Pull your collective heads out of the sand and get mad, real mad. Your little spoiled, rich draft-dodger and his band of scoundrels have pillaged the bank, violated international law, attempted to make a mockery of the UN (which backfired), lied to the nation and used the pain and shock of 9/11 to perpetuate fear and manipulate Congress. We have been duped by a little pathological liar and his band of wealthy thieves. They have pulled the plug on you, the majority, the backbone and life of this country, the source of all the tax revenue and trillions of dollars in consumerism. You truly have the power to stop the debacle that has befallen this country. But to do this you must give up the notion that to protest the government is not patriotic when in fact, protesting is your patriotic duty. "The Great Lie" is unraveling, the truth will always emerge; it has to because there is too much at stake right now. Our country is in a fix. We have the strongest military but rank 38 in the world for education, which is spiraling down every year. We have no universal health care in this country! We can’t take care of our own people, but we can build a bunker bomb and spend billions of dollars on weapons of mass destruction. We read your Eh Brah! a few weeks ago and are pleased to know there is a way to inform the public about dishonest and manipulative people. I am writing to implore your assistance with a particular car repair shop on the island. What a fucking joke they are!!! The so-called “owner” has no knowledge of automobiles whatsoever. That should have been my first sign that something was amidst. When I went to pick up my car, the owner (a loud mouth, self-centered drunk always accompanied by a can of beer in his filthy establishment) told me my car wasn’t ready yet. When I came back later that day to pick my car up, it was gone. It was Friday night, so I said I would call on Saturday. But to my fucking surprise, while driving my friend’s car in Lahaina later that Friday, I spotted the bastard owner driving around in my car, smoking a cigarette with, get this, a beer in his right hand. Drinking and smoking while driving my fucking car!!! When I walked up to approach him, he saw me and took off. Saturday, I’m back at the shop and still, after two hours of waiting, no car. Give me a break. I hired you to work on my car, not cruise Front Street on the fucking weekend. So folks, be careful where you take your car and never trust a slimy grease monkey.

COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time.
Supply provides about 35 million gallons per day on average. So you can see we have only tapped in to less than 10 percent of the groundwater available and that doesn’t even take into consideration surface water - all the rain that goes straight into the ocean. I think we have the water resources available. We haven’t tapped into them because there’s cost involved with it. Conservation is by far the cheapest way to increase your water supply.

Water Shortage 1. What are you doing to conserve water? 2. Where does your tap water come from? 3. Are the current water restriction policies fair? 4. What can Maui County do to prevent water shortages? 5. Is desalinization a viable solution to the water shortages on Maui?
JACKY TAKAKURA, INFORMATION SPECIALIST, DEPT. OF WATER SUPPLY, WAILUKU 1. What is the Department of Water Supply doing to conserve water? Well, one thing we’re doing is giving away low flow fixtures for free. All people have to do is come to the county building and they can get a new shower head or faucet aerator or hose nozzle. Another thing we’re doing is if we do get
reports of water wastage, I am calling these people. We can’t force people to cut back and we can’t dictate how they’re going to use water but we can at least ask just so that they are aware that people are watching. 2. For Central Maui, which is where I live, it comes from the Iao aquifer and the Waihee aquifer - that’s extremely high quality water. For Upcountry, it’s surface water and groundwater mainly surface water. Lahaina is groundwater and surface water mixed. But all of it meets state and federal standards. 3. They strive to be fair and that’s very difficult. I believe they’re as fair as they can be. It’s not easy. 4. Well, the biggest one is everybody checking for leaks because those are the ones that we don’t know about and there’s no benefit in that water going anywhere - and it’s easy to do. And then it’s just simply being aware of it. 5. At this point, desal (desalinization) has become a lot more expensive. Here on Maui, according to the Water Commission, if you were to look at all the aquifers, all the groundwater on Maui, there is a potential of 476 million gallons per day available and the Department of Water
RESIDENT/HOMEOWNER, KULA 1. Well, I try to only wash clothes, instead of every day or every other day - I try to do it like once a week. And I don’t water. I try to watch when it rains so I don’t water very much and I don’t leave the water running. I take a shower more than I take a bath because a bath takes a lot of water. 2. I don’t know but I understand it’s very bad. We boiled some of it when we ran out of purified water and we found black stuff in the water. It was really bad, at the bottom of the stainless steel pots was all this black, almost like charcoal or something or rust but only it was black. And I have no idea where it comes from, but wherever it comes from it’s not good. It has a horrible taste - even the cats won’t drink it. The cats really like to drink a lot of water, but not bad water. 3. We don’t even hear about them up there. It’s like we’re in another country - it’s very strange. 4. I think they should put a limit on how much you can water your yard, especially in Kula you really don’t need to. It’s always green, so I don’t think you need to use that much water. Put a limitation on people and a fine - I mean if you’re
caught watering 24/7 around the clock, you should be fined. I think there should be more literature out, mailed to people, not just articles written. We just don’t hear about it enough and I think there should be some television and radio announcements and it should be a regular thing in the newspaper. 5. I think that would be fine, except I do hear that the ships that come in don’t always relieve all the defecation out that comes in. So if they’re going to use that water, how are they going to purify it for all the feces and things that are in the water? You know, they’d have to do something about that. If they’re going to use that for drinking water, I think the ships should be fined because I know for a fact they don’t drop it out as far as they should.
CARMELLA GENEREUX, RESIDENT/HOMEOWNER, KIHEI 1. Taking short showers, not running my sink water when washing dishes. That’s about it because I’ve got to keep my lawn green. I’m unable to conserve water because I have to keep my yard and front lawns green due to Association standards. 2. Oh, I guess Iao Valley. 3. I don’t think so. I think they restrict the people Upcountry more than they do the people in Kihei due to the hotel businesses and whatever, so you know we waste more water down in the Wailea and Kihei area. 4. Build more reservoirs, I guess, and dams and water storage systems. 5. Yes, I think it is.

Authoritarians Gone Wild Whether, Not Who, is the Question About the 2004 Election He has canceled elections in Iraq. He will probably cancel them in Afghanistan. Will George W. Bush put the kibosh on elections in the United States next year? That's the big question buzzing around left-of-center political circles. Even the most cynical pundits, journalists and activists wouldn't give this nightmare scenario a passing thought under normal circumstances. But things no longer seem normal. The thuggish manner in which the current administration seized power in 2000, combined with its radical unraveling of the Bill of Rights and a knack for getting its way no matter what, have led some progressives to worry that Bush might suspend the 2004 race as a prelude to dictatorship. They've read a similar tale before; it was set in Germany in 1933--and they don't like the part where they end up wearing grey in a prison camp. "I don't even mind if the Democrats get stomped next year," a writer who despises Bush tells me. "I expect that. So long as they lose because the elections actually take place, I'll be happy." Frightened by Bush's rapidly accruing personal power and the Democrats' inability and/or unwillingness to stand up to him, panicked lefties worry that he might use the "war on terrorism" as an excuse to declare a state of emergency, suspend civil liberties and jail political opponents. People who have spoken out against Bush are talking exit strategy--not Alec Baldwin style, just to make a statement, but fleeing the U.S. in order to save their skins. "Do you or your spouse have a Europeanborn parent?" is a query making the rounds. (If you do, you can obtain dual nationality and a European Union passport that would allow you to work in any EU member nation.) Those whose lineage is 100 percent American are hoping that nations like Canada and France will admit American political refugees in the event of a Bushite clampdown. To these people, whether or not the 2004 elections actually take place as scheduled is the ultimate test for American democracy. At Guantánamo Bay, the United States is converting a concentration camp into a death camp where inmates will be executed without due process or legal representation. Never before in history has a U.S. president contemplated the denaturalization of nativeborn citizens--thus far even people executed for treason have died as Americans-but Bush has drafted legislation that would allow him to strip anyone he calls an "enemy combatant" of their citizenship and have them deported. By any objective standard he has already gone way too far, but for many it would take the cancellation or delay of the elections to confirm that we
are trading in our wounded democracy for a fascist state. Lincoln considered suspending the 1864 election because of the Civil War, but ultimately tabled the idea. To date nothing has ever prevented an American presidential election from being held on time. It's easy to come up with a scenario in which canceling the 2004 election could be made to appear reasonable. Imagine that, a few weeks before Election Day, "dirty bombs" detonate simultaneously in New York and Washington. Government, media and political institutions and personnel lie ruined in smoking rubble and ash; hundreds of thousands of people have been murdered. The economy, already teetering on the precipice, is shoved into depression. How could we conduct elections under such conditions? Republicans have already floated the don'tchange-horses-in-midstream argument. After Democratic presidential Sen. John Kerry criticized Bush recently, GOP National Committee Chairman Mark Racicot took him to task not for his specific remarks, but rather for "daring to suggest the replacement of America's commander-in-chief at a time when America is at war." The White House website's "frequently asked questions" section indicates that the "war" is expected to continue well beyond 2004: "There is no silver bullet, no single event or action that is going to suddenly make the threat of terrorism disappear. This broad-based and sustained effort will continue until terrorism is rooted out. The situation is similar to the Cold War, when continuous pressure from many nations caused communism to collapse from within. We will press the fight as long as it takes." The Cold War lasted 46 years; does Bush intend to remain in office that long? Our boy president has plenty of reason to worry about his election chances. A new CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll says that only 50 percent of Americans would vote for Bush over a generic unnamed Democrat--the lowest number since 9/11. Two-thirds say that Bush lied about or exaggerated the threat from Iraq's WMDs, and a steady flow of body bags from Afghanistan and Iraq has made 53 percent aware that the occupations are going poorly. Pollsters report that most people trust Democrats to rescue the sinking economy--and few believe that Bush's tax cuts will help them. Bush may be the kind of guy who sees 99 percent odds as 2 percent short of a sure thing, but I bet he'll look at his $200 million campaign war chest and decide to let the people decide. He'll surely want to win legitimately in 2004--albeit for the first time. Though they're capable of anything, Bush's people probably know that Americans wouldn't stand for two putsches in four years. Still, you have to hand it to him: The fact that Democrats are terrified of ending up imprisoned by an American Reich is the ultimate tribute to Bush's artful bullying-and sad confirmation of the impotence of his would-be, should-be opponents.

COCONUT WIRELESS MONDAY, JULY 14 Ah, back to work and back to the real world. And it's back to the real world for 33-year-old John D. Cabaccang as he finished serving his 45-day jail term for stealing a car from the parking lot at Pauwela Cannery Center. What are the terms of his probation for this conviction? Judge Joel August described the plea agreement as "very generous" and stated that Cabaccang will be on probation and is not to return to the parking lot ever again. Dun dun dun!!! Uh oh, no more parking lot for you. Cabaccang's public defender said that he deserved a chance at probation because he doesn't have a serious record in Hawaii. Cabaccang missed his first sentencing date in May and was thrown back in the slammer later that month for driving a 4Runner that was recently reported stolen. But hey, at least those cars in the Pauwela Cannery Center parking lot are nice and safe. As for the rest of you, lock your doors. On the subject of theft, Marine Cpl. Quentin Gwynn had his backpack full of valuables (including money, a camera and identification) stolen at Waimea Bay as he rescued a 16-year-old local from drowning. "Help me, I'm drowning," or "Help me, I've been robbed"? It just goes to show that being a good guy does pay off… wait no it doesn't. This one does end on a happy note as people from around the community pitched in
to replace what was stolen, Gwynn's hotel stay was comped and a man bought him dinner. The 16-year-old was apparently having a contest with his friend to see who could hold their breath longer. I guess he won.
TUESDAY, JULY 15 The principal at Waihee Elementary School announced today that school would not start up again on July 24 but would instead be delayed until July 28 due to, you guessed it, construction. It turns out that road construction projects aren't the only undertakings that drag ass on Maui. My first question is: "Why would you start school on a Thursday anyway?" Give the kids those four more days and get 'em back to learnin' on Monday. In any case, to you parents out there, if your kid goes to Waihee Elementary and is the only child at the bus stop on Thursday, it's because the other kids' parents read Maui Time and don't. Well, an oddball 43-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in jail today for a laundry list of offenses that stemmed from several occasions of violence and odd behavior. In May of 2002, Alfred Baisa was arrested for climbing onto the roof of the Kahului Safeway where he proceeded to, get this, lob heavy roof tiles at the police. In December of 2001, swearing that he was acting on a message sent to him from God, Baisa threatened two of his Haiku neighbors with a sword. He said that God told him that they had molested a young girl. Nothing more needs to be said here. You need help.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 15 Who wants to marry a millionaire community college? Well, now's your chance. Maui Community College will receive $10 million for their job-training program for Hawaii's rural areas. The initial grant for the project was for $200,000. Well, $200,000 to $10 million…that's one hell of a jump. The new grant is the largest ever given to a Hawaiian community college. This calls for good ol’ fashion college party - who's got the keg? I'll pump. While MCC is getting money, the government is having trouble hanging on to ours. Gov. Lingle and Legislature discussed the current status of Hawaii's budget today. Some legislators said that we are above even while Lingle played the cautious hand. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hawaii was bankrupt right now with all of the recent scandals. Let’s go down the list: the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau is under investigation for numerous "mishaps" in their $151 million 2001-2002 tourism promotion program. Next, Gov. inmate. According to accusations, he handled himself inappropriately on five separate occasions with a 44-year-old female inmate in the Wailuku facility and, as a result, is now on unpaid leave. Apparently you don't just have to watch your butt in the shower anymore. Criminals are all over the place these days. Honolulu police let us know today that Alan Alika Vegas, 39, a man I like to call “the digitive”, has apparently been seen in Haiku. And why would I call him “the digitive”? He's a fugitive missing his right index finger. Clever name, huh? I know, I'm a mental midget. He is wanted on Oahu and has eight felony offenses to his credit. If anybody sees a 6'1", 225-pound man with brown hair and brown eyes, missing his right index finger, first get out of his way and second call somebody with a gun (preferably a police officer). Some tour guides in Washington D.C. should also be shot for their tour ramblings regarding the King Kamehameha statue in Sanctuary Hall. The statue shows the famed king in his birthday suit and tour guides claim that he openly trotted around with his happy business fully exposed at all times. Not so, said Hawaii's Representatives, Neil Abercrombie and Ed Case, who sent a letter of disapproval today regarding the issue. Just for the record, they were clothed while doing so.
FRIDAY, JULY 17 Take a shower, get a skin rash. That doesn’t sound right. A study by university students found that 20 of 98 upcountry residents surveyed have had skin, eye or respiratory problems believed to be linked to the water supply in their area. According to reports, the water is very acidic and has traces of lead in it from old pipes. The additive used in upcountry water had been changed in response to earlier reports but still no dice. A free tip for the day: plug your nose on the way to Kihei. If you smell an almost unbearable stench while driving past Kealia Pond, it’s not the odor of wet, dirty canine butthole buried in the sand and fermented to perfection as I had originally thought. It’s the smell of rotting fish. The pond is drying up and the fish (and our nostrils) are paying the price. It's stinky.

Increasingly, chickens are being kept as pets in suburban homes, according to an Associated Press writer (with scant evidence). A Bala Cynwyd, Pa., family has nine chickens, which are "aesthetically pleasing," said the owner, even "cool." A Cedar Hill, Mo., woman recalled the 38 chickens she has had over the years and said "the best part" was "knowing them as individuals." Another Bala Cynwyd woman said her chickens are faithful in the way they follow her around the yard and are "very sweet. They give back."
The burglar who is captured because his tracks lead away from a crime scene in the mud or snow is a story category previously identified as “No Longer Weird.” However, in May, Albert Jackson Dowdy, 22, in Grants Pass, Ore., took incompetence to a new level. According to police, he tried to smash a glass door with a paint can, but the can broke open. Dowdy eventually got into the home, said police (total take: a can of tuna fish and a box of oatmeal), but on his way out stepped in the spilled paint and created tracks to a nearby motel, where police eventually arrested him.

Soroptomists International Ritz cracker covered tent and a tent that resembled a bridal shop. Each relay donated door prizes for teams and individuals that raised the most money. There were contests based on the theme such as pajama costumes and tent decoration. Some people went all out to impress the judges. At the event, teams sell everything from water to scrunchie so we can, "scrunch out Cancer.” There are informative sessions with doctors to show how to detect prostate and breast cancer. Doctors are there to provide free skin screenings to check for skin cancer and of course there were long lines to visit the masseuse. Not all team members were adults. The youth had a strong showing proving that they care too. In Lahaina, the two Grand Marshals were Stephanie Probst and Ty Scott, both cancer survivors who attend fifth grade at Kamehameha III. Maui County, with five out of six relays completed, has managed to raise $236,000. That money goes to help find a cure for cancer, to prevent cancer, to educate about cancer, to provide services to those who have been diagnosed with cancer and even for those who have survived the experience so they can get screened for relapses. Money also goes to train specialists to treat victims and to support those who need it. It's community support that allows the American Cancer Society to continue its studies. By 2014, they hope to have found a cure for Cancer. The success of the relays and the Cancer Society comes from the fact that it affects so many people. It’s safe to say that, if asked, everyone could name someone in their life who has been diagnosed. So many people support this cause because they know that one day they might need its support in return. Every year the organization grows, the foundation grows and the following grows. There is one more Maui County Relay event scheduled for this year and it is expected to raise the total to over $250,000. This last event will be held on Lanai, so if you need an excuse to play a round at Manele or Koele, go early and stay all night to walk for a cure. The relay is set for Friday July 25-26 at the Lanai Recreation Center soccer field. These last couple of weekends, our island locals held a few pretty awesome parties and no, they weren't baby luaus or graduation parties. They gathered for a cause. Prior to these events they could be seen fund-raising and collecting money any way they knew how, just to help an organization called the American Cancer Society for an event called the Relay For Life. ACS holds thousands of relays all across the nation and Maui is on the list. Maui puts on six relays throughout the year, which are held all over the county and organizes more relays through one office than any other county in Hawaii. Cancer is one of the leading killers among people across the globe, second only to heart disease. It does not discriminate against race, religion, sex, anything. Everyone is susceptible and that is why one organization has chosen to stand up to this killer. The American Cancer Society, which held its first informal Relay in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, the founder of the American Cancer Society ran, walked and jogged around a track for 24 hours to raise money for his cause in his home town of Tacoma, Wash. As of 2003, there are more than 3,800 Relay for Life sites in its eight participating countries. That is an increase of 460 event sites from 2002. This year the Central Maui Relay for Life was held on Saturday July 12 and lasted 12 hours. Around 400 people of all ages stayed up all night to walk, run or jog to fight cancer and to show the community that Cancer never sleeps and neither will they until someone can develop a cure. Altogether they raised approximately $80,000, one survivor donating $11,000 on his own. It just goes to show that our community really does care. Another event was the Molokai Relay for Life, which was held last Friday. They raised $5,000 in their smaller community but accomplished something greater. Other efforts were made such as Hui Ho'okupono initiating the Molokai No Sale Day, urging merchants to refuse the sale of tobacco products from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s West Maui Relay for Life was "Putting on the Ritz" and featured such creative tents as the

In 1992 the Division of Anti-Infective Drug Products were asked to evaluate the proposed use of the anti-biotic resistant genes in agricultural products. The Division’s experts submitted their written opinion. To emphasize their concern, they capitalized all the letters in the key sentence of their original conclusion: "IT WOULD BE A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD TO INTRODUCE A GENE THAT CODES FOR ANTI-BIOTIC RESISTANCE INTO THE NORMAL FLORA OF THE GENERAL POPULATION." Currently, most bioengineered foods contain anti-biotic resistant genes. As of April 2003, there were 166 USDA permitted field tests and an unknown number of EPA experimental use permits planted on thousands of acres on four of Hawaii’s islands. Hawaii has more bioengineering tests being conducted on our soil than anywhere in the United States. No one except for the biotechnology companies and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) know exactly what tests are being conducted on which plants or where the test sites are. Herein lies the problem; with so much secrecy, Maui’s citizens and local government are in the dark as to what is occurring on the Island and how it will affect their health and the environment. This leads to hysteria and misinformation. Not good for our community. Genetic Engineering (GE) alters the gene structure of plants to produce genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Gene-spliced crops are such a new development that there isn't even a commonly agreed upon name for them yet but all such crops have one thing in common: genes from another organism have been artificially transplanted into their DNA. These tests of new and novel proteins arising from new combinations of genes from bacteria, viruses, antibiotics, drugs, chemicals, animals or humans are forcefully inserted into the DNA of the plant and then tested in open-air fields. However, it is not known for sure what the outcome of such tests will be on the environment and on public health. Many of the agents being inserted into plants cause antibiotic resistance. The manufacturers decided that genes coding for resistance to anti-biotic chemicals would be the most economical way to make the experiments work. We shall see.
Shedding Some Light Many people in the community, including Mayor Arakawa, are looking to Dr. Lorrin Pang, the Maui District Health Officer of the State Department of Health (DOH), for answers. He is currently gathering as much information as possible to sort out the facts in this complicated issue. “We must inform people of what is happening and bring the knowledge mainstream to belay the fears of the public, otherwise they will think the worst,” Pang said. “We don’t know what the exact effects are of GMO testing so we can’t begin to educate people. GMOs have the potential to do fantastic things, but there are always losers in there. More research is necessary to keep the losers from spreading to the environment. GE is a method for putting certain genes into vegetables; insulin can be put into plants and harvested, tomatoes can be put into
corn and protozoa that produce insecticide can be inserted into plants. Viruses are often times the agent for getting the beneficial genes into the cell structure of the plant, but we don’t want bacteria and viruses coming back into humans because this may cause antibiotic resistance. Other things can be triggered by this technology, so products need to be tested.” Pang encourages outside regulation of the industry: “The DOH does environmental impact studies (EIS) for big projects by private corporations, but research projects are exempt. Some state legislators want stronger review power because the technology is moving so fast. Senate concurrent resolution (SCR)140 is a bill being proposed to look at research projects more closely, examine how farmers are affected and investigate the feasibility of labeling GMO foods, but it will not mandate. Currently the industry is regulating itself by following certain recommendations, but legislation would be a good idea in case new companies get involved who choose
not to follow the accepted recommendations.” At the present, important information is still being witheld. “Federal permits for GMO research come blacked out because of confidentiality issues and to protect patent rights, so we don’t know exactly what elements are being inserted into which crops.” Pang
said. “An Institutional Review Board (IRB) should be established to regulate GMOs. The IRB would consist of organic farmers, industrial farmers, representatives of the biotech companies, laypeople and scientists, all stating their particular bias, in order to decide if these things will benefit Hawaii and the world, to look at alternatives and to weigh the benefits and harms. I want to keep people from being polarized; everyone must come with an open mind and be willing to hear what the other side has to say.”
Is Organic Farming The Solution? Organic farmers are willing to speak freely about the risks and even the benefits of GE. They are hardworking, small business people connected to the land who see organic farming as the solution to many of society’s problems and are putting their money where their mouth is. “The benefit of organic vs. GMO to Hawaii’s economy and citizens is that organic produce demands a higher premium in the market place and organic farming practices conserve soil and water, do not contaminate the water and don’t poison families, workers or the land,” Kelly Lange, a certification coordinator with Hawaii Organic Farming Association said. Some of the major downsides to GE products seem fairly clear. “The biggest effect that GMOs have on organic crops is through pollen drift contamination,” Lange continued. “There is no protection against pollen drift because winds cross any boundaries. Organic farmers need to frequently test their seeds and trees to assure organic quality and the required seed testing is the most expensive method. Papayas, for example, must be closely tested because they are so commonly genetically engineered with a built in chemical that resists black ring spot virus. We don’t know what effect this modification will have on the environment or on people’s health. There is no evidence either way.”
Concerned Citizens Take Action Maui Tomorrow is an organization working to find out more information about the effects of such practices. One of the goals of Maui Tomorrow is to support family farms by preventing sprawl that drives up the cost of the best agricultural lands. They are striving for a Maui that is self sufficient with its food and energy. Eloise Engman is the founder of GMO Free Maui and is working hard to educate citizens about the dangers of genetic engineering on Maui. They are working to create a GMO Free Maui by educating the public, government and business community about the health, economic and environmental risks of GMOs. People’s food choices are being taken away from them and it is more and more difficult for organic farmers to find the seeds they need. Activists and organic farmers are put on the defensive and expected to come up with the burden of proof. Maui organic papaya farmers, for example, were told by

8 Reasons Why Hawaiians Sho uld Be Benefits of Biotechnology Concerned About Genetic Engineering Monsanto Corp. is one of the world’s largest biotech companies and has been active on Maui for 35 years. They are doing extensive testing here, but are secretive about where the test sites are. Furthermore, Monsanto would not allow me to speak with its people on Maui. Today, Monsanto's biotech field research on the island is focused on the application of naturally occurring DNA into plants, which allows these plants to express proteins. These proteins allow the plants to resist pests, diseases and environmental stresses. The regulatory agencies require biotechnology developers to do field trials to generate important data that allows the regulators to make determinations about whether to allow for the commercial sale of the products. These trials allow scientists to evaluate the performance of the crop under conditions representative of real-farm situations. They generate data on the crop's agronomic performance, environmental impact and often produce materials to use in the safety assessment of the crop. Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) require specific data to be generated that is reviewed to ensure that any crops developed through biotechnology do not pose any adverse effects on the environment or on the health of humans or animals. Stephanie Whalen is the president of the Hawaiian Agricultural Research Center (HARC), which has become an internationally recognized research center. HARC's biotechnology team utilizes techniques such as gene transformation to achieve insect and disease resistance, solve production problems and map genomes to enhance breeding programs. “We see agricultural biotechnology as the next step, the natural progression of traditional breeding,” Whalen said. “There haven’t been any reports that show there is a risk to public health except for incidental exposure to pollen. Biotech testing is on a very small-scale in terms of acreage. The agricultural biotech/seed industry is a great niche in Hawaii.” Hawaii may get a new cash crop from the biotech industry but changes are needed. "The hope of the industry is that over time the market is so flooded with genetically engineered organisms that there's nothing you can do about it. You just sort of surrender," said Don Westfall, Vice President of Promar International, a Washington based food and biotech industry consultant. “There is nothing wrong with making a lot of money, but a large company must freely address exactly how it is earning its money so that citizens can be assured it is not being done at their expense.” Westfall believes that a collective effort is the solution to the biotech controversy. “Everyone on both sides of the issue must share information, communicate and cooperate. People must ask themselves if they want to be a part of the problem or the solution and then take action.” MTW

Birds, bees and wind can carry genetically engineered pollen great distances where it can contaminate other plants. Genetically engineered organisms are alive. Once they escape into the environment, they reproduce and mutate. They can never be recalled. This could be fatal to Hawaii’s plants and animals, 90-per cent of which exists nowhere else on earth. How much will we be spending on biotech contamination in the future?

Pharmcrops, crops that produce drugs and industrial products are being grown on our islands. Here in Hawaii, part of the AIDS virus and blood thinners have been engineered into corn. These pharmcrops can cross-pollinate with corn for human and animal consumption. We have no way of knowing how close pharmcrops are being grown to conventional food crops.

Mycogen Seeds and Pioneer Hi-Bred International have already been fined for violating EPA safety regulations on the islands of Molokai and Kauai. The EPA said Mycogen failed to use appropriate windblocks that prevent the spread of GE corn pollen to conventional crops. Pioneer was accused of growing its crop 12 miles from their approved location.

The effects of genetic engineering on people and the aina are unknown. Almost no independent studies have been done to test the longterm safety of genetic engineering. Without public warning and without our consent, we are already part of a massive experiment here in Hawaii. On October 2, 2000, the US District Court in Washington, DC determined in Allliance for Bio-Integrity v. Shalala that: •The FDA is not regulating GE foods at all. •The FDA’s politically appointed bureaucrats did not follow the advice and warnings of the agency’s scientific staff about GE foods but disregarded them. •There is currently significant disagreement among scientific experts about the safety of GE foods. For example, a new study by Joe Cummins reveals that the GE papaya, approved by the FDA, may contain allergens.

Biopiracy is where corporations take out patents on traditional uses of native flora and fauna. Patent holders have exclusive rights to using the patented method and can charge other users a fee. By patenting traditional methods, it could rob the common heritage of Hawaii and place it in the hands of private enterprise.

Genetically engineered crops pose economic threats to farmers who face huge liability risks, should their genetically engineered crop contaminate conventional crops. Governments often foot the bill for clean up costs. Also, when fields are contaminated by GE crops, farmers are often charged license fees or sued by seed companies for patent infringement. Some GE crops have cost more for farmers to grow than conventional crops due to crop failure, reduced yields, and a requirement to use the seed company's herbicides and pesticides.

The impact of genetic engineering on Hawaii’s agricultural markets remains unknown. Japanese and European consumers look unfavorably upon genetic engineering. Before the GE papaya 90% of the market was Japanese. Japan does not currently accept any GE papayas. The Kona coffee market is 60% Japanese. Many visitors come to Hawaii because of these "exotic" foods. Ag-tourism and eco-tourism may suffer.

The Best Place to Eat in Pa`ia is Now Your North Shore Night Spot

Stillwell’s Bakery & Café While perusing through an astrology book the other day, I discovered, much to my dismay, that my zodiac sign (Pisces) means as an employee, I am most likely to spend my mornings thinking about what to eat for lunch. While I may balk at the mere suggestion that I would forego my diligence in tackling a workload powered by relentless deadlines and the pressures of societal responsibility just to feed my fleeting hunger pains - well, okay, so it’s true. I do love to eat. Nothing warms my belly more than to start off the day with something sweet and delicious. To have dessert for breakfast is my all-time greatest digestive pleasure – other than having dessert for lunch. Although, dessert for dessert is pretty good, too. I digress… My roommate Charlotte planted the seed that Stillwell’s Bakery makes the best Banana Cream Pie, so my trusted lunchtime companion and I set off for Wailuku in hot pursuit. Right off Kaahumanu Avenue, in the vicinity of the War Memorial Complex, awaits our decadent destination, offset from the road by a patio lined with palm fronds and assorted tropical foliage. Even inside the quaint quarters of Stillwell’s and despite the highway’s close proximity, café diners and pastry patrons alike are rewarded with a surprisingly magnificent view of Haleakala Crater and upcountry’s rolling, lush landscape. Once inside, we come face to face with the Kelvinator. The Kelvinator is the bakery’s refrigerated case of delectable pastries, pies and cakes. On the day we visited, we were forced to choose from a sinful assortment of Pecan and Boston Cream Pies, Banana Banana, Lilikoi Mousse and Carrot Cakes and Lilikoi Cheesecake, all of which came whole or by the slice. But wait, there’s also bread pudding, brownies, eclairs, cream horns, Florentine cups, as well as baked apple and peach tarts! How would we decide? Unfortunately for us, the Banana Cream Pies were not yet available, but the nice woman behind the counter said she would be happy to hold a pie for me. “Super!” I said, as my companion and I settled on a Florentine Cup and Baked Peach Tart to tide us over ‘til then. Stillwell’s offers an impressive variety of sandwiches, all made on your choice of their freshly baked breads and come with either chips or Caesar salad – it’s up to

Located at the Entrance to Kaanapali you. They also feature a selection of salads tossed with homemade dressings (that you can also purchase by the bottle), as well as daily specials, Chow Funn, Dry Mein and soup du jour. Ravenous after our encounter with the Kelvinator, we opted for the Tuna Melt on Rye and Crab Salad for lunch, then began to polish off our decadent appetizers. I’ve concluded that none of my astrological worries need warranting after just one bite into my Florentine Cup. A semi-sweet chocolate shell covered in crisp, caramelized almond brittle encased the most delicious Bavarian cream topped with succulent strawberries, and was garnished with a fresh mint sprig. My friend’s Baked Peach Tart was just as heavenly with luscious layers of moist cake, almonds and perfectly spiced peaches. Not forgetting lunch of course, our salad was a heaping mountain of crisp greens, shrimp and crab with grated carrots, cucumbers and a fantastic creamy ranch dressing. I’m quite sure the Tuna Melt also won our favor, as we brazenly inhaled every scrumptious morsel in no time flat. Even the freshly baked roll that accompanied our salad could not be spared! And yes, we still went back for that pie. Stillwell’s Bakery & Café is open Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and serves lunch from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prices are incredibly low for the quantity and quality of portions and goods. (My Banana Cream Pie was only $10.50!) Lunch items range from $3.35 for soup and a roll, to $7.25 for a Clubhouse sandwich or Chef’s Salad. The Justin winery is located in the Adalaide valley, west of Paso Robles in the central coast region of California. Justin and Deborah Baldwin created the winery after purchasing 160 acres of land from the Mennonite Church who, prior to the sale, used the land to grow barley for their cattle. In 1982 the winery planted 72 acres of vines. By 1987, Justin Vineyards was ready to release wine to the public. Since then, the winery has skyrocketed to enormous popularity and has more than doubled in production. Staying focused on quality, Justin Vineyards remains one of the best wineries out of the central coast region. The wine of the week is their 2000 Isosceles, which in the beginning was their reserve wine. This wine is focused on the original French Bordeaux varietal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a little Merlot. The 2000 Isosceles has great aromas of toasty oak, caramel and baked black cherries with some earthy notes. On the palate, you receive a soft pleasant mouthful that leads to raspberry and strawberry flavors. Cedar and spice meet you at the finish with just a bit of tannin. Enjoy this wine with semi rich foods, soft cheese and breads. MTW

Preschool at Kapalua Family Fun Festival Fundraiser
On my first trip to Maui, my family and I took the trip up to Fleming Beach. When we arrived, we all agreed this was the perfect spot for a family looking for a place to relax and really get a sense of the majestic beauty of this island. The waves were a little larger than we were used to but that just made it all the better. There was one thing in particular about this beach park that really caught my eye. Hidden off in the corner was this quaint, adorable, little schoolhouse overlooking the ocean. It was like something straight out of the colonial times when Hawaii was first being settled. I left thinking how lucky the little children who went there were to grow and learn in such a beautiful place. So naturally, when I moved here, I was especially pleased to discover that my favorite little schoolhouse, The Preschool at Kapalua, really was in fact a historical landmark. It was built over 100 years ago and originally served as a church. It was as magical as I had thought it to be! Today 22 children between the ages of 3 and 5 attend school there everyday. Some parents drive from as far as Lahaina each morning to bring their kids to school at this oceanfront landmark. The teachers there absolutely treasure the school. One woman has been teaching at the Preschool at Kapalua for 24 years. Along with the ABCs and 123s, a strong cultural aspect is upheld at the preschool. She and the other teachers are committed to maintaining the Hawaiian glory that has been celebrated at the school for over a century. The children make Hawaiian crafts, learn hula steps and are taught to play Hawaiian instruments - as well as 3 to 5 year olds are able to! Unfortunately, time has taken a toll on this landmark. The Preschool at Kapalua is badly in need of refurbishing. The paint on the walls is chipping. The floors are no longer level. The teachers even joke that the termites hold each others’ hands to keep the building standing. But the sad truth is that this old building has seen its day. Recently, The Kumulani Church took over the task of preserving and restoring this cherished landmark. The plan is to refurbish the schoolhouse in exactly its original form, so it will look just the same, only new. They were successful in recruiting several construction companies to volunteer their services and equipment for the entirety of the project. However, the material for the building's reconstruction will cost about $40,000. That's $40,000 that neither the school nor the church has to spare. Thus the parents of the Preschool at Kapalua have taken on raising these funds to save their children's school.

In doing so, the Family Fun Festival Fundraiser will be held Sunday, June 27, to help raise the money to keep the Preschool at Kapalua's doors open. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will have something for everyone. Of course, several game booths will be set up, like the penny toss where kids can win a real live goldfish if they hit the mark. Hula dancers will be present to keep with the school's Hawaiian theme. Fifty items will be auctioned off in the silent auction, including $100 gift certificates to many of Maui's popular restaurants and six passes to Ulalena. In addition, Hula

Grill, Compadres, Leilani's, Kimo's and Erik's Seafood will all have booths with some of their favorite menu items for sale. All of the proceeds from the food sales will be given to the school. There will also be a jumping castle for kids to unleash their energy. Families can even walk down to the beach and take a dip in the ocean. Indoor restroom facilities will be available and the entire festival will be enclosed so parents don't have to worry about their little ones running off. There is no admission charge. Script will be for sale for $1 each. Most of the activities cost only one script and any additional donations will be accepted and appreciated. Just visit the school and you'll know this place is magical. Whether in its beauty, spirit or in the fact that it gives Maui's young minds a place to learn about sharing and culture and prepares them for what's ahead, it’s magical. Stop by; it's a good cause and could likely do you some good as well. MTW

Despite the immense media hype surrounding Angelina Jolie's less than impressive personal life, her sophomore outing with the video game generated "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" film franchise is even less inspiring. Our bold example of female super hero stature protects the world from the opening of Pandora's mythic box, which a villainous doctor intends to use as a doomsday device. If you've seen the movie's flashy trailer, then you've already seen the film. It's one extended chase scene after another with requisite explosions and gunfire distracting from attractive locations in Hong Kong, Kenya, Tanzania, Greece and China. Director Jan de Bont ("Speed") helms the overblown adventure fluff with listless attention to Lara Croft's mythic sensuality. "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" (2001) was significant inasmuch as it set a new record for opening tickets sold to a movie with a female leading character. It's tempting to draw parallels between Angelina Jolie and Jane Fonda, whose "Barbarella" (1968) widened the eyes of male audiences transfixed by the erotic costumes she wore for her then-husband, director Roger Vadim. But all bets were off when the sex bomb opened her politically attuned mouth as she went on to increase her stock as an independently thinking actress with character driven films like "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" (1969) and "The China Syndrome." Jane Fonda understood her allure as a comic strip character come to life in "Barbarella," but parlayed that sensual ploy into something complex and engaging with her next film "Klute," about a New York call girl, for which she won a Best Actress Oscar (1971). Since winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Girl Interrupted" (2000), Angelina Jolie has worked as a Goodwill Ambassador with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). That relationship seems to have informed Jolie's upcoming film "Beyond Borders," a romance set in Africa where a rebel doctor (Clive Owen) attempts to help natives in the war-torn country. If these conspicuously public convictions seem at odds with Jolie's much publicized marriage and divorce from actor Billy Bob Thornton, it's likely because the actress shoots from the hip more than by sticking to any far reaching vision. What audiences are left with from Jolie's stylized performance in "The Cradle of Life" is something confusingly hollow guided by an appropriately cold British accent. There's no denying that Angelina Jolie has the ideal feminine shape to fill Lara Croft's skintight clothing and that she can execute the physical demands of the role. But what's missing from
Angelina Jolie gets physical Jolie's Lara Croft is an allure of character that an actress like Audrey Tautou ("Amelie") brings to her roles in spades. The soulful magic that Tautou works with every movement of her eyes is something that Jolie is unwilling to share with the camera. It's Jolie's biggest weakness as an actress and is a deal breaker in her inability to elevate the numbingly flat superficiality that Hollywood action movies impose on their audience. The bleary theme of "The Cradle of Life" is a vague and generalized notion of temptation and the ability to refuse it. As a "tomb raider," Lara Croft is a glorified gravedigger whose knowledge of archeology doesn't prevent her from imposing reckless abandon when the treasure she desires warrants it. Politically conscious actors like Tim Robbins and Sean Penn are constantly in the press questioning the U.S. Government's reckless acts of smash and grab tactics that have sunk the American economy into a dark abyss. Clint Eastwood's upcoming "Mystic River" is a meditation on revenge (starring Robbins and Penn) that reflects the kind of ethical convictions that those actors affirm. Whether or not Angelina Jolie's future acting choices resonate with the humanitarian that she claims to be or whether she continues as a parody of imperfect sexuality is an uncertainty designed to keep audiences guessing. The question is will they still be willing to pay at the box office to be merely kept on the hook. (PG-13) RT-122 mins.

I Always Fall for the Bad Guy... The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Maui Mall and Front Street Theaters – check showtime listings for details Every once in awhile, I get in the mood for a little mindnumbing, action-packed, fantasy-filled entertainment. And when I’m not at Longhi’s on Friday, I opt for a more pedestrian kind of stimulation. Oh, here’s a good story - a group of adventurers, including a vampiress, an invisible man, another man who is eternally young (and sexy – yowza), an American secret agent (and you call it science-fiction!), a spiritual, genius inventor with loads of cash (sounds like some old hippie from upcountry), an uncontrollable monster-by-day/scientist-by-night and a crusty, old but lovable Scottish hunter from Africa, gang together to fight some dude with bad skin and presumably bigger issues as he seeks, yep, you guessed it, world domination. Actually, it’s a rockin’ good time and I highly recommend this film.
Spawning Spectacle Tuesday, 7-9:30 p.m. at the Maui Ocean Center Everyone, and I mean everyone, has been invited to witness the miraculous and sometimes disconcerting world of rice coral sexual reproduction, which generally occurs a few days after the new moon in June and July. The Maui Ocean Center is hosting their 3rd Annual Spawning Spectacle and will donate a portion of the proceeds (talk about sexploitation!) to Project S.E.A.-Link, a local non-profit organization that promotes marine education and conservation. Admission to the Spawning Spectacle is $20 for adults and $15 for children ($15/$12.50 for members) and includes a presentation by David Gulko, Aquatic Biologist with the Department of Land and Natural Resources. ‘Around the Pacific’ cuisine will be served in the Living Reef Building, along with drink specials (how appropriate for a little sex talk, eh?).

Hawaii Int’l Jazz Festival Friday and Saturday at Wailea Marriott Resort No, you don't have to be from Louisiana and wear dark glasses to enjoy jazz. You don't even need to be able to keep a beat. The Hawaii International Jazz Festival is one of the most impressive and interesting jazz events to visit Maui and is open to and entertaining for all audiences. The focus is extremely unique and has roots that run deep into the culture and history of Hawaii. Often linked to such Hawaiian mainstays as the slack key guitar, and even a sub-genre of that artform, jazz music is as much a part of Hawaii as any other place in the world. Evening concerts alone are worth making the trip to Wailea and jam sessions following the shows just add to the appeal and esteem. On Friday, you can hear the broad sounds of international jazz. If you are interested in jazz on any level, you need to experience the influence the international scene has given to the genre and get a taste of the style that exists outside the United States. Saturday's focus is Hawaiian jazz and will showcase the style and contributions that are uniquely Hawaiian. Informative sessions including free jazz education classes on Friday and Saturday make the event not only entertaining but interactive. VARIOUS ARTISTS "SOME OF THE YOUNG" Being a non-vegetarian I can't really add any anecdotes in support of this project. Not to say I don't support the idea but you get what I mean. PETA or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals garner support from the ever-evolving activist/punk band frontman/independent music label owner, Fat Mike and his Fat Wreck Chords label. Along for the ride are bands like Hot Water Music, The Faint, The Eyeliners, The Used, Midtown, (gulp) Good Charlotte and the typical bands associated with activism like Propagandhi and Anti-Flag. Not a lot of unreleased stuff but excellent if you dig the cause. -Fat Wreck Chords
TRICKY “VULNERABLE” Tricky’s one of those rare artists that I will forever be entranced by, and on this latest CD, he’s found a new muse - her name is Constanza Francavilla and she’s awesome, although I hope that we haven’t heard the last from Martine Topley-Bird, the chanteuse from Tricky’s previous albums including my all-time fav, Maxinquaye. Lately, Tricky’s been getting the runaround from critics (eh, who needs ‘em?!) for his sometimes strange, always interesting musical experiments. Whatever, I think he’s great, this album is less obviously commercial than Blowback, and thankfully, Tricky’s back to what he’s good at, making dark, sultry, trip-hop with haunting female vocals backed by his throaty-sexy growling. If Sting had been born to grow up during our current flow of pop music he might have started a band much more akin to The RX Bandits. I only say that because their vocalist here sounds so much like Sting you could almost trick someone into believing that The Police got back together. Okay, maybe it’s not that close but there’s definitely a heavy influence here. Laid back ska tempos and building pop melodies display The RX Bandits willingness to thrive in an over-saturated genre without sounding like any of the other bands today (yeah, except for the whole “sounding like Sting thing”). On a label like Drive Thru a band like this sticks out like a sore thumb because they don’t have an immediately similar sound to guys like The Starting Line or New Found Glory. Let it also be said that I find it commendable for a band with this kind of exposure to still be playing ska music in a pop-cultural climate that has dismissed it years ago. They must have an awesome live show to boot. Definitely worth a listen. –Drive Thru Records
THE ROOTS “PHRENOLOGY” I had to infiltrate Gannon’s column here because I’m very excited about this latest Roots CD. This is my current favorite album, although it’s been out since last year and it just kicks ass. Genre crossover is not a new concept, but The Roots innovate and create their own style in mixing soul, hiphop, rock, pop and even punk, and it’s evident from the catchy soul genius of “The Seed (2.0)” to (possibly the only song that Gannon will appreciate) “!!!!!!!”, a shocking and valiantly raw punk song for such a well-respected, old school hip hop band known for their amazing live performances. THE WEAKERTHANS “RECONSTRUCTION SITE” (RELEASED IN AUGUST) Sometimes I listen to The Weakerthans and wonder how bored John K. Samson (vocalist/songwriter of The WK’s) must have been with playing bass in Propagandhi. He always strikes this balance between the styles of Bob Dylan and Paul Westerberg (post-The Replacements) in not only his lyrics but his singing as well. He songs tend to come off like someone explaining the story behind a picture or watching someone sitting alone at a diner and imagining what their story is. It’s very poetic, really. Musically on this album John and the rest of the band toy around with folk and country music which for a band like this is a smooth transition. With that said it’s clear that this band isn’t for everyone. Too slow and introspective for the punk circles. Too genuine and explorative for the emo crowds. The biggest example of this is a song that John sings from the perspective of his cat watching him. I know, “what the hell” right? RUST ISSUES I met this really nice guy when I was on vacation. We hit it off so well that he's flying from Canada to see me. The bad news is that I'm a struggling artist (he's a well-to-do professional), and my old car doesn't pass the test. I know material things are superficial, but pushing my car to get it started isn't exactly seductive. When I pick him up at the airport, should I rent a car and say mine is in the shop? --Parked Carcass What's going through this guy's head right now is probably not "Gee, I hope she's got a great car, or I'll have to dump her at the airport and fly right back home." He probably hasn't given it a moment's thought. Supply him with the facts -that your car has CARS, the mechanical version of SARS -- and present the notion that renting might be a good idea. Chances are, the person whose job description doesn't include the word "struggling" will volunteer. If he wants to ride with you in your clunker, getting stalled isn't the worst thing in the world. After all, it does have a back seat, doesn't it?
SLAMMER QUEENS Women slam car doors the way men leave the seat up! Why are they compelled to shove the door shut with such force that the glass nearly breaks? Whenever I allow women to enter or exit my car without my supervision, I fear the result will require major repairs. Is this a conspiracy against all men everywhere? --Doormat Why do girls slam other people’s car doors so hard? For the same reason boys slam other people’s car doors so hard. They fear, if they don’t, that the door won’t shut all the way and the battery will die; probably in the middle of some snowy wasteland. The driver will be forced to subsist on packets of Taco Bell sauce until he finally wastes away or freezes to death, whichever comes first. Of course, in the case of hostile types like you, I’m sure your passengers would be happy to make an exception.
