HITTING THE BOTTLE

STILL MISSING

I don't know if you were making up that bit about the man throwing the beer bottle full of vomit at the woman's windshield or whether it was joke that the woman wanted to party with the jerk, either way, it's so typical of women to be attracted to such a jerk (“Eh Brah: Your tales from the road,” Aug. 28). While women always tell us they want a guy with a good sense of humor, a guy who's sensitive and a “good listener” they always end with the guy who throws vomit. Just look at Laura Bush. I don't think this is the least bit funny. I'm lonely. --Writer wished to be billed as “The Last Good Man”

You MIGHT have ATTEMPTED to be tasteful, respectful or anything other than INCONSIDERATE, RUDE, HURTFUL, DISTASTEFUL, PIG HEADED, DISRESPECTFUL and DISGUSTING in your "Best Place to Disappear From" portion of your Best of Maui Issue (July 17, 2003). Torey Newlin has been my best friend for 12 years. Your crewed joke about the "brown acid" was NOT taken lightly. I can only hope that when your friends and family disappear or die in some unfortunate manner, that some asshole writer with nothing better to report on rips your still bleeding heart out and stomps on it. Perhaps you should have added another column entitled, best place to stay the fuck away from!!...An island venue where no re-entry rules are more important than the lives and safety of the people at the show. In conclusion, you should watch your drinks. Karma like yours and that of your writers (JR aka: FUCK HEAD) won't treat you well in times of need. Fuck you very much!! --Jessica Devine

“Name Withheld By Request” (Letters, Aug. 28) seems to grasp the fact that computer porn filters not only block smut but also non-objectionable material that only refer to explicit or controversial content. But “Name Withheld” obviously misses the greater point: many porn filters are created by companies with strong ties to Christian fundamentalists. Perhaps by happenstance or perhaps not, these filters have denied schoolchildren access to sites that Christian fundamentalists object to (Planned Parenthood immediately springs to mind), but which might legitimately be helpful to, say, an eighth grader doing research for a health class. Meanwhile, perhaps by happenstance or perhaps not, the filters have not stopped access to graphic content on sites run by darlings of the Right (the National Rifle Association immediately spring to mind). That’s not to say the NRA has nothing of value to scholars, but it is curious—and frightening to anyone who opposes censorship and Big Brotherism. --Todd Mathews, Lahaina

The Editor Responds: We’re very sorry you feel that way, and are sorry that Torey Newlin is still missing, but our best of entry was a light-hearted feature that followed a far more rigorous investigation of his disappearance (“Missing on Maui,” Jan. 16, 2003).

ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the Lahaina Chevron employee who works the late night shift. I always get gas there after I get off of work. Since I work in a restaurant, it is usually late. Last Wednesday I happened to drive away with my wallet on the roof of my car. By the time I realized what happened I was already in Paia. I called Chevron and asked the guy if anyone had turned it in. Of course, no one had. The dread of replacing the cards in my lost wallet was nothing compared to the thought of working for free my last three shifts. Yes, that's right--I had three nights worth of cash tips in my wallet. I stopped by Chevron the next day just in case... and was amazed to find out that after the employee closed the station for the night, he went out on his bike looking for my wallet. He found it and returned it to me with nothing missing! I gave him a huge hug, tons of thanks and a $100 bill. Thank you again for being an honest person. You really helped me out. This guy deserves a Bud Light radio song written about him, all right! This one's for you mister wallet finder with tons of aloha... --Grateful

War Without End State officials are still pushing for a bigger Kahului Airport

There’s a simple, short rule that people who live near commercial airports learn fairly quickly. It doesn’t matter where the airport is or how many gates it has. The rule is, now and forever, that airports expand. For the last couple of years Maui residents have walked around pretty content that they killed any future expansion of Kahului Airport. Sure, it took a couple decades and a lot of expensive litigation and a mobilized populace to get the monster beaten back, but it was beaten back. The Maui County Planning Commission discussed terminal expansion on Sept. 9, but that had nothing to do with increasing flights or bringing in big international airliners, right? Unlike the last fight, the push to expand the airport isn’t coming from county officials. With little subtlety and lots of contempt for the legions of Maui residents opposed to more flights into Kahului, it is Governor Linda Lingle’s administration that’s laying the groundwork to start a new airport war. It started a couple months ago, when state Department of Transportation Director Rodney Haraga told Kihei and Lahaina residents that, “in the interests of safety,” the Kahului runway ought to be lengthened to about 9,000 feet. Then on Sept. 4, Office of State Planning Director Theodore Liu appeared at a state Land Use Commission hearing to say a proposed development in Kahului was infringing on land that “would need to be clear of buildings if the runway is extended.” There’s no question the impetus for this comes from Lingle. After all, she was airport expansion’s biggest booster when she was Maui County Mayor in the 1990s. Lingle’s rallying cry then, as now, was economic growth. Maui needs a bigger airport so it will get the big 747s and 777s carrying lots of international tourists. Maui needs a bigger airport so it

doesn’t get left behind. Maui needs a bigger airport to have safer flights. Of course, all those arguments are every bit as specious as they were five, 10 years ago. Maui is growing—just look at all the pretty traffic jams commuters have to deal with every day. Maui and Kauai have more tourists than the Big Island or Oahu. Even the old, discredited Airport Environmental Impact Statement from the old fight predicted a significant increase in Maui tourism irrespective of airport expansion. As far as airliner safety is concerned, this was always a bogus issue. Sure, it’s true that current aircraft departing the airport have to restrict their weight to meet safety margins. But it’s also true that years ago the Department of Transportation’s Airport Planning Division’s own studies showed the bigger airliners Lingle and company wanted would also have to restrict their take-off weights— even when departing from a 9,600-foot runway. Same old platitudes… same old criticisms. Bigger airports produce more noise, toxic air pollution and traffic, and Kahului would be no different. But here on Maui, there’s another, possibly more insidious threat, and that is greater exposure to invasive biological species. “The number one Sierra Club concern about airport expansion has always been alien species detection and interdiction,” said Daniel Grantham, chair of the Maui chapter of the Sierra Club. “We’re very good about stopping plants and animals from going to the mainland, but not coming to the island.” Of course, airport proponents said they completely agreed with the need to expand invasive species detection. Haleakala National Park is just a few miles from the airport, after all. Of course, their solution was—surprise!—an expanded Kahului Airport, complete with all-new detection and interdiction technology. “The expansion will be pushed eventually,” said Maui Tomorrow vice president Lucienne de Naie. “Maybe not in a year, but this will start again.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, SEPT. 1 Finally, we’ve got some good news: the condition of Casey Strom Nies—the guy who allegedly went a little nuts with a samurai sword in a Kihei Longs Drug Store—has been upgraded to Stable, following his getting shot by police in the pelvis. No word on whether he ever got the cigarettes that spurred him to start slashing at people while waiting in line… Just as quickly, the mighty Hurricane Jimena gets downgraded to a wimpy tropical storm, then blows out entirely. So what happened to all the great waves those “geniuses” at the National Weather Service promised? Anyone? To which congressman do I send my expletive-laden missive?

TUESDAY, SEPT. 2 Only on Maui could the County Council force itself into a “lose-lose” situation over… chickens. At the hearing today they talked up banning roosters from residential areas during its council hearing. Locals outraged at being woken up in the early morning hours spoke for a total residential ban, while Colonel Sanders gave the rebuttal… Hawaiians like the adoptees, so says a new U.S. Census Bureau report. One out of every 35 Hawaiian children under the age of 18 is adopted—a rate of 2.9 percent. The national average is 2.5 percent. Woohoo! Go Hawaii! Down with parents!… You know it was a slow news day when Maui News reported on page A3 that a washing machine and car battery

had been located in a Puunene recycling bin. When will you people learn? Recycling is a serious need on a small island like Maui. Please remember that old washing machines and car batteries go into the OCEAN, not the recycling bins. Maybe old volcanoes, but not recycling bins. Barbarians.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 3 Word breaks out that actress/model/total babe Cameron Diaz broke her nose during a surfing accident on our island over Labor Day weekend. Diaz also turned 31 this weekend. Now that’s how to spend your birthday on Maui—getting your nose bandaged up. I just told all this to a friend of mine this, and she got all excited and said that means Justin Timberlake is on the island. Wow. No, really, I mean that. Actually, when I say “wow,” I really mean “who cares.”… You had to know the Maui News would be all over this one: A big police sting in Lahaina netted 10 arrests. The best apparently came from a tip in our own Best of Maui Issue (July 17, 2003). That’s when we informed you--the hip, consuming public-that the seawall next to Bubba’s is best place to buy fake marijuana, known on the street as cuckoos. So on Aug. 28 the 5-0 goes to the sea wall next to Bubba’s and busts some dude for selling cuckoos. But this dude is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill cuckoo dealer. At first everything’s cool, but then he hops on his trusty moped and tries to escape. This spurs the cops to chase him down Cops style, with one officer tackling the fool. So now the dude, who up till then was only in trouble for pawning fake grass off to rubes, is now cooling his

heels in the slammer and looking at additional charges of “resisting arrest.” Yeah, resisting. Tackling him took real skill. Some of them mopeds can really get going, like as much as 10, 15 miles per hour on the open road.

Did you wake up this morning with the feeling that this wonderful world of ours had just entered a new, golden age? I know I did. Here’s why, courtesy of the newest issue of Maui Weekly: “The makers of SPAM have released a limited edition SPAM Hawaii Collector’s Edition label.” One side of the can

All kidding about tossing old washing machines in the ocean aside, while walking down Front St. in Lahaina today I couldn’t help but notice a Norwegian cruise ship silently float at anchor, looking all Love Boaty while it nosed south, then north, then south again. The thing wasn’t hard to see, being pretty much as big as Lanai. In one of those funny little coincidences that make life nauseating, Maui News reports today that Norwegian plans to send four liners into Hawaiian waters next year. According to the paper, it’s all part of an “ambitions plan aimed at doubling the islands’ share of the worldwide cruise industry market.” Completely missing from the story was any hint at how rotten news this truly is. And I’m not just talking about the vast influx of Texas yahoos and Alabama yokels. According to the Surfrider Foundation, an average-sized 3,000 passenger cruise ship will generate the following during a one-week voyage: “1 million gallons of ‘gray water,’ 210,000 gallons of sewage, 25,000 gallons of oily bilge water, over 100 gallons of hazardous or toxic waste, 50 tons of garbage and solid waste” and, incredibly, “diesel exhaust emissions equivalent to thousands of automobiles.” Yeah! Get me some!

will show the always-popular hula dolls in grass skirts while the other has a recipe for SPAM musubi. Clearly, Hormel has finally recognized how special we truly are. Did you know Hawaiians consume more SPAM per capita than any other state in the Union? That’s because SPAM and Hawaii go way back, to an unholy alliance born in those From Here to Eternity days before the War, when men were men and Grade A beef was practically unknown. All that was left was a hop, step and Pearl Harbor bombing later, and now everyone on the islands fries up canned SPAM and mixes it with just about everything: rice, eggs, seaweed, Coffeemate non-dairy creamer. SPAM—is there anything it can’t do?

Time To Get Real In Iraq Iraqi Resisters are Patriots Nearly 70 percent of Americans tell Newsweek that “the United States will be bogged down in [Iraq] for years without achieving its goals.” Yet 61 percent tell the same poll that invading Iraq was the right thing to do. The reason for this weird disconnect: people think that we’re in Iraq to spread democracy and rebuild the Middle East. They think we’re The Good Guys. But the longer we keep patting ourselves on the back, the more we tell ourselves that the Iraqi resistance is a bunch of evil freedom-haters, the deeper we’ll sink into this quagmire. It’s time to get real. In war, the side that most accurately sizes up the situation ultimately prevails. In this war in Iraq, our leaders thought the fall of Baghdad meant the end of the conflict. “Mission accomplished,” as the banner behind George W. Bush read on the aircraft carrier. But Saddam understood the truth: the war began with the occupation. Guerilla warfare offered the only way for Iraq’s tiny, poorly armed military to resist the U.S. The Baath Party planned to provoke U.S. occupation forces into mistreating the population. It worked. Random bombings and sniper hits have made the American occupiers jittery and paranoid. They’ve withdrawn into fortified cantonments where they’ve cut off contact with civilians. Their ignorance causes them to offend Iraqi cultural and religious sensibilities. Even better, from Saddam’s perspective, U.S. troops push people around: shooting unarmed motorists, stealing their money and jewelry at roadblocks, breaking into houses in the middle of the night, manhandling wives and daughters, putting bags over men’s heads and carrying them off to God knows where for who knows how long. “U.S. troops put their boots on the back of men’s heads as they lay face down, forcing their foreheads to the ground,” the Associated Press’ Scheherezade Faramarzi writes about the procedure used by U.S. troops during sweeps. “There is no greater humiliations because Islam forbids putting the forehead on the ground except in prayer.” Amnesty International says the U.S. subjects Iraqi prisoners to “cruel, inhuman or degrading” conditions. In Iraq, we are the bad guys. What about the “terrorists” who bombed the U.N. headquarters and Jordanian embassy in Baghdad, who sabotage oil and water pipelines, who use rifles and rocket-propelled grenades and remote-controlled mines to kill our soldiers? Aren’t these “killers” evil, “killing people who just want to help,” as another AP writer puts it? In short: no. The ad hoc Iraqi resistance is comprised of indigenous fighters ranging from secular ex-Republican Guards to

radical Islamist Shiites, as well as foreign Arab volunteers waging the same brand of comeone-come-all jihad that the mujahedeen fought against Soviet occupation forces in Afghanistan. While one can dismiss foreign jihadis as naïve adventurers, honest Americans should call native Iraqi resistance fighters by a more fitting name: Iraqi patriots. I collect propaganda posters. One of my favorites, from World War II, depicts a strapping young SS officer holding a smiling local kid in his arms. “Trust the German soldier,” the caption exhorts citizens of occupied France. But when liberation came in 1945, Frenchmen who had obeyed that poster were shot as collaborators. The men and women who resisted--the “terrorists” who shot German soldiers, cut phone lines and bombed trains--received medals and pensions. Invaders always say that they come as liberators, but it’s almost never true. Whether you live in Paris or Baghdad or New York, you’re expected to know that, and to act accordingly. “We want deeds, not words,” says Abu Mohammad, a retired teacher about our inability (unwillingness?) to restore basic services to the city of Baghdad. Here are our deeds: Talking about democracy as we cancel elections. Guarding the oil ministry building while museums are sacked.. Exporting Iraqi oil to Turkey as Iraqis suffer fuel and power shortages. Iraq’s natural resources are being raped. Its people are being murdered. Yet it’s the patriotic Iraqi resistance, which is trying to stop these outrages by throwing out the perpetrators of an illegal war of aggression, that the Bush Administration dares call “terrorists.” On July 5 a bomb killed seven recruits for a U.S.-trained Iraqi police force in Ramadi. U.S. occupation administrator Paul Bremer deplored the murder of “innocent Iraqis.” Cops who work for a foreign army of occupation are not innocent. They are collaborators. Traitors. They had it coming. Under George W. Bush, truth and justice are no longer the American way. The U.S. occupation of Iraq is misguided, evil and doomed to failure. The sooner we accept this difficult truth, the sooner we decide to stop being the bad guys, the sooner we’ll withdraw our troops. The bloodshed may continue after we leave-and we’ll be partly to blame for that. But until we pull out, the carnage is all ours. Sami Tuma’s brother was shot to death when he drove past a U.S. military checkpoint. (The psychotic U.S. military policy in Iraq, despite countless killings of innocent civilians and at least five reporters to date, is not to warn victims before opening fire.) “It is simple,” says Tuma. “If someone kills your son, wife or brother without any reason but only that they happen to be walking or driving in the street, what you will do? You retaliate.” It’s what I’d do. It’s probably what you’d do too. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US In August, St. Louis, Mo., school board member Rochell Moore sent Mayor Francis Slay an open letter, criticizing his school-closing management reforms and advising him that because of his obstinacy, she had placed a curse on him. According to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Moore's curse was modeled after Deuteronomy 28:21, in which Moses told the Israelites what would happen if they strayed from God, e.g., "The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto Francis Slay ..." (When a former city comptroller later told reporters he thought Moore had "mental problems," Moore allegedly threatened to kill him.)

MORE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT The 2003 valedictorian of Alcee Fortier Senior High School in New Orleans failed (for the fifth time) the state's mandatory exit exam, and she cannot graduate until she passes (August). And the district attorney of Watauga County, N.C., frustrated at the light sentences judges hand down for methamphetamine producers, announced that he will begin to charge defendants instead (via a recent anti-terrorism law) with manufacturing a "nuclear or chemical weapon" (August).

Nine Cool Things About Life Fest Maui 1. The whole thing takes place at Wailea. The press release actually says “the Wailea Resort,” which is really confusing. What they mean is that it takes place at the Renaissance Wailea Resort (SP), the Wailea Marriott, the Grand Wailea, the Four Seasons Resort Wailea—all the swankiest joints down there. So while you’re there you can also take advantage of the gorgeous beaches and the pristine water. There’s going be a “canoe regatta challenge.” And a Feldenkrais body movement clinic for golf and tennis players. Check out the good and healthy food and wine tasting, including a “Life Feast Charity Benefit Dinner” where you can “gather under the stars in the name of good food that is good for you.” And event proceeds will benefit “a local charity.” Sign me up! 2. Richard Chamberlain will walk in the Life Fest Maui 5k Celebrity Power Walk. This is one of the highlights, and the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. The run takes place Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 a.m., and will thread through resort. And you get to run with Richard Chamberlain. Richard Chamberlain, people! You know, the star of The Thorn Birds! And Shogun! Dr. Kildare! The 69-year-old guy who just came out of the closet, which is interesting because it’s roughly the same time that his movie career kinda withered away. Yeah, that Richard Chamberlain. Guy lives on Oahu and he runs. Who knew? 3. Macrobiotics. If it works for Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s gotta work for the rest of us, right? This is where you eat whole foods—you know, things like whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. Anyway, there will be an hour-long lecture on it. 4. They’re going to do Yoga. And tai chi, qigong and pilates. “Tai chi is an important element in a wellness program,” said Kurt Miyajima, who will teach on the beach at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Sunday at 7 a.m. “Tai chi promotes longevity, optimum circulation,

Life! In festival form! and a higher quality of life--more vibrant and energetic. I don’t just teach the forms, but how this affects your whole body, tones muscles and organs, and is truly an internal art.” 5. Lomi Lomi. Dr. Maka`ala Yates, an authority from the Hawaiian Healing Institute, will give a presentation on Lomi Lomi. It’s an ancient Hawaiian healing massage used in old times to ease indigestion and other ailments. It’s basically a total healing experience. 6. They’ll talk drugs. Preventative health expert Dr. Julian Whitaker will talk about the seedy world of the Federal Drug Administration and the big billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. Later Whitaker will golf the award-winning Wailea Blue Course.

the quiet revolutionary DJ DAN RETURNS TO MAUI

It’s been about 10 years since DJ Dan played on Maui. Back then, Dan put on a huge party right at the edge of the cliff at Nakalele Point. It was like most big parties—lots of grooving fans, tons of chicks, people drinking, drugs here and there. Many who were there still talk about the dude, high on who knows what, who got naked, ran around, accosted some girls, got beat up by some guys, then fell off the cliff and died. DJ Dan was still in his early years back then. He was playing his aggressive techno music, but he wasn’t yet at the top of his game, not yet considered the master of the signature West Coast house sound, which he helped found. But now DJ Dan is coming back to Maui. On Friday, Sept. 19, Dan will play at Casanova in Makawao to promote the release of a new mix album. “I’m a DJ and I don’t know where he gets his music,” said Oahu-based Daniel Ward, aka Daniel J, who will also appear at Casanova with Dan. “His records are great. There are only so many Djs that get to tour the world, and he’s one of them. He’s got that presence and energy that are popular.” Ward isn’t alone in his praise. Virtually everyone who’s ever written about DJ Dan in the last year has described him as being “called ‘America’s most beloved DJ’ by URB Magazine.” The descriptor is straight from Dan’s official bio, put out by Moonshine Records. It’s such a tempting quote I just used it myself. Yet Dan is also a complex figure. Though an open homosexual, Dan never really connected with the gay club circuit. He has millions of fans around the world, yet he is personally shy and reserved. Indeed, DJ Dan probably has the largest fol-

lowing of any DJ anywhere in the world. There is so much demand for him to DJ parties that he’s booked through the end of the year. When he leaves the Hawaiian islands, he’ll tour Victoria, Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Montreal, Boston, New York, Miami, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Phoenix, Dallas, Santa Barbara, Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto, Vermont and a few other places he couldn’t remember when I asked him. “Ever day is action packed,” DJ Dan said. “But it’s hard to slow down, because when I do I don’t know what to do with myself.” With so many tour stops, it’s hard to imagine Dan can consistently maintain high quality shows, yet his fans rarely seem disappointed. “I saw him in LA at an all ages New Year’s Eve party a couple years ago at the Coliseum,” said Oahu-based DJ G Spot, who’s also on the bill for Casanova on the 19th. “There were over 40,000 people there. It was the biggest music event in the U.S. He played on the main floor and he roared. There was so much energy there.” Ward agrees. “DJ Dan is one of my favorite Djs,” he said. “He makes me dance every time I see him. I last saw him in Miami at a winter music conference. He just blew doors.” Considering that words like “aggressive” and “energy” are constantly buzzing around Dan, his appearance and persona are anything but. Rave, club, whatever, he dresses casually, shirt and pants, usually with a baseball cap. He’s soft-spoken and very careful of his privacy. “He’s a real shy guy off the turntable,” said Ward. “But on it he’s a roaring lion. But there aren’t any crazy antics. It’s the music that makes the energy.” Dan was born Daniel Wherrett in Olympia, Washington in 1968 to a large family that included nine brothers and sisters. By all accounts the family was more or less happy, but in the last decade his father, mother, stepfather and one brother died. “For as many family members as I’ve lost, I

look at [success] as one more guardian angel looking after me, and I cannot tell you how much that is true,” Dan told writer Chris Sill two years ago. “I think in some ways it’s my duty to share my story and send a positive message, and as long as I continue to do that and have faith in that, it’s been great.” Though he was remixing his own tapes at age 14, Dan began early adulthood by studying fashion design, eventually graduating at the top of his class at Seattle’s famed Thomas Edison School of Design. Then in 1991, Dan attended his first rave. “Something flipped,” Dan said in his official biography. “I realized my true calling… The parties were so fresh, so colorful. There were no categories back then. Nobody came in with preconceived notions of what the music should be. Those were the moments that started the trends.” Interesting things, these raves. Imagine hundreds, maybe thousands of young people coming together simultaneously—in a warehouse, hall or even out in the middle of the desert—partying for hours on end, then dispersing entirely. It is not a concert or even a dance party. “Raves are subjective and interactive experiences, and each person’s experience is different,” is how the magazine Raver’s Digest puts it. “We go for the whole experience of raving. Everything from the drive up with homies, to seeing friends that we only get to see at parties, to meeting new people, to driving back with homies and the hundreds of other things that people do at raves which may or may not even have anything to do with the music at all.” So Dan moved to Los Angeles. There he and DJ Ron D Core began experimenting with something they called “funk fusion.” That’s just DJ Dan-speak for music that isn’t easy to categorize. According to the massive internet music database allmusic.com, the music has been variously described as “sensual, trippy, hypnotic, detached, nocturnal and party/celebratory.” Building his reputation as a rave DJ at the height of the rave era, by 1996, Dan started releasing a series of mix albums. So far, he has

eight out. His first, Loose Caboose, is generally considered a classic. As he released new albums, reviewers gushed even more. “While he is known primarily known as a house DJ, the disc definitely does not fall into the cheesy house style with diva vocals and whatnot,” wrote a reviewer of Dan’s 2000 album Another Late Night for almostcool.org. Two years later, reviewer Michael Schreiber described Dan’s Round Trip as exemplifying “straight-up funk-a-fied, disco-laden, chunky beat ass-shakin’ grooves.” When he’s not on tour, Dan still lives in LA, in a two story English Tudor home, though he often heads up to San Francisco. He splits his time between his music studio, which takes up the entire first floor of the house, and filling the rest with funky antique furniture. But these days it seems Dan spends precious little time at home. He tours the world regularly, playing gigs in Europe and South Africa on occasion. The parties are popular, sure, but according to Ward, they don’t bring in a lot of money. In his official bio, Dan says it all comes back to energy. “I got into this because I love how people unite on the dance floor, bringing in their own energy and excitement,” he said. “So, I never turn my back on the crowd.” As far as his enormous popularity is concerned, Dan says it’s because he can balance his own trademark sound with constant renovations. “I’ve been in the scene since 1991,” said DJ Dan. “I’ve remained myself through that time. I switch things up, but I still stay current. Fans know they’ll get a current sound but with something new. I’ve gained a lot of trust with people. That’s why I think I’m so popular.” The same URB issue that heaped so much praise on DJ Dan also contained the

admission, which shocked some industry observers, that DJ Dan is homosexual. While most of the media let it slide without comment, one exception was Out Smart Magazine, which had writer Chris Sill interview Dan in October, 2001. “I never thought that was a big deal,” said Dan. “Most of the people in the scene knew when they got into it that it was about diversity. Anyone open-minded enough to listen to electronica music is open-minded about homosexuality. So many other Djs are gay that it just isn’t a big deal.” But the article also contained the following intriguing exchange on what problems associated with playing “the gay circuit.” Dan’s answer was eloquent, yet simultaneously thoughtful and critical of the gay community. It is a surprisingly complex political reflection from a man known for little more than partying: “Out Smart: Sometimes it is frustrating playing in a gay club because you have to play a certain sound. The openness to new sounds has been lost, and in some ways I think the popularity of the gay circuit has something to do with it. What do you think of the whole circuit scene? “DJ Dan: I think the fact that many gay people can come together and do something like that is awesome. It’s a great opportunity to make a statement about how strong the gay scene is and to send out a message. The problem I have with [the circuit scene] is when I really take a look at it, they’re very self-abusive, which isn’t a very positive thing. It’s blatant drug use and sexual energy. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the gay or straight scene using drugs, everyone does. But it’s sad when you think about how hard gay men have to fight to make a statement for themselves. I think they should try to respect themselves more.”

DJ Dan will appear at Casanova, 1126 Makawao Rd., Friday, Sept. 19. For more information, go to www.double-ospot.com. MTW

Walk into Erik’s Seafood and Sushi and the first thing you see is a stuffed 500 lb Pacific Blue Marlin. That’s a pretty big fish. Further on are a couple of big-game fishing rods and reels, and pictures of salty Lahaina fishing boat captains with their prized catches. There are also mounted game fish of Hawaii plastering the walls. Several large saltwater tanks house rare tropical fish and eels. Reminiscent of restaurants you might find in fishing towns along the eastern seaboard, Erik’s isn’t your typical stuffy tourist restaurant. Erik’s is dedicated to the memory of founder Erik Jakobsen, famed Maui restaurateur. Currently run by Jakobsen’s son Christian, the restaurant moved to Lahaina in January after more than 20 years in Kahana. Christian, even-keeled as he coolly manages the business while also rolling sushi, says he has learned “the culinary art from all of the chefs that have been with the family over the years.” I asked Christian why he though his restaurant was unique. “Air-conditioned comfort, distinctively nautical atmosphere and free parking right in front,” he said, which though true wouldn’t have been my first answers. To me, what stands out most about Erik’s is the fresh fish. All of the local fish are bought straight from the fishing boats, as captains call in their catch before they even hit land. This ensures freshness. Two of the most popular are the Hawaiian Swordfish and Mahi Mahi. The day I went I sat at the sushi bar. To my right was Neal, a regular who’s eaten everything on the menu. Between oversized bites of his Unagi Dynamite Specialty Roll, he mentioned that he likes that “the staff treats you like family if you eat here with any sort of regularity.” To my left was Kimo, a professional surf instructor who appreciates the “fair prices.” He insisted the only thing he’d strong-arm is an amaebi, sweet shrimp. Then he gulped one down whole. Picking up the menu, the first thing I saw was a motto that should appear over every establishment’s door: “Take care of the customers or someone else will.” Erik’s takes pride in knowing most of their local patrons by name, contributing to the restaurant’s homey feel. Erik’s menu is enticing but not overwhelming. There is a healthy selection of appetizers, shellfish, and fresh island fish to choose from that could keep one satisfied for weeks. I started my meal with a recommendation: the French puff pastry, an Erik’s original. It’s a light, rich golden brown pastry

I guess that’s big stuffed with sautéed shrimp, tender scallops, mushrooms, topped with asparagus and a creamy dill sauce. I don’t particularly like asparagus, but these were so crisp and fresh and loaded with sauce that I was sold. Next I tried their “award winning” crab cakes. I don’t doubt this, though the exact nature of the award or selection committee is unknown. The crab is definitely deserving of some sort of accolade, if for presentation alone. Picture two plump cakes filled with cucumber and Maui onion naimasu, topped with bamboo-roasted tiger prawns covered in a tobiko aioli. Of course, I had to try one of the sushi rolls. For me, it was an old standby: the spicy tuna. Tightly rolled and flavorful with the perfect amount of kick, each bite makes the brow tingle, and you find yourself saying to the former enlisted army member behind the sushi bar: “Thank you, sir, may I have another.” Erik’s has a traditional selection of desserts, and a full wine and sake list to compliment each meal. They offer lunch and dinner, and can cater to private parties both large and small. Erik’s has been a regular for years at The Garden Party in Wailuku and The Taste of Lahaina. That’s Erik’s—pretty much everything from sushi rolls to monster 500-pound Marlins. Oh, and free parking in the back. Don’t forget the free parking in the back. MTW Erik’s Seafood and Sushi, located at 846 Wainee St. in the Old Lahaina Center. Open Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m to 4 p.m. for lunch and every night 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Half-priced sushi offered until midnight. 669-4806.

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY MARNIE MASUDA

Only the Ideal Sue Perry Loves Her Art I’m sitting with the artist Sue Perry in her sunny living room in Kula on a very bright morning. We’re looking out the window, which gives us a great view of the gardens she lovingly tends. We’re surrounded by her very pretty paintings of flowers and it’s all, well, really nice. “I’m a woman who loves to paint!” she gushes. The garden is a veritable riot of dahlias, sunflowers and protea. It is what inspires much of her impressionistic work. Perry paints in the plein air style, which is a French term for a relaxed, open-air look. A series of her Lahaina scenes will be featured on September 12 at the inaugural opening of the new Lahaina Galleries loca-

tion in a renovated vintage movie theater. Perry and her husband, Terry, first lived in Lahaina when they moved to Maui from California 30 years ago. “Back then, you could shoot a gun right down the middle of Front Street and not hit a soul,” she recalls. “They didn’t sell liquor or gas on Sundays and the fishermen would call the kids to bring their buckets to fill with akule and crab. Life was much more simple then.” Perry’s paintings evoke a sense of longing for those simpler times. In one piece, the houses and buildings of Front Street have been edited out completely. She chuckles a bit when I puzzle over the image. “Pretend you’re standing on the lanai at Bubba Gump’s, looking towards Ka’anapali,”

she says. That makes it a bit clearer. Perry is not your typical brooding or even eccentric artist. Her professional life began late, as she chose to raise her children and help her husband build his photo and sundries businesses. She says she never regrets patiently putting her family first. Her home is immaculate. Paintings are hung and spaced evenly on fresh white walls. There are a few perfectly placed Asian knickknacks and antiques, which reflect Perry’s decidedly east-meets-west sensibility. When I visit her in her studio, where she usually spends six hours a day, she’s working on a painting of the Lahaina Jodo Mission’s bell, her most recent of many Buddhist temple-inspired pieces. She seems so balanced, so I ask her what she thinks about the reclusive tortured souls who create art out there in the Big World—the view that art should express suffering. “I think it’s phony,” she says quickly. “You have to love your art! If you don’t love it, don’t do it!”

See Sue Perry’s work Sept. 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Lahaina Galleries, 828 Front Street and newly renovated 728 Front Street locations. For more information, call 6677795 or e-mail dava@lgimaui.com.

Sue also loves the “Blue Willow” china pattern. It depicts the Chinese legend of starcrossed lovers who transform themselves into birds, then fly off into eternity together. She collects the ubiquitous blue and white dishes, featuring them in a series of prim still-lifes. As Perry gives me a Reader’s Digest version of the “Blue Willow” tale, I’m reminded of the lovers and their complexities in Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” I ask her why she’s drawn to the pattern. “I really like blue-and-white,” she says. Perry’s style of impressionism is unique. She uses a palette knife to apply oil paint to canvas. This technique lends a densely textured quality to her art, along with a sense of energy and movement. But lately she’s been experimenting with pastels. When packing for a recent trip to Rarotonga she decided oil paints and paraphernalia were too humbug to pack, so she took a small set of pastels instead. She feels impressionism captures an artist’s emotion—the love for his or her subject—and can evoke a sense of longing in the beholder. She wants to invoke a feeling of, as she puts it, “I wish I were there” in the viewer. As Sue walks me through her gardens, which she often opens to Maui’s plein air painters, she talks about the perfect clarity of upcountry light. “Who would want to live anywhere else?” she asked. “This is the prettiest place on earth!” Perry has no need for the stimulation of cities: “They scare me!” Nor does she place symbolic implications in her work. “I’m not that deep!” she says laughing. Her work is just what she wants to see. But as we spoke she began examining one of her fading dahlias. “They don’t last forever, do they?” Her real flowers may wither and die, but there doesn’t ever seem to be even a single wilted blossom in any of her floral landscapes or still-lifes. She carefully prunes out the bad stuff, leaving only the ideal. MTW

Obsessive Compulsive Order Cage, Lohman and Rockwell Con Audiences Matchstick Men (★★★★) Nicolas Cage gives his best performance since Leaving Las Vegas as con man Roy Waller in this sophisticated movie about fatherly responsibility, self-imposed barriers and the possibilities of a well executed long con. Based on the book by Eric Garcia, Matchstick Men follows obsessive compulsive con man Roy and his encouraging

partner Frank Mercer (Sam Rockwell) as they go for a big money scam with the unexpected help of Roy’s recently discovered 14-year-old daughter Angela (Alison Lohman). The meticulous script by Nicholas and Ted Griffin is shaped by director Ridley Scott (Black Hawk Down) into a tugging mix of humor and drama that’s put on brilliant display in finely drawn

performances by Cage, Rockwell and Lohman. Alison Lohman continues to overwhelm audiences with her astonishing charm and emotional range following her Oscar-worthy performance in last year’s sleeper White Oleander. Roy Waller embraces his job as a con artist, or “Matchstick Man,” as a vocation that allows him to distance himself from other people and relationships, with the exception of his business partnership with Frank. Frank, on the other hand, is caught up in the excitement of the con. He loves conning people over the telephone with different accents and living a flashy lifestyle. But Roy is the more experienced of

Cage tics the two men, and has amassed a small fortune that he keeps between a safe deposit box and a hollow bulldog figurine in his house. The fact that he also keeps a gun hidden inside the statue is not lost on the intricate plot. Roy is a walking basket case of nervous tics and obsessive behaviors. He becomes ill when he’s exposed to the outdoors. So, when Roy accidentally knocks the black-market medication that controls his twitching, down the garbage disposal, all hell breaks loose. Unable to pull himself out of his manic machinations, Roy painstakingly wipes and cleanses every surface in his swimming pool appointed house until Frank, his partner in smalltime cons, arrives a few days later to snap him out of it. Frank quickly sets Roy up with a shrink (tactfully played by Bruce Altman), who presses the chain smoking bundle of nerves for an emotional link to his problem before giving him new meds. It’s isn’t long before Roy is pleading with Dr. Klein (Altman) to call his ex-wife on his behalf to inquire about the child that was two months along in her womb when he abandoned her. The world starts to look very different when Roy’s question of being a father is answered as soon as he meets his teenaged daughter Angela, who takes advantage of her summer vacation to get to know her criminal dad. Angela brings out Roy’s fatherly instincts even as she insists on him teaching her his con tricks. The poignant and kinetic moments of recognition and selfrealization between Cage and Lohman make up the nucleus of the movie and take the audience on a journey of discovery that is as poetic and natural as any human connection ever captured on film. The long con that Roy takes part in at Frank’s behest provides a crafty and surprising plot twist and emphasizes the movie’s less tangible emotional themes. In the end, Matchstick Men reveals itself to be a deceptively human movie about motivation and responsibility. That it allows the viewer to arrive at these ideas through their own personal attachments is a function of the brilliant ensemble efforts that make up the film. The chemistry between Nicolas Cage and Alison Lohman is a spectacular event to behold, and one that transcends the 23-year-old Lohman’s guileless ability to inculcate naturalness wherever she goes. Such pure inspiration will surely be a rewarding experience for audiences looking for more imagination beneath the well-crafted surface plot of a very entertaining movie. Rated PG-13 118 mins. MTW

Paia’s Acid… Monday, 7-10:30 p.m. at Jacque’s in Paia

…Jazz, that is! Jacque’s is not only a restaurant and sushi bar. And it’s not just a place to ogle beautiful international windsurfers either. On Monday nights, it is also a fabulous place to kick back under the stars on the deck outside, cast sidelong glances at the eye-candy AND listen to the north shore’s horded little musical secret. The inhouse acid jazz ensemble is comprised of Greg di Piazza on lead vocals and guitar, Tato on drums and Dion (formerly of Crazy Fingers) on bass guitar. Last Monday night, I also had to pleasure of witnessing a guest player, Dustin Hengl on muted trumpet. The sweet and sexy sounds this quartet created left me grinning from ear to ear, went oh-too-well with my glass of Merlot and suddenly quite phallic dessert cobbler.

Dario Campanile is a contemporary artist who was advised by two surrealist greats, Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dali. He will be present to talk story and probe the concepts of reality this Wednesday in Wailea.

VERBENA “LA MUSIC NEGRA” Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters produced this trio’s first outing, “In the Pink,” back in ’99. It was well received and I played the crap out of it. It’s been a while but worth the wait. Their sophomore effort is more of the same: kick-ass, dark, catchy as hell, grunge. Wait—make that sleek, sexy, stylish grunge—sort of Kurt Cobain gets a makeover by Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode from their ‘Ultra’ period. Tracks like “Way Out West” will cause your head to bang up and down. Moments like “Camellia” with its sorrowful countrytwinged vocals will put tears in your beer. The sound has been cleaned up a bit for this one, but it definitely retains a layer of grime. And I like it dirty. —Capitol Records 2003 [SPIKE FUQUA]

“THE DATSUNS” – V2 RECORDS 2002 Datsun, for you of little vehicular knowledge, was the former title of Nissan Motor Co., whose model 510 I had the displeasure of crashing into a field and rolling three times. We were headed to the river on senior skip day; you know, kegs, chicks, the works. This record would have been perfect that day, come to think of it. AC/DC was cranked on the boom box as it bounced off Jeff’s head over and over in the backseat whilst we helplessly rotated airborne. The Datsuns, from New Zealand, have that “down under rock” thing goin’ like say, Rose Tattoo, Angel City and the previously mentioned gods AC/DC. While most of the “garage band” trend (Vines, Strokes, Hives, blah, fuckin’, blah) were irritating, these guys could set a time machine for the summer of 1977 and fit seamlessly into rotation between Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” and Kiss’ “Detroit Rock City.” The guys all list their last names as Datsun, so there’s a Ramone point right there. By the way, after the crash we went to the E.R., got stitched up, popped some good pain meds and still made the party. Rock on! —V2 Records 2002 [SPIKE FUQUA]

YEAH YEAH YEAHS “Fever To Tell” Yeah, that whole retro rock thing got a lotta play this past year. But there were definitely some rising stars from that rubble of everything-soundsthe-same, contrived simplicity. The best thing about this art-punk trio, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is their lead singer, Karen O. The woman seethes with raw sexual power and she wails with reckless abandon. I don’t know if I want to BE her or if I want to…well, anyway, she’s great. From the hyper garage-punk rock of “Rich” and “Date With the Night” to the almost heartbreaking balladry of “Maps” and “Modern Romance,” she is fierce and unforgettable. She makes me think of PJ Harvey and Patti Smith, with the riot grrrl angst of Bikini Kill and the weird post-disco/art-deco of Blondie. —Interscope Records [SAM CAMPOS]

ATERCIOPELADOS “EVOLUCIÓN” Forget Shakira. Andrea Echeverri of Aterciopelados is the real voice of sophisticated, empowered, strong Latin women. Echeverri, vocalist-guitarist, and bassist Hector Buitrago form this acclaimed Colombian duo. Her voice is so beautiful, feminine and strong that it doesn’t matter what language she is singing in. “Evolución” is their latest greatest hits collection. An alternately ethereal and electric power pulses through the album, giving a taste of the band’s greatness to a new American audience. The pair has rooted their sound in traditional rhythms while deftly dipping it in some of today's most exciting genres. Each track on the album flows effortlessly into the next. Their last big hit “El Album” is present as well as old favorites: “El Estuche”, “Caribe Atómico” and the hard driving, “Baracunatana.” It's an intoxicating mix that's impossible to classify—and resist.—BMG Records [JOE GATTO]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “BAJOFONDO TANGO CLUB” We’re lucky to have so many Argentineans on Maui to make life more passionate. Tango is the sound of the streets of Buenos Aires and a deep expression of urban life. It can make people melancholy or nostalgic. Or dance, laugh and make love. “Bajofondo Tango Club” is the soundtrack for porteños of the new millennium—tango and electronica. This album’s 16 songs create a rich musical tapestry, equally irreverent and respectful of the traditional Tango. It paints a sonic landscape of life in a perennial state of unpredictability, sadness, anger and love. It won the award for Argentina’s Best Electronica Album of 2003 and is the perfect chillout CD to make you feel cool sitting in some hip Latin café or just at home. —Surco Records [JOE GATTO]

ARIES: Do something to kick the "I'm overworked” blues. Helping someone else continues to be a way to lift your own burdens. Your subconscious is working overtime. Find a nice rhythm to work with. Sing a song as you do hard labor. TAURUS: While you're out there having fun, make sure that you pace yourself. Too much of a good thing can be wonderful. Open your heart and open your mind. You may be too obsessed with your appearance. Natural beauty is better than died hair, tattoos or piercings. GEMINI: You like to “free-flow” with your thoughts. Lately your thoughts have been confined to family and domestic issues. Don't let the stress hurt you. First beautify your home, second is to invite people you like over for a creative workout. CANCER: Limitations seem heavier and more evident at this time. You're able to get a grip on what your goals are. Foreign travel and higher education opportunities may conflict with your local and neighborhood projects. Talk to a friend or sibling. LEO: Do you say one thing and do another? Are you truly practicing what you preach? Find practical and modest ways to sustain yourself. You may need to save up for that big party you've been planning. Perhaps you'll learn to be generous without being expensive. VIRGO: The last half of Virgo deals with education. Subjects like geography, agriculture, nutrition and physical education are ruled by Virgo. Try to avoid major purchases until Mercury goes direct on Sept. 20. Be patient with domestic challenges. LIBRA: Relationship issues are big, Thursday through Saturday. Secrets may be revealed to you over the weekend. Pay attention to symbols and dreams. Your intuition is sharp. Venus in your first house is making you look good. SCORPIO: You'll be focused on taking care of work and dealing with little details. Your social life flourishes especially on Sunday and Monday. The freedom to plan for the future and to be with friends is a good way to keep a positive flow in your week. SAGITTARIUS: You may need to buy a business suit or some type of work outfit. Career improvements are your number one priority. Be fair in spite of ego crushing situations. Guard your tongue when sharing stories at your workplace. CAPRICORN: Accept a little bit of "pushing the envelope". Conservative behavior is boring as well as inappropriate when you're passionate about a just cause. Don't use your current exuberance to bully others and blame them. State some positive ideas. AQUARIUS: You're caught between feasting and fasting, taking and giving, and a rock and a hard place. Cut your losses and move on to the next project. Set your sights on changes as the revolution revisits you with Uranus back in Aquarius. PISCES: The ultimate dreamer has a case of relaxed anxiety. The love vibe needs to be strong. You're ready to harmonize with that someone special. Saturday night through Monday, enjoy your local environment, write poetry and visit friends. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Agatha Christie 9/15/1890, Doug E. Fresh 9/17/66, Kimberly Williams 9/14/71 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

It helps to have connections. I know I do, or at least, I cavort with the people that do. Last weekend, hanging on the coattails of my friend Jen’s notoriety, I crashed a private party held at the lush, highly restricted, members-only Lahaina Yacht Club. Being the dive bar Betty that I am, I’ve always been somewhat envious of those with access to the exclusive LYC—not to mention intensely curious about what lay beyond those enigmatic saloon doors on Front Street. On a sweltering Sunday afternoon, Jen and I once again cruised on down the road via bicycle, toying dangerously with the rules of the road. You know, things like Do Not Laugh So Uncontrollably That You Cannot See Where You Are Going. Or the ever-popular Pay Attention To All Road Signs. How about Don’t Run Over Any Tourists? And perhaps, just to be on the safe side, Warm Up Your Bike Riding Skills In The Driveway First Before Venturing Out Onto The Street. Surprisingly enough, we—though not the rules—arrived intact to the private clubhouse. Of course we were sweating profusely. What—it was hot. Sweltering hot, remember? So we were sweaty. And young, apparently. Younger than the rest of the crowd by about 15 years. More ominously, we were also the only ones without drinks, so we took care of that immediately with the coldest (and complimentary too—Hurrah!) beer in the west. Which, considering that we’re about as west as you can get before hitting, what, the Philippines, was still pretty cold. Our throats now a bit less parched, we soon noticed all these signs on the tables: “All I want for my birthday is to play a little music with my friends… So how about coming down to the LYC from 1 to 5 in the afternoon Sunday Sept. 7 and helping me out. —Roscoe” Roscoe Wright is a highly acclaimed drummer who’s been on the Maui jazz circuit for a long time. He is also well connected. His friends are all of the most talented, accomplished musicians who play music—jazz and otherwise—on the island. Most have recorded several albums. Most play regular gigs all around Maui. Some have recently come back from touring on the mainland. All looked really happy to be at the LYC, “playing a little music” with each other. A Brazilian duo that frequently plays at Pacific’O on Saturdays, Anata and Bita, were performing with Mr. Birthday himself on drums, Gene Argell on keys and Doug White on bass guitar. Blues maestro Bobby Ingram was in the crowd. So was Mike Carroll of the Complex Cats and well-known drummer Michael Buono. And regal guitarist Sam Ahia. Jazz diva Kelly Covington was there, too. Roscoe was really excited to get her onstage next. “Lemme get some chicken in me first!” she said, laughing. Some people were dancing. One blonde woman in a suede fringed halter-top and cowboy hat danced with a very tall Hawaiian man. Another attractive couple in aloha attire swung each other around on the dance floor with glee. Then Rene Alonzo took over the keyboard in a thick Louisiana drawl. “Now we gonna sing a song about Saddam Hussein in the key of G, exactly like the Cocaine Blues,” he said. Then he launched into a rockin’ blues riff with a chorus that ended in “He likes camels too, and if you bend over, he’ll Saddam-ize you…” Later Kelly Covington joined Bobby Ingram in the most spectacular rendition of “What’s Goin’ On?” I’ve ever seen. After much jamming with musicians replacing musicians every couple of songs or so, a suspicious lull invaded the stage. Roscoe approached the microphone and said, “Where’d everybody go?” His eyes suddenly sparked with recognition. “Oh…I know…ooookaaay.” That’s when Kelly piped in. “They’re having a ‘safety meeting,’” she said. We all chuckled knowingly. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. I felt so incredibly lucky to witness all that I nearly cried. In fact, there were so many great musical moments and insider jokes shared between colleagues that I truly felt like an unworthy trespasser. Of course, I was an unworthy trespasser. But there was no way in hell I was going to leave that scene. Not for anything in the world.
