DOESN’T LIKE HOT CHICKS Your response to the letters asking for a return of the Advice Goddess was about as funny as the column that replaced it—not very! (Letters, Oct. 9). Holoholo Girl is not “pretty much the same” as the Advice Goddess. If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn’t understand. -Warren “Wildman” Woodward, Kihei
BIG SCOOP ON BIG CAT Some friends and I were hiking in the woods above Olinda last week and believe that we have spotted the elusive big cat of upcountry (“Coconut Wireless,” Oct. 9). We were able to salvage one picture of the big cat and were hoping you could give this story the press it deserves. Since nobody has actually recorded a picture of the big cat, we think that we have stumbled upon something truly brilliant and deserving as much press as the Kihei and upcountry papers give to this incredible, gripping story... What they have failed to report and
what we now have remarkable evidence of is that the big cat seems to have found a friend as elusive as the cat itself. I am so happy I live on an island that has so many interesting, newsworthy subjects to cover the front pages of our many informative newspapers. -J. Twang, via email

Yo, Mr. Dreads with the attitude. Are you and your friend HIPPIES or just pretending to be? I thought hippies were peace-loving peacemaking, aloha spreading NICE people. You guys are jerks. You strut around Paia with your snotty attitude thinking you are superior and you cruise through town in your big gas-hogging, air-polluting SUV. You frequent the local shops and restaurants with your buddies and treat the employees like shit. You talk to them like they are idiots who have nothing better to do than kiss your stupid ignorant ass. You have such an arrogant air about you, you talk too much about yourself and other useless shit and you think you are the authority on everything. Well, here’s something you don’t know: everyone who works in the places you frequent hates the sight of you. You are rude and confrontational. Why don’t you get the hint that you are not welcome in these places and that maybe the negative energy you carry and project on others will soon be reflected back on you… if it hasn’t already happened.

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, OCT. 13 It’s Columbus Day! Woohoo! Some people call it Discoverer’s Day, but they’re stupid! It’s the day us haoles pat ourselves on the back for all the times we pounded generally peaceful locals into the ground and then stole their land, gold, chicks, etc. It’s also the day they close all the banks, which actually kinda screws me over because I forgot to cash my paycheck last Friday… Stupid Columbus… Speaking of cashing in, Ken Nagamine won free LASIK eye surgery for coming closest in guessing the winning time of the Hawaii Modular Space Molokai Hoe canoe race. He missed the winning time by just one second, which is pretty good for a blind guy.
TUESDAY, OCT. 14 A bunch of smart doctor-types say America is fast-becoming a nation of fat slobs. Four million Americans are “severely obese”—at least 100 pounds overweight. If current trends continue, just five percent of the population will be at normal weight in 2040, with 80 percent of Americans at least 30 pounds overweight. Of course, here on Maui we don’t have to worry about that, what with our $6 plate lunches with two scoops rice, one scoop macaroni salad and huge helpings of breaded Mahi-Mahi and chicken katsu and gallons of gravy poured over hamburger patties with eggs and kalua pig and spareribs and chili with rice and spam-this and spam-that and Portuguese sausage and eggs and rice for breakfast when you’re not having pineapplecoconut French Toast—mmmm… pineap-

How long have they been ripping off Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer? Two centuries now? But they won’t be gouging us anymore with their… oh wait. Case is actually denouncing the “U.S. Treasury,” which seems to be a telephone scam that tricks people into paying a $1,675 “customs fee” to the Netherlands to get $1.2 million in “lottery winnings.” Yeah, I guess that’s bad… too… but you have to pretty stupid to fall for such an obvious rip-off.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15 Today Governor Linda Lingle held her annual Oahu Country Club seminar for developers who want to get politicians to bend to their will. As usual, she first criticized businessmen and women who waste their time and money “trying to convince people in the Legislature to change their minds.” Then she offered her patented action plan on how to make the wheels of government turn for you. “What is much more effective in the long term is to put people in office who already agree with you,” she said. “It’s much more direct… once they’re in, you don’t have to go back down there anymore to the Legislature, because you have elected someone who agrees with you.” No word yet on when Governor Lingle might hold a similar class for normal working people.

among 100 national winners of excellence awards from the Milken Family Foundation. The story goes into good detail on the teachers and their backgrounds and how their teeth sparkle with selfless nobility, but missing from the piece is any mention of the fact that the awards are pretty much meaningless. That’s because the “Milken” in “Milken Family Foundation” is disgraced “Junk Bond King” and convicted felon Michael Milken. Indicted for securities fraud and insider trading in 1989, Milken eventually pled guilty to six lesser charges, paid a record $1.1 billion in fines and spent nearly two years in federal prison. Milken became a cari-
cature of the 1980s, a name synonymous with greed and shallow cynicism. Hilariously, Milken’s official biography at the Foundation website refers to his past life of crime as “revolutionizing the modern capital marketplace.” It’s understandable why Milken would pretend such naked excess never took place, but what’s the excuse for the Maui News?
FRIDAY, OCT. 17 Official People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spokeshottie Pamela Anderson rips into Colonel Sanders, who operates four out of his billion Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants on Maui. “If people knew how KFC treats chickens, they’d never eat another drumstick,” wrote the former Playboy Playmate to priszm brandz, the Colonel’s corporate parent. For some reason, Anderson and PETA don’t go for such standard chicken processing practices as throat cutting, beak slicing, growth hormones and cramped living conditions. “What KFC does to 750 million chickens each year is not civilized or acceptable, and you can help change that,” added the woman who was once briefly engaged to Scott Baio and has professed a lifelong fear of mirrors. “Cruelty is cruelty, and KFC is being cruel in the extreme.”
SATURDAY, OCT. 18 Not now, the World Series is on.
SUNDAY, OCT. 19 Woohoo! I won the lottery! Just got an email today from “the desk of the promotions manager, international” of the “Softwears Promo Lottery International, The Netherlands!” Says I’ve been approved for a “lump sum pay out of US$850.000.00 in cash” and that my “fund” is now “deposited with a Bank in Bahamas” and that now I can participate in the “end of year high stakes US$1.3 billion International Lottery.” I can’t lose! ‘Minimal Government Oversight’ Kent Smith is the only one who can afford his Pu’unoa project For a shameless developer, Kent Smith is a pretty clever guy. Two years ago he attacked one of his critics just outside the Maui County Council chambers. Smith pled no contest to assault charges and received probation and community service. Now he’s back in the news, trying to ram a residential development down West Maui throats. But this time, instead of trying brute force, he’s being sly and indirect. Smith did three things to make approval of his 254-home “Pu’unoa Community” project in West Maui a near-slam dunk. First, he covered it under layers of other corporate names like Kauaula Associates, effectively masking his involvement. Next he got the state officials to steal jurisdiction over the project away from the less sympathetic county government. Third, and most diabolical, he promoted the project as a way of bringing much-needed “affordable housing” to West Maui’s working people, despite the fact that the vast majority of homes will be far too expensive for those living at or below Maui’s $60,000 a year median income. On Oct. 17, in Lihue on the island of Kauai, Smith won big. That’s when the state Housing and Community Development Corporation (HCDCH) approved Smith’s request to “fast track” his application to build south of Lahaina on land just across Honoapiilani Road from Puamana Beach Park. Astonishingly, the HCDCH approval means the project is now exempt from all “statues, ordinances, charter provisions and rules of any governmental agency relating to planning, zoning, construction standards, development of land and construction.” State officials call this “minimal governmental oversight.” By voting to approve the project, the nine-member HCDCH Board completely ignored Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, planning department director Michael Foley, Councilwoman Joanne Johnson and numerous local residents, all of whom urged rejection or, at the very least, a delay to allow more study. “Their vote seems very insulting to the county,” said Maui County Councilwoman Joanne Johnson a few hours after the vote. “It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The state is dictating what the county should do.” The Maui County Council now has 45 days to vote on the project. They have no authority to modify the proposal. The project will also go forward if the council does nothing. Smith managed to get his project rammed through the HCDCH by pretending he was building “high-quality afford-

Where the ”working people” will live able homes” for the “working people of West Maui.” In fact, Smith called his proposed development “the only new affordable project in West Maui in the foreseeable future.” “Many people who live in West Maui have never had an opportunity like this to own their own home,” was how the Kauaula Associates Pu’unoa project summary put it. “You always hear complaints that the developers are only building for the rich. ‘What about the local people?’ we ask. Pu’unoa is for the local people.” Kauaula Associates used current market conditions to justify the need for an end-run around the Maui County Council to the HCDCH. “The ‘fast track’ application process is important, too, because interest rates are so low right now that we have to take advantage of the opportunity,” wrote the company in its Pu’unoa project summary. “If this project takes years and years to approve, it may never be built… For many Maui residents, it may be the only chance to own a home in West Maui.” Maui County Planning Director Michael Foley says otherwise. In two letters to the HCDCH this year, Foley blasted Smith’s project from a variety of directions. In the June 9 letter, Foley called the project “premature and inappropriate.” In a Sept. 15 letter, He pointed out that of the 254 homes, “only 22 percent [56 homes] would be affordable for families below the median income.” What’s more, Foley noted it was very likely all the project’s home prices would climb to market levels within just four years of build-out. Foley further questioned whether the project would interfere with the proposed Lahaina Bypass road and wondered where the inevitable traffic increase would go. Making matters

worse, Foley pointed out that the project had no provision for the estimated 116 children who would live in the proposed community and attend already overcrowded local schools. “While we are usually supportive of the provision of new, affordable housing, the development proposed by Kent Smith mauka of Puamana and south of Lahaina is strongly opposed by the County of Maui,” wrote Mayor Alan Arakawa in a July 21 letter to the HCDCH echoing Foley’s concerns. “[P]erhaps it would be more appropriate for your department to suggest that Mr. Smith terminate his proposal.” Local residents from the Puamana Community Association, which sits next to the proposed Pu’unoa homes, were similarly outraged, especially at the nearly silent way Smith was able to bypass normal county channels. “Our community is uncomfortable with the fact that no input from the Association concerning the project has been sought,” wrote Puamana Community Association General Manager Richard A. Meaney in an Oct. 8 letter to the HCDCH. Meaney then asked the Board to reject Smith’s plan and urge him to “meet with members of the West Maui Community as well as applicable Maui County agencies to fully inform all impacted individuals what is intended.” Instead of listening to the residents and officials who will have to live with the project, the HCDCH Board voted to give Smith expedited approval with virtually no concessions. As for what Maui County will do, Councilwoman Johnson said the council’s Housing and Human Services Committee—of which she is a member—will take up Pu’unoa first. But she added that she had “no idea” for how a final vote of the full council might go. MTW

Our Next “President”
Talking with Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich is the first presidential candidate to visit Maui in a long time. The progressive Democrat arrived late Saturday afternoon, hung out with Willie Nelson at the big Maui Montessori School fundraiser, thrilled a packed crowd at Maui Community College and then passed the hat at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu. But before he flew back to D.C. Kucinich gave Maui Time an exclusive one-on-one interview. MTW: I read that you would like to decrease military spending. Would that make the country less safe? Kucinich: It would make the country safer. In what way? Look at the money we’re spending right now on the military. We spend $400 billion a year on the Pentagon. Is America safer? No. Did the bombing of Iraq make us safe? No. It made us less safe. It is the way we spend the money and the intention and policy of this nation that determines whether or not America will be safe. My policies for the security of the American people involve cooperating with the world community on matters of international security, which will enhance our domestic security. We cannot set ourselves apart from the world community. Doing that makes it that much more difficult for Americans to be safe. It is only through international cooperation that America can truly be safe. So I will set a path towards that. As a matter of fact, you have to keep in mind that America spends more than all the other countries of the world put together for the military. What are we afraid of? Why aren’t we addressing our basic concerns that also provide fear in this country? The fear of not having
decent health care, the fear of not having good education, the fear of not having a job. I mean, these are all real fears that relate to peoples’ everyday lives. So what will you do? So as president, I will move to cut Pentagon spending by 15 percent, put that money into creating a universal child care program. I will move to eliminate waste in the Pentagon so that the taxpayers‚ dollars are given full credit
of dollars on the development of high tech weapons. Our basic defense will be as strong as ever, if not stronger, under my administration. But I am going to stop the waste of building newer and newer generations of high tech weaponry. That’s going to stop. And I’m not going to ask the American people to keep funding weapon systems that are predicated on World War III. If you get elected, how will you deal with a
AS THE NOMINEE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, I WILL ASK THE PEOPLE TO PROVIDE A CONGRESS WHICH WILL PASS UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, A CONGRESS WHICH WILL MAKE SURE THAT NO AMERICAN WILL EVER AGAIN HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BEING SICK. for their importance without waste. There are $1 trillion in accounts in the Pentagon which have not been reconciled. I’ll eliminate waste in the Pentagon, put the money into education. We’ll protect this country but we’re not going to tell the people of America that they’re going to be protected, while at the same time there is tremendous waste in the military. Waste in the military is a threat to our nation, it’s not a protection. In Hawaii the military is a big driver in the economy. Tourism, then the military after that. If one cuts significantly into the military, presumably that will effect Hawaii. How would the people who work in the military or are connected to the military react? The reductions that I’m speaking about are in the high tech weaponry, which are capital intensive, not labor intensive. The United States Army has been left to deteriorate while this administration has spent tens of billions
hostile Congress? It’s not going to happen. What’s going to happen is that when I get the nomination, I will carry in a Congress that will cooperate, the same way that Franklin Delano Roosevelt did in 1932. You appeal to the American people for help in passing legislation for economic reform and ask them to provide a Congress which would enable a new agenda to be brought forward. I will present the same appeal to the American people. As the nominee of the Democratic party, I will ask the people to provide a Congress which will pass universal health care, a Congress which will make sure that no American will ever again have to worry about being sick. We need to get the profit out of health care and my proposal for single payer, universal health care—Medicare for all, expanded Medicare—will enable all Americans to be covered. We can get Congress

to approve that if the American people determine that they want Congress to do that. Given that most incumbents are reelected, it might not happen that you bring in a new Congress. What would happen if you had to deal with the one you have? I’ll take issue with that because we haven’t had an American president or a nominee of a party fully ready to present a program for broad reform and go to the American people and say “Give me a Congress to make this happen. You want this kind of reform, create a Congress to make it happen.” And I am confident that under those circumstances, the American people will respond. So I’m not ready to concede for a minute that I wouldn’t have a Congress that would reflect the power of the American people to change the entire agenda. Indeed, my nomination as president would signal that the American people are ready for fundamental change. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US In September in Pinson, Ala., Joseph Logan, 46, was arrested for assault just after watching Alabama’s 34-31 football loss to Arkansas on TV, which Logan took pretty hard. He started ranting, slamming doors, and throwing dishes into the sink, and it was at this point that his son, Seth, 20, chose to ask Dad innocently if he would help him buy a car, at which point Dad grabbed a gun, put Seth in a headlock, and fired a bullet near Seth’s ear. Said a sheriff’s deputy, “I know we take football serious in the South, but that’s crossing the line.”
U.S. CUSTOMS IS ON THE JOB! In August, U.S. Customs confiscated an SUV being used to smuggle Mexican immigrants into the country, but later admitted that their thorough search of it had overlooked a 13-year-old girl hiding inside; she was discovered 42 hours later. And in July, Adrian Rodriguez was imprisoned (but released by an appeals court a month later) because Mexican authorities found 33 pounds of marijuana that U.S. Customs had failed to find in a vehicle it had just sold to him at auction. That was the third time recently that someone had bought a vehicle from U.S. Customs that contained overlooked marijuana and for which the purchaser spent at least some time in prison (in one case, one year) before things were straightened out.

This was not a lawsuit by the victim’s family against the hospital; this was a direct payout to Presland, whose injury was that he was made to suffer temporary prison conditions after his arrest (he was acquitted because of his psychosis), whereas if he had never been released, he would have experienced only psychiatric-hospital conditions.
UPDATE News of the Weird reported in December that Inga Kosak had won the first World Extreme Ironing Championship in Munich in September, based on running a course through several stations (e.g., up in trees, in the middle of streams) and ironing a designated garment. An October Wall Street Journal story shows the “sport” as growing in prominence. South African Anton Van De Venter, 27, broke the high-altitude record in August by ironing his national flag at the 20,000-foot summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, while nude, in freezing temperatures (quote: “I came, I saw, I pressed a crease”), and British diver Ian Mitchell sawed through ice in Wisconsin in March and submitted photos of himself in a wet suit “ironing” (with a Black & Decker Quick ‘n’ Easy) a shirt that was braced against the underside of the ice.
GIVE THEM POINTS FOR “STYLE” A 17-year-old boy, after receiving a free Krispy Kreme doughnut at an Erie, Pa., store promotion, stepped back in line for another but was refused. According to the Erie TimesNews, he returned a few minutes later with a McDonald’s sack over his head and asked for a doughnut but was again refused. Then he fell to the floor and flailed his arms and legs, demanding another free doughnut, and was cited by police for disorderly conduct.

“Peter Martin again scores!” yelled the announcer from the clubhouse. “I wonder what he had for breakfast. He musta had alfalfa sprouts—borrowed from the horse.” Later, when another player, Bob Nooney of the Island Biker shop failed to score, the announcer described the shot as missing the goal “by one Volkswagen… A Volkswagen is a small car.” Nooney missed the next shot as well, this time “by a Toyota.” But Nooney, who’s been around hunter/jumper horses since childhood and has played for the Maui Polo Club for the last eight years, finally scored in the second period. “The score is about two-two,” said the announcer. “Two for the white, two for the black and two for the middle.” Polo may be “the world’s oldest extreme sport,” as Nooney likes to call it, but it’s also expensive. You basically can’t play unless you’ve got four ponies, one for each sevenminute chukker or period. Even one chukker is tough on the ponies. They start off standing, the run, stop, turn around, run some more, get up to a full gallop, turn on a dime, stop, move back and forth amidst a dusty bunch of other ponies and yelling riders swinging mallets, then run again, then stop… all for seven straight minutes. And the ponies had to do all that with one rider dubbed by the announcer as “The Super Portugee Bullet.” During each break the announcer played canned oldies and Hawaiian tunes. Those not tailgating hung out in the clubhouse, which is just a small open green and white building where the announcer sits. Inside are white plastic chairs and benches for spectators. T-shirts are also sold. Most spec-
As a rule, people don’t generally think of polo, with its galloping ponies and mallets and prim and proper riders wearing those little polo helmets when they think of Maui. But polo is an old island tradition dating back to the late 19th Century. It’s still played every Sunday at the dusty Kaonoulu Ranch in Olinda. That’s when the Maui Polo Club gathers for a few matches on what would be a really hot field were it not for the trade winds that blow in off the ocean. “A nice sunny suntan polo game,” was how the announcer put it one recent Sunday, right before playing recorded versions of both the national and Hawaiian anthems to begin the competition. As the players sat up straight on their ponies midfield and spectators on the sidelines and in the clubhouse stood reverently, a few more cars rolled up to the gate to pay a $5 per adult entry fee before they could enjoy an afternoon of tailgating and polo. Usually, 10 to 20 cars line up on the far side of the field near the scoreboard, but there were only a few on Sunday. Polo is basically field hockey, but the four players on each team are on horseback and there are no goalies. Everyone rides around, swinging a mallet to hit a small white ball between the goal posts at opposing ends of the field. Players often shout at their teammates during play: “Come on guys, get in there!” said one particularly spirited female rider. In the first match, the same guy scored the first two goals.

Between periods the ponies trotted in sweating and panting, with the riders in much the same state. First a stable attendant would remove the saddle and blanket. Then the attendant would carefully unwrap the colored tape from the pony’s fetlocks. While this went on, the pony might graze on grass. Then an attendant with a garden hose would come over and spray down the pony. As for the rider, all he or she could do was go into the corral and fetch a new, already saddled pony. The match was tied at three-three going into the third chukker. The announcer used

the phrase “Bob Nooney is in control” a lot, but his Island Biker team fell behind in the fourth chukker. The score went to four-three, then almost instantly five-three. “We’re off to the races,” yelled the announcer, but then the bell rings ending the period and the match. “We’ll be back in one Hawaiian minute for the main event,” said the announcer. “The world’s greatest polo players, born and raised on the island of Maui.” To help pass the time, he then played the song “Tequila.” The Maui Polo Club will hold its big Polo in the Country Benefit game on Sunday, Oct. 26. The sun is shining brightly over sparkling Lahaina Harbor, but Tricia Norton of Connecticut is inside a small air-conditioned studio in the old Planet Hollywood building on Front Street, looking at posters. Specifically, at a small notebook paper-sized yellow reprint showing a bunch of umbrellas. “I have the original at home,” she said, adding that she paid $950 for it. “We have this massive wall in the house that is 40 feet high. This kind of artwork is perfect. I really like the big bold colors. The bright yellow is what first appealed to me.” Norton may be here on her honeymoon, but it’s the poster that has all attention at the moment. She asks one of the gallery attendants if she could see another poster by the same company—much like the one she’s holding, except with silk stockings. Gallery owner Alan Dickar, 37, says certainly, hunts through some poster rolls, then spreads it out on a table already stacked with other posters. It is a massive sheet, so large it is actually three sheets grafted together. The poster shows three women, all wearing stockings. Like the umbrella poster hanging on Norton’s massive Connecticut wall, this poster is an advertisement. It is also at least a hundred years old. All the art on Dickar’s wall is as old. Known as Vintage Posters, the artwork is becoming increasingly popular around the world. In fact,
it’s apparently the only art that has seen increasing sales since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks all but gutted American demand for fancy schmancy art. Dickar doesn’t look like he owns one of the largest vintage poster collections in the world— he looks more like a real estate agent or mortgage broker, but you never know about these things. The 3,000 pieces he owns right now are spread between his two Vintage European Galleries in Lahaina—one on Front St. in the old Planet Hollywood building and the other in Whaler’s Village. His are among the only independently owned galleries in Lahaina. The posters, which are very colorful and old and often quite large, are held up on metal walls with small magnets. They are all authentic. In fact, two percent of Dickar’s works bear the tell-tale tax stamp that shows the poster was actually hung on a European wall, then later stolen for someone’s private collection. “They make great investments, but you get to smile at them,” said Dickar. “I happen to find the ones that actually hung on the wall charming.” The posters are actually stone lithographs. It was Jules Cheret who perfected the process, which is why art types today consider him the father of poster art. Basically, the lithographer engraves each color on a piece of limestone. These were replaced with zinc plates in the
1920s, but the stone lithographs seem more colorful. That is perhaps owed to the use of metal-based inks, which we don’t have today. While posters usually have some sort of restoration, the colors typically stay vibrant because of these inks. The posters range in size from slightly smaller than a sheet of notebook paper to nearly 10 feet high. The largest in Dickar’s collection is a seven foot by nine foot “coming attractions” poster for the magician “Carter the Great.”
by–Anthony Pignataro Framing them requires special UV plexiglass, to prevent condensation from building up inside the frame. They typically sell for a few thousand dollars. Small ones will go for a couple hundred bucks, others much more. The most expensive poster ever was a one-of-a-kind Frankenstein movie poster that sold at auction for $495,000. Compare that to the most expensive by Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, which was an 1891 poster for the Moulin Rouge that sold for a paltry $300,000. The posters date back to the 1880s. They are the first example of popular art. Plastered on walls throughout the streets of Europe, they advertised everything from circuses to silk stock-
ings, including products, people, places to travel, operas, events and war propaganda. Some posters warned people about the necessity of buying war bonds; others told when some mesmerist was coming into town. They were the billboards of the time—the only real commercial advertising in society—but they were made of cheap newsprint and plastered to the walls with wallpaper paste. They were hung in the early morning, but only meant to stay on the wall a week at most. Then hangers came by again and either tore them down or covered them over with another poster. One of Dickar’s assistants showed me an old photo of a French city at the dawn of the 20th Century. The storefronts have dozens of these posters plastered on their walls, rows of three high, advertising metal polish, trips to Brussels, alcohol and cooking. People would actually stroll through town, just to look at the posters and see what was going on. The kicker was that the posters were all done by the major artists of the time: Cheret, Alphonse Mucha, even Toulouse-Lautrec. Gossiped about and followed like modern rock stars, these artists were the most famous men in Europe. The growing European middle class loved these guys and wanted their original art, but couldn’t afford it. So they went for the next best thing—the posters.

COVER STORY
By the 1890s, poster mania hit Paris. Soon it swept across the continent. At first people began bribing the hangers to save particular posters when it was time to take them down. But then townsfolk just began stealing the posters right off the way, usually early in the day when the morning dew took away some of the paper paste’s stickiness. Many times people would just follow the hangers on their morning runs, then steal the posters before the paste had even dried. Predictably, printers began hiring guards, who followed the poster hangers as they went about their hanging. Poster lovers were undeterred, and just took to stealing at night. Theft became so common that printers began printing posters specifically to sell them to collectors. These overruns make up the bulk of Dickar’s collection. Cheret even printed mini posters—a kind of poster-of-the-month club—for collectors. Overnight, pop art was born. “I started in New York and I did really well,” said Dickar. “Then I moved to California to get away from the winter and I never went back. I moved out here as an experiment, and liked it even more. I get to choose my spot. The posters work about everywhere. Dickar got into the business by helping out a friend. Eight years ago, he was working as an economist in New York. A friend, who had gotten into the business by grudgingly trading a computer to a guy who recently inherited a 450 year-old castle for some posters, asked Dickar if he’d like to help flip posters at an antique show. “I had no idea what it was about, but I tried it,” he said. “I fell in love with posters.” Today Dickar is a member of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association (IVPDA). A Lahaina resident, he says he visits Europe two or three times a year to look for new posters. Just two to three percent of the posters in Dickar’s collection bear the tax stamp that signifies a poster was actually hung on a street sometime in the last century or two. But the overruns made specifically for collectors are far more prized, because they’re more likely to be in excellent to mint condition. Posters were a good way for artists like Toulouse Lautrec to get their work out. Toulouse Lautrec was the first male in his family not to go into the military, but instead became an artist. He loved posters because they were democratic. They were art that everyone could obtain— even if “obtain” ended up meaning “steal.” In fact, most of the artists at the time wanted to get into posters. Posters meant a paycheck while they were still alive. It’s hard to think of simple advertisements for umbrellas and circuses to be art, but the posters are undeniably beautiful. Leonetto Capiello’s “Maurin Quina”—displaying the green devil that made him famous—is on one level simply an ad for booze containing Quinine, which back in the late 19th Century was a usual additive to alcohol. But the poster is also a fine example of Art Deco—a style he originated. Capiello would take an image—in this case the green, grinning devil— and put it on a stark background. The devil has nothing to do with Quinine-laced aperitifs, but it doesn’t have to. All that’s important in modern advertising is that the image remains in the viewer’s subconscious mind. Similarly, the Czech poster painter Mucha

helped found art nouveau. He’s known for beautiful, extremely detailed images based on German and Japanese influences with two usual additions: botanical imagery and feminine beauty. His posters always seem to have a woman’s flowing hair and curves and a bunch of plants and flowers along the margins. Interestingly, not all Dickar’s posters date back to pre-World War I Europe. He has one of Andy Warhol’s “Chanel #5” posters, which ended being one of famed artist’s last designs. “It came out 10 years after his death for respect,” one gallery aide told me. It is unquestionably a Warhol, showing nothing other than a bottle of Chanel #5 perfume. It retails for $450. Dickar says he finds some pieces at estate sales and swap meets, but not so much. Rarely has he found something at an auction. Instead, he tends to find rare posters in more out of the way places, like walls, old chests and holes in the ground. Once, he obtained a bunch of posters from a guy who fell into a hole beneath a Belgian barn, only to find stacks of posters buried decades earlier. “The farmer had lots of rolls stuck in his rafters during the 1930s,” said Dickar. “But then the guy needed space, so he buried maybe 200 to 300 posters in a hole underneath his barn. In 1997 a worker demolishing the barn fell into the hole and found them. Over a hundred of them were in very good condition.” Dickar’s greatest find ever was in Paris. Headed back to his hotel with an armload of posters, it started to rain. Dickar ducked into the first doorway he found, which was a high-end antique bookstore. Realizing it was going to pour for a while, he started glancing at some art books. Soon he was talking to the manager, telling him he was interested in posters. “He said there were some down the street, this way, that way, etc.,” said Dickar. “Of course, he had some too, but they were very old and not worth my time.” Surprised, Dickar asked the manager to see some of them. “Oh, you wouldn’t be interested,” Dickar remembers the manager telling him. “Please humor me,” Dickar says he told him. The manager shook his head. Dickar didn’t give up. “It’s not going to stop raining anytime soon,” he said. “I collect posters for a living. I might as well take a look.” Shaking his head, the manager got up and went to an old chest covered in dust and books. He opened it, revealing what Dickar remembers as “rolls and rolls of opera posters”— perhaps 150 of them. “The bookstore had obtained them with some original opera scores years before,” said Dickar. “They knew they were collector’s items, so they kept them.” Dickar says he immediately bought all he could. A year later Dickar returned to the shop and purchased more. He was back in the same shop a year after that and bought the last of the posters. Dickar eventually sold all 150. “We have people come in here and wander around for two hours, then it’s like a light bulb goes off above them and they get it,” said Dickar. “‘This was hung!’ they say. Pretty soon they’re hooked on every aspect. The posters are addicting. Remember, the work that went into these posters is mind-boggling.” MTW

A Day at the Mall

Dining at Yummy Korean BBQ Can’t say I’ve spent much time at the mall. I mean, actually purchasing stuff is fun, and the people watching can be great, but I’m not much of a shopper. So needing nourishment upon exiting a movie recently, we made a quick stop at the food court for something new to me: Yummy Korean BBQ. It was new for my buddy Ryan, too, whose wife spoils him with a vegetarian meal almost daily. She doesn’t exactly insist that he stay away from meat, but she does reward him for his good eating intentions. Shirlay, the cutie behind the counter, could see the confusion in our eyes as we stared at the menu, and offered her suggestions. Between her translation and the pictures on the wall—thank God for the pictures!—we were able to find something to satisfy our needs. If you break it down, the menu isn’t really that overwhelming. There are soups, combo plates, side orders and specials. If you’re not so hungry but still desire a meal, you can opt for a mini plate,
which is simply an entrée, two veggies and rice. The typical combo plate consists of an entrée or two, four (yes, four!) sides, and rice. It takes a lot of food to fulfill a 6’7” Dutchman, so Ryan’s decision was easy: the Yummy Special. That’s Chicken, kal bi ribs and beef accompanied by four side dishes and two fried man doo (dumplings), all served with rice. Yeah, that’s a lot—whole lumberjack camps don’t eat that much—but Ryan made short work of it. Admitting the kim chi was burning a hole in the roof of his mouth he managed to mutter an “ooohhggg” between inhaling bites, which loosely translates as “this is good.” Then again, I was sure that satisfaction would soon become guilt when he went home to explain his meal to his wife. I know they always tell you that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I made my decision on what to eat on the name only. I opted for the Man Doo Kook Soo—cool name, huh?—which is essentially a Korean saimin noodle soup with steamed dumplings ($5.50). Practically a meal, the soup was better than the picture suggests.

I later learned from Manager/Owner Mike Yun that Koreans like their hard alcohol, and they typically use soup to calm the stomach after a rough night. The Yook Gae Jung (semispicy soup), the Tofu Soup and the Seaweed Soup are three other menu items designed with that purpose in mind. Wanting more, I had to try the Bi Bim Bap ($5.75), a traditional Korean meal of beef and eggs served over cucumber, cabbage, and daikon. I found this a unique combination—a lot like a Loco Moco but with an Asian flair. It’s flavorful, but not too spicy. Yun explained that this is one of the meals offered on Korean Air flights. Side dishes are offered by themselves or with a combo plate. These include corn, seaweed, kim chi, been sprouts, pancakes, shoyu sweet potatoes, cabbage, zucchini or a garlic potato salad. You can create your own combo plates with these sides and your choice of kal bi ribs, BBQ chicken or BBQ beef, or you can select from one of their numbered meals, all under $7. There are even three different curry rice dishes to choose from. Yummy Korean BBQ has 45 locations in all of Hawaii and has been in the mall here on Maui for almost eight years. “Locals really like the chicken and beef meals because of how much we give you,” said Yun. “All of our food is provided fast, consistent, and authentic.” Yummy Korean BBQ is located at the foodcourt of Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays until 6 p.m. MTW

The Ultimate Party Band The Rebirth Brass Band visits the Mardi Gras of the Pacific Halloween is nearly here. Soon masks, music and moonlight will light up Lahaina’s streets. Every year the town’s energy level revs up so high it rivals New Orleans’ wild street parties, earning it the nickname “Mardi Gras of the Pacific.” That’s why it’s fitting that New Orleans’ own Rebirth Brass Band is coming to Maui. This is the ultimate party band arriving just in time to jump-start this year’s Halloween festivities. Performing on Maui for the first time, this nine-member band has two drummers—snare and bass—and seven brass members including trumpets, trombone, saxophone and the tuba. The band formed in 1983, when brothers Phillip and Keith Frazier were still in high school. Now, on the Rebirth Brass Band’s 20th anniver-

sary, they’re bringing this unique and infectious music to the rest of the world. The brass band tradition cropped up in the years following the Civil War. Men dressed in their Sunday best would march alongside funeral processions while playing upbeat rhythms that provided a stark contrast to the understandably sad occasions. Their popularity and interest grew when they began associating with Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, which at the time brought music and entertainment to the working class. These street parades and public spectacles eventually became known as Secondline, which are still part of life in New Orleans. With few exceptions, Rebirth is the centerpiece of secondline parades each Sunday through Social Aid and Pleasure Club season, which runs from the end of summer to the beginning of spring. Audience involvement is one way spontaneous chants and riffs from the latest rap song find their way into Rebirth’s music. This ability to modernize a somewhat obscure and almost obsolete musical tradition is how they gained their reputation as New Orleans’ premiere brass band. After decades of evolution their music mixes tradition with R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap. Though the traditional brass band music has changed in fairly radical ways, the ultimate goal remains the same: Make people feel good regardless of what’s going on in their lives. Rebirth owes its success to their chameleon-like talent for playing a wide array of venues. Outside New Orleans city blocks, Rebirth is a popular favorite amongst Tulane and Loyola students, but the festival-goers are what makeup the true powerhouse behind

Good brass Rebirth’s amazing popularity. They have performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival, Bonnaroo and Rockslide, to say nothing of virtually every other major music festival in both U.S and Europe. Often accompanying other bands, Rebirth has shared the stage with the Meters, Grateful Dead and George Clinton and the P-Funk All-stars. Expect a lot of spontaneous, improvisational, fun and funky music. They can all but guarantee that every show they perform will have its own unique flare. There is so much individual talent in the band, it gushes from their performance—smooth saxophone solos, tight horn arrangements and a pumping tuba bass line.

Jury Trial Grisham Novel Wins An Onscreen Verdict The circus sham of the American judicial system is roasted over hot coals in this intriguing film treatment of John Grisham’s 1996 novel about a landmark civil lawsuit against a gun manufacturing company that hires an illicit jury-tampering consulting company (lead by Gene Hackman) to secure a verdict. But ambiguous jury member Nick Eastman (John Cusack) and his resourceful girlfriend Marlee (Rachel Weisz) have similarly effective methods of jury persuasion, and attempt to extort millions from prosecuting attorney Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman) and the duplicitous Rankin Fitch (Hackman) to swing the jury to the highest bidder’s side. Set in New Orleans, Runaway Jury is a satisfying legal thriller that digs beneath Hollywood’s characteristically shallow dramatic surfaces to modern social issues that resonate with compound pith. The triumph of Runaway Jury lies in its audacious treatment of a corporate interest jury trial as a crucible of contempt and capitalist greed. The underlying theme of the story is that juries, no matter how they’re

chosen, are subject to innumerable kinds of unseen manipulation from powers in and around the case at hand. It’s in this dicey realm of dishonesty that masters and their unwitting puppets dance to a tune with no basis in harmony or truth. Gene Hackman’s Rankin Fitch represents an archetype of ruthless Republican-tempered insolence whose only concern lies in the vast amount of money he can garner from manhandling a jury toward his client’s verdict. At the opposite end of the ethical spectrum is attorney Wendall Rohr (Dustin Hoffman). He’s a rarefied old school New Orleans lawyer of the people who knows that walking into a courtroom with yellow mustard spilled on his

tie will send a proper message that he’s more concerned with the consequence of justice than he is with his own personal problems. A restroom confrontation scene, late in the film, between Fitch and Rohr is a textbook example of a perfectly executed illumination of character and thematic mien. Hackman towers over Hoffman, insulting the tenacious attorney’s naïve perception of justice and the power of the rich to trample over whomever and whatever it pleases. It’s Fitch who wins the scene, but Rohr’s voice of virtue imposes a ringing message of eventual consequence that hits at Fitch’s cynical cruelty. Hackman and Hoffman are cut from the same generation of acting wood, and
both started their careers in the mid ‘60s in New York where they roomed together for a short while. The fire that these two standard bearers of American acting breathe into the scene is remarkable for the range of dramatic colors and rhythms conjured. At the heart of the story is the culpability of a gun manufacturing company that produced an automatic assault rifle used in a law office shooting that killed a young husband and father (played by Rusty Schwimmer). The case threatens to set a legal precedent that will cost gun companies billions of dollars, but the rival parties vying to sway the jury do so with entirely different motivations. Marlee and Nick are the underdog champions of the story because they act beyond the limits of ingrained capitalist thinking while seeming to adhere to its ritual negotiating tactics. Runaway Jury works because it breaks the audience’s expectation of character motivation by keeping hidden the nature of Nick and Marlee’s attempts at extorting money and or justice until the very end of the story. Director Gary Fleder (Kiss The Girls) does make one error of over sentimentalizing the film’s denouement in the way that he sets up the closing shots and with the amount of time that he allows the camera to linger on its childhood subjects. However, it’s a forgivable footnote to an otherwise thorough and thought provoking movie that transcends the mold of the courtroom drama with terrific ensemble performances. Rated PG-13 123 mins. MTW

Bring the Boys Home Saturday, 11 a.m. at the Maui Community College quadrangle in Kahului The biggest mistake peace activists ever made was allowing the pro-war Right Wing to say they “support our troops.” How in the world did sending our boys and girls in uniform off to a dangerous, illegal, war of aggression in the Middle East end up as “support?” At least Maui Peace Action gets it, which is why they’re part of a nationwide rally for our troops this weekend. Speakers will include vets and anti-war activists who care about our soldiers’ welfare and safety far more than any of the warmongers and chickenhawks who got us to invade and occupy Iraq in the first place. Scare Me, Please! check Film Showtimes, p. 21 I can’t believe it—a remake that doesn’t suck. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a “horror” movie that is actually scary. Well, okay, they couldn’t get away with NOT using some hot and sweaty, screaming teen babe from a popular television show as the main victim but she actually has a head attached (uh, most of the time?) to her bare-midriffed, tight tank-topped torso. It’s always cool when a horror movie is inspired by true events and the redneck characters in this film are definitely believable. Sure, the chainsaw wielding killer wearing the flesh masks of his victims is scary enough, but the real terror comes from creepy encounters with the supposed “normal” townsfolk. A good way to get in the mood for a little All Hallow’s Eve action, I think.

PUREVOLUME PANTERA “THE BEST OF PANTERA: FAR BEYOND THE GREAT SOUTHERN COWBOYS’ VULGAR HITS!” Pantera are the shit! You haven’t lived till you’ve launched off the stage during one of their insane live shows. These guys began hammering out some of the sickest heavy music ever heard in 1990, at a time when alternative and grunge were huge but the metal scene was a bit stagnant. This “Best Of” collection has material spanning the 13 years of mayhem wrought by the “Cowboys From Hell.” The only song that I can think of that’s missing is “Primal Concrete Sledge” but since it’s included on the bonus DVD along with 11 other sick videos and live footage, this package complete with bio/photo booklet is a bargain at twice the price! Who wins a Good Charlotte vs. Philip Anselmo (blindfolded with one arm tied behind his back) street fight? That’s easy, Phil would kick their ass every damn time!!! —Elektra/Rhino Records [SPIKE FUQUA]
PLACEBO “SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS” Quirky, eccentric and dark best describes Placebo’s murky blend of pop, punk and electronica. This is the fourth record from these UKbased musicians and I’ve really liked them since 1998’s Without You I’m Nothing (which featured David Bowie on a track), despite everyone around me telling me it’s crap. In fact, the only band higher on my boy Max’s “They Suck List” is Good Charlotte! So having been driven underground and forced to enjoy Placebo’s outré brand of music here in my car, I can’t help but wonder, do I really like Placebo, or do I just think I do? —Astralwerks Records [SPIKE FUQUA]
VARIOUS ARTISTS “ULTRA-LOUNGE, VOL. 5: WILD COOL & SWINGIN” The old saying "They sure don’t make em’ like they used to" is clichéd but entirely true when it comes to this music. I need this record, man—I mean, I’ve got cassette copies stashed around just in case something happens to the disc! I can’t help but sing along to every single one of these awesome songs. I have endless amounts of respect and admiration for these timeless entertainers, most of whom are no longer with us. If you’re not familiar with this stuff but like great singers, then turn off the damn "American Idol" and get with the program. This crazy collection of finger snappin’ lounge classics from the late ‘50s to early ‘60s includes some of the greatest music ever recorded. Bobby Darin’s "Sunday In New York", Peggy Lee’s smoldering version of "Fever" and the incomparable Louis Prima with Keely Smith (meow!) kickin’ out "That Old Black Magic" are just some of my favorites. I strongly suggest that you add this indispensable disc to your collection, grab some good-lookin’ dames, bust out the martinis and start swingin’ baby, yeah! —Capitol Records 1996 [SPIKE FUQUA]
THOMAS MAPFUMO AND THE BLACKS UNLIMITED “TOI TOI” Thomas Mapfumo is an icon of African music. Hailing from Zimbabwe, he was integral in helping his countrymen achieve independence in the 1970s. His protest actions landed him in jail, got him released and then saw him play with Bob Marley to celebrate Zimbabwe’s independence. Toi Toi, meaning protest, continues the upbeat, danceable, rebel music. Even though he sings in Shona, the melodies, harmonies, deep percussion and rich instrumentation create a trancelike effect on the listener. The high-pitched, ethereal quality of the mbira, a little finger piano, gives the music its distinctive flavor. Since his music is banned in Zimbabwe due to the present corruption of the government which took over from colonial Britain, he lives in exile in Eugene, OR and plays often in the U.S. Toi Toi is a perfect introduction to Zimbabwe’s profound, yet fun, happy music. —Chimurenga Music [JOE GATTO]
THE LATIN PROJECT “NUEVA MÚSICA” Latin music is more popular than ever and its disparate genres are expanding. Nueva Música gives an electronic flare to traditional salsa, merengue and samba rhythms. It is mostly instrumental, in Spanish and a little in Portuguese. This is definitely “new music” that will liven up any party, as it is “muy alegre” and the dance beats are universal to any listener. The DJs, Matt Cooper and Jez Colin, recruited top live performers from the world of Latin music, giving the album an organic feel. “Lei Lo Lei” starts the album off on a high note, incorporating salsa vocals and rhythms with slick club beats. “Sonhando” is deep and swinging with trippy percussion loops and crazy samples. “Universal” represents Brazil and the excellent electronic music coming from there. Listening to Nueva Música makes you feel like you are at some hip hotel bar on South Beach. —Electric Monkey Records [JOE GATTO] MTW

THE GRID
BY KOZMIC KEV
ARIES: This weekend’s new moon launches us into a world of mystery, sexuality and intrigue. You may need to let go of plans to help someone else. Your intuition is on. Be as patient with people that owe you money as you would like them to be with you. TAURUS: While everyone else is caught up in emotional frenzy you remain calm, cool and collective. You’re more attractive to others. People are jumping at the bit to make contracts with you or to get in a relationship with you. Keep your peace. GEMINI: Your season of love turns into a season of work. The new moon rules all forms of human services from restaurants to rest homes. Do things that will increase your health and strength. Eat less sugar and avoid flour products like bread and pastries. CANCER: Hard work and maturity are about to pay off. Your sense of timing is great; you’ll be at the right place at the right time. Creative processes, love affairs and raising kids are dealt with confidence and ease. The new moon gives you the power of play. LEO: It’s that time of year when the veil is thin and your connection to ancestors runs deep. Memories are helping you understand the past. Be more vulnerable and defenseless. The new moon highlights dreams, intuition and the qualities of your mother. VIRGO: Gather information and support for your next project. The new moon brings you in contact with neighbors, siblings and environmental activists. Poetry will flow from your lips with ease. Find the good and praise it. LIBRA: A new phase of existence begins for you. Values, material goods and food issues get bigger. Find a solution to over-consumption. The new moon has you focused on material gain and sustaining what you have. Keep on growing. SCORPIO: Break on through to the other side. Your latest death has broken you into new life. Render unto Caesar but give back to God. Find ways to show gratitude for your good fortune. The new moon in Scorpio revitalizes your cause and invokes the hero. SAGITTARIUS: Being a control freak is a good way not to enjoy this week. In other words, chill out and let go. Help someone that’s in a worse place than you. The new moon highlights dreams, intuition and deep psychology. It’s darkest before the dawn. CAPRICORN: Career pressures finally simmer down. It’s time to meet people and to attend social events. The new moon emphasizes parties, futuristic thinking and good friends. Breathe the air and welcome the rain. Carry an umbrella. AQUARIUS: Brace yourself, as you’re going to have to make some tough decisions this week. The vacation is just about over. The new moon emphasizes buckling down and paying attention to career details. Practice your skills and hone in on your talents. PISCES: Move out of the rain and into the sunshine. Exotic and unusual occurrences are likely to delight you. Learn to laugh at your own creations. The new moon emphasizes good luck, travel, foreign cultures, music and higher education. Go for it.

My favorite femme fatale, Jen, called me last Thursday in the late afternoon. “Come meet me, I’ll be nursing my Bushmill’s ‘til you get here,” she said. So I skipped out of work early to meet her at the Sly Mongoose in Lahaina, our haunt, our home, our curse… By the time I got there, Jen was in a sarong and sitting at a table with our friends, Vinnie and Jaxon, as they took a break from recording their new Zero Tolerance album. We immediately began reminiscing about the time the four of us took a quick but adventurous jaunt to Oahu—or, as Jen calls it, “YAA-HOO Oahu!” East Coast hardcore band Hatebreed was playing at the Pipeline Café in Oahu and we were all very excited to see a cool live show. Vinnie sailed his boat over with his dog, Mono, to meet us while Jen, Jaxon and I opted for the interisland flight. Once there, Jaxon, Jen and I luxuriously sipped our cocktails atop the Marriott in Waikiki while watching Vinnie’s boat sailing near shore. We tried not to gloat too much but it did take him something like 17 hours to get there. Poor guy. “I’ll have another Mai Tai, please,” I said, in my grief for Vinnie. Later Jen and I headed to the nearest bar, Angles, which happened to be filled with dancing men who were dressed way more fashionably than we were. One guy even grabbed my left tit and I let him. Yeah, it was a gay bar. But they had Bushmill’s and dancing men so we stayed. Jen and I compared dating histories and truly bonded there, amidst men who wanted nothing to do with us other than to be Jen’s dancing partner and to physically admire my cha-chas. Sigh. If only that were all it took… Later on, we all took so much time chillin’ and getting ready for the Hatebreed show that as we arrived, they were doing the whole “Thank you—Goodnight!” rock thing as they were basically playing the last song. We were so bummed we decided to hit the strip clubs as consolation. Our first stop was Femme Nous. There was a long line to get in, but since Jaxon’s “My Pussy Hurts” t-shirt cracked up the door guy, we breezed on by. The boys picked out this one dark-haired beauty named “Maile” and told Jen and I to sit closest to the stage. “Strippers like girls,” they said, smiling knowingly. Jaxon slapped down a whole lot of one-dollar bills in front of us and we went to work. Maile was gorgeous and very good at what she did. She had masses of bills pouring out of her G-string— she continuously had to tuck them under her mat so she could continue “dancing.” Jen just slid the dollars in Maile’s shoe. Maile started doing this crazy rotating leg thing while on her back naked with both her legs up in the air in front of us. “Wow! Do you do yoga?” Jen and I asked. We also noticed she had this intense purple bruise on her inner thigh. “Ugly, yeah?” she said. It was a bite mark. “Uh-uh! We want one!” we said, in awe and envy. Jen and I were having so much fun we almost forgot the guys were there, except that Jaxon was sponsoring us, as dollar bills quickly turned into fives and tens. Jen started giving Maile bills with her teeth and I passed them with my breasts. We kept asking if the guys were alright, if they wanted to sit next to the stage instead but they just said, “No, no—keep going!” After we left the strip bar, the adult toy store next door and some dance club nearby, we attempted to head back to where we were staying. With Jen behind the wheel, racing down an alleyway, we realized that those trees and storefronts we were passing and that cobblestone we were driving on was actually part of an outdoor mall in an industrial park. Yeah, Jen was driving on the sidewalk—there was no road. But she wasn’t drunk, just dangerous. MTW
