LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR If you’re going to rip off someone else’s concept, at least make it entertaining (“Found,” Dec. 7, 2006). That note wasn’t the least bit interesting or funny. And why doesn’t Maui Time have a letters to the editor section so that people can voice their feedback about the paper anyway? -JGuaderamma, via email The Editor responds: Tell you what: I’ll start a Letters to the Editor column this week just so I can print this. Thanks! Wow. Awesome! Thank you. -JGuaderamma, via email The Editor responds again: Okay, I was being sarcastic. I do that. We run letters all the time—when we get them. Sometimes I guess I don’t piss anyone off, and we get no letters. I still have to fill that particular space in the paper, though, so I have to be creative. Some weeks I’m better than others. I do have letters this week, though, and will run your letter.

YOU’RE WELCOME Thank you for the informative article “Sand Castle” by Cheryl Ambrozic (Dec. 7, 2006). Maui’s beaches ARE disappearing, but protecting and restoring them is actually feasible. One successful “beach nourishment” proj-

ISN’T REGGAE ILLEGAL IN TEXAS? I just had to chuckle after reading “Farewell, Khrinj!” by Samantha Campos (Nov. 30, 2006). In the article one of the band members says, “this island doesn’t cater to anybody unless you’re a reggae band.” I live in the fourth largest city in the U.S., Houston Texas, and I can assure the members of Khrinj they won’t have that to worry about that anymore coming to the mainland. I consider myself a reggae fan, and to even

get a whiff of a reggae show I have to drive to Austin, which while having an excellent live music scene, still has little reggae to offer... What we do have in abundance are heavy metal bands; in fact I would say they are a dime a dozen on any given night. In the article a band member states, “We just wanna play somewhere and see bands we like.” Well, they should have ample opportunity to fulfill their dream to their hearts content. The problem they might not realize is there is a lot of competition in the heavy metal music scene on the mainland. In Maui, Khrinj might be the gods of heavy metal but on the mainland they are just another clog in the wheel. Happy Jamming boys, and welcome to the jungle! -Matt Landry, Houston, Texas

PUMP DON’T DUMP IN OUR OCEAN WATERS!

Ha ha! OK, you got me. I wondered that for a minute because I could have sworn I had seen them before. Either way, I’m not really pissed, just surprised and disappointed. I’d say I’m usually impressed with 90 percent of the Maui Time content. -JGuaderamma, via email

ect has been going on at Sugar Cove since the mid-1990s. As I understand it, until the 1960’s, sand was removed from much of the north shore between Kahului and Paia for use in processing sugar cane. After the sand mining stopped, the beaches continued to shrink because functioning of the natural shoreline system was disrupted by the combination of sand removal and “hardening” of the shoreline by protective walls and revetments. In 1995, after previous attempts over 10 years—sandbags, tires, a beach wall—had failed, Sugar Cove (on the north shore, between Baby Beach and Spreckelsville) residents succeeded in their first beach nourishment projects, which brought in hundreds of tons of sand. They have added more sand in subsequent years, with a goal of returning the beach to its 1912 shoreline. What was recently a steep, rocky beach is again a sandy crescent, popular with families, fishers, divers, surfers, boogie boarders, wind and kite surfers, etc. It is beautiful, it is useful, and it protects the land and buildings from damaging ocean waves. I encourage Maui residents to learn how our beach and ocean systems work, to support efforts to stop exporting our very limited sand supply, and to support beach conservation and renewal programs. -Karen Storer, Pukalani

AMOUNT: $500

This, as far as I can tell from looking through the arcane, voluminous and insufferably dull campaign finance statements so far made public, was philanthropist/realtor/power broker Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi’s final campaign contribution to a Maui official or soon-to-be official. This year alone, Yokouchi gave between $300 and $500 to seven of the nine 2007-2008 Maui County Councilmembers—Baisa, Danny Mateo (who was running unopposed), Michelle Anderson, Mike Victorino, Bill Medeiros, Joe Pontanilla and Mike Molina. He gave council chairman Riki Hokama $350 last year, and $400 the year before. He gave Bob Carroll, who retired this year, $250 back in 2002. In uncertain races, he was known to hedge his bets, too. In 2005, he gave $2,000 to Mayor Alan Arakawa. But earlier this year, he gave another $2,000 to Councilwoman Charmaine Tavares, who ultimately defeated Arakawa. Usually Pundy backed Democrats, but there were notable exceptions. For instance, in 2005 he donated $2,000 to Republican Governor Linda Lingle’s campaign (records show Yokouchi did not contribute any money to Democrat Randy Iwase’s bid to unseat Lingle). See, Pundy usually, but not always, backed winners. This year he gave $2,000 each to Maui County Councilman Dain Kane and former Mayor James “Kimo” Apana in their ultimately fruitless quests to win the mayor’s office.

How do you think it felt to come home from vacation to find that your dumb ass stole our moped and left the lock sitting in our empty stall as proof of your selfishness and how evil you are? LC Watch No Blues at Paradice Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas is a nice guy. He’s very polite, friendly and courteous. He’s intelligent, capable and professional. That’s why his calling for a $2,000 fine (with $1,000 suspended for a year) to sanction Paradice Bluz in Lahaina for the crime of letting “several patrons” carry their drinks onto the dance floor was so shocking and outrageous. At the Dec. 7, 2006 LC Board of Adjudication hearing, Temas told the panel that in the early morning hours of Sunday,

July 9 of this year, LC Officer Trainee Karilee Mukai “watched several patrons consuming liquor while on the dance floor.” This went on, she reported to her supervisor, LC Officer John McMurray, who was also in the club that night, for five minutes. After taking photos of the offending patrons, McMurray and Mukai then informed the manager that they’d be writing up a violation. “Several” customers taking their drinks to the dance floor. For five minutes. No priors for the offense, either.

to their chest as they bounced around. He added that keeping alcoholic beverages out of the specially taped-off dance floor was a nightly concern for him and his staff. For whatever reason, the board rejected the idea of fining Mahon the same amount of money they slap down on establishments found guilty of serving minors or drunks. Deliberating for just five minutes—maybe irony lives at LC headquarters after all—the board threw out Temas’ recommended fine in favor of a simple letter of reprimand.

Sounds like a $2,000 fine to me. Pleading no contest, owner Chris Mahon told the board that sometimes his floor staff would catch customers holding drinks close

“Happy holidays,” Mahon said, walking out.

That’s because Earthjustice just filed suit against them on behalf of the groups Hui o Na Wai `Eha and Maui Tomorrow Foundation on the grounds that both companies are “monopolizing” water from Waihe`e, Waiehu, `Iao and Waikapu streams. Earthjustice wants the state Commission on Water Resource Management to come in and start regulating the streams. Now, you think it’s strange for two companies to move up the list on the account of them being sued? Have you seen what they’re accused of? “Since 2004, the community groups have been pursuing legal action to restore Na Wai `Eha’s streams,” reads Earthjustice’s Dec. 6, 2006 press release. “The County of Maui has supported these efforts and also seeks public management of these resources to alleviate the critical shortage of ground water for drinking and other uses. The companies, however, continue to hoard all the water, totaling about 60 million gallons a day, and have refused for years to provide complete information on their actual end uses, much less restore any water to the streams.” Sixty million gallons a day! Of course, officials with Wailuku Water Co. and HC&S have long denied “hoarding” any water and insist the water they take from the streams is vital to their sugar cane crops. Considering how long the argument over the four streams has gone on—in spite of the fact that Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration wanted the water regulated—it’s easy to see why these two firms ought to move up the list. Of course, should a judge rule against them and take away their precious streams, they’ll sink to the bottom like lead anchors. But who knows if or when that’ll happen.

a brief period during World War II the federal Government asked farmers to grow hemp for our Navy, with it’s [sic] ‘Hemp for Victory’ campaign.” Today, of course, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency wants hemp eradicated. Anyway, Simmons says that the 1999’s Industrial Hemp Day saw the planting of the first legal hemp seeds in the state since the war, and wants you to know that the local group he’s heading, Industrial Hemp Echelons, Maui Project (IHEMP) is “ready to lead the way,” presumably to more hemp seed plantings. For more information (like the dos and don’ts concerning “hemp stalk”) you can contact Simmons at ihemp@hemp.com.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 6 Got an email today from local resident Anthony Simmons, last seen back in October assisting his Cerebral Palsy-stricken friend Ramoda Anand in his quest to find out what the Department of Liquor Control had against dancing. This time, Simmons wants us to think about hemp. “On December 14th 1999 Governor Ben Cayetano declared the day to be ‘Industrial Hemp Day’ for the state of Hawaii,” he wrote. “He, along with many politicians, believed that hemp would be a great agricultural crop for the state.” Simmons then went on to list many well-known examples of hemp use in American history including—and I didn’t know this—that “for

Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote about that kick-ass debate over at Seabury Hall in which all three panelists agreed that using Hawaiian culture and traditions in commercial advertising designed to attract tourists to our fair islands was, at best, a risky thing to do? Boy, it’s a good thing none of the big land developers showed up, or I wouldn’t have anything to write about anymore. “The Maui real estate community was abuzz at the Honua Kai Discovery Center this weekend during a VIP sales event for the second and final condominium tower at Honua Kai—on famed Ka`anapali Beach,” read a breathless press release sent out Monday by Vancouver-based Intrawest. Like all the big developers who build giant, glassy condo or timeshare towers that pave over lush, natural beachfront and then further tax the island’s already crumbling infrastructure, Intrawest then gives them pretty Hawaiian names like Honua Kai (Earth sea), Hokulani (nighttime sky) or Konea (restored to health). That last one is the name of their new condo tower that’s on sale now, with apartments selling from “the mid $600,000’s to $5.6 million.” And they will, too—their Hokulani tower sold out completely in eight hours last December. The reason? “Luxury CondominiumHotel developments, located in irreplaceable locations, continue to be met with high demand in the Hawaiian Islands,” the release noted without a trace of irony. And though the housing market may be cooling, Intrawest is all fired up over its next project, Na Hale Luana. “Meaning ‘pleasant surroundings,’ Na Hale Luana will embrace the tranquil beauty, climate and geographic wonders of the Islands, with contemporary Hawaiian architecture complementing the natural setting.” I’d throw up, but I don’t think the island’s sewage treatment facilities could handle the increased volume.

SATURDAY, Dec. 9 With South Maui lobbying the state to allow Texas-based Triad Hospitals, Inc. to come in and run a private medical facility in Kihei, and Central Maui lobbying just as hard to kill that hospital on the grounds it will rob Maui Memorial Medical Center of much needed money and doctors, people might think that now isn’t exactly be a good time for West Maui to start asking for a hospital of its own. But they’re wrong! It’s always a good time to ask for a hospital. In fact, people don’t ask for their own hospital nearly enough. People in Hana—who conspicuously lack their own hospital—need to speak up. And what’s up with those who live on Lanai and Molokai? How come they’re not asking for theirs, too? Wait, don’t forget Kaho`olawe—I think a dozen people live out there, surrounded by old U.S. Navy bombs and such. If anyone needs a hospital, it’s that place. And while we’re at it, lets put a hospital on Molokini, just in case a snorkeler from Idaho gets bitten by something and needs an amputation or blood transfusion. Never can be too careful, you know.

global overfishing by 2010,” Gutierrez said, according to The Maui News. “While we are here, we are looking at what is being done.” Doesn’t that just fill you with hope? Or at least the goal of filling you with hope by 2010?

MONDAY, Dec. 11 It isn’t often that you open The Maui News and find THE GREATEST STORY EVER, but today I did, which was absurdly buried on the third page. Headlined “Toplessness not indecent by law,” the article explains how it’s perfectly legal in the State of Hawai`i for women to sunbathe topless. “Topless sunbathing in itself would not cause an arrest nor is it an act punishable with arrest,” Maui Police Lieutenant Donald Kanemitsu says in the article. Though he added that he hoped women “would consider surrounding children” before popping their tops, he said cops cannot legally “force sunbathers to put their tops on.” The article even includes some state Supreme Court case law to explain how “female breasts were not ‘private parts’ under the open lewdness statute.”

TUESDAY, Dec. 12 SUNDAY, Dec. 10 Great news for people worried about how we’re utterly destroying the world’s oceans: U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez sailed around Maui’s own Humpback Whale Sanctuary yesterday and pledged that his boss—that would be President George W. Bush, still—would kinda sorta set up a plan that may help the oceans sometime after he’s left power. “The president established a goal of ending

For those joining me late, let me reiterate: the Maui Police Department says topless sunbathing on one of our beautiful Maui beaches is completely legal. And now if you’ll excuse me, I have some… research… to conduct. Anthony Pignataro recently had to enter the Witness Protection Program after he testified against the guy who killed the electric car. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD NEW YORK RULES To settle a discrimination lawsuit by transsexual men in October, the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority agreed to open all of its restrooms on the basis of individuals’ “gender expression,” meaning that any man dressed seriously as a woman could choose the ladies’ room. And New York City is currently considering adopting a rule to permit people to switch genders on their birth certificates, regardless of whether they’ve had surgery, as long as they’ve lived in the new gender for two years and a physician and a mental-health counselor approve.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Karen Madden, 38, goes on trial in December in Harrisburg, Pa., after allegedly confessing to stealing $550,000 worth of jewelry and handbags from the residence of her former boss, who is the chancellor of the state’s college system. The chancellor, testifying at a July hearing on the charges, said Madden had called her recently and apologized but then went on to say, “I hope you and I can still be friends, and I would like to use you, can I use you as a reference, just for the work part?”

THE UK IS FUN Britain’s Channel 4 public television announced in July that it would soon schedule a week of documentaries on masturbation, including one by self-designated “orgasm coach” Betty Dodson, “Masturbation for Girls,” teaching hands-on techniques to three women. But the pendulum swung the other way in October when Britain’s Tesco stores agreed that a kit for learning pole dancing to “[u]nleash the sex kitten inside,” with a garter and suggestive DVD, was perhaps unsuited for its “toy” section, where it might have been appealing to adolescent girls. Tesco moved the listing

INEXPLICABLE Two men in a Dodge Neon were seriously injured in a rollover accident on Interstate 75 near Toledo, Ohio, in October after a red bra flew from the radio antenna of another car, startling the Neon driver and causing him to swerve and lose control. The Ohio Highway Patrol later learned that the owner of the bra had hung it from the aerial after she realized that it had broken due to her dog’s having chewed on it earlier that day. A prosecutor said a misdemeanor littering charge would be filed against the woman, but was exploring whether there had been out-the-window socializing between the cars’ occupants before the rollover.

BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST After shooting video undercover in 10 Army recruiting offices in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, ABC News released in November an episode of recruiters telling a prospect that no one is going to Iraq anymore. “No, we’re bringing people back,” he said, and his partner followed with, “We’re not at war. War ended a long time ago.” In a separate on-camera interview, Col. Robert Manning, who is in charge of Army recruiting in the Northeast, said, “We are a nation and Army at war still.”

inding your loved ones gifts is both the best and worst part of the holiday season. Each year we try to give you ideas about the best places on Maui to find really great presents, and each year we exhaust ourselves. So this year we decided to let friends, community leaders, readers and strangers we met on the street do the deciding for us, leaving us time to get our own shopping done. Enjoy!

BARBARA TRECKER Marketing Director, Maui Arts & Cultural Center The best local gift I ever received was from my friend Ryn, who— when I had to move back to San Francisco for a year to take care of my son—put an ad out for a new best friend because her Best Friend was moving and she just didn’t know how to cope without. Then she put the ad in a frame and gave it to me. My favorite local gift to give is fun Japanese/island package food and “crack seed” stuff: dried and pickled mango, li hing mui, arare, wasabi peanuts, dried squid, etc.—a whole box of whatever, because I think it’s a good thing for the recipient to experience. It’s a ”whether you like it or not” kinda thing. And you know, most people end up finding their next New Favorite Thing if they taste something they’ve never had before. The gift I would like to receive (or buy, but he won’t sell it to me): Chef Matteo’s light green Vespa… because it’s the perfect color Vespa. Maui County Drug Court Administrator For my daughter I go out and buy a little purse at Goodies ‘N Things in the Maui Mall, which is the Number One place on Maui to find Hello Kitty stuff and then I stuff it with dollar bills. Then when we go out we can go to Guri Guri, which is also in the Maui Mall, and she can get two scoops, which cost a dollar. What, you’ve never heard of Guri Guri? How long have you been on Maui? It’s this little, hole-in-the-wall place that sells this kind of sherbet/ice-cream. They have strawberry, but it doesn’t really taste like strawberry—more like a strawberry-fruit punch–and other fruit flavors. The kids love it. AL KANASHIRO Bouncer, Bocalino I really like Maui Tropix and Honolua Surf Co. It’s the best place to get board shorts and T-shirts because they have clothes that represent Maui, but not in a touristy way. But my favorite-ist store, in Kihei anyway, is Beach Road Records. KEITH BENEDICT Intern, Maui Time Weekly I love motorcycles, especially those with a V-twin motor. A couple years ago my then girlfriend, now wife, gave me my favorite local Christmas present, a gift certificate at the local Harley Davidson dealer. I knew it wasn’t a cheap gift. People in the Harley community also affectionately refer to the letters H-D as another abbreviation for a Hundred Dollars. This is because anything you want to do with a Harley will cost you a hundred dollars on up. I prefer sneaky giving. The best form of giving is the anonymous variety. Giving to children should be the point of this season, especially the little ones in need. My favorite way of doing this is in years past has been to utilize the Angel Tree program. I like to make gifts. Every year it’s something different. Sometimes I do cookies, or ornaments. It’s Christmas related. So with regards to shopping, I go to Ben Franklin or Long’s to get the stuff I need. Sometimes it’s the market, like Star Market or Safeway. I spend a lot of time crafting things together. I made some ornaments out of dried pasta and painted it. I also did a big cookie platter for my class. It’s therapeutic making all the gifts. Lot of work, too. The best year or thing that I made was little photo ornaments that I printed on my computer. But that was so much work to decorate them all. I had to make it easier this year. Well, the best gift I got was the one I bought for myself. I like to go to the Shops at Wailea. They have the designer label stuff. I know you want the local businesses included and that is why I also mention that the Enchantress is in there. I love that shop. It’s where to go for your holiday party wardrobe. Silk dresses—they actually have gowns, like ball gowns for the red carpet. I am not dressing up that much for the holidays here but someone is, I guess. I also go to the Honolua Surf in there for the swimwear. It’s not too risqué but it’s still modern. Plus there are a lot of galleries in there. You can find pricey gifts, but also wander like you are in a museum, which we don’t have here. It goes good with everything and people are always stopping me on the street to ask where I got it. There are some other “hula skirt”-looking bags out there but don’t be fooled by knockoffs. Ivy Hannah’s been doing it the longest and the other ones out there are borderline tacky while hers are totally chic. She also does these cool flapper-ish fringe bags in all these different colors. I know you used to be able to get them around Makawao and a couple places in Wailea but maybe you should just call the designer herself. Ivy Hannah handbags, 280-0141. (LB)

ANDREW WATT Airline Security, TSA This year I’m hoping to get some candles and maybe some wine for Christmas. My wife’s due with our first baby on December 20th, so the wine and candles may come in handy, you know? I like the candles from the Island Candle Company—they have this new scent called Hawaiian White Ginger that’s supposed to be nice, and they also make candles from Hawaiian beeswax, which is a good idea for sending to relatives on the mainland. As for the wine, I really enjoy the Ulupalakua Red. It’s perfect for cold weather and sitting by the fireplace. NORA BURNS Manhattan Mama, Coconut Cabaret Well, I hate shopping for clothes, and my husband has much better taste than I do anyway, so I love when he gets me clothes or jewelry from Nuage Bleu because you can’t go wrong. The gift we always bring people on the mainland is the red clay salt, which they sell at Mana or Pukalani Superette for $4 and sells at Dean & Deluca in New York City for $15. Oh, and I always love getting a gift certificate for a massage because I’m too cheap to get them for myself and there are so many great masseuses here—as I always say, on Maui you can’t swing a cat without hitting a massage therapist. SLYVIA LANGE Visitor Well, I sit around with books all the time so I want to get people books. I get all the kids I have to shop for books, too. I want them to read. The only local bookstore I know of is the little used bookstore in Lahaina. It’s fantastic. I get lots of reading material there. It’s small and cozy, the way a bookstore should be. But the huge bookstore like Border’s in Kahului is helpful too. Oh, I like Amazon, too, I have to admit. My husband doesn’t get me books for Christmas. He doesn’t know what to get because I read so much. That’s fine, and I don’t get him books either. Well, I’m planning on going up to Ali`i Kula Lavender in Kula to do a tour and make a holiday wreath, so I’ll probably give the wreath away as a present. Kill two birds with one stone. The kama`aina rates are half-price up there, so I get to do a bunch of stuff and have a gift to give away for pretty cheap. I think when I do the tour I get to look around and eat scones and stuff. They have a gift shop up there too, with a whole bunch of made-on-Maui stuff. It should be fun.

I love antiques, so that is what I always want. They don’t even have to be actual antiques, just old nick-nacks. I got this cool bottle last year from my boyfriend. It has a history—dug up from an old buried trash pile. Basically buried treasure. There are some great antique stores on the island, if you don’t have time to dig. In Paia on Hana Highway there is one called Paia Trading Co. that has great stuff. I like their furniture and pictures a lot. board wax, Maui-kine shot glass, Girls of Maui calendar, rubbah slippahs, Hawaiian music CD, DVD of Merrie Monarch Festival, Maui coffee table books… and I forgot about all the cheesy shit from Hilo Hatties I’ve bought—aloha-print Christmas stockings, surfing Santas, crackhead reindeer, etc. And what have I had my eye on? A night on the town with a local A&E columnista. And if that don’t work, a `ukulele. KELLY SILVA Mother I have teenage girls so I don’t know what I will be getting from them. My girls love clothes so that is what I am shopping for this year. They like the surfer girl look so I have a list from them. I will be at Shapers, Local Motion, Honolua Surf Co.. I will also go to Paia to the other surf shops there. Simmer, Hana Highway. Those are good, too. It’s a lot of fun to see the girls open the gifts on Christmas. They are so excited. My daughters are not too spoiled. I don’t just get them everything they want. They have to work for it, too. Be on their best behavior or I will hold out. I hope they read this. ONO KINEGRINDS

BY HEIDI KING HEIDI@MAUITIME.COM

Middle Eastern Plate wth Baked Falafel

Co-managers, Dylan Schwarzmeier and Kedar Davis

Pigging Out at Veg Out Plus the best chocolate cake you’ll ever have I’m a pseudo-vegetarian. I believe strongly in the many health, earth and animal benefits of being a strict veggie and at one time even headed towards vegan. Unfortunately, I also feel that meat and dairy are sooo good. Though being a vegetarian doesn’t necessarily mean I have to give up cheese and eggs, I do need to put down the Spam musubi and pass on the grilled ono, served on jasmine rice with veggies and black bean sauce. The horror! Despite my good intentions and ability to shy away from the kalua pork, I still find the island’s seafood irresistible. What’s a person in my position to do, when you crave for the tastiest of foods, but would like to be a conscientious eater? Consider Veg Out in Haiku. I found the place in our dining listing months ago and recently found the time to check it out. The menu is completely vegetarian with vegan options. You can choose from pizzas, wraps, sandwiches, lasagna, Middle Eastern plates, salads or soup. It’s a small place with about six tables. There’s a cooler in the corner with beverages, a stand near the door with soy and hot sauce options, and under the counter is a slew of reading information about miscellaneous classes and health, even a DVD outlining reasons to go vegetarian. Whenever I try a new place with a friend, I order as much food as possible without being ridiculous. My companion left the decision making up to me,

but hinted at a desire for Greek pizza. When the smoke cleared, we had four paper plates in front of us. There was the Greek pizza—a disc six inches in diameter holding mozzarella, feta, kalamata olives, tomato and eggplant ($6.50). Then there were the Pad Thai Noodles: spicy rice noodles, tofu, veggies and peanuts ($7.95). And the Falafel wrap, containing falafel, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and hummus in a whole wheat tortilla with tahini cilantro dipping sauce ($6.25). And then there was the Vegan chocolate cake ($4.25), for dessert. Everything tasted fresh. The pizza

sauce was surprisingly light and zesty. The pad Thai noodles were kinda sweet, kinda spicy and very sticky. Neither of us fell in love with the falafel wrap—I think it was the tortilla. It was fresh, don’t get me wrong, but the whole wheat flavor killed the hummus and falafel tastes I desired. But the dipping sauce was divine and we used some of it on the pizza. After we scarfed the pizza, inhaled the pad Thai and picked at the wrap, there

was no room left for the cake. I brought it home with me and once the bloated, ate-too-much feeling passed, finally took a fork to it. Soft, creamy, chocolatey goodness melted in my mouth and I thought, “This is the best chocolate cake I have ever had.” The cake serving was too much for me to put down in one sitting. So the next morning I brought it to a friend—who is also something of a chocolate connoisseur—to get her opinion. “Mmmm…” she said, taking a bite. “This cake is like steak.” “How?” I asked. “It’s hearty,” She said. “I know! How do they get that goodness in there and still be vegan?!” “I dunno, man,” she said. “I don’t know.” MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Bears on Bikes Sunday (Dec. 17), 9 a.m., starts on Kàahumanu Ave. (Burger King parking lot), Kahului [FUNDRAISER] Here’s an event that includes two great subjects: motorcycles and charity. Toys for Tots started in 1947 with the help of Bill and Diane Hendricks. Diane asked Bill to deliver a handmade doll to a charity that helped children in need. Bill found no such organization at the time and decided to start his own. He and fellow Marine Reservists gathered and distributed five thousand toys that year in Los Angeles. Being such a success, the Marine Corps adopted the idea. These days the annual bike run is nationwide and enlists the help of various motorcycle clubs and charities alike. Street Bikers United Hawaii is organizing this year’s Toys for Tots bike run for Maui County. The route starts in Kahului then goes up to Kula for a stop, with the final destination being Mulligan’s in Wailea. All motorcyclists are welcome. To participate, just bring a new, unwrapped toy to the starting point of the run. For info, call Street Bikers United at 878-3103. [KEITH BENEDICT]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Civic Doobie

A Muvment to Party

Friday (Dec. 15), 6 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center

Friday (Dec. 15), 10 p.m. at Manana Garage

[REGGAE] It’s good to see the Lahaina Civic Center being put to good use. Maxi Priest will be headlining this show. The Jamaican born, British citizen broke into the U.S. Top 40 in 1988 with the song “Wild World,” originally recorded by Cat Stevens. Priest has been making records ever since. Another hit in the U.S. was the song “That Girl,” a duet with Shaggy in ‘96. Hoku Award winners, Ekolu, are playing as well. If you’ve spent any time listening to local radio, then you know just how big this band is right now. If you haven’t heard, I’m here to tell you the band enjoys lots of airtime. Joining the lineup in this show is Inna Vision. Inna Vision is known for their distinctly “roots” sound, along with a massive following in the Hawaiian Islands. Tickets: $30 in advance, $35 at door. For tickets, call Solid Clothing in Kaahumanu Center, 392-7136. [KEITH BENEDICT]

[MUSIC/FASHION] A movement is defined as a collective effort for a social or political reform. It’s also defined as the stylistic representation of motion in a work of art. Translation? A new line of hoodies and T-shirts, and a slammin’ party to premiere them, of course! The graphic design-textilephotographic-artistic lovechild of Kainoa, Sean and Karl, Muvment is a super young upstart clothing company intent on designing fashion as a form of expression as well as a creative outlet to educate and perpetuate cultural awareness. They’re utilizing local artists for limited edition tees, eventually paving the way to gear your bod with expression from head to toe. Their premier party will feature local roots reggae greats, Inna Vision, the fabu hip-hop crew of Amphibeus Tungs (pictured right), the bluesy rock powerhouse of Voodoo Suns and Guerilla Jazz. $15. Manana Garage, 33 Lono St., Kahului, 873-0220.

Legendary Piano Guy

Tired of the Same Ole?

Monday, (Dec. 18), 7 p.m. at A&B Amphitheater

[DEBUT OF “STAYING IN”] I like to go out. My desire to go dancing and/or interacting with abundant groups of people is surpassed only by my love for having a good, deep conversation with a new and interesting stranger. Maui is not exactly the best place to satisfy these types of cravings. My friends and acquaintances are constantly reminding me that I am a Calendar Editor and that I should be full of ideas for a night on the town. But, let’s face it: when your options are limited to: a reggae band, a vomitsmelling bar full of tourists and booty-call hunters, the same DJ you saw last week or driving to another part of the island for similar options, sometimes refraining altogether just seems like a better idea. No disrespect to local entertainers, but absence makes the heart grow fonder. So for this week’s picks, I give you… drum roll please… Staying In! (Next week: Staying In Ideas #1 & 2) [HK]

[ROCK/POP] When I went to work on Friday, I asked two of my colleagues what their favorite Billy Joel song is. It became the topic of discussion—and this week’s staff box question. I always put entirely too much thought into my answers, but I just don’t want to put something out there that isn’t true. So, in order to do some research, I went to iTunes and looked up Billy Joel. I was sort of looking for the “River of Dreams” song, but what I found was way better! I forgot how many of Billy’s songs I completely adore; “Uptown Girl” is a classic, but “Longest Time” and “Still Rock ‘n Roll” are fun, sing-song bricks in the building of my adolescence. Joel has been creating music for over 30 years. Isn’t that the definition of legendary? A&B Amphitheater is located in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Tickets: $82. Slipping Inspiration in San Francisco Will Smith takes his son slumming From the looks of Will Smith’s downtrodden character in The Pursuit of Happyness, the only place for the capable actor’s career to go is down. Smith plays Chris Gardner, a hangdog salesman of specialized xray equipment whose trifling wife Linda (Thandie Newton) abandons him and their five-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) when the family’s financial situation gets tough. Although at the end of his rent-paying rope, Chris takes up a non-paying six-month internship at the Dean Witter brokerage firm in hopes securing a full-time job at the end of his apprenticeship.

This Sisyphean movie, based on a profile on television’s 20/20, succeeds in portraying 1980’s era San Francisco as a deceptively appealing city with a flaky underbelly inhabited by desperate hippies and homeless people. But it’s the picture’s overtly grave tone that makes it about as

First Light This week’s lineup at the Castle Theater THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14

Drama. A speculative meditation about what happened on the fourth plane hijacked on September 11, 2001, in a comprehensive and emotional film that is praised for being “intense, stunning” “respectful, accomplished” and “as raw as an exposed nerve” by critics.

2 p.m. Little Miss Sunshine (R/101 min.) Drama/Comedy. A riotous romp through America by way of an old VW bus driven by a hapless motivational speaker (Greg Kinnear) and his colorful oddball family (Toni Collette, Alan Arkin, Steve Carell, Paul Dano and Abigail Breslin) of Proust scholars, porn lovers and pageant winner wannabes. 5 p.m. The Last King of Scotland (R/121 min.) Drama/Thriller. A cinematic feast of political betrayal and Ugandan violence that is being lauded (Oscar, Oscar, Oscar!) for Forest Whitaker’s complex portrayal of one of the world’s most notoriously brutal dictators, Idi Amin, as seen through the eyes of a young (fictional) Scottish doctor, who is also getting it on with one of Amin’s wives.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints

7:30 p.m. Into Great Silence (Unrated/164 min.) Documentary. A glimpse into the Carthusian monastery of France (built in 1688), where visitors are not allowed and the monks who reside there have dedicated their lives to God and silence. Shh…

ployed uncle, Tony. Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, George Carlin and Bonnie Hunt. 2 p.m. Marie Antoinette (PG-13/118 min.) Drama. It’s directed by Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Virgin Suicides), was shot at Versailles, stars Kirsten Dunst and Rip Torn, features The Cure and Bow Wow Wow on its soundtrack and is a biopic of the lady who said, “Let them eat cake.” Really, what else do you need to know?

2 p.m. A Prairie Home Companion (PG-13/105 min.) Musical/Comedy. A classic Altman look into Americana that captures the last gasps of one of radio’s longest running programs. The late-great director Robert Altman’s last film, with Meryl Streep, Garrison Keillor, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson and many others. 5 p.m. Apocalypto (R/130 min.) Drama/Action. Uh-oh, it’s another Mel Gibson historical tour de force—this time about the last days of the Mayans—which means an ambitious movie with serious guts and glory, and a healthy dollop of good ole Hollywood values.

5 p.m. Bobby (R/120 min.) Drama. A fictionalized account of the day RFK was shot, featuring an impressive all-star cast (Anthony Hopkins, Lindsay Lohan, Elijah Wood, Helen Hunt and Sharon Stone) and directed by Emilio Estevez.

9:30 p.m. Golden Door (Rating TBD. 120 min.) Drama/Foreign. Italy’s submission to this year’s Academy Awards about a family who emigrates to the U.S. from Sicily. Stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Vincenzo Amato.

7:30 p.m. Pan’s Labyrinth (R/112 min.) Drama/Fantasy/Foreign. Mexico’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language that depicts the parallel universe between a group of rebels in wartorn Spain in the 1940’s and a young girl’s fantastical journey into the heart of an overgrown labyrinth where she meets an ancient satyr.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) This week’s all about almost-lost, nearly-forgotten opportunities. You thought you totally missed the window, that any chance you had to get that apartment, job, lay, relationship, etc., was completely over. It probably was, except for a peculiar twist of fate, or someone’s whim. Sometimes shit just happens, and there’s nothing you can do to encourage or prevent it. Sometimes it’s even good shit, like the stuff you’re about to experience. Now you’re about to get a second (or third, or fifth) chance, which you couldn’t possibly have expected (or even dared to hope for). Don’t blow it (again).

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The good news is that the wound will heal. The bad news is that the medicine is almost worse than the injury. That scratch is infected. Unfortunately, the pills you have to take, while clearing up that stubborn but superficial flesh wound, will keep you within 50 paces of the toilet. So you’re going to suffer to heal that abrasion. Sometimes you have to go through hardship to be made whole again. I know it sucks, but it’s still better than the alternative. When you put it in perspective (don’t heal the scratch, you eventually lose the limb), enduring a week of the runs isn’t all that bad.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I may have been a bit harsh on you last week, Aquarius, and for that I apologize. It’s only because I have such high hopes for you. I live to see other people fulfill their potential (and discover there’s always further they could go), and I’m disappointed when people slack off in its exploration. It’s okay to cruise once in a while and just enjoy where you’re at. But foregoing opportunities to take yourself to the next level because you’re just plain lazy is something I can’t just let you do. This week, work on finding that balance between the pure aimless enjoyment of life and taking steps towards maximizing that enjoyment.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You’re a bit of a drama queen. We’ve always known it. This week, you’ll finally admit it (to yourself). When you get a peek into that somewhat unflattering mirror, don’t be boring and react in stereotypical Piscean fashion by plunging into isolated depression, moping around doing unhealthy things until the shock fades from your mind. It’s no biggie; we’ve all had our moments of extreme theater. Freaking out is just making the label more true by generating even more drama. Taking a deep breath and acting with grace and humor is what it will take to finally outgrow it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I’m stuck in a Piscean rut; the last three guys I’ve dated have all been Fish. I’m sure the universe is just trying to teach me how to cope with needless complications, but I confess I miss hanging with you beautiful (and fantastically straightforward) Rams. This week, spread the love around. Find a Pisces and give them a lesson in forthrightness, simplicity and just plain having fun. And find those the Fish have been (unintentionally) torturing and help us out. We need some fun we don’t have to overthink, and you’re just the people to give it to us.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Recent studies have shown that women who suffer chronic anxiety or fear may be more susceptible to breast cancer, and that other emotional forces could influence our bodies in other ways, both good and bad. This is yet another reason why we should place our personal pursuits for happiness higher than those for financial security or other considerations. Sometimes, too much shit is going down for you to be really happy. But sometimes, being happy is just a matter of deciding to be, to stop focusing on the little shit in your life that’s not perfect, and to celebrate the many elements that are really great. This week, try that.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I have a friend who loves to soup up old cars. He’ll drive up in what looks like some old piece of junk, lift the hood and reveal a powerful engine transplanted from a sports car. You never know what might be hidden beneath the modest exteriors of his vehicles. Likewise, the old beaters you’ve been hanging around with might have similarly spectacular secrets hidden beneath what’s immediately apparent. Of course, to find out what juicy treasures they might actually have on offer means letting yourself get close enough to get a good look “under the hood.” That’s this week’s task.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I know how challenging it can be for you Crabs to leave your comfort zones for extended periods of time. I’m not deluded by your reputation as homebodies, though. I contend that Cancers are actually ideal explorers of the unknown, once they get used to the idea. Hermit crabs, after all, carry their homes on their backs. You could learn to, as well, if you try.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) There’s a blind kid who’s learned to use sonar to get around. He makes a clicking sound with his tongue and uses it to identify obstacles, find doorways, and so on. I’m incredibly impressed with how he’s managed to be resourceful enough to largely mitigate something that would daunt most of the rest of us. When you put your own problems (and shortcomings) into perspective, I’d wager that they’re more surmountable, than, say, blindness. In other words, why don’t you stop being daunted by them and just get over them?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) I like it when people are happy in their jobs. Too many people, however, feel stuck. They’re bitter where they are, yet they lack the courage, conviction or decisiveness to move on until they find what will make them happy. Meanwhile, they try to make everyone else unhappy along the way, by being total bitches to those they encounter, especially those who need something from them. This week, those poor slobs need a bit of kindness and understanding (and encouragement to change their situations), and you Virgos are just the ones to deliver it.

I know a Libra girl who’s very pretty. She’s smart and talented. She’s also insufferable. Because she’s sexy, intelligent and gifted, she gets away with whatever she wants. As a result, she’s become selfish, self-absorbed, and snobby. She gets away with it because there are always a few sad sacks willing to put up with a lot of bullshit to have a pretty face around. But she hasn’t become a very good person, because she hasn’t had to. This week, regard all your assets as obstacles to your personal development, and all your flaws as the best thing that ever happened to you, especially if they help you develop sensitivity, compassion and generosity.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Holiday shopping can be a bitch, especially for someone you know well. My problem is that I’m too specific about what I’m looking for. Then I’m either unable to find something that fits my too-detailed concept, or I can’t afford to actually buy it, because it’s too expensive. You’re shopping a bit too narrowmindedly as well, and this time I’m not referring to your attempts to find the perfect Christmas presents for your friends. May I suggest broadening the scope of your search, and maybe considering something (or someone) that doesn’t actually fit in a box?

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

I swear I do things other than watch television. I know you remember the times—hell, they weren’t that long ago—when I would go out with girlfriends, or by myself, and wreak havoc on the fragile ecosystems of Maui’s various bars and nightclubs. And I still do that, on occasion. But this year’s holidays are taking a toll. Somehow it seems the tight-knit clusters of friends who had previously united for holiday merriment have scattered, given way to budding families of their own or finally making the long trip back to the mainland. I recall endless holiday parties and mistletoe-kissing last year, piñatas filled with joints and condoms, baking chocolate covered pears with a DJ-crush, and happily cavorting around San Francisco—oh wait, that was the year before. Last year must’ve been when I was chillin’ with the Sugar Shack girls in Lahaina, drinking whiskey on the beach and watching endless Sex and the City marathons. Hmm, no... that was three years ago. Actually, I can’t remember what I did last year. But anyway, this year’s been a little off. So when I found myself in hibernation mode on Sunday, I decided to tune into what the tube was offering in the way of Christmas movies. Yes, next week I’ll look into joining the neighborhood caroling crew but for now, this was my concerted effort to instill (in myself) some semblance of holiday spirit. Naturally, I turned to the Lifetime channel. I got sucked into His and Her Christmas (2005) before I knew what was happening. And really, how could I not? A small-town columnist (Dina Meyer) finds a way to save her paper from a big-city daily intent on swallowing it by infusing her column with heartfelt confessions and personal ruminations on spending the holidays alone. Subsequently—‘cause it’s what happens in the real world—her popularity skyrockets, she’s mentioned on TV newscasts, gets tons of fan mail and her email inbox overflows with nothing but effusive praise. Also, the big-city paper’s very hot columnist dude (David Sutcliffe), with whom she’d struck a competitive rivalry, falls madly in love with her and they go off to decorate their Christmas tree with the billboards and Pulitzers of their young, hot, successful, writerly love. Could happen. Couldn’t it? Yeah, well… the cast of the next movie, Noel (2004), enticed me to press on: Susan Sarandon is a lonely woman caring for her Alzheimer’s-ridden mother, whose hospital room is across the way from Robin Williams, who plays an expriest; Penelope Cruz is the fiancée of jealous Paul Walker, who is told he is the reincarnation of the wife of Alan Arkin. Of course, it all takes place on Christmas Eve in New York and Chazz Palminteri directs it. And it might’ve choked me up just a little. Cheesy, heartwarming holiday sentimentality generally does that to me. That, and a really good rack of lamb with mint jelly. I thought I’d fare better with the movie that followed, On the 2nd Day of Christmas (1997), as it starred yummy Mark Ruffalo (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, We Don’t Live Here Anymore) and adorable Mary Stuart Masterson (Benny & Joon, Fried Green Tomatoes). Uh, but no. This one was about a conning young woman and her six-year-old niece who pickpocket their way into the heart of the department store security dude who arrests them. Oh, and it’s during the Christmas shopping frenzy. So naturally, they all live happily ever after. Or at least until the big New Year’s Day sale. Needless to say, by Monday I was feeling decidedly more jubilant. Samantha Campos is currently toasting her friends in San Antonio, steadfastly refusing their shots of Jagermeister, Redbull and eggnog. MTW
