WE ARE PLEASED TO INTRODUCE The Exchange WHO GAVE: John F. Lehman WHO RECEIVED: U.S. Senator
Daniel Akaka DATE: Aug. 25, 2006 AMOUNT: $2,000
In the 1960s while in college John Lehman was a member of the right-wing Young Americans for Freedom. From 1981 to 1987, he served as Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of the Navy. He also reportedly took part in the infamous 1986 “Tailhook scandal,” whereby numerous naval officers partied a little too hard with strippers and hookers—and allegedly sexually assaulted at least one female officer—at an annual aviators’ convention. But by 1987 then Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger, tired of Lehman’s constant bureaucratic squabbling, unceremoniously sacked him (Lehman reportedly found out he was toast by turning on the television). Then he disappeared into the private sector until 2002, when he became a member of the 9/11 Commission. Today he’s the founding partner of J.F. Lehman and Co. as well as a member of the Hawai`i Superferry board of directors. The proposed Superferry will carry passengers and military vehicles between Oahu and Maui and is scheduled for a summer 2007 launch. It’s been exceedingly controversial, most notably for the company’s repeated insistence—backed by the courts—that it didn’t have to do any sort of environmental review. The Superferry looks to be a done deal, but that hasn’t stopped the always cagey Lehman—and eight of his partners, five of whom are also Superferry directors—from giving Akaka $12,000 this year.

This goes out to the guest who “lost” his “purse” at the big Wailea resort a few weeks ago. Why did you find it necessary to throw the pole over the front desk to make a point that you are a freak who needs counseling? We all knew that to begin with. Or did you just want the staff to confess that they did in fact steal your bag? Because that didn’t happen, which even you had to admit later when we found it at the pool… exactly where you left it! Hotel management should have had you arrested, but they didn’t. Guys like you shouldn’t come to Hawai`i—you just can’t handle it. Should you be foolish enough to return, just watch your mouth because you’re liable to find some locals who will deal with your issues very differently than we did. Anyway, thanks for leaving, so I can finally relax now.

LC guys get to go to workshops, conferences and training seminars, sometimes in exotic locales. According to the recently released LC Annual Report, commissioners, board members and staffers got to take six trips—most expenses paid—in fiscal year 2006. First off was the 19th Annual National Liquor Law Enforcement Conference in Tysons Corner, Virginia. From Sept. 7-10, 2005, LC Supervising Investigator Richard Isaacs got

the privilege to attend lectures on “Intelligenceled Liquor Enforcement: Using Data to Analyze and Solve Compliance Risks” and “Staying on the Road to Effective Alcohol Law Enforcement.”
Regional Conference of State Liquor Administrators. Included on the agenda: “the regulation of formats and packaging of new products from jellos to mists.”
The Annual State Liquor Investigator’s Workshop took place September 28 and 29, 2005 at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa. Eight LC Officers attended that one, and undoubtedly took a lot of notes during discussions ranging from “Best Practices” to “Ethics” to “Noise.”
Who could forget the magical National Liquor Law Enforcement Association Training Academy, held in Salt Lake City, Utah in May of this year? Rookie LC Investigators Chad Gardanier and Gene Silva attended this one, in where they learned to “address concerns and solve problems that may occur.”
Then there was, of course, the big state of Hawai`i conference in October 2005 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Big Island (see “The Royal Treatment,” Dec. 2, 2005 for more on which LC personnel attended and what they expensed). There they took part in such discussions as “Interstate Wine Sales” and “Stay Alive from Education.”
And the 72nd Annual National Conference of State Liquor Administrators took place in June 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts. There LC Director Franklyn Silva and a few staffers got the very latest on “An Appropriate Legal Drinking Age,” “Liquor Hearings—Trials, Tribulations & Ethical Dilemmas” and “Toward Liquor Control—Revisited.”

NOT SO SWEET DEAL In the highly competitive, supercharged business climate that is Maui, it’s not enough for a corporation—especially one like Alexander & Baldwin—to simply advocate for better, more rational policies. There comes a time when it must use its corporate power and influence to better this island, nation and even world. For pretty much the last decade, A&B—which owns Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar, one of the most famous and powerful sugar growers in the nation—has coyly dropped hints in various newspaper articles that it wouldn’t mind if the massive sugar subsidies handed out by the federal government were to go away. For the ostensibly free-trade Republicans who have run the federal government for the last decade, this should have provided them the necessary cover to dump the subsidies. But no. And now, according to the Nov. 27 issue of The New Yorker, our sugar subsidies are hindering this nation’s attempts to get more energy efficient. It’s all about ethanol, a biofuel far cleaner than petroleum gas. The problem is that we currently derive ethanol from corn, which isn’t in itself energy efficient. It would be far more efficient to derive ethanol from sugarcane, but our current sugar subsidies have made that product prohibitively expensive to simply dump into a fuel refinery. Were A&B more powerful, it could help sweep away the sugar subsidies, ushering in a new sugar-ethanol world of cleaner engines and less pollution.
GOING TO SEED Monsanto rises this week on news that no less a personage than UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recently announced that if biotechnology falls into the wrong hands, the results could be “catastrophic” for the world. “As biological research expands, and technologies become increasingly accessible,” he said, “this potential for accidental or intentional harm grows exponentially.” Now that’s power! COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 22 Looks like there are more problems with the Maui General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC). And why not? It’s got 25 members—too many to allow for chummy, easy consensuses but too few for a raucous convention. The committee—charged with nothing less than deciding what on Maui should get preserved and what should get paved over—has been around since January. It ran into problems during the summer when some pro-development members accused other slow-growth members of not putting a vote to send the Maui County Council a letter asking for a land development moratorium on the agenda (the county’s attorneys eventually nullified the vote, saying it was illegal). Anyway, last night the election of a chairperson and vicechairperson was on the agenda—all legal according to the Sunshine Law and Hoyle—but didn’t get done either because the panel couldn’t come up with a consensus. What did we expect, considering the committee’s make-

up? The slow-growth members—like Dick Mayer and Lucienne de Naie—will always fight the developer shills—Mercer “Chubby” Vicens, Warren Suzuki—and vice versa. And the real work of the committee (actually coming up with the county’s new General Plan) hasn’t even started yet. Why can’t all this island’s boards and commissions be this interesting?
THURSDAY, Nov. 23 Just in time for one of the busier travel days of the year, The Maui News is on hand to tell us that there’s no parking at Kahului Airport. Okay, so there’s parking—1,100 spaces, to be inexact—but they’re taken pretty much all the time these days. “Right now, we’re almost full,” Scott Ishikawa of the state Department of Transportation says in the paper today. “Airport parking is going to be at a premium.” But have no fear! There’s a “contingency plan” to open up an old rental car lot and a grass field for additional parking, should the need arise. And that will allow an extra 100 cars to park at the terminal! Look, I know it’s tough to park at the airport, but it’s tough to park most places on Maui. So in a way not having adequate parking at the airport is a more than adequate way to get tourists acclimated to life on our fair isle. And for you locals out there who have to deal with Kahului Airport parking on a more or less regular basis, take heart in the fact that the rest of Hawai`i’s airports aren’t doing too well either.
FRIDAY, Nov. 24 Guess what every big airport in the state except Kahului is getting? More parking spaces! Today’s Honolulu Advertiser says there’s a big state plan to add a thousand spaces to Honolulu International, 900 to Lihue Airport, 797 to Hilo International, 725 to Kona Airport and zero to Kahului Airport. Honolulu especially will cash in. According to a report by the Economic Momentum Commission report quoted in the paper, the airport will turn into a “state-of-the-art facility with an authentic Hawaiian experience.” Apparently when most people think of authentic Hawai`i, they visualize a bustling terminal lined with jet airliners. I know I certainly do. But look on the bright side—in the next five years Kahului Airport will add an expand-
Hospitals make me sad, too ed ticket lobby, new jet bridges, more gates, new escalators, all new airfield lighting, an improved airport perimeter road and a brand new air-conditioning chiller plant. A new chiller plant! That’s as authentic Hawai`i as you’re going to get!
SATURDAY, Nov. 25 Lame duck Mayor Alan Arakawa surprised no one yesterday when he vetoed the Maui County Council’s new workforce housing law requiring 40 to 50 percent of all new residential developments sell at prices affordable to working class people. According to today’s Maui News, Arakawa’s reasoning was that the new law would discourage builders—who make lots more profit from big, expensive houses than little, affordable ones—from taking on residential projects, though he also said that there are “more than enough” affordable homes getting ready for final approval. I suppose most people—considering that the council approved the law by a vote of eight to nothing and the fact that the mayor’s out of a job in early January—expect an easy override of Arakawa’s veto. And I suppose they’re right, though I believe “most people” also thought that developers would actually build the affordable homes they agreed to build under the old rules that predated the council’s new workforce law.
SUNDAY, Nov. 26 In my opinion, there’s been entirely too

much focus on the negative aspects of President George W. Bush’s visit to Hawai`i last week. Yes, a Honolulu motorcycle cop tragically died of injuries sustained in a presidential motorcade escorting accident that injured two other officers. And yes, person or persons unknown did beat up and rob Bush’s 25year-old acting White House Travel Office director as he strolled through Honolulu’s International Marketplace at 2 a.m. And while that sounds like a lot of tragedy for a visit that lasted barely 17 hours, we must not forget that Bush’s trip here had many positive outcomes. Like the fact that Governor Linda Lingle got to sit next to Bush during dinner at Admiral William Fallon’s (head of U.S. Pacific Command) house. “He [Bush, not Fallon] was very relaxed at night after coming back from Asia,” Lingle said in yesterday’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “It was much more of a social setting rather than a foreign policy discussion, but obviously it came up because we’re all interested in it… We joked about the elections here. I told him he was in all my opponent’s ads.” See? Good times.
MONDAY, Nov. 27 Lots of pissed off residents waving signs and protesting outside the state Department of Health offices in Wailuku this morning over the recent decision nixing Malulani Health’s application to build a private hospital in Kihei, saying such a facility would rob Maui Memorial of personnel and resources. Keep in mind this group is entirely different from the pissed off residents who want a hospital in West Maui. No word on when they’ll picket the state office building.
TUESDAY, Nov. 28 Such good times. Anthony Pignataro has produced numerous movies and television programs, including the enormously unpopular When Celebrities Attack! series. MTW
The small, specialty restaurant Guolizhuang, in Beijing, serves mostly dishes made from various animal penises, according to a September BBC News dispatch, attracting discerning customers who come for the reputed health benefits. Sheep, horse, ox and seal are good for the circulation, the restaurant’s staff nutritionist said, and donkey improves the skin. Tiger, she said, has no particular value to justify its high price, but snake—“two penises each,” she said—is great for potency.
NEW FRONTIERS IN SCIENCE In October, The Washington Post reported the growing movement among psychiatrists to call compulsive buying a separate, identifiable disorder and recounted this 62-year-old “shopaholic’s” therapeutic conversation with herself: “I would say [to the jewelry she felt compelled to buy], ‘You are so beautiful, I can’t live without you, I love the way you sparkle.’ The jewelry would say back, ‘You need me. You look pretty when you wear me.’ I would say, ‘I do need you. I can’t possibly think of being without you. But something has to change. I need to stop this. I can’t afford a penny more.’” The patient said she believes her compulsion stems from her relationship with her mother.
CAN-DO SPIRIT According to 2005 transcripts made public by The Wall Street Journal in September, a British Airways 747 flew its entire 10-hour-plus route from Los Angeles to Manchester, England, even though the pilot knew that one of its four engines had caught fire and burned up 30 seconds after take-off. The pilot surprised the Los Angeles tower by radio-
ing his decision to fly on “as far as we can”— after checking with BA headquarters, which might have been mindful that returning to Los Angeles would have meant dumping $30,000 worth of fuel and possibly incurring $275,000 in European Union fines for the delay. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration initially proposed a fine for BA but recently closed its investigation.
THE NEW NEW ECONOMY In October, London’s Daily Mail profiled Keith Jackson, 57, an engineer for the AquaTec Coatings company in Wales, whose occupation for the last 30 years has been watching paint dry (to gauge its application time). He said the job pays “fairly well” but “can be stressful.”
PEOPLE WITH TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS In October in Cincinnati, lines once again formed well in advance of the grand opening of a Chick-fil-A restaurant, populated in part by out-of-town customers who chase openings around the country much as rock fans follow their favorite groups on tour. As usual, there were tents, sleeping bags, lawn furniture and portable generators in evidence. “We’ve been planning it for two weeks,” said a 24-year-old woman from New Richmond, Ind., who was there with her grandmother. The first 100 in line received coupons worth $260.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Peggy Sue Hesskew, 44, was arrested in Kerrville, Texas, in November after she made a down payment to a hit man (actually, an undercover police officer) for a contract on her ex-husband. She made the contract even though the Kerrville Daily Times had reported the day before that police were on the lookout for a woman who had been asking around town for hit men. “You don’t get the paper?” asked the magistrate when she was arrested. “I was out of town,” she said. At nine o’clock one recent Saturday morning a small group of people were milling about in a garage in Pukalani. They were at the home of Hans Schopen, drummer for Khrinj, the longest-running heavy metal band on Maui. And they’re preparing to shoot a video for their new song, “Demonize and Degradate.” Soon two other members of Khrinj arrived—the lead guitarist, John Meyer, and rhythm guitarist/lead vocalist, Cayce Almason, who talked about the band’s impending move to the mainland. He said he’s looking forward to being able to drive for more than a couple hours and get a variety of gigs instead of playing the same venues over and over again. The band’s youngest member, Almason has a dry sense of humor with a heavy-lidded, deeply philosophical, deadpan delivery and a lot of theories. And then he gets an idea. He begins enthusiastically telling the videographer, Randy Mills, about a part he envisions in the video where his character is a dictator addressing a crowd, trying to convince them another people are evil. “We just need a podium and a microphone stand,” Almason says. “Um, I didn’t really plan for that,” Mills says. Meyer—wearing a Rhapsody T-shirt, black fingernails and facial hair reminiscent of Anton LaVey, his black hair flowing freely—is possibly the quietest, gentlest member of the band. Yet he is asking where his crownof-thorns might be. “Hey, did anybody bring a black trench coat?” he asks. An hour later, Meyer is manning the blender. But instead of piña coladas or some likewise cocktail, he is blending “glerp”—a water-gelatin mixture generally used in the garden for retaining soil moisture. The desired effect is a Ghostbusters-esque slime the crew will later use to cover the walls. Two hours pass and Ian Horneman, the bassist and most hilariously outspoken member, still hasn’t arrived. He’s stuck at his girlfriend’s house in Lahaina, somewhat put-off by the decision to meet at such an early hour. By now, the glerp fills an entire trashcan. Around 11 a.m., Horneman meets the entourage in Kula at the video shoot set, which is located on a large piece of property offering rolling green hills and an array of abandoned World War II army bunkers. After everyone helps to unload video and band equipment, Schopen— whom the rest of the band calls their “go-getter”—assists the crew flinging glerp on the walls inside of a bunker. Then they cover the solitary window with a man-sized metal canister and lay carpet on the ground underneath the drum kit and an amp with a sticker that reads, “If only closed minds came with closed mouths.” The sound engineer tests the decibel level of the playback recording. Mills fusses with a light bulb that is dangling from a line through a hole in the cement ceiling. “I brought plenty of light bulbs, too,” he says to Schopen. “So you can smash some of ‘em.” Meanwhile, Horneman and Meyer sit on a rusted trough outside, and Almason ties his dog to a eucalyptus tree. “You ever seen a koala bear?” Horneman asks. “They’re so cute! Vicious, though.” Then he stands up, flipping a log over to reveal soft earth and a legion of bugs scurrying away from the exposure to light. “Little worlds!” Horneman says excitedly. Then he sighs. “I need to get off this rock.” Mills signals the band to come inside. He’s ready to begin shooting. “Where’s the make-up, the hair people?” Horneman asks. “Where are the fluffers?” He laughs, then half-mumbles to no one in particular. “I just want to go to a place where there are fluffers.” Talk soon turns—as it often does these days—to the bands’ upcoming exodus from Maui. Meyer discusses the resistance the band has received PHOTOS: KIRSTEN GUENTHER

over the years from particular island venues, and why the band has persisted to play public gigs and all-ages shows for so long. “One of the reasons is it gives kids something to do instead of going to see a movie or drink in the cane fields,” he says. “Over there [on the mainland] people will come hear you play because they like the music,” Horneman says. “Not because it’s just something to do.” “I think we should throw all of our equipment over the cliff in retaliation!” Almason says suddenly. “In retaliation of what?” Horneman asks. “Of something… uh, that should be retaliated,” he says. Khrinj began in early 1997. With the exception of Schopen—who moved from Virginia Beach to Maui in 1990, as a freshman in high school—the burgeoning metal musicians were raised for the most part in Upcountry’s small, quiet community. Meyer befriended Schopen in St. Anthony High School, and the two started playing together in a band called Gristle. Through these gigs, they met Horneman, who had gone to school with Almason’s older brother. It wasn’t until years later—after Gristle disbanded—that Horneman and Almason began jamming with Schopen and Meyer, along with a lead vocalist who was soon— somewhat reluctantly—replaced by Almason. The group has since played extensively on Maui, with a few shows on Oahu, and has garnered a steadfast local following. Part of the band’s appeal, aside from their well-regarded musicianship, is the tight bond the members have maintained with each other over the years, as well as with their fans. As a band, Khrinj is a cast of mismatched characters who challenge and complement each other’s varying musical interests. As individuals, they are as different from each other in temperament and personality as they could be. But musically, they simply fit. Inside the army bunker video set, Mills gave a brief rundown of how filming will go. During playback, Mills wants the band to actually be playing their unplugged instruments with Almason singing—not lip-synching—to capture the vein-popping energy of a live performance. “I should let my hair down but I did that for the last
[video], hunh?” Almason asks, wearing a camouflaged do-rag and long pigtails fastened by studded leather straps. “It is better for headbanging.” “So third beep or second beep?” Hans asks of the playback cue telling him when to begin drumming. As the tape rolls, the dangling light bulb is being pulled in and out of view by crew on the roof of the bunker, creating an eerie flash in front of Almason’s face. “It’s making me nauseous,” Almason says. “This would be great for a zombie movie.” “Looks good, guys,” Mills says. “More cowbell!” the sound guy says. A cacophony of noise erupts as players test the acoustics between takes. Mills whistles for everyone’s attention. “Okay, you ready?” he asks. “So am I going against the track or Hans?” Almason asks. “So when he goes off, I gotta kung fu my kung funess back?” “That’s right,” Mills says, smiling. “Your kung fu-ness.” Playback begins and the musicians almost immediately lose footing. Schopen misses a beat then Meyer stops singing his back-up parts. Mills cuts filming. “You’re gonna have to turn it up, dude,” Horneman says. “We’re getting lost.” “Yeah, let’s move the speaker over here,” Mills says, who then instructs Almason to stand further back. “Why don’t I stay to the left so you can see Hans?” Almason asks. “Well, I can still see the drums,” Mills says, who then gives specifics to the lighting guy on the roof. The sound guy asks about the delay, and gives a test run. “You ready?” Mills asks. “Better? Louder?” Playback resumes but shooting is cut immediately. Schopen forgets the three-beat start. They begin again. During filming, Mills motions to Almason to move back but Almason’s eyes are closed. Mills stops rolling. “I can’t hear anything at that one part,” Schopen says. “This is like ice fishing for metal heads,” the lighting guy shouts down, as he dips the bulb in and out of the hole. “Okay and… roll playback,” Mills says. Three beeps. Then the combined sound of live drums with prerecorded heavy guitars blast out in the dank, cement room at full throttle. Horneman’s hair covers his face as his head thrashes forward and back. Meyer is hunched over his guitar, methodically fingering silent notes, as his head comes up briefly for back-up
singing parts. Almason’s eyes squint shut, his jaw taut as he bellows his vocals, brows furrowed and mouth wide in impassioned elocution. During non-vocal stints, he turns to face the drums and continues playing guitar. The sound guy stops the recorded music prematurely, confusing the band. “Okay, that was great,” Mills says. “We’re gonna do it again.” Again. “I never felt like a bigger cornhole than right now,” Horneman says of his faux-performance. Then he teases Almason, calling him “Andy Vanilli.” The next take has a strong beginning but the light bulb burns out instantly. “Yeah, that was better,” Mills says, yelling up to the lighting guy. “More motion is better.” “I don’t have to look at the camera, do I?” Almason asks. “Make love to the camera!” Mills says. When shooting begins again, Horneman starts scowling wildly and staring straight into the lens, eyes wide, before resuming his usual headbanging theatrics. The next take, the bulb flickers and dies near the end of the song. “I’m smelling cow shit,” the sound guy says. “We’re gonna get mad turd disease in here.” “Okay, we’re gonna do one more wide shot like these and then we’ll do close-ups,” Mills says. Finally, on this take, there are no problems. Although by now, the glerp on the walls is drying. “Good job,” Mills says. “Let’s take five.” After the break, Mills continues filming. Almason’s close-up shots are first, and his performance doesn’t change even though the camera is now inches away from his face. Mills tilts his lens towards Almason’s guitar, then aims towards Meyer’s face on his backing vocal parts. “Good job, guys,” Mills says. “We’re gonna do it again from the beginning.” It’s now 4:15 p.m. and Schopen’s girlfriend—the band’s official photographer—asks if she can take a few stills outside while it’s still daylight. Halfway through the shoot, Horneman starts playing with the dog. Almason hides out on a branch in a tree with his girlfriend as Ross, a friend of the band, shows up just to hang out. The video shoot filming recommences at 5 p.m. with

more close-ups of Meyer, now with dirt covering his face from frolicking outside. The band still practices three times a week for a couple hours and have done so, for the most part, since their inception nine years ago. But with the increasingly imminent mainland move, their Pauwela Cannery studio is mostly cleared out—except for a few random items. The picnic table remains, on which sits a few scattered fliers, a guitar with broken strings, a George W. Bush talking figurine with a carefully drawn Hitler-mustache, and a couple science-fiction paperbacks: The Amber Enchantress and Flight of the Raven. Across from the table is a bookcase with a row of old issues of Playboy and Maxim, a 1969 National Geographic with “Abu Simbel’s Ancient Temples Reborn” on the cover, and a skull ashtray. Posters adorn the walls—Iron Maiden, Primus, Sepultura, Testament, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and a tribute collage to Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott—as well as a fire extinguisher. In the short hallway leading to the soundproofed practice area are various drum parts and cables, amps, speakers and an empty can of Arizona Green Tea. A horned ram skull looms over the doorway to the room. To the side of the entrance is a gentle reminder: “Close Door Behind You Fucks!!!” There is a steady rumble from inside. The guys are intent—all focus is towards the drums—heads bent over guitars, Almason and Horneman are slowly nodding, melody and rhythm in perfect, symphonic unity. Horneman occasionally glances at Schopen during beat breaks. Near the end of the song, Almason stops playing and grabs a can of Coke as he heads out the door. When the song is done, Meyer finally looks up at Schopen and grins sheepishly. “Broke another string,” he says. “That’s his Podagee guitar management,” Horneman says with a snicker. Khrinj has produced two albums—Defense Mechanism in 2000, and Ruin in 2003—and is in the process of wrapping up a third, tentatively titled Rise of the Unnameable. All three recordings are slick, virtuosic affairs—Khrinj complements the sonic power of traditional metal’s heavy guitar-and-drum dominated sound with highly technical, tightly wound layers of intricate melody and intelligent lyricism. But up to this point, the band has never bothered getting a distributor, manager or agent. As such, most copies of the first two albums have been given away to friends and family. “We weren’t as serious as we are now,” Meyer says. “We were gonna sell ‘em on tour but then we never went on tour,” Schopen says. “We went to Lahaina and sold ‘em there,” Almason says. “That’s the extent of it.” “Our new album might do something,” Schopen says. “Randy [Mills] is putting together a DVD for us, and we’re getting a press kit together.”
Khrinj Farewell Concert Saturday (Dec. 9), 5 p.m. at Iao Theater. Tickets: $10. For more info, call 298-7596.
The reason for the sudden shift when it comes to the business of Khrinj is timing. Schopen wants to start school in January—he’s planning on taking welding classes— and is leaving for Colorado in December, with the rest of his bandmates following his lead a couple months later. So will most of Horneman’s family, who also currently live on Maui. The band’s plan is to get a farmhouse and take a few months to finish their album and practice, lining up gigs in the area and anywhere they can. “I’m stoked to leave Maui,” Meyer says. “More opportunity.” “The town we’re moving into—when I visited—there’s a big metal scene there,” Horneman says. “And we’re 45 minutes away from a big city. We couldn’t move to the West Coast and deal with the traffic and people.” “And we’re from here so…” Schopen says. “The hard part is leaving here—it didn’t matter to where. We can do all the things we can’t do here—skiing, see mountain lions, run from bears and stuff. And we’re central so we can travel and gig everywhere. Plus the music is weird [in California].” “We’d get categorized as an old band,” Horneman says. “If we were young and wanted to make it,” Schopen says. “We’d go to L.A.” “We’re not after fame and fortune,” Horneman says. “We just wanna play somewhere and see bands we like. What it comes down to is, there’s nothing here for us. We love all our friends but this island doesn’t cater to anybody unless you’re a reggae band. The bars are just so hared out by the LC [Department of Liquor Control] and fines. Over here it’s such a police state. Look at DeanO’s [now closed Kihei pizzeria and bar]. They got shit for going against the grain and playing punk and metal shows.” “They treated us real nice there,” Almason says. “It really sucks because I grew up here,” Horneman says. “I love Maui but no one likes metal on this island. Not that I don’t like reggae but there’s too much of it.” “Yeah, try to work on a construction site,” Almason says. “You hear the same cheesy-ass stupid fucking songs over and over and everybody sings along!” “We’ve thought about leaving for several years,” Schopen says. “The timing was just never right, for whatever reason. We all just had shit going on here. There was progress and then plateau-ing.” “It is an expensive habit,” Almason says. “Being in a band and having this room since 2000.” Hearing this, Ross, their longtime friend and fan, looks around the room. “It’s gonna be so weird not having you guys here,” he says. Waterfront Deli

Wailea’s home of the true sandwich The Waterfront Deli is a very good place to eat just about any meal of the day that suffers from just two small problems: it’s neither on the waterfront nor an actual deli. Located inside the Whaler’s General Store (!) in The Shops at Wailea (!!), the Waterfront Deli is pretty much just a lunch counter selling “New York Style” sandwiches, salads and cheesecake, as well as items like “All Beef” hot dogs, taro burgers and pizza by the slice. What’s great about Waterfront Deli is you can walk inside and just order a sandwich off the menu like their Big Apple Reuben (hot corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut on rye), New Yorker (roast beef, swiss, lettuce, tomato, Dijon mustard, horseradish) or Soho Vegetarian (tomato, roasted red peppers, lettuce, onion, cucumber, spouts, chedder, mayo) and have a perfectly good, respectable and maybe even healthy lunch. These and other combination sandwiches come complete
with a scoop of potato salad or coleslaw and a dill pickle wedge. But real deli people don’t order off menus. They walk into a deli and ask for a “pastrami on rye” or a “turkey and swiss” and that’s what they get—a slab of sliced meat piled high on the bread of your choice, maybe with some mustard and nothing else (except the pickle— especially if you order pastrami or corned beef, you must have the pickle). And you can do exactly that here—though they charge an extra $3 to “double stuff” your sandwich. Anyway, once you’ve ordered you pick up food at a counter offering napkins, mustard packets, utensils and a basket of hardboiled eggs, sold for 49 cents each. It’s easy to find, right around the corner from the rack holding pre-made sushi and next to the Hawai`i coffee mugs that have people’s names printed on the side. Then you go pay at the cashier in the center of the store. The first time I was there I stood in line behind an older tourist couple paying for a couple bottles of wine
and some bananas while a younger family fidgeted behind me, waiting to buy a beach mat. Of course, once you get your real “New York Style” sandwich or hardboiled eggs or whatever, you’ll probably have to eat it in the most un-New York environment around, which is most likely either one of the little metal tables lined up outside the Whaler’s General or the big fountain that sits a few yards away. And you’ll be surrounded by the usual Shops at Wailea crowd—kids playing around said fountain, older couples eating ice cream from Lappert’s, tourists reading the “Wailea Living” section of the glossy Shops at Wailea store directory (“Being firmly rooted in the community, the company’s agents have played an influential role in helping form design concepts for new developments to serve the combined needs of an evolving
resort/residence community lifestyle…”). Showing up in the early morning for breakfast is also acceptable, when they offer bacon and egg croissants, scrambled egg bagels and a “breakfast combo.” For $3.69 American, you get a big Styrofoam container stuffed with scrambled eggs, tator tots (or rice) and your choice of bacon, Portuguese sausage or links. MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Inspired Hands Saturday-Sunday (Dec. 2-3), 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hui No`eau Visual Arts Center [WOODWORK/ARTS] My friend Dylan will never let me get away with saying this, but I will anyway: I love wood. Have for years. I love its smell. It transports me back to days being raised by a building superintendent/ carpentry hobbyist father. I love the various tones and textures of different woods (my koa Fender Stratocaster is so beautiful that it’s tough to justify hacking away on it). I love wood’s functionality. The fact that humans have figured out how to build just about anything from a fallen tree amazes me. Having zero mechanical inclination only adds to my wonder and respect for competent woodworkers. Having said that, I’m looking forward to the Hui No’eau’s annual Maui Woodworkers’ Guild exhibition (runs through Jan. 14) and faire. The Hui is on a stunning 10-acre estate and is considered one of the top art centers in Hawai`i. This weekend, they’ll be featuring master carpentry works, as well as offering keiki activities and demos in various artistic mediums, and offering many of these crafts for sale, including haku-style wreaths and garlands. There is no cost to attend. Among the woodworks displayed will be fine art furniture, sculptures and vessels. Ah, vessels. Finally, something Dylan can get excited about! Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center is located one mile below Makawao Town on Baldwin Ave. For more info, call 572-6560 or email info@huinoeau.com or check the website at www.huinoeau.com. [COREY NIELSEN]

Thursday-Wednesday (Nov. 30-Dec. 6)
Saturday (Dec. 2), 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater
[FREE MEDITATION TALKS] It isn’t every day you get to listen for free to a “living Buddha” speak about meditation, healing, wisdom and an “enlightened mind.” But for the next week, you can do exactly that because Master Yu Tian Jian, also known as DeChan JueRen, also known as “the 49th Acharya and only living master of the Chinese Hanmi School,” will appear around the island live— and for free! (For more info, check www.LightAwakeningTemple.com) On Nov. 30, Master Yu will speak at Seichi No Ie (111 Kane St. in Kahului) at 6:30 p.m. On Dec. 1, he’ll appear at the Lahaina Jodo Mission— with the band Crazy Fingers!—from noon to 7 p.m. Then nightly from Dec. 2 through Dec. 6 Master Yu will speak at the Unity Church in Wailuku (482 High St.) at 6 p.m. He’ll also conduct a number of workshops for money (prices range from $60 to $1,800). [COMEDY] He’s been making Hawaiians laugh for over 25 years with his TV specials like “All in the `Ohana,” and mixing it up with other comedic greats Frank DeLima—he even replaced the late Rap Raplinger in Hawai`i’s seminal sketch comedy group, Booga Booga. He’s garnered some guffaws in L.A., too, where he did the improv circuit and comedy clubs, eventually working his way to opening for the Beach Boys and Tom Jones—and oh, those pantythrowing blue hairs loved our Bumatai! MAUI TIME WEEKLY
Walkin’ in a Winter Santaland Thursday (Dec. 7), 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Studio Theater
Fun and Reindeer Games Tuesday (Dec. 5), 8:30 p.m. at Hapa’s [COMEDY] Remember those game shows you watched back in the day? Weren’t almost ALL of them about matching answers? There was Family Feud, Hollywood Squares, $10,000 Pyramid and, of course, Match Game. The MisMatch Game, which is a one-night-only deal, is a more risqué, edgy and funny version. Local celebrities join with tourist celebrities to help you re-learn to wet your pants. You’ll see Tony Tripoli (Fashion House) and John Michael Beck (Santaland Diaries) with Dennis Hensley (Kathy Griffin’s D-List) as the host. Watch as the panel or participants try to guess the same answers to fill in the blank questions like, “Britney Spears’ wedding was so white trash. Instead of having flower petals on the floor, she had [blank].” Yes, one of the answers was K-Fed’s DNA smoothie. Cover: $12. [HEIDI KING]
DAY
[COMEDY] John Michael Beck brings to life Crumpet, the unfortunate soul working as an elf in a department store, from David Sedaris’ Santaland Diaries. You know that feeling. The one where you’re working your ass off because it’s the holidays and you have to put up with the crazy children and the agroparents while they choose to displace their angst unto you. Then you’ve got the people that aren’t part of those families and are bitter with jealousy as some become during the holiday season. Or, maybe you don’t know that feeling because you are one of those people. If you’re one of them, stay away—you don’t deserve the joy of quality entertainment. But, if you’re pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down, I hope to see you there. Tickets: $20. To purchase, call 242-7469 or visit www.mauiarts.org. For info, visit www.NeoComedy.com. [HK]

FILMCRITIQUE
BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM
Travelers Beware Vacationers get schooled in nationalist intolerance Riding the current wave of horror movies populated with American travelers preyed upon by torturing crazies, Turistas plays its suspense trump card as the first American film shot entirely in Brazil. Alex (Josh Duhamel) and his sister Bea (Olivia Wilde) are derailed from their sightseeing plans with their friend Amy (Beau Garrett), when their tour bus goes over the side of one of Brazil’s high lush mountains. The trio barely escapes the catastrophe, along with their fellow passengers, but the fate that awaits them is no less shocking.
Turistas
★★★★★ Rated R/89 mins.
A local renegade doctor (Miguel Lunardi) has committed his life to capturing foreign visitors from whom he steals internal organs to give to needy natives. Director John Stockwell (Blue Crush) electrifies the barbed wire horror, from debut screenwriter Michael Arlen Ross, with gut-wrenching suspense that attends the painful trajectory of several characters. After surviving the harrowing bus sequence, our shell-shocked vacation-
ers encounter the distrust of the Brazilian locals when Bea takes a photo of a local child whose father freaks out because he thinks she has sights on kidnapping his young daughter to sell on the black market. The three travelers buddy up with fellow traveler Pru (Melissa George) and British vagabonds Finn and Liam (Desmond Askew and Max Brown) before descending to an idyllic beach equipped with a primitive bar and disco. During an evening of drinking, dancing and sex, the group are drugged and robbed of all of their possessions. Left without shoes and only minimal clothes on their bodies, the unlucky pack earn the wrath of the unpoliced locals when one of them throws a rock at a native boy wearing a stolen hat. Kiko (Agles Steib), an ostensibly compassionate villager, comes to the embattled group’s aid when he offers to lead them through the jungle to a house where they will be safe from the polarized community that wants to kill them. A nine-hour hike through the thick jungle brings the assembly to an underwater passage that provides a claustrophobic environment not unlike the caves in this year’s horror achievement The Descent. Anxiety mounts as the swimmers squeeze between rock walls to catch their breath in pockets of confined air. It’s in these unaffected scenes that the beautiful remote locations take on a doomed and monstrous personality. The problem with Turistas is that the scenes in the film’s violent third act are filmed under such dark conditions, underwater and in a nighttime jungle that the
I hate these cut-rate tours
audience isn’t able to make a necessary emotional connection with which protagonists are fighting for their lives. In a way, it’s a continuity problem that allows the audience to relax some during what could be a considerably more high-strung cinematic experience. Predictably, the house that Kiko brings the throng to is the headquarters and operating room of the evil Dr. Zamora (Lunardi) who steals the movie when he
delivers a blood-curdling monologue of malice while removing the kidneys and liver, sans anesthetic, from a female victim. The Grand Guignol torture scene is notable for its ideologically driven theme, with Miguel Lunardi channeling the diabolical Vincent Price in one of his finer moments. Revenge is in the eye, and hands, of the torturer. Second world survival never seemed so dicey. MTW

Madcap Vaudeville Reviewing The Mystery of Irma Vep, A Penny Dreadful The experience left us breathless. We had no idea of the whirlwind we’d encounter when we stepped into Iao Theater last Sunday, Nov. 26, for a performance of The Mystery of Irma Vep, presented by Maui OnStage. Originally written by Charles Ludlum, the play featured two actors—Tom Althouse and Alexander Cardinalli— in a dizzying and gender-bending eight roles. Afterwards, we discussed what we saw.
The Mystery of Irma Vep Last weekend! FridaySaturday (Dec. 1-2), 7:30 p.m.; Sunday (Dec. 3), 5 p.m., Iao Theater, 242-6969 or www.mauionstage.com. Tickets: $18, $16, $12.
KRISTA SHERER: It definitely was vaudevillian. And I like that they quoted a lot of Shakespeare—as well as “The Raven”—but there was a lot I didn’t get. There were a lot of different types of humor going on there.
SHERER: I actually think I enjoyed it a lot more than you. But I am a closet theater geek. I really love the stage and it is one of the oldest art forms—everything comes from playwriting. I did feel the overacting was a little overwhelming, though. CAMPOS: See, I liked that. When the plot would start to confuse me, the overthe-top acting pulled me back into it. It’s the campiness that won me over! SHERER: I agree with you that the plot was almost too intricate. Their chase scenes were something out of Scooby Doo. And then when they carried out the dummy and “accidentally” slammed it against the wall—it was such simple, playground humor. CAMPOS: Oh, I loved that! I actually thought it was quite sophisticated. SHERER: And I got really confused with that masked ghost-skeleton thing— like, what the hell was that? I got the vampire, the ghost and the werewolf, but I just didn’t know what that other thing was. But I do have to give them thumbsup for a complicated plot with two actors performing eight roles and for compensating with
SAMANTHA CAMPOS: Well, yeah. That’s ‘cause the play was originally written as a satire of several different genres—Hitchcockian mystery, Gothic horror, Victorian melodrama. It was a madcap of styles, really.

the lighting and sound effects, as well as their ability to be so animated. I think they did a fantastic job. CAMPOS: Definitely. I was spellbound by how quickly they changed gears— and costumes—and never broke out of character. It was like they needed absolutely no transition time to be eight different people. Very impressive. SHERER: I do have to say, the extreme flamboyance of Alcazar’s character—while funny, I just felt it was unnecessary. But Lord Edgar was totally captivating, like a mixture of Will Farrell and Ben Stiller with his facial expressions and his accent… CAMPOS: Okay, I didn’t dig that character so much. The accent—it was much too Cary Grant for me. But I very much enjoyed the dramatics of Lady Enid—that jazz hands fabulousness of her mime-tastic storytelling slayed me. SHERER: I did like that there was a
fine-tuned balance between the two actors—they shared the stage, giving each other the room to capture the audience. I found myself drawn into one, and then the other. And I loved the duet they sang with the `ukulele. I thought it was cute. CAMPOS: I loved that too but wondered about the significance. Like, there was just so much going on, you know? What’s next—a dancing monkey? SHERER: Well, anyway, they were highly skillful thespians. I think that’s a good example of what thespians are—they were giving examples of what the art form is. And the tongue-in-cheek dialogue mixed with slapstick physicality was very effective. It was entertaining. And very funny. CAMPOS: You just wanted to say “thespians.” SHERER: I did. MTW

It’s not that you’re stingy, exactly. It’s that you resent overpaying for something you know is available cheaper elsewhere. However, when presented with what you know is a good deal, you’ll part with your cash readily enough. This rationalism extends to your emotional life as well—and that can be just as easily misinterpreted. It simply makes sense to you to weigh options and choose the one that gives you the biggest bang for your “buck.” This week, it might be better to choose a less-than-ideal deal— because it’s a bargain for someone you love.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Meeting new people excites me, in part because of all the stuff they’re likely to expose me to; from artsy stuff like music, books, movies, and so on, to new flavors and experiences that I might never stumble onto on my own. You’d do well to up your curiosity about other people this week. Ask everyone you know: “What are your favorite things?” (I extend that question to you as well. Please send me a list of your five favorite things: sign.language.astrology@gmail.com .) I imagine that at least one of those favorite things you hear about will soon be added to your list of beloved favorites as well.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
So many Aries disdain safety measures. Seatbelts, bike helmets and condoms are regularly shunned. I know you like living life with nothing between you and the world (and its inherent risks), but don’t be stupid. Shit can and does happen. I don’t believe in letting fear rule or limit you. But being the victim of foolhardiness or stupidity is hardly the way to go, either. You can’t protect yourself from pain. Suffering is intrinsic to life. But you can prevent a lot of pointless misery, if you’d just swallow your pride and folly for a while. If you can keep yourself—and, by extension, those who love you—safer, you probably should.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I don’t particularly believe in God or the preposterous theory of intelligent design, but that doesn’t keep me from appreciating the elegance, ingenuity and beauty of the world we live in. Faith can blind people to logic, but conversely, a purely rational, scientific approach to life can rob people of their ability to really see and appreciate beauty and grace. Taureans are generally curiously immune to either extreme; no matter how scientific you become, you are never unable to appreciate gorgeousness when you encounter it, and your faith rarely, if ever, blinds you to rationality. A few of those you know could benefit from walking this elegant middle path. Won’t you share it with them?

What I love about you are all the stupid choices you make. You’re a leap-before-you-looker; that’s part of what makes your life so exciting. But every once in a while the aftermath of your lack of foresight catches up with you, and you have to deal with the consequences of your bad decisions. At these times, you’ll find your allies are understandably reluctant to help dig you out of the hole you dug yourself despite their advice. This week you can avert disaster. That means ignoring your own whims in favor of your friends’ well-established wisdom.
Most Pisceans, whether they admit it or not, spend at least some period of their adult lives looking or longing for someone to take care of them, someone who can help them cope with the sharp edges of harsh reality. Some Pisces find someone willing to play that role, for a time, but most have to learn to deal on their own. What happens, then, when someone comes along and promises to carry some or all of that burden for you, long after you’ve learned to carry it on your own? This week you may be offered something along these lines. What will you decide?

There’s only so much banging against a brick wall your head can (or ought to) take. After a while, you need to let go of your stubbornness, and just accept that the resistance to whatever you’re up to is not going to yield any time soon, and give up in favor of trying another tack. This doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams, just on this particular route to (or manifestation of) them. Back away from the wall. Wait for your head to clear from its latest use as battering ram. Then start looking around for other approaches, and try not to kick yourself for not noticing them earlier. You were busy.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Quit waiting for that damn phone to ring. You’ve got to get on with your life, and have enough confidence to truly believe that anyone who’s not getting on the bandwagon is missing out. You can’t force people to enjoy or appreciate what you’ve got to offer. That’s meaningless, pointless and depressing unless they come to that on their own—and in their own time. Of course, for them, it may be too late. Not for you, though—you’ll have found some new admirers (who really get you) by then.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Leos need structure. Total freedom is highly overrated. You actually need a schedule and routine more than you admit. You thrive when there are rules to bend, break or, yes, obey, boundaries to stretch, stray from, or abide by, and obligations to shirk or come through on. A week or three of absolute liberty is a pleasant vacation. More than that and it’s a restless, unenjoyable limbo. Don’t strive too hard to escape the strictures of your life. Loosen them, maybe—but never forget that resisting them (and using them to harness your strength) is part of what makes you feel alive.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Spontaneity is hard for you. It’s not that you’re inflexible or overly ruffled by the unexpected. It’s just that you’re so damn busy. Your life is so over-scheduled that being spontaneous means blowing off some important task or pre-arranged meeting; that, in turn, has a domino effect on the rest of your carefully-calibrated life. But what if you built a bit of slack-time into your schedule, to accommodate the unexpected? You can never know when they’ll occur, but allowing for the (very strong) possibility of surprises this week would definitely be a good idea.

The number one complaint I hear about Libras is that some people feel they can’t trust you. I don’t think this is because you guys are especially malicious, or disloyal friends. It’s that you’re obsessed with being nice. This means (quite often actually) telling white lies or simply biting your tongue instead of speaking your mind. Many people appreciate that, I’m sure—but there are those of us who can see right through it. It makes you look dishonest when your words (or lack of them) don’t jive with your vibe. Be aware of your friends who are especially perceptive. With them you ought to either improve your technique, or—better yet—simply be honest, even if it means not being “nice.”
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Don’t let all the resistance you’re likely to experience this week get you down. Take it as a compliment, that so many people have allied against you. They think you’re dangerous—and in this case that’s a good thing, because they’re all kinds of messed up. If you know, in your heart of hearts that what you’re up to is the good and honorable thing to do—and it’s right for you—please feel free to ignore those who oppose you. They’re just plain wrong, and they’ll apologize for their error in judgment after you prove it.

Would it really be worth living in a world without television? – Krusty the Klown Last week I discovered that Hollywood hates me. Look, I’ve never been shy or apologetic about my love for television. I believe that in moderate doses dependent on a balance between cable and network TV, it can be enlightening, inspiring and at the very least—but now more so in the hours between 2 and 5 a.m.—amusing. But I’ve given up. Called it quits. Thrown in the towel on Thursdays, when I had specifically set aside time for my favorite primetime series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. I’m talking about the original, the one in Las Vegas with Grissom and Sara Sidle and the ex-stripper and that hot guy from the Janet Jackson videos, who are all forensic scientists scraping mucus off hotel shower curtains, measuring bullet trajectories and taking blood samples from casino slot machines in order to come to some strange and exciting conclusion of a showgirl murder or accidental midnight buffet eater’s death. Now that’s entertainment. I’ve been watching the CSI series—which has been described as a cross between Quincy and X-Files, two of my old faves—since 2002, when it was the most-watched program on television, and preempted another goodie which I quickly grew quite fond of, Without a Trace. That’s right, another crime show—this time about an FBI missing person unit set in New York City. But where CSI characters have virtually no life outside of their forensics lab, when they’re not on a case the special agents of Without a Trace deal with secret affairs, divorce, Alzheimer’s, addiction and nepotism—and sometimes not even in that order! Oh yes, CSI has been a gateway drug to other shows, as well. Of course I watch CSI New York—that other knock-off Miami CSI I find dull and irritating and doesn’t have Detective Danny Messer—on Wednesdays. Criminal Minds, the crime drama (yes, another—shut up) about FBI profilers from the Behavioral Analysis Unit who track serial killers, precedes it. But I’ve also gotten caught up in America’s Top Model, Bravo’s Top Chef and the new season of MTV’s Real World during commercial breaks. Short Attention Span what? Dude, just pass the remote. But this season Without a Trace has been moved to Sunday nights. And I found this out by being roped into watching the insipid Dancing with the Stars, which has replaced the crime drama on Thursdays. And just to take the pressure off of Thursdays, I was also toying with the idea of watching Medium regularly. Yeah, that’s the one where Patricia Arquette plays a psychic who works for the District Attorney’s office helping him solve cases and such by having really bad nightmares that wake up her affable husband and three kids every night. Sounds crazy, I know, but it’s based on a true story, people! Anyway, they decided to move it to Thursdays this season, too. Whose idea was this monstrosity? Those dweebs in H-town, naturally. They hate me there. Another Monday night show I got hooked on was Grey’s Anatomy after I got tricked into watching last year’s finale, which featured a smokin’ hot heart transplant patient who proposes to one of the doc interns and then dies, leaving her with $8 mill and a broken heart of her own. Meanwhile the hospital throws a prom for the chief’s niece who is dying of cancer and wants to “cash in her V-card,” and another doc intern has to choose between a resident doc called McDreamy and a veterinarian called, uh, McVet. Escapism at its best! But, of course, this season the network heads also thought it would be a swell idea to move it to Thursdays to counter CSI. Those rat bastards. Samantha Campos has issued a warning that her contents are under pressure, and her cap may blow off causing eye or other serious injury. She suggests that you point away from face and people, especially while opening. MTW
