I had two cousins in the Trade Center and one on her way to work who saw the plane hit, and one by marriage who was working in the Pentagon. Close enough for you STUPID? Hawaii is a great first strike offensive [sic], ie… Koreas [sic] nukes, and whether you realize it or not, we are all in this together. So many people died and you comment on tourism. Dude, journalism is for grown-ups! Why not publish a comic book or something and leave the commentary for someone with a brain and a soul. PS Put the bong down and GROW UP. PSS [sic] I surf with you at Shark Pit [sic] --Tired of your irresponsibility

Growing Cannabis for ENERGY would create an agriculturally based economy. This would give farmers and the working classes of our society the ability to control our energy and finally share in the wealth of our nation. Using Cannabis for our paper products would save thousands of acres of trees, helping preserve the Earth’s ecosystems. Using biomass for fuel will help restore the Earth’s normal CO2 cycle to a more natural balance, reversing the Greenhouse Effect and stopping acid rain. Re-legalizing Marijuana is NOT just about “getting high.” Re-legalization will help many sick people from suffering and dying, and it will stop innocent lives from being destroyed in prisons. When Marijuana is legal, they will not be able to stop full–scale commercial Hemp production, which will ultimately stop this biocidal [sic] human destruction and save our planet. --Michele Bafan, Kahului

WHALE DONE LIKES THE REEFER Congratulations. This is the most stereotypical a grossly untrue opinion I have had the misfortune to read in a while (“Cheech 4 President?” Aug. 15, 2002). All Cannabis RE-legalization is gaining more momentum around the world, and slowly across our country because A) It is the most valuable and versatile RENEWABLE RESOURCE on our planet, and B) It poses NO danger to individuals or society, and no one in world history has ever died from it. As for your stereotyping pro-legalization supporters to all be like “Spiccoli,” you are WAY out of touch with this issue. Sure, people make jokes regarding RE-legalization because this is such a ridiculous prohibition, and many of us are waiting for the day that we can relax with this natural herb and NOT be considered a criminal. Cannabis produces more biomass for fuel and paper, per acre, than any other crop.

This is in regards to the sting carried out by the Maui Police and the Liquor Commission on Sept. 11. On this night, they sent underage people into bars, restaurants and liquor stores to purchase alcohol. Being an owner of a bar or restaurant on Maui is a very difficult challenge with immense responsibilities. It’s a seven-day a week, 1418 hour per day job. We provide a big amount of local business, while our rent, expenses and labor can reach over $100,000 per month. Following the liquor laws of the state and county represents five percent of the daily incoming focus and work, while 95 percent is hard work toward being creative and making a consistent business. That night when government officials were harassing our establishments and making us feel like criminals there were serious crimes occurring somewhere else. We realize that these excessive liquor control laws can close our business down at any time. But where is the crime—in our bars and restaurants or with drugs on the streets? We are targeted because the County can easily collect a fine from a restaurant for $10,000 or more, while they can’t get anything from street criminals. -A conscientious restaurant owner

Peggy Sue’s Classic Car Show returns to Kihei

Classic She was sitting off to the side, kind of between a purple Bucket T and Peggy Sue’s restaurant. Painted gleaming blue with white stripes, with big-ass exhaust pipes that look like they came off a Mack truck, a driver’s side roll bar and a front end that could swallow a man whole, there was no question she was a Shelby Cobra. “Looks new,” said a guy passing by. “It is new,” said the owner, who added that it was built in Boca Rotan, Florida. In fact, it still held Sunshine State plates. Even though the Cobra was one of the estimated 40,000 “authentic” replicas in the U.S. today, there was no question it was a star attraction at Peggy Sue’s annual Classic Car show, held Sunday in Kihei. “Fast and dangerous,” said one guy reminiscing about the Cobra he once drove. “God it was fast, but it was uncomfortable.” “God, that looks fun!” said another guy walking by. “It’s too much fun,” said the smiling owner. “It’s so much fun it should be against the law!” The heat didn’t stop bunches of people from walking slowly in the unforgiving sun among the dozens of cars on display. Chevy’s were real popular—‘55 and ’57 Bel Airs mostly—but there were a few trucks, including a white Chevy Luv up-gunned with a V-8 engine. There were a couple Studebaker Larks—one of which was totally, completely powder blue, including the steering wheel column, carpeting, sun visors, fabric top cover and tissue dispenser. There were a couple Henry J’s, too, including one metallic blue Corsair Deluxe with its classic missile-launcher-like hood ornament. A few owners put funny little stickers or signs on their cars warning folks to keep their distance: “Do not touch this vehicle unless you are in the nude!” “Old cars are like wives & girlfriends. If they don’t belong to you… Please do not touch!”

“Dirty old men need love too.” The bright yellow ’32 Chevy pickup with the wood bed and 350 horsepower engine was cool—and a steal at just $25,000. The big Chevy Biscayne was great, too, as was the white ’64 Cadillac El Dorado. As was the red and white Ford Fairlane Skyline that could retract its hardtop into what was otherwise a giant trunk. Then there was the brown 1979 Ford Ranchero GT with just 2,000 miles on it. Right. “Actually, it’s been in storage since 1980, said owner Pat Quinn, who also runs a couple auto shops in Kahului. “Everything on it except the tires is totally original. I saw it in a magazine ad in California. I paid a lot of money for it, and I hope to get $25,000 for it now.” Quinn also owned the black behemoth next to the Ranchero, a beautifully restored 1941 Lincoln custom sedan. Quinn said the car once sat in a museum and still has its original V-12 engine. Of course, complete auto restoration has its limits on Maui. For instance, Quinn said getting parts chromed is a matter of sending the parts to a shop in California, “waiting until it’s done and then paying the bill.” Then there was Harold Fernandez of Kokomo and his beloved Willy’s Jeep, painted up to look like a U.S. Army headquarters vehicle in World War II. Fernandez showed me the Jeep’s curved frame under the radiator and said that’s how you tell if the Jeep was a Willy’s, as opposed to an AMC or other such version. Fernandez knew a lot about Jeeps because he used to drive one in the National Guard from 1956 to 1968. He wasn’t sure when this one was built, except that it was produced during the War. Painted in classic olive drab, the Jeep even had Fernandez’ old serial number painted on its hood. It was pretty clean and empty inside, though the full stereo with speakers looked a little newer than World War II. But the horribly uncomfortable foam pad seats were easily vintage. “I’ve also got a 1968 Cougar GT 390,” he said. “It’s got the hidden headlights and everything. I hope to have it restored by next year. I Hope.”

probably moved to a “Big Gulch” to escape detection. Of course, this is only a theory as to why no one can find the creature which has so far left precious little physical evidence of its existence: fur entangled on barbed wire, paw prints and scratch marks (previous reports that the cat had left harassing voicemail messages taunting numerous Olinda residents proved unfounded). In fact, the last sighting was over a week ago, when some guy walking his dog in upper Olinda found the cat, which promptly ran away… As if Maui doesn’t have enough animal problems, now we have The Case of the Tortured Goat. This comes straight from those madcaps at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Now don’t get me wrong—PETA is good people. Hey—Pam Anderson works with PETA, and what’s good for Pam Anderson is good for me. Anyway, apparently PETA doesn’t like it when you torture goats to death. And by torture, they mean force-feed it vinegar, slit the animal’s throat and then “blow torch his or her hair while the animal was alive and fully conscious.” Funny thing is that when a Kihei woman called the Maui PD to complain that her neighbor was torturing a goat to death, the dispatcher said it was part of the islands’ “culture” and not to worry about it.

The fifteen thousandth Miss America Pageant went down this weekend, and our local girl Miss Hawaii Kanoelani Gibson didn’t win. Actually, the 22 year-old Kapolei resident and “furloughed” flight attendant finished “First Runner Up,” but that’s just pageant-speak for “Chief Loser.” Of course she should have won, especially considering what a big dumb idiot the winner Miss Florida turned out to be. Amazingly, losing—or “not winning,” as the kids say it these days—seems to have been Gibson’s plan all along. According to an AP story picked up by today’s Maui News, “Gibson said she was relieved at not winning because of the demands that would have been placed on her.” Brilliant! No, it’s better than brilliant—it’s fiendishly clever! First you quit your job, turn your life completely upside down, expose yourself on television to national humiliation, all the time saying you want to win but secretly plotting to lose, then lose! It can’t fail!… By the way, no one over at the county can find any evidence that the old Kimo Apana mayoral regime ever existed. You know most government agencies and administrations generate, like, a million pieces of paper every day? Not Apana. So far, aides to Alan Arakawa, his successor, haven’t found Document One from the guy—no memos, reports, emails or even computers have been located.

Just an advisory—a bureaucratic move, I’m sure… What, there’s another bulletin? This one came in at 11:11 a.m.… Oh. Now it says a “Tsunami Watch” has been issued… “Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter. An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii.”… Uh huh. Says any wave would hit around 5 p.m. tonight… They’re not blowing the doomsday siren yet, right? We have Tsunami Watches all the time, right? Don’t 8.1 magnitude earthquakes hit Japan like every week?… Was all set to loot Lahaina Town of its precious, precious whale art when a new bulletin came in at noon: “Based on all available data there is no destructive tsunami threat to the state of Hawaii. Therefore the tsunami watch for Hawaii is cancelled.” What a rip! I was all set to drive up Lahainaluna Road with my loot and watch the town get wiped out! First there was that Hurricane Jimena fake-out a few weeks ago, and now this. Stupid fake catastrophes.

Joanne D’Patricia takes on the Maui Police

These boots were made for walkin’ Joanne D’Patricia doesn’t like littering. And she doesn’t care who does it. On the night of Sept. 13, the 44-year-old Lahaina resident alleges, one of Maui’s finest “assaulted” her after she scolded him in public for dropping a lit cigarette on the street. Though later detained, D’Patricia wasn’t arrested. She now demands that the department investigate the officer’s alleged actions. In fact, the night of the incident she hand wrote a six-page police report detailing her actions and those of Maui PD Sergeant Max Kincaide. She later sent the letter, headlined “ASSAULT, STRANGULIZATION and INJURY of INNOCENT WOMAN,” to every newspaper on the island—including Maui Time—as well as Governor Linda Lingle and state Attorney General Mark Bennett. “There is an ongoing investigation,” said a Maui Police spokesman who refused to comment on the specific allegations or allow an interview with Kincaide. “This has not been thrown into the wind. Whenever anyone makes a complaint against a police officer there’s going to be an investigation. Period.” D’Patricia’s incident report veers from the mundane to the hysterical. At not quite 8 p.m. on Sept. 13, D’Patricia says she was walking down Dickenson Street on her way to A Taste of Lahaina when she saw Kincaide drop a lit cigarette on the street. That’s when D’Patricia did what any normal, smart citizen would do—she charged up to the cop and started giving him lip. “I picked his still burning cigarette up off the middle of the street and handed it to him

through his car window,” she wrote in her police report. “I asked, ‘please do not litter; please do not toss lit cigarettes out your window; please be a decent example and above reproach to our community and the children that watch you do this.’ He got verbally angry at me.” That’s when D’Patricia alleges Kincaide “ASSAULTED and STRANGLED” her. “He grabbed both my arms violently and physically to ‘contain’ me,” she wrote. “I yelled ‘let go of me, let go of me—I have done nothing wrong!’ I managed to break free of him and continued West up Dickenson Street. A woman in front of Kobe’s restaurant had witnessed and said, ‘Good on you girl—for calling the cop on his BS.’ We are tired of this nonsense in Lahaina!!” D’Patricia says she ran into Lahaina Coolers, yelling “Call 911 NOW!” She says Kincaide then “followed me into the restaurant, physically grabbed me around the waist, hoisting my shirt up, exposing my breasts indecently in public, in front of [approximately] 50 people! I yelled again, ‘Let me go, let me go, you are exposing my breasts, I have done nothing wrong.’ I bit his left lower arm—I was upset.” D’Patricia said Kincaide “carried” her out of Lahaina Coolers, “STRANGLING MY THROAT with his right hand, in full public view.” She wrote that the attack left her with a stiff neck, two cuts on her neck, difficulty in swallowing, a “massive headache,” sore arms, a sore left leg, cuts on her right arm and sore breasts. She said she has no health insurance. According to D’Patricia, this alleged attack couldn’t have come at a worse time. “I have currently been healing from a comainduced rape drug crime [in] May 2001,” wrote D’Patricia. “Where I was strangled, raped and beaten almost to death by a sadistic sociopath and his seven timeshare/activity salesmen buddies. There was no justice. My Post Traumatic Stress kicked in BIG TIME—especially with the RE-Strangling of my neck, which has already been compromised, and in very sensitive condition to be easily snapped! I rarely, if ever, go out of my home, since May 2001, especially in the evening. Last night was a courageous attempt for me to open up my life again to the outside world. I was looking forward to life—not another attempted murder of my personal self.” D’Patricia then outlined 25 “charges” against the officer, including “attempted strangling—my number one upset in all this madness and nonsense,” assault, injury, “putting my body, spirit, heart, soul and mind at risk—traumatization [sic],” “indecently exposing my breasts in public,” littering, “placing ocean life in danger,” “contempt, disrespect and obvious hatred and anger of women” and “lack of self control in dealing effectively with the public.” She also demanded he undergo a drug test “for possible use of methamphetamines or other drugs.” MTW

Matthew Long was acquitted of assaulting his girlfriend, Vicki Smith, in Cincinnati in September. Smith (250 pounds) had accused Long (116 pounds, one leg) of choking her with their dog's leash (although before the leash could be introduced as evidence, the dog reportedly ate it). Long testified that what really happened was that he grabbed Smith in a desperate attempt to prevent her from walking out, clinging to her as she dragged him through the house. ("Love does that," Long added.) When Smith admitted that she could throw Long around "like a rag doll," the judge found him not guilty. Both Smith and Long are married to other people.

At least nine child-care centers in Melbourne, Australia, have banned all stories about crime-fighting superheroes, lest it encourage aggressiveness (August). A primary school in Birmingham, England, banned parents from its annual sports day so that the kids who did not win contests and races would not feel so bad (May). The British Health and Safety Executive decided that a European Union standard for multi-story buildings should also apply to mountain climbers, thus requiring ice and snow warnings posted on mountainsides and the use of an additional safety rope for all climbers (August). An Irish government minister encouraged churches to investigate whether burning incense during services might violate the law on secondary smoke (August).

“One of the Striped-Legged Crew” Julie Gilbert hangs at the Red Bull King of the Air Julie Gilbert is pretty much your typical world champion kiteboarder and Maui resident. Typical, except for the small facts that she learned how to windsurf in Meridian, Idaho and currently has no ACL tendon in her right knee. Already the women’s world hang time champion, Gilbert will have a chance this week to break her own record at the annual Red Bull King of the Air competition— the preeminent kiteboarding event in the world. Qualifying begins this Monday, Oct. 6, at Kanaha Beach. Official heats will take place at Ho’okipa Beach. Gilbert, a 32-year-old Pukalani resident whose husband Chris will also be competing, has been looking forward to the King of the Air since, well, last year. “It is hands down my favorite contest,” she said. “Just being able to ride at Ho’okipa with just a few others in the water is great. And they’re all my friends.” Gilbert currently holds the women’s world hang time record of 6.48 seconds— achieved at last year’s King of the Air. She calls it “a defining moment” of her life. “When you say the time it doesn’t sound like a lot,” said Gilbert. “But when you count it out—one-one thousand, two-one thousand—you realize it’s a long time.” Gilbert described the experience of flying through the air on a kiteboard this way: “You’re riding along and it’s like listening to heavy metal music,” she said. “Then you release and start to go up into the air, and it’s very quiet and peaceful.

You feel like a little bird. Last year I got double lift—as if an elevator went up, stopped, then shot me up again. “I was really grinning when it happened. I could hear the crowd just explode when I went up. Then I had to land. You can’t just crash into the water. And then it’s like the heavy metal music starts again.” Gilbert—known as Julie Prochaska until last year when she married Chris Gilbert—was born in land-locked Meridian, Idaho, a small town just outside Boise. “I’m not living your normal life plan for an Idaho girl,” she said. “Surfing in Idaho is pretty much unknown. But people do windsurf on a mud flat there. I learned how to windsurf on a little pond in front of a restaurant called Red Robin. In late 1998, Prochaska moved to Maui. Wanting only to stay the winter, she got a job at Hi Tech Surf Sports in Kahului. That’s where she met kiteboarder Chris Gilbert. Soon after they started dating. I came to Maui to do windsurf racing,” she said. “I had a hard time. There were only a couple women’s races on the World Cup. So I thought I’d learn to wave sail. I started getting into it. Then I got sidetracked by kiteboarding. I don’t think I ever wave sailed again.” After a brief trip to Hood River, Oregon for some windsurfing, Prochaska suddenly decided that she wanted to be back on Maui. By March, 1999, Prochaska was living with Gilbert and taking on kiteboarding “full on.” “Back then people were always stopping you on the beach, asking what it was and how it worked,” she said. “It was still really just a few

Gilbert in the water... guys then. It’s come a long way in four years.” By 2001, Prochaska set the woman’s hang time record at King of the Air. The next year, she married Gilbert and broke her old record. Remarkably, she did all that with a torn ACL. “I injured my right ACL three years ago,” Said Gilbert. “I was on a photo shoot and I came down stiff legged. I was wearing wake boarding bindings at the time. So I came down and twisted my right knee. Then I went bicycle riding for 30 minutes. I said to myself that my knee kinda hurt, but I didn’t do anything about it.” Gilbert went to the doctor, but she said he misdiagnosed her trouble and told her not to worry. For the next two years, she kiteboarded her way to championship after championship, all with a torn ACL. “Then last year I had a freak little jump where I ripped the scar tissue and got a bone bruise,” she said. “I got an MRI and this time the doctor said I had no ACL. The doctor said that if I have surgery it would take me out of competition. Eventually I’ll have the surgery. But it doesn’t

Steely Dan released the better part of their catalog before my time, but I still dug on their distinctive music while I was in high school, listening to hardcore. So in the summer of 2000, when I was back in Ohio and heard Steely Dan was playing in Cleveland, I reunited with my college buddies and went to Blossom Music Center to see how they sounded live. The crowd was an eclectic mix. There were guys stuck in the seventies, suburban couples and people recently turned on to the band by its new album Two Against Nature—all together, three generations of fans. The sound quality of their records is always stellar and in concert they improved on it even further, improvising a lot while utilizing great back-up singers and a tight band. Some old stand-bys got a nice reworking: “Night by Night,” “Daddy Don’t Live in that New York City,” “Monkey in Your Soul” and the remarkable encore of “Dirty Work”—one of my all time favorites–with the back-up singers giving it a new personality. The old hits were great; they brought out some excellent new tunes from their deep creative reservoir. “Cousin Dupree,” “Gaslighting Abbie,” “West of Hollywood” and “Jack of Speed” really got the people worked up. Now with another new album to draw from, this year’s tour is already getting outstanding reviews. I know I’m excited to see them here– outside, with a spectacular view of Iao Valley and a tropical breeze. Way better than Cleveland. Steely Dan songs are a lot like Maui. They are inhabited by quirky characters and describe colorful people and places with indefinable names. Maybe that’s why Walter Becker, the guitarist and bassist, moved here after the group’s 1981 breakup. Obscure lyrics, inside jokes and sophisticated storytelling characterize their work. Many fans have spent much time trying to decipher the words, trying to find meaning in the abstract or make connections to explain just what the guys are talking about. Just what is Pretzel Logic? How do Haitians get divorced? Was Kid Charlemagne a real San Francisco cocaine dealer? What does drinking Black Cow do to you? Many people wonder about the band’s name, which is not a reference to some guy named Steely Dan. In fact, the name refers to a dildo in William Burrough’s Naked Lunch. With references like that, you can’t expect the ordinary from group members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Steely Dan was never an easily categorized band even in the 1970s when they enjoyed commercial success. Their music is rock based on jazz with a good dose of pop and soul, and definitely just something all their own. They usually hide their weirdness in beautiful, complex arrangements. Often, a beautiful melody or catchy, funky chorus will mask a dark theme. This is especially true on Black Friday. But it’s usually better to just sit back and fantasize about the vivid, imaginary worlds conjured by a Steely Dan tune can put you in and not over analyze it. “Well, I think it’s kind of defeating for us to just give any explanation of the songs, because I think part of what makes them interesting is associations that they spring in the listener’s mind,” said Fagen, the singer and keyboard

Steely Dan comes to the MACC

player, in a recent interview on the program One Hour Sale. “But, you know, we certainly have something in mind when we write them that’s, you know, maybe specific. Although sometimes I’m not sure if we even get down to the real details. You know, they’re songs. We’re not writing a novel or a film, so we don’t have to know everything about a character and we don’t have to know everything about the situation the character’s in. But we have a general idea. But I think that the listeners, generally speaking, even if they get something else from the song than what we intended, it’s usually pretty close, especially as to the feeling of it.” Steely Dan was very successful throughout the 1970s despite their eccentric style and confounding lyrics. In their first incarnation (1972-1980) they created seven unique and sophisticated albums. But in 1974 they gave up touring after a series of disastrous concerts and concentrated on songwriting and recording – creating their most inspired works. Following the release of Gaucho in 1980, Fagen and Becker felt spent both musically and personally. Believing they reached their high point with Aja, they recorded Gaucho under pressure from record label disputes. By 1981, they called the whole thing off. Walter Becker moved to Hawaii and Donald Fagen headed back to his hometown of New York. Their music became a staple of classic rock radio, even though it is much more advanced than say Bachman Turner Overdrive. In the 1980s and ‘90s, the comprehensive box set Citizen Steely Dan came out that included all of their albums. Fagen also made two excellent solo records—The Nightfly and Kamakiriad—and Becker produced jazz albums. For Kamakiriad, Fagen even employed Becker to be his producer. The two began working together on and off at Becker’s studio in Maui and various studios in New York City. In the late summer of 1993, Fagen and

Becker resurrected the Steely Dan name for their first tour in 19 years. They put together an all-star band dubbed the Steely Dan Orchestra and did a small tour, earning rave reviews. This inspired them to do a full-on tour. In 1994 they took their hits around North America, reeling in the years, improving on the old and promoting their solo projects. Following this series, the band went through two years’ worth of live tapes to come up with some material for a live album–Alive in America–Steely Dan’s first. After two decades of not playing live together, they set out to make up for lost time. The group went on the road again in the summer of 1996, this time hitting both the U.S. and Europe. New renditions of their classics, previews of new songs and exciting improvisation characterized these tours.

By Joe Gatto Following the 1996 tour, Fagen and Becker dove right into the songwriting process for a new Steely Dan album. They collected a crack team of session musicians to create Two Against Nature, which was released on Feb. 29, 2000. It immediately shot to number six on the albums chart, ending talk that they were just another classic rock group like the Eagles—out of creative juices and charging high prices for concert tickets. By the summer of 2000, they were really going strong. The group played North America, Japan, and Europe with some older tunes getting a fresh update. Then in December of that year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally inducted them. A couple months later Steely Dan won four Grammy awards for Two Against Nature–including Album of the Year. Instead of resting on their laurels, Fagen and Becker kept the momentum going and recorded their most recent album Everything Must Go in one year. “Everything Must Go was an attempt

to pick up where we left off without taking an inordinate amount of time,” said Fagen. The smooth recording process had much to do with employing a solid backing band, many of whom had played on the tours. Having a group who could do whatever Fagen and Becker could dream up allowed them to set a high standard. It also gave the album a live feel. “We went for live tracking this time and got great, in-the-pocket tracks,” said Becker. “We did a few things differently – including tracking and mixing in analog instead of digital,” said Elliot Scheiner, the album’s engineer. “That contributed to giving this album a really rich and satisfying sound.” The virtuosity comes through on Everything Must Go, which was recorded a little bit in Hawaii, but mostly in New York, and came out in June to rave reviews. One of the album’s standout tracks is “Blues Beach.” On the program One Hour Sale, Becker and Fagen were asked about this tune and gave some interesting commentary: Interviewer Jody Denberg: “There’s a phrase I’ve heard used for someone who’s unemployed. They say that person is ‘on the beach.’ And the song, ‘Blues Beach,’ on Everything Must Go speaks of the early resigned. During the 20 years that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker didn’t record together as Steely Dan, did either of you think that your band was eternally kaput?” Fagen: “Well, our band, I guess, actually was on the beach, as you say, as of about 1974, our steady band. After that, we started using a group of players, both in New York and Los Angeles that we tried to adapt to their various styles. But I don’t think we were on the beach, really. Walter was literally on the beach for part of that in Hawaii.” Steely Dan has been touring all summer in support of Everything Must Go. The tour will end in Hawaii: at the Maui Arts and Culture Center (MACC) on October 10 and in Oahu the next day. “I don’t think we were ever interested in really reproducing recordings,” said Fagen. “I think… when we listened to the old records, we noticed that some of the arrangements were actually quite good and quite complete and worked well on stage. Things that we could expand for the stage or things that – things that were hits that were kind of boring to play after a while, we’d try to change the arrangement once in a while to try to kick ‘em up a little bit. And maybe if we have a soloist who’s working with us who we think might fit in really good on a certain song we can expand the arrangement to include some improvisation, etc.” Musicians like Fagen and Becker show artists can hold onto their artistic integrity, be entertaining, please critics and fans, and still make money. On October 10 Steely Dan will share, for the first time on Maui, its unique quirkiness, far out songs and stories and captivating musical idiosyncrasies. Perhaps Becker will reveal just how much living on Maui has inspired him and where our own quirky paradise fits into Steely Dan’s fantastical universe of wild characters and strange places. Crème brulee—c’est magnifique! When a new French restaurant and patisserie opened next door to Kula Ace Hardware, it immediately piqued my interest. I have to admit it, as politically incorrect as it may be during these tenuous times, I am a major Francophile. I love France! I even like Parisians. To think I’d have access to real croissants and baguettes just made me giddy! I hotfooted it to La Provençe tout de suite. On my first visit, I enjoyed a perfect croissant and cafe au lait on the sunny patio surrounded by geraniums and morning glories. Maui couldn’t be further from the rolling lavender fields of Provençe, but the atmosphere reminded me of golden mornings in Aix when I had nothing to do but sit and write and suck up the scenery. The light-as-air pastries are a major morning draw at La Provençe. For breakfast, the mango scone is a must—very moist, unlike many scones I’ve encountered. Savory and sweet crepes are offered at lunchtime. You may opt for a traditional ham and cheese or more inventive vegetable and chevre. If you’re feeling sinful, there’s the Gran Marnier or raspberries and cream. The bread at La Provençe is magnifique; a friend of mine can’t get enough of the chicken and brie sandwich. If you’re into eggs benedict, try La Provençal on Sundays. You may want to linger all day, gazing up at Haleakala and nursing a latte. In the evenings, La Provençe transforms into an elegant outdoor bistro. A Parisianstyle street lamp casts a golden glow over the umbrellas and candlelit tables. French music wafts from hidden speakers. It’s very languid and Provençal. Were the seats filled with smoking, frantically gesticulating patrons instead of chuckling, upperclass haoles in expensive aloha wear, I would have been totally transported. Oh well, you can’t ask for everything. Bring your own

wine or beer—there is a $5 corkage fee—and settle in for a nearly authentic experience. For starters, my husband tried the baked brie and gorgonzola in an impossibly flaky puff pastry. If you’re up for something rich, this one is “oh mon dieu” good. My vegetable and béchamel crepe was accompanied by an artfully presented sun-dried tomato and mango puree. We could have stopped there. These are not puny pupus. But we were happy when our attentive server brought out the rack of lamb and duck confit. Both dishes were tender and exceptionally savory, accompanied by delicate potatoes au gratin and julienne veggies. Pasta with pesto and lamb sausage and a chicken with mushroom cream sauce were also on the menu. On this particular night, we noticed there was no fish available. Chef and Proprietor Thierry J. Michelier explained that he features only the freshest island fish from Nagasako’s and only wild salmon, so it’s not offered every night. But when it is, you know you’ll be getting high-quality seafood and not, as he puts it, “junk fish.” It’s hard to save room for dessert, but you really ought to. A little less “provincial,” the cherry strudel is a delightful Alsatian addition and the lilikoi meringue pays homage to the islands. Dinner entrees run around $20. Breakfast or lunch at La Provençe will set you back no more than $8. Even the non-Francophile will find something to like about this upcountry gem. There’s nothing showy or pretentious about La Provençe. The emphasis is authenticity and quality. You can tell the restaurant is a labor of love for Michelier. It’s all about the food. The beauty comes from its simplicity and friendliness. The dinner menu changes daily, so you may want to ask if there is a fish or vegetarian option when you call for reservations. Honor in Ancient Japan and the Old West A review of Takashi Matsuoka's Cloud of Sparrows I loved Takashi Matsuoka's novel Cloud of Sparrows, but as usual, I loved it for my own twisted reasons. All my life I've read novels and been told that what I see in there is not what the author meant, so I've devoted myself to unearthing unmeant meanings and enjoying them. Those meanings are there, after all, and I enjoy detailing them for others. And for me, Matsuoka's novel is the longest, most violent Zen koan I've ever encountered, for if this novel is not a call to us all to extinguish our egocentric attachment to our individual and luscious personal selves—yes, to poke out our own I's—then, I don't know what it is—except a clear and present movie option for Hollywood. Cloud of Sparrows is about honor, and honor, as a concept, is a preferred human delusion about integrity—how we embody ideals we select for ourselves—and loyalty—to whom we choose to show respect and deference. From a Christian point of view, honor is rooted in pride, the deadliest of the deadly sins; from a Buddhist point of view (if one can be located), honor is rooted in whatever you mean when you say "I," which is to be extinguished. The crucial element here is the least visible: honor erupts from self-importance. Takashi Matsuoka illuminates this theme as he shocks us with the atrocities that honor requires. In fact, Cloud of Sparrows reveals honor as a deadly form of human vanity that destroys our true humanity. Let's examine a few cases, one by one. There is probably no culture more widely regarded as honor-bound than that of Japan. Cloud of Sparrows is set in the Japan of the mid-1800s, and Shigeru is the most feared samurai of his times for his unparalleled skill with weapons and his utter lack of the senses of self-restraint and selfpreservation, which many typically mistake for bravery. Shigeru, however, like many males of his clan, including Lord Genji, his nephew and our protagonist, is cursed with the ability to see the actual approaching horrors of the future (the one, by the way, that we currently inhabit), and he is compelled by his honor to murder his entire family at swordpoint, to hack them to pieces, in order to spare them the grief of living further. Exhibit one: the honorable father works hard to protect his family. No Father's Day cards for Shigeru. Another character through whom Takashi Matsuoka examines the idea of honor is Matthew Stark, an

American gunfighter who, posing as a Christian missionary, travels to Japan. One would think that alone would be sufficient irony, but Stark is also on a mission of honor: a multiple murderer himself, he seeks to avenge the grisly murders of his lover and her two daughters by Ethan Cruz, who was on a mission to avenge the murder of his own whoremaster step-father. Honor demands vengeance: Stark tracks Cruz to a monastery where Cruz, transformed by guilt into the Buddhist monk Jimbo, now resides. Stark empties his pistols point-blank into the face of the prone and wounded Cruz. Exhibit two: the honorable avenger at his appointed rounds shall shoot others to avoid shooting himself. Perhaps, the supreme example of honor is Ethan Cruz, brutal murderer of Stark's family, who has sought and apparently received forgiveness for depravities for which no one has the right to forgive anyone. As a Christian missionary, he has traveled to Japan, only to watch his fellow missionaries die of cholera. At the local monastery, Cruz learns Japanese, studies Zen, and becomes Jimbo. When Stark arrives, Jimbo is enlightened enough to allow Stark to kill him with a vengeance. Cruz's honor apparently demands that he allow Stark to kill him so Stark might transcend the urge to murder and be enlightened. Yet if Cruz-Jimbo is enlightened, or has extinguished his ego, then who exactly does honor demand must die? Exhibit three: the honor of the honorable and now-selfless murderer requires that he become the victim of murder. Honor, as any Greek tragedy reveals, destroys humanity even as the gods giggle. Yes, I love this book, and not only for the tangle of paradoxes it exposes concerning both literary and painfully contemporary issues. If that's not enough, I also found the novel compelling and absorbing. Whether for the delightful, fantastic scenes that speculating on the foreign and the long gone always produces,

or the buzzing intricacies in motivation and plot that such sweeping tales deliver, or the just plain fun of making a Japanese lord clairvoyant enough to see the future from which we reflect on him, this book is well worth reading. I recommend it, and on my honor, I pledge you will enjoy it—or not. MTW

All About Black Jack Black earns commercial cred with indie help Jack Black is a one-man rock ‘n roll powerhouse in this infectious musical comedy directed by Gen X wunderkind Richard Linklater (Slacker, Waking Life). Black plays Dewey Finn, an aging anti-establishment rock guitarist whose band “No Vacancy” fires him over his ridiculous stage antics that include stage dives and 20minute guitar solos. When Dewey intercepts a call for his roommate Ned (Mike White Chuck & Buck) to substitute-teach a 5th grade class at a pricey private school, Dewey decides to pose as Ned for the sake of finally paying his rent. What transpires with Black’s

tremendous performance as a rock music teacher is pure genius. Mike White wrote the peppy screenplay for this crowd-pleasing film that was the toast of the Toronto Film Festival and stands out as the best comedy so far this year. Cole Smithey: There’s a message in the movie of rock music as a way of taking on the Man and it seems like that’s missing these days from rock and from kids’ consciousness. Jack Black: I know, you’ve got Britney saying, “George Bush is the best.” But I guess she’s never claimed to be a rocker so it doesn’t really count. Yeah it’s missing. There’s no real Gods of Rock right now though, even the best

ones like The White Stripes or Queens of the Stone Age. I’ve been listening to this one CD a lot—N.E.R.D. It’s more in the Hip-Hop vein but it’s definitely got some rock in there. I just got turned onto it but I guess it came out in 2001. Someone just gave it to me and I can’t stop listening to it. Then I found out that that Pharrell guy who writes their songs also wrote some Michael Jackson songs and maybe even a Britney Spears song. It blows my mind that he can go back and forth from something so rocking to something so commercial. CS: This is the second time you’ve played a rock aficionado. Would you say you’re more like Barry in High Fidelity or like Dewey in The School of Rock? JB: More like Dewey. This is the closest of any of the roles I’ve played to actually being like me. There are some differences though between Dewey and me. He loves rock even

“I love rock” more than I do. I love rock a lot but he’d never make fun of it like I do. I’ve made a career out of making fun of it and also he’s struggling to make ends meet, and I have a delicious pad in the hills. So there’s some differences there. He’s more like me back before I got a career going, when I was still struggling. CS: You studied drama at UCLA. How was that? JB: I was a theater major and I slept through most of my college experience but I was very involved in the theatrical productions. I met some people and it was fun. It was important that I do it just because I would still be wondering “God, did I miss something by not trying to get a college education?” Now I know that it wasn’t really in me. Doing plays was the only thing I wanted to do there and then I did my own play that I wrote and directed with some friends of mine —”The World of Wrestling.” And that was so much more fun and better than any of the plays that they were doing that I was like “What am I doing here?” So I bailed but I didn’t tell my dad for a few months because the guilt trip was too intense. CS: What’s the funniest thing that happened with the kids on the set while you were filming The School of Rock? JB: I don’t want to say this ‘cause it sounds dumb but one time I cut a really big fart. It was really rude of me but I thought about this thing—one time I was in this movie with Jim Carrey. I had a really small part in The Cable Guy and he slam-dunked the ball in one scene where he’s playing basketball and the whole backboard shattered and he’s laying on the ground in the glass holding the ball and he said something. And when we shot the scene I remember he was laying on the ground and they said “action,” and then “uuuurreeeeeeeerrrruuuhhhhaaaaaaa”—the loudest fart you’ve ever heard. Then he just continued with the scene and then they said “cut” and everyone just broke down laughing so hard and I remember just not laughing, just going “that’s why—there’s a lesson in this that he does not give a shit what you think. That’s why he’s so funny because he’s that free.” It sounds stupid that I learned a lesson from his giant fart. So it was a bit of homage to the master. MTW

Ekolu rocked Hawaii’s airwaves with “Down in the Valley” and “Shores of Waiehu” over the past few years. The three beloved local boys of Ekolu have been creating music for nearly ten years and are now joined by three more musicians. And Nuff Sed has been gaining so much popularity in Maui lately, that it’s damn near impossible to get into Kimo’s in Lahaina whenever they play there—so get to the Rock and get there fast. Chow Fun & Malasadas Thursday through Sunday, at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku Isn’t it really all about the food? I mean, sure, there’ll be carnival rides at the Maui County Fair 2003, as well as arts and crafts, horticulture displays, flower shows, livestock and something called a “lifestyle tent”. They’ll have those cool games where you can win a giant purple stuffed orangutan or something. And yeah, there’s a parade on Thursday. But the grinds are so belly-aching wonderful— such a perfect prelude to the candy aches of Halloween and the oh-I’m-so-full feasts of fall’s holidays— who cares about all those silly ol’ rides anyway?

Seeing Double Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC Two special screenings of Maui Film Festival picks are happening this weekend. The double feature on Sunday starts with an encore presentation of “Winged Migration”—a film with a bird’s eye view of the universe— and concludes with two premiere showings (5 & 7:30 p.m.) of “Swimming Pool”—a sexy little mystery; very French, very noir.

THE DONNAS “SPEND THE NIGHT” There are only a few things about “life on the mainland” that I miss, and going to rock shows is at the top of a short list. I’m talkin’ downing some 40’s, heading to a grungy venue, and rocking your sweaty ass off in front of a wall of Marshall’s! Afterwards stumbling out into the cold street, ears’ ringing as a ghostly apparition of steam rises from your weary form. Then it’s off to Denny’s to critique the show over a grandslam breakfast, oh yeah!!! These are the glorious visions that came to mind when I, (at high volume of course) slid this disc in the player. These four girls bring straight up, kick-ass, oldschool rock with a refreshing reversal of clichéd, sexist, lyrics written by disrespecting male rock pigs. Overall the record is pretty standard stuff, and as I suspected (and verified by a rock confidant) the studio version of The Donnas pales in comparison to the live she-beast. Nevertheless, this will be a nice addition to the CD stack at the tattoo shop, and you should check out their web site, it’s retro cool. One last thing, my money is on The Donnas in a street fight with Good Charlotte any day. Girl power!!! —Atlantic Records 2002 [SPIKE FUQUA]

PORTISHEAD “DUMMY” / REVISITED It’s hard to believe that ten years have gone by since this record was released. Sometime in ‘94 it completely seized control of my stereo for about six months and I’ve listened to it at least once a week since (it’s in my fall asleep pile by the bed). The band swirls a velvet mix of jazz club guitar, bass, and Hammond organ, backed by slow, rhythmic hip hop beats around the haunting vocals of Beth Gibbons. Her voice is so soothing, it’s intoxicating, but not in that “New Age crap” way, its more of a dark, cool, musical valium kinda thing, no really, dim the lights, hit the couch and enjoy the buzz! VARIOUS ARTISTS “VERVE REMIXED 2” This is the second Verve mix of old jazz classics, remixed by contemporary DJ’s that results in a super cool, smooth and styley lounge CD. Generally, I think remixes are pretentious and revamping traditional songs, blasphemous. Why mess with something that’s great as it is, right? But what I like about these Verve CDs—both Remixed and Remixed 2—is that the DJs’ remixes don’t detract from the essence of the song. You can tell that the DJs really love the songs they’re remixing. The resulting electronica twists actually accentuate the songs’ greatness and give them a new vitality. And maybe anything that gets the younger generation to appreciate old-school gems is worth changing perspectives on what’s morally acceptable music-wise, I guess. –Verve Records [SAM CAMPOS]

CELSO FONSECA “NATURAL” Modernizing the traditional, suave Bossa Nova style of the fifties, Celso Fonseca’s golden voice shines on his U.S. debut, Natural. He doesn’t stray too far from the original smoothness of the 1960s virtuosos like Jobim and Gilberto, but definitely updates the genre with a fresh style. His mellow samba tune, “A Origem da Felicidade,” sucked me in and kept me enthralled. Even though I don’t understand exactly what he is saying about alegría–joy–it makes me feel good in any language. A deep bass, interesting percussion and a funky guitar lick make “Meu Samba Torto” captivating. A really cool berimbau (the Capoeira instrument) solo opens and closes the enchanting “Teu Sorriso.” Some beautiful songs in English are also included, but Fonseca’s virtuosity as a singer/songwriter is evident anywhere. —Six Degrees Records [JOE GATTO]

KARSH KALE “LIBERATION” Young producer, composer and musician, Karsh Kale, has become the spokesperson for a truly international music. He deftly blends the music of his Indian heritage with the influences of rock and modern electronic music. His second album, Liberation, creates something new and truly global. The title track gets you feeling free right off the bat. Echoes and dub effects over ethereal Asian chanting build to an intense crescendo on “Instinct.” Beautifully resounding sitars hold together the moody “Analog Mood Swings.” The gorgeous fluid quality of tablas highlight “Milan”; a mellow, elegant epic that expertly uses classical Indian percussion, flute and strings, tied together with modern electronic vibes. Booze, illegal activity, hotel suites and naked girls. Sound like the life of a rock star? Nope. Just me and Jen—and we don’t even play instruments. Well, okay, PIANO, but that doesn’t count. I mean, a piano isn’t very rockstar. Then again, Elton John and Tori Amos play the piano. Still, it all seems so pedestrian… Anyway, I’m referring to last Tuesday, which was Jen’s 27th birthday and ooh, did we celebrate in style! As part of her stunning birthday package, Jen got hooked up with a sweeeet suite in Kaanapali, where all of her girls—including Britt, Sonja, Rachel and myself—partied it up in the lap of luxury. We danced, we sang, we applied makeup on each other, we jumped up and down on the big hotel beds. And yeah, after we downed the bottle of Mandarin Absolut, we got naked and went swimming in the forbidden pools at around 3 a.m. (Surely those “Closed” signs weren’t meant for young, naked women!) We attempted to dodge past the pool cleaners and security, but really, how discreet are five nude and entirely drunk girls at three o’clock in the morning?! We did have much fun, though—careening down the slides and jumping off the faux falls—before we realized that there were very likely hotel security video cameras capturing the whole debaucherous affair. Oh well, be sure to watch for “Girls Gone Wild—the Kaanapali Edition” soon. Another hedonistic birthday bash this month featured a triple threat of three friends all born on the same day— BJ, Rudi and Katy. This particular celebration featured a monster limo, an inflatable pig, an Irish party, gay night, a human cage and pole dancing. And yes, lots of liquor. Lots. Tommy Lee would have been proud. Thanks to Mike and his clan at Mulligan’s in Wailea, we extended our B-day blowout with Kathleen—yet another Virgo vixen—with good ol’ Irish cake and cheer. And Guinness. But we did have the totally insane limo-on-steroids waiting, so we jumped in and headed to the place where men are men and—well, some men are women but, damn! They look good! Anyway, they can all dance. I’m talkin’ ‘bout Ultra Fab Tuesday, a.k.a. gay night at Hapa’s in Kihei. Aside from the queens, us 10 girls accounted for just about all the estrogen in the room. I had no idea how much more fun dancing can be when there’s a pole and cage involved. As Adrianne, BJ, Lynn, Katy and I all fought for our time at the pole, Rudi duked it out with Arge and the other girls at the cage. Strange how all it takes is a few props and a stage for some people to come out of their shell! Oh, and uh, maybe a few vodka cran’s can help, too. We dropped our Kihei friends, John and Darcy, off and the party continued in the limo as we rode back to Lahaina. Suspiciously, nobody can recollect the exact happenings of that later part of the evening, but I have the pictures on file in case anyone needs a refresh. And I’m sure Becky, Sara, Melissa and Randy will attest to whatever stories I make up. After we all bid adieu to our birthday buddies, Adrianne and I polished off the rest of the champagne in the parking lot with some European windsurfers, while Rudi circled around us, maniacally popping wheelies on his bicycle. He still doesn’t know how his tire got so warped. Or where the hell that inflatable pig came from. Hunh. The toilet plunger, though, is safely intact, he’s happy to report.
