LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR PROTECTION FROM PORN

COUNCIL GOES BANG-BANG?

This letter is in response to the Cold Calls regarding porn filters on public computers [July 3]. Until I read that issue, I really had no idea that these porn filters raised such problems and threatened any rights. After carefully reading through the responses of Cora Eggerman, Vanessa Chong, and the local youth organization representation, I have come up with this response: Since the very beginning, the porn filters’ main purpose is to protect children from any obscenity and negativity they might view from the Internet. There should be no reason whatsoever to remove porn filters from any public computer. I do not see why it would be such a problem for an adult patron to simply ask the librarian to turn off the filter for his time on the computer. What is so hard about librarians informing their patrons of this privilege? If the filter limits a child’s search on a certain topic, it’s okay. The public library should be the second place for a student to do research - the school library being the first resource. If again there is a lack of information there, then maybe the department of education should consider making changes to their budget and funding - but that, of course, is a different story. We should recognize porn filters as a protection barrier for the younger members of the community rather than, "another barrier making it harder to exercise our first amendment rights." I see this as a total act of selfishness. As a 17-year-old, it hurts me to see that grown-ups today are working against the development of us children - we are the future. - Name Withheld By Request

In the past 6 months, I have noticed that one department of Maui’s administration really seems to be involved in our community. The Sports & Entertainment Development Office banner is at every community event. Johnny Jackson of this office has the community's best interest at heart. Sporting events, community events - Johnny is trying to help. Then I found out, the council cut his budget to ZERO. What gives? Many people think Johnny only does boxing. How wrong you are, Council. He helps fundraise and gets volunteers to help. He may be the hardest working person in this administration. Any event on Maui, he is there. Johnny is the type of person we need in county government. Yes, many of his ways seem abrasive, but there is not a nicer person I know. That is why we are forming an explanatory committee (friends of Johnny Bang-Bang) to get Johnny to run for County Council next year. We need someone who has our community's best interest at heart and Johnny is that person. If you want to have someone on our county council who is really one of us, please call 879-0007 to get involved. - Bernadine Fernandez

Cranky Old Man

LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR

DISCUSSES THE PROBLEM AT KAMEHAMEHA... Who’s discriminating against whom? Hasn't the White Man taken enough from the Hawaiian? The white man has taken his land, his culture, and his existence and relegated him to second class citizenry. He has taken everything from the Native Americans and every indigenous people he has come in contact with. He has imposed the privatization of Real Estate, and now Realtors sell off the land to the highest bidder. Thievery at its lowest level protected by the Law of the Land and enforced by the Supreme Court. And now we have another example of Colonialism. This time in a little White Boy who is being rewarded for lying. I guess he's following in the footsteps of the President of the United States of America. White men were hunting down the Red man and stealing his land, all the while

thumping the Bible and sounding the War cry, “These are soulless savages and no different than Animals.” We imported Black men from Africa to be used as Slaves, and let me remind you that Blacks could not vote until 1965. Discrimination has been the criteria for relationships of all peoples of this land if you weren’t White and Christian. Discrimination was part of the education system, so it is no mystery that Whites have enjoyed the best of the "Great Society". If the Public Education system hadn’t fallen into ruin because of neglect... If our teachers were paid what they are truly worth and if Education was a priority in the Great Society instead of Bombs and filling the till of Corporate America... If the same kind of care were taken in cultivating the most valuable resource we have, our Children, was a priority... We wouldn’t be having this problem at Kamehameha. If there was ever an indication of the failure of our present education system, this is it. The Bishop Estate is wealthy and can afford to give this small population of Hawaii children the best it can. But the wealth of the Bishop Estate is a "pauper" compared to the wealth of the United States of America. The shame is our Schools should be on the same level as Kamehameha. To cry discrimination in light of all that Hawaiians have endured and now this, on top of all the humiliation Hawaiians have endured for the last 100 years, is disgraceful. So, what we have here is another example of White Man’s Law, superceding all that is Humanitarian and a violation of all that is Right. Maybe I'm too idealistic, after all, the U.S. broke every Treaty ever entered upon with the Native Americans. Maybe it’s true "everything" is never enough. - Marcus Ramirez, Makawao

LEAD STORIES As straphanger Joyce M. Judge, 42, stared out the window of the Boston subway car during morning rush hour on July 30, she started dripping profusely, and a minute or so later, a baby fell out from underneath her skirt and slid around on the car's floor. According to witnesses (some of whom vomited at the sight), Judge at first acted as if nothing had happened, then finally picked up her newborn, declined the help of passengers, nonchalantly continued the ride, and left the train at the next station (stopping only to pick up the placenta when it fell to the ground). She subsequently reported to Boston Medical Center, where the baby was in good condition (and where the mother was referred for a mental health evaluation).

CAN'T POSSIBLY BE TRUE The Latest Results From America's Pre-eminent Lawyer Enrichment Program (class-action lawsuits): (1) In a $350 million settlement between AT&T and customers overcharged on telephone leases, lawyers get $84 million, and customers get back $15 to $20 each (December). (2) In a recent settlement between Sears and customers with improperly done wheel balancing, lawyers get $2.45 million, and customers get $2.50 a tire. (3) In a $3.7 million settlement between televangelist Jim Bakker's Praise the Lord Ministries and 165,000 defrauded Christians, lawyers get $2.5 million, and each victim gets $6.54 (July). (4) In a settlement of price-fixing charges against cosmetics manufacturers and retailers, lawyers get $24 million, and each customer gets a free cosmetic (July).

A ROUGH SUMMER FOR WEIRD INDIA (1) Doctors at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital reported that black ants were crawling out of the left eye of an 11-year-old boy (June). (2) Six members of a family hanged themselves on a hillside near Tirupati, but the bodies were not discovered until the odor wafted into a nearby village (July). (3) After doctors in Angara found 15 students unconscious following a lightning strike, they covered the bodies in cow dung as per a traditional remedy; 13 recovered within a few hours (but not even cow dung could save the other two). (4) Doctors at Burdwan originally diagnosed parasitic flies emerging from the penis of a 13-year-old boy while he urinated, but doctors at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata disputed that (June).

RECURRING THEMES (1) Most recent mother to fall asleep next to her infant child and accidental-

(2) Latest convicted slum landlord to be sentenced (90 days) to live in her own dilapidated, roach-and-rodent-haven apartments: Sandra O'Neale (Los Angeles, July). (3) Latest enrollment figures in Florida's statewide program allowing high school students to take physical education courses by computer: 614. (Administrators say they can detect any student cheating; critics don't think so.)

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS The Salon Mexico restaurant in New York City introduced a $45 burrito in July, with a filling of filet mignon and truffles. And the founder of Paul Mitchell salon products recently launched John Paul Pets (shampoos for dogs), joining Estee Lauder's Origins line in the so-faruncrowded upscale pet hair-care field. And a June runway show at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo featured eight dogs modeling fashions such as a yellow dog raincoat (US$72) and a wedding dress and matching hat for dogs.

LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE A July Associated Press dispatch from Jerusalem reported that a 32-year-old woman accidentally swallowed a cockroach and then, after trying to dig it out with a fork, swallowed the fork. Dr. Nikola Adid of the Poria Hospital in Tiberias, Israel, had to remove both items.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Brian Kline, 10, playing with his father's old handcuffs (Dad used to be a security agent) on Father's Day, lovingly cuffed himself to dad William Kline Jr., 33, but the key was lost, and William called police (in Des Moines, Iowa) to get the cuffs off. As is routine, police ran Kline through their database, found two arrest warrants outstanding, and re-cuffed Kline for real. And in Tulsa, Okla., in July, suspected shoplifter Jacob Wise, 18, had cleverly removed security tags from clothes he was allegedly walking out of a store with, but the alarm went off anyway because he had merely put the removed tags in his pocket.

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH A van and an SUV, both transporting undocumented aliens, collided, injuring 28 (Blythe, Calif.). A woman saved her drowning daughter in a backyard pool by mouthto-mouth resuscitation, which she said she couldn't have performed if she hadn't seen it on "Baywatch" (Brooklyn, N.Y.). A 37year-old man, having reported to a hospital emergency room with a knife penetrating his brain, waited, conscious, for six hours while doctors planned the complicated surgery (which was successful) (Wellington, New Zealand).

No Ethics? No Experience? No Problem! The Tawdry Tale of WorldCom's Sweetheart Deal in Iraq WorldCom Inc., recently and hilariously accused of rerouting phone calls to avoid paying connection fees to other phone companies (who was running the joint, frat dudes?), ranks with Enron in the annals of modern corporate debauchery. After an $11 billion accounting scandal sunk the infamous telecommunications conglomerate into bankruptcy, the U.S. General Services Administration banned federal agencies from doing business with WorldCom. So how is a proscribed "company that has demonstrated a flagrant lack of ethics"--the words belong to Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), chairperson of the Senate's Governmental Affairs Committee--poised to land a $900 million Pentagon contract to build a cell phone system for occupied Iraq? "I was curious about it, because the last time I looked, MCI has never built out a wireless network," comments Len Lauer of Sprint. Indeed, WorldCom's MCI division never figured out how to build a cell network in the U.S., and ultimately gave up trying. But who needs experience when you have tasty political connections? Before 2000 WorldCom donated equally to Democrats and Republicans in order to land cell service contracts with U.S. occupation armies in Haiti, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Now it's leveraging a $45 million deal with the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) into a Halliburtonesque sweetheart contract to build the first national mobile phone network in Iraq, where more than 2 million new customers are expected to sign up right away.

The Pentagon's rush to protect WorldCom from a scrappy Bahraini-based competitor, Batelco, which has built cell networks in the Middle East, has exposed yet another unholy alliance between corporate America and the Bush Administration. Demonstrating the brand of lightening-quick entrepreneurship traditionally treasured by free-market-loving Americans, Batelco raced into Iraq after the U.S. invasion and installed cell towers throughout Baghdad. With half of landlines

Ordinary Iraqis, meanwhile, are back in the pre-Alexander Graham Bell era. Companies like Vodafone, T-Mobile and NTT DoCoMo of Japan all have more experience (than MCI) of "setting up green field operations in developing countries," says Godell. He adds that the Bush Administration's decision not to seek competitive bids "confirms the worst suspicions" of European cellular companies. Fortunately for them, being American means never having to

DEMONSTRATING THE BRAND OF LIGHTENING-QUICK ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRADITIONALLY TREASURED BY FREE-MARKET-LOVING AMERICANS, BATELCO RACED INTO IRAQ AFTER THE U.S. INVASION AND INSTALLED CELL TOWERS THROUGHOUT BAGHDAD. out of service and Saddam's 1990 plan to build cell towers stymied by U.N. trade sanctions, Baghdadis welcomed the new service. But the CPA shut down Batelco and threatened to confiscate its $5 million of equipment. Now the CPA is now prohibiting companies more than 10 percent owned by foreign governments from bidding on civilian cell business in U.S.-occupied Iraq. That eliminates Batelco and most other Middle East-based telecommunications companies and, according to analyst Lars Godell of Forrester Research in Amsterdam, leaves MCI with "a head start."

say you're sorry. Old-fashioned influence-buying, coupled with inside-the-Beltway cronyism, is MCI's not-so-secret weapon in the fight over Iraqi spoils. As recently as June 2002, a week before the big accounting scandal broke, The Washington Post reported that WorldCom contributed $100,000 to a GOP fundraising gala featuring Bush--"enough to be listed on the program as a vice chairman of the event." Before becoming attorney general, John Ashcroft cashed a $10,000 WorldCom check for his losing Senate race. And the University of

WORDONTHESTREET If you could start your own charity, what would it be?

Mississippi's Trent Lott Leadership Institute, named for the racist GOP Senator, received $1 million from WorldCom. With Republicans controlling Congress, the Supreme Court and the White House, WorldCom no longer needs to be an equal-opportunity corrupter. WorldCom's rivals, furious at being cut out of Iraq, are lashing out. "We don't understand why MCI would be awarded this business given its status as having committed the largest corporate fraud in history," says AT&T spokesman Jim McGann. "There are many qualified, financially stable companies that could have been awarded that business, including us." Motorola's Norm Sandler, noted that the Iraq gig had never been offered for competitive bidding: "We were not aware of it until it showed up in some news reports." Perhaps MCI-WorldCom will overcome its lack of experience, $5.5 billion in post-bankruptcy debt and an extensive criminal record in order to provide the people of occupied Iraq with affordable, crystal-clear cellphone service that never drops calls or loses voicemail for hours at a time. But sleazy backroom deals with Halliburton and MCI-WorldCom belie America's supposed faith in the transparency of free markets and their relationship to spreading democracy. They do more damage to our tattered relationship with the people of Iraq than any suicide bomb. And they prove beyond a reasonable doubt that George W. Bush's commitment to fight corporate fraud is just another lie. (Ted Rall is the author of the graphic travelogue "To Afghanistan and Back," an awardwinning recounting of his experiences covering the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. It is now available in a revised and updated paperback edition containing new material. Ordering information is available at amazon.com.)

I would start an ADD foundation. There would be free jet skiing, parasailing, and surf rentals for people and kids who have ADD. It would entertain people all day long who have ADD like me.

As expensive as housing is getting, I would make a charity that would help people buy homes on the island.

SURF&SPORTS

BY CHRIS STANKIS

Longboard Legends No Ka Oi Hawaiian Longboard Federation surf contest Few surfers in the world have a better grasp of the traditional than Rabbit Kekai, one of the sport’s “living legends”. But don’t place Rabbit among the relics, he has been an innovator, too. He is one of the originators of the “hot dog” style. “All the guys were just going straight down the line. I was behind them hot dogging!” he exclaims, the joy and irreverence of youth shining through in his voice. Kekai began surfing in the late 1920’s at the young age of five. Since then he has traveled the world (and continues to travel now), surfing and spreading aloha to all corners of the globe. Rabbit is referred to by Fred Hemmings as “the surfer who has won more contests than anyone else in the world.” At the Lahaina event, he was holding court under the contest tent, passing out words of wisdom, sly jokes and good vibes to everyone in earshot. And he was surfing, too, despite a painful knee injury. “The doctors want to put a pin in my knee, keep me on crutches for two years. I say to them (raising his middle finger) ‘I’ll take the pain.’”

Rabbit is also a mentor to the up and coming surfers. This is his way of giving back to the sport. His mentor, Duke Kahanamoku urged him to take what he had, and pass it on. “This was the Duke’s way, spreading aloha.” Rabbit made sure that the younger competitors had checked in before their heat, sometimes calling their names repeatedly on the bull horn, and even heading out into the grass behind the breakwall in Lahaina to track someone down, minutes before their heat, give them their colored jersey and hustle them into the water. All part of his giving back to the sport and the lifestyle that have given him so much.

Light winds, few clouds and sunny skies make great surf contest weather. If the surf cooperates….. The set waves that did push through the Lahaina harbor during the Steinlager/Local Motion No Ka Oi Hawaiian Longboard Federation surf contest last Saturday were good. The sets however were inconsistent. Long periods of time with no waves were punctuated with competitors scrambling to make the most of the set waves. Catching the set waves was the difference in making the cut into the finals, and heading home early. This event was the fourth stop in the five-event Steinlager/HLF series, and the only stop on Maui. The local competitors liked the change, as they got to surf on “home turf”, while the Oahu contingent had to play the role of traveling surfer. “The contests are usually dominated by the Oahu guys,” said one Maui based competitor. “This time there are more Maui guys making the finals.” In some divisions it was equally split, three Maui surfers, three Oahu surfers in the final heats. With points towards the overall series standings on the line, as well as an assortment of prizes

for the finalists, everyone was surfing their hearts out. Making the most of the inconsistent waves saw surfers blending styles, traditional and modern. A typical wave might include an off-the-lip modern move early in the wave, with the rider racing forward on the board later on the wave to nose ride, a more traditional move. EH BRAH! Your tales from the road Mr. Hemorrhoid I was having a fine morning at the Paia Minit Mart with my microwaved breakfast burrito and instant cappuccino to go. That is, until your pukegreen Ford pick-up truck almost ran me down in the parking lot. You didn't even seem to notice when I was forced to flee out of your way and practically choked on my sippie straw. Who do you think you are, some lone cowboy who owns the unchartered territories of convenience stores? I know you must have been in a big hurry to buy yourself that bottle of hemorrhoid salve, because you obviously had something up your ass. Get over yourself and your road-hog truck too. - Where have all the cowboys gone?

Do You Know Left From Right? We finally have four lane highways in some areas - Kihei/Wailea, Kaanapali - and these retards are driving slowly in the passing lane. I’ve seen the tide move faster. Has anyone read his or her drivers' manual? You know, that pretty little book with the 1950s pictures of road signs and

funny overhead views of cars making left turns? "Slow moving traffic keep right." The RIGHT, you fools! – no, not that right, your other right. As I'm driving to work, I am so sick of having to pass in the right-hand lane, while having these clueless people behind the wheel with their finger up their butt. As far as I'm concerned, it's these types of idiots that cause accidents. Drivers, wake up and be more aware of the road rules. - Get over or get off the road

Selfish Parkers Suck I’m not sure whether you in the red jeep or you in the silver truck blocked me in today in the parking lot in front of Mokulele Park. But you’re lucky that I am a nice person and did not slash your tires, key your car or steal that nice longboard in the back of your truck – even though I wanted to! Luckily (for you) I was able to break the chains in front of my car and barely turn around and squeeze by. Thanks to the nice guys that helped me! And to whoever built the wood that was standing the chains up that I had to break, I’m sorry I had to do that. - Don’t block me in

Single White Female Seeks Vomit Tossing Stud I hope you remember me. I was the chick driving alone on Mokulele. You were driving in the oncoming lane and you leaned out of your car to toss something at me. I couldn't figure out what it was until it shattered my windshield. Then I realized it was a beer bottle filled with puke. Most people would take offense to a random stranger hurling their hangover at them, but not me. I thought to myself, "Man! I really wish I could meet that guy! Not only is he cool with drinking and driving, he's fun. Dangerous. Spontaneous!" That kind of stuff really turns me on. I told a bunch of my guy friends about you, too. They're all really anxious to meet you. In fact, there's a party at my house this weekend, why don't you come over? The boys and I will be waiting for you. Don't forget to bring the beer. - Call me

Suffer the Children In case you weren't sure, mothers and fathers of Maui, child restraint systems save

your kids’ lives. So why do I keep seeing you with your kid standing up in the passenger seat, just waiting for that chance moment for an airbag to take their fragile and new lives? Is it too much trouble to pull over to breastfeed? Isn't the minute extra time spent worth the life of your child? Oh and by the way, if you're not convinced, I hope you get a big fat ticket because it is illegal. And what is this packing of small children on the moped as you race to the liquor store to pick up a six pack. This is not Indonesia, forget the beer, or walk. What are you gonna do when they fall off and you have maimed them physically for life? Sorry honey, no sports scholarship since you broke both legs when we lost control on the moped. I didn't mean to screw you up for life, I just needed a goddamn beer. - Irresponsible parents should be restrained

Road King Jerk To the guy who goes speeding through Wailea and Makena in the morning with his trailer load of kayaks, flashing his brights at people, passing them on the curves and narrow roads: ease up, brah!! Do you really need

to be rushing just so some pasty tourists can paddle around in the channel? Maui at dawn is peaceful, quiet and serene – you’re messing with that to squeeze a few bucks out. We all gotta get someplace, and you're no more important than all the rest of the drivers. Ain't no fire down there, besides it's not even light out yet. Just 'cause your pickup is bigger, don't make you da king of da road!!! - Easy like Sunday morning

Monkey Wrenching Have you ever taken your car to the mechanic and have it run worse than it originally did? Well, this is to that certain dealership grease monkey here on Maui. Next time you charge someone almost $1,000 to fix his or her car, don't rely on your “high-tech” computer diagnosis. We all know computers are at times unreliable - just because the check engine light went off, it does not mean you fixed the problem! I took it back to you and you said, "Well, you obviously have something wrong with the car." NO S**T! That's what I thought I paid you the $1,000 bucks to fix! Now you want me to do it all over again and charge me more $? Are you guys morons?! Guess what? The car is still screwed up! With your fancy computer, you should have fixed it right the first time. You wasted my time, my $, and my patience. You are hereby cut OFF! - Diagnostically screwed

- That could have been your family, brah

The Moving Proposition There a lot of great things to do in Lahaina on a Saturday night. But driving 5 mph down Front Street isn’t one of them. There you guys were, hanging out the window, catcalling at every woman walking down the street. I don’t know for a fact that you guys were sailors. But there was a destroyer anchored offshore and most tourists I’ve run into know there are better ways to pick up women than by loudly propositioning them from a moving car. Not that I had anywhere important that I needed to be—just a beach house party with lots of cute girls. But hey, you guys are defending our country so who am I to criticize your shore leave rituals? - Patriotic but put off

State Road Kill

Yeah, you in the big green truck with the “SHOPO” sticker. If I’m going 55 mph up Haleakala Hwy in a 45 mph zone, where do you get off trying to tell me to move over and let you pass?! I would feel embarrassed to have that SHOPO sticker on my truck if I were you. I know you don’t belong to the police union or you would know the speed limit. Unless you think that by having this sticker it makes you immune to public safety. Maybe it’s time for a refresher course in driver’s education. I’m sure you’ve done this before and I know you’ll probably continue to do so. Slow down idiot, this isn’t the mainland. Why you needed to be racing up Haleakala is beyond me - unless you really needed to use one of those new restrooms. - Take it easy, road warrior

The County and State's got blood on its hands and its transportation department heads up its ass. 20 years ago, accidents on the highways were more of a rarity, and the hotels and condos were just getting started. Back then you had the good sight to plan ahead and require road improvements contingent to further development. So what happened? Sold your souls to the deep pockets of developers, did you? I hope the dead haunt you in your sleep, and you die as awful of deaths as those killed on your crappy highways. More homes, more hotels and more condos and developments go up up up, but where are our highways with several safe lanes across? How many deaths can you tolerate of your taxpaying community, and of your economy supporting tourists? Accidents happen, but only you, our government bureaucrats who represent our best interests can offer a solution. The roads have already extracted their fatal tolls due to the over congested and government mismanaged state of affairs. Sure you have put some Band-Aids up in south and central Maui, but what about the rest of Maui? Don't make us taxpayers wait another 20 years, that's too many dead loved ones when you could be making a real difference in the future of your constituents. - Driving on your highway of neglect

, What s the hurry, jerkoff?

A Tribute to Zen Drivers Who Smile

You drove around me on South Kihei road, going onto the wrong side to do it, because I stopped and you were in a hurry. What's up with you, man? Yeah, you. I'm talking to you, the too-cool jerk with the reggae blasting out of the cruiser - you drove around me right there in front of Dolphin Plaza and almost flattened the family of four I had stopped for. All they wanted was to get across to the beach. They should have been allowed to have a trip to Kam I beach as the memorable thing from their day. Now, what they'll remember is that some madman came so close to running them over that Mom and Dad had to grab and pick up one kid each to make way for you to get to the crack pipe or who-cares-what you were speeding to. Four lives matter more than about two seconds of your cruising time.

Thank you to you blessed souls who let the old people go first, slow down when I'm backing out, who respect the right of way and keep your cool behind the wheel. You, the Zen Driver Who Even Smiles, deserve a highway free of traffic and a trophy for your heart of gold. If only your zen-ness could rub off on me, and I could substitute the same solitary smile for the finger as I stop for street-crossing idiots, pull off for speeding aggro souped-up Hondas, and keep sane in the most absurd of Pali Highway blockage. I keep you in mind and in awe always as I see you taking the less traveled path toward freedom from behind the wheel. I only wish I could find the same centered path as I speed, swerve around traffic and cuss out the window offering obscene gestures to all. - Thank you, road angels!

A Good Reason to Go Veg Veg Out in Haiku

PHOTO: KIRSTEN GUENTHER

Veg Out is all that and a side of soybeans. They don’t insult their sandwiches by accompanying them with Criscolubed potato chips or lard-laden fries. That would be far too ghetto for this good eating. Instead they power their plates with a scoop of edamame, for a bonus of bean-sucking salty fun. How’s that for a side of protein with your protein? “People think of vegetarian food as lacking protein, but we serve so much in every single meal,” says Head Chef Dan Hunt. “Tofu, black beans, boca, nuts— we’ve got it all.” Hunt joined the crew at Veg Out shortly after they opened almost four years ago. The owners, Cindy and Dan-o, opened the restaurant after noting that nowhere in Haiku could they find a solid vegetarian restaurant with good portions. Now they offer a whole spectrum of vegan and vegetarian selections, everything from Mexican to Italian to a Far East flare. At what other café can you find spring rolls and salsa, pizza and Pad Thai, chili and chai? This joint may not look like much from the outside, but inside, it has

something for everyone. Well, the vegetarian in everyone, that is. The menu favorite is the Muffalata sandwich ($4.95), a lotta tofu and spicy olives, smoothed over a house-made foccacia. “The locals are addicted to it,” says Hunt. Customers also rave about the Etsalada Salad ($4.95 small or $6.95 large), a mix of Mexican beans, tofu, and well— everything you’d find on a taco minus the tortilla. “We cater to a lot of surfers, wind surfers and other athletes,” says Hunt. “They like the high performance food they find here—food that won’t weigh them down.” Hunt has been a vegan himself for more than three years. “I feel good everyday,” he says. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. Besides surfing.” Not all the food at Veg Out is vegan. In fact, you’ll find a healthy dollop of dairy. Hunt himself created the Pesto Goat-Cheese Pizza ($6.50 small, $16.95 large), a palate of chevre goat cheese, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella. If you are vegan, however, most of the choices come cheese-optional. From the sandwich selection, I ordered the Maui Taro Burger ($4.95), a moist dense pancake of unidentified material, beany to the very last bite. The guts of the sandwich were

Serving up a healthy, heaping plate of secondary, though; the bun is what made it good. Sure they call it a focaccia, but what they delivered was a doughnut in the form of bread—fresh, plump and piping hot. Smeared inside the bun was a vegan mayo lending a

light, sweet aftertaste. I won’t mention they forgot to add my side of guacamole, because in the end, who really needs a side of stinking avocado? It’s mushy and mealy and well, just another “green” thing on a plate that already looks like you could play a game of PuttPutt on it. Side items aside, the sandwiches at Veg Out stand on their own. Just like the employees stand behind their vegetarian ideals. “I like the fact that we’re not serving animals here. It’s an ethical place to work,” says Hunt, as he fixes the final jalapeños on his next order of The Works—a ‘big man’s burrito,’ he calls it. “Besides, we’ve got the best menu on Maui,” he adds, “and I’m here for the food.” As it’s plain to see, so is everyone else. veggie yum-yum Veg Out is located at the Haiku Town Center, 810 Kokomo Road, next to the Haiku Post Office. Hours are Mon-Fri from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Sat from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call for take-out at 575-5320. MTW

WEEK

Linne Calodo 2000 Cherry Red Paso Robles, California

Our wine of the week is the Linne Calodo 2000 Cherry Red from Paso Robles, California. This wine features a blend of 20% Zinfandel, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre. The Zinfandel gives this wine a nice dark color with a fruit structure of raspberry jam. The Syrah and Mourvedre take over to add a gripping texture with some earthy tones from the Syrah that lead to a well-rounded, medium-soft finish. Linne Caloda is a small winery that produces only 1000 cases a year, as they are focused on producing exceptional wines with unsurpassed quality. Winemaker/owner Matt Trevison named his winery after a type of soil that his grapes grow in. He presently utilizes wines that are traditionally Old World varietals, such as Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, with some Zinfandel in the mix. The result is that Matt has created some very unique wines that are catching on quickly. Remember these wines are very limited production and very few are present in Hawaii, so get them while they last!

FILM

Dr. Snatchcatcher (Damon Wayans) and Marci (Lisa Kudrow) The 83 minute version of "Marci X" that's been released (or "dumped") into theaters this week is an example of an ill-conceived movie that's been edited down to a barely distinguishable cluster of scenes that hardly tells a story, or much less gives any kind of arc-comedic or otherwise. Marci (Lisa Kudrow) is a supreme Jewish American Princess until Dr. Snatchcatcher (Damon Wayans), a rap artist affiliated with a record label owned by Marci's billionaire dad Ben Feld (played by the film's director Richard Benjamin), attracts the negative attention of a conservative U.S. Senator with his latest CD. It seems that one early version of the movie allowed for Marci's dad to expire amid the controversy, but in the released version he's around to witness the shenanigans that romantically team up his blueblood daughter with a potty-mouthed black rapper. "Marci X" betrays its nebbish agenda in a dance/rap sequence wherein Dr. $ calls Marci onstage with him during a performance to publicly humiliate her for trying to smooth over his contrary image--among right-wing whites--with a schedule of public relations events. Marci lays down a lame rap about the couture fashion designers that she loves to patronize as a way of gaining acceptance with the less fortunate women in the audience. Marci puts the "power in her purse" up against the power in Dr. Snatchcatcher's "pants," and the covetous female members of the audience join in like lemmings to the sea. Hence, Marci's phony attitude and clothing achieve "real" credibility, to enable wealthy condescending audiences to feel like they're capable of being hip with the homies too. Don't think twice though, because they'll never see this movie anyway.

It isn't long before Marci is loving up the power in Dr. Snatchcatcher's pants herself and going head to head with U.S. Senator Spinkle (Christine Baranski) in court over the proud black oral heritage that allows for a multitude of dignified interpretations of Dr. $'s song "In Your Butt." The scene is a quick lesson in how to be insulting, patronizing and stupid all in the same breath, as butt humping is translated into a sacred example of enduring and respectful love. You can practically watch the humor fall away from the scene like wax melting off of a candle. The movie's message is that any cheesy privileged ditz is capable of co-opting the codified ideals and attitudes of the underclass for public acceptance and private pleasure. The twist is that Marci's dad already owns Dr. $'s record label, so what the audience is witnessing is black culture being milked right down to its pee pee by the greedy child of an upper class moron. If all of this seems mean spirited, that's because it is. The backslapping inside-joke humor on display here is clearly at certain people's expense for the self-congratulation of a select group of other people. The film's poster announces "Hip Hop Meets Shop Till You Drop" more prominently even than the movie's title. But you need look no further than "Marci X" to know that the legacy of Malcolm X is being undermined by some capitalist knee-jerk greed. There's a reason that rich Jewish women don't buy hip-hop CDs, and there's a reason that lower class blacks don't buy Prada and Chanel. One reason is choice and another is means. In either decision making process, one thing that will prevail is just how transparent "Marci X" is as an example of everything wrong with gross American commercialism, and how savvy the movie-going public is in knowing what to avoid. Rated R 83-mins. MTW

Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts on l’amore in Paris

Eleven international filmmakers, including Sean Penn and Mira Nair, created a short film relating to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. The only artistic restriction was that each individual film must last precisely 11 minutes, 9 seconds and 1 frame. The resulting collaboration offers some diverse geographical, cultural, and artistic perspectives on that fateful day in U.S. and world history. Subtitled in English and produced in many lanuages. Unrated. 134 minutes. Tickets: $7 w/MFF passport. $10 single.

MAGDELENE SISTERS - (R) - Drama - A story charting several years in the young lives of four "fallen women" who were rejected by their families and abandoned to the mercy of the Catholic Church in 1960's Ireland. While women's liberation is sweeping the globe, these women are stripped of their liberty and dignity and condemned to indefinite sentences of servitude in The Magdalene Laundries, in order to atone for their "sins." The last Magdalene Asylum in Ireland closed in 1996, and only since has the true horror of conditions in these institutions begun to emerge.

on whom he has long had a crush. What he doesn't plan on is the long line of other houseguests that come along in the meantime... OPEN RANGE - (R) - Western - Following the day-todayencounters of four cattle herders who roam the countryside without owning a particular piece of land, or "freegrazers", living in the final years of the Wild West, this film tells the story of how they eventually team up to rid a burgeoning remote town, Harmonville, from the machinations of a ruthlessly evil rancher, who forms a sort of makes the laws and rules, and enforces them using scare tactics and brute force. Stars Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - Set in the Caribbean Sea in the 17th century, this is the story of a gentleman rogue of a pirate, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who teams up with the daughter (Keira Knightley) of a governor (Jonathan Pryce) to stop the evil plan of a ship of dangerous pirates (led by Geoffrey Rush) who are trying to reverse an ancient curse that leaves them stuck between life and death... SEABISCUIT - PG13 - Action/Drama - This is the true story of a former bicycle repairman (Jeff Bridges), who owned a small, knobby-kneed horse called Seabiscuit, and teamed up with a half-blind ex-boxing prize fighter (Tobey Maguire) as the horse’s jockey, and a former “mustang breaker” Wild West performer (Chris Cooper) as the horse’s trainer, leading Seabiscuit to win the Horse of the Year honors in 1938. SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER - PG - Action/Adventure - The continuing adventures of spy siblings Juni and Carmen Cortez (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega). Also stars Antonio Banderas. STEP INTO LIQUID - (NR) - Documentary - This documentary profiles surfers and surfing locations all over the world, including the monstrous waves of Oahu's North Shore, the Gulf shores of Texas (where waves are created by oil supertankers), the ice-cold waters of Ireland, Santa Cruz, Costa Rica, the Cortez Banks, Da Nang in Vietnam, the tiny waves of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and the tropics of Rapa Nui. More important than the diverse and often spectacular locations and waves, however, are the wide range of surfers that are profiled, challenging the stereotypes about the surfing counterculture. S.W.A.T. - (PG13) - Action/Adventure - The tables are turned when the Los Angeles Police Department's S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) unit must protect a dangerous criminal. A grizzled veteran SWAT officer (Samuel L. Jackson) is given a second chance to cobble together a new SWAT team to protect the high-profile baddie. Emotionally distant from her A&R executive mother Roma (Heather Locklear), Ray has grown up with a revolving door of nannies and too little stability. Molly and Ray both feel painfully alone in the world, but as they try to make their new arrangement work, each discovers in the other a true friend. Sitar, Tablas & Chai – Oh My! Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Mandala in Paia If you’re familiar with ektar, kartals, ladus and samosas, then this may be the event for you! If you’ve been jonesing for an atmosphere rich in “bhav” (spiritual emotion) and can say “source of boundless joy” without snickering, then by all means, get to the “Mantra Wave Trance Dance” and Shankara concert at Mandala on Saturday. Chef Jagadish will be on hand to serve up chai, ladus and samosas, and Raj Agni will be playing kirtan, while Sri Swami Rama student Shankara will explain to me what all of this and “world music fused with devotion and rich vocal harmonies using instrumentation from the eastern musical traditions” means, exactly.

week’s ATTN: Blues Flash Thursday at the Hard Rock Cafe, Friday at Kahului Ale House, Saturday at Casanova, Sunday at Charley’s Considered by some music critics to be the Tom-Cruisein-Cocktail of blues-rock guitarists, Pat Hennessy is known for putting on a good live performance. The crowds go wild for his guitar solo played with a violin bow, as well as his behind-the-back guitar antics and Jimi Hendrix covers. I’m guessing this isn’t the kind of blues you hear grandpa singin’ out on the back porch with his hound dog and harmonica. This is more like biker bar electro-blues, guitar-shredding funk that yo’ mama needn’t know about...

Bobcat My Hero Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater Who? Oh, Shakes the Clown?! Of course! Bobcat Goldthwait is an icon of edgy, twisted, nervous-nutcase comedy. To prove my point, revisit his 1992 cult classic film, Shakes the Clown. It’s a somewhat deranged black comedy, which Goldthwait wrote, directed and starred in, about an alcoholic clown who gets framed for murder. The movie is hilarious and heartbreaking and totally reaffirms my fear of and fascination with clowns. The fact that Goldthwait wrote a satirical film about clown subculture after stealing scenes in Police Academy, Scrooged, and Blow means that he might have more than a few screws loose and therefore, I love him. He’s also in that new skate film, Grind, but you can catch his live performance right here on Maui at the MACC on Saturday. You’ll see me there for sure – I’ll be the one with the big red shoes and polka-dot tie.

THE GRID

BY KOZMIC KEV

ARIES: Your outer journey is about to challenge your inner journey. The clean freak will have to get dirty, and the slob will have to clean up. Charitable acts will not go unnoticed. You need to figure out how to be radical and reliable. TAURUS: Creativity and beauty are in your court. You may come across as “more artsy than thou.” Love affairs, games and the pushing of pleasure buttons dominate the week. Harmony reigns supreme as you express the desires of your heart. GEMINI: Danger Will Robinson! Mercury is in retrograde until September 20th. Resolving family issues will be your #1 job. Career chaos may end up producing the desired results. Having faith when the lights go out isn’t always an easy task. CANCER: Making friends and being a friend is your greatest gift. You may have some personal mobility challenges to reckon with. You'll find out how the international is related to the local. Discover your own area of expertise. LEO: All the pomp and circumstance of last week is over. The pressure is off. Your focus is on being constructive. What you really value is coming to light. You're like a contractor getting ready to build a dream house. Start with a strong foundation. VIRGO: After feeling almost completely defeated, you feel like you're on your own. You navigate a modest path and find out that you're not as alone as you thought. In fact you'll discover why people have a big love for you and your services. LIBRA: Helping others will help take your mind out of the gutter and give your spirit something to soar with. You're dealing with endings and good-byes. Finish the good work you've planned. Find someone’s life that's worse than yours before you throw in the towel. SCORPIO: The islands love you. You're finally free to enjoy life. Your challenge is to include friends and associates when you have a creative project. The way you love will affect society and vise-versa. Take heart, you have friends in high places. SAGITTARIUS: A boss that has a good sense of humor is a blessing to everyone. Laughing at your own mistakes will help dissolve tension. Propose a game plan that encourages teamwork. Plan a work party to celebrate the accomplishments of the summer. CAPRICORN: Ride the rapids in safety. Demonstrate your strength in commitment. Show yourself to be a mature partner. Your luck remains strong and is getting stronger. Take a calculated risk. You can make a fantasy vacation work. AQUARIUS: Your invention is wanted. Get ready to make a move. You'll need to let go of some things to get the thing that you really want. A purging of the ego is in process. An awakening of the kundalini is also occurring. PISCES: Sad times are over, get ready to celebrate life. Partners will offer you big love this week. Two can make your favorite thing twice as fun. You've got the power; use it wisely. Dream big and take the opposition by surprise. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Dinah Washington 8/29/24, Gloria Estefan 9/1/57, Charlie Sheen 9/3/65 • kozmickev@sunset.net

ADVICEGODDESS

BY AMY ALKON

PAST AND FURIOUS I've been with my boyfriend for over a year. During our first six months, I slept with three ex-boyfriends. Horrible as that sounds, I don't take cheating lightly. I think I was confused about my readiness to be in a serious relationship, and wasn't really over my most recent ex or a guy in Ireland I'd had a love affair with a few years back. When I returned from a trip to Ireland in February, I realized how much I love my boyfriend and wanted to commit to him. Our relationship became more solid, and we moved in together. Shortly afterward, he searched for and read my journal, suspecting something had happened in Ireland. Like an idiot, I'd put everything in writing. He was crushed, but said, if given time, he could forgive me. Well, any minor conflict now turns into a huge screaming match, with him dragging everything up and threatening to leave. (He always apologizes afterward, says he's happy with me and doesn't want to leave.) I feel he's holding this over my head to make me feel guilty whenever something doesn't go his way. Is it likely to blow over in time? Should I accept this as my punishment? --Hester Prynne There are many different styles of conflict resolution. Some people stare into space, waiting for the answer to crack them over the head like a falling ceiling tile. Others look high and low for the answer, even stopping off at ex-boyfriends' places to make sure it isn't projected on the ceiling tiles above their beds. Some people enlist friends or mediators to help them strip the issue down to bare essentials. Others prefer to strip out the middlemen AND the issue, and just get naked with Larry, Moe, and Curly. Apparently, you wanted to be very, very, very sure you made the right decision: "No, no... not another night of investigative wild sex!" We all feel your pain. Really, we do. And, while it isn't the prettiest picture for your current boyfriend, your adventures in ex-boyfriend boffing did serve an important purpose -- helping you finish unfinished business so you could pick his face out of the crowd. Of course, there's a right way to go about doubt-eradication, and it isn't giving your boyfriend the impression you're his one and only while passing yourself around like a cheese plate behind his back. It certainly would have been nice if you'd gone to the trouble of breaking up with him before you set off on your international sex tour. Right now, all that matters about the past is whether it predicts the future. When there's a decision to be made -- "Would you like fries with that?" -- it seems unlikely you'll respond by trying to maul the pimply guy behind the register. It's your job to make your boyfriend understand that. It's also your job to tell him his job: deciding whether he'd rather be in love or in archeology, and acting accordingly. Love requires walling off the past instead of weaponizing it, and resolving conflicts as a "we," not a "him" vs. the girl who snuck off to Stooge-apalooza. Unfortunately, unless you can convince him to stop tipping the scales with a stack of dirty pictures whenever you want Thai and he wants Italian, he'll probably end up with only his grudge to take to dinner: "More Chianti, my love?" The waiter will be too polite to mention that he's sitting across from an empty chair. It's sure to occur to your boyfriend later, however, since moral high ground never makes much of an impression in bed.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLENECK I've been seeing a really sweet guy for about two weeks. He told me that he likes me a lot, but he just wants to be friends and be by himself so he can get his life together. I don't know what to do to get him to open up and tell me what's wrong. How can I help him if he doesn't let me know what's on his mind?
