LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR DEVELOPERS ARE NOT EVIL HE SAYS Notice every time you hear the county council and planning department talking about construction they always refer to developers as the evil guys making millions of dollars off the poor home owner. How far from the truth can they get? With every roadblock they keep throwing at them it's a wonder the developers even survive. The planning department constantly dreams up new ways to make the developer pay for extra this and extra that and it keeps growing. All you ever hear in these meeting is how they want the developers and the working sector to pay for all the costs of everything, which is just a way for the county to provide nothing. Now we have people in our planning department who came from the mainland, only a short time ago, whose documented forte has been to stop development! Now they fight to raise affordable homes from 15% to 40% for the developer, which will only spread the gap between lower income families and the rich. The middle, hard working class will be left out in the cold with no programs to help them afford any kind of home. Think about this next time our political officials are rallying for your vote. - Steve W. Kear, Kihei

TAXES FOR KIDS On May 28 President Bush signed into law a tax cut that gives millionaires an average of $93,500 in tax cuts this year. But this very same law gives no tax relief to 12 million children in hard working lowincome families - including one million children in military families - because their parents earn too little to qualify. The Senate took a first step in rectifying this injustice when it overwhelmingly voted to expand the child tax credit for low income working families on June 5. One week later, however, Republican leaders in the House pushed through a bill that held 12 million children hostage to even bigger tax cuts for higher income families. The House bill is a cynical ploy that provides 6 times the amount of tax cuts to upper-income families

than it does to the low-income families that need help right now in order to buy groceries and pay their bills. You have the power to right this wrong. Tell the House and Senate leadership to agree to the Senate version of the child tax credit bill so low-income children can benefit immediately. In order to truly Leave No Child Behind, you must use the power of your office to help the 12 million children your own tax bill left behind. - Patti Thibaudeau

POLITICALLY CORRECTING US I am amazed at the last couple of issues' content. Best place to kill your wife?! 100 puppies or a homeless man?! The callous disregard your publication has shown abused women and the homeless is pretty low. There are women all over Maui County with black eyes, receiving death threats; as well as people without a place to sleep, eating out of trash cans...Good people. People like you and me. Please give some consideration to those in the community who need our support! - Tom Bellerue, Makawao The editor responds: Cool letter, Tom. Thanks for your interest in Best Of. We put a lot of work into it and we’re glad you appreciated it. To show you our support, we’re sending you a complimentary, one of a kind, custom made Maui Time Weekly CD opener. Aloha!

PARKING IN LAHAINA

Parking Attendants at ProPark lot near Foodland

1. Have you ever driven through Lahaina? 2. Did you experience any difficulty parking? 3. If so, why do you think there is so little parking in Lahaina? 4. Do you think the county should improve its public transportation system?

1. Yes, everyday. 2. Yes, but I usually find a free space somewhere. 3. Lahaina is a small town with a lot of businesses, tourists and employees, all trying to park. 4. Yes, get some buses or something. 5. Businesses should add more parking for their patrons.

STEPHANIE BRONSON, 5. What else do you think can be done to alleviate the problem?

On 4th family visit from L.A. 1. Yes. We rent a car when we visit. 2. We park in the paid lots but the prices are pretty reasonable.

NANCY MONTOYA, Real Estate Agent, Maui Resident of 32 Years 1. Yes. 2. Yes, especially near the Lahaina Shopping Center. 3. Because the county hasn't provided enough public parking for residents and visitors. 4. Absolutely, for as populated as we are, there needs to be better planning for public transportation services. At least they made hitchhiking legal. Back in the seventies, it wasn't. 5. Definitely. I think when it comes to parking in Lahaina, privately owned businesses should validate, especially all the restaurants.

3. Lahaina is the hippest town everyone wants to be here. That's what happens, look at Manhattan. We don't know exactly how the tax dollars are being used from the huge tourist industry but it could perhaps be used to provide more city-owned public parking lots. 4. We can't really say because we don't use it. We just drive when we come here but it's always a good idea to improve public transportation, especially for the people who live here. 5. Between Highway 30 and Front Street there could be some kind of parking structure of just 2 or 3 tiers. Lack of parking drives people away from thriving towns. We've seen it happen near our own town.

USA Today profiled the Lord's Gym in the West Palm Beach suburb of Greenacres, catering to devout Christians (sales pitch: "Your body is a temple for Christ"), where mothers say they can bring their teenage daughters without men ogling them. But Reuters profiled a "Slavercise" class in New York City, where dominatrix "Mistress Victoria" led her clients through punishing fitness and weight-loss routines while wielding an intimidating riding crop.

underarm odor has a stress-reducing effect on women. The Wall Street Journal, profiling the Gillette Co.'s research lab, reported that lab director Ahmet Baydar is working not just on ordinary antibacterial-plus-fragrance products but on a substance that actually blocks odor receptors in other people's noses. (Gillette's tests use a synthetic malodor compound so strong that more than a few molecules can make a room uninhabitable, and involve five odor judges who sniff actual armpits and rate them 1 to 10, with 10 meaning "your head snaps back.")

SERIOUSLY IN DENIAL

In July, at an isolated hospital in Peru's Andes mountains, Dr. Cesar Venero realized that patient Centeno Quispe could not be airlifted to a full-service hospital in time to save his life from a brain injury. Luckily, the hardware store in the town of Andahuaylas was open, and with a drill and pliers, Venero (who earns the equivalent of about US$5,000 a year) saved Quispe's life by making the necessary holes in the skull to remove the clots that were putting pressure on the brain.

N.Y., dungeonmaster John Jamelske, 68, sentenced to 18 years to life in July for holding a series of girls and women as sex slaves underneath his house (though all were eventually released), told the judge that he thought of the slaves as his "buddies," that he would get together with them in the "party room," and that he did not "kidnap" them because no ransom was requested. And in Pa., expediatrician Alva Hartwright, sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing homeless teenage boys in his care, continued in May to insist that the many enemas he gave them were "medically necessary" and that the reason he had a huge cache of child pornography was because he found the pictures "aesthetically pleasing," in the same way as his other photos of landscapes and wildlife.

WEIRD LABOR NEWS According to Norway's Newspaper VG (which is currently running a series on odd summer jobs), teenager Svein Tore Hauge's job may take the prize: Armed with a shovel and a container, he works at Saerheim Plant Research, following cattle around and catching their excreta before it can hit the ground. Because the work-product is used for scientific study, it must be "pristine," free of grass, dirt, foreign bacteria, etc. Sometimes, it's easy, he said, but, "Sometimes it just sprays in all directions."

Rall's Rule Of Ideological Balance Only a Liberal Democrat Can Beat Bush Leftist or centrist? That's the big question facing Democrats in the run-up to next year's primaries. "The way to beat George Bush is not to be like him," declares former Vermont governor Howard Dean, whose feisty antiwar rhetoric has caught fire among liberals and made him the current frontrunner for the nomination. Seizing the centrist standard of the Clintonites, Senator Joe Lieberman warns that a liberal standard-bearer like Dean "could lead the Democratic Party into the political wilderness for a long time to come. It could be, really, a ticket to nowhere." Who's right? "[Democrats'] major goal is to beat George W. Bush," says Dick Bennett of the American Research Group, whose latest poll shows a third of Democrats undecided in evaluating the nine declared hopefuls. Among the other two-thirds, Dean leads, followed by liberal Sen. John Kerry, Lieberman and Rep. Dick Gephardt. Turning left means disaster, argues the centrist Democratic Leadership Council: they say Dean, who opposes the Iraq war, would be 2004's George McGovern. When DLC poster boy Bill Clinton co-opted GOP platform planks like welfare reform and deficit reduction in 1992, he defeated the first President Bush. "The Democratic Party has an important choice to make: Do we want to vent or do we want to govern?" asks DLC chairman Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana. "The [Bush] administration is being run by the far right. The Democratic Party is being taken over by the far left."

History suggests that that may be a good thing. Try to imagine an ideological 50-yard line, a perfect middle-of-the-road position that represents the median of American political thinking at any given time. George W. Bush falls as far to the right of that line as any president in memory. Bill Clinton sat a little to the left of that line; FDR was about as far to the left as Bush is to the right. In modern history, challengers have been most likely to beat incum-

enough to make them turn to a left-wing Democrat. Clinton ran as a moderate--even his health-care plan, his platform's sole concession to liberalism, fell far short of socialized medicine--and won over an electorate eager for a change, but not a drastic one. The DLC formula also applies to 1976, when a moderate Southern Democrat beat incumbent president Gerry Ford, a moderate Republican. Revisionist GOP pundits like to cast Jimmy Carter as a charter member of the "lunatic left"

“THE BEST WAY TO BEAT GEORGE BUSH IS NOT TO BE LIKE HIM.” bent presidents or vice presidents when they seemed to reside the same distance from that 50-yard line as their opponent. If you're trying to unseat a moderate, swing voters are key. Your best bet is to run as one yourself. But moderates don't beat extremists--extremists do, by motivating their base. Call it Rall's Rule of Ideological Counterbalance. In 1992, Bill Clinton faced an incumbent president who had run as a "kinder and gentler" Republican, a spacey New Age dude who urged Americans to become "a thousand points of light." A values, fiscal and foreign policy moderate, George Bush I raised taxes. He refused his Gulf War generals' entreaties to ignore the U.N. and push on to Baghdad. Though the recession hurt him, Bush hadn't scared or angered independent voters

(they love their alliteration) but his budget launched the Reagan defense build-up of the '80s. Carter enacted the current draft registration system. And, to punish the Soviets for invading Afghanistan, he boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Carter, like Clinton, ran and governed as a centrist Proto-New Democrat. When going up against right-wing Republican incumbents, however, Democrats do better with left-wing challengers. John F. Kennedy, an unabashed "Eastern establishment" liberal, won against an incumbent vice president—Richard Nixon--famous as a rightwing McCarthyite. The unabashedly liberal Franklin D. Roosevelt campaigned against the militantly pro-business Herbert Hoover with the mondo-leftie New Deal. In both cases, voters felt that the political pendulum had swung

WORDONTHESTREET

too far right over the previous eight years; only a liberal Democrat president could correct that imbalance. Reagan's 1980 defeat of Carter (right-winger beats moderate) is the only modern presidential election that doesn't validate the ideological-balance rule. In 1996, however, challenger Bob Dole failed to distance himself from Newt Gingrich's extremist "Republican Revolution" of 1994, came off as a right-winger, and lost to moderate Democrat Clinton. Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis was far more left than the moderate Bush I of '88; Mondale's milquetoast moderation failed to attract sufficient angry liberal voters to counter Ronald Reagan's energized supporters in 1984. Rall's Rule cuts both ways. Right-wing conservative Barry Goldwater might have given FDR a run for his money in 1936 but his hardcore "extremism is no vice" rhetoric spooked voters weighing him against Lyndon Johnson-who was, by 1964 standards, a centrist Southern Democrat. Four years later, Richard Nixon had learned from Goldwater's landslide defeat. During his '60s wilderness years, he recast himself as a moderate Republican, implied that he would end the Vietnam War, and defeated Vice President Humphrey, a moderate Democrat who implied that he wouldn't. As Democrats decide which approach to take against George W. Bush, a right-wing extremist whose agenda makes Barry Goldwater look tame by comparison, they should carefully consider recent history. A moderate nominee like Lieberman might have been a safe bet against Bush's father, but he's extremely unlikely to beat his radical son. (Ted Rall is the author of the graphic travelogue "To Afghanistan and Back," an awardwinning recounting of his experiences covering the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. It is now available in a revised and updated paperback edition containing new material. Ordering information is available at amazon.com.)

Guy catches monster octopus at fishing tournament

A huge, dripping tattooed Hawaiian guy approaches the scale, which is hanging from a tree at Kanaha Beach Park. He's carrying a mask, snorkel, fins and Hawaiian sling in one hand and a mesh bag full of something slimy in the other. He puts down his gear, reaches into the bag and pulls out a big head attached to a swirling mass of tentacles, which seem to greatly prefer the bag to the scale. Then he plops the whole writhing mess onto the scale. "3.2 pounds," calls out the judge. A pretty impressive octopus, sure, but not enough to win. Such was the 16th annual Larry Libres Memorial Fishing and Diving Tournament. Competitors lined up at 8 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 9, to hunt the elusive and delicious tako, known more colloquially as octopus. There were also plenty of families to fish for oama, six to 16-centimeter fish that congregate close to shore. The event was for the whole family, but the tako diving was the real spectacle. Truly a sport of warriors and these guys took it seriously. Everyone had his or her own particular style. Some opted for shorts, sling, mask and flippers.

Others took their cues from Sea Hunt and decked themselves out with full dive gear. Finally the competitors surfaced with their trophies. All the guys gather around the scale, comparing their jellyfish stings. The weigh-ins went until 10:30, but peaked at 9:30 when one guy brought in an enormous tako. The crowd oohed and aahhed as the scale reading went back and forth. It finally stopped 5lb, 10oz-- the tournament's third biggest ever. "I don't really have a secret," said Larry Sueno, the savvy, veteran diver who landed the beast. "I just jump in and swim with everybody. They're kind of elusive, yeah. I just happened to swim over it and there he was. Kanaha is a good spot for tako and tonight we'll go home and cook 'em up." Considering how tako diving is a little advanced, the kids opted for oama fishing. This year, there were plenty of little kids, moms, dads, old ladies, aunties and uncles. They were wading up to their hips in the light surf, some carrying cane poles, others with nets to scoop up the wiggly little oama. "We have three generations of fisherwomen here today," said Claire Takemoto, who ended up placing third. "My mother who is 81, myself, and my daughters. We come from a

The elusive, beautiful, intelligent and delicious(?!) tako fishing family and go fishing together every Sunday. My great-grandfather was an aku fisherman on the big boats. This is our second year participating and last year we had our family reunion here. Right now, my brother and cousin are tako diving." The oama fishing division has two categories: 12 and under and 13 and over. Mitchell Migita, a totally stoked six-year-old, won the 12 and under division with a 15.2 cm monster. Beau Gaddis won the older division with a smaller 14-cm oama. "This is a great event and we had awesome attendance today," said event organizer Kim Ball. "There were 227 divers and 211 fisherman. This is the best event I'm involved with. It's all about sharing the waters and we'll continue to do it in Larry's honor."

The tournament honors Larry Libres, the guy who brokered a truce between windsurfers and tako divers at Kanaha Beach Park. The water 50 to 100 meters of shore is prime tako territory and some of the best windsurfing water in the world. The late Libres, a former principal at Paia School and an avid tako diver who died from a heart attack during a Kanaha dive—negotiated terms between the two camps in 1987 which remain in effect today: No windsurfing before 10 a.m., no diving after. The tournament has celebrated this accord ever since. "Larry was a peacemaker and created this peaceful, respectful event," said his widow Rose Libres. "Everyone in the community is happy about this event and many locals look forward to it every year." MTW

Elvis Lives! Elvis Wade, that is... Call Elvis Wade the anti-Elvis impersonator. Or maybe he's the Elvis anti-impersonator. I forget. In any case, he's not your typical 300-pound, pelvis-quaking, pantsuit-wearing weirdo who loiters outside the gates of Graceland, paying homage to his hero as his plastic sideburns wave in the Memphis wind. "I hate the word Elvis impersonator," said Wade, who also goes by the name Wade Cummins. "I don't get involved with any of those Elvis impersonators. I am not impersonating Elvis. I'm an entertainer, and it's a show - a world class show. It's like going to see Elvis himself. It's just that good." Wade is a professional performer who has his act down, and he takes that act-and himself-seriously. I mean, if you were Wade, would you really want to be coupled with a crazy cult of Elvis copycats? Would you want

your name mentioned in the same sentence as thousands of sequin-studded strangers, one flakier and freakier than the next? "A lot of people are initially turned off to my show because they've seen so many bad Elvis impersonators out there who can't sing, who just hang around Graceland with their glasses and their wigs," said Wade. "What they don't understand is that I was doing Elvis before there was any such thing as impersonators. My show started the whole impersonation movement. I was the first." Considering the sketchiness of the Elvis impersonation historical record, we'll just assume that Wade is, in fact, the original fake Elvis. Wade is also a proud fake Elvis, refusing to attend Elvis conventions or compete in contests or hang around the Las Vegas Strip hocking show tunes for handjobs or even strut

around Safeway shoving fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches down his throat while calling the cashier "little lady." "I'm ranked number one all over the worldin Mexico, Canada, Europe and the U.S.," said Wade. But when I naively asked to see the latest audited rankings, Wade paused. "Look, all those other Elvis shows out there are small time. My show is nothing like that - I play huge arenas to 30, 40 thousand people." Wade does have iron clad credentials. He performed for 12 years with the Jordanaires, Elvis' original back-up group from 1956 to 1970. He also traveled with personal friend Dee Presley, the real Elvis' stepmother. She contacted Wade in 1984 and joined his "Tribute to Elvis" tour, acting as his press agent and front woman for the fans. Of Wade's performances, she once said: "I recommend

his show to truly be the finest tribute to Elvis there is." Even the King himself apparently showed up in Nashville one night during the early 1970s to see Wade. "Elvis was in town doing a recording session and Mama Mae (Maeboren Axton, who wrote Heartbreak Hotel) brought him in to one of my shows," said Wade. "It was a strange thing. I knew he was coming - the word leaked out and people were going crazy. Security roped off an area and brought him in, disguised in a cowboy hat and phony beard." According to Wade, Elvis loved the show. "He gave me a standing ovation," he recalls. "There was no such thing as impersonators back then, and he couldn't believe that I could make a living imitating him." Some years, Wade performs as many as 250

shows. "People think it's a glamorous life, but it can be a grueling," he said. "Sure you get to stay in first class hotels and eat at fancy restaurants, but there's nothing like your own bed and a home-cooked meal. I tell people that the glamour begins and ends on stage. The rest of it is work." But he does like the feeling of being on stage. "It's a fleshly high," said the Born-again Christian who always distinguishes his highs. "Not a spiritual high. Anyone on stage would enjoy the adoration of doing a concert -- feeding off the energy from the audience, generating it back to them. It's an amazing feeling. But it's not at a spiritual level." Wade Cummins is the seventh child of a poor ex-moonshiner, born in Watts Hills, near the town of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. Born into a family of musicians, he started performing when he was eight years old, not long after he saw Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. His teenage sisters had gone gaga for Elvis, and their stack of LPs inspired Wade to do his first impression. Late at night, his uncle would sneak little Wade into the local watering hole, where the 8-year-old would shake his thing to the jukebox. The barflies couldn't get enough. "They would throw dimes and quarters at me, and I realized, hey, this could be a lucrative business. I suddenly became very popular with my friends because I could now afford to buy Popsicles for everyone in the neighborhood." At 13, Wade put his first band together and by the time he was 16, he was already making a name for himself performing in "Vegas-style show rooms" around the country. "I always looked like him, even at 16," said Wade. "People were always calling me Elvis because I was such a spitting image. And I always sang like him too. I've got a four-octave range, and could do Elvis of the ‘50s through the ‘70s. It all came natural." One night in 1968, Wade received a request to perform the hit "One Night With You." As a joke, he poured his Elvis impersonation on thick. "I did all the hip-shakin' and everything, thinking I'd get a laugh," he said. "But they gave me a standing ovation and yelled for more!" His show soon focused on the Elvis Presley image. By age 18, Wade was selling out shows, working many of the same cities where Elvis was performing, selling tickets to those who couldn't get to see the real Elvis. "'Come see the next best thing,' we would tell them," recalled Wade. "And it worked." Today Wade does two-hour shows featuring 22-24 Elvis covers, which Wade says are "a small amount when you consider Elvis recorded hundreds of songs." Wade does all decades, from rockabilly Elvis to Vegas Elvis to Bloated Comeback black-leather Elvis. But his favorite material comes from the Elvis of the ‘50s and early ‘60s songs, like "Teddy Bear," "Don't be Cruel," and "Can't Help Falling in Love With You." "I love his music," said Wade. "It's the best music we've had in our lifetime. He was the cream of the crop, a tremendous talent. And he was mannerly like most kids in the South. People always laughed at his yes sir, yes

ma'am, but I identified with that. That's the way I was raised. He was respectful, had a kind heart and giving attitude. He didn't drink or smoke when he was younger, and never used any foul language in his early years." Unlike many fans, Wade is pretty sure Elvis is dead. "No, he's dead alright," said Wade. "I know his family, and I know for sure he's not alive. But people believe what they want to believe, and that's okay. Elvis is bigger than life." But what about all those Elvis sightings we keep reading about? "Some of those sightings were me!" he said. "One day I was driving back from Florida in a new Lincoln Continental. I stopped in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to get some gas, and sure enough the next day, I read about an Elvis sighting in Murfreesboro." A good memory sure, but the day Elvis died wasn't something Wade likes recalling. He was performing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. "I was on the beach all day and when I got back

to the hotel, I had a million messages from the media," Wade said. "I thought they were calling to interview me on my show, but they wanted to get my reaction to Elvis' death. As soon as I heard that, I went into total shock. I freaked out. I wanted to cancel the show that night. "There were 5,000 people waiting outside to get into my show that night," he recalls. "The audience gave me a standing ovation before I even began - and I knew it wasn't for me, but for Elvis. Women were passing out, screaming, crying, carried away on stretchers. It was eerie, to say the least." Estimates vary on how many impersonators exist, anywhere from 3,000 to 30,000. In any case, Elvis impersonation has been gaining steadily in the last three decades, growing significantly in most western and Asian countries. It's a serious industry. In 2002, Elvis had the number one selling album of any artist - a compilation of 30 #1 hits, selling nine million records worldwide. Just a few weeks ago, he

was on the cover of two magazines and a TV guide. New movies, memorabilia and books continue to be produced with no indication of stopping anytime soon. People travel all over the country and world to visit and revel in the vibes of every site and shrine even remotely related to Elvis. I asked Wade what he thought Elvis would think about all the fuss. "His family said he never took himself seriously," said Wade. "He'd be in shock if he could see the impact he has caused. There is no one in his league. No one will ever match the talent of Elvis Presley." As for his own success, Wade is more modest. "Only 2% of the people are able to make their living in the music industry," he said. "I am very blessed to be part of that 2%." Find out for yourself when Elvis Wade hits the MACC's Castle Theater tonight - August 14 at 7:30 p.m., presenting "Aloha Hawaii Again." Tickets are $33, $27 and $22. NEW HOURS! 11AM-8PM DAILY

Livewire Café's got game. Tons of game, in fact--Scrabble, dominos, checkers, Fact or Crap. Livewire stacks a basket full of games, newspapers and magazines that could keep anyone entertained for hours. It's a good thing because people do stay there for hours, soaking up the caffeine scene. In one corner, a weathered Paia local lounges in one of Livewire's cushy chairs, staring at a computer screen. In another, bandana-clad boys sweat over a stack of Jenga blocks while a spry old-timer sits back and enjoys the show. Upstairs, Internet junkies click away on keyboards. Outside, a lone guitarist strums along while singing poetry. Livewire is mod and breezy and hip enough to appeal to everyone from laptoptoters to bamboo-flute blowers, with plenty of dreadlocks and baseball caps in between. Looking around, it seems everyone sips from oversized mugs, blowing ripples into their mound of warm white foam. That's exactly the environment owner Ben Holz hoped for when he envisioned Livewire three years ago. Holz visited Maui in 2000 but couldn't find a place in Paia to get a latte and go online. He spotted the historic old gas station site where Livewire sits today and put in a permit request. Last December, he opened for business. "I was concerned about fitting into Paia at first, but people really like it," said Holz. "Locals come all the way from Kihei and tell me it's the best coffee on the island." Holz gets his beans only from the best: organic fair trade from Seattle and a local blend from Maui Oma. "I go out of my way to offer high quality coffee, and people do notice," he said. Livewire has your typical lattes, chinos and mochas, and your decidedly atypical ice blends. I ordered the Bender, a green or black chai tea blended with apple

bananas and caramel for $3.75. Tall, smooth and creamy enough to freeze my brain, the Bender also comes coffee-flavored. For those hot-under-the-collar days, Livewire also whips up a basketful of fresh fruit smoothies. The café offers a small food menu alongside some serious gourmet baked goods. There are fresh bagels and breads, to which you can add cream cheese, hummus or smoked salmon. You could also add ham or turkey to make a sandwich for just $4.75 more. They also offer a fruit and Nutella-topped Belgian waffle and a breakfast burrito filled with eggs, potatoes, red peppers and cheese. For dessert, there are spongy squares of banana bread, luscious layers of Tiramisu, chocolate-flowing lava cake and creamy dulce de leche that will push you right to the sugar-coma edge. But most just grab a muffin and head for the nearest terminal. On the second story, Livewire has the hook-up for a dozen machines, all Internet ready. You can go online for $0.15 per minute or $3 for 20 minutes. But this is no library - the café is far more earthy clean. Abstract art lines the walls, tree branches fold over rocks and leather lounge chairs compliment red cherry wood. There's even an outdoor balcony for fresh air and a view. Livewire has just as much personality during the day as at night. They feature live music four times a week, starting at 7 p.m. with John Moore on Saturdays, Molten Soul on Tuesdays, live jazz on Thursdays, and an open mic night on Fridays. "The open mic nights give people an opportunity for people to perform," said Holz. "It can be a zoo here on Fridays." People go to Livewire to either watch the scene or be the scene. Whether you’re going for the music or the Internet or just a damn good cup a’ joe, there’s nothing not to like about Livewire Café. And in the words of my favorite game, that’s fact, not crap. Livewire Café is located at 137 Hana Hwy. in Paia, and you can reach them at 579-6009. MTW

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY JOE GATTO

Two Guitars At Once?! Jimmy Patton does the impossible Some say the Moors invented the guitar in the 1300s. Then there are those who say it's just a derivative of the Russian Balalaika. Still others insist it was the Hungarians. And then there's the group that says shut up, you don't know what you're talking about, the only good thing the Hungarians ever invented was the Rubik's Cube. But I digress. With the exception of the electric guitar and those guitars that are, like, two guitars, the guitar hasn't really changed since whoever the hell invented it invented it. But now, here on little ol' Maui, one man is poised to revolutionize the way we all think of the guitar. His name is Jimmy Patton. He's part of Calima, a San Diego based guitar duo. On Aug. 16, at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in the McCoy Studio Theater, Patton will do the impossible. He will play two guitars at once. "I got the idea from tapping on one guitar, but I eventually felt limited," said

Patton. "Two guitars gives me freedom with both hands and allows the playing of notes in ranges that I couldn't reach with just one guitar." Patton taps the fret of his guitar as if it were a little piano, creating different sounds than normal strumming or plucking methods. He sits Indian style on the floor with the neck of one guitar resting on his right leg, then plays it like a piano. He holds the other one traditionally, tapping the neck, creating a distinct sound. The guitars are not identical, so each one will produce a unique melody. "I'm usually playing two melodies at the same time, which takes tremendous concentration and coordination," said Patton, who denies coming up with the idea of playing two guitars simultaneously after coming across a two-forone sale at Guitar Center. "Classical training helped me a lot, but I mostly had to teach myself how to play two simultaneously, because the style of tapping on two guitars isn't really taught anywhere. Only a handful of people in the world can do it so I don't see it catching on."

Guitarist in the Nation." Calima, his duo with Alejandro Guillen, will appear at the MACC with flautist Louisa West, who also happens to be Patton's newly wedded wife. In fact, they just spent their honeymoon on Kauai. This is the group's second tour of Hawaii, but their first time playing Maui. "Our music is representative of diverse cultures. Influenced by Spanish Flamenco, Bossa Nova, Greek, Middle Eastern, and Indian traditions, it's culturally rich music that will be appreciated by Hawaiians," said guitarist Guillen. Check. But can Guillen play two guitars at once? MTW

What Patton does is completely different from those guys who play those guitars that are, like, two guitars. It's also way cooler. Patton plays both frets simultaneously, with one hand playing different notes. But the guy playing those guitars that are, like, two guitars alternates between the two frets when he wants to hit a certain note. That means he can't hit two distinct notes. But Patton can. And does. Really well, actually. No fooling - guy knows what he's doing. In 2001, Patton beat 3,000 other guitarists and won first place in the nation-wide Guitarmageddon Competition, which won him the right to the title of "Best Unsigned

BY COLE SMITHEY

Cold Leftovers Merchant-Ivory Embarrass French and American Alike Le Divorce (★) "Le Divorce" is a miscalculated attempt by the vastly overrated team of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory ("The Remains of the Day") to adapt Diane Johnson's 1997 novel into a witty cinematic commentary on French and American cultural differences. What Merchant and Ivory achieve is a disconnected series of talky and limp set pieces that catch their actors acting. Kate Hudson is smug as Isabel Walker, a free-spirited American visiting her pregnant poetess sister Roxy (Naomi Watts - "Mulholland Drive") for a prolonged stay in Paris. Roxy's French painter husband Charles-Henri (Melvil Poupaud) abandons her and their young daughter at the beginning of the story to take up with a Russian "slut" and steal ownership of Roxy's heirloom painting by Georges De la Tour through their divorce. The bloated comedy and tragedy that follow seem more like indistinct pencil sketches than an oil painting of any worth. In his "New Biographical Dictionary of Film," David Thompson calls MerchantIvory, "Masterpiece Theater moviemaking: prestigious, well furnished, accurate, prettily cast - and bland, anonymous, and stealthily interchangeable." I like how Thompson's lofty assessment of the team collapses like a house of cards on the words "bland" and "anonymous." Indeed, all of the relationships at play in "Le Divorce" have an undesignated quality to them. It's as if the characters barely know one another, but are pretending to have an association for lack of anything better to do with their liberal amounts of time in Paris. Isabel takes an assistant job with a Susan Sontag type of expatriate writer -played vacuously by Glenn Close -- which allows her to quickly bed both a young artsy hanger-on and a loathsome elder politician, who happens to be uncle to Roxy's husband. Roxy is supposedly a poet, but shows no sings of being motivated by the music of language, much less by the pangs of human existence that would necessitate a poet's patience and temperance. Much is made of Roxy's refusal to give CharlesHenri the divorce that his abandonment and adultery merit because she is apparently so morally superior to him that even the temptation of protecting her family's suddenly marketable painting is beneath her. Forget that Roxy understandably never wants to see Charles-Henri again, because the nutty woman that he has run off with has an equally demented American husband (Mathew Modine) who will, by the film's end, emerge distractedly

Even cutie Kate can’t save this bland film to co-opt a lion's share of the plot for his under-written individuality. "Le Divorce's" visual motif of French exactness implodes in the final seconds of the movie, when a gust from Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amelie" carries Isabel's red crocodile handbag across Parisian rooftops to smooth away brushes with suicide and murder that the film has feebly introduced and swept away. Roxy isn't to be considered mentally unstable for ineptly slitting her wrists while pregnant with child because she is "Californian" after all, and Isabel isn't particularly ethically challenged for sleeping with a fascist politician and an artsy slacker simultaneously because she's, well, Kate Hudson. What matters most is that the Walker family retains ownership of their la Tour painting to auction it off for an enormous sum of money that will allow for their family's return to America where matching sports utility vehicles must surely await. The French here are shown to be cultural elitist interested only in retaining artifacts of their heritage, while the Americans are cheap, insulting and condescending. With cultural ambassadors like James Ivory, Ismail Merchant and George W. Bush, civilization envy will be a cold leftover dish Americans are forced to eat for a long time to come. PG-13 115 mins.

summer tour of a skateboard star from Chicago to Oceanside, CA, pulling tricks and tearing it up, in their wild attempts to get noticed and grab a major sponsor and a chance to become stars themselves. OPEN RANGE - (R) - Western - Following the day-todayencounters of four cattle herders who roam the countryside without owning a particular piece of land, or "freegrazers", living in the final years of the Wild West, this film tells the story of how they eventually team up to rid a burgeoning remote town, Harmonville, from the machinations of a ruthlessly evil rancher, who forms a sort of makes the laws and rules, and enforces them using scare tactics and brute force. Stars Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening. MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Youth Gone Wild Friday, 6-10 p.m. at the Kihei Youth Center [MUSIC] Three bands: Absence of Void, Empty Handed, Gomega If you’ve ever been to a Gomega show, you still may not know what to expect from their next live performance. Oh sure, Kanoa will humbly boggle your mind with his vocal talents and vast musical skill as he whips his way through genre to genre. Their crowds generally are comprised equally of both a loyal following who are looking forward to whatever spontaneous jam the G-boys freak-flow and the people looking awkward and uncomfortable as they try to figure out just what the hell kind of Jawaiian band this is. Guess what, folks? You can’t label Gomega – you can only let go of preconceptions and listen. Last weekend, while feeling incredibly old at an Absence of Void gig, my jaw ostensibly dropped and I had to pick it up off of the dirt before prepubescent moshers mistook it for a hockey puck. The point being here, people, that we have some serious contenders on Maui for fresh new metal meat. Okay, hard rock, punk, emo metal meat. Whatever. They’re just plain good and if an old dinosaur like me can enjoy herself at an AOV show, then so can you. The Kihei Youth Center is hosting this End of Summer blowout that is free to members, $5 for everyone else age 12 and up.

Party for Pancho

Tuesday, 7 p.m. on Akaku Channel 53/Visions TV

Get out your poodle skirts and pompadours and head out to Pancho & Lefty’s to help commemorate their Sweet 16th. There will be a ‘50s/’60s costume contest and surprise 25¢ beers at the golden hour, karaoke and much, much more!

[POLITICAL] Looking for another way to express what’s on your mind in regards to the ever-exciting happenings of the rock? Maui Talks-TV, along with writing an Eh Brah!, is your opportunity to get involved with what’s going down and a forum for you to bitch about what’s not. You can play an interactive part in a live, twice monthly TV talk show hosted by Nikhilananda (pictured) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. It’s fine and dandy to talk about your Maui mishaps with your friends at the bar, but it’s time to make your complaints official and your voice heard. Call in during live tapings and give officials, business owners and the bigwigs of Maui a piece of your mind while only in your underwear at home. This Tuesday night, call 873-3430 (888-577-6240 from Molokai and Lanai) instead of those 800 numbers you usually call. This one’s free. [IAN HOUSTON]

Benefitting Maui’s Youth

picks by Sam Campos

Naked is Funny Wednesday, 5 & 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [FILM] Sometimes movies can surprise you. Sometimes printing the word “naked” will not get you into as much trouble as actually printing a photo of a naked person. “Suddenly Naked” is a very funny film about a subject that I know nothing about: an embittered female writer in her 30’s who becomes charmed by a precocious 20-year-old intern, um, I mean writer. Although this film superficially appears to be a simple romantic comedy (i.e. chick flick), it has enough clever dialogue, biting humor and creative cinematography to keep it entertaining enough for all genres.

LECTURES

SOUTH MAUI

GOMEGA "GOMEGA" Gomega puts on such a good live show and embraces so many musical genres that they could never really be pigeonholed as a one-genre band. They bring together Funk, Ska, Reggae, Punk, Metal, Jazz, HipHop, R & B and Soul. This is especially true of their first CD. You'll find a very Marvin Gaye-esque number only a couple tracks away from a Rap/Metal track called "Story Goes." There are only four bands I know who have done this well: The Clash, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers and now Gomega. Kokone Records (Available at Borders Books and Music)

VARIOUS ARTISTS "FREDDY VS JASON: MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK" Having been a fan of this brand of cinema for some time now, I am not at all surprised that this soundtrack boasts the general theme that it would have had in the eighties’ heyday of slasher films - meaning, heavy metal. So it's a good thing that Roadrunner Records takes up the job of providing the music that these two evil, twisted bastards will undoubtedly pummel each other to, seeing as how they have a band like Slipknot in their corner. This soundtrack goes along that spectrum hard and heavy but for the most part features a slew of tracks that are as yet unreleased. For the collector (i.e. deep-pocketed folks who should be mugged) the soundtrack features three separate covers so you can pick the guy you think will win or if you hope it's a draw. If the movie is even half as fun as the soundtrack, I love it already. - Roadrunner Records

Learn about and restore archeological ruins and native plants. For info, call 572-8085.

Four Seasons Resort Wailea 3900 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 874-8000 Lobby Lounge, Hawaiian music w/Steve Repollo and Alan Villeran, Thu, 5:30-7:30 p.m. followed by jazz w/ Sal Godinez and Marcus Johnson, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; contemporary music w/Clay Mortensen and George Tavoularis, Fri, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; island style trio, Sat and Mon, 5:307:30 p.m. w/ hula dancer 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Pam Peterson and Rudy Baria, Sun, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; Tiffany Lee and Josh Mon and Sat, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; Clay Mortensen and Gilbert Emata, Wed, 8:30-11:30 p.m. Sunset torchlighting nightly. Oh boy. More of this again. Unlike most reviewers I'm not going to reneg on my stance on this band after talking so much crap for a year and a half. There's something subtly pretentious in Chris Carabba's new record. You hear this faint part of his voice that seems to tell you that he could shit an album on your chest and you'd love it. Until you realize that, that's just what he's doing. Hey, more power to him. He's got a legion of fans that will sing his songs for him so it won't matter if he keeps shoveling the same drivel out to you album after album. On this record in particular, though, he at least gives you something different to listen to as he brings out more electric guitars and less emphasis on acoustic, wanker ballads. I just want to slap that James Dean/Luke Perry haircut off his head. - Vagrant Records

VARIOUS ARTISTS “THE NOW SOUND OF BRASIL” One of the most fun and funky groups in Brazil is Bossacucanova, whose suave tune Guanabara--a very catchy piece of funk, with fresh samba drum samples--puts the listener into a chill Rio lounge. The legendary Suba created a unique tapestry, mixing Bossanova with smooth electronica. Cibelle's otherworldly vocals on Suba's tune, Tantos Desejos, enchant, while jazzy horns and characteristically Brazilian percussion give the track a lot of flavor. Bebel Gilberto always impresses and the title track of her fantastic album Tanto Tempo appears as a funky, spaced out, club remix. Backed by a tight jazz ensemble, Celso Fonseco's golden throat shines on his super smooth tune Bom Sinal. – [JOE GATTO] - Six Degrees Records

VARIOUS ARTISTS

Maui Style ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

“AN AFRO-PORTUGUESE ODYSSEY” The Portuguese colonized more of the world than just Brazil and Upcountry Maui. There are several Lusophone countries in Africa where they mix Portuguese and African lyrics, percussion and guitar, and whose gorgeous, upbeat, tropical music is featured on this CD. Master mandolin player Bidinte has taken the music from his native GuineaBissau to new heights, mixing flamenco and beautiful singing on Considjo Di Garandis, an irresistible tune with airy guitar and amazing drumming. Ruy Mingas, from Angola, offers Homenagem A Liceu Vieira Dias, a fantastic song featuring dueling acoustic guitars, congas and a very interesting bamboo scraper called a dikanza. Mendes Brothers, from Cape Verde and Brockton, Mass., have popularized a number of new music styles based on Cape Verdean traditions. Cor di Rosa is a brilliantly arranged, rhythmic tune that recalls the magnificent style of Cesaria Evora. – [JOE GATTO] - Putumayo Records

DAY&NIGHT

A&E

FILM

I spotted a beautiful girl on Wednesday at a local bar. To break the ice, I sent her and her girlfriends a round of drinks. She and I flirted and talked the entire evening, and I got her phone number when she left. Friday afternoon, I left her a message that a bunch of friends and I were meeting at a happy hour Friday after work. I left my cell number so she could call me back. A week has passed, and I still haven't heard from her. This is weird, because she seemed like a great girl, and I was pretty sure we'd really hit it off Wednesday night. What's my next move? --Telephone Silence Dating is the showroom for the relationship. Especially on the first few dates, it's the little things that count -- like whether you use gold cord or red ribbon to tie the engraved dinner invitation on the dove's leg when you send a flock of them through her bedroom window. Although communicating via rent-a-fowl isn't a dating must, it does serve an important function: letting a woman know how much you care. Of course, so does a last-minute phone message informing her of an opportunity to stand next to you in a crowd scene with discount alcoholic beverage service. (At least you didn't drive around looking for her, then yell an invitation out the car window: "Hey, I'm starved and my house is a mess -- how about you come over and mop my floors and make me dinner?") If she isn't on a romantic dinner date with a guy who asked her out last week for this week, she's probably wondering what we're all wondering: Who was that guy buying her and her friends drinks on Wednesday, your stunt double? That guy would surely understand the difference between football and dating: you don't give a "great girl" a two-minute warning, then expect her to come running so you can tackle her. Until you come to understand this, your dating field will fail to resemble the playing field in a fundamental way -- it will not include scoring. Your answering machine hit-and-run maneuver is unlikely to minimize your losses. In fact, you should never leave a recorded message for a woman you don't know very well. But, but...you don't want to get rejected, not to your face. Yes, you do. Because what's worse than being rejected to your face is being rejected not to your face. When that happens, you're never sure whether you really were rejected, or as you'd prefer to believe, you called the wrong number or she dropped her answering machine into the Ganges. Get this girl on the phone and explain that you were so impatient to see her that you kind of screwed up, and you should have asked her out for dinner. Then do it. The idea is to let her know how special she is to you; something you show by putting a little bit more time, effort, and thought into sweeping her off her feet than you would into brushing a fleck of lint off your sweater. For courage, just imagine what you could be telling your grandkids: Grampy went to a bar where he met the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen--smart, funny, and all the trimmins'. Then Grampy called the woman and came off like a huge dorkus, and cheap, too, so she never called him back -- and that's how he got stuck with Grammy!
