LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR NUDE CHURCH Regarding your August 7 “Picks” article entitled “More Sand in Your Butt”--allow me to firmly state my discontent regarding the use of my picture (absolutely stark naked!) without my permission next to commentary about Little Beach which I do not feel aligned with. First, people that frequent Little Beach understand that it is definitely NOT OKAY for anyone to be taking pictures of other people naked without their permission. If any of the regulars had caught you taking pictures, you would have been asked to get permission or leave the beach. Cameras have literally been taken away from people who refused to comply with this simple form of consideration and etiquette. Second, Little Beach on Sundays is NOT a “big crowd of strangers” gathering weekly because we “dream of being naked and famous.” In reality, LITTLE BEACH IS A CHURCH, filled with an ever-growing family of people (both conscious and unconscious) who come together to celebrate our spiritual connection to each other, to the land, to the drums and to the fire. What is happening on Little Beach on Sundays is an ancient form of spiritual worship that mirrors the traditions of ancient Hawaii (before it was stolen by greedy capitalists and zealous Christian missionaries). Third, the mere mention of alcohol or “drinks” in the same article is irresponsible. One of the biggest challenges we are attempting to address at Little Beach is dealing with drunken people who not only pollute their own bodies with this toxic substance, but who leave their alcoholic garbage all over the beach! Those of us who care about the area find ourselves week after week having to clean up after these unconscious people. If you want to write something about Little Beach in the future, and publish a

picture to go along with it, I suggest you get permission for your photographs and get your information from an accurate source. You have undermined and disrespected a very potent and powerful spiritual gathering of souls. Tiara Alana Morganna Kihei

GERMAN VOYEUR? I am not quite sure if I might have missed something in the most recent development of “the very real problems” Maui is facing, but I have the hardest time figuring out why Mr. Macy names “German Tourists” in one sentence with “crime, environmental degradation, and shortsighted development.” Sounds like paranoia to me. Maybe racism? Maybe even both? But isn’t one the result of the other? I sure would watch the man behind the curtains at the Macys’ residence. Gina Dunker (German) Lahaina The Editor Responds: Far be it from me to read too much into a letter writer’s motivation, but I’m pretty sure Macy’s line about the German Tourists was a joke. But we’ll put him under surveillance if you want. Just give us the word…

Hey you, the one with the little kids in the car. I bet you never even noticed me behind you. I was on the phone with the Maui Police Department all while you wove over the center line on the Mokulele Highway, back and forth, obviously polluted out of your mind. I can still see the small arms of the kids in the back seat reaching up now and then to hold on to the ceiling. I followed your little aging silver/grey hatchback all the way to the gated community in Wailea, where you disappeared before any patrol cars in the area could get there. I can’t forget you, which is ironic--I doubt you even REMEMBER that trip, possibly not even your whole intoxicated evening. But I did give your plate numbers to the police, though. So maybe one day when you drive your car and kids off the Pali into a nighttime sea, we’ll all have a really good idea of what happened. Not that that will do a damn thing to help. - Pull your head out, for chrissakes.

Hawaiian residents finally qualify for the World’s Most Beautiful Feet Contest Living in Hawaii subjects our feet to coral cuts, sand burns and hard calluses. We don’t often treat our feet with much care. On the mainland, people use lotions all the time, get biweekly pedicures and wear socks on a regular basis. But two Oahu residents have broken the Hawaiian stereotype of dirty, hard feet. They are finalists for the fourth annual “World’s Most Beautiful Feet Contest,” sponsored by the Teaneck, New Jerseybased websites Foot.com and Shoes.com. Their pigs are pictures of perfection. For the first time ever, two Hawaii residents have ashot at the grand prize trip to the Caribbean. Emily Gardner, 41, is an environmental lawyer from Honolulu. She came across the contest when she ordered a pair of Dr. Scholl’s shoes online. When her order came, she noticed contest information was enclosed. Toying with the idea for a while, she finally submitted photos of her feet. Not long after she got a phone call and learned she was a finalist. “My feet look nice,” Gardner said. “I have nice toes and a high arch. I have been told by several men, including my husband, that I have beautiful feet.” Before the contest, Gardner never painted her toes or even paid much attention to her dogs. But since becoming a finalist, she has received two pedicures and now paints her toenails. To Gardner this contest isn’t about the fame and fortune that comes along with winning the contest. She just wants to fulfill her dream of finally going on a honeymoon with her husband. If she wins, they will spend seven nights at a SuperClubs allinclusive Caribbean resort. “We never went on a honeymoon,” Gardner said. “We had a chance to buy a home or go on a honeymoon and we went for the home.” Unlike Gardner, Kailua resident and Beautiful Feet finalist Jennie Lee, 27, has dreamed of modeling ever since she was a little girl. “I always wanted to do some modeling, but I had no one to back me up,” Lee said. Little did she know that her fiancé TJ Swafford would be the one. Swafford and Lee were playing on the Internet one day and found out about the contest. She submitted a picture. A week later, Lee received a phone call at five in the morning informing her that she was a finalist. In an email, Swafford said he “double dog dared” her to enter the contest. It was a joke and dare at the same time. “Low and behold she actually made it

Amazing feet into the top ten finalists out of thousands and thousands,” Swafford wrote. “As voted by a panel of podiatrists, modeling pros and foot care specialists.” Since Lee’s 10 twinkling toes were posted on Shoes.com, she has actually received a contract for feet modeling. She said the gig could earn her from $125 to $140 an hour. Lee added that her feet could possibly be in future shoe ads, lotion ads, or even corn commercials. Lee is less interested in the grand prize of a trip to the Caribbean than Gardner. To Lee, the contest is all about the modeling portfolio. Sure, it will incorporate feet shots, but there will be headshots as well. Lee said portfolios are very expensive to put together. Votes are tallied daily on Shoes.com and Foot.com. Lee is picture #7 and Gardner is picture #8. Your email address is stored, so voting can only be done with one email address. The winner will be announced on September 22. One unlucky finalist will receive an award for the “Feet in Most Need of a Pedicure.” Foot.com is a treasure trove of feet-related information. Walking barefoot can cause plantar warts, which enters the feet through a cut, it says. The website also says two feet can be dissimilar and you need to buy shoes for the bigger one. Five percent of Americans have toenail problems. For more statistics about feet or just to vote in the contest, visit Foot.com or Shoes.com.

Woke up… Walked to work… Tried to forget awful, awful image of a very drunk gentleman calling himself “Captain Inferno”— dressed much as what you’d imagine someone named Captain Inferno would dress— roaming through Shark Pit in Lahaina yelling “I’m not going to that meat market! I’ve got my own market and my own meat!”

No clue… Slept late… Too depressed about this whole gouging thing… Wait, here’s a stack of faxes on my desk… Uh huh… boring… uh huh… Subway’s now serving breakfast… uh huh… Man with gun attacks teacher…uh huh…breakfast, eh?… The state honchos over on Oahu won’t give us our $1 million air ambulance which is already paid for, but they will offer to spend 60 times that amount for a new 600-bed prison in Puunene. Horror stories about how awful things are at the current Maui Community Correctional Center-three guys sleeping in cells meant for two and such—abound at today’s state House Finance Committee meeting on jail issues. But was I the only one creeped out by state Department of Public Safety Director John Peyton’s wish to build an “aesthetically attractive facility?” Oh, look Martha—over on the left: That must be the new jail! Isn’t it lovely, all gleaming and shiny in the sunlight. How nice that they planted those coconut trees. It’s so much more inviting than that ugly Home Depot across town.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 9 Gas prices. Yeah, still high. Way high. Higher even than the guy who sold me a fish sandwich today at lunch. Like it? Like getting raped by something called a “nozzle?” I don’t. And neither does Congressman Ed Case (D, Honolulu). “For decades we were all told that the reasons for our highest-in-the-country gas prices were the high cost of doing business in Hawaii, and high taxes, and high shipping costs, and high neighbor island transport costs, but now we know that none of that accounts for our outrageous pump prices,” Case wrote, who insists all those costs are really negligible. “The difference between actual cost and pump price is the most consistent highest profit margin to Chevron and the other refiners in the country, and the reason is very simple: they control the market.” Why do I feel like I just stepped into Casablanca? What, there’s price gouging going on here? I’m shocked!

Well, it’s Sept. 11, and that means commemorations, speeches, memories and the ever-popular reflections. And that means my old friend Congressman Ed Case is back with his take. “[T]errorism is real and immediate,” he wrote on one of the “lessons” given us by the hijackings and attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. “[I]t is not

But it was also really, really far away from Maui. People, we’ve got tsunami sirens along the highway! We have trade winds, not trade centers. So how has Sept. 11 changed us? We take off our slippers at the airport metal detector. We cry over some guy who died in New York but once lived here. Spare me. Tourism’s down, which means less rubes are running around! FRIDAY, SEPT. 12 The Sept. 11 fax says “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,” but I only got it today. And I’m glad—I don’t think I could have taken such big news yesterday. Maui’s been named a “Tree City USA” For the 26th year in a row! By the National Arbor Day Foundation! This tantalizing bit of news comes from a County of Maui Public Information Office press release—which we promptly printed out on two fresh white slices of dead tree, thank you very much. According to the county, this is a singular achievement—no other Hawaiian community has been so honored for so long. And don’t think this didn’t require a lot of hard work and dedication on Maui’s part: To win the official Tree City USA designation, Maui had to have a tree committee, a tree ordinance and, naturally, a “comprehensive community forestry program.” Now I know lots of places have got the tree ordinance, maybe even the tree committee, but a “comprehensive community forestry program?” I thought those things were science fiction… Taste of Lahaina starts tonight. It’s not a bad deal. You pay your $3 to get in, listen to a bunch of great music, buy a bunch of scrip, then eat a bunch of food like ribs and scallops— they love their ribs and scallops at Taste of Lahaina—and hang out in the Beer Garden and drink 3-scrip Budweisers in plastic cups really fast like at college keg parties.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 13 George Foreman says “something’s going on here” after three judges and four of five ringside sports writers say Sugar Shane Mosley beat Oscar de la Hoya in this evening’s fight at the Las Vegas MGM Grand, despite the rest of the free world insisting otherwise. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES Females in tribes in Kenya and other African nations are finally rebelling at the ancient custom of requiring a newly widowed woman to pay to have sex with the village’s “cleanser” to purify her soul sufficiently to be allowed to attend her husband’s funeral, according to an August Washington Post dispatch. Said one particularly vulgar, besotted cleanser in Gangre, “It’s not bad for me since I get to be with the beautiful ladies. The women like it because who else would be with them. They can’t stay alone with the spirits. They need me.” Cleansers are believed to be major HIV conveyers since a condom would not allow the spirits to pass.

In Charleston, S.C., in August, graduate student Mohammed Talha Shekhani, 23, was charged with assault and lewd conduct for what he told police was a sincere, though inept, strategy for meeting women. After a friend told him to just walk up to a woman and start touching her, Shekhani said he initiated four public hugging incidents (with two adults and, almost directly in front of their mothers, two teenage girls). His lawyer said Shekhani's poor judgment was caused by the stress of an academic program that will earn him both a Ph.D. and an M.D. at Medical University of South Carolina.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Outside auditors concluded in May that 16 Houston schools with much-publicized “zero” dropout totals actually had at least 3,000. A whistleblower-principal told The New York Times that principals had been pressured to record their dropouts in some other, benign way. According to him, no one within the school district’s culture (created by former superintendent Rod Paige,

who is now U.S. secretary of education) realized that people would be suspicious if these schools reported “zero” when every other urban school district in America is plagued by dropouts.

NON-PERFORMING PERFORMANCE ART In August at Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Sweet Productions company staged “Sweet FA,” a “play” in which the audience take their seats, but then absolutely nothing happens on stage for the next hour. (News of the Weird has previously mentioned the “musical” piece by the late American composer John Cage, whose “4’33” consists of exactly 273 seconds of silence, which “Sweet FA” beats by 55 minutes, 27 seconds.)

FETISHES ON PARADE Jason Glen Humphrey, 29, was charged with taking indecent liberties for what prosecutors said was a year-long spree of leering at mothers as they changed infants’ diapers in semi-public places, or questioning women about their toddlers’ bowel movements (Hillsborough, N.C., July). And Jeffrey Bernard Fuller, 35, a medical technician working for insurance companies, was arrested after allegedly exceeding the scope of his work at least nine times by giving men gratuitous prostate and pelvic exams (Decatur, Ga., March).

EXTREME PLUMBERS Julio Cesar Cu, 42, and his three diving partners work exclusively by touch because their full-time job is in water so dark that flashlights are useless: to unclog and repair the antiquated Mexico City sewers (“a sea of human waste and industrial chemicals,” according to an April Los Angeles Times dispatch). The city itself is in a valley surrounded by mountains, with frequent flooding and poor drainage in its combined storm water-sewage system. Said one environmentalist, “You walk the streets, smell the stench of raw sewage, and can only imagine what’s happening underground.”

“Don’t Flip the Canoes!” Kihei Canoe Club cashes in on regatta

PHOTO: RON DAHLQUIST

Reach and pull! It was the ungodly hour of 7:30 in the a.m., but the sky was bright blue and windless at Wailea for the Honua’ula Canoe Regatta last Sunday morning. Canoe paddling season is over, but there was a good crowd on hand for the races, open to any team willing to fork over $150 to benefit the Kihei Canoe Club. “It’s great out there,” said Jeff Shaffer, a drenched participant from the Kihei Canoe Club while sitting on a cooler beneath a thatched hut called a Hale. “You couldn’t ask for better conditions.” The big 400-pound orange and red outriggers raced just off shore for a quarter mile. Teams were from all over South

Maui. Some of the Wailea resorts entered their own teams, often using hotel guests. Six paddlers would run their outrigger canoe off the beach, then paddle to the start position. Races were divided up into six divisions—experienced men, novice men, experienced women, novice women, mixed experienced and mixed novice. The novices crews were, of course, more interesting to watch, with their unsteady, often out-of-sync paddling. Many of the races were over almost as soon as they began, with clearly more experienced teams blowing by teams plagued by poor timing. But there were a few come-from-behind thrillers. As the morning got hotter, more partici-

pants moved under the shelter of a Hale, the thatched hut built on the beach along traditional Hawaiian lines. “It’s the first [authentic] Hale built in Kihei in the last 50 to 75 years,” said Jim Hylkema of the Kihei Canoe Club, who built the Hale. “But it’s just for this event. It needs to be in a proper location, which this is not. Definitely Kihei needs one. It’s a covering just for shade. For a permanent waterproof roof you use Lolou leaves, but these are just coconut palm leaves.” In all the morning heats, just two canoes hulied, or flipped over. The first flipped over right after finishing second in a race. “Spectators, these are experienced men,” said race announcer Alika Atai. “You do not flip the canoes during the race. You flip it after the race!” As the dripping crew finally beached their outrigger and came ashore, one participant resting on the beach yelled, “Anything for a swim!” Another, realizing that Hylkema—an experienced steersman—had been on the canoe, yelled “Captain Nemo strikes again!” “Sometimes they like to lift the ama out of the water just a little bit to show how cool they

are,” said Hylkema, drenched in his gray Kihei Canoe Club t-shirt, red shorts and white baseball cap. “It was half accident, half on purpose.” Amazingly, Hylkema didn’t know the other members of his outrigger canoe were. “They just grabbed me,” he said. “I’m a steersman, and they needed one. I have no idea who they are.” The other canoe to huli did so while backing up near shore at the end of a race. Once again, Hylkema—a steersman for many years—was on board. “Excuse me, Jim?” asked Atai over his microphone. “Do you enjoy swimming? But seriously people: don’t flip the canoes. You can break your neck that way.” Atai, a big gregarious guy with a bushy gray beard and gray ponytail sticking out from beneath his faded blue baseball cap, said a lot of funny things during the regatta: “All of you with light skin, put some coconut oil on. Speaking of burned to a crisp, there’s going to be a barbecue lunch for us… “We don’t want no lobsters today. Get in the water, baste the turkey. Suntan lotion, roll over, roll over, put some more lotion on… “This is a double elimination round. If you lost the first heat and you lose this one, you can say aloha to everyone.” After each race the crews would paddle back to shore, turn around, then back up to the sand and beach the outrigger. As they came up to the Hale, volunteers offered them free Clif Bars—either lemon-poppyseed or black cherry almond—which were donated by one of the regatta sponsors. “They’re kind of granola-y,” said one participant. “Kind of like Nutrigrain meets Powerbar.” “Did you know that if you eat anything with poppyseeds in it that you’ll test positive for opium?” asked a spectator. “No, really. Lots of things have poppyseeds. I guess it means you shouldn’t eat healthy, or you’ll get messed up.” MTW

The Paia Youth and Cultural Center is now

8 K S

V T

By Joe Gatto

Roger is a 16-year-old skater from Las Vegas. Despite his age, he’s already a professional videographer. He recently made a 30second anti-tobacco video, then sold it for $300, having received help from the Paia Youth and Cultural Center (PYCC) to write a proposal. He has other ideas, too, such as a video called “Hippy Fishing”—a half-hour documentary in which he interviews people in the streets of Paia about their opinions of all the hippies who congregate there and what makes a person a hippie. It’s already a hit with the audiences and critics around PYCC. “I came from Vegas two years ago where I never had a place to hang out,” said Roger. “I skated, got into some trouble, and was alone a lot. But I’ve made a lot of friends here. PYCC has helped me to fit into Maui by finding out about all of the different cultures and learning to deal with people well and not take things personally. I’ve learned to just do my thing and let other people do theirs.” Like the other kids involved with the video program, Roger has learned a great deal about all aspects of video making and entrepreneurship. He’s found an outlet where he can be creative. “I never knew anything about it before,” he

said. “I took classes at PYCC, learned the editing program, and then taught myself some tricks. Like when I shot a guy jumping as high as he could to a basketball hoop and then off a guy’s back. I spliced the two together and it looked like he was jumping real high. I got started by filming the construction of the skate park and learned a lot from that since I am always the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. I still shoot my friends skating and will do a skate video with time lapse footage of the construction of the park and then some action shots.” Maui is certainly paradise, but kids still run into the same pitfalls here as in any other place in the world—youthful boredom, orneriness and lack of direction. This is where the PYCC comes in. Located in a perfect spot right on the beach between Baldwin Park and Paia Town, it is surrounded by sand dunes, palm trees and a wide-open green space. PYCC serves culturally diverse individuals, and gives them a place where they can fit in, express their creativity, just hang out or participate in several different activities. Their motto is “Building Community Through Our Youth,” and they take seriously the simple and effective “Four Agreements” of Don Miguel Ruíz:

•Be Impeccable With Your Word •Don’t Take Anything Personally •Don’t Make Assumptions •Always Do Your Best

“We look at the process the youth is in, more than the outcome,” said Wes Durham, PYCC’s social worker. “We ask how can we funnel a kid’s passion into a lifelong vocation.” Their uniqueness also shows through being a community organization that distances itself from the political realm. As opposed to schools and social services, PYCC makes an effort to find out what the kids are most interested in doing, then helping them to achieve the goals, working as partners. They don’t have a lot of policy meetings where they discuss abstract ideas and rigid plans; instead they prefer a hands-on, active approach. “We want to upset the status quo,” said Durham. “The kids come first. We work with them one on one and try to get them to invest in the plan and want to work with it. We see ourselves in these kids and their potential. We provide structure with humanity, nothing rigid. We have few rules, but we are very serious about them. The staff members are friends

with the kids, and guides for them.” Durham says that though there are loads of recreational options for the kids, PYCC is program driven. The Entrepreneur Program is the most renowned, consisting of the Kitchen and Video Programs. There is a Dune Restoration Project, in conjunction with the County, as well as the YMCA Water Safety Program, the Girls Club and the Maui Hero Project. In addition, the thing everyone has been waiting for, the Stonewave Skatepark will soon open. “We offer intellectual, creative and physical stuff to keep the kids balanced,” said Blaze Anderson, the Deputy Director. “We try to focus them on not being limited and to avoid single-mindedness. This is good for the job market and will open many doors for them in life.” Stonewave Skatepark will add a whole new dimension to PYCC. It is more than just a fun, state of the art training ground for skaters. Following with their Entrepreneur Program, kids will be able to participate in the Skatepark Operations Training Program. They will be eligible to learn how to act as the managers and caretakers of their park, and earn money and managerial skills in the process.

a unique creative space for self expression What’s more, all the programs feed each other. There is going to be a connected stage where kids’ bands can perform and they can learn about promoting concerts and organizing community events. The Video Program will promote the park and its skaters. The Kitchen Program will eventually operate a snack bar at the park. It currently helps PYCC earn money by selling local style food. Interested youths can learn all about running a kitchen and cash register, as well as, according to 14-year-old Rachell, learn to “cook food for my family without burning it.” The high profile Video Program is generating a great deal of positive publicity for PYCC and is one of the center’s cornerstones. In a partnership with Akaku Public Access TV, they operate a training program where kids learn about all aspects of videography—shooting, studio work and editing. Akaku has indefinitely loaned a camera to PYCC, whose staff members check out more equipment weekly as needed. Kids receive courses in script writing, advanced editing programs like Final Cut Pro, and, for more depth, can participate in PYCC’s Summer Video Camp. Eventually those that are really motivated can take adult training classes at Akaku. Akaku agrees to air their work and PYCC certainly has a presence on the channel. Highlights have been anti-tobacco PSAs and the video of the Beach Fest that aired on September 15. Travis Rice was integral in helping PYCC enter the digital age and in initiating the contact with Akaku to jumpstart the Video Program. He started the computer lab, networked the whole place, got people to use email, created a database and has taught kids how to mix music and make samples, as well as booking bands to play there. Now he teaches the kids. “Our objective is to get kids here, and to do stuff here instead of somewhere else,” said Rice. “To do this we have to be cool to attract them. It is voluntary to be here and we’ll teach them things, but the pace is up to the kids. The things they do here can only have a positive effect on their being and stimulate the whole person. Hawaii kids are cool. They should be the bomb—there’s no excuse for them not to be the best, with our multicultural community, amazing environment, clean air and opportunities. It’s shameful that adults haven’t figured out a way to make that happen before.” These programs depend on a creative staff, sure, but also on money. “We all have great ideas, but maybe not always the funds,” said Rice. “Some of our future ideas are a kids run radio station, a computer lab for adults with proceeds benefiting PYCC and helping kids do more for-profit graphic art and t-shirt lines, etc.” The Video Program is continually improv-

ing and evolving. The new coordinator, Jen Presutti, is hoping to add website design and a course that will develop the business skills to make them profitable. “We’re at an exciting point,” said Presutti. “New things are happening and kids can collaborate, share, and accentuate their strengths to find their niche.” Everyone at PYCC says that the video program has really brought together all the different kids: boys, girls, skaters, bodyboarders and all the different cliques. Kids have been the driving creative force and the main stimulus for everything that happens at PYCC. The staff lets them be creative and do what they love to do. Basically, they let them be themselves. “Being on Maui and the kind of talent we have here makes for a great opportunity for the kids to earn money for their talents,” said Alli Waters, Akaku’s media outreach coordinator. “At PYCC kids can perpetuate their own culture that they are creating here. It is a unique environment because we teach kids some skills and then let them play. We do what the kids have said they want to do, not what we want them to do. This is the reason for our success.” Jackie, age 10, is another of PYCC’s kids. Like many of his friends, he’s saved his videos on PYCC’s computers as evidence of the camaraderie that has developed there. His work is exemplary of the culture the kids and staff create there. Now Jackie’s buddies can use the videos to promote themselves and gain sponsorship for their body boarding or skateboarding skills. Set to hip-hop tunes and boasting amazing footage of excellent bodyboarders at Hana Bay, Paia Bay and Big Beach, these videos show what kids can do when encouraged to follow their dreams and are given some direction. After all, Blaze Anderson made his dream come true by completing the Stonewave Skatepark. “We’re teaching kids to learn to see things from another’s point of view, adapt to their environment, and interact with the general public,” said Anderson. “Kids at PYCC learn to deal with the established structure and be themselves with their own flavor.” Anderson says he’s taken the best of what he learned from a lifetime of skating and is applying it to PYCC and really building community. “Self growth and self awareness come from practicing an individual sport,” he said. “Skaters are practicing idealists. We don’t just dream about the way we wish things could be, but live the way we want things to be. This attitude creates community leaders. Here, kids learn to live their dream without affecting other people, except to make them happier.” MTW

East Meets West Fabulous French, Sensational Sushi

Have you ever tried to eat dinner with someone on the Atkins diet? It’s next to impossible, huh? Can’t have this, only a little bit of that. No carbs usually means no fun. This is true pretty much everywhere except KKO, which stands for Kai Ku Ono. Located across from one of Kihei’s most popular beaches, KKO has ample outdoor lanai seating—which lends itself to spectacular sunsets—a gentle breeze and unparalleled views of bikini clad tourists and sunburns. In back of the restaurant you’ll find pleather couches and a few comfy lounge chairs. They used to have live music, but that was recently replaced with a restaurant-wide speaker system, so you can enjoy some soft island rock with your dinner. Kai Ku Ono translates as “bay of good water.” The place boasts of having the best culinary variety on the island. That’s debatable, though the menu does have a lot of stuff: southwestern, sushi, fish, fowl, red meat, veggie-only. Our meal started with a mac-nut encrusted brie, baked and served with roasted elephant garlic and crustini. My friend Chip, who’s a big guy and knows his appetizers, was excited for something carb-free. We supplemented this with a bowl of steamers. The light sauce was perfect for dipping bread, as I am not on this ridiculous diet. For the main course, we stuck with the specials. Chip selected the Black Angus Prime Rib Au Jus, which he described as a “damn good slab of protein and fat.” He washed it down with a large glass of water, and said gloatingly, “Dr. Atkins would be proud.” His girlfriend Carla had the catch of the day: sautéed mahi-mahi. It wasn’t neces-

sary to ask her if she liked it or not: her mouth was constantly full and the fish was gone shortly after she received it. Both of these meals usually come served over a bed of rice, but— again with the carbs—Chip and Carla wanted steamed vegetables. KKO easily accommodated the request. I ordered what our server Mary described as their most popular meal: the Mango BBQ Ribs. Perfectly cooked and smothered in a tangy sauce, they were meaty and savory—exactly what you look for in ribs. While I’m certainly not on any specific diet, I did complement the ribs with a healthy “No Ka Oi” salad. This medley of greens, fruits and nuts covered in a raspberry sauce and blue cheese made me feel almost as health-conscious as Chip and Carla. For their sake, we passed on dessert, which considering the available mud pie and cheesecakes, was difficult. “KKO has found its niche in providing a variety of dishes to satisfy most everyone at a price that is reasonable,” said manager David Yarbrough. “All of our regular meals are under $20. The restaurant doesn’t have a stuffy feel, and the late-night menu makes this place popular in the evening as a pre-party destination.” Keep in mind that tremendous food often comes at tremendous prices. At KKO, everything is a la carte. And I mean everything. Want a roll with your steamers? That’ll be an extra 55 cents. But you may find that it’s worth it, especially if you’re on one of them funky diets. I mean, I’m not, but I still enjoyed the place. A lot. And I love carbs. I eat carbs every day. Carbs are my friend. So you see, you don’t have to starve yourself on one of them freak diets just to enjoy KKO. KKO is located at 2511 South Kihei Road. 879-1954. Open everyday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a full menu until close. MTW

ARTS&ENTERTAINMENT

BY MARNIE MASUDA

Rice Is Art? The Art of Rice Traveling Theater comes to Maui It’s a little hard to get inspired by two sticky scoops of rice in a Styrofoam container. Sure, nothing’s better for soaking up gravy or tempering the saltiness of lomi salmon. But art? I don’t think so. Or rather, that’s what I thought until I heard about the “Art of Rice Traveling Theater.” An unbridled celebration of the seemingly mundane grain, “The Art of Rice” opens the 2003-2004 season at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) on September 20. The performance incorporates Balinese shadow puppets, Indian Kathakali storytelling, Indonesian gamelan, Japanese taiko drumming and traditional Chinese theater to demonstrate the way rice binds disparate cultures together. Rice. You know, rice? What you have in the morning with your scrambled eggs? What you mix with black beans in your veggie burrito? Rice, rice—Minute Rice, Uncle Ben’s… Rice! At the show, dancers, musicians, actors and artists from throughout the Pacific—including Hawaii’s own taiko master Kenny Endo—will use their mediums to reflect their unique backgrounds, faiths and cultures. Called a “serious homage to multiculturalism” by the Los Angeles Times, the “Art of Rice” began when the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance (CIP) invited artists from around the globe to the campus to share their experiences and experiment with their art. This intense, groundbreaking convergence inspired 11 artists to create a full-length performance and take it on the road. The artists wondered how to combine such distinct art forms and styles into one “package.” What theme united all their cultures?

Rice? Rice! In many Asian languages, the word for rice is synonymous with “food” or “meal.” People greet each other in Thailand, Bangladesh and China by asking, “Have you eaten rice today?” Rice is the spiritual and economic backbone of many rural communities throughout Asia, where all life revolves around the rhythms of planting and harvesting and rice deities are featured during seasonal celebrations. It’s particularly fitting that the show will make its debut here in Hawaii—the first performance was at the Kahilu Theater in Kamuela on September 10—where the ancient traditions of the East meet the convenience-culture of the West. The show explores the dynamic between the ancient and the contemporary, the ways in which attitudes towards cultivating rice have changed with the times. Rice becomes a metaphor for human history, for the delicate balance of nature, for faith. When I spoke to Judy Mitoma, the show’s Artistic Director, she’d just flown in from Bali, where the cast and crew had spent four weeks preparing and rehearsing in a small village near Ubud. They invited the entire village to the show’s dress rehearsal and packed the small, open-air community center with a Balinese audience eager to experience Burmese circle drumming and Chinese storytelling for the first time. Mitoma was ecstatic about the experience, and the upcoming performances in Hawaii. It was Mitoma who first thought to bring the artists together and give them license to collaborate. When she told people the show would be produced and directed by the performers themselves, that they would have complete ownership of its creative design, she was told “this is not possible!” “But, sure enough,” Mitoma said, “the

FILM

BY COLE SMITHEY

After losing a wide spectrum of his once-loyal audience to public scandal around his personal life, the quality of Woody Allen’s films has steadily declined since it peaked with Deconstructing Harry in 1998. Anything Else represents low ebb for the comic filmmaker famous for transmuting the work of Ingmar Bergman into New York-centric comedies full of neurosis based humor. Jason Biggs plays Jerry Falk, an upstart comedy writer, anachronistically inspired by Allen’s stint as a joke writer for Sid Caesar’s old TV program, who serves as Woody’s alter ego and comic apprentice in the story. Allen plays David Dobel, an aging paranoid comic writer who mentors Falk in all matters of love, life and commitment. Stilted artificial dialogue, direct-to-camera narration and strained performances exacerbate the film’s idiosyncratic attitudes toward prejudice, ego, privacy and obsession. Anything Else could easily be called A Feel-Bad Movie for all Occasions. The movie opens with Dobel (Allen) lecturing Falk (Biggs) as the two sit on a bench in Central Park. The scene mirrors a perceived real association between the director and the young actor, and carries an uncomfortable gravity of preachy defensiveness on Allen’s part. When Falk faces the camera to speak directly to the audience about the many and varied charms of his admittedly problematic girlfriend Amanda (Christina Ricci), you know that this is not going to be a comfortable movie. Falk’s narration eventually speeds us backward to the time when he fell in love with Amanda at first sight, while still with his live-in girlfriend, and Amanda was in the company of her beau Bob (Jimmy Fallon). The two couples go on a double date where Falk shamelessly fawns over Amanda, and soon thereafter girl number one exits the relationship, making room for Amanda and her obnoxious mother Paula (Stockard Channing) to infiltrate

Falk’s small apartment. Amid empty meetings with his loser comedy agent Harvey (Danny DeVito), his useless psychoanalyst and the paranoid Dobel, Falk obsesses over getting back into Amanda’s pants, since the live-in couple hasn’t consummated their passion in the past six months. But because the audience never witnesses the couple sharing anything vaguely resembling a healthy sexual relationship, there’s no frame of reference for all the trouble that Falk goes to in his quest. Amanda encourages Falk to have sex with other girls as long as he doesn’t tell her about it, apparently so she can go about having affairs of her own while using him as the doormat that he represents for her. Evidentially though, Falk’s sex drive isn’t demanding enough for him to stray outside of the relationship; it’s only strong enough for him to go along with Dobel’s Nazi fearing advice that he should purchase a phallic high-powered rifle to protect himself from possible attackers.

Jason “Jerry” Biggs Woody Allen’s attempts at keeping the comedy buoyantly light with his signature use of Dixieland and Jazz music backfires with his overuse of Billie Holiday’s version of “Easy To Love.” The melancholy atmosphere rubs against the grain of the film’s romantically barren message that fascism is the instigator of all conflict. Allen has always worn his heart on his sleeve in his movies, and he makes it clear that he’s suffered real emotional damage from the 9/11 attack on New York, and from the alienation he’s received over his not-so-private choices. Woody Allen has lost his knack for well-timed witty repartee, and for constructing stories that hang together in a cohesive manner, but he carries on making films that fewer and fewer audiences will attend. It’s a credit to Jason Biggs’ talent that the young actor muscles his way through Anything Else with as much natural ease as he does. Christina Ricci doesn’t fare anywhere near as well, and most of her scenes are painful to endure. What’s clear is that Woody Allen is a shadow of his former self, and that no amount of Herculean effort from any cast can elevate his soured comedic sensibility. MTW

Meet the Breeds Saturday, 4-6 p.m. at the Maui Mall By far the best scene in Christopher Guest’s Best in Show was when Fred Willard was calling the big dog show competition like it was the Super Bowl and cracking all these jokes about Shih Tzus and money changing hands and how the only way that one flaming gay guy would get away with his outfit in Willard’s old neighborhood was if he was a doorman. Willard won’t be at the Maui Mall for the Valley Isle Kennel Club’s show this weekend, but the dogs—and their far more interesting owners—will be. There will be demonstrations in grooming, training and, of course, “scooping the poop.” [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Pineapples! Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hali’imaile When I was eight years old, my mother decided to go on the Beverly Hills Diet. Remember that farce? It entailed eating whole pineapples and nothing but pineapples for two days. At the end of the first day, I had sores all in my mouth, on my lips and in my intestinal tract from this traumatic gastric experience. I have since forgiven my mom, and now it’s time to forgive the pineapple as well. I figure the best place to do it will be at the Pineapple Dessert Contest at the Third Annual Pineapple Picnic. There’ll be pineapple samples, recipes and plantation tours. Along with the everything-pineapple theme, they are also featuring a farmer’s market and crafts fair, live Hawaiian and contemporary music including Eric Gilliom, hula performances, pony rides and a pa’u presentation. Okay pineapples, here I come.

Celebration of the Cone Monday, at Dairy Queen in Lahaina So Sept. 22 is the last day of summer. Bummer. But did you know that Sept. 22 is also the 100th anniversary of the ice cream cone? Yippee! There’s even some conetroversy surrounding the purported date of this ingenious invention, but Dairy Queen is cool because they’re having a year-long celebration to compromise. They’re also giving away free cones on Monday. Double-dip yippee! Um, actually 5-ounce yippee, but still. Not only that, but they will also be collecting donations for Children’s Miracle Network. Even cooler yet.

Run Maui Run Sunday, 5 a.m.-1 p.m. from Kahului to Kaanapali Several of my friends have been training religiously for the 33rd Annual Maui Marathon for months. One wacky friend agreed to meet me for a burger at Jonny’s Burger Joint and I thought, “Oh thank goodness, she’s still normal.” But then when she showed up uncharacteristically late AND sweaty (and her boyfriend’s off-island), I knew there was a marathon mania goin’ on. Yeah, she ran from Honokowai to Kaanapali just so she wouldn’t feel guilty eating a damn burger. Sigh. Anyway, check the week’s schedule of marathon related events at www.mauimarathon.com and cheer on your favorite nutcases this weekend. They deserve some props, those crazy kids!

LAMB OF GOD “AS THE PALACES BURN” If you think that the new Metallica is “heavy,” then skip this review now because Lamb of God will devastate your puny bitch-ass! While “nu-metal” acts like Linkin-Park and Godsmack were delighting Carson Daly and the kids on TRL with their whiny-ass lyrics about how high-school sucked, the real shit was way underground smoldering in the pits of hell! These guys absolutely lay waste to crap like that monkey-chattering bastard in Disturbed and that bitch crying his eyes out in Staind! The diabolical force of this band’s classic twin guitar blitzkrieg has formidable backup with sick bottom-end bass and fully automatic .50 caliber machinegun drums. The vocals growl, scream, growl and so on, but it’s never too cookie-monstrous and they know when to change it up. I’ve been addicted to the “chug-chug” of metal riffs ever since I heard Judas Priest’s “Green Manalishi” as a kid and Lamb of God deliver in spades! If you like S.O.D. and Slayer, or just want to scare your parents, buy it now!!! —Prosthetic Records 2003 [SPIKE FUQUA]

JOHNNY CASH “JOHNNY CASH AT SAN QUENTIN” (the complete 1969 concert) An American treasure was lost with the passing of the “Man in Black.” I knew it was coming when I heard his wife June died, but it didn’t make it any easier to accept. Cash’s distinctive voice was one of a handful of unmistakable singers I grew up listening to on the radio, and though his music will live on I can’t shake the sad feeling that he no longer “Walks the Line.” In the early 1950’s, he and a short list of country artists including Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis pioneered rock and roll as we know it today, and the fact that his poignant cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” was nominated for six MTV video awards in 2003 is a testament to his contribution. This unedited and complete concert recorded at the infamous “big house” captures his “every-man” appeal, and his playful interaction with the inmates, as well as his band members, is classic. The humor in songs like “Boy Named Sue” and “Wanted Man”, and the pain and resentment of “San Quentin” or “Folsom Prison Blues” are delivered with heartfelt authenticity. I hear the train a comin’, long live the “man in black!” —Columbia/Legacy [SPIKE FUQUA]

CALIMA “NUEVO PARAISO” Calima’s Nuevo Paraiso is high-energy world music. Melding the cultures of three continents, it is representative of diverse cultures. It is culturally rich music, influenced by Spanish Flamenco, Bossa Nova, Greek, Middle Eastern, and Indian traditions. This highly talented trio from San Diego recently gave an impressive performance here at the MACC. The fascinating style of playing two guitars simultaneously by Jimmy Patton is recreated on this diverse disc as well. He taps the fret of his guitar as if it were a little piano, which creates different sounds than normal strumming or plucking methods, creating a distinct sound. The guitars are not identical, as each one produces a unique melody. All the songs stand out and highlight the organic harmony of the two guitarists along with beautiful flute and deep percussion. —P&G Productions [JOE GATTO]

TRIBALISTAS "TRIBALISTAS" Brazilian music is as vast and diverse as the country itself. Tribalistas successfully translates the variety available there by deftly combining samba, soul, bossa nova and rock. "Tribalistas" won the Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album in the Latin Grammys recently to further account for their excellence outside of Brazil. Tribalistas is a collaboration of three of Brazil’s top artists —Arnaldo Antones, Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Monte. The thirteen tracks range from mellow acoustic numbers to soulful, funky tunes and catchy rock songs. I don’t understand Portuguese either, but these tunes are undoubtedly attractive and passionately performed. Sometimes eccentric and always captivating, this album is a good choice for broadening one’s horizons. —Phonomotor Records [JOE GATTO]

LES NUBIANS “ONE STEP FORWARD” There’s nothing sexier than hearing two French girls sing in Spanish to a Reggae backbeat on a hip-hop track with scratchy mariachi sampling. Les Nubians is made up of sisters Hélène and Célia Faussart, of French and Cameroonian heritage, whose debut Princesses Nubiennes received worldwide acclaim. Their follow-up CD is similarly all silky smooth jazz and seductive, downtempo chill beats. It’s a mix of loungey electronica, island reggae, hip-hop and French pop with an afro-beat. Their sounds coo and flow like silk and flowers, champagne bubbles and disco lights. My French is limited, so Les Nubians could be singing about macaroni and cheese for all I know, but I’d still be swooning. I’m a sucker like that. – OmTown Music [SAM CAMPOS]

ARIES: Your efforts won't go unnoticed. Things are on their way to becoming easier. Relationships and romances are likely. Health concerns are likely to improve. Your interests in psychology and metaphysics will help you to understand yourself and others. TAURUS: Nothing less than love will do. The bull was once worshipped for its sustenance and its creative power. You're in a power cycle when it comes to art and music. Your heart is open and you feel ready to express yourself. Do something to benefit your favorite cause. GEMINI: Artistic blocks are removed and you are free to be yourself. Mercury goes direct on Saturday the 20th. Your communications and travels begin to get easier. Family matters are still on top of your “to do” list. CANCER: The moon will be in Cancer the evening of the 18th through the 20th. Addressing long-term goals and taking care of overdue bills and communiqués will be best done Saturday or shortly thereafter. Bloom where you're planted. LEO: Sunday will be your high point with the moon in Leo sustaining you through the early part of the week. You become a little more charming this week. Monetary issues continue to dominate. When you give something away, you make yourself richer. VIRGO: Your season is coming to a close. Monetary gains will be easier to come by. Play it safe by not overspending. Mercury goes direct on the 20th in Virgo. If you're not already the talk of the town, you're soon to be the brains behind the operation. LIBRA: Fantasies of recklessness may show up in your dreams. The lucid dreamer takes control of what he wants to see. Looking good means being tasteful yet relaxed, not uptight and not trashy. On the 23rd the sun moves into Libra and love is in the air. SCORPIO: Much of your focus has been preparing for the future. What you wish for yourself, you need to wish upon others. Have compassion for yourself when the unpleasant side effects of karma begin to show their ugly heads. SAGITTARIUS: Contain your energy to your local environment. Go with what is familiar. Work and career issues begin to move forward. You may be considering solar panels or another way to renovate your home. CAPRICORN: You'll learn to balance the needs of your relationship with the needs of your career. Partnership difficulties require patient negotiation. Find ways to open up your heart. Work on being creative as well as diplomatic. AQUARIUS: A return to your radical roots happens this week. Make sure your stomach is calm before going to the dinner table. You need to make some music or spend a little leisure time at an exotic location. The tourists are gone. Enjoy some beauty. PISCES: The feelings of rebellion are going underground into your subconscious. Dreams become more vivid. Symbolic meanings are found everywhere. The sweetness of romance could turn into something deeper. Work on dispelling fears. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Dee Dee Ramone 9/18/52, Bill Murray 9/21/52, Ani DiFranco 9/23/70 kozmickev@sunset.net

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAM CAMPOS

One morning at Java Jazz in Honokowai, I overheard a conversation between an attractive female server in her early 20s and a table of visiting middleaged women. The young woman was describing in detail, at the behest of the dining party, the pain of piercing her nose. As the older women ooh-ed and aahed, the pierced princess nonchalantly equated the act of piercing with a quick “pinch of skin” and encouraged the cropped red-haired women to “get it done!” It was kinda cute, in that bohemian, trans-generational, Sunday at the hip coffeehouse kind of way. I wondered if I should debate with them the benefits of Prince Alberts as a segue-way for lunchtime conversation. But I thought better of it. That evening, my friend Jen and I ventured up to Roy’s in Kahana for a little salad and soufflé action. We discussed the glory of butter and how chicken and Caesar salad is “kinda like, you know, Bert and Ernie!” While a tattooed admirer was accosting Jen, I dove into the Chocolate Soufflé—the real reason we were there. I could not believe how such a divine creation, something so outrageously delicious, so heavenly in its semi-sweet perfection, could possibly be manmade. Jen leaned over and reminded me that indeed it wasn’t. “It was made by a woman,” she said. Oh. Our plan was to join up with our friends Katy and Christine to head down to the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina. The local band Nuff Sed would be playing and we had heard great things about them. Unfortunately, by the time we got there and all the butter, soufflé and wine (in Jen’s case, Bushmills and water) had settled, every song sounded like a lullaby to us. So in an embarrassing moment of food-coma induced lack of stamina, we left. The next night I ventured across the island to Jacque’s in Paia. There, I met my hot girlfriend Amy and her “haute” boyfriend, Randall. Randall’s friend Greg di Piazza was playing music with his band, and Amy called to tell me they reserved a table up front. When I got there, I realized “up front” actually meant “unobstructed view of bass guitarist’s crotch.” Still, Greg and his players had such a great musical style, we didn’t mind the obnoxious proximity. Even when they acid-jazzed their way through a rendition of Sublime’s “What I Got”, we didn’t realize they were playing a cover until the song was nearly over. And thanks to The Point 101.1 FM, we all know “What I Got” pretty damn well, so that’s quite a feat. Did I tell you that Amy and I live for dessert? Well, we do. So after dinner--much like the venerable female praying mantis--we made mad, passionate love to our Apple Cobbler. Then we ate it. Amy was all jacked on Red Bull and vodka, so she convinced Randall and I to get a nightcap at Charley’s. When we arrived, Lawai’a was in full effect with Kanoa from Gomega singing vocals. The place was packed and, in true Charley’s fashion, most of the bar was singing backup. We ordered, then slammed down, our final drinks of the evening: the ever popular and highly frou-frou Lemon Drops. And as my little lovebird friends began to paw each other, I headed outside for a bit of fresh air. I quickly found solace in the attentions of a very drunk friend. As I watched my friends scurry away into the night, and I tried in vain to escape the clutches of my wayward companion, I smiled to myself at yet another night spent in the proverbial paradise. Or some shit like that.
