LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR LOVES DIRECTIONS, HATES NUTS On your article “No Littering” (Oct. 2): Send a better reporter out to get all the facts and print both sides. I witnessed most of what happened the night Ms. [Joanne] D’Patricia went off on the officer about the cigarette. She was totally out of her mind. It was Lahaina Coolers that called the police on her for causing a disturbance in the business place. When she said [Sergeant Max] Kincaide was the responding officer to the call, she went nuts. My experience with the woman is that she is nuts. Any real writer would have questioned her story more. (1) What are doing “walking down Dickenson” on the way to Taste of Lahaina? (You would be walking “up” Dickenson, not down. Taste of Lahaina is a mile from Dickenson.) (2) In [the third paragraph] she is walking “west on Dickenson” (up Dickenson). (3) Where does the cigarette [incident] happen? I know. And it’s not where she says. (4) Coolers called the police to get her out of there. She saw the police and resisted leaving. I expect more from Maui Time. The police are not perfect in this community, but they are excellent at what they do here by any standards. Let’s have a little more reporting on this nutcase’s background and other things she has been involved with in Lahaina. —Name Withheld

The Editor Responds: Sorry, but Advice Goddess had to go. I had no choice. It was her or me. The call was mine, I made it, and I will have to live with it for

the rest of my life. I thought of replacing her with skiing information or Lottery results or maybe even that stupid comic The Family Circus, but they weren’t available, asked for way too much money or were currently under federal indictment for morals and racketeering charges. So I replaced her with Holoholo Girl, which is pretty much the same deal, except instead of advice it has hot chicks.

ONCE BOOKED 2 LIVE CREW Been away from home for four years...Met you guys when you first landed on Maui, as I was booking talent for the late, great “Lounge” in Haiku. (Yes, I booked 2 Live Crew). Watched you create your new Maui rag, thinking all the while that Maui Time would not last. They didn’t know the island or its people... You succeeded in winning the hearts and minds of the entire island with your publication... Writing and reporting with integrity, olo olos, and a spirit of aloha that obviously existed long before you arrived on the shores of Maui. God I miss you! What happened to Maui Time? Why did you change something that needed no changes?! Now, I just call Uncle Willie if I want da scoop on something going on. He’s got integrity, olo olos, and aloha... Just like Maui Time used to. You really rocked... and we all loved you and your mag. Please start up another... Willie hates it when I call too much! —Randy Sanders, via email

Hope your lawn will finally get that mowing that you obviously needed so desperately that you had to STEAL the equipment from someone else in your Makawao neighborhood. Obviously you needed it more than us since you had the nerve to walk into our property and simply walk out with something that you did not own—nor did you ask to borrow. HURRAY to YOU for your cowardly ways. Remember that in our universe, what goes around, comes around and the Karma you put out is what comes back at you. HAPPY MOWING TO YOU, YOU COWARD!!

Lance Smith Reformed hack

Lance Smith, the 43-year-old author of new novel set in the South called That Dog Don’t Hunt, lives in Kihei and mostly spends his time writing and surfing. But Smith is also a former B-movie scriptwriter who’s had to endure drug lords, exorcisms and crazy Australians to get movies made. I grew up in Savannah, Georgia. It’s a crazy little town, but a great place for a writer. People there start drinking at 11 and they’re in bars by 14. It was a lot like New Orleans, with European style decadence. When I was a kid I worked in a bus station, which was great because Savannah is halfway between New York and Miami, so we had a lot of people coming through. At the station I once saw a guy get shot in the head. Another time I saw the cops bust a guy in drag who used to hold up 7-Elevens with a sawed off shotgun. That was a great job. In 1983, I went to AFI, when it was still a professional school—there were no grades, but the criticism was intense. They taught the 1940s style narrative, which focused on the story. Two of my instructors were studio writers who’d been blacklisted. I loved having that connection to Old Hollywood. I wrote my first movie, Munchies, at 25 for Roger Corman. He said, “Write something that’s just like Gremlins.” So I did. Then he came back and said, “Okay, it’s too much like Gremlins.” But it eventually became the biggest videocassette seller of the 1980s. The Hollywood Reporter said it had moments of brilliance but no one told the director it was a joke. Of course, I hated the movie. People are always cursing Roger, but he gave us jobs when no one else would. He’s actually a very professional, very conservative guy. He always paid me on time. I wrote a “G-String epic” called Barbarian Queen 2 for him, too. I never saw it. I can’t really write sword fights—they don’t happen in my own life. But Roger told me to take the battle scenes from Barbarian Queen 1, The Warrior and the Sorcerer, and Deathstalker 1 and 2 and then write a 60-page script connecting them all. It ended up being Wizards of the Lost Kingdom 2, which I’ve also never seen. People think B-movies are sleazy, but independent films are way sleazier. They are constantly hustling for money—getting agents to believe you’ve got money when in fact you want to use their talent to raise money. You end up making $2 an hour if you’re lucky. In 1993, I wrote an existential melodra-

ma called The Crew starring Viggo Mortensen. I actually wrote my second novel about the making of this movie, because it was way more interesting than the movie itself. It was shot in South Bimini in the Bahamas, which has lots of drug lords and big time smuggling and lots of people die there. The hotel where we stayed had lots of photographs of Ernest Hemingway machine-gunning fish from his boat. We were filming on this 50-foot boat once owned by the king of Spain, and the DEA overflew us, then raided us with these stealth boats. They thought we were smuggling. One night Viggo said, “You know what’s happening at 3 a.m., don’t you? Speedboats are coming into the channel and dropping off coke! Let’s film it!”

THE HOTEL CUT OUR ELECTRICITY AND TOOK OUR LIQUOR AND THEN SOMEONE BLEW UP OUR WATER SUPPLY. I told him no. So he said, “Fine, let me film it!” I did watch the smuggling with him, and we saw the Coast Guard looking for them, but they were 10 miles out, nowhere near the smugglers. Later one of the guys on the crew, the only Australian I’ve ever hated, was taking pictures of drug lords on the island for the DEA in exchange for a green card. But the drug lords found out and came to us and said if they catch any of us shooting pictures of them again they would “kill us all.” About a third of the crew were right-wing Christians who thought the Bimini Reef Club was haunted. So they did exorcisms, even on our last day. Then one day our marine unit rescued some Cuban refugees who’d escaped from a Bahamian jail. The marine crew leader was Captain Jack, who had been a Navy Seal. He knew everything about the ocean but he was real anti-communist, so he gave them gas and food and a terrible boat and told where they could hit dry land on the Florida coast. I have no idea if they made it. One day a drug lord rowed by our boat by in a little dinghy with two Bahamians. They went around a bend, I heard a bunch of gunshots, and then only two of them came back. Then the drug lord came aboard and offered to buy our boat, which we didn’t own. The last few days of shooting were the Fall of Saigon. The hotel cut our electricity and took our liquor and then someone blew up our water supply. We had to use buckets to get water out of the miserable saltwater pool to make our toilets flush. The film eventually opened in Seattle, and won the Audience Award at the Sao Paolo Film Festival. But Live Entertainment hated the film and fired the executive producer who green-lighted it. I’m so sick of the film industry. MTW

MONDAY, SEPT. 29

TUESDAY, SEPT. 30

The Federal Aviation Administration announces that kiteboarders can no longer use the airspace near Kahului Airport. Some nonsense about not wanting large high-flying kites near departing jet airliners. Of course, this particular airspace happens to be the best kiteboarding spot in the whole world. Kiteboarders, for their part, are outraged… It’s getting so you can’t go 20 minutes without an update on the mysterious “Big Cat” that’s terrorizing Olinda. Now we get word the oft feared, rarely seen creature may be in Waiakoa. Apparently, two women saw a black, seven-foot long animal with yellow-green eyes cross the road in front of them. Two other women in Waiakoa say something—perhaps the Big Cat—killed their goats. And with Be Kind to Farm Animals Day coming up! All this seems to jive with officials’ warnings that the animal might have moved to a “Big Gulch” to elude the search teams fanning out across the island. Oh wait, there are no search teams. There were a couple forest guys with night vision equipment, but they saw nothing… The Fox program American Idol comes to Honolulu! Hundreds, no—thousands—of wannabe singers crowd Aloha Stadium for a chance to meet dipstick host and Los Angeles radio jock Ryan Seacrest and maybe get yelled at by that limey jerk. You know, what is the sudden fascination with TV shows coming to Hawaii? What’s next, COPS?

Am I good or what? COPS, the Fox program that’s done more to change White America’s view of Black males than anything since Amos & Andy, announces today that they’ll spend the next eight weeks on Maui, filming our bad boys in blue. Eight weeks?! This is the Maui PD, we’re talking about, right? Are you sure—eight weeks? You think Fox can come up with enough stuff in eight weeks to fill an entire episode? I mean, with stuff other than rooster fights and tackling fake-weed dealers on mopeds. Wow. It takes three Maui police cars to pull over a speeder out here. I mean, they shot a couple guys the other month, but other than that, I really don’t see a lot of “Fox Attitude” in those guys—except for that one officer who allegedly attacked that woman who yelled at him in Lahaina Town after he dropped a cigarette in the street… The Pacific Whale Foundation is ordered to pay $5,000 for illegally carrying out whale research. Wha?! Those guys do research? I thought they just ran a whale watching tour boat for the rubes.

Hey, is it bad luck to drive over one of those little Myna Birds when you’re on your way to work? Really? I mean, they hop all over the road, jumping in front of cars and… look, I’m just saying… But it’s not good, right? Uh huh. And what if instead of “Myna Bird,” I actually meant “tourist?”

FRIDAY, OCT. 3 Boy, did that kiteboarding/FAA fight blow up and bust real quick? Wow, guess those kiteboarders have friends in Washington for the FAA to fold up faster than Eastern Airlines. In any case, the FAA now says the old waiver allowing kiteboarding near the airport can continue, though there is now a larger “no kite zone” near Runway 2… At long last, after years of begging and pleading and angry calls and letters and more than one secret plot involving oily rags and gas cans, Gordon Biersch finally announces that its Garlic Fries are finally for sale in the frozen food section of all Costco stores in Hawaii. They’re already on the mainland, even rising to be—if you can believe the good Gordon Biesch publicists— the “number-one-selling specialty food concession” at Pac Bell Park in San Francisco. And Gordon Biersch is quite the Renaissance man. Remember, the guy isn’t just known for garlic fries—he did spend many years playing Mr. Carlson on WKRP, which had to be one of the funniest shows in the 1970s. Remember the time when Carlson was worried that the other radio show guys might be having sex in the halls? Or the time Johnny Fever thought he heard God talking to him? Or the… what? Oh, that was Gordon Jump? So who the hell is Gordon Biersch?

SATURDAY, OCT. 4 means a room full of orchids! And giant pumpkins! Don’t forget the psycho gamecocks, panting rabbits and bulls with giant testicles! Or the great Maui Police booth with that big display case with all the drugs and batu pipes and such! Oh, the fair! So many locals. So many creaky, scary rides. So much great food: POG, deep-fried Twinkies, Spring Rolls, sushi-by-the-bag, Smoke Meat Plate— mmmmm… smoke meat plate. Oh, the magic of the Maui County Fair. Why, oh why does it only last four days?

Three of the four Maui American Idol finalists wash out. One looks like a possible winner, but man, things happen fast in Hollywood. This would, under normal circumstances, be something of a tragedy, except for this little revelation in today’s Maui News: “The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau said it paid $30,000 to bring American Idol to the islands.”

America’s Main Course: Humble Pie How to withdraw from the Iraq disaster Haughty as it was, George W. Bush’s request for United Nations help in Iraq deserves credit. It is, after all, his first tacit acknowledgement that his war is a fiscal, political and military catastrophe. Democrats and Republicans differ on how much command authority to cede to the U.N., but everyone agrees that we should replace as many of our besieged occupation troops as possible with peacekeepers from other nations. For the first time since 9/11, Americans are on the same page. Common sense is back: Bush’s popularity ratings are at a record low. People finally understand that this war is killing too many and costing too much. (The original Congressional estimate of $50-$60 billion has mushroomed to $87 billion—and that’s just for a few months. Another five years of occupation could run more than half a trillion dollars.) Unless something changes fast in a big way, there’s no end in sight. “It reminds me of Vietnam,” Marine General Anthony Zinni, former head of U.S. Central Command, says. But we don’t have to keep on keeping on. We can get out of Iraq early, save lives, and reduce antiAmericanism around the world. But we’ll have to do something new. Let’s apologize! Here’s how: “Being American has meant never having to say ‘you’re sorry,’” Bush should tell the U.N. “We’ve long been powerful enough to do as we please. “But a great country must learn from its mistakes. And we are brave enough to admit that we made a mistake in Iraq. The invasion was the result of a terrible error in judgment. We relied on intelligence that convinced us that Saddam Hussein represented a grave threat to the security of the world, but that information turned out to be out-of-date. Experts warned us that Iraq might fall apart after we deposed its tyrant, but we were in denial, dismissing our critics as partisan foes. We convinced ourselves that liberation would naturally yield to democracy. We were wrong. Instead, it created a power vacuum. Worst of all, in our rush to protect our own nation in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, we jeopardized the most important principle of international security, that of freedom from unprovoked attacks, respect for self-determination and national sovereignty. “I wish I could bring back the 300 American servicemen and the thousands of Iraqis who died as the result of our horrible mistake. “As a Christian, I believe that one is required to make penance for his sins. That means doing as much as one can to reverse the damage one has caused. “First, we must rebuild Iraq’s economy

and provide real security so that its people can rebuild their society. “Unfortunately, our occupation force is composed of the same American soldiers who killed and maimed innocent Iraqis during the invasion, and whose swaggering presence continues to provoke anger. ‘We should have been culturally sensitive,’ a Special Forces officer admitted to Time magazine. ‘We should never have gone into people’s houses. Saddam’s soldiers never went into houses. We don’t understand how things work around here.’ It’s too late to make a good first impression. Not only do the Iraqi people resent our soldiers, they’ve become the targets of Islamist extremists from other countries. The longer they stay, the worse things will become—for them, for us, for the people of Iraq. Should the international community agree, we propose the withdrawal of every last American soldier from Iraq. They should be replaced by 400,000 U.N. peace-

WE CONVINCED OURSELVES THAT LIBERATION WOULD NATURALLY YIELD TO DEMOCRACY. WE WERE WRONG. keepers—ideally led by those from Arabicspeaking countries—to police the streets. We ask for no control and no input in this operation. Send us the bill. We’ll pay whatever it costs, for as long as it takes. “Second, we will compensate whatever Iraqi government ultimately emerges from the U.N. mandate for the damage we’ve caused to infrastructure and public buildings. U.S. companies will be prohibited from doing business in Iraq. “Third, we will issue generous compensation packages to the families of individuals who died or otherwise suffered injury at the hands of U.S. forces. We know that it won’t bring back loved ones, but it’s a gesture of our true regret. “Finally, those who wage war before attempting to resolve conflicts through diplomatic means must face personal responsibility for their actions. Therefore, I will immediately turn myself, my vice president, the officials of my cabinet and certain members of Congress over to the international tribunal at The Hague for prosecution for war crimes in connection with our illegal invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. In accordance with this decision, I hereby resign the office of President of the United States, and respectfully await instructions from Secretary Annan as to where to present myself for surrender. “May God bless you, and may He forgive me and my country.” MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD STUPID CATS Renewing a debate, Czech scientist Jaroslav Flegr reported in September that human infection by Taxoplasma gondii (to which cat owners are vulnerable as they clean litter boxes) tends to make women “reckless” and “friendly” and men “jealous” and “morose.” Though any mammal could pass the toxins, cats that handle dead birds, bugs or mice rather easily pass it in their stools, though only for a few days after their first infection. (A 2001 report by researchers from Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland had suggested that such infections might even cause schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.)

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US For a September report, an LA Weekly writer hung out with Benji Breitbart, 20, Doug Marsh, and several other “Disneyana enthusiasts,” who spend hours nearly every single day at Disneyland; have almost total recall of the park’s history and culture; rabidly collect memorabilia; and preach with intensity on which aspects of today’s park Walt Disney would not have approved. DE’s usually wear Disney-themed clothes; use the pronoun “we” as if the park were theirs; and are dismissive of the obsessives of “Star Trek.” (“Trekkies are devoted to some stupid pop-culture fad,” said Marsh, but “Disney fans believe in the magic.”) Why, Breitbart was asked, was Disney such a central force in his life? “I tried to figure that out. I just ended up with no answers.”

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE According to two maintenance workers on duty in Cleveland’s Carver Park Estates in September, James Black, 49, either boldly or obliviously dragged a dead,

bloody body out of his apartment house in broad daylight and laid it on the ground in plain sight of the two men, then calmly went back inside and emerged with a mop, which he used to swab blood from the sidewalk. The incredulous workers immediately called police, who arrested Black and the next day charged him with aggravated murder.

INEXPLICABLE A man fled the motor vehicles office in Leesburg, Va., after a September incident in which he, silently and calmly, presented a DMV employee with a postcard photograph of a banana being shot by a bullet, and the legend “banana=DMV.” The man then hurried out, and when several employees got to the parking lot in pursuit, there were bananas strewn around the lot but no one in sight. Said the Leesburg police chief, “This (man) is a different (kind).”

LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE A 26-year-old man will be hospitalized “for months” in Illawarra, Australia, following an August accident that authorities speculate might have been inspired by the film Jackass. The man was apparently walking across a room with a lighted firecracker between his posterior cheeks when he slipped and fell backward to the floor. The explosion resulted in a fractured pelvis, severe genital burns, hemorrhaging from the buttocks and ruptured urethra, leaving him incontinent and sexually dysfunctional.

IN THE LAST MONTH Canadian military police seized 983 marijuana plants being grown by squatters on an active, 17-square-mile artillery range (Nicolet, Quebec). On the first day of a Philippine citizens’ group’s campaign to expose government officials who spend public funds on their mistresses, more than 500 tips came in to its hotline.

Racing Through the Pineapple Fields They’re speeding through the tight, twisting trails of a pineapple field, brakes squealing as they hit a turn, kicking up clouds of dust as they accelerate downhill. Someone’s account of a late night, four wheel drive adventure? No, it’s just the Pauwela Off-Road Duathlon, which was held Sunday, October 5. This event was the race’s fourth, organized as always by the Maui Multi Sports Club. The race wound downhill through the pineapple fields below the Haiku Community Center. The race’s start line— and finish line, actually—sat on the cliffs overlooking the deep blue Pacific Ocean. For many of the local racers, including the top finishers, the event served as a tune-up and checkout for the upcoming Xterra Off Road Triathlon World Championships, to be held later this month on a very tough course through Wailea and Makena. For others it was just a fun, active and challenging way to spend a Sunday morning. Maui’s multi-sport community is diverse, bringing out athletes who spend their workweek in a variety of disparate ways. There is Kainoa Guerin, who spends much of his day in high school and Donnie McGean who manages to fit his training time in while running Hawaiian Moons, his Kihei-based health food store. Jerry Stowe, who also serves as the race director for the King’s Trail Triathlon, telecommutes to his job with software company Intuit. Somehow he finds time to train and keep himself in

shape, as does Marianne Loach, who moonlights as a nurse at Maui Memorial. More than one of her medical colleagues have already deemed her workout and racing activities “kinda crazy.” The duathlon combines running and biking. Sunday’s race was a five-loop affair, beginning with a 3.4 mile run. The course climbs up from the cliffs toward Haiku, where it runs parallel to the Hana Highway before weaving along the edge of the pineapple fields, back down towards the ocean for the end of the first loop. Most of the racers competed as individuals, but a few specialists banded together into teams, with some members dedicated to the two run legs while others hopped on their bikes and took on the middle portion of the race. It was during those three mountain bike legs that it really seemed to get hot. I mean, really hot. The sun was relentless as it climbed overhead, and got worse with each lap. To make matters worse, the course offered virtually no shade for the competitors. At least the trade winds resumed, giving a welcome breeze to the racers as they sped through the fields. Brutal as it was, had the race been held a week earlier when the trades were noticeably absent, it would have been far worse. Comparatively, the downhill portion of the course was ridiculously easy, with only minimal pedaling involved. It was a quick trip back down—but then again, each rider had to do it all over and climb back up again, making a total of just over 10 miles. Once done with the bike section of the course, the by-now extremely dirty racers laced up their running shoes once again for the final

loop, another 3.4 miles running under the broiling sun. It was during this climb back up toward Hana Highway when a few racers began making a strong push, a few of which passed some of the slower cyclists as they powered uphill, still mired in the event’s middle legs. Despite the unrelenting heat, many of the competitors picked up their pace in an attempt for a quick finish. Huddling under the shelter of small tents at the finish line, the fastest of the fast watched as others finished, some scraped and covered with dirt after taking a spill on the bike. People cheered, gave out awards and gener-

MAUI or BUST KOKO the ‘Talking’ Gorilla is coming to paradise A little east from Kaanapali, 1,400 feet up the slopes of the West Maui Mountains, is a 70-acre swath of gorgeous ocean-view hillside once part of the vast Maui Land and Pineapple holdings. It will be the home of a very special resident, one who needs lots of research facilities, staff housing and communication centers, to say nothing of tropical jungle and brush. The resident, overdue by a couple years now, is Koko the Gorilla, the greatest American circus act since P.T. Barnum showcased Jumbo the Elephant. Koko, for those who don’t read National Geographic or watch PBS or late night talk shows, is—as her handlers like to say—the “world’s most famous ape.” Her claim to fame is that she supposedly communicates with American Sign Language (ASL). She knows and uses over a thousand words, say her handlers at the San Francisco-based Gorilla Foundation. But right now she’s living in a tiny Bay Area gorilla preserve. The Foundation wants Koko in a new $10 million gorilla sanctuary on Maui because “the tropical climate of the site is similar to the natural habitat of the endangered gorillas of central Africa.” Since one of the key Foundation Board members is Mary Cameron Sanford, who is also a trustee of the Maui Land and Pineapple fortunes, finding land in West Maui was no big deal. The problem is that no one’s certain when the Wonder Gorilla will actually move here. The Foundation failed to raise enough money to meet its 2002 projected opening date, and has yet to construct even a single building on the site. “There’s not a whole lot to report,” said Lorraine Slater, the Foundation’s development

director. “We’re in the quiet phase of our capital campaign. Our goal is to raise an additional $3 million. We’re not ready to be definitive, but we’ll have some updates in three to four weeks. But have no fear—the Foundation insists that Koko will soon be here. “This refuge will provide a climatologically suitable home for Koko, her 20-year-old male gorilla partner Ndume and their potential offspring,” said a press release sent out by Koko’s handlers celebrating the gorilla’s 31st birthday last year. “In the future, it is also envisioned that other apes in need of a safe haven may find a home there.” While it’s true that the Foundation raises awareness around the world for the plight of endangered African gorillas, it’s also true that the whole Koko story is basically just bad theater. Gorillas, apes, chimpanzees and any other non-human animals can’t use language. They don’t use it in the wild and can’t learn it. Not now, not ever. A gorilla speaking a language would be as stupefying as a man getting airborne by flapping his arms. What’s amazing about the Koko-can-speak story is that it’s so old. Scientists and linguistics experts have been criticizing Koko’s handlers for over 20 years in scientific journals and books, yet the damned ape keeps appearing on the Tonight Show and Nature and all these magazines and fawning newspaper articles and, of course, that crazy AOL online Chat thing a few years ago. But why should something so insignificant as scientific evidence get in the way of a good show? Koko likes kittens! Koko likes people! Koko likes to paint! Koko can talk! She can— really, she can! Talk, talk, talk!

By Anthony Pignataro It would have been more dramatic if humanity had found Koko roaming some African jungle, shaking her fists at the other stupid, stupid gorillas for not listening to her, but that’s a bit too much to ask. In fact, Koko has never been to Africa. Instead, Koko was born on the Fourth of July, 1971, in the San Francisco Zoo. The zookeepers named her Hanabi-Ko, which is Japanese for “Fireworks Child.” Later nicknamed Koko, the gorilla almost immediately fell ill. It was while recuperating that Koko first attracted the attention of a young, wideeyed Stanford University graduate student named Francine G. “Penny” Patterson, then at the zoo researching developmental psychology. Within a year, Patterson began teaching Koko American Sign Language (ASL). In 1981, Patterson recounted her unique, often ambiguous experiences with Koko in the book The Education of Koko. “A visitor recently stopped by to see Koko,” wrote Patterson in the beginning of the first chapter. “On greeting the 180-pound gorilla, the visitor pointed to her and then made a small circle with her open hand in the air in front of her own face, signing You’re pretty. Koko digested this comment for a moment and then stroked her finger across her nose; her reply meant false or fake.” Patterson’s decision to lead her book with such a strange anecdote—the good doctor admits in the next paragraph that she really didn’t know what Koko was doing—is striking. For the rest of “Project Koko,” as she came to calling her work with the gorilla, Patterson has faced criticism ridicule from virtually the entire linguistic community—namely, that Koko can’t communicate and Patterson simply reads too much into the gorilla’s gestures. But that hasn’t stopped her or the Foundation from making extraordinary claims about their gorilla: “Koko has a working vocabulary of over 1000 signs,” states a Foundation release. “Koko understands approximately 2000 words of spoken English. Koko initiates the majority of conversations with her human companions and typically constructs statements averaging three to six words. Koko has a tested IQ of between 70 and 95 on a human scale, where 100 is considered ‘normal.’” Today, Koko stands five feet tall and weighs about 300 pounds. She is enormously popular around the world. There was the Sept. 22, 2000 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story titled “Crazy ‘bout Koko,” which predicted Koko would be in Maui by 2002. There was that big article on Koko and Patterson in Biography Magazine four years ago, and the big PBS/Nature show “A Conversation with Koko” that same year. There was the photo of Koko cuddling a kitten that appeared in National Geographic some years back. In 1979, Michael Crichton expanded the Koko story considerably into his novel Congo, which was later adapted into a dreadful 1995 movie staring Laura Linney and Tim Curry. And it’s not just pop culture that latched onto Koko the Talking Ape. Even the late science writer and astronomer Carl Sagan—who

used to trumpet the mantra “Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence”—fell under Koko’s spell. “It does not appear to me out of the question that, after a few generations in such a verbal chimpanzee community, there might emerge the memoirs of the natural history and mental life of a chimpanzee, published in English or Japanese,” wrote Sagan in his 1979 book The Dragons of Eden. Thirteen years later, Sagan went a step further, writing in Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors that linguists like Thomas Sebeok and Noam Chomsky—top men in the field of language—“merely asserted that apes cannot use language, and then dismissed evidence to the contrary because it contradicted their assumption.” In any case, all that publicity translated into big bucks for the Koko Foundation. Tax records show the Foundation took in an astonishing $2.07 million in 2001. The vast majority of the money came in the form of tax-deductible contributions, but there was also $73,196 brought in from the sales of Koko items: books, videos, CDs, plush toys, glossy photos, earrings, charms, necklaces and limited edition digital reproductions of Koko’s paintings—recently price-slashed from $475 to a bargain $350. Indeed, late 2002 was a hot time for anyone wanting to get a Koko knickknack. Sept. 28 saw a sale of Koko’s original paintings at a Lakewood, New Jersey theater. A couple weeks later, the Foundation released Fine Animal Gorilla, a CD of music about Koko, using some of her words as lyrics. At the same time, the Gold Dragon Gallery in Tampa, Florida began selling prints of Koko. “Royalties and sales of photos of the organization’s gorillas, books about them, and stuffed toys and other items representing them directly further the public’s appreciation and understanding of gorillas,” declares the Foundation in its tax records. The view that Koko can’t use language comes from academia’s most respected linguists. Koko is just conditioned to make hand gestures to get treats, they say, which handlers like Patterson interpret as ASL. Basically, Patterson is seeing what she wants to see. Here are a few of academia’s best assessments of Koko’s linguistic skills:

• “If a gorilla makes a gesture, the trainers see a positive response that they were looking for.” Jim Swanson, Professor of Linguistics, Dakota State University • “[H]uman language… is outside of the capacities of other species.” Noam Chomsky, linguist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology • “[N]onsense.” the late Thomas Seboek, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics, University of Indiana Then there is Steven Pinker. One of the foremost experts on language in the world, Pinker is currently the Johnstone Family Professor of

Psychology at Harvard University. He’s written nine books on language, 54 scientific journal articles, 34 book chapters, 36 popular press articles and 14 book reviews. His resume runs 13 pages and includes dozens of grants, academic positions and awards. In 1994, Pinker took on Patterson and other chimp-can-talk researchers with The Language Instinct, a large but accessible book outlining his view that language evolved in humans just like any other body part. “Language is obviously as different from other animals’ communication systems as the

tion before its members can display a useful skill, like some bird that could not fly until given a human education, is far from humble!” The Foundation’s official line is that any criticism of Koko is “dated”—“rehashed” in the press from time to time, but made irrelevant by recent progress. Nevermind that none of the above-cited professors and researchers ever backed away from their views. But more importantly, the best, most recent illustration of Koko’s complete lack of language skills comes from Koko herself.

OVER TWO DECADES OF SIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION BEHIND HER, AND THE MOST COMPLEX “SENTENCE” KOKO COULD STRING TOGETHER WAS “THAT FINE EAT KNOW GIVE ME.” elephant’s trunk is different from other animals’ nostrils,” wrote Pinker, who also pointed out that Patterson and the Gorilla Foundation “have distanced themselves from the community of scientific discourse for over a decade. “[T]he apes did not ‘learn American Sign Language,’” Pinker added. “This preposterous claim is based on the myth that ASL is a crude system of pantomimes and gestures rather than a full language with complex phonology, morphology and syntax. In fact, the apes had not learned any true ASL signs.” No one really knows how or why language began. There’s evidence that it traces back to four million year-old Australopithecus Man, but scientists aren’t certain. Natural selection seems the best engine for the development of language over the millennia, but again, there is uncertainty. What is certain, says Pinker, is that all the available research points to language being a uniquely human trait. We use language because we have language centers wired into our brains, the same way birds fly because they have wings. It’s why humans are the only animals that use language in their natural habitats. Remember that language is incredibly complex. Language requires grammar, syntax, inflections, roots, stems and auxiliaries. Take away those precise rules, and all you’ve got are grunts or gestures endlessly repeated—pretty much how animals other than humans communicate. Of course, this analysis doesn’t mix at all with the well-meaning but terribly misguided attempts to minimize humanity’s uniqueness in nature. In fact, as Pinker has written, such attempts are actually the epitome of arrogance. “What an irony it is that the supposed attempt to bring Homo sapiens down a few notches in the natural order has taken the form of us humans hectoring another species into emulating our instinctive form of communication, or some artificial form we have invented, as if that were the measure of biological worth,” wrote Pinker in The Language Instinct. “In fact, the idea that some species need our interven-

On April 28, 1998—a month before Matt Nisbet wrote a critical piece on Koko for the Amherst, New York-based Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal—Koko and Patterson participated in an “historic” AOL online chat. It was the fifthmost popular chat in AOL’s history—less popular than Michael Jordan, but ahead of Howard Stern. As you read the following excerpts, keep in mind that all this was done at Patterson’s insistence and, when it occurred, Koko supposedly had 25 years of ASL instruction:

“herself” has taught “lips,” perhaps. So there are a couple interpretations there. A “couple interpretations?” To a yes or no question? The whole chat went on like that. No grammar, no syntax, no conversation at all—just words used and misused with agonizing repetition—assuming, of course, that Koko was actually signing. At no time did the gorilla ever initiate a discussion. Over two decades of sign language instruction behind her, and the most complex “sentence” Koko could string together was “That fine eat know give me.” Of course, the chat’s real theatrics came from Patterson, as she constantly jumped in with her explanations of Koko’s gibberish. Incredibly, at one point the AOL attendant actually claimed Koko is probably smarter than humans. “Exactly!” said Patterson. “She has learned our language but we haven’t learned hers.” On Oct. 12, 2000, Hawaiian priests using traditional digging sticks performed a “ground blessing” ceremony on the land that will house the Allan G. Sanford Preserve. The “gorillacentric” sanctuary is named for the late son of Mary Cameron Sanford, who is a Gorilla Foundation board member and director emeritus of the Maui Land and Pineapple

Patterson: Koko, are you going to have a baby in the future? Koko: Koko love eat… sip. Question: Do you like to chat with people? Koko: Fine nipple. Patterson: Nipple rhymes with people, she doesn’t sign people per se, she was trying to do a “sounds like…”

Co., which is leasing the land to the Foundation for $138,000 a year. Of course, the preserve will be off-limits to the general public—Koko doesn’t like visitors, Patterson has said. But the special Visitors Center will be open for business. And that means even more tourist bucks coming our way. “Koko will become very important to the Aloha State,” one Foundation press release quoted Hawaii State Senator and Gorilla Foundation board member Avery B. Chumbley as saying. “Maui is proud this important Sanctuary for gorillas will be located here, and a virtual visit with Koko at the planned high-tech Visitor Center will certainly be another compelling reason for people from around the world to visit Maui.” When it opens, of course. Phase One, which includes a half-acre gorilla habitat, a staff building, two small buildings capable of housing three gorilla families each, a quarantine enclosure and a “communication pagoda” to “facilitate interspecies communication research and provide video feed to the Visitor Center,” is still under construction. Phase Two, which could take an additional five years to finish, will add more enclosures, buildings and communication pagodas. “Funding is the primary issue,” said Lance Weisal, managing director of Sterling Development Services. For a few months in late 2002, Weisal managed construction of the sanctuary—a job he said his company did without compensation because the Foundation “is such a great organization. “They did start construction,” he said. “They poured the foundation for the first half-acre enclosures. They’ve done all the grading and utilities installation. They’ve made a lot of progress in terms of infrastructure. They just have to hunker down and raise money.” If the slowness of the move has pissed off Koko, she hasn’t said anything.

Question: What are the names of your kittens? Koko: Candy give me. Patterson: Would you like to go to Hawaii? Koko: Look. Patterson: Have you taught other gorillas to sign? Koko: Myself lip. Patterson: She taught herself. That’s really true, too. That’s very good and I think what part of that answer might be is that she’s taught us. In other words, “myself lip” was her answer and “lip” is her word for woman. So

So appetizing...

Specializing in wedding video production & photography

The other day I was playing tourist in my best aloha shirt and fancy sandals at Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café in Wailea. At the bar, I couldn’t help overhearing the ladies to my right talk about the conch shell chandeliers. You’d think that after a couple of Vinny Barbarini martinis, two girls could find something juicier to discuss. But I didn’t have much time to ponder their conversation because the quintessential Tommy Bahama’s man—and my boss—Dr. Charles sat beside me. Enjoying a night out while his wife was away, he sported a signature Tommy ribbed tee (no lie, I checked the tag!). I couldn’t help but notice the bartender’s smile turn to smirk upon recognizing another regular. This restaurant chain claims to be the “Purveyor of Island Lifestyles,” but I don’t think they have the general Hawaiian population in mind. Located amongst the posh Shops at Wailea, the restaurant is next to a retail store that competes with the Fendi’s, Coach’s, and Tiffany & Co.’s by offering $170 bathrobes and $92 wooden monkeys. The drink menu features lots of specialty and frozen drinks, martinis and wine. But my meal began with one of their house brews, the Bungalow Blonde. Served on its own custom coaster, it was refreshing, though I haven’t ever really disliked a beer. Or a blonde, for that matter. At Dr. Charles’ suggestion, I had to try the Treasure Quay Ahi appetizer. “It’s the best,” he said. “You gotta cut it up and mix it like a salad.” Who am I to argue with the doctor? Basically it’s blackened ahi seared rare, layered with arugula, green papaya pickle [?] and wonton crackers, ribboned with sweet soy glaze and wasabi aioli. Should I dine here again I’ll take two of these and call it a

night. The mac-nut encrusted Big Island Goat Cheese, served warm with a mango salsa, chili crostini and—once again—the sweet soy glaze, wasn’t bad, either. Besides nightly specials, Tommy Bahama’s offers fish, chicken, pork, pasta, ribs, as well as shrimp and scallops—each under the disguise of some catchy tropical name. Craving a steak, I opted for the Island Cowboy, cooked medium rare over spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. No complaints here—the fillet was tender and filling. Bartender Sarah wouldn’t let me leave without trying a dessert. So I got the Piña Colada Cake. It’s a moist vanilla layer cake with Myers Dark Rum and chopped pineapple, covered with white chocolate mousse, toasted coconut, and served with a mango sauce. It did me right, as did she with her honest-to-a-fault suggestions. If you want a straight answer about what to order, she’s the one. She explained that Tommy Bahama’s “rivals some of the fancier spots on the island without the stuffy atmosphere” and that the chain was founded under the slogan “Relax.” The food was good, but a place like this is more than simply cuisine. The restaurant features live music nightly and has outdoor patio seating with panoramic views of Kaho’olawe, Molokini and Lanai. Play it right guys, and you can watch Sportscenter on one of two screens at the bar while your date enjoys a spectacular sunset. Of course, the full Tommy Bahama’s experience wouldn’t be complete without a pit stop to the bathroom. Take your time—it’s one of the finest around. Yeah, my cover was blown. After you live here a while it’s hard to get away with playing tourist. So as the doctor’s conversation drifted towards the lofty topic of cow tipping, I quietly made my exit. Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café is located in the Shops at Wailea. Open daily from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., with live guitar from 6 to 10 p.m. Call 875-9983. MTW

Serious Wit

Margaret Edsen’s play comes to the Iao Theater Liz Janes-Brown once told director David Johnston that she’d shave her head for him if he’d ever cast her as Vivian in Wit. Now she’s bald and very happy about it. A few years back, she read Margaret Edsen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play and felt immediately drawn to the main character—an English Literature professor who comes to terms with cancer. But she examines the poet’s work with a new lens once she realizes that her wit and clinical distance won’t help her grapple with the big questions which come with a lifethreatening illness. In a flashback, Vivian’s mentor, played by Katherine Hartwig Dahl, suggests she read Donne’s poetry for the passion it embodies, rather than its technical brilliance. This conversation becomes a metaphor for the character’s struggle to grow out of her intellectual shell to become a fully feeling human being. “Anyone who’s ever gone through an illness or lost anyone will relate to this,” Johnston said. “But it’s really about the struggle between the mind and the heart.” Although the subject is heady, the play is filled with humor and, ultimately, a lifeaffirming message that leaves audience

tudes of the medical staff assigned to her case. Paul Janes-Brown, Liz’s husband, plays Vivian’s attending physician. Both Paul and Liz are also columnists for the Maui News. They met when they were working together in Company here on Maui a few years ago and have since shared the stage a number of times. “We love working together,” Janes-Brown said. “Otherwise we’d never see each other!” The cast also includes Nicholas Vaky in the role of the young upstart Dr. Jason Posner and Karen Stavash as the compassionate nurse Susie Monahan. It’s Nurse Monahan who serves as a model of simplicity and kindness for Vivian. As the relationship between the two women grows, Vivian finds her detached, composed persona breaking away piece-by-piece. Both Janes-Brown and Margaret Edsen’s play gained wide media attention in 2001 when it was adapted for HBO with Academy Award winner Emma Thompson in the leading role and Mike Nichols directing. Janes-Brown and Johnston hope to draw crowds to the theater during the play’s threeweekend run to experience the power of serious drama. They feel strongly that dramatic theater has a place here on Maui and that the genre offers more than mere entertainment. “If it teaches you something, that’s much more valuable,” said Janes-Brown. Wit opens Maui Onstage’s 2003-2004 season at the Iao Theater on Friday, Oct. 10 and runs weekends through Oct. 26. Fri., Sat. at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 5 p.m. Advance tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors over 65 and students. FILMCRITIQUE

Grindhouse Super Action

Quentin Tarantino Reinvents Cinema Once Again Quentin Tarantino’s long awaited fourth film finds the pop culture carnivore reinvigorating cinema a second time over with a single-plot-trajectory revenge movie utilizing samurai sword action with a shifting score of infectious guitar driven music to create a gloriously visual movie unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo-ping (The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) guides Tarantino’s impressive fight sequences that appoint the “Bride’s” (Uma Thurman) nonstop bloodletting battles after she awakens from a coma due to a wedding day assassination attempt by a group of executioners called the “DiVas”—Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. With references to Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers films (see Fists of Fury), Spaghetti Westerns, Anime and Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku (see Battle Royale), Tarantino has created a fresh hybrid of cinematic spectacle with the prodigious aid of cinematographer Robert Richardson (Platoon) and editor Sally Menke (Reservoir Dogs).

Kill Bill ★★★★★ Of the mixed bag of world cinema references that QT manipulates, it’s the yellow tracksuit from Bruce Lee’s last movie Game of Death that makes the most broadly sweeping statement. On the body of Uma Thurman, the iconic black striped yellow suit is a bellbottomed two-piece uniform with a padded leather top that’s more of a jacket than a shirt. In matching yellow-andblack Tiger tennis shoes “The Bride” is a living breathing martial arts machine whose prowess with a samurai sword is introduced by her decision to purchase her weapon from Hattori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba—The Streetfighter) the finest maker of swords with the strongest steel and sharpest blades. This detailed information is significant for the fetishistic way QT conveys details of character within specifically chosen boundaries of physical reality. There’s never a question about how Thurman’s Caucasian character learned to be a martial arts master because she is so clearly a highly trained ethical assassin who lives only to take revenge. The film’s opening knife fight between Thurman and Vivica Fox (as an assassin named “Copperhead”) is a signature QT sequence of kitchen bound violence wherein the presence of a child and a box of exploding cereal expand the subtext of the super action onscreen. “Super Action” is an uncommon phrase in describing movies made since 1980. But just as horror is making a comeback as a humorless genre of corporeal fear (see the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre),

Hello Nurse! Kill Bill ramps up the interaction between music and action in the same way Stanley Kubrick used classical melodies to extend out the atmosphere of his films. What’s different here is that QT will cannily change tunes mid-action to alter the tempo and rhythm of an action sequence, thereby giving the viewer a growing sense of the wild onscreen movement as it affects the characters in real time. QT’s use of Quincy Jones’ theme song for the ‘70s TV show Ironside rounds out the film as the Bride’s theme song. Blood-spurting stumps are prevalent images in Kill Bill and their introduction into the movie by way of a gory Japanese Anime cartoon sequence sets a properly cheerful tone for the torrents of blood that rain down in the latter half of the film. Kill Bill’s violence has a capitol “I” for irony and draws significantly on its meticulously appointed sets for preserving a deliciously visual splendor to the fast twitch sword play that sends heads and limbs flying a go-go. Much is being made over Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein’s decision to split Kill Bill into two installments in an attempt to recoup the money that the film went over budget. Miramax is defending the decision by saying that this precedent of releasing epic dramas in installments has been a common practice in Europe and Asia for decades. Yet Kill Bill is not an “epic drama.” Audiences returning to theaters in February of 2004 for Kill Bill-Vol. 2 will likely still want to see both films back to back for continuity sake but will presumably have to pay double for that luxury. Studios have long frowned on movies that run over two hours because of the reduced number of daily screenings theaters can have. Nonetheless, it’s apparent that Kill Bill was intended to be a single lengthy action film and not an episodic series. It’s insulting to audiences to have to pay twice to see a movie because it went double over budget in production. Miramax should give free tickets to Kill Bill-Vol.2 to audiences who pay to see Vol. 1 now instead of milking movie fans who don’t deserve such disrespectful treatment. Rated R 103 mins. MTW

And last but not least, the boys that’ll blow your mind— don’t judge a rocker by their years—Entity. The Hui often features visiting artists who share their particular experiences and creative visions with Maui. This week, they are happy to have San Francisco artist Jeff King, who works with the Zen notion of “first thought best thought.” He says: “I am engaged by the contrast between the physical nature of an object and the ephemeral nature of an image. I incorporate chance into my working process as a way to diffuse the intellect and to open myself to moments of discovery. Because of this I rarely have a preconceived notion of a finished work. While working I try to stay attuned to any incidentals in the process - such as a cutoff that warps and twists as it dries; or the bits of sawdust that fall onto the printing block creating an image reminiscent of stars. At these moments everything is potent and new and something is revealed which is larger than myself. I am most successful at these moments, as it is my interest to make art about transcendence.”

JASON MRAZ “WAITING FOR MY ROCKET TO COME” You’ll be hearing the hit single “The Remedy/I Won’t Worry” soon if you haven’t already. It’s a great song and the record is a nice mix of jazzy, mostly acoustic songs. Mraz has a cool street musician vibe and a vocal style not unlike Tracy Chapman, yet at times he grooves out and pulls a G-Love kinda thing. Either way is good with me because they both work so well. “The Boy’s Gone” is a smooth, jazzy number that oozes emotion and could easily have been a hit for Sade had she recorded it. “I’ll Do Anything” has a bouncy reggae beat with Mraz displaying impressive vocal range. The young singer/songwriter appears to have the goods to be around for a while. This record is perfect for a beach date with a chick. Mark my words—chicks will dig this guy. I mean, look at Jack Johnson—right now, he’s beatin ‘em off with a stick. I swear, if you can’t get laid with a sunset, bottle of red and this CD, then brother you need some serious help! —Elektra Records [SPIKE FUQUA]

KINGS OF LEON “YOUTH AND YOUNG MANHOOD” The Followill boys (Nathan, Jared, Caleb and Matthew) are three brothers and a cousin from Nashville who offer up some of the most infectious, swampy, goodtime rock and roll since Creedence Clearwater Revival burst out of the bayou! Old Stones or Tom Petty also come to mind when I crank this record. High praise considering the artists mentioned, but these guys write great songs and deliver them with a seasoned ‘70s groove, “California Waiting”, “Spiral Staircase”, “Genius” and the first single “Molly’s Chambers” will instantly have your foot tappin’ under those bell-bottoms—guaranteed. This collection of songs is mixed well and from start to finish is a top-notch exercise in vintage rock and roll. —RCA Records [SPIKE FUQUA]

SEETHER “DISCLAIMER” This South African band, Seether, has that "Seattle sound" down perfect—"grunge" if you will. Though my wife, a rock aficionado and Seattle native, will quickly point out "we didn’t call it grunge, it was everybody else who used that stupid label." Well, I can’t help it, this is grunge, and it’s good! I mean, one minute it’s Pearl Jam then a little Bush—hey look, it’s Gavin Vedder! But seriously, this record has some great songs and they range from the mellow to the all-out heavy riffing of "Fuck It"—damn, that song rocks! "Driven Under" and "Broken" are my favorites and if you like that "Seattle sound" you’ll be as happy as a Starbucks stockholder. Go Sonics! —Wind-Up Records [SPIKE FUQUA]

DJ CHEB I SABBAH “AS FAR AS” The continuous DJ-mixed “As Far As” is the fourth release from San Francisco based musical legend dj Cheb i Sabbah. A departure from his purely Indian based previous releases, dj Cheb i Sabbah’s first DJ-mixed CD is an audio journey to Asia, Arabia and Africa. “As Far As” features rare tracks and remixes from Sabbah himself, as well as tracks from other world music icons. His new album is also a peak at the enigmatic play list for Sabbah’s weekly performance at Nickie’s on Haight St. Ethereal sounds, both live and electronic, give many tracks a haunting, mystical quality. Often trance-like and ambient, the songs on “As Far As” transport the listener to exotic locales. Trippy, upbeat fusions are also here like “Soleil d’Egypte” by Natacha Atlas, “Lahillah Express” by Gnawa Impulse, and the album’s highlight, “Sinikan,” from Guinean star, Sekouba Bambino. —Six Degrees Records [JOE GATTO]

BOBI CÉSPEDES “REZOS” Bobi Céspedes boasts one of the world’s most powerful and distinctive voices. Rezos is her major label debut album, but she has been active in the Bay Area Latin music scene for twenty years with Conjunto Céspedes. Rezos celebrates the centuries old Afro-Cuban tradition of singing and drumming. The ten tunes update the traditional by combining it with funky guitars, jazzy piano and a bit of electronic manipulation. Céspedes was born in Cuba, but immigrated to the U.S. in 1959. She has maintained her roots through music and her calling as a Yoruba priestess. Beautiful chants, “Rezos,” “Obatala,” “Awoyo,” and “Ogun,” to the Orishas, or deities of Yoruba, show the deep spiritual connection present in AfroCuban music. “California” tells the tale of her family’s move to the West Coast and the experiences of the Cuban community there. “Yambu Rock” further funks up the traditional and “Nuevo Milenio” calls for peace and prosperity. —Six Degrees Records [JOE GATTO] MTW

DINING

you Thursday and Friday. Your popularity soars with your level of enthusiasm. Look before you leap. Make sure that other people share your enthusiasm before things get out of hand. TAURUS: The full moon unveils your hidden karma. Venus in your seventh house prompts you to be more loving. Even though you’re engaged with hard work, a more relaxed cycle begins. The moon in Taurus over the weekend helps to refresh you. GEMINI: Your ability to promote beauty for personal pleasure needs to expand into charitable causes and community service. Your creative mojo moves full speed ahead. The full moon has you out and about socializing and thinking about the future. CANCER: Making your home feel cozier will make you feel good as well. The artist within is awakened. The full moon may involve career pressures. Responsibilities can rain on your parade. By the weekend, things mellow out and you can be with friends. LEO: In the late 1950s, beat poets would sit on neighborhood lawns and write poetry. This could be your mission to revive poetry in a style appropriate for 2003. Bounce ideas off of your friends and siblings. The full moon brings luck, music and foreign affairs. VIRGO: You’re lucky in the business world. Make sensible financial decisions. Make friends and make justice as you go about your work. The full moon has you thinking about what you owe and what is owed to you. Sex, death and mystical subjects are no stranger to you. LIBRA: Good vibes follow you wherever you go. It’s a new day to make peace, to create art and to be open to love. The full moon has you celebrating relationships. Harmony will happen with ease. Let go of expectations when things don’t turn out the way you planned. SCORPIO: Confront your fears and know that “a little concern” to “full-on paranoia” is normal these days. Fortunately our imaginary monsters seldom come to life. The full moon reminds us of the need to be giving and charitable. Eat right and exercise regularly. SAGITTARIUS: Your sense of purpose and sense of belonging has been enhanced. Your social life has been off the hook. The full moon has you showing your creative colors. Love is a mystery. Enter into it prayerfully with positive intentions. CAPRICORN: Authority issues at work rear their ugly heads. Healing others in spite of your pain has been a major issue. The full moon enhances dreams, premonitions and the influence of your elders. The challenge of initiating a project requires help. AQUARIUS: Travel and higher education go hand in hand. Legal situations could turn out in your favor. Regular exercise and a simple healthy diet will help you maintain your strength. The full moon gets you involved with wild and aggressive conversations. PISCES: You’re coming off as a straight shooter as well as a powerful individual. Your imagination and intuition are enhanced. The full moon has you in the mood for good food and sensual pleasures. Beware of what you’re getting before you buy it.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

Mind Body BY SAM CAMPOS

Oyster Shooters and Fishnets Maui rules. But sometimes I yearn for the nightlife that big cities provide—live music, clubs and people. But if you get creative and keep an open mind, this island has many happy little surprises. On Wednesday, BJ and I perused Lower Main Street for dive treasures. When we walked into the first watering hole, BJ and I were caught yawning—hellooo, we just came from a languid, albeit intelligent, movie. “Cut that out!” says this guy at the bar. “Or would you like a blankie and a pillow?” The patrons roared with laughter. Thus, we were initiated into Idini’s. There were about five men bellied-up and drinking, with Lou Reed’s “Take A Walk On The Wild Side” playing on the jukebox. The bartender—a pretty, young pregnant woman— offered us a beverage immediately. We stared in awe at the specials board, which featured “Any shot of Schnapps for $2” and “FRESH Oyster Shooters with cocktail sauce for a buck!” Debating between the “Cooks Split of Champagne for $4” or the “BIG 24 oz. Coors Lt. For $3.50,” BJ and I settled on a couple of draft beers to get our bearings. The bar and two pool tables quickly filled up. The music resumed with a strange—but epitomic—mix of Foreigner and Metallica, Eminem and Bruce Springsteen. Later, TBB and AC joined us, and we all hightailed it to the next discovery. Looking like a reformed bowling alley on the outside, Tiffany’s was huge, with a long bar, lots of tables and booths, a dance floor and just a few scattered people throughout. Someone was performing a karaoke version of that damn Titanic song, Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” So I switched up my docile beer drinking to a stiffer Jack & Coke. While AC and I looked through the gargantuan songbook, TBB and BJ belted out a fine rendition of Grease’s “Summer Nights”—kind of like they’d maybe done it before or something. Last Sunday, Arica, Kirsten and I attended a Hip-Hop extravaganza at the Haiku Community Center. At first it felt like we were at a high school dance, as everyone sort of milled about in small clusters outside. One guy told us that they were all waiting for “Living Legends” to show up. “Who’s ‘Living Legends’?” we asked. “You don’t know who ‘Living Legends’ are?!” he scoffed and walked away shaking his head. We proceeded to buy a dubious ticket for $20 anyway, not recognizing that the happenings inside were just as audible outside. Suckers, maybe. But we’re suckers for a good cause. We drank Sam Adams Nut Brown Ale out of brown paper bags in the parking lot while waiting for the show to resume. The three of us girls discussed the dichotomy of Fishnets and how we should plan a Lingerie Party. We also talked about how fun it is to wear boys’ underwear. “Yeah, especially when you stuff things in ‘em,” Arica said. Hunh? Kirsten and I just looked at each other and cracked up. Our little cross-dressing Arica… On the flip side, last weekend I attended quite a sophisticated soirée in Lahaina with my friend Bébé. It was a celebration for her friend Pierre’s birthday and there were about 50 French people there. They were all lovely and fun and very French. I pretended to understand what they were saying with what little French I remember from high school. “Ça va?” they would ask me. “Oui, ça va, et toi?” I replied. Then I just smiled and stuffed another piece of cake in my mouth. Silly American girl. Mostly I concentrated on the sounds of laughter and cheekkissing, champagne popping, and Manu Chao playing in the background. There was a long banquet table outside with a seemingly endless supply of perfectly cooked steak and chicken, with fresh tomato-basil-mozzarella, baguettes, Brie and so much wine. There was dancing in the living room and some drunk New Zealand guy. I joined in the birthday song for Pierre, witnessed his glee with the belly dancer, bid adieu to my friend Bébé, and left. MTW
