Power Without Knowledge

2006 in letters to the editor Although I’m pretty sure you won’t have the nerve to print the following letter, I would appreciate some sort of explanation as to what your motivations are in trying to pass off unresearched inferences as news. This is completely unprofessional and I would like some sort of response from you, even if you won’t print my letter. After reading the garbage you guys tried to pass off as a front page story I realized that you guys are nothing more than a print version of Fox News… You guys should stick to covering “Arts and Entertainment,” you do a fairly good job at that, but leave the fear mongering and misinformation to the pros at Fox News… Four words for editor Anthony Pignataro: “Give me a break.” His comments about Governor Lingle’s energy proposals in Volume 9, Issue 35 were either naively or intentionally incorrect… This week my mother and I were reading the Movie Capsules in your newspaper and realized that your writers, Heidi King and Anthony Pignataro, don’t know how to summarize the movies… I just wanted to commend you on your hugely enlightening article on Maui’s Top 10 Hot Dogs. I learned so much! With high-quality news coverage like that, I need look no further for my news. Perhaps next week you could do a piece on Maui’s top 10 places to eat a steaming pile of shit!…

Reading the Maui Time Weekly makes me wonder how the heck a bunch of haole transplants became responsible for churning out the paper… In general, the articles are a waste of ink and paper.

With so much happening in these times I feel it is an outrage that you believe Holoholo Girl and stories about bacon are appropriate for any reader to digest.

I also could care less that you think the theme to Ghostbusters is an anti-lynching song… Who hired you? Who gave you the authority to cast your weak spells on paper? What is alternative about it? The world has enough alcoholsucking minions. Take it to another level already. Ponder this life of illusions.

Have you even driven the road to Hana?… While I found the article on the effects of hikers in Kahakaloa fascinating I was slightly irked by the quotation that opened the story… Can you please give Mr. Cole [Smithey] some toilet paper so he doesn’t keep using the pages of the Maui Time to wipe his ass? Now while I have no personal investment in whether Mr. Cole likes a movie or not, it is personally assaulting to have to wade through paragraph after paragraph of what can only be described as verbal

diarrhea… Hi my name is Samantha West Gruys and this man Trevor Jones is my grandpa. I really appreciate you putting him on the newspaper or whatever you want to call it… If you continue to publish crappy “interviews” like that, publicists will stop returning your phone calls. I usually love your paper, and I am underwhelmed by the standards you are setting these days. Ask some interesting questions, get some interesting answers, remember what they were, and then PUBLISH it—I’m begging you!… If one is only looking for trouble, one can paint a picture of a beautiful sunrise as a cloudy day. There’s a lot more sunshine in this story than the cloudy article chose to show… In response to the recent article regarding Pacific Biodiesel, it is too bad the author did such a poor job of researching the facts… I would like to say that after reading Miss Carrie Courtney’s article I think she just may have single-handedly sabotaged what little hope the homeless people had for understanding and support… I used to think Maui Time was about “being fair,” open, honest... showing ALL sides of a story, even when it was naked and covered with slime... I thought one of your main goals was to be unbiased and not just “reporting as you like” as the other major papers, TV stations and news media do, all to gain points for their side of an issue... Yet I am seeing more and more of your papers becoming one-sided, almost vindictive... To list Nikhilananda as “Activist of the Year” is one of the more absurd things I have seen in this newspaper.

You have a great newspaper, but this is ridiculous… I hope you know what an idiot you have working for you in Editor Anthony Pignataro. How the Pig can back The ATeam rather than Charmaine Tavares shows either: (1) He’s an idiot; (2) He’s friends with [Mayoral Executive Assistant David] DeLeon; (3) What all us women say: “He’s got the small man syndrome (very small I might say)”… Shame on you Maui Time…

Once again you have fallen to the ways of the average press, using the paper to promote your own selfish biased ways, being childish, poking immature jabs at only those you have personal vendettas against... Grow up Maui Time. Sure it’s YOUR paper, and you have the permanent pen, but isn’t your paper supposedly the impartial one on the island? Leaving personal agendas at home?

You obviously aren’t the press you claim to be. If I had a subscription I would cancel it...

I usually like the diatribes of Mr. Pignataro but his pathetic reflections on the East Maui Council race in “Case Closed,” Sept. 28 issue, were extremely disappointing. It appears that Pignataro has a serious problem with democracy… I am writing this letter to explain my utter disgust in your lack of judg-

ment in regards to the Eh Brah! I submitted.

Editing without permission is not something a person in your position should condone.

Let alone editing a piece so poorly that it elicits a reply suggesting violence against the writer. I, of course, am talking about the soda incident as I would hope you are well aware of… Please learn from [your] mistakes and apologize to your readers for making a mockery of something so threatening and significant. Remember, throw shakas, not soda…

This goes out to the morons who wrote the “Play in one act” on Chris Isaak. First of all who authorized five people who only know Isaak from a video on MTV to write an article on him? Not only is it a huge disrespect to people who love his music, it clearly showed your ages and maturity level. Reading that article reminded me of being in high school listening to gossiping girls give reviews on other students… My guess is that you are very tired, sister. Take some time off. Start taking better care of yourself. Travel. Read.

Visit the elderly, the homeless, the terminally ill. Serve. Then tell us all about it… If you’re going to rip off someone else’s concept, at least make it entertaining… And why doesn’t Maui Time have a letters to the editor section so that people can voice their feedback about the paper anyway? If you still wish to complain about something, please have the decency to use plenty of bad punctuation and grammar—that makes it easier for us to make fun of you when we respond. Most people would agree that it’s reasonable to expect from the citizens who make up the county’s myriad boards and commissions some kind of specialized knowledge about the board or commission they end up serving. For planning commissioners, we want to see a familiarity with the arcane and technical language of environmental impact statements. In a cultural resources commissioner, we hope to find a love and appreciation for Hawaiian antiquities.

Likewise, we want our Liquor Commissioners and Adjudication Board members to, even if they don’t imbibe intoxicants, to have some familiarity with the business of buying and selling alcohol. Otherwise, how could the various individuals tasked with granting liquor licenses and sanctioning violations carry out their responsibilities fairly?

It’s an understandable, though completely naïve view. I’ve sat through dozens of Liquor Commission and Adjudication Board hearings, and have rarely seen panelists offer unique, studied knowledge of the industry they regulate.

Exchanges like the following, which took place Dec. 7 between Adjudication Board member Joe Tanaka and Henry’s Bar & Grill owner Sean McDaniel, are not as rare as you might think: TANAKA: What’s a shot of Jager?

MCDANIEL: It tastes like cough syrup to me. It’s an herbal liqueur.

TANAKA: Is there alcohol in it?

Tanaka, it has to be said, isn’t exactly a rookie around the LC offices. Though his appointment to the Adjudication Board came just a few months ago—he replaced Lance Collins after the whole County Council candidate controversy blew over—Tanaka previously spent five years on the Liquor Commission.

SAY IT AIN’T SO, DUDE! Very bad news for our state’s biggest agricultural firms this week, and you can sum it all up with this Honolulu Advertiser headline, which ran Dec. 20: “Forget sugar—in Hawai`i, pot’s king.” That’s right, man: marijuana is now the crop of choice in our state’s fields. According to figures calculated by marijuana public policy analyst (no, I had no idea such jobs existed either) Jon Gettman, in 2006 farmer or farmers unknown cultivated 2.38 million pounds of grass to the tune of $3.82 billion. Now that’s what economists call a high value crop—stats from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show that last year Hawai`i’s farms produced 2.02 million tons (not pounds) of sugarcane, which was valued at about $63 million. Pineapple production saw just 212,000 tons produced, but brought in $79 million. Of course, Gettman may just be blowing smoke—“We have no way to verify his conclusions because we don’t collect the data,” state agriculture statistician (unfortunately, such jobs do exist) Mark Hudson told the Advertiser.

JUST NOT A&B’S WEEK According to the Dec. 22 online version of Pacific Business News, Charlotte, North Carolina-based Horizon Lines, Inc. just elected Norman Mineta to its board of directors. Mineta, for those of you who don’t watch the news with a ferocity bordering on fanaticism, was both President George W. Bush’s Secretary of Transportation and President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Commerce. He’s also vice chairman of Hill & Knowlton as a former vice chairman of he defense giant Lockheed Martin. Horizon Lines is, of course, the second biggest shipping firm that sends freighters to and from Hawai`i, A&B’s Matson being the biggest. Given Mineta’s impressive Washington credentials and obvious lobbying power, we’ll just have to see how long Matson stays on top. MTW

It’s a rare day when I’m driving to work and don’t see a Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship floating at Pier 1 in Kahului Harbor. It’s not hard to spot the ships’ passengers, either, milling about in front of Maui Mall as they do, their brows furrowed in that “Is this really that tropical paradise they call Maui?” look. Apparently they’re just having a blast, because NCL wants its fleet to spend even more time in lovely Kahului. “We are now receiving very good feedback from our guests on the seven-day interisland cruise, and we are increasingly hearing requests for a longer version of this destination-rich interisland cruise including one or two days at sea,” NCL Chairman Colin Veitch said in the Dec. 21, 2006 Maui News. Of course, it’s up to the state’s Harbors Division to approve NCL’s plan, and on paper, it’s not necessarily a done deal. We’ve got cruise ships already spending lots of time in the harbor, to say nothing of interisland barges, freighters and, starting this summer, the Superferry will be docking there every day. But given the company’s relatively recent generosity to our governor (NCL owns Polynesian Adventure Tours), it’s just possible the state will find a way to squeeze NCL in.

Thanks a lot for stiffing my mom on the last month of rent. She so kindly took you and your two young children in and let them stay in her home for two weeks rent-free, while you did a half-ass job cementing her driveway. You said you would do it as a favor. On top of that, you never paid the “family discount” rent on time, and in the end, refused to pay the last month. And your mother has the balls to tell my mom that you’ve done “enough favors” for us? I can see where you got your crappy attitude. On top of all this, I loaned you the money for the down payment on your new home and now you refuse to pay me that back. Topping it all off, you claim you’re making our lives a living hell simply because I dumped you. You think I’ve forgotten how, when I left you, you snuck into my house and stole my lingerie, jewelry and God knows what else? I’m just glad that you’re out of my life. Great news for all you KiheiUpcountry road fans! According to today’s Maui News, the state Highways Division will—in the next few weeks— decide who gets the contract to design the actual road. Can’t you just smell the asphalt? Now they’re thinking the road, which has been kicked around since 1970, which was so long ago that people were still watching new episodes of Green Acres, will cost something like $86.3 million. Oh, and the story says it’ll take five years to build the road. Five years! At first I thought this was an insanely long time, but then I realized that it’s actually very realistic. That’s because the road is from Kihei to Upcountry, which is uphill at a considerable slope. Now if engineers were to build a road from Upcountry to Kihei, which is all downhill, then they’d have a far easier time and would probably get done a lot faster. But no one ever listens to me about these things.

That’s right: it’s time to watch our beloved Maui County Council members jockey for power and influence in their upcoming term. And they’re so elegant about it, too, they way they all line up in today’s Maui News—Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson excepted—behind current Chairman G. Riki Hokama (who very humbly refuses to comment for the article). The reason Johnson isn’t backing Hokama? Why, she wants the job herself. Now it would be nice if Johnson did take charge of the council, but there’s no way that’s going to happen.

It’s not really clear from the article who’s got the edge, though my money’s on an entirely different candidate: Joseph Pontanilla. He’s pro-development and quiet—so quiet his name doesn’t even appear in the story!—he’s the perfect dark horse candidate to ride in and take over after Mateo and Molina split the vote.

MONDAY, Dec. 25 For some reason Governor Linda Lingle—who said during her recent reelection campaign that her administration has “taken unprecedented action to preserve the environment”—suddenly wants to spend far more money on environmental protection than ever before, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser.

She wants the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to start getting slightly more than $100 million

What’s more, she wants to increase the DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) from the current miniscule 40 officers to 150 over the next two years. If this sudden recognition that DLNR is severely underfunded and understaffed, it’s because you read about it right here in these pages more than a year ago. “For the past few years, DOCARE has run on a skeleton crew of just six enforcement officers and two supervisors on Maui, one officer and supervisor on Lanai and one officer on Molokai to patrol or cover all this,” Cheryl Ambrozic reported in our Dec. 8, 2005 story “Those who DOCARE.” Ambrozic then quoted DOCARE Branch Chief Randy Awo: “Ideally, what I need to accomplish our goals in Maui County is to employ 50 enforcement officers plus five more supervisors and five more clerical support staff,” Awo said. “My men are working under dire circumstances. We have a good staff here, but we are small and our challenges continue to increase.

We need more officers. I don’t think this will happen in my lifetime but it would be nice if it could happen in the lifetime of our children.”

TUESDAY, Dec. 26 Could it be that Awo was unduly pessimistic about the state finally giving him the people he needs to enforce our state’s environmental laws? Is this spending increase a tacit admission by Lingle that her first term of office didn’t really do squat for the environment? I don’t know—you tell me.

SHOCKING VERDICT

The North Carolina Court of Appeals overturned the cocaine-possession conviction of Timothy Stone in September, ruling that a search of his person was unconstitutional even though he had given police permission. The judges agreed with Stone that when he consented, he never expected that the search would include the officers holding out the waistband of his sweatpants and shining a flashlight on his genitals, which is where he happened to be hiding a small container of cocaine.

In 2002, Jeffrey Klein and Brett Birdwell, both 17 at the time, trespassed onto a railroad yard in Lancaster, Pa., and climbed atop a boxcar to see what the view was like, but were severely burned by a 12,500-volt line on the roof and thus sued Amtrak and Norfolk Southern railroads for not having done enough to prevent them from trespassing. In October, a federal jury awarded the two men a total of about $12 million in compensatory damages plus $12 million in punitive damages.

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES The “Berkeley Pit” in Butte, Mont. is the nation’s largest environmental-disaster site, with 40 billion gallons of highly toxic copper-mine waste that the federal government has long feared too expensive to clean up. But Montana Tech researchers, writing in the Journal of Organic Chemistry in July, have found more than 160 types of “extremophiles” (organisms that thrive in toxicity) in the pit and have demonstrated that some are effective against lung and ovarian cancers.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Ricardo Meana, 81, was charged with attempted murder in November in Sun City, Fla., when his 82-yearold wife, who has Alzheimer’s, was found inside a van in a store’s parking lot struggling with the plastic bag over her head. Police were called, but Meana seemed unconcerned and even nonchalantly resumed shopping, saying that he often put the bags on when his wife felt sick, so that she would not vomit on herself.

THE LAWS OF IRONY Federal prosecutors have insisted so far that any ill-gotten money that former Enron executives had squirreled away in their spouses’ names still can be fully recovered by the government, except for one executive. Michael Kopper, once a director of Enron’s global finance unit, pleaded guilty in 2002 to illegally obtaining $16.5 million, but he is openly gay.

And since his home state of Texas does not recognize his union with his longtime partner, prosecutors cannot treat the partner as a “spouse” and have lumped him with “third party” transferees, whose assets are much more difficult to obtain (according to a November report in the Washington Blade).

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US A 41-year-old engineer in suburban Toronto has accumulated, and worn, about 800 pairs of sports socks over 15 years (half of them off the feet of professional athletes), according to a lengthy November profile in Canada’s National Post, which did not reveal his name. The worst part of his hobby, he said (besides having to keep it secret from his wife), is that he is often contacted by foot and sock fetishists, which he denies that he is, preferring to think of himself as sort of a “custodian of history,” wrote the Post. t’s 11 p.m. on a Friday night and the place is packed. I’m at the Sansei in Kihei, which has a line outside of people waiting to get a seat at a table.

I walk past them and head straight to the bar, which is by the stage, just in time to see Elvis. Or, at least, hear somebody just like him.

Michael is wearing an orange aloha shirt and is gripping the microphone as he looks at the monitor, reading the words to “Teddy Bear” as they’re lit up. In the large, dimly lit room, a disco ball casts lights along the floor and tables in front of the elevated stage.

On occasion the host, Tyrone, who is also on stage, holds up a large sign that says, “SCREAM,” at which point the mostly drinking audience complies.

“Okay, everybody give it up for Michael!” Tyrone says when the song is over. He cues the next song, which happens to be another Elvis tune, “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” that he will sing himself and encourage everyone to sing along.

Karaoke (pronounced kah-rah-OH-kay) has been a popular form of entertainment in Japan since the early 1970’s. Translated, it means “empty orchestra,” representing the recorded music that backs live singers. Lyrics are generally provided by way of a nearby video monitor, which also sometimes features an accompanying B-grade music video.

The phenomenon has since spread to other parts of the world. But perhaps because of our proximity to Japan and the importance in which

Hawai`i has historically placed on music, karaoke is extremely popular—and often taken quite seriously—here on Maui.

Though easily one of the youngest performers on Sansei’s Kihei stage, 21-year-old Brittany is an obvious karaoke pro. Her near pitch-perfect rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance” is American Idol-worthy; her ability to maintain eye contact, dance, and smile confidently through the song’s challenging chorus does not go unnoticed by the crowd, as they cheer her loudly at song’s end.

Brittany says she’s been singing karaoke since she was five, and that her faves are songs from the 1950’s. But she tries not to sing any song more than once.

“I just do it for fun,” she says later. “And well, my dad is the host.”

Another song is cued—Luther Vandross’ “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”—as local entertainer and recording artist Merv Oana casually gets up from his seat at the bar, amiably stopping to say “happy holidays” to friends along the way before he steps onto the stage and takes the mic. His skilled delivery of the R&B tune is as cool and smooth as his walk up.

When Oana’s song ends, a grinning, curly-haired dude takes the stage and introduces himself to the crowd.

“I’m Rick James, bitch!”

He proceeds to dazzle the crowd with his stylistically perfect and energet-

ames Okumura has been a karaoke host, though not at Sansei Kihei, since 1989. He’d been hosting for a while in Kahului but always wanted to be on Front Street, where he’d heard legends like Elton John and Fleetwood Mac have made impromptu performances.

Though he started his own karaoke company in 1992, Okumura says he’s not in it for the money but for people’s enjoyment.

“It’s a way for people to relieve stress,” he says.

“To handle living on Maui.”

Okumura is now hosting Paradice Bluz’s burgeoning karaoke night on Tuesdays. He says the songs people sing vary from town to town, but the Lahaina crowd tends to like newer stuff.

“Sometimes we can’t please everybody—we can only play so many songs in one night,” he says, as he fiddles with knobs on the soundboard. “But as long as they’re having fun, I’m doing my job. The trick to being a good host is making the person sound good.”

to the beat, everyone goes wild.

Afterwards, as his friend Ozzi sings “My Girl” just as flawlessly, Bruddah D. stands alongside him and sings backup “hey hey hey’s.”

Bruddah D. and Ozzi do perform at various private gigs, mostly around South Maui. They enjoy karaoke not only so they can sing, but also to experience other singers. They tell me a lot of people stick to one style but they try to be versatile.

“Of course we like the oldies, the crooners, Hawaiian songs,” says Ozzi. “Music had soul back then. Not too much hip-hop and rap—it can be monotonous sometimes.”

“There’s a truth to feeling the music and expressing it, no matter what level you’re at,” D. said. “If you sing it with your all, it takes you to a higher place. I like to listen to other people and give them praise, even if they make a fool of themselves—hey, I didn’t see you go up and try it! I like to look for exceptional [singers], just to rub elbows… it raises your game level.”

In a performance that garners one of the biggest reactions of the night, Pono sings R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly” with a natural talent and charisma that perhaps usurps the original artist’s. Almost immediately after Pono’s rich, strong voice belts out through the speakers, whoops erupt from the crowd, who also begin holding up their cell phones and table candles, with restaurant workers reverently flap their arms.

But off to the side of the bar, another man waits, somewhat nervously.

“I’m probably gonna have to follow him,” he says. “Watch.”

As Pono’s song ends, and the beginning notes of Prince’s “Kiss” kick in, the once-nervous man jumps exuberantly onto the stage. Smiling, he grabs the mic and lets loose. He really seems to be enjoying himself. When he’s done, he joins me at the bar.

“I’m a walking jukebox,” says Justin, a 27-yearold server in Kihei. “I can sing almost any song, like, even country songs, and I don’t even listen to coun-

ically infectious “Super Freak.”

I later discover his name is Tyson, and he’s a construction worker and videographer. He sang his first song in Singapore in 1991.

“It’s fun—I’ve never done it seriously,” he says.

“Except for once when my mom was in the audience and I sang, ‘You Are So Beautiful.’”

But when his mom isn’t around, Tyson says his favorite song to sing is “Do Me!” by Bell Biv Devoe (“except nobody has that”) and Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild”—his all-time standard.

“I pick ‘em to amp the crowd and have fun,” he says. “And that’s it.”

try. But as I get older, my memory is fading. It’s all that malted hops and bong resin.”

His favorites to sing are Pearl Jam’s “Black” and “Radiohead’s “Creep,” which Justin said is “super hard to do ‘cause you have to get really high.”

He says he’s been doing karaoke for the past six to seven years, as a way to entertain the audience and get the crowd revved up. But he gets angry when songbooks don’t list songs alphabetically by artist. Most karaoke books just list the songs by title, which doesn’t help when you can’t remember the name of that one Usher hit that you could definitely rock, if you could just find it.

Sal, a 70-ish part-time Maui resident, likes the classics— Bobby Darin, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Engelbert Humperdinck—but, he says, “I do ‘em all my way.” And he’s been doing it regularly in Las Vegas, Massachusetts, Florida, California and Hawai`i for the past three years.

“There are so many really good singers,” Sal says.

“Some are better than the recording artists.”

Sal fondly remembers the first time he went up on stage with a pre-recorded track in front of a group of strangers. He says it was around the time karaoke started (“Was it 15 years ago?”), and he did Tony Bennett’s “The Shadow of Your Smile.”

“I just like to sing, to get the audience reaction,” he says. “But sometimes I for(all after 9:30 p.m.): get the words.”

ONO KINEGRINDS

Market Street Café Wailuku Town’s answer to resort dining I’m staring at the food perched atop the elegant black dish. I want to eat it, but can’t quite bring myself to start chopping into its cascading rainbow beauty with my fork. Then my stomach growls. It wants me to use the fork I’m holding. It wants me to use it right now. I hesitate another moment, then dive in.

The object of my affection is a plate of Cajun seared ahi, draped in avocado slices and a spicy pineapple salsa and served with brown jasmine rice and sautéed vegetables. Everything about the entrée is perfect: the fish is thick and the salsa is spicy and sweet at the same time; the rice is fluffy; even the vegetables, often a disappointment at many fine establishments, are surprisingly tender. It’s a dish fit for any Wailea resort, yet I found it—indeed, devoured it—at little Market Street Café in Wailuku.

Set up in the old Squeaky’s building between Wailuku Town and Happy Valley, Market Street Café is a delightfully eclectic establishment located almost exactly where you’d never expect to find such a place. Aside from the tricky parking lot striped in a way that forces a driver into an awkward reverse no matter how he or she points the car—and menus that resemble photocopied handbills tucked beneath windshield wipers—the café is an outstanding destination for anyone from the hurried worker on lunch break to a couple out for a relaxing dinner.

The menu, which has gone through many changes since it opened a few months ago, offers a surprising array of selections. There are, for the locals raised on plate lunches, entrees like barbe-

cued chicken, chop steak, Mahi tempura and chicken curry, all served with the requisite white rice and mac salad.

But then there are choices like Chop Chop Salad—a heaping plate of lettuce, bleu cheese crumbles, shredded bacon, turkey, salami and cherry tomatoes.

There’s eggplant parmesan, an appetizer dish offering strips of thin Japanese eggplant sliced longer than your hand, then breaded and drenched in cheese and marinara and served with a couple pieces of garlic bread.

There’s a host of tasty flatbread pizzas, topped with barbecued chicken, Thai chicken, and Mediterranean toppings (onions, eggplant, peppers and goat cheese).

And there’s a turkey club sandwich that seems almost overwhelming: a thick helping of smoked turkey, topped with applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and pesto mayo, then stacked on a wheat ciabatta roll.

Even the burger—topped with bacon and cheddar cheese and then slathered in plum barbecue sauce—is something to behold. Getting your mouth around it is one quandary, but eating it before you fill up on the thick, crispy French Fries it comes with is quite another.

And all that’s just the base menu. On any given day the specials board contains items like kalbi short ribs, rib eye steak with sautéed shitake mushrooms, Cajun mahi quesadilla and coconut crusted mahi with the same flavorful salsa as the ahi above.

Those wanting dessert are in for a whole other range of options, including chocolate cake, key lime mousse, banana pudding and a passionfruit mousse drizzled with strawberry sauce that goes down much too quickly, especially after a lunch dominated by a plate of seared ahi. MTW

The PGA will kick off its 2007 season at Kapalua’s Plantation Course on Monday and Tuesday (Jan. 1-2) with professional practice rounds, followed by the event’s annual pro-am tournament on Wednesday (Jan. 3). Keep an ear out for Samuel L.—(WAS THAT A GOOD SHOT? DID YOU LIKE THAT SHOT? ARE YOU TIRED OF THESE M!&!%!!ING SHOTS ON THIS M!&!%!!ING COURSE, M!&!%!!ER?)—Jackson with local celebrity and ESPN personality, Chris (Boomer) Berman. The Championship will commence on Thursday (Jan. 4), and Stuart Appleby should be receiving the trophy, a new $100,000 Mercedes, and the over-$1 million dollar cash prize on Sunday (Jan. 7). Appleby, an unfairly handsome Australian (sorry, ladies, he’s married) has won the last three Mercedes Championships. His main competition is expected to be Tiger Woods, who I’m sure everyone in Maui’s service industry will be excited to see again. Woods made more than $90 million dollars in winnings and endorsements last year, and from what I’ve heard, has allegedly not been committed to share much of it in the form of tips. I’m sure many service providers will be rooting for him anyway, hoping that extra million will stimulate a sense of compassion and generosity. [COMEDY] Wanye Brady has many different styles of humor. The one he is probably best known for is the improvisational, family-friendly variety, such as on Who’s Line Is It Anyway? If you’ve seen the show, you know witty Brady can be on the spot. Even more witty are the impromptu songs he comes up with. I’m surprised he hasn’t released an album, as in he can actually sing. But with that show being so G-rated, it became an easy target from another show—the Dave Chappelle Show. After a slander from a previous episode, Brady clears up any misconceptions by portraying himself as a gun-toting, drug-pushing, cop-killing pimp in a skit on Chappelle’s show. He can play the clean, funny guy and the evil one with the same ease. Castle Theater is at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

[SLAM POETRY] Slam Master D is hosting MauiSlam, Maui’s only spoken word competition. Slam poetry contests are gaining popularity across the nation. In a typical slam, participants are judged by selected audience members, and/or the general audience. Poets are scored on the content of their work and also how well they perform the piece. Needless to say, a contestant will do a lot better if they can work a crowd. What makes this art form competition even more challenging is that the poets can’t use props or instruments. A $100 cash prize will be given to the winner of this MauiSlam. Those under 21 are welcome also, as long as they’re with a parent and ordering food. Maxine Hong Kingston Live!

Friday (Dec. 29), 7 p.m. at The Studio Maui in Haiku [READING] Poet, essayist and anti-war activist Maxine Hong Kingston is a big deal. In 1997 President Bill Clinton gave her the National Humanities Medal, which is actually pretty tough to get.

Anyway, she’s going to be on Maui live and in person to read from her new collection Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace. What, didn’t know she was a big anti-war activist, too? In 2003 as this nation got ready to invade and occupy Iraq she got arrested at the White House with a bunch of other Code Pink agitators. A few local vets, including Bill Stroud of Vietnam Vets of Maui, will be there as well. As will Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin.

Call of Duty Clint Eastwood creates pure cinematic poetry Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima are opposite sides of the same currency that form an inseparable epic narrative correlating to the deeply personal experiences of soldiers on both sides of the Japanese/American fight during World War II. By putting Letters in Japanese with English subtitles, Eastwood contains the reflexive energy and sincerity of second-generation Japanese-American Iris Yamashita’s convincing debut script.

Yamashita uses a literary conceit that the story-within-the-story is informed by the discovery of a bag of letters buried on Iwo Jima by Japanese soldiers. Clint Eastwood’s inspiration for the film came from a book of letters (Picture Letters From Commander In Chief) written by General Tadamichi Kuribayashi to his family during the 1920’s and ‘30s when he lived in the U.S. serving as an envoy.

Jima where the Japanese government sent their forces with the caveat that they would not come back. Eastwood has made the point that “this is not something you could tell an American [soldier] with a straight face.” The director emphasizes the attitudes and fears of the Japanese soldiers fighting against terrible odds for a death that will fulfill their duty.

Ken Watanabe (Memoirs of a Geisha) moors the story as General Tadamichi Kuribayashi whose generous empathy for his men and impromptu defense strategy transforms a predicted five-day battle into a 40-day clash. Watanabe is a master of poignancy, and the aristocratic focus of his gaze supports the loyalty he inspires in his soldiers who dig more than 18 miles of tunnels, 5,000 caves and untold numbers of pillboxes in the island’s black sand.

Visually, the movie seems darker even than the monochromatic blue/gray color design used in Flags of Our Fathers. The limited color palette has a hypnotic effect of drawing the viewer into the gloomy mindset of the same soldiers that we rooted against while watching Flags.

The moodiness of the visuals serves to restrain the potentially numbing effect of the often-traumatic violence onscreen. In one of Eastwood’s most effective use of staging, a battalion of exhausted soldiers hides in a tunnel beneath the defeated ground of Mount Suribachi. Who said he wasn’t going to reenlist? themselves up. It’s a surreal scene, and one that might prove unwatchable were it not for the desaturated color that lends a filter of distance from the sad reality of men joining in shared suicides.

Eastwood performed the year’s most ambitious and original cinematic feat in making a pair of companion films about the significance of the battle at Iwo Jima and the ways in which the Japanese and American governments treated that pivotal engagement. The films are masterpieces of modern cinema, filled with cinematic poetry of bright, medium and dark images, that express Clint Eastwood’s talent as a director to work on a large-scale narrative.

These are not perfect movies by any means. They are films that you are lucky to watch once in your life on big screens, before digesting them as artistic representations of a battle that has often been misrepresented. There is truth in these movies, but Eastwood isn’t interested in sanctifying veracity for its own sake. He wants us to recognize the moral fabric that we all share regardless of our loyalities.

He wants equality.

Woodwork is not just rich people’s furniture anymore It’s judicious positioning to have placed Tom Calhoun’s hall table by the front entrance of “Inspired Hands 2006.” The Hui No`eau’s latest exhibit is a demonstration of the breadth of fine woodwork currently being produced by Maui Woodworker’s Guild.

Calhoun’s “Out of the Box Into the Stream” multi-wood combination of functional and sublime is as much furniture as it is sculpture. The award-winning woodworker has created a unique and modern table of koa, mango, monkeypod, silver oak, holly, avocado burl and milo.

While the table’s legs are all intricate inlay and clean lines, the tabletop juxtaposes their severity with freeform slabs of wood that have been sanded and finished to the effect of polished stone, then fitted together like puzzle pieces.

It took Calhoun three 40-hour weeks to finish. And it comes with a $10,000 price tag.

“If you had to pay the car guy to fix your car and it took him three weeks to do it,” Calhoun told me. “Think about how much it would cost.”

Although the market for woodwork on Maui is small, many woodworkers have created niches for themselves, with half of

any art or handmade furniture pieces ultimately exported to the mainland. Calhoun has had his own shop for 19 years—20, this March—and said the kind of work he does varies from year to year.

“Anywhere from one-third to two-thirds will be art-commissioned pieces,” he said.

“And the rest is custom cabinetry and whatever pays the bills. You have more fun doing things from your imagination but it’s a lot of work. My tendency is to go overboard [for exhibits].”

Calhoun points to a Dennis Holzer sculpture titled “Alive and Well.” Made of koa and milo woods with a granite base, it depicts an ocean-inspired scene with a sea turtle mid-stroke, swimming out of a cluster of coral teeming with life. Priced at $6,500, it sold the first night.

“I’m sick of marine art,” Calhoun said. “I was born and raised here. And if anyone asks me to make a whale’s tale table, I’ll send ‘em somewhere else. But this,” Calhoun said as he walked slowly around the sculpture, nodding approvingly, “looks like a real turtle.”

Another Holzer sculpture, “Warm Breeze,” with a tag for $3,200, is a large piece of curvaceous hau wood with the center portion carved to resemble a woman’s serene face. It sold the second night of the exhibit.

“A lot of this work just goes into people’s homes,” Mats Fogelvik, president and cofounder of Maui’s Woodworkers Guild, said. “But here’s a chance to see it.”

The Guild began six years ago, and now has 40 members—22 of whom are on exhibit. This is their third show.

“Most woodworkers I know are selftaught,” Fogelvik said. “When I came here, I had to learn about Hawaiian woods. Wood moves and has different moisture. You have to know the basic rules of wood and its movements, or it will crack and fade eventually.”

“Half of being a woodworker, besides knowing how to do things,” said woodworker Steve Hynson, “is knowing how to fix things.”

“It’s one part good engineering and one part good design—there has to be a balance,” Fogelvik said. “You have to be precise. Sculpture is more forgiving but joinery is complicated. It takes time.”

Like many of the woodworkers at the exhibit, Fogelvik was commissioned to make a dresser so he already had a jig set up. From it, he made another more elaborate dresser to display, one with koa veneers, ebony and holly inlays, and selfclosing drawers. This is also a way for woodworkers to keep the cost down.

“A lot of people order Shaker-style furniture,” Calhoun said. “For most people they’d be surprised what they’re seeing in a show like this—the high-end. Nice koa like this is $50 to $60 a board foot. We have our ways to keep things affordable. A simple coffee table made out of inexpensive hardwoods could be $2,000. But if you go into a commercial store, you’re paying a thousand anyway.”

Walking through a nearby exhibit room, Fogelvik and I saw Peter Naramore’s large oval dining table. It’s a stunning and massive construct of koa and maple with holly inlay.

The price is stunning, as well: $42,500.

“These are our antiques of the future,” Hynson said, smiling. “Or so we tell ourselves.”

“So we hope,” Fogelvik said.

JANUARY Discovered the joy of Weltschmerz—a kind of sentimental melancholy caused by the feeling of having known perfect joy and then forever longing for it—and reminisced about a relationship in Santa Cruz that had a profound effect on me. Introduced you to Alex, an old high-school friend, and shared some of his e-musings. Told you about my grandmother and her famous Scotch drinking then went back home for a visit.

FEBRUARY Explained how growing up in Palm Springs was decidedly less Rat Pack and more neonthongs-on-crotch-rockets glamour, went to a few gay-fabulous bars on another visit, and said goodbye to Grandma with her friends at a cocktail party in her honor. Found out who you are by making you fill out a survey, discovered we have a lot in common, mainly our “writing music, eating fried chicken, drinking bourbon and masturbating.” Plus, what I’ve learned in love from watching cheesy romantic comedies, and the “thrill of possibilities” with dancer David Ward.

MARCH Got slammed at Maui Booksellers. Read a lot, including one woman’s experience as a naked human sushi table. Went out on a date—with myself—to Ray’s and then Charley’s, where really sweaty men wanted to hug me and make me buy them drinks.

Found out what people were giving up for Lent and made a list of my own that so did not include chocolate. Gave you a Bad Girls of Pulp Fiction rundown of my recent shenanigans, featuring Sasha’s unforgettable topless skateboarding down Main Street.

APRIL Mourned the tragic loss of my best autobuddy, Rocky. Gave you my Top Fives in disturbing turn-ons, unnecessary purchases that made me very happy, and places I wish I was instead of writing the column, like in my bed with Viggo Mortensen, a bottle of Scotch, a book of poetry, dark chocolate, some matches, a Swiss army knife and Josh Hartnett in red lipstick and black eyeliner. Spent a salacious night in a Hana cabin with five girls.

Told you about my daily soundtracks, including what I listen to when I’m dancing around my living room in my underwear.

MAY Had a week not unlike Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, featuring ‘80s prom and cross-dressing parties and more. Made you take a dating quiz where, if you’re prone to nude hunting for wild boar, you win a date w.ith me. Also, gave some sage advice—to myself—about unrequited love, threesomes and accepting a new standard for happiness that doesn’t necessarily involve marriage and kids. Struggled with appropriate subject matter for the column, toyed with the notion of writing about Midwest noodling and wearing adult-sized duck costumes.

JUNE Drank to erase memories of cockroaches in my cleavage, watched too much CSI, and got numbed by the number of payments left on my student loan. Finished my memoirish, pre-Maui Time saga to complete all my lurid background details about sex, drugs, rock & roll and scholastics you could ever

want. Told you what’s new in the business of breakups, including Revisionist Romance Disorder and Bob’s Backburner Strategy.

JULY Went to a Sexual Chemistry class, learned to blame everything on hormones, and discovered that the evil of excess estrogen lies in the use of Teflon cooking pans and (gasp) chocolate, but that the aphrodisiacal and otherwise benefits of cacao far outweigh its malevolence (yippee!). Explained my philosophies on the ole “biological clock” and how I am not interested in fixing my watch.

Confessed that I’ve seen every Keanu Reeves movie from 1986 to 2005, without really trying. Really!

AUGUST Realized shopping for a car is much like searching for Mr. Right and that, at least for now, he didn’t take the shape of an early ‘90s gold Volvo station wagon. Told you of my most secret Sapphic desires and experiences, which did NOT involve Angelina Jolie or Girls Gone Wild videos. Answered your most common questions, introduced you to my new ride—and new man.

SEPTEMBER Defined my current state of affairs according to Newton’s Laws of Motion then went to New York, where I delighted in cornfields, RV karaoke-ing, dive bars and upscale sex boutiques, the surreal rural beauty of Amish settlements in Pennsylvania and the effect of lobster risotto on Jen’s ability to connect with strangers.

OCTOBER Shocked you—and myself—with my newfound relationship status, discovered the world isn’t coming to an end and that I should work at McDonald’s. Then I really pissed you off by surveying people’s very real misfortunes with sexual injuries, which, in essence, reconfirmed why I do what I do and write about it, “chafed vagina” and all. Gave you my Halloween Top Fives, including what things scare me (e.g. Gumby) and what horror films make me hot (like Hellraiser).

NOVEMBER Described my first fateful meeting with the man who would soon wake himself up with thunderous farts in my bed and capture my heart. Went out solo to Charley’s and became enamored with a gay ex-con who wasn’t gay, quizzed you on which Maui Time staffer eats peanut butter and takes dates to Black Flag concerts. Became a cheerleader for Sweet Action magazine, a cool new artistic porn rag for girls. Obsessed on television series generally involving New York City, psychic DA assistants, and Hollywood’s hateful schedule.

DECEMBER Shared letters from Jen, who’d recently moved back home to Philadelphia and was having a hard time adjusting, got sucked into an afternoon of watching Lifetime holiday movies about successful journalists who fall madly in love with each other, and pickpocketers who fall in love with department store security guards. Then Krista and I had double shopping orgasms, and met Jersey Boy. What’s next?
