LUSCIOUS LINGERIE

Hello Anthony, Mr. Maui Time Weekly, I read your article on DOCARE (“Those who DOCARE,” Dec. 8, 2005) and it’s totally inaccurate! And DOCARE does NOT know the law, okay, and DOCARE doesn’t do shit, okay, and I know this for a fact, okay, cuz I know because I worked hand in hand with them. So you’re writing something that paints a pretty picture of people who are not doing their goddamned jobs. So I think before you write an article you should, like, make sure that they know the laws, okay, cuz number one they do not know the law, okay? Number two, they don’t do their jobs, okay? So this thing you’re writing is basically all bullshit and I’m really disappointed to read you, the Maui Time, and come up like this with a big bogus article about DOCARE. And, you know, it’s terrible, man. It’s an insult to, you know, all the local people on Maui that you do this and with disrespect to the environment. And also you need to know that DOCARE is not a lawful authority: DOCARE is just a branch of the United States Business Corporation, okay. And the state and the DOCARE does not OWN any land, okay. So you better get your story straight. -Anonymous, via voicemail The Editor responds: First off, reporter Cheryl Ambrozic-Mooz wrote the article in question, not I. Secondly, in the absence of specific charges to back up your pretty serious allegations, there’s not much I can say except to reiterate our reporting that the state’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) is the overworked, underfunded enforcement arm of the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources. We never reported that either DOCARE “owns” any lands because they

don’t, though I’d love to know more about this “United States Business Corporation” of which you speak. Sounds pretty shady to me.

DOES CARE I would to comment on your weekly astrology column and your writer, Mr. Mason McGraw. I find his outlook and passion for his writing very reassuring and uplifting. I read the astrology column (Astro Mana) every week like other people read the sports and business sections faithfully. I look forward to his column every week. Keep up the great writing. Also I enjoy reading your weekly. Very informative, educational and bright. -Alyka Nakoa-Clark, Wailuku Just a quick note in these hectic holiday times to thank you for your coverage on our store, Banana Wind, in the most recent issue in the West Side Culture article (Local Gift Guide, Dec. 15, 2005). We feel flattered to be in this article and appreciate the publicity! The happiest of holidays to you and your staff. MAHALO! -Nina Mehring, owner, Banana Wind, via email

ehbrah@mauitime.com Eh, tweaking thieves at guardrails in Lahaina: please give me a chance to find you. I love how you decided to get your tweaking fix by taking my address off my ID and then robbing my home while I was sleeping. Cool move, you FUCKING JUNKIE! By the way, since you’re just stupid junkies you helpfully left your fingerprints all over my home and truck. I’ve hired a detective and there are a handful of cops on your ass as we speak. But to be honest I’d rather keep the law out of it, and am willing to pay anyone $1,000 to set up a meeting with you. I’m asking, no, pleading for the chance to meet you face to face. It truly would replace all the Christmas presents you stole from under our tree. That being said, I will not stop until you and your tweaking friends are caught.

Armchair Warriors Why soldiers shouldn’t just follow orders

How the Ale House helped rescue Moose’s

If we are, as Jean-Paul Sartre said, defined by our actions, most of the blame for the murder of more than 100,000 Iraqis belongs to our top government officials. But Bush’s armchair warriors couldn’t have invaded Iraq without a compliant and complicit United States military—one that, it should be noted, is all volunteer. These individuals, who enjoy free will, fire the guns and drop the bombs. If personal responsibility is to have any meaning, the men and women of our armed forces have to be held individually accountable for the carnage. “Supporting our troops while opposing their actions may seem contradictory,” argues Joshua Frank in the antiwar.com article. “The duties of U.S. soldiers in Iraq are wrong and many may be committing horrible crimes against humanity. True. But soldiers are mostly not bad people (though, of course, some are).” How is a person who voluntarily commits “horrible crimes against humanity” not a “bad person”? Even if U.S. forces were not violating the rules of war in Iraq—torturing, maiming and murdering POWs, robbing and subjecting civilians to collective punishment, dropping white phosphorus and depleted uranium bombs on civilian targets—the war itself, based on false pretenses and opposed by the United Nations, would remain a gross violation of American and international law. Soldiers, they say, must obey orders. However, “just following orders” wasn’t an acceptable excuse at the Nuremberg trials, where the charges included waging a war of aggression. Do our government’s poorly paid contract killers deserve our “support” for blindly following orders? Not according to the military itself. The U.S. Army’s “Law of Land Warfare,” taught in basic training, says that U.S. troops must always refuse an unlawful

order—one that violates the Constitution or other U.S. laws, is not reasonably linked to military necessity or is issued by someone without the proper authority. Even passivity in the face of wrongdoing breaks military law. “If you are responsible for what’s going on around you, and it is going unlawfully, and you know that [and] do nothing about it, I’m going to prosecute you,” says Bill Eckhardt, a retired army colonel and professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law who prosecuted most of the perpetrators of the My Lai massacre. “So basically, you’ve gotta be a whistleblower.” Congress never declared war against Iraq. As an unelected imposter, George W. Bush did not enjoy authority under the War Powers Act to commit American forces abroad. Concentration camps at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere violate the Geneva Conventions, which as treaty obligations are binding under U.S. law. Iraq did not threaten the United States. Iraq is not the subject of a U.N.-led international police action. Thus, by several measures, the war is illegal. Every order to deploy a soldier, aviator or sailor to fight in Iraq is by definition an unlawful order, one that he or she is legally and morally bound to refuse. What are members of the military to do? They should certainly refuse to applaud when Bush uses them as backdrops to his logo-ridden pro-death pep rallies. Moreover, just as Muslim leaders were pressured to speak out against Islamist extremists after 9/11, soldiers ought to step forward to condemn the atrocities at Bagram, Fallujah and Guantánamo in letters to newspapers and other public venues. Not an armchair warrior

In his successful defense of Moose McGillycuddy’s against three over-service charges at the Dec. 1, 2005 Liquor Control Board of Adjudication hearing, attorney Dave Jorgensen tried a number of novel approaches. One of the more interesting was to shove a court ruling against the LC right back in the board’s faces. Way back in the spring of 2003, the board found the Kahului Ale House guilty on three counts of over-serving customer Gary Aplanalp. Rather than accept the guilty findings, Ale House sued the LC in Hawai’i’s 2nd Judicial Circuit Court. On May 5, 2004, Judge Joel August ruled that the LC had been a little too quick with the guilty verdicts. His ruling listed six new findings the board was “required” to make. They included establishing the actual time the Ale House last served Aplanalp, specifying “the indicia of intoxication that licensees are expected to look for with respect to customers” and determining whether Aplanalp was already drunk when he last got a drink at the Ale House. Rather than do all that, the board simply dismissed the case. Jorgensen wanted to admit the ruling as evidence in his defense of Moose’s, which was up on identical charges. Jorgensen insisted that Judge August’s ruling applies to all over-service cases brought before the board of adjudication—that the LC must not bring charges against a licensee unless it can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a customer actually got intoxicated at that establishment. Prosecutor Andrew Martin and Corporation Counsel Tracy FujitaVillarosa disagreed, saying the ruling was irrelevant because it applied only to the Ale House matter. The board hesitated on admitting the ruling. Board member Lance Collins then suggested that the board go into closed session to discuss its powers regarding the ruling—five of the eight members agreed with him, helped no doubt by his threat to simply air all his concerns in public if they refused. The executive session was closed so we don’t know what they said, but when they reopened the hearing 15 minutes later the entire board voted unanimously to accept the ruling into evidence.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, DEC. 14 Nice to see some pretty good shots of the old fake whaling ship Carthaginian in all the local papers this morning. It was also nice to read that the Lahaina Restoration Foundation—which was responsible for the upkeep of the Carthaginian, until it decided the boat was too expensive and just stopped maintaining it—wants to move a Hawaiian sailing canoe into the Carthaginian’s old berth. What wasn’t nice was driving into Lahaina Town this morning and seeing a cruise ship tender tied up there instead. Man, they don’t waste any time… Speaking of wasting time, U.S. Congressman Ed Case (D, Hawai’i) sent out a press release announcing that he’d just today introduced a bill that would allow the Hansen’s disease patients who still live at Kalaupapa on Molokai to build a memorial to the thousands of people who were exiled there. “It is fitting and appropriate that our nation, through the National Park Service, ensures that they are never forgotten through the establishment of a memorial,” said Case in the release. Absolutely. Never forget. Just one question: how come it’s taken this long to come up with this brilliant idea?

THURSDAY, DEC. 15 So six out of the six Maui County Ethics Board members have decided to sweep away any and all objections Councilwoman Michelle Anderson raised when her colleagues recently appointed a Maui Land and Pineapple Company lobbyist to the county’s General Plan Advisory Committee. “I feel we need to have input from the companies that provide a lot of business, provide a lot of employment,”

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

board member Harriette Holt says in today’s Maui News. Fellow board member Jim A. Stewart even told the paper that local government is favoring “concerned citizens” while “the corporate side is generally the one with the bull’s eye on it… Both sides are equal opposites,” he said. “They both should be heard.” Wow. Citizens who advocate slow growth development policies—which entails scrutinizing endless environmental impact statements and attending day-long planning hearings all while trying to hold down a regular job—are “equal” to publicly traded corporations that hand out thousands of dollars in campaign contributions every year while employing people making six and seven-figure salaries? Really? Man, I had no clue how easy it was to sit on an ethics board.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

FRIDAY, DEC. 16 In a rare show of strength, the U.S. Senate sucker-punched the Bush Administration today, rejecting an attempt to make permanent some of the most draconian, anti-civil liberties aspects of the Patriot Act, like allowing federal investigators to run barefoot through library records and conducting so-called roving wiretaps (both Hawai’i Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye voted against the act extensions). But for those of you who believe Bush and his minions when they say that dumping the Patriot Act will make us vulnerable to terrorists, take heart in today’s New York Times story exposing the Bush Administration’s post-Sept. 11 action allowing the super-secret National Security Agency (NSA) to eavesdrop on domestic phone calls and e-mails without having to get a warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court—an absolutely illegal practice usually only sought by tin-plated dictators like Saddam Hussein who feel the need to spy on their own people. When courts or long-established civil

liberties stand in the way of his definition of “public safety,” Bush simply ignores them and does as it pleases in secret. Remember, this is the guy who justified his invasion of Iraq using bogus intelligence; authorized U.S. forces to torture prisoners in Cuba, Iraq and Afghanistan; opened secret prisons in Eastern Europe; and okayed assassinations of suspected terrorists. So far he’s not given a damn about the U.S. Constitution—why should he start now?

In other news, the Honolulu Advertiser led off with the revelation that our very own Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) spied on Democrat Patsy Mink before, during and after she became a U.S. congresswoman in 1964 representing Hawai’i’s Second District. They apparently never investigated her, but did manage to file

Even Democratic Congressman Ed Case thinks Bush’s allowing the NSA to ignore the longestablished FISA courts when it spies on Americans is a bad idea. Ed Case! He just voted to make the Patriot Act permanent! Anyway, him being Ed Case and all he’s totally cool with Bush spying on Americans—“I accept the President’s argument that, in fighting the reality of terrorism in our post-9/11 world, we cannot any longer distinguish neatly in intelligence gathering between foreign and domestic, nor even between wartime and peacetime,” he insisted in a press release today. But Case takes umbrage at Bush’s brazen disregard for FISA courts—which Bush has said will continue. “We have never given our presidents carte blanche to outright suspend basic constitutional rights and civil liberties in times of war just because they want to,” Case said. “It is clear that if we don’t step in, swiftly and effectively, the President will conclude that his administration can simply continue and perhaps expand domestic surveillance without independent judicial supervision.”

away a couple reports from confidential informants labeling her a communist. The reason? Well, your guess is as a good as mine, but possible explanations include that she was a liberal, anti-war, Asian-American endorsed by the International Longshoreman’s & Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU). Any one of those chararacteristics would have perturbed noted FBI boss and dress-wearer J. Edgar Hoover. “Another informant who attended the conference stated he had known Patsy Takemoto [Mink] quite well and remembered her as one of a group who, during evening, sat round a campfire and sang Russian folk and revolutionary songs as well as Japanese and Chinese communistic songs,” wrote an unknown FBI agent to Hoover deputy Cartha de Loach on Nov. 6, 1964. “He said that in his opinion Patsy Takemoto was a communist sympathizer.”

TUESDAY, DEC. 20 Doesn’t that Patsy Mink communist nonsense seem so quaint now? Anthony Pignataro believes that it is morally indefensible to shave more than once a day.

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Dec. 10, 2005 Honolulu Advertiser story about her administration’s new natural disaster preparedness package: “Hawai’i has been very fortunate, unlike some of our sister states, but we are not immune. It’s only a matter of time before we get hit again. Part of our success, a major part, is planning for that next occurrence.”

What she didn’t say: Disaster preparation is an interesting thing—it’s never controversial because it’s supposedly above partisan politics, it’s also something we never hear about until election time. In any case, the peril of Lingle’s public warning of statewide vulnerability doesn’t match her paltry appropriations wish: just $4 million to upgrade emergency shelters, instead of the $35 million the Advertiser says state Civil Defense officials actually want. -Anthony Pignataro

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD TEEN WHISTLE British store owners seeking to drive away obnoxious, congregating teenagers have turned to security consultant Howard Stapleton’s recent invention, similar to a dog whistle, that emits a high-frequency sound audible to most teens but few older people. “The Mosquito” (it’s “small and annoying,” Stapleton told a New York Times reporter, who vouched that she couldn’t hear it, either) emits what one merchant called a pulsating chirp, not painful but surely irritating. A professor of neurophysiology verified that the ability to hear high frequency dissipates with age but that some people in their 20s and 30s could probably still hear it.

LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE Robbin Doolin, 31, accidentally fell from her car while driving on U.S. 71 in Kansas City, Mo., in July when she opened the door to spit and leaned too far. She quickly jumped up and chased her car, which left the road and ran down an embankment. And in Amarillo, Texas, Bobby Reynolds, 74, and his son Gary, 43, were hospitalized in July after an incident in which their car got stuck on tracks at a railroad crossing. After unsuccessfully trying the move it, reported the Amarillo Globe-News, they somehow fell asleep in the car and were later hit by a train.

BOOK LEARNING OVERRATED A judge in Santa Maria, Calif., ordered Nobel-prize-winning physicist John Robert Schrieffer, 74, to prison for two years in November after he acknowledged that he killed a man and injured seven others when he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, at more than 100 mph. Schrieffer had nine previous speeding tickets and was

driving at the time on a suspended Florida license. He also admitted that he lied to police about the cause of the collision. Schrieffer and two others shared the 1972 Nobel for their theory of electrical superconductivity.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS A November paper by Sheffield (England) University education lecturer Pat Sikes argued that not all teacher-pupil romances are bad and that, in fact, sometimes “the seductive nature and ‘erotic charge’ often characteristic of ‘good’ teaching” can provoke a “positive and exciting response.” Dr. Sikes, 50, who met her now-husband in 1970 when she was 14 and he was a 22-year-old history teacher, estimated that 1,500 pupil-teacher affairs develop in Britain every year. FirstLight Film Festival Bill Murray Brings Flowers Talking with the master of wry tone By Cole Smithey In Jim Jarmusch’s enjoyable film Broken Flowers Bill Murray plays Don Johnston, an aging bachelor who goes on a crosscountry journey to visit four of his ex-girlfriends (played by Francis Conroy, Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange and Tilda Swinton) in search of a son he may have sired 20 years ago. Don’s bizarre experiences during his unannounced visits make for some terrific minimalist cinema that serves to crystallize Bill Murray’s sardonic post-modern screen persona as emblematic of American adult male consciousness. Bill Murray’s brand of humor is something to be savored for its every delicate trace of beaten-to-the-punch wisdom and effortless resolve.

Maui Time Weekly: With Lost In Translation and Broken Flowers you’ve perfected your minimalist style of humor. How is it that you are able to do so much more with so much less than most actors? Bill Murray: I think in my case the minimalism comes from a deterioration of ability, an erosion of skills, so I just have less and less to give all the time. This is kind of a psychological detective story, so a little bit at a time keeps you intrigued. There’s not a lot of dialogue for me. I basically have to get beaten up by these women through most of the movie, and have to be surprised at what the information is, so most of what I give is just being stung by whatever they say. It’s tough to go back and meet the loves of your life. You kind of misremember exactly how well it went at the time, and when you go back you’re going to be affected by, not only the hurt that you’ve caused, but also by the love that you may have passed on. If you’ve forgotten any of it, it still affects you when you see them.

Have you ever tried to track down an old flame? Well, I’ve tried but I usually decide to try in the middle of the night in a strange town, so I’ve not had great success with it but they’ve always been interesting evenings— always. I don’t recommend it for most people, but I think we all have someone that we think, “Maybe I didn’t give myself or that person enough of a chance.” I think that I think about people in my past a lot more all the time. Once again, I think that’s the mind eroding and the deterioration of my sanity, but having done it in this film I would

say it’s a far more precarious proposition than I would have guessed before.

Your character in Broken Flowers suffers from a kind of mid-life crisis. Can you relate? I have crises on a regular basis, and they’re not suggested by how old I am or by how much living I’ve done—it’s just the kind of living I’ve been doing that’s been a real problem. When you’re not engaged in whatever your particular problem is then a part of the clothing that you wear can be a jolly way of behavior. You can be very happy-golucky about something you’re avoiding. How often do you hear, “Oh, he seemed so positive and upbeat all the time, I can’t believe he killed his entire family.” I think Tilda Swinton made the point about Broken Flowers being about a question and never really getting the answer, and that is really an interesting design for this character. You just keep returning to the questions again, and that’s sobering because we’re in a result oriented world and if you don’t get them, and you only get questions, then that gets away from your “happy.” MTW Broken Flowers runs Thursday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.

Killing Time

Musical Score

Steven Spielberg turns counterterrorist in Munich By Anthony Pignataro It started at the end of the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, when a group of Arab terrorists calling themselves Black September broke into the Olympic Village Apartments and captured 11 Israeli athletes. The terrorists killed two athletes during the initial struggle and one Israeli succeeded in killing a terrorist. When the terrorists then tried to flee to Cairo with their remaining nine hostages, West German commandos rushed them at Furstenfeldbruck Airport. The ensuing gun battle ended with all the terrorists and hostages getting killed. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir’s subsequent response is the subject of Steven Spielberg’s controversial new movie Munich. Gathering a list of 11 Arabs who allegedly played a role in the initial abductions, Meir dispatched death squads into Europe to kill them. Trumpeted as an Oscar contender before anyone even screened it, Munich stars Eric Bana, Geoffrey Rush and Daniel Craig, who was recently named the next James Bond. Munich has earned both praise and derision for being too even-handed. “I’m always in favor of Israel responding strongly when it’s threatened,” Spielberg said in the Dec. 12, 2005 issue of Time. “At the same time, a response to a response doesn’t really solve anything. It just creates a perpetualmotion machine. There’s been a quagmire of blood for blood for many decades in that region. Where does it end? How can it end?” That kind of moral and pragmatic equation of Arab terrorism with Israeli targeted killings has infuriated at least one commentator. “Worse, Munich prefers a discussion of counterterrorism to a discussion of terrorism; or it thinks that they are the same discussion,” wrote Leon Wieseltier, The New Republic’s literary editor, in that magazine’s Dec. 19, 2005 issue. “This is an opinion that only people who are not responsible for the safety of other people can hold.” Wholly justified or not, the killings weighed heavily on the Israeli assassins, at least as far as Spielberg’s source material is concerned. Much of Munich is based on the 1984 book Vengeance, written by investigative reporter George Jonas in cooperation with a man known only as “Avner,” the leader of the most successful of Israel’s hit teams. Avner’s team operated for a year with little, if any, government scrutiny. Developing their own underground contacts and intelligence, they used whatever methods were most expedient to kill their targets. Though operating under orders not to take out anyone unless they made positive identification, the hit team still ended up killing individuals not on their list—and not always by accident. That’s the risk whenever a state bypasses its accepted justice mechanisms—jury trials, court-ordered warrants, due process and such—and skips right to summary execution. It’s a risk the Bush Administration, for instance, seems completely willing to run as it constantly invokes the specter of 9/11.

On Nov. 3, 2002, a CIA-controlled Predator unmanned aircraft fired a Hellfire missile at a car in Yemen, killing all five men inside. One of them, the actual target of the attack, was a suspected Al Qaeda leader who’d helped plan the 2000 bombing of the destroyer U.S.S. Cole. Not much is known about the other four men, except that one of them was an American citizen suspected of involvement in an alleged Al Qaeda cell in Buffalo, New York. In contrast to the deep secrecy surrounding the Israeli killings, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz went on CNN a few days after the Yemen operation, calling it “a very successful tactical operation” that would “keep the pressure on” terrorists everywhere. Hopefully we won’t have to wait 30 years for someone to make a movie about that act of state-sanctioned killing. MTW

What’s going on at the Candlelight Café between screenings By Samantha Campos If you’re going to see any of the movies at this year’s FirstLight Film Festival, you might as well go for the whole experience. That means, take your time! Get to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center early, buy your tickets, then go hang out in the Candlelight Café just outside of the Castle Theater. Grab a glass of wine or tea, a plate of food from whoever’s catering that night and enjoy the lineup of live music outdoors.

Thursday, Dec. 22: DJ Michael Fong—will be spinning country music to get you in the mood for notorious “gay cowboy” flick Brokeback Mountain. Friday, Dec.23: Gene Argel Trio—with Argel on keys and vocals, Michael Buono on drums and Bob Harrison on bass for soothing and fabulous, light jazz. (No films or live music Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 24-25.)

Munich runs Friday, Dec. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 26: Gene Argel and Makana Argel—doing a tribute to Cole Porter with lively pop, swing and jazz, before the rambunctious musical The Producers.

Tuesday, Dec. 27: Dr. Nat and Zack—Latin jazz in the CandleLight Café; while inside the Castle Theater, Debra Lynn sings an Italian aria accompanied by pianist Anne Durham before the romantic costume drama Casanova.

Back Story I made the mistake earlier this month by asking FirstLight co-director Barry Rivers for his favorite of the 50 films he’s booked for this year’s FirstLight Film Festival. Immediately asking if he could narrow his favorites down to just a “top five,” Rivers then rattled off eight titles. Now in its seventh year, FirstLight screens movies that have a shot at some kind of Academy Award. “It’s the best stuff I can get my hands on,” said Rivers, who also co-directs the Maui Film Festival. “It’s a celebration of cinema more than anything.” Movies range from the dark (Paradise Now, Munich) to lighthearted (Wallace & Gromit, The Family Stone) with a few blockbusters (King Kong, War of the Worlds) and dance documentaries (Ballets Russes, Rize) thrown in. This year we’ve decided to highlight a few of what we consider the more notable of this year’s films, as well as give you the usual entertainment and ticket info. As usual, all films screen at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater in Kahului. For more information, call 242-SHOW. For a complete list of this week’s movies and show times, see page 24. Enjoy.

Movie Truth

A rundown on this year’s FirstLight documentaries By Jen Russo I’ve always believed that truth is far more entertaining than fiction. Yet documentary filmmaking plays such a small part in our mainstream theaters. First Light is different, giving us an unusual and generous opportunity to see some of the year’s best documentaries. They include spectacular action, comedy and drama taken directly from the realm of our own human endeavor. Imagine you’re just 12 and you have to change your whole surroundings, exchanging extreme violence and drug dealing on the streets of Baltimore for a boarding school in Kenya, Africa. That’s The Boys of Baraka (Mon, Dec. 26, 9:30 p.m.), filmed by the two women of Loki Films. In Mad Hot Ballroom (Thu, Dec. 22, 5 p.m.) you follow the trials and tribulations of a ballroom dancing competition in New York City with a set of city kids. They undergo a rigorous 10-week training and compete against other schools at the ripe old age of 11. An all-female crew captured the drama of these small city lives as they focused on three public schools and their groups of dancers. For his film Favela Rising (Thu, Dec. 22, 9:30 p.m.), director Jeff Zimbalist wanted a story of a group of people who work within itself to overcome great adversity. His partner Matt Mochary found just that in Brazil in Rio’s violent slum, the Vigário Geral favela. Moving in, the filmmakers show how a drug trafficker turned social revolutionary uses Afro-Reggae music to rebuild the community. Now imagine yourself a paralyzed quadriplegic. Murderball (Thu, Dec. 29, 9:30 p.m.) delves into the lives of men on a quad rugby team—the film is so compelling and exciting you actually get quad envy. These men play hard and live harder. “The guys we got to know get up earlier, exercise longer, eat healthier, travel more, get hotter girlfriends, and most of them can kick our asses,” noted one of the filmmakers. Finding Emperor Penguin love in all the wrong places? These little non-flying, proswimming birds find their mates in the middle of an Antarctic desert. How do they make a nest? Easy: they don’t. But the trick is that their eggs can never touch the ice or they’ll freeze. Morgan Freeman explains how they manage it in March of the Penguins (Sun, Jan. 1, 12 p.m.), Warner Independent Pictures’ financially successful documentary. In Ghana, it’s common for a mother to poison her disabled child. Should you manage to escape that, your best hope is to live on the streets and get what you can from begging. Not a great future, right? Yet Emmanuel’s Gift (Sun, Jan. 1, 5 p.m.) tells the story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a disabled orphan who somehow manages to become a social visionary and outspoken advocate for the disabled in Ghana. And it all begins with a bike ride across his country. Oprah Winfrey liked it enough to narrate the film. Closer to home, Rize (Tue, Dec. 20, 5 p.m.; Fri, Dec. 23, 9:30 p.m.) shows us how Tommy the Clown saves his own skin and changes the future of dance and life in South Central Los Angeles. It’s a long journey that begins with clown makeup and birthday parties and ends with amazing abs and “Krumping” competitions that will blow you away. Director/producer David LaChappelle stuns us with dance that inspires urban youth to abandon their gang banging ways and change the world around them. MTW

Hustle & Flow What makes Terrence Howard tick By Cole Smithey

Santa’s Adult Helpers!

Writer/director Craig Brewer’s Memphis-centric debut Hustle & Flow won the Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. The term “buzz” doesn’t begin to describe the tidal wave of sustained praise the movie has garnered from critics and audiences alike. Hustle & Flow is a perfect example of an American independent film that boldly embraces its rarefied subject and squeezes out sparks from every scene and every line of subtext-rich dialogue. Terrence Howard’s emotionally devastating performance as Djay, a low down pimp making a last ditch effort to turn his life around with music, is steeped in American values of redemption and ambition. Since creating unforgettable sensations on television (NYPD Blue, Sparks) and in movies (Mr. Holland’s Opus, Dead Presidents) Terrence Howard has been called the next Denzel Washington. But that lofty compliment doesn’t begin to evince the actor’s slow burning intensity, inscrutable poise and thoroughly individual nature. Howard is an actor you absolutely cannot take your eyes off. He’s unpredictable and unknowable in ways that beckon to the early career days of Marlon Brando. It’s a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of in the coming years.

Happy Holidays! Maui Time Weekly: How does it feel to be called the next big thing due to your performance in Hustle & Flow? Terrence Howard: I feel great. Man, I feel great. Everybody smiling and looking at me like y’all know something I don’t. Like you got a car waiting for you when you get home.

How much of your life did you have to let go of in order to become your character? All of it. I had to let go of all of my sensibilities. I had to let my conscience go to bed for about a year. It wasn’t a question of me just being a character for a couple of months. I mean it would take a good year of demoralizing myself because that’s how I work. I mean, I wish I could just snap on and, you know, be somebody. But I had to go through all the motions. I had to start smoking cigarettes again. I watched a bunch of pornography again just to desensitize myself to my own conscience and my own sensibilities. It bothered me and I was telling them I was so afraid to do that. I was so afraid.

What do you hope your performance as Djay accomplishes? That maybe I’ll give some hope to the rest of the world, that people may see this 20 years from now, the way I watched Rocky, and say, “Oh my God I can get up and do it.” The way I watched Midnight Cowboy and said, “Somebody that means nothing can become something.” MTW

Last Thursday I had a rude awakening. A friend invited my friends and I out for pupus and drinks, only later informing us that we were headed to Vino. Thoughts of stuffy servers and suffocating surroundings floated through my head, followed by the serious anxiety that comes with my actually having to shower before leaving the house. But I relented, put on something other than a bikini and headed to Kapalua. My worst fears were confirmed when we entered. was not all that crowded, and we were ushered in and seated immediately. The smiling waitress came over with an extensive wine list. They have a selection of over 150 bottles, some of those are even pressurized so when people like me purchase by the glass, each one tastes like it has just been uncorked. I was skeptical at first about this seemingly brilliant system, but she challenged me to a taste. How could I say no? Feeling a little indecisive with so many wines to choose from, she recommended the Chardonnay sampler: a selection of three two-ounce glasses of wine. Considering the wines were superb, this turned out to be a great deal.

As I settled into my seat, and wine, it became clear that Vino is not nearly as stodgy as I had imagined. Yes, there were a number of tourists there, but not everybody just arrived from a cruise ship. The menu at Vino is large, primarily consisting of tapas, so it took a while for us to decide. Should we get the Crispy Sushi or the Rock Shrimp Fritto? The Oven Roasted Beet Salad, or the Heirloom Tomatoes and Crisp Fried Mozzarella? Fortunately there were a lot of us, so between six people we sampled nearly everything on the menu. The Crispy Sushi was amazing, but the Silk Handkerchiefs (homemade pasta with basil pesto and oven roasted tomatoes) took my breath away. I was not too enthusiastic about ordering the Pork Tenderloin Roulade, but others were intrigued so it was added to our list. It turned out to be one of my favorite dishes. The Pork was tender, stuffed with mushrooms. It was, quite literally, super tasty. While each dish looked like an individual work of art, I thought the Jumbo Lump Crab and Ahi Dynamite were a little bland. Then again, not everything is going to be a hit. All and all, the evening turned out to be a lot of fun, filled with amazing food. Given the superior caliber of the food, the prices are reasonable. Most of the dishes range from $8-15 and are generally small, but going with friends and ordering a selection is an economical and exciting way to experience this Maui treasure. Just don’t forget the wine—the restaurant is called Vino, after all. MTW

Happy Holidays to You: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Boxing Day! [GENERAL] It’s hard to believe another year’s gone by but before you know it, it’s the day after Halloween and you’re hearing the first notes of “Jingle Bells” while you’re waiting in line for your double decaf venti Gingerbread Latte at Starbucks. Thus begins the flurry of anxious travel planning, family visits, holiday card lists, Christmas caroling, tree decorating, pie eating, cranberry sauce recipe getting, gift buying and not nearly enough rounds of eggnog. By Thanksgiving, you’re ready to toss in your towel if you hear another rendition of “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.” Anyway, here’s hoping you survive it all with grace, aloha and lots of mistletoe. ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

Fa La La La La! Thursday, 6 p.m. at the Kalama Park Bandstand in Kihei

‘Tis Always the Season for Spinning!

[HOLIDAY MUSIC] For reasons that I’ve never really understood, people love to listen to bright, cheery tunes when the holidays roll around. Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day and even Christmas all seem to elicit non-stop requests from people for all sorts of singing and carols. Why people would want to subject themselves to hours and hours of happy music during the holiday season mystifies and, frankly, troubles me. Anyway, the county Department of Parks and Recreation, of all people, are even getting into the act by sponsoring a free Maui Community Band concert. Made up of 40 adults and students, the Maui Community Band will be playing all your favorite holiday tunes. For more information, call the parks and rec department at 270-8070. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Thursday, Dec. 22, 10 p.m. at Casanova, Makawao [DANCE MUSIC] The Sunn Lounge is in effect, with DJ’s Sal (Maui), Max (Wisconsin, SF and Maui), Lucky Brown (Seattle, Maui) and VJ’s Haidai and Trevor. Time to shake off all those hours you’ve spent in traffic and waiting in long lines shopping, all that turkey and stuffing eatin’, with some good ole yuletide booty shakin’. You know, in some countries, dancing is considered good exercise. That is, of course, if you stop staring at that chick with the holly in her cleavage, get off your barstool and move your limbs around like a claymation reindeer. Just put one… foot in front… of the other! Yeah!

EAR SHOT Musical Comfort Food A bowl of Cheerios at midnight… A bologna sandwich on Wonder Bread with a slice of lettuce and a little mayo after school—These are comfort foods. Everyone has a favorite simple little snack that fills that hole in your stomach like a final puzzle piece. Satisfaction guaranteed. I think the same applies to music. Whoever loves music, has to have a cherished stash of songs, albums or artists that will scratch that itch, put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Musical Prozac, if you will. These choices sometime stem from childhood and can often be embarrassing (e.g. Rush—Moving Pictures. Yeah, guilty). Their mood-enhancing power, though, cannot be denied. Once in awhile a newly discovered artist can be added to the list. Here’s a couple for your consideration:

SEU JORGE “LIFE AQUATIC STUDIO SESSIONS”

(Portuguese covers of David Bowie tunes)

I found the Wes Anderson movie Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) to be a bit of a disappointment. Fortunately, like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Seu Jorges’ Portuguese covers of David Bowie tunes stole the show. Now they’re all finally on CD. Jorge has a couple of older albums and his sound is reminiscent of Caetano Velaso and Milton Nascimento. On this latest album, Jorge heats up the icy emotion of Bowie’s original songs with a little fiery island flavor. The music is simultaneously exotic and familiar. Jorge’s renditions of Bowie’s recognizable melodies are transformed. The listener knows the tunes but sung in Portuguese, they take on a different, alien quality, providing a mysterious and enjoyable juxtaposition. With just one man and a guitar, the sparse, bare-boned production exposes the seductively pretty chords that Bowie created. Bowie liked it so much, he wrote the liner notes for the album. —Hollywood Records 2005

BETA BAND “BEST OF THE BETA BAND”

(Complex, psychedelic whimsy, mixed with folk, funk and ambient sounds)

From the chilly streets of Edinburgh, Scotland comes The Beta Band. In 1997, three friends came together to form the band—vocalist Stephen Mason, drummer Robin Jones and DJ/sampler John Maclean. Their songs usually start with simple, catchy campfire song arrangements and Mason’s earnest Scottishaccented vocals. Soon layers of textures and electronic beats build and overlap with one another. The lyrics float in, out and around the songs, sounding like the mantras of a dyslexic Zen poet. England’s (their “spiritual second home”) rain-soaked, charcoal gray atmosphere also filters through their music. If you enjoy the psychedelic and whimsical songs of the Beatles and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, mixed with folk, funk and ambient sounds, pick this one up. — Astralwerks Records 2005

It’s your money, defend it

wisely.

Bruce Guerin, the MACC’s house pianist

We may have a reputation for humor in our ads, but there’s nothing funny about our skills. You might be surprised to learn our staff includes past tax managers of Quaker Oats and a Fortune 50 oil company, and our named partner is a veteran of Deloitte & Touche with a USC Masters in Business Taxation. Frankly, there isn’t a business on this island too big for us, but we’re happy to serve everyone (even if you’re just We’re weird, we starting in your garage)! actually enjoy doing taxes! 244.7770 One Main Plaza, Wailuku Call before Dec. 20th for a FREE year end tax planning consultation

Guerin, at work They say he never plays the same song twice. And yet, every Wednesday night at the Castle Theater, and every year for the FirstLight Film Festival, pianist Bruce Guerin warms up the theater audience with selections thematically befitting the upcoming movie. “If it’s a French film,” he says, “I play French music. If it’s a film from Berlin… well, I play French music—I don’t know any German songs. No, I didn’t mean to say that!” Born in 1919 in Hollywood, California, Guerin grew up in show business. His mom was a vaudeville dancer, his father a technical director for Republic Studios— then, a home-base movie studio for big names like John Wayne, Buster Keaton and W.C. Fields. “I grew up seeing five movies a week,” Guerin says. “Every week!” He still loves watching movies. Some of his favorites include Birdcage, most all of the classics (“Gone With the Wind wasn’t too bad”), In Harm’s Way (“a good war movie”)— but really, there are too many to mention. When he was five, Guerin began taking piano lessons and continued on through high school. He attended music school at UCLA, and began getting gigs. But the jobs weren’t always piano related. “Being in Hollywood,” says Guerin, “whether you like it or not, you find yourself in show business.” Guerin’s made 13 movies—most from the early to mid 1920’s—including Parasite, The Salvation Hunters, Lover’s Lane, The Country Kid, Drifting, The

Bachelor Daddy and Kindred of the Dust. During World War II, Guerin played all the big USO shows with Bob Hope, Betty Hutton and others. After the war, he went back to Hollywood, then took to the road with a “funny hat band”—a trio combining comedic shtick and serious musicianship. He’s worked with string ensembles, quartets and accomplished singers. He even worked in Las Vegas for a couple of years, and became close friends with Liberace, a man Guerin says was “a good piano player and a great guy.” By 1969, Guerin was in the best piano trio of Hollywood. But he decided to let it go and move to Honolulu. “I had to eat!” he says. He worked for the Sheraton and eventually played the entire hotel circuit. He also worked 12 years at the Hyatt Regency in Ka’anapali. “The other piano guy at the Hyatt, when guests used to ask him a song he didn’t recognize,” says Guerin, “he would tell them, ‘Come back tomorrow—Bruce will know.” Years later, Guerin’s wife Lucille was volunteering at the MACC when she heard that Maui Film Festival co-director Barry Rivers was looking for a piano player. She immediately told her husband and he’s been the Cultural Center’s pianist now for four years. “Besides that, he’s a real good dancer,” says Lucille, smiling. When asked how many songs he thinks are in his repertoire, Guerin is unapologetically dismissive. “I wouldn’t have a clue,” he says. “I have the capacity to remember a song I haven’t played in 30 years. Of course, I also open the icebox and can’t remember why all the time!” MTW

New This Week CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN II - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Sometimes I think Hollywood just wants me to feel like a bitch for ripping on every movie released, because they totally set me up to do so! Many people enjoyed the first time around with Steve Martin playing the hapless father of 12—I wasn’t one of them. Now, we all know that sequels usually aren’t as good as the originals so I’m going to just keep my comments to myself. 94 min. (Heidi King) FUN WITH DICK AND JANE - (PG13) Comedy, Adventure - One day after being promoted, Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) realizes he’s in the heart of an Enron-like scandal. With no stable source of income, Dick and his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) are forced to sell off their beloved plasma TV. After a series of crappy jobs and no hope of a new flat screen, the couple embark on a fullblown crime spree. There’s a moral lesson in all this but watching the couple make asses out of themselves is much more entertaining. 90 min. (Ashley Fitch) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - (PG13) - Drama Based on the bestselling book by Arthur Golden about the journey of a peasant girl into one of Japan’s most notorious geishas. As long as you don’t think too much about the implications of the actresses not being Japanese, the movie is entertaining in that Hollywood-epic kind of way. The cinematography and costumes are predictably gorgeous, and the villainess is deliciously wicked. 145 min. (Samantha Campos) THE PRODUCERS - (PG13) - Comedy - The huge stars (Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane) who brought this classic back on Broadway are now gettin’ it to the silver screen. Basically, two dudes try to make money off the inverstors of their play by creating a flop. I was sold as soon as I found out Will Ferrell has a part. I love that man.

Memoirs of a Geisha? No, silly—it’s Hilary Duff in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 Also stars Uma Thurman. 134 min. (HK) THE RINGER - (PG-13) - Comedy - This has all the makings of the greatest film of the year—maybe even the decade. Johnny Knoxville plays some guy who decides to enter the Special Olympics by pretending to be stupider than he actually is. Gold! 100 min. (Anthony Pignataro) RUMOR HAS IT - (PG13) - Comedy - Kevin Costner plays a guy suave enough to seduce a beautiful woman (Jennifer Aniston) as well as her Mother...and Grandma?!? Ew. Emotional distress ensues. 97 min. (HK) WOLF CREEK - (R) - Horror - Based on factual events, which are at the same time vague and intriguing. Three road trippers are having a blast in Australia...until something happens with their car and they decide to accept the help of a seemingly good citizen and perhaps seal their doom. Mwah hah hah ha! 99 min. (HK)

Now Showing AEON FLUX - (PG-13) - Action - In the future the seemingly perfect world is anything but and there is no freedom, only government control. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is the head agent of a rebel force and on the front line of a secret fight. 125 min. (Gabrielle Poccia)

ASTROMANA

MASON MCGRAW

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) This week, your focus could change to a more relaxed energy and laziness, like the many tropical plants gently moving in the breeze… How nice for you! Making new friends is a good thing. Find out what you have in common and with their companionship, your life will be much more fun in the long run. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) Anger really sucks, doesn’t it? It’s a major issue with Aquarius, being a fixed sign, and an issue that will surface quite quickly this week. Forgiveness is divine. Even if you don’t want to forgive, your mind will let go of these troubling thoughts much easier. Let it go like sand through your fingers at the beach. Besides, what can you do about it anyway? Two wrongs don’t make a right so it’s time to walk away. PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) Have you ever been scuba diving, swimming deep down into the blue of the Pacific, breathing underwater? You can’t beat the location plus it’d be truly second nature to you. But something is missing—or is it? You will be easily distracted from focusing on your goals this week by visiting friends or pals who would rather take you out drinking. Even though it would be best to stay on course and do the right thing, moderation is better than excess, eh? ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You tend to be a bit on the sensitive side this week but maybe you aren’t coming to terms honestly with the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Can you handle it? It’s time to step up to the plate and make a decision you’ve been wanting to make for quite some time but just never did. Listen to your inner voice and meditate on the good things in life. Relax. Self-control is a completely necessary and valuable Jedi skill. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!” Oh, my. Wouldn’t it be easier to just sort of, like, read a book? Anger management is a class that should be taught in every school. (Interesting note: “should” isn’t even a word in the African language.) Like Yoda says, “Do or do not, there is not try.” If there’s something that’s bothering you this week, bring it up. It doesn’t hurt to discuss important issues in your life with the ones you truly love. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) The cheer of the holidays is all around us now—so much going on and so much to do. And it’s over before you know it. There’s something to be learned about the way time ticks and how you can ready your emotions for the inevitable ends. Yeah, we all die but until then, shouldn’t we enjoy the ride and spread as much happiness and goodness as we can? Even if it’s just a little something-something, gifts are totally in! CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21) So you think you can, but can you? There are some things in life you have control over, and then there are things you can’t do anything about. Living through example is one of the best ways to help the ones you love make better decisions. If something is bothering you and nothing changes, then discussion is key. But if you’re hitting the same problem over and over, maybe it’s best (respectively) to let it go. LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) Entrancing mystical magic flows from your drum and song. Your fiery grace of dance and meditation brings wonder to all who see your brilliance and power. The Leo is known as the most powerful sign of all because of the “lion” in your heart and the sun as your planet. When the waves crash on the shore and skin peels from a burn, a new beginning occurs from an even stronger transformation. If you’re happy with what you’re doing now, you’re ready for the next level. VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) Have you noticed all the fowl language lately? I’m not impressed. Isn’t that a sign of ignorance? Like small flowers resting in the moonlight, the cool breeze of the trades off the ocean calms even the most dangerous spirit. There are all kinds of walks of life on this lovely planet and for some reason, it seems that Virgo finds them all. Going on a family trip to the bamboo forest or Iao Valley is reliable refreshment. LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) The fine balance of life can be easily illustrated with the concept of Yin and Yang—Yang, the action, and Yin, the reaction. You have a bit of both. Going from one spectrum to the next can be confusing for you. Really focus on who you are and what you want to do. No two people are the same and the more you understand yourself, the better. If you have time, try taking some salsa classes. SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) Sunlight beams down through the trees, heating up the air, until a breeze brings respite. Thankfulness is key during the holidays, and sharing is important, too. It’s time to settle for little or none. Simplify your lifestyle and get back to your roots. Starting over again isn’t as scary as you think. A Taurus brings an interesting twist to your living situation. SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) Kicking back and enjoying the holidays this year is your main focus. Don’t let your wandering mind bring you down about the past or why this year is different than the last. No time to compare and contrast! Over-analyzing is only going to bring you down. Your dreams are very powerful right now and you would be wise to listen to them for insight. Especially when it comes to important decision making. MASON123LOVE@YAHOO.COM

The Gift

A real friend is someone who you can sit in complete silence with and still walk away feeling like you just had the best conversation of your life. - Unknown It was Sunday, late afternoon. We were sitting at Colleen’s in Haiku—actually, we were sitting in the third booth I made us move to because it happened to be close to an electrical outlet that allowed me to use my laptop. Sasha wanted to read the paper—New York Times, Sunday edition—and I had a lot of work to do. We sat in silence for a while, sometimes wordlessly passing random objects: a napkin when I noticed her iced double mocha forming a precarious puddle next to Section B; a sugar packet when the server dropped off my double latte. Neither of us looked up from what we were doing. “Geez, how long we been married?” Sasha suddenly asked. “Hunh?” I said, not really listening. “Oh. Could you pass me another sugar? Thanks, dear.” I was busy thinking about the night before. You see, I know this amazing artist who, periodically, has fabulous parties out in Kaupo involving the latest works of his artist friends, music, wine, tantalizing food prepared in his outdoor kitchen and wood-fired stove and an international lounge-y ambience in his open-air, raised platform living room, a.k.a. Mediterranean stage of the gods. Anytime I’ve attended one of these soirees, I’m always shy at first. I walk around the outskirts of the group, stopping to contemplate a painted goddess or the bowls of chopped herbs in the cucina. But inevitably, I dip a toe in socially and get involved in long artistic conversations with fascinating people I’ve never met, I eat too much pasta, somebody’s smile makes me blush and I develop yet another crush on some exotic stranger whose name I can never remember but usually ends in “o.” Most importantly, I get high with inspiration, then wonder why I don’t come to these parties more often. Maybe it’s the two-hour drive it takes to get out there. Of course, I could have carpooled with friends but on this particular night I was looking forward to a little quality alone time with Rocky, my Jeep. My need to fly solo came because lately, I’ve been a little frustrated with my friends. Some never call, others call at the wrong times, still others only call when they’re drunk and trying to divert attention from the cops standing outside Honolulu strip clubs—and they all just weren’t recognizing my crabby, overstressed holiday mood as a pathetic plea for attention. Silly, silly friends. I guess what I needed was a little time spent with strangers out in the middle of nowhere— in a way, to be truly quiet and liberated. Sometimes the comfort of close friendship can be stifling, especially when you know that true friends will accept you even when you’re shy, crabby or distracted temporarily and completely ignoring them. It’s that pressure—like not enjoying the sunshine when you live on Maui—that sometimes keeps you from appreciating a gift like real, lasting, longterm, almost connubial friendship. This I thought about as I sat in the booth at Colleen’s, in between the Christmas tree and Sasha, who stopped to peer out at me over her newspaper. “You know, I never realized how many ‘things’—issues—I have,” she said, looking all cute and ponderous. “They seem to multiply as I get older, too.” “Really?” I said. “I have no idea what you mean.”
