budget cuts. They also say limited manpower makes it difficult to protect Maui’s natural resources from what they call selfish and irresponsible off-road motor-bikers who are enjoying a free-for-all at the expense of other uses. In theory, hikers, mountain-bikers, nature enthusiasts and hunters enjoy the Kula Forest Reserve. Awo says his department has been receiving complaints from hunters and other recreational users alerting them to illegal dirt bike activity. Hikers don’t like the bikes’ high-pitched motors, which disturbs the peace and quiet. With the opening of 2005-2006 game bird

hunting season on Nov. 5, enforcement officers are now expecting complaints from hunters. Until Jan. 16 of next year, bird hunters are allowed to hunt weekends and holidays, which are prime times for dirt-bike warriors. Right now, Awo is working with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in trying to find a way to curb the damage caused by the off-roaders. One action they’re considering is a temporary closure of the area. “Although highly unpopular, a closure of the Kula Forest Reserve will bring those with vested interest in preserving the area to the table to start discussions,” said Awo. “Through constructive discussion, we can raise the awareness and apply pressure to get these illegal off-road riders to stop. We need to come up with a strategic plan to deter these illegal activities and yet, not curtail the enjoyment entitled to the legal area users.” Until that happens—if that happens—they’re stuck trying to enforce the current laws, which mandate a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and up to 30 days in jail to anyone caught off-roading through the reserve. Even worse, enforcement officers can confiscate the vehicles used in these violations. MTW

Last year the Maui County Department of Liquor Control zealously went after bars and restaurants that got caught in minor decoy sting operations. This year, they’re really pushing over-service—serving booze to a customer who’s already drunk. Koho Bar and Grill in Kahului—which apparently never had a problem with the LC before—was the latest to get heat from the LC’s Board of Adjudication. On Dec. 23, 2004, after drinking at least four bottles of Coors Light at Koho, a guy named Carl Ayaya got into a car accident. After being arrested for driving under the influence, he told officers he’d gotten drunk at Koho. At the board’s Nov. 3, 2005 hearing, Koho pleaded no contest, saying they unquestionably served Ayaya more drinks than they should have. But they also cast doubt on the LC’s whole over-service policy. “We’re guilty of serving him four to five beers,” general partner Roy Dunn told the board. “But we didn’t get him drunk.” The licensee’s responsibility is to throw out visible drunks, Koho attorney Richard Rost told the board. But he also insisted that Ayaya “wasn’t visible” as a drunk to Koho’s staff. Had he been, Dunn said they never would have served him. That’s a huge problem for the licensee. Dunn insisted that he trains his employees not to serve any alcohol to anyone who exhibits signs of drunkenness, but he also said they’re powerless when confronted with someone who doesn’t show any outward signs of intoxication. The board didn’t seem to be listening. Board Member M.D. Alborano chastised Dunn, saying Ayaya “should have been cut off.” Dunn agreed—what else was he going to say?—but reiterated his point, saying his bartender had been with him for 10 years and was very good about watching customers. In the end, serving Ayaya cost Koho $2,000, though the board—at Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin’s request— suspended half that amount if Koho can keep from overserving another customer for a year.

Woe is us—we’re an institute of higher learning, not a secret defense lab tasked to come up with new weapons and sensors. Hey, it’s the 21st century! Everyone’s now part of the military-industrial complex! Even your local pre-school! Okay, maybe not your local preschool. But come on! War is the new Peace—it’s breaking out all over! And yet still UH complains. In today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin, they’re bitching about this new report commissioned by the Faculty Senate that raises all these questions about the Navy’s proposed contract with the university for a special University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). How does UARC research get published? Or does it? What can the school do with equipment the UARC purchases? What about intellectual property rights? Does the research staff need top secret security clearances? What about conflicts of interest if faculty does UARC and non-UARC work? Drug tests for everyone? Okay, okay, I get it: the Navy’s proposed contract has a lot of problems. Boo-frickin’-hoo. Do you guys want to make the Navy cry by asking for a rewrite? Do you want to make Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld cry? You know, he’s a feeble old man who cries like a little girl when he doesn’t get his way, be it torturing terror suspects in secret prisons or getting universityaffiliated research contracts. I don’t particularly want to see that, and I don’t think UH wants to either.

Harry Eagar can’t even get a simple blowjob story about genetically modified food right. “Thank you very much for your story ‘Seeds a growth industry in isles,’ published Nov. 4,” Monsanto Hawai’i site manager Paul Koehler wrote in a letter to The Maui News today, before proceeding to “clarify two aspects of the article in order to avoid misunderstanding.” First, Koehler wrote that Monsanto really does worry about its genetically engineered pollen floating around the island and contaminating other crops (Eagar’s story seemed to suggest that such occurrences were just the rantings of “GMO alarmists”). And second, Koehler pointed out that Eagar incorrectly translated the industry acronym “BT” as standing for “biotechnology,” when in fact he should have written it as “Bt,” which is shorthand for Bacillus thuringiensis, a special Monsanto crop spliced with bacterium DNA to protect it from certain insects. Keep giving ‘em hell, Harry!

According to an Associated Press story yesterday, Gowadia’s family wants copies of his security clearance, which supposedly shows that he was cleared to sell his infrared-suppression engine technological expertise to three—or is it eight?—countries that no one seems in any hurry to name. In a statement Gowadia’s lawyers distributed to the media, the guy’s family said, “Professor Gowadia’s family”—isn’t it cute how they referred to themselves in the third person?—“trusts that the correct facts will come out and that this misunderstanding will be cleared up in the days and weeks to come.”

Nice to see the war between Wackenhut security guards and Pacific Wings employees at Kahului Airport is still raging. KHON-2 News ran footage this morning of Wackenhut guard Eric Brown going off on a Pacific Wings employee, hitting him and threatening him repeatedly. Police later arrested Brown, 49, and charged him with second-degree terroristic threatening. This latest skirmish comes barely three weeks after another Wackenhut guard allegedly attacked Pacific Wings president Greg Kahlstorf at the airport manager’s officer. Entertaining as all this is, aren’t private security firms supposed to going after the guys making terroristic threats and such?

would be Young Brothers, the cargo carrier that has long dominated access to Pier 2. In fact, Monson wrote that unless big changes are made, the Superferry “will cause chaos” on the pier. After carefully analyzing the Superferry’s preliminary draft plans for the harbor, Monson discovered that a proposed two- or three-lane road “will force Young Brothers to relocate its icehouse and the necessary electrical outlets.” Oh my God—the entire icehouse? How will Young Brothers cope? What’s worse is that congestion on the docks when the Superferry arrives will be so great that “it could make for a dangerous mix of people and forklifts.” You know, determining whether the Superferry could vastly increase invasive species contamination on Maui was one thing—a dead issue now that two courts have ruled Superferry, Inc. doesn’t have to do an environmental impact statement—but putting people into close proximity with forklifts is going too far!

Actor Robert Blake, testifying in October at the wrongful-death trial against him brought by the family of his ex-wife Bonnie Lee Bakley, said the reason why he had traces of gunshot residue on his hand after the murder was because he regularly plays with cap guns, according to a report in the New York Post. “Without sounding like I’m pretty weird, I missed my childhood. [F]or me, [toy soldiers and] cap guns bring it all back. If [that] makes me nuts, then label me.”

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Neelesh Phadnis, 24, acting as his own lawyer, earned himself a conviction in Seattle in October for killing his parents, in large part (according to a Seattle Times story) because of his defense that the crimes were committed by, first, a gang of 400-pound Samoans, later augmented during his testimony to include their girlfriends, two whites, two blacks, a Native American and a transsexual, and later still, to be described as more than 30 armed Samoans. They were all slow runners, too, for Phadnis said he outran them all to escape, despite being seriously wounded. When he finally summoned the police, he told the arriving officers that he was too tired and hungry to talk about his parents’ bodies and that they should “go home.”

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Nov. 2, 2005 press release on replacing state Representative Galen Fox (R, 23rd District), who was recently convicted of a misdemeanor sex offense: “This process is designed to be inclusive and transparent, with the goal of selecting the best individual to represent the people of the district.”

What she didn’t say: The last time Lingle tried to replace a state representative she put “Democrat” Bev Harbin in Ken Hiraki’s old 28th District seat. After the Honolulu papers started reporting about Harbin’s past convictions for passing bad checks and unpaid state income tax debts, Lingle had to get on one knee and ask her to resign. Instead, Harbin started ripping Lingle, telling the Honolulu Advertiser on Nov. 8, 2005 that she’s running again next year—as the Democrat’s “worst nightmare. Chicago lawyer Stephen Diamond has filed about 100 lawsuits since 2002 against companies for failing to charge him sales tax on items he bought, earning himself about $500,000 in settlements and judgments, according to an October Wall Street Journal report. KISSING DISEASE Park Hyatt hotel maid Louise Kelsey, 58, testified in August in Melbourne, Australia, that she was kissed against her will in 2001 by a hotel guest (an Uruguayan soccer player in town for a World Cup match) and suffered a post-traumatic stress disorder that led to her being declared legally blind in 2002. Though a doctor for the defense derided it as “the most powerful kiss in history,” the hotel’s insurer agreed to its liability in October and said it would negotiate the money amount.

CREME DE LA WEIRD Animal control officers raided a house in Torrance, Calif., in October on reports that birds were being improperly kept there and ultimately found about 300, of which about 120 were dead. Gerard Enright, 61, was arrested when police caught him in the act of performing a tumorectomy on his No. 1 pigeon, Twister, that he had sedated with vodka. Enright is not a surgeon but said he had watched his veterinarian closely enough to know what he was doing.

The Lance and Charlie Show Debating the morality of development at Seabury Hall Jencks. That they each got eight days to prepare answers to those questions was made obvious right off the bat. When asked the first question, “How do you control growth on Maui?” Jencks immediately stood and referred to his easel, which displayed a giant sheet of notes labeled “Controlling Growth on Maui.” After a 15-minute recess following the Philosophy Club questions, seven questions from the audience were picked at random and given to both participants. People asked questions concerning the homeless people camped out on the breakwater in Kahului, how building permits could be easier to get and where all these new planned developments were going to get water. But the high point was at the end—a lightening round in which Holter and Jencks each had seven minutes to ask seven questions of the other. This was real debating—Holter eating up

Charlie Jencks took a deep breath and started pacing around. “There’s plenty of water on Maui,” he said, his voice beginning to rise. He repeated the statement a few times. He was almost agitated as he spoke of the county Department of Water Supply’s “responsibility” to find and secure water for big developments. As the developer seeking to put another 1,400 homes and 18-hole golf course into Wailea paced around a large set of presentation notes clipped to an easel, realtor and slow-growth advocate Lance Holter sat quietly, watching him. When Jencks was finally through and sat down, Holter began talking of how luxurious South Maui homes need 2,000 gallons of water every day, and how much of that water goes toward frills like watering lawns.

“THE COUNTY WILL NEED 25 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER EVERY DAY WHEN IT REACHES BUILD-OUT,” HOLTER SAID. “The county will need 25 million gallons of water every day when it reaches build-out,” Holter said. “I don’t believe we have that.” As many of the 50 or so audience members applauded, Jencks just looked on. So went the Nov. 9, 2005 debate “The Morality of Development.” Held at Seabury Hall in Makawao and sponsored by the school’s Philosophy Club, the debate matched Jencks, the current president of the Maui Contractors Association and former Maui County public works director against Holter, a Hawai’i Sierra Club activist, perennial local candidate and former Peace Corps volunteer. Polite and well organized, about the only problems with the debate stemmed from it being too polite and well organized. It opened with five questions submitted by the Philosophy Club to both Holter and

half his allotted time asking a rambling question about Jenck’s proposed Wailea 670 project, followed by Jencks equally long-winded questioning about where Holter was going to put the multitudes of people moving to Maui. This was true debating—not a nice exchange of ideas, but real criticism and argument. Instead of rushing through it right at the end— neither participant ended up asking seven questions—the participant interrogations should have dominated the debate itself. Instead of hearing Jencks talk platitudes like “You have to carefully balance the high end with the low end” or Holter insisting that “Market forces will destroy us,” the mostly high school audience would have gotten a back and forth, bruising and exhausting treat where gazes narrow and brows furrow. Given the stakes—dwindling land combined with rapidly increasing population—ratcheting up the terms of debate can’t hurt. MTW

ublic ridicule of the plan to exempt the Maui County Council from the state’s Sunshine Law requiring open government was swift and brutal. “What the council chair and associates are proposing is to move us toward efficiency at the expense of the community’s right to know and ability to speak out,” he wrote in a Nov. 2, 2005 Maui News editorial. “In exchange for firm law, they are suggesting that we simply trust them.” It’s interesting but by no means unusual that the author of the above op-ed, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa, is a Republican. Open government is one of those truisms that most American officials hold dear. But the council chairman who earned Arakawa’s scorn—the one who tried to hide himself and his colleagues from the public by rationalizing that “the Sunshine Law detracts from the effectiveness of county councils in carrying out their legislative responsibilities”—is Riki Hokama, a Democrat. Think about that a moment. Democrats—big “D” and little “d”— believe in democracy, which is, as Abraham Lincoln put it, government of the people, by the people and for the people. Yet here is Hokama, a member of the

Democratic Party of Hawai’i, making a clumsy effort to bar the people from the council chambers like they were strangers trying to get into his living room. At first I thought it was just the ramblings of a guy who’s been in power too long and got funny, inflated ideas about his importance. But then I recalled some of the other things local Democrats have been doing. For instance, soon after returning from a Middle East fact-finding trip, U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, 2nd District) announced that it was imperative that the U.S. “stay the course” in the war in Iraq. Then twice this year, first in March and then again earlier this month, U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye (D, Hawai’i) voted to approve oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). And Hokama, seeking to justify his bid to close access to the Maui County Council, pointed out that the State Legislature—dominated by Democrats since 1954—has long exempted itself from the Sunshine Law. Were these minor differences of opinion, that’s one thing, but open government, Alaskan oil drilling and the war in Iraq are high profile ideological issues for

Democrats. What’s more, every one of these actions explicitly violates a 2004 resolution passed by the Democratic Party of Hawai’i. “We have a lot of [party] resolutions,” said Maui County Democratic Party Chairman Ian Chan Hodges. “Almost every local elected official has gone against one or two or even a dozen. If you look at the party, Maui County and statewide, the party leadership is quite progressive. There is somewhat of a disconnect between the leadership and elected officials.” For a longtime Democratic activist like Dick Mayer, ideological times are tough. “I’m frustrated,” said Mayer, a Kula resident and activist who in 2004 collected and edited all the resolutions of the Maui County Democratic Party. “For whatever reason, there’s a lack of familiarity with the resolutions. Those are the expressions of large numbers of people who participate in the conventions. I would much rather see candidates take those resolutions and translate them into actions.” (See the accompanying “Total Resolution” to see what some of these resolutions say.) According to Ian Chan Hodges, party officials are beginning to focus on getting state legislative officials to put more emphasis on party resolutions and even turn some of them into bills. “The grass roots people put hours and hours and days and weeks into those resolutions,” said Shay Chan Hodges, Ian’s wife and Hawai’i Democratic Party Central Committee member. “That definitely needs to be respected.”

he question of what it means to be a Democrat in Hawai’i is nothing new to the party in general. Ever since 2000, when the inarticulate, antiintellectual son of President George H. W. Bush became President of the United States, the Democratic Party as a whole has been grasping at its identity. After all, President Bill Clinton had spent eight years co-opting Republican Party platform issues—welfare reform, free trade, balancing the budget—in an effort to “govern from the center.” Longtime core party issues like pacifism, environmentalism and aid for the urban poor went to the background or disappeared entirely. The feeling was that the country was veering to the right, and the Democrats needed to head there, too. Hence we have a very moderate Congressman like Ed Case very reasonably explain that his pro-war views come from having to represent his entire district, though how he came to feel that the majority of his district supports the war in Iraq is not so clear. Interestingly, both Akaka and Inouye couched their ANWRdrilling votes—which Case strongly opposed—in very progressive terms of

helping the local indigenous peoples, though a clear view of the actual ownership of Alaskan oil rights show a lot more indigenous peoples are going to get screwed over by drilling than made rich (see Maui Time’s “Akaka’s Eskimos,” Aug. 4, 2005 for more on this). The Democratic Party is still very much a “big tent” trying to group together all sorts of disparate interest groups and ideologies. For example, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D, Nevada) is pro-life, in contravention of the national party’s stated pro-abortion stance. Aren’t some ideological sacrifices necessary to gain the biggest support possible? Indeed, Case has been telling the public that the liberal wing of the Democratic Party has grown “intolerant” of alternate viewpoints, much like the Religious Right holds a stranglehold over the Republican Party. Indeed, a few years ago the Maui County Democrats talked of issuing “report cards”—ideological analyses of how elected officials of both parties were keeping up with the party’s platforms and resolutions. But they dropped the idea. “Do we want to embarrass people?” Shay Chan Hodges asked rhetorically. “We also have to support people.” Still, party leaders are starting to express their concerns to elected officials who seem to stray off the reservation. “We had a meeting with Ed Case,” said Shay Chan Hodges. “To Case’s credit he came. We expressed our concerns. He didn’t necessarily agree with us. He was honest with how he felt. I thought it was very good. A lot of people forgive Case on the social stuff because he’s so good on the environment. The Iraq thing is really frustrating, but with Case you have to look at the big picture.” It’s not an easy point to dismiss. Indeed, Ian Chan Hodges pointed out that such a meeting was all but unheard of for Republicans, who typically cherish “lock-step” votes over a free expression of ideas and interests. And for all the anger Akaka and Inouye stirred up over their pro-ANWR drilling votes, they often vote the liberal line on a host of other issues. “ANWR was sort of depressing,” said Shay Chan Hodges. “It’s terrible what they’re doing, no question, but Akaka votes very progressive on everything else.” But can that go too far? Can too much leniency lead to voter dissatisfaction and campaign losses? In fact, some suggest that part of the reason the Democrats lost so much power in the White House and Congress is because they aren’t “authentic”—they don’t stand for anything anymore. “What the Democrats don’t get is that while the American people are longing for authenticity, they come across as totally inauthentic,” longtime Democratic Party activist Norman Lear told Arianna Huffington in the November/December issue of Radar. “[B]ecause they try to represent what they think the American peo-

For instance, Senator John Kerry (D, Massachusetts) seemed to campaign for President in 2004 by both supporting and opposing the war in Iraq. But on a more basic level, progressives like Ralph Nader and Huffington point to the party’s addiction to corporate contributions as poisoning whatever proworker, pro-environment, pro-peace platforms the party once held dear (see the accompanying “Who’s at the Party” to see how little difference major Wall Street investment firms see between Democrats and Republicans). “There’s a need for funding to run campaigns, and the funds are all in the hands of big corporations,” said Mayer. “All Democrats running for office are thinking they need large amounts of money. Unions are diminishing in power. It’s what’s happening to the American political scene. And it’s getting much, much worse. The need to pay attention to people by both parties is diminishing.”

amassed such a tremendous war chest of contributions that most Democrats refuse to take her on. Indeed, Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D, 1st District) has all but said he’d rather stay in the U.S. House of Representatives—where he’s a powerless back-bencher—than run against her. As it stands now, her highest profile potential Democratic challenger is Republican Hawai’i Island County Mayor Harry Kim. “I’m a very grass roots populist,” said Shay Chan Hodges. “I think if you make more than $100,000 a year you shouldn’t be a Democrat. But ultimately it’s all about making money. It’s very difficult to participate in politics unless you have money behind you. [Ian and I] are the only people we know with children under 10 who go to the [party] meetings. But people with kids are most in touch with what’s going on.” Still, activists like Shay Chan Hodges remain optimistic. “I wouldn’t raise my children anywhere else but Hawai’i, and it has nothing to do with the beach,” she said. “This is a very progressive state. We have a huge opportunity to get back to our roots, back to the revolution of 1954 when the Democrats first took over. But it would be very good if [candidates] were very familiar with our resolutions. If you’re going to call yourself a Democrat, then you should be proud to be a Democrat.” MTW

Fresh Fish Story The Fish Market’s almost as good as the ocean I had been living in West Maui for several months when someone recommended I head to The Fish Market in Honokowai and scope out their selection of opakapaka, onaga, mahi mahi, marlin, ahi, ono and probably a few others. After staring at the selection for a moment, a friendly face behind the counter asked if I needed any help. Since I’m a lover of all seafood and the prices didn’t vary much between cuts ($16$20/pound), I asked for a recommendation. But that was just the beginning of the full treatment you receive when you shop at The Fish Market. Jason asked how I planned to prepare the fish. “Bake it,” I said. “Four hundred twenty degrees for 10 to 12 minutes and you’re golden,” he told me. “Do you need any seasonings?” I paused briefly to consider my spice cabinet, or lack thereof, then asked what they had

to offer. That’s when I discovered that depending on the fish and how you plan to cook it, there are a variety of marinades, butters and dry rubs available for $2.50 each. I decided on the macadamia nut crust and wine caper butter sauce. My gourmet meal came packaged in a takehome foil tray that I could pop right in the oven. There were even baskets of fresh upcountry veggies and fresh baked bread by the register which kept me from having to make an additional stop at the grocery store. While The Fish Market takes most of the work out of preparing a delicious seafood dinner, there are some who prefer to play no part in the preparation of their food. For those who appreciate great seafood but don’t want to get their hands dirty and smelling like an aquarium, The Fish Market also offers a great selection of carryout items prepared in-store. If you’re a poke fan, be sure to try the madeto-order poke with choice of ahi and/or tako and various fresh veggies, seasoned to your liking ($12/pound). Or if you prefer something warm there’s Seafood Chowder, Shrimp Gumbo and Lobster Bisque (16-ounce containers run $4.50-$6.99). While all three seem to be popular, the hearty Seafood Chowder will satisfy any marine life craving. Oh, and if you’re just stopping in for something to nibble on, grab one of the Oyster Shooters or mini-shrimp ceviche ($1 each) near the register. To be sure, there’s no getting around the fact that The Fish Market charges premium rates for their high quality food. But once you have the full Fish Market experience and taste how fresh and delicious the food is, you won’t want to get your seafood anyplace else. MTW

When they open the door the man says, “Nice tits. Now where should I put the blinds?” I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself. It’s my only Nun joke. Joaquin Phoenix Walks the Line Johnny Cash biopic does justice to the man in black For all of the obvious similarities between last year’s remarkable Ray Charles biopic Ray and this year’s enthralling rendering of the life of Johnny Cash, there is a glaring difference of approach between Jamie Foxx’s spot-on imitation of Charles and Joaquin Phoenix’s gutsy interpretation of the Man in Black. Joaquin’s trademark stiff shoulders morph into those of country music legend Johnny Cash even if Cash never carried himself with such defensiveness. Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon do their own singing through more songs than you can count, and are so thoroughly convincing as Johnny Cash and June Carter that your imagination speculates on hidden aspects of their histories together. Director James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted) does a phenomenal job of celebrating the life and hardships of one of country music’s greatest singers with a sincere and powerful movie. Mangold establishes the magical aura of Johnny Cash in the film’s opening sequence with a reenactment of Cash’s legendary performance inside Folsom

Prison. The poor acoustics in the jailhouse accentuate the booming volume of the band as they vamp onstage while waiting for Cash to appear. The bracing sound is authentic and sends the same shivers down your spine that the prisoner audience must’ve felt as they waited for their outlaw hero. The action shifts to a flashback of Cash’s days before his cherished older brother died, in an accident with a circular saw, that led his father Ray (Robert Patrick) to scream that the Devil took the wrong son. A tour of Air Force duty in Germany finds Johnny buying his first guitar and writing his first song after seeing a movie about Folsom Prison with his military peers. On his return to Arkansas, Cash marries his sweetheart Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin) against her family’s wishes before wandering into an audition for Sam Phillips at Sun Records where his original song “Folsom Prison Blues” delivers him from obscurity. Joaquin Phoenix owns the spirit of Johnny Cash for the duration of the well-edited film and expresses Cash’s tortured emotional needs that fueled his best songwriting. It’s a performance built from the inside out and, as such, carries a resonance as deep as Johnny Cash’s dark baritone voice. Johnny Cash lives on. MTW

(GP) DERAILED - (R) - Thriller - This is the classic story of married man meets sexy woman, and passion ignites. Then not only must he decide between the life he knows and a love he’s never dreamed of but he also has to deal with a violent criminal using the lovers in an evil plot. Now the two must put their priorities in order and try to save their families and their lives. Still, I hope they find the time to get a little adultery in. 110 min. (GP) DOOM - (R) - Sci-Fi, Thriller - Houston, we have a very big problem. Our research facility here on Mars has unknowingly opened up a door to hell and now nightmarish creatures are swarming the place killing everyone they come in contact with. Please send some hardened marines up here to close the portal and thus save the Earth... In fact, send Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—he’s our only hope. End transmission. 140 min. (GP) DREAMER - (PG) - Family, Drama - This right here

is your poor man’s Seabiscuit. Kurt Russell plays the great horseman whose best days seem behind him; Dakota Fanning is his wide-eyed daughter who ends up nursing a badly injured racehorse back to health. Don’t forget the tissues. (AP) ELIZABETHTOWN - (PG-13) - Romance - When fineass Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) gets canned from his hot-shot job in the big city, he feels like nothing will ever be good for him again. Then he finds out that his father has died and he has to return to his hometown to retrieve the remains. On the plane he meets an upbeat flight attendant named Claire (Kirsten Dunst). With her positive outlook and his need for reassurance, a beautiful bond is formed. 135 min. (GP) THE FOG - (PG-13) - Horror - You know, I’m kind of a sissy when it comes to getting scared easily, but fog has never been an issue. One of my exes wasn’t afraid of anything, except the fog. Weird, huh? Well, this feature takes place in Northern California, which can get very foggy when you’re on the coast. Apparently, there was a shipwreck 100 years prior, and now, in present day, the lost souls are coming back cloaked in the fog... for revenge. Who the hell is still alive that could’ve pissed them off? I don’t know. Normally, I scoff at horror flicks that only make the PG13 rating. But, in this case, I may just have to relish in the terror it hopefully inflicts upon my cheating ex. 100 min. (Heidi King) GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’ - (R) - Drama, Music Curtis Jackson—known to you and I as 50 Cent—plays a guy who decides to trade in the violent, evil world of drug dealing for a chance to enter the ironically more violent, more evil music world. Don’t worry ladies, he DOES take his shirt off. Though I haven’t seen a trailer for this one, I can already give it five stars with complete confidence. 134 min. (AP and HK) GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK - (PG) - Drama Slightly fictionalized retelling of how CBS News anchor Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) risked his career targeting blowhard Republican U.S. Senator (Joseph McCarthy, who’s positively brilliant as himself) for his grossly irresponsible and increasingly insane smearing of whole bunch of decent Americans as Communists. Directed by George Clooney, who also plays Murrow’s producer Fred Friendly. 90 min. (AP) INTO THE BLUE - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - When four hot young divers (including Jessica Alba and Paul Walker) discover a shipwreck containing millions in gold, they assume everything will be dandy. Hopefully the married life hasn’t dwindled the sexual tension between these two. That’s the best part. (GP) NORTH COUNTRY - (R) - Drama - When Josey’s (Charlize Theron) marriage fails she must return to her hometown to seek work. A single mother, the responsibility of feeding and caring for her two children turns Josey to the bleak work world of iron mining. Though the work conditions are tough, enduring the harassment from the male workers proves even more difficult. Also stars Sissy Spacek and Woody Harrelson. 130 min. (GP) PRIME - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy - Rafi (Uma Thurman) is a 37-year-old divorcee who’s seeing a therapist, Lisa (Meryl Streep). But then things get better when Rafi starts banging a 23-year-old hottie—for a while, that is, because that 23-year-old hottie is actually Lisa’s son! Oh my God! You see, this is one of those plots that makes for either a terrible mainstream movie or an award-winning porn flick, so please beware. 106 min. (AP) PROOF - (PG13) - Drama - Gwyneth Paltrow plays the daughter of an authentic mathematics genius (Anthony Hopkins) who was also a little funny in the head. When he dies, she’s forced to face the fact that not only can brilliance come at a terrible price, but that she’s very much her father’s daughter. Also stars Jake Gyllenhaal. 99 min.(AP) SAW 2 - (R) - Horror - I love a good mind screw. When I watch a thriller, I’m disappointed when I can figure out the ending before it plays out. So when a movie keeps me guessing until the end and then throws me a curveball, I am thoroughly impressed. The first Saw not only did that, it made me wet the bed. Really—my housemate doesn’t let me watch scary movies late night anymore. In the second Saw, the bad guy has eight people in a room—let the mutilation and mind games begin! And I’m going to buy plastic sheets. 93 min. (HK) WEATHER MAN - (R) - Drama, Comedy - Dave Spirtz is a popular Chicago area weatherman with a disastrous personal life who suddenly gets a chance to audition for a national morning show. Why am I not surprised that Nicholas Cage plays Spirtz? Look, Cage is a decent actor (Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Bringing Out the Dead) but he seriously needs a new agent (Guarding Tess, Con Air, National Treasure and now, apparently, this picture). 102 min.(AP) ZATHURA - (PG) - Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Kids - Think Jumanji, only instead of Robin Williams you have a house floating through outer space. Pretty routine stuff really: kids play board game, then said board game sends them on a wicked space adventure. No, really. I used to play Stratego—I can relate. Comic Book Art R. Kikuo Johnson debuts his graphic novella Comic books aren’t just for superheroes anymore. In fact, comic books—or graphic novels, as they’re sometimes called—are quite complex, artistically and editorially. Many contemporary graphic novels combine elements of film noir, drama, mystery, action, suspense and black comedy, looking more like sophisticated cinematic storyboards than the dime store entertainment of yore.

The thing I liked about Italy is how much it made me appreciate being an American. It was also 2001 so I think there was a definite patriotic energy in the air. I actually arrived in Rome on Sept. 11. I got off the plane and there were smoking towers on the TV. I guess travel is for self-discovery and I definitely felt more American than ever. Being in a foreign country is a great place to write a memoir. It just gets you thinking about where you came from.

Tell me about the process of creating a comic book.

R. Kikuo Johnson is one of the latest rising comic book artists of this genre. Born on Maui in 1981, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and moved to New York soon after. His debut comic book novella, Night Fisher, (Fantagraphics) is a depiction of a teenage boy struggling to find his place in the world and on Maui. Semiautobiographical, the art and storyline relay a more realistic side of Hawai’i not often represented in mainstream media. I talked to Johnson while he was in New York, preparing for his first solo exhibition and release party for Night Fisher. Maui Time Weekly: So what do call yourself? Illustrator? Graphic novelist? Artiste de comeec streep? R. Kikuo Johnson: I really like “cartoonist.” I think it’s the term that best describes the act of writing and drawing simultaneously. “Illustration” definitely has an implication of describing text with image, which I think is really different from actually writing with an image— using the image as the text, almost.

But what did you like best about it?

When did you start? I think the first comic I did was in third grade at Makawao Elementary School during recess. I did “Wind Man”—he has the power to control the wind. And he fought the Dark Destroyer. I think I made like 30 issues of that, actually. I kinda stopped making comics in high school. I would go out to my favorite pasture lands and stuff, and do these oil pastels and some oil painting—you know, in a kind of George Allen school of Maui painting. I was really pursuing that pretty heavily so I went to art school. By my sophomore year, I was a fullblown landscape painter. I had some stuff in Art Maui actually. That must’ve been 2001—yeah, I think I was 20 years old. I spent my junior year in Italy and my parents called me and said, “Your painting’s in the show.” They gave me a verbal description of the show so that was cool. And you were in Italy, too? I hate you.

With Night Fisher, I pretty much wrote out an entire plot and loose script, scene for scene. That was four years ago. I would start drawing it and as soon as pencil hits paper, it totally changes—the dialogue especially, even the scenes and the characters become their own people as soon as they’re drawn. A lot of time the gestures will say half the dialogue so you don’t need it. After this sort of loose script and plot comes together, there’s really kind of a definite simultaneous drawing/writing kind of thing that happens with these thumbnails that I did for the entire book. Even those thumbnails will change once you start inking it and getting it together. Otherwise it would just be awful, sitting and carving away at a drawing board for hours. From other cartoonists I talk to, it seems like a pretty typical method—lots of writing and drawing at the same time. Who was your mentor? David Mazzucchelli. He drew Batman for a while, among other things. I think the thing I learned most from David—beyond just learning a lot about technique and the language, the vernacular of cartooning—[is that] he was the first guy I ever met who took comic books seriously. He really pursued it with this fierce academic angle that was completely new to me. It was kinda how I always looked at comics and to see an adult say “comics” three times in a sentence was mind-blowing and really exciting. So is cartooning your main source of revenue? I work at a restaurant two days a week to pay most of my bills. It’s really nice ‘cause it allows me total freedom. I’ve been trying really, really hard to work out a situation for myself where I can just have no pressure but my own, as opposed to financial or editorial pressure, and it’s worked out really well for me. I try to avoid working with editors as much as possible. I’m sure you can relate. Uh, I have no idea what you mean. Do you have any advice for future cartoonists? Oh man, get a day job. If they just kinda trust themselves and keep trying, they’ll do very well. MTW
