CALLING FOR HELP Carlyle Group-owned Hawaiian Telecom—currently drowning in a flood of customer complaints largely stemming from massive phone billing problems—has decided to buy more than $1 million worth of computer software that it hopes will help. According to a Nov. 28, 2006 press release sent out by Fine Point Technologies, Inc., the new software will “help enhance customer support and smooth the transition of users to new network services.” It will also “allow Hawaiian Telcom to reduce customer support costs [subcontracting out boiler rooms full of customer service reps to handle the torrent of complaints] while enhancing the quality of experience (QoE) realized by broadband and dialup customers.” If that doesn’t make Hawaiian Telcom customers feel better, I don’t know what will. Every once in a while I look over the Maui 10 and wonder how an organization like the Weinberg Foundation made it onto the list. They don’t make huge campaign contributions or deal in hightech or high-value industries. They certainly don’t appear in the news very often. And every time I get close to yanking them somebody goes and gives me evidence that they absolutely must be on the list. In this most recent case, you need only refer to “Top 20 Wealthiest Landowners” list that appears in the November 2006 issue of Hawaii Business magazine. Right there at Number Three—Three!—is Weinberg (which seeks to aid “those unfortunate people who by reason of poverty, disability, failing health and/or advanced age are unable to adequately help themselves”) with its $1.258 billion worth of Hawai`i landholdings. The vast majority of their holdings are on Oahu, but they do own 402 acres of Maui, including the Lahaina Shopping Center, the Lahaina Center, the Kahului Industrial park, the Ka`anapali Shores resort and, of course, that giant vacant lot next to the Lahaina Cannery Mall that’s notorious as a home for homeless people and vagrants.

count of “allow[ing] the consumption of liquor in the area designated for dancing.” They’re pleading no contest to this charge, as well as another alleging the club failed “to ensure that no employee, while on duty, be permitted to consume any alcoholic beverages.”

Drinking and Dancing Don’t Mix There are eight cases on the Dec. 7, 2006 LC Board of Adjudication agenda, an unusually high number probably due to the fact that the panel hasn’t met since Sept. 7. Most are single-count, no contest deals involving minor decoy sting operations. A couple others deal with alleged over-service. But one case, concerning Paradice Bluz Nightclub & Lounge in Lahaina, stood out above the others.

Going after nightclubs in which customers—employee or not—take their drinks onto the dance floor is a unique and signature part of the Maui County Department of Liquor Control. Then again, so is the requirement that all nightclubs in the county tape-off—or otherwise “designate”—their dance floors and then rigorously police the rest of the club to make sure no dancing is

taking place outside the specially designated dancing zone. The reason, of course, is safety—can’t have drinks getting spilled on dancers or dancers blocking aisles and such. Most communities are content to let the local fire department concern itself with such capacity issues, but not Maui. To reiterate: Paradice Bluz is facing up to a $2,000 fine for allowing someone to take a drink onto its dance floor. If that seems excessive in any way, then you obviously haven’t paid much attention to the LC.

AMOUNT: $200

Normally contributions as small as $200 wouldn’t even appear in this space, but considering Tavares’ comments in the Nov. 29, 2006 Maui News about the proposed privately owned and operated Malulani Hospital—and Jencks’ well-established stature as one of Maui’s premier land developers—I couldn’t resist. “I think Malulani Medical Center would be a good thing for Maui,” she said in the paper. And many people—though not state health officials, who nixed the idea back in October—agree. I know Charlie Jencks agrees, because corporate filings for Malulani Health Systems—the local company that will control 20 percent of the proposed hospitals equity (Plano, Texasbased Triad Hospitals, Inc. would hold the rest)— show him as a member of the board of directors. Of course, whether Jencks’ paltry $200 check to Tavares (he’s given a lot more to others) has anything to do with Malulani is difficult to say. His mammoth controversial Wailea 670 project hasn’t exactly been built yet, and Jencks’ bio at the Malulani website lists a host of reasons why he might want to help someone become Maui County Mayor: “President, Maui Contractor’s Association; past Director Maui Public Works; Seabury Hall Board Director; Maui County BSA Council Board & Past President; Board Maui Chamber of Commerce.”

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the idiot near Ukumehame who thought it would be cool to use the ocean as his personal driving range. How can you possibly see this as cool? It is littering, pure and simple. Each little golf ball contains the same amount of plastic as a twoliter soda bottle! What the hell were you thinking? There is enough plastic that ends up in our oceans inadvertently without jerks like you purposely polluting it for your own amusement. Are there not enough golf facilities on Maui? Do you think that because golf is predominantly an affluent white pastime that driving balls into the water somehow makes you any better than the meth-heads who dump their burned-out cars on the beach? Wrong! The only difference between you and the jerks who dump their household trash in the middle of the night is that at least they’re smart enough to commit their crime when no one’s around. You’re a thoughtless, arrogant idiot and you do not deserve to live on this island. Consider yourself lucky that I was late driving a friend to the airport or I would have stopped and practiced a few swings of my own.

And actor Andy Griffith filed a lawsuit in November demanding that the former William Fenrick change his legal name back from “Andy Griffith,” which he admitted he acquired only to help himself get elected sheriff of Grant County, Wis. (he lost). And a man in China’s Fujian province applied to the government in November to sell female sanitary pads under the trademark “Yao Ming,” catching the superstar pro basketball player’s agents dumbfounded at the man’s audacity.

Among the indigenous rituals that survive today in Madagascar is the quinquennial “turning of the bones,” when families dig up their ancestors’ remains, polish them, show them around the village so the departed can see how things have changed, then re-dress and reinter them. Not to partake is to show disrespect, bring bad luck and risk one’s own unsatisfactory afterlife, according to an October Wall Street Journal dispatch from Antananarivo.

Some churches in Canada have begun actively condemning commercial bottled water—except where no other sanitary water is available— either as environmentally destructive or as the commercialization of God’s gift of life, according to a September report in Toronto’s Globe and Mail. At the same time, in Mumbai, India, as many as 1 million Hindus once again this year ritually dunked hand-made idols of the elephant-headed Ganesh,

CORPSES MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN YOU Dead candidates continued to enjoy electoral success, with at least four winning hard-fought races in November. Katherine Dunton tied in an Alaska school board race but, though dead, won the coin toss and was elected. Glenda Dawson won her Texas state House seat, thanks in part to a colorful campaign mailer that went out a month after her death, touting her achievements but making no campaign promises. And Sam Duncan won a seat on a North Carolina county soil and conservation board, which was such a low-key race that even some of his backers were surprised to learn after the election that he had died in September.

THIS WEEK IN WACKY DRUNKS Twice in October, motorists were arrested for DUI after driving up to the security guard house at the nuclear power plant in Braidwood, Ill., by mistake. According to police, Lloyd Kuykendall, 38, drove up and handed the guard $1, thinking it was a highway toll booth; 10 days later, Stanislaw Drobrzawski, 51, tried to align his car with the guard house, thinking it was a gas station pump. And in Des Moines, Iowa, in October, customer Michelle Marie Engler, 45, was arrested for public intoxication at the Big Tomato Pizza restaurant after boisterously demanding to know why her food was taking so long. e like to think of our island’s beaches as our playground. Kicking back on a blanket of warm golden sand while listening to the crescendo of crashing waves seems to dissipate whatever problems we might have into the air like spindrift off cresting white-water barrels. A great deal of Maui’s economy— like mega-resorts and ocean activities—rests on these beaches as well. Even children learn that building castles on sand is risky, and Maui is learning that now. Because of global warming and a host of man-made actions, Maui’s beaches are eroding away at an alarming rate. For more than a decade, Dr. Chip Fletcher, Professor and Chair of the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa has been working to provide valid research to help planners and decision makers understand how to care for and help mitigate beach erosion issues around the state. His research is striking. Between 1949 and 1997, West Maui, Kihei and the North Shore saw erosion rates averaging about one foot per year. That translates into a 20 percent loss in beach width or roughly five linear miles of beach completely lost. Considering environmental impacts—and especially if sea-level continues to rise— Fletcher believes that over the next 25 to 50 years, Hawai`i will see one beach after another disappear until there are only a handful left on each island. “There is no easy or inexpensive solution to this problem,” he says. Derived from coral and seashells, Maui’s sand is a precious natural resource. Broken off the reef from the impact of ocean waves or the munching of reef fish, these calcareous skeletons and shells become golden grains of sand. Taking millions of years to build a reef and the symbiotic ecosystem, sand derived from this source is finite. “Reefs are simply not as prolific a source of sand,” Fletcher says of Maui’s narrow beaches. “Because of erosion, these skinny beaches are starving and are beginning to look anorexic.” Fletcher’s work shows that in West Maui, the average beach

width has narrowed by 25 percent. The greatest narrowing occurred in Alaeloa (38 percent), Honokowai (36 percent), Launiupoko (34 percent) and Hekili (35 percent). Since the end of World War II, West Maui has lost 2.8 miles of beaches, with the worst erosion at Kahana, Honokowai, Wahikuli, Lahaina, and Launiupoko. here are several reasons for the steady disappearance of Maui’s beaches. Hurricanes, tsunami inundation, waves and currents have all contributed to beach erosion. There’s the melting of the Greenland and the West Antarctic ice sheets and the warming of the atmosphere. Rising ocean temperatures are deteriorating Hawai`i’s coral reefs, which support the diversity of marine life and are the source of our lightcolored sand. Then there’s the rise in the sea level. Fletcher says globally, sea level has risen four to eight inches over the past century. “But a pair of satellites that have been mapping the ocean surface for more than a decade and a half have recorded accelerations in the rate of sea-level rise,” Fletcher says. “The latest sea level research in 2006 shows an average increase of global mean sea level to over 12 inches per century from 1993-2005. This rate is more than 50 percent greater than the average rate of the last 50 years.” Human manipulation of the beach—activities like sand mining and shoreline armoring—has also caused a dangerous imbalance in our shoreline’s natural processes. “The effects of rising sea level and coastal erosion do not necessarily threaten an active shoreline if humans do not tamper with the beach,” Maui County Coastal Resources and Shoreline planner Thorne Abbott says. In its natural state, the beach will migrate landward and erode the sandy upland area, says Abbott. Eventually, the sediment that is eroded from the upland will become part of active beach and the beach is maintained. “Unfortunately, man’s actions to save land and private property interrupt this natural process of sand movement, depriving the system of needed

T

sand and creating a deficit in the sand budget,” Abbott says During the 1970’s and the 1980’s, development on Maui’s shoreline burgeoned. Along the West, South and North shores, houses, condominiums, hotels and timeshares began to crowd the coastline. To protect investments from the pulverizing force of the ocean, landowners built seawalls and revetments to try and halt erosion. But this temporary “securing” of the beach has taken place at the expense of the adjacent beaches and communities. “Even in the late 1970’s, government agencies recommended hardening the shoreline to respond to erosion crisis,” Abbott says. “Today, we now recognize that seawalls and revetments can exasperate erosion on sandy shorelines.” urrently, the only means of shore protection activity supported by state, county and federal agencies is beach nourishment. “Placing high quality, low silt, clean sands at strategic times and at specific locations will compensate for a sand ‘short-fall’ when the natural source of the beach’s sand is impounded by structures or its movement hindered by walls,” Abbott says. In other words, nourishing a beach requires more than dumping sand from anywhere onto the shoreline. To assure the health of the reef ecosystem, beach nourishment projects require clean sand similar in color, granule size and chemical make-up to what would naturally be found on the depleted beach. The sand should also be local—imported sand derived from a different source will stress the environment, and could kill the sea life that burrow near the shoreline. Maui has two sources of compatible sand: the inland dunes located off the Central Valley and beach sand that has resettled on the ocean floor. Maui’s inland dunes are considered an easily accessible source of sand. But local concrete companies have largely scooped up these dunes for concrete production. Nearly mined to extinction, this resource now makes up the foundations of new buildings and roads—some on Maui, but mostly on Oahu.

C

Today the companies Hawaiian Cement and Ameron are excavating the last undeveloped dunes in Maui Lani and Lower Waikapu. Earlier this year, officials with Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration prepared the Maui Inland Sand Resource Quantification Study. Their goal was to quantify how many of the inland’s golden grains are left. According to the report, the two companies send approximately 244,000 tons of sand every year to Honolulu for use in ready mix concrete, with another 74,000 tons used on Maui. In 2004, 63 sand barges left Maui, another 96 in 2005 and an estimated 90 barges will shove off this year. If mining continues at this pace, the study concluded that our sand dunes would disappear entirely in just five to seven years. For that reason Arakawa proposed a possible moratorium. The Maui County Council is currently reviewing its legal options. “I equate the loss of our sand resources with the loss of Hawai`i’s `iliahi [sandalwood] trees,” Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons says. “This precious resource and corresponding ecosystems were depleted to nearly nothing in a few short decades.” In the 1800’s loggers harvested Hawai`i’s `iliahi forests to near extinction for the sandalwood trade with China. Maui’s forests never recovered. Getting to the second source of sand for beach nourishment requires dredging the ocean floor out to the offshore channels. But even that oversimplifies the logistics of such an operation: first, officials have to find the sand fields. Then, they need to test the area to see if the material is still pretty white sand or if it’s become gray and dirty from silt, and plant and animal waste. In the past, dredging sand has been considered too expensive when compared to mining inland dune sand. Considering that the inland dunes are now nearly depleted, as well as the cost of trucking the sand—including the wear and tear on our roads—many experts hope dredging may become the more cost-effective solution. While workers have dredged sand from local boat harbors for beach nourishment, offshore sand dredging is new to Hawai`i. Dolan Eversole, Coastal Geologist at the University of Hawai`i Sea Grant College Program, is leading the state’s first offshore dredging project using state-of-the-art offshore sand pumping technologies. The starving, “anorexic” beach they want to plump up—Hawai`i’s world famous Waikiki. Today, the beach is so narrow in places that the tourists are nearly stacked on each other to get a piece of it. In November, workers vacuumed 10,000 cubic yards of sand off the ocean floor 2,000 feet off the coast of Waikiki beach, which they then used to replenish Kuhio Beach, which fronts some of Waikiki’s most popular hotels. It’s those hotels, built right on the shoreline, that explain why the beach has largely disappeared. The dredging and placement of sand cost approximately $452,000, with an additional $20,000 spent on the follow-up water quality monitoring and environmental surveys. Officials will use the data obtained from this pilot project to establish appropriate environmental and design parameters, cost estimates, pumping system designs and production rates for future beach replenishment efforts. “This project proves that the technology is available in Hawai`i,” Eversole says. “I’m hopeful the Waikiki project can serve as an example for potential projects on Maui.” ven if the Waikiki replenishment proves successful, it may not solve our beach erosion problems. UH Professor Chip Fletcher believes the economy to support the tens of millions needed to build and maintain beaches is only found in a few locations around the islands. He thinks beach nourishment may only be a short-term solution to a long-term problem. “Do we want to keep our beaches for one, five or 50 years, and which beaches do we commit to?” he asks. Fletcher believes the most effective long-term approach is for the county to identify healthy beaches on sandy coastal land that have not yet been developed, then buy the land to prevent hotels and houses going up. “As the land erodes with sea-level rise, sand will be released and feed the beach, keeping it healthy,” he says. “The initial cost of buying the land will be high, but ongoing costs will be negligible. Our grandchildren will thank us for making the investment in their future. Fletcher believes counties should go back to the beach parks and try to bring them back to their original state. That means testing the land behind the beach to assure that it’s sand-rich, as well as removing or redesigning the seawalls and building up the dunes behind the beach. “It’s odd how many of our beach parks are missing beaches,” Fletcher says. “Every county has beachless beach parks. It’s worth another look at these and asking if we can do a better job.” Fletcher doesn’t believe the loss of our beaches will bring Hawai`i’s tourism industry to a screech-

E

ing halt. He says many tourists are content to stay at the lavish resorts that provide a simulated beach environment around their pools. The real problem, he says, is that the local community will suffer. “As an ocean community, the loss of our beaches will mean loss of access to the ocean, the ability to race canoes, learning to surf and swim and the loss of those activities most of us like to do after work and on the weekends,” he says. “Local life will be changed dramatically.” MTW

Some Like It Hot How Bangkok Cuisine saved my family from certain death This time last year I was pregnant and angry. I was pro-having another little munchkin around the house and con-actually cooking it in my uterus for nine freaking months. I’m more into the whole growing them in a cabbage patch, or having a large stork drop one off on my doorstep potty trained and weaned. Maternity-wear? No, thanks. The miracle of life doesn’t have anything on a good pair of skinny jeans.

Can I get an Amen, Sisters? A-men. So anyway, I was huge. Okay, granted I wasn’t hugehuge (I’ve seen some gargantuan pregnant women lately), but a final weigh-in of 135 for a former size zero felt positively bovine at 38 weeks. Don’t hate me because I have the metabolism of a rabid ferret. By the third trimester, all I did was eat, sleep, cry and moo. Conversations in my household started to degenerate, as did my fledgling marriage. Actual telephone

conversation, dated 11/20/05: Hubby: [feigning “happy voice”] Hi Honey! How was your day? Me: Moo. Hubby: That good, huh? Did you manage to wash any of my socks? I’ve been out of socks and yours are a little small on me. Me: [angry] Moo Moo, Moo, Moo. Hubby: I understand. You’re tired. [Incoherent mumbling... the words “lazy bitch” are suspected] Me: Moo? Hubby: Okay, well you just sit there and relax. When I get done with my 12-hour workday I’ll pick up some dinner at Bangkok Cuisine for us. How does that sound? Me: Don’t forget dessert. Hubby: I love you. Bye. Me: Moo. The magic words in this conversation are “Bangkok Cuisine.” It was my craving of choice. Originally, they were in Paia where Jacques is now. About five years ago they moved over to Kahului, next to FedEx Kinkos. Their yummy pad Thai noodles have seen me through the best of times and the worst of times—pregnancies, pseudodivorces, young love and well, you get my drift. Yeah, Maui’s got a lot of Thai food. Bangkok Cuisine is my favorite, hands down. The service is totally awesome—quick and friendly. The prices are fair. Two people can eat and drink until the cows come home for under $40. The ambiance is warm, with a bunch of cool Thai tapestries and figurines decorating the place. My favorite dish is the Panang Chicken curry. You can get it with chicken, beef or veggies done up mild, medium or hot. Just a tip from a girl who drowns everything in Tabasco—hot is freaking tongue-on-fire hot. Go for the medium. Trust me. They also offer great starters like the beef or chicken satays and fresh soups and salads. The Cornish game hen is a carnivore’s dream, but vegetarians will be thrilled that almost everything can be prepared to their taste. They have a nice selection of beer, but no hard liquor. Their Thai iced tea is awesome and sweet Yum Pla Dib (above) and Owner John Southammavong’s Family (left)

So if you’re pregnant, angry or just plain hungry for the best Thai food on the island, head on over to Bangkok Cuisine. You’ll leave with a new attitude and new addiction. It could be worse. You could be mooing. Than again, if you go crazy on the Tapioca you’ll be mooing anyway. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

First Light Wednesday (Dec. 13), at the Castle Theater [FILM FEST] One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is the First Light Film Festival. The movies featured at First Light are the cream of the crop for mainstream cinema. This is the nominated group of movies competing for the coveted Oscar Awards. The idea of seeing mainstream films doesn’t necessarily motivate me to the movies. What does is seeing a film at the Castle Theater. On numerous occasions I’ve seen movies there that have made a lasting impression. Most of the time these are movies that I wouldn’t get to see at the other venues on the island, films like Waking Life, The Red Violin, and What the Bleep? Even what I would call a “so-so” movie becomes a little better because of the grand atmosphere of this venue. So what if you can’t eat popcorn and swill down a Coke inside the theater? Better yet, there’s a bar right outside. The bar is part of the Candlelight Café, where you’ll also find delicious food and even better desserts. First Light Film Festival runs Dec. 13 through Jan. 1. See film times and descriptions on p. 27. For more info, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com. [KEITH BENEDICT]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

The Loud Goodbye Saturday (Dec. 9), 5:30 p.m. at Iao Theater [METAL] Heavy metal, as a defined musical style, was born in the ‘70s to the proud parents of blues and hard rock. The closest thing we get to experiencing that supreme progeny here on Maui--and doused with punk influences--is Khrinj. But of course, Khrinj is packing up and splittin’. But at least before they go, they will leave your ears ringing with hard, heavy rock delight at this show, along with four other punk, rock and metal bands with special guests. Tickets: $10. For info, call 298-7569.

Saturday (Dec. 9), 9 p.m. at Life’s a Beach [REGGAE] “Bless up massive!” is the first thing you read on Soul Medic’s website. It goes on to say, “Blazing tunes of higher inspariation and Rastafari conciousness…” It caused me to wonder, were they so stoned in prophetic bliss that they deliberately misspelled, or did they just not smell their spell checker melting down? Beyond that, the sound of Soul Medic—who is a singer, producer, songwriter and DJ—utilizes elements of roots music, lovers’ rock, rub a dub, and hip-hop. He’s recently released an album called Western Cleansing, his second with the Jah Kebra label, and is currently finishing his next album, which will include the single “Ganja Youth.” This weekend’s show also includes Jahworks the Revolutionary with Ras Gabriel and Forward Band, and Pure Fire. Ticket price TBA, call Life’s a Beach at 891-8010 for more info. [KEITH BENEDICT]

[MEDIA WORKSHOP] The art of public relations is an often-undervalued tool for success. Celia Alario is a media strategist, facilitator and affinity marketer with more than 12 years experience supporting grassroots social justice organizations. This workshop will explore PR and publicity tricks for getting your message out to the media and community. Participants are asked to come prepared to share a recent press release, pitch letter or community appeal. To register, or for more info, call 573-8000, ext. 15 or email crystal@innerocean.com. The workshop will be held in the MACC’s Alexa Higashi Meeting Room. Cost: $50.

Ware and Heinkel Tuesday (Dec. 12), 8 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel [FOLK] No it’s not a new sexual position, an undiscovered muscle injury or what your mother might scream at you when you’re late for dinner—you know, like “Ware ‘n Heinkel have you been?!” It’s a cute Christian boy who does indie and folk rock with a talented didgeridoo-ist! Levi Ware grew up in Washington, started a band with his best friend and, after releasing a band album, has recently released his own solo album. In about a month, he’ll be opening for Willie Nelson at the MACC. But this weekend you can have a sneak peek as he joins Frank Heinkel, who is originally from Germany and was drawn to the simple, majestic sound of the didgeridoo after hearing only a clip of it on the radio. Now, after years of playing, it has opened him to new ideas about music and life. And all this in the cozy setting of Café Marc Aurel? Hand me the wine glass! [HEIDI KING]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

The Subjunctive Arbus Interview with director Steven Shainberg Director Steven Shainberg’s long awaited follow-up to his groundbreaking film Secretary (2002) is an antibiopic that dares to read between the lines of its subject’s life rather than replay the common knowledge events of photographer Diane Arbus’ life.

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus Rated R/120 mins.

Only a few factual threads comprise Shainberg’s adventurous tightrope narrative in which Diane (Nicole Kidman) Arbus’ artistic awakening that transported her from repressed daughter, wife and mother to becoming one of the greatest photographic visionaries of the 20th century. I spoke to Steven Shainberg at the Regency hotel in Manhattan. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: When you decided to make a movie about Diane Arbus, why did you choose to create an imaginary context for the narrative? STEVEN SHAINBERG: First of all, I don’t personally have any interest in

straight-ahead biopics. I never walk out of a straight-ahead biopic and feel like I genuinely got to know who that person was. I think that they deal with too much time, in general, so they are essentially superficial. They feel like the greatest hits of a famous person’s life—from dramatic scene to dramatic scene to dramatic scene. I am interested in making a film about somebody that tells you what you don’t know. It goes into a mystery and it goes into a process. In the case of this film it was essentially unconscious. She [Diane Arbus] didn’t really know what was happening to her in 1958. It was a beautiful transformation that occurred and one of things I have always wondered about her is how did that happen. How did this woman, in 1958, at the age of 35, married with two kids, doing what she considered to be banal work in her fashion photography studio with her husband, become the Diane Arbus we know? And that is not a question that can be answered literally.

Brilliant!

When did you first have this idea to create this kind of film? Years and years ago. It was the only movie I could imagine doing myself. But this is long before I even made a feature. You know, I have been thinking about this because I was around the pictures when I was a small kid, and my uncle Lawrence was a close friend of hers [Diane Arbus] and I was very conscious of her. And to some extent she was already a kind of mythical figure for me. So when Ed Pressman and Bonnie

WE ARE PLEASED TO INTRODUCE

Timmermann, who controlled the rights to the Bosworth biography, said, “Have you ever heard of Diane Arbus?” I said, “I can’t fucking believe this!” Barbara Streisand was going to do it. Diane Keaton was going to do it. I would think, “Oh no! I don’t want to see that movie be made, and even worse, I am never going to get to make one.” So, I have thought about it for a long time, how I had to go after the subject if I ever got the chance. Believe me, when I went in and talked to them about it, they encountered a guy that was not going to leave the room. It was a movie I really wanted to make. What makes Nicole Kidman work for your vision of Diane Arbus? You have to understand that since the movie is not a literal vision—it is a dream—I wanted somebody that didn’t look like her, first of all. I wanted some-

body that would take you into that alternative space. But more importantly what I was really trying to do was find somebody who I felt could portray the inner transformation that she is making. And if you know Nicole Kidman or if you see her work, she strikes me, and it proves to be true knowing her and working with her, she struck me as a woman of enormous curiosity—somebody who truly wishes, like Arbus, to discover other worlds and to experience those other worlds and to be as intimate as possible with them, to do that with enormous capacity and sensitivity and openness. When I sat down and talked to her about the script and who Arbus was and what this very particular experience is that we were trying to portray in the film, that is exactly who she seemed to be. And that is exactly what she goes after in life. So there is obviously not an external similarity, but I think there is an internal similarity. MTW

Mushroom Spinner DJ Mark Farina is more popular than you and his MySpace page proves it kay, so I fully admit to being un-cool, non-hip, square, out-of-the-loop, whatever. But there was a time (granted, it was about a decade ago) that I was the “It Girl” of the Maui Rave scene. Back in the day, we’d party at The Lighthouse or Raceway until the wee hours of the morning, or until the cops came and hauled our asses home. I so don’t recommend tripping out on the flashing blue lights (although they are truly fascinating)—dead fricking giveaway. Du-ude. The dress code in the stone-ages for listening to mad house tunes in the middle of nowhere was copious amounts of body glitter, big pants, little tank tops and fully dilated pupils. I’m guessing times have changed, although the whole pupil thing is probably still in fashion. Some looks are just classic. Anyway, I can’t tell you for sure who was spinning during those raves. I think maybe a guy named Augie, occasionally a girl named Beth and/or various other stoners. It was cool, but hardly anything to write home about. It was kinda like the jazz was only as good as the acid, not the other way around.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Fast forward a bunch of years and enter DJ Mark Farina. Farina has been spinning music since the 1980’s, which (through some simple mathematical calculations) makes him way older than me. The difference is, he’s managed to stay cool. He started off spinning in Chicago while living the ultimate successful music person cliché—i.e. crashing at home with his parents. Eventually, he moved out to San Francisco where his smooth tunes gained popularity through a club called Jazid Up. Farina labeled his music “Mushroom Jazz” as opposed to Acid Jazz because his mixes tend to be mellower than regular house. “The term ‘acid jazz’ was too abrasive,” said Farina. “I wanted something more organic.” Like mushrooms... which are super, uh, organic... and stuff. Over the past two decades Farina has gathered a huge following—he plays all over God’s green earth and was voted in the top 20 DJ’s of the world by MUZIK and BPM magazine. Not to mention his MySpace page—as of this issue of MTW, Farina has 8,206 friends and his profile has been viewed 72,585 times. Kind of makes you feel puny, doesn’t it? Not only is Farina a world renowned DJ, he’s quite dramatic about it: “I look at my job as a modern day traveling minstrel—to bring new music to as many places as I can and expose obscure records that otherwise might go hidden.” The next stop in his mission? Well, Hawai`i, of course. Daniel J of Love & Light Productions is bringing Farina to Kauai, Maui and Oahu. You don’t want to miss this. Seriously, it’s gonna be phenomenal. Not to mention, maybe you can gain coolness points by association and then beg him to friend you on MySpace. Oh, the possibilities. For more on Farina, visit his snazzy website www.markfarina.net. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) This week you may discover how astoundingly quickly something can snowball out of control. Your good idea can spread virally and grow larger than you intended, more swiftly then you imagined possible. It’s amazing, and I can imagine it’s a bit daunting, but please don’t forget that this is your idea. Let’s assume that you believe in it and are willing to follow it through. Will you ride this fantastical beast you’ve helped create, or will it get away from you and roll off into the distance without you?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) We know you have remarkable follow-through and persistence. What’s less impressive is your stubbornness, which doesn’t serve you quite as well. Sticking to your guns is all very well and good—when you’re actually right. When you’re wrong, though, it just hurts you and everyone around you; because no one can mount a significant challenge to your obstinacy, you may wallow in your wrongness for months or years. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been maintaining this shitty, untenable position. Backing down now will win you allies and respect, not the shame or humiliation you’re predicting, dreading and trying to avoid.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’re boring me, Aquarius. Why do you insist on keeping whatever cool shit you’ve discovered to yourself? It’s doing your discovery and us a disservice. We count on you Water Bearers to keep exploring new frontiers on every level, be it music, spirituality, science or even business. Don’t be lazy and rely on your past (impressive) accomplishments. Your job is to stay on the cutting edge of whatever it is you’re interested in and keep finding new territory to explore there. Please, this week: do your job.

Pisces are natural talents. When a Pisces becomes an actor, for example, they usually have some weird x-factor that means they’re compelling even when they’re not especially well-trained (or even good). Whatever you put your hand to, you’re virtually guaranteed that it won’t be an utter failure— unless you sabotage it yourself (which is, unfortunately, something you’re occasionally prone to do). Your hesitation to dive into your recently discovered interest(s) implies to me that you’re totally unaware that you’re certain to get something out of it and produce something worthwhile. Now that you know that, will you stop hemming and hawing and just get going?

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Go out a lot this week. Use any excuse you can make up to get out of the house. Down-time’s a waste, given how likely it is that good things will happen to you if you put yourself in a position for them to occur. What form will these exciting opportunities and events take? I haven’t the foggiest; they could run the gamut from running into a long-lost friend, stumbling upon an unsought but fantastic opportunity, or finally being able to open the door to a long-overdue flirtation or courtship. All I can suggest is doing lots of different things, as many as you can think of. Some of them are virtually guaranteed to work out brilliantly.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re not stupid; you just feel that thick and oblivious at times. Really, who cares that you’re not always clued in to the newest fads or water cooler topics? They’re not as important as the stuff you usually have on your mind. However, it can be awfully fun to be leading the conversation rather than limping along behind gathering scraps of information. This week, you’re about as current as can be about what everyone’s going to want to talk about. Grab that spotlight, since you can. You’ll probably surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I dreamt you spent years living inside a cheesy karaoke bar. At first, you were horrified and miserable. You did everything you could—in vain, naturally—to block out the terrible singing of horrific songs which plagued you day in and day out. After a while, however, you learned to laugh at it most of the time, instead of suffering from it or being irritated by it. Eventually, you were even able to tune it out completely. My point? You can get used to anything. You might even be able to enjoy getting used to it, if you try.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Sometimes you choose incredibly backward strategies to get what you want. I swear, I wouldn’t exactly be surprised if you announced tomorrow that you were planning to lose weight by going on an “all butter diet.” Is it subconscious self-sabotage which compels you to do exactly the opposite of what would actually achieve your desired result? Be coldly rational about your choices this week. What do you really want? Is your current strategy even remotely likely to be helpful? Probably not. Consider doing an about-face and heading in an entirely new direction. I suspect you’ll get a lot closer to your destination that way.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) It’s your ego, of course, that makes you so powerful and radiant. Confidence goes a long way in this world. If you believe you can do it—as you so often do—that usually translates to actually being able to do it. It’s kind of like a superpower. But it’s also your kryptonite, my dear—especially when it comes to relationships. This is not to say you should settle for any old creep who’ll sleep with you—only that your ego needs are probably just a bit too demanding. Chill out a bit, won’t you, and cut your lover some slack. Fish for compliments elsewhere if you need them that bad.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Virgos are generally either asexual or kinky as all get-out. It depends on whether you’re currently channeling any of that abundant energy of yours into your sex life. Some Virgos are practically virginal for years at a time, because they’re too busy with other concerns. When you find someone who compels you to unlock that part of your psyche, however, watch out—you can even give Scorpios a run for their money. This week’s likely to screw with whatever arrangement you’ve made with your libido. If you don’t freak out, you might end up with one that’s a lot more fun.

I have often wondered how to cure Librans of their frequent obsession with normalcy because when they embrace and celebrate their creative freakhood, they can be the coolest people around. Until they do, however, they’re often the lamest and most boring (even though they think they’re the life of the party). This is why Libras are usually my favorite and least favorite people, depending on how deeply they’ve developed and explored their own individuality. How free are you from the tyranny of being normal? I think you could be just that little bit freer. This week, try.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Librans may have the choice whether or not to embrace their idiosyncrasies, but not so Scorpios. Your freak flag flies whether you like it or not. Thus you have very little choice about when people discover your quirks, kinks and tragic flaws. This is both a good and bad thing. It eliminates the need for you to pretend to be anything other than what you are, but it’s also quite a shock to those who aren’t used to encountering someone’s intensities all at once. You’re used to the occasional freak-out, but this week reactions to your eccentricities are likely to surprise even you.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

Letters From Lil Jen A couple months ago, my dear friend Jen—former HG cohort, Lahaina bartender, Sugar Shack roomie and owner of the electric-green purse on fire—moved back home. She hadn’t been back to the East Coast for nearly 12 years, but was excited about making a new life for herself and her boyfriend in Pennsylvania. Here are a few of her recent letters to me... Oct. 11, 2006 Shane and I are bored stiff—only five more days until we move into our freshly remodeled pad. I’ve recently become addicted to live auctions. It’s like gambling, except that you always go home with something! I’ve gotten cool antiques to outfit our apartment—sometimes things need a little work so it’s keeping us busy. Staining, painting, sanding, clamping… I’m turning into my mother more with every day that passes. Frankly, I’m a little concerned. Once again I’ve imbibed way too much coffee—when will I learn? Tell me something cool you’ve done, I’m bored. Hopefully I’ll have some stories myself when we finally reach our destination—the promise land—Philadelphia. I need some bizarre things to happen, I’ve fallen behind. No doubt they will start once I reach Mecca. Please send me shit, email is my only entertainment, except when I pull pranks on Shane, he’s so easy! It’s so discouraging when I check and there is nothing sent from my contacts, considering I check on average six times a day. Not likely, huh? I’ve become quite the computer nerd—thought you’d never hear me type that in my lifetime. Okay I’m done babbling, I guess I’ll smoke another cigarette—oh yeah, quitting is going real well. Send my love and hugs… Oct. 15: Hey, tomorrow is the big day. I’m nervous as hell. Leave it to me to worry about just about anything. It’s just getting from point A to point B that worries me. I’m a loon. I need a Valium or a Vicodin or something. How are things in your world? I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to this time change thing. Someone shoot me clear into Tuesday or something. I guess I’ll go grab another beer and pace around some more. Do you know that feeling when you’re just tired of being you? When you just need some time to breathe and realize how retarded you are, then go back with a clear focus? This is one of those times, not to be Debbie Rigatoni [an alias], but to be Jessica Livingston. Jessica’s got her head on straight and is walking on a clear path to success. Jessica is dressed to kill and her hair is not frizzy. She showers regularly and smells of roses. I think that just creating her has somehow helped… nope, I’m back again—drats! I’m losing it. So I love you, I know that for sure even if everything else is a little fuzzy. Have a blissful day and pray that I make it through tomorrow in one piece (mind and body). I bid you adieu… Nov. 9: I got the job at BCBG, only part-time but whatever, it’s something for right now. I’m still working on beefing up my resume. I’m going to start volunteering at the art museums. Just to get myself in a productive atmosphere and to get out and meet people. Anything is better than sitting alone and watching CSI for the umpteenth time. My dad is taking the train in tomorrow and spending the day and then my mom is coming down on Monday to have lunch. Those are the main reasons I moved home— day trips of that kind. Money is going to be real tight for a while. I’m not used to living paycheck-to-paycheck, and not a very big paycheck for that matter. I don’t feel like it was a mistake at all, but my self-esteem is slipping. My confidence needs to build back up. All in due time I suppose. Love and miss you lots… Nov. 13: Hey there, chica! I started my new job. It looks like I may actually enjoy shopping for other people, especially with their money. Shane just got a job with Chevy and no longer has to wait tables. Can you believe it? I’m dating a car salesman! Who knew? It’s constantly raining here and I am without rain gear. It’s next on my list of things I need. Oh, the other day Shane and I went shopping in the Italian Market—you know that street that Rocky [Balboa] runs down when he is training? Well, it was too cool. We got all this fresh fruit and veggies for way cheap and then we went to the butcher’s and they ground our meat right there. The fish market was awesome—fresh everything—one good thing about living in a port city. I just got such a kick out of it, and it’s rather close to our apartment. We’re learning to work the city for all it has to offer. It’s just taking a little time. Still have to make it to the museums. I just want to wait until it stops raining—traveling in that shit, especially by bus, is the pits. My umbrella has gotten turned inside out I can’t tell you how many times. Embarrassing. Ah, humility. Dec. 5: The weather is getting much colder and my apartment is getting lonelier. Shane’s at work and it’s me and Regis, Kelly and Rachel Ray. Work in the commission world is dog-eat-dog. I’m not really enjoying that aspect and, of course, I want more. Always. I forgot how hard moving is until you get settled. Everything is great between Shane and I. It’s just hard when you have to be everything to one another. I don’t know what I want or what would make me feel better. Maybe a couple hours with you would do the trick. Lunch, a cheeseburger, a beer and

a cigarette—ah, the makings of a good afternoon! Some conversation with a friend, a knowing and understanding glance, a hug. I’ve been painting, it’s been nice. I’m sort of revisiting the person I left behind in Pennsylvania. All the things that I used to do here that made me happy and made me who I was; all the things I haven’t done since I left this state, I am revisiting. Why did I leave them behind, why do I constantly feel the need to reinvent myself? I feel like I’m just going in circles, running over the same old ground, stupid. What is it that I’m looking for that I haven’t found? Or has it always been there and I’ve just refused to notice it, accept it? I miss your smell… you forget the little things like that until they’re gone and maybe that’s why I moved back here—I missed the smell of the East. Well, I’ve got to go back out into the cold and go home and get ready for work. We dress in all black, like a funeral, isn’t that fitting. Sorry to be so sad, I just needed to tell someone who knew me what I was feeling. Tomorrow is another day and another chance to turn it all around. Love you terribly...
