LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR THIS ONE’S GLAD After reading the review of The Science of Sleep (“Arrested Development,” Nov. 9, 2006), I thought I’d skip it, as I want to avoid “self-indulgent” directors with obvious designs to take over the world. I ended up going and I must say I’m glad. Though many others were probably influenced to not see it (attendance was sparse at best), I’m pleased I didn’t follow their sheep-like ways. This film is a brave and original view of human consciousness and desire, frailty and courage, and the causes and effects that make us who we are. The protagonist is obviously flawed—even ill—yet to say he doesn’t want to grow up is one-dimensional. He couldn’t be other than he is—he has confused dreams and waking consciousness since the age of six. Just look at the world we live in—run by “adults”—and tell me with a straight face that we should “grow up.” Dreams belong to the inner self and no one can judge another’s. Of course, art is subjectively experienced, yet reviewers often go astray by the need to be distinctive (insert joke). To be open and in touch with your dreams and desires is what it is all about. Thanks. -J Shankar, via email

Gathering Place!” We are involved in this particular service business and have built our overall income on listening to the likes and dislikes and of the dos and don’ts of our patrons and we want to protect the civil rights of each individual. For someone to decide the rights of a person (responsible adult) is against the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. It’s not constitutional! We are well informed of the dangers of smoking and are all hard-working individuals who purchase cigarettes, which is declared legal in the United States. We also pay an exorbitant amount of the State tax for the privilege of smoking. Who cares about our “Civil Rights?” NO ONE!! The state makes money on our taxes, tobacco companies make money selling a legalized product here and abroad and on the other hand the business owner loses money because of the “SMOKING BAN.” So as a U.S. Citizen and Business Owner, WHO does the constitution want to care about? On Nov. 16, 2006 the “Smoking Ban” became law for the state of Hawai`i. Will I follow this law? Will others be given our Civil Rights as we deserve, or are we going to be treated as second and third class citizens? Yes, I am a bar owner. -Sam N. Kekaula, Kailua-Kona

Our Governor, Linda Lingle, signed Senate bill 3262 restricting all persons from smoking in all City, County, State and Federal buildings and additionally in all public buildings, Shopping Centers, Restaurants and Bars (Coconut Wireless, Nov. 2, 2006). No one should smoke in any of these places according to this new law. But what about the public that needs to enjoy the company of others, with a cocktail, to discuss and enter into conversations about our local, state and international news? Also politics and religion. To share birthday parties, receptions and do fund raising. To hold onto one another at wakes and most importantly to enjoy SPORTS. Going back hundreds of years this place was known as a saloon, bar, cocktail lounge, watering hole, 19th hole and by many other names. “The

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS Parsons is a $3 billion, employee-owned, California-based construction giant. They build stuff all over the world, including Iraq. In fact, a few weeks before Lingle’s campaign accepted the above check the Washington Post reported that U.S. investigators had discovered that a Parsons contract to build a $75 million police academy in Baghdad—the biggest in the war-torn nation— was a colossal failure. Mostly the problem was substandard plumbing, which leaked “urine and feces” throughout the building, undermining the structural integrity. “This is the most essential civil security project in the country—and it’s a failure,” special inspector general Stuart W. Bowen told the Post. “The Baghdad police academy is a disaster.” Parsons said the problems lay with Iraqi subcontractors, but agreed to tear down the academy at no further charge to the federal government. For his part, Bowen has vowed to audit every Parsons contract in Iraq.

ehbrah@mauitime.com To the woman I ran into in the Lahaina Cannery Mall earlier this month, I just have to question the little “service” dog you had with you. “It’s the kind that accompanies the handicapped,” you said. Perhaps the organization or agency responsible for “service” animals should explain to you there is a county leash law and it is inappropriate to allow your little “service” dog to run loose in a public place of business as you walk around window-shopping. Was the “service” he did on the tree in the middle of the mall walkway part of his training? Are you ignorant, stupid or just selfish? After listening to you, my guess is all three. Since you’re that handicapped, I suppose you were right all along.

Haiku residents recall Maui’s old railroad days

Hey kids: the Maui County Department of Liquor Control’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2006 is out! Seriously, this year’s edition— with a bright green cover—is full of fun and interesting facts about our LC. What’s more, when you place it next to the 2005 and 2004 reports (which sported red and yellow covers, respectively), a unique picture emerges—one of a department that is both swinging the fine-and-suspension hammer less on licensees while at the same time becoming far more aggressive in its investigations. In fiscal year 2006, the LC’s Board of Adjudication levied $40,150 in fines on liquor licensees for various infractions. This seems like a lot, but it pales before the 2005 figure of $149,800 (the year the Hyatt alone racked up $50,000 in fines on 25 separate counts of serving minors) and even 2004, which saw $64,700 in fines. Much of the reason for the lower fine figure is simply that there weren’t as many cases going before the Adjudication Board. In 2006, the department handed down just 62 complaint and accusation cases, compared with 106 in 2005 and 65 in 2004. storage unit. HLLP is currently seeking non-profit status as well as a location to permanently showcase their artifacts. Videos of railways stories like Sudo’s played while attendees ate chow mein, corn bread, fried rice and donuts. Being a fan of the History Channel, I thoroughly enjoyed this part of the morning, but I wanted to know more. Jacob Mau, who said he was one of the “Kalohe Boys,” confessed to being a rascal in the late 1940’s. In order to catch a free ride home from school Mau would sabotage the train track. “Hey, I just picked this up from the older kids at that time,” he joked. Mau and his partners in mischief would hear the train coming miles away, well before the steep incline of the track were the boys would board the train.

PUMP DON’T DUMP IN OUR OCEAN WATERS!

BOYCOT T SEAFOOD FROM CANADA!

Back in the 1940’s, when Mike Sudo was just six years old, he was “terrified of a wooden trellised monster.” The monster is the former Peahi gulch bridge, which was part of Maui’s old railroad network. Peahi Bridge spanned 330 feet and stood 133 feet high. Sudo had to cross the bridge to get to school. He would cry when approaching the bridge out of fear of walking across it. An older brother and classmates used to tease him while walking to school together. Luckily, Sudo says, he had the help of “an angel, and man, she was beautiful.” She was an 8th grader who ended up giving the young boy a piggyback ride across the bridge, while going to and from school. Gradually she persuaded Sudo to make the walk himself by holding his hand for a few yards each day while crossing the bridge. She then would put him on her back for the rest of the journey. This continued until Sudo had the confidence to face the “monster” himself. This is just one of the stories told at a recent Haiku Living Legend Legacy Project (HLLP) gathering at Haiku Elementary. The morning of Nov. 11 the group—which gathers and preserves Haiku history—had their quarterly get-together and Haiku’s railway history was the main topic. About two-dozen people showed up at the school. All were encouraged to bring artifacts, photos and especially stories of the railway. HLLP personnel then recorded the stories on video. HLLP already has a significant assortment of Haiku’s artifacts. Which is great, except that the climate in the area isn’t friendly to antique photographs. The old photos and such on hand showed considerable signs of wear due to Haiku’s humid and red dirt ridden landscape. But the organization has since moved the historic assortment to a climate-controlled

LC Watch

In order to slow the train, the kids would smash guavas onto the train track. To hide the evidence from the incoming train crew, the boys covered the guava with dirt. Upon hitting the guava, the driving wheels of the engine car would lose traction on the inclined section of track. As the train slowed the boys would sneak aboard. Of course, it didn’t take long for the train’s crew to catch on to what the kids were doing. But Mau said that just made it more fun for the little hoodlums, who would play hide and seek during the free ride on the rails. But he insists he’s “a good boy now.” MTW

Yet at the same time, the output from the LC’s enforcement division has just about exploded. In 2004, the department investigated 2,656 cases. That number climbed to 2,860 the next year. But this year, the Annual Report shows the LC conducted an amazing 3,623 investigations—nearly a thousand more than that of just two years before. The number of “special monthly checks” has risen dramatically as well. This year, there were 2,040 of those, up from 1,512 the year before and just 1,329 in 2004. The end result is a bit unsettling: this year saw fewer bar and restaurant owners having to explain alleged violations before the Board of Adjudication, but a huge increase in the number of bartenders, servers and managers questioned by LC investigators.

MAKENA DOOMED? For the second week in a row, Everett Dowling sits at the top of the heap. And why not? The Maui Planning Commission recently approved his ultra-luxurious 72-unit development right on Makena Beach. It won’t happen for at least another year or more, but in all likelihood Dowling will get to build five buildings—each up to 65 feet high—full of condos costing on average $3 million a piece. Though three commissioners did raise concerns about the project’s placement right on the beach in one of Maui’s more archaeologically sensitive locations, the rest of the panel gave it an enthusiastic thumbs-up. Except for giving a few public parking spaces in a paved lot, Dowling got virtually everything he wanted. In fact, he doesn’t even have to comply with the new workforce housing law overwhelmingly adopted by the Maui County Council— instead of paying inlieu fees of $1 million per unit for the project’s complete lack of affordable housing (the super-wealthy apparently get hives if working class people live within five miles of them), Dowling only has to pay $100,000 per unit. And that, my friends, is real power.

DISCONNECTED Sad news for all you bereaved, suffering Hawaiian Telcom customers out there: looks like relief might not get here until sometime late next year, according to the Nov. 16 Honolulu Advertiser. “There still remains a significant amount of work to be done,” CEO Michael Ruley said, according to the paper. “It will be several quarters before we think we can return to a more normal operating mode than the one we’re in today.” Return? The company hasn’t been “normal” since the well-heeled private equity firm Carlyle Group bought it back in early 2005. MTW

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

PHOTO: DOD/MICHELLE A. SOSA

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 15 It’s a rare day there’s no cruise ship docked in Kahului Harbor. I was shocked to see the docks empty as I drove to work this morning, but then I noticed one was just off shore, slowly steaming in. God knows what the passengers are doing in Kahului. Anyway, it seems the boats all belong to Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). There’s the Pride of Aloha, Pride of America and Pride of Extravagance. I kid, but not much—today’s Pacific Business News says the company made $49 million in profits during the third quarter alone. That’s $8 million more than NCL made in the third quarter of 2005. In terms of pure revenue, the company took in $592 million, which was nearly $100 million more than the same period last year. Hey, you think cruises are absurdly expensive for no reason?

THURSDAY, Nov. 16 So today’s Honolulu Advertiser tells us that four-star General John Abizaid—the top American commander in the war in Iraq, just testified before the U.S. Senate that Hawai`i’s own former army chief of

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

staff General Eric Shinseki was dead-on when he said publicly in the run-up before the war that the invasion and occupation of Iraq would require “several hundreds of thousands” of troops. This is beautiful, wonderful and absolutely irrelevant, mostly because the Pentagon slapped Shinseki down hard after his comments, calling them “wildly inaccurate” and went on with the war and resulting catastrophe as though Shinseki had never spoken a word. And during it all, where pray-tell was the brave, fearless General Abizaid as his thenboss Shinseki was getting berated for telling the truth? Why, he was standing off to the side with the rest of America’s brass hats, doing and saying absolutely nothing while Pentagon officials they knew were incompetent began sharpening their long knives. The irony—ain’t it grand?—is that Abizaid’s in charge now, and we’re losing the war to the tune of two American soldiers—who are conspicuously not generals—killed on average every single day since the war began. I don’t know which is better: the fact that Shinseki’s reputation is finally getting restored, or that Abizaid’s is going down the drain.

FRIDAY, Nov. 17 Tiny story in today’s Honolulu StarBulletin on Honolulu Magazine’s November issue article listing Historic Hawai`i Foundation’s top nine “Most Endangered Historic Sites in Hawai`i” (how’s that for sourcing?). And Maui County is well represented, with three sites! There’s the Pu`unene Congregational Church, which isn’t too bad off except that it’s siting exactly where Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar wants to build a new ethanol plant; the Mapulehu Glass House, a giant greenhouse on Molokai that dates to 1930 and is today a lot more house than glass; and the entire town of Lanai City. No, you read that right—all the oldest structures in Lanai City, which dates back to 1922, have either been torn down or are getting ready for the sledgehammer. There’s a move to register the entire town as an historic district, but there’s some worry that Castle & Cooke (which owns 98 percent of Lanai) won’t do it. “I really feel that [Castle & Cooke] doesn’t want to register it, because it’s going to cost them too much money, when they want to do something profitable,” Nani Watanabe said in the

Shinseki: still correct Honolulu article. She should know, too, since she’s Castle & Cooke’s culture resource manager.

SATURDAY, Nov. 18 So it looks like the Maui County Council is actually serious about slapping some real, actual, tangible, even possibly effective traffic impact fees on local land developers. But there it was in yesterday’s Maui News: a 9-0 council vote—first reading only, though—to levy a $8,442 per unit fee on every new home built in West Maui, $4,625 on every new South Maui residential unit (the Westside has much, Much, MUCH more timeshare construction than anywhere else on the island) and other, often considerable unit fees for office, industrial, hotel and retail construction. Could it be that the teeth-grinding, mindnumbing traffic we’ve all been increasingly trapped in could have finally passed a tipping point and prompted our elected officials to finally attack the problem at the source with a plan that will, if not actually slow new development, would at least raise some cash with which to combat the problem? Or is this yet another good idea that looks way better on paper than in execution, like the old plan to get developers to build affordable housing that saw far more promises than actual home construction?

SUNDAY, Nov. 19 Intrigued by today’s Honolulu StarBulletin story on the final election tallies, I decided to glance over the state Office of Election’s massive 736-page final precinct-by-precinct run-down on the

OVERHEARD... FIRST GUY: “Way to go, gentlemen. Your forefathers would be proud.” SECOND GUY: “Maybe you had four fathers—I only had one.” THIRD GUY: “I used to have foreskin, but they took it from me!” FIRST GUY: “Those bastards!” -Kula, Nov. 18

2006 General Election (and I mean “glance”). I couldn’t help but notice that Randy Iwase kicked ass in Maui County during his ultimately disastrous bid to unseat Governor Linda Lingle. Of course, by “kicking ass,” I really mean, “losing 47 out of 57 precincts.” Considering that Lingle completely destroyed Iwase statewide (61.7 percent to 34.9 percent), this is not too shabby. I mean, Iwase took such precincts as the Waikupu Community Center, Maui High, Maui Economic Opportunity Center, Haiku Community Center, Keanae Elementary as well as the absentee mail and walk-in votes for the Wailuku/Pu`unene/Makawao/Paia area. Overall, not a bad take for a guy all but abandoned by the state Democratic Party, which clearly was no slouch during this campaign—they did, after all, win both the U.S. Senate and House seats, as well as near-complete control over the whole state Legislature.

MONDAY, Nov. 20 At a time when more Americans than ever are conducting business in a cashless way using credit cards, ATMs and just plain begging, the U.S. Mint announces that it will introduce brand-new $1 dollar coins. Unlike former $1 dollar coins honoring Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea that are universally seen as the most evil things ever invented by humanity, these coins will honor U.S. Presidents. Each former president will get his own coin— including Nixon!—except for Grover Cleveland who, I kid you not, will get two non-consecutive coins in honor of his two non-consecutive terms. All this made no sense to me, until I remembered that the Mint is part of the federal government.

TUESDAY, Nov. 21 By the way, I’m still waiting for an answer to those questions I posed back on Saturday. Anthony Pignataro is still waiting in line for a PlayStation 2. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD AMERICAN HERO Citing a “code of honor” acquired during 26 years in the Air Force, retired pilot Ralph Paul, 54, decided in March that he would not pay for the $15.99 Shrimp and Scallop Verdura at Angellino’s restaurant in Palm Harbor, Fla., because it contained only five shrimp and five scallops. After he complained and walked out, the restaurant sent sheriff’s deputies after him. He was charged with misdemeanor fraud. Paul insisted to a St. Petersburg Times reporter that he couldn’t look himself in the mirror if he had paid, or even negotiated a settlement, so he hired a $500-an-hour New York lawyer. A jury acquitted him during a one-day trial in October.

THE PROBLEM IS GOATS A traffic officer in eastern Ontario, who ticketed a speeding motorist from Switzerland in September, said the driver blamed it on the lack of goats. He told the officer that he felt liberated to drive fast because, unlike in his country, there were no goats wandering onto the highway. And authorities in the Nigerian village of Isseluku arrested a man for killing his brother in September, but the man insisted that he had only tried to move a goat from his farm. When it wouldn’t move, he hit it with an ax, at which point it turned into his brother, according to an Associated Press report.

IF THE GLOVE FITS… Charles Henson was convicted of attempted murder in Bristol, England, in October, but insisted he couldn’t have done it. His ex-wife said he had stuffed his latex-gloved hand down her throat, knowing that she had a latex allergy that would be fatal within minutes. Henson said that was impossible

BY CHUCK SHEPHERD CHUCK@MAUITIME.COM

because, according to the couple’s “contract” setting out their sadomasochism, bondage and domination rules, “section four” states very clearly that “the master does not have a right to kill the slave.”

IRONY Anthony Mesa failed a drug test in September because, he said, he was medically unable to urinate into a cup under supervision, and he was remanded to a judge in Deland, Fla., to reconsider his house-arrest-only sentence. Mesa’s crime was that in August 2005, he spiked a Mountain Dew bottle at a grocery store with his own urine as a prank.

HELL OF A TOWN In a movement that grew from several women to more than 100 by mid-October, girlfriends in Pereira, Colombia, went on a sex-strike to urge their boyfriends away from the drug-gang life. Pereira is the same city where the sensational nightly TV soap opera “Sin Tetas (No Hay Paraiso)” originates. It’s the story of a flat-chested young woman who constantly schemes to raise money for breast-augmentation surgery, which she says is the only way to the good life.

CREME DE LA WEIRD Terence Michael Dean, 37, was arrested in September in Cool, Calif., after a homeowner arrived from a weekend away and found that Dean had commandeered his house and set up various confusing rituals. Dean (who ran from the house clothed only in a sheet) had turned on all faucets, placed packages of meat in the sink and bathtub, built a shrine of Buddha on a bongo drum, left a trail of potting soil from a walkway to the drum, left three plant stands in the garage holding teddy bears, unearthed about 100 houseplants in the yard, and left a cup of water containing a piece of paper reading “I love Cherry.” MTW

ere’s your chance to prove that it’s better to give than receive. And who’s better to give to than a non-profit charity and/or foundation? They need love, too. And money—lot’s of money. But mostly love. And you can show your love by getting them what they really need. So please look over our list and donate what you can. We’re not asking you to shell out a ton of dough here and some of the stuff these guys want is pretty cheap. Except for the forklift—we’ve never actually shopped for one, but we’re pretty sure they cost a lot.

Maui AIDS Foundation The Center for Disease Control reports that 25 percent of those in the U.S. who are HIV-positive don’t know it. Believing that prevention is their first defense against HIV, the Maui AIDS Foundation runs outreach groups that go to our beaches and bars to teach folks about how to reduce the risk of getting AIDS. MAF also provides free anonymous and confidential HIV testing. They’ve also formed the island’s only network for those living with the disease by providing free case management, transportation, health care, housing and food services. MAF is currently serving around 160 clients countywide.

Maui Economic Opportunity Youthbank

Paia Youth and Cultural Center The Paia Youth Center offers a variety of unique experiences to youth as well as an opportunity to broaden their horizons in understanding themselves and the people around them.Youths run the adjoining Paia Skate Park, Paia Bay Cafe and the center’s low power radio station KOPO 89.5 FM. Now on air, youth are able to learn media literacy, which will help them run the only youth-operated and programmed radio station in the state of Hawai’i.

Teaching youths life skills and experience isn’t easy. Many Maui parents have to work two or three jobs just to pay the rent—where does that leave time for the kids and life’s lessons? The Maui Economic Opportunity Youthbank program works hard with Maui youth in the classroom, out in the field and in counseling sessions to help youth form a real vision for their future. These are lessons kids might not learn elsewhere. They also offer courses in how to get along with each other, attitude, conflict resolution, nourishment and avoiding drugs and alcohol. They offer a variety of work that kids can tackle as a team, building their confidence and self-esteem (participating kids also get a stipend). The youth will gain survival skills and learn how to meet personal challenges through hikes and camping trips that are steeped in Hawaiian culture and history.

THEY NEED: • Cash for food-snacks and such because low-income teens arriving at MEO or the worksite are always hungry. • Cash for stipends: participants for work training qualify for stipends but with our present budget our stipend offerings are limited. Our youth would be much more encouraged if they could receive stipends for more of these events.

The combination of classroom type sessions, outdoor experiential activities and individual encouragement from Youthbank is the successful recipe for the development of their skills. By guided discussion and presentations from Maui business and agency resource persons, youth are invited to realize their potential and practice skills.Youth blossom and unfold through this combination of theoretical ideas, hands-on work and individual guidance.

ONO KINEGRINDS

BY JEN RUSSO JEN@MAUITIME.COM

Just Like Aunty’s House The hidden treasure of Tom’s Mini Mart The tiny wind-beaten neighborhood of Paukukalo sits between the ocean and the Wailuku Industrial Center. It’s a modest grouping of homes on the sea that boasts a really great corner store, Tom’s Mini Mart, which serves as both heartbeat and nurturer for the ’hood.

Tom’s Mini Mart 372 Waiehu Beach Rd., Pakukalo, 244-2323. $

Paukukalo is known for its surf. With lots of hungry surfers and working class families in the area, Tom’s really serves up the goods. While you

won’t find that missing ingredient for your cookies on their shelves, you will find every snack available and many mealtime essentials. Tom’s has a great hot food menu featuring two entrée specials Monday through Friday. These are offered plate lunch style for $6.50 with a scoop of rice, corn and macaroni salad. You can also order a hobo, a mini plate, for $4.50 or a combo for $7.50. If it’s a popular dish you can expect it to be sold out by as early as 11 a.m. that morning. Tom’s chicken katsu is some of the best on the island. Their inventive chicken char-siu is delicious, blending the red sweet honey-roasted style of preparation with juicy chicken meat. Their chopped steak plate is full of tender seasoned beef and plenty of sautéed onions. And their mac salad is good to the last drop of mayo. If you get there late and miss their daily special, don’t despair. Chili is their main standby; a bowl goes for just $2.50. They also have chilidogs for $2.5o, along with hot dogs, manapua and nachos. Their pre-made sandwiches are also great, joining fresh bakery bread with ham or turkey, lettuce, and cheese for only $3. Tom’s opens early and does a brisk business in the morning. Locals come in and pick up their coffee and lunches before they head to work. Surfers stop by for a

little pick-me-up before and after their morning sessions. But my favorite time to head over to Tom’s is after lunch. They have what I believe is the best shave ice on the island. When prepared correctly, shave ice can rival some of the fanciest desserts in flavor and texture. For $1.75 you can get a 16-ounce cup overflowing with powdery ice, topped with three flavors of syrup. You can also add their sweetened condensed cream topping for 75 cents, order it with two scoops of ice

cream under the ice for $1, or add azuki beans or ling hing mui sprinkles. Tom’s is more than a local corner store. They always put out their seasonal decorations and show their holiday spirit. They cook and serve meals with a lot of pride. That means a lot in a small and humble neighborhood. Going there is more like visiting your Aunty’s house to pick up some goodies and talk story than stopping by a convenience store. Oh, and they are closed on Sundays, ’cuz Aunty needs a break, too. MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Deporting Beatles Wednesday (Nov. 29), 5 & 7:30 p.m. at Castle Theater [FILM] What’s better than a well-done documentary exposing our government’s institutionalized warmongering, hypocrisy and covert operations? How about one that casts John Lennon as the besieged hero battling those evil forces! The U.S. Vs. John Lennon exposes President Richard Nixon’s attempt to deport the beloved ex-Beatle. Lennon was a celebrated pacifist and outspoken war protester whose voter-registration drives and anti-war rallies and concerts threatened Nixon’s reelection. Nixon responded by unleashing FBI director (and clandestine cross-dresser) J. Edgar Hoover—a direct link to today’s repressed homosexual politicos who pass anti-gay legislation between visits to man-whores and unsuspecting pubescent assistants—to hassle and spy on Lennon. The movie features an impressive soundtrack of Lennon’s songs, which will also be showcased live by DJ GED before and after the screenings. Lennon died on Dec. 8, 1980—the year I turned four—and I still can’t think about what the world lost that day without crying. People need to see this movie to remember what he stood for, and to be inspired to take action of their own. Lennon may be gone, but unfortunately the Nixons and Hoovers of the world are not. Tickets: $10. For info, visit mauifilmfestival.com. [COREY NIELSEN]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Scrooge You! Friday-Saturday (Nov. 24-25), 7:30 p.m.; Sunday (Nov. 26), 2 p.m. at Steppingstone Playhouse [STAGE] It’s the annual production of Scrooged! We all know the story: a rich old miser refuses to share his wealth or warmth of any kind. He employs his exact opposite, a poor man who is caring and giving. It’s extremely appropriate on an island where half the population is of the loving, sharing and hard-working type and the other half are rich tourists or snow birds who can be, at times, a little… what’s the word? Insatiable? Not to mention that the holiday celebrations they enjoy so much are made possible by those working on said “holidays!” Whoa, that was a little off-track; I swear I’m not bitter. Anyway, the show should be a fun-filled, heartwarming event for the whole fam. Scrooged! runs weekends through Dec. 17. Tickets: $18. Steppingstone Playhouse, Queen Ka`ahumanu Center, 244-8760. [HEIDI KING]

THURSDAY

House of the Rising Sum Saturday (Nov. 25), 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Bailey House Museum [CULTURAL BENEFIT] It takes a lotta money to keep one of Hawai`i’s oldest buildings in existence. Think of all the activity that’s gone on since 1833: the Bailey House once served as the Mission station for the Wailuku Female Seminary and was occupied by Edward Bailey and his family until 1888. Now the Museum features gardens filled with native Hawaiian and missionary-era plants, Hawaiian artifacts, missionary furnishings and paintings—important stuff you don’t get to see just any-ole-where. Such a prestigious cause needs valuable entertainers, like Uluwehi Guerrero, Lei`ohu Ryder and Richard Ho`opi`i, for instance. But they need backup, too, in the form of food booths, arts and crafts, cultural demos and a silent auction. Tickets: $10 in advance, $15 day of show, keiki free with paid adult. Call 244-3326 or visit www.mauimuseum.org.

[STORYTELLING FESTIVAL] A few of Hawai`i’s better known storytellers will be performing their craft as well as teaching. Tom Cummings, “a traditional master storyteller,” is also known as one of the Bishop Museum’s “treasures.” Cummings will be teaching two of the workshops earlier on Saturday. Kathy Collins, the Mana`o radio personality and woman from the “Tita says no litta” campaign, will be performing as well as teaching in a workshop entitled “Kealoha.” Not to be confused with the workshop title, Kealoha Wong will be performing some slam poetry. Wong is a slam contest winner and a pioneer of the Honolulu slam poetry scene. Wong has been the host at Studio 1’s “First Thursday” since 2003. The weekly event is one of the nations most attended slam poetry contests. Tickets for the performance are $20, and $10 for the workshops (various, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.). Call 242-7469 for more info and tickets. [KEITH BENEDICT]

DAY

[CLASSICAL] The term “classical music” covers a broad range of styles of music that have been around since the fall of the Roman Empire. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to a concert in the year—let’s say the year 1606? Would it have been like going to an epic, arena-sized concert today? You know, without pyrotechnics and video displays, that is. Speaking of which, Robert Pollock is the founder of the Ebb and Flow Ensemble. He is also a composer and a pianist. Members of the Honolulu Symphony will be performing as part of Ebb and Flow, including Mark Votapek, cello, Ignace Jang, violin, and Scott Anderson, clarinet. Together they will be performing recently commissioned works as well as modern contemporary favorites, along with very contemporary multimedia presentations. Tickets: $25, halfprice for keiki. Call 242-7469. [KB]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Fantasy Bubble Pops The Fountain of Youth is just a dying tree Metaphysical space age imaginings counter the death of a loved one in writer/director Darren Aronofsky’s visually stunning yet superficial fantasy. Tommy (Hugh Jackman) is a scientist obsessed with discovering and implementing a cure for his wife Izzy’s (Rachael Weisz) cancer in time to save her from death. Izzy has been writing a sci-fi fantasy novel called The Fountain, about a 16th century discovery of the fountain of youth by Thomas, a Spanish conquistador (also played by Jackman), inspired by her husband’s quest to save her life.

The Fountain

★★★★★ Rated R/96 mins.

The “fountain” is revealed to be more of a lurking Tree of Life whose sap will impart lasting mortality on whoever drinks its milky white essence. Izzy’s wish that Tommy complete the book on her behalf results in his own reflective reverie wherein he floats through the cosmos as Tom Creo, a 26th century astronaut enclosed inside a bubble spacecraft. Tom occasionally removes bark from the dying tree of eternal life to sustain himself when he isn’t meditating about his long journey. The three narrative threads combine to form a movie that is alternately beguiling and annoying. Tom’s desert island bubble approaches the enormous golden Xibalba nebula where the bald, meditating New Age astronaut will ostensibly be reunited with Izzy whose ghost periodically appears to command him to finish writing her book. The Fountain suffers most when the audience is made to endure Tommy’s wallowing crying fits that intersperse the

Rub-a-dub-dub, Rachel-Weisz-in-a-tub...

film’s latter half as part of the real-life sub-plot. Jackman’s notable charisma keeps the scenes from appearing ugly, even if the consequence is distasteful for his character’s loathsome self-indulgence. Although the space travel plot is the strongest of the three stories, it seeps with a pretentious tone that perverts Aronofsky’s thematic intention of romantic loyalty and everlasting love. Wearing billowy white clothes, Tom levitates in the lotus position as a hippy space traveler haunted by his wife’s specter. Tom busies himself tattooing black rings around his arm to track the passing years, just as a tree’s rings delineate its lifespan, while he waits to enter the nebula that will conclude Izzy’s novel. Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) is a stylisti-

cally visionary director trapped by the limitations of his writing abilities. The Spanish conquistador story is laughable for its childish trappings, and the modern day love story carries nagging elements such as Tom’s emotional fragility and lost wedding ring that dogs the movie as a superfluous ruse. The Fountain works best as a high-concept sci-fi film with all of its seams showing. That Aronofsky inflates it with so much romantic helium condemns the piece as a soft soap melodrama built on unaffecting characters. The visually spectacular inner-nebula culmination is a stunner, and its seemingly drug-induced quality resonates in your memory. The scene has beauty, power and cinematic weight. Here is a movie based on one scene, and it is a doozy. MTW

‘It’ll Be a Lot Funnier Than This!’ Lewis Black comes to Maui

ewis Black has been called “caustic,” “cranky” and “bile-spewing”—and that’s by his own publicist. He’s also one of the funniest guys out there right now. Each week Black angrily denounces social, political and corporate nonsense on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. No mere “angry white man,” Black ridicules the right and savages the special interests in a way only an unreconstructed liberal could love. He’s also a fine veteran of the legitimate stage, having written more than 40 plays, some of which have been produced with such actors as Teri Garr and that one guy from Perfect Strangers who wasn’t Balki. His latest film, Unaccompanied Minors, opens sometime around Christmas. These days he’s on a nationwide tour, which stops on Maui on Nov. 25. I spoke to Black two days after the Midterm Elections put the Democrats back into power in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He was in the middle of a day packed with media interviews, and I was at home suffering from a horrible cold. In other words, we were pretty much in the same emotional state:

L

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: So how do you feel about the elections? LEWIS BLACK: I think until the Democrats do something again on any level, until they show any level of interest in governing the country, the jury’s still out. We’ve had six years of them not paying attention.

NOVEMBER 22, 2006

Who were you most happy to see lose? [Senator Rick] Santorum. Without a doubt. I haven’t seen someone that brain dead in a while. He has said some of the most obnoxious things about gay people. If you’re a private person and you believe them, okay. But as a senator, he shouldn’t say them. Oh, and he homeschools his kids. I can’t wait to see what that does. During the campaign, who was funnier: Senator George Allen, who came off as a racist frat boy or Senator John Kerry, who tried to joke about President Bush but seemed to insult our troops? Allen. There’s more stuff. What’s really funny is that they were actually talking about him as a presidential candidate. We get more careless by the day. Good to see we don’t have to deal with him anymore. It’s funny how we never listened to him unless he said something really stupid. What’s your biggest concern these days? Probably our ineptitude. We seem to become more inept

Do you think the Democrats won or the Republicans lost?

34

I think it was mostly that the Republicans lost. The Democrats haven’t participated in government since the Iraq war began. The opposition party is supposed to ask questions—that’s your job. It’s been painful to watch ever since. It’s not brain surgery—it’s called compromise.

every day. We don’t seem to be able to do anything anymore. It’s amazing. I saw the most unbelievable idiocy during the campaign reach an unimaginable level in my lifetime. I’m really surprised [the Republicans] didn’t refer to Democrats as the Osama Party. So what’s your show out here going to be like? It’ll be a lot funnier than this! I’ll just take what’s been going on this past year and scream about it for 75 minutes. Sounds great. Anything else? Yeah, just one more thing: if you’re thinking of coming back to the mainland, don’t. Just stay there. You’re better off. I think you can get most of what you need from Amazon. MTW

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Only those who are attracted to the unattainable have fantasies about Sagittarian partners. Those poor suckers are doomed to disappointment as one Sag after another loves them and leaves them. The rest of us are more realistic about our connections to you fascinating, sexy and notoriously hard-to-pindown Sagittarians. So when you’re finally ready to commit—on whatever level—you’re likely to have a hell of a time convincing us that it’s not a passing whim or tremendous joke. This week’s biggest challenge is overcoming your own hard-earned reputation and persuading everyone that you really intend to stick around this time.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) It’s not that you Capricorns don’t understand yourselves. It’s that you’re frequently convinced (usually with good reason) that the rest of the world doesn’t understand you at all. Thus you have no idea how to communicate what’s going on inside you to those it concerns. You’re so convinced they’ll take it the wrong way that you garble it completely—ironically thereby ensuring that they’ll do exactly that. There are, luckily, at least a couple people ready and capable of really getting you. All you have to do is be clear, patient and open. The rest, if you let it, will take care of itself. You’ve been waiting so long for the green light that you’re likely to forget to go when it finally appears. Unfortunately, there’s no one waiting behind you to give you a honk and remind you to hit the gas and proceed, finally, after ages of waiting. You’ve been stuck at this place long enough. You’re not the only one who’s ready for you to move on. The rest of us would love to see you go somewhere else, too. Check it out. Light’s green. Go.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Could you be any more sensitive? I’ve watched Pisces who otherwise resemble full-grown men act like insecure 13-year-old girls over someone’s offhand, joke-y comment about their weight. A casual remark—let alone an authentic critique—can send some of you into obsessive mental spirals worthy of any angst-ridden young teenager. The irony is that your confidence doesn’t match your looks, brains or talent; a Leo gifted with any one of those would probably be an intolerable braggart. I’d hate for you to cultivate arrogance to match your gifts, but some confidence is long overdue. Work on that this week.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

There’s something admirable about your principled but impetuous nature. It’s also pretty dangerous, however, like when it compels you to rush out and join the Armed Forces out of some well-meaning idea that you ought to defend your country. Maybe you should; all I’m suggesting is that some decisions deserve careful consideration about what you’d be getting yourself into before you jump right in. Don’t be brash about anything that requires more than a month of your time or the cash you have in your wallet, especially this week. Going with your gut is fine most of the time, but second thoughts can, occasionally, save you from your own well-meaning idiocy.

If not now, when?

If you’ve really put all of yourself into it, there’s a point when whatever you’ve created develops a life of its own, whether we’re talking about a work of art, a kid or a relationship. You can no longer truly control it; even attempting to do so could kill it. All you can do is hang on, throw love at it, and occasionally try to gently steer it in the right direction, or at least keep it from flying off a cliff. This is a moment to be cherished and celebrated, however, not dreaded. Despite the inherent frustrations (especially if it’s headed in a direction you’re not fond of), independence and freedom are beautiful things. Keep that in mind this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Beware invisible peer pressure. For some reason, you imagine what people might think of you, and it keeps you from doing something (or not doing something). Your actions aren’t limited by others’ actual opinions, just your best guesses about what they might be. When people actually try to pressure you into something, you’re remarkably resistant. It’s only your own fears about their judgment that compel you—usually in the wrong direction. Wipe all that speculation from your mind. Doing what you want (or simply what’s right) is what you ought to be doing, regardless of what other people think of it (or what you think they think).

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Thank goodness for that shell of yours. I know at times that emotional wall between you and most of the world (except for the select few you allow inside) is the bane of your existence. But there are other times, like this week, when you’ll be pleased to have it. So what if you lack the thick skin or emotional resilience of a Sagittarian or Gemini? You’ve got a shell. Although in general it’s good practice to keep that thing as wide open as possible, I’d advise against that at the moment. There’s a storm coming. This is a good week to lock up tight and wait it out.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Congratulations, sort of. You’ve won third place in the astrological category Tends Towards Extremes, following Pisces and (of course) Scorpio. Naturally, Leos gravitate more often to less specifically self-destructive extremes than those two signs, but that doesn’t mean your own indulgences are exceptionally healthy. Quit smoking, already, or having the kind of relationship which makes you feel bad about yourself. Extremes are fascinating, until they’re not. These are making you a less interesting person than you’d be without them. Ditch them, already.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Like everyone, you have good days and bad days. You expect yourself to perform at the top of your game at all times, and you’re unduly harsh when you inevitably fall short once in a while. Cut yourself some slack. When you’re at your best, you blow most of the rest of us away, at least in the Getting Shit Done department. Even on your worst days you’re still more proficient and efficient than your average Pisces. This week may have more supposedly “bad” days than good ones, but that doesn’t mean they have to suck. They’re actually quite likely to be lovely and pleasant—as long as you’re not beating yourself up for not beating your own best records.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Although I’m usually bugged by anything you do that smacks of social climbing, I must admit that your ability to look out for yourself (and, by extension, those you love) is useful. This week it’s likely to come especially in handy. There are a few folks floating around who could really help you out if only they knew you needed the help, and you made it worth their while. Before you start dishing out sexual favors, however, don’t let your drive get the best of you. Your self-respect is still worth a lot more than your self-advancement.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Desire is a trap. Sometimes you want something so bad you can’t let it go—even when you know letting it go is the only way to get it. The problem is, there are no guarantees. Here’s where you’ve got to subject yourself to logic-driven tough-love. Look at it this way: desperately hanging on absolutely guarantees you won’t get your wish. Letting go of it means you still probably won’t get it, but you might. Even if you don’t ever get it, releasing your desire means you can stop torturing yourself over it, and that’s a good enough reason by itself.

I had to wait awhile for it. But when it finally did arrive, it came in a nondescript manila envelope. Once I removed the contents, I quickly played show-and-tell with all of my girlfriends. And this is what they said: “Wow, this is hot!” “Where’d this come from? Oh, New York? That figures.” “Um, do you mind if I borrow this overnight?” “Hey, I think I know that guy.” I first discovered Sweet Action three years ago from a brief reference to its then soon-to-bereleased first issue. Jane magazine said that it would be “a porn rag with frontal male nudity that feels like your best friends wrote it.” I ordered it on the spot. Up to that point, the porn rag market had been operating on unequal terms, gender-specifically speaking. One reason was that when it came to sex, women were purported to be less visually stimulated than men. Consequently, men had a legion of glossy nude mags; we had Playgirl, where—as The Village Voice’s Tristan Taormino puts it—“the majority of the men are the onedimensional equivalent of Chippendales strippers (is that redundant?): shiny, dated, and too groomed for their own good.” With that sort of metrosexual appeal, it’s no small wonder that Playgirl largely developed a gay male following. That is not to say women did not crave more publications that featured naked male parts. At least amongst my girlfriends and I, visual images are huge turnons—but mostly in context with something relatable. Playgirl was not for us. A sculpted torso of Fabio, long blonde locks flowing, clutching a fair maiden in a backbreaking pose on the cover of Lord of My Stable? Not so much. But a tattooed, sleepy-eyed dude holding a cigarette and a bottle of beer while lounging naked on a rumpled futon? Hot! Enter Sweet Action. Aside from other similar photos of gloriously imperfect but accessibly attractive men—with the kind of scruffy facial hair and pensive gaze you find charming in that guitar-wielding neighbor you’ve been crushing on not-sosecretly—that first issue also featured cool graphics and witty, informative and irreverent writing with a “best friends”-quality, conversational tone. The content definitely has a pervasive appeal to the slacker elite: interviews with Eugene Hutz—the front man for Gogol Bordello, a gypsy-punk band from New York City—and Seen, the godfather of graffiti, as well as an article giving an X-rated tour through the early days of porn video games, an investigative report on the lost art of the hand job, and a small list of things to do when you’re horny, broke and lazy. The second installment (what, you thought I was only going to order one?) was their “Music Issue” featuring reviews, on-the-road tales from The Giraffes and Crimson Sweet, an interview with Big Daddy Kane, more artsy, voyeuristic photos and cool, edgy graphics by Hope G., and a dissertation on the recent FCC obscenity crackdown. But the best part was a letter from an 80-year-old woman, enclosed with a check for $10 to cover the cost of one issue plus mailing, who said, “If your magazine is as advertised, I’ve been waiting for such a one for many a year.” Sweet Action followed that up with an issue featuring more rock band interviews, a board game, a full color poster of a cute naked boy and my favorite, their fourth installment, “The Heartbreak Issue.” By now it seems the founders of Sweet Action—Micole Taggart and Robin Adams—and their beloved crew have nearly doubled their page count without sacrificing their raw, DIY-attitude and creative edge. Their regular features are all there, as well as the particular charm of being “horny, heartbroken, and lazy.” From confessions of homemade dildos to a profile of Iris Brooks, the co-founder of the Accompanied Library—and, yes, pictures of naked men—I’ve finally found a dirty mag that I can relate to. So Thanksgiving’s this week, and what am I thankful for this year? Sweet, Sweet Action, baby. Awww yeah…
