Did they walk down to Makena Beach, face the magnificent ocean and say to themselves, “The only thing missing from this paradise is traffic, violence and death?” We've sacrificed just about everything to the god of progress, and the payoff is that Maui Time Weekly can run an entire cover story on road rage? We just read your letter to the editor signed by “Name withheld by request” concerning Maui Police being absent during car-break-ins (Letters, June 19). We once conducted an experiment to locate these officers during car-break-ins and beachtheft epidemic that swept 505 Front Street's beach park during summer, 2002. Some officers were giving those easy parking tickets, a distraction from serious crimes. Often there were dozens of empty
parking spaces in those lots during the ticketing, and many empty spots along the block of Front Street, so they were dealing with victimless crimes. I once got a parking ticket when my vehicle was the only one in a big parking lot! Other cops were hiding parked in the bush south of Lahaina, looking for seat-belt violators, expired registrations and safety stickers, and people going a little over the speed limit. During one summer of heavy theft and break-ins at 505, cops were often seen harassing surf schools for $50 permits! Most of the guys hassled had permits, and had already been hassled by other cops who should have been patrolling for break-ins at the moment. Thinking $50 will help solve Maui County's millions of dollars in budget deficiencies (do the math from the 5 schools there) is ludicrous. Meanwhile, some instructors from a school with a permit were breaking into the cars! We do have some great “police officers” on Maui to offset the reputation of “bad cops.” The good officers have recovered my stolen possessions, saved me from thugs, helped support rights for my Kanaka Maoli Hawaiian friends, shared waves with me in the water, and given me a friendly aloha on the streets. All the bad cops should follow their example, and not bring shame to the good majority. -Steve Omar, Lahaina

Touring the world’s largest paper airplane museum Ray Roberts loves paper airplanes. Old Catalina flying planes, new Lockheed Stealth Fighters, tiny Curtiss Jennys made of card stock and even these giant Russian MiGs folded together with a really coarse paper. He loves them so much he collects them. He’s got about 2,000 now, which is enough for a museum, so about eight or nine years ago he opened his own museum. It sits today at the Maui Mall in Kahului, between a Christian bookstore and a Japanese travel agency. “We’ve been told that this is the largest and the only paper airplane museum in the world,” said the 68-year-old Kahului resident, who runs the museum with his wife Edy. Pretty much every plane ever built is represented in some all-paper form at the museum. There are World War I fighters from England, Piper Cubs, B-17 bombers, Voyager space probes, Russian helicopters, an Israeli fighter kit printed in Hebrew and a hand-folded plane made from a single sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 paper and “Designed by Keith McCoy, Haleakala Waldorf School.” Roberts says the largest paper airplane in the museum is a Catalina Flying Boat from Poland. The smallest is a full-color card model of a Navy jet from the 1950s, barely bigger than a half-dollar. The strangest kit is by far a tiny plane that can be attached to a fly. The museum also includes about 350 historical photos documenting the history of aviation on Maui and a stunning array of aircraft models built from aluminum cans.
“I’ve lost track of how many there are,” said Roberts, who also goes by the nickname “The Tin Can Man of Maui.” “But there are probably 500 to 600. I’m glad to say I don’t have to drink all the juice any more. We like to use cans of Hawaiian juice, both for personal reasons and because we have a lot of students coming through here and they’ll learn about alcohol in their own time.” A former Los Angeles-area high

school shop and drafting teacher, the soft-spoken Roberts has white hair and a white beard and, on the day he took me on tour of his museum, wore a bright Aloha shirt covered in flowers and World War II-era aircraft. In between showing me a photo documenting Maui’s first commercial airline in 1929 and a model of the World War II Corsair fighter powered by a rubber band, one kit fell on the floor near some boys. “Thank you gentlemen for being so careful and putting that back,” he told them. “We didn’t drop it,” one began to say. “Yes, I know,” Roberts said. “But thank you for being careful.” Roberts loves telling stories about pictures and old news clippings on the walls. There’s the 1925 photo of a submarine that had just rescued a downed flying boat, towing it to Kauai. And a shot of Henrietta Fuller, who in 1943 was Maui’s first female airport manager. That shot once prompted a little girl to tug at Robert’s pant leg, informing him that Fuller was her “auntie.” “I put her in front of her class,” he said. “She became the special guest speaker and told them about her auntie. I think she grew 10 feet that day.” Then there was the time a group of teens came in, prompting him to walk over and take them on a tour. He walked them through his museum, which takes about 10 minutes if you’re really paying attention, only to find that the donation box mounted near the end had been busted open. “My immediate reaction was that these guys couldn’t have done anything bad,” he said. Roberts says he asked them to go wait outside, which they did, then he called security. After a check, Roberts called the teens back inside, where they finished the tour and left. A little while later, Roberts said the “biggest, toughest-looking guy” came back. Tears in his eyes, the guy gave Roberts a wad of bills. “You need these,” the guy told Roberts. “Are you going to call the police?”

Iraq: What Went Wrong A fair and balanced look at America’s new Vietnam A few months ago I wrote that Bush could salvage a war based on lies only if he played the earnest liberator rather than the crusading colonizer. He had already abandoned Afghanistan; few cared or noticed. But Iraq wasn’t nearly as remote. The world would be watching, and we would only have one chance to make a good first impression. If we were really Iraq’s saviors, we should have kept our paws off Iraq’s oil reserves, respected Saddam Hussein’s oil deals with France, Germany and Russia, and foresworn sweetheart contracts with politically-connected corporations. The Pentagon should have inserted enough troops to a prevent civil war, held elections and, most importantly, rebuilt the country’s ravaged infrastructure. “It’s going to take billions of dollars and several hundred thousand troops at least a decade to get Iraq back on its feet,” I predicted. I wish I could pick stocks as accurately. The bombing of Najaf’s Imam Ali mosque, killing pro-U.S. Ayatollah Mohammed Bakr al Hakim and at least 90 Shiite faithful, marks the start of full-fledged religious warfare in the U.S.-occupied central and southern sectors. Possible suspects include fellow Shiite cleric Mukhtader al Sadr, an Iraqi nationalist opposed to the U.S. occupation, Iranian intelligence agents and Sunnis affiliated with Saddam Hussein’s deposed government. Iraqi complaints that U.S. forces failed to provide adequate security only tell part of the story. Hoping that Iraq’s next leaders would organically emerge from the mish-mash of former exile groups, Administrator Paul Bremer refused to create a new U.S. puppet regime or allow Iraqis to hold elections. This faith-based occupation policy has sparked a violent struggle among the opposition parties. DeBaathification and random sweeps of homes in Sunnidominated regions are alienating the Sunni minority while emboldening insurgent Shiite militants. And the Iranians, worried that Bush will invade them after next year’s presidential election, are funding radical Shiites to keep us tied up. Saddam kept Iraq’s federation of conflicting tribes and religions together through intimidation and bribery. The Pentagon lacks the troops to accomplish the

former and none of the cash for the latter, making the old tyrant look great by comparison. Our early emphasis on seizing oil fields, and schemes to funnel revenue from the U.N. oilfor-food program into lucrative contracts with Halliburton (which still pays Dick Cheney a huge salary) and MCI-WorldCom (a major Bush-Cheney campaign donor) belie our stated commitment to liberation and spreading democracy. We’re more Genghis Khan than Dwight Eisenhower. Bush, a former businessman, is treating “liberated” Iraq like the victim of a hostile leveraged buy-out. In an LBO, you borrow a target company’s purchase price and saddle its balance sheet with the resulting debt, layoffs and possible bankruptcy. In Iraq, Bush hopes to defray rising costs of occupation--$1 billion a week for the Pentagon, plus $30 billion to fix water, electricity and oil production facilities--by selling Iraq’s oil—basically asking the Iraqi people to pay for our invasion. Our soldiers disposed of Saddam’s army, but they haven’t been nearly as effective as goodwill ambassadors. Partly because they don’t speak Arabic or understand Islamic culture, jumpy U.S. soldiers are killing so many Iraqi civilians that the Pentagon is deliberately not keeping a count of accidental casualties. Our troops are swaggering about the desert like Gestapo thugs, robbing locals of their cash, kicking down doors, roughing up women (a no-no under Islam) and brown-bagging innocent men’s heads before dragging them off screaming into the night. The good news is that Bush’s neo-con wolf pack is finally beginning to admit that the facts didn’t fit with all their bluster. “Some conditions were worse than we anticipated, particularly in the security area,” acknowledges Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz. Richard Armitage, the radical right’s number two at State, now wants the U.N. to get involved. The Defense Policy Board’s Richard Perle, newly concedes that we should have prepared a postwar Iraqi government. “The answer is to hand over power to Iraqis as soon as possible,” says Perle. The real answer is to get the hell out before one more American or Iraqi gets killed in a lost cause. “Leaving now would place Iraqis under violent usurpers and set a precedent that could haunt the U.S. government for years,” argues The New York Times’ Christopher Marquis. More money, more men, more international involvement--those were good ideas back in March. Now it’s too late to avoid the ostracizing of the United States or the Afghanistanization of Iraq.
Reuters reported in June that would-be painter Rainer Herpel, 51, of Bad Ems, Germany, was finally speaking again, after having remained silent for the last 29 years as a reaction to his father’s disapproval of art as a career. Herpel lived with his mother, spent most of the time alone in his room concentrating on his paintings, only occasionally ventured outdoors, and came out of his shell only when his father passed away. Said Herpel, "All great artists were outsiders (probably meaning "different from us") before they had success."
OUR CIVILIZATION IN DECLINE In Hawera, New Zealand, a 25-year-old sex worker ("Brooke") at a massage parlor set the town abuzz in July by advertising that she (who recently gave birth) would (presumably for an additional fee) allow her customers to consume her nutritious breast milk; the director of the local breastfeeding advocates, La Leche League, said she was concerned that Brooke’s baby was getting short-changed.
OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY Omorotu Francis Ayovuare, 55, a professional surveyor from Nigeria, has filed 72 employment discrimination complaints against British companies in the last five years, with only two minor victories to show. According to a report in London’s Daily Telegraph in June, Ayovuare has cost responding employers and the government the equivalent of nearly US$1 million to deal with him before employment tribunals. One panel ruled in 2001 that Ayovuare, who is "impressive on paper," keeps applying for jobs beyond his level of practical experience.

RAP AS A SECOND LANGUAGE In a June copyright infringement case, British High Court judge Kim Lewison ruled against the composer of the 2001 song "Burnin’," explaining that he could not help Lewison because he did not know what certain lyrics meant (such as "shizzle my nizzle"). The lyrics, said the judge, although written in a form of English, were "for practical purposes a foreign language" and therefore, he could not be sure whether the borrowed use of the lyrics impugned them.

In June, a federal judge unsealed the results of an investigation into Pennsylvania State Police misconduct, listing 89 incidents, including one involving a trooper in Rockview, Pa., who was accused of defecating on another trooper at a party, of inserting a carrot into his rear end and eating part of it, then passing gas and shooting the carrot out. And in July, New York City’s deputy police commissioner, Frederick J. Patrick, was arrested and charged with taking $113,000 from an office charity fund and using it to pay jailed inmates to make calls to sex hotlines, which Patrick then allegedly listened in on for his own gratification.

(3) Argued over who should feed the couple’s goats (Pearl Lynne Smith, 47, allegedly shot her husband to death, Eldon, Okla., June).

Is Maui finally regaining control over the Iao Aquifer? Most everyone I know likes water. They like to bathe in it, wash their cars in it, even drink it. Me, I love the stuff. Can’t get enough of it. That’s pretty much the whole situation around here, which is why the Iao Aquifer—the biggest source of fresh water on the island—is in danger of going dry. The Iao Aquifer supplies over half the people on Maui with drinking water. This same region supplies about 50 million gallons of water every day to large agri-businesses. It’s amazing how much water there is at the Iao. Wells sunk there extend through two dozen feet of fresh water in some places. Similar wells in Haiku aquifers may just find five feet of water.
On Sept. 5 and 6, local government officials and environmental activists representing organizations like the State Department of Health, the Clean Water Branch of the Statewide Watershed Project, the Sierra Club and Maui Tomorrow will host a two-day community panel on the Iao Aquifer’s future. “This weekend will be an attempt to combine science, culture—including the hula— and people and talk about watersheds,” said Lucienne de Naie, Maui Tomorrow’s vice president. “We’re not going to talk about apportionment—just sources. I want to see apportionment in a public discussion, but we’re not prepared for that yet.” Read too many of Joe Sugarman’s editorials in Maui Weekly, and you’d think suddenly everyone woke up and realized the island was in trouble. Sure, loss of the aquifer could mean anything from the total draining of the island’s largest fresh water source to dangerous sinkholes. In any case, Maui would have to rely on far more expensive methods of water treatment. But these dangers are nothing new. There were shortages from 1972 to 1974. There was an outright water moratorium in 1982. In fact, locals have been sounding regular alarms over the Iao water table for the last 15 years.

That’s because the public/private partnership which built the Iao Aquifer water system fouled up the wells. There had been wells at Iao since the 1950s, but the first move to really drain the place came in the mid 1970s. It was then that the county and four big resort developers formed the Central Maui Joint Venture. Using $4 million in state funds, the county built a pipeline to distribute Iao aquifer water, while the developers fronted $2 million for well construction. Under the agreement terms, pretty much anyone who wanted the water could drink from the Iao, as long as the total daily draw didn’t exceed 19 million gallons. Because officials ruled that the well construction—paid with private money—wasn’t subject to state environmental review, the resort developers did their work on the cheap. They even tossed out one of their own consultant recommendations that they sink pairs of wells every half mile or so across a wide swath of territory, opting instead for an easier plan bunching the wells up in a smaller area. The result was like putting two straws in the same part of a glass of ice water, they quickly run dry even though water may remain in the cup. Still, water was flowing like never before. Kihei, then a tiny town of barely 1,900, exploded over the next 10 years to a population exceeding 10,000. Today the town boasts nearly 30,000 residents. There was no way the aquifer could sustain that level of growth. Environmentalists watched in horror as saline levels rose. By 1985, state officials began talking of turning the whole valley into a “Water Management Area”—bureaucratic lingo for permission to start checking pumping records, with an eye on eventually imposing pumping limits. Now it was the growth lobby that was scared. Suddenly, county and water officials were holding hands, saying everything was under control. They sunk a few new wells— something they should have down 10 years earlier. And they beat back the State of Hawaii’s move to impose order on the Iao Valley. They beat them again in 1991 and 1997. Finally, this year—just a month ago, in fact-the state won. Hence the hysteria from prodevelopment guys like Sugarman. But activists like de Naie also understand that simple pumping monitoring will not solve all the Iao Aquifer’s problems. “The people of Maui are too smart to make those mistakes,” said de Naie. “If they get accurate information, which is the whole reason for the conference, then they will make better decisions.” MTW Watershed Awareness Involvement, Maui Community College, Kalama Building, Rm 103, Wailuku. LOCALNEWS MONDAY, AUG 25 It doesn’t look like much now—a couple overgrown baseball diamonds, weeds, mud, a few stone piles—but Moku’ula was, from the 1700s to the mid-1800s, the ancient palace of the Hawaiian monarchy. Basically, we’re talking one of Hawaii’s most sacred sites. It’s in Lahaina, near the intersection of Shaw and Front Streets, which happens to sit across the street from the Maui Time Weekly world headquarters, which is way, way cool. Not that it’s swelled our already swell egos. Anyway, Mayor Alan M. Arakawa just moved $500,000 in county funds over to the non-profit Friends of Moku’ula to try to restore at least a part of its old glory. That means no Subway! No way. Maybe an L&L… Here’s a shocker: gas prices are up again. And still rising. There are all the normal excuses, like the upcoming Labor Day holiday, war in Iraq, new gas tax. But how come we had all those things years ago and prices stayed, well, a LOT lower? Of course, Bill Clinton was president back then. Now we got good ol’ boy George W. in the Oval Office. That would be the guy whose biggest benefactors are in the oil business. Same guy who was in the oil business in Midland Texas few years back, ‘til the whole thing went bust. Guy practically has oil flowing through his veins. And we’ve got high gas prices… Come on people, do I have to draw you a picture?!

So Nies allegedly goes Shogun on this dude, slashing the man’s head. He survived—get this—because he was wearing a hat. At this point the police felt obligated to get into the act. So what does Nies do? Pretty much what you’d expect any loon playing Jedi Knight in a Longs Drug Store would do—he charged the cops, who did what they do best and shot him in the pelvis. Is this not the greatest anti-smoking commercial ever?

You people make me sick… Which reminds me-Ooka Super Market in Wailuku, one of Maui’s last true mom-and-pop Asian supermarkets, is gonna close. Seems the recent death of longtime market owner Barbara Ooka was too much for the rest of the family to bear. Ooka’s flowers, meat, local food selections and prices are among the best on the island. Preliminary plans are to turn the supermarket site into a community clinic, though the Ooka family says their market will stay open at least two more years.

The Hi-Tech/Ezekiel School Bus Sk8 Tour rolls across Maui The parking lot at Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului was swarming with kids a couple Sunday mornings ago. It was just 9 a.m., but the kids were clearly buzzing with excitement. Making matters more surreal were their matching red shirts, all featuring a Big Daddy Roth-like tiki driving a school bus with skateboards flying out the windows designed by local artist Lance Bowen. The whole thing looked
like some invasion of red ants. There were 120 or so kids there, some as young as seven, at least one in his mid-30s, but most fell between 10 and 12. One kid was on crutches, but virtually all of them were carrying skateboards. They were laughing and running around and generally having a blast because they were about to go on one of the most unique skateboard tours of all time, the Hi-Tech/Ezekiel

School bus Sk8 Tour. The tour is the brainchild of Hi-Tech skateboard buyer Aubry Boutin. A couple months ago, while discussing ways to get local kids involved in skating, Boutin came up with an interesting idea: Instead of the basic Tony Hawk-load-thepros-and-tour-the-country, Boutin decided to load the regular skateboard kids and tour them around the Valley Isle. He didn’t think anyone would take him seriously, but when people did, he threw himself into the organization. For parents with young kids, it was the best babysitting deal of all time. For the kids, it was a chance to skate Maui's three skate parks with your buddies, hang with the pros, and get some free stuff. Costing each kid just 10 bucks, the kids got an all-day tour with pros and a bunch of cool stuff, including the Lance Bowen shirt, a Transworld Skate beanie or cap, a subscription to Transworld Skateboard magazine, lunch at Horhitos and a few other assorted freebies from Ezekiel. Even with over 100 kids making reservations, there was still a waiting list of 20 kids dying to get about the tour on Aug. 24. Their collective worries that they might be left behind fed the rest of the group’s anxiety. But when the busses arrived, the drivers said the menehune kids could sit three to a seat, making room for everyone. A noisy 20-minute bus ride later, and the skate groms attacked Kihei's Kalama Park with a passion. With tunes blasting, skate pro Carlos DeAndrade lived up to his billing by skying with huge ollies on all of the transitions. This, just after DeAndrade placed fifth in the X-Games held in Los Angeles just three days earlier.

After a sweaty 90-minute session, it was lunchtime over at Horhitos. The kids devoured Horhitos chicken and beef tacos with almost as much passion as they did the Kalama spines. Air-conditioning, fresh Mexican food, all the soda you could drink and skate videos, all in one day? Who needed mom? The kids then headed to Keopuolani Park in Wailuku. Joel Parker of the YMCA was the cool host. There was also a tent for DJ Boomshot to spin his discs. The kids were going off as well as DeAndrade and Rodrigo Lima, another Brazilian pro. Once again, the red ants scampered everywhere--jumping the volcano, sliding the handrail, grinding the pipe. A couple hours of that, and the kids were on their way to the tour’s last stop, the new skate park at the Paia Youth & Cultural Center. The park is still not officially open—the center still needs another $20,000 to build a fence and finish the electrical work--so only the pros and sponsored skaters could skate it. This was a total bummer to the kids, who at first could only watch the guys skate the free-flowing park. Then Kerry Getz, a pro who knocks down serious coin for riding a strip made from layers of compressed wood, noticed a bunch of kids trying to skate a ledge near the park. So he went over and set up a best trick contest. By 5:30 p.m., the kids were exhausted and the busses rolled back to Hi-Tech. All that was left was for the pros to give away all their skateboard equipment, which often literally included the shirts off their backs. On kid, Taylor Daly of Makawao, was stoked he got Rodrigo Lima’s sweaty T-shirt. So stoked he even instructed his mom never to wash it. MTW

Gretchen Meyer knows how the U.S. doesn't much like immigrants anymore Gretchen Meyer moved to Hawaii from the Netherlands 16 years ago. She holds a valid green card, but that wasn't much help last December, when U.S. immigration agents arrested her at Honolulu International Airport. They confiscated her green card, took mug shots, fingerprinted her four times, then interrogated her for hours. They forbade her from using the phone, seized her possessions, then accused her of having ties to terrorists. Her supposed crime: Trying to reenter the U.S. for a prolonged period of time without a proper reentry permit. After many hours of this, she broke down in exhaustion and began signing the numerous forms officials placed before her. "I was confused, upset, tired, and sick, and it felt like the immigration officials interviewing me kept putting words into my mouth and skewing the answers I gave," she recalled recently. (Meyer is not her real name; she requested anonymity.) "After hours of this, I signed everything they wanted me to, because I wanted to get out of there. I know they are trying to do their job, but I felt I had been treated like a criminal and I could not understand why." It is a fact that immigrants from all over the world made the United States of America. Especially here in Maui, immigrant contributions are visible everywhere—more so than most places because the island is so small. There are artists here from Germany; Hawaiian Canoe Club members from Brazil; salsa dancing instructors from Cuba; restaurant owners from France. Yet periodically throughout our history, government and society will, out of fear, usually, begin to tighten the immigration valve and make it tougher for people to come here and start a new, better life. We live in one of those times right now, as Meyer can certainly testify. International terrorism is the new big threat that underlies U.S. foreign policy and—like the old big threats that were Communism, Fascism, the Japanese, Communism again and the Spanish—is easily painted as an alien devil requiring immediate exorcism. Today, with modern media and communications technology, this exorcism can involve racial profiling at the airline ticket window, intensified FBI surveillance of foreign charities and, if the population gets scared enough, relocation

camps and mass deportations. Thankfully, the U.S. still maintains relatively liberal immigration laws. Yet individuals wanting to repeat the experience of Albert Einstein, Andrew Carnegie and Yakov Smirnov still have to clear many hurdles on their way to Maui's shores. For instance, take Mexican immigrants. They make up Hawaii's fastest growing immigrant group. For them, to work two jobs is a gift, they're happy to do it," said Ramon Ferrer, an-American immigration attorney in Wailuku. To get here, Mexican immigrants have to make enormous sacrifices. Their families work extremely hard in Mexico to save enough money to send an able-bodied young man across the border with a "coyote," then from California by plane to Maui. Succeeding in all that, your average Mexican immigrant arrives here and happily works a grueling job. He saves his money and wires it to his family in Mexico in order for their quality of life to improve and so that his wife or brother can join him later. "Many Mexican families here are very happy that they can work and the man can arrive home everyday with something for his family to eat, which isn't always the case in Mexico," said one Mexican immigrant who preferred anonymity. "It is so easy here. Many people can't believe it because they are only thinking about how much more they can get. Here, Mexican families are happy to be able to eat everyday, so they celebrate it." It was this good life that Gretchen Meyer was looking for when she originally moved to the U.S. with her boyfriend. They had just spent three years in the Caribbean and Latin America having adventures, learning new things and meeting new people. She wanted to stay in the U.S. for three months, then make her way to Australia. She traveled all around the country, eventually ending up in Los Angeles. "I hitchhiked from El Paso, Texas to L.A., something I wouldn't do now," she said. "When I woke up in L.A. I was so impressed by the mountains and all the cars, and the freeway. Everything is so big in the U.S. It's so big that you can be whatever you want. "The U.S. is so vast and open, whereas Europe is so densely populated," said Meyer. "When you drive a few hours in
Europe you pass through places where people are speaking different languages, the cultures are all different. Also in Europe, everything is on a smaller scale. People know each other wherever they go—the baker knows you, the guy at the kiosk where you buy your paper everyday knows you, etc." Meyer won her green card in the Diversity Lottery in 1995, which is a system that randomly grants 50,000 green cards per year, a certain amount allotted to people of many different countries. She had lived, worked, and studied in this country since 1989. "I feel very fortunate to have won a green card—it is my most important possession," said Meyer. "It is generally harder for free spirits like me to get a green card because they mostly go to people with important credentials. The Lottery is great because it is random and fair." While in L.A. she attended college, established a life, and fell in love with an American man named Baron. They grew tired of L.A. and needed a change. In 1997, they moved to Maui, wanting only to stay a year. The quiet and peacefulness of Maui was too much of a shock for L.A. transplant Baron, but Meyer loved it right away. Frustrated with the inability to get business done, they moved to Oahu, staying until 1999. They then returned to the mainland and drove across country in a 1956 Cadillac. After an extended trip through Europe and Asia, they decided to move back to Hawaii. That's when, after arriving on Dec. 6, 2002, immigration agents busted Meyer at the airport. Things might have been easier had Meyer and Barron gotten married. After all, marriage is the most common way that people gain legal status, even if they are not betrothed for love. A South American woman once proposed to me, but just as a "business." One American I know married a Brazilian for $5,000. Another European woman said her Vedic astrologer said that the most auspicious day for her to marry her American lover was conveniently two days before her visa ran out. "Most people who come here from the developing world are motivated by the economy," said a female friend from a Caribbean island. "Even though I miss things about my country, life is better here, and it has been worth coming. I would do whatever is necessary to stay here, as long as it is dignified." But marriage is hardly the easy way into the U.S. A Canadian friend of mine married an American just to gain legal status. One morning at 5 a.m., immigration agents pulled her out of the bed of her illegal Israeli boyfriend. Agents wasted no time deporting his ass. As for her, she was then taken back to the apartment she shared with her "husband," just before another foreign friend escaped getting discovered by the arriving

Immigration officers. Many immigrants live in constant fear of the Bureau Of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) because they are working without permission or overstaying their visas. "When immigration does their sweeps, everyone stays home,” said José, a Cuban immigrant. Most people interviewed for this story did not want their names mentioned out of fear of being apprehended, sure, but also to maintain their humility. “Our primary emphasis is the removal of criminal aliens,” said Don Radcliffe of the BCIS on Oahu. “We work with local police forces to combat the bringing in of drugs, prostitution, or pornography. We apprehend illegal immigrants and the smugglers who bring them in, as well as investigating fraudulent marriages and counterfeit documents. We also collaborate with the Joint Terrorism Taskforce and the FBI because terrorists don't announce themselves. We don't know why they are here or what their intentions are, so they pose a security risk.” According to Radcliffe, most people in Hawaii oppose illegal immigration. He said they reason that illegals take advantage of government services and take jobs away from Americans. He added that the office doesn't keep illegal immigrant records for the islands, but estimated that there are about 10,000 illegals in Hawaii as a whole. However, the children of illegal aliens are allowed to attend public schools, and although illegal families and individuals are not supposed to collect government services, they often find a way. “Manpower is our biggest hurdle,” he said. We can always use more agents and intelligence officers. I would like to start an office on Maui, but the funds don't exist for it.” The treatment of Gretchen Meyer exemplifies the often heavy-handed methods of the BCIS. The agency, once known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service, now falls within the labyrinthine Department of Homeland Security. “They got a lot stricter after 9/11,” said Ferrer. “The government is very strict on who they let in. Immigration does a real detailed background check and people have to prove that they have a means to support themselves.” As Gretchen Meyer found out—the hard way. After her traumatic run in with the law, Meyer had to scrutinize immigration law and defend herself in court, just to get her green card. She says Dayna Dias, Hawaii’s only immigration judge, gave her hope that the right thing is done in court. Meyer still lives on Maui, but now works as a trainer with the Mini Society, an organization that teaches 8-12 yearolds concepts of entrepreneurship, economics, and, fittingly, citizenship. MTW

Hans Mayne is an interesting guy. He’s a British/Swedish/Indian yogi who’s traveled 22 countries. He’s fluent in seven languages. He’s worked as a chef pretty much everywhere from Beverly Hills to the hills of Sweden. And he knows curry. Which is good, because he and his wife Lori Lee run a little roadside stand called Curry in a Hurry. If you’ve driven down Dairy Road in Kahului, you’ve seen it, probably passed it a couple dozen times. Maybe you thought it was just another greasy stand selling tacos. Or perhaps you took one look at the name, thought about what it would be like to choke down a plate of curry in a hurry, and took off. Well, you should take a second look. And try a few free samples. The Maynes are really good about letting their customers taste before they buy. I was barely at the window when Hans started hocking daily specials, doling out a few in Dixie cups. One taste-test is all it takes. As I slurped down a shot of Moroccan Cream of Carrot soup, I realized this is no second-class curbside shack. This place prepares food with pride and passion—even in the middle of a parking lot. All the food is made from scratch. It’s completely vegetarian and cooked with extreme care. Working in an exceptionally small space, Hans and Lori Lee prepare different selections each day, like South Indian Vegetable Curry, Hawaiian Coconut Curry, Lebanese Lentils and English Cream of Split Pea Soup. They also serve some items wrapped in a flaky filo shell—Indian samosas, spanakopita, eggplant, veggie burgers, falafel and more. To make it easy, the food rings in at
two prices: $4 for most pastry items, soups and salads and $8 for entrees. I tried the Tofu Vindalu, a spicy slosh of fresh vegetables and soy over a bed of basmati. The tofu comes soaked in an aromatic steam of cumin and curry, somersaulting flavors on all tips of the tongue. I also tasted the Tofu Tandoori—squares of fire-engine hot tofu chunks cooled in a creamy hot-pink yogurt sauce. The Maynes believe in cooking according to Ayurvedic principles. Ayurveda tries to match diet to mind-body type (“dosha”) to ensure good health and well-being. Hans describes their dishes as a delightful and delicious alternative in vegetarian eating. “This is brain food,” he said. “Food that calms the nerves, increases the mind awareness and helps all bodily functions.” The Maynes have lived in Maui since 1991. For the last five years they’ve served quality food at a reasonable price at Simple Pleasures Cafe & Gallery, Wailuku's all-vegetarian café. They also started the old Hawaiian Strudel Company, which served the island until 2000. Anyone with that background has to be eccentric. And Hans Mayne certainly is. During our meal he told my friend Ted he had great nostrils—“the perfect size for proper oxygenating of the system.” Hans is all about breathing. Enlightenment too. On our way out, he even handed me a flyer on a renowned spiritual guru coming to Maui. When you go for a meal at this roadside stand, you get an earful and a mouthful. Both are worth the trip. Get Down Garden Style At the Maui Academy of Performing Arts There’s something about a “garden party” that on the surface sounds a little lame. Really, who wants to sit around some stuffy white-cloaked table, sipping tea and pointing pinkies? Unless the Mad Hatter himself would be there doling out the drinks, most people would skip the garden party for their own backyard and a couple burgers. Amazingly enough, the non-profit Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) throws a really good bash. For the last 15 years, they’ve been throwing garden-style parties as fundraisers. This year’s event, set for September 7, will include wine tasting, restaurant samplings, auctions and live entertainment. “The garden party isn’t just for the elite,” said MAPA managing director Francie Von Tempsky. “It’s an event with an afternoon garden flare. I love the energy of it. People come to enjoy themselves while raising money for our organization.” But this year’s party will introduce something new: Fresh Art. These are paintings produced on site, live, as the party is going on. Fresh Art allows guests to watch artists depict the day on canvas. This year, 15 artists will scatter the lawns of the Yokuochi estate in Wailuku, painting whatever strikes them as interesting. According to Von Tempsky, the scene will be worth capturing. “It is held at the grounds of the former sugar manager’s house—very old Wailuku,” she said. “It’s quite lovely. Paintings are auctioned off while they are still wet. They are exquisite pieces of art by well-known artists on the island.” Bidding on individual pieces runs from $100 to $1000. The money goes to good use. Now in its 30th year, MAPA provides educational programs—dance,

drama, music and mask-making classes, a drama program in schools to raise literacy skills, and a professional performance tour to schools throughout Hawaii for more than 40,000 people every year. “I take pride in what the arts can do for people in the community,” said Von Tempsky. “MAPA takes performing arts as its medium in enriching individuals, building communities and connecting our world through the performing arts.” Your $50 admission to the Garden Party will certainly help MAPA, but it will also
allow you to sip wine samples while feeding on savory suckling and pan-seared salmon from some of the island’s best restaurants. The Chef’s Festival will feature restaurants like Erik’s Seafood and Sushi, Sansei and Hula Grill. The live and silent auctions offer more than 200 items up for bid, including restaurant certificates, massage and spa treatments, helicopter rides and even overnight stays in Paris. Or maybe you’ll just go straight for the entertainment. Want big hair heavy metal? Too bad. The band Moondance will practice
its own version of the performing arts in what Von Tempsky describes as “easy listening.” In any case, Von Tempsky is sure that the party “will be the afternoon social event of the year.” Some people, she said, even wear hats. Straight Man, Not Funny Man David Spade Chews More Than He Can Bite Dickie Roberts Former Child Star (★) Even if David Spade had Tom Green’s comic instincts coupled with Jim Carrey’s gushy delivery, he’d still need a gallon of espresso to achieve the spastic energy he imagines for himself. Anyone who endured Spade’s barely tolerable Joe Dirt knows that the comedian is ill equipped to infuse parody into a character, no matter how ridiculous the hairstyle or decor. In Dickie Roberts Former Child Star, Spade (“Dickie Roberts”) is a 35-year-old, washed up former star of a TV sitcom, still chasing fame when he isn’t working as a valet parking attendant in Los Angeles. A $30,000 advance on his autobiography and a film audition with Rob Reiner spurs Dickie to offer $20,000 to a surrogate family in hopes they will allow him to live the “normal childhood” he never had so he can score a role in Reiner’s movie. This strained plot collides with Spade’s despondent demeanor as comic set pieces come and go like wrinkles on a mussed bed sheet. We see our selfish, insecure protagonist letting a set of elevator doors close on an approaching secretary with an armfull of scripts. But when the woman is soon revealed to be Reiner’s administrative assistant, now sporting a fresh lump on her forehead, Dickie is still only concerned with his audition. Craig Bierko (The Long Kiss Goodnight) plays George, the smarmy SUV-driving, opportunist dad who sells out his wife and two kids for Dickie’s ridiculous scheme. Bierko, who resembles alleged murderer Scott Peterson during his mustache and goatee phase, plays the part for all of its sour American dream meaning, stealing every scene he’s in. In some ways, George is a silent thematic link in the movie. The fact that his burgeoning adultery coincides with Dickie’s moving in, merits more plot attention than the audience gets. If this were a Marx Brothers movie or even a Bugs Bunny cartoon, there’d be plenty of jibes and interaction between our underdog hero and the dastardly dad. But here the sub-plot is squandered as perhaps too demanding a challenge for Dickie/Spade to attempt. For all of Dickie’s self-confusion, he’s the one who put any obstacles in his path. With twenty grand, Dickie effectively buys his way into the American dream when he finds a guy who’s bored enough with his family to sell them off. The innocent gambols Dickie instigates with the family’s young son and daughter represents the crux of the movie, and confirms the film’s PG-13 rating as Dickie goes about ruining furniture, breaking toys and testing the
Want my autograph? limits of social propriety in the context of a “normal family.” Director Sam Weisman (The Out-OfTowners) never reels in his audience because he’s never demanding enough with his subject. There’s a constant sense that Dickie Roberts is such a mediocre loser that he can’t even embrace the adequate depth of his misery. Spade could probably turn in a suitable comedic performance if he were pushed beyond the tight confines of his comfort zone as a lazy man’s joke-teller. People still entreat Dickie Roberts to repeat the silly phrase that made him famous on television. But “It’s Nucking Futs” doesn’t exactly measure up to Homer Simpson’s “Doh!” It does, however demonstrate the level of hack writing Spade and his writing partner Fred Wolf put into this forgettable disaster. David Spade showed promise as a straight man when paired with the late Chris Farley (Tommy Boy), but without a comic fall guy, the Saturday Night Live refugee is living a little too close to the defeated aspect of his Dickie Roberts character. Rated PG-13 95 mins. MTW

Those Crazy Brazilians Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Makawao Union Church Community Hall Carioca – Eclectic, Upbeat, Brilliant Brazilian Music Carioca played Maui last year for the first time and returns to give us some more Brazilian flavor. He is a brilliant multi-instrumentalist from Rio who will dazzle you with his fascinating music. His style is rooted in classical Brazilian guitar, and he also plays 6, 8, and 12-string guitar, sitar, bass, synthesizer, kalimba, Laotian bamboo flute, and a wide array of those crazy Brazilian percussion instruments. Each of his eight albums explores a different facet of his musical interest and ability – from chamber music fused with jazz to the African percussion of Northern Brazil to the rhythms of the Amazon. He sings a little in English, but his voice is so beautiful that the language doesn’t matter. His exciting live performance captivates and mesmerizes. Land Reclassification Public Hearing - 9:30 a.m. Thu & Fri, at the Wailea Marriott Jade/Plumeria Room. The petition is for 3 separate parcels to be reclassified to urban use. One of about 38 acres is along the Old Haleakala Highway adjacent to the Big Kmart and Costco properties. The other two are the sugar cane fields between the Hana Highway and Puunene Avenue, south of the Maui Marketplace and Wal-Mart/Home Depot commercial developments.
JAWBREAKER “DEAR YOU” For hardcore fans Dear You does not come highly touted. It is very well produced. It does consist of very radio friendly pop music. But most of all it is also very out-of-print (Blackball Records will be rereleasing it very soon). Jawbreaker stands as a benchmark for the emo music coming out today. Blake Schwarzenbach wrote eloquently poetic lyrics and instilled a very raw, gravel-hoarse voice to belt them out. As a trio they put together a tight mixture of pop melody with surreal, awkward quirks strung throughout. The influence of their style is felt today when listening to Chino of The Deftones and his style of awkward melodies. Why is Dear You a better Jawbreaker record than 24 Hour Revenge Therapy or Bivouac? Because it’s the most solidly written and the most consistently excellent record of this now sorely missed band’s short career. —Geffen/Blackball Records [GANNON GILMORE]
VARIOUS ARTISTS "BAD SCENE, EVERYONE'S FAULT: A TRIBUTE TO JAWBREAKER" I want to emphasize that this album is not terrible. Really. The bands do a good job of matching their favorite songs tune for tune but lack Jawbreaker's grace. Jawbreaker had dirty distortion and awkward drums and slightly off-key bass—and it worked. This album lacks all that—and it shows. But I do love the techno-danceable version of "Boxcar" and Duvall's fifties lullaby version of "Busy". —Dying Wish Records [GANNON GILMORE]
MICHAEL FRANTI AND SPEARHEAD “EVERYONE DESERVES MUSIC” This is perhaps Franti’s best album in an accomplished career. Everyone Deserves Music’s 12 fully realized songs covers all of his diverse influences, including hip-hop, rock, punk, reggae and electronica. The shimmering opening chords of the personal manifesto “What I Be” captivate the listener from the very beginning. “We Don’t Stop” is a real funky joint featuring the distinctive rhyming of the Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Franti’s rants. “Love Invincible” and “Love Why Did You Go Away” reveal an alluring sensual voice and evoke Curtis Mayfield. Two versions of the San Francisco Peace Rally standard, “Bomb the World,” stand out—one is the mellow version and the other is heavy on the drums and bass. The chorus has already become famous with Franti singing, “You can bomb the world to pieces but you can’t bomb it into peace.” —Imusic [JOE GATTO]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “SAMBA BOSSA NOVA” Brazilian music is some of the world’s richest and most diverse. Most of the artists are not well known in the U.S., but the beauty and spirit of the music transcends language barriers. Putumayo’s series of Brazilian compilations is a great place to get started. Samba Bossa Nova highlights various genres—younger, as well as more established but not mainstream musicians. Music is a family affair in Brazil and the groups of the children of famous Brazilians like Tom Jobim and Caetano Veloso are included here, carrying on their fathers’ deep tradition. Some of the brightest voices in contemporary Brazilian music belong to women like Rita Ribeiro, Rosa Passos, Jussara Silveira and Eleite Negreiros, and they all shine here. Jorge Aragao’s funky soulful samba tune “Preto, Cor Preto” stands out in particular. Heavy on percussion, tropical swing and steeped in soul, this CD is perfect for Maui. —Putumayo World Music [JOE GATTO]
VARIOUS ARTISTS "PUNK ROCK STRIKE: VOLUME THREE" Every summer Springman Records releases a comp CD devoted to unsigned bands and sells them for a dollar through their mail order catalog. This is a collection of the first three. That's three CD's worth of Punk Rock Music for $6. I miss labels that used to do this sort of thing. So I’m at 505 Front Street in Lahaina the other night when a woman walked up to the bar and slapped down a $100 bill. “Just keep my drink full,” she told the bartender. “And when I’m done, you can keep the change.” What are the odds? Is it possible she could put in a twentydrinks-in-three-hours bar shift? Will she order a $100 shot of Louis XIII? As it turned out, she chalked up a moderate $48 and the bartender walked away with a hefty gratuity and finally, a positive tourist tipping story. Meanwhile, in the corner, two gentlemen, mullet and sleeveless tee adorned, began the worst pool game ever played. We watched in silent disbelief as they drunkenly and repeatedly called out simple shots, then missed the shots. All this while being cheered on by some blonde floozy this guy described as displaying “not so much age, as mileage.” It was almost too painful to watch. Yet, we couldn’t tear our eyes away from the debacle. The image of the pool game from hell still fresh in my mind, my friend Jen and I headed down the street looking for a house party. Having Jen ride on the handlebars of my bike made us feel like the “Little Rascals,” giggling furiously and narrowly escaping neighborhood dogs, haphazardly dodging parked cars and pedestrians. Getting there was easy enough, except we couldn’t find it at first. We first stopped at one house with a bunch of balloons tied to the mailbox. Jen talked to the people there, but then a friend on a motorcycle rode by and told us we had the wrong house. So Jen ditched me to ride bitch with our motorcycle friend, leaving me to follow behind. The house was really nice, once I found it. Maybe 15 people were there, about half under the Viking hull ceilings inside and the rest milling about on the back deck. The first thing I noticed was that empty beer bottles greatly outnumbered partygoers. And, of course, the place was a sausage fest--the usual case for parties on Maui. Volt was playing in the living room. They played a rousing set of alternative music covers, switching lead vocals between Clark, the guitarist, and Joe, the drummer. The music was good, but more suitable to a larger crowd than this particular evening. Nonetheless, Jen and I scoped the scene outside. Apparently, we had just missed the Shelley Buck Show. But the Howard Ahia band was on next. We wondered how this feat would be accomplished since Howard had already thrashed Shelley Buck’s tambourine in a drunken fit and was now bouncing like a ping-pong ball from wall to wall. But like all good rock stars, he played well despite his animalistic tendencies. The vibe picked up somewhat with the arrival of a large clan of females. We admired their highly-underrated style of the “peg and roll” denim shorts and immediately adjusted our fashion accordingly. The crowd joined in a sing-a-long to “Hot for Teacher” and we resumed our consumption of Coors Light on the deck’s engulfing couch. But not for long. Soon our entourage, now including our friends Dan and Keith, headed back to the Bamboo Bar and Grill for a little unnecessary last call action. There we found, in the following order: unbearably sticky heat, a mysterious cocktail called “The Blue Orgasm” and some lone jerk apparently in the throes of some third world mating ritual yelling out “Hey, you have nice tits!” Inspired by Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love”, Jen started a raucous air guitar performance holding her leg in one hand, Bushmills and water in the other. Dan and I discussed the wellknown “Bend Over” tactic girls use occasionally to stun and silence males, as one khaki Banana Republic bottom was disturbingly pointed in our direction for an extended period of time. So then the “nice tits” guy came over to our table in his forlorn quest for love in Jen’s direction. Keith tried out the subtle “What’s For Dinner?” diversion. This is a useful ploy for scaring off baggers. It entails shouting a random question from across the room at the potential victim in hopes of engaging in a conversation that obviously does not involve the bar predator. It isn’t very discreet, but it works. The evening ended with Jen doing a pole dance, which was great, except she didn’t have a pole. A good time was had by all. MTW
