LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR WE MISS THE POINT I am writing in response to Ian Houston's feature article, "The Quest for a Newspaper", published in the July 3, 2003 issue of Maui Time Weekly. The piece gives some background into the paper's humble beginnings and rolls through a rousing introduction of the staff. What this group of "top sellers" fails to recognize is that a publication is more than ad space and sales tools; it is an opportunity and a voice. A voice that you can choose to present ideas and individuals, concepts and concerns to the community around you. Or you can choose to not listen, learn and contribute to the place that supports your business. You can choose to sell to the highest bidder, an action that "journalist" Ian Houston ironically congratulates Maui Time on NOT doing. This is the very reason that people take such strong stands against the media. The lack of truth and integrity begins to manifest itself, whether you are a staff journalist at the New York Times or the "Fearless Leader" of a community paper that people have come to believe in. I think it fair to say that this Fearless Leader is more than missing the point. The author compares Maui Time Weekly to established mainland alternative publications that have proven themselves through the use of their "voice" and have exceeded standards you so quickly congratulate yourself on. These companies didn't get the respect and admiration they so diligently have to work for by standing around patting themselves on the back, and I'm sure they don’t appreciate your comparisons. But seeing how you are starved for attention, let me offer you a hearty congratulations on joining one of their tequila drinking groups, I'm sure they are glad you could pay the membership dues to get in the club. What a wasted opportunity to spend several poorly written pages patting yourself on the back publicly for all to see. I'm embar-
rassed for you and your huge staff of classified salespeople. Has it occurred to you that recognition and accolades only carry validity when they come from outside? It’s too bad you have to write about yourself, and tell us how fabulous you are, rather than letting us, the people, decide. I draw the analogy to a music group, writing a pop song telling the world how great they are. Praising themselves over and over. Could you imagine the reaction? And why are they so enamored with themselves? Because they sold the most records, of all things. Remember, Milli Vanilli sold thousands of records too. You've lost another reader, Maui Time. - Signature Not Given The Editor Responds: Okay, you caught us. You’re right, SNG - we just didn’t think anyone would catch us writing a story about ourselves, which is why we put it on the cover. This story was our one chance to tell our new readers (both of them) how we got to this point. We’re proud of our staff and what we’ve done thus far. More importantly, you like Milli Vanilli, too? That is, like, so cool! Milli Vanilli are the best! Did you know the words "Milli Vanilli" are Turkish for "positive energy" and that they were formed in Munich, Germany in 1988? Of course you do, silly! Now I know you must have felt pretty foolish when you realized you wrote that Milli Vanilli "sold thousands of records." You know perfectly well they sold <millions> of albums! What was your favorite? Was it <Girl You Know It's True>? Or <Rob and Fab>? Anyway, good talking with you. Keep in touch! MTW welcomes your input! You tourists or visitors, when you visit someone's home do you stub your butt out on their carpets? So what makes you think Maui is a great big ashtray?!! Guess what, morons? Your fancy convertible comes standard with an ashtray - why don't you use it?! Residents, don't start laughing yet, you guys are even worse!! Yeah, I see you in your Maui cruisers, flicking still lit cigarettes out as you drink your pau hanas on the road! Even the "rich" flick their butts out of their fancy Lexus, BMW's and Mercedes! What?! Can't pay for detailing?!! Buttheads come from all races, all walks of life. We need to pass more "No Smoking" laws in public - we would get rid of pollution, and the biggest litterers on Maui! - Tired of your ugly butts!

It didn't take long for my companions Katy Leahey and Christy Miles to realize that the hand-dryers doubled as verywelcomed body warmers. One visitor, Karen Stewart of Arizona, noted that there wasn't a dispenser for seat covers, paper towels or soap. We all agreed these items were essential, but then again, the restroom was free of sticky clutter. Inspecting the men’s room was a bit trickier, seeing as how we were a team of three women. Miles volunteered to go in first. Standing just outside the door, she shouted "Hello!" There was no reply. Yet she'd only taken a step inside when she noticed some guy's feet ankle-deep in pants. "Women don't do that!" she yelled, safely outside. We all agreed. I decided on a different approach, and walked up to one reasonable-looking guy walking out. "Excuse me, could you please take a picture of a urinal for me?" I asked, with what was probably more than a little trepidation. COLD CALLS Cold Calls catches different perspectives on issues important to our island community. The following interviews were conducted on the spot and interviewees were not given advance notice or preparation time. BY SOPHIA FARIDI
The Olinda Cat Sightings 1. What type of cat is the "big cat"? 2. What do you think it eats? 3. What should you do in case of an encounter? 4. Has it killed anybody? 5. Is it the cat on the MGM logo? even uttering a word. A few moments later he was back with said photo. "Aren't you going to ask me why?" I called out as he walked away. "Uh, no, that's okay," he kind of half-chuckled as he headed to his friends in the parking lot. He walked kind of fast, but that might just have been the cold. The old facilities were barbaric, to say the least. Because the old-style restrooms still exist at the other end of the Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu, we were able to see exactly what the tourists and hikers once dealt with. "The toilets are a scary, bottomless hole to hell," said Miles, understating as usual the sheer horror of the place. Leahey got a bit closer to the truth, observing how, when you sit down inside, "a blast of air like that from a volcano hits you right in the crack." The overwhelming awfulness of the place comes from the fact that the restrooms still utilize the ancient system of solar-powered ventilation. In fact, according to park ranger Katie Meyerhans, park guests often complain about the terrible smell. Once, Meyerhans said she saw a woman vomit shortly after running out of the bathroom. "They are in need of improvement," Meyerhans said. "The composting toilets are based on the trade winds. When the Kona winds blow, the system doesn't work. That is when they stink." With the $10 that the park collects from guests and donations, construction should begin in the fall. But for those who have already seen the promised land at Haleakala, the fall will not come too soon. Research assistance provided by Christy Miles and Katy Leahey. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Largo, Fla., private school principal (and Disney fanatic) Dick Baker, 52, was under pressure in August to resign after revelations by the St. Petersburg Times that he took chosen middle-school-age girls (his "princesses") on dozens of overnighters to the Disney World resort, during which he supplied them with Disney-themed costumes and swimsuits (and wore his own Disney pajamas). One princess made 81 trips. Baker's friends and neighbors, and all the princesses, and most parents, support him, calling a recent police investigation (that was completed without charges) a witch hunt, but enough other people were puzzled by Baker's frequent hugging and tickling of the girls, plus his Disney obsession, to call for his resignation.
URBAN LEGENDS COME TO LIFE According to an Associated Press dispatch, a bolt of lightning struck the steeple at the First Baptist Church in Forest, Ohio, on July 1 (damage: $20,000) just as a guest evangelist was beseeching God for a sign from above.

Police in Westerly, R.I., arrested Robert Brayman, 51, and his disciple Hobart Livingston in July and charged Brayman with commissioning Livingston to build a pipe bomb to kill a woman whom Brayman was stalking. According to police, Livingston believes Brayman has spiritual powers and submits himself nearly totally to Brayman, including having paid Brayman more than $13,000 over a threeyear period for protection of actress Natalie Portman, whom Livingston believes is in danger from creature-implanted eggs that might otherwise hatch without Brayman's

guardianship. Among the exercises Brayman uses to upgrade Livingston's avoidance of evil spirits: having Livingston try to dodge BB's fired by Brayman at a local cemetery.
MAN'S WORLD Australian biologist Mark Elgar, writing in Nature magazine, described the tiny male Zeus bug as having the idyllic, work-free life, with food, transportation (piggy-back) and unlimited sex being eagerly provided by the female Zeus (though Elgar said he is baffled at how the male got so lucky) (July). And Agence FrancePresse reported from Seville, Spain, during a political forum just prior to the national elections, that a female campaign worker shouted to Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar that "you have really nice ones" and "You may be short, but you've got them firmly attached" (May).
UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS A 23-year-old man who opened the passenger door of a pickup truck to urinate (even though the truck was zooming along Houston's Southwest Freeway at the time) fell out and was fatally run over (June). And Sonny Morris El, 32, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a collision that caused the death of a 25-year-old woman, who was sitting in his lap having sex with him while he drove (Monmouth, Ill., June). And driver Michael Lappin, 18, was set for trial after his arrest for fatally hitting another driver after losing control of his car because he was receiving oral sex from a woman as he drove (Green Bay, Wis., June).
ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH Two Harare, Zimbabwe, mortuary workers were charged with renting out corpses to motorists so they could go to the head of gasstation lines, since hearses get preferred treatment. A 30-year-old man was sentenced to probation for entering a funeral home's living nativity scene last Christmas and having sex with one of the sheep (Charleston, W.Va.).

Love Me, I'm (Not Really) A Liberal Liberal Democrats project their desires onto Howard Dean Howard Dean, media-anointed Lord of the Left and Prince Protector of Progressivism, is surfing a tsunami of Democratic discontent that could carry him to the White House. But as Vermonters tell anyone who's willing to listen, the former governor they call "Ho-Ho" is at best a leftie-come-lately. "The Howard Dean you are seeing on the national scene is not the Dean that we saw around here for the last decade. He's moved sharply left," says John McClaughry of the Ethan Allen Institute, a rightie think tank, of Dean's campaign rhetoric. Vermont created proto-gay marriage "civil unions" during Dean's term--but that was the state Supreme Court's doing, not his. Even though Vermont's constitution didn't require him to balance the budget, he was a fierce deficit hawk who vetoed proposed Democratic spending. He sided with ski resort owners over environmentalists. And when big business called, he always picked up the phone. "We would meet privately with him three to four times a year to discuss our issues, and his secretary of commerce would call me once a week just to see how things were going," gushes IBM's John O'Kane. According to Vermonters, Dean is a shrewd operator who saw millions of antiIraq war demonstrators last spring for what they were: untapped Democratic primary voters. A few well-placed verbal broadsides spread his reputation as the only presidential contender willing to go
after Bush while other Democrats remained silent or supported his war. His opportunistic Bush-bashing attracted liberal voters tired of being taken for granted and disgusted by donothing "Republican Lite" Dems. Liberals are driving Dean's come-from-nowhere campaign, but they don't share his take on most issues. "If he gets the nomination, he'll run back to the center and be more mainstream," predicts Republican resort owner Bill Stenger. "He was not a left-wing wacko."
Dean's supporters don't believe what they're told. They hear what they want to believe, and Dean provides the strident vagaries that fuel their self-delusion. "We need to know what the president knew and when he knew it," he spat when Bush got caught lying about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in his State of the Union address. That reference to the 1974 Nixon impeachment hearings affirmed many Democrats' belief that Bush deserves serious punishment
DEAN'S SUPPORTERS DON'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY'RE TOLD. THEY HEAR WHAT THEY WANT TO BELIEVE, AND DEAN PROVIDES THE STRIDENT VAGARIES THAT FUEL THEIR SELF-DELUSION. Even as Joe Lieberman berates Dean for pulling the Democratic Party too far left, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich attacks him from the left, as nothing more than another Clinton--a Democrat in name only. "If someone wants to be a fiscal conservative, a good place to start is the Pentagon budget and he's already taken it off the table," rages Kucinich. (Dean on the military: "I don't think you can cut the defense budget.") "How in the world can you be for peace when you won't touch a Pentagon budget that needs war to expand, that needs war in order to justify itself?"
for lying about Iraq, but will President Dean turn over Bush to the International War Crimes Tribunal? Not bloody likely. And how can antiwar types reconcile Dean's support for Bush's invasion of Afghanistan? Clinton played libbies the same way in 1992. did almost zilch to improve employee rights. But there was nothing that lefties could do. Where could they turn—the Republicans? They'd projected their leftiest hopes and dreams onto their "Democratic" president; no matter how often Clinton betrayed them, they stuck with him. There's plenty of ideological self-delusion to go around. On the Republican side, George W. Bush transformed a $4 trillion federal budget surplus (over 10 years) into a $6 trillion deficit. He created an extravagantly wasteful cabinetlevel bureaucracy, the Department of Homeland Security, whose sole function is the issuance of color-coded press releases. How do fiscal conservatives justify a guy who argues that wasting $10,000,000,000,000 doesn't matter? Political projection. Never mind that Bush is the biggest tax and spender of any nation that has ever existed in human history; in their wacko fantasy world, he's still a "conservative." If elected, Dean says, he plans "to do what Clinton did in 1993. We need to make a genuine effort to start to balance the budget to restore investor confidence. The second thing I would do is to support the small-business community." Some leftie! Like Clinton, he'll clean up the Republican deficit, making it impossible to fund Democratic social programs. He's prodefense and pro-business. He's committed to the environment but he'll likely disappoint liberals on health care, taxes and trade. Dean doesn't lie about his intentions. "I'll govern the same way I did in Vermont," he promises. So he's not the Great Left Hope. But anybody-but-Bush Democrats desperately need a hero, and Dean's elected.

The pro-business Arkansas governor promised to stand up for workers--without naming specifics. Gorgeous girls in bikinis, strapping surfers, free food, good tunes and solid competition was pretty much the order of the day at the North Shore Paddle 2003 at Paia Bay. Not your typical surfing competition, since no one actually surfed, The North Shore Paddle was about, well, paddling. Specifically, paddling 12-foot boards from Ho`okipa to Paia Bay. "I teach surfing and paddling gets people so worn out," said Buzzy Kerbox, the winner of the Paddleboard Division. "They can't believe it until they try it." Out of the four divisions--Surfboard, Lifeguard, Paddleboard and Body Board--the Paddleboard Division carried the most prize money and attracted the biggest names. "Paddleboarding races have been around since the ‘30s and ‘40s and were always part of the surf culture, but their popularity died off for a time and is now making a resurgence," said Kerbox. "It's the perfect way to keep in shape in the summer and the better paddler you are, the better waves you can catch."

Kerbox won the Surfboard Division three times, missed a year, then this year entered the Paddleboard Division, attracted by the $300 prize. "I'm already in my late 40s and I knew I had my work cut out for me," he said. "It's hard when you know the young guys are gunning for you." The Paddleboard Division attracted other big names too, like Dave Kalama. "It's really fun, not much pressure," said Kalama. "It's good competition with the guys I paddle with all year. It's not too serious and carries a lot of bragging rights." Other competitors included the mother/daughter team of Rachel and Maggie Dunn of old school seaside community of San Clemente, California. "It feels good to beat Mom," said Maggie, who beat her 40-year-old mom, making the highlight of their annual one-month stay in Paia. "She needs to paddle a little harder to beat me." "I thought I'd smoke her, but it feels good to be beaten by my daughter," said Rachel. "I'm old already, but Maggie's gonna be good." The fifth annual event comes courtesy of Jud and Kelly Lau of Hana Highway Surf. Kelly Lau also organized a fashion show that featured eyecatching styles from local brands like Chicks With Sticks. Attractive models from Hana Highway Surf slinked down a sand catwalk to show off the latest in beachwear. North Shore Paddle 2003 is an ohana event

that includes the whole community, like the Paia Youth Center. All proceeds benefit the Junior Lifeguard Program and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association. "Jud does a great thing for the community. I just want to support his support of the community," said Kalama. "It's a stoker that he gets anybody who's interested to compete with high end Paddleboarders." "Anybody can do it," said Jud Lau. "It's for the accomplishment and not the competition, so no one walks away feeling like a loser. Parents and kids participate together and it's always fun when the kids beat their parents. We wanted to do something different than the regular surf competitions. Since it is flat in summer, we started the paddling race, but there always seem to be waves on the day of the event." MTW

Soulmates On Love and a Rock Opera Check the personal ads sometime and you'll see that just about everyone is looking for a soul mate. Sure, we're all looking for that special someone to understand us, to celebrate our lives with us, to challenge us in ways that help us grow. You know, Ward and June with more passion; Lucy and Ricky with less pummeling. Do soul mates actually exist? Patricia Watson thinks so. Sort of. "You have to find your own power, your own reason for being, before you can find your soul mate," she says. "And even then, it is up to God." Watson is the writer, composer and star of Soulmates: A Rock Opera. She is a devout Roman Catholic whose faith runs. Her rock opera is largely based on that faith. In the summer of 1986, Watson and her oldest son sat in a German church. Right after the Consecration, Watson says, she got the idea to do a rock opera--a story about love and the music business. Now, 17 years later, Watson's rock opera will premiere on stage this week in the Castle Theater. Soulmates is the story of Jessica, a rising pop music wanna-be played by Watson, struggling to break into the business while appeasing her family. Co-star Joe (played by James Milanesa) is the rock star who has money, fame and a supermodel girlfriend, but lacks emotional feeling. Both characters want love and spiritual enlightenment. Jessica sees a priest, played by wellknown songwriter, singer and poet Rod McKuen (McKuen has written songs for Madonna and Sinatra, among others), who tells her to "dream of you and love together." Joe finds his answer on a retreat with Sister Theresa, played by TV and film star Mary Jo Catlett (remember the maid "Pearl" from Different Strokes? That's her. Ditto Mrs. Puff on Spongebob Squarepants). The opera offers talent from both Maui and the mainland. David Galligan, a former Los Angeles Times theater critic and publicist for Elizabeth

Taylor, Richard Burton and Henry Fonda, directs the opera. The show also features Hawaii recording artists Kelly Covington, Priscilla Basque, Scott Hernandez, Gina Martinelli, Sascha Alexander, and Lono. "We are now 50 people working on this project-the cast, the crew, the band," said Watson. "Every person carries with them their magnificence and their problems, but mostly, their synergy. We are a family, and like a family, if you don't get attached to any little problems, everything works out." Singer/songwriter Scott Hernandez, who plays the "Too American" character in the opera, agrees. "Developing relationships has been the best part about working on this play," he said. "Everyone brings their own sense of spirituality, talent and style to it, and now we're our own circle of soul mates. We burp and fart around each other just like family. "If I was doing this project, I would be in the hospital, loaded up on Xanex through an IV, but [Watson] is skipping right through it. Pure eye and ear candy that will appeal to everyone," he added.
The show is, of course, religious. But Hernandez denies that will alienate viewers. "It's not done sappy or preachy," said Hernandez. "The message is about self-discovery, not religion." Of course, Hernandez says on opening night the cast will be having a little religious celebration of their own. "We've been in hell week, working ten hour days to prepare for the show," he said. "I guarantee on opening night, there will be a serious post-party with a lot of wine. The blood of Jesus himself will be flowing on that night." So what about soul mates? Does Hernandez believe they exist? Does he have one? "Absolutely," he said, though he admitted he's no longer together with his soul mate. "Soul mates are infinite and divine. There's no question when you find yours. There's a light shining, an energy flowing, there are oohs and ahhs and choirs singing in the background." And there's hope for all those imperfect souls out there, too. "You don't necessarily have to find yourself before you can find your soul mate," he said. "Your soul mate can help you find yourself." But what if you have found yourself and still can't find your man? Or woman? Or whatever it is you're looking for? "Go to Henry's," advises Watson. Then again, if you can't find someone at Henry's, she laughs, keep looking. And keep working on yourself. "Instead of 'bring me my soul mate,' we should say, 'make me whole in who I am,'" said Watson. "We don't become the people we really want to be because it's too easy to go to the beach, to go drinking, to have short-term relationships. We're lazy. But if become the best person we can be, maybe it's then that we attract the right mate." So Watson has found her soul mate. Right? "Not yet," she said, but she's in the market. In the market for a soul mate. Enough to put an ad in the paper? "Right now, I'm too busy even think about it," she said. "But maybe after this week, once I become a real rock opera writer/performer, I'll have become the person I am meant to be. I'll have gone from wannabe to living proof. And then, who knows." The good news, she believes, is that just about everybody is looking. "People say they are quite content by themselves, but if you join two different energy forces and put them in a loving, working, harmonious relationship, you suddenly have a force to be reckoned with," she said. "Everyone knows that truth deep down, and everyone yearns for it." As for Soulmates, that truth is put to music. "I don't know anyone who can't relate to love,"

Watson said. "This is a simple love story that happens to be placed in the music business. And the emotions are told through a journey of incredible music. "I know my own search for love, my friends' search for love, my ex's search for love, my children's search for love. In reality, we all want to be able to love deeply-not to be loved, but to love. You just never know when it can happen," she added. So soul mates exist. Yeah. I think. Maybe. You know what? Who cares. Did you ever think that perhaps the soul mate isn't what's important?
That it's the search that leads us to who we really are? I have no idea. But I am going to Henry's. when I walked into Stella Blues Cafe, halfexpecting to roll into some dingy juke joint with “China Cat” tinkling in the background. What I found was nothing like it. Stella Blues is a classy place. Sure they call it casual, but come on. That's casual food with an upscale feel, maybe. Where were the old weathered deadheads, downing dark beers and talking set lists? Where were the longhaired hippie chicks bearing batiks and spinning themselves silly? And where could I find myself a good and greasy grilled cheese sandwich for just $1? Stella Blues Cafe is the result of what happens when hippies grow up. Or, in this case, when hippies grow up and their kids take over. The only thing Grateful Dead about the place is a tie-died menu and a few framed show posters hanging on the walls. Sure, Stella Blues may not be a Dead Head's home-away-from-home, but it is a great place to go. In June, the owners moved the place to a bigger location, one offering a bigger bar and a larger dinner crowd. The new site has a warm ambience at night. The bamboo tables are candle-lit and cast shadows over smooth peach walls. Loud laughter and kitchen clatter echoes over an open ceiling, and pop artist Sade murmurs lover's rock
over the in-house stereo. The menu is expansive and tempting. Owner Kale Boverman says Stella Blues offers a "mosh posh of everything," including steak from Maui Cattle Company, fish caught from Maui boats and locally grown vegetarian dishes. There are small plates, like the Mexicali Shrimp and Mango Wings, and big plates, including everything from pork chops to seafood stew, tofu to meatloaf "like you wish mama had made." They also serve your standard pizza, burgers and pastas. We filled our table with a wide sampling of appetizers and entrees. The coconut shrimp came in two hearty skewers with a side of sweet and sour tang. A canoe of chicken taquitos dipped in fruit salsa was about as lip smacking as fried food can get. For our entrée, we tried Toby's Tofu Tia – seasoned tofu bites with onions, sprouts and a spicy barbecue-flavored sour cream, all blanketed in a wrap and garnished with greens. The wrap was a little wet on the inside, but otherwise light and tasty. Stella Blues offers a stunning dessert tray. Lilokoi cheesecake, macadamia nut fudge chunks, Oreo cookie pies and banana split cakes. Banana split cakes?! Never in my wildest banana split dreams did I imagine the great banana split could come in cake form. But it does, and it's every bit as wonderful as you would think. The desserts look small, but watch out. Our plate of bread pudding was so big and buttery, I wanted to lay my head in it and go night-night. Stella Blues Cafe serves breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. (Sundays until 2 p.m.), lunch from 11-4 p.m., dinner from 5-10 p.m., and pupus until midnight. The restaurant also offers outdoor seating, catering and banquet rentals for up to 30 people. "We've been here for 10 years," said Boverman. "There are not too many restaurants on the island that can say that. We've outlived them all. We're working on a game room in the back with darts, fooze ball and pool tables that should be open by the end of September." Keep in mind that shoes and shirts will be required. All right, that's it. I'm going back on tour. Stella Blues Cafe has relocated! Their new physical address is 1279 South Kihei Rd. and you can call them at 874-3770. MTW

WINE OF THE
WEEK
BY ANTHONY MOORE
Qupe 2000 Bien Nacido Sirah
Kihei
Tuesdays & Saturdays at
MARGARITAS BEACH CANTINA
101 North Kihei Road 879.5275
MAUI
The wine of the week is Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah. Worthy of the Old World style, this wine is dark but not over the top or overpowered with tons overripe fruit. It is well balanced with a bit of earthy aroma and spice. When you taste this wine, it has a texture of an easy drinker. You could pair this wine with a rustic beef stew with tomatoes or a nice hearty grilled steak along with grilled mixed vegetables. Bob Lindquist, the owner and wine maker of Qupe, started making wines in the late 1970s. After leaving a position in a wine store, he met Jim Clendenen at Zaca Mesa winery. That's when Lindquist's real love for wine making began. So much so that today Lindquist and Clendenen are partners. Today, Lindquist has his own place to make wine that he calls a modern stone age winery combining old technique with new world equipment. His passion for the Rhone varietals led him to making a small amount of Syrah. Lindquist also dabbles in other wines such as Marsanne Roussane Viognier and a little Chardonnay. But he still concentrates on his 100% Syrah wines. MTW

Singin' 'Bout The Serial Killers 8mm Overdose carries a heavy metal tune Nobody really knows where we got the term "Heavy Metal." Since the late 1960s, at least on music critic has described this loud, energetic music as sounding much like "pieces of heavy metal falling from the sky." This is a particularly accurate depiction of Oahu's heavy metal band 8mm Overdose. Heavy metal expresses human sentiment and ideas using dark, apocalyptic images. Ironically, Jack Patterson, 8mm Overdose's lead singer and creator, believes his mellow personality and even temper influences his hardcore music writing. "The music is the yin and the yang," he said. Patterson is a happy person who loves life and finds his balance in the music he creates. Yet his real interests - the stuff that feeds the core of his musical catalog-comes from tales of serial killers, the History Channel and movies. "I don't like being ignored," he insists. "Whether they hate it, or love it, they will remember it." In 1993, Patterson formed a fourpiece band called Machine. Never setting out to sing, Patterson failed to find a singer so he took the responsibility himself. Three years later, Robb Graves joined the band playing bass and backup vocals. A couple years later their guitarist quit, leaving the other members with a three-piece musical monstrosity. This is essentially 8mm Overdose today: Jack Patterson (Screaming Monkey) on guitar and vocals; Robb Graves (Subsonic Molester) on bass and back-up vocals; and Kirk Powles (Stick Mutilator) on drums. By 1999, the band's lawyer - incredibly, the band had legal representation urged them to change their name after discovering a heavy band in Europe also named Machine. After what must have

been much discussion, the band re-named themselves 8mm Overdose. The change "upset" a label they had been dealing with in Los Angeles. Insisting that their "integrity" was at stake, the guys decided to become a hardcore "indie" band. "If you want to do it right, you have to do it yourself," said Graves. The following year, 8mm Overdose released their "Harder Than Hardcore" album. Right now they're finishing their latest album "Execution Style" featuring 15 new songs and one cover of the Fear song "I Don't Care About You.". Much to the band's amazement, 8mm Overdose is huge in, of all places, Japan. They've toured Japan three times, including last year. "Japan shows are bad ass," said Graves. "They love our music there. Even though the crowd may not understand the lyrics, they

come out to the shows, get really into it and scream along as best as they can." According to Patterson, they play to particularly large crowds – sometimes in clubs that don't even sell alcohol. 8mm Overdose has also traveled the California coast five times. On one tour, they took a side trip to Arizona, then played with Jason Nustead's (former bass guitarist of Metallica) band Flopsum Jepson. Here on Maui, they played a number of times with Maui's voted #1 hardcore band Khrinj. "Maui shows have always been the best," said Graves. "Maui always respects good music." Patterson agreed. "We almost embrace Maui as our home," he said. Back home in Oahu, 8mm Overdose plays regular monthly gigs to a mostly military crowd. They have about a dozen endorsements lined up, including Ernie Ball, Ampeg, EMG, 3rd Rail Clothing, Pintech electronic

FILM
BY COLE SMITHEY
Nollie 180 kick flip to pretty boy A farewell-to-high-school road trip sets the tone for this juvenile but entertaining skateboard movie that gets all of the current dance moves right with a group of four friends pursuing their dream of becoming pro skateboarders and chasing girls. Young American skateboard culture is shown in all of its crude and goofy glory with a movie that is exactly what it presents itself as, a rollicking celebration of teenage ambition by way of the skateboard. Wild extreme skateboard tricks by pro skateboarders and plenty of sick-humored fun result in this frolicsome movie. Of our four college-aged skateboard slackers, only nerdy Dustin (Adam Brody "The Ring") has any intentions of continuing his education in the halls of higher learning. Pretty boy Eric (Mike Vogel "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre") convinces his wayward buddies Matt (Vince Vieluf "Rat Race") and ladies man Sweet Lou (Joey Kern - "Cabin Fever") to follow their skateboard dream of getting signed to a pro skateboard team by catching up with pro skater Jimmy Wilson's national tour. Lou would rather laze around the group's Chicago suburb preying on its endless stream of local female talent if it weren't for the violent patriarchal attention he's been attracting. Besides, the road trip is predi-
cated on the use of Lou's van, which also doubles as a terrific skateboard obstacle that the boys use to demo their talents in parking lot displays. A big part of the movie's charm is the soft-peddled attention given to the good-humored interaction between the friends, and even in confrontations with their rivals. The guys punch each other, complain about their lack of money and rib each other without ever insulting. "Grind" is as much of a document of current day modes of expression among skateboarders as it is a comedy. And even there, most of the laughs are generated by Vince Vieluf's rubber-mouthed mugging and constant antics of existential self-expression. Vieluf is a natural comic stealing focus even in cameo scenes with Tom Green-as a Rastafarian skate shop owner-or Bob Goldthwait-as a sexually challenged motel owner. Admittedly, director Casey La Scala lets many scenes go on too long, and the film's overall pacing falters in spits of energy, but the movie attains an endearing charm pose from its looseness. It's refreshing to see a slightly amateurish film by a big studio like Warner Brothers, especially when the lighthearted subject of the movie is the often-repressed desire of young people to commit to a difficult goal. "Grind" comes to life primarily in its extreme skating sequences that go from fantastic parking lot tricks to skatepark competitions filled with avid fans of the sport. In a nod to the underground movement of pool riders, there's a swimming pool sequence that requires the boys to do some serious cleaning before they can revel in the glory of carving tile and catching air. There's also plenty of vert skating and pipe riding to whet the appetite of any fan of the sport. The road trip climaxes at an extreme skating competition on the beach in Santa Monica. Rad dudes and hot chicks abound as Eric calls the bluff of a white ghetto-fabulous sh*t talker to pull off tricks on the half-pipe that most skaters can only dream of executing. Professional vert skating champions like Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist and Pierre Luc Gagnon do the jaw-dropping stunt double work that makes the actors look better than their actual skateboard talents would allow. Jennifer Morrison ("Urban Legends") does the heavy lifting as sexy skateboard chick Jamie, who takes a romantic shine to Eric and put a cherry on the movie's feel-good ending. Rated 100 mins. PG-13 MTW

It just so happens that this highly esteemed art center is ready to drop their brushes for a moment and notice you, too! They’re having an end of summer celebration with a hodgepodge of entertainment featuring live music by Gypsy Pacific, Gail Swanson, Tom Cherry Band, Zac Kekona and Vince Esquire. There will be puppet shows, a costume contest, keiki games and skits, and a martial arts demo. Of course, there’s also arts and crafts, a ceramics seconds sale, food booths and an open house for the Arts’ studios. And if all that isn’t enough, this event is free and you may even get the chance to win a helicopter trip for two. Not only that, but this event is also celebrating the work that Hui No’eau is doing with their Children’s Scholarship and Summer Arts Camp programs. Whew! Okay, that’s all.

Porn and Metal Friday at Kahului Ale House; Saturday at Casanova [MUSIC] Visit 8mm Overdose’s website and you will discover several enigmatic references the hardcore metal band makes to the porn film industry. What does this mean exactly? Are they writing the soundtracks to Buffy the Vampire Layer and The Good, The Bad and The Horny? Are or they starring in Good Will Humping and The Pizzaboy Always Rings Twice? I’m confused. But maybe this weekend, when 8mm Overdose plays with Entity at Kahului Ale House on Friday and Casanova on Saturday, we can ask them. There will also be lots of wild wahine on hand to strut their stuff in the name of the magic Satan syrup they call Jägermeister, in what is sure to be a wise career step to run for the governor of California in the next election. [Note to Khrinj fans: Khrinj will not be playing these shows this weekend due to a monstrous mishap with Hans’ middle finger. Sorry]

Go Green! Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon at Maui Botanical Gardens across from the War Memorial Stadium If you’re like me, hapless worker that doesn’t see the light of day most of the time, then it might be a good idea to bring to your home some of the tropical beauty most people get to see out and about on the island. Maui Botanical Gardens is kind enough to help you with this idea as they procure Maui’s largest native plant sale ever. Not your garden-variety house ferns, they will offer some of Hawaii’s rare and endangered plants, and a large selection of drought tolerant flowering native trees, taro and breadfruit that you can utilize outside in your own private Garden of Eden. Any Adam and Eve role-playing you choose to do in your garden should remain private as well, of course.
Beat Lounge Friday, 9:45 p.m. at Casanova [MUSIC] DJ Boomshot can rock the beat like nobody’s business and I guarantee he will prove it this weekend at the DJ-friendliest venue in Maui, Casanova. He even got my girlfriend to do the worm in the middle of the dance floor last week at Bocalino’s - and she usually reserves that move for private affairs. That’s how smooth he is.

He is the author of "In Search of the Medicine Buddha", a “journey filled with the wonders of discovering ancient herbal heritages, the tragedy of their loss in the face of environmental destruction and social upheaval, and the hope these medicines hold for our world.” The floors are hard at Maui Yoga Shala, so you can start this “healing arts process” by bringing a cushion for your bottom!

KHRINJ "DEFENSE MECHANISM" Every time I hear Khrinj, I'm reminded of why I got into bands like Pantera, Napalm Death and Slayer when I was still in high school. I run in different circles these days but that doesn't mean I don't still get a kick out of Khrinj. Equal parts fierce and thundering and dark and delicate, Khrinj delivers heavy rhythm with sweeping melody. Everything from Hans' six-armed drums to John's eerie guitar work to Ian's thundering bass to the ear-splitting voice that the meager-sized Cayce pulls out on each and every song rocks. -Pepeiao Productions (CD available at Request Music and Borders Books and Music) [GANNON GILMORE]
RANCID "INDESTRUCTIBLE" Rancid is our generation's Clash. They're probably the last truly great, genuine punk rock band. After putting out a musically diverse record ("Life Won't Wait") and the furious barrage of blistering hardcore/punk tunes of their second self-titled record, the band has gone back to their core sound. It's probably the most beautiful punk record you'll hear this year. "Indestructible" delves into reggae rhythms, rockabilly tempos and the "1,2,3,4" energy of pure and simple punk rock. There is so much heart and soul in this band that even their flaws are like little love notes to their fans. -Epitaph/Hellcat Records [GANNON GILMORE]

As Perry Farrell kicks in with a heartfelt “Here we go!” on the first track, you can only hope for the best. Oh, they’re definitely back – this is no Porno For Pyros continuation. This CD that reunited our long-lost trip rock heroes is, indeed, "fast, hard and to the point" says original Jane’s drummer Stephen Perkins. Maintaining their signature raw rock style, yet with superslick production, Jane’s Addiction musically have evolved into a matured version of their former selves, with members more inclined to raising families with Carmen Electra than dabbling in the drugs and debauchery of their earlier days - and you can hear that! Old fans will appreciate Jane’s true-to-form comeback, and the newer generation should hopefully be able to differentiate between these innovators of the alt rock genre and all the nu metal pop on the airwaves these days. Hopefully. - Capitol Records [SAM CAMPOS]
BLACK EYED PEAS “THE NEW ALBUM” Funky fresh and infectious, this dance oriented hip-hop hits you right in your party bouncin’ boo-tay with songs like “Let’s Get Retarded” and “Hey Mama”. The Black Eyed Peas mix their rhymes up with a little dancehall, a little Latin flair, a little Papa Roach, and a little JT (yeah, that’s right – Justin Timberlake). My favorite song, though, is a tough, female-fronted ditty called “Shut Up”, which takes a trite snap and makes it mellifluous – in other words, it makes bein’ bitchy much more melodic. And in “Sexy”, they sample in some Antonio Carlos Jobim (“How Insensitive”) with the Kinks (“You Really Got Me”). The sweet and simple funk of “The Boogie That Be” makes you wanna shake that thang all night long. And, of course, “Where Is The Love” is a smooth, head-boppin’ anthem that is not easy to hate even after much radio and video overplay. - Interscope Records [SAM CAMPOS]

“CONTRADITÓRIO” It's amazing how amazing DJs keep coming out of all parts of Brazil. DJ Dolores from Recife is one of the most inventive. Her unique creations combine traditional rhythms from Brazil's Northeast with innovative sounds that cause the hips to shake uncontrollably. Catimbó gives a little sample of all of those crazy Brazilian percussion instruments. Sentado Na Beira Do Rio is a mellow dub with wawa guitar and deep bass. Subúrbio Soul is chill and jazzy with some dope scratching, intriguing recordings of street life and a sweet flute. Adorela revs the party back up and Nordestina celebrates the Recife samba, party vibe while adding spacey sounds to the traditional. - Stern's Music [JOE GATTO]

CONNECT THE SPOTS Nine months ago, I started secretly dating an out-of-town coworker, only seeing him when business brought him to the city. Company rumors pegged him as a big player, so I wasn't surprised when he said he'd just come out of a relationship, and only wanted a casual fling. Having just ended a relationship myself, this sounded ideal. We kept it light and fun. When months went by between his visits, I wrote him off with no hard feelings. But, when work brought him back, something had changed. We spent hours just talking. He started calling me constantly. He sent me a plane ticket, and I visited him. He says he's falling in love with me, but rumors about him persist. Even his driver told me what a womanizer he is: on the phone telling one girl how much he misses her, then saying the same thing to the next girl on the line. I don't want to get hurt, but I'm falling for him. If he is a player (and I gave him a "no strings attached" fling) why would he pursue a real relationship? Am I naive to proceed? --Play It Again There comes a time in a player's life when the existential emptiness of meaningless sex with a different woman every night leaves him longing for more. That's generally when the player expresses special feelings for one particular woman, hoping to make a more profound connection with another human being -- while continuing to sneak out for the existential emptiness of meaningless sex with lots of other human beings. Just because a player's found love doesn't mean he's going to stop looking for it. Perhaps that's why there's an aspiring Annette Bening in every woman. Bening is more than a movie star -- she's the woman who turned Warren Beatty into Ward Cleaver. It's the ultimate female ego-polisher, to be the one who had what it took to tame the beast. The truth is, there's no woman fabulous enough. Only the beast can tame the beast. Maybe he grows weary of sales-pitching a different "what's her name" into bed every night. Maybe age puts a muzzle on his screaming hormones. Eventually, he might start wanting a relationship enough to stop living according to the principle "if it moves, is female and under 75, try to have sex with it." Of course, he could also be one of those guys who wants it all -- a wife and a revolving harem -- plus the luck and skill to maintain it all without getting chopped into little pieces in divorce court. Remember, the road to this guy's bed is paved with good intentions, all of which probably sounded sincere at the time. Sure, there's a chance he'll keep his pants on -- and an even better chance if you Krazy Glue his zipper. In other words, if you can't live with infidelity, you're contemplating a life with the wrong guy. Forget telling him how you feel. It's a player's job to tell you what you want to hear. Nothing he says proves he's boyfriend material; only that you slipped past his finely honed psychological defenses, probably by not putting up an offense. The way you play this, if you're willing to take your chances, is absolutely expectationfree. If visions of diamonds and forever dance before your eyes, inform them that your establishment doesn't have a cabaret license just yet. Should you apply for one? Time will tell. In fact, a year down the road, it should be very clear -whether this was the summer the leopard changed his spots, or whether he just got really, really tan.

CLASSIFIEDS
ARIES: Swim as much as you can while the waters warm. Mars will reach its closest point to earth in over 50,000 years. Ask yourself about actions you've taken in secret. Your karma with aggression and assertiveness can affect your health both positively and negatively. TAURUS: The new moon on Wednesday corresponds with Mars at its closest proximity to earth. Your need to venture into free spaces and creative projects is emphasized. Your loving nature and heartfelt interests are aroused. GEMINI: You need to face your past in order to have a better future. Your parents or at least one of your ancestors wished and worked to make a better life for you. You can do something totally new at work while honoring those that came before you. CANCER: The weekend is dominated by the sweet vibes of the Cancer moon. Being with family, working in the kitchen, and feeling sensitive are popular responses. The new moon in Virgo will challenge and enhance your mobility and communication skills. LEO: After the party comes the hangover. When the luau is done, the clean up needs to begin. The new moon has you confronting your material values. Be patient with your debtors and creditors. Make whatever improvements are needed. VIRGO: Happy Birthdays! Activities need to be shared. Mars and Uranus oppose August-born Virgo's sun. A certain amount of pressure will get you to move in a new direction. The new moon brings a sense of adventure and newness. LIBRA: Choices of a spiritual nature lay before you. Meditate and pray for the perfect vision. You'll need to keep a dream journal. The new moon has you working hard. You feel somewhat out of touch or in exile. Be a friend if you need a friend. SCORPIO: It's time to make good use of the people around you. Career pressures will begin to fall by the wayside. You'll be able to respond to invitations or plan a party yourself. The new moon teaches us that freedom needs to be shared. SAGITTARIUS: The new moon pushes all your career buttons. You're a reluctant but fair leader. Responsibilities at times can be ego crushing. A good sense of humor at home will help when things get emotionally explosive. CAPRICORN: Fortify yourself with knowledge. Eliminate fear from your vocabulary. Risktaking behavior will be hard to avoid. You're luckier than usual - at least lucky enough to be on par with your partners. Escape to a beautiful location, perhaps your neighbor’s place. AQUARIUS: The twilight zone of what consists in spiritual and sexual encounters begins to blur and intermingle. You're torn between money and honey. If you're not getting enough love, then you're more likely to eat too much. PISCES: Your inner drive is about to be filled with supersonic jet fuel. Be careful not to get into people’s face. You're ready and ripe for love and lust. The drunk clashes with the twelve-stepper. A little bit of temperance would do us all some good. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Elvis Costello 8/25/54, Gene Simmons 8/25/49, Howard Zinn 8/24/22, Queen Noor 8/23/51 kozmickev@sunset.net
