TAKE 5 Actors Who Should Be President CHARLIZE THERON She won an Oscar and Golden Globe for playing serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, so she knows all about crime and capital punishment. She filed the nation’s first class action sexual harassment lawsuit in North Country, so she’s got the lucrative trial lawyers behind her. And she got naked in a church in Devil’s Advocate, so she’s nailed down the always-tough-to-nail-down faithbased/pervert vote. Now I know her being born in South Africa means she can’t run for President, but who cares? Arnold comes from Austria and he’s Governor of California… well, for the time being. (Anthony Pignataro)
FRANKIE MUNIZ He’s young, he’s fresh and unlike a certain someone, he’s yet to have a coke habit or a D.U.I. As the middle child, he’s also used to being blamed for all the wrongdoing, and accepts it with a quiet humility. His mom is a controlling bitch, just like the conservatives, and his dad is a total pushover, just like the liberals—though somehow, there’s a working balance and after every conflict someone has learned a valuable lesson. And anyway, Fox has already falsely elected one president, who’s gonna stop them? (Gabrielle Poccia) *Same day booking only subject to availability. Kama’aina friends and family! Only one ID requred.
VIGGO MORTENSEN Perhaps we need a more creative thinker in our government… someone who effectively portrays a leader (Aragorn, Lord of the Rings trilogy) but who can also compose and sing his own coronation song… someone who can at least act compassionate and determined without sacrificing his honor or integrity (Frank T. Hopkins, Hidalgo)… someone who’s played a mild-mannered, humble family man who also knows how to kick ass but only when protecting his family (Tom Stall, A History of Violence)… and someone who’s, well, HOT. Yeah… Wait, are we talking about future presidency or my next date? Sorry, I forgot the question. (Samantha Campos)
WOODY HARRELSON For President! Or at least Drug Czar, because isn’t it about time we really legalize Marijuana? It could be the gateway to legalizing other recreational drugs, too. I know Rush Limbaugh would support me on this one. With all of the drug manufacturing companies looking out for their financial interests and not our actual health, I think we should damn well be able to self-medicate our bodies. (Jen Russo)
ANGELINA JOLIE Look, I’m only speaking for the rest of the office, as well as Jane magazine, when I put in my vote for Ms. Jolie. Personally, I’m growing a bit weary of my former actress-I-would-go-gay-for and all of her headlined personal drama. But hey, aside from her admirable Goodwill Ambassador work, we could think of her as our own little WMD; she could wreak havoc with the hearts and minds—and marriages, ouch!—of terrorists and foes the world over! Yay, Angelina! (SC)

ehbrah@mauitime.com The psycho ex-girlfriend routine has got to stop! We are not together! We have not been together for a very long time! That means you should stop telling all your friends that I’m your boyfriend. And please stop dropping by my house, trying to buy me back with gifts and trying to make out with my friends when I reject your advances. Do you really think gossiping about me to my best friends is going to win me back? I used to think we could be friends, but now I just think you are way too mean-spirited, bad-tempered, bitchy and vindictive, and I think other people are finally starting to see it, too. Until now, I had never called you names, said bad things about you, or wanted anything other than for you to be happy and move on with your life. But now, I don’t care anymore.

Maui County officials decide to act at Ma’alaea
Waving signs at Wailea Beach on Nov. 5
Pump, Don’t Dump Bring your signs Saturday, Dec. 10, at 9 a.m. at Keawakapu Beach. The State of Hawai’i continues to drag its feet in building the pump-out facility at Ma’alaea Harbor. In frustration, residents, user groups and even visitors are raising their voices. “The letters to the editor in The Maui News are full of hysteria [and] people are picketing at Wailea beaches,” said Jeff Strahn, Vice President and General Manager for Maui Dive Shop at the Nov. 17, 2005 Governor’s Maui Council of Advisory meeting. “Something must be done to address this problem.” Despite all the planning and funding done over the past three years, state officials continue to say that it will take another three years to build the pumpout facility at Ma’alaea—a facility the industry has been asking for since the Reagan Administration. Acknowledging the state’s lack of action, Richard Fairclo—a member of the Kihei Canoe Club and part of a grass-roots citizen effort named the “Pump-Don’t-Dump” coalition—said the simplest solution would be for the governor to provide dockside pump trucks at Ma’alaea. The harbor may be the state’s responsibility, but Maui County Mayor Arakawa has been working to implement an interim solution to stop the dumping. “We recognize the concern in our community,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “It’s not palatable for community to wait three to four more years for a solution while the state works on the permanent fix.” The mayor has been working with the Ocean Tourism Coalition to find county funding for pump trucks to begin pumping at Ma’alaea. Lynn A.S. Araki-Regan, Maui County’s Economic Development Coordinator, said the county is assisting the Ocean Tourism Coalition with a

$60,000 grant to hire a pump truck to service the vessels at Ma’alaea Harbor. “Once the grant application is submitted by the Ocean Tourism Coalition to OED [the Office of Economic Development], it is anticipated that the review of the application, as well as the preparation, execution and processing of the grant agreement will take between three to four weeks,” she said. “In the meantime, OED is in the process of applying for a $60,000 grant for matching funds from the Hawai’i Tourism Authority to help facilitate a second year of pumping at Ma’alaea.” As it is now, most boats docking at Ma’alaea Harbor or the Kihei Boat ramp dump their waste three miles offshore. While completely legal, this dumping area lies within the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Under the mayor’s plan, all commercial tour and snorkel boats tying up at Ma’alaea could have their tanks pumped out at the docks, effectively ending their dumping into the whale sanctuary. The $60,000 grant will not cover all the boats’ pumping expenses, but local operators still appreciate the effort. “I applaud Mayor Arakawa for stepping up to the plate and helping us find a temporary solution,” said Strahn. Strahn added that there are many details boat owners still need to consider. They’re going to have to find hoses long enough to reach the pump trucks, then learn how to handle and store them after the human waste has been pumped through them. That shouldn’t prove too difficult. But even if the boaters find their hoses and the county-funded trucks start rolling into the harbor, it’s just a temporary measure. At some point, the state is going to have to do what they said they’d do. “We just need the state to take responsibility and build this pump-out facility at Ma’alaea,” said Strahn. MTW

It’s hard to find a more interesting and thought-provoking county document than the Maui County Department of Liquor Control 2005 Annual Report. From its bright red front cover emblazoned with the LC investigator’s badge to the completely blank white back cover that’s suitable to use as a placemat, the Annual Report gives true insight into the world of county liquor inspectors and liquor law enforcement. In fiscal year 2005, the LC’s Adjudication Board saw 34 complaint and accusation cases totaling 106 charges. That was one fewer complaint and accusation from last year, but also way, way up over last year’s paltry 65 charges. Of this year’s 106 charges, exactly zero were found “not guilty”—just like last year—though seven somehow wound up dismissed. Of the remaining 99, 95 ended in fines, three resulted in license suspension and there was one license revoked—that would be Idini’s in Wailuku. LC investigators also looked into twodozen noise complaints. “The Liquor Control Officers are certified in the use of instruments required to measure sound,” states the report. “The enforcement staff investigated complaints on noise emanating from licensed premises and administrative actions were taken against the licensees who were found to be in violation…” This always confuses people, because “noise” is obviously not “liquor.” But—and this is a true story—the LC charter says one of the department’s jobs is to make sure liquor licensees aren’t too noisy. What noise—or obscenities, for that matter, which is another LC responsibility— have to do with the regulation of the sale and distribution of alcohol isn’t exactly clear from the report, but until residents and establishments start agitating to keep the Liquor Control department confined to liquor, this is the way things are. But the report isn’t all dry tables and statistics. It’s got colorful photographs, too, of all the department staff, investigators, board members and commissioners. Well, not all the commissioners: Lanai’s Edwin Vila has a “No Photo Available” note next to his name. That’s because he hasn’t really showed up yet, even though his term of office began back in April.

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Nov. 17, 2005 message to 77 Hawai’i National Guard troops who just returned from Kuwait: “We are glad that this first group will be reunited with their families, especially as we near the holidays. But we cannot forget those who are still serving overseas and the sacrifices they are making to defend freedom and democracy.”
What she didn’t say: It’s probably unfair to expect any elected official to offer anything other than bland, rosy platitudes when speaking of U.S. troops fighting a war, but her comments about “democracy” seem especially odd in a week that’s seen allegations that our Iraqi allies have been torturing hundreds of prisoners, kinda like the old days under dictator Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi government has denied torturing anyone, and is now accusing the U.S. of lobbing white phosphorus artillery shells into civilian areas—a charge the Pentagon denies. Then again, no one ever said defending freedom and democracy was easy. -Anthony Pignataro

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16 After a mere two hours of deliberation, the University of Hawai’i Faculty Senate voted today to reject the proposed $50 million research center with the U.S. Navy. Thirty-one faculty members raised their hands in opposition to the deal, which would put UH on a very select list of public universities that conduct secret military research for the Department of Defense, while just 18 opted to support it. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, the faculty members were originally going to do the vote by secret ballot, but decided to just do the thing out in the open after seeing so many protesters line the hall. Now the swabjockeys still have hope—UH interim President David McClain and Manoa campus interim Chancellor Denise Konan are the ones who have to make the final decision, and they’re being real cagey right now.
THURSDAY, NOV. 17 For some reason that hasn’t really been made clear, state transportation honchos are now saying Wackenhut security guards at Kahului Airport aren’t up to specs. “They are not in line with the level of service that the state and the public expects and deserves,” Deputy Director of Airports Brian Sekiguchi said in a statement quoted in today’s Maui News. “The safety of the public and the people who work at the airport is a top priority for the administration…” Wackenhut’s “level of service” isn’t in line with what we want or deserve? What gave him that idea? Was it the time when a Wackenhut guard made a citizen’s arrest on a Pacific Wings employee in the airport manager’s office? Or was it the time when a

Wackenhut guard threatened—on videotape, mind you—to “kill” a Pacific Wing’s employee? I mean, sure, that “I going shoot this fucker in the head” Wackenhut guy was arrested and charged with making seconddegree terroristic threats, but come on! How is that not in line with Wackenhut’s expected “level of service?” They’re just security guards, hired to protect us from dangerous suicide bombers and nutcases who drive their SUVs into the baggage claim terminal from time to time. Even they have to let off steam now and again.

FRIDAY, NOV. 18 Unless something pretty close to miraculous happens soon, the U.S. Senate will not vote on the Akaka-Stevens Native Hawaiian Recognition Bill this year. It was supposed to come up for a vote a couple months ago, but then Hurricane Katrina drowned New Orleans and everyone started pushing recovery appropriations and such. But since then, no one has been really in a hurry to get it back into the Senate schedule, even though Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R, Tennessee) promised Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawai’i) that there’d be a vote this year. “Frist is sincere, but you know how tough it is when time is running out,” Akaka said in today’s Honolulu Advertiser. Still, Akaka remains optimistic, telling the Advertiser that he’s been talking to Frist every day about finding time to vote on the contentious bill that right-wing Republicans hate because they say it will lead to Hawaiian secession and left-wing native Hawaiian activists hate because they say it won’t lead to Hawaiian secession. Oh, and Akaka’s asked his co-sponsor Ted Stevens (R, Alaska) to call Frist, too. Now I don’t want to seem like I’m piling on, but Akaka helped Stevens out by voting for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife

SUNDAY, NOV. 20 I’ve got nothing.
MONDAY, NOV. 21 Tonight marked the last of 11 “Talk Story” meetings on the big plans of developers Bill Frampton and Dave Ward to build many, many homes in Olowalu. Ostensibly the meetings were designed to let the general public help plan Olowalu Town LLC’s big project before county planners begin to take the whole thing apart—but the actual execution said otherwise. Just three of the 11 “community-based planning workshops” took place after normal business hours, meaning most people interested in the future of Olowalu had no chance to attend because they were busy at work. How bone-headed is that? Refuge (ANWR) and all he’s asking of Stevens is that he call Majority Leader Frist? Man, that’s not how logrolling works! You’ve got to get in there and twist some arms! Stevens owes you big time!
SATURDAY, NOV. 19 Great news everyone! The North West Cruiseship Association (NWCA) has just announced that it’s ditching the hated, ridiculous, completely toothless Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it has with the State of Hawai’i regarding the pouring of sludge and sewage into the ocean and things of that nature! It’s in yesterday’s Honolulu Advertiser if you don’t believe me. In fact, I’ve got the story right here and it says in plain language that… oh, wait a sec. Yeah, I really should read stories all the way through before I start yelling like the town

Actually, it’s quite clever. Frampton and Ward, as well as landowners Jim Reilly and Peter Martin, don’t need the public galvanized behind them—they just need the public to stay neutral. And what better way to do that than by blanketing the island with full-color brochures advertising all kinds of gatherings with the developers? Even if the public can’t attend, the mere offer is enough to get most people to think that the whole Olowalu development thing must be nice. That’s good enough to keep throngs of angry residents out of planning hearings, and that practically guarantees approval. Isn’t PR grand? Anthony Pignataro is willing to put up with a lot of crap, but believes that paying $2.75 ATM fees is really going too far. MTW

Yeah, that’s not good at all. Sure, NWCA member Norweigan Cruiselines says in the article it will still abide by the MOU, but for how long? What about the other cruise lines? Is it that they’re not making enough money? Sure they pull in billions of dollars each year, but with inflation and all, that really isn’t so much anymore. Is that the reason? Come on, tell me. GOING TO THE LORD LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE Shortly after Hurricane Wilma struck Florida in October, officials said 911 operators in Palm Beach County were flooded not only with storm-related calls but with self-imposed injuries. Some of the problems (according to an October Palm Beach Post story): brushclearing chain-saw accidents; the old “cigarette-lighter-to-check-fuel-level-of-a-generator”; people falling off roofs while making repairs; setting up a generator too close to a window; cooking inside on a charcoal grill; pouring gasoline into a generator while it’s running; failing to respect downed power lines; and stacking items atop a previously “on” electric stove so that, when power resumes, they catch fire.
BILL COLLECTORS Police in Twin Falls, Idaho, confiscated almost $1 billion in counterfeit money in October in a doomed scheme in which the loot consisted only of bills of the denomination of $1 million (which does not legally exist); a man from Buhl, Idaho, had tried to give a bank that amount as collateral for a loan. WHAT LOCAL NONPROFITS NEED FROM YOU THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
This year we’ve been told many times to help out hurricane, earthquake and war victims by donating to the Red Cross, the United Way and other big, national charities. And that’s good because they do great work. But times like this also mean that people stop thinking about local charities and nonprofit organizations that are also doing important, useful work. So this year we’ve compiled a kind of directory listing local nonprofit organizations that need your help and assistance. What follows are their wish lists for the holiday season. If you really believe this is the season of giving, please look over our list and donate what you can. We’re not asking you to shell out a ton of dough here—some of the stuff these guys want is pretty cheap.

It’s easy to complain about not being able to afford a new car, house renovations or an off-island trip. But those of us with food on our table have so much to be grateful for. Maui Food Bank provides this basic need to the 7,000 to 9,000 people every month who would otherwise go hungry without their assistance. Through a network of 70 participating nonprofit organizations, Maui Food Bank collects, warehouses and distributes mass quantities of donated food to those in need. They also seek to educate the community about hunger, as well as come up with possible solutions. THEY NEED: • Food
Maui OnStage
Maui Onstage enrichs the island’s community through support and creation of quality performing arts experiences. They also conduct stewardship of the historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Performing arts makes Maui a more vibrant and interesting place to live. But while the arts add tangible public value, grant support is continuing to decline, making individual contributions and assistance that much more important. THEY NEED: • Building supplies (lumber, paint, etc.) • Pick-up truck to transport theatrical materials, set pieces and supplies • Hundreds of volunteers, who make up the lifeblood of community theater • Financial support

Hui Malama Learning Center
Education and literacy are gifts and rights that can never be taken away. But what do we do if someone cannot get through our education system? Hui Malama Learning Center picks up where all other teaching methods have failed. They have extensive alternative educational programs for those who want a GED, people suffering from illiteracy and others. Their programs include home-school enrichment, tutoring for those suspended from public school as well as a full high school curriculum. It’s all based on small group instruction so each child gets maximum attention. Hui Malama programs also extend to incarcerated individuals and English as a second language learners. Over the past 35 years, more than 18,000 students have participated in their programs and the demand for their services in our community continues to grow. THEY NEED: • Money for tuition assistance • Patio furniture • DVD video cameras and digital still cameras for youth programs • Flat screen/flat panel computer monitors • Document shredder • Young adult books, fiction and non-fiction CONTACT: Laren Jardine, 244-5911, ext. 32; Andie Contemanos, 244-5911, ext. 29; Inchala Cadorna, 244-5911, ext. 21.
Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center
Art enriches the lives within our community and nourishes our individuality. Best of all everyone can create and be involved in art. How you say? By starting with the amazing programs open to children, teens and adults at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center. An artistic hub for Maui, the Hui recruits cutting edge visiting artists, dsiplays various exhibits throughout the year and provides a support network for artist exchange and learning. Their recent, successful effort to buy the historic Kaluanui Estate and maintain the mansion and scenic grounds shows their commitment to the community. Members of the Hui enjoy discounts on programs but all are welcome to join. Exhibitions and visiting artist lectures are free to the public. THEY NEED: • A tractor to care for and maintain the newly acquired tract of land • A golf cart to deliver supplies to studios • A two-drawer and four-drawer metal filing cabinet to keep all their records straight • Financial support
Maui Boys and Girls Club
This organization provides a positive place for kids to go after school. Like the Passport to Manhood program, where a mentor adult talks to boys about what they learned in life. There’s also homework assistance, girls groups, cooking classes, talent shows, sports competitions and art encouragement. THEY NEED: • Program staff for sports, fitness and recreation, education, leadership, health, life skills and the arts. • Movie passes to be used as rewards for program participation • Big screen TV • Stereo system • PA system • Sports equipment • Video camera • Color printer • Laminating machine • Sturdy chairs and table • Art supplies • New vans for two clubs • Foosball & Ping Pong tables • Lockable, segmented sports cabinet • Lockable trophy case • Large announcement boards • Couches • Microwave & Conventional oven • Two new office desks with chairs • Copy machine CONTACT: Kelly Pearson, Director of Operations, (808) 242-4363.
Maui Family Support Services
For the last 25 years, Maui Family Support Services has visited with every new mother, informing her and her family of their childcare services for low-income families, Early Headstart program, Healthy Start program and other assistance. They also work with teenagers to prevent teen pregnancy, as well as help pregnant teens and new teen mothers. The organization meets about 4,000 families every year, and ends up working closely with 400 of them. THEY NEED: • Diapers • Art supplies • Car seats (new or gently used) • High chairs (new or gently used)
CONTACT: Call Toni Paul, Executive Assistant, at 808-572-6560 ext. 8.
Paia Youth and Cultural Center
The Paia Youth Center offers a variety of unique experiences to youth as well as an opportunity to broaden their horizons in understanding themselves and the people around them. Youths run the adjoining Paia Skate Park, Paia Bay Café and, eventually, the center’s low power radio station KOPO 89.5 FM. Granted a license in January of this year, the Youth Center has until July 2006 to get on the air. When it does, youth will be able to learn media literacy, which will help them run the only youth-operated and programmed radio station in the state of Hawai’i. THEY NEED: • Surround sound stereo system • DVD/CD player • ping pong table • pool table supplies • basketball backboard and hoop • native beach dune plant starts • volunteer carpentry/repair labor • 20-foot by 20-foot tent • volunteer radio/audio engineers • Radio station manager (paid position) • volunteer mentors who understand radio regulations, broadcast etiquette and technology

Maui AIDS Foundation
The Center for Disease Control reports that 25 percent of those in the U.S. who are HIV-positive don’t know it. Believing that prevention is their first defense against HIV, the Maui AIDS Foundation runs outreach groups that go to our beaches and bars to teach folks about how to reduce the risk of getting AIDS. MAF also provides free anonymous and confidential HIV testing. They’ve also formed the island’s only network for those living with the disease by providing free case management, transportation, health care, housing and food services. MAF is currently serving 160 clients county-wide. THEY NEED: • Funds for the Emergency Fund. This is used to pay for miscellaneous health care, transportation and homecare expenses that otherwise would go unpaid by clients who have HIV/AIDS and are impoverished • Dry erase board • Projector for PowerPoint • Projector screen

Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter
This year the Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter was fortunate enough to receive many helping hands and cash contributions. This generosity helped further the organization’s mission of protecting the waters around the island by expanding its coastal water quality testing program and native planting projects. Overall the chapter is continuing to work on saving the waves at Ma’alaea, helping put marine teaching programs in local schools as well as beach clean-ups and other efforts to get people to understand the dangers of polluting our ocean.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Maui County
Where do kids go for support and advice when their own families are too busy and school counselors don’t seem like a good idea? The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Maui County matches Bigs (adults) with Littles (youth) in the community, forming a one-on-one mentoring program. They say youth in the program are 46 percent less likely to start using drugs, 27 percent less likely to start using alcohol and 52 percent less likely to skip school. The progression and development of Maui kids into productive and confident young adults is priceless to our community. Sixty percent of their income comes from clothing and small item donations. BBBS serves Maui and Molokai. WE NEED: • Clothing, knick-knacks, bedding, linens, shoes, handbags and other small items in good condition (no large appliances or furniture)
THEY NEED: • Volunteers • Cash contributions CONTACT: Jan Roberson, Maui Chapter Chair, PO Box 790549, Paia, HI 96779. Call (808) 575-2716 or email surfrider@hawaii.rr.com.
Maui Arts & Cultural Center
We go there to see a big name reggae show at the A&B Amphitheater, and to the Maui Film Festival at the Castle Theater on Wednesday nights. We’ve wandered through monthly exhibits with Hawaiian artists at the Schaefer Gallery, taken hula classes and sent our keiki to ballet workshops. We know Maui Arts & Cultural Center is a gathering place for our island community, providing inspiration, education, artistic and cultural diversity for all ages and interests. But this is only possible because of the community—annual donors, sponsors and volunteers are what keep the MACC such a viable center for enrichment and entertainment. THEY NEED: • A forklift • A flatbed utility cart (Taylor-Dunn type) • A 15-passenger van or cargo van
CONTACT: Call 242-9754 or visit our website at www.bbbsmaui.org and click on “Donate” to schedule your pick-up.
Maui Farm
The Maui Farm is a unique program that helps youth in the foster program and those from troubled families by providing a community-based alternative to institutional care. Located in Makawao, the Maui Farm provides an environment of ohana combined with farm environment activities. Youth have the opportunity to work with people, plants and animals while receiving services to address emotional and behavioral challenges. The youth then develop skills, learn responsibility and gain self worth. Foster parents are employees of the Maui Farm, hired to live in one of our group foster homes and provide loving care, support and training for five teenagers. Salary, benefits, housing, training and in-home support staff are provided. THEY NEED: • Caring adults to work as foster parents CONTACT: Paula Ambre, Executive Director, at (808) 579-8271. Fax resumes to 579-9055 or mail to PO Box 1776, Makawao, HI 96768.
Maui Economic Opportunity Youthbank
Lanai Youth Center
Teaching youths life skills and experience isn’t easy. Many Maui parents have to work two or three jobs just to pay the rent—where does that leave time for the kids and life’s lessons? The Maui Economic Opportunity Youthbank program focuses on giving Maui youth a healthy dose of life skills through classes, work experience and survival retreats. These are lessons kids might not learn elsewhere. They also offer courses in how to get along with each other, attitude, conflict resolution, nourishment and avoiding drugs and alcohol. They offer a variety of work that kids can tackle as a team, building their confidence and selfesteem (participating kids also get a stipend). The youth will gain survival skills and learn how to meet personal challenges through hikes and camping trips that are steeped in Hawaiian culture and history.
THEY NEED: • A 12-passenger van (new or used) in good working order. They currently have a 1988 Chevy Suburban and a 1993 Ford Van. Both were donated to the Youth Center as used vehicles, but due to their age they are continuously spending money to maintain these cars. These funds could have been better spent on youth programs. • Funds for another modular unit. They are currently located in a 20-foot by 40-foot modular unit but need more space.
THEY NEED: • Cash for food for the trips • Snacks and stipends during work experiences • Pens and paper for the journals each youth keeps of their work, class and activities • Camping/cooking equipment • A good throw net
CONTACT: Art Vento, 242-2787, ext. 264 or email art@mauiarts.org. Also, Mike Foley, 242-2787, ext. 259 or email mikef@mauiarts.org.
While Lanai is part of Maui County, that island’s youth are too far away to participate in Maui’s afterschool and other youth programs. The Lanai Youth Center provides a fun safe place for the youth of Lanai to gather. It’s the only agency on the island to provide structured and supervised activities for kids aged seven to 18. It’s open six days a week, 12 hours a day. The LYC strives to bring enhanced programs to children by building positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle. Their programs include homework assistance, prevention education, nutrition, cooking, sewing, arts, golf, archery, swimming and more. Though they’ve developed partnerships throughout the community to augment their programs, they need more community assistance.

Sunrise Café Quiet surroundings, hearty sustenance After a night spent downing Jager and tequila shots, I awoke the following afternoon in need of real, hearty sustenance. As usual, I grabbed my roommate—who played a big role in helping me down those Jager and tequila shots—and we headed to Lahaina’s Sunrise Café in hopes of staging a recovery.

Not many people notice Sunrise Café, which is not much more than a small shack hidden off of Front Street. But those in the know—or anyone who just happens to stumble upon it—have the pleasure of entering a restaurant that’s more than a café but not quite a diner. Or maybe it’s the other way around. In any case, if you’re in a hurry, grab a scone, muffin or order a cup of joe for the road. But if you have a few minutes to relax, then sneak onto the back terrace and enjoy the partial view of the ocean. Depending on your mood, Sunrise Café can satisfy your craving with breakfast food or their lunch/dinner selections. The menu is very diner-like, but with a personal, tropical accent. Sunrise Café offers morning entrees like French Toast, waffles and pancakes (with or without chocolate chips), and Lox Benedict ($5.95$7.95) to satisfy your desire. Since it was already mid-afternoon by the time my roommate and I arrived, we

decided on two lunch items after a long deliberation. I ordered the Sante Fe Burrito—a flour tortilla stuffed with beans, chicken, a mix of cheeses and then topped with homemade tropical salsa and more melted cheese ($6.95). My roommate opted for the Chinese Chicken Salad, which consisted of chow mein noodles, papaya and pineapple served on a bed of greens ($7.95). While our food was being prepared, we enjoyed our quiet surroundings and many glasses of water. Since we were the only people dining in the back, we had our choice of tables— should you have a similar seating situation, go with the one nestled in the corner on the far right. It’s got the best view of the ocean and the furthest proximity from the street. It wasn’t long before two surprisingly elegant plates of food arrived. After taking a moment to admire the presentation, we got down to business. My hefty burrito came steaming hot and covered in melted cheese and salsa as promised. My first delicious bite was packed with a variety of Mexican and island flavors. While I have no complaints about the quality or taste of the food, I was a little surprised to find rice and what I thought was tofu in my burrito instead of chicken. As for my roommate, she found her salad equally satisfying. The noodles and oriental dressing gave it a hearty taste while the fruit and greens offered a refreshing and cool flavor. All in all, we were full, happy and not nearly as hung over as when we’d arrived. Our meal put us in the perfect mood to spend the rest of the day at the beach. MTW

Swollen Members Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s; Saturday, 10 p.m. at Casanova [MUSIC] Normally when we think of Canada, what comes to mind first are Mounties and people saying, “eh?”—or is that just me? The point is, you don’t automatically think of kickass skaters and bombass rappers. But Canada is home to a skate group called the Red Dragons that—and I hope I’m not offending anyone here—could be described as similar to the Z-Boys. You know, just a bunch of hardcore skater dudes known and respected throughout the skater community. So some of the fellas involved with the Red Dragons came together to form Swollen Members. They have a hip hop/rap/rock/funky beat going on that reminds me of a new and improved Cypress Hill. Their rhymes on “Too Hot” are close to my heart, as they speak on drinking and getting crazy. (You can check it out for yourself on their web page at www.swollenmembers.com) Apparently, the folks at DC Shoe Company agree with me because they sponsor them. Although they have yet to take over MTV, you can already find their music in some popular skate and snowboard videos. They’ve become the rage in underground music and now Bamp Project is bringing them here to Maui. You may have already seen some flyers or the ad within these pages displaying the skull and cross axes. “People are getting the impression that it’s going to be a rock show,” said promoter Aubry Boutin. “These guys are definitely hip-hop. So some people may be surprised but I’m sure they’ll have a great time anyway.” I agree. I already dig their sound and expect it to be a rad and rowdy show. Everybody who’s anybody is going to be there. Which means I’m going. Tickets: $20. [HEIDI KING]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos
The Prophet Friday, 7 p.m., at Maui Booksellers, Wailuku. [STAGE] Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet is an incredibly inspirational work that is incredibly difficult to memorize. But that won’t stop Maui’s own Felix Nacson, who’s been moved to action by this timeless classic. He’ll be acting out the tale of a prophet who wanders around the desert on his life’s journey. The prophet wants to give to mankind but, as wandering in the desert goes, he has nothing to offer but his wisdom. So when he’s asked a question from a desperate soul, the prophet delivers—with his gift of gab. He then dishes it out on everything from marriage and family to work and pleasure. The book has inspired many and hopefully, the reenactment will inspire Broadway. $12. For info, call 2449091. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]
THURSDAY
The Beachfest Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. at Paia Bay [SURF] My mama always told me, there’s no better time for a surf competition than two days after Thanksgiving. There’ll be the usual divisions on Saturday: menehune, juniors, men’s and women’s open. And on Sunday: drop knee open, stand up open, freestyle surf and body surfing open. The entry fee ($20 by Friday, $30 on Saturday) will get you a contest t-shirt, plate lunch and hello, the chance to play. Plus, it’s put on by the fine folks of Paia Youth and Cultural Center—you know, that nonprofit org on the beach that does good things for kids and our community, like building Stonewave Skate Park and their latest innovative and entirely cool Video Production Program.

The Hinterlander Belly Dance Saturday, 7 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel [MUSIC] When it comes to wines, I’m a blend girl. I think the Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cab Franc/Petite Verdot blend of a Chateau Senejac Bordeaux is simply divine. And when it comes to nighttime entertainment, I like to mix it up, too. That’s why this wine bar’s birthday ode to one of its own blended girls, Adrianne, will feature the beautiful clash of Middle Eastern belly dancing with the not-entirely-of-this-earth folk rock with an artsy edge music of Hinterlander. Mmm… delicious!
The Nutcracker Saturday, 2 & 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Castle Theater [BALLET] It’s the holidays—that special time of year reserved for compulsory consumption and free-flowing guilt. But it’s also time for lovelier things, like cranberry sauce and Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker.” Ballet Hawaii’s second annual performance of it on Maui will feature dancers from San Francisco, Maui and Oahu, and staging by Pamela Taylor-Tongg. It’s a time-honored tradition to see this classic production, and far better than passing out on the couch from too much tryptophan. Tickets: $20, $25, $35 ($10 discount for kids 12 & under). Call 242-7469.
The Bailey Benie Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Bailey House Museum, Wailuku [FUNDRAISER] This is an all-day benefit concert for the Bailey House Museum impressively featuring Uluwehi Guerrero, Lei’ohu Ryder and Richard Ho’opi’i. There’ll also be hula dancers, arts and crafts, free tours, food and a silent auction. Just bring your low-back chair or blankie and chill. Sounds sweet, don’t it? Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 the day of—call 244-3326 or visit www.mauimuseum.org for more info.

The Ice Harvest is a poor man’s cross between the Cohen brothers’ Blood Simple and Fargo, with a sprinkle of atmosphere copped from The Ice Storm, albeit at Christmas. It’s an anti-Christmas black comedy for every card-carrying Grinch.
The Ice Harvest
★★★★★ Rated R/88 mins.
Set in the wicked cold temperatures of a Wichita Falls Christmas Eve, the movie kicks off with a barely glimpsed successful heist of $2,147,000 in cash by an unlikely duo of incompetent thieves played by John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton’s laid-back pornographer character Vic advises crooked mob lawyer Charlie (Cusack) to act “normal” while he (Vic) keeps their loot safe until the next morning, by which time the overnight freezing rain will have sufficiently thawed for them to escape on a morning flight to an undisclosed tropical locale. Charlie predictably falls prey to his own insecurities and telegraphs his guilt to everyone he encounters as he bounces between strip clubs like a bee collecting pollen. John Cusack heats up his character’s vulnerability to a carbuncle over his misguided affection for a wily stripper named Renata (Connie Nielsen—The Hunted). When he isn’t making plans for Renata to run away with him, Charlie does some holiday family visiting with his alcoholic best friend Pete (comically played by
Oliver Platt), who has done Charlie the favor of marrying Charlie’s ice queen ex-wife. One particularly funny gag has Charlie assisting Pete in recovering a testicle kicked into Pete’s “body cavity” by the boyfriend of a female bartender that Pete verbally insulted in his inebriated state. Oliver Platt steals the movie with his take-no-prisoners comic approach to pratfalls and colorful verbal ramblings. Platt performs a seemingly impossible task of making you like him in spite of his horribly offensive behavior. Director Harold Ramis (Caddyshack) doesn’t provoke enough variety in tempo to make the script’s pitch black punchlines pay off as much as they should. The movie also suffers from some miscasting of secondary characters that hinders the comedy just when it should ping off of the screen like a pinball bouncing between bumpers and bells. A recurring subplot has an incompetent Wichita policeman (T.J. Jagodowski) repeatedly catching Charlie at inopportune moments, before letting him off the hook so that Charlie will put in a good word for him with the local mob boss. Jagodowski is too lax to milk the pregnant scenes for their comic potential and you can’t help wonder about the list of comic actors who could have done so much more with the role. This is a holiday movie for the have-nots and the I’m-nots, who know that ice is the only thing in the world that is what it’s cracked up to be. Sure it’s a flawed premise that two desperate thieves would wait to leave town after a robbery just because the streets are frozen, but somebody’s got to visit Wichita strip clubs on Christmas Eve. Don’t worry ladies, he DOES take his shirt off. Though I haven’t seen a trailer for this one, I can already give it five stars with complete confidence. 134 min. Running around wild in their bathing suits, they must work together to escape disaster. 110 min. (GP) JARHEAD - (R) - War, Drama - Jake Gyllenhaal plays a thoughtful, ruthlessly introspective, U.S. Marine Corps sniper sent to help kick Iraq out of Kuwait during the first Gulf War. Jamie Fox plays his Corps-loving lifer sergeant. Will they die? Will they kill? And most importantly, what the hell are they doing over there? Based on the 2004 memoir of the same name. 115 min. (AP) LEGEND OF ZORRO - (PG-13) - Action-Adventure Now that Zorro has fought and won the battle over California he faces his biggest challenge… marriage. Zorro must try to keep the promise he made to his wife to give up his secret identity and lead a normal life, meanwhile the threat of danger from bandits is more real than ever. Hopefully the married life hasn’t dwindled the sexual tension between these two. That’s the best part. 126 min. (GP) SAW 2 - (R) - Horror - I love a good mind screw. When I watch a thriller, I’m disappointed when I can figure out the ending before it plays out. So when a movie keeps me guessing until the end and then throws me a curveball, I am thoroughly impressed. The first Saw not only did that, it made me wet the bed. Really—my housemate doesn’t let me watch scary movies late night anymore. In the second Saw, the bad guy has eight people in a room—let the mutilation and mind games begin! And I’m going to buy plastic sheets. 93 min. (HK) WALK THE LINE - (PG-13) - Drama - Joaquin Phoenix stars in this look at the rise of the rebellious music icon Johnny Cash. Reese Witherspoon plays June Carter, the love of his life. Think Ray, but country. 135 min. (Anthony Pignataro) ZATHURA - (PG) - Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Kids - Think Jumanji, only instead of Robin Williams you have a house floating through outer space. Pretty routine stuff really: kids play board game, then said board game sends them on a wicked space adventure. No, really. I used to play Stratego—I can relate. Stars a bunch of kids I’ve never heard of and Tim Robbins. 95 min. (AP)

The USO Hollywood Canteen Spending an evening in the 1940s for charity around but thankfully had my badge and press hat waiting for me at the door. While the big band played in the dance hall, servicemen mingled with Janes in silk gowns and white gloves, their hair pressed in huge curls tucked under pins and hats. A slick zoot suit walked by with his moll, while another glammed-up tomato showed off her gams in tap shorts and stilettos. I passed all the guys and girlies in glad rags and found the gin mill. It was next to a table serving champagne flutes with cubic zirconias in the bottom of each glass. For 35 bucks a pop, you might get the glass with the real diamond, valued at over $5,000. “Listen baby, I don’t have a lot of cabbage,” I said to the barkeep. “I’m a little low on the berries, if ya know what I mean. Just toss me a bourbon, neat. I’ve got some chinning to do.” Then Kate Smith, a fine canary acting as the dinner bell, sang “God Bless America.” She was a real torcher, that one. After the chow down, I met the butter and egg man, Marc Tolliver—the night’s Event Chair and producer, as well as Club Service
It was Saturday night, Nov. 19. The boss man had a job for me that I couldn’t refuse. “Lookie here, kid,” he said. “I want you to cover that Hollywood Canteen benefit over at the King Kamehameha Country Club in Waikapu. It’s a 1940s party so wear somethin’ nice, will ya?” Duck soup, I thought. So I shined myself up like I was going to Paris, hopped in my boiler and left. The red-carpet entrance was flanked by guys and gals oohing and aahing at the attendees. Flash bulbs sparked as various cats and kittens looking like Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Fred Astaire and Carmen Miranda primped and posed in front of the paparazzi. I blew by in a hurry and began looking for the dame in charge. “Hey, excuse me, doll,” I said to the broad doling out fake liberty bonds as tickets. “Have ya seen Tracy?” Tracy Edelhertz, of Pink Diamond event planning, was the party planner and my go-to girl for the evening. She wasn’t
officer for the Kihei-Wailea Rotary. I asked him to give me the goods on the event. “I want people who lived in that time period to feel as though they were back in 1942,” Tolliver said. “And the younger people like us to feel like we’re on a movie set.” In the hallway leading to the cocktail lounge were booths selling wares like makeup application, soaps and plant seeds for the fundraiser. Behind one—the Kissing Booth—was a real sweet-looking chippy and some kid gettin’ goofy with a horn. For all I know it coulda been Lana Turner and Harpo Marx. A few feet away, at the live auction, a wisecracker bellowed out the dibs on local artwork while a tuxedoed gink walked around, displaying the paintings in question. “You’d do a helluva job as a cigarette girl, Dick!” said the auctioneer. I was just about ready to blow the joint when I noticed a young man in a suit with the press hat—another newshawk like me. He approached before I had a chance to down the rest of my eel juice and breeze off. “So what’s your take?” he asked. He shook the ice in his glass like keys on a jail warden’s chain. “Good turnout,” I said. “The dames look swell. I’ve talked to a few birds and they all have nothing but great things to say about the shindig. But I can’t seem to crab an angle.” “Yeah,” he said. “My game is to just sit back and observe—get a feel for the place, you know? And then move in.”
What a dish! “Nice plan, toots,” I said. Then curiosity got the best of me. “Say, what paper do you work for?” “Oh, me?” he said. “I’m a chef, not a reporter. I’m just wearing the hat.” The Kihei-Wailea Rotary’s USO Hollywood Canteen raised a lot of dough towards the Maui Food Bank, the Kihei Boat Ramp, Iao Theater Restoration and Maui Public School drama departments. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) Meat on the bone, the crackle of fire—cooking at the beach is one of your favorite things. Maybe, if you have the time, plan a trip to La Perouse Bay and be with your friends and the ocean. Just imagine the fun of waking up and the first thing you see is forever over the bluest ocean imaginable. It’s time for you now, Capricorn, to not be lonely but to organize an event, lightening that mood just a little. Let go and forgive, you will feel the divine virtue of love.

You move across the river light as a feather, like a mountain lion, placing your feet carefully on the dry rocks. Naked, you sit in the cold water of the Iao Valley, cradled by the mystic green jungle. The truth behind rejuvenation is a secret from Mother Earth. Take a trip into the jungle this week, Aquarius, but be careful. Watch your step and watch the colors collide into a puzzle of sound and smell. And yes, guava seeds do cause constipation.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Dedicated
Awakening early, the sun bursts white yellow alien light through the giant clouds of Maui. Like the sun, you are exempt from all the problems of the people around you. Their sadness that carries on will one day see the light that shines like the sun in the morning, we hope. But until then, it is important to not lose patience and be solid. Be the love that you are and stay true to the path of the middle way, being selfless right now will help a great deal. Understand the complication.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Like a mountain’s fresh snow, or the spots on a newborn baby bull, making everything seem magical will not be easy. But some things are. Some moments in your life, you will be amazed at the wonders of the world that appear right before your very eyes. Listen to your dreams tonight, the hidden scroll underneath the Buddha holds a picture for you to see. This new vision will bring a positive insight to your next important move.
Passion for Freshness Hospitality Director
Ideal candidate must have good communication and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office. Responsibilities include: managing the greater team; placing sales calls to concierge desks and local business community; coordinating special events such as wedding receptions and banquets; and participation in hospitality training with the front of the house staff. $15.00/hr.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) Ever living, ever loving, Gemini, tomorrow and yesterday—today is just another day to feel your weight on the ground as gravity holds you there. Your Gemini soul is spinning through space, the universe, infinity and beyond the beginning. The flowers reflecting moonlight, the beads of water sliding down the petals mirror your beauty in your new friend’s eyes. Winking is totally in! A Sagittarius will bring good news.
CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) Have you ever seen the movie Like Water For Chocolate? Your true water inhibitions of yin energy are pulsing strong lately. It could lead you to trouble and overdoing it this week, so don’t forget to do your yoga in the morning. Breathe in deep and exhale the sound, “ahhhhhhhhhhh” as long as you can and feel the pure raw energy of being alive. Look for a Virgo for support and inspiration.
Servers Must have a minimum of five years experience with good knowledge of food and wine service.
LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21)
Host Persons
The smell of smoke lingers in the air from the burning cane. Some things in life are for the good and some things are unchangeable, rain or shine. Whether or not we become upset with the ways of the giant corporations that so delicately pollute our lives, it’s totally unpredictable. Some people can’t stand it, some don’t give a rip—what can you do? Don’t get too fired up, Leo. One day we will all live together in harmony, after the bird flu is over.
Must have good hospitality and communication skills, starting at $10.00/hr.
Pastry Chef
Minimum of three years hands on experience.
VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22)
COME TAKE A PEAK!
Have you ever tried real estate? Working through the subconscious, opening the doors and breaking down the defenses to let in the green light of “yes!” Yes! I’ll take it! It’s exactly what I’ve always wanted! If through your stem of the fifth dimension you can predict what your customer wants, it’s a sure thing. Keep working on the finish line, and it will appear.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) Before you start on the trail to the top of the mountain, there are certain supplies necessary for a more comfortable adventure. No need for a list right now, I think you know the essentials. But how about expressing your finesse, Libra? This week, go all out at a dinner party and blow ‘em away with your creative talent for laughter and amazingly bright ambience. Decorate, try some new colors, red wine, candles—you can handle the rest. Open heart, open mind.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) Holding onto the past in new relationships will prove to be a setback for you, Scorpio. One person’s reaction might be completely opposite of yours, so now what are you going to do? The unconditional love and respect that shines between you and your friends is what keeps people together, forever. Relax! This is your grace, no need to erase yourself from craving satisfaction. That crazy connection of friends and lovers is a good thing, if honesty is always appreciated and listened to.

Oh, Sailor Man!
THE
INSIDER
Raise your sail one foot, and you get 10 feet of wind. – Chinese proverb It was a Sunday afternoon and I was restless. So I rallied Sasha to head up to Makawao with me and check out the jazz at the Mana’o Radio benefit at Casanova. Only I suggested we first grab a quick margarita—just one—at Polli’s Cantina. Polli’s is an interesting place. Sure, they serve Mexican food and all, but I prefer their cozy bar. And considering that just a few nights prior I had spent some time at a popular upscale joint in Lahaina where a friend accused me of being an unapproachable snob and a coked-out acquaintance demanded to know my thoughts on anal sex, I was looking forward to the downhome gentility of Polli’s friendly Upcountry patrons. The bar was full when we walked in but two gentlemen immediately offered their seats. One of them, Danny, ordered our drinks from Bernie the bartendress. That’s when the OOPS pack came out—uh, that’s disposable panties made from that blue hospital material generally found on the crinkly garments you change into for examinations. Yeah, so of course, Sasha put them on her head. That’s also when I met The Sailor, a charming man who said he’d been on Maui for 35 years. He was sitting to my right. “I’m happily married but you can get a hall pass,” said The Sailor. “You know, if you wanna come up and visit, or make love four times a year.” He complimented Sasha on her lovely blue eyes—they matched the disposable panties on her head—and proceeded to squish his nose with his finger. “Look, I can see both sides of my face with either eye,” he said, then demonstrated. He told us how he broke his nose three times—once during a fight, the only time he’s ever been beat up, on his way to get a pizza. But he first broke his nose when he dove off a three-meter board into a swimming pool and landed on his friend’s head. “It always hurts most the first time,” he said. Then another guy ambled up to the empty stool next to Sasha and hesitated. “Go ahead, sit down,” she said. “I don’t bite… hard.” “Yeah, she does,” said the quiet young man on crutches two seats down. Clearly, I had no choice but to take notes, albeit discreetly under the bartop. Still, The Sailor was intrigued and tried in vain to read my scrawl. “Are you writing a book?” he asked. “Or are you a narc?” I just laughed and told him maybe it was both. “Well, I’ll tell you everything I know,” he said. “That’ll take about a second and a half! Wanna wrestle when you stop writing?” He turned to his right, chiding a young guy he said was drinking too slow. “What about you?” the guy said. “Your drink’s looking like a lava lamp.” “I’m just here for the companionship,” responded The Sailor. The Sailor said he was raised in a Catholic household and that he was one of nine children. He said his parents used “the rhythm method.” “Yeah, they told us, ‘All your brothers and sisters were born with a lot of rhythm.” He was on a roll and had the whole bar rapt. “You know what I read in Cosmopolitan?” he asked. “Eatin’ ain’t cheatin’! That’s the problem Clinton had, anyway.” Then he raised a glass to toast everyone. “Okole maluna! That’s ‘Bottoms up,’” he said. “Or ‘Up your ass,’ depending.” “I love you, [Sailor],” said Bernie, chuckling. “I love you, too, darlin’,” said The Sailor. The Sailor turned back to me and tried again to read my notes. “Just remember,” he said. “It’s not the end, it’s the journey. It’s like having babies or being an entrepreneur; you never know what you’re getting into. And everyone will tell you, you can’t.” Then he looked at his drink and sighed. “Oh, to be young and resourceful,” he said. “It’s all about the extended vernacular,” said Danny. “You know what that means?” “Hey, I play Scrabble,” said The Sailor. Another man walked in and sat at the end of the bar. He looked over at me and smiled. “I have fond memories of you,” he said. “La Perouse, sparks flying from your Jeep coming over the rocks at night…” The Sailor interrupted and grabbed my arm. “You know my whole life story and I don’t know a thing about you,” he said. “What’s your name?”
